  • Ghana National student accused of rape remanded

The Ghana National College student who allegedly raped a first-year female student has been remanded after appearing before court today.

The suspect Fredrick Ayisi was sent to the Cape Coast District Court 2 and was remanded into Police custody to reappear on 13-03-20 by Her Worship Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

Reports say the suspect lured the girl to a location outside the school and forcibly had sex with her.

Authorities of the school reported the matter to the police when it got their attention leading to his arrest.

By law, a district court has no jurisdiction to try rape cases so the case will be sent to the High court.

  • Our supporters, management deserve better – Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu

Head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Maxwell Konadu has admitted that management and supporters deserve better than the results the team has churned in the last couple of days.

The Continental club masters suffered two defeats successively in both the Ghana Premier League and the MTN FA Cup.

Though not much was heard following a 1-0 loss to Aduana Stars, the team’s 2-1 defeat against Asokwa Deportivo has attracted backlash from supporters with club Executive Chairman Dr. Kwame Kyei being forced to hold an executive meeting with the players last Monday.

In an interview on the back of the meeting which ended with players being taken to the cleaners, coach for Asante Kotoko Maxwell Konadu has admitted the Porcupine Warriors have not shown the right desire in the last couple of matches.

“What is going on we think as technical men our management and supporters deserve better than we are doing at the moment and we have made it clear to everybody [the technical team members, the playing body] that it looks as if the desire is still not enough”, the experienced trainer said.

He added, “We believe that we can give more and we believe that Kotoko deserves better than what it is enjoying now”.

Kotoko will look to appease supporters and the entire club when they take on Bechem United tomorrow at the Accra Sports Stadium.

  • Take a serious look at Coronavirus threat to Ghana Omane Boamah to Akufo-Addo

Former Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has urged the president to make enough funds available for the country to prepare for an outbreak of Coronavirus which has already killed thousands of people around the world.

In a tweet, the Medical Practitioner said Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo must take a critical look at the threat the disease poses to the nation if it eventually makes its way here and take all the necessary steps to ensure the country is properly prepared to fight it.

His post is in reaction to a report by the World Health Organisation that Ghana is not properly prepared to fight the disease.

“Ghana assessed its capacities to respond to any suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 and identified gaps to plan for preparedness, response and control activities,” the report states.

The report further stated that the GH¢2.5million government has committed to supporting preparation is not enough.

15 suspected cases of the disease have been recorded in the country but all tested negative.

Dr Omane Boamah adding his voice to the report said, “@NAkufoAddo should take a serious look at the threat of Coronavirus disease. He must show leadership, commit reasonable funds, provide PPEs, assure frontline health workers and begin to deepen international cooperation.”

  • Iyanya gets N20M bail over car theft allegation

Iyanya has been granted N20 million bail over the car theft allegation levelled against him.
According to blogger, Linda Ikeji, Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile of the Igbosere High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday, February 27, 2020, ordered Iyanya to produce a surety in like sum, who should also have landed property in Lagos with a Certificate of Occupancy.

She also warned the music star that if his bail conditions are not perfected in seven days, it will be revoked.

“I have perused the affidavit and the counter-affidavit of the parties; there is a prima facie case of criminal conversion against him,” Justice Okikiolu-Ighile said.

” However, there is nothing to show that the defendant will interfere with the proceedings of this case and nothing to show that he will jump bail if granted bail. Bail is therefore granted to the defendant in the sum of N20 million with one surety in the like sum.”

The case has been adjourned till May 27 and 28 for trial. It would be recalled that Iyanya was arraigned in court a few weeks ago for alleged car theft.

    The arraignment

The report says that the police filed the one-count charge marked LD/9024c/2019, against the singer on March 15, 2019.

Iyanya failed to appear in court for arraignment, despite allegedly being served with the charge and hearing notice, following which the arraignment was adjourned six times.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile threatened to invoke the power of the court after the music star refused to show up in court.

On Tuesday, February 4, Iyanya showed up in court where the charge was read before him.

The court heard that the defendant allegedly dishonestly converted to his use or of another person, a Black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked MAVINIY, with Chassis and Engine numbers JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and 2TR1385954.

The SUV in question is said to belong to The Temple Management Company Ltd. After the charges were read, Iyanya pleaded not guilty. The prosecuting counsel, however, prayed that the court remand the singer in prison custody

  • Health experts deliberate on implementation of malaria initiative

Health experts from Anglophone and Francophone countries are deliberating on how each country has implemented a malaria initiative dubbed: Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC), at a three-day meeting in Accra.

The SMC is the intermittent administration of full treatment courses of an antimalarial medicine to children in areas of highly seasonal transmission during the malaria season.

The three-day meeting is to help identify what has worked in other countries, so that they could be replicated by others.

The objective of the SMC is to prevent malarial illness by maintaining therapeutic antimalarial drug concentrations in the blood throughout the period of greatest malarial risk.

