  • Coronavirus birthplace Wuhan reports zero new infections for first time

The central Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the country’s coronavirus outbreak, reported no new infections for the first time, while imported cases surged by a record, led by new infections in the capital of Beijing.

The new imported infections also accounted for all of the new confirmed cases in mainland China, placing more pressure on authorities to screen travellers at key travel hubs.

Mainland China had 34 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, the country’s National Health Commission said, more than doubling from 13 cases a day earlier.

Of the 34 imported infections, Beijing accounted for 21 cases, a daily record for the city.

That brings the total number of confirmed cases in mainland China so far to 80,928, the health authority said in a statement on Thursday.

The death toll from the outbreak in mainland China had reached 3,245 as of the end of Wednesday, up by eight from the previous day.

In the central province of Hubei, there were eight new deaths, with the provincial capital of Wuhan accounting for six of the fatalities.

  • India political activist arrested for selling cow urine to combat virus

An activist with India’s ruling party has been arrested after a volunteer fell ill from drinking cow urine at a party to combat the novel coronavirus, police said Wednesday, as interest grows in home remedies amid the pandemic.

Narayan Chatterjee, a Bharatiya Janata Party activist, was arrested by West Bengal state police late Tuesday for “organising the cow urine consumption event and compelling a civic volunteer to drink cow urine”, Kolkata police chief Anuj Sharma told AFP.

“The civic volunteer fell sick on Tuesday and lodged a complaint with the police. The BJP activist was arrested on Tuesday night.”

The president of BJP’s West Bengal branch told AFP Chatterjee’s arrest was “unfortunate”.

“India is a democratic country. Everyone has the right to express his opinion,” Dilip Ghosh said.

“It’s unfortunate that Chatterjee was arrested for expressing his opinion organising the event. We don’t know if the civic volunteer was forced to drink cow urine.”

Many in the Hindu-majority nation of 1.3 billion consider cows sacred and believe drinking cow urine is a panacea for all manner of ailments, from arthritis and asthma to cancer and diabetes.

Last week, dozens of Hindu activists held a cow urine party in the capital New Delhi where they staged fire rituals and drank urine from earthen cups in order to fight the COVID-19.

Critics have rejected the urine claims as quackery.

A milk trader in the same state was arrested Tuesday for selling cow urine and dung and claiming they “would keep the novel coronavirus at bay”, senior police officer from Hooghly district Humayan Kabir told AFP.

Kabir said the trader, Sheikh Masud, was selling cow urine at 500 Indian rupees ($6.69) a litre and cow dung at 400 rupees a kilogramme (2.2 pounds).

Masud, who hung a poster at his shop with the words “Drink cow urine to ward off coronavirus” told police he was inspired to sell the excrement after hearing about the Delhi party.

AFP has sought comment from the Ministry of Health on whether cow dung and cow urine are effective in curing COVID-19.

The World Health Organisation in India has also been contacted for comment over the urine and dung claims.

The government said Wednesday there have been 151 positive cases and three deaths from the virus in India, the world’s second-most populous country with 1.3 billion people.

Most schools, entertainment facilities including cinemas, and even the iconic Taj Mahal have already been closed in India to try and stop the spread of the outbreak.

  • Raphael Dwamena starts gym work after undergoing a successful heart surgery

Ghana and Real Zaragoza striker Raphael Dwamena has started gym work after undergoing a successful heart surgery with doctors taking extreme measures aimed at preventing a future attack, GHANAsoccernet can exclusively report.

A device known as Implantable Automatic Defibrillator or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) has been implanted in his heart to protect the player from a sudden heart attack.

The device has been implanted for the treatment of life-threatening arrhythmias and prevention of sudden death while playing the game.

Dwamena, 24, has been working in the gym under the guidance trainer Javier Chocarro and the recuperator Andrés Ubieto.

The Ghana international is under a 24-hour medical surveillance as he battles to get his career back on track.

The 24-year-old was ruled out of action indefinitely after being diagnosed with a pulmonary condition last year October and underwent a successful operation at the Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza.

The condition causes an irregular and fast heart rate and can result in dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness.

GHANAsoccernet.com exclusively reported that the Ghana international is considering going under the knife to get his footballing career back on track.

It is the second major health scare that Dwamena has suffered in his professional career.

It will be recalled that in August 2017, his then club FC Zürich had agreed a £10 million fee with English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of Dwamena.

He was set to join Brighton subject to passing a medical, obtaining a work permit and international clearance, however, the deal couldn’t go through after Dwamena reportedly failed his medical due to a heart condition. He instead, remained an FC Zürich player.

