  • Sensitization about the deadly coronavirus should increase Dr. Joseph Donkor

Medical Director at the Manhean Polyclinic, Dr. Joseph Donkor, has urged the major stakeholders in health within the country to keep educating the public about the deadly coronavirus.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Dr. Donkor stated that educating the public about the virus will enable them to take the right steps to avoid spreading it if cases are reported in Ghana.

“We need to educate the public, so we need to do a lot of sensitization at churches, in schools and public gatherings in the aim of trying to empower the people for them to know what they are supposed to do if they should come across any of these signs and symptoms,” he said.

According to him, the rate at which the disease is spreading is very alarming, and as such more people should be given the opportunity to learn about the best ways to prevent being infected as well as infecting others.

“What is happening is that the disease is spreading so fast, more education needs to be done, people are unaware, and so we need to do more sensitization. More churches are supposed to be involved, and more traditional leaders are supposed to be involved,” he said.

Dr. Joseph Donkor counselled that, anyone showing signs of the virus should quickly go to the nearest medical centre for aid.

“The signs and symptoms are like common cold. With this disease, these symptoms show up and then it gets worse, so you start to have difficulty in breathing, your kidney fails, you have diarrhoea and the person can die. If anyone shows any of these symptoms like cough, cold, sneezing, headaches, and fever, the person should quickly report to the facility as soon as possible for further clarification and assessment to be done, and especially people who have travelled outside the country,” he concluded.

He however strongly debunked some myths about the virus, such as claims that the use dettol and chewing of garlic can help prevent it, cautioning the public to desist from following those wrong instructions.

  • I will apologise if truly my officials removed NDC flags – Ablekuma West MCE

The Ablekuma West Municipal Chief Executive George Cyril Bray says he will render an apology to political aspirants in the area if truly his men removed their flags. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen after yesterday’s backlash that the taskforce from the Municipal Assembly deliberately removed the flags of NDC aspirant, George Cyril Bray explained that the directive was to get rid of unauthorized signages and not party flags.

According to him, he noticed yesterday that most signages in the area especially those mounted on the light poles are without permission from the Municipal Assembly.

After enquiring from the officers in charge of issuing the permit, he found out that those boards were not authorized so he ordered them to be brought down by the taskforce.

George Cyril Bray indicated that due to lack of funds for various activities in the area they are most strict on the permit for these signages but party flags were not part of the exercise.

He believes the action is an excess on the part of some officials of the assembly.

George Cyril Bray further stated that we will apologize to any party whose flags were brought down and will also order for the flags to be sent back.

Speaking on how activities are conducted during election years, George Cyril Bray said they always allow political parties to hang their flyers and paste their posters during these seasons.

He added that there is no restriction on political parties but they only advise them to do so in a measured manner.

Still commenting on the issues of posters and flyers in the capital, he said somewhere last year Chief Executives met and agreed that they won’t allow for individuals and groups to paste their posters on the major streets in the capital, and for the Ablekuma West, the taskforce goes around every week to check for these things on the highway.

  • NPP aspirant who stormed vetting with gun disqualified, supporters defiant

The Central Region Security Coordinator, John Ofori Atta, was one of the aspirants disqualified after vetting of candidates for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary in the Atwima Mponua Constituency.

According to sources, Mr Ofori Atta was accused of bringing a gun to the vetting premises at Santasi, Kumasi though he said he did not bring the gun there to cause trouble.

He is reported to have told the vetting officials that he brought the gun to protect himself as a security coordinator.

But the main reason for his disqualification has been pointed to the fact that he has never voted in the constituency before.

Allegations are rife that he votes in the Central Region, where he has been made the Security Coordinator.

But a section of NPP supporters are suspecting foul play as they claim the Youth and Sports Minister and current Member of Parliament, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, had always seen Mr Ofori Atta as a threat to him in the parliamentary primary.

“I suspect Mr Asiamah paid money to the vetting team to disqualify Mr Ofori Atta,” one of the supporters at the vetting premises alleged.

Another contestant, a lady, was disqualified after the vetting because she is said to have not voted in Ghana before.

Mr Asiamah will contest the primary unopposed.

But the supporters are protesting this.

“Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, still we will not vote for you so consider heavy defeat,” a supporter posted on his Facebook wall.

According to them, Mr Asiamah has been Atwima Mponua MP for so many years but there is no single project he can pinpoint as his achievement.

  • Road Safety Authority calls for public support in curbing road accidents

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is calling for an all-hands-on-deck approach in reducing carnages on our roads.

Yesterday, March 9, 2020, a horrific accident occurred on the Kintampo-Tamale highway claiming 30 lives and burning 27 persons beyond recognition.

The accident involved two buses, a Yutong bus and Benz Sprinter.

The Yutong bus reportedly veered off its lane and collided with the sprinter bus causing both vehicles to glow up in flames.

In reaction to the accident which occurred yesterday, the Executive Director of the Authority, May Obiri-Yeboah speaking on Starr FM, called on stakeholders to collaborate and curb the menace of road accidents in the country.

”A lot of these accidents are human-centred. The causes,90% or more are human factors before you come to the nature of roads. Trying to address this, drivers need to be checked at the stations especially the logical aspects of them, every aspect of the driver must be checked to ensure that he is safe to be behind the steer before setting off.”

“Also, those of us who are stakeholders, what we also are supposed to be doing as stakeholders, as human beings what we can make the journey successful. Then our various roads, where road safety must educate the general public and drivers”.

She further indicated that: “Also, the engineers how they can look at the proper design of our roads. When it comes to the vehicles, the DVLA check whether the roadworthiness are being laid out properly to ensure that we are getting somewhere. When it comes to enforcement, we must ensure that these are being enforced to ensure safety”.

