  • Mental health in Kenya: I was accused of bewitching my husband

Esther Kiama was working as a teacher in Nyeri, central Kenya, when she received the call.

    Her husband, David, was unwell.

“And it is not a minor illness,” the caller emphasised, and then explained: “It’s a mental illness.”

At that point, in 2005, Mrs Kiama had not seen her husband much over the previous year as he had moved to another town to set up a business.

On the times she visited she had not noticed his health problems.

But once the call came, Mrs Kiama left immediately to find him.

“We had to go get him home so that he could get medication,” she told the BBC.

Mrs Kiama said that her husband “would talk to himself, throwing his arms about, appearing to be talking to people while there was really no-one he was talking to”.

She was describing what later would be diagnosed as bipolar disorder.

“It got worse when he came home. I would leave him in the house and one day I found that he had burnt the ceiling, saying there were strange people he was looking for up there.”

It was as if her husband had transformed into someone she did not know, and she did not understand what was happening.

    ‘You have bewitched our son’

She decided that she would take him to hospital but her relatives would not let her.

They accused Mrs Kiama of casting a spell on her husband.

“His dad came to take him and said: ‘I have been told that my son is sick, I have come because you have bewitched him.’”

The forceful removal of her husband of 15 years was a traumatic experience for her and their four children.

“I was shocked at first, but I’m a believer, even though it really shocked me, I believed this would end,” she said.

Meanwhile she could see that her husband’s health was deteriorating.

But because of their belief that he was under a spell, Mrs Kiama’s in-laws did not look for medical help.

Mental health problems in Kenya are sometime associated with witchcraft or curses, rather than something can be treated or managed.

Kenya’s ministry of health says that many people do not seek help for these kinds of conditions and would rather conceal their illness.

The World Health Organization estimates that one in four people will be affected by a mental health problem or neurological disorder at some point in their lives.

There are no up-to-date figures for the situation in Kenya – an indication, perhaps, of how much work needs to still be done on the issue in the country.

    Chased with a machete

For three years, Mr Kiama was a burden to his parents, especially to his elderly mother who at some point fell ill, seeing the sad state of her son.

Occasionally, neighbours would contact Mrs Kiama about her husband.

“Sometimes I’d be called to be told that he was in town roaming about and I’d go hire a taxi and take him back,” Mrs Kiama says. She would at times go and cook for him.

But she was still blamed for her husband’s behaviour and this filtered through to him.

“He once chased after me with a panga [machete] saying: ‘You bewitched me.’ But I asked him: ‘If you kill me, who will cook for you?’ He then threw away his panga,” she said.

Mrs Kiama was grateful that except for that incident, her husband was not violent.

    What is bipolar disorder?

    • There are different types of bipolar
    • Those with type 1 experience periods of manic highs and depressive lows
    • Those with type 2 experience severe depression and mild manic episodes – known as hypomania – that last for a shorter period of time
    • Those with cyclothymia experience fewer severe mood swings, but they can last longer
    • During a manic episode, those with bipolar disorder can feel euphoric and have lots of energy, ambitious plans and ideas. But they can become aggressive, and experience symptoms of psychosis
    • The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown. Some experts believe it can be developed as a result of severe emotional distress as a child, as well as genetic and chemical factors

Mrs Kiama said it was difficult watching someone she loved suffering so much from an illness that she hardly understood. She also struggled with the reaction she got from friends.

Many turned their backs on her.

Kenyan psychotherapist Maggie Gitu, who specialises in marriage, family and sex issues, said it was not right to label mentally ill people as “insane” or “crazy”, as often happens.

The labels obscure understanding the condition.

    Abandoned by friends

She told the BBC that medical check-ups were necessary to determine what kind of mental disorder a person could be suffering from.

She said that mental health problems could be triggered by stress, feelings of loneliness, fear, panic or a feeling of not being appreciated.

Despite her husband’s condition, Mrs Kiama was not going to abandon him, against all the advice from her friends.

“I told them it was because of the vow. We had had a church wedding. He came to pick me from home, as a young bride.

“To say the truth, we loved each other very much… we had four children”.

    Esther Wanjiru Kiama
Esther Kiama said her children have now been taught not to be afraid of their dad’s illness

In the end, Mrs Kiama decided that she was going to reclaim her husband from her in-laws.

“After three years, I told my children [that] we are going to steal dad,” she said.

Together with her children and a psychiatrist, they devised a way to get her husband out of his parents’ home.

By then, she said: “His finger and toe nails had grown long and dirty that it would take days to clean them. His beard and hair had overgrown so much that it gave him a horrible appearance.

“He was like Nebuchadnezzar of the Bible, totally unkempt.”

    Back with the children

Mr Kiama’s bipolar disorder was then diagnosed and he was admitted to hospital for about two months.

Since leaving hospital, he has been recovering at home, although he is still on long-term medication.

The family is now back together.

“The doctor has counselled my children, how to live with their dad and they should love him the way he is… and it has worked,” Mrs Kiama said.

  • Ghana Ambulance Service palaver: Police should descend on prank callers

Emergency Technicians at the National Ambulance Service Dispatch Centre have bemoaned the rate at which some individuals deliberately interrupt their work with prank calls.

Matilda Nartey, Head of Dispatch at the centre, in an interview with Citi FM, an Accra-based private radio station, recently revealed that her outfit records as high as over 200 prank calls in an hour, a situation she described as worrying.

“Prank calls are giving us a very big problem. It is making our work very difficult. Prank callers are just engaging the line to prevent genuine cases from getting to us. Ever since the 112 was launched, within an hour we received more than 200 prank calls,” she lamented.

“Some call just to insult, and some even call to demand money. We’ve been writing all the numbers that have been calling for us to give it to the telecos, and also to report to the police. If it will be possible, the individuals behind that could be prosecuted,” she added.

The Chronicle fully supports the resolve by the National Ambulance Service Dispatch Centre to report these prank callers to the police for the necessary action to be taken.

Ambulance services all over the world are considered an emergency, but if some unscrupulous people are refusing to fall in line, then the laws of the land must deal severely with these people we consider as nation wreckers.

The Chronicle is happy that the system can record numbers that call the emergency line – 112. We are equally happy that these numbers that called the call centre to deceive the staff were all recorded.

As Matilda Nartey noted during the interview with the radio station, the numbers should quickly be supplied to the telecos for the latter to reveal the identity of their owners for the law to deal with them.

The authorities must crack down heavily on these prank callers before they destroy the service, which has come to boost health delivery in the country. Within the short period that the ambulance services have been in place, several lives that would have been lost have been saved. This means we need to sustain the service to help save more lives, especially in the rural areas where access to vehicles and proper health delivery sometimes a challenge.

We, the media, must also take it upon ourselves, or as part of our corporate social responsibility, to educate the public about the dangers of making prank calls to the Ambulance Service call centre.

If we do this, and the police and telecos also play their roles, the problem would be solved, but if we sit idle, the nation wreckers would succeed in destroying the country.

  • Bribery, use of public office for private profit will be subjects of my investigation – Martin Amidu

The Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu who is probing the Airbus scandal has released a statement on the issue.

In a press statement, Mr. Amidu said there is a reasonable suspicion of corruption in the Airbus scandal.

He further said that offences such as bribery of public officials and the use of public office for private profit will be subjects of his investigation.

The President referred the matter to the Office of the Special Prosecutor after court documents from the UK and the US surfaced alleging wrongdoing by Airbus SE in a series of business deals in countries including Ghana.

Excerpts of the press release signed by Martin Amidu read:

“The Special Prosecutor has determined that the said referral and deferred prosecution of agreements and judgments accompanying them raise reasonable suspicion of the commission of corruption and corruption-related offences of bribery of public officers and the use of public office by public officers for private office which are offences falling within the mandate of this office under the office of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 Act (595). A preliminary investigation was accordingly opened on 4th February 2020 by this Office into the allegations contained in the judgements referred to this Office aforesaid.”

The statement went on further to indicate that, the appropriate state agencies with the capacity to aid in the enquiry have already been tasked to provide full details of the saga.

It, therefore, urged members of the general public to desist from drawing conclusions on the matter along with speculation and or political lines but rather, exercise restraint for the outcome of the investigations.

“The relevant domestic public institutions which can assist the ongoing investigations have been contacted to provide information and documents under Act (595). The Office of the Special Prosecutor appeals to the general public not to speculate or politicize the disclosures made in the deferred prosectors agreements and judgements so as to allow this office to treat the suspected crimes as suspected crimes simpliciter and nothing more pending the conclusion of the investigations.”

