  • Demand accountability from parties campaign expenditure CDD urges electorate

The Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana) has encouraged the citizenry and the State to demand accountability and transparency from political parties on their campaign expenditure to deepen democratic processes and stability.

It explained that politicians spent huge sums on their campaigns during general election and the practice was crucial and had serious implications in strengthening democratic governance.

Professor Kwesi Prempeh, the Executive Director of CDD-Ghana, gave the encouragement at a national dialogue on political party campaign finance reforms in Ghana, organised by CDD-Ghana in collaboration with Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) in Tamale in the Northern Region.

It funded by STAR Ghana Foundation to foster dialogue among stakeholders on issues related to campaign finance and cost of elections borne by political parties and engage the citizenry and relevant actors in confronting the challenge.

According to Prof Prempeh, “where and how campaign funds are raised and spent by political parties can influence intra-party activities, national political votes, influence both economic and development choices and policies beyond elections.

“It is time for the citizenry to question politicians on how their campaign finance are generated to enhance response against corruption and end rising tension of violence in conduct of general election”.

“Beyond general recognition of corruption as manifestation of campaign financing arrangements, there is need to equally interrogate fundamental systemic and socio-cultural conditions that make our democracy susceptible to growing influence of money.

“Uncontrolled political fund-raising and spending during general election undermined citizenry trust in both political processes and the government which must be examined,” Prof Prempeh pointed out.

Alhaji Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu, the Executive Director of STAR Ghana Foundation, indicated that it was important for voters to know sources of funds politicians or parties use for their campaigns to help the citizenry appreciate better, agenda which candidates or parties are likely to pursue and inform voters in their choice of suitable candidates as their leaders.

Alhaji Abdul-Razak Saani, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), urged members of the public to insist on accountability, transparency and access to political financial information from political parties and politicians to reduce corruption in electoral processes.

Some of the political parties suggested fairness in the use of state resources by all registered political parties, fair access to state resources and manifestos should be in line with national growth and development plan.

Among other demands by the 36 CSOs who adopted the campaign, they emphasized on the need for government to established one hospital in each district across the country with at least one doctor for each hospital.

This, they said will ensure universal access to healthcare which is in line with the sustainable development goals.

According to the Alliance for Reproductive Health Rights Programs Officer, Rhema Andah, healthcare financing trends since 2016 shows a considerable proportion of health budget being spent on compensations whiles expenditure on goods and services and health capital expenditures receive inadequate financial support.

The death toll in the Kintampo accident has risen to 35, the regional minister has told Starr News.

Others who were injured are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.

“Per the briefing I have 35 lives have been lost. 27 burnt beyond recognition. 6 injured and in critical condition. One escaped with a scratch. • ‘I was unprepared for fame’ – Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding says she was “not warned” about the pressures of fame when she started her career in 2009.

The pop star said her first few years in the spotlight were “tough” as she struggled with shyness while “being thrust in front of cameras”.

“I thought that was just what my life was going to be, and what I’d signed up to,” she said.

“It’s only in the last four years I’ve realised that’s not how it had to be. I wish there’d been a little more help.”

The star admitted there had been “times when I felt really, really low,” but added: “I’m feeling good now.”

Addressing a panel on mental health at Annie Mac’s AMP London conference, Goulding she had often faced situations where she felt compelled to perform against her better judgement.

“I remember being really poorly once,” she said. “My voice was gone and I was just generally having a hard time, having toured solidly for about five years.”

Knowing she was “unable to deliver” a live performance to her usual standard, she tried to withdraw from a live radio broadcast, only to be told: “‘We’ll never work with you again… You either do this or you’re blacklisted.’

“So then you’re like, ‘I’ll have to do it, but it’s at the risk of completely shutting down,’” she said.

She was joined in the discussion by Radio 1 presenter Maya Jama, who said she’d experienced a similarly aggressive work schedule at the start of her career.

“There’s a mentality of no days off,” she said. “I didn’t take a holiday for the first two-and-a-half or three years [of my career] because I was scared I was going to miss out on a job; and that could be my big break.

“Now I feel fortunate that I can take time off but there are probably people just starting out who are in the same state of mind.”

Intense scrutiny However, both stars said the entertainment industry had become more attuned to people’s mental health in the last four years.

Goulding was joined on stage by Ben Mortimer, co-president of her record label Polydor, who recalled the industry’s attitude to young artists a decade ago.

