  • NHIA issued 14-day ultimatum to reveal health facilities it had paid arrears

The Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association (PIWA) says it has given the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) a 14 working-day ultimatum to furnish them with the list of health facilities it had paid to enable its members to access their one-year arrears.

According to a statement issued by the Executive Secretary of PIWA and sighted by GhanaWeb, contrary to claims by the NHIA that it had authorized disbursement, some health facilities across the country have denied any payment from the NHIA following their locked-up funds in a number of facilities.

Executive Secretary for PIWA, Joe Fiifi Yamoah, noted; “Failing this, we would advise ourselves on the next line of action to take to ensure that these health facilities settle their indebtedness to all our members.”

“We therefore request that the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and the National Health Insurance Scheme to provide us with the list of payments they claim to have made to health facilities to enable us claim our over one year arrears so as not to compel us to take legal action against the affected health facilities,” the statement said.

The statement added that members of PIWA have constantly been faced with the threat of laying off staff and closure of businesses which is detrimental to the nature of their business with some placing in bids to access the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) which is expected to kick off this year.

“Since the NHIS itself is under the Ministry of Health, we would want the Minister of Health and the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to aid us in unraveling the truth to avoid any friction between us and the NHIS,” it further added.

The association also says there was an existing three-month waiting period within which health facilities processed their claims for onward submission to the NHIA for payments and for the NHIA to admit they owed six months arrears was totally unacceptable.

“Any delay in our payments adversely affects the credibility we have with our bankers and suppliers both locally and foreign which does not augur well for the growth of any business,” it held.

Earlier last month, the Chamber of Pharmacy Ghana served notice to its members that it would no longer continue to supply drugs and medicines on credit to National Health Insurance accredited health facilities.

According to the Chamber, it will withdraw its services following indebtedness by the service providers and will only rescind its decision until their debts are paid in full.

  • US restricting all travel from Europe over coronavirus

The U.S. will restrict all travel from Europe with the exception of the U.K. starting later this week in an effort to curtail the spread of the new coronavirus, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday evening.

Addressing the nation from the Oval Office, Trump said the restrictions, which will go into effect on Friday, “will be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground,” and exemptions would be made for U.S. nationals “who have undergone appropriate screenings.”

“We made a life-saving move with early action on China. Now we must take the same action with Europe. We will not delay,” he said.

The announcement comes on the same day the World Health Organization officially termed the spread of COVID-19 a global pandemic and as the U.S. capital declared a state of emergency.

  • Klopp questions Atletico Madrid style after Liverpool exit

Jurgen Klopp admitted it was difficult to explain how Liverpool exited the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, and doesn’t understand why the Spaniards “play like that”.

A defensive Atletico rode their luck in large parts at Anfield, but came from 2-0 down to win 3-2, progressing to the quarter-final 4-2 on aggregate, with Adrian at fault for at least one of their goals.

Klopp seemed dumbfounded by the result after the game, questioning Atletico’s playing style, but still insisted he was happy with Liverpool’s performance, with the Reds registering 35 shots on goal.

“We saw all the goals we conceded, we shouldn’t concede these kind of goals,” he told BT Sport. “Tonight, it is difficult to explain these goals, but it is like it is.

“I don’t understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter-attacks.

“I realise I am a really bad loser, especially when the boys put such an effort in against world-class players on the other side who defend with two rows of four. It doesn’t feel right tonight, to be honest.”

He then said in his post-match press conference: “I am a really under-average loser, to be honest, at least tonight. I could say a lot of things and I would look like the worst loser in the world. The way they play I just don’t get it. But the winner is right. That is how it is.”

Referring to Adrian’s miscued kick to Joao Felix, who then fed Marcos Llorente to score to make it 2-1 on the night, Klopp said: “We score the second goal and then everyone sees their first goal. The pass was not really helpful.

“Adrian is a lovely boy but in this moment he makes the wrong decision. In that moment, usually conceding a goal is part of football and shouldn’t have a massive influence. But in this moment, the

momentum changed. Before that, Madrid were wondering how they should cope. Before that, everything felt natural for us. Then we became a bit stiff and they became a bit fresher in the legs. They score two goals.”

Klopp admitted after the game that Liverpool had rode their own luck in Europe in previous seasons, reaching the final in the last two years and winning last term.

This time, luck was against them, but Klopp did not wish to complain.

“We have had lucky moments in the Champions League before. Most of the time we really deserved it, but we had some lucky moments as well. Tonight we are out. Atletico won both games, they deserve it. Everybody knows we will go again. We will come again.”

There will be criticism of Adrian, who played in place of the injured Alisson, in the aftermath of the game, but Klopp urged his critics to stay respectful.

“Come on, he is a man and he knows. We don’t blame him for a second. What you do, I don’t know about you, but stay respectful, that would be nice. He has saved us in so many moments since he has been here. He has had super performances. This goal didn’t help but that’s how it is.

“If you lose a game you always lose it for some reason. Tonight, this was not the moment when we lost the game. It had an impact but it was one goal. We conceded two more goals after that. We didn’t score the goals. There were plenty of reasons why we didn’t go through.

“But always when you are in the public, people will judge you. But he’s a man, a grown man, and he will live with that.”