However, police in Kintampo in the Bono East Region are appealing to the public to assist the service in identifying bodies of the 27 victims who were burnt beyond recognition in yesterday’s accident.

  • Coronavirus: Virgin Atlantic admits flying near-empty planes

Virgin Atlantic has confirmed it has been forced to operate some near-empty flights after bookings were dented by the coronavirus outbreak.

It is operating the flights to try to retain take-off and landing slots at major airports such as Heathrow.

Under European law, if flights are not operated, slots have to be forfeited.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has written to the European Commission, asking for rules on slot allocation to be relaxed during the outbreak.

Other carriers are thought to be taking similar steps – even reportedly flying so-called “ghost planes” with no passengers on board at all in order to safeguard their presence at major hubs.

    ‘Use it or lose it’

Airline passenger numbers have fallen dramatically in recent weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak. On some routes, they have halved and carriers have been cancelling services.

However, this could cause them a serious problem, particularly if they fly out of large or heavily congested airports. Under international guidelines, which are enshrined in European law, take-off and landing slots at these airports are limited.

In the UK, the rules apply to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, London Luton and London City.

Slots are granted according to historical rights at these airports. If, for example, a carrier operated a particular schedule through the summer season last year, it retains the right to those same slots this summer.

But there is a catch. Under the “use it or lose it” rule, slots have to be used at least 80% of the time. If an airline fails to reach that threshold, the slots are put back into a pool and allocated to other carriers.

Although they are technically granted for free, there is a thriving secondary market on which the most desirable slots can change hands for significant sums – tens of millions of pounds across a season. So airlines are very reluctant to lose them.

The rule has already been suspended on routes to China and Hong Kong, but still applies elsewhere.

“Passenger demand for air travel has dramatically fallen due to Covid-19 and in some instances we are being forced to fly almost empty planes or lose our valuable slots”, said Shai Weiss, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic.

One UK carrier has said that unless the rules change, it will have to operate 32 flights over the next two weeks with only 40% of the aircraft occupied. That would leave more than 5,000 seats empty.

    ‘Wasting money and fuel’

Airlines are now lobbying hard for the rules to be relaxed.

Tim Alderslade, chief executive of the industry body Airlines UK, said: “It makes no sense whatsoever under these unique and challenging circumstances to force airlines to fly empty aircraft, wasting money and fuel and creating carbon emissions”.

He added: “We urgently need a temporary suspension of the rule – as happened during the financial crisis – to allow airlines to respond to demand and use their aircraft efficiently.”

However, if the rules are to be relaxed, the decision will have to come from Brussels. Although the UK has officially withdrawn from the European Union (EU), an EU regulation on slot allocation still applies.

On Monday the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps wrote to the European Commission. He asked it to introduce “practical and proportionate measures” to address the situation, possibly including “flexibility with the 80% threshold, implemented on a market-by-market basis or more broadly”.

The body directly responsible for slot allocation in the UK, Airport Coordination Limited, has joined other organisations from across Europe in calling for the “use it or lose it” measure to be suspended from mid-February until the end of June.

  • Fire Service’s advise to Ghanaians after Kintampo accident

The Ghana National Fire Service has advised the general public after the Kintampo-Tamale Highway accident.

After the accident on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway in which at least 28 people were burnt beyond recognition, Divisional Officer II Ellis Robinson Okoe said drivers must always make sure their vehicles are functioning properly before moving them.

“Whenever you wake up in the morning you do what we call ……drill, it involves checking the level of oil in the vehicle, checking whether there is enough water in the vehicle and checking other things like the brake to ensure that they are functioning properly before the car is moved. You must also ensure that when you are moving the vehicle there is an extinguisher in the vehicle if there is an electrical fault it can result in a fire outbreak, apart from that you have to check your tyre….”

He has also advised the public to take note of emergency exit points when boarding a vehicle.

“There should be some basic entry and exit emergency route that could be used during accidents and people must familiarise themselves with such emergency exit routes.”

    Accident

At least 28 persons have been confirmed dead after two buses collided on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway.

The deceased in the crash were burned beyond recognition after the wreckage caught fire. There were six survivors who have been sent to nearby health facilities.

The Kintampo Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Kwabena Gbagbo said the crash happened around 3 am on Monday, March 9, 2020.

One of the buses involved in the crash was from Bawku and was headed to Techiman when the crash occurred near an area called Dawadawa No 2. It had about 11 passengers on board.

The other vehicle was a Sprinter bus with about 23 passengers.

  • Israel announces two-week quarantine for all everyone entering the country

Israel will impose a two-week quarantine on all travellers entering the country, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, toughening already significant travel restrictions.

“After a day of difficult discussions, we have taken a decision: all those coming to Israel from abroad will be placed in isolation for 14 days,” Netanyahu said in a video broadcast on his Twitter account.

“This is a difficult decision but it is essential to maintaining public health, which takes precedence over everything,” he added, according to a statement.

He noted that the measure would be implemented for two weeks and promised steps to support the Israeli economy.

Israel had already imposed major restrictions on travellers arriving from several countries.

On Wednesday, the Jewish state had barred entry to almost all non-residents arriving from France, Germany, Spain, Austria and Switzerland, declaring that arrivals from those nations could only enter if they could prove they had a place to stay in quarantine.

Those measures had come on top of restrictions previously imposed on arrivals from mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Macau, South Korea, Japan and Italy.

But restrictions had not until now extended to travellers from the United States, which last year contributed nearly 890,000 tourist arrivals to Israel — more than double that of France, in second place.

Israel has so far recorded 50 cases of the illness.

The Palestinian Authority, which on Thursday declared a 30-day state of emergency in parts of the West Bank it administers, has reported 25 cases.

The latest measures come a month ahead of the Passover festival, which usually sees tens of thousands of Jews head to Israel to celebrate.

