  • ‘I nearly rejected Kwasi Appiah’s call- Samuel Owusu opens up on first Black Stars call up

Ghana winger Samuel Owusu says he ‘nearly rejected’ former coach James Kwesi Appiah’s call because he normally does not pick calls from unknown numbers.

The Saudi based player revealed that he had a strange feeling when that particular call came in, so he hurriedly picked up and it was the national team coach.

Kwesi Appiah called to inform him of his maiden invitation, when he was then a player of Serbian side Cuckaricki.

“On thing about me, I don’t pick unknown calls. One day a number started calling. It was a Ghana number. Then something touched me to pick it. I finally did and the person was coach Kwasi Appiah inviting me to the national team. But I nearly rejected the call,” he said.

Owusu has since not looked back and was a member of the Black Stars team at the Nations Cup in Egypt last summer. He has eight caps for the senior national team.

The 24-year old made a mouthwatering move to Saudi Arabia to join Al Fayha after Africa Cup of Nations tornament.

  • Balotelli labelled ’embarrassing’ by Brescia owner Cellino

Brescia president Massimo Cellino has said he is “embarrassed” by forward Mario Balotelli, who he signed on a free transfer in the summer.

Balotelli, who grew up in Brescia, joined his hometown club when they returned to Serie A after an 11-year absence. However, the 29-year-old scored just five goals with Brescia rooted to the bottom of the table — 10 points from safety — when Serie A was stopped in March.

In December, Cellino was asked about Balotelli’s future and suggested the Italy international was free to leave at the end of the season.

“The lad embarrasses me,” Cellino told Italian station Radio Sportiva, when asked about Balotelli. “I’m hammered every day and I am pilloried.

“That I brought him home over-exposed him. You only mention Balotelli for what he does off the pitch not on it and that is embarrassing.”

Cellino courted controversy in November when he claimed the constant criticism of Balotelli was down to the fact he “was black.” The ex-Leeds owner later claimed it had been a joke.

Serie A was stopped with 12 matches to go for most teams, while some had 13 due to postponements caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Sources have told ESPN that the Italian FA will announce the cut off point for ending the season is Aug. 2, yet it remains unclear when the league will restart if it does at all with the presidents of Torino and Fiorentina having expressed their doubts.

And Cellino, who has led the calls for the season to be cancelled, defended his belief it would not be right for the 2019-20 campaign to reach a natural conclusion.

“It may seem that I only want the league to be cancelled because we are bottom and I don’t want to be relegated, but I don’t agree with league’s arrogant message,” he added. “It is unthinkable to go beyond June 30 with [contract] expires and budgets.

“The champions has been de facto annulled because it is falsified. We need to start thinking about next season. Talk of playing again is embarrassing.”

Before I could opened my mouth to utter a word I had already received a slap from him,” Gideon Ahenkorah said.

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, safety protocols have been prescribed by the World Health Organisation, WHO.

These protocols are believed to help break the chain of transmission.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday lifted the three weeks lockdown of Accra, Kasoa, Kumasi, and Tema but directed that all other protocols including wearing of a mask, hand washing and social distancing should be adhered to.

Markets and offices are also entreated to adhere to these protocols, some markets who flouted the directive have been closed down.

He also stated that they are putting in place measures to go by the social distancing protocols during their various flights.

Stock markets suffer worst quarter since 1987

Stock markets around the world suffered historic losses in the first three months of the year amid a massive sell-off tied to the coronavirus.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and London’s FTSE 100 saw their biggest quarterly drops since 1987, plunging 23% and 25% respectively.

The S&P 500 lost 20% during the quarter, its worst since 2008.

The drops come as authorities order a halt to most activity in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

Economists have warned the hit to the global economy is likely to be worse than the financial crisis, with forecasters for IHS Markit, for example, predicting growth will shrink 2.8% this year, compared to a 1.7% drop in 2009.

No country has been left untouched. The data firm expects China’s growth to sputter to 2%, while the UK could see growth drop 4.5%. The outlook for countries such as Italy and less developed economies is even worse.

“We remain very concerned about the negative outlook for global growth in 2020 and in particular about the strain a downturn would have on emerging markets and low income countries,” the president of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, said on Tuesday.

In the US, one central bank analysis suggested the unemployment rate could rise to more than 32% over the next three months, as more than 47 million people lose their jobs.

Globally, many indexes remain more than 20% lower than they were at the start of the year. A steep slide in oil prices, due to a drop in demand and a price war between producers, has compounded the problems on financial markets.

  • Esperance agree to deduct Kwame Bonsu transfer fee from Clottey fine to save Kotoko

Tunisian side Esperance have agreed to offset their debt to Asante Kotoko with the Emmanuel Clottey FIFA fine which comes as huge breather for the Ghana Premier League giants, GHANASoccernet.com can report.

The Blood and Gold were given a 60-day ultimatum to pay the US$ 150,000 dollars (435,000 Tunisian dinars) to the Porcupine Warriors as transfer fee for midfielder Kwame Bonsu who joined the club in June, 2019.

Kotoko are facing a 10 May, 2020 deadline to cough up US$ 240,000 ( 700,000 Tunisian dinars) for illegally registering Clottey, who was still contracted to Esperance.

