  • Could North Korea handle a Covid-19 outbreak?

As the number of coronavirus cases in South Korea keeps on rising, attention is turning to how its impoverished neighbour might cope with an outbreak of its own.

North Korea is seen as highly vulnerable to infectious diseases, and its healthcare system ill-equipped to deal with them.

So far, the country claims to have no cases of Covid-19 – but some observers are questioning whether that can be true.

Experts say an outbreak in North Korea would be devastating for a population already suffering from malnourishment and poor health.

What are North Koreans hearing about the virus?

North Korea has been unusually upfront about the need to prevent the virus spreading, describing it as a matter of “national survival” and urging “revolutionary” measures.

State media and officials have repeatedly stressed there are no cases in the country – while warning they should not let their guard down.

Information is being pumped out almost on a daily basis on the “high-intensity” steps taken to prevent coronavirus – as well as the need to practise responsible hygiene.

Images have been broadcast of workers in protective suits disinfecting public spaces and health workers educating the public on symptoms of the disease.

Premier Kim Jae Ryong has been pictured wearing a face mask while guiding “anti-epidemic” efforts. There has also been heavy coverage of the spread of Covid-19 in China and internationally.

State-run Korean Central Television (KCTV), too, has featured daily broadcasts on the efforts to prevent an outbreak, even running special a programme: “Let us completely block the novel coronavirus”.

North Korean media have also been pushing out unverified claims of medicines. Propaganda website Sogwang reported that burdock is a cure for the coronavirus, while promoting a medicine made with it.

What healthcare does North Korea have?

North Korea claims its public health system is world class. But international experts say it is appalling, with some hospitals even lacking electricity and running water.

Outside of Pyongyang, there are no medical facilities to speak of, and there have been concerns that virus cases may be going undetected in rural areas.

On paper, North Korea provides free universal healthcare to its people at government-operated centres, but the system is said to favour the elite.

In NK News’ “Ask a North Korean” feature, defector Tae-il Shim said that citizens had better treatment in the 1970s and 1980s under Kim Il-sung, the nation’s founder.

“North Korean unpreparedness to deal with a pandemic could undermine regime rule and create internal instability,” said Kevin Shepard, a defence policy analyst, in an article on NK News.

In 2019, North Korea was ranked amongst the worst in the world in terms of preparedness for a disease outbreak, according to the Global Health Security Index published by US-based Johns Hopkins University.

Doubts have also been raised about North Korea’s ability to test for the virus – even though state media has reported on factories producing test-kits, facial masks and disinfectants.

Furthermore, sanctions have restricted North Korea’s ability to get advanced medical equipment.

Even Kim Jong-un admitted late last year that high-quality medical equipment was “badly needed” in the country.

What measures has North Korea taken?

North Korea has declared the threat of coronavirus a “national emergency” and taken drastic steps.

It was among the first countries to close off its border with China, and has temporarily barred all foreign tourism. It has also suspended flights and railway services from China and Russia.

North Korea has also expanded quarantine of foreigners from 15 days to 30 days, and even imposed restrictions on aid workers and international health agencies.

Recently, North Korea has also rejected the UK’s request to rescue Britons being held in quarantine inside the country.

It has tightened customs-related quarantine measures, and all goods arriving at North Korean ports or passing through border bridges are kept in isolated areas for 10 days.

North Korea has also reportedly made cremation mandatory for dead people (as opposed to burial). It has restricted public gatherings and reportedly closed schools throughout the country for a month.

The government has even sent aid and medical supplies to China – an unusual move given that aid often flows the other way around.

What impact is the virus having?

North Korea relies heavily on trade with China – which accounts for almost 90% of all foreign trade – so a border shutdown will hit the economy hard in the short-run.

North Korea’s network of smugglers and traders that operate along the border will feel the impact, as will the private markets that have flourished under Kim Jong-un.

Further, North Korea’s plans to earn hard currency via foreign tourism – which is not subject to international sanctions – seem to have been derailed, and the Pyongyang Marathon was cancelled.

Besides the economy, North Korea’s diplomatic work has also been put “on hold“.

Quarantine measures have left foreign embassies in Pyongyang unable to properly perform their duties, Russia’s ambassador to the DPRK was quoted as saying in an article for Russia’s TASS news agency.

Some outlets have suggested that fears of the virus may also have prompted North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to reduce his public appearances and cancel military parades.

How did North Korea deal with past health crises?

North Korea’s responses to the Ebola outbreak in 2014 and Sars in early 2000s were far more restrained than for Covid-19.

North Korea’s announcement of the Ebola outbreak in 2014 came quite late, some eight months after the disease took hold in West Africa.

It barred foreign tourism and banned North Koreans from going abroad, according to an article in US-based 38North website. It also put foreign nationals under medical observation for 21 days.

North Korea did not close the border entirely during the Sars outbreak, and banned travel from only certain places where the infection had spread.

Flights to Beijing were suspended for a month, and entrants to North Korea required a special approval. It also quarantined people coming from Sars-affected countries for 10 days.

North Korea did not report any case of 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak initially – but months later reported that nine patients had been diagnosed with the disease.

“North Korea’s handling of the coronavirus is unusually high-profile compared to past epidemics and reflects regime concern about the issue,” Minyoung Lee, a senior analyst with NK News, said.

  • Zidane unsure if Hazard will play for Real Madrid again this season

Zinedine Zidane is unsure if Eden Hazard will play again this season but has justified Real Madrid’s handling of the forward’s ankle injury problems following his latest lay-off.

The Belgium international hobbled off in the second half of Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Levante on Saturday and scans the following day confirmed he suffered a hairline fracture to his right ankle.

Madrid did not put a timeframe on his return, but it marked a huge blow ahead of a midweek Champions League encounter with Manchester City and Sunday’s Clasico clash with Barcelona.

And Zidane does not know if the 29-year-old – who had only just returned from a three-month absence with a similar issue – will be fit before the end of the campaign.

“I can’t tell you. It is hard to say,” Zidane said at a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s last-16 first-leg meeting with City.

“We don’t know if he will be operated on, but he’s obviously not happy. He had been out for almost three months and then played two games and picked up an injury.

“Obviously it is very bad news for him, but I can’t tell you if he’s going to be back before the season is over.”

Madrid are reportedly deliberating over whether to operate on Hazard, who is set to miss more action for Los Blancos in his maiden campaign than he did in seven seasons with former side Chelsea.

However, Zidane insists it is not a straightforward call to make and is simply hoping to see a fully fit Hazard back in action sooner rather than later.

“I’m not the right person to tell you what should have been done and what shouldn’t have,” he said. “Obviously we are not happy about his injury.

“It comes at a bad moment and I feel bad for him because he wanted to play and help us and now he’s out again. It is sad of course.

“I just hope when he’s back again he’s absolutely fit. That’s what he wants and what we want. But it’s a tough moment for him.

“I can’t tell you what I see in his eyes but I can tell you he’s not happy. It’s very important for him to stay positive but it is a bad moment for him.

“It won’t be easy and he will feel like that for some time. He loves being with us and helping us – that won’t change – but knowing he can’t play right now is very bad news for him.”

  • GhIPSS concluding preparations for the launch of QR code next month

The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) is wrapping up preparations for the launch of the universal QR code next month, Mr Archie Hesse, the Chief Executive of Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), has said.