At the time, FC Zürich maintained that the deviation detected “has been judged as being neither harmful to his health nor compromising the performance of a top athlete”.

He later joined La Liga side Levante UD in August 2018 before he was loaned out to Zaragoza for one year in July last year.

Dwamena has a €800,000 annual contract with UD Levante which will expire in 2022.

  • Massive Bangladesh coronavirus prayer gathering sparks outcry

A massive coronavirus prayer session with tens of thousands of devotees sparked an outcry in Bangladesh Wednesday as the South Asian nation reported its first death from the global pandemic.

Local police chief Tota Miah said some 10,000 Muslims gathered in an open field in Raipur town in southern Bangladesh to pray “healing verses” from the Koran to rid the country of the deadly virus.

“They held the Khatme Shifa prayers after dawn to free the country from the coronavirus,” Miah told AFP.

Organisers claimed the number of worshippers was 25,000.

He said organisers did not get permission from authorities to hold the session.

Photos of the gathering was widely shared on social media, with commenters slamming the massive rally.

Authorities have already shut schools and asked locals to avoid large gatherings in an effort to halt the spread of the disease.

“Unbelievable how they even have done it without notifying the police? They will be held responsible if anything happens to the people in the region,” Abdur Rahman wrote on Facebook.

Despite the appeal from authorities to avoid crowded public areas, many took the opportunity to head to tourism sites.

Police said they had to close two beaches, including one at Cox’s Bazar, the main resort district of the country, and which is home to nearly one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

A senior leader from the ruling Awami League, Obaidul Quader, said a lockdown might be required to contain the virus.

“If necessary, Bangladesh will be shut down. It’ll be enforced where necessary. People must be saved first. We’ll do everything for that,” he told reporters.

The number of positive cases in the country of 168 million people stands at 14, although some medical experts fear not enough tests were being conducted.

  • US Senate approves $105B virus aid bill, sends to Trump

The Senate overwhelmingly passed Wednesday a sweeping bill from the House of Representatives to provide billions of dollars in emergency aid as the U.S. and Americans combat the spread of the new coronavirus.

The Senate’s 90-8 vote on the Families First Coronavirus Response Act sends the package to Trump, who is expected to quickly sign off on the measure.

It includes free COVID-19 testing, paid family and sick leave for many Americans who otherwise lack the benefit. It applies to employees who work for companies who have between 50 and 500 employees. Companies below the lower employee threshold can apply for a waiver.

The Joint Committee on Taxation pegged the estimated cost of the package at $105 billion.

Ahead of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced his support, but called the Democratic measure imperfect, and said it has “real shortcomings,” including the gaps in sick leave coverage and potential financial impacts on small businesses.

“I will vote to pass their bill,” McConnell said. “This is a time for urgent bipartisan action, and in this case I do not believe we should let perfection be the enemy of even a subset of workers.

The Senate meanwhile is working on a separate package in tandem with the White House that would include sending funds directly to Americans, as well as other stimulus measures as fears of a recession caused by the outbreak persist.

The stock market has heavily cratered in past weeks as the virus has spread in the U.S. with all three major indices down significantly from their February highs.

Senate Republicans want a vote on that package by next week.

  • Trump invoking war powers to combat virus outbreak

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is activating a war-time law that allows him to more directly mandate the production of the private sector as the U.S. seeks to combat the spread of the new coronavirus.

Trump said he will “be invoking” the Defense Production Act, a 1950 war powers act originally signed into effect at the onset of the Korean War, “in case we need it.”

It gives the president broad authorities to direct private firms to produce certain goods needed for the national defense in an effort to increase the necessity of producing goods that are urgently needed.

The U.S. is currently facing a shortage of badly-needed medical equipment, including ventilators, respirators and hospital masks, as it seeks to stymy the spread of COVID-19.

The president said he would be signing the act shortly after he briefed reporters during a press conference, saying it is “prepared to go.” But the White House has yet to officially say he has taken the action.

The U.S. and Canada earlier Wednesday announced the closure of their mutual border, which 200,000 people cross daily, to “non-essential travel.” The transit of commercial goods, however, has not been impeded as the global economy grapples with the economic shocks being caused by the ongoing pandemic.

Trump declared a national emergency last Friday under the Stafford Act to allow the federal government to more easily share resources with state and local governments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The president’s newest effort comes as the number of coronavirus infections worldwide has surpassed 212,000, including over 8,000 deaths, according to a tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

That includes over 7,300 cases in the U.S. where 115 deaths have been counted.

  • Dispute over finger injury at centre of The Sun libel case

How Johnny Depp lost the top of his middle finger is proving key to a libel case he has brought against The Sun.

