  • Bono Region lifts ban on tricycle business

The Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has lifted the ban on the use of tricycle (pragyia) by fare-paying passengers and cautioned riders to adhere to safety measures.

The RCC has also directed owners of the tricycles to stop minors from using the machines and ensure that riders picked two instead of three passengers at a time.

Barely a month ago, the RCC imposed a ban on the use of the tricycles a means to stem the spread of the COVID-19 in the region.

Critics described the ban, which received serious public outcry as unnecessary as it created huge unemployment among the youth in the region.

But, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Thursday, Mr. Stevens Siaka, the Deputy Bono Regional Minister said the RCC had directed the Regional Executives of the Motor Cycle Owners and Tricycle Riders Association to ensure riders acquired license.

He said the RCC intended to present quantities of nose masks to the Association to be distributed among the riders to protect themselves and passengers who used their machines.

Mr. Siaka who is the Member of Parliament for Jaman North said concerted and decisive efforts were required to successfully stem the spread of the virus and advised the public to comply with government directives on health and safety protocols.

  • We trust our results and still stand by it – FDA to COA Herbal

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has hit back at COA Herbal after the latter challenged their test results conducted on COA FS food supplement which showed the product was contaminated.

The FDA conducted a test on samples of COA FS Food Supplement and the laboratory analysis of the product showed excessive microbial, mold and yeast contamination.

They also found out that the product was contaminated with E.Coli which must not be present in a medicinal product.

They then ordered the Cape Coast-based company to recall the product with specific batch numbers.

Manufacturers of the product, Centre of Awareness Global Peace Mission, have however challenged the claims by the FDA that COA FS is unwholesome for public consumption.

They say their own private test at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital proved that the drug was not contaminated.

Their CEO Prof Samuel Ato Duncan, said they are sensing a grand scheme to bring the company down.

However Head of laboratories at the FDA, Eric Kakari Boateng on Citi FM says the FDA did a diligent job and they still stand by their results.

“If they have done (their own tests), that is their piece of cake I guess. We trust the result that we realised. We always stand by it. This is not the first time we have been challenged. This is like the fifth time. Even multinationals have challenged us and we have not lost a single one because before we come out with the results, we cross-check so we are extremely sure of what we are doing before it comes out. Telling someone to do recall is not an easy thing so we will not just come and tell you to do a recall when there is no cause for concern. But our recall stills holds.”

He, therefore, urged COA Herbal to submit their said report to the FDA for the necessary next line of action to be determined.

“There are standard ways of resolving challenges. They have a right to challenge so they should submit the report, attach a letter and bring it to the FDA and then we will take it from there. We say there is contamination, they say there is no contamination but it is what the law says. So they should get their report and send it through the right channel,” he added.

Even though COA Herbal has acted on the FDA directive and recalled their product from the market, they have also vowed to challenge the test.

  • Another 4.4 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week

For the fifth week in a row, millions of American workers applied for unemployment benefits, seeking financial relief as businesses remained closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

First-time claims for unemployment benefits totaled 4.4 million in the week ending April 18, after factoring in seasonal adjustments, the US Department of Labor said.
Without those adjustments — which economists use to account for seasonal hiring fluctuations — the raw number was 4.3 million.

No matter how you look at the data, the last five weeks have marked the most sudden surge in jobless claims since the Department of Labor started tracking the data in 1967. American workers filed 26.5 million initial claims since March 14, according to the seasonally adjusted numbers.

Not all of those claims will result in benefits being paid. Some will be rejected because workers did not meet eligibility requirements. Even so, numbers at that level reflect a devastating blow to workers, indicating roughly 16.2% of the US labor force is suffering from layoffs, furloughs or reduced hours during the coronavirus pandemic.

Weekly claims numbers have come down over the past three weeks, falling from a peak of 6.9 million in the last week in March. Even so, claims continue in the millions every week — a stark contrast to the pre-pandemic strength in the job market. Just a couple months ago, weekly claims were hovering in the low 200,000s. That puts recent weekly claims north of 20 times the pre-coronavirus level, and more than five-times of the worst five-week stretch during the 2007-2009 financial crisis, according to Heidi Shierholz, senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute.

