  • Govt clears legacy debts to bulk oil distributors – Senyo Hosi reveals

The government has fully paid off its indebtedness to bulk oil distribution companies (BDCs) that accrued between 2011 and 2015, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution Companies, Senyo Hosi has revealed.

According to Mr Hosi, the final payments, which included interests accrued on the debt, was done on January 13, 2020, through bonds issued by the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) to the Legacy Bonds Limited, a special purpose vehicle jointly owned by the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) and the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB).

A press statement from CBOD issued Monday [February 10, 2020) said the amount received was now due for redistribution to beneficiary banks and petroleum service providers.

  • Pharmaceutical companies cut supplies to hospitals over NHIS payment delay

Dealers in medical supplies say they have been forced to get heavy on medical facilities following the delay in the payments of debts owed them.

The supply companies have, therefore, resolved not to render their service to medical facilities indebted to them.

A release issued by the Chamber of Pharmacy Ghana (CoPG) on Monday, February 10, 2020, and signed by Chairman, Harrison Kofi Abutiate, directed the pharmaceutical companies to abide by the resolutions reached at their last meeting on January 22.

Per the resolution, the pharmaceutical companies are to request the hospitals to provide a payment guarantee before medicines could be supplied to them.

It also resolved that: “Health facilities owing more than three (3) months shall no more enjoy any credit facilities from our members.”

This, the CoPG argues, is the only way to sustain the companies.

“Meanwhile, we call on government as a matter of urgency to ensure adherence to the NHI Act on reimbursements to Service Providers,” the Chamber added.

In a related development, the Chamber of Pharmacy, Ghana has appealed to government to review the current Ministry of Health framework contract and revert to the decentralised procurement system by the Regional Health Directorates and Teaching Hospitals, through national competitive tenders.

“The Chamber will like to remind the government and all stakeholders that, we will ensure that good-quality health commodities are available, accessible, and affordable to all people living in Ghana and anchored by a sustainable, reliable, responsive, efficient, and well-coordinated supply chain.”

  • Galamsey fight: Content of leaked video wasn’t for public consumption Omari Wadie

A video making the rounds on social media seems to have questioned government’s willingness and commitment in the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey in the country.

In the video, Horace Ekow Ewusi, the NPP former Vice Chairman of the Agona West Constituency, is heard discussing with Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, how they can engage with some party folks on some mining concessions in order to raise money from the activity to support the party.

Reacting to this on UTV, National 3rd Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Micheal Omari Wadie said: “I have a problem with the fact that a Regional Chairman of the party will deliberately record a conversation with the Minister…the conversation that went on (in the video) wasn’t for public consumption”

  • Ghanaian midfielder in trouble over ‘Jesus loves you’ shirt

  • Publicity stunt or not: Why did Wendy Shay go to Prophet Akwasi Awuah’s church?

Believe it or not, celebrities engage in publicity stunts to promote their yet to be released singles, movies, projects or just for the attention. Sometimes the stunt totally works; and in some instances it completely backfires.

Another reason is that once they make it, the pressure of staying at the top and being relevant is heightened. The more people talk about a star, the more popular they are and the more money some make.

It is interesting to know that some publicity stunts are so well orchestrated that you would never know it’s fake, while others are so embarrassing you’re left wondering if the stunt was worth the buzz.

Whether the stunts are successfully pulled off or go down in flames, they usually succeed in getting the celeb talked about.

One showbiz personality who has courted controversies is Wendy Shay. The RuffTown signee is in the news again and some folks are wondering if a kidnap prophecy about her is real or just a publicity stunt.

The prophet whose name is mentioned as Akwasi Appiah, popularly known Jesus Ahuofe, is seen in a viral video predicting the kidnap of Wendy Shay before the year ends.

The prophet added that Wendy Shay would be killed for ritual purposes. He claimed in the video that Wendy Shay was put in a small room, where the said rituals were done, after which her body was left to rot.

He admonished people close to her to warn her to repent from her lifestyle or she would not see the end of 2020.

We were informed about a plot to kidnap Wendy Shay in 2019 Bullet

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rufftown Records, Ricky Nana Agyemang, otherwise known as Bullet, in an interview with Zion Felix revealed that his camp was informed of a plot to kidnap Wendy Shay in December last year.

According to Bullet, the prophecy came as a reminder from God and as such Ghanaians should not take it lightly.

