Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus has been sued by one Richard Nana Amoako for failing to pay for a $3,000.00 family hub refrigerator he (A Plus) purchased on credit from him (Richard) last year.

According to details of the writ of summons issued by the Tema District Magistrate Court sighted by TheBBCghana.com, attempts by the plaintiff to get A-Plus to honour his promise of paying off the debt has proved futile over the last seven months.

  • Coronavirus: South Korea confirms huge rise in cases

South Korea says the number of new coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in one day.

Officials said on Saturday that 229 new cases had been confirmed since Friday, raising the total to 433.

Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip said the outbreak had entered “a serious new phase”.

Many of the new cases are linked to a hospital and to a religious group near the south-eastern city of Daegu, authorities have said.

Two patients in South Korea have died so far and there are fears the number will rise.

Daegu and nearby Cheongdo – where the hospital is situated – have been declared “special care zones” and the streets of Daegu are reported to be largely abandoned.

South Korea has now reported the largest number of confirmed infections outside China – 76,288 cases including 2,345 deaths – and the outbreak on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan which has seen more than 600 cases.

The latest developments came as Chinese health authorities reported a decrease in the rate of deaths and new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has expressed concern at the number of new cases with no clear link to China or other confirmed cases.

He said the greatest concern now was countries with weaker health systems, particularly in Africa.

Outside China, more than 1,200 cases of the virus have been confirmed in 26 countries and there have been at least eight deaths, the WHO says.

    In other developments:

    • An evacuation flight carrying 32 British and other European cruise ship passengers from Japan has landed in England
    • Italy reported its second death from the virus – a woman living in the northern region of Lombardy – a day after a 78-year-old man became the first person in Italy to die from the new coronavirus.
    • Iran reported its fifth death from the disease. The outbreak is centred on the holy city of Qom but officials warned that the virus may already have spread to “all cities in Iran”

The new virus, which originated last year in Hubei province in China, causes a respiratory disease called Covid-19.

    What happened in South Korea?

Medical officials first announced 142 new cases on Saturday and then hours later increased the number by 87.

In a statement, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said that of the 229 new cases, 95 were related to Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo. There are now 114 confirmed cases at the hospital – nine staff and 102 patients – it added.

Mr Kim said most of those diagnosed had been inpatients for mental health issues. He said some cases showed “no confirmed epidemiological connections”, meaning it was not clear how they had contracted the virus, he added.

it was not clear how they had contracted the virus, he added.

People in Daegu have voiced concern over the spread of the virus

A 63-year-old man died at the hospital on Wednesday and another patient died on Friday in Busan after being transferred from Daenam Hospital, Yonhap news agency reports.

KCDC said 62 new cases – 231 in total – were connected to a Christian sect in Daegu called the Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

Authorities have highlighted that a large number of sect followers attended the funeral of the founder’s brother from 31 January to 2 February.

    Graph comparing outbreaks

The agency said it had placed 9,336 Shincheonji members in self-quarantine and that, of those, more than 500 were being tested for the coronavirus.

The sect, which has been accused of being a cult, said it had now shut down its Daegu branch and that services in other regions would be held online or individually at home.

At a news briefing, Mr Kim expressed optimism that the outbreak could be confined to the region around Daegu.

“Although we are beginning to see some more cases nationwide, infections are still sporadic outside of the special management zone of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province,” he told reporters.

    What has the WHO said?

In a briefing to the African Union on Saturday, Dr Tedros said the WHO was working with African governments to train thousands of health workers and to provide equipment to identify and treat infected people.

“Our biggest concern continues to be the potential for Covid-19 to spread in countries with weaker health systems,” he said. “We are working hard to prepare countries in Africa for the potential arrival of the virus.”

Dr Tedros said some countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, were using experience gained from testing for the Ebola virus to test for the new coronavirus.

“This is a great example of how investing in health systems can pay dividends for health security,” he said.

A team of experts from the WHO is due to arrive in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak first emerged, on Saturday.

    What’s happening elsewhere?

Passengers of the Diamond Princess who have tested negative continue to disembark the ship in Yokohama after more than 14 days quarantined on board.

However, 18 American evacuees from the ship tested positive after arriving in the US, officials said. More than 300 other US nationals have arrived back in the US after disembarking.

Coronavirus: Quarantined passengers released from Japan ship

More than 150 Australian passengers have been evacuated from the ship and have already arrived in Darwin, where they will begin two more weeks of quarantine.

Australian officials said on Friday that six people had reported feeling unwell on arrival in Darwin and were immediately tested. Two of those people tested positive despite having received negative tests before leaving Japan.

The first batch of people from Hong Kong have also flown back to the city, where they will similarly be quarantined.

  • New US visa rules set off ‘panic wave’ in immigrant communities

After nearly a dozen years moving through the United States visa system, Sai Kyaw’s brother and sister and their families were at the finish line: a final interview before they could leave Myanmar to join him in Massachusetts and work at his restaurant.

Then a dramatic turn in US immigration policy halted their plans. The interview was postponed, and it is not clear when, or whether, it will be rescheduled.

“It’s terrible,” Kyaw said. “There’s nothing we can really do except pray. They’ve been waiting 12 years. If they have to wait another 12 years, they will.”