    Airbus Scandal

Aircraft manufacturing giant, Airbus, has been in the news within the past few days after it agreed on a legal settlement of about £3 billion over its involvement in an alleged bribery scandal between 2009 and 2015 in various markets including Ghana.

The scandal has caused a political storm in Ghana over accusations of Airbus payments to a relative of a government official in connection with the purchase of military planes.

The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) stated that the said agent had no aerospace experience, having previously worked in football merchandising and as a facilities manager.

It did not say what the agent, who had been helped by two unnamed British television actors, did with the money.

  • NaCCA boss files nomination for Kwesimintsim seat

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, Dr Prince Hamid Armah, has successfully filed his nomination to contest the Kwesimintsim Constituency primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) .

He filed barely 24 hours after picking forms at the Kwesimintsim Constituency office on Thursday.

Dr. Armah was in the company of some past and present party executives, council of elders, polling station executives, party supporters as well as some friends and well-wishers when he submitted the forms.

In the presence of the constituency Chairman and other constituency executives, Dr Armah promised to run a clean campaign devoid of personal attacks and insults.

He also assured the executives of his readiness to avail himself to the constituency executive committee for a meeting with the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) to fashion out modalities on how to make the party more resolute and united after the primaries.

It is still not clear how many people will be contesting the primary for the Kwesimintsim Constituency which has been a safe seat for the governing NPP.

The winner of the primaries is expected to retain the seat for the Party.

Pundits have predicted a two horse-race between the incumbent Joseph Mensah and the NaCCA boss ahead of the primaries scheduled to be held on April 25 with the latter deemed to be slightly on top according to survey conducted by the Crusading Guide newspaper.

The aspirants are expected to be vetted from February 28, 2020, to March 8, 2020.

Ahead of the vetting, Dr Armah has expressed hope of beating the incumbent Member of Parliament and retaining the seat for the NPP.

“Voters in the constituency, particularly members of the NPP which holds the seat, appear to have lost faith in the current leadership and there have been several calls for new leadership,” he said shortly after filing his nomination, adding, “I bring to this race a ray of hope and the opportunity to influence the lives of the people of Kwesimintsim.”

As a native of the constituency and a party member for many years, Dr Armah said he understood the plight and concerns of the people so well and will spare no effort at resolving the challenges.

In a rally-like atmosphere amidst drumming and dancing after submitting the forms, Dr Prince Armah assured the delegates and the constituency as a whole of his determination to do more in uplifting the standards of education, improve economic livelihoods and give back to the community what Kwesimintsim has given growing up.

  • Immigration boss’ convoy involved in accident at Suhum

Two persons have been reported injured while several others escaped unhurt after a convoy of the Director-General of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), caused an accident at the Suhum overhead on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The accident reportedly happened Sunday evening around 4.30 pm.

The convoy which was made up of the GIS boss, Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi’s official vehicle, one Immigration vehicle and two motorcycles were heading to Accra from the Kumasi direction.

An eyewitness said the motor riders, upon approaching the Suhum overpass roundabout stopped in the middle of the road and ordered a private motorist whom they thought was chasing the convoy to stop.

According to the eyewitness, Mr Kwame Takyi got infuriated over the conduct of the private motorist and alighted from his vehicle to have a word with him, an instance that caused heavy vehicular traffic on the stretch.

The report said, while the confrontation was ongoing in the middle of the road, a 40-footer container with registration number GW 102-13, travelling from Kumasi to Accra failed its brake and smashed into other two cars ahead.

The trailer driver and his mate sustain injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment at the emergency centre.

The GIS boss reportedly drove off after the accident occurred without attending to it.

The situation has forced the drivers to divert to a section of the overhead which has not yet been commissioned and opened to traffic.

At the time of filing this report, a towing vehicle had been deployed to the accident scene to tow the mangled trailer from the road.

  • UGMC risks losing government’s financial clearance

The University of Ghana Medical Centre is struggling to recruit highly skilled specialists and consultants to manage the facility.

The danger here is that the hospital may lose government’s financial clearance by next month if they are unable to attract the needed personnel.

So far, out of over one thousand personnel needed only three hundred and five have been recruited for the referral centre.

Chief Executive Officer of the 600-bed facility, Dr Darius Osei told members of Government Assurance Committee that they in serious search of required personnel before the financial clearance expires.

“We are still looking for the special core persons which are the specialist and consultants. So these expectations are to fill in those vital areas. If we wanted to just fill it we would have done it easily because the demand is very high but specifically we need certain persons who will be relevant to our course”.

The government in September 2019 gave clearance for the employment of some 2,000 health personnel for the Medical Centre.

In 2018 the government officially opened the out-patient Department (OPD) and Administration Unit of the 650-bed facility University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

Dr Osei, however, has said the University of Medical Center will be in full operation in March 2021.

He noted that the vision of the centre is to give out first-class healthcare training and research to its citizens, adding that the government of Ghana owes 60 per cent whiles the University of Ghana owes 40 per cent.

He said the centre is partnering Ambulance services to pick up patients directly from home.

Another 89 people died in China’s Hubei province on Saturday, bringing the total death toll around the world to at least 813.

The number of confirmed cases has risen to at least 27,100 in Hubei province alone, with the global number of infected now at more than 37,000 — the vast majority in mainland China.

The number of people killed by the novel coronavirus globally has now overtaken the total death toll for the SARS outbreak in 2003, which killed a total of 774 people across the world.

The World Health Organization has announced it will be sending a team to China to investigate the outbreak of the deadly virus, with the team leader leaving for the country on Monday or Tuesday.

A total of 16 people have tested positive for Wuhan coronavirus in Malaysia, according to a report from state news agency Bernama today.

Out of those, 12 of the 16 cases are Chinese nationals, while the four others are Malaysians.

On Friday, Malaysia announced it would extend its temporary travel ban from only Hubei — the epicenter of the outbreak — to all provinces in China under lockdown due to the virus, according to state media.

The government also said it would make arrangements to repatriate 212 Malaysian embassy and consulate staff in China, and 34 citizens currently in Wuhan.

  • Cyber Security Law to be passed by June – Communications Minister

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, has said that measures have been put in place for the enactment of a new cybersecurity law by June this year to sanitise and safeguard the country’s cyberspace.

The Communications Minister said the Ministry was currently in consultation with relevant stakeholders to solicit their inputs after which a bill would be drafted and tabled before parliament for consideration.

The law, she said, when passed would strengthen mandated state security agencies to make a request for personal details and phone records of individuals suspected of any cybersecurity breaches for further investigations.

The Minister said this in an interview with the media on the side-lines of a float organised by the Ministry of Communications and the National Cyber Security Centre in Accra, to create awareness on a safer internet usage, particularly among children and young people.

The float, organized with support from the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) formed part of the Ministry’s prior activities to mark this year’s Safer Internet Day, which is commemorated on the 11th of February annually.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said “we have laws but we need to strengthen them. The Electronic Transactions Act for instance, contains a bit of security protection, and other international policies we have signed on to also demand that we strengthen our laws to protect our children in their interactions he internet and so by June this year, we are going to introduce new cybersecurity law that would contain provisions on a broader internet interactions to give the security agencies the power to obtain court order to demand for the phone records of persons suspected of breaking the law for further investigations.

“It is currently in the drafting stage and stakeholder consultations. We have done several consultations with the security services, key officials in public service, the judiciary, the Attorney General’s Office, prosecutions, among others.

“We have done a lot of stakeholder engagement and it is out there for people to bring their comments, we are collating all that and we hope that by June, that process of parliamentary approval would be complete and we can start implementing the law,” she added.

Touching on the Safer Internet Day, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said her Ministry had for the past three years undertaken several outreach programmes to educate children on the functionalities of the digital devices such as the mobile phones and the computers they use, the beauty of online experience and the dangers lurking out there to ensure their protection and safety.

She said the Ministry had also put in place a point of contact to assist anyone, particularly children and young people who were unsure of any information they may come across on the internet.

While urging parents to take keen interest to protect their wards against cyber-attacks, the Minister also cautioned the children to be wary of information they divulge when interacting online, particularly with people who were unfamiliar to them in order to avoid falling victims to online criminal activities.

She also called on the National Cyber Security Centre to extend the publicity to other parts of the country to ensure it attained a national goal.