    Malaria disease

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Aboagye, said malaria is an endemic disease in Africa and, therefore, called on the stakeholders to consider the use of other interventions, such as long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets, together with the SMC, to ensure that malaria was eradicated from the continent.

He said when malaria struck, it affected all sectors of the economy, and that it had imposed a grave economic and social burden on developing countries over the years.

He said in Ghana, malaria was highly seasonal and one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among children.

Dr Aboagye, however, said the SMC had proved to be effective in the treatment of malaria among children and, therefore, needed to be scaled up across the country.

    SMC recommendation

The WHO recommends SMC with sulfoxides-pyrimethamine + amodiaquine in areas with highly seasonal malaria transmission in the Sahel sub-region of sub-Saharan Africa, where the P. falciparum was sensitive to both antimalarial medicines.

It is estimated that across the Sahel sub-region, most childhood malarial diseases and deaths occur during the rainy season, which lasts generally between three to four months.

According to health experts, giving effective antimalarial treatment at monthly intervals during this period had shown to be 75 per cent protective against uncomplicated and severe malaria in children under five years of age.

In Ghana, malaria continues to be the leading cause of outpatient attendance, even though significant gains have been achieved as a result of the recent scale-up of preventive and curative interventions.

    NMCP

The Programme Manager of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP), Dr Keziah Malm, said the programme piloted the implementation of the SMC intervention in the Upper West Region in 2014, where most childhood mortality and morbidity from malaria occurred during the rainy season.

She said the SMC, which was implemented through a Roll Back Malaria (RBM) initiative, was scaled-up across the northern regions following the success of the programme.

She said the SMC would be implemented in the Oti Region soon, since the area was endemic with malaria among children.

The SMC Sub-regional Coordinator, West and Central Africa, Ms Murindahabi Yonipue, said the meeting would afford participants the opportunity to learn best practices from one another.

  • Malawi legalises growing of cannabis

Malawi has become the latest southern African country to legalise the growing, selling and exporting of cannabis.

Recreational smokers consider, “Malawi Gold”, as they call it, to be one of the finest forms of the drug.

But the authorities have stopped short of legalising it for personal use.

It will be used to make medicines and hemp fibres, which are used to make clothes, biofuel, paper and other products.

Cannabis sales could supplement the tobacco trade, upon which Malawi is highly dependent.

Other southern African countries, including Zambia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, have relaxed rules on growing the plant.

But South Africa is the only one to decriminalise it for personal use.

  • Canada to stop paying Harry and Meghan’s security

Canada will soon stop providing security for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the federal government has confirmed.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been providing assistance to the couple since their arrival in Canada “intermittently since November 2019”.

It had not been clear whether Canadians would be paying for their security following their move.

The couple will formally step down as senior royals from 31 March.

They will no longer carry out duties on behalf of the Queen but arrangements will be reviewed after 12 months.

‘We are all just to call him Harry’

They have indicated that they will split their time between the UK and North America.

    What are Canadians saying?

RCMP has been providing security to the couple at the request of the Metropolitan Police.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex choosing to re-locate to Canada on a part-time basis presented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances,” said Canada’s federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair in a statement on Thursday.

“The RCMP has been engaged with officials in the UK from the very beginning regarding security considerations. As the duke and duchess are currently recognised as Internationally Protected Persons, Canada has an obligation to provide security assistance on an as needed basis.”

Justin Trudeau: “We’re not entirely sure what the final decisions will be”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had faced repeated questions over who would be paying to provide security for the prince and his wife Meghan.

“The assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status,” according to the statement from public safety.

Neither the Metropolitan Police nor a spokeswoman for the couple would comment on security matters.

The Canadian government’s confirmation was first reported by CBC News.

    What are the couple’s plans?

Earlier this year Harry and Meghan announced they would be stepping back from royal duties and working to become financially independent.

Details of how this would work were then unveiled, following days of talks with the Queen and other senior royals.

The couple had previously spoken about how they had struggled under the media spotlight.

The couple have been in Canada with their son Archie for much of this year, after briefly returning to the UK in January following an extended six-week Christmas break on Vancouver Island.

When news broke that the couple would be spending part of their time in Canada, one of the main preoccupations was about who would foot the bill, especially if they are spending the bulk of their time as private citizens.

A public opinion poll released in January by the non-profit Angus Reid Institute indicated that 73% of Canadians had no interest in paying any of the costs for security and other expenditures associated with their relocation.

  • The boss who put everyone on $70K

In 2015, the boss of a card payments company in Seattle introduced a $70,000 minimum salary for all of his 120 staff – and personally took a pay cut of $1m. Five years later he’s still on the minimum salary, and says the gamble has paid off.

Dan Price was hiking with his friend Valerie in the Cascade mountains that loom majestically over Seattle, when he had an uncomfortable revelation.

As they walked, she told him that her life was in chaos, that her landlord had put her monthly rent up by $200 and she was struggling to pay her bills.