  • WHO declares COVID-19 outbreak as pandemic

The coronavirus outbreak has been labelled a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the number of cases outside China had increased 13-fold over the past two weeks.

He said he was “deeply concerned” by “alarming levels of inaction” over the virus.

A pandemic is a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.

However, Dr Tedros said that calling the outbreak a pandemic did not mean the WHO was changing its advice about what countries should do.

He called on governments to change the course of the outbreak by taking “urgent and aggressive action”.

“Several countries have demonstrated that this virus can be suppressed and controlled,” he said.

“The challenge for many countries who are now dealing with large clusters or community transmission is not whether they can do the same – it’s whether they will.”

Governments had to “strike a fine balance between protecting health, minimising disruption and respecting human rights”.

“We’re in this together to do the right things with calm and protect the citizens of the world. It’s doable,” he said.

Earlier, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that up to 70% of the country’s population – some 58 million people – could contract the coronavirus.

She said since there was no known cure, the focus would fall on slowing the spread of the virus. “It’s about winning time,” she said.

Some German virologists dispute the high figure. Former federal government adviser on disease control, Prof Alexander Kekulé, told German media he saw a worst case scenario of 40,000 cases.

to Iran but there was still a shortage of ventilators and oxygen.
“Iran and Italy are suffering now but I guarantee you other countries will be in that situation very soon,” he said.

    What else is happening?

In the western US, Washington state is banning some large gatherings in certain areas and has told all school districts to prepare for possible closures in the coming days. The governor of Seattle’s King County said he expected a serious coronavirus outbreak within weeks.

In the eastern US, New York’s governor announced that troops would be sent into New Rochelle, in an attempt to contain an outbreak of the virus, as the total number of US cases passed 1,000 on Wednesday.

A one-mile (1.6km) containment zone was in force around the town north of Manhattan. Some individuals have been quarantined.

A number of countries have imposed sweeping travel restrictions. India has suspended most visas for foreigners until 15 April. Guatemala is banning European citizens from entering from Thursday.

Several countries – including Sweden and Bulgaria, as well as the Republic of Ireland – have recorded their first deaths, while the number of confirmed cases in Qatar jumped from 24 to 262.

China – where the virus was first detected – has seen a total of 80,754 confirmed cases and 3,136 deaths. But it recorded its lowest number of new infections, just 19, on Tuesday.

According to worldometers.info, hosted by the American Library Association, the infectious disease has spread to more than 121 countries and territories and infected more than 124,000 people. More than 4, 580 people have died, while there have been about 67, 050 cases of recovery.

  • Italy confirms almost 200 deaths in 24 hours

Almost 200 people died from the coronavirus in 24 hours, Italy’s Civil Protection Agency confirmed Wednesday — the highest daily increase in absolute terms registered anywhere in the world since the respiratory illness emerged in China at the end of last year.

In response, the country’s prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, told reporters the government would allocate 25 billion euros ($28.3 billion) to help mitigate the impact on the fragile economy. Only a week ago, he estimated it would need just 7.5 billion.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, 196 people died, bringing the total number of deaths to 897, the Civil Protection Agency said in a statement. Confirmed cases across the country rose to 12,462 from a previous 10,149.

After an initial lockdown in the north failed to prevent the spread, the government on Monday banned all nonessential travel and public gatherings throughout Italy until April 3, halted all sports events and extended a shutdown of schools.

  • Maggot-infested filth engulfs Kaneshie Market as Accra is touted as clean

At a time when the Minister for Sanitation and the Mayor of Accra are describing sanitary conditions in the city as generally clean, the Kaneshie Market is being engulfed with filth.

The situation at the market is as a result of the inability of managers of the facility to get rid of seven days of accumulated waste.

Just like any other person who has been to the market in the last seven days, Ghanaweb reporters upon reaching the entrance of the market yesterday morning were greeted by the sight of a big pile of refuse stretching across a whole area. The reeking heap of filth which was clearly a source of discomfort for some women selling at the entrance of the market was also sprouting maggots to the disgust of people around.

The situation at the inner section of the Kaneshie market was, however, a contrast of the scene greeting shoppers who have come to buy from the market. It was realised by the GhanaWeb team that the inner parts of the market as compared to that of the entrance was far better and hygienic.

Speaking to some of the market women, they described the situation as an unpleasant one because everyone coming to the market comes through the entrance.
The women say for what has been a regular practice, refuse is collected from the market at dawn and deposited at the entrance for a waste management company to collect every morning. However, for the past seven days, no refuse management company has been to the market to collect the rubbish which has accumulated over the days.

For the market women who expressed worry about the situation, the continuous existence of the refuse at the market poses serious health risks to them, shoppers and the end consumers of their products.

They lamented how complaints in previous situations resulted in some of their colleagues being victimised or evicted by the market authorities. For fear of being threated same, the market women who spoke off-camera said they are hopeful the market authorities will do something about the rubbish which is posing risk to their health and business.

As at the time of filing this report, all attempts by GhanaWeb.com to speak to the market authorities on the issue had proved futile.

  • No government has ‘spiced up’ education like we have in the last 3 years NAPO brags

Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has professed that since time immemorial no government has been able to make education look attractive to Ghanaians as the NPP government has done.