His is just one of many stories of confusion, sorrow and outrage spreading across some immigrant communities after the announcement of a Trump administration policy that is expected to all but shut down family-based immigration from Myanmar, also known as Burma, as well as Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan and Eritrea.

The policy also restricts visas from Sudan and Tanzania.

“There’s a panic wave going through the community,” said Grace Mobosi-Enwensi, president of the Minnesota Institute for Nigerian Development, a nonprofit group.

In signing a proclamation last month that takes effect on Friday, President Donald Trump said those countries failed to meet minimum security standards. It was his latest crackdown on his signature issue of immigration.

Calls about the restrictions have flooded legal advocacy groups and lawyers’ offices. A Boston-area Burmese church is trying to intervene to help congregants. The United African Organization has held legal clinics in Chicago to walk people through their options.

The rules are certain to face legal challenges, but in the meantime, activists have organised around #MuslimBan and #AfricaBan on social media and ramped up lobbying efforts to press Congress to pass the No Ban Act, which would limit the president’s ability to restrict entry to the US.

    No Ban Act

Roughly 10,000 people received immigration-based visas from Nigeria, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar in the 2018 fiscal year, according to federal data analysed by the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute. More than half were from Nigeria, the most populous African nation.

The ripple of emotion has been felt strongest among America’s roughly 380,000 Nigerian immigrants and their children. They are one of the most educated immigrant groups. More than 60 percent of people with Nigerian ancestry who are at least 25 have a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is more than twice the general US population rate of 29 percent, according to 2017 census data.

Tope Aladele, who is seeking a visa for his wife in Nigeria, has faint hope that she will be able to come to the US.

“I thought this year I could at least celebrate Christmas with her,” said Aladele, a US citizen who works as a nursing assistant in the Chicago area. “I’m just hoping and praying.”

Citizenship and Immigration Services officials declined to comment on the concerns of affected families, deferring to the Department of Homeland Security. Agency officials did not respond to emails seeking comment.

Unlike previous travel bans, the new rules are narrower. They stop immigrant visas from Nigeria, Eritrea, Myanmar and Kyrgystan, covering people who want to live in the US permanently and are sponsored by family members or employers. They also eliminate participation in a visa lottery programme in which a computer randomly selects up to 55,000 people for visas from underrepresented countries. Sudan and Tanzania will also be barred from the lottery.

The ban does not affect immigrants travelling to the US for a temporary stay, including tourists and students, or immigrants already in the US. There are also exceptions, including dual citizenship holders.

In Chicago, the United African Organization hosted dozens of people at legal clinics. Many had questions about their spouses and children. One was Osemeh Otoboh, 46, a Nigerian citizen with a green card who has applied for two of his teenage children from a previous marriage to come to the US.

Though their visas were recently approved, the suburban Chicago man married to a US citizen was worried. His children live in Lagos, and he wants them to pursue an education in the US.

“I don’t even know how to explain it to them,” Otoboh said of the restrictions.

Experts have questioned the administration’s national security reasoning since there are no restrictions on tourist or student visas, which can take less time and vetting to acquire. Officials in at least one country, Nigeria, have said they are working to address security concerns, such as information sharing.

Activists said the restrictions amount to another travel ban like the one that was widely decried as targeting Muslims. The Supreme Court upheld that ban as lawful in 2018. It restricted travel from several Muslim-majority countries including Iran, Somalia and Syria.

Sudan and Kyrgyzstan are also majority-Muslim countries. Nigeria, the world’s seventh-most populous nation, has a large Muslim population too.

“It’s a continuation of this administration’s racist and xenophobic immigration framework that they use,” said Mustafa Jumale, a policy manager for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.

    Travel ban
People protest outside of the US Supreme Court after President Trump’s travel ban was upheld by the Supreme Court in Washington, DC

Muslim Advocates, along with other civil rights organisations in the US, said in a statement issued on Thursday that more than 25 percent of African would be barred from entering the US.

“America is a nation where people of all races and religions are entitled to equal protection under the law, yet the expanded Muslim Ban is another attack on the rights, the dignity and the identity of Black communities,” the group said in a statement. “[M]ore Black families will needlessly suffer from a policy with no legitimate justification,” according to the statement.

Some churches have also sprung into action.

At the Overseas Burmese Christian Fellowship in Boston, Pastor Clifford Maung says he has relayed the concerns of two families in his congregation to national Baptist church leaders and is prepared to appeal to the US government on their behalf.

“You hope for the best. We grew up under a similar situation in Burma with an oppressive government so this is something we are used to,” he said. “But it shouldn’t happen in America.”

Maung says one of those affected is his cousin, whose wife has already been approved for a visa and is awaiting medical clearance, which was supposed to come as soon as this week.

Another affected family is that of S’Tha Sein, who arrived with his wife and youngest daughter in December. The 53-year-old Sein says his eldest daughter was also approved for a visa but tested positive for tuberculosis and was not allowed to travel with them.

The 21-year-old college student is slated to be reevaluated next month after receiving treatment, but Sein says the new restrictions throw uncertainty into the prolonged immigration process, which the family began in 2006.

“We’ve been praying that this law will change,” Sein said after attending church services this past Sunday with his family, siblings and elderly parents. “We just want to be able to live together.”

