  • Coronavirus: Churches resort to mobile money, smart payments to take collection, tithe

It is obvious we are not in normal times with the heightened threat of the deadly coronavirus literally leaving everyone in the country in a pensive mood.

Aside that, it is unfathomable to realize that the utmost religious Ghanaian has been barred from attending church or going to the mosque for Friday or Saturday or Sunday service or any other day at least for the next four weeks.

With the threat of the COVID-19 leaving a lot of casualty and death in its wake elsewhere in the world and even on the continent.

Many Ghanaians have been stricken with fear and panic and it was the ideal time for churches to have enjoyed a boom in attendance as everyone would have sought refuge in church to try and pray it off but due to the government’s ban on public gathering, churches and mosque’s across the country have been closed at least for the next four weeks.

Some church leaders have been angered by the situation ostensibly because of the financial toll it will have on them as they can not take their usual ‘collection’, offertory and tithe.

Some of them have resorted to online church services through digital platforms such as Facebooklive, periscope and other video streaming sites.

But the big question is how will they take the cash as was asked by Prophet Kumchacha on Wednesday 18th March 2020.

Most churches have now resorted to mobile money and other smart payment platforms to receive their offertory and tithes as the government’s directive on no church service bites hard on churches at least for the next four weeks.

  • Teachers will struggle to use online platforms to teach kids at home – NAGRAT President

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Angel Carbonu says most teachers will find it difficult to conduct online education due to ‘illiteracy’ in IT.

President Akufo-Addo delivering an address on Covid-19 on March 15 said All Universities, Senior High Schools, and basic schools, i.e. public and private schools, will be closed Monday, 16th March 2020, till further notice. The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, has been tasked to roll out distance learning programmes,”

This directive has been followed duly but Mr Carbonu believes most teachers lack the requisite knowledge in the field of IT to use the online platforms to teach.

“I was at a meeting with the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and his officials. They indicated to me that a website has been developed where the subject areas will be placed there so that students can access them. Again there is a crisis in the nation and all of us will have to come together and find a solution, the Television stations need to get programmes that can educate the children at home.

“I can assure you that a lot of teachers will be challenged in the use of IT in teaching in this country. Even though I am the President of NAGRAT I will struggle, it is about time teachers come together and take this lesson serious”.

While schools have been shut, the President also put a ban on all public gatherings including conference, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies and church activities and related events as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

He said the ban will be in force for the next four weeks. Ghana has now recorded 11 cases of the deadly coronavirus.

  • Minority declines to support ‘Coronavirus’ Bill to restrict movement under certificate of urgency

The Minority in Parliament has declined to support the Imposition of Restrictions Bill, 2020 aimed at helping to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana under a certificate of urgency.

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Ms Gloria Afua Akuffo, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 laid the Imposition of Restrictions Bill, 2020 before Parliament.

The bill, which is to back President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directives on measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 in Ghana, is intended to provide a legislative framework, in consonance with the Constitution, for the imposition of restrictions as a quick and effective means of intervention to address emergencies.

However, the Minority in Parliament has indicated that they cannot support the Bill under a certificate of urgency.

The Graphic Online understands the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms Gloria Akuffo is in Parliament Thursday afternoon meeting the Constitutional and Legal Committee of  Parliament, praying that it should approve the Restrictions Bill to be considered under a certificate of urgency.

The Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a tweet said: “Unfortunately, the minority has declined to support the view that the bill be considered under a certificate of urgency.”

The Graphic Online’s reporter in Parliament, Nana Konadu Agyeman reported that the Minority’s argument was that the Bill was not an urgent one on the grounds that it failed to focus on measures that would be instituted to deal with the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana.

Contrary, it argued that the Bill was intended to give the President “overbroad powers” to restrict freedom of movement, freedom of speech and freedom of thought.

“So we cannot allow the Bill to override Chapter 5 of the Constitution because it is a general restriction of freedom in Ghana,” they said.

Addressing the press outside Parliament Thursday afternoon, the Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament, Dr Dominic Ayine said, “Not because we do not want the President to adopt measures to address the Coronavirus pandemic but let it be known to all Ghanaians that the Minority support the taking of measures that are narrowly-tailored in dealing with Coronavirus pandemic,” the Graphic Online’s Agyeman reported.