Wendy Shay’s visit to Prophet Akwasi AwuahFast forward, days after the release of the infamous video, the ‘Uber Driver’ hitmaker was spotted in the church of the prophet detailing how the kidnap prophecy came as a confirmation to her family and that of her record label.

Whiles a lot of questions are being asked as to whether it was prudent for the singer to have visited the Newlife kingdom Chapel, GhanaWeb has put together two analogies.

    Analogy one:

The prophet in the viral video did not request to see the Rufftown Records artiste but only admonished her to change her lifestyle to avoid being kidnapped.

    Analogy two:

Just after the prophecy went viral, Wendy Shay took to her social media pages to request for the contact of Prophet Akwasi Awuah. Days after the popular search, Wendy Shay is now spotted in the church.

Not only that, but her team goes ahead to film why she went to the church. Finally, in showing off to the public, she posted the video on her Instagram page with the caption, “…Indeed God reveals to redeem ..it was an honor to worship with Prophet Akwasi Appiah at Newlife kingdom Chapel
Thank you all for your Prayers#ShayGang #Shayforever #Mosthigh.”

Is it a Rufftown Record’s strategy in promoting Wendy Shay ahead of an upcoming release or it was just a leap of faith meeting?

  • Probe Airbus scandal Pentecostal and Charismatic Council

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has expressed concern about the Airbus bribery scandal as far as the purchase of airplanes for the Ghana Armed Forces is concerned.

“We call on the security agencies to conduct serious investigations” into the matter, the Council said in a communiqué issued after deliberations at the 2020 Conference of Heads of Churches and Organisations held at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa Fetteh from 4 to 7 February 2020, adding that anybody found culpable should be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor, Mr Martin Amidu, has begun probing the Airbus scandal.

The probe began on 4 February 2020.

In a press statement, Mr Amidu said there is reasonable suspicion of corruption in the Airbus scandal.

President Nana Akufo-Addo referred the matter to the Office of the Special Prosecutor after court documents from the UK and the US found Airbus SE guilty in a series of unlawful business deals in countries including Ghana where a relative of a top elected government official was allegedly bribed.

“The Special Prosecutor has determined that the said referral and deferred prosecution of agreements and judgments accompanying them raise reasonable suspicion of the commission of corruption and corruption-related offences of bribery of public officers and the use of public office by public officers for private office which are offences falling within the mandate of this office under the office of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 Act (595). A preliminary investigation was, accordingly opened on 4 February 2020 by this office into the allegations contained in the judgements referred to this Office aforesaid,” Mr Amidu said in his statement.

The statement further noted that the relevant domestic public institutions have been invited to provide relevant documents to aid in the probe.

It, therefore, urged the public not to speculate or politicise the content of the UK and America courts on the matter until after the outcome of the investigations.

“The relevant domestic public institutions which can assist the ongoing investigations have been contacted to provide information and documents under Act (595).

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor appeals to the general public not to speculate or politicise the disclosures made in the deferred prosecutor agreements and judgements so as to allow this office to treat the suspected crimes as suspected crimes simplicita and nothing more pending the conclusion of the investigations,” the statement said.

The latest post from Olakunle Churchill, the estranged husband of Nollywood star Tonto Dikeh seems to be an indirect shot fired at the latter.

Churchill has advised his followers to stop looking for a partner, and focus on their lives through hard work and determination.

According to the astute businessman, the right partner will find his or her way to you when the time is right.

The part that netizens find as a direct message to her ex-wife is when he advised that followers should focus on rebuilding their lives.

His post though is the truth about life can be related to the separation of him and Tonto Dikeh as he has moved on with another woman while Tonto is still singer since the split.

Maybe he has been following the gimmicks by Tonto on social media and thinks it is unnecessary but must direct her attention on rebuilding her life,

  • You are useless if you dont speak for NDC Elikplim to NDC executives

A former flag bearer hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Elikplim Agbemava, has charged the executive body of the National Democratic Congress to exercise their freedom of speech and stand up for the party, as and when the need arises, using the various media platforms.

According to him, aspiring ministers and parliamentary candidates should take up the task of speaking to topical issues of national importance when they emerge, rather make it the sole mandate of the Director of Communications, Sammy Gyamfi.

