  • First Lady cuts sod for Anafo market

The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has cut sod for the construction of the Anafo Market in the Cape Coast South Constituency.

The project, which is funded by the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), is being implemented under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) of the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives.

Speaking at the event, CEO of CODA, Jerry Ahmed Shaib thanked President Akufo-Addo for allocating one million dollars to each constituency for special development projects such as the construction of the market. He also thanked traditional leaders of the area for warmly receiving the First Lady and supporting the project.

Mr Shaib also announced the establishment of the CODA Credit Union to provide fisherfolk, petty traders, mechanics, commercial drivers and other small-scale businesses in the informal sector with credit facilities to empower them to grow their businesses. This intervention is expected to empower these traders and business persons to be independent to cater for their families and boost their businesses. CODA has also procured 1,300 outboard motors for distribution to fishermen to boost their trade.

After completion, the market will be managed by the Cape Coast South Municipal Assembly.

The sodcutting was marked by a colourful event with the crème-de-la-crème of Cape Coast South Constituency in attendance. Among the dignitaries were the Municipal Chief Executive for Cape Coast South Municipal Assembly, Ernest Arthur, Nana Kwesi Attah, Paramount Chief of Cape Coast traditional area, other traditional and religious leaders, as well as representatives of community based organisations.

  • Call EC boss to order – Oscar Doe to religious organizations

Chairman of Doscar Group Holdings, HRH Oscar Yao Doe has urged religious and civil society organizations in Ghana to immediately call the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mansa to order.

He accused the EC boss of acting against public trust for failing to build a consensus among political parties about whether to compile a new voter register or maintain the existing one.

According to him, her actions in office have become a major threat to the country’s democracy and peace. He also said that President Akufo-Addo has failed Ghanaians for sticking with Mansa as the Electoral Commissioner, while suggesting that the selection of subsequent ECs must be led by civil society organizations, and such appointment must receive 2/3 majority of the parliament.

    Read his full statement below.

A Country full of empty-headed, needy, greedy grabbers and poor-minded degree holders with “zero love” for country. Their only focus is to amass wealth at the expense of the peaceful co-existence of Ghanaians.

Based on her own behaviour and lack of ability to build a consensus among political parties about whether to compile a new voter register or maintain the existing one, Madam Jean Mensa has acted “against public trust”. Therefore, history shall consider her as the “worst” Electoral Commissioner since the 4th Republic from 1992.

Jean Mansa’s actions through multiple dubious procurement discrepancies are the biggest threats to our democracy and peace. It’s about time for our religious and civil society organisations to call her out immediately before it’s too late. Wrong is wrong. It’s obvious her intentions are not “PURE”.

Leaders will come and go, but we cannot afford a situation where few individuals act on selfish interests to damage the unity of Ghana.

Again, President Akufo-Addo has failed Ghanaians. He is acting divisively, dangerously, and incompetently with the aim of hanging on to power with narrow-mindedness. He doesn’t care about the consequences.

  • UN petitions IGP over imposter affiliate groups in Ghana

The United Nations is requesting the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to deal with what it describes as identity theft by some unscrupulous organisations operating in Ghana under the pretext of being affiliated to the world body.

According to the UN, it has evidence of fraudulent activities being perpetrated by two institutions including a group calling itself the United Nations youth who have for some time now posited as one of their agencies and appointing resident representatives.

At a high-powered delegation meeting in Accra between officials of the foreign affairs ministry and all heads of UN organisations in Ghana, one of the scam letters with a purported endorsement from former minister for foreign affairs Hannah Tetteh was tendered as part of illegal dealings of the group.

However, UN Resident Coordinator Sylvia Lopez-Ekra reveals that a notice has been sent to the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to deal with the matter.

“We have no relationship with them, two different groups actually, so we are getting concerned that the name of the UN is being abused and of course it can lead to money being lost to the victims. it can lead to identity theft so we would kingly request the support of the ministry in helping to deal with this. We have sent it to the national security and also to the Inspector General of Police,” said Ms Lopez-Ekra.

