  • Yusif Chibsah explains why Esperance are refusing to pay Kwame Bonsu’s transfer fee to Kotoko

Former Asante Kotoko captain Yusif Chibsah has provided reasons why Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis are refusing to pay the $150k transfer fee for midfielder, Kwame Bonsu, affectionately called Kwame Conte.

The three times African champions came for the 24-year old (Kwame Bonsu) in 2019 as a replacement for Ivorian Franck Kom who left the Tunisians to join Qatari side Al-Rayyan SC but have since refused to pay the transfer fee to Asante Kotoko.

According to Chibsah, who is the agent of Conte and the leader of the agency that brokered the deal, Esperance are alleging that the Porcupine Warriors are owing them a sum of $180k for the case involving Emmanuel Clottey and Kotoko is even supposed to give them a balance of $30k to settle the debt.

“They said Asante Kotoko are owing them $180k dollars so Kotoko should rather pay them back $30k and I asked them how Kotoko came to be indebted to them. They sent a copy of the decision from FIFA on the Clottey case to me and I also sent it to the lawyer and informed him that, this is the reason why Esperance are refusing to pay the money.”

“But the lawyer told me that Esperance had no case against Kotoko after going through the legal documents we got from Esperance. According to the lawyer, Kotoko was held joint liable by FIFA because they did not do due diligence before signing Clottey, something which wouldn’t have happened if they had done due diligence on the player,” said Chibsah on the Kumasi based Nhyira FM.

    BACKGROUND:

In 2016, FIFA ordered Asante Kotoko and Emmanuel Clottey to pay $153,000 to Tunisian side Esperance for illegally registering Emmanuel Clottey.

Clottey joined Kotoko in 2015 but had his contract terminated after the North African giants contested against his move. However, he never played a competitive match for Kotoko.

The striker cancelled his contract with Esperance prematurely to join Asante Kotoko but FIFA ruled that he was at fault and was handed a hefty US$ 180,000 fine.

  • FIFA orders Kotoko to be relegated next month if they fail to pay Esperance $180k debt

FIFA has ordered that Kumasi Asante Kotoko must be relegated from the Ghana Premier League by next month if the Porcupine Warriors fail to pay the full $180,000 owed Tunisian giants Esperance.

The Porcupine Warriors have just 18 days to settle the long-standing debt or they will be playing in Ghana’s second tier league and will still be required to pay the debt.

The Kumasi-based giants were ordered to pay Esperance by April 6 or the Ghana FA will be ordered by FIFA to relegate the two-time African champions to the Division One League.

The Porcupine Warriors have received the letter from the world governing body and the Ghana FA has also been informed of the impending sanction.

Esperance have already frozen $150,000 they have to pay Kotoko over the transfer of Kwame Bonsu which means the Ghanaian side must be pay $30,000 to clear the debt.

Kotoko now have just over two weeks to mobilize the whopping $30,000 to pay Esperance over the contentious transfer of former Berekum Chelsea striker Emmanuel Clottey.

“Kotoko have received a letter from FIFA which orders them to pay us $180,000 for the wrongful signing of Emmanuel Clottey,” Esperance vice President Walid Arem told Nhyira FM

“We don’t owe them but rather they owe us $30,000 and they have to settle us before the date stated in the letter from FIFA.”

“We bought Kwame Bonsu for $150,000 and they also owe us $180,000. We need the money badly, so we’re waiting for it.”

Kotoko sparked their own woes when they reported the Tunisian club to FIFA claiming the transfer fee of their former midfielder Kwame Bonsu was still unpaid.

But Esperance hit back by responding to FIFA to remind them that Kotoko had still not paid the $180,000 which led to the letter from the world governing body to the Ghanaian side.

The current Kotoko management is struggling to find the documents for Clottey’s transfer after he joined the club from Esperance five years ago under controversial circumstances.

FIFA ruled that Clottey signed for Kotoko while he was still under contract with Esperance which led to the $180,000 transfer amount sanction by FIFA.

The National Media Commission (NMC) has praised the media for showing solidarity towards the fight against coronavirus through its reportage.

It has however asked practitioners to maintain balance in their news items by relying on official sources for accurate information on the pandemic so as not to downplay its gravity.

  • Coronavirus: UK stocks dive despite stimulus plans

UK stocks tumbled on Wednesday as major UK and US stimulus plans failed to quell worries about the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The FTSE 100 index of top UK firms dived more than 5%, with aerospace firms, travel companies and housing firms leading the declines.