And even though the declines from week to week are somewhat encouraging, the data shows that much of the damage is already done, said Paul Ashworth, chief US economist at Capital Economics. Case in point, the seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate sat at 11% in the week ending April 11 — the highest level recorded in the series, according to the DOL.

Continued jobless claims, representing workers who filed for their second week of benefits or more, stood at nearly 16 million in the week ended April 11, after seasonal adjustments, up from 11.9 million in the prior week.

Early studies have shown lower-income workers are particularly affected by job losses, and minorities, specifically black and Hispanic families, are expected to bear the brunt of the economic cost of this crisis.

Meanwhile, states continue to struggle to process the overwhelming volume of unemployment claims.

In Hawaii, where much of the economy is tourism-based, roughly 26% of the March labor force has filed for first-time benefits over the past five weeks. In Kentucky and Michigan, some 24% of workers have filed for initial claims.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters Tuesday that his state had 1,000 people “just to take the incoming unemployment calls. That’s how high the volume is. And they still can’t keep up.”

And Florida’s state unemployment agency said on Tuesday that it had only paid a paltry 14% of the claims filed since March 15 — among the slowest in the country, according to an Associated Press analysis.

Just over a quarter of Florida’s claims were rejected because filers were found ineligible for the regular jobless benefits program. However, some may still qualify under a new pandemic unemployment assistance program that Congress created in the $2 trillion relief package last month.

Lawmakers temporarily extended the unemployment program to independent contractors, the self-employed, gig workers and those affected by the coronavirus — and states have scrambled to update their computer systems to process those new types of claims.

  • It will be an insult for GFA to appoint a foreigner as Technical Director – Polo

The technical directorate position is now unoccupied after Oti Akenteng’s long term service came to and last month.

Speaking to Richmond K Entsie on Tru FM, Mohammed Polo claimed that Ghanaians are matured to do the work.

According to Mohammed Polo “we don’t need to appoint any foreigner for the job due to the maturity of our football”.

“We have old footballers who can do the work. For white man to come in to this is an insult to our integrity.”

“Don’t we have sense? What has the white men done for us? They can’t do anything because we have our own destiny that is why we gained independent.

“This is the time to look for the right person to help our football because the Technical Director is there for our football policies especially the development of our football.

“We have the qualities in the system but we are not developing it. The football is like our food and it differ from the foreigners. It’s unnecessary to appoint foreigner. We have to think far.” He said.

  • You cant force players to accept pay cuts Asante Kotoko CEO

Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko SC, George Amoako has stated that the club will only agree to slash salaries if the playing body and the technical team members consent to it.

The Coronavirus pandemic has halted the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League and all other sporting activities in the world.

This has forced clubs in Europe to initiate a salary cut policy to reduce their financial burden in a period where everything has come to a standstill.

Though some Ghana Premier League clubs including Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak want to replicate this in the local scene because they have lost their main source of revenue (gate proceeds), the Kotoko CEO believes they can only do that when the actors involved accept to cut their salaries.

In an interview with Kumasi based Nhyira FM, he said the contract they have with individual actors makes it impossible for the club to force any policy on the players if they are not willing to do it.

“Pay cut is under review and nobody can force it on the neck of the playing body. Players have a contract with the club and all over the world a pay cut is based on negotiations and agreement.”

“You cannot have it one day that everybody will agree that you should cut down their salaries because it is a very difficult thing to do. We will negotiate and come to a consensus with the players but if they refuse to cut down their salaries there is nothing that we(management) can do about it,“ he added.

  • Coronavirus donations not by force – Emmanuel Adebayor to critics

Former Premier League striker Emmanuel Adebayor has hit back at those who have called him out for not donating money to his home country of Togo amid the global coronavirus crisis, stating that he will not be parting with his money purely because others wish him to do so.

Football has ground to a halt across the planet in the wake of Covid-19’s rapid spread, with most countries in some state of lockdown as authorities attempt to get the virus under control and treat those who have been infected.

With players having so much time on their hands due to a lack of matches and training while social distancing protocols are in place, many footballers have spent their time helping to raise funds or awareness for charities that directly benefit those on the front line of the fight.