According to him, after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) resumed office in 2017, the leadership spearheaded by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo deemed it worthy to make education their priority, hence, the introduction of the well-known Free Senior High School education to give room for all to attend SHS irrespective of their backgrounds.

He pointed out that President Akufo-Addo has been able to deliver his promise on revamping the educational sector by providing vehicles to MMDCEs, Ministry of Education, education directorates among others to aid their work in a bid to provide quality education.

The Education Minister stressed that “since 2017, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made education his priority and he believes fundamentally that Ghana would only prosper if education prospers and so he believes that opportunity and prosperity would only happen if we get education on a sound footage. …the last three years have witnessed a complete transformation of our educational sector. If it is to do with the infrastructure, we can boldly say since independence no government has put in place infrastructural development that the education is witnessing in the last three years”.

He made these comments at the Black Stars Square in Accra on Thursday during the distribution of 365 pickup trucks and 493 motorbikes to various districts of the Ghana Education Service (GES) by the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.

Out of the 365 Isuzu pickup trucks distributed, 206 have been allocated to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), 105 to the Ministry of Education and its various agencies. The remaining trucks will be given to some selected Senior High Schools.

The 493 motorbikes are to aid the work of circuit supervisors in various districts.

  • You can’t threaten us if incumbent is going unopposed – Obiri Boahen to NPP delegates

Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Obiri Boahen has dismissed threats by aggrieved delegates and supporters in the Akropong Constituency of the Eastern Region over their decision to boycott the NPP parliamentary primaries if Lawyer Philip Addison is not allowed to contest.

The decision follows the disqualification of Philip Addison and William Agyei Twumasi from the parliamentary primaries leaving the incumbent Member of Parliament, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah to go unopposed.

The two disqualified aspirants were part of 15 aspirants disqualified out of the 79 vetted in the Eastern Region.

Addressing the media at Akropong yesterday, March 11, 2020, the aggrieved delegates and supporters said the incumbent MP has become unpopular within the party and among the electorate at large and therefore would be suicidal for the NPP to impose her on the constituency.

The people contended that Mr. Addison has been contributing immensely to the party in the constituency, therefore, refuting claims by some party executives he has not nurtured the party well.

Commenting on the development on Starr FM today, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Obiri Boahen said: ”As for as the NPP, our support base is intact. Relax, we are talking about the party. You cannot threaten us that if the incumbent is to go unopposed you’re not going to vote then you are not participating actively in democracy. We are talking about democracy. The bottom line is that someone has been disqualified and there is an opportunity for the aggrieved person to appear before the respective authorities in the party so why do we worry ourselves about these things”? he quizzed.

Meanwhile, Political Scientist of the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu has cautioned the NPP as a matter of urgency to resolve the misunderstandings surrounding its parliamentary primaries.

”If they think they have a genuine case, some of them may have to go to court to drag the process and that can also undermine unity, these misunderstandings must be fixed”.

  • UK interest rates cut in emergency move

The Bank of England has announced an emergency cut in interest rates to shore up the economy amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Policymakers reduced rates from 0.75% to 0.25%, taking borrowing costs back down to the lowest level in history.

The Bank said it would also free up billions of pounds of extra lending power to help banks support firms.

It comes as the chancellor is expected to announce further measures to support growth and jobs in the Budget later.

    ‘Maximum Impact’

Mark Carney, the outgoing governor of the Bank of England, said policymakers had seen a “sharp fall in trading conditions”, including spending on non-essential goods.

“The Bank of England’s role is to help UK businesses and households manage through an economic shock that could prove large and sharp, but should be temporary,” he said.

He said the Bank’s co-ordinated action on Budget day was designed to have “maximum impact”.

Mr Carney stressed that the economic damage caused by the coronavirus remained unclear. However, he suggested that the UK economy could shrink in the coming months.

He said early evidence from China suggested that the world’s second-largest economy was on course to contract in the first quarter.

Other nations were experiencing a “similar shift”, he said.

“I would emphasize the direction is clear, though the orders of magnitude are still to be determined.”

While the Bank’s last emergency rate cut was in October 2008, Mr Carney said the virus was unlikely to inflict the damage seen during the financial crisis.

“There is no reason for it to be as bad as 2008 if we act as we have, and if there is that targeted support,” he said.
    Virus spread

The emergency rate cut comes as a sixth person who died from the virus in the UK, which has a total of 382 cases.

The latest person to die was a man in his early 80s who had underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Premier League match against Arsenal on Wednesday has been postponed as “a precautionary measure” because of the outbreak.

A number of Arsenal players are in self-isolation after coming into contact with Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who tested positive for the virus..

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged to help the UK battle the impact of the coronavirus, saying the NHS will get “whatever resources it needs” during the crisis, while he is also expected to unveil measures to boost the self-employed and small businesses who are left out of pocket.

Meanwhile, NHS England said it was scaling up its capacity for testing people for the infection, with the number of cases set to rise.

How will the rate cut affect your finances?

The sudden cut in the Bank rate will immediately reduce the mortgage bill of a minority of homeowners. Others will have to wait to see how their home loan provider reacts at a time when mortgage rates are already at very low levels.

Little will change for savers, who have had to endure years of low returns anyway. They may take heart from the fact this is a temporary measure from the Bank.

Most people are, of course, savers and borrowers.