Kamel Laarousi, a member of the Esperance legal team told Foot 24 that the defending African champions are close to finding a settlement with Kotoko through a clearing procedure (a legal financial process that means deduction of the minimum amount from the higher amount).

Laarousi said: ”Esperance is one of the biggest teams on the continent and doesn’t want to harm the Ghanaian club and incur a harsh penalty like contributing to their demotion in the second-tier just because we want to exercise our financial rights.”

  • COVID-19: Chinese couple arrested for allegedly producing fake PPEs in Ghana

The two, a man and his wife were picked up by a joint team from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Achimota Divisional Police Command based on a tip-off.

Head of Drug Market Surveillance Department at the FDA, Edward Prah Ashong, confirming the arrest on Thursday, explained that “it is true we have arrested some Chinese like that and investigations are ongoing.”

He added, “we had information that Chinese in Kisseman were packaging nose masks and hand sanitizers and were sending them to the market so we stormed there with the police around 3:30 pm yesterday [Wednesday].”

Mr. Prah Ashong also added that the production of the materials was done in large quantities.

“They do them on a large scale. We saw thermometers, hand sanitizers, and nose masks so we asked how they got those items and they said they run an NGO that donates items to communities, hospitals, organizations, among others. So we requested for their documents but they could not produce them readily, so we are waiting for these documents.”

“We also saw an almost 20-footer container parked with some PPEs and they said they were taking them to Burkina Faso but they are not locally made,” he explained.

“The nose masks were imported but as to whether it has been registered is the issue, and also how it got into the country is what we are investigating because some of the nose masks had expired.”

He noted that samples of the PPEs have been sent to the lab for testing because there are standards for the production of PPEs.

“If we establish any criminalities, we will let the police prosecute them because we picked the samples of the nose masks to the lab for testing and if it falls below the standard, we shall prosecute them,” he explained.

Mr. Ashong also added that three Ghanaian workers were spotted in the house during the operation.

“There were three Ghanaian workers; a driver, house help, and security but later, two Ghanaians also came and said they were the owners of the items in the truck.”

Mr. Ashong said the Chinese, who were in their 60s, told them they have been in Ghana for the past 20 years.

“The lady is called Wendy and they claim they have been here for 20 years. They also claim the property they are living in at Kisseman belongs to them because they acquired it three years ago.”

The two have since been granted bail pending further investigations.

  • Edwin Gyimah speaks against signing of pre-contracts in PSL

Ghana international Edwin Gyimah believes the signing of pre-contracts by players in the Premier Soccer League does nothing but distract clubs.

His Black Leopards teammate Lesedi Kapinga is believed to have signed a pre-contract with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Kaizer Chiefs’ George Maluleka is on his way to Sundowns and Grant Margeman became a Mamelodi Sundowns player this season but will join his new club next season.

Black Leopards star Gyimah is of the view this is not good for the league.

“When it comes to players who have signed pre-contracts it sometimes also affects a team depending on the situation the team is in,” he told KickOff.com

“Especially us in the relegation, in the bottom of the league, it really affects us because those players who have already signed pre-contracts were playing a key role in the team.

“It’s really, really painful because of where we are in this situation… because the kind of players that we’ve lost at this moment is a big blow for us.”

  • Freight forwarders angry at banks over long queues to pay duties at the port

Some freight forwarders in Tema are fuming with rage over the decision by banks who receive payment of duties at the Port of Tema to close some of their branches and also operate with limited staff.

Long queues characterised the Tema long room GCB bank and Ecobank which are the only banks accepting payment of duties with limited staff at the Port.

The queues made it difficult for the freight forwarders to observe the social distancing policy by the government which is a precautionary measure to the fight against COVID-19.

Checks by Eye on Port revealed that the GCB banks and Ecobank branches at the Golden Jubilee Terminal and Safebond Terminal were closed.

Another factor that is also contributing to the long queues is the fact that the Shipping Lines were refusing to accept cash payments in their various offices which hitherto was not so.

Speaking in an interview with the B&FT, some of the frustrated freight forwarders said they have been standing in the queue under the scorching sun for a very long time.

They also feared that the decision by the banks to open a few branches and operate with limited staff will impede the speed at which clearance of goods could be done.

Samuel Okine, a freight forwarder expressed worry that any delays in the clearance of their goods could lead to extra costs such as rents and demurrages.

  • Paying salaries of STC staff this month will be difficult – Nana Akomea

The Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC) Nana Akomea says there will be some difficulty in paying their staff after almost a month of being out of business.

This was down to the partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi which lasted for three weeks.

This saw no movement in and out of Accra and Kumasi thereby compelling the STC to halt its business for that period.

President Akufo-Addo last week lifted the lockdown and the STC have begun work again but Nana Akomea says they will struggle a bit to pay their staff because no revenue was generated during the lockdown period.

“During the lockdown, we were not operating at all, there is going to be some difficulty in paying salaries as a result of losing almost a month of operations”.

Nana Akomea also announced some measures the STC has put in place to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus now that they are back in business.

Aside practising social distancing by loading their buses to just 60% full, the STC also checks the temperature of all passengers boarding their buses.

“We test the temperature of every passenger and also check for the wearing of the face mask which is key”

He also said they are doing everything possible to ensure that all passengers follow safety measures which in the long run ensure the rate of infection does not shoot up.