Meanwhile, the deputy foreign affairs minister, Charles Owiredu, who was also present at the meeting assured the delegation that the matter would be appropriately dealt with while indicating that further consultations will be held with the UN in accrediting some international organisations or groupings.

  • COVID-19: Port Health intensifies screening at Aflao Border

Officials of Port Health Authority at the Aflao-Lome border have intensified screening of travellers to prevent Coronavirus (COVID-19) from entering Ghana after Togo recorded its first case last week.

The officials were seen screening travellers at both arrival and departure routes to neighbouring Togo with Thermal Walkthrough Thermometers when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Aflao border.

The GNA observed that apart from the intensive screening, personnel of the Authority were also sensitising travellers and hawkers on the virus and safety measures.

It was also observed that the officers were using only four Thermal Walkthrough Thermometers, with some travellers complaining about having to wait in long queues for long periods.

As a result, a few travellers were spotted using some detours on the blindsides of Port Health officials to beat the waiting time, claiming they were safe.

One traveller was heard screaming, “I don’t have any Coronavirus so don’t put that machine on my head, I’m healthy, nothing is wrong with me, I’ve never been to China,” as he moved towards Togo.

As of March 9, more than 111,000 people have been infected with the virus in more than 80 countries, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

It said there were over 3,800 deaths globally. Just over 3,000 of those deaths occurred in mainland China with 62,000 people having recovered from the coronavirus.

Common signs of infection of COVID 19 include; respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking of meat and eggs.

It is also recommended that people avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

Officials of Port Health Authority at the border including an inspection team from Accra declined to speak to the media and only said, “We have put the necessary measures in place to deal with the situation.”

  • Harvey Weinstein jailed for 23 years in rape trial

Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.

He was found guilty in a trial in New York last month, a dramatic fall from grace for one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures.

The 67-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday in a wheelchair.

His lawyers had appealed for leniency, saying even the minimum sentence of five years could be a “life sentence”.

But prosecutors argued Weinstein should be given the maximum possible sentence given his “lifetime of abuse” towards women and “lack of remorse” for his actions.

Weinstein addressed the court for the first time on Wednesday, saying he had “deep remorse” but described him and other men as “totally confused” by events in comments seen as critical to the #MeToo movement.

Dozens of women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct, including rape, against Weinstein since October 2017.

He has consistently denied wrongdoing and these were the first charges to make it to trial.

Weinstein still faces further criminal charges, for rape and sexual assault, in Los Angeles.

His lawyers have vowed to appeal against his conviction.

    What was he convicted of?

Weinstein was found guilty of committing a first-degree criminal sexual act against production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and of the third-degree rape of aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013.

New York jurors acquitted him of the most serious charges, of predatory sexual assault, which could have seen him given an even longer jail term.

All six women who testified against him during his trial sat together on Wednesday as he was sentenced and told to register as a sex offender.

The two women he was convicted of assaulting both read out victim impact statements in court.

“It scarred me deeply, mentally and emotionally,” Ms Haley, who is also known as Mimi Haleyi, said of the assault where Weinstein forced oral sex on her. “What he did not only stripped me of my dignity as a human being and a woman, but it crushed my confidence.”

Ms Mann criticised Weinstein’s lawyers for trying to “twist the truth” during the trial, and said she hoped for a future where “we no longer have to worry about monsters hiding in our closet”.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr thanked the court for the tough sentence, saying it put “predators and abusive partners” elsewhere in society “on notice”.

“Harvey Weinstein deployed nothing less than an army of spies to keep them silent. But they refused to be silent, and they were heard,” he said of the women who testified. “Their words took down a predator and put him behind bars, and gave hope to survivors of sexual violence all across the world.”

The US Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) praised the significant prison term Weinstein was given.

