  • Owusu-Abeyie recalls losing the FIFA Golden Ball to Messi

Former Arsenal winger Quincy Owusu-Abeyie is baffled by his failure to reach his potential as he recounted his best days with the Dutch U20 team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship which featured Lionel Messi.

Owusu-Abeyie and Messi were the names that resonated loudly on the lips of every football fan across the world ahead of the youth tournament in the Netherlands.

But it was the Argentine wizard who emerged the best player of the championship after hitting six goals to help the South American giants clinch the trophy.

Owusu-Abeyie went on to have decent career playing for the likes of Arsenal, Malaga, Celta Vigo, Panathinaikos and Crystal Palace.

The now 33-year-old was quizzed why he was beaten to the Golden Ball award at the tournament by Messi.

“Yes, and look where we are each now …”, the footballer replied in a friendly way.

“Ufff … Well, imagine what I asked myself. I still dream of that moment, of that tournament, today. There I played like never before, it was my best version I hope some day to play like this continuously. Why didn’t I stay the same? It is not easy, it is not easy to answer … I still trust that one day I will try to climb and return to that level,” he told Besoccer.

In January 2007, the tricky wideman switched his nationality to Ghana after failing to earn a call-up into the senior Dutch national team.

He played for Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa as the Black Stars reached the quarterfinals stage.

  • Kwadwo Asamoah linked with €4 million move to TSG Hoffenheim

Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah could be sold to German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim for €4 million.

The Ghana international has been restricted to few matches due to his physical frailties.

Asamoah’s current contract with the Nerazzurri expires in June 2021 and the would like to cash in on him.

His agent Federico Pastorello has an excellent relationship with Hoffenheim and that could make his move easy.

  • Christians urged to strengthen faith in God amidst coronavirus scare

Christians have been advised to strengthen their faith in God to benefit from His unlimited power that goes beyond human abilities and capabilities, as the world strive to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a message shared with members of the Gospel Faith Ministry in Accra on Sunday via social media, the Reverend Isaac Obed Asamoah, Head Pastor of the Church, said: “The coronavirus scare will surely pass as all believers turned to seek the face of God in prayers in the closet of their homes.”

“We need to hold on to God, we need to petition Jesus Christ, who has answers to all problems. God is still Supreme; and they that know their God shall stay strong and do exploits”, he said as he quoted Daniel 11: 33.

“In a period where most people are getting restless and confused over the COVID-19 pandemic, they need not fear but rather turn to God who is ever ready to intervene in any hopeless situation once people turn to Him for solutions.”

Rev. Asamoah said people should also understand that, most often, good came out of every bad situation and there would always be light at the end of the tunnel by the grace of God, who is still ruling in the affairs of all nations.

“God cares about his people and so we need to petition Him as the President of the Republic has directed,” he said.

“As a nation, we should not be afraid, we just have to petition God, for He alone can save a world…,” Rev. Asamoah assured all Ghanaians.

  • Coronavirus: Pastors storm radio stations to reach members

Pastors and church leaders in Ho are queuing for airtime to reach members of their congregation through radio broadcast on Sundays.

This follows the President’s directive suspending social gatherings to contain and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Churches, which hardly preached on air, rushed to local radio stations for space.

Regular preachers on radio extended their time to an hour and beyond following the temporary closure of churches.

At Swiss FM, the Ghana News Agency was told five more pastors had booked airtime to preach on Sundays apart from one pastor who normally preached Sunday dawn.

Three more pastors were also said to be struggling for airtime on Global FM to preach on Sundays, with many more in line.

The situation is not different at Tosh FM, West FM, Kuul FM and Ho FM.

Meanwhile many churches have shut their doors to worshippers in line with the President’s directive.

At the Ho Dome St. Cecilia Catholic Church, about three persons were at the Parish around 0830 to offer “private prayers”.

At the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Dela Cathedral, about 13 persons, including a priest, gathered to record a sermon for live streaming on social media.

Government last Sunday imposed a ban on all public gatherings including conferences, funerals, festivals, political rallies, church services and Islamic worships for four weeks.