He believes any member who has been compromised and therefore cannot speak is useless to the party and must therefore give way for new blood.
In a Facebook post, Elikplim said “If you know you are compromised and therefore cannot risk your liberty to exercise your freedom of speech, then I am afraid you are not useful to the party now. Give way to new blood. Rotten wood does not light fire”

    Below are his full comments

Today is Sunday but I will like to fire this out of my mind. I know the party executives are working very hard for the NDC. But they are just administrators. Administering a party is enough headache. To also dump the burden of moving from radio and TV station to station on them is unconscionable.

I ask who are those who want to be ministers in the next JM government? Where are the parliamentary shadow ministers for the various sectors of the economy. Issues of health, corruption and the environment have been very topical national issues. Yet Sammy Gyamfi is the one-man-1000. It can’t work this way. Are we waiting to assume front line positions when the trophy is won?

If that is the strategy then I am sorry. The sweetness of the pudding is in the eating thereof.

If you know you are compromised and therefore cannot risk your liberty to exercise your freedom of speech them I am afraid you are not useful to the party now. Give way to new blood. Rotten wood does not light fires

  • Coronavirus: Public Health Director warns against evacuating Ghanaian students in China

The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Badu Sarkodie has advised against evacuating Ghanaian students in Wuhan, China, following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

On the Citi Breakfast Show, he noted that this would be in line with some recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Among other things, WHO recommended that measures be put in place to limit the risk of exportation or importation of the disease between countries.

But WHO also noted that these measures can be implemented without unnecessary restrictions on international travel.

Dr. Sarkodie instead advised that the government provides needed resources to the students in China.

“If they have adequate support from the government of Ghana beyond what the government of China is providing here, it would provide them adequate assurance and hope and let them be confident enough to keep staying there.”

“It will be better they stay there and as much as possible. That is what I will recommend because I agree with the World Health Organisation,” he said.

The new coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and the city of 11 million was later put on lockdown.

The outbreak was declared a global emergency by the WHO on 30 January.

There have been more than 40,000 cases of the virus globally, mostly in China.

The total number of deaths in China alone stands at 908.

But the number of newly-infected people per day is said to have stabilised.

    Students desperate for evacuation

Ghanaian students in Wuhan have been calling on the government to evacuate them over the novel coronavirus fears.

But the government insists it will take its time on the matter and weigh its options.

A Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, also complained about the lack of action from the state on the calls.

The Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, however, stressed that the government will not bow to any pressure.

  • Ignore reports suggesting I purchased one of the missing excavators – MP

Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, Elvis Morris Donkoh has asked the general public to ignore reports suggesting he purchased one of the missing excavators.

In a Facebook post, he entreated the public to disregard such publication as it only seeks to dent his hard earned reputation and that of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Information.

    Read his full statement below.

    Hon Elvis Morris Donkoh Writes:

My attention has been drawn to a statement which has been circulated widely in the media landscape with the above caption purporting to be coming from my good self and the office I occupy.

This I believe is a calculated agenda aimed at damaging my reputation in the minds of right thinking members of my Constituents.

I find this intriguing and cruelty from my naysayers who are nothing short of doomsday pretenders and sentimental charlatans.

Well-meaning Ghanaians should treat such a statement with the greatest of contempt it deserves as no agenda occasioned against me will subject me to public ridicule.

The statement I see further as malicious and could be best described as false misrepresentation of facts and the office I occupy as it is aimed at ridiculing the harmonious relationship I have with officers and members of the party.

The circulated statement is not only *FAKE* but poor in logical reasoning, factually empty and consistently inaccurate.

  • MP allegedly confesses buying one of the missing excavators for GH¢ 200,000

Member Of Parliament for Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency Elvis Morris Donkoh, has allegedly confessed securing one of the missing excavators, the ghanaiandemocrat.com reports.

In the press release purported to be from the MP, he details how Prof Frimpong Boateng linked him up with Ekow Ewusi from whom he purchased the excavator.

    Full press statement

My attention has been drawn to a video in circulation purported to be secretly recorded and released to the public domain by Mr. Horace Ekow Ewusi, 1st Vice Chairman of the NPP and his accomplices where my name has been mentioned and some allegations levelled against my personality.

    I want to take this medium to set the records straight and establish every fact behind this matter with all dignity;

I needed an excavator to buy so I discussed it with Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in his office somewhere 2017. He asked me to contact Prof. Frimpong Boateng and he can introduce me to someone for a genuine business.

I went to see Prof. Frimpong Boateng, he accepted it and told me to exercise some level of patience because some new excavators were ceased from three Chinese galamseyers so he will consult Mr. Horace Ekow Ewusi and get back to me.