The pound meanwhile hit a six-month low against the dollar to trade at $1.1966.

It came despite the US on Tuesday outlining a $1tn (£830bn) package to support the world’s biggest economy.

UK chancellor Rishi Sunak also revealed a £350bn stimulus package for UK firms, including £330bn of business loan guarantees.

It also included aid to cover a business rates holiday and grants for retailers and pubs. Help for airlines is also being considered.

Mr Sunak told a news conference: “Never in peacetime have we faced an economic fight like this one.”

US stock market futures were also indicating a weaker open for Wall Street on Wednesday, despite the main indexes rebounding more than 5% on Tuesday.

The stimulus measures taken globally also failed to buoy Asian stocks. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 ended Wednesday 1.7% lower, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong fell by 3.3%, and China’s Shanghai Composite lost 1.8%.

On Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he supports sending money directly to Americans as part of a $1tn stimulus plan aimed at averting an economic crisis caused by the virus.

The overall aid package would be larger than the US response to the 2008 financial crisis, amounting to nearly a quarter of what the US federal government spent last year.

In Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is reportedly forming a panel of key economic ministers and Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda to discuss measures to prop up the economy.

The move, which would bring Japan in line with other nations, is designed at averting an economic crisis in the country, which some fear could tip into recession.

Big shifts in the stock market are often in the news, whether they are booms or falls owing to coronavirus or the financial crisis.

As companies grow, they issue shares. The largest companies in the UK have shares which are bought and sold on the London Stock Exchange.

Their collective performance is often quoted amid a blizzard of numbers that may feel confusing and irrelevant. Rarely does anyone mention during a coffee with friends that the FTSE 100 has dropped well below 7,000 points.

But there are good reasons why this performance affects your life and finances.

Many people’s initial reaction to “the markets” is that they are not directly affected, because they do not invest money.

Yet there are millions of people with a pension – either private or through work – who will see their savings (in what is known as a defined contribution pension) invested by pension schemes. The value of their savings pot is influenced by the performance of these investments.

The number of people dying from coronavirus in Italy has risen by 475 in one day to nearly 3,000 – the biggest increase since the outbreak.

There are a total of 35,713 confirmed cases in the country, with more than 4,000 having successfully recovered.

Lombardy, the worst-hit region, recorded 319 deaths in one day.

Italy is the world’s worst-affected country after China, where the virus originated last year. At least 8,758 people have died, most in China.

The vast majority of the more than 200,000 confirmed cases – 80% – have occurred in Europe and the Western Pacific region, which includes much of Asia, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

Many countries have taken drastic measures, including social distancing and cancelling major events to help slow transmission and reduce pressure on the health systems.

“But to suppress and control epidemics, countries must isolate, test, treat and trace,” the WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.

Italy has been on lockdown for almost two weeks as authorities try to halt the progress of the virus.

People have been asked to stay indoors – but the number of deaths has continued to spiral.

The WHO’s emergencies director, Mike Ryan, said this was probably due to the “astonishing” number of cases within the health systems, as well as the high number of elderly people in the population at large.

Dr Tedros hailed the beginning of the first vaccine trial so soon after the emergence of the virus as “an incredible achievement”.

  • Coronavirus and the workforce behind the testing in Ghana

Coronaviruses (CoV) are large family of viruses that causes illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

The pandemic coronavirus Infection (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China after the outbreak of person-to-person transmission.

Globally, over one hundred and fifty thousand (150,000) cases have been confirmed with more than five thousand (5,000) deaths recorded and over seventy thousand (70,000) cases recovered. In Africa, as at 16th March 2020, three hundred and seventy-six (376) cases have been confirmed with seven (7) deaths recorded and thirty-nine (39) cases recovered.

    Ghana has six (6) cases confirmed without any record of death and recovery. The President of the Republic immediately addresses the nation on measures taken to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Earlier on, the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) have also taken measures to curb the spread of the disease. These measures include but not limited to;

    1. Alert message sent to all regions in Ghana on the outbreak in addition to guidance information on the disease.

    2. Enhanced surveillance at points of entry especially the Kotoka International Airport.

    3. Laboratory testing of COVID-19 in suspected human cases by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

However, Ghana currently has two testing facilities the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine.

The questions most Ghanaians are asking are –

    1. Why only these two testing facilities for COVID-19 in Ghana?

The answer is that Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine are the two well-equipped laboratories with resources needed for testing the pandemic coronavirus (COVID-19).

