  • Ghana, anchor of security in West Africa — German Envoy

The Deputy Ambassador of Germany to Ghana, Mr Hans-Helge Sander, has lauded Ghana as the anchor of security in West Africa.

“Ghana has shown leadership in border security, which is one of the key areas of national security,” he stated.

The Deputy Ambassador made the remark last Wednesday when the Federal Police of Germany presented document fraud detection equipment to the Training Centre of the Document Fraud Expertise Centre (DFEC) of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

The equipment includes an electronic microscope, a modular stereo microscope and a mobile microscope, which will aid in document forensic training of officers of the GIS.

Mr Sander praised the GIS for chalking up a lot of successes in the area of border security, adding: “The German Embassy is happy to support Ghana in the fight against document fraud.”

He advised the service not to renege on building the capacity of officers towards the effective scrutiny of travel documents.

    Gratitude

The Deputy Comptroller-General of Immigration (DCGI) in charge of Finance and Administration, Mrs Judith Dzokoto-Lomoh, who received the items on behalf of the service, expressed gratitude to the German government and the Federal Police for the kind gesture, a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Supt. Michael Amoako-Atta, and issued by the GIS said.

Mrs Dzokoto-Lomoh gave an assurance that the equipment would be put to good use for the benefit of the country, the comity of nations and other stakeholders in the migration sub-sector, stressing: “It will help bolster activities of the training centre.”

She explained why the donation was timely and said it would help arrest the dynamism in migrant crime, noting that the gesture was a demonstration of international cooperation in tackling transnational crime.

“More needs to be done to ensure that neighbouring countries and other sister countries receive only desirable immigrants,” she added.

The DCGI called on the personnel of the service to go beyond detecting fake documents to building strong cases to prosecute and secure the conviction of offenders to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

She advised the personnel to take good care of the equipment, adding: “Most importantly, we should deliver results.”

The Second-in-Command (2IC) at the DFEC, Superintendent of Immigration Mr Frank Apronti, explained that all migration-related crimes, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling and terrorism, were rooted in fraudulent documents.

“These devices will simplify document examination and their mobility will prove very useful in training officers across the borders,” he said.

    Occasion

Present at the presentation ceremony were the DCGI in Charge of Command Post and Operations, Mr Laud Kwesi Affrifah; the Officer in Charge of the DFEC, Chief Superintendent of Immigration (CSI) Mr Kwabena Somuah Amponsah; the Regional Capacity Building Officer, Mr Alistair Rushton; the Police Liaison Officer of the Federal Police of Germany, Dirk Kattlun, and the Visa and Document Advisor at the Federal Police of Germany, Mr Frank Dukpe.

  • Maame Serwaa wears scanty clothes showing her big busts; fans shout in surprise (photos)

Kumawood actress Clara Benson, popularly known as Maame Serwaa, has got tongues wagging on social media after two photos of her dropped online.

In the two photos sighted by YEN.com.gh, Maame Serwaa could be seen dressed in an outfit made from African print.

The scanty-looking dress barely covered Maame Serwaa up and thus revealed parts that should ordinarily have been covered.

The first of the two photos had Serwaa holding her waist and looking straight into the camera while standing. The second had her still standing but crossing her legs.

The two photos were originally shared by Maame Serwaa on her Instagram page with the caption: “let me give you something to talk about.”

But after a lot of bashing from her fans and other social media users, the 19-year-old actress deleted the photos.

Despite Maame Serwaadeleting the photos from her Instagram page, they still found their way onto other pages and blogs.

And the young actress has still received criticism on these pages. For many of the critics, Maame Serwaa was going along the path of her compatriot, Yaa Jackson, who has carved an image of a bad girl with her numerous naughty photos.

  • Over 500 Ghanaians displaced as government embarks on a demolition exercise at Dzorwulu

Several Ghanaians who live within the jurisdiction of several high-tension poles mounted behind Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra have witnessed a demolition of the structures they call home.

The affected persons noted that the exercise started within the wee hours of today.

Briefing the news team on what transpired, they averred that the area was evaded by security personnel and some other persons they believe were land guards without their notice around 3am Friday.