In an attempt to get the machine with all alacrity, I consulted Mr. Ekow Ewusi and he equally confirmed that some ceased excavators from three Chinese galamseyers are ready to be auctioned.

Myself and Mr. Ekow Ewusi went to see the excavators and I agreed to buy one at a cost of Ghc200,000 which payment and delivery were made to that effect on that very day.

After owning the excavator, the necessary documentations were made and up to date every document at my disposal is genuine.

Therefore, I want to state this clearly without any ambiguity that, I have no hand in this galamsey matter and I would advice Mr. Ekow Ewusi to put my name to rest.

This is an attempt by Mr. Ekow Ewusi to undermine my hard-earned reputation all in the name of contest in Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency. I want to advice him to rather concentrate on his suspension and allow the necessary investigations into the matter at hand.

I want to assure my party members and the constituents at large to continue to have faith in me as their member of parliament and I promise to be faithful and loyal to them for a better future.

    Thank you.

Addressing about 1000 people who had gathered for the national launch of the manifesto in Accra, the Flagbearer of GUM, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrew, said the party’s campaign for the 2020 general election would hinge primarily on industrialisation and job creation.

“We are coming to continue the great dream of Dr Nkrumah that has been abandoned for many years. We have good plans and good policies for a better future and it is a plan to make Ghana prosper and be great again,” he stressed.

    Industrialisation

To promote industrialisation, he said a GUM government would operate a duty-free port to facilitate trade for the local business community. He said the party would also ensure that there was free power for local businesses to thrive.

“I want to assure all Ghanaians that the high cost of doing business at the port will be a thing of the past because there will be free port under a GUM government.

Also, electricity is essential to the growth of businesses so I will ensure that power is free for local businesses while expatriates will pay the appropriate rates for the power they consume,” he stressed.

    Education

The GUM flag-bearer said if the party was elected into office, there would be an immediate review of the current educational system to be centred on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a means to produce the human resource with the expertise to ensure sustainable development.

He said the current syllabi for basic, second-cycle as well as tertiary institutions had failed to prepare students to have the technical ability or critical thinking skills to address nagging development challenges.

Rev. Andrew said there would be an overhaul in the education architecture to eliminate the use of examination to measure the intellect of students.

“I want to stress here that the emphasis will be on skills acquisition instead of merely passing examination. In fact, certificates will not be the basis for appointment under a GUM government,” he said.

    Galamsey

Rev. Andrew said it was worrying that although Ghana had been blessed with abundant natural resources including gold, diamond, bauxite and manganese, those resources had been poorly managed by successive leaders.

Wading into the brouhaha surrounding the illegal mining menace, he said it was evident that the government had failed to deal with the canker.

He said the GUM would take bold steps to streamline the activities in the small-scale mining sector and give opportunities to all people to mine sustainably.

    Welfare

The GUM flag-bearer said the party had a policy in place to provide monthly allowances for all persons who retire at age 60 to make life easier for them.

He also said a lifeline would be given to prisoners to be reunited with their families “when the GUM wins the election and forms a government.”

“People who are in prison, except those who committed murder, will be taken out and made to do community service for six months under supervision, after which they will be supported to start life afresh,” he said.

He added that the GUM would prioritise community service over custodial sentence for convicts.

    Deliver promises

The National Chairman of the party, Dr Maxwell Kofi Awuku, gave an assurance that they would deliver on all their promises if voted into power.

  • Aduana Stars coach blasts journalists for not using the defending champions tag for them

Aduana Stars coach W.O. Tandoh has blasted journalists for not attaching ‘defending champions’ to his outfit name when it is being pronounced.

“The journalist in this country look bias towards Aduana Stars, why I am I saying so, Aduana is the league champions, we are the defending champions.”

When have you heard on any media platform that a team is going to play against the defending champions, but rather you will ridicule Aduana and think about Hearts and Kotoko and you are uplifting them. Are they better than Aduana? No, they are older than us.

“Aduana is the defending champions so I want to urge you the journalists to correct yourselves and note that we are on course, that’s why I always say that Aduana is defending champions, we want everybody to acknowledge that we are league champions.

  • MPs fight over Airbus scandal

Members of the Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) engaged in a heated debate last Friday after the NPP MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, had made a statement on the Airbus SE bribery scandal involving some Ghanaian government officials.

The Assin South MP had detailed the circumstances leading to the purchase of three C-295 military transport aircraft by the NDC government under Prof. John Atta Mills, which he said smacked of cost inflation and bribery and, therefore, called on Parliament to also do an independent investigation into that matter.