Samuel Eto’o has donated relief packages to his home nation of Cameroon, with items such as food, soaps, sanitisers and protective equipment handed out in the country’s economic capital of Douala.

Didier Drogba, another African icon, joined Eto’o in roundly lambasting French professors for suggesting their continent should be used as a testing ground for a vaccine due to developing nations having little protection to begin with.

The former Ivory Coast international also donated the soon-to-be-completed Laurent Pokou hospital, built by his Drogba Foundation, to his home nation’s government as a facility to screen for the disease.

Such charitable moves prompted some to ask Adebayor what he would be doing with the wealth he has accumulated across his long career, but the former Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham striker says that he is his own man and won’t be swayed by the actions or opinions of others.

“I always do things according to the wishes of my heart and not according to the words of others,” Adebayor said in a Facebook live video.

“I’m sorry that people compare me to Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba by asking me why I don’t have a foundation or why I don’t donate, as if I was the one who brought the coronavirus to Togo…

“I am neither the one nor the other, I am me, Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor. A word of advice for the guys regarding donations, I will not do that. Everything is clear and very simple. Thank you and good day.”

  • Export 70% of your products to qualify for Free Zones GFZA CEO

In order for companies to qualify to be part of the free zones enclave, they must export not less than 70 per cent of their products or services, Mr Michael Okyere Baafi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), has said.

He said this is a statutory requirement that the companies must meet to stand a chance of qualifying to share in the enclave.

Mr Baafi who is also an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the New Juaben South constituency for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) explained that the free zones was established by government purposely to earn foreign exchange to strengthen the local currency.

To that end, he said their focus is mainly on export.

He told Accra based C TV in an interview on Thursday April23 that : “By law every free zones company is supposed to export not less than 70 per cent of what you produce whether goods or service. This is what a company must do before it can be in the free zones.

“The government brought about free zones to ensure more export for foreign exchange to cushion our currency.

“So the free zones proramme is not meant for every company unless the company is ready to export 70 per cent of its products.”

Touching on his plans for his constituency of he becomes the parliamentary candidate and eventually the Member of Parliament, he said he has said that he has good plans for the constituency especially the regional capital.

He noted on the that at the moment, the constituency, especially the Eastern regional capital Koforidua has a lot of challenges which have remained unresolved hence when voted for to become the PC and eventually an MP, he will lobby for developments to the area.

He further noted that although the government is trying hard to provide jobs for all unemployed youth, there still remains some who are jobless.

He said he will ensure that these people are employed.

“I will change the face of Koforidua politics,” he said.

He added : there are some challenges in the constituency. Koforidua for example has some bad roads thatI will ensure they are fixed when voted for.

“The youth who are unemployed as well as our party executives in the constituency will not be abounded.”

  • Decision to lift lockdown honest – Koku Anyidoho

Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that the decision to lift the lockdown was an honest one since it brought untold hardship in some homes.

He recounted how he had to give GH¢10 to two minors, who were four and 10 years old, he came into contact with when they approached him selling a pack of toilet roll.

Mr Anyidoho said the two minors were asked to sell the pack of toilet roll to help the family purchase food to feed themselves and he had to give them the money but did not take the pack of toilet roll.

According to him, a few moments later, the whole family came to thank him because they had nothing at home to feed on and he had to use the story as an illustration to paint the difficulty some homes went through during the lockdown.

“I believe the President has taken a decision which is in the interest of the state, we must pray, assist and support him, we must adhere to the hygiene protocols including social distancing, hand washing with soap and water under running water, avoiding handshakes among others.

“The President can return with another address imposing another lockdown hence there should be no need for people to create fear and panic, more hunger deaths can be recorded compared to the deadly Coronavirus,” Mr Anyidoho cautioned.

  • Driver who stabbed passenger to death over social distancing charged with murder

A commercial vehicle driver Eric Denning, who stabbed one Kwesi Amele to death over social distancing in the Eastern Region has been charged with murder.

The driver was picked up immediately by the police but the mate is on the run in an incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

He was arraigned before the Koforidua District Magistrate Court “B” on April 22, 2020.

He was charged with murder but pleaded not guilty to the offence and has been remanded.

Eric Denning has been provisionally charged with murder and expected to reappear before Court in two weeks.