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the most widely used testing method is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). It is widely used in virology and molecular biology to rapidly make millions of copies of a specific DNA sample for scientific analyses. The two (2) most common types of PCR used are the Nested RT-PCR and the Real-time RT-PCR. Real-time RT-PCR has emerged as a technological innovation and is playing an ever-increasing role in clinical diagnostics and research laboratories. Due to its capacity to generate both qualitative and quantitative results, it is considered an essential device. In Ghana, the Real-time RT-PCR is employed by professionals to rapidly detect the pandemic coronavirus infection. Considering the capacity, application and importance of this device, most government health facilities should be provided with at least one PCR machine.

The COVID-19 should be a wake-up call for government to well-equip the Public Health Laboratories, Teaching Hospital Laboratories and Regional Hospital Laboratories with equipment and accoutrements needed for the testing of special cases like the current coronavirus. Let me echo that “a hospital without a well-equipped laboratory is deficient and does not qualify to be a hospital.”

    2. Who are the professionals behind the testing of the pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ghana?

The answer is Medical Laboratory Scientists also known as the “disease detectives.”

These professionals generate accurate and reliable laboratory data needed to aid in diagnosis and treatment of a disease. “There is no accurate diagnosis without laboratory testing.” The services rendered by these committed professionals are very vital in quality healthcare delivery and that they continued to play a vital role in disease prevention, detection, surveillance and patient management in the country.

As a concerned citizen of this country, I urge the government to give these professionals the needed attention and support to make our health system a better one. Ghanaians deserve better and a health system without adequate and quality laboratory services is of no use to the patients and the citizens at large.

Also, more laboratories should be equipped to handle some special cases like the current COVID-19 to minimize the transportation of samples from one facility to the other for testing.

Finally, I urge fellow Ghanaians to join the campaign on the pandemic COVID-19 sensitization in order to increase awareness. Tell a friend to tell a friend, CORONAVIRUS is real. Be on guard.

  • Johnny Depp: Dispute over finger injury at centre of The Sun libel case

How Johnny Depp lost the top of his middle finger is proving key to a libel case he has brought against The Sun.

The actor is suing publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) over a 2018 article that alleged he was violent and abusive towards his ex-wife Amber Heard.

At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, the newspaper group said he sustained the injury during “an alcohol and drug-addled rage against Ms Heard” in 2015.

But he claims his finger was fractured when she threw a glass bottle at him.

The couple met in 2011, married in 2015 and settled their divorce out of court in 2017.

Ms Heard, who is giving evidence in support of The Sun, has accused her ex-husband of grabbing, shoving and strangling her while they were on holiday in Australia.

She claims he “severely injured his finger, cutting off the top” while he was smashing a telephone against a wall, according to NGN’s barrister Adam Wolanski QC.

But Mr Depp claims Ms Heard threw a glass bottle at him, which smashed and fractured his finger, before she put “a cigarette out on [Mr Depp’s] right cheek”.

Mr Wolanski said the accounts of what happened were “diametrically opposed” and claimed Mr Depp’s version of events was undermined by texts he later sent to his doctor.

Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder have provided written statements that express surprise and shock at seeing him characterised as violent.

According to Mr Wolanski, Ms Heard believes her ex-husband is “leaking evidence which he thinks supports his case into the press”.

It will be decided at another preliminary hearing on Friday whether the two-week trial will begin on Monday.

Neither Mr Depp nor Ms Heard attended Wednesday’s hearing.

  • NMC cautions media against making jokes about coronavirus disease

The National Media Commission (NMC) is warning the Ghanaian media against making jokes about the new coronavirus disease that is ravaging the world.

“While humour may have its place in reducing anxieties in moments of national stress, it also carries the risk of minimising the sense of urgency and possibly leading to complacency in public response,” the Commission noted.

Latest figures indicate 244,973 persons have contracted the viral disease which has killed 10,033 in three months, with 87,408 having recovered from it.

Ghana has recorded 11 cases as at Thursday, March 19, 2020 with zero deaths so far. Health officials say those infected are responding positively to the treatment.

The Ghanaian media have generally been praised for demonstrating commendable support for the national cause.

However, the Commission in an advisory on the coverage of the coronavirus pandemic observed that, in the legitimate attempt to reduce public anxiety and provide hope in this moment of disquiet, some media houses have resorted to making jokes about the disease.

It, therefore, called on media practitioners to ensure that “balance still remains our greatest professional virtue” in such a situation.