  • Tyson Fury shocks Deontay Wilder to win WBC title

Tyson Fury has defeated Deontay Wilder to win the WBC, vacant The Ring heavyweight title and also retaining the lineal heavyweight belt.

Both boxers had their first fight in December 2018 which ended on a split draw. The rematch saw Wilder suffer the first loss in his career so far.

Fury showed class as he dominated Wilder in Las Vegas and knocked him down twice before the towel was thrown in from Wilder’s camp in the seventh round.

A clear punch in the opening round gave Fury the advantage as it made Wilder back away from him more often while he charged aggressively as he had promised to do.

The third round saw Wilder get an uppercut and jab from Fury which made them tie up. It was followed by a punch that landed him on the ground.

He survived the round but was on shaky legs all through.

Wilder was knocked down again on the fifth round as he was still yet to gain himself from the shock of the third round.

Fury continued to dominate until Wilder’s camp threw in the towel in the seventh round to end the match.

  • Burkina Faso violence forces 4,000 people from their homes daily

More than 4,000 people are being forced to flee their homes daily in Burkina Faso as attacks on civilians by armed groups increase in number and frequency, the United Nations has warned.

In a statement on Friday, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said more than 700,000 people were displaced in the past 12 months, with an estimated 150,000 of them being uprooted in the last three weeks alone.

“People fleeing the violence report attacks on their villages by militant groups, killing, raping, pillaging. Terrified of these attacks, residents have left everything behind to find safety,” the agency said.

Most of the displaced people were now living in host communities, but the UNHCR was finding it difficult to assist them because access was “problematic” in some regions due to the insecure situation, spokesman Andrej Mahecic told a news briefing.

Mahecic stressed that the situation in the Sahel region needs more attention, describing it as a “crisis” that is “poorly known and poorly understood”.

    Rise in violence

Burkina Faso borders Mali to the northwest and Niger to the east, with all three Sahelian countries hit by a swiftly deteriorating security situation.

Last month, the UN envoy for West Africa told the Security Council that attacks have increased fivefold in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger since 2016, with more than 4,000 deaths reported in 2019.

Many parts of the Sahel that have seen the most fighting are severely underdeveloped. The multiple armed groups operating in the region, a semi-arid swathe of land beneath the Sahara, have exploited poverty as well as religious and ethnic divisions for recruitment. Meanwhile, the military campaigns by the ill-equipped national armies have also been marred by human rights abuses, which analysts say have pushed some civilians into the arms of fighters.

The rise in violence in the Sahel has fed a feeling of increased insecurity among locals.

The UNHCR said more than 4,400 refugees from Niger had arrived in Mali, fleeing a string of attacks in the Tillaberi and Tahoua regions, including an attack in early January.

The refugees had found safety in the Malian towns of Anderamboukane and Menaka, where they joined another 7,700 displaced Malians in the same area.

More people continue to cross the border between Niger and Mali, the agency said.

“Alarmed by the dramatic rise of forced displacement in the Sahel, UNHCR reiterates its call for the protection of civilian populations and those fleeing violence,” the statement said, adding that “humanitarians need safe access to deliver assistance.”

  • Eden Hazard suffers right ankle fracture ahead of City clash

Eden Hazard’s season could be at risk after Real Madrid announced on Sunday that he had fractured his right ankle during his team’s 1-0 La Liga defeat at Levante.

Belgium forward Hazard, whose first season at Real has been plagued by injury, will now miss Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 clash with Manchester City and the Clasico with league leaders Barcelona next weekend.

He has made just 10 La Liga appearances this season after arriving from Chelsea for 100 million euros ($109 million), scoring once and adding one assist.

Madrid did not announce a recovery time for Hazard but his latest setback will be a worry for Belgium boss Roberto Martinez ahead of Euro 2020 this summer.

On Saturday, Madrid coach Zinedine admitted that the 29-year-old’s injury “doesn’t look good” ahead of those two huge matches, which could define his side’s season.

Hazard was pictured with an ice pack around the same right foot he broke in November after being substituted in the second half of Saturday’s loss, which handed a two-point La Liga lead to Barca ahead of next week’s Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Hazard made his first start in almost three months against Celta Vigo last weekend and started again at Levante, with a view to regaining sharpness before the City showdown.

  • Eden Hazard fractures ankle again, misses UCL clash with Man City

Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard will miss Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City after fracturing his ankle.

Hazard, 29, hobbled off in the second half of Real’s La Liga 1-0 loss to Levante on Saturday.

The Belgian only returned to action last week after missing almost three months with a similar injury.

“Following tests, Hazard has been diagnosed with a fracture to his right distal fibula,” a club statement said.

“His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

The former Chelsea playmaker’s injury troubles have restricted him to 15 appearances for Real since arriving from Stamford Bridge last summer.

The injury means Hazard is also set to miss Real’s El Clasico match against Barcelona on 1 March.

The player has suffered recurring problems with his right ankle, which he broke while a Chelsea player in 2017 before sustaining what was described as a “micro-fracture” in a game for Real last November.

  • Roma want permanent Smalling, Mkhitaryan deals

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has told Sky Sports News he wants to sign on-loan duo Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to permanent deals.

Smalling has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Roma this season and revealed earlier this week he is open to extending his stay in the Italian capital beyond the end of the season.