Family of the deceased want police to speed up investigations and they want justice to prevail.

Reports say the driver and mate picked a quarrel with the deceased and his brother who joined the vehicle on Suhum to Koforidua road after complaining that the driver has overloaded the Vehicle in breach with social distancing.

This created a heated argument in the Vehicle between passengers on the other side and the accused driver and mate.

Upon reaching Akwadum roundabout, the deceased and his brother angrily alighted, slammed the door of the vehicle while casting insinuations.

This angered the driver and mate to physically attack the two brothers. In the process, the mate allegedly pulled a knife for the driver who stabbed the deceased multiple times to death.

His brother also suffered multiple knife injuries but is currently in critical condition at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, President Akufo Addo, and various District and Municipal Assemblies have directed that drivers reduce the number of passengers they transport at a time to help observe social distancing protocols to minimize the risk of infection in public transport.

Vaccination has since been reactivated but the WHO is concerned about the outbreak in cases with no travel history.

The future of the Executive Committee was thrown into doubt on Wednesday when the Manhyia Palace announced that Dr. Kyei had presented his report on his three-year stewardship.

A three-man committee was subsequently set up by the King’s palace to investigate the circumstances surrounding the $240,000 FIFA fine over the transfer of Emmanuel Clottey as well as the failure of the club to meet the Club Licensing requirement.

The committee, chaired by a former chairman of the club, has four weeks to present its report over the two issues being investigated by the Manhyia Palace.

This sparked claims that Dr Kyei had been fired as had been done in the past when former chairmen of the club were relieved of their post when they presented their report on their tenure.

But Kwame Aboagye Mensah, personal assistant to Manhyia chief of staff, says the oil magnate stays in charge of the team until the report is presented over the recent problems in the team.

Bankroller of Tema Youth, Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer was left “surprised” Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okrakua borrowed money from government for clubs amid coronavirus pandemic.

The disease also called COVID-19 has hit several clubs in Ghana following the suspension of all football activities until further notice.

The GFA boss Kurt Okraku appealed to the government to include clubs in the GH¢1 billion Coronavirus Alleviation Programme being rolled out to cushion Ghanaians against the virus.

“I was surprised that Kurt Okraku went to government to borrow money for the clubs. For me I would have asked government to remove the 17.5% VAT they let us pay for gate proceeds for about two years so that the cost of football will be low and we will be able to generate revenue,” he told Asempa FM.

  • We will bring Grammy to Ghana Dark Suburb

Ghanaian rock band, Dark Suburb, has expressed hope that it will soon win a Grammy award for Ghana.

According to their publicist, Kpekpo Maxwell Justice (KMJ), even though he believes other Ghanaian musicians have what it takes to win a Grammy, he is convinced that Dark Suburb can make Ghana proud on that award scheme in no time.

KMJ also intimated that after going on hibernation for a while, Dark Suburb is back to treat music lovers in Ghana and the world over to quality music.

Dark Suburb is an alternative rock band from Ghana, a suburb of Africa that has adopted and refined culture of masquerades in the continent as their image. Thus, giving new impetus to a costume art form that is prevalent in many African societies.

The band wears skeleton masks to highlight the point of our shared humanity and to remind the world that we are one people regardless of sex, race or social status. The names of the members of the band represent some of the big names in the history of Africa.

The six-member band consists of KANKA BIZIN, SHAKA, SHAMBA, SAMORI TURE, AHHENATON, KHAMA.

The masks give the band a uniform identity and hide individual egos and differences just as they expect the people of the world to see themselves as an important unit in a big team working for a better world.

Dark Suburb represents the forgotten corners of the society wherein lurks great talent and potential. No matter who you are and where you are from, no matter what society says you are and where you must be, you can assert your place in this world and define who you want to be.

  • Bangladesh to turn back new Rohingya refugee boats – Minister

Bangladesh will not accept two boats carrying hundreds of reportedly starving Rohingya refugees, the country’s foreign minister said Thursday as calls grew to rescue the Muslim outcasts.

The new controversy over stranded Rohingya blew up just a week after dozens starved to death on a boat that was left at sea for two months before it could land.