The Bill is intended to provide a legislative framework in consonance with the Constitution for the imposition of restrictions as a quick and effective means of intervention to address emergencies.

It is also to provide power to the President to impose restrictions on persons in the event of disaster, emergency or similar circumstance to ensure public safety and protection, as well as in the interest of defence, public health among others.

The Second Deputy Speaker, Mr Alban Bagbin, referred it to the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee for consideration and report to the House.

  • Coronavirus: Akufo-Addo must call NIA, EC to order – CHRAJ

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) wants President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to call the National Identification Authority (NIA) to order following its continuance of the mass Ghana Card registration exercise in the Eastern Region in the face of the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana.

CHRAJ similarly wants the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration.

A press statement signed by the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr Joseph Whittal, said the body was worried that in spite of the President’s directives on social gatherings and the existing WHO precautionary measures aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the NIA is relentlessly embarking on a registration exercise in the Eastern Region.

“…the Commission is of the considered view that the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee calls the NIA to order by suspending forthwith its ongoing registration exercise in the Eastern Region until the COVID-9 pandemic normalises,” the statement said.

“In the same vein, the Commission calls on the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration due to the danger or threat that any mass gathering arising from such an exercise can pose to the health and life of the people”.

The statement further stressed that the EC’s “posture and intransigence” would undermine WHO protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19 and violate the Constitution of Ghana.

    NIA

Acknowledging the recent mitigating measures taken by the Government aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the Commission said it was worried that the National Identification Authority (NIA) is carrying out a registration exercise in the Eastern Region.

“The Commission is however worried that in spite of the President’s directives and the existing WHO precautionary measures aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the National Identification Authority (NIA) is relentlessly embarking on a registration exercise in the Eastern Region,” the statement said.

“This has been exacerbated by reports in the media that the registration officials are poorly equipped with hand sanitisers, gloves and nose masks”.

The statement added that the NIA’s action is a clear violation of the right to health and ultimately the right to life as stipulated under Articles 34(2), 13(1) and 33(5) of the 1992 Constitution (Constitution) respectively, which are premised on Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Articles 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), Article 16 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

    EC

The EC statement further explained that the EC’s posture and intransigence would undermine the World Health Organization’s (WHO) protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19, urging the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk associated with the planned Voters’ Registration.

“Concerning the Electoral Commission (EC), the Commission’s attention has been drawn to a Press Statement dated 17th march, 2020 issued by Sylvia Annoh (Mrs), EC’s posture and intransigence would undermine WHO protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19 and capable of violating the above mentioned provisions of the Constitution, international and regional human rights instruments and the SDGs for which Ghana is a State Party and a signatory,” the statement said.

“In the same vein, the Commission calls on the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration due to the danger or threat that any mass gathering arising from such an exercise can pose to the health and life of the people.

“The Commission further recommends that Government as a matter of urgency provide protective gear and equipment to all hospitals and health facilities both private and public and to all health professionals directly handling Covid-19 suspected cases to mitigate the looming contagion in the protection of the rights to health and life of these professionals who are exposed to serious risks of contracting the deadly virus in the line of duty on a daily basis”.

  • Coronavirus: Ban on public gathering a plot to rig 2020 elections – Asiedu Nketia claims

While some Ghanaians have lauded the president’s directive on public gatherings due to the recent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the opposition party, National Democratic Congress thinks otherwise.

According to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC, the real intention of the ban on public gatherings by the president is to rig the 2020 elections.

“This whole announcement of emergency ban, emergency here, stopping this gathering, stopping that gathering, in my view, on the surface, it will appear to the world that the president is acting to deal with the COVID-19 and so on.

But the real intention is not to deal with COVID-19 at all. The real intention is to find space to put the pieces of the rigging equipments together. So that by the time anybody could say jack, the election has been compromised,” he said in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced some bold directives as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The President placed a ban on church-related activities, mosques prayers, and all other public gatherings exceeding 25 persons. That was during his second address to the nation on the Coronavirus update.