A QR code is a two-dimensional code made up of black and white squares that could be read by smartphone cameras, point of sale (POS) terminals or other devices.

It is scanned for payment but can also be used for other purposes.

QR code was first invented in 1994 for the automotive industry in Japan and patented by Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave.

It has since been used in many contexts, for instance marketing and information sharing, but it is now becoming a popular way for people to make mobile payments.

Mr Hesse said when the universal QR code goes live, banks and Fintechs will help shops, pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and other merchants to set it up and display at their various outlets.

This will enable customers to scan the displayed codes with their smart phones to make payment.

Customers who do not have smart phones can pay with their feature phones by dialling a code that will also be displayed at the merchant’s location.

The GhIPSS CEO said the QR code payments could either be made with funds from any mobile money wallet or any bank account.

He explained that because Ghana has an interoperable payment infrastructure, customers can use any of these modes of payments.

QR code is an abbreviation for Quick Response code. It has been around for a while but begun making inroads from 2011 when two key payment apps, WeChat and Alipay in China started offering proprietary versions.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia gave hint of the launch of the universal code, which he described as a game changer for payments in Ghana and the first of its kind in Africa.

QR codes are less expensive to set up, convenient and easy way to make and receive payments, which will also ensure that every payment made hits the account of the shop owner instantly.

Mr Hesse urged merchants to start engaging their banks in readiness for the launch.

  • Publish ‘dumsor’ time table in 24 hours or face our wrath Jinapor to Amewu

The Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, has cautioned Energy Minister, Mr Peter Amewu to “lift his unlawful gagging orders which he has imposed on the Power Sector SOEs preventing them from publishing an already prepared load shedding time table.”

This comes on the back of the recent power outages in some parts of the country.

According to Mr Jinapor, GRIDCo has been “clandestinely” shedding about 200MW since the first week of February this year with no end in sight.

“Let me be clear, that the dreaded dumsor which the Mahama administration resolved is sadly back due to the ineptitude and mismanagement of the energy sector,” Mr Jinapor said in a statement.

“Ironically, this government has consistently maintained that the nation has too much power generation and does not even know what to do with the excess capacity.

“Today, the Ministry of Energy having been exposed badly with the current dumsor the nation is witnessing is moving away from its earlier position that Power outages was solely a result of financial challenges,” he added.

According to the lawmaker, the Akufo-Addo-led government has not procured a single drum of Light Crude Oil (LCO) since 2019.

Mr Jinapor who was the former Deputy Energy Minister in the erstwhile Mahama administration says the government should desist from the “blatant deception” and publish the load shedding time table to enable Ghanaians plan their daily schedules.

“The Minister of Energy is hereby put on notice that failure to comply within 24 hours will compel us to explore all available options under the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament not excluding a vote of censure on him,” he said.

  • NHIA pays over GhC 91m in claims

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has made payments of over Gh¢ 91 million to credentialed service providers who submitted their claims vouchers on time.

In the order of payments, a total of 4,292 service providers comprising 2,993 public health facilities, 1,038 private health facilities, 228, mission health facilities and 33 quasi-government health facilities received the payment early 2020.

The public health facilities received a total of Gh¢ 49, 845,207.91 representing 69.7% of the payments whiles the private service providers were paid Gh¢26,033,139.75 pegged at 28.3%.

Mission health facilities (CHAG) received Gh¢15,173,008.28 representing 16.5% and quasi-government service providers were paid Gh¢846,565.84 pegged at 0.9% of the total payments made.

Similarly, Gh¢ 857 million was paid as claims to service providers in the year 2019.

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the NHIA said service providers now receive their reimbursements in an average of six months in arrears instead of over 12 months.

It indicated that the four NHIA Claims Processing Centers around the country have put in place more efficient measures to speed up the vetting and payment process.

“All these are done to ensure that NHIS members receive quality healthcare. NHIA Service Providers who have any enquiries regarding their Claims submitted should email their concerns to claimspayment@nhia.gov.gh for swift redress,” it stated.

Since its introduction, the NHIS has over the years grown to become a major instrument for financing health care delivery in Ghana becoming the financial mainstay of over 4, 600 credentialed healthcare service providers in the country accounting for more than 85% of funds that flow into healthcare facilities to treat NHIS members.

The scheme is credited with improvements in the healthcare-seeking behavior of many people in Ghana who now tend to seek medical attention earlier than before, thereby avoiding unnecessary deterioration in their health conditions.

  • Klopp thought matching Man City’s winning-streak record was impossible

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he “never thought it was possible” for his side to equal Manchester City’s record of 18 consecutive Premier League wins.

The league leaders joined City in an English top-flight record with a 3-2 victory over West Ham on Monday.

City won 18 straight games between August and December 2017.

“It’s so special. The numbers are incredible, so difficult. I said we wanted to write our own stories, create our own history,” said Klopp.

“Obviously, the boys took that really seriously and that is all cool but just not too important at the moment.

“We are just in the situation and want to recover and prepare for the next game.”

The last time Liverpool dropped points in the league was in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on 20 October 2019.

Victory over West Ham at Anfield, where keeper Lukasz Fabianski suffered a nightmare, took Liverpool to within four wins of their first league title in 30 years.

Liverpool took an early lead when Fabianski failed to deal with a routine Georginio Wijnaldum header but David Moyes’ side replied through Issa Diop’s header and then substitute Pablo Fornals swept West Ham into the lead nine minutes after the break.

But Fabianski inexplicably allowed Mohamed Salah’s shot to squirm through his legs in the 68th minute and Sadio Mane turned in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s lob with nine minutes left to complete the comeback.

It means Liverpool are 22 points clear of defending champions City at the top of the table.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better position to go into these last 11 games,” Klopp added. “I never thought it was possible but each one of [the victories are] really difficult.”

What other records have Liverpool got this season?

    – Liverpool have won their past 21 home Premier League games, equalling the English top-flight record for consecutive home wins, set by the Reds themselves between January and December 1972 under Bill Shankly.

    – Klopp’s side can amass 112 points this season – no title-winning team has achieved that in England.

    – This is now Liverpool’s longest unbeaten run, beating the 37 that concluded in 1894.

    – Liverpool’s last defeat in the league came at Etihad Stadium against Manchester City on 3 January, 2019. They’ve only dropped 10 points in total since then.

    – The last time Liverpool failed to score was in the 0-0 draw at Merseyside rivals Everton on 3 March, 2019.

    – The earliest Premier League title win was achieved by Manchester United when they claimed victory in 2000-01 on 14 April. If the Reds keep winning, they could win the title in March.

    – Liverpool have the best-ever tally at this stage of the season by a side in any of Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues – England, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

  • Six Nations games under threat, Serie A matches behind closed doors – coronavirus hits Italian sport

Six Nations games featuring Italy are under threat with organisers “monitoring very closely” the coronavirus situation.

This weekend five Serie A matches will be played behind closed doors – including Juventus’ match at home to Inter – because of the outbreak.

Seven people have died in Italy and 229 tested positive for the virus, while 11 towns in the north are in lockdown.

Ferrari says it has taken measures to limit the impact of the outbreak.

The Formula 1 giants, which are based in northern Italy, said in a statement that it had “restricted access to the factory for employees that are resident in or have visited the affected municipalities”.