“This case – and the national reckoning about the pervasiveness of sexual violence it sparked – will have a lasting legacy,” president Scott Berkowitz said in a statement. “We hope that survivors will feel encouraged to come forward, knowing that it can truly make a difference in bringing perpetrators to justice.”

  • Suspected coronavirus case at Abura Dunkwa tests negative – Regional Minister

A suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) case at the Abura-Dunkwa hospital in the Central Region has tested negative, the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has revealed.

According to the Minister, the case involved a white couple who returned to Ghana a few days ago.

Speaking during a radio programme on Accra based Peace FM Wednesday morning and monitored by Graphic Online, Mr Duncan said it involved a lady who reported sick to the Abura-Dunkwa hospital with another person.

When the medical personnel screened her, the symptoms fitted the profile of the virus and also had a very high temperature.

Mr Duncan said whilst screening her she even collapsed and so all the people she had been in contact with within the period were immediately traced and isolated.

He said the medical personnel reported to him that a blood sample was taken from her and sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on Tuesday and turned out to be negative.

Mr Duncan was speaking Wednesday morning as a studio panel member on the Kokrokoo morning show hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi.

  • Salaga market project to be completed by December 2020 AMA boss assures

The woes of market women who once traded within the Salaga Market in Accra may soon come to an end as the promised reconstruction works at the old site are scheduled for completion this December.

This is according to the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah.

The Salaga Market has been in the news for having been abandoned, three years after structures there were demolished. A groundbreaking ceremony had already been held by the previous Mahama-led government for refurbishment works to begin.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Accra Mayor among other things attributed the delay in undertaking the project on procurement challenges.

“What we have done currently is that we have engaged the Coastal Development Authority and they have decided to put their money into the reconstruction. The contract has already been awarded but unfortunately, the PPA delayed a bit. However, we have begun clearing the site for the reconstruction. We are anticipating that the project will be done by the end of the year. That is the assurance I have gotten from the contractor.”

Three years after sod-cutting, the Salaga market has seen no facelift.

The market is still in a dilapidated state and the traders there are calling on the government to do something about it.

Traders have been forced to operate along the streets of the old market. They are thus appealing for construction to begin, as the current state of affairs is creating a lot of inconveniences which affect their business.

This has created heavy vehicular traffic with gutters surrounding the market getting choked with the slightest downpour.

Some portions of the ruins at the old site are being occupied by churches, while others are serving as a hideout for drug peddlers and other recalcitrant individuals.

Initially, the agreement towards the construction of the ultra-modern Salaga Market was fraught with conflict of interest and diverse challenges that barred the AMA from embarking on the project.

The Salaga Market is one of the major markets within the Accra Metropolis which accommodates over 400 traders, and it is estimated that the proposed ultra-modern market would accommodate about a thousand traders upon completion.

This is expected to increase the revenue generation base of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

  • Coronavirus cases reach over 100 across Africa

South Africa on Wednesday reported six new confirmed cases of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus all involving people who had travelled to Europe.

Thirteen people have now tested positive in South Africa, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

The new cases are a 33-year-old woman who had been in Italy; a 34-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman who had been in Germany.

Others are a 57-year-old man who had been in Austria and Italy; a 40-year-old man who had been in Portugal; and a 36-year-old man who had been in multiple countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey.

“Some of these patients are already in hospital, while some, specifically those who are asymptomatic, are in self-quarantine,” the institute said in a statement.

Experts consider Africa to be at high risk due to its close links with China the epicentre of the coronavirus epidemic and the weak health systems that many African countries have.

But outbreaks have been rather limited on the continent so far.

More than 110,000 people have been infected worldwide so far.

By Tuesday, the World Health Organisation had recorded 99 confirmed Covid-19 cases in nine African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia.

Authorities in Burkina Faso and Congo have also announced their first confirmed cases, all involving people who had been in Europe.

Egypt and Algeria have had the highest number of cases. Only one death has been reported so far, in Egypt.