He also directed airlines to stop bringing in travellers from countries that have recorded over 200 cases of coronavirus effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Social media users are divided over the comments made by the NDC Secretary. According to some, politicizing such a deadly issue is below the belt and uncalled for.

“This man paaaa…..you still don’t have a clue on what has engulfed the world.? You’re thinking about the way to your stomach. When issues if life and death are being dealt with, you’re thinking about the election as if you have not enjoyed enough. Let’s be serious, Johnson Nketia,” one Dela Clinton wrote on Facebook.

Another user with the name Alppha Khristlyk also wrote “I do support the part that the registration must halt, but with the issue of election rigging being the rationale behind this emergency pronouncement? Oh, come on Mr Secretary, that cheap politics and propaganda.”

“How on earth can you politicize the issue on ground. Are you thinking at all? Or you think it’s all about you and NDC. Do you listen to yourself? Are you aware most hit countries have initiated self-quarantine measures by asking citizens to stay at home, companies have also instructed staff to work from home.? Please for once think about the well being of people that vote you guys into power,” Adebayor Kunah questioned.

Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCGI) in-charge of Command Post and Operations, Laud Kwesi Affrifah at a press briefing yesterday revealed that his outfit together with the Kotoka International Airport authorities refused about 200 foreign nationals entry into the country as part of measures to curb a spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.

“Over 200 people have been turned back. Only those with resident permits are being allowed in,” he said.

  • Coronavirus: UG Medical School backtracks on evacuation directive to Intl students

The University of Ghana Medical School has backtracked on an earlier ultimatum to International students to leave the country within 14 days amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, March 16, a communique was issued for all students to vacate the Korle Bu campus of the Medical School.

According to the communique, “students living in Accra and any other region of the country have been given up to Thursday to evacuate their hostels.

“International students have also been asked to book tickets to their home countries. They have been given a two (2) week period to finalize all travel arrangements.”

Some International students who spoke to Starrfm.com.gh on condition of anonymity said they would have preferred to stay in the country rather than go back to their countries where they stand a higher chance of contracting the coronavirus disease.

However, authorities of the University of Ghana have now given an opportunity for international students who wish to stay to remain at their hostels.

In an interview with Starrfm.com.gh, the President of the International Medical Students Association Ife Gemp declined to comment on the issue.

Ghana has so far recorded nine cases of the deadly COVID-19 disease.

The coronavirus pandemic has now infected more than 200,000 people around the globe after doubling in less than two weeks.

Between the start of the outbreak in December and March 7, there were 100,000 confirmed cases recorded.

But another 100,000 people have been infected in just 11 days since then, largely due to a surge in cases in Europe.

China, Italy, Iran, Spain and Germany have suffered the highest number of infections.

The John Hopkins University, which announced cases had surpassed the 200,000 mark, also recorded 8,006 deaths.

The current death toll suggests 4 per cent of patients who catch the virus die from it.

But experts say the death rate is probably lower than that because the true number of infections is much higher is far greater because some countries, including the UK, are only testing people hospitalised by the illness.

  • Beon-Tankoo residents appeal to govt to fix broken footbridge

The residents of Beon-Tankoo Electoral Area in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region have appealed to the government to fix a broken down footbridge on the Akanyonga River to facilitate the free movement of goods and services in the area.

Expressing the concern on behalf of the residents at a durbar of chiefs and people of Beon traditional area on Monday, the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Emmanuel Ayinpanga Akolgo, said the absence of the footbridge in the area had brought huge discomfort not only to the residents of Beon-Tankoo but to several adjoining communities in the district.

He said the footbridge collapsed in 2013 and the people of the area for the past seven years had been faced with difficulties in transporting themselves across the Akanyonga and other adjoining markets.

“Persistent appeals to the Bongo District Assembly and successive Members of Parliament (MPs) for the area to have the footbridge fixed have not yielded any positive results,” the Assemblyman claimed.

He said was what worsening the situation was that during the rainy season, “teachers and students are forced to stay out of school and most market women and other traders are unable to transport their goods to Akanyonga market, one of the biggest market centres in the Bongo District.”