The ban is in response to the coronavirus pandemic after an inter-ministerial Committee meeting.

  • Parliament has not legalized wee for public consumption – MP

Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has rebutted claims that cannabis has been legalised by the Ghanaian Parliament for public consumption.

According to the two-time legislator, Parliament only legalised the use of the weed for medicinal purposes.

Speaking to Michael Ofosu-Afriyie Sunday evening, Mr Amankwah expressed worry about the erroneous claims some members of the public have since the passage of the Narcotics Act into law have been making.

He noted that more worrying is the attitude of some members of the NDC whose actions seem to fuel such unfounded claims within the public domain.

“I am totally surprised that people see the action Parliament took last week as legalizing the consumption of weed in public life because that was not so”, the Manhyia North MP posited.

Giving more details, Hon Amankwah said Parliament in legalizing the use of cannabis was clear in its mind and that was for medicinal purposes only.

He noted that the legislative assembly knowing that all usage of cannabis was illegal had to decriminalize some portions of the existing law so that medical facilities could use weed for the production of drugs.

The NPP MP also revealed that the house enhanced the powers of the Narcotics Control Board to a Commission status to reflect its new mandate.

The Commission, the Ecowas Parliament Member noted would now be able to monitor, inspect and deal with all forms of usage of narcotics and also streamline the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

“We did three things in Parliament with regards to the new narcotics law and that was to decriminalize the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes and also enhanced the powers of the board which is now in a Commission status as well as set boundaries for the use all narcotics in the country”.

Stating the facts, Hon Amankwah said nowhere in the discussion of the act in parliament was there allowance given to the smoking of weed or cannabis by members of the public.

He noted strict sanctions and punitive measures still portend in the use of cannabis.

The MP said no one can use cannabis for any purposes in the new law except those who deal in pharmaceutical drugs and medicinal supplements.

Hon Amankwah warned the public to be mindful that anyone caught smoking or using cannabis publicly or growing same would be arrested and prosecuted in the law courts.

“I am hereby cautioning the public not to engage in the use of cannabis or any other illegal drug since the use of same is still punishable by law”, the MP stressed.

  • Bole District: I didnt order sack of GES Director over pickup – DCE

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bole, Madam Veronica Alele Heming, has said that she did not order the District Director of Ghana Education Service (GES) for Bole Mr Vincent Kwesi to handover and vacate his office and that the order for him to vacate the office and hand over to a new Director is his own doing.

Speaking exclusively to Bole based Nkilgi FM Madam Alele debunked information going round in Bole District that she was responsible for the sack of the GES Director Mr Vincent for alleged insubordination for not bringing a new pickup given GES directors across the country for her to commission and do funfair with it.

The DCE explained that the Bole GES Director has been on retirement since last year and has refused to leave his office.

She said; “My Education Director has been on pension since last year (6 months or more) and he is not being paid. He is on pension and he is not going because he said there was a mistake on his birth certificate”.

The DCE asked; “Who sacks a pensioner?” She said as a Director Mr Vincent should have known that his birth certificate has a mistake and so it is irresponsible on the part of anyone to say she sacked him the GES Director.

“The GES Director should not put his problems on me”; the DCE stated. Explaining more on the issue surrounding the GES new pickup for the Bole District, the DCE said Mr Vincent Akwesi “never told me that he got the pickup. I was asked from Accra if l received my district pick-up. All l said was that l will call them back. I called the GES Director to find out if we got our pick. He said yes and l asked why he did not inform me. I never even called back the lady at Accra who called”.

The DCE added; “If the pick up disappears who will they ask? I have just been asked to approve money for same pickup for service in Tamale. We were here when a pick up vanished mysteriously in the Savannah region and so I need to take responsibility and precaution as the Chief Executive of the District”.

Nkilgi FM gathered that Mr Vincent Kwesi cried like a baby after he was called on phone to immediately handover to the GES Director for the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

Concerned Officers of the GES in Bole District had to keep an eye on him so he does not do anything silly.