“I remember going through an artist’s schedule and we were like, ‘There’s a free day there, what shall we put in?’” he confessed.

“It sounds terrible but we didn’t know any different. We just thought we were doing our job.

“But you come to it now and you’re like, ‘There’s a week free there. Great, Ellie’s got a holiday’.”

Since becoming president of Polydor in 2016, Mortimer has introduced several mental health initiatives, and now works directly with artists to support them when issues like anxiety, depression and fatigue arise.

The panel discussion also covered the impact of social media on celebrities’ mental health, with Jama calling services like Twitter and Instagram “a blessing and a curse”.

“I wouldn’t have half my jobs if it wasn’t for social media,” she said, “but then everything you do is under a massive microscope. It’s not natural to hear so many other people’s opinions about yourself.”

  • Italy sports minister calls for ‘immediate’ halt to Serie A over coronavirus

Italy’s Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora called Sunday for an immediate suspension of the Serie A season due to the coronavirus outbreak that has killed 233 people in the Mediterranean country.

“The FIGC (Italian Football Federation) should consider immediately STOPPING Serie A,” Spadafora wrote in a statement on his Facebook page.

“It makes no sense right now, as we ask citizens to make enormous sacrifices to prevent the spread of the virus, to endanger the lives of players, referees, coaching staff and fans who will surely gather to watch the matches, by not temporarily suspending football.”

Italy has borne the brunt in Europe of an epidemic that first emerged in China at the end of last year and has spread to almost 100 countries.

On Wednesday, the league was ordered to play matches behind closed doors until April 3 as part of broader measures imposed nationwide to limit crowds and fight the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

Italian Footballers’ Association president Damiano Tommasi tweeted on Sunday that “stopping football is the most useful thing for our country right now”.

“The teams to cheer are playing in our hospitals, in emergency rooms,” Tommasi wrote.

Spadafora’s comments are the reported reason for Sunday’s first match Parma v SPAL — one of six previously postponed games being played this weekend — being pushed back over an hour to 1245 GMT.

The clash was supposed to kick off at 1130 GMT but Sky Sport reports that the players were led back into the dressing rooms from the tunnel as they lined up to take the field.

The confusion comes after Italian media obtained copies of draft legislation that ordered the quarantining of the entire Lombardy region in northern Italy, the worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Lombardy capital Milan is Italy’s economic heart, and the region is home to some 10 million people.

The government decree also covers parts of the Veneto region around Venice as well as Emilia-Romagna’s Parma and Rimini.

The decree advised people in the quarantine zones to stay at home as much as possible, and it shuts down all night clubs as well as gyms and swimming pools.

Bars and restaurants will remain open but must ensure that everyone is seated at least a metre (three feet) apart.

It stresses that entry into and out of the new quarantine zones would only be allowed for “serious reasons”.

More 5,800 people have been diagnosed with the virus in Italy in the past two weeks.

Head of Public Relations, Colonel Eric Aggrey Quarshie, in an interview with GhanaWeb, disclosed that the soldiers who were present at the ceremony in their uniforms have been arrested pending investigations.

He stated that the practice of Military officers in uniform making appearance at private events without approval had become “one too many”, and hence the need to clamp it.

Colonel Quarshie further noted with concern that the practice was bringing the name of his outfit into disrepute and maintained that personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces were not for hire to the highest bidder.

He stressed that the officers who had been picked up were being investigated and the appropriate sanction or otherwise would be carried out since the practice was illegal.

He added that the sanctions to be meted ranged from caution to even dismissal depending on the outcome of the investigations.

  • Schools in Kasena-Nankana record low attendance after Independence Day celebration

Some basic schools in the Kasena-Nankana area of the Upper East Region have recorded low attendance on the first day of the new week after Ghana celebrated its 63rd Independence anniversary last week Friday.

This is because some of the students thought Monday has been declared a holiday.

Visits to some of the schools show a drop in the numbers, creating almost empty classrooms, though the Ghana Education Service (GES) in a statement stressed that the day had not been declared a holiday.

Our Reporter, Senyalah Castro who visited a number of schools, reports that teachers who have taken the directive by the GES seriously, have been amazed by the poor numbers.

Some of them who agreed to speak to our reporter but pleaded anonymity, in a conversation expressed shock but blamed poor communication on the part of authorities for the low attendance.