He said the situation posed a challenge for the residents who lived across the collapsed footbridge to access healthcare.

“All activities in the area come to a halt whenever there is a downpour,” Mr Akolgo stressed.

According to the Assembly Member, the people of Beon-Tankoo were predominantly farmers, hence the urgent need for the government to fix the footbridge to help cart their farm produce to market centres.

He mentioned the uncompleted state of the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Tankoo as another major problem confronting the community and stated that the facility is expected to reach out to a population of more than 20,000 people in the area.

Mr Akolgo said the project was started in 2008 and several appeals to successive governments to complete it “is yet to receive the needed attention.”

He appealed to both the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Mr Peter Ayimbisa as well as the MP for Bongo, Mr Edward Bawa, to help complete work on the facility to address the health challenges of the residents, particularly maternal health-related cases.

  • India: Four gang-rapists to be hanged on Friday

Four men convicted of the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a New Delhi student will be executed on Friday, the victim’s lawyer said after a court dismissed a final last-minute petition to delay the hangings.

The brutal attack on Jyoti Singh aboard a city bus sparked nationwide demonstrations and shone a spotlight on the alarming rates of sexual violence in India.

A trial court in Delhi, which had already postponed the hangings three times, on Thursday dismissed another plea to delay the executions scheduled for 5:30 am (0000 GMT) Friday.

“The court rejected their petition and said they have exhausted all their legal rights. The hangings will take place on Friday at the scheduled time,” Singh’s lawyer Seema Kushwaha told reporters.

Singh’s mother Asha Devi welcomed the ruling and said her “daughter’s soul will finally rest in peace”.

The convicts had filed numerous petitions seeking delays to the executions.

One challenged the rejection of his mercy plea by the president, the last remedy available to death-row convicts in India.

The Supreme Court said it found no reason to interfere with the president’s decision and rejected his petition.

Thursday’s ruling came amid widespread support for the executions.

The media has also been full of grisly details about the hangings, including that the nooses will be smeared with banana and clarified butter to soften them.

Singh, 23, was returning home from the cinema in the evening with a friend when they boarded a bus, thinking it would take them home.

The five men and one juvenile knocked the friend unconscious and dragged Singh to the back of the bus and raped and tortured her with a metal rod.

The physiotherapy student and the friend were then dumped on the road. Singh died 13 days later in a Singapore hospital from massive internal injuries.

The suspected ringleader was found dead in his prison cell in a suspected suicide, while the 17-year-old juvenile spent three years in a detention centre.

Almost 400 people are on death row in India, but no one has been executed since 2015.

  • NIA implements social distancing at registration centres

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has implemented social distancing, one of the precautionary measures announced by the government to combat the spread of the Coronavirus in communities.

As part of measures to curb the spread of the virus, following confirmation of cases in Ghana, the government earlier in the week announced a ban on all large public gatherings.

Other precautionary measures announced by the government included social distancing in communities and other public places.

Some critics have questioned the continuous activities of the NIA, raising concerns that there are too many contacts at their registration centres for the Ghana card.

The NIA has now adopted the social distance measure, which leaves significant meters between people at registration centres to ensure there is no physical contact.

The social distancing measure taken by the NIA is both for people waiting to be served and those who are being served by staff of the NIA.

The adoption of the social distancing measure will also ensure that the required space advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is created between people to minimize the effect of a sudden cough or sneeze.

Social distancing has been strongly recommended at communities, offices, homes and public places such as the DVLA, registrar general, passport offices, etc., where daily services are rendered.

  • Dietary approach to protect yourself from COVID-19 and other infections

Most at times we hear ‘you are what you eat’ and eating healthy has the tendency to boost your immune system to maintain defenses against infection through the cooperation of many body’s tissues.

The digestive tract is lined with membranes that resist penetration by invading microbes and other unwanted substances just as the skin presents a physical barrier.

These linings are highly sensitive to vitamins and other nutritional deficiencies hence, the need to ensure your diet comes with adequate, balance, moderate and calorie-controlled nutrients amidst variety of food choices.

For your immune system to rush and defend the body against harm in cases of penetration of foreign invader, your white blood cell that depends on a steady flow of nutrients to build defense mechanism must have been served with nutritious meals to be able to act as scavengers and release antibodies to fight infections.