Those affected by the exercise include petty traders, mainly pure water sellers, tailors, bar operators, security personnel, among others.

The squatters further told the news team that some who were unable to secure their belongings had them destroyed by the excavators and security personnel who were at the site.

School children who were with their parents upon the arrival of the news team said they had no choice but to stay home to help pack what their families secured.

Some who called on government to come to their aid, requested for a temporal structure from the Akufo-Addo-led government to lay their heads at night whilst they look for permanent places to rent.

Others, however, threatened not to exercise their franchise in the upcoming general elections adding that they will not hesitate to vote out the Akufo-Addo government for not being there for Ghanaians as promised.

Explaining why they had taken such as a decision in an election year, most averred that the president and his appointees after being voted into power, render them homeless while they use taxpayer’s money to sponsor their lavish lifestyle.

  • Pregnant teen dies after falling from US-Mexico border wall

A pregnant 19-year-old migrant from Guatemala died after trying to climb over a border fence in Texas, authorities said on Thursday. Doctors were not able to save her child.

United States media, quoting a statement from Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that the woman, Miriam Estefany Giron Luna, fell on her back from the top of an 18-foot-high (5.5-metre) span of steel mesh fencing while trying to cross with the child’s father. Giron Luna, who was 30 weeks pregnant, died from her injuries on Tuesday.

Tekandi Paniagua, a Guatemalan consular official based in the state of Texas, told the Washington Post that new restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump have been causing asylum seekers to take more risks and that since October, at least five other Guatemalans have suffered broken bones and other serious injuries after falling from the border wall.

“This is a very worrisome trend,” he told the Washington Post. “People are taking more and more risks, and they’re losing their lives.”

Trump, who has made a crackdown on immigration a central focus of his presidency and his re-election campaign, has put in place measures that have made it increasingly more difficult for migrants to apply for asylum in the US. At least 60,000 asylum seekers have been sent back to Mexico to wait while their cases are processed in the US under the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” programme.

Meanwhile, during the 2019 fiscal year, US authorities took into custody more than 470,000 migrants who arrived amid a record influx of Central Americans who are fleeing violence, poverty and political persecution in their countries.

Those measures have led to a 75 percent drop in border detentions since May, US authorities say, even as the latest figures show a slight uptick in the number of single Mexican adults and unaccompanied minors attempting to cross.

With the addition of taller and more formidable barriers along the border, including more than 135 miles (217km) of new 30-foot-tall (nine-metre) border fencing the Trump administration has installed, smuggling organisations have been using improvised ladders to take migrants over the top.

The tactic requires migrants to cling to the top of the structure, then climb a ladder down the other side or slide down by wrapping their arms and legs around the steel.

According to the Washington Post report, Giron Luna was a social worker and a beauty pageant winner in her hometown in her country’s Quetzaltenango department. She reportedly slipped while trying to descend from the top of the barrier, landing on her back. The woman’s partner, Dilver Israel Diaz Garcia, 26, carried her away from the scene to seek help and encountered US Border Patrol agents, who radioed for an ambulance.

According to the newspaper, doctors in El Paso tried to deliver the child via Caesarean section, and Giron Luna underwent multiple surgeries before dying. Her partner, Diaz Garcia, remains in US Border Patrol custody, where he faces deportation.

  • Coronavirus: Medikal steps out in nose mask amidst fear of the pandemic

Ghana has recorded two cases of Coronavirus and tensions have risen in the country amidst fear of the spread of the pandemic.

In this pursuit, Medikal has stepped out wearing a nose mask. The Ghanaian rapper shared the photo of himself in car, with the mask on and wrote: “Never try touch mandem”.

However, according to the World Health Organisation, wearing the nose mask cannot protect one against the coronavirus. The Organisation advises that a healthy person should wear a mask “only if you are taking care of a person with suspected coronavirus infection.”

The WHO also notes that masks should only be worn “if you are coughing or sneezing.” Also, the WHO states, that should one decide to wear a mask, “you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.”