Since the novel coronavirus first emerged in late December, 113,255 cases have been recorded in 101 countries and territories, killing 3,964 people, according to an AFP toll based on official sources on Monday around 1700 GMT.

  • Coronavirus: Italians barred from Austria to stop spread

Austria has announced a ban on Italians entering the country unless they carry a medical certificate, in an attempt to stop coronavirus spreading.

Speaking after the Italian government-imposed travel restrictions across the country, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Austrians returning from Italy would have to self-isolate for two weeks.

Austria has seen 158 cases of coronavirus so far.

Mr. Kurz said the number was still very low but the disease was deadly.

Austria and Italy share a border north of Italy’s South Tyrol region. On Tuesday, South Tyrol, in common with the rest of Italy, closed all cultural centers and restricted access to bars and cafes to daytime hours.

Italy’s nationwide lockdown limits travel to those with “proven work requirements or situations of necessity”. All sporting events have been suspended, and schools and universities have been shut until 3 April. Employees have been urged either to work from home or take annual leave.

Hotel and tourist accommodation operators in South Tyrol have ended their winter holiday season early and agreed to delay the spring tourist season.

“Regarding Austrians in Italy, we are currently organizing repatriation of these Austrians,” Mr. Kurz told reporters in Vienna.

Five mobile teams began health checks on the Brenner Pass as well as two other routes between the two countries on Tuesday.

Austria is introducing further restrictions. University teaching is being suspended, as well as indoor events involving more than 100 people and outdoor events with more than 500.

“The fewer social contacts there are, the better prepared the hospitals will be,” said Mr. Kurz.

  • La Liga matches to be played behind closed doors for the next two weeks

Matches in Spain’s top two divisions will be played behind closed doors for at least the next two weeks because of coronavirus concerns.

The change will take effect from Tuesday, with fans now banned from the game between Eibar and Real Sociedad.

La Liga acted on guidance from Spain’s ministry of health and the country’s sports council.

Barcelona’s Champions League match against Napoli on 18 March will also be played at an empty Nou Camp.

“The decision has been made strictly for health reasons,” said Joan Guix, Catalunya government’s health chief.

It is the second Spanish-Italian Champions League fixture at which supporters have been banned, following Valencia versus Atalanta on Tuesday.

Sevilla’s match against Roma and Getafe’s game with Inter Milan in the Europa League have suffered the same fate.

Paris St-Germain’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday will also be closed to fans.

All sport in Italy has been suspended until at least 3 April because of coronavirus. The ruling includes Serie A matches but not Italian clubs or national teams participating in international competitions.

Manchester United’s Europa League last-16 first leg match at LASK Linz in Austria on Thursday could also be played without fans being admitted.

  • China to ease travel curbs within locked-down province

Hard-hit Hubei, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in China, will relax travel restrictions to allow healthy people to move within the province, officials said Tuesday.

Hubei has been under lockdown since January with some 56 million people under quarantine, but the number of cases has declined in recent weeks.

According to the provincial government, a mobile app will be used to give residents a coloured health code, and people labelled “green” in medium and low-risk areas will be allowed to travel within the province.

There is no indication that people can leave the province, and the measures also did not appear to loosen restrictions in Hubei’s capital, Wuhan.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made his first visit to the city since it emerged as the epicentre of the coronavirus crisis in January.

Only green code holders — meaning no contact with any cases — will be allowed to travel, and only if they are from low or medium risk areas, officials said.

Confirmed or suspected cases will get a red code, while a yellow code indicates close contact with a confirmed case.

Anyone given a red code must be quarantined.

Cities, counties and districts with no newly confirmed cases in the last two weeks are classified as low-risk regions.

On Tuesday there were only 17 new cases reported in Hubei province, all in Wuhan.

Most of China’s 3,136 coronavirus deaths and 80,754 cases came from Hubei, with the majority in Wuhan.

  • Gov’t can’t intervene in reduction of fuel prices – Nana Damoah

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Energy, Nana Damoah says the government cannot intervene in the reduction of fuel prices.

Responding to calls for a reduction in fuel prices in the country to reflect the global reduction in crude, Nana Damoah said the price regulation policy will not allow the government to intervene for a reduction in fuel prices.

He said the next pricing window is on March 16 and he is hopeful the pricing will reflect the reduction on the global market.

“Let me explained that since June 2015 Ghana has been implementing a price regulation policy now what this means is that government is no more responsible for the price setting of petroleum products however we have some price indicators the petroleum price formula which everybody is aware of unfortunately for us in the building of that policy we decided that we are going to do reviews based on a bi-weekly policy..”

“Prices are reviewed every two weeks so whatever happened on the world market we have some stability but we can only review prices within two weeks, the next pricing window opens on the 16 of March government, therefore, government can not intervene at this point to cause a reduction in prices against the stated policy of deregulation.”

COPEC demands a 10% reduction in fuel prices

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, COPEC, is demanding a 10% reduction in fuel prices from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The demand of COPEC follows the sustained decline in global crude oil prices.

The decrease has been attributed to the price war between Russia and Suadi Arabia as well as the spread of the coronavirus.

According to COPEC, consumers could be benefitting from a reduction of between 10%-32% compared to the 2% that consumers have been given over the past few weeks.

Chief Executive for COPEC Duncan Amoah added, the global price is expected to decrease further and it must reflect in our fuel prices in Ghana.

“In fact, if these petroleum service providers will be fair to all of us, anything below 10% will not be fair because your numbers as they speak, your prices are still dropping and it is expected that it will drop even further because Russia and Suadi are not done yet. ….technology is also going to suffer in one way or the other because the major producers will want to flood the market to kill the American production, will the Americans back down or they will also want to flood the market further.”