This year’s Safer Internet Day will be held on the theme: “Together For a Better Internet.”

  • Four rare mountain gorillas ‘die in Uganda lightning strike’

Four rare mountain gorillas, including a pregnant female, have died in Uganda after being hit by lightning, a conservation group says.

The three adult females and a male infant were found in Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park with “gross lesions” on their bodies indicating electrocution.

The Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) called this a “big loss for the species”.

There are just over 1,000 mountain gorillas in existence.

The species is restricted to protected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

The four that died were part of a 17-member group, which has been called the Hirwa family by the authorities.

    An infant mountain gorilla
Members of the Hirwa group were photographed in 2012

The Hirwa group had crossed the border from Rwanda into Uganda last year and had been living in Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park.

Mgahinga is in the Virunga Massif range of mountains which straddle the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

“This was extremely sad,” Andrew Seguya, executive secretary of the GVTC, told the BBC.

“The potential of the three females for their contribution to the population was immense,” Dr Seguya said.

He added that the 13 surviving members of the Hirwa family have been found and are feeding well.

    Infographic

Samples from the post-mortem are currently being tested and confirmation of the cause of death is expected within the next three weeks, GVTC said.

In 2018, the mountain gorilla was removed from the list of critically endangered species, after intensive conservation efforts, including anti-poaching patrols, paid off.

  • Kenya: Where toilets have become a constitutional right

In our series of letters from African journalists, media and communication trainer Joseph Warungu looks at a recent court ruling that could end some uncomfortable road trips.

We in Kenya have discovered that we have a constitutional right to relieve ourselves in public, at the expense of the government.

    Here’s how.

Travelling to and from distant places by road in Kenya, is not something many people look forward to.

    Road signs in Kenya
But where are the signs for the toilet?

The biggest challenge is to arrive alive at your destination. Over 3,400 people died on Kenyan roads last year, an increase of 13% from 2018.

The main causes are speeding, drunk driving and fatigue.

If you avoid death or serious injury, you still may not escape the discomfort of the terrible roads.

Although there’s been a lot of improvement of Kenya’s infrastructure in recent years, some of the roads are in poor shape and become unusable during rainy season.

As a former British colony, we drive on the left in Kenya, but people are often forced to drive on whatever’s left of the roads due to the numerous potholes which scar many roads, including the central business district of the capital Nairobi.

However, there’s another reason that makes long-distance road travel a nightmare – toilets.

When you’re squashed in a packed bus, and the call of nature comes, you’re in deep trouble.

That’s because when the authorities built these highways, they did not include public toilets along the way.

So, in these instances, drivers stop in the middle of nowhere, and as soon as the door is opened, people dash in different directions, in search of the nearest bush to relieve themselves.

A truck drives on August 21, 2019 on a section of a road leading down the eastern escarpment of the historic Rift Valley, snaking down the cliffside leading from Limuru town
It is not always safe for passengers to relieve themselves by the roadside

It makes for a disturbing picture of men, women and children forced into a communal squat position.

All shame is lost as the multitude that was in a bus focuses on one grave priority – emptying bladders and bowels.

    ‘Unfortunate meal’

Some students I mentor from a college in the coastal region of Mombasa told me how they recently went on a trip to central Kenya, a distance of about 700km (435 miles).

Before leaving Mombasa, they had a meal, which unfortunately upset their stomachs.

“With no toilets along the way, our bus driver was forced to make several stops near bushes and forests for us to attend to the upheavals in our tummies,” explained one of the students. “It was the most uncomfortable 10-hour journey I’d ever had”.

    Road builder
Lots of new roads have been built in Kenya, now toilets will have to be added too

But now help has come through the actions of one man who went to court to compel the government to bring an end to this kind of suffering.

Adrian Kamotho Njenga sued four public entities arguing they had breached the constitution by failing to provide free toilet facilities along public highways.

The four bodies – the Council of Governors, which brings together the governors of all 47 counties, the Kenya National Highways Authority, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority – all rejected the accusation and turned to a blame game.

Some said Mr Njenga had not shown details of how exactly they had violated the constitution regarding public toilets. Others argued that they do not have a constitutional mandate to provide sanitation services.

But like an impatient man pressed by the call of nature, Mr Njenga continued to push for a solution from the court.

He argued that as a result of the failures of the public entities, road users on public highways had no way of disposing of human waste flowing from human biological functions, and end up relieving themselves in bushes and on the roadside, which is inhuman and degrading.

    No toilets = torture

He even quoted from the Bible’s fifth book, Deuteronomy, in which Moses commands the Israelites who were travelling to the promised land, to designate a place outside their camp where they could go to relieve themselves.

And just in case the court was not persuaded to rely on the Bible as an authority in determining a constitutional matter, Mr Njenga explained the lack of toilets was subjecting commuters to suffer “immense biological, metabolical and physiological torture, when faced with a call of nature while travelling on Kenyan roads”.

Now these are words I don’t think about when answering the call of nature, myself.

But they sound quite serious, and in the end the judge agreed with Mr Njenga, and instructed the authorities concerned to create and implement a policy for the provision of toilets and other sanitation facilities along the Kenyan road network.

So, we’re all looking forward to the day when as commuters, we’ll stop hopping about in the bushes to avoid stepping on human mess in the search for a clear spot, to bring relief to our bodies.

For now, in the absence of the “constitutional” toilets, the beautiful wildlife that can be seen near the roads from Nairobi to Kisumu in the west, or to Mombasa at the coast, will continue to witness some ugly scenes as humans invade their space to dispose of their waste.

  • He spoke out about the Wuhan virus. Now his family and friends fear he’s been silenced

As people across China mourned the death of a whistleblower doctor in an almost unprecedented outpouring of grief and anger on Thursday, little did they know that another truth-teller of the coronavirus outbreak was being silenced, according to friends and family.

Chen Qiushi, a citizen journalist who had been doing critical reporting from Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the outbreak, went missing on Thursday evening, just as hundreds of thousands of people in China began demanding freedom of speech online.

Chen Qiushi, a citizen journalist who had been reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, could no longer be reached by friends and family since Thursday.
Chen Qiushi, a citizen journalist who had been reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, could no longer be reached by friends and family since Thursday.

Li Wenliang, a 34-year-old ophthalmologist in Wuhan, died of the same virus he had tried to warn others about early on in the outbreak, which has now killed more than 800 people mostly in mainland China. Rather than being listened to, he was punished by the police for “spreading rumors,” and later contracted the virus from a patient.

Li’s passing ignited a storm of outrage across China, with an intensity and scope rarely seen in its tightly-controled online sphere. People called for an official apology from the government and flooded social media with the hashtag “I want freedom of speech,” a fundamental right supposedly protected under the country’s constitution.

In an apparent refute of their demand, the hashtag was censored by the next morning.

And Chen, also aged 34 and from northeast China, like Li, remained missing.

Friends and family later found out from the police that he had been forced into quarantine. By Sunday, Chen’s disappearance had started to gain traction on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, with many pleading for his release.

“Hope the government can treat Chen Qiushi in a fair and just way,” one user wrote on Sunday morning. “We can no longer afford a second Li Wenliang!”

Detained in the name of quarantine

Chen arrived in Wuhan on January 24, a day after the city was placed under a state-imposed lockdown, designed to stop citizens from leaving to stem the spread of the virus. He visited overflowing hospitals, funeral parlors and makeshift isolation wards and uploaded videos of what he saw online, offering the world a glimpse into the often grim reality at the heart of the crisis.

Friends said they had been checking in with Chen multiple times a day, fearing he could be taken by the authorities at any time for his reporting. When he stopped answering calls early Thursday evening, they grew increasingly concerned.

In the small hours of Friday, Chen’s friend posted a video message of Chen’s mother on his Twitter page saying her son had disappeared. His close friends say Chen had left them his login details to the platform, in case he was taken by the authorities.

“I’m here to beg everyone online, especially friends in Wuhan to help find Qiushi, find out what’s going on with him,” she said.

Xu Xiaodong, a mixed martial artist wrestler and friend of Chen, quoted Chen's mother as saying Chen had been forcefully quarantined.
Xu Xiaodong, a mixed martial artist wrestler and friend of Chen, quoted Chen’s mother as saying Chen had been forcefully quarantined.

Later that evening in a live broadcast on YouTube, Xu Xiaodong, an outspoken mixed martial artist and friend of Chen, played a message from the journalist’s mother saying he had been forcibly quarantined.