As well as concern over their physical health from coronavirus, their financial health will primarily depend on their job.

This emergency action is clearly designed to help protect businesses, particularly small and medium-sized ones, and in turn the employment of millions of people.

    Extra lending

The interest rate cut was part of a package of measures introduced by the Bank to support the economy.

It also announced a new £100bn scheme to help ensure households and businesses – particularly small and medium-sized firms – benefit from the reduction in interest rates.

The Bank of England said other changes would free up an additional £190bn for banks to lend.

It said the package of measures would “help UK businesses and households bridge across the economic disruption that is likely to be associated with Covid-19”.

The Bank said it expected UK economic activity to “weaken materially” over the coming months, but it was ready to take “all further necessary steps to support the UK economy”.

“These measures will help to keep firms in business and people in jobs and help prevent a temporary disruption from causing longer-lasting economic harm.”

Initially, the pound fell against both the euro and the dollar in reaction to the rate cut, but then rebounded.

Share markets reacted positively, with the FTSE 100 rising more than 2% in early trading.

Separate data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed the UK economy stagnated in the three months to January.

The dramatic emergency rate cut will dominate the headlines, but it is the overall package of measures which the departing Bank of England governor Mark Carney will stress as a support for the economy in this extraordinary coronavirus crisis.

The key target of this move is the cash flow of small and medium-sized businesses, which could be hit by a combination of slumping demand, trade difficulties and staff absence.

The Bank and Treasury agree that this will be a temporary shock. The aim, therefore, is to prevent unnecessary permanent economic scars. Alongside Budget measures, it is designed as a bridge beyond the virus.

So the Bank’s base rate is slashed to its record low, first reached in the aftermath of the EU referendum. But as important is the new TFSME – the “Term Funding scheme with additional incentives for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises”.

This proved rather successful after the EU referendum, and the aim is to get the banks to pass on the rate cut in full to businesses, particularly small and medium-sized firms, which face the greatest pressure to cut staff or hours in a crisis.

Cutting the amount of money that banks are required to squirrel away when the sun is shining so they can spend the cash during this sort of rainy day should provide the firepower for banks to boost lending well above current lending levels.

To be clear, coronavirus is unique and highly unpredictable. There is a fundamental problem of people and businesses not being able to function because of the measures to contain the virus. The message from the Bank is that the banking system is fully padded up to help businesses get through this.

  • 2 in trouble for illegal possession of firearm

Two persons were on Monday arrested by the police at Pokuase junction in the Ga West Municipal Assembly for allegedly possessing a pistol illegally.

Ibrahim Mugtari, 29, and Stephen Waja, 37, were reported to be in the possession of exhibits such as a Smith Wesson pistol with serial number MCP 8623 loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition, three BB cartridges, three mobile phones, GH¢2,982 cash and a used and unused Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards.

The suspects are in the custody of the police assisting in investigations, the Amasaman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Christopher Klomegah, told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said on March 9, at about 11:30am, whilst the police patrol was on duty at Amomoley junction, near Pokuase, they spotted the two suspects in a KIA Picanto taxi cab with registration number GE 5475-17 driven by Mugtari.

The commander said the police team stopped the vehicle and conducted a search on the occupants, and the exhibits were found on them.

He said further search in the car revealed a Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority ( DVLA) roadworthy certificate bearing a KIA Picanto with number GC 2024-19 and an insurance cover of the same vehicle, which the police strongly believe was stolen, and the number plate embossed could be faked.

Chief Superintendent Klomegah said the suspects would be arraigned after investigations into the case concludes.

He called on people who have fallen victim to robbery in the municipality to contact the command.

  • South America asks FIFA to delay World Cup qualifiers because of virus

South America’s football federations asked FIFA on Wednesday to delay their qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because of the global new coronavirus pandemic.

“The South American teams risk not being able to count on players they have picked and who play in Europe because they, arriving from countries with a high level of contagion, could be placed in quarantine,” said a letter from CONMEBOL, South American football’s governing body, to FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

Qualifying matches are due to begin on March 26.

The letter said it expressed the position of its 10 members: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The letter said they “have asked CONMEBOL to place for consideration by FIFA the request to postpone the start of the World Cup qualifiers.”

Many of the South American players selected for their national sides play in Europe, where the deadly new coronavirus is rapidly spreading.

Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni has picked six players based in Italy, where the virus has killed at least 827 people in just over two weeks.

The new coronavirus has already disrupted numerous major sporting events worldwide, including Italy’s Serie A football whose matches are suspended.

  • AshantiGold in deep crisis as club President Kwaku ‘Champion’ Frimpong resigns

Ghanaian Premier League campaigners AshantiGold have been thrown into deep crisis after the club’s President Dr Kwaku ‘Champion’ Frimpong resigned on Thursday over insults poured on him by the club’s supporters.

The majority shareholder of the Miners threw in the towel on Thursday just a day after the club lost 1-0 at home against little fancied Bechem United on Wednesday.

The result left AshGold fifth on the league table, dropping from the third position that the club were after their perfect start to the season that saw them topping the table at a point.

But after the raucous reaction of the supporters following Wednesday’s result the President of Ashantigold Kwaku Frimpong has announced his decision to leave with immediate effect.