As of April 19, Ghana had recorded 1,154 COVID-19 cases with 120 recoveries and 9 deaths.

  • U.S. coronavirus deaths top 49,000, averaging 2,000 lives lost a day: Reuters tally

U.S. coronavirus deaths topped 49,000 on Thursday as the number of lives lost in April rises by an average of 2,000 a day, according to a Reuters tally.

At that rate, U.S. deaths will reach 50,000 no later than Friday.

The total number of U.S. cases was approaching 860,000 with many states yet to report on Thursday.

U.S. cases rose by over 30,000 on Wednesday, the biggest increase in five days but in line with an average of 30,000 new cases a day in April, according to a Reuters tally.

Across the country, state officials say there remain bottlenecks in testing capacity, shortages of materials such as swabs used for taking samples and not enough workers to contact- trace infections.

In addition to a staggering death toll, unemployment claims soared on Thursday and reaffirmed the grim economic toll of the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 26.5 million Americans have sought unemployment benefits over the last five weeks, confirming that all the jobs gained during the longest employment boom in U.S. history have been wiped out as the novel coronavirus savages the economy.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey this month showed a bipartisan majority of Americans want to continue to shelter in place to protect themselves from the coronavirus, despite the impact to the economy.

  • Producer Inflation declines to 6.8 percent in March

Producer inflation for March 2020 has declined for the second consecutive month to 6.8 percent, from 11.8 percent recorded in February, 2020, according to data released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

This represents a 3.7 percentage point decrease in producer inflation relative to the rate recorded in February 2020.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the average change over time in the prices received by domestic producers for the production of their goods and services.

From the data, the decline emanated largely from the manufacturing sector, which constitutes more than two-thirds of the total industry, as well as the mining and quarrying sector.

The manufacturing sector decreased by 4.7 percentage points to record 2.1 percent, while the Mining and Quarrying sub-sector decreased by 2.4 percentage points from the February 2020 rate of 26.1 percent to record 23.7 percent in March 2020.

The utility sub-sector recorded an inflation rate of 12.1 percent for March 2020 indicating a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the February 2020 rate of 12.3 percent.

    Manufacturing

During March 2020, ten out of the sixteen major groups in the manufacturing sub-sector recorded inflation rates higher than the sector average of 2.1 percent. Manufacture of machinery and equipment recorded the highest inflation rate of 24.7 percent, while the Manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products and nuclear fuel recorded a deflation rate of -9.6 percent

The producer inflation rate in the petroleum subsector was 13.0 percent in March 2019. In April 2019, the rate increased to record 17.2 percent but declined to 1.2 percent in June 2019. However, it increased to 3.1 percent in August 2019 but declined again to -5.7 percent in October 2019. Thereafter the rate increased consistently to record 20.6 percent in January 2020, since then, the rate has declined consistently to record -9.6 percent in March 2020.

  • U.S.’s Mnuchin considers lending program for struggling oil companies

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he is considering a government lending program for U.S. oil companies looking for federal aid as they cope with a devastating plunge in prices, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

Oil prices have crashed as demand has shrunk due to lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic.

“One of the components we’re looking at is providing a lending facility for the industry. We’re looking at a lot of different options, and we have not made any conclusions,” Mnuchin told Bloomberg News in an interview bloom.bg/2xTUBFK.

U.S. crude oil futures collapsed to trade in negative territory for the first time in history on Monday, as desperate traders paid to get rid of barrels amid a dearth of storage space.

Last week, Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told Reuters he was working with Mnuchin to roughly double the size-limit on loans available to mid-tier U.S. energy companies under the recently passed CARES Act stimulus package to $200 million-$250 million.

Crashing oil prices have prompted shale companies to slash spending and halt drilling activity.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he asked his cabinet to devise a plan to inject cash into the ailing U.S. oil-drilling industry.

  • Bono Region lifts ban on tricycle business

The Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has lifted the ban on the use of tricycle (pragyia) by fare paying passengers, and cautioned riders to adhere to safety measures.

The RCC has also directed owners of the tricycles to stop minors from using the machines and ensure that riders picked two instead of three passengers at a time.

Barely a month ago, the RCC imposed a ban on the use of the tricycles as a means to stem the spread of the COVID-19 in the region.

Critics described the ban, which received serious public outcry as unnecessary as it created huge unemployment among the youth in the region.

But the Deputy Bono Regional Minister, Stevens Siaka said the RCC had directed the Regional Executives of the Motor Cycle Owners and Tricycle Riders Association to ensure riders acquired license.

He said the RCC intended to present quantities of nose masks to the Association to be distributed among the riders to protect themselves and passengers who used their machines.

Mr. Siaka who is the Member of Parliament for Jaman North said concerted and decisive efforts were required to successfully stem the spread of the virus and advised the public to comply with government directives on health and safety protocols.

  • Nestle first-quarter sales beat estimates as consumers hoard pet food, coffee

Nestle (NESN.S) reported a 4.3% rise in organic sales growth for the first quarter, the food giant said on Friday, as consumers filled cupboards with Purina pet food and Nescafe coffee to prepare for lockdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Nestle said it is launching a 500 million Swiss franc ($511.77 million) program to help the cafes and restaurants it supplies during the new coronavirus crisis, by extending payment terms and suspending rental fees for coffee machines.