The Commission further advised media practitioners to rely on official sources for accurate information about the deadly disease.

  • GFA in a state of ‘coma’ as Elmina Sharks becomes the latest club to field an unqualified player

The growing crisis that has crippled the Ghana Football Association has heightened after a whistleblower revealed again on Friday that Elmina Sharks also fielded an unqualified player during a Premier League match against giants Hearts of Oak last month to bring the number of high-profile cases to four so far.

It has been revealed that striker Benjamin Bernard Boateng was ineligible to feature in the side’s 1-1 stalemate against the Phobians in Accra.

The club’s top scorer received his first caution against King Faisal on Match Day -6 on January 25, received his second caution against Medeama SC in Tarkwa on Match Day-10 on February 16.

He was also booked in the side’s 1-0 win over Ebusua Dwarfs in the derby at the Papa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium on Wednesday February 19 which means he was ineligible to feature against Hearts of Oak on match-Day-12.

The striker sat out in their FA Cup win over Swedru All Blacks on February 23 and returned to feature against the capital giants on March 1, 2020.

Hearts of Oak, Techiman Eleven Wonders have followed Medeama as clubs to have being caught in the web.

The integrity of the federation is on the line as it is required to implement its whistleblower laws to deduct the six points from the club over a contentious new law.

This is the fourth club to have been revealed to have played an unqualified player after Medeama were docked six points while Hearts of Oak, Wonders are facing the same sanction for the same offence.

By the new regulation of the federation, the GFA is bound by it’s own laws to implement the report of a whistleblower which means it must act on the report to deduct Eleven Wonders SIX POINTS for fielding an unqualified player.

This is another massive test case for the Ghana FA after the association docked league leaders Medeama six points for the same offence in a protest filed by Great Olympics.

While Hearts may have not filed a protest against the the Elmina-based side, the Ghana FA is now faced with the difficult decision to knock off points from the Fearsome Sharks side following the revelation by the whistleblower as indicated by it’s own law.

The decision to award boardroom points to Great Olympics has ruffed feathers and sparked a wave of criticism, opening the FA up for widespread attacks.

Medeama have been docked six points for fielding an unqualified Nana Kofi Babil – who served his three match ban in the league after sitting out of the FA Cup tie against Karela United.

It’s now emerging several clubs are unaware of the law they claim was ‘smuggled’ in as the amended regulation was done by the Executive Council, setting the tone for long legal battles to further derail the league that has been halted by CoronaVirus.

The Ghana FA appears to have little choice to act against Elmina Sharks for a similar infraction of the law. Failure to do so will show that favouritism is the order of the day.

This situation is likely to throw the season into further chaos with a litany of legal battles looming.

While Article 23(5) A & 25 (1) of the GFA statutes accords congress with the supreme and legislative authority and power, it appears Article 39(K) of the amended statutes has vested parallel legislative authority on the Executive Council – a situation which has divided opinions in the West African nation.

The new article appears to be a clear departure and a practice in contradiction to the status quo.

Critics says the new stipulation appears to elevate the Executive Council to the level of congress for no apparent reason as many football aficionados have vowed to ensure the authority of congress is jealously guarded.

  • WHO head tells Africa to ‘wake up’ to coronavirus threat

Africa must “wake up” to the coronavirus threat and prepare for the worst, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

The continent should learn from how the spread of virus has sped up elsewhere, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

He warned that while Africa’s confirmed cases were currently low – around 640 – there was no reason for complacency.

“Africa should wake up, my continent should wake up,” said the Ethiopian, the WHO’s first African head.

Health experts warn that strained public health systems in Africa could become quickly overwhelmed if the virus takes hold, especially in overcrowded urban areas.

“WHO’s recommendation is actually mass gatherings should be avoided and we should do all we can to cut it from the bud, expecting that the worst could happen,” Mr Tedros told a news conference in Geneva, where the WHO is based.

In Africa, 16 people have died from Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by coronavirus: six in Egypt, six in Algeria, two in Morocco, one in Sudan and one in Burkina Faso.

In South Africa, which has 116 cases, President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a state of disaster, restricting travel, closing schools, banning mass gatherings and ordering bars to close or limit numbers to 50.

The country has also banned all cruise ships from its ports. This comes despite tests coming back negative for six people on board a cruise ship, which had been put under quarantine. All 1,700 people are now free to leave the ship and return home.

Anyone breaking South Africa’s coronavirus measures will be subject to a fine, or even imprisonment.