  • Canadian PM Trudeau in two-week isolation after wife tests positive for coronavirus

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be in isolation for two weeks after his wife, Sophie, tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, and the outbreak prompted the province of Ontario to shutter schools to limit the spread.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau recently returned from London and experienced flu-like symptoms, so she was tested for the coronavirus, the prime minister’s office said earlier on Thursday. The test came back positive, it said in the evening.

“The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days,” an official statement said. Sophie will be in quarantine for 14 days.

“The Prime Minister will continue to fully assume his duties and will address Canadians tomorrow.”

In a personal note, Sophie said she was “experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus,” adding that she “will be back on my feet soon”.

Canada reported 145 new case of the virus, a three-fold gain from a week ago. There has been one death. Seven of Canada’s 10 provinces have recorded infections.

Ontario, the most populous province, reported 17 new cases overnight, a 40% jump. To contain the virus, authorities ordered all schools to close from Saturday to April 5.

Globally, more than 127,000 people have been infected by the sometimes deadly respiratory illness COVID-19.

In a blow to hockey-obsessed Canadians, the National Hockey League suspended its season because of the outbreak, although it said its goal was to resume play “as soon as it is appropriate and prudent,” so teams can compete for the Stanley Cup championship.

With the Canadian dollar at a four-year low against its U.S. counterpart and stocks plunging, the Bank of Canada announced measures to inject liquidity into the market.

Working from home on Thursday, Trudeau spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and joined a special cabinet meeting on the coronavirus by phone, his spokesman said on Twitter.

The Pacific province of British Columbia, north of Washington state, advised against all non-essential foreign travel, including to the United States. Washington is one of the worst-affected states.

Any warning that involves the United States is politically sensitive, given the two countries’ 5,525-mile (8,890-km) shared border and Canada’s overwhelming reliance on bilateral trade.

“This is really important … the evolving situation both in the United States and globally is a risk for all of us,” British Columbia’s provincial chief medical officer, Bonnie Henry, told reporters.

Alberta’s chief medical officer, Deena Hinshaw, banned gatherings of more than 250 people and canceled all international events. Hinshaw also discouraged foreign travel.

Quebec, which has recorded 13 cases, has banned all indoor events with more than 250 people and said people returning from any foreign country should self-isolate for 14 days. Health and education public-sector workers who travel abroad will be required to self-isolate.

Separately, Canadian authorities canceled the JUNO music awards, Canada’s version of the Grammys, and Toronto’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade was suspended.

Ottawa committed C$1 billion ($723 million) on Wednesday toward bolstering the healthcare system and limiting the impact of the virus, while Ontario said on Thursday it had set aside C$100 million in “contingency funding.”

On Thursday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said the public health crisis alone would cost the country “well north of C$10 billion.”

  • ‘It is like Tony Yeboah, it’s a thing of beauty’- Ighalo wonder strike but nobody there to see it

Odion Ighalo’s sensational goal for Manchester United in their 5-0 thrashing of LASK in the Europa League was worthy of a packed house at the Linzer Stadion.

Juggling the ball from right foot to left, the 30-year-old Nigeria forward then cannoned a left-footed shot in off the crossbar from 18 yards.

But instead of the roar of a crowd, all that was audible was was a thud of boot to ball and the clang of the crossbar before he was joined by his team-mates.

It was a sparkling effort unfortunately witnessed live by a smattering of people and not the wider audience it deserved due to the coronavirus outbreak restricting the attendance to just 500.

United’s substitutes even crowded around a screen in their dug out to watch it again. But then would Ighalo have even attempted it at Old Trafford?

Former United midfielder Paul Ince, suggested otherwise on BT Sport, likening it to the sort of potshot seen at training grounds when the pressure is off.

“Maybe he doesn’t do it in front of a full house,” said Ince. “It reminds me of one of those that you do at training. Maybe I’m doing a disservice to him.”

However, fellow studio guest Owen Hargreaves, was a touch more complimentary.

“It is like Tony Yeboah, it’s a thing of beauty,” he said, referencing the Ghanaian’s famous in-off-the-crossbar volley for Leeds in 1995.

“It is one of the best goals he has ever scored.”