The actor is suing publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) over a 2018 article that alleged he was violent and abusive towards his ex-wife Amber Heard.

At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, the newspaper group said he sustained the injury during “an alcohol and drug-addled rage against Ms Heard” in 2015.

But he claims his finger was fractured when she threw a glass bottle at him.

The couple met in 2011, married in 2015 and settled their divorce out of court in 2017.

Ms Heard, who is giving evidence in support of The Sun, has accused her ex-husband of grabbing, shoving and strangling her while they were on holiday in Australia.

She claims he “severely injured his finger, cutting off the top” while he was smashing a telephone against a wall, according to NGN’s barrister Adam Wolanski QC.

But Mr Depp claims Ms Heard threw a glass bottle at him, which smashed and fractured his finger, before she put “a cigarette out on [Mr Depp’s] right cheek”.

Mr Wolanski said the accounts of what happened were “diametrically opposed” and claimed Mr Depp’s version of events was undermined by texts he later sent to his doctor.

Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder have provided written statements that express surprise and shock at seeing him characterised as violent.

According to Mr Wolanski, Ms Heard believes her ex-husband is “leaking evidence which he thinks supports his case into the press”.

It will be decided at another preliminary hearing on Friday whether the two-week trial will begin on Monday.

Neither Mr Depp nor Ms Heard attended Wednesday’s hearing.

According to statistics from the Jupiler Pro League, the defensive midfielder has a passing accuracy of 86.79 % and makes at least 50 passes per game.

In the survey conducted on only midfielders in the Belgian league, a list of players who have played more than fifteen games and made over 30 passes per match were selected for analysis.

Asamoah is enjoying a good campaign this season and made the headlines after netting a hat-trick in the game against KAS Eupen. A game that saw the Ghanaian red carded for displaying ‘Jesus loves you’ beneath his jersey.

Often underestimated, Asamoah has been Sint-Triuden’s most reliable player since joining the club in 2017. He has made 27 appearances this season and has four goals to his name.

  • Thieves invade Parliament to steal hand sanitizers

In a rather bizarre circumstance, hand sanitizers placed at vantage points at the precincts of Parliament to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) are being drained at a very alarming rate by some unsuspecting workers, thereby, denying others from accessing the product.

This unethical act, according to the Leadership of Parliament, is done at a time when the House has suspended sitting and there is virtually nobody in sight.

At a sitting on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is worried about the development raised the issue and cautioned that anyone caught in the act will be severely sanctioned.

“Mr. Speaker, we are procuring the hand sanitizers and placing them at vantage positions. What we have realized is that a few individuals are draining the hand sanitizers and taking them elsewhere which is very serious. Mr. Speaker, we need to activate the CCTV and anybody who is caught in this, not only are we going to name and shame, but appropriate sanctions will be applied to that person. It cannot be that hand sanitizers are placed at vantage positions and overnight we come and then everything is gone”, he cautioned.

The hand sanitizers placed at vantage points at the precincts of Parliament are part of measures put in place by the Leadership of the House to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The House has also in the interim, banned the public from observing Parliamentary sittings from the public gallery. They have also procured some digital infrared thermometer to check the temperature of workers and Members of Parliament before allowing entry.

In view of the novel COVID-19 pandemic which is rapidly spreading across the world and urgently raising the need for global leaders to take extraordinary measures to contain its drastic threats, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) calls on all its members and supporters, as well as well-meaning Ghanaians (Christians, Muslims and all other Faiths), to seek the face of God Almighty our only and forever reliable hope.

The NDC fully supports the need for every person in Ghana to strictly observe the precautionary measures and directives outlined by the mandated health regulatory bodies and the government in our collective effort to eliminate this debilitating disease which currently has no known cure.

Even though the stringent but necessary measures being implemented not only in Ghana, but by various governments across the world grossly affect our usual ways of life, especially our gathering and fellowship in the house of God, it does not and should not affect our relationship with our Maker in any way in seeking His divine intervention in this undesirable situation.

The holy scripture says in 2 Chronicles 7:14 that, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land”, our faithful God is ever ready to help us in our needs.

Deuteronomy 4:7 says, “For what nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him?” Those who know Him will always call on Him.

It is obvious that the world is not in normal times, as this monstrous disease threatens our very existence. Turning to our Maker at this point is therefore non-negotiable.

  • COVID-19: I never endorsed the use of alcohol Chief Imam

The office of the National Chief Imam of Ghana has brushed aside reports suggesting the office had endorsed the consumption of alcohol as means of fighting coronavirus.

In a statement signed by the Spokesman for the Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, the office said the assertion by the Chief Imam that Muslims could take alcohol under exceptional circumstances was not meant to encourage Muslims to patronize alcohol, and therefore, must be disregarded.