Italy’s men’s and women’s teams play in Ireland in two weeks before hosting England in the final round. Those games are now all under threat.

Scotland women’s match in Italy on Sunday was cancelled and is yet to be rearranged.

“Six Nations is monitoring this situation very closely and is in regular contact with the FIR [Italian Rugby Federation] and all other unions and federations as well as the relevant local authorities and health organisations,” a statement from the organisers said.

An FIR spokesperson said that if government advice changes they would consider moving the women’s team’s next training camp, which is scheduled to take place in Parma, just south of the at-risk Lombardy and Veneto regions.

The Serie A schedule this weekend has been disrupted because of coronavirus.

Matches at Udinese, AC Milan, Parma and Sassuolo will take place without fans.

Games at Lazio, Napoli, Lecce and Cagliari will go ahead with supporters as normal, but Sampdoria’s match on Monday is yet to be decided upon.

Inter’s Europa League last-32 home match against Ludogorets on Thursday will also be played behind closed doors because of fears about the possible spread of the virus.

Inter were one of four Serie A clubs to postpone their games last weekend.

Serie A fixtures to be played behind closed doors: Juventus v Inter (Sun, 19:45 GMT); Udinese v Fiorentina (Sat, 17:00 GMT); AC Milan v Genoa (Sun, 11:30 GMT); Parma v Spal (Sun, 14:00 GMT); Sassuolo v Brescia (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

Serie A matches to be played with fans: Lazio v Bologna (Sat, 14:00 GMT); Napoli v Torino (Sat, 19:45 GMT); Lecce v Atalanta (Sun, 14:00 GMT); Cagliari v Roma (Sun, 17:00 GMT)

Still to be decided: Sampdoria v Hellas Verona (Mon, 19:45 GMT)

  • Current ‘dumsor’ to end next week – Deputy Energy Minister

The Deputy Minister for Energy William Owuraku Aidoo says frequent power cuts in parts of the country over the past weeks will ease by the first week of March 2020.

Mr Aidoo who was speaking to JoyNews on February 25, 2020, said the current power outages are caused by the ongoing repair works on the gas pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana which is almost complete and power supply will soon return to normal.

“This is going to be for just a few more days, and we will come to normal… It is not as people have been saying that ‘dumsor’ is back and we’ve gone back to the bad old days again, no. This is work that needed to be done to ensure the integrity of the pipeline and gas supply to our generators,” Mr. Owuraku Aidoo said on Newsnight.”We apologise for the inconvenience… the engineers are working,” he said.

The Deputy Minister, however, recalled an announcement from his outfit on January 18, 19 and 20 informing the public of the scheduled “…major works on the pipeline, the 500 km pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana which supplies gas to mainly the Tema enclave, that there was going to be cleaning out [in] the gas pipeline and check on the integrity of the inner lining of the gas pipeline.”

“We did take steps to try and reduce to the barest minimum the interruptions in the power supply because we shouldn’t forget that Ghana, of course, we have our own indigenous gas that we can flow from the west to the east, but unfortunately because of this work, the gas from the west to the east, that is from Takoradi to the Tema enclave could not also be supplied,” Mr. Aidoo added.

He gave the assurance that gas will be introduced through the Tema end of the pipeline and supply will come back to normal once the repair works are done.

According to the Deputy Minister, a back-up arrangement to ensure the public did not suffer the impact of the exercise, hit a snag after some power plants expected to generate about 400 megawatts, went off.

“The Kpone Thermal Plant, we’ve lost one of the generators, which is giving us something in the region of 100 megawatts. We have also lost the TICO Plant [Takoradi International Plant], we’ve lost parts of it as well, which were not foreseen. We made all these plans and unfortunately this has happened. Cenpower also, we were taking 180, a combination of 360, one turbine is gone off losing 180 so when we combine these unforeseen generators that have gone off…right now we are losing something in the region of between 100 and 200 megawatts.”

“The plants that have gone down that I have enumerated amounts to well over 300, almost 400 megawatts, so that is what has caused this problem but like I said, this is going to be for a few more days and we will come back to normalcy.”

“So I’ll apologise once again on behalf of the Ministry of Energy that we will come back to normal. It is not as people have been saying that ‘dumsor’ is back and we’ve gone back to the bad old days again, no. This is work that needed to be done to ensure the integrity of the pipeline and gas supply to our generators.”

  • Okumkom worked with the zeal of a military commander at the war front Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings joined hundreds in Manhyia, Kumasi on Monday to pay their last respects to the late Nana Akwasi Agyeman, an Ashanti Royal, former Deputy Minister and a former Municipal Chief Executive of Kumasi.

A grand durbar hosted by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who sat in state with several leading Ashanti chiefs was also attended by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama as well as several Ministers of State, the Chief Justice, corporate leaders and people from all walks of life.

The former President and his wife personally commiserated with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as he sat in state and took time to also commiserate with chiefs and queenmothers present at the durbar.

Nana Akwasi Agyeman, who spent most of his political office during the tenure of former President Rawlings was popularly known for his no-nonsense approach as the longest serving Mayor of Kumasi. He was later appointed Deputy Minister of Environment in charge of the northern sector.

In a tribute to Nana Akwasi Agyeman, popularly referred to as Okumkom, the former President described him as “a man who was available at the right time and at the right place. His vibrancy helped to ensure command and control. He approached the role with the zeal of a military commander at the war front.

“Discipline was key in achieving his objectives and he was not one to stay in the office and bellow out orders. He bellowed out orders all right, but out in the open, directly supervising and exhibiting an enviable hands-on approach. He enjoyed working and the tempo of the revolution sat well with his temperament.”

  • Moves to decongest KIAs Terminal Three appropriate

The move by the Ghana Airport Company to refurbish terminals 1 and 2 of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) so as to ease the pressure and congestion at Terminal Three is very apt.

Terminal Three, which is the latest addition to the year and a half of the operation at Terminal Three has seen a volume of not less than 3 million passengers which invariably means, the new terminal will hit its maximum capacity very soon.

Therefore, there are worries that Terminal 3 will soon hit the five million passenger throughput, and measures need to be put in place to accommodate spill-overs.

The move, when adopted, will see Terminal 2 catering for regional flights to reduce pressure on Terminal 3, which is currently accommodating international and regional flights. Ever since Terminal Three stated catering to international flights, both terminal 1 and 2 have not been fully utilized.

Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda, briefed Parliament last week about measures being put in place to ensure that KIA is safe as the increasing passenger throughput at the new terminal 1 and 2 gives cause for concern.

Aviation Minister Adda explained that Terminal Two would be refurbished to cater for regional flights while Terminal one will be refurbished to cater for domestic flights. The move to decongest terminal three is very apt because the current pressure on the new Terminal Three could see the facilities over-stretched and could be depreciating faster than expected.

If we are to prolong the life-span of the new Terminal which is the pride of KIA, then we would have to reduce the current pressure on the facility and refurbish the previous two terminals to take up some of the passenger throughput.

However, the major challenge facing the airport company is logistics and the availability of Immigration and Customs officials to process passengers who will pass through Terminal 2 when regional flights are pushed there.