For your healthy eating, you need to be abreast of your daily caloric need. A recommended calorie intake is required daily for healthy living and your height, weight, age, gender and physical activity level is a determinant of your daily needs.

For a healthy individual: determining your daily caloric need:

There is Basal metabolic rate when at rest and you can determine that by using this calculation:

    Basal Metabolic rate:

    Adult male: 66 + (6.3 X weight in pounds) + (12.9 X height in inches) – (6.8 X age in years)

    Adult Female: 665 + (4.3 X weight in pounds) + (4.7 X height in Inches) – (4.7 X age in years)

To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

    • If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2

    • If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375

    • If you are moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55

    • If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725

    • If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

It is with the knowledge of this that the saying ‘eat well’ comes into reality. If you have any problem doing such, contact a registered dietitian for a guide.

Prevention is the golden standard! Therefore, eat based on your daily caloric needs.

The great news is that, every food item you choose has the tendency to offer you good health especially when eaten in moderation.

    General Guidelines

Aside your regular choice of local staples, you can add garlic, ginger, hot chillies to increase body’s heat energy in the outbreak of COVID-19 Regular intake of warm water can help protect you against the pandemic.

Take ginger soup or drink and exercise at least 30 minutes in a day.

Take less of refined sugars, sweets and oily foods: pastries, soft drinks.

It is necessary to drink water regularly but not too much ice water.

To those with an already impaired immune system ensure that, foods are thoroughly cooked.

Use salt water to soak your fruits and later wash under hygienic running water.

Choose cooked vegetables over raw vegetables and great garnishes.

Ensure your meat, egg, and fish are thoroughly cooked

Personal and food hygiene are key to healthy eating.

  • ‘Bring back tartan tracks to promote athletics in Accra’ Athletes

The annual athletics and football championship dubbed: “Sakora Games” ended over the weekend, with a call on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to consider restoring the tartan tracks at the Accra Sports Stadium to help promote athletics.

“The absence of the tracks had led to the decline of enthusiasm and the production of athletes in Accra and the only solution is for the government to restore the tracks to help unearth more athletes.”

Mr. Felix Timean, United States of America (USA)-based former Ghanaian national 1500 metres star made the call in an interview with the GNA Sports after the games at Teshie Salem Park in Accra.

He said the decline of athletics in Accra could be attributed to the poor performance of schools and clubs that participated in the national games and fail to excel in such competitions.

“It was sad that a competition was organised in Accra and all the medals went to teams from Ashanti and the Northern Regions. This should tell you that there was something wrong, which is lack of training facility,” Mr. Timean said.

He said: “We have the El-Wak and the Legon tracks but they belong to institutions, which would come at a huge cost, if we are to organize the event at any of them, so we would need the restoration of the tartan tracks at the Accra Stadium to boost athletics in Ghana”.

Mr. Timean said athletics was capable of putting the country on the world stage and that government should turn its attention to it by providing the necessary resources and the facilities as being done for football in the country.

“It was not easy hosting athletic teams from the Ashanti and the Northern Regions who numbered about 140 in hotels in Accra for three days,” he said.

Mr Timean advised the young athletes to keep training hard adding that success would be theirs in the future because athletics would expose them to opportunities for scholarship and jobs.

  • ‘You are creating fear and panic with your empty coronavirus video message’ – Wontumi scolds Mahama

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has reprimanded former President John Dramani Mahama for being too quick to comment on issues he hasn’t been properly briefed on.

Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako in an interview with Peacefmonline noted that he took offense to the video message Mr. Mahama shared on his social media handles because his statements were “empty” and “added no value” to the lives of Ghanaians.

He explained that the content of the addresses, made by President Akufo-Addo in the wake of the pandemic, was the appropriate message Ghanaians wanted to hear and not the ‘confusion’ former President sort to create with his “improper” message.

The NPP Chairman popularly known as Chairman Wontumi pontificated that the video address made by the former President “was a waste of time and was rather heightening tensions rather than restoring calm”.

