  • Hearts-Kotoko London game postponed – Organizers dispel cancellation reports

Organizers of the Hearts of Oak- Asante Kotoko game to be played in London have denied reports that the game has been cancelled.

There were reports that the historic Independence anniversary celebration match has been cancelled after football in England were suspended because of the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

The game was scheduled to be played on May 9, 2020, but Justin Addo, who is a member of the organizers of the match disclosed to GHANASoccernet.com that the game could be postponed.

He also revealed the two teams have been granted six months visas so there was no way the epic encounter could be cancelled.

“Clearly the report is speculative. But unfortunately, the present situation with the postponement of football in the UK most likely means that the game will also have to be postponed. Our health matters most in all things,” he told GHANASoccernet.com.

“On the bright side both teams already have 6 months visas, so there is room to postpone. We will come out with a definite statement shortly,” he added.

  • It was God who allowed it to happen – Ghanaians on Coronavirus

A cross-section of Ghanaians have expressed concern about the coronavirus, whilst some are scared others were optimistic that the impact would not be severe on the nation.

This was after it was made known that two individuals have been infected with the virus.

In view of the concern, many institutions have started to institute protective measures, which includes public education, usage of alcoholic hand sanitizers, washing of hands regularly and avoiding unnecessary body contacts.

Dr Patience Anka, Traditional Herbal Practitioner at God is Love Detoxify Health Centre, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, advised that, food should be well cooked before eating and that “we should eat a lot of vegetables and fruits in order to be healthy”.

She also urged the public to avoid handshakes and listen to the radio to get more updates on the virus.

Alhaji Chief-Dawud Ibrahim of Madina Zongo, who is a driver, was superstitious claiming that since the virus currently has no-known cure, then “it was God who allowed it to happen”.

He said we should intensify our prayers more that we are currently doing and God would save humanity.

Mr Kofi Kissi, a coconut seller, said with the two reported cases in the country, there is the need to take issues of protection seriously.

He commended government for the intervention in preparing the country against the disease.

Mr Kingsford Ebenezer, mobile money vendor, suggested that government should prevent people from affected countries from entering to Ghana and also the borders should be under tight security.

  • Coronavirus: ‘We are not safe’ – Residents of Elubo lament

Some irate residents of Elubo in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region have expressed fear and concern, following an outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

The residents who claim they are not safe, lamented the indiscriminate crossing of the Elubo border without proper checks and scrutiny.

Elubo is the main border post between Ghana and La Cote D’Ivoire. It is also a cosmopolitan town dotted with different towns apart from Nzemas.

On Thursday, March 12, 2020, Ghana confirmed two cases of COVID-19 the first incident to be reported in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic in China.

Some residents who spoke to GhanaWeb’s Western Regional Correspondent Daniel Kaku, were still nervous and nursing fears as authorities in charge of the border’s operations of the border, they say, are still allowing travellers in without doing the adequate checks.

The residents entreated management to establish checkpoints to screen especially neighbors from the French-speaking countries who always cross the border to the Elubo community and other parts of the country.

According to the residents, these persons have a high tendency to import the disease from their countries if not checked.

“What I want to say is that they should mount a canopy at the checkpoint so that whoever will come from La Cote DIvoire, will wash his or her hands because if you tell the French people not to touch us, still they will touch us”, they lamented.

According to them, since Cote d’Ivoire had recorded one, they fear their citizens could touch them with the virus.

They added, “Right now we have hand sanitizers to protect ourselves but our mothers at home do not have so it is possible to contract the pandemic and spread it”.

“At Elubo border here, we are not safe because people can cross the border without proper checks, Elubo here we are not safe”, a lady fumed.

Another angry lady said management at the border have failed to provide hand sanitizers to wash the hands of those who cross the border on daily basis

She, therefore, appealed to government, to, as a matter of urgency, make hand sanitizers available at the Elubo border to protect them against the killer virus.

  • FDA, Police, Customs Division seize smuggled goods at Achimota

The Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority have intercepted a 40-feet truck full of contraband goods that were smuggled into Ghana on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

The goods, believed to have been smuggled from Nigeria and included sexual enhancement drugs, pirated wax prints and other pharmaceutical products, were seized at Achimota.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command, told the media that police had a tip-off that the truck with the registration number AE 960 JEG was loaded with goods believed to be contraband had arrived from Kano in Nigeria.

She explained that the goods were about to be offloaded within Accra and its environs, thus, police rushed to the scene and arrested Sani Mohammed, the driver of the vehicle, together with the goods.

DSP Tenge said the vehicle was impounded at the Regional Police Headquarters for investigations and a search in it revealed a quantity of the pirated wax prints and the pharmaceutical products.

The police then invited the FDA and the Customs for the necessary action to be taken, she said.

Mr James Lartey, Public Relations Officer of the FDA in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the medicines were supposed to be imported to Ghana via two approved routes.

He named the two legal routes as the Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Habour, adding that anywhere else was illegal.

Mr Lartey said one could not import any drug unless it was approved, noting that there were drugs that had to be stored under certain temperatures whilst they were being imported, else, they would go bad before their original expiry date. The Public Relations officer said drugs which have been approved would be kept under the right temperature.

The collaboration between FDA and the security agencies would ensure the safe disposal of the unapproved drugs as well as protect the lives innocent citizens.

He cautioned the public against the importation of counterfeit drugs, explaining that when found culpable, one would spend between 15 and 25 years in prison.

Unapproved importation of drugs would also lead to a fine of not less than 7,500 penalty units, equivalent GH¢90,000.00, he added.

  • One big Coronavirus challenge: How to stop touching your face

It took a coronavirus outbreak to remind us that we touch our faces way too many times. And cutting down on that will help stop the spread of the virus, health officials say.

In 2015, a Sydney university observed medical students on video and recorded how many times they touched their faces. Each of the 26 future doctors under observation touched their faces an average 23 times per hour.

Nearly half of those times — 44% — involved contact with their eyes, nose or mouth.

Not touching your face is harder than it sounds

As we fight the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed 19 people in the US and more than 3,500 worldwide, officials are emphasizing all it takes is one touch for microbes on your fingers to slip into your body through your nostril, eyes or mouth.

“Viruses that affect the respiratory system enter the body through mucosal membranes which are found in the nose, oral cavity and lips. With poor hand hygiene, it’s easy to acquire a viral infection this way,” says Dr. Dawn Mueni Becker, an infectious disease specialist in Gainesville, Florida.

But we’ve been touching our faces all our lives, and stopping that habit is easier said than done.

On Friday, a video widely shared on social media showed a California health official touching her face during a news conference advising people not to do that as the coronavirus outbreak spreads.

“Start working on not touching your face, because one main way viruses spread is when you touch your own mouth, nose or eyes,” she says. Then she licks her finger to flip to the next page of her remarks — seemingly unaware she was not following her own advice.

Even one notorious self-proclaimed germaphobe can’t help himself. “I haven’t touched my face in weeks — in weeks. I miss it,” President Donald Trump said jokingly last week. He was photographed touching his face Monday.