The KitKat chocolate and Nescafe coffee maker also said it was keeping its outlook for the year, which targets continued improvement in organic sales growth – a measure which strips out currency and acquisition effects – and a higher underlying operating profit margin.

Analysts on average were expecting a 3.0% increase in first-quarter underlying sales growth, according to company-supplied estimates.

Total sales for the three months to the end of March fell 6.2% to 20.8 billion Swiss francs ($21.30 billion) mainly due to divestitures of its Skin Health and U.S. ice-cream business last year.

The Vevey, Switzerland- based company also said it was launching a strategic review of its struggling Yinlu peanut milk and canned rice porridge businesses in China. The businesses generated sales of 700 million Swiss francs last year.

Increased at-home consumption and stockpiling in North America in March because of government-imposed lockdowns lifted demand for Purina Pet care and Hot Pockets frozen food, Nestle said.

In Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMENA), more consumers reached for Maggi noodles and plant-based products from its Garden Gourmet brand. Both regions posted organic sales growth above 7%.

In contrast, underlying sales in Asia fell 4.6% as customers in China held off restaurant visits and shopping trips during much of the quarter.

Peer Unilever (ULVR.L) (UNA.AS) reported flat underlying sales growth in the first quarter and ditched its full-year sales targets on Thursday, as the coronavirus outbreak knocked consumption in its emerging markets.

  • Local textile companies can produce specific fabrics for face masks

The Textile Garment and Leather Employees Union (TGLEU) says local Ghanaian textile companies are capable of producing international standard fabrics purposely for nose mask.

The nose mask has become a hot commodity globally in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as health experts encourage its use to avoid contracting the virus.

In Ghana, many people are now going into the sewing of cloth masks due to the scarcity of the disposable ones and the quest to provide the public with some protection that could also suit their pockets.

Mr Abraham Koomson, General Secretary of the Union and the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the new trend, said the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA), Ministry of Health (MOH) and other relevant agencies must ensure that cloths used for such masks met some specifications.

Mr. Koomson said the local textiles companies must be given the necessary specifications for cloths or fabric that could be used for the masks to ensure the health safety of users.

According to him, the use of cloths manufactured for fashion purposes was not suitable for the production of nose masks as they may have some health implications due to the dyes and other chemicals used in producing such cloths.

“There are health implications because of the chemicals and dyes used. Even more dangerous if the fabrics originate from China. People have become fashionable with these masks and therefore are defeating the purpose of its use if specifications are not considered”.

He said to ensure the safety of the people, only cloths with specifications produced by local textiles companies should be approved for use for the production of nose masks.

Mr. Koomson also appealed to government to consider producing such masks in large quantities so as to be able to distribute freely to everyone or have certified agents to sell approved nose masks to the public.

  • Coronavirus: Trump suggests injecting disinfectant as treatment

US President Donald Trump has been lambasted by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body.

He also appeared to propose irradiating patients’ bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing.

Another of his officials had moments earlier said sunlight and disinfectant were known to kill the infection.

Mr Trump’s own public health agencies warn against bleach as a medicine.

    What did President Trump say?

During Thursday’s White House coronavirus task force briefing, an official presented the results of US government research that indicated coronavirus appeared to weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight and heat.

The study also showed bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minutes and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, outlined the findings at the news conference.

While noting the research should be treated with caution, Mr Trump suggested further research in that area.

“So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous – whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light,” the president said, turning to Dr Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response co-ordinator, “and I think you said that hasn’t been checked but you’re going to test it.

“And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that too. Sounds interesting,” the president continued.
“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?

“So it’d be interesting to check that.”

Pointing to his head, Mr Trump went on: “I’m not a doctor. But I’m, like, a person that has a good you-know-what.”

He turned again to Dr Birx and asked if she had ever heard of using “the heat and the light” to treat coronavirus.

“Not as a treatment,” Dr Birx said. “I mean, certainly, fever is a good thing, when you have a fever it helps your body respond. But I’ve not seen heat or light.”

“I think it’s a great thing to look at,” Mr Trump said.

A journalist at the briefing questioned whether Mr Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks could spread dangerous disinformation to Americans.

    What’s the reaction?

Doctors warned the president’s idea could have fatal results.

Pulmonologist Dr Vin Gupta told NBC News: “This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible and it’s dangerous.

“It’s a common method that people utilise when they want to kill themselves.”

Kashif Mahmood, a doctor in Charleston, West Virginia, tweeted: “As a physician, I can’t recommend injecting disinfectant into the lungs or using UV radiation inside the body to treat COVID-19.

“Don’t take medical advice from Trump.”

John Balmes, a pulmonologist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, warned that even breathing fumes from bleach could cause severe health problems.

He told Bloomberg News: “Inhaling chlorine bleach would be absolutely the worst thing for the lungs. The airway and lungs are not made to be exposed to even an aerosol of disinfectant.

“Not even a low dilution of bleach or isopropyl alcohol is safe. It’s a totally ridiculous concept.”

Mr Trump has previously hyped a malaria medication, hydroxycloroquine, as a possible treatment for coronavirus, though he has stopped touting that drug recently.

This week a study of coronavirus patients in a US government-run hospital for military veterans found more deaths among those treated with hydroxychloroquine than those treated with standard care.