Consequently, the statement urged the public to treat the report with all the contempt it deserves.

    Press Release

The office of the National Chief Imam of Ghana has noticed with concern a misleading report associating the National Chief Imam with a statement to the effect that “muslims can take alcohol to fight the Coronavirus.

We would like to state without any equivocation that the National Chief Imam never made such statement.

In an attempt to educate public about the flexible features of the Islamic law it was indicated that under certain circumstances what prohibited may become permissible. That was to justify within law the suspension of the daily jama’a salat and the Friday Jumua salat.

This illustration has mischievously been taken out of context by some media house thereby whereby misinforming the public and subjecting the National Chief Imam to public opprobrium.

We call on the general public to disregard that report with all the contempt it deserves.

  • Ghana Card registration ongoing without protective gears [PICTURES]

It has emerged that workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) who are registering Ghanaians in the ongoing mass registration for Ghana Card in the Eastern Region are doing so without any of the prescribed protective gears meant to fight the spread of the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19.)

Graphic Online on Monday observed that it was only workers of Identity Management Systems Limited, the NIA’s private partner in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) joint venture for delivering the National Identification System project were working with protective gears.

NIA staff were rather not seen wearing protective gears.

“It will amaze you that IMS which happens to be the private firm that NIA is collaboratively working with, in this project made provisions for all its workers for about 2 weeks ago but for the past two weeks when you walk into even the Head Office, you will be seeing two groups of workers, those with the protective mask and gloves and those without. Those with it are workers of IMS those without are for NIA,” a staff told Graphic Online.

The source noted that presently the registration exercise was ongoing in Nkawkaw and Akwatia in the Eastern region without the necessary protective measures to help curb the spread of the virus.

  • Coronavirus: Ghana refuses entry to 31 passengers

Ghana has denied entry to 31 passengers who tried to enter the country after the government announced new measures on travel restrictions to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The 31 travellers from across the world are the first victims of the restrictions that took effect on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 1 pm.

This was made known by Mr Laud Ofori Afrifa, a Deputy Comptroller General in charge of Operations and Command Posts at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at a press briefing on Coronavirus on Wednesday evening.

Ghana earlier this week issued travel advisory and restrictions to help curtail the spread of Coronavirus.

The travel restrictions kicked in on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at 1 pm.

Mr Lord Ofori Afrifa explained at the press briefing that the Ghana Immigration Service after the directive kicked in was only admitting “foreigners coming back or returning who have resident permits.

“And even that, their details are being taken and being shared with the Ghana Health Service Response team,” he said.

He said on March 16, two Italians who were aboard an Air France flight were refused entry into Ghana.

“Infact we did not allow them to disembark because we normally have the travel advice from the airlines and we screen it and see who is on board before they come. So the two Italians were noted on the Air France flight and a joint team [GIS and Port Health Authority] went on board and explained situation to them and they were not allowed to disembark issues to them.

“Yesterday, 17th of March 24 Chinese were refused entry and also one German, also under the same circumstances… This morning [Wednesday], there is an incident at Abidjan, the airport is closed because of an incident on the tarmac so flights were being diverted into Ghana. In consultation with the Civil Aviation, all those flights were refused landing and sent back. One Ethiopian Airline flight had landed without permission, the passengers were not allowed to disembark, refuelled and they continued on their journey.”

Mr Afrifa said the flight statistics that they have indicates that there has been a drop in passenger inflow especially on the major airlines so for yesterday for instance, British Airways which normally brings in about 350 passengers brought in 140.

KLM, which could bring in about 450 brought in 128. Air Portugal which will normally bring in about 150 brought in 12. Kenyan Airways which will normally bring in about 120 brought in 66. Emirate Airlines which will normally bring in 380 bought in 174.

He said as of Wednesday morning the figures from especially Kenyan Airways, Emirates and South African Airways brought in reduced numbers. Kenyan Airways for example brought in 26 passengers, Emirate bought in 93, South Airways from Washington which will normally come in with about 300 passengers brought in 26 and most of these are Ghanaians. Ethiopian Airlines brought in 128 as against 250 which is the average.

  • Bank of Ghana cuts policy rate by 150 points over Coronavirus [COVID-19]

The Bank of Ghana has reduced its benchmark policy rate by 150 basis points as its first response to the strain that the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is imposing on the economy.

The policy rate determines the rate at which commercial banks determine interest rates on loans.

With this cut, it is expected that interest rates on commercial loans will also drop.

The bank reduced the rate, which is the benchmark for inter bank lending, from 16 per cent to 14 per cent Wednesday [March 18, 2020].