Well, that hurdle has to be overcome if indeed, the country intends to make the KIA the aviation hub of the sub-region. The Ghana Airport Company must come up with innovative ideas to raise funds to procure the needed logistics to put the KIA in the position we desire as a nation.

  • AfCFTA readiness assessment consultation begins in Accra

A nationwide consultation with the Ghanaian private sector to access their readiness for African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) implementation has begun in Accra.

The consultation is focusing on six sectors of Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) members who are in agri-business, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and herbal, garment, textile and leather, plastics and hardware as well as hospitality and tourism industry sectors.

“The stakeholder consultation with the private sector is very important as it would help in assessing their knowledge and understanding of AfCFTA, rules of origin, capacity to produce and export to other African countries as well as identifying the challenges that would impede their ability to take full advantage of the AfCFTA,” said Appiah Kusi Adomako, the Country Director for CUTS.

Mr. Adomako added that the ability of Ghana to take full advantage of the AfCFTA agreement depends largely on the readiness of the Ghanaian industry. Whilst a company can be ready at the firm level, there is also the need for our macroeconomic variables to be ready. For example firm in Ghana which borrows on the average of 28% per annum cannot compete with firms in South Africa, Rwanda, Mauritius that borrow on an average of 7 percent per annum.

The consultation forms part of a study assessing the readiness of the Ghanaian private sector for AfCFTA implementation. The study is being undertaken by a research and advocacy policy think called CUTS with support from the BUSAC Fund.

BUSAC Fund is a donor pooled fund to support private sector advocacy and it is supported by the DANIDA and the USAID.

It is expected that the study will produce a diagnostic report which will help to develop practical steps in addressing the gaps and challenges identified by the private sector with regards to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

  • Current shortfall in electricity supply to end next week – Deputy Energy Minister

Cenpower also, we were taking 180, a combination of 360, one turbine is gone off losing 180 so when we combine these unforeseen generators that have gone off…, right now we are losing something in the region of between 100 and 200 megawatts.

“The plants that have gone down that I have enumerated amounts to well over 300, almost 400 megawatts, so that is what has caused this problem but like I said, this is going to be for a few more days and we will come back to normalcy. So I’ll apologise once again on behalf of the Ministry of Energy that we will come back to normal. It is not as people have been saying that ‘dumsor’ is back and we’ve gone back to the bad old days again, no. This is work that needed to be done to ensure the integrity of the pipeline and gas supply to our generators.”

  • Volta Region needs development projects, not empty frequent visits – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region says the Region needs projects that would enhance its socio-economic development, “not empty frequent visits from the President.”

The Party said the President had demonstrated in his recent visits to the Region that he had nothing to show in terms of development for the people of the Region.

Mr Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze Volta Regional Communications Officer of the Party, in a press release signed and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on several platforms promised to develop the Region, “however, there are no concrete indications pointing to the fulfillment of those promises.”

He said during the State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) in 2019, the President said a consortium of local banks had raised 51 million dollars to fund the completion of the housing units started by former President Kuffour’s administration in 2006 at Koforidua, Tamale and in Ho.

Mr Agbleze said, however, there were no housing projects “anywhere in and around Ho” and not even a “dime” of the 51 million dollars raised by the consortium of banks as stated by the President, came to Volta Region for any housing project.

He said the President in 2018 signed an Executive Instrument to commence the construction of a seaport in Keta, and subsequently appointed Dr Alexander Adusei as Director of, “the yet-to-be constructed Keta Port, a situation that has caused many to express misgivings about the project.”

Mr Agbleze alleged that though the project had not started, Dr Alexander Adusei Junior continued to draw salary for 10 months since his appointment for no work done, asking, “why should the nation continue to pay Dr. Adusei when all he could show of the port project is a small bill board with the inscription, ‘Site for the Keta Port’.”

He said the President himself had not shown much commitment on his part towards the project as there was no financial commitment on the side of the government in the 2019 Budget towards it, and “interesting too, there was no mention of the Keta Port in 2020 Budget either.”

Mr Agbleze said many young people in the region also lost their jobs as a result of government’s approach to the banking sector clean up and the closure of nine radio stations and said, “we want to also assure the President that he is at liberty to frequently visit the region as he so wishes, however, those visits will be meaningless if it does not translate into tangible development of the region.”

The Communications Director, said the Volta Region under former President John Dramani Mahama’s Administration witnessed several development projects in health, education, infrastructure, road, water among others.

  • Sanction Appeals Court Judge for endorsing Nana Addo V/R NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Volta Regional Secretariat has condemned the Paramount Chief of the Nyagbo Traditional Area, who doubles as an Appeals Court Judge, Justice Clement Jackson Honyenuga for endorsing the candidature of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Justice Honyenuga in his welcome address to President Akufo-Addo at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Afajato South District had commended the President for various developmental policies introduced under his leadership.

He said “with the vision of the President and the gains made in his first term, Ghanaians may consider giving him another four years” to the loud cheers of people at the durbar grounds.

The Secretariat in a statement signed by the Volta Regional Chairman, Henry Kwadzo Ametefe said the endorsement violates the Judicial code of conduct.

“While taking due cognizance of the fact that Justice Honyenuga may have made those comments in his capacity as a traditional ruler, it is reprehensible and regrettable, especially for a man who is supposed to know our laws better than any ordinary man and to uphold and respect same”.

“Not only is this conduct by the Appeals Court Judge a blatant violation of the Judicial Code of Conduct but it very well sins against the very sanctity of the institution of Judiciary as we know it.”

The Secretariat also called on the Judicial Council and the General Legal Council, the Chairman of which is the Chief Justice himself to take judicial notice of his actions and “take appropriate action.”

  • I cant investigate galamsey loot Special Prosecutor to ASEPA

Special prosecutor, Martin ABK Amidu says he cannot investigate the galamsey loot as petitioned by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability(ASEPA) insisting the issue does not warrant any investigation by his office.

In a correspondence sighted by Kasapafmonline.com and dated February 24, 2020 from the Office of the Special Prosecutor following the Petition said: “A review of your letter of complaint, however, has led this Office to the conclusion that the facts and conjectures upon which you underpin your complaint do not raise any issues of corruption and corruption-related offences as narrowly defined under section 79 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959)…”

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) last week petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate alleged acts of thievery and corruption frustrating the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The public accountability civil advocacy group, invoking Act 959 of the Special Prosecutor Act alleged that an audio circulating on social media and purported to be of a conversation between Environment, Science and Technology Minister, Professor Frimpong Boateng and the Central Regional Vice-Chairman of the NPP, Ekow Ewusi, is enough evidence of the alleged corrupt acts ridiculing the fight.

But the Special Prosecutor in his response to ASEPA said in view of the fact that the issues raised in the petition will aid the Police in investigations already set into the matter, it will forward a copy of the petition to the Police CID for possible action.

“Your letter with reference number ASEPA/DOC8I/20 dated 18th February 2020 which was received on the same day on the above subject matter refers. The Criminal Investigations Division of the Ghana Police Service had already commenced investigations into the matters referred to in your letter long before you submitted your letter to this Office. In those circumstances, it would not have been in the interest of safeguarding the public purse for this Office to refer to its Investigation Division the same matters for investigation concurrently even if your complaint fell within the mandate of this Office. A review of your letter of complaint, however, has led this Office to the conclusion that the facts and conjectures upon which you underpin your complaint do not raise any issues of corruption and corruption-related offences as narrowly defined under section 79 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) to warrant any investigation by this Office. In view of the fact that the matters disclosed in your letter may aid the Ghana Police Service in their investigations, this Office is by a copy of this letter forwarding a photocopy of your letter to Criminal investigations Department of the Police Service for consideration and possible action”.