They said the GES should have made it clear to the students earlier that “today, this Monday wasn’t going to be a holiday, but they waited and gave the information last minute. So how do you expect the students who think there’s a holiday after every Independence day march to come to school”. One of the teachers queried.

At one of the primary schools (name withheld), two-third of the class population had not come to school, though it was learnt the school authorities passed the information to the pupils right after the Independence Parade that a holiday had not been given.

For the teachers, even though the numbers were not encouraging, academic work was not going to be impeded.

Asked if school authorities would take punitive actions towards those that have missed out from school today, one teacher responded that: “if the GES advises that we punish them, then we will but if not, we’ll all keep quiet and let it go like that”.

In Ghana, holidays are mostly given whenever the celebration of the Independence Day falls within the week. The holiday is usually given to enable school children, teachers and other workers who took part in the independence Parade have some rest.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Court has granted a bail of GH¢30,000 to a 19-year-old student for allegedly possessing two wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a narcotic drug.

Abdul-Rahman Yakubu pleaded guilty of possessing a narcotic drug, but the court held that the substance had not been tested and as a result granted him bail until March 31 to enable the police to conclude their forensic tests.

Police Inspector Michael Koole, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Abdul-Razak Musah that the suspect was arrested on February 24 at Afrancho, near Akomadan.

  • Takoradi-Tarkwa rail line gets improvement

The construction of a new standard gauge railway line from Kojokrom to Manso to replace the narrow gauge line on the Takoradi-Tarkwa stretch being funded by the Government of Ghana is progressing steadily.

Upon completion, the new line would ensure high-speed and minimal or no interruption in the passenger train service on the Takoradi-Tarkwa rail line.

It would be recalled that the passenger service on the Takoradi-Tarkwa line had to be suspended for two weeks by the Ghana Railway Company after about three weeks of free passenger service, to allow the engineers work to improve the line.

As part of the initiative, the contractor, Amandi Holdings, is building eight 25 tons culverts from kilometre 16 to kilometre 20 on the existing narrow gauge line.

The Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, inspecting the ongoing works at Eshiem and Angu in the Western Region, expressed satisfaction with the progress on the line.

He said that the line had to be diverted from the Eshiem community because of the high-speed trains that would be plying the new standard gauge lines.

He also said the high-speed lines did not require too many curves, so it was appropriate the new line was diverted so that the curvy nature of the old line through Eshiem could be avoided.

“The engineers and consultants are looking at how they can stay within the right of way without compromising the speed,” he stated, adding that the consultant for the project had sent a proposal to the Railway Development Authority to extend the reopening of Takoradi-Tarkwa lines to enable them to build a world-class rail sector.

“The people are eager to see the train service to begin but the advice from the engineers is that we must extend the reopening date,” he added.

The Deputy Resident Engineer for Team Engineering, the Consultant, Peter Forkah, said they had sent a proposal to the authorities to use the shutdown period to continue with the construction of more culverts where necessary on the Kojokrom to Tarkwa stretch.

He said once the proposal was accepted, the reopening date of the passenger train from Takoradi to Tarkwa would have to be extended for about six weeks.

    Longest Train Bridge

Earlier, the minister and his entourage inspected the construction of a 385-metre viaduct (Train Bridge), believed to be the longest in West Africa, over the road linking Eshiem to Kojokrom.

This viaduct which diverts the line from the Eshiem community is about 90 per cent complete.

According to the General Manager of Amandi Holdings, David Ben Ayun, the viaduct and other attached works were costing the country about $90 million.

  • Coronavirus: Italy death toll soars amid travel ban

The number of people to have died from the coronavirus in Italy has shot up by 133 in a day to 366, officials say.

The total number of infections leapt 25% to 7,375 from 5,883, according to the Civil Protection agency.

The jump in figures comes as millions adapt to new measures introduced on Sunday in an attempt to contain the outbreak.

Up to 16 million people in Lombardy and 14 provinces need special permission to travel under new quarantine rules.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country.

The radical measures will last until 3 April.

The latest figures mean Italy now has the highest number of confirmed infections outside of China, where the outbreak originated in December. It has overtaken South Korea, where the total number of cases is 7,313.

Among the latest people to test positive in Italy is the army’s chief of staff. Salvatore Farina said he felt well and was self-isolating.

The strict new quarantine measures affect a quarter of the Italian population and centre on the rich northern part of the country that powers its economy.