“In the last few hours the Qingdao public security officers and state security officers … notified Qiushi’s parents that Qiushi has already been detained in the name of quarantine. Qiushi’s mother immediately asked them where and when he was taken away, they declined to say,” said Xu.

Xu stressed that, based on his interactions with Chen and the testimony of those on the ground, Chen had been in good health prior to his disappearance.

Both the Wuhan and Qingdao city police said they had no information about Chen when contacted by CNN.

“We’re worried for his physical safety but also worried that while he’s missing he might get infected by the virus,” a friend who had been authorized by Chen to take over his Twitter account should he disappear told CNN. The individual requested anonymity for fear of reprisals by the government.

‘I’m not afraid of dying, why should I be afraid of you’

It is not the first time Chen, a former lawyer, has been silenced by the authorities.

In August, he visited Hong Kong to report on the semi-autonomous Chinese city’s pro-democracy protests. In his broadcasts on Weibo, he challenged China’s official narrative that protesters were “rioters” and “separatists.” Most of those involved were peaceful, he said in a video, “not all of them are rioters.”

Chen’s trip ended abruptly with him being called back to Beijing by mainland authorities. Upon his return, he was repeatedly called in for questioning by different government departments, he said in a later video.

All of Chen’s Chinese social media accounts were subsequently deleted. His 740,000 followers on Weibo, and previously posted video broadcasts, were lost.

Chen Qiushi was silenced by authorities last year after reporting on Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests

But Chen was not out of the public eye for long. In early October, he made his comeback in a YouTube video, vowing to continue to speak out. His channel now has 433,000 subscribers. He also has a Twitter account with 246,000 followers. Both platforms are blocked in China, but many citizens use virtual private networks to hop the Great Firewall and access them.

“Since freedom of speech is a basic citizen’s right written into article 35 of the Chinese constitution, I need to persist because I think this is the right thing to do, no matter how much pressure and obstruction (I) encounter,” he said in the October video.

And continue to speak out he did. On Lunar New Year’s Eve, when most Chinese people were home for family reunions, Chen hopped on a high-speed train from Beijing to Wuhan.

“I’ve said before that I’m a citizen journalist. What kind of journalist am I if I don’t rush to the front line when there is a disaster?” he said in his first video in Wuhan, standing in front of the Hankou Railway Station, where he just disembarked from the train, holding a selfie-stick.

“I will use my camera to witness and document what is really happening under Wuhan’s efforts to contain the outbreak. And I’m willing to help spread the voice of Wuhan people to the outside world,” he said.

“While I’m here, I promise I won’t start or spread rumors. I won’t create fear or panic, nor would I cover up the truth.”

Since then, he has served as the eyes and ears for many outsiders who wanted to follow the reality of life on the ground in Wuhan.

His camera did not shy from the agony and desperation of people suffering from the virus: A person with fever broke down outside a hospital after days of futile attempt to get admitted; patients on oxygen support lay on temporary hospital beds lining crowded hallways; in a hospital corner, a woman in a face mask held tightly onto the ashen body of her deceased relative in a wheelchair, desperately making calls to the morgue.

“I’m scared, I have the virus in front of me and behind me China’s law enforcement,” Chen said in an emotional video recorded in his hotel room on January 30.

For protection, Chen only had basic gear — a mask and a pair of goggles. His parents back in Qingdao, on the eastern coast of China, had already been harassed by authorities, he said.

“But I will keep my spirits up, as long as I’m alive and in this city I will continue my reports,” he said. “I’m not afraid of dying. Why should I be afraid of you, Communist Party?”

“He is a hero. And he has gone missing”

In that video, Chen also spoke of the eight “rumormongers” who were punished by Wuhan police for spreading false information about the outbreak. In reality, they were health care workers trying to sound the alarm, and several of them have now come forward in the media. Li is believed by some to be one of the eight.

“As of now, the Wuhan police has not even offered any apology,” Chen said, his voice raised with indignation.

A week later, Li died of the coronavirus in the intensive care ward of the hospital where he worked. He was hailed as a hero by millions of heartsick and indignant Chinese people, prompting a remarkable torrent of calls online for freedom of speech rarely seen — or permitted — in China.

Amid deep and boiling anger, China announced on Friday that the National Supervisory Commission — the Communist Party’s much-feared disciplinary watchdog which operates in secrecy — is dispatching a team to Wuhan to conduct a “full investigation” into Li’s case.

Chen, meanwhile, remained out of reach by his family, friends and hundreds of thousands of followers. Chinese media has not reported on his disappearance — Chen’s name has long become a sensitive topic in China, as he joked about in one of his videos, joining a growing list of topics that Chinese people are banned from talking about.

Yet some Chinese social media users have managed to find out about it regardless.

“There has never been any superhero descending into this world, only ordinary people who throw themselves into the breach,” read a Weibo post under the hashtag of Chen’s name.

“Because [authorities] don’t agree with his views, he’s not only deprived of the right to speak, but also deprived of his personal freedom?” another user asked.

Some of those who had not heard of Chen before are now starting to ask about him.

“Who is Chen Qiushi? Why are there so many people looking for him? Why does the media censor his name?” asked user Li Zhengda, a Weibo “Big V” — the name given to a user with a large followership — verified as a private equity executive.

“He is a lawyer. He is a journalist. He is someone who dares to go to Wuhan to report the truest conditions when the outbreak is at its most severe stage. He is a hero. And he has gone missing,” read the top reply.

  • Coronavirus: Thousands on cruise ship allowed to disembark after tests

Thousands of people stuck on a cruise ship in Hong Kong for four days have been allowed to disembark after tests for coronavirus came back negative.

Some 3,600 passengers and crew on the World Dream ship were quarantined amid fears some staff could have contracted the virus on a previous voyage.

Another cruise ship where dozens of cases have been confirmed remains in quarantine off Japan.

The outbreak has killed 813 people, all but two in mainland China.

The coronavirus has now killed more people than Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). In 2003, that epidemic killed 774 people in more than two dozen countries.

In the Chinese province of Hubei alone, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, at least 780 people have died, according to regional health officials. More than 34,800 people have been infected worldwide, the vast majority in China.

    Why was the ship quarantined?

The World Dream was put in quarantine on Wednesday after it emerged that three passengers who had sailed on a previous voyage were later found to have contracted the virus.

Chief port health officer Leng Yiu-Hong said all crew members – some 1,800 people – had tested negative for coronavirus, and that everyone would be allowed to disembark without the need to self-quarantine after leaving.

On Sunday, Hong Kong’s health minister said 468 people had been ordered to stay at home, in hotel rooms or government-run centres, one day after officials implemented a mandatory two-week quarantine period for anyone arriving from mainland China.

“I feel so happy,” says passenger after leaving quarantined cruise ship

In mainland China, millions of people were preparing to return to work after an extended Lunar New Year break, imposed in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. However, a high number of companies and businesses will remain closed and many people are expected to work from home.

In Hebei province, which surrounds the capital Beijing, state media reported schools would remain shut until at least 1 March, while many parts of Hubei province remain on lockdown. Other areas are under severe travel and gathering restrictions.

    What else is happening?

Several more cases were confirmed on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has been in quarantine in the Japanese city of Yokohama for nearly a week, the Kyodo news agency reports. Authorities said on Saturday 64 people had been infected on the ship, which is carrying some 3,700 passengers and crew.

On Saturday, the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the virus was still concentrated in Hubei, and that it appeared that the number of cases had stabilised slightly over the previous four days.

Dr Tedros, who previously praised the Chinese government for its measures at the epicentre of the outbreak, reiterated that the slowdown was “an opportunity” to contain the virus.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, China’s ambassador to the UK said it was still “very difficult to predict when we’re going to have an inflection point”, but that the “isolation and quarantine measures have been very effective”.

Liu Xiaoming called the disease “the enemy of mankind”, but said it was “controllable, preventable, curable” and told people not to panic.

The BBC’s online health editor on what we know about the virus

Meanwhile, concerns were growing about the whereabouts of Chinese lawyer and blogger Chen Qiushi, who had posted online videos including of conditions inside hospitals and people queuing up for masks in Wuhan, in Hubei province. Mr Chen, whose content was being widely shared, has been missing since Thursday.

There are unconfirmed reports that he may have been forced into quarantine. In an interview with the BBC last week, he said he was not sure how long he would be allowed to continue to report on the outbreak, saying: “The censorship is so strict, people’s accounts are being closed down if they share my content”.