  • Sogakope residents demand interdiction of police officers

Residents of Sogakope in the Volta Region are unhappy with the response given by the police after the arrest of two officers over some missing rifles.

The rifles were said to have been used in the murder of the Assemblyman for Sogakope South Electoral Area, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, on Sunday, March 1.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Volta Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, the pick up of two officers was not in connection with the murder.

“Yes, two police officers were picked up but not involved in the assemblyman murder case,” Corporal Prince Dogbatse told 3news.com Sunday.

Before then, four civilians had been arrested to aid investigations.

A statement issued by the residents said while the police were quick to arraign the civilians before a judge, they exonerated their own “in a dramatic turn”.

“There was no proper investigation leading to the statement issued by the Volta Regional Police PR,” the statement issued by Spokesperson Maxwell Lukutor said.

“We implore the IGP and the several security Ministers to ensure that there are no underhand dealings in this case. Their actions should earn the police service especially within the Volta Region and Sogakope, in particular, some trust for once.”

They want the police PRO to be “very circumspect in his utterances not to incur the displeasure of the citizenry who are reading reasoned meaning into their actions and inactions”.

Among other demands including asking for the resignation of the District Chief Executive, the residents want all the arrested including the police officers to be immediately “interdicted and prosecuted for their actions and inactions”.

“Once again we wish to state that, our eagle eyes are still wide open even as we mourn our colleague, but the police should dare not push anything down our throats. We shall continue to fight until all the perpetrators are brought to book.”

  • Nigerian tests positive to coronavirus in U.S.

A Nigerian has tested positive to Covid-19 (coronavirus) in Washington, US, the Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, said on Saturday.

Today News Africa reported that Ms Bowser said the Nigerian man spent time in Washington DC and tested positive for Covid-19 at a hospital in neighbourhood Maryland.

She said the Nigerian does not live in DC, but travelled to the area from Nigeria where he had been staying with relatives before he fell ill. She, however. did not give further details.

Ms Bowser gave the information when updating the public on the first presumptive case in Washington.

She said there were two cases in Washington – the first one was a Nigerian who spent time in Washington DC and tested positive in Maryland, while the second case was that of a DC resident in his 50s who tested positive and has been hospitalized in the district.

The DC resident is the first to test positive for Covid-19 in Washington.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has also been recording increasing numbers of cases in the last weeks.

The U.S. recorded the first confirmed death from coronavirus on February 29.

The man in his 50s had underlying health conditions, and there was no evidence he had close contact with an infected person or a relevant travel history that would have exposed him to the virus.

Now the rapidly-spreading virus has killed 19 people in the U.S. and affected more than 30 states and the District of Columbia, turning into a health crisis.

Federal health officials announced the first case of coronavirus in the U.S. on January 20. The patient was in Washington state, and had just returned five days prior from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak started.

The outbreak in the U.S. has been raising alarms among its citizens as many of them are not happy with the way the Trump administration was handling the outbreak.

However, the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said Friday that he was “confident” that the United States would handle the novel coronavirus “better than any nation in the world.”

Mr Pompeo expressed the optimism during an interview with CNBC, in response to a question about whether the U.S. response could as good as that of China without interfering with people’s civil liberties. China imposed severe restrictions on travel in an effort to contain the virus.

“I’m confident we can handle it here. I’m confident we’ll handle it better than any nation in the world,” Mr Pompeo said.

  • Coronavirus: US Republicans self-quarantine amid outbreak

Five senior US Republicans have quarantined themselves after coming into contact with a person who tested positive for coronavirus.

The members of Congress, who include Texas Senator Ted Cruz, self-isolated after they shook hands with an infected individual at a conference.

President Donald Trump, who was also at the event last month, insists he is in good health and has not taken a test.

One Democrat has also self-isolated after she met someone with the virus.

There are more than 700 confirmed cases in the US and 26 people have died so far.

Mr Cruz, Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar, Georgia Congressman Doug Collins and Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz are all self-quarantining for the recommended 14-days after they met the same infected person at CPAC, a conservative political conference, at the end of February.

Republican Representative Mark Meadows, President Donald Trump’s newly appointed chief of staff, also met the person and is in self-quarantine. He is not exhibiting any symptoms and a precautionary test came back negative, a spokesman said.

Mr Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence attended the same event in Maryland but neither of them interacted with the individual. Mr Trump did shake hands with the conference chairman who had had contact with the patient.

But, on Monday, the White House announced that Mr Trump had not been tested for the virus. “He has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed Covid-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms,” a spokeswoman said.

“President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him,” she added.

What else did the White House say?

The White House announcement came as it warned the number of cases in the US was likely to rise. “There will be more cases,” Mr Pence told reporters. “But we simply ask today for the American people to engage in the common sense practices.”

The vice-president, who also confirmed he had not been tested for the virus, said the administration was consulting Congress on providing paid sick leave to workers.

US President Donald Trump and VP Mike Pence are pictured at Monday's press briefing
President Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence have not been tested for the virus

Separately, in brief remarks, Mr Trump said he would take “major” steps to protect the economy against the impact of the outbreak. “We’ll be discussing a possible payroll tax cut or relief, substantial relief,” he told reporters.

He did not provide further details on his plans, but said there would be a news conference on Tuesday.

“This blindsided the world, and I think we’ve handled it very, very well,” he said of the virus.

The president’s comments came as stock markets plunged. Shares around the world had their worst day since the financial crisis on Monday, and analysts described the market reaction to the coronavirus as “utter carnage”.

What’s the latest in the US?

Cases of the virus have been recorded in 34 states plus Washington DC.

There have been 738 confirmed cases and 26 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, passengers aboard a virus-hit cruise liner in California have begun disembarking after being kept off the coast of San Francisco for five days.