The health system is under immense strain in Lombardy, a northern region of 10 million people, where people are being treated in hospital corridors.

“We want to guarantee the health of our citizens. We understand that these measures will impose sacrifices, sometimes small and sometimes very big,” Prime Minister Conte said as he announced the measures in the middle of Saturday night.

Under the new measures, people are not supposed to be able to enter or leave Lombardy, where Milan is the main city.

The same restrictions apply to 14 provinces: Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Rimini, Pesaro and Urbino, Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano Cusio Ossola, Vercelli, Padua, Treviso and Venice.

Some transport in and out of the regions affected continued on Sunday. Flights continued to arrive at Milan’s Malpensa and Linate airports, though some scheduled flights were cancelled.

However, Italy’s national carrier Alitalia said it would suspend all operations from Malpensa from Monday and Linate would only serve domestic routes. International flights would continue to and from Rome.

The World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Italy for making “genuine sacrifices” with the restrictions. Until Sunday only about 50,000 people in northern Italy had been affected by quarantines.

Last week the government announced the closure of all schools and universities across the country for 10 days.

    What is the situation elsewhere?

The number of infections worldwide is more than 107,000, with about 3,600 deaths.

Most of the fatalities have been in China. But the country on Sunday reported its lowest number of new infections in a single day since January – an indication that the virus’s spread there is slowing.

Iran, one of the worst hotspots outside China, has now confirmed 6,566 infections and 194 deaths.

However, the real figure is feared to be much higher. One report on Sunday, quoting a government envoy, said there had been 200 deaths in the northern Gilan province alone – but the figures were later removed.

    In other developments:

Saudi Arabia has put the governorate of Qatif in the oil-producing Eastern Province into lockdown. The cases confirmed in Qatif – where the Shia minority live – have all been traced back to Iran

A hotel being used as a coronavirus quarantine facility in the Chinese city of Quanzhou collapsed, killing at least ten people

Pope Francis delivered his first live-streamed Sunday prayer to avoid the usual crowds forming – he said he was “close through prayer” with those suffering from the epidemic

In the US, a cruise ship with 3,533 passengers and crew held off the coast near San Francisco after 21 people tested positive for the disease has been directed to the nearby port of Oakland

An individual who attended a conservative political conference last week that President Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence spoke at has been confirmed to have the virus

In the US more than 400 cases have been reported, and the death toll is 19.

Among other countries to report a rise in the total number of cases are: France (to 1,126); Germany (939); Spain (589); the UK (273); the Netherlands (188).

Colombia, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Malta, the Maldives and Paraguay have, meanwhile, all reported their first cases.

  • Ramsey strikes to help Juventus sink Inter

Aaron Ramsey’s opening goal helped Juventus beat Inter Milan and claim top spot in Serie A in an empty Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

The Derby d’Italia, played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus emergency in Italy, endured a cagey first half despite Matthijs De Ligt and Marcelo Brozovic going close for both sides.

But Ramsey broke the deadlock with close-range finish for his third league goal of the season (54) and Paulo Dybala sealed the three points for the hosts with a delightful finish with the outside of the boot (67).

Inter went close in the final stages via a Christian Eriksen shot which flew past the crossbar but Antonio Conte’s side failed to test the Serie A champions with a lacklustre second-half performance.

The win lifts Maurizio Sarri’s side back into top spot in Serie A, one point ahead of Lazio, leaving Inter’s title dreams in tatters as the Milan club now sit nine points off their rivals.

Despite the deserted atmosphere in Turin both sides made a lively start to the game, with Juventus matching Inter’s early pressure as Samir Handanovic showed quick reflexes to deny De Ligt’s goal-bound header from a corner.

The Inter goalkeeper, who returned after a lengthy injury spell, was back at it again minutes later when he got down to make a crucial one-hand save to keep out a fizzing drive from Blaise Matuidi.

Inter worked the ball around well and showed promising signs but tested Wojciech Szczesny very rarely, their biggest chance coming with a low strike from Brozovic parried away by the Juve ‘keeper.

The hosts came quick out of the blocks in the second half and took the lead when Ramsey collected a loose ball in the box and fired in from close range with the help of a slight deflection off Stefan De Vrij.

From there onwards, Inter were second best and moments after Eriksen entered the fray to give them a much-needed boost in quality, Juventus found the all-important second goal to kill off their rivals with a piece of magic.