  • Kevin-Prince Boateng declares love for Turkey

Former Ghana International Kevin-Prince Boateng is on loan from AC Fiorentina to Besiktas Istanbul in Turkey.

And it has become clear early on, It could be more than just a friendship, because Boateng is characterized by a special feature.

Ibrahim Tatlises is an icon. He shaped arabesque music like no other, sold millions of albums, played in numerous Turkish blockbusters and became a cult figure that is second to none.

His fame extends beyond the borders. He is particularly popular in the Middle East due to his style, concerts in the Arab region were always sold out, combined with crowds that were frenetically waiting for their Messiah

Did Kevin-Prince Boateng need the Harald Schmidt show to take Ibo to his heart? Probably not. Born in Wedding, grew up in Berlin, in the midst of Turks, Kurds, and Arabs, culture was no stranger to him. When Boateng lists the languages ??he knows today, he also includes Turkish.

So it was no surprise that Kevin-Prince Boateng was in his car last year, recording a video on the streets of Barcelona listening to the popular Tatlises song “Bitanem” and singing along.

In a scene that makes many genuine Turks blush. Bitanem translates to “my only one”, a love song from the Arabesque direction.

A declaration of love that captivated millions. A declaration of love from Boateng, who greets his Turkish followers at the end of the video

Since then, it has only been a question of when Boateng will finally show up in Istanbul to play football.

Because in the past few years there had been repeated tech fights between Boateng and the Istanbul clubs.

Galatasaray is said to have made a specific request last season, but then did not respond.

In winter Besiktas nailed it and borrowed the attacking midfielder until the end of the season.

The joy among Besiktas fans about the last-minute addition was huge.

The clammy club, which is struggling with a heavy debt burden and actually had no room for new players at all, brought in an internationally experienced and respected veteran, which was reason enough to be happy.

But then there is the status of Boateng himself. The man who always had sympathy, although he never played in Turkey.

When Boateng was attacked in Germany for fouling Michael Ballack, Boateng was in favor. When he signed in Barcelona, ??they were happy with him. Guys like Boateng, who have corners and edges, have always been well received on the Bosphorus. Then you forgive one or two escapades

But Boateng made a good impression straight away, scored his first goal for Besiktas on his debut against Gaziantepspor FK and was celebrated afterwards with: Bitanem. “It was a great start, of course. It’s never too late in life, but when I think of the atmosphere, I thought that I could have come earlier.” Boateng is a leader straight away in a team that was put together poorly before the season – also due to lack of funds – and hardly met expectations.

One day before the Boateng change, Besiktas confirmed the return of Sergen Yalcin.

The former legend as number 10 was brought in at the end of January as a new coach, the successor to the hapless Abdullah Avci. “We are still getting to know each other,” says Boateng, but Yalcin knows how to use his new man. Offensive, behind the peaks, with a tendency for the second striker. And it works. Since he also played 14 games in Florence, Boateng didn’t need a lot of start-up time.

But how should it go on? Besiktas is the 13th station in Boateng’s 14th year. “Turkey was still missing from the collection,” Boateng says with a smile: “I don’t know if I wanted to. If you asked a child today, it would say that it would play the whole career at a club to become a legend there. ” But Boateng also gains something positive from his wanderlust: “I have learned different cultures and languages, so I have no regrets.” He can get used to a longer stay in Turkey. “I would like to stay three years, but I have to ask my wife first.” If Boateng stays, he has to do one thing. “If we become champions, I will sing ‘Bitanem’ in the stadium.” Ibo will be happy.

KF Tirana player Winful Cobbina has expounded on why he sometimes disappear in games after popping up with a remarkable assist in their 2-1 win against Kukesi on Friday.

Cobbina started the match against Kukesi brightly but faded midway through the encounter before coming up with a fantastic assist.

The former Hearts of Oak ace conjured a magic in the 84th minute to provide a Ronaldinho-like assist for Idriz Batha to tap into an empty net during the top of table clash against Kukesi.

“It’s the second season here and I’m adjusted to the environment, the people and the system. So I’m in better shape. We are convincingly back as a team and not without merit leading the championship.”

“Sometimes it’s a game plan, a tactic. I have to rest and then “boom”. My disappearance is for energy recovery. Would you leave me alone for 70 minutes? You have to train with us to understand. It’s not that I’m tired, but we have to adapt to the game and hit the opponent at the right time.”

“Favorites in attack? Both are good players. Mucci is young and talented, Michael has experience. It is important that the players’ abilities go to the benefit of the team. Both did their part. I can’t choose who to play with, we’re all a team.”

The parliamentary primaries are expected to come off on April 25, 2020 across the country. But the aspirants first have to successfully sail through vetting scheduled from February 28 to March 8, 2020.

Though the party intends to organize the exercise at the constituency level, a vibrant youth group aligned with the NPP, Students Network for Nana Akufo-Addo (STUNNAD) has urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to consider decentralizing the upcoming parliamentary primaries.

  • Kency2020: I don’t Know Tracy’s mother – Prophet Daniel Amoateng breaks silence

Whiles Ghanaians were amazed at the turn of events and public show off wealth at the wedding of the son of Osei Kwame Despite, Kennedy Osei about a week ago, a prophet’s name was also discussed on social media.

In a viral video, one prophet of the Power of Worship International, Daniel Amoateng was seen prophesying into the future of Tracy Akosua Gyamfuaa Ameyaw now Mrs. Tracy Osei.

“Young girl I prophecy over your destiny, no more disappointment. You will be one of the people that your marriage will be nice. Your marriage will be so good. May there be no contention,” the prophet told her in full glare of a congregation.

Whiles many believed it was true, there was another group of people who doubted the accuracy of the prophecy.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Bernice Owusuwaa in a one-on-one interview, Prophet Daniel Amoateng for the first time has commented on the issue.

Exclusively, he told GhanaWeb that he has no personal relationship with the mother of Tracy contrary to what is being circulated.

“I don’t know Tracy’s mother. I have never met her before,” he told GhanaWeb.

When probed further, he had a message for critics who doubted his prophecy.

“Do you know something, when the people say it’s not true…our mindset has been programmed that God cannot work and God doesn’t still have prophets. Because how can one say the prophecy is not true…there are people who have received prophecy and didn’t happen.

Some people have dated for 8 years, but nothing has happened. But it shows you that people don’t really trust the power of God. And I don’t blame them, I’m sure they have been getting prophecies and none of them are coming to pass. So we don’t know the mother and the lady too that was her first time coming to the church.”

  • Kobe Bryant: Wife Vanessa leads emotional memorial to basketball star and daughter Gianna

Vanessa Bryant has given a moving tribute to her late husband, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, and daughter Gianna at a memorial service in Los Angeles.

Former Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Bryant, 41, and Gianna, 13, were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash last month.

Thousands of fans, celebrities and basketball stars attended Monday’s ceremony at the Staples Center.