“I thank everyone at Ashgold for the opportunity to lead the club. The fans should take their club now,” Kwaku Frimpong told Fox FM on Thursday morning.

“I cannot continue to be president anymore and yesterday what the fans did, I say enough is enough.”

Sixteen suspected criminals have been arrested by the police in two separate swoops at Baatsona in Accra.

Two of them, suspected to be armed robbers, and identified as Albert Bazimbu, 29, and Sulemana Shiabu, 32, were reported to have been involved in a robbery attack on one Nkansa-Dwamena in a house at Spintex road three years ago.

The suspects are in the custody of the police assisting in investigations, the Baatsona Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Julius Kpebbeso, disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in Accra on Tuesday.

He said on March 7, between 7p.m. and 9p.m., the Baastona Divisional Command embarked on the first swoop at Agbeza near Manet and arrested 14 suspects, retrieving from them 20 mobile phones, 16 laptops and two internet routers suspected to be stolen property.

  • Tokyo governor says cancelling Olympics ‘unthinkable’

Doubts are increasingly being raised over whether the Olympics can be held as scheduled from July 24 to August 9.

Cancelling the 2020 Olympics is “unthinkable” although the classification of the coronavirus as a pandemic will likely have some impact on the Games, the Tokyo city governor said on Thursday.

“It can’t be said that the announcement of a pandemic would have no impact… But I think cancellation is unthinkable,” Yuriko Koike told reporters.

Doubts are increasingly being raised over whether the Olympics can be held as scheduled from July 24 to August 9.

Organisers have insisted the Games will go ahead as planned and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with whom the final decision rests, has said there has not yet been any talk of cancellation or postponement.

The IOC has said it will coordinate closely with the World Health Organization, which has now officially classified the outbreak as a pandemic.

Koike vowed to work with the IOC and Tokyo 2020 organisers on what she described as a “global issue”, promising to devote her “utmost efforts” to hold the Games.

But coronavirus has already taken a huge toll on sport across the globe with a long list of competitions affected.

US basketball was the latest sport to be hit, as the NBA said it would suspend the season starting on Thursday after a preliminary test on a Utah Jazz player came back positive for COVID-19.

In Italy, the hardest-hit European country, all sporting events including Serie A football have been suspended until April 3.

Arsenal’s game at Manchester City on Wednesday was the first Premier League football fixture to be called off, while Champions League matches have been played behind closed doors and Indian Wells, one of the biggest events of the tennis season, was cancelled.

    ‘Global problem’

Coronavirus has already had some impact on the Games, as the traditional flame-lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece is expected to be held without spectators after dozens tested positive for the virus nearby.

The torch is due to arrive in Japan on March 20 but the arrival ceremony has also been downscaled, with some 200 children originally scheduled to attend now expected to miss it.

Olympic qualifying tournaments in several different sports have also been cancelled, postponed or moved to different countries.

Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said on Wednesday that the Games would go ahead as scheduled although he admitted organisers are “concerned” about the virus, which has infected 124,000 people with 4,500 deaths.

Mori made the comments after a member of the organisers’ executive board sounded the alarm, warning postponing the Games for two years might be the best option under the circumstances.

But Mori dismissed that option, as did Japanese Olympic minister Seiko Hashimoto, who told a parliament committee that postponing or cancelling the Games was “inconceivable”.

Executive board member Haruyuki Takahashi had told Japan’s Asahi Shimbun daily it would be ideal to hold the Olympics as planned but “there has to be an alternative plan”.

“Coronavirus has become a global problem. We can’t just hold it (the Olympics) because Japan is OK,” he told the daily on Wednesday.

Takahashi said the summer two years from now “offers the best possibility” for a postponement, given the international sporting calendar, adding that “preparation must start now” if a delay is on the cards.

He insisted that it would be “impossible” to cancel the Games altogether, and said he was speaking out as “a warning bell” for the organising committee, adding that he would raise the issue at a board meeting later this month.

  • Police gun down 2 suspected armed robbers at Mankessim

Two suspected armed robbers were on Sunday gunned down during a shootout with the police at Mankessim in the Central Region.

The deceased have been identified as Nathan Kwaku Baidoo, alias Kingkong, and Isaac Addo Mensah, also known as Almera

They were said to be among 13 others who engaged the police in a shootout on January 16, 2015, at New Bortianor junction, resulting in the death of Lance Corporal Akata.

The Deputy Commander of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Afriyie Sakyi, told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said on March 8, personnel from the command, on routine patrols, had information that a group of armed men had snatched two cars and heading towards Kasoa in the Central Region to Cape Coast.

ACP Sakyi said the police team pursued the robbers and on reaching a spot near Eugene Filling Station at Mankessim and realising the police was closing up on them, the suspects abandoned the vehicles amidst sporadic gunshots, which resulted in the two being killed by the gunshots.

The Commander said one other suspect who sustained gunshot wounds escaped to a nearby bush with their weapon, urging healthcare specialists to report to the police any person who report to their facility with gunshot wounds.

He said the two bodies have been sent to the Police Hospital, whilst the two vehicles have since been impounded.

He said on January 16, 2015, Mensah and 12 others were arrested whilst Baidoo escaped. Mensah and his accomplices were arraigned before a court and later released on bail.

ACP Sakyi said Mensah, after he was granted bail, was involved in three separate robberies in the Accra metropolis, adding that the cases were pending before court.