  • Asante Kotoko stutter in Ghana Premier League duel against Elmina Sharks

Asante Kotoko missed an opportunity to add three more points to their haul as they were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Elmina Sharks in the Ghana Premier League on Thursday.

With both teams failing to score in the matchweek 14 fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium – Kotoko’s adopted home ground – the Porcupine Warriors and the Nduom Boys picked up a point each, leaving them fourth and fifth, respectively, on the table.

Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu repeated the starting XI of the 1-0 away triumph over Karela United on the previous matchday, a decision which kept controversial striker Songne Yacouba on the bench once again.

In the 11th minute, Augustine Okrah directed a header wide, while Emmanuel Gyamfi’s curler three minutes later similarly missed the target narrowly.

Moments later, Sharks responded at the other end as Kotoko goalkeeper Kwame Baah had to stay alert to collect a header from an in-swinger.

Sharks’ Benjamin Tweneboah then got to the end of another cross but his shot went off target. This was followed by another Sharks attempt as Benjamin Arthur called Baah into action, this time with a shot from the edge of the box.

In the 32nd minute, Kotoko came close as Okrah struck the woodwork from close range.

Moments after his second-half introduction into the game, Yacouba tested Sharks goalkeeper Lord Bawa Martey with a first-touch effort after a corner delivery.

Fourteen minutes to full-time, Baah had to produce a moment of brilliance in a one-on-one situation to prevent the Porcupine Warriors from falling behind.

With no further clear-cut chances, the two teams were forced to settle for a point each as the referee whistled to bring the game to an end after 90 minutes.

  • Partey’s composure and economy underpin Atletico Madrid’s elimination of Liverpool

All of the talk ahead of the Round of 16 second leg between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid was of the famed Anfield atmosphere, and how its hot lights had caused many an opponent to simply melt away.

There was something cocksure, even to the point of arrogance, about Andrew Robertson’s statement after the first leg. “They celebrated like they won the tie after the game, so let’s see,” he said. “They’re coming back to Anfield; we know our fans will be there.”

The idea of Anfield as a living thing, a heaving, breathing dragon perched on the banks of the Mersey, waiting to test the mettle of Diego Simeone’s side and find them wanting, was evidently real enough to make Robertson confident leaving the Metropolitano three weeks ago.

Atletico, however, came ready for the examination on Wednesday night, armed with an impenetrable shield (in goalkeeper Jan Oblak) and a composure that refused to wilt under the pressure, a calmness embodied by midfielder Thomas Partey that meant Los Colchoneros kept their heads where, less than 12 months ago, such seasoned campaigners as Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique had lost theirs.

For all his talk before the second leg he described playing at Anfield as “a dream” there was nothing less than total awareness from Partey on the night, and in a stunning rearguard action that was tinged with more than a little luck, the Ghana international stood out for his economy of touch and movement.

The aim, evidently, was to slow the play down; again and again, cries from Simeone implored his players to take their time and, by extension, the sting out of the game.

When the opportunities, few and far between, came for the visitors to string together some possession, it ultimately fell to Partey smack in the centre of the pitch, swarmed by the Reds’ famed press, to look after the ball and not lose it in dangerous areas.

His calmness in the face of incessant pressure was tremendous. Keeping the ball always close with little caresses, he completed the most dribbles on the night for Atletico, while having the third most touches of the ball and completing the third-highest tally of passes (30, with the second-highest accuracy).

Turning away from pressure, encouraging interplay with measured retention: it sounds simple enough, but in practice it is a daunting brief fraught with danger for a midfielder facing this Liverpool team.

Without possession, as they had to be, Partey was similarly excellent. Five tackles (the best tally on either side in the game) and four interceptions (second-most behind Saul Niguez) encapsulates all he did well, both breaking up play and nipping in to halt Liverpool’s swelling momentum where possible.

    Thomas Partey Atletico Madrid 2019-20

It could not have gone any better if he had dreamt it, and for all that the hosts had enough chances to have won the game thrice over, certainly Simeone’s conception of the game played out, to a significant degree, thanks to the diligence of his Ghanaian bulwark.