“Kobe was the MVP of girl dads,” said Vanessa.

“He was the most amazing husband – Kobe loved me more than I could ever express or put into words.”

Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, and Vanessa have three other daughters, Natalia, Bianca and Capri.

“He isn’t going to be able to walk our girls down the aisle or spin me around on the dance floor,” said Vanessa, who was speaking publicly for the first time since the crash.

“But I want my daughters to know and remember the amazing person, husband and father he was, the kind of man that wanted to teach the future generations to be better and keep from making his own mistakes.”

Vanessa started by remembering her daughter, nicknamed ‘Gigi’, as an “amazingly sweet and thoughtful soul,” who loved baking and dancing, as well as being a talented basketball player.

“Gigi would have most likely become the best player in the WNBA,” she said.

“I’ll never get to see my baby girl walk down the aisle, have a father-daughter dance with her daddy, dance on the dance floor with me or have babies of her own.

“Gianna would have been an amazing mommy.”

Vanessa called her late husband, who she had been with since she was 17, her “soulmate” and recalled his love of romantic movies and how he was a “doting, hands on” father.

“Babe, you take care of our Gigi,” she said, addressing Bryant.

“We’re still the best team – may you both rest in peace and have fun in heaven until we meet again one day.”

Beyonce opened the event, called a “celebration of life”, by singing XO, during which she said “I’m here because I love Kobe and this was one of his favourite songs”, before also performing Halo.

Basketball legends Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were in the crowd, alongside current stars including Stephen Curry, James Harden and Russell Westbrook.

Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West were also in attendance.

Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan called Kobe Bryant his “little brother” in a tearful tribute

Chicago Bulls legend Jordan, who won six NBA titles, helped Vanessa from the stage before also giving a tearful speech that referred to how often the two players were compared.

“When Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died,” said Jordan.

“Everyone always wanted to talk about the comparisons between he and I but I just wanted to talk about Kobe.

    “Rest in peace, little brother.”

“Kobe and I pushed one another to play some of the greatest basketball of all time,” said O’Neal.

“Kobe and I always maintained a deep respect and love for one another.

“Mamba, you were taken away from us way too soon, just know that we got your back, little brother.”

WNBA great Diana Taurasi, American college star Sabrina Ionescu and Bryant’s former agent and current Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka also shared their memories of Kobe and Gigi.

Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera also performed songs before the crowd watched Dear Basketball, a five-minute film based on a love letter to the sport Bryant had written in 2015 and for which he won the best short animated film Oscar in 2018.

The memorial service closed with Nat King Cole’s song Unforgettable as the crowd started chanting “Kobe, Kobe.”

  • KelniGVG team pounces on SIM box syndicate

A SIM Box syndicate operating at Community 11 in Tema in the Greater Accra Region was recently busted in a combined operation by officials of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), KelniGVG and the Ghana Police Service.

A total of 11 SIM Box equipment capable of using 352 SIM cards simultaneously were retrieved from the premises along with other illicit equipment used for the criminal activity.

It is estimated that an amount of US$1,938,816 in both revenue and taxes have been lost per month assuming each device operated at an average of 18 hours per day.

NCA, GRA, KelniGVG and the Ghana Police Service are continuing with their investigations and will provide further details in due course. The February 19, 2020 raid is the third since December 2019.

Another SIM Box operator arrested in January 2020 had been granted police enquiry bail while the operators of other SIM Box syndicate whose premises were raided and shut down in December 2019 were on the run.

The fraud management component of the common platform detected numbers used to illegally terminate international inbound calls as local calls. Further investigations in collaboration with the mobile network operators (MNOs) led to the detection of the location of the SIM Box devices.

The Electronic Communications (Amendment) Act, 2009, Act 786 established the minimum rate for international incoming voice calls at US$0.19 through the licensed international gateways.

The use of SIM Boxes to bypass the legal routes for terminating calls in Ghana, leads to loss of revenue and taxes to both the state and MNOs. It is therefore a criminal offence to operate a SIM Box for the purposes of terminating international calls in Ghana.

Offenders are liable to penalties that range from fines to terms of imprisonment. The NCA and GRA working with KelniGVG and the Ghana Police Service are committed to detecting and apprehending SIM Box fraudsters in the country

  • Dozens injured as man intentionally ploughs car into carnival crowd in Germany

A man intentionally rammed a car into a crowd at a carnival procession in the German town of Volkmarsen, injuring dozens of people including children, police said.

The suspect, a 29-year-old German citizen, was arrested but could not be immediately questioned because he was injured in the incident and being treated by doctors.

He is being investigated on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Police spokesman Henning Hinn confirmed that Monday’s crash was deliberate, adding: “There were several dozen injured, among them some seriously and sadly also children.”

Volkmarsen, a town of about 7,000 people, is in Hesse, a central German state; all carnival parades across the state were cancelled as a precaution.

However, state police said they had no indication of a threat anywhere else in Germany.

Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth said of the roughly 30 people injured, about 10 were children.

“As far as I know, there are still no indications for the motive for the deed. This is also a subject of the investigations which are now being carried out with high pressure,” said Beuth.

Seven victims were in serious condition, Frankfurt police chief Gerhard Bereswill told local media.

The incident took place on the south side of Volkmarsen, outside a supermarket.

Video footage showed a silver Mercedes station wagon with local licence plates and its hazard lights blinking on the pavement while emergency crews walked by.

The carnival is popular in parts of Germany, especially in Rhineland cities such as Cologne and Duesseldorf, where festivities peaked on “Rose Monday” (February 24) with tens of thousands attending street parades featuring comical or satirical floats.

Monday’s attack came less than a week after a far-right gunman killed at least nine people in a city called Hanau, which is also in Hesse – an assault which sent shock waves through Europe.

  • GETFund audit report not to ruin reputations – Audit Service

The Audit Service says their report on the performance of the administration of scholarships by GETFund is not to tarnish the image of anyone.

The service said the report is to help restructure the system of administration of the fund for it to meet its core mandate.

The Audit Service also stated that they may not disallow and surcharge individuals who can prove they have not benefited from the GETFund scholarships.

According to the Audit Service processes leading to disallowing and surcharging will allow the said individuals to provide and prove whether or not they have actually benefited from the GETFund scholarship.

Speaking on Citi FM after the Audit Service published a performance audit report on the administration of scholarships by GETFund from 2012 to 2018, Assistant Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Bernard Conduah said the process will allow individuals who have complained of not benefiting from the scholarship but have been listed in the report published to provide proof to that effect.

He also stated that the report is a wakeup call for MPs and public officials whose names have been cited in the report but did not benefit from it. According to Mr Conduah, this should prompt them that some people are using their names for illegal activities.

Addressing the issues of the report seeking to tarnish the names of some public officials said to have benefited from the scholarship, he said the idea of the report is not to tarnish anybody’s image but rather identify the loopholes in the administration of the fund and recommend ways of curbing it.

“What’s in the report is not meant to tarnish anyone’s image.”

  • Coronavirus: World should prepare for pandemic – WHO

The World Health Organization has said the world should do more to prepare for a possible coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO said it was too early to call the outbreak a pandemic but countries should be “in a phase of preparedness”.

A pandemic is when an infectious disease spreads easily from person to person in many parts of the world.