Touching your face is at times tied to stress

Like most behaviors, constant face touching starts at a young age and becomes a habit over time. People touch their face for various reasons. One 2014 federal government study suggested it helps reduce stress and discomfort

“Spontaneous facial self-touch gestures are performed manifold every day by every human being, primarily in stressful situations,” the study says. “These movements are not usually designed to communicate and are frequently accomplished with little or no awareness.”

Touching your face is so common, there’s a website that uses your webcam to notify you when you touch your face and keeps track of how many times you do it.

There are safe ways to touch your face

If you can’t stop yourself, it’s not the end of the world, Becker says. There are ways to lower your chances of infections from face touching.

“Being conscious or aware of this habit is helpful when it comes to avoiding touching the face,” Becker says. “Identifying triggers such as runny nose or urge to sneeze is important. In this case, having tissue close by is helpful — it’s better to use that to touch your face than bare hands.”

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water is not available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Soap and water are especially preferred if hands are visibly dirty, the CDC says, and especially after using the bathroom, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

Think of all the germy things people touch all day. Cellphones, car keys, doors and elevators — even wads of cash that you have no idea the places they’ve been. Now imagine transferring all the bacteria, viruses and allergens from those items into your body through the mucous membranes in your nose, mouth and eyes. Or through a cut in your face or neck that you have no idea exists.

  • Nurses urged to leave Coronavirus isolation units if protective gears are not provided

Nurses and Midwives have been advised by their mother association, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to leave isolation units if they are not supplied personal protective equipment by the government.

The Association also urged the health workers to be on alert in the conduct of their daily routines in light of the outbreak of the 2019 Coronavirus.

The Association in a release on Friday, March 13, 2020 said health officials must ensure that protective gears are made available to the nurses and midwives who will be on the frontline working in isolation units in the four designated treatment centres for Coronavirus in Ghana.

“Nursing and Midwifery managers must ensure that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are available for use by all nurses and midwives working in the isolation Units in the four designated treatment centers.”

“In the event of unavailability of these logistics at the isolation centres, we strongly advise our nurses and midwives to protect their lives by removing themselves from that environment,” the statement said.

While urging nurses and midwives to carry out their jobs professionally without panic, the Association said the public must remain calm and follow preventive guidelines outlined by the Ministry of Health.

“We assure our stakeholders that the GRNMA is committed to supporting the national coordinated efforts to identify, manage, contain and prevent the spread of the virus,” the release said.

  • National Coordinator of School Feeding Programme sacked

The former National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), Dr Kwame Adu-Nsiah, who was exonerated from allegations of “fictitious deals” in the management of the programme, has been laid off.

In his place, Mrs Gertrude Quashigah, who has been acting in that position for about a year, has been confirmed as the substantive national coordinator of the programme.

    Allegations

Dr Adu-Nsiah was suspended in December, 2018 over allegations that he had supervised “fictitious deals” in the management of the school feeding programme.

However, a committee that was set up by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to probe the issue exonerated him from any wrongdoing after almost one year of investigation.

The committee, which was chaired by the Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, recommended that he should be reinstated with all his entitlements restored to him.

Alternatively, the committee said Dr Adu-Nsiah could be taken back to the Trust Hospital, from where he was seconded to the GSFP or be reassigned to another institution within the public sector.

    Checks

Four months after the committee submitted its report, checks by the Daily Graphic revealed that Dr Adu-Nsiah had been laid off from the GSFP but he had not been taken back to the Trust Hospital or reassigned to any public institution.

The paper also found out that, a letter dated December 24, 2019, from the Presidency and signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, confirmed Mrs Quashigah as the substantive coordinator.

When contacted, Dr Adu-Nsiah confirmed that he had been officially laid off from the GSFP and was waiting for any directives on the next line of action.

“They have communicated to me officially to move out of office and I have done so. I have not been asked to go back to the Trust Hospital or reassigned. I am still waiting to see what will happen,” he said.

    Good move

For his part, the head of Public Relations at the GSFP, Mr Siiba Alfa, described the appointment of a substantive coordinator as “good news” because “it has brought closure to the brouhaha surrounding the school feeding programme.”

“Mrs Gertrude Quashigah has been acting as the coordinator of the GSFP since the beginning of 2019 when these issues were ongoing so the confirmation is a big boost to the effective management of the programme,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders to give Dr Quashigah the necessary support to manage the GSFP in a manner that would make the desired impact on the beneficiaries.

    Concerns

Meanwhile, caterers under the GSFP have expressed concerns about the delay in payment for meals cooked, saying that the development has made it difficult for them to feed the children.

Some of them, who spoke to the Daily Graphic from the Greater Accra, Volta and Oti regions, said they were owed salaries between six and nine months.

They said they were being harassed by their creditors over unpaid debts.

    Assurance

However, Mr Alfa assured the caterers that pragmatic steps were being taken to pay all salaries owed them.

“We have paid the caterers up to the third tern of the 2018/19 academic year. There are a few who may not have received the money because of documentation issues but about 99 per cent have received it.

“We want to assure them that we are processing the data for the first term of the 2019/2020 academic year so they will be paid very soon,” he said.

    Background

Dr Adu-Nsiah was suspended over allegations of involvement in alleged “fictitious deals” in the payment of caterers of the programme.

He was asked to step aside on December 13, 2018 after a National Security investigation reportedly implicated him in what was described as “fraudulent deals” in the running of the feeding programme.

A letter addressed to the then coordinator, signed by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), Ms Cynthia Morrison, and dated December 13, 2018 accused him of inflating figures on schools under the programme.

He was subsequently directed to hand over to his deputy by the close of Friday, December 14, 2018.

Following his suspension, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo set up a three-member team under the chairmanship of the Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, to investigate the matter.

  • Coronavirus: Refrain from communal hand washing CWSA urges Ghanaians

A passionate call has been made for Ghanaians to adopt proper hand washing approaches and not engage in communal hand washing to help prevent the spread of the newly discovered pandemic COVID-19.

“The act of washing your hands in one bowl as a group is not proper and can be more dangerous than not washing hands at all, as you will be introducing new viruses and sharing them through that common bowl in the name of proper hand washing”.

Mrs. Theodora Adomako-Adjei, a Senior Extension Services officer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) said this during a work-place prevention activity which provided hand washing water bowls for the institution to ensure the safety of its staff on the back of the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to her, hand washing is the simplest thing to do but very difficult for people to practice adding that, we should not wait for crisis such as corona to be practicing correct hand washing.

She bemoaned the attitude of Ghanaians regarding hand washing and cautioned that even though it is an effective intervention, if not timely, correctly and appropriately done, can resort to failure and create much more anxiety than we are currently experiencing.

“We cannot run our hands under water and claim to have engaged in safe hand washing” she opined.

In her outline of proper hand washing, she said, “get water and soap, wet your hands first to make sure to soak enough soap, apply the soap and ensure that you get a lot of bubbles, rub your hands together, wash between the fingers and finger nails as well as the back of your hands and rinse under clean running water .