As it stands, Smalling is scheduled to return to parent club Manchester United at the end of the season but Fonseca is desperate to hang on to the 30-year-old defender.

“Chris is a great, great man, a great, great professional,” Fonseca told Sky Sports News.

“The adaptation (to Italian football) was very easy for him. He’s a boy that everyone loves in the club because he is a great professional.

“I would like Chris to stay. We are speaking. I don’t know if it is possible because of the situation with Manchester United, but I would like so much for Chris to stay here with us because he is very important.

“He is a great player, a great man with a great attitude every day and for all of these reasons I would be very happy if Chris stays.”

On-loan Arsenal attacking midfielder Mkhitaryan, who was also team-mates with Smalling at United, has seen his temporary spell with Roma disrupted by injuries.

But he scored and contributed an assist in Roma’s 4-0 win over Lecce on Sunday, and Fonseca revealed he is also keen on signing Mkhitaryan on a permanent basis.

“Mkhi during this season got some injuries but he is returning now and he is proving his quality,” Fonseca said.

“Let’s see. He is a player with great decisions on the pitch and I would also like to keep Mkhi in our team.”

  • Togo opposition alleges ‘fake’ polling stations

A Togo opposition leader has accused authorities of setting up fake polling stations in Saturday’s presidential election to skew the result in favour of the incumbent.

Agbéyomé Kodjo made the accusation against President Faure Gnassingbé who has been in power since 2005 when he took over from his father.

The president’s office is quoted by AFP news agency as denying the accusation.

The results of the vote are expected by Friday.

Mr Kodjo, former prime minister and head of the national assembly, also accused the authorities of ballot stuffing and getting people to cast multiple votes in Mr Gnassingbé’s favour.

Troops surrounded Mr Kodjo’s home for around three hours after voting finished on Saturday.

Togo’s Security Minister, Yark Dameham, told Voice of America that Mr Kodjo’s house had been surrounded as a precaution.

“We have received reports that he is at risk of an attack on his house by unruly individuals, but I cannot tell you from which side,” he is quoted as saying.

But Mr Kodjo told the BBC that he was given no explanation and believed this was not for his protection but instead to allow time to rig the vote.

Mr Gnassingbé has led Togo’s population of eight million people since taking over following the death of his father Gnassingbé Eyadema, who ruled for 38 years.

He faces six rivals for the position of president.

Constitutional changes were approved last year allowing him to seek re-election and potentially stay in office until 2030 – an issue which sparked huge protests in 2017-18.

  • Arsenal edge Everton in five-goal cracker

Arsenal came out on top in a five-goal thriller as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s double gave them a 3-2 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Super Sunday.

In-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring for Everton after just 49 seconds with an intuitive acrobatic effort, but Eddie Nketiah levelled with just his second Premier League goal from early sub Bukayo Saka’s brilliant cross (27).

Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead with a neat finish inside the box (33), but Richarlison poked Everton level late in the half as the hosts failed to clear a set piece (45+4) in a game where defensive solidity was not the order of the day.

Arsenal took just 22 seconds to regain the lead in the second half through Aubameyang’s header (46), before Calvert-Lewin missed two fine chances late on.

The result means Arsenal leapfrog Everton into ninth, seven points off the top four with 11 to play. Everton are a point further back in 11th.

  • GETFund scholarship not only for needy students – Education Ministry PRO

Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Vincent Ekow Assafuah says the GETFund scholarship is not only for needy but brilliant students as widely believed.

He says the GETFund Act 581 which says the scholarship to be given to needy but brilliant student is not entirely the case.

He said the same Act also allows the Minister of Education in consultation with GETFund to promote education in Ghana and give scholarships to various individuals to study abroad so they use their knowledge and skills to help the nation.

“Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has not received any scholarship from GETFund since assuming office as Education Minister. However the impression that is also put out there that the GETFund act 581 says the scholarship is only given to needy but brilliant students is false. The same act subsection 2e also allows the Minister of Education in consultation with GETFundf to promote education in Ghana to give some sponsorship and scholarship to people to go to abroad and learn so they come and help the country.”

“So it was in 2014 that Dr Matthwe Opoku Prempeh was awarded a scholarship to go and study in Havard. It was a 3-week training and when you are done you need to come back and demonstrate what you learnt and so we have not been happy with the reports going round,” he spoke on the Joy Super Morning Show on February 24, 2020.

    Background

The performance audit report on the administration of scholarships by the GETFund secretariat between 2012 and 2018, named some key ministers of state, Members of Parliament, lecturers, heads of institutions and associates as well as media practitioners as beneficiaries of the GETFund scholarships, which are meant for needy but brilliant students.

Some of the names include Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, Education Minister; Sarah Adwoa Safo, procurement minister and deputy majority leader in Parliament; Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, employment and labour relations minister; and Prince Hamidu Armah, Executive Secretary of National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

  • Substitute Jesus grabs Man City win at Leicester

Substitute Gabriel Jesus’s late goal gave Manchester City a 1-0 win at Leicester to strengthen their hold on second place in the Premier League.

Latching onto former Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez’s pass after a superb run, Jesus slipped past Kasper Schmeichel (80), after the Dane had saved a Sergio Aguero penalty (62).