When Nkilgi FM contacted Mr Vincent Kwesi who has since left Bole he confirmed the directive for him to hand over and that it was not a sack from GES.

Mr Vincent said he was called on Thursday 19th March, 2020 and told to hand over the following day which he finds surprising and feel he has been treated unfairly.

He explained that he is currently in court contesting issues surrounding his age and retirement and was surprised receiving a call from the Northern Regional Director of GES ordering him to hand over to a new person.

Mr Vincent told Nkilgi FM he went through a series of harassment and was not allowed to do his work properly prior to the surprising directive for him to hand over.

He disclosed how the Savannah Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) threatened to deal with him for doing a routine transfer of Teachers including one Hajia Zanabu. He disclosed that he was made to reverse some transfers just to save himself from threats.

  • Liverpool, Arsenal monitoring Ndicka

Liverpool and Arsenal have been monitoring the Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka this season.

They had been among the clubs tracking the France Under-21 international before the suspension of football across Europe due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

Spanish sides Valencia and Sevilla and the two Milan clubs have also been keen on Ndicka, who is one of a limited number of promising left-footed centre-backs.

Arsenal signed Pablo Mari – a left-footed centre-back – from Flamengo in January, albeit on an initial loan deal, although they do have the option to make the transfer permanent this summer.

Premier League leaders Liverpool, meanwhile, could be in the market for a new centre-back due to the uncertain future of Dejan Lovren, who has made only nine Premier League starts this season.

It is also uncertain whether the UK transfer window will open as scheduled on June 18, with no definitive date for when the current domestic season will be resumed.

Sky Sports News reported this week that FIFA is reviewing the situation with regards to player registrations, with the possibility that players could run out of contract at clubs before the season restarts.

However, clubs are understood to be continuing their research and due diligence into potential transfer targets, despite scouts currently being unable to watch them in games.

Ndicka, 20, has made 14 starts and one substitute appearance in the Bundesliga this season, more recently being deployed as a left-back, including in the Europa League last-32 triumph over RB Salzburg and last-16 first-leg defeat to Basel.

  • I have done nothing wrong – Yusif Chibsah to Kotoko

FIFA intermediary Yusif Chibsah insists he cannot be blamed for the standoff between Asante Kotoko and Esperance over the unpaid transfer fee of Kwame Bonsu.

”I have not done anything wrong. I really feel sorry for the club for this situation, but please people should not blame me. I have not done anything wrong. I did the best for my player and the best for Kotoko,” the former club captain revealed in a Facebook post.

The ex-Ghana international helped transfer his client to the Tunisian outfit for a fee of US$ 150,000 in June last year but the defending champions have since defaulted in paying.

It is revealed that Esperance want to offset that amount with an US$ 180,000 debt owed them by Kotoko for illegally registering their player Emmanuel Clottey.

The Ghanaian giants registered Clottey even though the striker had a running contract with the Tunis-based side.

This situation means the Porcupine Warriors will to pay an additional US$ 30,000

”At least I didn’t know there was a debt of US$ 180,000 that Kotoko were supposed to settle with Esperance and that’s why all this issue is up,” he added.

Yusif Chibsah has been accused of stoking the fire between the two clubs having pocketed his is 20% commission on the deal.

But the former Ghana 23 captain has dispelled all that.

”There have been a lot of rumours and stories that I personally benefited from this transfer,” he explained.

”Some are even saying Esperance have paid a lot of money to me as agency fee and because of that I’m not doing any effort to get Kotoko to get their money. These are all false.

”I have not benefited 1 euro or 1 dollar from this transfer. I have not taken any commission from Asante Kotoko or Esperance. Nothing. No money at all.”

  • Mohammed Salisu is giving something to talk about in LaLiga

Among the new stars of the LaLiga defense, is the central Mohammed Salisu of Real Valladolid, whose solid and balanced work in his debut season suggests that he has a long and successful career ahead of him.