She sounded a note of caution that, after all these, if you decide to dry up your neatly washed hands with dirty contaminated towels, work done is nil as it is sure to be carrying home some viruses introduced by the dirty towel.

Mrs. Adomako Adjei was however hopeful that with the right hygienic behaviors, approaches and practices, we can promote good health and urged other institutions to take the necessary steps to create a safe and enabling environment for their staff and clientele.

  • Why toilet paper, of all things, is the latest coronavirus panic buy

Masks were the first to go. Then, hand sanitizers. Now, novel coronavirus panic buyers are snatching up … toilet paper?

Retailers in the US and Canada have started limiting the number of toilet paper packs customers can buy in one trip. Some supermarkets in the UK are sold out. Grocery stores in Australia have hired security guards to patrol customers.

An Australian newspaper went so far as printing eight extra pages in a recent edition — emergency toilet paper, the newspaper said, should Aussies run out.

Why? Toilet paper does not offer special protection against the virus. It’s not considered a staple of impending emergencies, like milk and bread are.

So why are people buying up rolls more quickly than they can be restocked?

Reason 1: People resort to extremes when they hear conflicting messages

Steven Taylor is a clinical psychologist and author of “The Psychology of Pandemics,” which takes a historic look at how people behave and respond to pandemics. And compared to past pandemics, the global response to the novel coronavirus has been one of widespread panic.

“On the one hand, [the response is] understandable, but on the other hand it’s excessive,” Taylor, a professor and clinical psychologist at the University of British Columbia, told CNN. “We can prepare without panicking.”

The novel coronavirus scares people because it’s new, and there’s a lot about it that’s still unknown. When people hear conflicting messages about the risk it poses and how seriously they should prepare for it, they tend to resort to the extreme, Taylor said.

“When people are told something dangerous is coming, but all you need to do is wash your hands, the action doesn’t seem proportionate to the threat,” he said. “Special danger needs special precautions.”

Reason 2: Some are reacting to the lack of a clear direction from officials

Several countries have already imposed mass quarantines. People buying up toilet paper and other household supplies may be preparing for the same thing in their city, said Baruch Fischhoff, a psychologist and professor in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy and the Institute for Politics and Strategy at Carnegie Mellon University.

“Unless people have seen … official promises that everyone will be taken care of, they are left to guess at the probability of needing the extra toilet paper, sooner rather than later,” he told CNN. “The fact that there are no official promises might increase those probabilities.”

Reason 3: Panic buying begets panic buying

Images of empty shelves and shopping carts piled high with supplies have inundated news reports and social feeds. People see images of panic buyers, assume there’s a reason to panic and buy up supplies, too, Taylor said.

“People, being social creatures, we look to each other for cues for what is safe and what is dangerous,” he said. “And when you see someone in the store, panic buying, that can cause a fear contagion effect.”

All those photos of empty shelves may lead people to believe that they must rush out and grab toilet paper while they still can. And what started as perceived scarcity becomes actual scarcity, Taylor said.

Social media is a huge player in novel coronavirus fear-mongering, Taylor said. Misinformation spreads with ease, and open platforms amplify voices of panic.

Reason 4: It’s natural to want to overprepare

There may be some practicality in stocking up, says Frank Farley, a professor at Temple University and former president of the American Psychological Association.

With the CDC and other international health agencies now advising that certain populations should stay home and avoid contact with other people or crowds, it’s natural to want to prepare, he said.

“[The novel coronavirus] is engendering a sort of survivalist psychology, where we must live as much as possible at home and thus must ‘stock up’ on essentials, and that certainly includes toilet paper,” he told CNN. “After all, if we run out of [toilet paper], what do we replace it with?”

You’ll be spending money on toilet paper at one point or another — the only extra costs are the hassle of doing it sooner rather than later, contending with long lines and having difficulty finding it, Fischhoff said.

Since they’ll eventually use the toilet paper, the analysis is different than if they’d bought something they likely wouldn’t use, like a perishable item, he said.

The US Department of Homeland Security advises Americans to keep at least two weeks’ worth of food, toiletries and medical supplies on hand anyway, but Taylor said most people don’t. So when health officials publicly advise to stock up, they may take it to the extreme.

Reason 5: It allows some to feel a sense of control

The people who are stocking up on supplies are thinking about themselves and their family and what they need to do to prepare, Taylor said — not healthcare workers, sick people or even regular folks who might run out of toilet paper sometime soon.

“It’s all due to this wave of anticipatory anxiety,” Taylor said. “People become anxious ahead of the actual infection. They haven’t thought about the bigger picture, like what are the consequences of stockpiling toilet paper.”

But people only act that way out of fear. Fischhoff said that preparing, even by purchasing toilet paper, returns a sense of control to what seems like a helpless situation.

“Depending on how people estimate the chances of needing the toilet paper, the hassle might be worth it,” he said. “If it gave them the feeling that they had done everything that they could, it might free them to think about other things than coronavirus.”

  • How to keep your workplace clean — and yourself healthy — during the novel coronavirus outbreak

You may spend more waking hours at work than you do at home, but when was the last time you really, really cleaned your workspace?

Offices provide hundreds of microscopic hiding spots for viruses and bacteria — the crevices in your keyboard, the button for your floor on the elevator, the communal fridge handle.

While the novel coronavirus is primarily transmitted between people, touching infected surfaces can pass the virus, too.

But don’t call out sick just yet: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) have tips on how to properly disinfect work stations to keep yourself healthy and your workplace clean during a pandemic.

    Wipe down your work station.

Before you start your shift, use an EPA-approved product to disinfect your desk, keyboard, computer mouse, work phone and any other objects or surfaces that you or your coworkers touch a lot.

But make sure you’re disinfecting the right way. To work, the surface you disinfect must remain wet for a long period of time — usually between 3 to 5 minutes — and that’ll require a lot of wipes.

    Wash your hands. A lot.

Get ready to make lots of trips to the nearest sink. You should wash your hands after you eat, touch door handles or blow your nose, among many, many other actions. Whenever you can wash your hands, you should — just make sure you’re washing your hands correctly. Here’s the proper way to do it.

    Sanitize when soap isn’t available.

If you can’t leave a meeting to scrub your hands with soap, hand sanitizers are a fine substitute. But it’s always best to wash with soap and water after a few pumps of sanitizer — gels won’t clean your hands like washing them will.

    Save the handshakes.

The novel coronavirus is transmitted primarily between people, so avoid unnecessary physical contact. Refusing a handshake isn’t ill-mannered anymore — it’s recommended. Flash a friendly wave, peace sign or thumbs-up instead.

    Clean your smart phone.

What was all that hand washing and disinfecting worth if your phone is dirty? You’re safe using a damp, soapy microfiber cloth to clean the screens and backs of iPhones and Androids (though Apple said this week that disinfectant wipes are OK to use on iPhones, too). Just avoid getting water in any of the ports.

There you have it. A little scrubbing goes a long way. But if you want to kill the most germs, note the difference between disinfecting and cleaning: Cleaning only removes viruses and bacteria from surfaces, but disinfecting wipes them out.