In the battle of third versus second, Jamie Vardy hit the post for Leicester early on after being put through one-on-one in a goalless opening period, before Aguero’s penalty miss following a Dennis Praet handball, and Jesus’ eventual winner.

The result means second-placed Manchester City are now seven points ahead of Leicester, while the Foxes are now only six points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea with 11 to play.

  • Fabulous Fernandes inspires Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes scored one and had a hand in the other two goals as Manchester United continued their recent upturn with a 3-0 Premier League victory over Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday.

January signing Fernandes capped a man-of-the-match performance in style with his first goal for the club, nonchalantly converting a penalty he had won after being fouled by Ben Foster shortly before half-time.

Troy Deeney had an equaliser ruled out by VAR following a handball by Craig Dawson, and Anthony Martial compounded the Hornets’ misery moments later with an exquisite chipped finish over Foster – his third goal in three games.

Fernandes then set up Mason Greenwood for United’s third, the teenager’s explosive finish off the underside of the bar confirming an impressive victory that moves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side up to fifth, three points off fourth, and leaves Watford a point from safety in 19th.

  • My GETFund scholarship came during Mahama’s era – Education Minister

Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh popularly known as ‘Napo’ has denied reports that he is a beneficiary of GETFund scholarship.

News reports named Dr Opoku-Prempeh among some politicians who allegedly received funding for their studies abroad.

Dr Opoku-Prempeh is listed to have received US$11,200 to study National and International Security at Harvard University and US$12,800 as tuition and living allowance.

But in a Facebook post, the Education Minister said the statement is false and calculated to cause him embarrassment and public ridicule.

“I have noted with dismay a news carried by some media, that suggests that I have as a Minister, received a scholarship from the Ghana Education Trust Fund for studies at Harvard.

“This impression is false and calculated to cause embarrassment and public ridicule. I have not received any form of sponsorship for any programme or course of study from GETFund of scholarship secretariat since becoming a Minister,” his post read.

  • Real Madrid’s form is screwed up – Zidane

Zinedine Zidane believes it’s “screwed up” Real Madrid have dropped five points in the space of a week following his side’s 1-0 loss against Levante in La Liga on Saturday.

Jose Morales’ second half finish proved to be the difference between the two sides at Ciutat de Valencia as Los Blancos made it consecutive games without victory, to slip off the pace of league leaders Barcelona in the title battle.

Having drawn 2-2 with Celta Vigo last Sunday, Madrid now face a sterner test in the shape of Premier League champions Manchester City in midweek when the pair meet in the Champions League last-16.

Zidane will now turn his eye to the visit of Pep Guardiola’s side as he looks to stoke his side’s European prowess back up to full heat, but the Frenchman admitted that, coupled with another likely lay-off for Eden Hazard, he has had better weeks.

“Hazard got hit on his bad ankle,” Zidane told his post-match press conference. “He has been hit in the ankle from the injury. We’ll have to do tests but it looks bad.

“We failed at the most important thing in football and that’s to score. It’s screwed up because in a week we’ve dropped five points, but this is football.

“We didn’t deserve that today. We went from more to less. They made their shots count. We can’t look back now.

“My players gave everything and I’m annoyed. Losing five points in two games is a bad moment for us. We’re playing for everything this week. We’ve got to keep our heads up. We’ve had good moments before and now we’re in a bad one but we’ll come out of this.”

Madrid will have the chance to wrestle back control of their title challenge when they face Barca in the second El Clasico of the current league campaign next weekend, but the absence of their Belgian playmaker is likely to sting, after he only returned against Celta from a three-month spell out of action with an ankle injury.

In a week where the Blaugrana have been granted powers to bring in an emergency transfer in the shape of former Leganes man Martin Braithwaite, Zidane will have to make do without any outside stop-gap, with Vinicius Junior likely to be asked to step in to cover if Hazard’s new problem proves as troublesome as first feared.

  • Hazard limps off ahead of Man City clash

Eden Hazard is a doubt for Real Madrid’s Champions League clash at home to Manchester City on Wednesday after limping off during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Levante.

The Belgian star was playing in only his second match since returning from an ankle injury, which kept him out of action for almost three months.

“I think it’s a knock to the same area where he suffered his last injury and it does not look good,” Real head coach Zinedine Zidane told reporters.

There is also a question mark surrounding the fitness of Gareth Bale, who missed the defeat to Levante due to an illness.

Real’s best chance against Levante fell to Hazard, who scuffed the ball when he had a clear sight of goal early in the second half. He limped off shortly afterwards and was replaced by Vinicius Junior.

Levante forward Jose Luis Morales won the game with an unstoppable strike in the 79th minute.

Hazard’s injury comes at the beginning of a pivotal week in Real’s season.

They host Man City at the Bernabeu on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Barcelona then travel to the Bernabeu on Saturday for El Clasico.

Real’s first defeat in the league since October saw them fall to second place in La Liga on 53 points after 25 games.

  • Lady captured on GETFUND scholarship says she didnt receive £22K allocated to her

Hajia Ramana Shareef, a Ghanaian lady who was captured by the audit of the Ghana Education Trust fund to have received a total of £22,000 for her United Kingdom education in 2013 did not actually receive a dime, MyNewsGH.com has confirmed.