More cases of the virus, which causes respiratory disease Covid-19, continue to emerge, with outbreaks in South Korea, Italy and Iran causing concern.

However, most infections are in China, the original source of the virus, where 77,000 people have the disease and nearly 2,600 have died. The number of new cases there is now falling.

More than 1,200 cases have been confirmed in about 30 other countries and there have been more than 20 deaths. Italy reported three more deaths on Monday, raising the total there to six.

Worldwide stock markets saw sharp falls because of concerns about the economic impact of the virus.

China said it would postpone the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress next month, to “continue the efforts” against the coronavirus.

The body, which approves decisions made by the Communist Party, has met every year since 1978.

The proportion of infected people who die from Covid-19 appears to be between 1% and 2%, although the WHO cautions that the mortality rate is not known yet.

On Monday Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain reported their first cases, all involving people who had come from Iran. Officials in Bahrain said the patient infected there was a school bus driver, and several schools had been closed as a result.

    What does the WHO say?

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news conference on Monday that the number of new cases in recent days in Iran, Italy and South Korea was “deeply concerning” but not yet a pandemic.

“For the moment we are not witnessing the uncontained global spread of this virus and we are not witnessing large scale severe disease or deaths,” he said.

“Does this virus have pandemic potential? Absolutely, it has. Are we there yet? From our assessment, not yet.”

    What are the symptoms?

The main signs of infection are fever (high temperature) and a cough as well as shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

    What should I do?

Frequent handwashing with soap or gel, avoiding close contact with people who are ill and not touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands can help cut the risk of infection.

Catching coughs and sneezes in a tissue, binning it and washing your hands can minimize the risk of spreading disease.

  • Trump administration weighs emergency funds to combat coronavirus

The Trump administration is considering asking legislators for emergency funding to ramp up its response to the fast-spreading coronavirus, a White House spokesman and an administration source said on Monday, though they did not say how much money was needed.

“We need some funding here to make sure that we … protect all Americans, that we keep us safe,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Fox News Channel.

Asked how much funding the administration may ask Congress to approve, Gidley later told reporters at the White House that there was no announcement yet on the amount.

Politico and the Washington Post, citing unnamed individuals familiar with the planning, had reported the administration may request one billion dollars in funding from the US Congress. An administration official told Reuters News Agency the amount was still being finalised, and the request could go to legislators this week. The New York Times, citing an unnamed congressional aide, said the request could come as soon as Monday.

The official said US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was seeking an amount that some within the administration viewed as out of proportion, given the limited number of US cases and other HHS funding that has not yet been used.

The outbreak has spread beyond central China to South Korea, Iran and Italy, rattling global markets.

    Trump at odds with advisers

The United States has not seen the kind of community spread that has hit China, but health officials are preparing for such a possibility even as those Americans affected so far have been quarantined.

There have been 13 cases of people diagnosed with the virus in the US and 21 cases among Americans repatriated on evacuation flights from the virus epicentre of Wuhan, China, as well as from a cruise ship in Japan, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Representatives for the US Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment on the funding requests.

US President Donald Trump has tapped Azar to lead a taskforce coordinating the response to the outbreak that the department has declared a public health emergency.

Democrats, who control the US House of Representatives, have urged the administration to seek emergency funds after it notified Congress in recent weeks that it had already spent millions of dollars for its virus response, according to the Washington Post.

Trump has been at odds with his own White House advisers over China’s coronavirus response and has sought to downplay the effects of the virus, saying it could fade in April with warmer spring weather – something health experts said is unknown.

“We have aggressively worked to combat the spread of this virus, tried to prevent it as best we could from coming into this country,” Gidley told reporters.

The administration is also grappling with where to send Americans evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship who tested positive for the virus after backing off plans to quarantine them in a federal facility in Alabama.

In a statement on Monday, HHS cited a “rapidly evolving situation,” but said the Alabama centre was “not needed at this time” and that it was looking for alternatives.

“Any action that HHS takes, working with our federal, state and local partners, to address this public health emergency will be done in a way that protects both those infected with the virus and other citizens, as well,” HHS said.

  • Give political parties fair and level playing ground in 2020 Elections Catholic Bishops to EC

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has urged the Electoral Commission of Ghana to give all political parties a fair and level playing ground to contest the upcoming elections.

The Bishops are also appealing to all political parties and their members to support and respect the independence and verdicts of the Electoral Commission.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the President of the Bishops Conference, Most Reverend Philip Naameh to begin 2020 Lenten Season.

The Lenten season is on the Theme: “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled with God” (2 Cor 5:20).

The Bishops encouraged all the stakeholders to continue to use the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) sessions to engage the EC on their grievances.

They call on all Christians of voting age to exercise their civic responsibilities in the forthcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections. “Following the footsteps of Jesus who did not shun his civil duties, all Christians should actively participate in the elections. We need to exercise our franchise conscientiously during the elections to secure a better country for tomorrow. We need to eschew the vote-buying syndrome and vote according to our conscience.

6.1 We appeal to the President of the Republic of Ghana and the security agencies to provide the necessary and conducive environment devoid of fear, intimidation, and hooliganism. When people are not sure of their safety, they will not risk their lives to vote. Every human life is sacrosanct and needs to be protected. All Ghanaians must work hard to uphold the sanctity of human life before, during and after the forthcoming elections.”

The statement said,” The security agencies should be on top of the situation by being tactful and practical to prevent electoral insecurity.”

It said “We call on the Electoral Commission (EC) to remain an unbiased umpire to restore confidence in the electoral system. It should not be the case of “he who pays the piper calls the tune”.”

“It is urged to conduct free, fair and transparent elections.

Digital technologies have added zest to the ability of people to communicate. At this age, everybody is a journalist. We urge all Ghanaians to use social media, the internet, mobile phones, etc., in a more positive and better way. These devices are not to be used to fuel hate and violent speeches. Violence is the antithesis of peace and it prides itself on the sword. Jesus tells us: “for all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matt 26:52). Today, the sword can take the form of multiple registrations, multiple voting, vigilantism, “macho” men who intimidate and steal ballot boxes, using the digital media to write and propagate damaging things. As we go to the polls this year, let all work harder than ever to shelve our swords of hatred, anger, bitterness, quarrels, and killings, and reach out to each other in peace. It should be noted that the violent show of passion obstructs peace and makes harmony a difficult thing to achieve.”

  • Coronavirus: Inter Milan’s Europa clash without fans

Inter Milan’s Europa League match against Ludogorets will be played behind closed doors over coronavirus fears – while more Serie A fixtures could be set for the same fate.

Bulgarian side Ludogorets had written to UEFA to request information about the coronavirus situation, with the second leg scheduled for Thursday at San Siro Stadium, which will now be played without fans in attendance.

The Italian government, meanwhile, is moving towards having Serie A matches played behind closed doors in affected areas as authorities try to contain the spreading coronavirus that has made northern Italy the focal point of the outbreak in Europe.

Serie A president Paolo Dal Pinto sent a letter to the government on Monday asking if games can played without fans in attendance, noting there is little time for make-up dates considering all elite football competitions must be completed by May 24 because of the upcoming European Championships.

Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora also proposed the closed-door plan to Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte.Playing all sports behind closed doors for the next week could be possible, because then fans can more easily stay at home, said Maurizio Casasco, the president of the Italian federation for sports physicians.