  • New vegetable varieties introduced to farmers in Upper East Region

New improved vegetable varieties have been introduced to smallholder farmer groups in the Upper East Region to help address challenges associated with vegetable production and raise output.

It includes; 14 tomato and 11 pepper varieties, which are being introduced to the farmers in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, while additional nine onion varieties were introduced in the Bawku Municipality.

Their introduction is part of the Ghana Agricultural Technology Evaluation (GATE) project being implemented by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF)in partnership with the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana.

The first phase of the project, which started in 2019 and is expected to end in 2021, is jointly funded by AATF and the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV).

Announcement of the varieties was made at a demonstration farm in Koronia in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality to introduce the new improved varieties to the commercial and smallholder farmers.

Dr Leander Melomey, the Project Officer, GATE project, said at the event the motive was to provide opportunities for farmers to increase yields while maintaining high quality.

Dr Melomey, who is also a Research Fellow at WACCI, indicated that the varieties were introduced in collaboration with some selected seed companies, which he named as; Syngenta, RMG, Dizengoff, Agriseed, East-West and Rijk Zwaan.

She described them as early maturing and of good quality, high yield, resistant to diseases and tolerant of harsh weather condition.

The demonstration farm was to engage and introduce farmers to the various new improved varieties to enable them make choices that would help the GATE project and the seed companies make available those varieties to them.

She explained that the old varieties of tomatoes were planted on the demonstration farm last year, but they all died off, however, the improved varieties survived and begun to mature.

She said the improved seeds and the right application of the agronomic practices would result in increase in vegetable production that would ensure nutritional security and improve income of smallholder farmers.

Mr Gideon Owirwdu, the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Director of the Department of Agriculture, said production of vegetables especially tomatoes had fallen due to low demand.

He said the major buyers of tomatoes in the area complained of poor quality and short shelf life and preferred to buy from Burkina Faso.

He said the vegetables, which were transplanted in November, 2019, were almost matured, certifying that the varieties were of good quality.

He encouraged the farmers to adopt the new varieties and adhere strictly to agronomic practices to increase yields and meet market demand.

The farmers expressed gratitude to the project implementers for affording them the opportunity to have high yielding varieties that would help produce quality vegetables for consumers.

Apart from the new varieties, the farmers also learnt new innovations which were essential in increasing other agriculture production sectors and would replicate the knowledge acquired to other farmers to ensure wider coverage.

  • Coronavirus: Headteachers in Tamale ‘snub’ media for fear of GES victimization

Headteachers in various government schools in the Tamale Metropolis have refused to speak to the media on measures they are putting in place to fight the outbreak of coronavirus which has become a pandemic.

The reason for the hesitation, they noted was for fear of being queried by the Ghana Education Service (GES) over failure to secure permission first before attending to the media.

Some of the teachers who spoke to GhanaWeb averred that they have been warned by the GES not to share any information with the media without their notice irrespective f the tenacity of the issue with the claim that they may tarnish the image of the government in the process.

Out of four schools visited, three were government schools and the other, a private institution.

However, a teacher who wants to remain anonymous, during the visit to the schools, noted that the institution has since January 2020 sanitized the students on the deadly coronavirus and the need for all to practice personal hygiene.

Also, the school has made provision of water and soap for students to practice frequent handwashing while in school.

The teacher also hinted of plans to provide hand sanitizers for students to help in the fight against the pandemic.

  • GTA directs hospitality industries to start screening guests

Mr Akwesi Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has directed all tourism and hospitality industries to immediately start screening all guests before giving them access to their facilities.

He said this was one of several measures by the GTA to ensure the industry was well protected against the deadly coronavirus.

At a meeting with industry players, in Accra, Mr Agyemang said although the industry had been badly hit by the outbreak, the Authority would continue to ensure that everyone was very well protected to continue their businesses without fear and panic.

“The hospitality and tourism industry is very sensitive and any little spur of fear and panic would hit the industry badly.”

Mr Agyemang said already the industry had seen a lot of cancellations of bookings into hotels, airlines that are shutting down, empty seats, and people not visiting sites.

“We have already seen a certain trend over the last few weeks and its worrying but based on the reassuring that we have from the Ghana Health Service and especially given the strong statement by the President we feel emboldened with the educational drive within the industry.”

He called on operators of tourism facilities not to be scared but take care and at every public area ensure there was open display of messages printed and pasted on precautions to be taken as the Ghana Health Service has advised.

“We are asking all hotels to ensure that in the hotel rooms these messages are boldly displayed and there are sanitised and other washing equipment that is available for people to wash their hands and avoid hand shakes.”

Mr Agyemang said in the area of the restaurant and kitchen they have to wear protective gear and tourism establishments must get the testing guns to test temperatures and the general health of staff.

“Per the regulations that we have the staff has to have certain health certifications by the various assemblies and from now we are going to enforce that because they are the front liners and have to ensure they are safe.”

He said they were very confident in the measures that government had taken and were assured of the readiness of the country to tackle this situation going forward.

“Coming at the very successful end of the year of return, this is the time that we are picking up the pieces for the beyond the return. As more countries put out travel restrictions and get infected, definitely the impact would be felt.”

“We are monitoring, globally there have been a negative 63 per cent cancellations of hotel flights and about 34 of hotel bookings and that tells you that we need to prepare.”

Mr Adnan Yucel, the General Manager, Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, said since the outbreak they had had a lot of cancellations, particularly from international companies.

“We are supposed to have some IMF, World Bank, UNDP and some United States related meetings, but they were all suddenly cancelled. Lots of cancellations from now through to May, which could have earned the facility hundreds and thousands of US dollars, which has affected us dramatically,” he said.

Mr Yucel said they were trying to take some precautions and hope that they could bounce back to their normal track by May or June.

  • FDA, Police, Customs seize smuggled goods

The Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority have intercepted a 40-feet truck full of contraband goods that were smuggled into Ghana on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

The goods, believed to have been smuggled from Nigeria included; enhanced sexual drugs, pirated wax prints, among other pharmaceutical products were seized at Achimota at about 1000hours.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command told the media that police had a tip-off that the truck with the registration number AE 960 JEG was loaded with goods believed to be contraband had arrived from Kano in Nigeria.

The police then invited the FDA and the Customs for the necessary action to be taken, she stated.

Mr James Lartey, Public Relations Officer of the FDA in an interview with the media said medicines were not supposed to be imported in Ghana with the two approved routes.

He named the two legal routes as the Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Habour, adding that anywhere else was illegal.

Mr Lartey said drugs could not be imported unless it was approved, noting that there were drugs that had to be stored under certain temperatures whilst they were being imported, else, they would go bad before their original expiry date.

The Public Relations officer said drugs which were approved would be kept under the right temperature.

The collaboration between FDA and the security agencies would ensure the safe disposal of the unapproved drugs and protect the lives of innocent citizens.

He cautioned the public against the importation of counterfeit drugs, explaining that when found culpable, one would spend between 15 and 25 years in prison.