It made Price angry. Valerie, who he had once dated, had served for 11 years in the military, doing two tours in Iraq, and was now working 50 hours a week in two jobs to make ends meet.

“She is somebody for whom service, honour and hard work just defines who she is as a person,” he says.

Even though she was earning around $40,000 a year, in Seattle that wasn’t enough to afford a decent home. He was angry that the world had become such an unequal place. And suddenly it struck him that he was part of the problem.

At 31, Price was a millionaire. His company, Gravity Payments, which he set up in his teens, had about 2,000 customers and an estimated worth of millions of dollars. Though he was earning $1.1m a year, Valerie brought home to him that a lot of his staff must be struggling – and he decided to change that.

Raised in deeply Christian, rural Idaho, Dan Price is upbeat and positive, generous in his praise of others and impeccably polite, but he has become a crusader against inequality in the US.

“People are starving or being laid off or being taken advantage of, so that somebody can have a penthouse at the top of a tower in New York with gold chairs.

“We’re glorifying greed all the time as a society, in our culture. And, you know, the Forbes list is the worst example – ‘Bill Gates has passed Jeff Bezos as the richest man.’ Who cares!?”

    Dan Price

Before 1995 the poorest half of the population of the United States earned a greater share of national wealth than the richest 1%, he points out. But that year the tables turned – the top 1% earned more than the bottom 50%. And the gap is continuing to rise.

In 1965, CEOs in the US earned 20 times more than the average worker but by 2015 it had risen to 300 times (in the UK, the bosses of FTSE 100 companies now earn 117 times the salary of their average worker).

Breathing in the crisp mountain air as he hiked with Valerie, Price had an idea. He had read a study by the Nobel prize-winning economists Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, looking at how much money an American needs to be happy. He immediately promised Valerie he would significantly raise the minimum salary at Gravity.

After crunching the numbers, he arrived at the figure of $70,000. He realised that he would not only have to slash his salary, but also mortgage his two houses and give up his stocks and savings. He gathered his staff together and gave them the news.

He’d expected scenes of celebration, but at first the announcement floated down upon the room in something of an anti-climax, Price says. He had to repeat himself before the enormity of what was happening landed.

Five years later, Dan laughs about the fact that he missed a key point in the Princeton professors’ research. The amount they estimated people need to be happy was $75,000.

Still, a third of those working at the company would have their salaries doubled immediately.

    Since then, Gravity has transformed.

The headcount has doubled and the value of payments that the company processes has gone from $3.8bn a year to $10.2bn.

But there are other metrics that Price is more proud of.

“Before the $70,000 minimum wage, we were having between zero and two babies born per year amongst the team,” he says.

“And since the announcement – and it’s been only about four-and-a-half years – we’ve had more than 40 babies.”

    Dan Price with his mother
    Dan Price with his mother

More than 10% of the company have been able to buy their own home, in one of the US’s most expensive cities for renters. Before the figure was less than 1%.

“There was a little bit of concern amongst pontificators out there that people would squander any gains that they would have. And we’ve really seen the opposite,” Price says.

The amount of money that employees are voluntarily putting into their own pension funds has more than doubled and 70% of employees say they’ve paid off debt.

But Price did get a lot of flak. Along with hundreds of letters of support, and magazine covers labelling him “America’s best boss”, many of Gravity’s own customers wrote handwritten letters objecting to what they saw as a political statement.

At the time, Seattle was debating an increase to the minimum wage to $15, making it the highest in the US at the time. Small business owners were fighting it, claiming they would go out of business.

The right-wing radio pundit, Rush Limbaugh, whom Price had listened to every day in his childhood, called him a communist.

“I hope this company is a case study in MBA programmes on how socialism does not work, because it’s going to fail,” he said.

Two senior Gravity employees also resigned in protest. They weren’t happy that the salaries of junior staff had jumped overnight, and argued that it would make them lazy, and the company uncompetitive.

    This hasn’t happened.

    Rosita Barlow
    Rosita Barlow

Rosita Barlow, director of sales at Gravity, says that since salaries were raised junior colleagues have been pulling more weight.

“When money is not at the forefront of your mind when you’re doing your job, it allows you to be more passionate about what motivates you,” she says.

Senior staff have found their workload reduced. They’re under less pressure and can do things like take all of the holiday leave they’re entitled to.

Price tells the story about one staff member who works in Gravity’s call centre.

“He was commuting over an hour and a half a day,” he says. “He was worried that during his commute he was going to blow out a tyre and not have enough money to fix that tyre. He was stressing about it every day.”

When his salary was raised to $70,000 this man moved closer to the office, now he spends more money on his health, he exercises every day and eats more healthily.

“We had another gentleman on a similar team and he literally lost more than 50lb (22kg),” he says. Others report spending more time with their families or helping their parents pay off debt.

“We saw, every day, the effects of giving somebody freedom,” Price says.