This Atletico may not be the vintage version of 2014 to 2016, shorn as it is of the likes of Diego Godin, Juanfran and Gabi. However, even the latter, longstanding captain and leader that he was, would have been proud of what Thomas, ostensibly his replacement in the side, was able to do; how he was able to embody the ethos of the side and lead by example in an arena of myth.

It was a performance to send a message to the rest of Europe this Atletico side, on its day, is still difficult to beat.

It also, more sensationally, sent a message to London club Arsenal, to whom Partey has been linked in recent weeks if they had any doubts whatsoever about his adaptability to the tempo of English football, his showing at Anfield, a ground where the Gunners have not won in eight years, certainly dispels them.

It has been reported in the Spanish press that Mikel Arteta’s side are willing to meet his £42million release clause this summer.

However, if ongoing contract renewal talks between the player and Atletico weren’t enough of an incentive for the Gunners to move quickly, this coming-out performance in front of all of Europe is one that should force Arsenal’s hand even more.

  • Govt officials empowered foreigners to encroach our land – Association International School

Authorities at the Association International School (AIS), are suspecting some officials in the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led government of being behind the construction of the controversial 22-storey building adjacent premises at the Airport Residential area.

In a strong-worded statement issued and signed by Mrs Audrey Doryumu [Headmistress of Association International School], stated that the ongoing construction by KASS Plus Company Limited has negatively affected the school.

She said the construction activities have negatively and heavily impacted the health, services and operations of our school owing to reasons including poor engineering practices.

“We have good reason to believe that these new developments are not merely coincidental. We further reasonably believe that the manner the officials have conducted themselves raises genuine suspicion of harassment of me and my staff and indeed the entire Association International School family due to our avowed goal to seek justice in ensuring that our concerns are addressed and for stoppage of the ongoing damage we are suffering due to the ongoing construction works. Our resolve for all risks posed to us to be addressed cannot be broken…,” she added.

“Should my suspicion be confirmed, this will amount to the unfair use of state and other governmental authorities by connected persons, which is an abuse and the use of state authority against a private citizen who is simply trying to protect her business and ensure that the right thing is being done,” Mrs Doryumu noted.

    Background

The Turkish contractor made the headlines when the Roads Minister stormed the site where the 22-storey structure was being put up, close to the Association International School in the Airport Residential Area, and ordered the arrest of the CEO of the construction company, a certain Abdulkadir Yadigar, who, according to the minister, had put up a barricade on the road which created a traffic logjam.

Meanwhile, the Association International School filed an interim injunction against the Turkish contractor at the centre of the controversial 22-storey building at the Airport Residential area but was dismissed by an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Afua Novisi Aryene.

The court after hearing lawyers of the Association International School, the applicant, and the Kess Plus Construction Limited, respondent, ruled that the applicant has not been able to substantiate its claims of nuisance and other health concerns to warrant the grant of the injunction.

It was the ruling of the court that, the respondent stands to suffer irreparable damages should the application be granted.

The court subsequently dismissed the application.

  • DVLA must communicate timelines on revoking licences of recalcitrant drivers – BPS

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) is demanding timelines from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) on their plan to revoke licences of recalcitrant drivers in the country.

The authority, in January this year hinted of the move indicating that drivers who are caught repeatedly breaking road traffic codes will soon have their licences suspended.

This was however aimed at reducing carnages on our roads.

So far, close to 400 people have been killed in road accidents since the year began, with the Kintampo-Tamale incident on Monday being the latest.

Speaking on Starr FM today, the Executive Director of the Bureau, Nana Yaw Akwada said the Authority must come out with a specific time frame to enforce measures to curb the menace of road accidents in the country.

“It is a delayed move but still welcomed. Because this suggestion was made as far back in 2017 and we raised submissions in the first quarter in 2019 for us to go this full circle before they realize the need to start cracking. DVLA should give us some timelines, they should give us who and who they are engaging”.

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) on its part has called on all stakeholders actively involved in reducing carnages on our roads.

On March 9, 2020, a horrific accident occurred on the Kintampo-Tamale highway which claimed 30 lives and burning 27 persons beyond recognition.