His disappearance comes amid widespread anger and grief across China over the death of Li Wenliang, a doctor who tried to warn fellow medics about the virus in December but was told by police to “stop making false comments” and investigated for “spreading rumours”.

China has been criticised for its initial handling of the outbreak and accused of trying, in some cases, to keep news of it secret. But Ambassador Liu put the blame of Dr Li’s case on local authorities, saying: “[Dr Li] will be remembered as a hero… and for his brave contribution”.

Last month, the WHO declared a global health emergency over the new outbreak. Of the two deaths reported outside China, one was in Hong Kong and the other in the Philippines.

  • Coronavirus kills 97 in deadliest day so far

The number of people killed by the new coronavirus rose by 97 on Sunday, the highest number of casualties in a day.

The total number of deaths in China is now 908 – but the number of newly-infected people per day has stabilised.

Across China, 40,171 people are infected while 187,518 are under medical observation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent a team of experts to Beijing to help investigate the new virus.

According to Chinese data, 3,281 patients have been cured and discharged from hospital.

On Monday, millions of people returned to work after the Lunar New Year break, which was extended from 31 January to curb the spread of the virus.

But precautionary measures remain in place, including the staggering of working hours, and the selective reopening of workplaces.

Over the weekend, the number of coronavirus deaths overtook that of the Sars epidemic in 2003 which also originated in China and killed 774 people worldwide.

The WHO on Saturday said the number of new cases in China was “stabilising” – but warned it was too early to say if the virus had peaked.

On Sunday evening, the organisation sent an international mission to help coordinate a response to the outbreak.

The new virus was first reported in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province. The city of 11 million has been in lockdown for weeks.

The outbreak was declared a global emergency by the WHO on 30 January.

Coronavirus: Shanghai’s deserted streets and metro

It has spread to at least 27 other countries and territories, but so far there have only been two deaths outside of mainland China, in the Philippines and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, passengers on a quarantined cruise ship have been allowed to disembark after tests showed no infection among them or its crew.

The World Dream had been held in isolation after eight passengers from a previous cruise had caught the virus.

Another cruise ship off Japan remains in quarantine after dozens of cases were confirmed on board.

South Korea has issued a temporary ban on cruise ships entering its ports due to fears of spreading the virus.

  • Pep yet to think about summer revamp

Pep Guardiola claims he has not given much thought about revamping Manchester City’s squad this summer.

City are expected to make some changes for next term after a disappointing Premier League title defence this season.

Guardiola’s side, who began the campaign with hopes of winning a third successive league crown, trail current leaders Liverpool by 22 points.

Guardiola said: “I don’t know. I have an idea but not even had contact from anyone in terms of that because, during the season, I am not too much ready to think about that.

“Of course we have to do something because David (Silva) is leaving and in some positions we are going to do it, but I don’t know how many or how much because the market is always difficult and still there are two or three months, and two or three months can change a lot of things.

“There are incredible nice things still to fight for. We are in a final in two or three weeks to win one more title and we have the FA Cup, the league to try and finish second in and fight for qualification for the Champions League next season, and two big games against Real Madrid.”

Guardiola’s own long-term future is unclear. The Spaniard is contracted only to the end of next season and there has been speculation he could leave even sooner.

The Spaniard, however, insists his situation will have little bearing on players when they consider whether to join City or not.

He said: “That’s not the only reason they come here – because I am here. We have been in contact with others who didn’t come when I was here.

“I think the club is big enough and good enough to be attractive for players who want to play in the way we do, or they watch TV and see us and we have played against them.

  • Global shipping has been hit by the coronavirus. Now goods are getting stranded

Shipping companies that carry goods from China to the rest of the world say they are reducing the number of seaborne vessels, as measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus crimp demand for their services and threaten to disrupt global supply chains.

About 80% of world goods trade by volume is carried by sea and China is home to seven of the world’s 10 busiest container ports, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Nearby Singapore and South Korea each have a mega port too.

“A closure of the world’s manufacturing hub impacts container shipping at large, as it is a vital facilitator of the intra-Asian and global supply chains,” said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at BIMCO, an international shipping association. “This will affect many industries and limit demand for containerized goods transport,” Sand told CNN Business.

Everything from cars and machinery to apparel and other consumer staples are shipped in containers, and disruption to the industry could reverberate far beyond China as the country seeks to contain the coronavirus outbreak by keeping factories shut and workers at home.

The longer the health crisis lasts, the harder it will be to move goods around the world. The coronavirus outbreak has killed more than 560 people and infected at least 28,000 — mainly in China, where close to 60 million people are living in cities on lockdown. Already, carmaker Hyundai (HYMTF) has suspended production at its plants in South Korea because of a disruption to the supply of parts caused by the coronavirus outbreak in China, the company said in a statement.

    Floating quarantine

The shutdowns mean that some ships can’t get into Chinese ports, as the loading and discharging of goods slows, said Guy Platten, secretary-general of the International Chamber of Shipping, a trade body. Others are stuck in dock, waiting for workers to return to ports so that construction and repairs can be completed, Platten added.

Still more vessels are idling in “floating quarantined zones,” as countries such as Australia and Singapore refuse to allow ships that have called at Chinese ports to enter their own until the crew has been declared virus-free, added Sand. Platten said he knew of at least one crew that is running low on food because their ship has been idled for so long.

Giant shipping companies such as Maersk, MSC Mediterranean Shipping, Hapag-Lloyd and CMA-CGM have said that they have reduced the number of vessels on routes connecting China and Hong Kong with India, Canada, the United States and West Africa.

The shipowners say that moves to idle Chinese factories beyond the end of the Lunar New Year has curtailed demand for vessels and forced them to adjust their capacity during what is already a low season for shipping because of the Chinese holiday.

BIMCO members, which include 1,900 shipowners, operators, managers, brokers and agents, report limited or no demand from Chinese buyers of seaborne commodities, such as coal, crude oil and iron ore, said Sand. The lack of activity is reflected in oil prices, which have crashed into a bear market.

Logistics company Freightos warned clients to expect delays in getting goods out of China, and consider shifting some shipments from sea to air or even sourcing goods from other countries where possible. The backlog of shipments that typically follows the Lunar New Year will be made worse by the current situation, pushing ocean freight rates up and exacerbating delays, Freightos said.

    Air cargo disrupted

It’s not just shipping that’s been affected. IAG Cargo, the air cargo arm of British Airways parent IAG (ICAGY), on Monday canceled all services to and from mainland China for at least the remainder of the month, citing a UK government travel advisory, according to a statement on its website.

German logistics group DHL has reported “severe disruptions to inbound and outbound air cargo shipments, trucking and rail cargo services.” The lockdowns could have a “major impact on supply chain operations and industrial production” in China across industries such as automotive, pharmaceutical and medical supplies, and high-tech manufacturing, it said in a report.

DHL has suspended deliveries in Hubei province, the epicenter of the virus, but said it doesn’t foresee other changes to its operations. UPS (UPS) and FedEx Express (FDX) said they continue to fly into and out of China. UPS said it has seen reduced demand for its services as a result of business closures.

  • Coronavirus deaths exceed Sars fatalities in 2003

The number of coronavirus deaths has overtaken that of the Sars epidemic in 2003.

In China’s Hubei province alone, the epicentre of the latest outbreak, the death toll now is put at 780 by regional health officials.

All but one of the overall total of 803 deaths have so far been in mainland China and Hong Kong.

In 2003, 774 people were killed by Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in more than two dozen countries.

More than 34,800 people have been infected with the new coronavirus worldwide, the vast majority in China.

Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency over the new outbreak.

In its latest bulletin, health officials in Hubei reported 81 new fatalities on Saturday, bringing the death toll in the region to 780.

There now have been 802 deaths in China and Hong Kong and one abroad, in the Philippines.

The new virus, 2019-nCov, was first reported in Hubei’s capital of Wuhan, and the sprawling city has been in lockdown for weeks.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong has implemented a mandatory two-week quarantine period for anyone arriving from mainland China. Visitors are being told to isolate themselves in hotel rooms or government-run centres, while residents are required to stay in their homes.

Flouting the new rules will be punishable with a fine and a prison sentence. There have been 26 confirmed cases of the virus in Hong Kong.

On Thursday, a 60-year-old US citizen – the first confirmed non-Chinese victim of the illness – died in Wuhan’s Jinyintan Hospital.

On Saturday, France confirmed five new cases in its Haute-Savoie region, including a nine-year-old boy, which brings the total of infected people in the country to 11.