Activists are fearful that large numbers of Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority from mostly Buddhist Myanmar, may be trapped on boats and unable to reach other countries.

The two latest boats are in international waters after human traffickers had tried to reach Malaysia, according to aid groups and a Rohingya community leader.

Bangladesh has ordered increased patrols in the Bay of Bengal to stop the boats entering, Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen said.

“Two boats carrying Rohingya are trying to get into our waters,” he said, adding that the vessels could have come from Myanmar’s Rakhine state following fighting between the military and rebel groups, or “somewhere else”.

“Our navy and coastguard are on alert and they have been instructed not to let these boats enter Bangladesh,” Momen said.

“No more Rohingya will be allowed in,” he added.

About one million Rohingya are in camps on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border having fled decades of persecution in their home region in Rakhine. Many want to leave the camps for other more affluent Asian nations.

Thousands of refugees died in the Andaman Sea in 2015 on rickety fishing vessels that tried to reach Malaysia and Thailand.

The boat that came ashore last week with some 390 Rohingya was forced back by the Malaysian navy. The surviving Rohingya have been put into coronavirus pandemic quarantine, organised by the UN refugee agency.

    ‘Hunger problem’

Rights group Amnesty International has said two fishing trawlers carrying some 500 Rohingya women, men and children are in the Bay of Bengal after being pushed away by Malaysia.

Bangladesh should rescue the stranded Rohingya, Amnesty said in a statement, and other governments in the region should “fulfil their shared responsibility to carry out search and rescue efforts”.

“We hope that Bangladesh will continue to welcome Rohingya refugees in these difficult times,” said Biraj Patnaik, Amnesty’s South Asia director.

A Rohingya leader at one of the huge refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district said there were about 280 people in total on the two boats.

“The Malaysian navy has turned them back. But the traffickers want to make another attempt to reach Malaysia,” said the leader, who had raised the alert about last week’s tragedy and spoke on condition of anonymity.

“I heard there is a hunger problem in the boats. But the traffickers don’t want to bring them back to Bangladesh.” The community leader said the traffickers would only be paid if the refugees reach Malaysia.

A week ago, Malaysia denied entry to a boat carrying around 200 Rohingya due to coronavirus fears, the air force said.

Already, a first tranche of about US$20 million has been granted and will be available by next week.

Addressing the press on plans to ensure food security during and after the public health crisis, sector minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto (MP) outlined a raft of measures being rolled out ahead of the upcoming planting season.

They include market surveillance, where market prices and food availability on the markets are monitored; provision of PPE for Extension Agents, development of guidelines for production, public education through video and print and facilitating inputs distribution.

Medium-term actions include facilitating access to credit for producers, aggregators and processors; supporting NAFCO to mop up strategic stocks for food security, re-establishing early warning systems to provide regular updates on food situation and establishing COVID-19 Fund for Agriculture and Food Security

Dr Afriyie Akoto further indicated that all flagship programmes, including the planting for food and jobs campaign, will proceed while the government works around the clock to secure additional funding, which will be channelled into dealing with issues of post-harvest losses and also mitigating the effects of COVID-19 on the agricultural sector.

He is hopeful that the additional request for funds will be granted for the benefit of the economy.

  • Children to be allowed to play outside in Spain

By the time children under 14 are allowed out of their homes again on Sunday, Spain’s lockdown will have been in place for six weeks.

The government has now given details of how it’ll work under a so-called 1-1-1 rule. Up to three children will be allowed out with one responsible adult for one hour and for up to 1km (0.6 miles) from their home.

Most families live in flats so for the 6.8 million children involved this is a big moment. They’ll be allowed to run, carry toys and a ball, and carry a scooter, between 0900 and 2100. But parks and playgrounds will stay out of bounds and social distancing will have to continue.

The government initially said children could only go to the shops with their parents but they relented when faced with a chorus of criticism and now say running, jumping and exercising will be allowed too.

  • I don’t think anyone can complain that food is expensive in Ghana – Agric Minister

Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie says even though he does not subscribe to the control of food prices no one can complain that food is expensive in Ghana.

He believes that there is enough food on the market hence prices have even dropped in some jurisdiction.

There have been calls from some people that the government must step in to control the prices of food as there seems to be a hike ever since COVID-19 surfaced.