The 20-year-old Ghanaian central defender from Valladolid has been one of the most impressive defenders among LaLiga Santander clubs in the 2019/20 season, overcoming personal battles with brilliant and veteran forwards like Álvaro Morata of Atlético de Madrid, Willian José de Real Sociedad and Borja Iglesias from Real Betis.

After debuting in LaLiga Santander last August, Salisu has started in 26 of Valladolid’s first 27 games, forming part of a solid defense that has been key for Sergio Fernández’s team to have spent most of the season away from the drop zone.

Born in Accra in 1999, Salisu was signed by Valladolid in the autumn of 2017 , after being recruited by the ‘African Talent Football Academy’ in his country.

By the following January, the 17-year-old had already broken into Valladolid’s B team in the third category, impressing enough to become a starter for the rest of the season.

In 2018/19, Salisu regularly trained on weekdays with Sergio’s first team players, while playing league games with team B and Copa del Rey games with the first team.

The opening day of the 2019/20 marked his debut in Laliga Santander, where he played a key role as the Valladolid started the season with a win 2-1 against Real Betis.

The following weekend, the 1-1 draw at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu proved that Salisu and his teammates could compete with anyone in LaLiga Santander.

Over the following weeks and months, Salisu placed himself at the center of Valladolid’s defense alongside seasoned Kiko Olivas , and the pair’s strength and reliability was key to achieving a streak of six games without scoring in 10 LaLiga matches .

The 33 goals scored in LaLiga’s first 27 games are actually fewer than a team has received in the bottom half of the table.

The individual numbers support the good impression made by Salisu, quick on the ground and comfortable with the ball at his feet with his 1.80 meters tall and 82 kilos.

He is 81% successful in passing, and few defenders, young or old, have enough discipline to receive just two yellow cards throughout the season.

Most notably, no LaLiga player has done more than his 136 punches so far. His first goal in LaLiga in a 2-0 home win against Eibar in October was from just a couple of meters from the net, but he scored three vital points. In early January, he stepped forward to provide the pass that center forward Enes Unal transformed for a crucial draw in the final 2-2 minutes at home against Leganes.

Health authorities at Paga in the Kasena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region are currently monitoring a suspected case of coronavirus.

The suspected case was detected yesterday by health workers at the Nakolo Clinic and efforts are being made to ascertain the condition.

The patient, it is gathered, came to the facility from one of the nearby villages close to the border on the side to Burkina Faso to seek health care.

According to the District Director of Health Service, Hypolite Yeleduor, who shared details with Ghanaweb’s Senyalah Castro, the workers after admitting the patient observed symptoms similar to the disease and detained him for further observation.

  • NPP chairman leads police to arrest three suspected illegal miners in Ellembelle

The Constituency Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Mr. Samuel Akainyah has led the District Police Command to arrest three suspected illegal miners popularly called “galamseyers” operating in three communities.

They were apprehended in an operation conducted by the Command upon a tip-off and complaint by the Constituency Chairman to protect the environment from being destroyed.

The suspects and their accomplices who managed to escape from arrest, started their operations somewhere in August 2019, at Anwia, Teleku-Bokazo and Nkroful, have polluted the River Subri, their main source of drinking water.

It would be recalled that the last three weeks the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area led the District Police Command to seize seven Excavators from the areas.

But in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent Daniel Kaku after the arrest at the Esisma Police Station, the NPP Constituency Chairman Samuel Akainyah disclosed why he led the police to arrest the suspected Galamseyers.

He said some residents in the area complained to him after the operation by the DCE and the police that some residents were using the seized excavators to destroy the land.

He added that after realizing that the fight against the galamsey could not be done by President Akufo-Addo alone, he quickly reported the case to the District Police Commander and according to him, the Commander instructed his men together with him to storm the galamsey sites.

The Chairman said he would not sit aloof and allow some selfish people to destroy the land.

He could not fathomed why the seized seven excavators could be used by the galamseyers for their illegalities.

The Chairman who suspected the DCE might have allowed the galamseyers to return to the sites, called on the three communities to rally behind the government in the fight against illegal mining.