According to him “in the USA, when Donald Trump addressed the nation, you didn’t have an opposition leader come out to act as though he knows better than the President. In the UK when Boris Johnson spoke, Jeremy Corbyn didn’t act as if he knows better. But in Ghana, Mahama is desperately trying to act as if he knows better than President Akufo-Addo.”

Chairman Wontumi warned Mr. Mahama to put a stop to his Facebook addresses noting that “you are creating fear and panic with your empty coronavirus video message”.

Former President John Dramani Mahama called for more action from the government in the wake of the outbreak of coronavirus in the country.

The leader and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress in a Facebook live address on Monday, March 16, 2020, said the government must hit the ground running to prevent the spread of the virus in the country.

He further called on the government to release its plan on how to keep the economy afloat following the outbreak.

Before former President Mahama’s comment, President Akufo-Addo had addressed the nation on measures taken by his government to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

In a message which was broadcast on state television, President Akufo-Addo noted that “I have come into your homes, again, this evening to provide an update, as I promised, on the measures taken by Government to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

You may recall that on Wednesday, 12th March 2020, when I first spoke to you directly on this matter, I announced the first raft of enhanced measures taken in response to the pandemic. At the time, there had been no reported, confirmed case of the Coronavirus in Ghana.

Since then, six (6) confirmed cases have been announced, all of the people who recently traveled into the country. Advisories on how to manage the developments have also been announced by the Ministries of Health and Information. Public education is being intensified to ensure that citizens are well-advised on preventive measures.”

  • Another GPL club to suffer points deduction after Medeama

The Ghana Football Association has been thrown into further chaos after a whistleblower revealed again on Thursday that Techiman Eleven Wonders fielded an unqualified player during a league match against Legon Cities last month.

It has emerged that forward Abdul Megeese Zakaria was ineligible to feature for the Techiman-based side during their 1-1 stalemate in Accra on February 29, 2020.

Top Ghanaian journalist Kwaku ‘Maestro’ Obeng revealed on local radio station Asempa FM on Thursday morning that the club should suffer sanctions for fielding the unqualified player.

Megeese Zakaria picked his first caution against Ashantigold on Match Day-3, picked his second caution against Aduana Stars at home on Match Day-4 and his third caution against West African Football Academy on Match-Day 11.

The player was rested in the side’s FA Cup tie against Kenyasi New Dreams and fielded against Legon Cities last month – a clear contravention of the new regulations of the association.

By the new regulation of the federation, the GFA is bound by it’s own laws to implement the report of a whistleblower which means it must act on the report to deduct Techiman Eleven Wonders SIX POINTS for fielding an unqualified player.

This is a massive test case for the Ghana FA after the association docked league leaders Medeama six pointsfor the same offence in a protest filed by Great Olympics.

Hearts of Oak have also being caught in the same web after fielding an unqualified Emmanuel Nettey during a league match against Elmina Sharks.

The decision to award boardroom points to Great Olympics has ruffed feathers and sparked a wave of criticism, opening the FA up for widespread attacks.

It’s now emerging several clubs are unaware of the law they claim was ‘smuggled’ in as the amended regulation was done by the Executive Council, setting the tone for long legal battles to further derail the league that has been halted by CoronaVirus.

While Medeama has rejected the decision to dock of their points, the Ghana FA appears to have little choice to act against the former Africa champions for a similar infraction of the law. Failure to do so will show that favouritism is the order of the day.

This situation is likely to throw the season into further chaos with a litany of legal battles looming.

While Article 23(5) A & 25 (1) of the GFA statutes accords congress with the supreme and legislative authority and power, it appears Article 39(K) of the amended statutes has vested parallel legislative authority on the Executive Council – a situation which has divided opinions in the West African nation.

The new article appears to be a clear departure and a practice in contradiction to the status quo ante.

Critics says the new stipulation appears to elevate the Executive Council to the level of congress for no apparent reason as many football aficionados have vowed to ensure the authority of congress is jealously guarded.

  • SpaceX plans first manned flight to space station in May

Elon Musk’s SpaceX will send astronauts to the International Space Station for the first time in May, NASA said, announcing the first crewed launch from the United States to the platform since 2011.