He thinks it is why Gravity is making more money than ever.

Raising salaries didn’t change people’s motivation – he says staff were already motivated to work hard – but it increased what he calls their capability.

“You’re not thinking I have to go to work because I have to make money,” Rosita Barlow agrees. “Now it’s become focused on ‘How do I good work?’”

Barlow has been with Gravity since the early days and knows that Price wasn’t always so generous.

He acknowledges himself that there was a time in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis when he was obsessed with saving money.

The downturn in the US economy decimated Gravity’s customer base and it’s income fell by 20%. Business logic would have dictated letting go about 12 of the company’s 35 staff, but instead Price focused on cutting costs.

After five tense months, the company started turning a profit again, but Price was profoundly spooked, and kept salaries low.

At this time Rosita Barlow was experiencing her own financial problems, and secretly working at McDonalds outside work hours. When McDonalds offered her a promotion, she accidentally left a training manual on her desk at Gravity, and someone spotted it.

Her bosses called her in for a meeting.

“They sat me down and my immediate reaction was to cry,” Barlow says. She thought she was being fired.

Instead they told her to figure out how much money she’d need to stay on at the company and they raised her salary to $40,000.

“I was very impressed and proud of her and mad at myself,” Price says.

It took him a few more years to grasp the scale of the problem among his staff.

“Most were too intimidated to come to me and tell me how a lack of pay was hurting them,” he says.

Before 2015, he had already begun giving employees 20% annual pay rises. But it was his conversation with Valerie that convinced him to go further.

Price had hoped that Gravity’s example would lead to far-reaching changes in US business. He’s deeply disappointed and sad that this hasn’t happened.

Some did follow suit, PharmaLogics in Boston raised their minimum salary to $50,000, and Rented.com in Atlanta raised theirs too. He believes that, by means of online lobbying, he also influenced Amazon’s decisions to raise their minimum wage.

But he had hoped for widespread, structural change.

“Boy, was I wrong,” he says. “I’ve really failed in that regard. And it’s changed my perspective on things because I really believed that through the actions that I did and that other people could do, that we could turn the tide on runaway income inequality.”

The change has had a profound effect on Price and his lifestyle.

Before taking a pay cut, Price was the cliché of a young white tech millionaire. He lived in a beautiful house overlooking Seattle’s Puget Sound, he drank champagne in expensive restaurants.

Afterwards, he rented his house out on Airbnb to help stay afloat.

A group of employees became sick of watching him turn up at work in a 12-year-old Audi and secretly clubbed together to buy him a Tesla.

Dan Price with Alyssa O'Neal, accepting his Tesla
Dan Price with Alyssa O’Neal, accepting his Tesla

A film the company posted on YouTube follows one of the group, Alyssa O’Neal, as she schemes with her colleagues to surprise him with the car.

“I feel like this is the ultimate way to say thank you for all the sacrifices he’s made and any of the negative stuff he’s had to deal with,” she says.

Price then walks out of the office into the car park, sees the car, and starts crying.

Five years later, Price is still on Gravity’s minimum salary. He says he’s more fulfilled than he ever was when he was earning millions though it’s not all easy.

“There’s tests every day,” he says.

“I’m the same age as Mark Zuckerberg and I have dark moments where I think, ‘I want to be just as rich as Mark Zuckerberg and I want to compete with him to be on the Forbes list. And I want to be on the cover of Time magazine, making lots of money.’ All these greedy things are tempting.”

“It’s not like it’s easy to just turn down. But my life is so much better.”

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the repatriation of some 132 South Africans living in China’s Wuhan city, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak.

The decision was announced on Thursday following a cabinet meeting and after requests from families of South Africans living in the city, the president’s office said.

No timeframe for the repatriation was given but the government said the 132 citizens – out of a total of 199 South Africans living there – have put in requests to be returned home.

None of them has been diagnosed with the virus or exhibited any symptom of the disease, but they will be quarantined for 21 days upon arrival in South Africa as a “precautionary measure”, the president’s office announced in a statement.

“Government has been in constant communication with the families of all affected individuals and relevant departments have made the necessary arrangements to receive them,” it added.

Health and military personnel will be deployed to provide assistance during the repatriation and quarantine processes.

The country’s national carrier, South African Airlines, had already cancelled direct flights to China.

Nigeria on Thursday became the first sub-Saharan country to report a confirmed case of coronavirus. The patient is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and flew into the commercial capital Lagos from Milan on 25 February.

  • The crisis forcing mothers to give away their babies

Dumping babies is forbidden,” the sign created by Eric Mejicano reads. The Venezuelan artist posted the signs on walls across Venezuela after a newborn was found in the rubbish near his apartment block in the capital, Caracas.

Mejicano says that he launched the campaign to alert people to the fact that in Venezuela “something is becoming common which should never be considered normal”.