“Mr. Speaker, the rather disturbing revelations contained in the Deferred Prosecution Agreement and Statements of Facts on the case reveal, inter alia, that some officials of Airbus SE between 2009 and 2015 made or promised success-based commission payments of approximately five million Euros to Intermediary 5, who is alleged to be a close relative of high ranking elected Ghanaian Government Official (Government Official 1),” he said.

He pointed out that the Statement of Facts further revealed the payments to Intermediary 5 by officials of Airbus SE were thus intended to induce or reward improper favour by Government Official 1 over the purchase of three C-295 military transport aircraft and that out of the five million Euros promised Intermediary 5, 3.85 million Euros was paid between March 2012 and February 2014.

He further asserted that according to the United States Department of Justice to the District Court for the District of Columbia, Government Official 1, who was alleged to be an elected government official and was in office from 2009 to 2016, made direct contact with the management of Airbus SE in respect of the purchase of the aircraft a few months after he assumed office.

He, therefore, said the issue had gained international dimension and needed the immediate attention of Parliament.

The Minority members seriously opposed the statement and questioned why the Speaker should admit such a statement which was full of alleged factual inaccuracies and innuendos.

According to the NDC MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, such a sensitive issue should have been admitted on the floor through motion and not a statement.

He said a precedent had been set and that when the NDC assumed the Majority in Parliament, it would call for investigation into alleged BOST saga, Ameri, disappearance of 500 excavators, disappearance of 400 tricycles and the missing gold under the present government.

According to the North Tongu MP, the Minority would be prepared for any investigation only if it would be fair and transparent because that would definitely vindicate the NDC government then that nothing wrong was done.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said indeed there were serious issues with the acquisition of the military aircraft by the then NDC government.

According to him, the government then bought a used aircraft for $35 million while a completely new one was then selling at $22 million.

He said the further purchase of staircase and the wings of the aircraft brought the total cost of each aircraft to around $60 million.

He pointed out that hangar alone for one of the planes was built by the government at a cost of $17 million which was so outrageous.

He, however, said that it would be a duplication of work for Parliament to also do another investigation into the matter which had already been referred to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for investigation by the President of the Republic.

He stated that Parliament could rather rely on the outcome of the investigations of the OSP for any further action on the matter.

  • Martin Amidu speaks on Airbus bribery scandal

Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has urged political parties to stop politicizing the issue of the Airbus bribery scandal.

A statement issued and signed by him, says the appropriate offices have been contacted to assist the office of the SP to properly investigate the scandal.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor appeals to the public not to speculate or politicize the disclosures made in the deferred prosecution agreements and judgment so as to allow this Office to treat the suspected crimes as suspected crimes simpliciter and nothing more, pending the conclusion of the investigation”.

If you may recall, President Akufo-Addo referred the matter to the Office of the Special Prosecutor after court documents from the UK and the US surfaced alleging wrongdoing by Airbus SE in a series of business deals in countries including Ghana.

According to Martin Amidu, the Office of the SP commenced investigation on 4th February 2020.

Per the statement, the SP “has determined that the said referral and the deferred prosecution agreements and judgments accompanying them raise reasonable suspicion of the commission of corruption and corruption-related offences of bribery of public officers and the use of public office by public officers for private profit, which are offences falling within the mandate of this Office under the Officer of the Special Prosecutor, Act, 2017 (Act 959)”.

    Airbus Bribery Scandal

The bribery scandal cited Ghana, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Taiwan as destinations where Airbus, the largest aerospace multinational in Europe, admitted that it paid huge bribes in order to secure contracts.

The Crown Court at Southwark in the United Kingdom passed judgment on 31st January 2020, between the Director of the Serious Fraud Office and Airbus SE, in which the European multinational aerospace corporation was fined $3.9 billion for the payment of bribes to secure deals in the five countries named Ghana.

The London High Court found Airbus guilty and imposed a fine of three billion pounds (£3bn) as penalties.

Airbus was charged with five counts of failing to prevent bribery, having used a network of secret agents to pay large-scale backhanders to officials in foreign countries to land high-value contracts.

In the case of Ghana, the operations were reported to have taken place between 2009 and 2015; during which period John Dramani Mahama served as Vice President and then later as President.

Meanwhile, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are playing political football with the issue.