French Health Minister Agnès Buzyn said all of the five new cases were British nationals staying in the same chalet, which had also housed a Briton who had been in Singapore. Their condition is not said to be serious. A further six people who stayed at the chalet are under observation.

There has also been widespread anger and grief across China over the death of Li Wenliang, a doctor who tried to warn about the new coronavirus. He contracted the virus while treating patients in Wuhan, in Hubei province.

  • Ten passengers on cruise ship test positive for virus

At least 10 people on board a cruise ship docked in the Japanese port of Yokohama have tested positive for coronavirus, health authorities said.

Almost 300 of the 3,700 people on the Diamond Princess have been tested so far. The number of infected could rise as testing continues.

The checks began after an 80-year-old Hong Kong man who had been on the ship last month fell ill with the virus.

All 10 cases are in those over the age of 50, Japanese broadcaster NHK said.

Four are in their 50s, four are in their 60s, one is in their 70s, and another one is in their 80s. Two of them are said to be Japanese, and none are in “serious condition”, NHK said.

Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said the confirmed cases were among 31 results from 273 people tested so far.

“We had them [the ones who tested positive] get off the vessel and… we are sending them to medical organisations,” he said at a news conference on Wednesday.

How did the virus get on board? In China alone, there are now more than 24,300 cases of the virus, with the death toll at 490.

There is a much smaller number of cases in other countries around the globe two people outside of mainland China have died of the disease.

The Hong Kong man believed to be the source boarded the cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan, on 20 January, and disembarked in Hong Kong on 25 January. He was only later found to have tested positive for the virus.

Officials on the cruise ship began screening guests on Monday evening, and the vessel was placed under quarantine on Tuesday.

What happens to the passengers now? Passengers and crew on the ship will now be under quarantine for 14 days. The incubation period of the virus is believed to be around two weeks.

“We are now officially in quarantine. We are to remain on board the ship and we are confined to our cabins,” a British passenger identified as Mr Abel told the Press Association news agency.

Another passenger said her mother, who is in her 80s, was running out of medicine.

“We are in trouble because [her] medicine is running out. Many of the passengers are old and some are as troubled as we are,” she told NHK.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship is part of the Princess Cruises line, owned by British-American cruise operator Carnival Corporation.

There are now 20 confirmed coronavirus cases in Japan, excluding the cruise ship infections.

Separately on Wednesday, 1,800 passengers onboard a cruise ship docked in Hong Kong are also being tested for the virus.

Local media reports say that three Chinese passengers who had spent time on the ship tested positive for the virus after disembarking.

The infected passengers were on the ship between 19 to 24 January. Hong Kong health officials say none of those on board had contact with the three passengers.

Some 30 crew members of the cruise liner say they are suffering symptoms of the virus and are also being tested.

Last week, more than 6,000 people onboard a cruise ship in an Italian port were put on lockdown over fears that a Chinese passenger could be carrying the virus.

The passenger later tested negative for coronavirus.

  • 5-year-old girl raped in grounds of US embassy in New Delhi

A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl in the grounds of the US Embassy in New Delhi, according to police.

The girl was playing outside the embassy’s staff quarters on Saturday before she “was lured and raped by a neighbor,” Eish Singhal, deputy commissioner of Delhi police, told CNN.

The girl, who is the daughter of a housekeeper employed by the embassy, later identified the 25-year-old male suspect, who has been arrested and charged with rape, police said.

“She was able to identify him point blank and there is no doubt over this,” Singhal said, adding that the suspect remains in custody.

The incident has appalled embassy staff. In a statement to CNN, a US Embassy spokesperson said “we were deeply disturbed by the alleged misconduct.”

“We promptly took action when we were informed of the allegation, and brought this matter to the attention of the police. Of course, we are cooperating fully with them,” the spokesperson said.

An investigation has been launched, and a court date has yet to be set.

In the wake of a brutal 2012 Delhi gang rape — which brought worldwide condemnation and still haunts the collective memory of women in India’s capital — lawmakers passed a series of amendments to the existing rape laws.

The amended law lengthened prison terms and introduced the death penalty in cases in which the victim is younger than 12 years of age.

In 2018, more than 33,000 cases of alleged rape were reported — roughly 91 cases each day, according to India’s National Crime Records Bureau — but experts say the real number is likely much higher, owing to the shame attached to sexual assault and the social barriers faced by victims.

  • Coronavirus: Gabon bans entry of passengers from China

Gabon announced on Friday that it was suspending access to its territory for all passengers from China in an attempt to prevent any contamination by the coronavirus.

“To date, no suspicious or reported cases have been recorded on the national territory,” the Gabonese government said in a statement. “However, in view of the spread of this epidemic beyond the epicentre, the government has decided to raise the level of surveillance and to suspend, until further notice, the access to the national territory of any passenger coming from China.

Such a ban is likely to affect the Gabonese economy because thousands of Chinese work in this Central African country, particularly in oil, mineral and timber exploitation, on which its revenues depend heavily, as well as in construction and public works.

  • #MyValentine: When God throws a woman on your table

On our wedding day, my husband was asked, “Where and how did you meet your wife?” He looked at my face with this broad grin. I told him, “You better don’t say, or I’ll kill you.” How we met is a story too far. We hardly talk about it. It’s our secret.

So when he took the mic he said, “How the two of us met was a miracle. It’s God’s way of throwing a woman on your table with the inscription; “This one is for you.” She appeared from nowhere and I immediately knew she was the one.”

Everything he said was a lie except the table part. I appeared on his table but I don’t think it was God who threw me there.

It was a week before Valentine. I had a date with a guy I met on Facebook. We had been online friends for a couple of months and had fallen in love with each other but yet to meet in person. He was in Australia and I was in Ghana. He came to Ghana that February and I were supposed to meet him on Valentine’s day.

I wanted our first date together to be perfect. I wanted to present a perfect me to him on that very day so I went to see a gynecologist. There was this condition I wanted to heal before meeting him.

They directed me to a room. A nurse came and got me prepared for the gyne to attend to me. I was lying on the table naked, hoping to see a lady gyne to attend to me. Then I heard a voice, “How are you, lady?” I got frozen. “A guy? A gyne who is a guy?”

I was shy and I was embarrassed but he did all he could to put me at ease. He asked questions with this care in his voice. He made some jokes to make me smile and be less tense. He said, “Everything should be fine but you should visit again in the next six days.”

The next six days was Valentine’s day. It was the day I was meeting my special one. So I asked him, “Couldn’t it be earlier? I would be traveling on the 14th.” Then he said, “The next six days is 14th? Wow. You’re traveling for Val’s day celebration, right?” He smiled and I smiled back.

I returned the early morning of the 14th of February. He checked on me and prescribed some medications. He said, “Don’t have sex until these drugs are finished. You should be fine after that.”

I went home, took some of the drugs and started reacting badly. I couldn’t breathe well and I started sweating profusely. So I rushed back to the hospital again. After checking on me he said, “You need to rest here for a while. I need to ensure you’re alright before you leave.”

I spent the rest of my day at the clinic. When I was leaving in the evening he said, “Go home and have a good night’s sleep but in case there’s any challenge, here you are (he handed me a sheet), call my number.”

I opened the sheet of paper on my way home. There was a number and a message; “Sorry to mess up your Valentine’s day. There’s more to come. Happy Val’s day.”

Indeed my Val’s day was messed up. I couldn’t meet my online boyfriend. I told him I was sick. I told him I was reacting to a drug a doctor gave me so I couldn’t meet him. He thought I was making excuses not to see him. He got angry. He said a lot of annoying stuff and hung up on me. That was the end. He never picked my calls but my health was very important.

Any slightest sign of discomfort got me calling gyne to complain. He was Charles.

“Charles, why am I having rashes here and there?”

“Charles, is it normal for me to feel dizzy after taking this drug?”

“Charles, I think I’m getting better but is there anything I should do so I don’t experience this and that again?”

He was kind. He was considerate. He tolerated all my nuisance and stupid questions even at odd hours. It became the norm. We were always on the phone talking or chatting. Our conversations moved from my health to other areas of our lives; upbringing, profession, love, disappointment and what have you. One night, he proposed and I said yes.

Love took over. Close to two years after dating, we got married. So on our wedding day when he said God threw me on his table, that wasn’t a lie. I was that girl who was lying naked on his table that day and he was that guy looking through me to find what was wrong with me but he couldn’t say that. It would have been too much information.