The country’s economy is in freefall and one in three Venezuelans is struggling to put enough food on the table to meet minimum nutrition requirements, according to a study by the UN World Food Programme.

With contraceptives hard to come by and beyond the financial means of many, unwanted pregnancies are common. Strict abortion laws which only allow for terminations in cases when the mother’s life is in danger further limit women’s choices.

Amid the economic crisis, one charity said in 2018 that it had seen the number of babies abandoned in the streets or left at the entrances of public buildings increase by 70%.

The Venezuelan government has not released any official figures in recent years and neither the communications ministry nor the government body dealing with the rights of children answered requests for comment.

But social services and health workers consulted by the BBC confirmed there had been an increase in the number of abandoned babies as well as a spike in those handed over for informal adoption.

    ‘Shortcuts’

Nelson Villasmill is a member of a child protection council in one of Caracas’ poorest areas. He explains that, faced with a poorly funded adoption system that is in total disarray, desperate parents sometimes resort to shortcuts.

Children eat lunch at Madre Asuncion's community kitchen on October 9, 2019 in Petare, Caracas, Venezuela.
Community kitchens have been set up to help feed those in need but even so malnutrition is a major problem

The story of Baby Tomás (not his real name) is one such case. He was born to a mother living in poverty in Caracas who felt she was in no position to raise him.

The gynaecologist who was present at Tomás’ birth agreed to help.

He says it was not the first time he came across a mother who felt she could not bring up her baby. “They almost always change their minds the first time they breastfeed the baby,” he explains. “But sometimes that is not the case, and then you have to find a solution.”

He contacted one of his patients. In her forties and dreaming of having a baby, Tania (not her real name) had not been able to get pregnant.

She wanted to help Tomás and his mother, but after some thought decided against taking him in. Instead, she contacted a couple with whom she is friends who agreed to raise Tomás as their own child in their home in rural Venezuela.

They had to get the baby registered quickly in order not to arouse suspicion, so Tania paid a $250 (£195) bribe for an official to turn a blind eye and put down her friend’s name as Tomás’ birth mother.

Tomás is now being raised by her friends in the countryside and his new family has just celebrated Tomás taking his first steps.

Tania says she does not regret what she did and insists that she bypassed the official adoption channels for Tomás’ benefit. “I never thought of doing anything like this but legal adoption doesn’t work in Venezuela and that baby would have suffered a lot of hardships in a public orphanage,” she explains.

    Trapped

Tomás was given away with his mother’s consent but there is no shortage of people exploiting the desperation of Venezuelan women.

While she was pregnant with her second child, Isabel’s husband died, making Isabel (not her real name) consider giving up the child she was expecting. “I was alone and feared that I wouldn’t be able to feed my baby,” she says.

Following the advice of an acquaintance, she flew to the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean to meet a couple she was told were interested in adopting her baby.

She was told she would have the final say in any decision but soon came under pressure from the Colombian woman making the arrangements.

“I was told it was going to be all legal and never committed to give my baby away,” she recalls. But once in Trinidad, “I realised I had been trapped in a net of human traffickers”.

“I was always being watched,” she recalls. Isabel says that she was not allowed to leave the house where she was staying and that the return ticket for the flight she had been promised would take her back to Venezuela never materialised.

    Separated

Weeks later she gave birth prematurely in a Trinidadian hospital. She decided to keep the baby but immediately was pressured by the Colombian woman and a man who claimed to be a lawyer.

“They told me that the new parents were waiting in the parking lot and that I had to sign some documents in English that I didn’t understand and to hand over my baby.”

Isabel refused at first but over the following weeks, her captors increased the pressure, taking away her food, medicine and nappies.

“In the end, I had to hand over my son to save his life and for me to return to Venezuela to get help,” she says crying.

With the help of a non-governmental organisation, Isabel has now set off on a legal battle to recover her son who is under the guardianship of the authorities in Trinidad. At present, she is only allowed to see him once a week.

She says she will not give up until she is reunited with him.

  • Major rainy season to start in March Meteo Agency

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has said the 2020 major rainy season will start from March and will last till June 2020.

It said the prediction is based on observations of conditions on land and ocean as well as outputs from major world forecast centers like the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), Climate Prediction Centre (NCEP-CPC), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), UK Met Office and Meteo France.

In its seasonal rainfall forecast, the agency said “above normal” rainfall should be expected for the period of March, April and May within the forest zones while normal rainfall can be expected for the rest of the country.

Within the season, GMet predicts that there will be slightly longer days of no rain.

“March, April, May and June is the major rainfall season for the south of the country 8°N and below as well the Gulf of Guinea coast. At the peak of the MAM/AMJ season, there is a high probability of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning which could lead to localized floods. There is also a high probability of experiencing relatively long dry spells at the beginning and towards the end of the season,” it said in the forecast.

Noting that the onset of rains will commence on different dates within the period, GMet said areas within the forest zone will see rains much earlier than other parts of the country.