According to her, although she applied and got an award letter, the fees was never paid which made it impossible for her a secure the admission and to also get a visa forcing her to defer her course twice before she finally cancelled it.

“I got admission to read in 2013 to study MSc Communication for Innovation and Development which was to be a starting point for my PhD dream. I applied for a scholarship at GETFUND, I got award letter but the fees was never paid. I had to defer twice and finally cancelled because of the non-payment of the fees which made it difficult to get a student visa to the UK” she wrote.

“Meanwhile from the look of things, the fees was approved for payment darling …someone thought he/she played a fast one but alas! reckoning is here… we will pursue the fellow to answer to this country” a friend of hers added.

Ms Shareef drew attention to the possible corruption with another Facebook post:

“So this country called Ghana, why at all are we so wicked to ourselves.

You put my name on a list of scholarship beneficiaries, which you never paid! So who took the money?

I am so angry right now. Samson Anyenini, please I need to talk to you urgently.”

Her revelation comes after a performance audit report of the Auditor-General on the administration of scholarships by GETFund revealed that several allegedly undeserving people were given the opportunity at the expense of those most deserving.

Some of the names include now Education Minister Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, Procurement Minister and Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo as well as the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Prince Hamidu Armah.

The Education Minister is listed as studying National and International Security at Harvard University, receiving $12,800 for living expenses and $11,200 as tuition fees.

Procurement Minister Sarah Adwoa Safo is also listed studying at the Harvard Kennedy School enjoying $12,800 in allowances with $17,004 in tuition fees.

Dr. Armah is studying Philosophy in Education at the University of Aberdeen, which comes with a benefit of £38,400 for living expense in addition to £33,000 for tuition fees.

  • Fury will beat Wilder – Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua has backed Tyson Fury to defeat Deontay Wilder, insisting his fellow Brit can “hurt or out-box” the American.

Fury will challenge Wilder for the WBC heavyweight championship on February 22 in Las Vegas, before Joshua is expected to defend the IBF, WBA and WBO titles against Kubrat Pulev with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the likeliest venue.

Asked about his rivals’ rematch, Joshua exclusively told Sky Sports: “Wilder coming through is better because [a fight with me] is what people have been eagerly anticipating.

“But I think Fury can win. For Wilder to win he has to knock Fury completely out, and he couldn’t do that the first time.

“For Fury to win, he can hurt Wilder or out-box him. Fury has more to his arsenal so that’s why I’m leaning to him.

“Tyson Fury can punch a bit. He’s underestimated with his punching power which makes him dangerous. If you underestimate someone it makes them dangerous because you don’t respect them until you get hit.

“Fury is a really good boxer, to a certain degree, so he has the upper hand. Wilder isn’t the best of boxers but he has a right hand – if you can avoid that, you have the beating of him.

“Good luck to Fury – it would be great to have two heavyweight champions here in England.”

Joshua insisted he still wants to crown an undisputed champion in 2020: “I’m still clawing after the last belt that’s out there. I know I’ll get my hands on it eventually.”

He said about becoming a two-time champion: “I don’t want to do what Andy Ruiz Jr did, and lose it straight away. I want to hold it for a number of years.

“Trust me, a different beast has been awoken.”

Joshua had previously claimed he could make a “curveball offer” to fight the winner of Wilder and Fury’s rematch, tempting them away from a third fight with each other.

Promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports on Wednesday a deal would be easier to make with Fury than with Wilder.

“Wilder said he has no interest in Joshua, and Joshua is irrelevant. That is baffling,” Hearn said.

“That’s why I want Fury to win because I know he’s up for it! One phone call with me, [Fury’s US-based promoter] Bob Arum and [Fury’s management] MTK.

“AJ wants to fight Fury, Fury wants to fight AJ. It’s a two-minute call with MTK and Bob Arum, done deal.

“But I’m not sure who will win [Wilder vs Fury 2]. The comments worry me that we’re in the same position.

“The winner of that fight will be under so much pressure to fight Joshua that, this time, it will be unavoidable.

“The curveball is in terms of; those guys are preparing for their [third fight] and we have an opportunity in place that we can present to the winner to move them away from [a third fight],” Hearn explained.

“If the loser wants [a third fight] then we’re tied.”

Wilder and Fury battled to a draw when they first met in December 2018.

Meanwhile, Oleksandr Usyk is still expected to face Derek Chisora but later than planned.

Hearn said about Usyk: “He started camp for March 28 but his elbow was still a bit sore from his last fight. His physios and doctors said he was better off delaying it by four weeks.

“They wanted to fight at the end of April but we couldn’t get a venue so we move Usyk vs Chisora to the end of May. They didn’t want to arrange a fight without being 100 percent. It will take place this summer, virtually guaranteed, we are just finalising the venue.

“Same as Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin – done deal.”

  • Chloroquine cures coronavirus?

It is emerging that chloroquine has the efficacy to thwart the viral agent that causes the coronavirus disease.

A professor of Epidemiology at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho in the Volta Region, said he is gathering that the popular drug for the cure of malaria, Chloroquine, has been certified as having capabilities to cure coronavirus.

It is not confirmed, nonetheless, he added.

Professor Fred Binka made this known while sharing his thoughts on the preparedness of Ghana in case of an outbreak of the deadly disease, on The Key Points on TV3/3FM on Saturday, February 22.