The tech entrepreneur’s company will launch a Falcon 9 rocket to transport NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley in a first for the space agency as it looks to cut costs.

“NASA and SpaceX are currently targeting no earlier than mid-to-late May for launch,” the US space agency said in a statement Wednesday.

In March, Musk’s Crew Dragon capsule made a round trip to the ISS, which is in orbit more than 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth, with a mannequin on board, before returning to the Atlantic after six days in space.

Since the last US space shuttle mission in 2011, after 30 years of service, only the Russians have been going back and forth to the ISS.

SpaceX has made the trip 15 times since 2012, but only to refuel the station.

It is not the only private company servicing NASA: Boeing has also won a contract and is developing its own Starliner capsule.

  • Coronavirus: Premier League to discuss plans to complete season

Premier League clubs will attempt to hammer out a plan to complete their suspended season when they meet via a conference call on Thursday.

English football is in lockdown as part of the worldwide bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Top-flight fixtures have been suspended until April 4 at the earliest and while it seems certain that the lay-off will be extended, the postponement of the Euro 2020 finals has created room for manoeuvre.

It is understood the focus at the meeting will be on concluding the 2019/20 campaign at some point rather than on what might happen should they be unable to restart.

There are signs that clubs are split on the way forward.

Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber said if the season were to be “frozen” it would be unjust on Liverpool, who are on the brink of their first top-flight title for 30 years.

But West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady said if the fixtures could not be completed, the only fair solution would be to declare the season “null and void”.

Some clubs lower down the English football pyramid fear they could be forced out of business if football does not return until after the summer.

The English Football League (EFL) has already announced a £50 million ($58 million) short-term relief package to help out struggling lower league clubs.

Underlining the parlous state of some clubs, Scottish Premiership side Hearts announced that it had asked staff to take a 50 percent pay cut.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Hearts owner Anne Budge said: “In order to try to prevent a staff redundancy programme and to protect as many jobs as possible, I am proposing to implement a club-wide salary reduction programme.

“We have asked all full-time employees, managers, coaches, players and player back-room staff, with effect from the beginning of April, to accept a 50 percent cut in their monthly salary.”

She said she did not know how long the measure would be in place for.

  • Its wrong to suspend parliamentary sittings over coronavirus – Majority Leader

Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu says persons who have asked parliament to suspend all sittings given the outbreak of the coronavirus in Ghana are wrong.

The legislator said we have not gotten to the point where parliament would have to suspend its sitting.

The work of parliament is special hence we cannot suspend it.

He referred to the Imposition Bill laid before the House on Wednesday saying should the House suspend its sitting, they would not be able to approve the bill.

The Attorney-General Gloria Akuffo on Wednesday laid before parliament an Imposition of Restrictions Bill 2020.

The bill will provide legal backing for his outlined measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

The bill has been referred to the Constitution and Legal Affairs Committee of parliament for consideration.

Parliament he said would need at least half of the legislators, to approve the bill and so, it would not be prudent to have sittings suspended.

The Majority Leader disclosed they would be holding sitting at the Conference Centre following an order to have the chamber fumigated.

This forms part of measures to prevent a spread of Coronavirus in the House.

The public gallery he explained is no longer accessible.

  • Coronavirus: Frequent hand washing may cause water shortage in Ghana -GWCL hints

Director of communications at the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey, says the frequent hand washing practice by Ghanaians amidst the coronavirus outbreak may increase demand for water thereby affecting few areas in water supply.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun aired on Happy 98.9FM, he explained: “We are also aware of the COVID-19 pandemic of which we have all been admonished to be washing our hands under running water. Now, we are washing our hands regularly under running water which means that it is going to affect demand for water because more people will be using more water now. If you also realize, we are now communicating with other parts of our body like our shoulders, our legs and all manner of communication so we are also not only being asked to wash our hands regularly but to also bath or wash down thoroughly more than we did previously. In all these, it is very clear that demand for water will be going higher”.

He thus admonished Ghanaians to use water judiciously by avoiding unnecessary watering of lawns and washing of vehicles with treated water. He also added that people who live in areas where there is constant supply of water should manage water wisely so that water will be available for supply to other areas that lack constant flow.