    Grand Princess cruise ship
The Grand Princess has 21 cases of coronavirus on board

Nineteen crew members and two passengers on the Grand Princess have tested positive for Covid-19. Most of the passengers will go into quarantine at military bases or, if they require more immediate medical attention, nearby hospitals.

Several hundred foreign passengers, including 140 Britons, will be repatriated to their home countries.

The ship’s crew members will remain quarantined on board, which will depart from Oakland as soon as the passengers have disembarked, officials said.

The cruise ship came to the attention of the authorities when a previous voyager on the vessel died last week after being stricken by the coronavirus.

The 71-year-old, who had an underlying health condition, had been on a round trip from San Francisco to Mexico.

    What about elsewhere?

In neighbouring Canada, as of Monday morning, there were 76 confirmed or presumptive cases of people carrying the coronavirus disease. There was one confirmed death in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Most of the cases are in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, though some have also been discovered in Quebec and Alberta.

Canadian public health officials are advising against all cruise ship travel. Just last week, Canadian passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship were released from quarantine.

Italy now has the highest number of confirmed infections outside China, where the outbreak originated in December. It has confirmed 7,375 cases and overtaken South Korea, where the total number is 7,313.

  • GPL Week 14 Preview: AshantiGold SC vs. Bechem United

AshantiGold SC will have the chance to go top of the league log on Wednesday when they host Bechem United at the Len Clay stadium.

A 6-1 embarrassing defeat to WAFA SC and a draw against Aduana Stars dropped the Miners from the summit to the 5th place with just two points difference.

AshantiGold have not been convincing enough in the last three home games as they have won 1-0 in each of them.

Another 1-0 win over the Hunters in the midweek wouldn’t be best but would be very essential for the team to regain confidence.

Thomas Duah who took over as the new assistant of the club replacing Yakubu Sheriff Mambo will be leading the Gold and Black side at home for the first time.

Right back Kwadwo Amoako is expected to return to the squad after serving a match suspension last weekend.

Bechem United will be looking a relief as they trek to Obuasi for the Week 14 fixture against AshantiGold SC.

The Hunters are coming from the back of back-to-back games without a win and will hoping to end the winless streak on Wednesday.

Bechem United have lost their grip as they have managed a single win from their last league matches which has been sink on the league standings.

It was all joy for the Hunters in their last league visit to Obuasi where they beat AshantiGold SC by 4-2 in the end.

Goalkeeper and skipper Prince Asempa was sidelined last weekend following his unpardonable errors in their 3-1 defeat to Asante Kotoko SC a fortnight ago.

Daniel Afadwu is expected to remain in the posts for Wednesday’s fixture.

Defender Emmanuel Asante is back from suspension and is available for selection for this match.

  • Taiwan students fight virus with Lego disinfectant dispenser

Students at an elementary school in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung have found their own unique way to fight the coronavirus and stay ahead of the curve in epidemic prevention – an automated disinfectant dispenser built from Lego.

Children ranging from six to 12 years old use every school break and any chance they can get to line up to use their self-built alcohol disinfectant robot that some of their peers have assembled under the guidance of their robotics coach.

“Washing hands is super,” shouts a recorded voice after the dispenser senses a pair of hands in front of its ultrasonic sensor and dispenses alcohol disinfectant from a spray bottle by pulling back its handle with a motor and gearwheel mechanism.

Next to the robot, there are scenes crafted by the younger students showing various situations that require the washing of hands: an operating table in a hospital, a toilet and a flower garden.

One year after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, teachers at the Linyuan Elementary School decided the students should learn about the basic principals of robotics.

The school is situated in an industrial area, dominated by the petrochemical sector.

Teachers wanted to teach the children to be able to solve problems in their hometown in the future – such as fire, air pollution and gas explosions.

Since then, the school has represented Taiwan in many international competitions abroad and won several prizes with its robotics club.

While Taiwan has only recorded 45 cases of the coronavirus, compared with more than 80,000 on the other side of the Taiwan Strait in China, the island is on high alert to prevent further infections.

  • Life without a father; Ghana’s Ati Zigi shares experience

Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi how hard life has been without his dad, who died eleven years back.

The 23 years old is having a wonderful season at St.Gallen and has been taking a look back at how life would have been with his dad around.

“It was hard when father died, but God helped me to cope with it.”

As a sign of his belief, the goalie wears a chain with a silver cross around his neck. God is the center of his life, he says.

In an article published by tagblatt.ch, the Ghanaian talked about his early life in Ghana.

It was a coincidence that he became a goalie. No one had wanted to stand in the goal as part of their childhood team. So Zigi complied with the circumstances, soon triumphed once and brought the clubs to attention. He moved to the Red Bull Academy in Sogakope in southern Ghana, seven years ago he followed the call from Austria.

Zigi does not hide the fact that he misses the family. He maintains contact via Skype or phone. However, relatives cannot visit him because they are subject to a visa. “It would be very complicated, even for a few days,” says the footballer, who speaks three languages ??and five Ghanaian dialects. The goalkeeper doesn’t feel lonely in St.Gallen. He has known team-mate Musah Nuhu for a long time from times spent together in the national team. And about coach Zeidler, Zigi says: “He is like a father to me.”

Lawrence Ati Zigi only needed five games to become a crowd favorite in St.Gallen. But the run is interrupted.

Lawrence Ati Zigi is a good draftsman. As a child he often used colored pencils. The goalkeeper paints landscapes, people and animals. “Simply everything,” says the Ghanaian. Drawing is a soothing hobby. It forms a counterpoint to the stirring, crazy days that the 23-year-old has lived through in St.Gallen so far.

Actually Zigi and his teammates wanted to continue after the emotional 3: 3 against the Young Boys, march on and keep the league in suspense. But because of the ban on major events due to the Corona virus, the championship is interrupted.