The Commander said Baidoo was arrested in 2017 and put before a district court for murder and was also released on bail in February 2020.

  • ‘Don’t panic’ says US woman who recovered from coronavirus

An American woman who has recovered from the novel coronavirus has a simple message for people who are worried: Don’t panic but do think about high-risk individuals and stay home if you feel ill.

Elizabeth Schneider lives in Seattle, the biggest city of Washington state, which has the most deaths in the United States from the disease sweeping the globe.

The 37-year-old, who has a PhD in bioengineering, said she was sharing her story “to give people a little bit of hope” through her own relatively mild experience with the infection, which she treated herself from home.

But, she added, “obviously, it’s not something to be completely nonchalant about, because there are a lot of people who are elderly or have underlying health conditions.

“That means that we need to be extra vigilant about staying home, isolating ourselves from others.”

This week, US health authorities citing Chinese data said 80 percent of cases have been mild, while the remaining serious cases that required hospitalization affected mainly people over 60 and those with conditions like diabetes, heart disease or lung disease.

    The party

Schneider first began experiencing flu-like symptoms on February 25, three days after going to a party that was later identified as the place where at least five other people also got infected.

“I woke up and I was feeling tired, but it was nothing more than what you normally feel when you have to get up and go to work, and I had been very busy the previous weekend,” she told AFP in an interview Wednesday.

By midday, however, she felt a headache coming on, along with a fever and body aches. She decided to leave the office of the biotechnology company where she works as a marketing manager and went home.

After waking up from a nap, Schneider found she had a high temperature, which peaked at 103 degrees Fahrenheit that night (39.4 Celsius).

“And at that point, I started to shiver uncontrollably, and I was getting the chills and getting tingling in my extremities, so that was a little concerning,” she said.

She turned to over-the-counter flu medications to treat the symptoms and called a friend to be on standby in case she needed to be taken to an emergency room — but the fever began to recede in the coming days.

Schneider had been following news reports about the novel coronavirus. The first US case was detected in Washington in late January.

The state has since gone on to become the epicenter of the disease in the country, with more than 260 cases and at least two dozen deaths. Nationwide, there have been more than 1,100 cases and 30 deaths.

Because she didn’t have the most common symptoms like a cough or shortness of breath, “I thought, okay, well that’s definitely why I don’t have coronavirus,” said Schneider.

She had gotten a flu shot but assumed her illness was a different strain. A visit to the doctor would only result in her being asked to go home, rest and drink plenty of fluids.

    ‘Pleasantly surprised’

A few days later, however, she discovered through a friend’s Facebook post that several people from the party had all developed similar symptoms, and she began to get more suspicious.

Several of these people went to their doctors, where they were found to be negative for the flu, but they were not offered coronavirus tests because they too were not coughing or having breathing trouble.

Knowing that she would also likely be turned down for the test, she decided to enroll in a research program called the Seattle Flu Study, hoping it might provide an answer. The team behind the study sent her a nasal swab kit, which she mailed back and waited several more days.

“I finally got a phone call from one of the research coordinators on Saturday (March 7), telling me that ‘You have tested positive for COVID-19,’” she said.

“I was a little bit pleasantly surprised, because I thought it was a little bit cool,” Schneider admitted, laughing, though her mother cried when she told her.

“Granted, I probably would not have felt that way if I was severely ill,” she said. “But from a scientific curiosity perspective, I thought it was very interesting. And also the fact that I finally got confirmation that that’s what I had.”

By this time, her symptoms had already subsided, and she was told by local health authorities to remain at home for at least seven days after the onset of symptoms or 72 hours after they subsided.

It’s now been a week since she’s felt better. She has started going out for errands but is still avoiding large gatherings and continuing to work from home.

Schneider said she hoped her example, which will probably be typical of the high majority of cases, could comfort others.

“The message is don’t panic,” said Schneider. “If you think that you have it, you probably do; you should probably get tested.”

“If your symptoms aren’t life-threatening, simply stay at home, medicate with over-the-counter medicines, drink lots of water, get a lot of rest and check out the shows you want to binge-watch,” she said.

  • Partey’s midfield consistency sees Atletico Madrid edge past Liverpool

Thomas Partey was brilliant in an action-packed 120 minutes as Atletico Madrid claimed a 3-2 extra-time victory over Liverpool in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16, winning 4-2 on aggregate.

Los Rojiblancos were 1-0 victors from the first leg in Madrid and had the difficult task of completing the job at Anfield.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s 43rd-minute goal meant the game went to extra time, and although Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool the lead on aggregate in extra-time, Marcos Llorente’s brace and Alvaro Morata’s strike ensured the Reds Champions League title defence was brought to an early end.

Partey has been Atleti’s stand out performer in midfield this season and he didn’t disappoint again making 69 touches, 30 accurate passes (68.2%) and winning two of three dribbles.

It was on the defensive front Partey really stood out, winning 11 of 16 total duels and making four clearances, four interceptions and five tackles.

With a quarter-final birth sealed, the 26-year old Ghanaian, who has been linked with a transfer to some of Europe’s big guns, will turn his attention to La Liga this weekend in an away trip to Athletic Bilbao.