Unapproved importation of drugs would also lead to a fine of not less than 7,500 penalty units, equivalent GH¢90,000.00, he added.

  • Police impound Nigerian truck

The Accra Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has impounded a 40-footer truck carrying contraband goods from Nigeria to Ghana.

Sani Mohammed, a 30-year-old driver in charge of the truck with registration number AE 960 JEG, has been arrested by the police to assist in investigation.

The truck was impounded at Achimota heading towards a warehouse in a yet-to-be identified location, according to police reports.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Effia Tenge, who is Regional Police Public Relations Officer for Accra, when contacted, said the truck was spotted by the police around Achimota after personnel had suspected it of carrying contraband goods.

Upon a search, she said, the police detected that the truck contained pharmaceutical products and wax prints and so they had to call on the relevant stakeholders for assistance.

DSP Tenge confirmed that the arrest of the truck driver would help the police to trace the owners of the said goods and get further information on how the goods got into the country.

A representative of the Customs Division of the GRA, Nana Yankey, in an address, said they suspected the goods were smuggled into the country using head porters since Nigeria had closed its border.

“What these smugglers do is to carry the goods through unapproved routes and after going through the normal borders, with Temporary Vehicle Importation (TVI), they drive at a distance and load these drugs back into the vehicle,” she noted.

The goods, he revealed, were currently being examined at the Airport Customs site for the necessary action to be taken.

  • Europe’s share markets rise as global sell-off eases

European stock indexes are recovering some ground after huge falls on Thursday.

Markets have seen volatile trading as investors weigh the effect of the coronavirus against measures aimed at easing its economic impact.

Share markets across the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, Australia and India, have experienced major swings.

It came after the Dow and S&P 500 in the US saw their biggest one-day declines since 1987.

In recent days authorities around the world have announced emergency measures in an attempt to avoid recession.

On Friday, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) prohibited short selling of a raft of shares in Italian and Spanish firms, after a request from authorities in those countries for the action, which is designed to protect that list of companies.

The prohibition came after major falls in Italian and Spanish indexes on Thursday.

Short selling is speculation that the price of a stock will go down, and if there are more short sellers than buyers, the price will be pushed down.

Firms including football clubs Lazio and Juventus were on the list, as well as luxury car manufacturer Ferrari.

    Market bounce

Stock market volatility has been very high, with investors deeply concerned about the economic effects of coronavirus.

In early trading on Friday, the London markets rose more than 3%, and Spain’s Ibex 35 rose more than 6%.

The FTSE MIB, the benchmark index for Milan’s Borsa Italiana, climbed more than 3% after a 16% fall on Thursday.

The European markets followed Asian exchanges in ticking up.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was down by more than 10% in early trading before regaining some ground to end about 6% lower.

Australia’s benchmark ASX 200 saw its biggest trading swing on record as it reversed a loss of 8.1% to end the day 4.4% higher.

Trading in India’s Nifty 50 stock index was halted for 45 minutes on Friday morning after it fell 10% and hit a “circuit-breaker” and bounced back into positive territory once trading resumed.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong closed down more than 1%, and China’s Shanghai Composite was 1.2% lower, both off their session lows.

“There is a sense of fear and panic,” said James Tao, an analyst at stockbroker Commsec in Sydney.”It’s one of those situations where there is so much uncertainty that no-one quite knows how to respond… if it’s fight or flight, many people are choosing flight at the moment,” he added.

Friday’s moves follow steep losses in the US and Europe on Thursday, which gathered pace after US President Donald Trump spooked investors when he restricted travel from Europe, and the European Central Bank (ECB) disappointed markets by holding back on rate cuts.

Benchmark indexes on Wall Street and in the City of London saw their steepest daily falls since so-called Black Monday in 1987. In France and Germany, indexes lost more than 12%.

Those declines came despite actions by the Federal Reserve and ECB to support the market.

Losses on European indexes accelerated after the eurozone’s central bank failed to cut interest rates, although it did pledge fresh stimulus measures.

The New York branch of the Federal Reserve said it was pumping $1.5 trillion to ease strains in the debt markets, offering increased overnight loans to banks and expanding the kinds of assets it will buy to keep firms lending.

The announcement, which came after European markets had closed, briefly sent shares higher, but they dropped back by the end of the day. Last week the US central bank cut rates, followed on Wednesday by the Bank of England.

Why should I care if stock markets fall?

Many people’s initial reaction to “the markets” is that they are not directly affected, because they do not invest money.

Yet there are millions of people with a pension – either private or through work – who will see their savings (in what is known as a defined contribution pension) invested by pension schemes. The value of their savings pot is influenced by the performance of these investments.

So big rises or falls can affect your pension, but the advice is to remember that pension savings, like any investments, are usually a long-term bet.

  • GCAA staff threaten to withdraw services

The Union and Professional Associations within the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) have threatened to withdraw some services which are critical to aviation safety from Monday, March 17, 2020.

“The Union and Professional Associations within the GCAA wish to notify airlines and passengers travelling by air and the public of possible disruption to flight operations within the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).”

The notification was in statement signed by William Amoako, Michel Kaamekpor, Patrick Amoah Sarfo, Local Divisional Union, Edem Sabah, Ghana Air Traffic Controllers Association, Mr F.O. Opoku, Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association, Senam Atadja, Aviation Safety Inspectors Association of Ghana, Gideon A. Adjei, Ghana Aeronautical Information Services Association, Veronica Ama Badu, Senior Staff Association and Nicholas Nyeduala, Ghana Civil Aviation Electrical Staff Association and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

It said: “On February 20, 2020, we held a News conference at which we called for the immediate removal of the Board Chairman of GCAA, Air Cdre.
Rexford G.M. Acquah (rtd), whose incessant interference, among others, in the day-to-day operations of the Authority, including; the issuance of threats to management and staff over internal administrative matters such as the hiring and promotion of staff, had reached alarming proportions.

“We also demanded a cessation of all activities on the two lands belonging to GCAA, a 60-acre land located in La Wireless, and over 600-acre land in Nkwantanan, both in Accra.”

The statement said following the conference, the Minister for Aviation, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda and the Director-General of the State interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Mr. Asamoah Boateng, held a meeting with the Union, Professional Associations and staff of GCAA on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.

“Sadly, a pledge by the Aviation Minister and the Director-General of SIGA to resolve the issues has not materialized as the Board Chairman remains at post, and construction works, which incidentally severed one of our fibre optic cables and adversely impacted our communication System for hours on the day we met the two leaders, are in full force,” the statement said.

It said: “Additionally, we do not have access to critical aviation equipment on the land, as most entrances have been either dug or blocked, a development that directly places the crucially important services we provide under serious threat.”

The statement said: “As a result of these issues, this course of action has become necessary in order to safeguard the safety of flights within the Accra FIR.

The taking over of lands earmarked for aviation purposes for private use is not only unacceptable, but also dangerous for the aviation industry and the country as a whole.

“This means that we may not get access to deployed technological infrastructure, on which we depend and this potentially renders us incapable of providing the services that the State has mandated us to offer.”