Areas along the western coast of the country will start experiencing rains between the first and fourth week of March while those lying on the eastern coast will have the season start for them between the second week of March and the second week of April.

The Upper West will have the rainy season starting between the third week of April and the first week of May while the Upper East area will be the last in the country to get into the rainy season.

The season starts between the fourth week of April and the second week of May.

    Caution over flooding

The Meteo agency indicated that due to the potential of flood in some parts of the country, organizations responsible for disaster management must consider relocating persons living in flood-prone areas while the public is sensitized about the “impending danger.”

It said, “the Municipal and Metropolitan authorities and the National disaster Agency are advised to put in place the necessary measures to ensure communities and livelihoods are safeguarded…Provide emergency/temporal sites for the victims and “ensure the Control/maintenance of dams and road infrastructure.”

It also called for the harvesting of rainwater and efforts made to store enough food.

GMet also called on Municipal and Metropolitan and District Assemblies to “desilt the drains before the rains set in to avoid water due to surface runoff that leads to flash flooding.”

  • Here is how you can support your friend who has been sexually assaulted

Offering support is way to help sexually abused survivors.

Sexual assault is illegal, unwanted or unwelcome form of sexual contact such as rape, touching or groping without consent.
Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, it is not gender specific or age specific.

Sexual assault victims find this to be a very traumatic one, thus it is important that as a friend or family or cousin to give them all the support because they would be needing a lot of it.

Knowing the right kind of words to say is also important, you do not want to say things that could result in them having flashbacks or panic attacks and in the long run, prevent stigmatization.

Here is how you can support your friend who has been sexually abused:

    1. Listen to them

At this point, they don’t need you to tell them why it happened or what they could have done to prevent it from happening. They don’t want to hear what you have to say if it is not going to make the situation better. They do not need you to judge them, all you need to do is listen to them. Don’t be too quick to speak, listen while they let everything all out.

    2. Show support

If your friend calls you and they tell you that they have been sexually assaulted, it is because they trust you and they feel you can support or help them.

Let them know that they have your unwavering support through their trying times. Follow them to the clinic or hospital, you can also follow them to the therapist. Let them know that you are on their side.

    3. Let them know that you believe them

One of the main reasons why rape survivors do not speak up is because they fear that society might not believe their sexual assault story. Do not interrogate them or try to challenge their story.

This helps to stop the stigmatization that usually surrounds rape.

  • Ghana close to obtaining FLEGT license – FC

The Forestry Commission (FC) says Ghana is close to obtaining the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Action Plan (FLEGT) license from the European Union (EU).

Mr. Chris Beeko, Director, Timber Validation Department of the Commission, is upbeat that the process would be completed this year, to pave the way for issuance of the license.

This would make Ghana the second country after Indonesia to receive the FLEGT license.

The West African country has taken measures to make sure that legally consigned timber get to the EU market and these include timber tracking and the setting up of a timber validation committee.

Additionally, the Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD) of the Commission has been designated as the licensing authority to deal with their EU counterparts.

Mr. Beeko was speaking to journalists after a tour of the Logs and lumber limited (LLL), a timber processing company, in Kumasi, with a delegation from the EU and officials of the FC.

The EU delegation led by, the Head, Ms. Diana Acconcia, was there to assess the progress the country is making as it readies for the issuance of the timber legality license.

Mr. Beeko said following the strong measures – system put in place by the FC, illegal logging had reduced drastically, especially, within the formal sector.

The system has been helping to identify stolen logs and making it difficult to sell or export such timber.

He said they had also upped efforts at restoring the forest cover through plantation development and rehabilitation of degraded forest reserves.

Ms. Acconcia said it was refreshing that companies like the LLL were capable of producing products in compliance with the EU market standards.

It has a 100 per cent of traceability of its products since the logs are from their own plantations.

In year 2009, Ghana entered into a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) with the EU, which said that Ghana would be trading with the EU under licenses that are called timber legality or FLEGT Licenses.

The country has therefore in the last 10 years, been implementing systems that would enable us to be issued with the licenses.

  • Galamsey Fight: Give Akufo-Addo more time MP begs Ghanaians

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manso-Adubia Constituency, Mr. Yaw Frimpong Addo believes President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo needs more time in his fight against illegal mining.

In an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com , he observed that the fight against the galamsey menace is not a week affair because it will take a lot of time for the government to deal with the matter holistically.

“The president has done a lot of work in preventing all forms of illegal mining across the country, he needs some time to complete totally”, he said, adding that previous NDC administration tried their best to stop galamsey but failed.

The NPP in his view, has however done its best in putting in place structures to license small-scale miners to engage in responsible mining.

President Akufo-Addo he added has shown enough commitment in ending galamsey, hence the need for Ghanaians to have patience since the fight will not be an easy one.

The MP who is also the Chairman for the Mines and Energy Committee said taking the minerals out should not lead to the pollution of our water bodies and the destruction of our forests.