The outbreak, which started in Chinese province of Hubei, has already claimed over 2,000 lives with over 72,000 persons infected.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is said to have summoned top virologists to find a cure to the epidemic within the shortest possible time.

“In another three weeks, there will be a number of tests,” Prof Binka said, but indicated that chloroquine has so far been mentioned as a cure.

Already, antiretroviral drugs for Ebola and HIV-AIDS are also being tested for the same function in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

Ghana has heightened surveillance in the face of the epidemic as about 300 Ghanaian students are said to be at the epicentre, Wuhan.

The former Vice Chancellor of UHAS urged the government to take immediate steps to get Ghanaian students in China back home as the Chinese will give priority to their own in the peak of the outbreak.

He said the leaders should consider the students as their relations and go to their rescue.

  • I should stop talking about the nonsense in this country because I owe a fridge! – A Plus strikes

Founder and leader of The People’s Project (TPP), Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has brushed aside a lawsuit of failure on his part to pay for a fridge he purchased on credit.

Per details of the writ summons sighted by Ghanaguardian.com, one Richard Nana Amoako is praying the Tema Magistrate Court to get A Plus to pay the $3,000.00 family hub refrigerator he bought from him some 7 months ago.

In the writ, the plaintiff also asked the court to compel the ‘loudmouth’ political activist to settle him the interest of the said amount, as according to him, all attempts to get A Plus to honour his promises of paying the debt has proved futile.

However, reacting to the suit on his Facebook page, A Plus said the issue that will break him is yet to be manufactured.

According to him, he currently owes a lot of companies in the country, and that long before his fault-finders started to crush him down with this fight, he had prepared for all their strategies.

“You have no idea the guy you are dealing with. I have prepared very well for all your strategies before starting this fight. I have long developed my tough skin. Nothing breaks me. Kwame A Plus doesn’t crack”, he wrote in portions of his lengthy write-up.

  • NBSSI and Cocoa Life empowers youth in cocoa communities

The National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), in collaboration with Mondelez International, has trained 40 youth in cocoa-growing communities in alternative livelihood sources.

The youth, from the Suhum and Lower-West Akyem districts, were trained to produce shower gel and body cream from cocoa husks to complement their sources of livelihood under the Cocoa Life Project of Mondalez International.

This came to light when the beneficiaries were presented with start-up kits including creaming machines, mixing bowls and packaging containers.

They were also given ingredients for production such as cocoa butter perfumes, preservatives, potash acid, petroleum jelly and glycerine.

  • We didnt receive GETFund scholarships under Akufo-Addo’s govt Napo, NaCCA boss

The Minister of Education Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) Dr. Prince Armah, have denied receiving scholarships to pursue further studies under the current government.

Ghanaians are incensed on social media following an audit report that Prempeh and Dr. Armah including other government appointees were granted scholarships by GETFund to support their education.

Reacting to the news, GETFund clarified that the officials were given the scholarship years before the current Akufo-Addo administration, adding the Act which sets up the Fund “is not limited to needy but brilliant students.”

“The Fund may, per its mandate, also provide support for such other educational activities and programmes to serve strategic national interests.

“The above having been served, it is worthy of note that the aforementioned persons have not been awarded scholarships by the Fund under the current administration,” the GETFund statement read.

The Education Minister and the NaCCA boss have both reacted to the various media reports below:

I HAVE NOTED WITH DISAPPOINTMENT A NEWS STORY CARRIED IN SOME SECTIONS OF THE MEDIA, NOTABLY MYJOYONLINE.COM AND ECHOED ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT I ABUSED MY POSITION AS A GOVERNMENT APPOINTEE TO PROCURE A SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE GHANA EDUCATION TRUST FUND FOR STUDIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

FIRST OF ALL, HAD ANY OF THESE MEDIA HOUSES ATTEMPTED THE BAREST DUE DILIGENCE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO A CHECK ON MY PUBLICLY AVAILABLE RECORDS, THEY WOULD HAVE NOTICED THAT MY STUDIES AT THE ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM PREDATED MY ENTRY INTO PUBLIC SERVICE BY AT LEAST THREE YEARS.

HOWEVER, FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT, LET THE FOLLOWING BE NOTED.

    1. That I am indeed a proud and grateful recipient of a Ghana Education Trust Fund scholarship.

    2. That I applied for and won the scholarship in 2012 to study for a doctorate in Mathematics Education at the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom in 2012

    3. That not only was this scholarship deserved, it was validated, if that were needed, by several awards and grants awarded by various institutions in the United Kingdom during my period of study

    4. That in fulfilment of the promise I made, I immediately returned to Ghana after my studies, despite the opportunity and ability to remain in the UK to take up more lucrative appointments.

    5. That I believe that the scholarship scheme we have is best used to support needy students, as I was then, in order to give them a chance to contribute to the task of nation-building, as I have done every day since my studies.

IN CONCLUSION, I URGE THE PUBLIC TO DISREGARD THIS PALPABLY FALSE STORY THAT IS DRIVEN PURELY BY THE WORST POLITICAL INSTINCTS THAT WE MUST WORK TO BANISH FROM MY NATION, WHILE WE ACTIVELY WORK TO EXPAND OPPORTUNITY AND BRIDGE THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INEQUALITIES IN OUR NATION, A TASK I AM FULLY COMMITTED TO IN MY DUTIES AT THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT.