The Governor of BoG and Chairman of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, Dr Ernest Addison, announced this in a statement issued Wednesday [March 18, 2020].

The statement followed the conclusion of the 93rd MPC meeting which reviewed activities in the economy and the impact of global developments on the local front.

Unlike before when the committee’s meetings were followed by press conferences, the bank issued a statement in compliance with the directive to avoid social gatherings in the wake of the COVID-19 scourge.

The reduction in the rate is the first since November 2018 and is expected to combine with other factors to make cost of credit cheaper.

The BoG policy weight carries about 40 per cent weight in the computation of the Ghana Reference Rate, the base rate for banks lending.

Coming at a time when the central bank feared that the COVID-19 could collapse 2020 growth to five per cent or 2.5 per cent in the worst case scenario, the reduction in the rate could make funds cheaper for businesses to access and use to revitalize their operations.

It could also make funds available to consumers, thereby raising consumer purchases for growth to rebound.

    About Coronavirus

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

  • Those siphoning sanitisers in Parliament will be dealt with Kyei Mensah-Bonsu

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has expressed concern about some individuals siphoning sanitisers distributed in Parliament.

The Majority Leader wants CCTV cameras in the facility activated so those engaged in these acts can be found and dealt with.

Sanitiser stands were mounted across the house last week as part of measures to protect MPs and staff from Coronavirus.

Speaking on the Floor, the majority leader said some of the sanitiser stands become empty about an hour after they are filled which he says is unacceptable.

“What we are beginning to notice is that a few individuals are draining the sanitizers and taking them away, which is very serious. We need to activate the CCTVs so anybody who is caught in this is not only named and shamed, but appropriate sanctions will be applied to that person,” he told the house as other MPs laughed in the background.

“It cannot be that sanitizers are placed at vantage positions and overnight, everything is gone. Even whilst members are sitting, you step out, where you saw a sanitiser where it was almost full, then everything is gone. It cannot happen,” the majority leader added.

“So I am asking the marshals department and the clerk to activate the CCTV cameras. Anybody who is caught in such an act will be sanctioned,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, as a temporal measure, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the management of schools in the country to shut down effective Monday, March 16, 2020, until further notice.

The President gave the order when he addressed the nation on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

He said, “All universities, Senior High Schools and basic schools ie public and private schools, will be closed Monday, March 16, 2020, till further notice. The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, has been tasked to roll out distance learning programmes.”

The President added that “BECE and WASSCE candidates will be allowed to attend school to prepare for their examinations but with prescribed social distancing protocols.”

President Akufo-Addo as part of his address put a ban on all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, and church activities and related events as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

He said the ban will be in force for the next four weeks.

Travellers from ten different countries seeking to enter Ghana were turned away yesterday at the Kotoka International Airport.

  • Coronavirus: Elubo GPRTU branch ensures passengers wash hands before joining cars

As part of measures to calm the spread of the world deadly Coronavirus in Ghana, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) branch at Elubo in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, is ensuring travellers at the station wash their hands with alcoholic-based sanitizers and liquid soaps before they board cars.

This move is in a quick response to the directive given out by the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to all lorry stations in the country to practice personal hygiene in a way to avoid contracting and spreading the Coronavirus.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent Daniel Kaku, the Branch Chairman of Elubo GPRTU, Mr. Kofi Assuah said they have no option than to adhere to the President’s directive to ensure passengers do not contract and spread the virus.

He said since Elubo is a border town the virus could easily spread hence their measures put in place to fight against the virus.

He emphasized that they had installed washing dispenser at the station for the passengers to use, adding that “when they finish washing their hands with the water they use liquid soaps and hand sanitizers to clean their hands thoroughly”.

He also said they provide each passenger with a nose mask.

Mr. Assuah who is also the District Chairman for the three Nzema GPRTU said apart from the aforementioned items, regular education has been given to the passengers about the virus.

“We always advise them to minimize conversation in the cars and also use tissues whenever they want to cough or sneeze”, he said.

Some of the passengers who spoke to our Correspondent commended the Elubo GPRTU branch for the measures putting in place to combat the killer virus.

They said the move would help them not to contract and spread the virus.

“I came from Asante Akyem to do something in Elubo and this morning I have come here to take a car to Kumasi and when I got here I saw the GPRTU has put measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus and in fact I was allowed to wash my hands before joining the car, they gave me a liquid soap and hand sanitizer and also tissue to clean my hands, I have to commend them, they have done well and I think this will help us not to contract the virus”, one passenger gave the testimony to our Correspondent.

Elubo is the main border post between Ghana and La Cote D’Ivoire. It is also a cosmopolitan town dotted with different towns apart from Nzemas.