  • CAF considering playing 2021 AFCON qualifiers behind closed doors

The Confederation of African football says it is ‘closely monitoring’ the evolution of the deadly coronavirus around the world, particular on the African continent and is considering a number of measures to ensure the safety of footballers and fans.

In a press release copied to www.ghanaweb.com, the continental football body says it will consider playing games, including the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers behind closed doors if it becomes necessary.

CAF however says it is not considering rescheduling upcoming games largely because “according to World Health Organization (WHO), no African country till date has been declared a high risk”.

“Consequently, CAF has decided to maintain the schedule of all competitions. Also, CAF has been informed of the restrictive measures taken by the authorities of some Member Associations and is in contact to find solutions on a case-by-case basis, with the option of the organization of matches behind closed doors.

“Regarding the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) Cameroon 2020, a delegation from the CAF Medical Committee is scheduled to visit Cameroon from 14-15 March 2020. The purpose of this mission is to assess all the preventive measures taken by the Local Organizing Committee”.

The CHAN competition is scheduled for 4-25 April 2020 while the thrid round of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers are set to be played by the end of March.

Addressing the media after the game Annor Walker said, his outfit couldn’t come to the party.

Joseph Esso who has endured a goal drought in the last five games opened the scoring at the Accra Sports Stadium after an effort from Kofi Kordzi had been parried away by the goalkeeper.

The Phobians after the break added three more goals to put the game beyond reach. Midfielder Benjamiin Afutu chipped in with two before Daniel Afriyie made it 4-0 for the home side.

Aidoo has been in top form as Celta Vigo go on a run of four games without defeat, including picking a point against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeau.

The 24-year old has made 23 appearances for the La Liga side this season, after making a big money move from Belgium champions KRC Genk in the summer.

In a video sighted, the songstress revealed that the bottle thrown at her was not because of bad performance instead, she knows it is as a result of brand association.

Feli Nuna further reiterated that she was performing a song that featured Stonebwoy and the audience at the event also had fans of Shatta Wale amidst them.

Hence, the bottle thrown at her occurred because she did mention Stonebwoy which did not go well for the Shatta fans at the venue and that led to the bottle thrown at her.

  • Death toll in Italy from coronavirus jumps to 827

The death toll in Italy from the coronavirus surged to 827 on Wednesday, as 196 more fatalities were confirmed over the past 24 hours, according to an official.

Civil protection chief Angelo Borelli said the number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 10,590, while the total number of affected — including deaths and recoveries — reached 12,462.

Borrelli said that 196 more deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours.

To contain the virus, the Italian government has implemented a nationwide lockdown with schools and universities closed, and all events and gatherings cancelled.

The novel coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China, last December and has now spread to 114 countries.

The global death toll is now almost 4,300, with around 118,000 confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which has declared the outbreak “a global pandemic.”

  • US, UK troops among 3 dead in rocket attack in Iraq – US official

Multiple rockets hit an Iraqi base housing United States and coalition troops on Wednesday, and an assessment of the incident is under way, said a senior official from the administration of US President Donald Trump.

“We are closely following the situation at Camp Taji,” the official said. “We are not going to get ahead of the assessment and investigation, which are ongoing.”

Earlier US media, citing official sources, said that one US soldier and one British soldier were among the three dead. They also said an US contractor was also killed. Those reports have not been confirmed.

The rocket attack was the 22nd against US military interests in the country since late October, an Iraqi military commander said.

US Army Colonel Myles Caggins, a US military spokesman in Iraq, said on Twitter more than 15 small rockets hit the base but provided no further details.

One American official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said more information would be given later in an official announcement.

Camp Taji, located just north of Baghdad, has been used as a training base for a number of years. There are as many as 6,000 US troops in Iraq, training and advising Iraqi forces and conducting counterterrorism missions.

Previous rocket attacks targeting US soldiers, diplomats and facilities in Iraq killed one US contractor and an Iraqi soldier. None of the attacks has been claimed, but Washington accuses pro-Iran factions of being responsible.

Two days after the death of an American in rockets fired on an Iraqi military base in Kirkuk at the end of last year, the US army hit five bases in Iraq and Syria used by the pro-Iran armed faction Kataib Hezbollah.

Kataib Hezbollah was designated a “foreign terrorist organization” by the US Department of State in 2009.

Tensions then rose further between foes Washington and Tehran after a US drone strike killed the powerful Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani and an Iraqi paramilitary commander in Baghdad on January 3.

The assassination brought the two countries to the brink of war.

The US leads an international coalition – comprised of dozens of countries and thousands of soldiers – formed in Iraq in 2014 to confront the armed group ISIL (ISIS).

While ISIL has lost the vast territory it once held in Iraq and Syria, sleeper cells remain capable of carrying out attacks.

The Iraqi parliament voted to expel all foreign soldiers from the country in the wake of the killing of Soleimani, a decision that has still not been acted on by the government.

The outgoing government, which resigned in December in the face of mass protests, has yet to be replaced because of a lack of agreement in parliament – one of the most divided in Iraq’s recent history.

The first half eventually ended in a stalemate.

Muntari and Kwabena Yeboah, the President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) posed for a photo at the stadium while watching the clash.