The accident involved two buses, a Yutong bus and Benz Sprinter. The Yutong bus reportedly veered off its lane and collided with the sprinter bus causing both vehicles to glow up in flames.

Meanwhile, the rampant accident cases recorded on the Kintampo stretch has been attributed to overspeeding and human error on the path of road users.

  • Foot soldiers deserve roles in Ghana politics – Former National Security Minister

A former National Security Coordinator, Francis Kwaku Poku, has advocated for the express acknowledgement of foot soldiers in the body politic of Ghana.

The man who served as a cabinet minister in charge of national security in the Kufuor administration said Ghanaians have turned a blind eye on the very important role foot soldiers play in party politics in Ghana.

“We should not pretend that they do not exist,” he insisted.

Mr Kwaku Poku expressed these sentiments while giving his remarks as Chairman of a public lecture organized by Media General on Thursday, March 12.

The lecture, addressed by Dr Ernest Kofi Abotsi, was centred around the violence that marred the January 31, 2019 by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Mr Kwaku Poku said foot soldiers do most of the dirty works for political parties and they have come to stay.

But he said they must be controlled so that their activities do not get out of hand.

“They are not animals that you use as you wish,” he noted, asking politicians to treat them as Ghanaians first and foremost.

“They deserve a role in the political process but they should be properly controlled [and] properly registered.”

He said it is when foot soldiers are not acknowledged that they metamorphose into vigilantes, who have become monsters eating deeply into the fabric of party politics in Ghana.

Google’s parent company Alphabet has asked its North American staff to work from home to reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus.

It has now expanded that request to all of its almost 100,000 workers across 11 offices in the US and Canada.

  • 80% of sexual and gender-based violence perpetrated by men Department of Gender

The Director of the Department of Gender in the Central Region, Madam Thywill Eyra Kpe, has disclosed that it is very good to engage men and boys in discussions concerning sexual and gender-based violence since about 80% of the perpetrators are men.

As parts of efforts to sensitize adolescents, especially boys, on their sexual reproductive health, Mrs Thywill Kpe revealed in an interview at Ekumfi in the Central Region that according to statistics from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), majority of sexual and gender-based violence are caused by men, hence it is prudent that men are included in such advocacy activities as partners.

This move is aimed at finding a total and wholistic end to sexual and gender-based violence.

“Last year, as part of moves to address issues of adolescent girls particularly teenage pregnancy, adolescent reproductive issues and teenage pregnancy, we realized it is important to also engage the men and the boys.”

“From the data in our quarters, DOVVSU, we realized that about 80% of the perpetrators of domestic violence are men, whiles 80% of victims are also women.”

“Therefore, if we want to address the issue of sexual and gender-based violence, it is important that we engage the men as partners to help in the fight against gender-based violence” she noted.

Sex is an activity involving both sexes, then it is important boys are also spoken to about their sexual and reproductive health so they become informed about their sexual activities and its repercussions.

According to her, she stated that the Ghana Health Service data in 2017, about 19% of persons who impregnate these adolescent girls are boys who graduated from the basic school or just completed Junior High School.

This, therefore, means that leaving them out of the equation is not prudent if indeed the Central Region wants to really eradicate or reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy in the region drastically.

“When it comes to sex, it is both sides. For instance, if you look at the Ghana Health Service data in 2017, it shows you that about 19% of those who impregnate these girls in the region are boys who have just completed Junior High School and boys between the ages of 10 and 19 years. So, we realized that it was important we engaged these group of boys as part of our advocacy work to end sexual and gender-based violence and promote good adolescent sexual and reproductive health practices that can help us reduce teenage pregnancy in the Central Region” she stated.

The gender ministry is really fighting hard to reduce drastically teenage pregnancy and all sorts of gender-based violence.

As a result, the Department of Gender in the Central Region, led by the Director, Madam Thywill Eyra Kpe has been organizing series of capacity building and empowerment workshops for both boys, girls, men and women.

So far about 100 men have been selected from six districts in the region and have been empowered to lead a fearless campaign to drastically reduce the spate of sexual and gender-based violence rearing up its ugly head in the region.