Ghana has so far recorded seven of the deadly Coronavirus and these cases are imported cases.

  • Malawi compensates Mozambique for stolen charcoal

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a national disaster over coronavirus even as the country is yet to confirm any case.

Mr Mnangagwa has also postponed independence day celebrations scheduled for 18 April and banned all public gatherings of more than 100 people.

The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) that was to take place in the south-western city of Bulawayo from 21-25 April has also been postponed.

The ban will affect church gatherings, weddings and sporting events for 60 days.

The president told a press briefing at his office in the capital, Harare, there would be no travel ban, but discouraged travellers from countries that had confirmed coronavirus cases from visiting Zimbabwe.

He also advised Zimbabweans against travel abroad until the pandemic was under control.

  • Coronavirus – How close are we to treatment and vaccine?

The new coronavirus, declared a pandemic on March 11 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) because of its global spread, and with more than 170,000 confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and more than 7,000 deaths. The WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus yesterday referred to it as “the defining global health crisis of our time” .

The vast majority of the world’s population is not immune to this new virus. No cure has been found yet. Thus, all the measures that accumulate are, for the time being, preventive, and drastic and unprecedented at the least. The objective is to avoid the rapid spread of the virus through total containment measures.

The African continent is not being spared. The South African government declared a State of National Disaster and closed its borders, as well as all its schools. All gatherings of more than 100 people are prohibited in South Africa, while Ghana banned “cluster gatherings” of all kinds. In Senegal, the fourth most affected African country after Egypt, South Africa and Algeria, all public events are banned for 30 days. Ethiopia’s government closed all the schools for 15 days.

Italy and Spain are the two most affected European countries. And now France announced accelerated measures. The European Union has also announced the closure of its borders.

One of WHO’s urgent aims was to prevent the virus from reaching countries with the weakest health systems. A challenge which is compromised given the number of African countries that are currently affected (27 to date).

    The race to the vaccine

Though preventive measures are effectively put in place over the days, laboratories around the world are working to find treatments as well as a vaccine.

In fact, a certain number of treatments have proven efficient in the laboratory. They now need to be tested on human beings who have contracted the new coronavirus. It would take one to three months to provide the treatments once their efficacy is proven. In the United States, Vice President Mike Pence announced that treatment may be available “by summer or early fall”. As for the vaccine, the time frame is longer; between 12 and 18 months, according to scientists.

Institut Pasteur in France is working on a vaccine to be derived from the one for measles. The German biotechnology group BioNTech has announced plans to start testing patients as from end of April.

Mologic Ltd in the UK also announced that it has been awarded about £1 million as part of the British government’s £46 million international coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention and research funding package. The funding will be used by Mologic and global partners, to develop a point-of-need diagnostic test for the virus, and build on their experience with the rapid test kit for Ebola.

This will allow health officials to test for the virus at home or in the community, providing results in 10 minutes, without the need for electricity or a laboratory. And with their work on diagnostics, UK aid is also supporting Mologic in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The company is working in close partnership with the Institut Pasteur de Dakar to validate and manufacture the COVID-19 test at a new manufacturing site, DiaTropix, in Senegal.

The Canadian bio-pharmaceutical company Medicago has announced significant progress in the development of a vaccine. The company is partly owned by Philip Morris International, which aims to diversify its business activities according to the framework of its new vision based on science, technology and innovation. Philip Morris International (PMI) purchased shares in Medicago in 2013 and currently holds approximately 30% of the company’s shares. The majority of the company’s remaining shares are held by Mitsubishi Tanade Pharma.

Medicago’s research works are based on tobacco plants unlike most research which is based on egg-based vaccines. The antibody is still at the research and development phase, and Medicago said it hopes to be able to make tests on patients by summer 2020.

As for international biopharmaceutical companies, such as Sanofi and Janssen, they are collaborating with the American Advanced Biomedical Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in order to develop vaccines at the preclinical stage. The German company BioNTech, which currently works on the development of a number of vaccines for cancer and flu, also partnered with the American pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, in order to develop a vaccine.

Charitable associations also joined the race to the vaccine. The British organization, The Wellcome Trust, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Mastercard launched a €110 million offer to accelerate the marketing of COVID-19 treatments which currently are in the preclinical stage.

It is true that the biotechnology industry around the world plays an essential role in the fight against COVID-19 in terms of research and development of the vaccine, as well as in the discovery of therapeutic drugs. However, all the vaccines developed so far are currently under pre-clinical testing and will not be available for several months at least.

  • Coronavirus: Noguchi has capacity to test 1000 cases a day, but only 166 samples tested since outbreak

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has so far tested 166 samples of suspected cases of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana since the outbreak.