If the decision is not revoked on March 15, Zigi will be in a serious fight for St. Gallen at the beginning of April at the earliest. Of course, the compulsory break is not convenient for the strong-looking Eastern Swiss. “It is a shame that we cannot prove ourselves again right away,” says the five-time Ghanaian international.

Centimeters were missing and Zigi would have been the hero Almost two weeks have passed since the game against the Young Boys. It was only inches away and Zigi would have been the hero of the afternoon. He would have been celebrated because he would have saved FC St.Gallen’s 3-2 victory against the champions in injury time in the Tollhaus Kybunpark.

Perhaps the teammates would have taken him on the shoulders and carried him across the lawn. But because the video referee of the euphoria pulled the plug, the game ended in a draw.

FC St.Gallen is also a leader during the forced break, from the top games against Basel, Servette and the Young Boys, he scored seven points. Zigi contributed a lot to this stability. The African was a strong support right from the start and quickly became the crowd favorite thanks to some spectacular bailouts. Otto Pfister, who has worked in more than ten countries on the African continent, is not surprised at Zigi’s development.

“I knew that if you took good care of him, it would be a really good thing.” One of the strengths of African footballers is that they don’t get anything upset – neither a defeat nor a goal. “They never freak out because they are mentally strong,” said the 82-year-old. They also have an innate feeling for the situation. “One of their strengths is anticipation,” says Pfister, who led the Ghana national team to the 1992 African Cup final.

Before the start of the second half of the season, they were worried that changing the goalie in a short break can be a delicate matter. After Dejan Stojanovic informed St.Gallen’s manager at the training camp in Spain that he would accept the offer from Middlesbrough, the situation deteriorated because both Jonathan Klinsmann and Nico Strübi were injured.

But sports director Alain Sutter and trainer Peter Zeidler had an ace up their sleeve, Zigi had been on her note for a long time. Nevertheless, they left the final assessment to goalie coach Stefano Razzetti. Razzetti watched three goalkeepers on video and said after studying Zigi:

“The one and no one else.”

The father died when Zigi was twelve

Sutter and Zeidler saw themselves confirmed. Because especially the trainer is considered a long-term sponsor of the 1.89 m tall goalie. On his recommendation, Red Bull brought the young Ghanaian to Austria seven years ago, where he was first integrated into a youth academy of the beverage giant and later played under Zeidler for the Liefering partner club in the second-highest league. The goalkeeper also followed Zeidler to Salzburg and Sochaux.

Zigi comes from medium-sized companies. “We had a good time.” When he was twelve, however, the family suffered a stroke of fate. The father died at the age of 44 from a serious illness. Zigi grew up with his mother and grandmother and with two sisters. But the Christian faith is deeply rooted in the family. The footballer says:

“It was hard when father died, but God helped me to cope with it.” As a sign of his belief, the goalie wears a chain with a silver cross around his neck. God is the center of his life, he says.

For Zigi, Zeidler is like a father

Zigi does not hide the fact that he misses the family. He maintains contact via Skype or phone. However, relatives cannot visit him because they are subject to a visa. “It would be very complicated, even for a few days,” says the footballer, who speaks three languages ??and five Ghanaian dialects. The goalkeeper doesn’t feel lonely in St.Gallen. He has known team-mate Musah Nuhu for a long time from times spent together in the national team. • Erdogan demands ‘concrete support’ from EU, NATO over Syria

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded more support from his NATO and EU allies over the war in Syria as fighting rages in Idlib, and a refugee crisis unfolds at the Turkish-Greek border.

Erdogan flew to Brussels for talks with the European Union and NATO leaders after tension rose over the fate of tens of thousands of refugees trying to enter EU-member Greece since Ankara said last month it would no longer try to keep them on its soil.

After talks on Monday with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Erdogan said he wants Turkey’s Western partners to do more to support his country to cope with millions of refugees from Syria.

“The crisis stemming from Syria, with its security and humanitarian aspects, is threatening our region and even all of Europe,” Erdogan said. “No European country has the luxury to remain indifferent.”

Thousands of people have massed at Turkey’s land border with EU-member Greece since Erdogan’s government made good on a long-standing threat and announced it would no longer prevent migrants from crossing.

    ‘Critical period’

The president made the move after dozens of Turkish troops were killed in intensifying fighting in Syria’s northwestern region of Idlib amid a government offensive – backed by Russian airpower – to recapture the last rebel stronghold in the nine-year war.

“We expect concrete support from all our allies in the fight that Turkey has been carrying out alone … NATO is in a critical period during which it needs to clearly show support,” Erdogan told reporters standing alongside Stoltenberg.

They have urged the Turkish leader to halt refugee and migrant departures and negotiate a new deal under which EU members would do more to alleviate the humanitarian situation on the Syrian border.

“The events at the Greek-Turkish border clearly point to politically motivated pressure on the EU’s external border,” the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said before talks with Erdogan.

“Finding a solution to this situation will require relieving the pressure that is put on the border.”

    ‘More than money’

Turkey hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees, and Erdogan has demanded that Europe shoulder more of the burden of caring for them.

Erdogan was due to hold talks with EU leaders Charles Michel and von der Leyen who are expected to insist that Turkey adhere to the joint refugee agreement of 2016.

The EU-Turkey agreement of 2016 stipulates that Ankara will prevent undocumented migration towards the EU. In return, the 27-nation bloc promised six billion euros ($6.8bn dollars) to care for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Al Jazeera’s Natasha Ghoneim, reporting from the Turkish city of Erdine on the border with Greece, said: “Erdogan had been asking NATO to give Turkey support on the battlefield and that is something he is likely to bring up during his meetings with NATO and EU leaders.

“Analyst say they do not expect him to simply resume abiding by that 2016 agreement with the European Union for billions of dollars in exchange for strict control at the borders. They say Erdogan wants to see the EU doing more than just providing financial assistance.”