  • Wuhan rescue plane flies from South Africa

A plane has left South Africa headed to China’s coronavirus epicentre of Wuhan to repatriate more than 120 citizens stranded there since the outbreak began in January.

“Go with speed, with God and bring our children back home,” President Cyril Ramaphosa reportedly told the dozens of military staff and health officials boarding the flight at Johannesburg’s main airport on Tuesday night.

The plane is due to stop over in the Philippines first to refuel, before heading to China.

It is scheduled to leave China on Friday and land in South Africa later that day.

The mission will cost almost $1.6m (£1.2m), according to a letter President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote to parliament.

A total of 122 South Africans are to be repatriated, authorities say. That’s fewer than the 180 people who originally said they wanted to be brought back.

Those who dropped out decided to “stay on at their respective commitments”, according to a government statement.

None of the people being repatriated have showed any signs of coronavirus infection, South African authorities said in a statement, but they will all be subject to a 21-day quarantine period.

South Africa currently has seven confirmed cases of the virus.

  • Kenya: Teenage pregnancies on the rise as report calls for stern action

Kenya is facing a serious teenage pregnancy crisis according to a report released by a government agency Monday.

One in five girls aged between 15 and 19 are pregnant according to the National Council on Population and Development (NCPD) report titled Teenage Pregnancy Situation in Kenya and that was released in a Nairobi hotel.

Narok County leads the list of shame with 40 percent of girls (two in every five) pregnant followed by Homa Bay (33 per cent), West Pokot (29 per cent), Tana River and Nyamira (28 per cent).

The Narok figures are double the national average of one in every five girls being expectant.

    Antenatal clinic

At six per cent, Murang’a County has the lowest rates followed by Nyeri (seven percent), Embu (eight percent), Elgeyo Marakwet (nine percent) and Nyandarua (10 percent).

The worrying situation is an indication of trends having remained largely unchanged despite efforts by the government, child rights activists and non-governmental organisations to reduce the incidence of minors becoming pregnant.

In 2018, the National Aids Control Council reported that 430,825 teens aged between 10-19 attended at least one antenatal clinic session in a public health facility.

In 2019, the figure dropped considerably to 379,573 but serious concerns remain over the relatively high numbers of minors engaging in unprotected sex with young and old men.

A total of 20,828 teenagers aged between 10 and 14 years were recorded as having visited health facilities for antenatal care.

Among the expectant teenagers aged between 10 and 14 years, Nairobi led with 2,432, followed by Nakuru with 1,748, Kajiado (1,523), Kericho (1,006), Homa Bay (957) and Garissa (901).

    Fistula

On the other hand, only 14 teenagers from Isiolo County were pregnant, as compared to Lamu (22), (Embu (25), Kilifi (53), and Elgeyo Marakwet (59).

The scenario rapidly shifted as the report looked at older girls, with Nairobi recording 24,106 pregnant girls aged between 15 and 19 years. Nakuru was next with 17,019 followed by Meru (15,353), Narok (14,052), Bungoma (13,920), Kiambu (13,128) and Trans Nzoia (11,687).

Counties with the lowest number for pregnant teens aged between 15 and 19 were Lamu (1,285), Embu (2,126), Wajir (2,684), Isiolo (2,851) and Nyeri (2,508). Presenting the figures, assistant director of population Lucy Kimondo said many of the girls ended up severely depressed with some committing suicide.

“There is also a very high rate of fistula among these girls. Imagine a 10-year-old girl trying to push a baby during birth,” she said.

    Sexual violence

Ms Kimondo identified sexual violence as major driver for the crisis, saying a girl younger than 18 cannot consent to sex.

The Sexual Offences Act prohibits adults from engaging in sex with minors, with jail terms ranging from life to 15 years for those found guilty of the offence. The vice has however remained rampant in the country, with a low conviction rate in courts for most suspects charged with sexually violating minors.

According to the report, some of the causes of teenage pregnancy in the country include poverty, peer influence, drug abuse, lack of youth-friendly services in health facilities, early marriage, rape and defilement.