Sub Dybala latched onto a long ball and combined with Ramsey before he entered the box, dummied Ashley Young and placed a delightful shot off the outside of his left boot into the bottom corner.

Eriksen could have set up a tense finale after Alexis Sanchez, subbed on for an uninspiring Romelu Lukaku, teed him up inside the box but the former Tottenham playmaker failed to test Szczesny as he saw his shot fly inches over the crossbar.

Inter lost confidence rapidly while Cristiano Ronaldo looked for a goal to mark his 1000th game in professional football and went close to adding a third twice in stoppage time, but his efforts fizzed just wide of Handanovic’s goal.

The Serie A title race now heats up as Juventus and Lazio are set for a head-to-head run-in while Inter lose further ground from the top of the table, although they could cut the gap back down to six points should they win their postponed game against Sampdoria.

  • Chelsea rout Everton on Ancelotti return

A dominant Chelsea thrashed Everton 4-0 in the Premier League on Super Sunday, making it an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge for Carlo Ancelotti.

The Everton boss had never faced Chelsea before in his managerial career and returned to Stamford Bridge for the first time since his sacking from the club in 2011, but it got off to the worst start when Mason Mount produced a fine, swivelled finish in the 14th minute.

Chelsea continued to dominate throughout – with 18-year-old Premier League debutante Billy Gilmour impressing once again – and the hosts doubled their lead seven minutes later as Pedro (21) slotted home.

But the game was ultimately decided just after the break, when Willian (51) and Olivier Giroud (54) hit Everton with two quick goals, leaving Ancelotti and his assistant Duncan Ferguson stoney-faced on the touchline.

The result keeps Chelsea three points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United – who beat Manchester City 2-0 later in the day – while Everton, who have now gone over four years without a Premier League goal at Stamford Bridge, remain in 12th.

Chelsea dominated the first half and went close early on, but Mount’s hooked effort was well stopped as Jordan Pickford leapt across to make the save. However, in the 14th minute, the Everton goalkeeper could not keep out Mount for a second time.

It was the Chelsea midfielder who started the move off too, feeding Pedro down the left before receiving the ball back in the middle. He swivelled as he controlled and struck, sending his effort hammering into the bottom corner and beating his England team-mate.

Despite recent criticism, Pickford had a mostly solid first half and the scoreline could have been extended much further without him. He was in action again when Willian burst into the area from the right flank but with no one in support, went for goal himself, only to see his effort pushed away by the Everton goalkeeper at the near post.

  • Real Madrid hand Barca top spot after shock loss

Cristian Tello’s second-half goal clinched a surprise 2-1 win for Real Betis against Real Madrid to hand Barcelona top spot in La Liga.

Tello fired Betis to their first win in eight games and their second in La Liga this year after Karim Benzema’s penalty had cancelled out Sidnei’s superb opening goal.

Madrid, who struck the crossbar through Ferland Mendy in the second half, missed the chance to leapfrog Barcelona at the top of the table and have lost three of their last four games in all competitions.

Vinicius Junior was first to threaten, firing just wide from inside the penalty area in the 16th minute, while Edgar Gonzalez and Marc Bartra both headed off target for Betis following set-pieces.

Betis forward Nabil Fekir’s shot was brilliantly saved by Thibaut Courtois and the home side took the lead in spectacular fashion five minutes before half-time.

Fekir provided the assist following a corner and Sidnei crashed home an unstoppable rising shot past Courtois into the top corner.

But the Brazilian centre-half was culpable as the visitors drew level in first-half stoppage time.

  • Elizabeth Frances Sey JCR elections postponed until further notice

The Judicial Board of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council has, in a unanimous decision, granted an interlocutory injunction on the 2020 Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall JCR Election.

The judgment which was delivered by Her Ladyship Blessing Otchere Darko Adutwumwaa (Chief Justice of the UGSRC Judicial Board) implies that the 2020 Elizabeth Sey Hall JCR which was slated for Monday, March 9 2020 cannot come off as scheduled.

According to the March 7 judgement sighted by Univers News, the interlocutory injunction was granted on the three (3) grounds notably set out in the case of Welford Quarcoe v. The Attorney General.

Here is an except of the March 7 injunction pending appeal judgement:

“After hearing the Applicant / Applicant in this motion ex-parte for interlocutory injunction and after a thorough perusal of the action before us, this board has decided on the matter at hand on three (3) grounds notably set out in the case of Welford Quarcoe v. The Attorney General to ascertain the grant of the interlocutory injunction as follows; 1. That there is a serious case to be tried.