Erdogan had already given NATO a list of 10 requests including greater air support on the Turkish-Syrian border, more reconnaissance aircraft, surveillance drones, and more ships in the eastern Mediterranean, according to diplomatic sources.

    ‘Common solutions’

On Monday, Stoltenberg said the alliance was already supporting Turkey and would continue to do so.

Stoltenberg also highlighted Turkey’s front-line role as a NATO member, saying: “No other ally has suffered more from terrorist attacks, and no other ally holds more refugees.”

He said NATO support would continue but expressed “great concern” about events on the Turkish-Greek border. “The issue of migration and refugee flows is a common challenge that requires common solutions,” he said.

European leaders are considering taking in 1,500 child refugees to ease pressure on overwhelmed camps on Greek islands facing a new wave of arrivals from Turkey.

Von der Leyen said there was no immediate concrete offer of new funding to revive a deal with Turkey to keep refugees from Syria and beyond.

“We will restart the dialogue,” she said, adding there would be “considerable discussions in the next few days and weeks”.

In 2016, Turkey and the EU agreed to a deal whereby Brussels would provide billions of euros in aid in exchange for Turkey curbing the flow of migrants.

But Ankara has repeatedly accused the bloc of not fulfilling promises made as Europe suffered its worst refugee crisis since World War II, when one million people fled to the continent in 2015.

  • Akonnor beats Kotoko

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has ruled in favour of Black Stars coach CK Akonnor in relation to a legal dispute between the 45-year-old and former employers Asante Kotoko.

After an abrupt end to his tenure as head coach of the Porcupine Warriors, the coach hauled the club before the Player Status Committee of the GFA for a breach of contract.

Subsequently, the Status Committee found the club guilty of wrongful contract termination.

“The Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has upheld the decision of the Player Status Committee with respect to the contractual dispute between Coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor and Asante Kotoko SC,” the GFA announced on its official website on Monday.

“It would be recalled that the Player Status Committee found Asante Kotoko guilty of breaches in the contract with Akonnor and asked the club to pay him compensation.

“The ruling of the Appeals Committee has been communicated to both parties.”

Akonnor lost his job as Kotoko head coach in July last year, only nine months into a three-year contract.

The disgruntled coach then dragged the Porcupine Warriors to the GFA Player Status Committee, demanding salary for two years, league trophy cash, and Caf Confederations Cup group stage entitlements.

  • Tony Yeboah plays down Jordan Ayew comparison

Former Leeds United forward Anthony Yeboah has highlighted the uniqueness of his status as Ghana’s joint-record top scorer in the English Premier League.

Comparisons between the now 53-year-old and compatriot Jordan Ayew have emerged after the latter netted a match-winner for Crystal Palace in a clash with Watford on Saturday to go level on goals with the former.

While both men have 24 goals to their names, Yeboah achieved the feat in only 47 matches. Ayew, on the other hand, made his 128th appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 triumph.

“If you compare my games to Jordan’s, it tells you I had fewer games. I played 47 matches, scoring 24 goals in two and half years for Leeds United,” Yeboah told Angel FM.

“[The English Premier League] is not a small league but Jordan scoring 24 goals means that the future is bright for him despite playing more matches than me.

“Looking at his age, he can add more goals if he continues to play in the Premier League.

“But for now, if you compare my statistics with him, you can see some sort of differences between us.”

Yeboah spent two years on the books of then-Premier League outfit Leeds, from 1995 to 1997.

Ayew, on the other hand, is in his fifth season in the English top-flight, having also previously played for Aston Villa and Swansea City.

With the exception of a half-season Championship spell with Villa in 2016-2017, the 28-year-old has played in the Premier League since moving from France to England in 2015.

  • Trump has not been tested for coronavirus – White House

President Donald Trump has not been tested for coronavirus, the White House said Monday, despite indirect contact through at least two lawmakers.

White House officials announced late Monday that the president had not been tested after a series of encounters with lawmakers who had contact with others who had tested positive for the virus. Top among those was Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who announced he was placing himself in quarantine less than an hour after getting off Air Force One.

“The president has not received COVID-19 testing because he has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed COVID-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said. “President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him.”

During a briefing at the White House on Monday, Vice President Mike Pence said he didn’t know whether or not the president was tested. Pence said he was not tested.

“I’ve had no recommendation that I will be tested,” Pence said.

“The White House physicians, their directive is to see to the health and well-being of the president of the United States.”

Though there is zero indication the president has been exposed to the virus there have been several circumstances in which it has come close to him. Gaetz said Monday that he had come into contact with a person who tested positive at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland late last month. He flew with Trump aboard Air Force One from Florida back to Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C., on Monday.

Days before Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., announced he had placed himself in quarantine, he was seen meeting with Trump at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, shaking the president’s hands on the tarmac before the visit.

Both Collins and Gaetz said they had no symptoms.

A self-acknowledged germophobe who is said to frequently slather his hands with sanitizer, Trump recently told Fox News there is no way to politely avoid shaking hands.

“You can’t be a politician and not shake hands,” Trump said at the town hall in Scranton, Pa., on Thursday. “The bottom line is, I shake anybody’s hand now. I’m proud of it.”

  • Besiktas attacker KP Boateng hails teammate Burak Yilmaz

Ghanaian attacker Kevin-Prince Boateng has hailed Besiktas teammate Burak Yilmaz as one of the best players he has played with.

According to Kevin, with his experience of playing in top leagues in Spain, Germany, England and Italy, Yilmaz is one of the clever strikers.

He is however disappointed the 34-year-old hasn’t been recognized by top European teams.