The NCPD blamed poor parenting and an education system that has ignored the need to make teenagers aware of their sexuality. Among the reasons listed in the report are “inadequate parental and curriculum guidance”.

    Suicide

The document that paints a worrying picture of a country that prides itself as having made strides in education, economic growth, technology and democratic governance still grappling with the prospect of its young citizens becoming parents before completing their education.

The NCPD lists some of the consequences of teenage pregnancy as depression, suicide, abortion, interrupted schooling, poor maternal health, morbidity and death, birth-related complications like fistula, and early marriages.

“An estimated 26 per cent of teenagers in poor households are likely to fall pregnant compared to 10 per cent of their peers in wealthier households,” the document says.

A 2016 report by the Faith to Action Network in Kilifi County identified “cultural practices such as dances and funeral attendance where the girls have no parental presence as making them susceptible to early sexual debut”.

“Poverty drives young girls to work as sex entertainers to earn a living … including food, clothing and electronics, leading to pregnancies,” the Kilifi study said.

  • MTTD to deploy accident prevention squad

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service says it will deploy accident prevention squad to accident-prone areas to curb the menace following some fatal accidents in the country.

The latest accident which occurred on the Kintampo-Tamale highway on Monday dawn, March 9, 2020, claimed 30 lives with 27 of them burnt beyond recognition.

In response to this, the head of Education Research and Training of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng in an interview on Starr FM today said the department is going to deploy its accident prevention squad on various roads in the country to conduct inspections.

”For us what is also important is that we go beyond this and ensure that strategically we will deploy our accident prevention squad to be on the highway particularly during the day in certain instances stop such vehicles, inspect what we need to inspect on those vehicles and allow the drivers to proceed. In that way, the drivers will have alighted, stretched a bit and would have been asked certain questions, even if the driver is feeling a bit sleepy, would have gotten over it”.

Superintendent Alexander Obeng also said there is a need for a review in registering and regulating the work to drivers to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.

”These are things we will also do to assist, however, the best approach is to have an institutional framework that will also assist for transport operators to regulate and also to have certain devices in such vehicles to support such enforcement,” he added.

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) on its part has called for an all hands on deck approach in reducing carnages on our roads.

Meanwhile, statistics proved that in January 2020 over 200 people have lost their lives as a result of road accidents in the country.

  • NPP primaries: Executives demand Philip Addisons reinstatement

Over four hundred polling station executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Akropong Constituency of the Eastern Region are to petition the National Executives of the party over the disqualification of Philip Addison and William Agyei Twumasi from the parliamentary primaries.

Their disqualification has left the incumbent Member of Parliament, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah as the sole runner in the upcoming primaries.

The two were part of 15 aspirants disqualified out of the 79 vetted in the Eastern Region.

Addressing the media after a march on the streets of Akropong Wednesday, March 11, 2020, the aggrieved delegates and supporters said the incumbent MP has become unpopular within the party and among the electorate at large and therefore would be suicidal for the NPP to impose her on the constituency.

The press conference addressed by Dr. Eric Danquah called on the National Vetting Committee to allow all three aspirants to contest the primaries. They contended that Mr. Addison has been contributing immensely to the party in the constituency describing as unturnable claims that he has not natured the party well.

They warn that the failure to reverse the decision of the vetting committee will lead to apathy in 2020.

“It is with deep regret that we the delegates who have signed this petition say to your office that if you do not as soon as possible consider our petition by reverting this dangerous decision to disqualify Mr.Philip Addison, we would be left with little option, but we shall determine which person should represent us in the next four years from this constituency. We shall only be available to work hard for the party only if there is a fair contest”.

However, in a swift rebuttal, the Constituency Organizer Emmanuel Appienti has discredited the signatories on the petition claiming majority were secured through deception.

He accused the popular lawyer of attempts to cause confusion in the constituency akin to what happened at Korle Klottey in Accra in 2016 leading to the defeat of the party in the constituency.