The board finds after perusing the case at hand that there is indeed a serious matter to be tried and as such satisfies itself on the first ground.

    2. That the balance of convenience is tilted not to inconvenience any of the parties in the substantive matter. The board again satisfied itself that, the grant of this interlocutory injunction will not inconvenience any of the parties harshly but rather if this application is not granted, will woefully affect the Applicant / Applicant herein.

    3. That the irreparable damage will be caused to the Applicant / Applicant herein if the application is not granted. The board again was convinced that the refusal of the application before it will seriously affect the Applicant / Applicant as to no amount of compensation can cover or make up for it.

That the absence of any of the above three would have caused the application to fail, but on the contrary, the board was satisfied as to the establishment of all three grounds and as such grant the application for Injunction on the Electoral Process of the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall JCR Elections. Same is ordered accordingly.”

The appeal case is scheduled to he heard on Monday, March 9 2020 at about 7pm.

The appeal case was brought to the SRC Judicial Board by the solicitors of Mr. Wisdom Ndukwe, an aspirant in the 2020 Sey JCR Elections.

  • Northern Regional Minister fumes at claims hes plotting fresh trouble in Dagbon

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has angrily responded to those he labelled as “chieftaincy contractors” and “conflict – preneurs” accusing him of seeking to spark fresh chieftaincy trouble in Dagbon.

The highly incensed Minister denounced the allegations as “palpable lies” and threatened to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those peddling same.

Mr. Saeed, since the restoration of peace in Dagbon, has come under shifting allegations, notably from groups and individuals associated with the Andani Royal family.

He was first accused of using state powers to assist some chiefs within the Abudu royal gate to sidestep the authority of the Ya-Naa Abukari Mahama II, after the Regional Security Council decided to hold back a military intervention in Nanton, where a former chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Naa Haruna Sulemana Tia, declared himself chief after the people there rejected a candidate chosen by the Dagbon overlord.

The allegations intensified recently after members of the two royal families clashed at Kpatinga in the Gushegu area in which at least two persons died and several properties such as foodstuffs and houses were damaged.

Only last week, a grandson of the late Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II, Dr. Mahama Shaibu, led a group of Andani youth to hold a press conference against Mr. Saeed, alleging that the Minister had ordered some Andani chiefs, including the Gukpegu Naa of Tamale, to vacate their palaces for the Abudus to hold funerals for their late royals.

It followed similar but a furious news briefing by the warlord of the Tamale chief, who threatened what he called “unprecedented mayhem and chaos” in Dagbon and called on the president, Nana AKufo-Addo to rein in the Regional Minister.

Many people have also taken to social media platform, WhatsApp, to spread the allegations against the Minister.

However, in response, the Regional Minister descended heavily on his accusers, describing them as veiled politicians trying to awaken chieftaincy politics in Dagbon in an election year.

Addressing the 63rd Independence Anniversary parade in the capital, Tamale, on Friday, March 6, Mr Saeed pushed back the allegations.

“Even when REGSEC has not taken a decision, people are going about and telling lies, that the Regional Security Council headed by the Northern Regional Minister is telling some chiefs to move out of their palaces for people to perform funerals,” he angrily veered off from his prepared speech.

“It’s palpable lies. It’s complete lies. Where is their evidence? I am the first person to call for their arrest and imprisonment because they cannot just create lies and go scot free,” he continued.

The Minister said he would take legal action against those peddling the falsehoods as well as cause the arrest of those secretly plotting to foment trouble.

Pleading with the chiefs to advise their subjects and representatives, the Minister reassured that he would take every necessary action, as chairman of the Regional Security Council, to protect and preserve the Dagbon peace.

Mr. Salifu has earned accolades from several quarters and establishments both locally and internationally including the UN, for his exceptional contributions in the successful implementation of the Dagbon peace plan.

“If Regional Security Council wants to do something with a chief, be it a divisional chief or Paramount chief, we have a responsibility to come to them directly,” he assured.

“From now onwards, anyone who will hide under the cover of the phone (and do recordings to cause trouble), we are going to ensure that the person will be arrested and no chief would ask the release of that person,” he concluded.