  • Cure for HIV/AIDS found, human trials to start soon as scientists successfully cure monkeys

There appears to be some refreshing news amidst the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus as scientists have successfully cured monkeys and mice of HIV/AIDS in an attempt to find a lasting cure for the disease that has killed many and continue to infect thousands worldwide.

A joint effort between researchers from the University of North Carolina, Emory University, and Qura Therapeutics resulted in what many have described as a breakthrough in HIV/AIDS research.

The UNC Cure Center discovered a method of identifying and reactivating dormant cells that can be combined with other clearance strategies in order to clear the HIV reservoir that will end in a definitive, permanent cure.

With this breakthrough, scientists continue to search for an effective cure for the HIV virus for humans, one that will not produce any side-effects.

HIV/AIDS continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 32 million lives according to WHO.

There were approximately 37.9 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018 according to WHO

As a result of concerted international efforts to respond to HIV, coverage of services has been steadily increasing. A WHO report notes that in 2018, 62% of adults and 54% of children living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries were receiving lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART).

  • A.B.A Fuseini reveals how NPP MPs grabbed share of missing loot

MP for Sagnarigu Constituency, A.B.A Fuseini, has made a startling revelation that members of the Majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament participated in the sharing of the missing excavators and vehicles.

According to him, some NPP MPs received some of the looted vehicles and equipment that went missing from government custody.

He alleged that the member for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, was among the NPP MPs that benefited from the loot.

Speaking in an interview, he quoted an executive member of the Small Scale Miners Association, one Kwame Agyeman, who he said had disclosed the confiscated equipment included Pick-ups, SUVs and other utility vehicles.

“These have also been distributed like toffee to NPP Apparatchiks,” he said.

He named a classical example of one of the beneficiaries of the loot as Mrs. Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

According to the legislator, Kwame Agyeman disclosed that one of his vehicles was wrongly confiscated and he went to court and the court gave an order that the vehicle be returned to him.

“He went to Prof. Frimpong Boateng, Minister for Environment and he told him that some vehicles have been distributed he should therefore go and check including from the Ayawaso West Wuogon MP.”

“Four vehicles were given to her and see whether his vehicle was one of them.”

“He said it today. So you can see the looting is not only excavators. It also includes utility vehicles,” he said.

“In our case from the northern part of the country, the noise the NPP made about Guinea fowls flying to Burkina Faso. We heard that. Indeed it came out that even there was no such story.”

“But granting without admitting that Guinea fowls fly, is it news? What about Aboboyaa. 700 tricycles, Aboboyaa and 600 motorbikes, all developed wings and flew out of the Northern Development Authority (NDA) office in Tamale.”

  • Children inherit their intelligence from their mother not their father, say scientists

A mother’s genetics determines how clever her children are, according to researchers, and the father makes no difference.

Women are more likely to transmit intelligence genes to their children because they are carried on the X chromosome and women have two of these, while men only have one.

But in addition to this, scientists now believe genes for advanced cognitive functions which are inherited from the father may be automatically deactivated.

A category of genes known as “conditioned genes” are thought to work only if they come from the mother in some cases and the father in other cases. Intelligence is believed to be among the conditioned genes that have to come from the mother.

Laboratory studies using genetically modified mice found that those with an extra dose of maternal genes developed bigger heads and brains, but had little bodies. Those with an extra dose of paternal genes had small brains and larger bodies.

Researchers identified cells that contained only maternal or paternal genes in six different parts of the mouse brains which controlled different cognitive functions, from eating habits to memory.

Cells with paternal genes accumulated in parts of the limbic system, which is involved in functions such as sex, food and aggression. But researchers did not find any paternal cells in the cerebral cortex, which is where the most advanced cognitive functions take place, such as reasoning, thought, language and planning.

Concerned that people might not be like mice, researchers in Glasgow took a more human approach to exploring intelligence. They found the theories extrapolated from mice studies bear out in reality when they interviewed 12,686 young people between the ages of 14 and 22 every year from 1994. Despite taking into account several factors, from the participants education to their race and socio-economic status, the team still found the best predictor of intelligence was the IQ of the mother.

However, research also makes it clear that genetics are not the only determinant of intelligence – only 40 to 60 per cent of intelligence is estimated to be hereditary, leaving a similar chunk dependent on the environment.

But mothers have also been found to play an extremely significant role in this non-genetic part of intelligence, with some studies suggesting a secure bond between mother and child is intimately tied to intelligence.

Researchers at the University of Washington found that a secure emotional bond between a mother and child is crucial for the growth of some parts of the brain. After analysing the way a group of mothers related to their children for seven years, the researchers found children who were supported emotionally and had their intellectual needs fulfilled had a 10 per cent larger hippocampus at 13 on average than children whose mothers were emotionally distant. The hippocampus is an area of the brain associated with memory, learning and stress response.

A strong bond with the mother is thought to give a child a sense of security which allows them to explore the world, and the confidence to solve problems. In addition, devoted, attentive mothers tend to help children solve problems, further helping them to reach their potential.

Of course, there’s no reason why fathers can’t play as big a nurture role as mothers. And researchers point out that a whole array of other gene determined traits – like intuiton and emotions - which can be inherited from the father are also key to unlocking potential intelligence, so fathers - don’t despair.

  • Trump fires two impeachment witnesses

US President Donald Trump has dismissed two senior officials who testified against him at his impeachment trial.

The US envoy to the EU, Gordon Sondland, said he “was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately”.

Just hours earlier, Lt Col Alexander Vindman, a top expert on Ukraine, was escorted from the White House.

Mr Trump is said to desire a staff shake-up after senators cleared him in the impeachment case on Wednesday.

In its historic vote, the Senate decided not to remove America’s 45th president from office on charges arising from his dealings with Ukraine.

Lt Col Vindman’s twin brother, Yevgeny Vindman, a senior lawyer for the National Security Council, was also sent back to the Department of the Army on Friday.

    What about Mr Sondland’s recall?

In a statement issued by his lawyer, Mr Sondland said: “I was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately as United States ambassador to the European Union.

“I am grateful to President Trump for having given me the opportunity to serve, to Secretary [of State Mike] Pompeo for his consistent support, and to the exceptional and dedicated professionals at the US mission to the European Union.

EU ambassador Gordon Sondland testifies that Trump’s personal lawyer “requests were a quid pro quo”

“I am proud of our accomplishments. Our work here has been the highlight of my career,” Mr Sondland said.

    And how was Vindman removed?

Lt Col Vindman’s counsel, David Pressman, told the BBC his client had been “escorted out of the White House where he has dutifully served his country and his president”.

“There is no question in the mind of any American why this man’s job is over, why this country now has one less soldier serving it at the White House,” said the statement.

“LTC Vindman was asked to leave for telling the truth. His honour, his commitment to right, frightened the powerful.”

  • Ancelotti’s big Liverpool title fear

Manager Carlo Ancelotti says he is hoping Everton will not have to watch local rivals Liverpool clinch the Premier League title at their Goodison Park home.

With Liverpool 22 points clear at the top of the table, thoughts have turned to when they could clinch a first title in 30 years.

If Liverpool keep winning, Manchester City drop three points, and Leicester drop any points between now and the Merseyside derby, Jurgen Klopp’s side can potentially claim the title at Goodison Park on March 16, live on Sky Sports.

Asked what he thought of that prospect, Ancelotti said on Friday, ahead of Saturday’s match against Crystal Palace: “The thought is that Liverpool is going to win the Premier League – I hope not at Goodison Park!

“There are a lot of stadiums, why in Goodison?”

But former Liverpool striker Ian Rush was unsurprisingly more interested in the possibility of a title celebration at the home of one of their greatest rivals.

“I think it would go down well for the Liverpool supporters – I’m not sure about the Everton supporters,” Rush told Sky Sports.

“It would be nice to win it on Merseyside but I would like it to be at Anfield.

“But, if it’s going to be at Goodison Park, I don’t think any Liverpool supporters would be angry with that.

“One thing for sure is that Everton will be trying to make certain they don’t win it there, so that will be a really entertaining game.”

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes may yet play in the derby in March.

Gomes could make a comeback from a fracture dislocation of his ankle when Everton play Arsenal later this month.

The Portugal international sustained an horrific injury against Tottenham on November 3 but has made such rapid progress there are plans in place for him to feature in a friendly to test his fitness ahead of the team’s return to action after the mid-season break.