This, according to Noguchi was far below its capacity and therefore dismissed assertions in some quarters that it was being inundated with cases it cannot handle.

As of Tuesday, March 17, 2020, seven cases had tested positive for the disease in Ghana.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Noguchi denied assertions that it did not have the capacity to test the number of cases it was being inundated with.

Noguchi explained that it has the capacity to test 800 cases (200 x 4) in a day and can even do 1000 tests in a day.

“Since COVID-19 started, as at yesterday afternoon [March 17, 2020], we had tested only 166 samples. So this is far, far below our capacity. So if anybody says that …it is not true at all,” the Director of Noguchi said in a radio interview with Accra based Citi FM.

  • How Alassane Ouattara has stunned West Africa by deciding to give up on presidency

Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara has stunned his critics by announcing that he will not run for a third term, putting pressure on other regional leaders to follow his example, writes the BBC Newsday’s James Copnall from the main city, Abidjan.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: an African politician comes to power, likes his time in office, and changes the constitution to run again.

This story has an unusual ending though – and one that has led to both applause and consternation in West Africa and further afield.

Earlier this month, Alassane Ouattara, 78, formally announced that he would not run for a controversial third term as president of cocoa-rich Ivory Coast, even though a recently modified constitution appeared to allow him that possibility.

There were gasps from the politicians who had gathered to hear him speak in the capital Yamoussoukro – and perhaps even louder sounds from the vicinity of the presidential palace in neighbouring Guinea.

    ‘Lesson in democracy’

For months opposition politicians in Guinea have been insisting that President Alpha Condé, 82, is intent on using any means he can to extend his stay in power.

There have been huge protests – and even deaths – in several places in Guinea over the issue, and Mr Condé is attempting to organise a referendum which would allow him to run again, even though he is in what is currently his second and final term.

According to one person who was in the room in Yamoussoukro, a Guinean minister telephoned an Ivorian counterpart just after Mr Ouattara made his announcement to express his dismay at the impact it might have on Mr Condé’s attempt to remain in office in Guinea.

    Others were happier, of course.

The Guinean opposition politician Sidya Touré, who used to work with Mr Ouattara, expressed his approval.

He called the decision a “lesson in democracy”, saying Mr Ouattara would be remembered for it, and added that he hoped “others would be inspired by it for the good of the region”.

There can be no doubt he was thinking of Mr Condé.

It would be interesting to know what former Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaoré makes of it all.

He now lives in exile in Ivory Coast’s commercial capital, Abidjan, in a house not far from Mr Ouattara’s.

He was forced from power in 2014 by popular protests, after he tried to get the constitution changed to stay in office.

Mr Ouattara’s decision was surely motivated by a desire to leave on a high note, applauded around the world as a democrat – rather than condemned as a man who outstayed his welcome, like his guest Mr Compaoré.

    ‘Wounds have not healed’
Mr Ouattara’s announcement even drew praise from Ivorian opposition leaders.

Pascal Affi N’Guessan, a former prime minister and a key opposition figure, told the BBC he had to applaud the decision, saying it was a positive step for democracy in Ivory Coast.

Other opponents, including the man reported to be the richest in Ivory Coast, Jean-Louis Billon, made similar statements.

That does not stop them criticising the president’s time in power, of course.

Mr Ouattara’s supporters say he brought economic growth, stability and a renewed standing for Ivory Coast on the international stage.

“I think he has been a good president,” said Venance Konan, the veteran journalist who runs the state newspaper, Fraternité Matin.

“He came to power after a very difficult period, after a war. After nine years he has succeeded in rebuilding this country,” he added.

But opposition politicians – and many Ivorians – say that the president has not done enough to bring the nation together, and heal the wounds of the bitter conflict that divided Ivory Coast, and then brought him to power.

    ‘Hoping for fresh blood’

Around 3,000 people are thought to have died in the war sparked by Laurent Gbagbo’s refusal to accept he had lost the 2010 elections to Mr Ouattara, before troops loyal to the current president arrested Mr Gbagbo in April 2011 and handed him over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to stand trial for crimes against humanity.

Mr Gbagbo was acquitted but the prosecution is considering appealing against the ruling.

The tactics used by Mr Ouattara’s supporters during his time in power have been criticised too.

For example, Mr Billon – who used to be close to Mr Ouattara – said that when he broke with the president and his team, his businesses were audited for months in an attempt to intimidate him.

So, was he a democrat who developed the country, or a man who failed to bring the country together?

Ivorians will have a chance to show which view of Mr Ouattara’s legacy they agree with in the elections in October.