Reacting to the president’s remarks on Thursday evening, Joe Biden, his likely Democratic challenger in November’s White House election, tweeted: “UV light? Injecting disinfectant? Here’s an idea, Mr President: more tests. Now. And protective equipment for actual medical professionals.”

    What’s the US government’s advice?

Only this week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to be careful with cleaning products as sales of household disinfectants soar amid the pandemic.

“Calls to poison centres increased sharply at the beginning of March 2020 for exposures to both cleaners and disinfectants,” found the agency’s weekly morbidity and mortality report.

The US Food and Drug Administration has warned against ingesting disinfectants, citing the sale of bogus miracle cures that contain bleach and purport to treat everything from autism to Aids and hepatitis.

The agency’s website says: “The FDA has received reports of consumers who have suffered from severe vomiting, severe diarrhoea, life-threatening low blood pressure caused by dehydration, and acute liver failure after drinking these products.”

  • G20 calls for more donations

The presidency of the G20, currently held by Saudi Arabia, has called for more donations to fund an emergency response to the pandemic.

The G20 secretariat said that so far $1.9bn (£1.5bn) had been donated, but that the target set was $8bn. Donations are coming from countries and the private sector.

G20 Labour and employment ministers pledged on Thursday to prop up the labour market as the coronavirus pandemic hits jobs and output around the world.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) earlier this week warned that the economic consequences of the virus crisis were having a “devastating effect” on workers and employers.

“The world of work is facing the worst global crisis since World War Two,” Alette van Leur, ILO policies director, warned.

  • Spotify allows fans to pay musicians directly

Spotify has introduced a new feature allowing artists to receive “tips” or donate money to charity.

Bands can pin an “Artist Fundraising Pick” badge to the top of their Spotify profile, highlighting a fundraising destination where fans can send cash.

As well as fundraising for themselves, artists can give money to charity or to road crews who are out of work while tours are on hold due to Covid-19.

Spotify said it hoped the feature would help artists affected by the lockdown.

“First and foremost, this feature enables artists who are interested in raising money to support themselves, their bands, or their crews, to get the word out to their fans on their Spotify artist profiles,” it said in a blog post announcing the initiative.

“Given the urgency and impact of the Covid-19 crisis, we’re working as quickly as we can to develop this new product and get it out to as many artists as possible. However, we’ve never built a fundraising feature like this before.”

“We consider this a first version that will evolve as we learn how to make it as helpful as possible for the music community.”

Dance act Marshmello was one of the first to sign up, encouraging his 33m monthly listeners to donate to the Musicares coronavirus relief fund, set up by the Grammys to support out-of-work musicians.

“So many of us have been affected by the Covid-19 virus, and now more than ever we need to stand together and help each other,” he said.

Singer-songwriter Taylor Vick, who releases music under the moniker Boy Scouts, is using the feature to try to remain solvent.

“Like so many others right now, I am out of work as our tours have been cancelled or postponed because of Covid-19,” she said. “Any help is appreciated as we keep in our efforts to find new ways to get by.”

Online “tipping” has become commonplace on streaming sites like Twitch and the podcast app Himalaya.

In China, the feature is baked into streaming services like QQ Music, Kugou and Kuwo and the karaoke app WeSing – which are all run by tech conglomerate Tencent.

Writers can also be tipped for their stories through WeChat and podcasters for their episodes on Himalaya, China’s biggest spoken-word audio platform.

Artists broadly welcomed Spotify’s foray into the world of tipping, but some suggested the site could make a bigger impact by increasing the royalties it paid musicians.

Last month, a petition was set up by Evan Greer asking Spotify to triple its royalty payments following the loss of earnings that has arisen through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Swedish company has not responded to those demands; but has separately pledged up to $10 million in donations to organizations supporting artists in need, including MusiCares and the UK charities Help Musicians and the PRS Foundation.

  • Merkel warns coronavirus crisis ‘still just the beginning’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said her country must remain “clever and cautious” in handling the coronavirus crisis, as it is “not the end phase but still just the beginning”.

“We’ll have to live with this virus for a long time,” Ms Merkel told parliament ahead of an EU summit, via videolink.

She said Germany should be ready to “make very different, meaning much higher contributions to the EU budget”.

The video summit – the EU’s fourth on coronavirus – is now under way.

EU leaders are expected to sign off on a new €540bn (£470bn; $575bn) emergency fund to protect European workers, businesses and countries worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The details are yet to be worked out.

The €540bn would be released through EU institutions that already exist, including the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the main bailout fund set up in response to the 2008 financial crisis.

European Council President Charles Michel told leaders they should aim to start releasing the funds by 1 June.

But a thornier issue is how much extra to commit to the EU budget to deal with this crisis, and how much the 27 member states will spend jointly. There are plans for a special recovery fund, like the post-1945 Marshall Plan.

Italy and some other states want EU help in aid grants, not loans. The scale of the crisis is such, they argue, that at least €1.5 trillion will be needed.

Mrs. Merkel said extra EU budget funds should be provided “in a spirit of solidarity” and for a limited time.

Italy, at the epicenter of the pandemic in Europe, has been especially vocal in urging its EU partners to jointly guarantee debt.