“We are going to organise a friendly game for us when we come back from the holidays and everything is OK with him,” said Ancelotti.

  • Mourinho shaves his head and Tottenham fans have reason to be excited

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has shaved his head, which could give their fans reason for optimism.

Mourinho went to luxury barbers Haks Oscar on King’s Road in Chelsea for his trim and a picture posted on Instagram showed off his startling new look.

It isn’t the first time that Mourinho has shaved his head, and he has a very good record when he has chosen to do so.

For instance in the 2006-07 campaign, Chelsea won nine of their first eleven league matches after Mourinho went for a similar hairstyle.

In the 2013-14 season, when he was back at Chelsea, Mourinho used Fernando Torres’ clippers to cut his hair and the Blues subsequently won eight of their next 10 league games.

Tottenham will now be hoping to benefit when they face Aston Villa away on February 16.

Mourinho has won 10, drawn four and lost five of his 19 matches in charge of Tottenham so far.

This week Mourinho guided his side into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory over Southampton in a fourth round replay.

  • Hearts of Oak endures worst home run since 1993/1994 season

Hearts of Oak were held to a goalless draw by Ashanti Gold on matchday 8 of the Ghana Premier to witness their worst home run in the Ghanaian topflight league.

The Phobians have won just a game from four home league matches this season and have secured just four points from a possible 12.

They lost at home on matchday 1 against Berekum Chelsea, won against Ebusua Dwarfs, before they were edged by their bitterest rivals Asante Kotoko and on matchday 8 they were held to a goalless draw by AshGold

Hearts of Oak have never played four home league games and amassed just four points from a possible 12.

Hearts worst home run before this season had been five (5) points from a possible 12.

Meanwhile AshGold after holding Hearts of Oak to a goalless draw have gone four consecutive league games in Accra against the Phobians without a defeat (W1, D3). If the 1-3 win the Miners had over Hearts in Accra in the aborted 2018 Ghana Premier League is included then it will be five games without a win for Hearts against the Obuasi lads.

Hearts last defeated AshGold in Accra in 2014.

  • The Nigerian royal who loved to lampoon modern life

Nigerian author Chukwuemeka Ike, who died last month at the age of 88, helped define Nigerian culture, but never received the international acclaim he deserved, writes the BBC’s Nduka Orjinmo in Lagos.

Ike will be remembered for his novels but his legacy will also live on in an important word in Nigeria’s lexicon.

Say “expo” to anyone here and they immediately know what you are talking about – exam malpractice.

Ike helped popularise the term when he penned Expo 77, a novel based on the true story of how top secret school-leaving exam papers were leaked twice in 1977.

Ironically, he was in charge of the exam board when the leaks happened, and chose to vent his frustration about the way society encouraged malpractice – from parents to students to school administrators – through his literary work.

His writing gave voice both to contemporary concerns and also to a defence of African – and more specifically his Igbo – culture.

While the literary themes of the time were focused on the conflict that existed between the West and Africa, he was one of the earliest writers to capture the tide of the emerging cosmopolitan Nigeria.

He did not just excavate the ethos of Africa from bygone times, he also reflected the present: bringing to life everyone from the politicians to the prostitutes, and prophesied the palavers that were to come.

    Morphing into a leopard

He was satirical, lampooning institutions with humour that was acerbic and he enjoyed it. He poked fun at the foibles of modern Nigeria.

In Toads for Supper, his first book, he dealt with the theme of love in a beautifully humorous way that exposed the tensions in multi-ethnic Nigeria.

Set in a Nigerian university in the west of Africa’s most-populous state, it tells the story of a new student, Amadi, who is the first to go to university from his village in eastern Nigeria.

Igbo men at a ceremony in Ohafia
Ike celebrated Igbo culture in his work but also described the changes in modern Nigeria

The book captured what it meant to be an Igbo student in western Nigeria before the civil war, sparked by the creation of a breakaway Igbo state, Biafra, in 1967.

Ike responded to the civil war – a defining period of Nigeria’s history – with Sunset at Dawn.

He would later try to distinguish between Biafra and Biafranism. He described the latter as representative of “those things that made us great in Biafra”.

But in the book, he described the tragedy that unfolded through Fatima who is fleeing enemy planes with her young son.

In the magical-realist Bottled Leopard, he managed to hold a generation spellbound. It was no doubt helped by the fact that the book was compulsory reading for secondary school students studying literature.

It is the story of a schoolboy who has been chosen by his ancestors to bear the mystical power of his lineage: the power to morph into a leopard.

Most people see Bottled Leopard as Ike’s defining work, but this could be down to the fact that it was forced on a generation of readers.

    Achebe’s influence

Born into a royal family in the eastern part of Nigeria, Ike was a student at the famous Government College Umuahia, a breeding ground for the country’s finest post-colonial writers.

Literary icon Chinua Achebe was his senior at the school and Ike once told an interviewer that Achebe had inspired his writing.

“In fact, I never thought of writing novels until Chinua Achebe published his Things Fall Apart in 1958,” he said.

    Books by Ike

Maybe it was not such a good thing to be an Igbo writer in the same generation as Achebe.

Some believe this short-changed Ike and that his writing deserved a larger audience.

The same could be said of the other gifted Nigerian writers of that generation: Cyprian Ekwensi, Mabel Segun and Elechi Amadi. Their brilliance seems to have been overshadowed by literary giants such as Achebe and Wole Soyinka.

It was a generation of writers that had the difficult task of transferring oral aspects of indigenous languages into loose English translations with sometimes inchoate outcomes.

    Two women in a market
Chukwuemeka Ike captured the patterns of speech in multilingual Nigeria

It is in this regard that Ike’s legacy cannot be denied, his place in literature stands as tall as the others.

For he more than most, succinctly captured the conversation style of a people in a multi-ethnic, multilingual nation.

He reflected their ability to switch from simple English, to bombast, to peer-group slang, to pidgin English and native language.

In Expo 77, a policeman’s reaction to a girl using a sanitary pad to help cheat in an exam, captured Ike’s writing style fittingly:

“‘Jesu Christi Oluwa wa!’ the assistant superintendent exclaimed. He was Yoruba. ‘Jehova Witness dem people say Armageddon go come in five year time. ‘E don’ come patapata! Olorun!’ He snapped his fingers.”

In 2008, he would go from defending his culture in the pages of a book to defending it on the throne as the king of Ndikelionwu in eastern Nigeria. He took the throne following the death of his father.

    Tackling animal sacrifice

The Ike family has ruled Ndikelionwu for decades but his people were yet to encounter one who wanted to preserve the monarchy by changing things.

In 2018, he asked his people to stop offering animal sacrifices to the land goddess Ala during the new yam festival.

Instead, he wanted a Christian thanksgiving service at the Anglican church where a front row seat was usually reserved for his family.

The writer, who spoke up for African culture in his work, and wrote about men transmuting into leopards, felt animal sacrifices should no longer be associated with his people and many of them agreed with him.

As a king, he respected the egalitarian nature of his people and was largely democratic, working with a small council to reach decisions.

They describe him as humble and the peace-maker who ruled with a firm hand.

His people say he is not dead as a king does not die, but rather goes to be with his ancestors. They refuse to speak of his death, neither do they refer to him in the past.

It is the sort of attitude that Ike may have been proud of.

This king may be dead but he lives on in his writing.

  • Lionel Messi will end career at Barcelona – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has played down suggestions that Lionel Messi could join him at Manchester City and believes the playmaker will end his glittering career at Barcelona.

Messi, 32, has spent his career with Barca but has a clause allowing him to leave for free this summer.

Guardiola coached Messi at the Nou Camp between 2008 and 2012, winning three La Ligas and two Champions Leagues.

“He will stay there (at Barca), that’s my wish,” said the Man City boss.

Guardiola left Barca for Bayern Munich having become their most successful manager, with 14 trophies in four seasons.

He went on to win three successive league titles in Germany and has won the Premier League for the last two seasons with City, although this term they trail Liverpool by 22 points with only 13 games remaining.

Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or player award six times, 10 league titles and four Champions Leagues, is under contract until 2021.

But he spoke out this week against Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal after the Frenchman accused players of not working hard under former coach Ernesto Valverde.

Barca are three points behind leaders Real Madrid in La Liga but Guardiola would not be drawn on the apparent unrest between Messi and Abidal – both former players of his – adding: “I’m not going to talk about players for other clubs.

“I think he will finish his career there, that’s my wish.”