Stanley Martey was reacting to the recent statement by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) that the Ghana Water Company Limited is experiencing some challenges with Accra supply.

In his interview with Happy FM, he explained that these “challenges” included but were not limited to the damaging effect from galamsey operations in the last few months and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has affected water supply in the country.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization and other health organizations have recommended the frequent washing of hands with soap and running water to reduce the chances of contracting the coronavirus disease.

  • Tokyo 2020 Olympic organisers respond to frustrated athletes

The International Olympic Committee says it has held “constructive” talks with athlete representatives about the coronavirus crisis.

President Thomas Bach admitted he was “confronted with many questions” over qualification and restrictions.

But he also insisted that “everybody realised that we still have more than four months to go” until Tokyo 2020.

The summer showpiece is still scheduled to begin on 24 July despite the cancellation of other sports events.

There has been mounting criticism from athletes, with the IOC accused of putting them “in danger” by insisting it remains fully committed to the Games.

Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi said the IOC was “risking our health”, while Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson said training had become “impossible”.

Speaking in an in-house IOC interview, Bach said: “We have just had a really great call with 220 athlete representatives from all around the world, it was very constructive and gave us a lot of insight.

“We aimed to continue being very realistic in our analysis. We will keep acting in a responsible way that is in the interest of the athletes whilst always respecting our two principles – the safeguarding and health of the athletes and contributing to the containment of the virus, and secondly to protect the interest of the athletes and Olympic sport.”

British four-time Olympic rowing gold medallist Matthew Pinsent criticised Bach’s comments on Twitter, accusing him of not properly listening to athletes’ concerns and stating that postponing the Olympics is the best option for all concerned.

“I’m sorry Mr Bach but this is tone deaf. The instinct to keep safe is not compatible with athlete training, travel and focus that a looming Olympics demands of athletes, spectators and organisers,” Pinsent wrote.

“Keep them safe. Call it off.”

Earlier, in a statement, the IOC had warned “no solution will be ideal” in preparing for Tokyo 2020.

“This is an exceptional situation which requires exceptional solutions,” it said.

“The IOC is committed to finding a solution with the least negative impact for the athletes, while protecting the integrity of the competition and the athletes’ health.

“No solution will be ideal in this situation, and this is why we are counting on the responsibility and solidarity of the athletes.”

Exploring further solutions to ensure that the football calendar at all levels can be completed

Look at the need for regulations to offer special dispensations on the status and transfers of players given the status of worldwide competitions, with contracts coming to an end on 1 July.

    Infantino said of the decision

“This exceptional situation requires exceptional measures and decisions. This crisis impacts the entire world and that is why solutions need to take into account the interests of all stakeholders around the world. We have shown again today a spirit of cooperation, solidarity and unity.

“These must be our key drivers moving forward and I would like to thank all the Confederations Presidents for their positive contributions and efforts. Fifa will keep in close contact with all stakeholders to assess and take the necessary steps to deal with the variety of issues we are facing.

  • Coronavirus: Italy deaths near 3,000 with 475 in a day

Italy on Wednesday reported 475 more deaths from the coronavirus, a new record high that brings the total number of victims in the country to 2,978.

Latest figures provided by the Italian Civil Protection Department show that COVID-19 cases in the country have now reached 28,710, a 10% rise from Tuesday.

The Italian government is mulling over whether to further strengthen its already strict containment measures, which have brought the country to a near-total lockdown.

The hotbed of the outbreak in Italy remains the northern Lombardy region, which accounts for 1,959 of the total fatalities in the country.

Attilio Fontana, the governor of Lombardy, issued a desperate appeal to citizens on Wednesday, urging them to stay remain at home or face more stringent lockdown measures.

“Unfortunately, the number of infections is not decreasing. They continue to rise, and soon we will not be able to heal those who are falling ill,” he said.

Italy is the worst-hit country in Europe and has the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world after China.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Europe as the new epicenter of the coronavirus, which first emerged in Wuhan, China last December.

According to WHO data, the virus has now spread to 164 countries and territories, and there were over 194,000 cases and nearly 7,900 fatalities around the world by Wednesday evening.