He says he does not believe in controlling the prices of foods because it creates an artificial environment for the misallocation of resources.

“Unfortunately I am not a believer in controlling prices, it creates an artificial environment for misallocation of resources and that is a very simple economic reason why I don’t subscribe to it. In any case, we are talking about 3 million producers of farm produce, thousands of traders small and large, and in the markets, you see the large numbers of these traders, how do you go around and control prices? I think that an open pricing system that is being followed by the gov’t shows the kind of confidence we have that we will be able to supply food to the market for consumers at a very reasonable price. I don’t think anybody can complain in this country that food is expensive”.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie also assured Ghanaians that there is enough food supply in the country for even though COVID-19 has slowed farming activities.

According to the Minister, due to the government’s flagship program, Planting for Food and Jobs, the country has more than enough to take care of the citizens in this period.

  • Government renews curfew on Bunkpurugu

The curfew hours imposed on the Bunkpurugu township and its environs in the North East Region has been renewed from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am.

This is according to a statement signed by the Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery.

The Minister urged the “chiefs, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.”

The government, aside from the curfew, has also imposed a ban on all persons in the township “from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons”.

Anyone found culpable of this will be arrested and prosecuted, according to the statement.

    Curfew in Bole lifted

Many towns in some regions of Ghana are under curfew, most of whom are due to violent activities between the people.

Among a few are Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Oti Region, Bimbilla in the Northern Region, and Japekrom in the Bono Region.

In January 2020, the Interior Ministry lifted the curfew that had been on the Bole township and its environs in the Savannah Region since 2018.

The curfew was imposed due to tensions in the Bole traditional area in 2017 following fears of violence after the death of the Paramount Chief, Awuladese Pontomprong Mahama (II) in May.

According to a statement signed by the sector Minister, Ambrose Dery, this move was made based on the advice of the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the “genuine desire of the Chiefs and people of the area to sustain the peace” and improve the security situation in the area.

  • Vehicles that convey dead bodies must be disinfected – Environmental Health

Mrs. Sybil Boison, Volta Regional Environmental Health Officer, has underlined the need to properly disinfect vehicles used for conveying dead bodies.

She said this was necessary because moving such bodies carried a high risk of spreading contagious diseases.

The hospitals and mortuary operators must therefore consider working with drivers to take preventive measures, particularly, with respect to the non-designated vehicles.

Mrs. Boison made the call when she toured morgues in the Ho Municipality, to assess the implementation of precautionary measures to contain and halt the spread of the novel coronavirus – to seek the support and cooperation of the facility managers.

Staff of the facilities were asked to help maintain highest standards of practice, towards shielding visitors from potential risks of exposure.

She examined personal protection equipment, wash stations, and waste disposal points, and told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that “vivid inspections” would be undertaken to ensure strict compliance.

Mr. Anthony Amadotor, National Vice Chairman of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana, who heads the Ho Teaching Hospital morgue, cautioned against using passenger vehicles to carry dead bodies.

He pledged stronger collaboration to protect public health.

He said the body count in the facility had fallen since the outbreak of the virus, and added that an old cabinet was being restored for storage of corpses of those who died of COVID-19.

Other mortuaries in the Municipality are seeing a decline in bodies sent for hygienic storage until burial.

As a result, most clubs are struggling to pay the salaries of their players and the technical team.

Speaking to Asempa FM in an interview, he said “We as a club may not feel the impact compared to other clubs [money effect due to coronavirus]. The supporters are going through a lot. With the betting side, how will they be able to bet on leagues now,” he said.

  • Coronavirus: Miss Ghana 2020 goes virtual

Exclusive Events Ghana has found an innovative way of engaging Miss Ghana 2020 contestants on virtual platforms as a result of the coronavirus
    pandemic.

The pageant becomes the first to go virtual. Organizers have earlier announced that the grand finale of the 2020 pageant has been postponed until further notice.

This was after President Akufo-Addo imposed a ban on public gathering on March 15 and then followed with a partial lockdown in the Greater Accra Region, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi, which was subsequently lifted on April 19.

Because contestants could not come together to engage in weekly project activities, organizers decided to do it via virtual platforms.