“I have played in many big teams in Europe. I have seen many strikers as you but not as clever as you. It is really disappointing for me not[top clubs] give you a chance, not see you,” Boateng said after Besiktas 2-1 win over Ankaragücü.

Yilmaz was on target in that match. He has scored 12 goals and has 3 assists in 20 appearances this season.

  • Jordan Ayew makes BBC Premier League team of the week

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew has made it to the BBC Premier League Team of the Week after an impressive showing in the league this past weekend.

Ayew scored the winner as Crystal Palace earned their third straight victory by beating Watford 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

BC football analyst Garth Crooks who picked the team said; “He scored against Brighton last week and again against Watford. It’s a good job Jordan Ayew has netted eight times for Crystal Palace this season because without his goals the Eagles wouldn’t have landed 39 points with nine games to spare, and instead crashed and burned.

I accept Christian Benteke is coming into some form (which is good to see) and Wilfried Zaha continues to give defences palpitations, which all helps, but neither Benteke or Zaha can finish. And if I see Zaha trying to do the twist in order to use his right foot to score a goal I will scream. Swing the left!”

The goal is the 28-year-old’s eighth strike of the season.

  • Ghana’s education curriculum needs a re-look – Expert

Director for University of Allied Management (UAM) Prof. Martin Gyambrah, has proposed a re-look at Ghana’s curriculum.

According to him, global decisions affecting people across the world has made it imperative to attach importance to international education to enable develop a sustainable development mindset.

He is proposing for a curriculum that focuses not only on Ghana but on global issues and learning processes that develops relevant global thinking.

Speaking at the 8th graduation ceremony of UAM on the theme: ‘International Education: A tool for sustainable development’, he said, sustainability is a key need to our world today.

Prof. Gyambrah noted that global terrain of health, education, environment, governance, high resources depleting and global crises confronted makes it imperative that Ghana develops a sustainability mindset and attitude aimed at making the world a better place.

“It is now obvious that whatever happens on the world street, whatever decisions are being made in the parliament of Shanghai, in Guangzhou, whatever decisions are taken place in the United Nations headquarters, whatever meetings and activities that transpire across the entire globe has massive implications for the continuous existence of our world. So we cannot choose to isolate ourselves and deem ourselves not to be active agents and partners of the international economy,” he stated.

In his view, international education expands perspectives, equips with relevant competencies and make one globally compliant to the global economy.

“Essentially, if we seek to develop international education, it calls for an international curriculum that recognises the problems of the world, it calls for the adoption of modern modules of delivering education that provides the relevant flexibility,” he added.

  • Burkina Faso confirms two coronavirus cases

Burkina Faso on Monday reported its first two coronavirus cases in a local couple who returned from France last month.

Burkinabè Health minister Claudine Lougue told a press conference that the two, a 73-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, had been quarantined following positive tests for the virus.

A third person who is suspected to have been in direct contact with the couple is also under observation.

Burkina Faso becomes the sixth country in sub-Saharan Africa to record at least one positive case of the virus after Cameroon, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Togo.

Algeria, Egypt and Morocco have also confirmed positive cases of the coronavirus in North Africa.

  • NDC calls for immediate and drastic reduction of fuel prices

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a matter of urgency is demanding an immediate and drastic reduction of minimum 20% in the pump prices of fuel from the ruling NPP government.

In a statement signed by the communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, he stated that; “the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, coupled with the artificial stability the Ghana cedi appears to be chalking, which is largely due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the injection of the recent $3 billion Eurobond into the economy, should have led to a significant drop in the pump prices of fuel by now.”

He indicated that; “the Akufo-Addo government has deliberately refused to pass on the significant reduction in the prices of crude oil on the global market to petroleum consumers in Ghana…within the period that crude oil prices have experienced a significant decline on the international market, consumers have only been given an insignificant and paltry reduction of 28 pesewas at the pump, from Ghs 5.62 in January 2020 to the current average price of Ghs 5.38.”

“We call on the President to as a matter of urgency, ensure an immediate and drastic reduction of minimum 20% in the pump prices of fuel. Anything short of this should be fiercely rejected by the Ghanaian people. This, we believe, will reduce the extreme economic hardship in the country and ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians,” portion of the statement read.

    Read full statement below;

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken notice of the continuous reduction of the price of Brent crude on the international market in the last two (2) months. Specifically, we have noted how the price of Brent crude has declined by over 45%, from an average price of $63.60 per barrel in January 2020 to $36 per barrel currently.

There is no gainsaying the fact that, the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, coupled with the artificial stability the Ghana cedi appears to be chalking, which is largely due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the injection of the recent $3 billion Eurobond into the economy, should have led to a significant drop in the pump prices of fuel by now.

Unfortunately but predictably, the Akufo-Addo government has deliberately refused to pass on the significant reduction in the prices of crude oil on the global market to petroleum consumers in Ghana. Within the period that crude oil prices have experienced a significant decline on the international market, consumers have only been given an insignificant and paltry reduction of 28 pesewas at the pump, from Ghs 5.62 in January 2020 to the current average price of Ghs 5.38.

This is callous and insulting to the sensibilities of Ghanaians who are going through excruciating hardships as a result of persistent increases in the pump prices of fuel, cumulatively by over 50% in three (3) years, especially given the fact that President Akufo-Addo whilst in opposition criticized the erstwhile Mahama regime for exorbitant fuel prices and promised to reduce same if elected.

The NDC is appalled by this display of gross insensitivity by President Akufo-Addo who has consistently flattered to deceive on his promise to reduce fuel prices and all his flagship campaign promises.

In line with current happenings on the international and local market, we call on the President to as a matter of urgency, ensure an immediate and drastic reduction of minimum 20% in the pump prices of fuel. Anything short of this should be fiercely rejected by the Ghanaian people. This, we believe, will reduce the extreme economic hardship in the country and ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians.