  • Second patient cured of HIV, say doctors

A man from London has become the second person in the world to be cured of HIV, doctors say.

Adam Castillejo is still free of the virus more than 30 months after stopping anti-retroviral therapy.

He was not cured by the HIV drugs, however, but by a stem-cell treatment he received for a cancer he also had,the Lancet HIV journal reports.

The donors of those stem cells have an uncommon gene that gives them, and now Mr Castillejo, protection against HIV.

In 2011, Timothy Brown, the “Berlin Patient” became the first person reported as cured of HIV, three and half years after having similar treatment.

Stem-cell transplants appear to stop the virus being able to replicate inside the body by replacing the patient’s own immune cells with donor ones that resist HIV infection.

Adam Castillejo – the now 40-year-old “London Patient” who has decided to go public with his identity- has no detectable active HIV infection in his blood, semen or tissues, his doctors say.

It is now a year after they first announced he was clear of the virus and he still remains free of HIV.

Joe Biden has cemented his position as front-runner in the Democratic race to take on President Donald Trump in November’s White House election.

The former vice-president is projected to win Michigan – the biggest prize of primary voting on Tuesday – and extend his lead over Bernie Sanders.

Mr Biden’s chances recovered with big wins on Super Tuesday, after which several former rivals endorsed him.

It is unclear if Mr Sanders will fight on until the party convention in July.

The Democrats’ next big election milestone is in a week’s time when 577 delegates are up for grabs.

To secure the nomination, a candidate needs the support of 1,991 delegates. Before Tuesday’s vote, Mr Biden had 648 to Mr Sanders’ 563.

The former vice-president, 77, finished a poor fourth in the Iowa caucuses and fifth in the New Hampshire primary.

But the turn came with South Carolina – where he won due to the support of the large African-American community – and on the 3 March Super Tuesday he won 10 out of 14 states at stake, establishing a sizeable lead over the Vermont senator.

Thanking supporters from Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, Mr Biden said Democrats, including supporters of Bernie Sanders, could beat Donald Trump.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a matter of urgency is demanding an immediate and drastic reduction of a minimum of 20% in the pump prices of fuel from the ruling NPP government.

In a statement signed by the National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, he stated that; “the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, coupled with the artificial stability the Ghana cedi appears to be chalking, which is largely due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the injection of the recent $3 billion Eurobond into the economy, should have led to a significant drop in the pump prices of fuel by now.”

  • No evil spirit behind tragic Kintampo accidents Bono East Regional Minister

The Bono East Regional Minister, Honourable Kofi Amoakohene has downplayed assertions by a section of the public that evil spirits are responsible for the numerous accidents on the Kintampo-Tamale road.

According to Amoakohene, there is no evidence to attribute such disasters on that section of the road to evil spirits.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Ghanaweb’s Bono Region correspondent, Aboagye Frank in the wake of the recent Kintampo accident which claimed 27 lives, Honourable Amoakohene revealed that accidents by nature are caused by several factors.

He avers that such factors have been proven to include human errors, bad nature of the road and mechanical faults.

He revealed that accidents in the country are not restricted to only that stretch so it will be strange for any individual to single out accidents on that stretch and attribute them to evil spirits.

“My brother it is sad to lose so many souls through road accidents. It is difficult to accept the carnage on this stretch and so we must look at it with a broader lens if we want to address it.

“I am a Christian but on issues like this, I disagree with anybody who holds such beliefs as most of these accidents have been proven to have been caused by human errors. It is time to get scientific and pragmatic in dealing with such issues.”

The Kintampo-Tamale highway has become notorious for some of the tragic accidents in the country.

Statistically, the Kintampo-Tamale highway has claimed more than 150 lives since 2016.

In February 2016, at least 53 people were killed and 23 others were injured in a head-on collision between a Metro Mass bus and a truck.

In March 2019, another 57 passengers also suffered a similar fate following another head-on collision between buses.