But Germany, the Netherlands and Austria oppose any mutualization of debt, in the form of so-called “coronabonds”. Under current EU rules countries cannot be made liable for each other’s debts.

  • Coronavirus: First patients injected in UK vaccine trial

The first human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford.

Two volunteers were injected, the first of more than 800 people recruited for the study.

Half will receive the Covid-19 vaccine, and half a control vaccine which protects against meningitis but not coronavirus.

The design of the trial means volunteers will not know which vaccine they are getting, though doctors will.

Elisa Granato, one of the two who received the jab, told the BBC: “I’m a scientist, so I wanted to try to support the scientific process wherever I can.”

The vaccine was developed in under three months by a team at Oxford University. Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the Jenner Institute, led the pre-clinical research.

“Personally I have a high degree of confidence in this vaccine,” she said.

“Of course, we have to test it and get data from humans. We have to demonstrate it actually works and stops people getting infected with coronavirus before using the vaccine in the wider population.”

Prof Gilbert previously said she was “80% confident” the vaccine would work, but now prefers not to put a figure on it, saying simply she is “very optimistic” about its chances.

So how does the vaccine work?

The vaccine is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) from chimpanzees that has been modified so it cannot grow in humans.

The Oxford team has already developed a vaccine against Mers, another type of coronavirus, using the same approach – and that had promising results in clinical trials.

How will they know if it works?

The only way the team will know if the COVID-19 vaccine works is by comparing the number of people who get infected with coronavirus in the months ahead from the two arms of the trial.

That could be a problem if cases fall rapidly in the UK, because there may not be enough data.

Prof Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, who is leading the trial, said: “We’re chasing the end of this current epidemic wave. If we don’t catch that, we won’t be able to tell whether the vaccine works in the next few months. But we do expect that there will be more cases in the future because this virus hasn’t gone away.”

The vaccine researchers are prioritizing the recruitment of local healthcare workers into the trial as they are more likely than others to be exposed to the virus.

A larger trial, of about 5,000 volunteers, will start in the coming months and will have no age limit.

  • Parts of Takoradi flooded following a downpour

Parts of the Central Business District (CBD) of Takoradi got flooded following a downpour.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, which lasted for an hour, inundated stores, homes and offices, causing considerable destruction to property but there was no fatality.

The road leading to the Takoradi Airport was completely submerged, leaving many people using that road, stranded.

Many of the flood victims cited choked gutters and what they said was the poor drainage system of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, as the main causes.

Mr. Smart Mensah, owner of the Western Hydraulics Shop, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, it took him and his team hours to drain the flood waters outside his shop.

A second-hand goods dealer on the Busumakura Street, who gave her name only as Auntie Konadu, said her shop was covered with water up to the height of about two metres.

She was yet to assess the cost of damage – property lost.

The deluge brings to the fore the urgent need for the city authorities together with the residents to tackle head-on, the unhealthy practice of dumping waste in gutters and open drains, as the rains set in.

  • Akufo-Addo’s ‘herd immunity strategy’ against pandemic dangerous – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has sought to question the logic in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s lifting of the partial lockdown in the Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi, Kasoa and its environs.

President Akufo-Addo, in his 7th address to the nation on the COVID-19 pandemic, told Ghanaians that upon the indepth knowledge that his administration and Health Professionals have acquired about the behaviour and mutations of the virus as well as adequate data on the epidemic, it was prudent to lift the lockdown but however cautioned Ghanaians to adhere to all safety protocols to guard against the spread of the COVID-19.

The President explained that “so far it has been established that the virus was imported into our midst from foreign shores, and is being spread through person to person contact. The majority of persons infected in Ghana have mild to no symptoms at all, whilst a very small number have required hospital treatment, out of which nine (9) persons, with underlying ailments, have died”.

“…we are introducing rapid results testing to augment our surveillance and enhanced contact tracing efforts, so that we can quickly isolate and treat confirmed cases. From the sixty-eight thousand, five hundred and ninety-one (68,591) samples tested, we have been able to understand better the dynamism of the virus, map out its geographic footprint, and establish current and potential hotspots. We have also been able to isolate and educate asymptomatic carriers, and, thereby, help minimise the spread of the virus…lifting these restrictions does not mean we are letting our guard down. All other measures are still firmly in place”, the President expounded.

But according to Ex-President John Mahama, President Akufo-Addo seems to have jumped the gun in adopting a strategy called ”herd immunity” to fight the pandemic.

Herd immunity is the idea that if the coronavirus keeps spreading, more people will be infected and eventually somehow the infected persons will become immune leading to the end of the pandemic as the virus finds it difficult to find a susceptible host.

This strategy was suggested by Chief Science Adviser to the UK government, Patrick Vallance who believed the UK needed to “build up some kind of herd immunity so more people are immune to this disease and we reduce the transmission”, and as a result the pandemic will fizzle out on its own.

Addressing the nation via a digital conversation on Thursday, April 23, 2020, Ex-President Mahama opined that the President might be putting many lives at risk by his decision-making.

”One gets the sense that perhaps because of the current low mortality and the cases we have confirmed, the President might be seeking to rely on what is called herd immunity as a strategy to fight COVID-19 but I dare say this is dangerous. We must remember that there are reports of re-infection occuring in some cases elsewhere and also prolonged immunity to the virus has not yet been proven at this stage”, he stressed.