In January 2017, the Government of Ghana placed a ban on small-scale mining for six months following the widespread pollution of water bodies. The ban was, however, extended in October 2017 for another three months.

  • Petrol consumption to go up 5% yearly, 49p charged as ESLA levy per litre

Consumption of petrol is projected to increase by 5% annually from 2021 to 2031, the Energy Support Levy Act (ESLA) Plc has forecast in its Supplementary Accounts.

This is based on a projected Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 7% this year for Ghana.

According to ESLA, demand for the product is mostly influenced by economic activities.

The volume of petrol will also jump from 903.2 million in 2020 litre to 1.54 billion litres in 2031.

Petroleum products to the mines are also projected to grow by 6% in 2020 due to an anticipated increase in the price of gold on the international market, thereby increasing demand for diesel for mining activities.

Meanwhile, 49 pesewas is presently being charged as ESLA levy on every litre of petrol and diesel bought at the pump from this year and above. In 2019, the levy charged was 41 pesewas per lite.

The rates were revised by the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2019 and duly assented in August 2019.

Presently, a gallon of petrol is going for about GHS23, depending on the oil marketing company.

ESLA Plc registered GHS14.9 million earnings in half-year 2019, according to its audited accounts.

Earnings per share for the period was, however, GHS14.92.

ESLA Plc has, since inception, issued bonds worth GHS6.664 billion.

  • Counting machines help maintain integrity of money business – BoG

Mr Kennedy Adu, Director of Banking Department at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on Thursday said improved money counting machines will help maintain integrity in the business of counting money.

Mr. Adu said there is the need to ensure the integrity of cash transactions in the country and it could only be achieved through usage of improved equipment to facilitate banking activities.

The BoG Director stated this at the Product Exhibition and Launch of new money counting machines by Krif Ghana, in Accra.

He said it is important that when you are being paid money, it is the exact amount you are expecting and it is very important that Banks are able to detect counterfeits, shortages, and mixed denominations in a bundle.

Mr Adu reiterated the need for stakeholders to join forces to chase out those who are involved in counterfeiting; “It is very important that we come out with equipment that will help us maintain the integrity in money business”.

He noted that highly improved new counting machines would help banks to sort out their currencies smoothly and prevent sanctions from BoG.

Rev. Kennedy Okusun, the Executive Chairman of Krif Ghana, said the new machines were introduced as a result of difficulties in counting the newly introduced currencies by some customers.

As a result, they teamed up with manufacturers of the money counting machines, Olympia of Germany and Magner of USA, to introduce new money handling machines of exceptional qualities onto the Ghanaian market.

He said the Olympia NC-540, Olympia NC-540, Olympia NC-620 had been specifically designed for the Ghanaian currency and would be able to count both the existing and the new cedi notes perfectly without any hitches or flaws.

“These machines do not make errors. Efficiency and accuracy are their hallmark and these are what we put at the disposal of everyone on the Ghanaian market,” he said

  • KNUST still a security zone Minister warns students

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been reminded that the declaration of the school as a security zone is still in force.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah on Wednesday wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University directing him to “uphold” the declaration until further notice.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council declared KNUST a security zone in September 2019 when it got intelligence that some people were plotting to disturb the peace of the University.

The reminder comes at a time some halls of the University were planning to observe their hall week celebrations between late February and early April. It might have been prompted by the bloody clash between two halls during similar event at the University of Cape Coast last week.

Read: UCC bans hall week celebrations following ATL, Oguaa brawl

“In this regard, anybody who directly or indirectly engages in activities that may disturb the peace on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology campus shall be sternly dealt with in accordance with the law,” the minister warned.

The Regional Security Council has also urged the management of the KNUST to ensure that all activities held in campus do not include demonstration or activities of mass movement that will disturb the peace on the University campus.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that students are reminded that the declaration of the University as a Security Zone is still in force and must be strictly observed,” the minister said.

Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah added, “Breaches will attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated with it.”

  • Police not equipped enough to fight ‘galamsey’ – Ken Ashigbey

The Convener of the media coalition against illegal mining, Ken Ashigbey has criticised the withdrawal of the military from the Operation Vanguard taskforce from all illegal mining areas.

There was a directive for all the military personnel to withdraw from Operation Vanguard and that is expected to begin today.

Reports say the police will take over the enforcement of anti-galamsey laws and Mr. Ashigbey believes that they are not well equipped for the task.

“To deal with these ‘galamseyers’, you need people who can move on the rivers we know the police are not equipped to be able to do that, you need to do fly pads with aircraft, drones and other machines and I am not too sure the police are equipped with that.”

“So this is where, when the President says the Media Coalition should continue the fight against ‘galamsey’, it is important that those who are in charge of this should be able to explain a bit more to the media what exactly the strategy is to be able to deal with this”.

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini also added his voice to the directive to withdraw the military from this fight.