He and his political movement are backing his Prime Minister, Amadou Gon Coulibaly, as their candidate.

  • EU shuts borders as virus deaths exceed Asia toll

The European Union sealed off its borders Wednesday to try to put the brakes on the ferocious spread of the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of deaths on the continent soared past the toll in Asia.

Millions of people are on strict lockdown in Europe, now the epicentre of COVID-19 with more than 3,400 deaths now recorded, according to an AFP tally.

The United States and Britain led a multi-billion-dollar global fightback against the economic havoc unleashed by COVID-19 but financial markets were unimpressed, with Asian and European stocks plunging further.

Governments across the world have imposed draconian measures to try to slow the pace of infections, confining people to their homes, closing shops, restaurants and schools, dramatically changing life as we know it.

The coronavirus outbreak, which first emerged in China late last year, has quickly marched across the globe, infecting nearly 200,000 people and killing almost 7,900.

Europe has now recorded 3,421 deaths — including 2,503 in Italy — leapfrogging Asia with 3,384, according to an AFP tally at 1100 GMT.

As the spectre of a deep global recession looms large, London and Washington Tuesday announced massive economic stimulus packages after coming under fire over their response to the crisis.

US President Donald Trump said the White House was discussing a “substantial” spending bill with Congress that would include immediate cash payments to Americans.

Officials did not give hard numbers but The Washington Post reported the amount could reach $850 billion, with a chunk destined for airlines fearing ruin.

“We’re going big,” Trump told reporters.

British finance minister Rishi Sunak unveiled an “unprecedented package” of government-backed loans worth 330 billion pounds ($400 billion) for businesses struggling in the sudden economic paralysis caused by mass self-quarantine.

Similar measures have been introduced by France and Germany, the two leading members of the 27-member European Union.

EU leaders decided Tuesday to impose an entry ban on travellers from outside the bloc for 30 days, the most significant emergency measure from Brussels, which has struggled to develop a unified response.

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told Germany’s Bild newspaper that politicians had initially underestimated the virus threat.

“But now it is clear that this is a virus that will keep us busy for a long time yet,” she said. “We understand that measures that seemed drastic two or three weeks ago, need to be taken now.”

The World Health Organization has called for every suspected coronavirus case to be tested and says Europe needs to take the “boldest actions” against the disease.

Drugmakers are scrambling for a breakthrough, and it could still take more than a year before a safe vaccine is ready to market. US officials have said the first human trial for a possible vaccine has begun.

In the United States, restrictions continued to build, with Maryland becoming the latest state to delay presidential election primaries and New York City considering curfews.

Australia’s government urged citizens to not travel abroad and banned gatherings of more than 100 people as cases topped 500.

Asian hotspots China and South Korea have seen new infections and deaths level out in recent weeks — China reported just one new domestic case for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.

Africa, with its fragile healthcare systems, has also recorded more than 500 cases, and Burkina Faso reported the first confirmed death in sub-Saharan Africa.

Latin America has more than 1,100 recorded infections, with the continent’s most populated country Brazil announcing its first fatality.

    – ‘Invisible enemy’ –

Trump, who for weeks has been accused of playing down the crisis, appeared determined to take control of his messaging, declaring he would do everything to fight an “invisible enemy”.

“We have to win this war,” he said at the White House, where staff and journalists now have to undergo regular temperature checks.

Battered US stocks — which Trump considers a key metric of his success ahead of the November presidential election — closed higher after the stimulus announcement.

But markets slumped again in Asia and Europe on Wednesday.

Trump had acknowledged on Monday that the economy might be sliding into recession.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron also likened the outbreak to war and ordered almost the entire population to stay at home for at least two weeks.

Britain stepped up its measures following scientific advice that infections and deaths would spiral without drastic action.

Usually joyful — and alcohol-fuelled — Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations were cancelled in Dublin, New York and Boston.

Anthony Whyte, 49, looked out onto the cobbled streets of Dublin from a bar and likened the scene to “a ghost town”.

    “It’s like armageddon,” he said.

G7 leaders have vowed to “do whatever it takes” to prevent a financial meltdown.

However, every sector from tourism to food to aviation is affected as the global economy effectively goes into shutdown.

Major world airlines have axed almost all flights temporarily, triggering pleas to help carriers survive.

The outbreak has also shredded the global sporting and cultural calendar.

In football, The European and Copa America championships have been postponed until next year, and the French Open tennis tournament has been delayed to the autumn.

The International Olympic Committee acknowledged there was no “ideal” solution, after some top athletes said they were being forced to take health risks should the summer extravaganza go ahead.

And the organisers of the annual Glastonbury music festival in England have cancelled this year’s 50th anniversary event.