He called for better interventions to be made by the Akufo-Addo administration in fighting the pandemic because ”the burden of the coronavirus disease could potentially be very heavy. COVID-19 has overwhelmed the health systems of most advanced countries and can do the same in Ghana. The toll on our healthcare workers could be devastating. You can buy ventilators and other medical items on the market but you cannot go to the market and buy skilled doctors and nurses, and other medical staff”.

  • Residents in Western Region express fear over lockdown removal

Residents in the Western Region have expressed fear over the recent announcement made by President Nana Akufo-Addo lifting the partial lockdown that was imposed on Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi due to the number of COVID-19 cases recorded there.

The residents, especially those in the three entry districts of Shama, Sekondi-Takoradi Metro and the Effia-Kwesimintim Municipality stressed the need to ensure that no one smuggles’ COVID-19 into the region to add to the already one recorded case.

They noted that during the partial lockdown of some areas in the country, many people were not able to travel from the affected areas to their villages and now that it has been lifted, people with the disease might travel to the region with it.

The residents gave their grievances in an interview with the Ghana News Agency when it took to town to ascertain whether people were observing the preventive protocols and what they could do to prevent infection should there be a case in the Metropolis.

According to them, the region has recorded its first case and was making contact tracing and coupled with the highly populated nature of the region, there was the need for swift and intensive action in its preparedness to tackle the movement or influx of people in the region.

They lamented that should there be more importation of the disease in the region the implications for its health system, economy and issues of women and children would be dire and urged the authorities to intensify monitoring in the districts and implement stringent measures to mitigate the threat in the region.

Mr. Kwaw Someakwah, a trader at the Takoradi Market Circle argued that contrary to a directive by the city authority directing all traders to maintain social distancing to avoid a possible spread, they have utterly “thrown it to the dogs”.

  • There’s no connection between coronavirus and 5G – ICT Professionals Ghana

The Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH), on Thursday, said the new mobile telephony technology called 5G has no connection with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as being speculated.

The Association, in a statement signed by Mr David Gowu, the Executive Director and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said 5G does not spread COVID-19.

The Association, therefore, urged the public to disregard the conspiracy theories linking the new technology to the deadly pandemic.

The statement explained that 5G was a technology to provide an extra-large pipe of the internet to connect mobile phones and other devices with 10 times the current speed and data volume being provided by 4G.

It said 5G was a technology designed to carry voice and big data using non-ionizing electromagnetic wave as a means of transport over the air interface to devices.

?These devices are mainly electronic devices and not human beings,? it said.

Non-ionizing electromagnetic wave in this context is the range of frequencies (3KHz – 300GHz) on the electromagnetic spectrum that cannot cause harm to the human tissue/cell/DNA when exposed to the radiation, it said.

    FM Radio Frequencies (87MHz – 108MHz), Television Frequencies (700MHz), Mobile network frequencies such as 1G (150MHz – 900MHz), 2G (900MHz – 1.8GHz), 3G (1.6GHz – 2.0GHz), 4G (2GHz – 8GHz) and 5G (2GHz – 300GHz) are examples, the statement said.
It explained that COVID-19, on the other hand, was a zoonotic disease caused by a pathogen that jumped from non-human animals (usually vertebrates) to humans and then spread from human to human.

It said Pangolin-like animal was suspected to have transmitted this string of the virus called the novel coronavirus.

The statement said the novel coronavirus was biological and could be transferred from one person to the other through the mouth, nose and eyes when one came into contact with an infected person.

The infected patient, who may be asymptomatic or symptomatic, can transfer the virus to another person when droplets of fluids containing the virus are spread through coughing, sneezing or spitting into the air or surfaces.

  • NHIA provides clarification on its GHC250,000 donation to Relief Fund

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says its donation of GHC250,000, to the COVID-19 Relief Fund is consistent with the goal of facilitating access to health care services.

It made reference to the National Health Insurance ACT, 2012 (ACT 852), Section 40, which details the object of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) – to facilitate the provision of or access to health care services and to invest in any other facilitating programme to promote access to health service.

This was contained in a press statement, issued by the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the Authority, to provide clarification and remove any confusion over why it should make a contribution to the Fund.

The NHIS, it explained, was set up as a solidarity system to make public healthcare affordable, adding that, public healthcare support included payments for vaccines, immunization, and malaria prevention amongst others.

“In light of this, it was deemed appropriate to support Covid-19 efforts by the government. This does not, in any way, relegate the payment of claims to the background.”

The statement said the amount donated to the Fund, though significant, represented less than five per cent of the entire Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Budget for 2020.

“Indeed, it is equivalent to 0.06% of funds paid in claims this year, which amounts to approximately GHC400 million to healthcare providers as claims re-imbursement.

“The ability to control the Covid-19 pandemic within the country would eventually protect the NHIF in terms of reduced claims from service providers.

“In advanced countries where Universal Health Coverage is achieved, the equivalent of the National Health Service (NHS) as pertains for the UK or PhilHealth for the Philippines will cover all expenses for Covid-19 related treatments albeit with additional emergency funding from government.”

The statement added that the donation was the “NHIS way of demonstrating good corporate citizenship by supporting government initiatives that will provide health education, prevention and enhancement of health infrastructure to fight this unseen enemy”.