The statement said safety was the bedrock of aviation and that “we will not compromise on any situation that negatively impacts the industry.

“We deeply regret the inconveniences that might arise from the withdrawal of these vital services, but in the interest of safety. We must protect current installations and make provisions for upcoming ones”.

  • Trump declares national emergency — and denies responsibility for coronavirus testing failures

President Donald Trump said Friday he was declaring a national emergency — “two very big words” — to free up $50 billion in federal resources to combat coronavirus even as he refused to take personal responsibility for administration failures early in the outbreak.

The announcement was part of a raft of new measures Trump hopes can bring a roiling health crisis under control after a week of market seesaws and major disruptions to everyday life.

As he sought to project an air of competence, Trump denied there were missteps that some health experts say have aggravated the crisis.

“I don’t take responsibility at all,” he said, insisting problems that led to slow test-kit distribution were the fault of previous administrations. “We were given a set of circumstances and we were given rules, regulations and specifications from a different time.”

Speaking during an afternoon Rose Garden event, Trump gathered American retail executives to announce they were donating resources to institute drive-through testing at locations across the country, collected on a new online portal that he said would available on Sunday evening.

Later Friday evening, however, the companies indicated they had few details on how many tests they could offer or when the test kits would be available. And Google — the company Trump said was developing the online platform – said it was not publishing a national-scale website; a health-based subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is launching a small-scale website to begin triaging California-based patients only.

Trump went on to say he was allowing his health secretary to bypass certain regulations to provide more flexibility to doctors and hospitals responding to the outbreak.

And he announced he was waiving interest on student loans and purchasing more crude oil for the US strategic reserve to fill it “right to the top.”

After a widely derided prime-time address on Wednesday that preceded a historic plunge in stocks, Trump faced pressure to demonstrate a handle on the crisis. Unlike that address, which framed the virus as a foreign threat, Friday’s statement pointed to a full-blown domestic crisis requiring massive federal resources.

He said the emergency action would “unleash the full power of the federal government” and called on Americans to band together in a time of national strain.

“Through a very collective action and shared sacrifice, national determination, we will overcome the threat of the virus,” he said.

But Trump’s own words at times belied a sense of political unity. He blamed Democrats for not bending enough in negotiations over a legislative package to combat coronavirus and he accused past administrations — misleadingly — of hampering his ability to confront the virus.

The delays in testing, however, have come under Trump’s watch and even Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease specialist, said this week the situation amounted to a “failing.”

Trump on Friday also claimed to lack any knowledge that a pandemic control group within his own National Security Council was disbanded under his watch, calling a question on the topic “nasty.”

“I don’t know anything about it,” he said. “When you say ‘me,’ I didn’t do it.”

The National Security Council’s global health directorate was folded into other areas of the council in 2018.

Even as he was announcing a scaling up of testing capacity for coronavirus, the President said Friday he did not believe all Americans should rush to be tested.

“We don’t want people to take a test if we feel that they shouldn’t be doing it. And we don’t want everybody running out and taking — only if you have certain symptoms,” he said in the Rose Garden.

One person he did suggest would take a test was himself, saying it was likely he would receive one “fairly soon,” after he recently came into contact with a Brazilian official who later tested positive.

If that encounter startled Trump into taking more protective actions to prevent himself from contracting or spreading the virus, however, it was not in evidence on Friday. During his event Trump shook hands with nearly every retail executive who came to his podium to speak, ceasing only when the final participant offered an elbow bump instead.

“I like that. That’s good,” Trump said.

The President, who began his remarks by giving himself plaudits for his response to the outbreak, still appeared to believe the spread could be limited even as he also suggested it would worsen before eventually improving.

“It could get worse. The next eight weeks are critical,” Trump said. “Some of the doctors say it will wash through, it will flow through. Interesting terms.”

Trump has been under pressure to take more decisive action as the virus begins altering everyday life for nearly every American.

On Thursday, CNN reported that the President had decided to make the emergency declaration but that it was undergoing legal review at the White House.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, spoke to Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday and requested that the Trump administration declare an emergency to provide vital assistance to states such as Inslee’s that are on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis, a Washington state official told CNN.

The official told CNN they are “hopeful that (Friday’s) announcement will provide the kinds of assistance that the governor requested.”

White House aides have been weighing the move for the past several days as a way to provide more resources for combating the coronavirus outbreak. Trump has also been debating whether to support a legislative package to combat the outbreak negotiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and his treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Trump signaled in the Rose Garden that he does not currently support the House Democrats’ coronavirus bill, which would — among other things — provide paid leave to Americans who can’t go to work during the pandemic.

“We just don’t think they’re giving enough. We don’t think the Democrats are giving enough,” he said.

The emergency declaration would free up funding and allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency to head certain aspects of the outbreak response.

Earlier this week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, in conjunction with Democratic Sens. Patty Murray of Washington state and Gary Peters of Michigan, sent a letter asking Trump to “immediately” consider disaster declaration requests for the coronavirus.

  • 37 Die of kidney disease in north; Patients plead for its inclusion in NHIS

Thirty-seven people died last year from kidney diseases at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) mainly due to their inability to afford dialysis.

A senior nurse at the Renal Dialysis Unit of the TTH, Mr Awal Issahaku, told the Daily Graphic that the unit also diagnosed 78 patients of kidney diseases but they could not initiate dialysis due to the lack of financial support to pay for the treatment.

However, the unit was able to help 40 patients to recover from kidney-related diseases last year.

Dialysis is the main treatment for kidney-related diseases. It costs between GH¢300 and GH¢350 for a session of dialysis, which has to be performed thrice a week.

Mr Issahaku spoke to the Daily Graphic during a health screening exercise organised by the unit in Tamale last Thursday to commemorate this year’s World Kidney Day.

    Statistics

He indicated that out of the 2,029 cumulative number of sessions carried out by the unit from January to December last year, 322 persons suffered from chronic kidney diseases while 32 had acute kidney disease.

    Regular check-up/congestion

Mr Issahaku explained that there was a high chance of survival for persons suffering from acute kidney diseases as compared to persons suffering from chronic kidney disease.

He, therefore, advised the public to go for regular check-ups for early detection.

He said the unit was the only centre serving the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah and North East regions.

  • Court jails Police officer 20 years for robbery

A Koforidua Circuit Court presided by Mrs Mercy Adei-Kotei, has sentenced a Police officer, lance corporal Seidu Gasty to 20 years imprisonment each on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and to wit robbery and robbery.

The sentences are to be run concurrently.

The accused who was stationed at Akuse Police Station pleaded not guilty to both charges whiles a second accused, Kpornyo Seth Dodzi was acquitted and discharged for lack of evidence.

Assistant State Attorney, Mr Dickson Donkor, prosecuting, told the court that on March 26, 2018 around midnight a group of armed men numbering about eight of which some were armed with pump action guns and others with machetes besieged the Okwenya Shell filling station wearing mask and attacked two people who were at post as night security men.