According to him, the replacement of the soldiers with police officers will not be the solution to the fight to end illegal mining.

He suggested that the Chiefs and people in the areas where ‘galamsey’ is taking place should be involved in the fight because the team cannot be at every place all the time.

Reports suggest that this development came about as a result of the recent backlash from the public against the military, allegations of bribery in the fight against illegal mining, the lack of confidence from the public among others.

This necessitated the Military Command which is the seat of government to pull out and the police takeover because it is their main duty to do these things.

The issue of the missing ‘galamsey’ excavators has not also helped the course of the task force as some are alleging that they have a hand in it.

Operation Vanguard is a Military Police Joint Task Force (JTF) set up by the President of Ghana in 2017 to combat the operation of ‘galamsey’ in Ghana.

‘Galamseyers’ are illegal miners and have over the years depleted Ghana’s forest cover.

Their activities also pollute water bodies due to the crude and unregulated nature of the mining process.

  • Support fight against misinformation to preserve our democracy – Oppong Nkrumah

The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has charged media stakeholders to support the fight against misinformation to preserve confidence in democracy and public institutions.

He made these comments at the launch of Dubawa Ghana, a local chapter for independent verification and fact-checking in public discourse and journalism.

Speaking on the theme “stemming misinformation to advance democracy and good governance in Ghana” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated that “if consistently you keep reading or hearing whether it is fake news or false narratives about our body politic, about our institutions and about our democracy over a period, citizens begin to lose confidence in the democracy, in public institutions and in the governance systems”.

Misinformation has been on the rise in the country in recent times. The increasing spate of it has caused institutions particularly public institutions to be at the mercy of false or inaccurate information deliberately churned out to deceive sections of the public.

This Mr. Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that “if you clearly monitor what is happening in some part of the world, extremism may be not necessarily violent extremism but political extremism is beginning to gain hold because of all of these false narratives of blatantly fake materials that is been churned out into eco chambers that now begin to make people take some very intransigent positions on matters that we could have hitherto easily agreed upon”.

The Minister also indicated that Dubawa as a fact-checking platform came at the right time since the country is heading to the polls.

He acknowledged that the presence of a platform that can readily verify fact from politicians and public office holders will help the country a great deal. “The stakes are a bit higher in the 2020 elections and it is, therefore, heartwarming that it is at this time that Dubawa is being rolled out to help us combat this threat of misinformation” he added.

In a concluding remark, Hon. Oppong Nkrumah took the opportunity to encourage the media and the general public to lead the fight against misinformation.

He challenged the traditional media to “amplify truth and not necessarily add to the challenges in the statuesque” citing an example of a recent happening in Northern Ghana where security officers were grappling with a security situation as a result of misinformation peddled by some unknown people meant to destabilize the situation further.

Dubawa is a non-partisan institution that is bent on fostering a culture of truth and verification in public discourse and journalism through strategic partnerships between the media, government, civil society organizations, technology giants and the public.

As a fact checking institution, Dubawa upholds the values of accuracy, balance, transparency, verification, independence and accountability in its operations which is in line with the five principles of the International Fact Checking Network (IFCN).

  • Withdrawing soldiers from Operation Vanguard should be for limited period – Inusah Fuseini

Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister and MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini says the withdrawal of soldiers from Operation Vanguard should be for a limited period.

According to him, the replacement of the soldiers with immigration officers will not be the solution to the fight to end illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, Inusah Fuseini said the fight needs a multi-stakeholder and dimensional approach which he is not seeing with the current effort by government.

Ekosiisen’s report disclosed that immigration officers will replace soldiers on the Operation Vanguard team.

Inusah Fuseini said the taskforce being replaced with immigration officers will over some time also make them familiar with the people and the illicit act will still continue.

He suggested that the Chiefs and people in the area should be involved in the fight because the team cannot be at every place all the time.

Operation Vanguard ordered to withdraw from all illegal mining areas – Report

The report suggests that Operation Vanguard the anti-galamsey operation task force has been ordered to withdraw from all illegal mining areas in the country with immediate effect. Barring any last-minute changes, the soldiers will start pulling out from tomorrow and the immigration officers will take over fully.

Their base at Tarkwa in the Western Region is expected to start moving out tomorrow and the Ashanti Region will follow suit in March.

There are reports that this development came about as a result of the recent backlash from the public against the Military, allegations of bribery in the fight against illegal mining, the lack of confidence from the public among others.

This necessitated the Military Command which is the seat of government to pull out and the police takeover because it is their main duty to do these things.

The issue of the missing galamsey excavators has not also helped the course of the task force as some are alleging that they have a hand in it.

Operation Vanguard is a Military Police Joint Task Force (JTF) set up by the President of Ghana in 2017 to combat the operation of galamsey in Ghana. Galamseyers are illegal miners and have over the years depleted Ghana’s forest cover. Their activities also pollute water bodies due to the crude and unregulated nature of the mining process.