  • Key Algerian opposition figure sentenced for ‘undermining national unity’

A court in Algiers Wednesday sentenced Karim Tabbou, a key figure in Algeria’s anti-government protest movement, to six months in prison for “undermining national unity”, one of his lawyers said.

Tabbou, who heads the small, unregistered opposition party UDS, has been detained since September.

The prosecutor last week had requested four years in prison for the 46-year-old, who has denied all charges against him.

Salah Abderahmane, one of Tabbou’s lawyers, said an Algiers court Wednesday sentenced him for “undermining national unity”.

He was also handed a six-month suspended sentence.

Said Salhi, deputy head of the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH), said Tabbou would be released on March 26 due to time already served.

He said the conviction was part of a “hardening of justice” and described the verdict as “heavy”.

From 2007 to 2011, Tabbou was the secretary of Algerian opposition party the Socialist Forces Front (FFS).

He became a popular figure in the protest movement and his portrait is often brandished at demonstrations.

    Different case, similar charge

Also on Wednesday, a court in Mascara, northwest Algeria, tried protest figure Hadj Ghermoul on appeal.

The prosecutor has requested Ghermoul’s 18-month prison sentence be increased for spreading videos “harming the national interest”, the CNLD prisoners’ rights group wrote on its Facebook page.

A verdict is expected on March 25.

Rights groups say several dozen people connected with the protest movement remain in detention, though the exact number is difficult to establish due to rearrests.

Mass protests erupted in Algeria in February last year after then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced a bid for a fifth term after 20 years in power, despite being debilitated by a 2013 stroke.

Less than six weeks later, Bouteflika stepped down after losing the support of the then-army chief in the face of massive weekly demonstrations.

Weekly protests have continued despite Bouteflika’s exit and the election of a new president in December.

  • Di Asa’s PM exposes notorious men who target plus-size women

The winner of Di Asa 2019, Precious Mensah a.k.a PM has revealed that some unscrupulous men have been targeting plus-size women in Ghana with the intention of using and dumping them.

In an interview on YEN TV, PM stated that there have been certain instances where her plus-size friends realized that they’ve been dating one particular guy for a long time.

According to her, they have noticed that most of the notorious men happen to be Ghanaian men who live abroad.

“There is this guy who lives abroad. He has proposed to a lot of plus-size girls in Ghana but what they don’t know it that we the plus-size people, we are networked. Usually when we meet we talk,” PM disclosed.

“One person can say I am dating this person and when they show you the picture, you will realize that it is the same person proposing to 3 or 4 people in our network. So I do not entertain social media dates or chats,” she said.

She advised these notorious men to learn to stick to one woman and avoid trying to date plus-size women with the intention of using and dumping the else she together with her network will expose them.

“There are other womanizers abroad who will propose to about 3 plus size ladies and when they come to Ghana, they meet this person and this hotel and move to another to meet the next and then the next.”

“Before you know it, he would have slept with all four of you. If care is not taken, once these ladies find out they are all dating and sleeping with one person, sometimes they turn to fight.”

“But we are networked even online we are about to identify and expose such men. They should learn to stick to one plus-size woman and stop dating 3 friends at the same time,” she noted

According to her, many people kept talking about her huge body size, and in a bid to listen and please them, she started taking pills to shed weight.

However, the pills had untold negative effects on her – affecting her heart, lungs, and other vital organs of her body.

  • US air strike in Somalia killed civilians – MP

A US air strike in southern Somalia killed civilians, not al-Shabab fighters as claimed by Washington, family members and a politician told Al Jazeera.

Washington carried out the air strike near the farming town of Janaale, 95km south of Mogadishu, on Monday claiming the attack killed “five terrorists”.

The victims were civilians travelling in a minibus heading to the capital Mogadishu, Abdullahi Abdirahman Ali, who lost his father in the air strike, said.

“The Americans are lying. They killed my elderly father. He is 70 years old and can barely move. He can’t walk without the help of a walking stick. He is not al-Shabab,” Abdullahi told Al Jazeera.

“They killed these civilians because they know no one will take action against them,” he added, anger palpable in his voice.

One of the other victims was a 13-year-old boy, relatives said. Photos posted online show some of the bodies burned beyond recognition and the wreckage of a blood-soaked vehicle.

“The minibus was going to Mogadishu. If the Americans suspected anything, they could have waited for them there. For them it is easier to kill civilians than to question them,” Abdullahi added.

The Somali government controls Mogadishu after pushing the al-Qaeda-linked group out of the capital in 2011. The US military has a base in the seaside city.

Mahad Dhoore, a Member of Parliament, also confirmed the victims of the air strike were civilians.

“They killed civilians. They are not telling the truth when they say they killed terrorists. These people are my constituents,” Mahad told Al Jazeera.

“Civilians are paying a heavy price. On one hand they are been punished by al-Shabab. On the other American drone strikes are killing them.”

Washington has carried out at least 25 air strikes in Somalia this year, according to figures released by the US military.

Last year, the United States conducted more than 60 air raids in the Horn of Africa country.

“Our air strikes are a key effort to combating terror and helping to bring stability and security to Somalia,” Chris Karns, US Africa Command director of public affairs, said in a statement following the latest attack.

“Not only do they degrade al-Shabab’s ability to conduct violent activities in the region, but they place relentless pressure on their fighter network and impede their ability to export terrorism,” he added.