It gave assurance to the public and service providers that membership and claims payment remained its core function.

  • Explain coronavirus data discrepancies Mahama to government

John Mahama has asked the government to ensure that the process of acquiring data on the COVID-19 outbreak is transparent in order to build trust.

In a Facebook presentation on Thursday, April 23, he said: “Issues have been raised about the discrepancies in data on COVID-19 put out by the government. Some of these discussions have been led by the renowned Ghanaian pathologist and former Director of the Ghana Health Service Prof Agyeman Badu Akosa.

“I urge the government to explain the sources and nature of the data and the discrepancies in the data because we need to build trust, transparency, and confidence in the process in the fight against the virus.”

He also called on Ghanaians to demand transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the COVID-19 trust fund created by the government to help finance activities relating to the fight against the pandemic.

Mr Mahama said the funds were contributed by the tax payer, hence due accountability must be rendered by the government.

In a Facebook live presentation on Thursday April 23, Mr Mahama also urged the government to disburse the funds immediately to the health institutions to enable them discharge their duties.

He said : “If you have nothing urgent to do outside please continue to stay at home avoid shaking hands or joining large gatherings.

“Let us regularly wash our hands with soap under running water, resort to the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers when possible.”

He added: “Let us all join hands in demanding accountability and transparency from the government in the management of the COVID-19 funds, after all these are public funds contributed by tax payers.

“I am passionately appealing to the government to ensure a timely release of these funds to the institutions, health and non-heath, so that they can discharge their duties appropriately and according to plan.”

  • Protect each other from contracting COVID-19 – Catholic Bishop advises Ghanaians

The Most Reverend Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani Diocese on Thursday advised Ghanaians to be responsible and protect each other from contracting the COVID-19.

He said Ghanaians could do this when they embrace and use nose masks and adhere to other health and safety protocols such as social distancing, avoid of handshake, washing of hands with soap under running water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers at all times.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a visit by the Deputy Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Stevens Siaka to the Catholic Secretariat at Abesim, near Sunyani, Most Rev. Gyamfi said every Ghanaian had the responsibility to protect each other.

Bishop Gyamfi said though the government had lifted the partial lockdown in parts of Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, COVID-19 was still a pandemic the nation was fighting to contain.

Most Rev. Gyamfi said it would be easy for the government to win the fight if Ghanaians strictly adhered to the directives given and heed to the advice of health officials.

He said the Diocese had directed all Catholic Priests to intensify public education on radio stations for members of the Church and Ghanaians in general on the need to wear nose masks and adhere to safety measures.

Mr. Siaka visited the Pax Garments, a local manufacturing company of the Diocese at the Secretariat and commended the Catholic Church for its support towards the development of the nation.

As partners in development, the Deputy Regional Minister who is the Member of Parliament for Jaman North said the government expected more from churches in addressing youth unemployment aside their spiritual responsibilities.

Mr. Siaka was impressed with the work of the Company, which had permanently engaged 56 young men and women and could produce 1,000 nose masks on daily basis.

  • Wear recommended three-layered face masks FDA warns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Thursday said most of the locally produced facemasks rather posed health risks to citizens rather than helping to protect them from the COVID-19.

It said most of those locally produced facemask were either single or double layered cloth and sewn with treated materials, which in itself may pose danger to the user.

The FDA, therefore, appealed to the public to desist from using un-recommended face masks, stressing that in an attempt to contain the spread of the disease, many were producing it locally, the efficacy of which could not be ascertained.

Mr Joseph Yaw-Bernie Bernnie, FDA Head of Medical Devices Department, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the recommended face masks generally must be able to filter out particles and still be easy to breathe through.

He said in the absence of propylene, which is the common material used for medical-grade face masks, 100 per cent cotton or cotton blends possessed good material characteristics for homemade face masks.

He said recent studies and evaluations undertaken by the FDA on viable materials for the production of effective homemade face masks from local fabrics or materials established that Calico-Stiff (Hard/Medium)-Calico (three layers) combination is ideal for a reusable homemade COVID-19 face mask.

He said Calico-Calico-Calico (three layers) combination is ideal for a reusable homemade COVID-19 face mask and that it was important for both local producers and users to ensure the recommended material were used.

Mr Bernnie said there must be no chemicals in the materials used for the production of the masks, noting that because some of those face masks contained chemicals or were dyed, the Authority could not readily ascertain the health implication, hence the advice to avoid it.

A walk through the Madina Station and Market, many people were seen using the locally produced face mask, most of which are either single or double-layered or were made with the treated materials.

But Mr Bernnie said the FDA was carrying out market surveillance to rescue the system, educating both producers and users to respectively stop producing and using the un-recommended face masks.

He said so far a total of eight companies had been licensed to produce the recommended three-layered face mask for the country.

He said most applications for the licensing of the face masks had failed the test but expressed the hope that more would be licensed by the close of the week to make them available.

Mr Bernnie said anyone who desired to use a treated material or branded face mask could do so but must ensure that the part containing the chemical or brand should be the outer layer to prevent direct contact with the chemical.

He said the face mask is for protecting the wearer from others or vice versa but wearing the un-recommended one would end up not achieving that aim.

That would rather expose the wearer to danger because of the false sense of security and end up picking even other infections, he said.