  • Women entrepreneurs with disability benefit from Presidential Empowerment Fund

A total of 850 women entrepreneurs with disability across the country, have benefitted from the “Presidential Empowerment for Women Entrepreneurs with Disability Fund,” to secure their livelihood, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has announced.

The GHC5 million Fund, was established by the government in April, last year, with the aim of providing financial support to 1,000 women entrepreneurs with disability within two years to either establish or scale-up their businesses.

The President was delivering his fourth “State of the Nation Address”, to Parliament on Thursday.

He said 50 percent of the money given to the beneficiaries was a grant with the remaining 50 percent attracting zero interest.

This would enable them to expand their businesses to create direct jobs and many more indirect jobs for the people.

President Akufo-Addo said the establishment of the Fund was not only delivery of their manifesto commitment, but also a fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (5, 8, and 10) – promoting economic inclusion of women and harnessing their talents and capabilities to foster national growth.

The government, he said, had begun the process of amending the Disability Act (Act 715), to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability and expressed optimism that this would be passed by Parliament before the end of the year.

  • GETFund denies awarding scholarships to Ministers, MPs

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has denied awarding scholarships meant for brilliant but needy students to some ministers, government appointees as well as Members of Parliament (MP).

According to GETFund, in a statement cited by GhanaWeb, the scholarship fund is not limited to brilliant but needy students.

“We wish to categorically state that the award of scholarships by GETFund under the GETFund Act 2000, Act 581, is not limited to needy but brilliant students. The Fund may, per its mandate, also provide support for such other educational activities and programmes to serve strategic national interests,” the statement read.

But critics are worried that in a society where party hacks have grabbed everything from tricycles to excavators, with the poor having limited opportunities with serious health challenges, the national decline in moral leadership should reach this level, especially within the Ministry of Education which administers policies for children to be trained in citizenship and morality.

  • Bono Region: NPP suspends executive member, two others over social media insults

The Bono Regional Branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended one of its executives and two other members for “misconducting” themselves on some social media platforms of the party.

The three, Suleman Ibrahim, Abdul Hafiz and Mumuni Yeskuru are said to have engaged in insults on the various platforms of the party and have been slapped with a six-month suspension.

A letter signed by the Regional Secretary of the Party, Kofi Ofosu Boateng, said, “Your suspension comes as a result of your misconduct on the various social media platforms.”

The party has since directed the regional youth wing of the party to replace Mumuni Yeskuru, who until the punishment, was the Deputy TESCON Coordinator for the party in the region.

He had previously served as President of TESCON at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

Suleman Ibrahim is a former TESCON President for the Tanoso Community Health Nursing School in the Ahafo Region.

Abdul Hafiz, on the other hand, is a Social Media Communicator affiliated to the party.

  • Men who kneel to propose are fools – Pete Edochie

Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has kicked against the idea of Nigerian men getting down on their knees to ask women to marry them.

In a video circulated on social media on Thursday, the 72-year-old actor could be heard saying, “Any young man who gets on his knees to propose to a girl, is not just an idiot, he’s a bloody fool, a compound buffoon”.

The revered actor said in the video that the act is a replication of the foreign culture that translates to the woman taking over the family.

“We are trying to copy white people, right? I believe in the sacrosanctity of our culture, the essence and the core of our culture,” he said.

“The white man kneels down to propose to a girl, you know what it means? The girl takes over the family. This is why whenever you disagree with your wife overseas, you are kicked out and the wife takes the house. As a young man, you should be in charge of your destiny. Kneeling down for a woman makes you a fool”.

The ‘Lionheart’ star also said he does not believe the practice signifies love or civilisation.

“I have lived with my wife for 51 years, nobody has come to say ‘please stop beating this woman’. Is it hatred that united us?” he asked his interviewer.

The actor joked that men who insist on going on their knees to pop the question, risk being kicked out of the house by their wives.

“Kneel down before your wife and I’ll sympathise with you when she takes over the home,” he said.

This is not the first time the actor would court controversy over comments around marriage and relationships.

He made similar comments in Igbo language in January 2020, saying: “A marriage is recognised when a woman offers her future husband wine on her knees, signifying his authority. Therefore, the wife should kneel before her husband and not the other way round.”

He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Josephine and they are blessed with six children. They have been married for more than 51 years and their union is said to be the longest in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

They were both broadcasters and parents to six children. Their sons, Linc and Yul, are both in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Actor, Eddie Nartey says Ghanaians should not blame celebrities signed by Zylofon Media for the failure of the gold dealership firm owned by Nana Appiah Mensah alias NAM 1.

Some section of Ghanaians after the failure of MenzGold blamed celebrities signed onto its sister company, Zylofon Media for the failure.

Some say they spent huge sums of money and were given material things which were not deserving of them and that brought NAM1 to where he is now.

But speaking in an interview with Delay monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Eddie mentioned that Zylofon and MenzGold were treated as separate entities.

Eddie Nartey indicated that celebrities who were signed and other workers of Zylofon Media were people who got there because of the value they brought to the brand and therefore, they were paid what they were due.