But the clubs have to be in agreement, and there’s more than just football in Italy.

The Italian national team are due to hold a training camp at their national training base Coverciano near Florence ahead of friendlies against England at Wembley and Germany at Max-Morlock-Stadion in Nuremberg next month.

Meanwhile, four Serie A games scheduled for the previous round on Sunday were postponed, including Inter Milan’s game against Sampdoria at the San Siro.

Also on Monday, the first board meeting for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics was changed to a video conference instead of being held in Milan.

Members of the newly created board of directors for the 2026 Games called in from their respective offices in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, the areas hardest hit by the virus, the Italian Olympic Committee said.

Juventus, based in Turin, are due to to host Inter next Sunday, in a match which sees the return of former coach Antonio Conte. Other games scheduled for northern Italy next weekend include Udinese vs Fiorentina on Saturday and AC Milan vs Genoa on Sunday.

French club Lyon were in contact with UEFA and French authorities over concern about the 2,500-3,000 Juventus fans travelling over the border to a Champions League game in the French city on Wednesday.

Juventus shares fell 11 per cent on the Milan stock exchange in early trading on Monday, forcing a suspension in trading.

Juventus also announced their museum at the Allianz Stadium would remain closed until at least Saturday. Stadium tours were also suspended.

Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malag said on Sunday that playing games behind closed doors was problematic. However, it may be the only solution for now.

With fewer concerns in southern Italy, Napoli’s Champions League match against Barcelona on Tuesday is set to be played as planned.

Serie C cancelled all games in its A and B leagues, which have teams in the north. Volleyball and rugby games were also suspended nationwide through next weekend.

Civil protection officials said more than 200 people had tested positive for the virus in Italy and five people had died, including two elderly men in northern Lombardy. It is the highest number of cases outside Asia.

Officials still had not pinpointed the origin of Italy’s outbreak and were struggling to contain the number of cases, which by Monday had spread to a half-dozen of regions and prompted Austria to temporarily halt rail traffic across its border with Italy.

  • Malaysia’s PM hands in shock resignation

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad submitted his resignation to the country’s king on Monday, his office announced, a shock move that could plunge the country into political crisis.

The surprise announcement comes amid speculation that 94-year-old Mahathir was attempting to form a new ruling coalition that would exclude his promised successor Anwar Ibrahim.

It is not clear who will be the next Prime Minister or whether general elections will be held.

Mahathir’s party, the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) announced Monday it would be dropping out of the ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan in support of the prime minister.

“All members of the House of Representatives of the party are also out of Pakatan Harapan. All of them have signed the Oath to continue to support and trust Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the Prime Minister of Malaysia,” according to a statement from Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin.

Deepening the political turmoil, Malaysia’s Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin were both fired from Anwar’s People’s Justice Party earlier Monday.

Nine other lawmakers declared their allegiance to the ousted pair and left the party as well, according to a statement from the lawmakers. The 11 lawmakers also announced that they are forming an independent block in parliament.

It follows meetings over the weekend between lawmakers of the ruling coalition and members of the former ruling party United Malays National Organization (UMNO), over alleged plans to form a new government, according to local news reports.

In response, Anwar called out “traitors” within his own party and accused members of Mahathir’s party of plotting a change in the current ruling coalition.

“We know there are attempts to bring down PH and form a new government,” Anwar said.

Speaking at his party headquarters Monday, Anwar said he had met with the Prime Minister and told him that, “this treachery could be dealt with together.”

“Those from my party and outside are using his name. He reiterated what he said to me earlier. He had no part in it. He made it very clear in no way would he work with those in the past regime,” Anwar said.

  • WHO raises alarm as virus spreads in parts of Middle East, Europe

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the coronavirus outbreak has not reached the level of a pandemic but warned countries to step up preparations to deal with such a scenario, as new deaths and infections were reported in the Middle East and Europe.

While the global health agency is very concerned about the spread of the virus within countries such as South Korea, Iran and Italy, its chief said on Monday the infections in China – the country where it originated late last year – have been declining since early February, which proved that the virus can be contained.

“For the moment, we are not witnessing the uncontained global spread of this coronavirus, and we are not witnessing large-scale severe disease or death,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva.

He added, however, that countries should be “doing everything we can to prepare for a potential pandemic.

“What we see are epidemics in different parts of the world affecting countries in different ways and requiring a tailored response.”

The WHO chief’s comments came as officials in Europe and the Middle East scramble to limit the spread of the outbreak and stock markets dipped on fears of a global slowdown due to the spread of the virus, officially known as COVID-19.

In Italy, where there have been more than 200 infections and seven deaths, authorities have set up roadblocks, called off football matches, sealed off the worst-affected towns and banned public gatherings across a wide area.

Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Jamjoom, reporting from central Milan in northern Italy, said there appeared to be a sense of alarm but not panic.

“People are taking precautions … but they are still out and about,” he said. “All that being said though, people are concerned because there were just a handful of cases last week and in the past few days they have spiked.”

In Iran, the government said 12 people had died nationwide, while five neighbouring countries – Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Afghanistan – reported their first cases of the virus, with those infected all having links to Iran. A WHO team is due to arrive in Iran on Tuesday.

South Korea, meanwhile, reported 231 new cases, taking its total to 833. Many are in its fourth-largest city, Daegu, which became more isolated with Asiana Airlines and Korean Air suspending flights there until next month. Mongolia earlier announced it would not allow flights from South Korea to land.

    ‘World in Wuhan’s debt’

Officially known as COVID-19, the virus has so spread to almost 30 countries and killed about two dozen people. In China, it has infected some 77,000 people and killed more than 2,500, most of them in the central province of Hubei.

Beijing postponed the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress – due to start on March 5 – for the first time in decades due to the coronavirus outbreak, state broadcaster CCTV said on Monday.

“So far, no new date has been set,” Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu, reporting from Beijing, said.

“But analysts say when the meeting is rescheduled, that will be the biggest indicator that the country has finally won its so-called war against the coronavirus outbreak.”

Yu said 24 of China’s 31 provinces reported no new cases in the past 24 hours, while a visiting WHO team noted that a turning point had been reached in Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak and the capital of Hubei.

“They’re at a point now where the number of cured people coming out of hospitals each day is much more than the sick going in,” Bruce Aylward, head of the WHO delegation in China, said in Beijing.

He added that China’s actions, especially in Wuhan, had probably prevented hundreds of thousands of cases and urged the rest of the world to learn the lesson of acting fast.

“The world is in your debt,” Aylward said, referring to the people of Wuhan. “The people of that city have gone through an extraordinary period and they’re still going through it.”

Meanwhile, the virus is taking an increasingly heavy toll on the global economy, with many factories in China closed or subdued due to the quarantines.

The surge of cases outside mainland China triggered sharp falls in global share markets as investors fled to safe havens. European share markets suffered their biggest slump since mid-2016, gold soared to a seven-year high, oil tumbled nearly 5 percent and the Korean won fell to its lowest level since August.

Wall Street dived around 3 percent after it opened as the ugly sell-off spread. Italian shares tumbled nearly 5 percent.

The International Monetary Fund warned on Sunday that the epidemic was putting a “fragile” global economic recovery at risk, while the White House said the shutdowns in China will have an impact on the United States.