He said the robbers instructed the security men to lie on the floor but one of them refused to comply with the order and as a result, he was subjected to severe beatings, but during the assault he saw someone who he identified as the accused, approaching where they were being assaulted.

The Prosecution said surprisingly, the accused joined in the assault as the attackers fired a gun to the head of one of the victims and again inflicted cutlass wounds on his forehead and his back.

Mr Dickson said the robbers then tied the victims on both hands and legs with belts and locked them up in a washroom, they then forced the main entrance to the supermarket opened, entered it, broke into an office safe and made away with an amount of GH¢ 37,851,000.

The prosecution said the owner of the filling station who is the complainant got wind of the robbery in the morning, visited the scene, met the victims locked in the washroom in critical conditions and rushed them to the Akuse Government hospital for treatment.

He said one of the victims was later referred to the 37 Military hospital for further treatment and when he was discharged later mentioned to the Police that on the day of the incident, he identified the accused Seidu, a Police officer and Kpornyo Seth Dodzi, a security officer at another filling station among the eight robbers who attacked them.

The Prosecution said on April 22, 2018, Detectives from the Regional CID acting on intelligence arrested these persons whom the victim had mentioned, and a search conducted on the accused led to the retrieval of one Brunei pistol mod 92 together with 2 magazines and three 1.8 mm ammunition, an axe, a knife, three pepper sprays, 10 wrist watches, a pair of handcuffs and a bayonet being possessed without lawful authority.

He said another search conducted in the room of Dodzi, the second accused at Trom, revealed eight BB live cartridges.

He said upon interrogation, the first accused gave conflicting statements about where he got the said guns and ammunitions, but denied committing the crime, whiles the second accused also denied the offence but were later arraigned.

The Assistant State Attorney prayed the court to hand the accused a stiff punishment since he was a serving police officer who should have known better and protect the citizenry rather against such crimes, to serve as deterrent to others.

He also prayed the court to consider how the accused had shown no remorse and disrespect to the court throughout the trial and sentence him accordingly.

  • Speaker directs probe into death of minor during blood donation

Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye has directed three committees in Parliament to investigate a blood donation exercise by the National Blood Service at Adjen-Kotoku Senior High School, in the Ga West Assembly, leading to the death of a minor.

The Committees are the Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Gender and Children, and Health.

Additionally, the Speaker also requested Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Dr Zanetor Agyaman-Rawlings, MP for Klottey Korle and Mr Alex Afenyo Markin, MP for Afutu, to join the three committees and report to the House in two weeks to enable the Attorney General to take over the prosecution of the case.

The directive follows a statement by Mr Afenyo Markin on the Floor of the House to the effect that a blood donation exercise carried out by the National Blood Service (NBS) at the Adjen-Kotoku SHS on February 26, had led to the demise of a student with several others being hospitalised.

Prof Oquaye stressed the need to tighten the law on blood donation by minors to prevent the abuse of children in the system.

He said no teacher or school authority had the right to draw the blood a child without the written consent of his or her parents.

He regretted that, from his readings, the child was actually compelled to give two pints of blood, which he described as exploitative.

Prof Oquaye emphasised the need for public education on the procedures that should be followed during blood donation exercises.

He, therefore, charged the House to consider the issue thoroughly so that the Legislature would be seen as being responsive to the needs of the people who sent them there.

Mr Afenyo Markin, in his statement, noted that on Thursday, March 5, his attention was drawn to the news item on Peace FM concerning a blood donation exercise at the school, leaving several of the students hospitalized.

He said the report indicated that some of the students who were reluctant to participate in the exercise were, however, coerced by school authorities to do so.

He cited for example that the required age for blood donation in Ghana ranges from 17 to 60 years and below 17 years parental/guardian consent must be sought.

Mr Afenyo Markin said the donors are also to take a short physical examination to make sure the donation was not hazardous to their health and expressed surprise that the NBS would supervise blood donation without any precaution.

“The blood donation that took place at the Adjen-Kotoku Senior High School Campus without considering the age factor of the students and also seeking parental consent, has led to the unfortunate demise of this young school boy,” he said.

He, therefore, appealed to the Speaker for urgent investigations into the matter to bring to book all persons found culpable and compensate the bereaved family for the loss.

  • Adzahlis death: Woyome urges govt to resource Sogakope police

Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Volta Caucus have appealed to the Minister of Interior and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to beef up police presence in the South Tongu District.

The appeal followed the murder of Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, Assemblyman for the Sogakope Electoral Area a couple of weeks ago.

They also called for swift and independent investigation into the crime was necessary to bring the perpetrators to book.

Mr Kobena Mensah Woyome, MP for South Tongu, speaking at a news conference in Accra, said justice would be served with the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators to allow calm to return the area.

Mr. Adzahli was murdered during the late hours of Sunday, 1st March 2020. He left behind a wife and two daughters.

He was attacked by unknown people, some of who broke through his door, while others were shooting in order to deter the neighbours from coming out to rescue him.

Mr Woyome urged the Minister and the IGP to consider posting more men to the district and to supply them with the requisite logistics to make policing of the people and foreign nationals more effective.

He said Sogakope was one of the strategic areas in the Volta Region as it was the route for numerous transistors from neighboring Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameron among others.

He said the movements come with huge security challenges, which demanded vigilance on the part of the Police and National Security operatives.

Mr Woyome also ascribed the murder of the Assemblyman to breakdown of security in the district, adding, “This is due to the fact that despite the distress call made to the District Police Commander, it took almost two hours for a patrol team to be dispatched to the scene.”

He said the incident exposed the lack of the necessary resources and high sense of professionalism to fight crime, saying that it was like Ghanaian Police Service feared for their own lives.

He therefore appealed to government to take a critical look at the situation and resource the police to protect the citizens better.

Some of the Volta Caucus MPs present at the conference included; Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, Mr Alexander Hottordze, MP for Central Tongu, Mr Kwasi Bedzra, MP for HO West, Mr Benjamin Kpodo, MP for Ho Central and Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandor, MP for Juaboso.

For his part, Mr Stanley Ogoe, Takoradi Zonal Head of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) mentioned four benefits of the Trust as Superannuation Pension, Invalidity Pension, Survivors Lump Sum and Emigration Benefit.

  • GES sacks Sawla SHS teacher for allegedly raping student

A mathematics tutor at Sawla Senior High School has been dismissed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for allegedly raping one of his female students.

The dismissal of Ernest Ocloo, 34, and popularly known to his colleagues and the students as ‘OC100’, followed a letter by the directorates of education in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District as well as the Savannah Region, recommending the action.

The sack letter was signed by the GES Director-General, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa and copied the sector Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, his deputies and directors, including the affected district and school.

“Mr. Ernest Ocloo has been involved in sexual misconduct with several female students of Sawla Senior High School. He admitted to having sexual intercourse with a female student in the staff common room on the 11th of November, 2019 and claimed it was consensual,” the letter read in part.

According to the letter, Ernest Ocloo is in the habit of harassing female students in the school following his open admission that he took another female student to pass the night in his room in town but denied they had sex.