  • 962 SHS infrastructural projects ongoing nationwide Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said a total of 962 structures are being constructed in all Senior High Schools across the country to address infrastructural challenges.

According to the President, the government has put in place an elaborate program to ensure that the many problems faced by second cycle schools as a result of the introduction of the Free SHS are addressed.

Speaking at the 68th Speech and Prize Giving Day ceremony of the Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi, Nana Akufo-Addo said the government will continue to invest heavily in education.

“We are investing heavily in infrastructure, particularly in our double track schools. Here at Opoku Ware School, for example, Government has already completed the construction of a twelve-unit classroom block, which I understand is currently in use, together with the provision of 1,500 sets of tables and chairs. Government is constructing a new four-storey dormitory block, work on which is progressing steadily. In total 962 structures are being constructed in schools across the country,” President Akufo-Addo said.

With 1.2 million children currently enrolled in senior high schools across the country, the President explained that the expansion in access, automatically, brought with it a problem of infrastructure which necessitates the implementation of various infrastructural projects to meet the demands.

President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that the problem of addressing the infrastructure deficit “was an excellent and exciting one because more children wanting to go to school beyond Junior High School was good news.”

He continued saying: “Our position is that every child who qualifies to be in Senior High School must be given the opportunity to do so.”

The provision of access to 1.2 million children, he said, has entailed innovation in the usage of the resources available, and “it is out of this that the idea of the double-track system was born, a system that has worked well in many other jurisdictions.”

By implementing the double-track system, President Akufo-Addo said Government has been able to ensure the best possible use of the space and assets available in schools, throughout the year.

“Schools, that operate the double-track system, have increased their SHS 1 intake by up to fifty percent (50%) of their usual capacity. This has given many young students a better opportunity to enter our elite schools, such as Opoku Ware, than was previously the case”, he added.

President Akufo-Addo further added that every district, municipal and metropolitan directorate of education will receive a pick-up vehicle to help them in their work and enable them to deliver quality education.

“I assure all of you that Government will deal with the issues as they arise, and ensure that we continue to invest in the education and skills training of our young people, as the investment represents the best hope for the social and economic future of our country,” the President added.

  • Independence Day celebration in Kumasi was an NPP rally – Yamoah Ponkoh

Former Municipal Chief Executive Officer for the Ejisu Municipal Assembly, Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh, has pooh-poohed the 63rd Independence Day celebration which was held in Kumai on Friday, describing it as more of a rally for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the ruling party, under the guise of an Independence celebration, splurged state resources on party faithfuls and apparatchiks like there is no tomorrow.

Speaking in an interview with Okay Fm Ade Akye Abia program, he accused the NPP government of merely decorating the Kumasi Sports Stadium and draping trees lining the roads leading to the event grounds with paraphernalia national colors just to give the programme a semblance of state value.

“The NPP government did not do anything new with this independence day celebration, they only decided to deceive the people of Kumasi because they have not been able to do anything meaningful for them since they assume power.

“This is a clear indication that the NPP lied to Ashantis when they needed their votes and they think that they can do same again as the next election approaches. No way, the people of Ashanti will not fall for their tricks again,” he added.

Thousands of Ghanaians on March 6, 2020, converged at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for the celebration of the 63rd Independence Day, marked under the theme: ‘Consolidating Our Gains’.

This was the first time it was moved to the Ashanti Region, after 62 years of Independence.

There was a heavy military presence as representatives of the various military and paramilitary bodies took positions to ensure and maintain law and order.

The National Disaster Management Organisation, the staff of the Ghana Health Service, among others were also strategically placed with their tents and equipment to ensure that any eventuality was adequately handled.

One-hundred-and-fifty Diplomats grace the 63rd independence anniversary celebration of the Republic of Ghana at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi, the capital of the Asanti Region.

But conspicuously missing at the celebration were former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and Jerry John Rawlings, and most members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

  • Samuel Tetteh delighted to ‘assist’ in LASK victory over Mattersburg

In-form Ghana forward Samuel Tetteh is delighted to provide the match winning assist in LASK Linz 1-0 win in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday.

The 23-year old, who has been a constant supplier this season, created the only goal of the game after lacing on a beautiful pass to Joao Klaus de Mello in the first half.

Tetteh created several opportunities which LASK failed to capitalize on but manager Valerien Ismael had to replace the Ghanaian in the 77th minute to keep him fresh for the big game against Manchester United on Thursday.