Weekly evictions were also held every week until the number of contestants was cut from 35 to 21.

The number of votes each contestant accumulates and execution of projects given were the main instruments used in evicting contestants.

Some of the projects given to contestants ranged from steps adopted to help curb COVID-19, preparing of local delicacies and elaboration of a traditional custom peculiar to the regions the contestants represent.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Miss Ghana Organisation, Inna Mariam Patty, indicated that Miss Ghana beauty pageant is the only pageant globally finding innovative ways of working with contestants virtually.

She commended her team for their hard work and support.

“As indicated earlier, a new date will be communicated depending on how the World fares with the pandemic,” she added.

The Chief Justice, Justice Anim Yeboah, has reiterated that the measures adopted to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 in the courts across the country are still holding despite the lifting of the partial lockdown in selected parts of the country.

He said the measures were aimed at decongesting the courts in order to observe the advised social distancing protocols.

A release issued to the Ghana News Agency said the arrangements outlined in previous statements issued on March 16 and 20, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the courts across the country would continue.

It said the courts would practice strict case management techniques such that only parties and witnesses in cases listed to be heard on particular dates and fixed times would be allowed into the court room to avoid large gatherings.

It asked judges and magistrates to adjourn cases to specific times on given dates, to limit the number of people that would be allowed into the court room, hear cases which were extreme urgency, and as far as possible exercised great restraint in remanding accused persons, in order to avoid overcrowding in the prisons and police cells.

The release said cause lists should also be reduced drastically for few cases to be listed for hearing.

It said judges and magistrates should also dispense with the appearance of convicted and remand prisoners where possible; and in criminal appeals, the courts where possible, should dispense with the appearance of appellants who are in prison custody.

  • China to give WHO $30 million more after US freezes funds

China announced Thursday it will give another $30 million to the World Health Organization to help in the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic, days after Washington said it would freeze funding.

The US, which is the WHO’s biggest contributor, accused the organisation last week of “mismanaging” the COVID-19 crisis, drawing ire from Beijing as both countries spar over the deadly virus.

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the new donation would be in addition to a previous $20 million committed, and would help “strengthen developing countries’ health systems”.

He added that China’s contribution to the UN agency “reflects the support and trust of the Chinese government and people for the WHO”.

In announcing the funding freeze last week, US President Donald Trump accused the WHO of covering up the seriousness of the coronavirus outbreak in China before it spread.

He has also charged the WHO with being “very China-centric” despite Washington’s heavy funding.

According to Trump, US taxpayers provided between $400 million and $500 million per year to the WHO, while “in contrast, China contributes roughly $40 million a year and even less”.

Trump also claimed the outbreak could have been contained with “very little death” had the WHO assessed the situation in China accurately.

The deadly virus, which has claimed more than 181,000 lives worldwide, first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, which was locked down in late January to curb the spread.

It continued its global march, however, with cases reported in 193 countries and territories to date, ravaging economies around the globe.

Beijing has urged the US to support WHO-led international action against the pandemic after it halted funding, while observers warned that the US freeze would have consequences for the WHO’s other disease control programmes around the world.

    China defends WHO

China has denied Western suggestions that it covered up the extent of the virus outbreak, rejecting claims it has an overly cosy relationship with the WHO as well.

But local authorities did silence doctors who tried to raise the alarm about the virus in Wuhan in December.

An investigation determined that police “inappropriately” punished one of the whistleblowers, Li Wenliang, an eye doctor who later died of the COVID-19 disease.

The WHO, under the leadership of Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has been accused by Washington of uncritically accepting China’s early assertions that the virus was not spread between humans, and of wrongly praising Beijing’s “transparency” over the magnitude of the crisis.

The pandemic, combined with the threat of a halt in US funding, marks the biggest challenge to date in Tedros’ near three-year tenure.

“Supporting the WHO at this critical time in the global fight against the epidemic is defending the ideals and principles of multilateralism and upholding the status and authority of the United Nations,” Geng said.

The US is the country worst-hit by the coronavirus, with a death toll of around 46,000.

Numbers in China have dwindled as it begins to cautiously lift virus control mea

sures, although fears remain over a potential resurgence and imported infections from abroad.