He, therefore, took the opportunity to call on the three communities to support government to fight the menace.

“Fighting against galamsey is a shed responsibility and government alone can fight it so I will call on these three Communities to support the fight to protect the water”, he emphasized.

He added, “In fact I don’t understand why the Excavators which were seized by the DCE three weeks ago and we went to same areas and these Galamseyers were using it and Daniel Kaku I will urge you to demand answer from the DCE”.

He also used the opportunity to advise the youth involving in the galamsey activities to stop it.

On the way forward, the Chairman advised the youth to refrain from galamsey as government will soon roll out the Community Mining programme in the area.

When contacted the DCE Mr. Kwasi Bonzoh said he met owners of the seven excavators and asked them to reclaim the land.

Mr. Bonzoh explained that he could not remove the excavators from the site to a different location was that the galamseyers were able to remove the control boards from them.

He vehemently debunked rumours circulating on social media that he was involved in the galamsey activities.

He, therefore, challenged anybody with evidence that he DCE was neck deep in the galamsey operations.

He applauded the Chairman and other Constituency executives for their resolve to kick against the menace.

He, therefore, warned all chiefs and other residents to desist from doing galamsey in the district adding that, anybody found in the activities would not be spared.

On his part, the District Police Commander DSP Thomas Bayor explained why the galamseyers returned to the sites after their first operations.

He said his men were few and also they lack logistics to fight the galamseyers and therefore calling for assistance from the government to stop them for good.

The police has promised to investigate the three suspected galamseyers and act accordingly.

A visit by GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent Daniel Kaku to these galamsey sites, confirm that the ‘Subre’ river which is a source of drinking water to these three Communities (Anwia, Teleku-Bokazo and Nkroful), has been polluted beyond any measure.

The galamsey operations were also affecting residents and giving them sleepless nights as the galamsey sites were closer to their places of abode.

Some residents who spoke to Daniel Kaku were appealing to government to, as a matter of urgency, bring back Operation Vanguard to the sites to stop the Galamseyers and stop relying on the Ellembelle District Police Command alone.

  • From Wuhan to Ghana : Breaking the AnÉ”na Okusubentsir family ties?

The outbreak of the Covid 19 virus in Wuhan seemed too far away from touching base here in Ghana ever. The hypothesis from our weather being too hot and so making us immune to the deadly virus made a lot of Ghana’s citizens a bit too relaxed and confident that we were almost all, if not all safe. Now the virus is here with us.

As a woman and a mother I would like to look at the impact of the virus on the ordinary Ghanaian from two angles. The President’s decision to have all schools closed indefinitely is really laudable. The ban on public gatherings apt.

But just thinking aloud: Many families saw their children off to boarding schools barely two weeks ago. Basic needs as required were provided from mostly the meagre incomes ( not blaming anyone in particular for that though). Parents and guardian breathed a sigh of relief after accomplishing that feat. Families settled in to manage the little resources left for those at home.

Staples and a few other groceries are stored for use of those at home. The budget is very tight. Unfortunately, due to this pandemic, students have come back home to join their families and share with them the little their parents have reserved for those at home. I dread the pressure this will place on families: the stress and frustrations, the fights in the bedrooms due to stress from unexpected and unplanned expenditures among many others.

Soon there will be shortages of various items and provisions. Prices of rice, tin food, detergents, sanitary items and many more will shoot up too. We are already facing a devastating situation where hand sanitizer sellers have arbitrarily increased prices more than 200%. What next? Families have lost loved ones, met and taken decisions on burial and funeral dates.

Our communal society as Ghanaians does not permit the adage “let the dead bury their dead”. I flinch when I think of the unresolvable feuds that we eminently face. ‘Ananse ayÉ›m’ moso mÉ›yÉ›n’. If you are too obedient not to attend family gatherings especially funerals as has been directed by the President of the republic, be prepared to bury your mother and father alone when they pass on. This is just a tip of the iceberg.

Covid 19 is much more deadly and crippling than we may ever imagine.