The former WAFA star could be handed a late call up to the senior national team for the game against Sudan following the injury to Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom.

Tetteh has scored five and created three assist in 19 games in the Austrian topflight this season.

  • Coronavirus: Italy death toll soars amid travel ban

The number of people to have died from the coronavirus in Italy has shot up by 133 in a day to 366, officials say.

The total number of infections leapt 25% to 7,375 from 5,883, according to the Civil Protection agency.

The jump in figures comes as millions adapt to radical measures introduced on Sunday in an attempt to contain the outbreak.

Up to 16 million people in Lombardy and 14 provinces need special permission to travel under new quarantine rules.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte also announced the closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the whole country.

The restrictions will last until 3 April.

The latest figures mean Italy now has the highest number of confirmed infections outside China, where the outbreak originated in December. It has overtaken South Korea, where the total number of cases is 7,313.

Italy has one of the world’s oldest populations. The virus is particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

  • Coronavirus: Foreigners leave North Korea on first commercial flight for weeks

Around 60 foreigners who were quarantined for weeks in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, have finally left the country.

The Air Koryo flight to Vladivostok is the first commercial flight to leave North Korea in over a month, said specialist news site NK News.

Flight KOR271 landed in the far-eastern Russian city on Monday morning.

The embassy staff who left had been confined to their compounds for weeks during February and early March.

North Korea quarantined hundreds of foreigners in the capital in an attempt to stop the coronavirus from breaking out.

Russian ambassador Alexander Matsegora described the conditions as “morally crushing”.

There have been no reported cases of coronavirus in North Korea, though some experts have cast doubt on this.

North Korea borders China, where the virus emerged, and South Korea, where there has been a major outbreak.

Flight KOR271 left Pyongyang at 08:40 local time on Monday (23:40 on Sunday) and arrived in Vladivostok at 10:47, said flight tracking site FlightAware.

At least 60 diplomats and embassy staff were thought to be on the flight. It’s not known how or when they will return to their home countries.

The British ambassador to North Korea tweeted early on Monday that he was “sad to say farewell to colleagues from [the] Germany Embassy and French Office”.

Colin Crooks added that other embassies were closing temporarily but that the British embassy would remain open.

He also tweeted pictures showing two white minivans taking staff to the airport.

North Korea had previously quarantined around 380 foreigners – mostly diplomats and staff in Pyongyang – in their compounds for at least 30 days.

It lifted the restrictions last week after more than a month.

Swedish ambassador Joachim Bergstrom reacting by tweeting a selfie with the caption: “I have never been happier standing on Kim ll Sung Square.”

However, foreigners’ interactions with locals were still restricted, said NK News, as they were not allowed to visit restaurants, shops, gyms and hotels in the city.

There are concerns that North Korea, which is subject to international sanctions, lacks the health infrastructure to test and treat those infected.

The number of infections worldwide is more than 107,000, with about 3,600 deaths.

  • Asian stock markets tumble after oil prices crash

Asian stock markets fell sharply on Monday spooked by a major crash in oil prices and weak economic data.

In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell more than 5% while in Australia, the ASX 200 slumped 7.3%, its biggest daily drop since 2008.

Markets have been rattled by the threat of a price war between oil exporting group Opec and its main ally Russia.

Asian investors also reacted to a slump in Chinese export figures and the shrinking of the Japanese economy.

Global markets have already seen heightened volatility over fears of a major economic hit from the coronavirus outbreak.

With oil prices crashing more than 30% on Monday, energy firms have seen some of the biggest share price falls.

Australia-listed Oil Search’s share price dropped by 31% while energy firm Santos saw its shares drop more than a quarter in value (27%).

Oil and other commodity companies make up a large part of the Australian stock market.

In China, its benchmark Shanghai Composite fell almost 2%, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index plummeted 3.7% in early trading on Monday.

“China will make its contribution to the thunder clouds hanging over markets as Monday starts,” said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst at broker OANDA.

On Saturday, China released import and export figures for the first two months of the year. Exports fell by 17.2% while imports dropped by 4%. This gave the Chinese economy a trade deficit of $7.1 billion as it struggles with the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

“China may slowly be returning to work, but manufacturers will now likely be facing an international fall in demand, with coronavirus now well-established outside of Chinese shores,” added Mr Halley.

In Japan, market sentiment was hit by GDP data that showed a plunge in economic growth of -7.1% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