Even though no name was mentioned in the UK Crown Court in Southwark’s ruling, the NPP at a press conference, was categorical that government official 1 is Mahama and has, therefore, asked him to break his silence over the allegation.

The NDC has refuted any wrongdoing.

  • Two dead, others injured in accident at Dominase

An accident on the Dominase road near Komenda Junction in the Central region, Saturday, February 8, has claimed the lives of two unidentified persons and injured several others.

According to the Central Regional PRO of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Division Officer 1, Abdul Wasiu Hudu who was at the scene of the incident, a burst tyre caused the minibus the victims were traveling in to pivot off the road into the bush.

While those injured were rushed to the hospital before the arrival of the police and fire service personnel, the dead bodies were left in the car.

This according to Mr. Wasiu Hudu was due to the presence of bees, who attacked residents anytime they attempted to retrieve the bodies.

He told journalists, due to frequent accidents recorded on various highways across the country, the fire service is coming up with a program that will teach basic first aid to residents along highways on how to assist accident victims.

He was optimistic, it will help reduce fatalities caused by poor handling of victims after an accident.

Sarah Ocran and her children are among 15 victims of the blaze which occurred Friday night.

Residents say it took the Ghana National Fire Service personnel two hours to arrive at the scene.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, eyewitnesses say they heard an explosion from one of the rooms in the building.

According to them, it was followed by flames from the room where the children were sleeping in the absence of their mother.

  • Rampaging soldier kills 20 in Thailand before being shot dead

A soldier who killed 20 people in a gun rampage in the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima has been shot dead by the security forces, Thai police say.

Jakraphanth Thomma on Saturday killed his commanding officer before stealing weapons from a military camp.

The suspect continued his attack on the streets and in a shopping centre in Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat.

The gunman, who posted material to social media, was shot dead after being cornered all night in the building.

His motives for his actions remain unclear.

“We don’t know why he did this. It appears he went mad,” Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit told Reuters news agency.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul posted on his Facebook page on Sunday morning, congratulating the security forces for their actions in the north-eastern Thai town.

“Thank you police and army for ending the situation. Shooter shot dead!!!”

Officials said that the death toll stood at 20, with 42 wounded, revising an earlier total of 21 dead.

“The official number of the dead right now is 20 and 42 wounded. Of them, 21 are still in hospital and 21 have gone home,” said Narinrat Phitchayakhamin, head of the Provincial Office of Public Health in the town.

However, it is still possible that the number of fatalities could rise.

What happened at the shopping centre?

Shortly after 03:00 local time (20:00 GMT Saturday) gunfire was heard as the security forces raided the building, trying to dislodge the gunman.

Several people were led out of the centre, but there were concerns that more people were being held hostage.

At 09:30 (02:30 GMT) on Sunday, police confirmed that the gunman had been shot dead, but so far there are no more details about how the operation concluded.

    People fleeing the shopping centre

People described hiding under tables in the shopping centre before they managed to flee

One of the people freed told the BBC how she and others hid in a bathroom on the fourth floor, before fleeing to the second and hiding under a restaurant table for three hours, hearing at least four gunshots before she saw some soldiers and could get to safety.

Charlie Crowson, a teacher of English who lives in Nakhon Ratchasima, told the BBC there were “bodies on the streets” of the normally peaceful town.

He said that one of his girlfriend’s former students was among those killed in the attack that lasted for many hours.

    How did the attack unfold?

It began at about 15:30 local time on Saturday (08:30 GMT) at the Suatham Phithak military camp, where the commanding officer, named by the Bangkok Post as Col Anantharot Krasae, was killed.

The Post said a 63-year-old woman, Col Anantharot’s mother-in-law, and another soldier were also killed there.

The suspect seized arms and ammunition from the camp before taking a Humvee-type vehicle.

He then opened fire at a number of sites before arriving at Terminal 21 at about 18:00 local time (11:00 GMT).

Local media footage appeared to show the suspect getting out of his vehicle and firing shots as people fled.

CCTV footage showed him inside the shopping centre with a raised rifle.

What did the suspect post on social media?

He posted on his social media accounts during the attack, with one post on Facebook asking whether he should surrender.

He had earlier posted an image of a pistol with three sets of bullets, along with the words “it is time to get excited” and “nobody can avoid death”.

Facebook has now taken the page down.

It said: “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and the community affected by this tragedy in Thailand. There is no place on Facebook for people who commit this kind of atrocity, nor do we allow people to praise or support this attack.”