Examples: 1. most emergency workers have no cars of their own 2. Ambulance service is sclerotic 3. So public transport is part of critical transit system. 4. • South Africa to build 40km fence along Zimbabwe border

Authorities in South Africa have said they will build a 40km (25 miles) fence along its border with Zimbabwe to prevent undocumented migrants from entering and spreading coronavirus – even though the neighbouring country has no confirmed cases.

The planned fence is to be erected on either side of the Beitbridge Land Port of Entry to “ensure that no undocumented or infected persons cross into the country,” Patricia de Lille, the public works minister, said in a statement on Thursday.

As of Friday, South Africa has reported 202 confirmed cases of the virus and no deaths. President Cyril Ramaphosa has already ordered 35 of 53 land entry points closed.

“This measure will … not be effective if the fences at the border are not secure, which in many places, they are not,” de Lille said in the statement.

“All 40km of fence will be finished within one month. Local labour will be sourced by the contractor.

“We are certainly not xenophobic. We have had thorough consultations with all the countries that are our neighbours. What is important for South Africa is to protect our own citizens and people coming into our country because at the border post now, you’ve got health inspectors and you’ve got environmental professionals and they are doing the testing and screening at the border. But if somebody just walks over the border, there are no such facilities,” she added.

South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised country, has long sought to reduce irregular migration from Zimbabwe, which it sees as a threat to local jobs in a country with unemployment of around 30 percent.

Countries around the world have been cancelling flights, banning travel from certain countries and tightening controls at borders to prevent the virus’s spread.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 209,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19, the infection caused by the novel coronavirus, around the world.

The virus has claimed the lives of at least 8,700, according to the UN health body.

The outbreak reached Africa later than other continents, but at least 33 countries have now confirmed cases, with 13 reported deaths.

  • Tunisia orders lockdown due to coronavirus, postpones loan repayments for poor

Tunisian President Kais Saied on Friday ordered a general lockdown, restricting public movement to counter the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking in a televised broadcast, Saied said he was asking the majority of people to stay at home and stop movement between Tunisian cities.

The government later said in a statement the lockdown would come into force on Sunday and last until April 4.

The announcement came a day after the tiny North African country registered its first coronavirus death. The southern Mediterranean country has reported 54 confirmed cases of coronavirus and one death.

Mosques, cafés and markets have been closed, and the country’s land and maritime borders have also been shut with international flights suspended to try to contain the pandemic.

    Loan repayments for poor postponed

Tunisian banks will postpone the repayment of loans by poorer citizens by six months to help alleviate the social and economic impact of the crisis, banking sources said.

“There is no need for fear or panic, the state will be with you,” said Saied said in a televised broadcast.

“I call on Tunisians to stay at home and to go out only to meet the most urgent needs… The state will provide food and vital services such as health and security.”

Tunisia now expects an economic recession, prompting the central bank on Tuesday to cut its key interest rate by 100 basis points.

  • Dr Kwame Kyei should resign- Former Kotoko CEO Jarvis Preprah

Former Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Javies Preprah, says Executive Director of the club Dr. Kwame Kyei should relinquish his post to save him from the impending embarrassment as the woes of the club continues to deepen.

Asante Kotoko is in crisis due to poor managerial decisions which has seen one of its management member Edmund Ackah resign from his position as the Greater Accra rep.

According to Jarvis, the way and manner the team is being managed under the current administration is appalling.

“Dr. Kwame Kyei has done his best for the club but I think its time for him to go and hand over the team to his Royal Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II”, he told Happy 98.9FM.

“There is a lot going on with the club, players are not happy and complaining, there are issues with player transfers, strike sponsorship, and many others. This all shows management has failed.

“We all have to check whether the team is progressing or not. There has been too much talk about the management style of Kotoko which should be a concern. For someone like Edmund Ackah to resign should tell you that all is not well with the club.

“He has done his part and I think he should just go to Manhyia and hand over the team”.

Asante Kotoko currently has to deal with issues with FIFA as they have been ordered to pay $180,000 to Tunisian giants Esperance or else be relegated from the Ghana Premier League.