“By recent practice and precedent, such misconduct is punishable with termination of appointment. Management therefore recommends that the appointment of Mr. Ernest Ocloo should be terminated in line with section 63(iii) (b)(vi) page 86 as contained the code of conduct for Teachers and other workers of the Ghana Education Service…

“It is the expectation of Management that this will act as a deterrence to all staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) that such conduct will not be countenanced,” the letter cautioned.

Meanwhile, checks indicate that apart from the Regional Education Directorate, neither the affected tutor, the school nor District Education Directorate received their copies of the letter.

    Background

Ernest Ocloo reportedly went back to campus after school hours and invited his victim, name withheld, into the school’s staff common room where he allegedly raped her on the floor until she was bleeding.

He then carried her to the girls’ hostel and abandoned her until her colleagues raised the alarm for help before she was sent to the Sawla Clinic for medicals.

The teacher was later arrested by officers from the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Divisional Police Command after some days.

He was put before the Bole Magistrate Court where he was charged for rape and detained in police custody.

He was later granted bail waiting for recommendations from the Attorney-General’s Department for the next line of action.

  • Minister orders dam water of 2012 National Best Farmer tested

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resource, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has inspected two dams suspected to have illegally created with treated water on the farm of Reverend Lemuel Martey, 2012 National Best Farmer.

The Minister after the inspection at the farm located at Afienya- Mataheko Rice city in the Ningo-Prampram District, instructed engineers of the Ghana Water Company Limited to take samples and retest after which investigations and the needed actions would be taken.

She indicated that “we heard they had tapped GWCL treated water for the dams and therefore came to check, some samples had been taken for testing, if there is any criminality, the law will take its full course”.

She said it was a serious issue as according to her using treated water for a dam meant depriving a number of households of treated water.

Engineer Clifford Abdallah Briamah, Managing Director of GWCL, who together with other District Managers accompanied the Minister for the inspection, said previous test by his outfit on the smallest of the dams revealed that it contained chlorine treated water.

Engineer Briamah said “both reserviours are believed to be filled with treated water, the first test we did on the small dam showed traces of our water”

He added that samples would be taken to the Ghana Standard Authority and other independent agencies to also test for confirmation to ensure that the right investigations were done saying “this is not only about GWCL, but a national security issue as they are depriving huge numbers of people from getting the needed treated water”.

At the site, Mr Albert Nortey, elder brother of the 2012 National Best Farmer, who took the entourage round the farm, claimed the dams were created by their mother some 40 years ago adding that it contained rained water.

Mr Nortey said even though December was the last time rain water entered the dam, it was still full because it never dries up saying they have laid pipes and valves to direct all flood water in the farm to the two dams.

The dams, he indicated, were being used for fish farming and rearing of cattle saying most of the farm lands had been sold for residential purpose.

In another development, the GWCL had discovered a client at Gbetsiley in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality who was engage in selling treated water to tankers even though he was using a domestic metre.

Engineer Briamah briefing the media on that said taps of that person had been disconnected pending investigation saying officers of the GWCL would comb the premises to see if they have bypassed the metre as the quantity of water they were consuming was not indicating a commercial nature.

  • Ketu South MCE shrugs off removal demand

Mr. Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South has described demands for his removal from office by a group known as “Nana 4 2020 Youth Club” based in the Municipality as “mischievous” and uncalled for.

He said members of the group calling for his head were on a mission to discredit his person and the gains made by the Ketu South Municipal Assembly to deliver development projects for residents just as was going on across the country and warned their action could arm the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

This was in reaction to a News briefing the group organised on Thursday at Agbozume in the Municipality calling on President Akufo-Addo to sack Mr Agbenorwu over his “misconducts and attitudes.”

The group, made up of old and current polling station executives, electoral area coordinators and constituency executives of the NPP with an objective to increase the electoral fortunes of the Party from 7,000 in 2016 to at least 15,000 in the 2020 general election, said they never benefitted in any way since the MCE assumed office in 2017.

The group among others alleged the MCE and Mr Samuel Doe Haligah, the Constituency Chairman shared opportunities from government among their friends and families.

Mr Agbenorwu however said the allegations were untrue and that he had meetings with members of the Party and explained things to them.

On denial of opportunities, the MCE said he had calls to hand over premix fuel dumps to Party members, which he explained was impossible as there were rules regulating the administration and distribution of the fuel and that chief fishermen at the various landing beaches were to chair the premix fuel committees.

He said his doors were always opened to the grassroots for dialogue to resolve issues, and on how best to work to increase votes for the Party in the Constituency and mentioned that he was already working closely with Mr David Tiahno Quarshie, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the area, for victory in the 2020 general elections.

  • Plans afoot to revamp Kpone landfill site Minister assures residents

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, has said plans are far advanced to give the Kpone landfill site in the Tema Metropolis of the Greater Accra Region a facelift to address the serious health threat it poses to residents.

Addressing some aggrieved youth in the community on Friday, the Minister said his outfit recognizes the enormity of challenges at the dumping site and assured them work would soon commence at the site to address their plights.

“Government is deeply concern about your predicament, but let me assure you that after all the necessary technical works have been concluded, all your challenges will be addressed.

“We have acted on your concerns because contract has already been awarded so what is left is for the contractor to mobilize and start work,” the Minister stressed.

A group calling itself the Kpone Organised Youth for Development in the community have threatened to sue government and the Ministry of Sanitation for taking away their rights as residents to live in harmony with their environment if the Kpone landfill site is not shut down immediately.

The youth therefore embarked on a demonstration on Monday, 9 March 2020 to force government to shut down the site immediately.

Against that backdrop, Mr Ashitey urged the youth not to engage in any self-destructive acts that could disturb the peace of the community following reports that some youth groups were planning a demonstration.

The Minister indicated that steps would be taken to manage the facility properly to avoid any outbreak of an epidemic in the community.

The Tema Sanitary Landfill site, which is the only Engineered Landfill facility in the Greater Accra Region was commissioned in January 2013, and is designed to receive 500 tonnes of refuse per day.

However, due to inadequate number of disposal facilities within the Greater Accra Metropolitan area, close to 1,000 tonnes of refuse is dumped daily at the site.

  • NGO calls for basic information in schools to prevent COVID-19

Africa Education Watch, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has called on the Ghana Education Service to install industrial alcohol-based sanitizers at vantage points within school environments to protect pupils and students against the COVID-19.

It said basic and secondary schools comprise gatherings of about 3,000 students and shall require the basic information and kits in preventing the disease.

Mr Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, said this in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) following the two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country on March 12.

It said this was necessary as the disease spreads mainly through contact thereby making gatherings very risky.

It appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure basic preventive measures through outreach in all schools, and deploying circuit supervisors to inspect compliance of the measures in both private and public schools.

The statement asked that the emergency response numbers for reporting suspected cases of COVID-19 (0509497700, 0558439868) be published in all schools.

It called on corporate Ghana to donate industrial alcohol-based hand sanitizers to the GES to make schools safer.
