  • Tell Ghanaians what you know about Airbus saga Akpaloo challenges Mahama

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has challenged former President John Dramani Mahama to tell Ghanaians what he knows about the Airbus bribery saga.

It said a statement from the former President would put to rest any speculations and also clear him and the country of any blame or suspicion.

    GO1

“From 2009 to 2016, the NDC was in charge of this country. Whatever happened between that time, they are responsible. We want the former President to tell everybody who the Government Official 1 is”, the leader of the party, Mr Kofi Akpaloo, said at a press conference in Accra today.

“Now when you mention Ghana anywhere around the world, people associate it with bribery and corruption. Former President Mahama needs to help us fight it by addressing this issue,” he added.

According to him, the €35 million involved in the purchase of the aircraft as at that time was equivalent to $40 million and asked, “why should we spend $40million to buy an aircraft that was selling at $25 million?”

He advised that the best thing the country had to do was to retrieve the extra $15 million on each aircraft.

    Background

Airbus, the European aircraft manufacturer, is alleged to have paid bribes in Ghana when it sold the three military aircraft to the country.

The company admitted hiring the brother of a top elected Ghanaian official as its consultant in the sale of the aircraft.

Also, Airbus confessed paying the said consultant through a third party when its Compliance Unit raised red flags about the close relationship between the consultant and the top elected official who was a key decision maker in the purchase of the military aircraft.

    Response from the NDC

But, in a riposte, a statement signed by a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in the immediate past NDC administration, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, said the reports alleging that Airbus SE paid bribes during the administration of President John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama were “false, misleading and do not reflect the approved judgement” by the UK court.

  • Legon Cities pip Elmina Sharks

A solitary strike from Abdul Karim Jabila was enough to secure all maximum points for Legon Cities who edged Elmina Sharks in a fascinating encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

It was the second win for Legon Cities this season as they moved up 12th on the league table.

The away side started the game on the front foot creating some decent chances.

Elmina Sharks winger Mustapha Alhaji should have opened the scoring for the away side but goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda delivered a fantastic save to keep the scores level.

Legon Cities responded very well from the earlier pressure, playing some beautiful football, but failed to create any decent chances.

The game lacked the need to spark with too many fouls committed by either side.

Degorl Jeffery nearly put the home side in front with his strike from 30 yards, but Sharks goalkeeper Essam Joseph tipped the ball off the crossbar in spectacular fashion.

The game went into recess scoreless.

Legon Cities started the second half on a bright note with some good early chances but the Elmina Sharks defence stood firm.

Substitute Yakubu Mohammed of Legon Cities should have scored from five yards after Abdul Karim cross found him in the penalty box but his eventual header went wide.

Elmina Sharks deployed the counter-attacking system as they look to hit the home side on the break.

Legon Cities were awarded a penalty on 88th minute as Abdul Karim stepped up and struck Legon Cities in-front.

Legon Cities held on to secure all three points.

  • Missing excavators drama sign of grave confusion Ken Ashigbey

Lead campaigner of the Media Coalition against illegal mining, Ken Ashigbey has raised concerns over the circumstances that led to the controversial disappearance of excavators and other seized equipment from illegal miners in the country.

He believes that the inability of the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, to even provide the exact number of the missing excavators is a clear indication of his [Minister] total loss of control of his core mandate.

On the Point of View on Wednesday, the media advocate in the fight against illegal mining was worried and expressed regret at the current turn of events.

Mr. Ashigbey, therefore, implored the government to tackle the issue with the highest form of seriousness and take decisive steps to prove its commitment to settle the saga.

“My pain is hearing the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial committee say that the excavators are missing. He said it in a way suggesting that nothing else was being done. It had to take a statement that was issued before we realized that all these actions were being taken. The very roadmap on illegal mining had mentioned that excavators were going to be registered, carted and tagged so for me, the inter-ministerial committee should take the issue of the missing excavators very seriously. The Minister did not even tell us what the number of the missing excavators was so definitely for me, I realized at that point that, we were missing the plot.”

    Missing excavators and arrest

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology & Innovation and also Chairperson for the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), disclosed recently that most of the excavators that were seized from illegal miners had vanished.

He subsequently petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the suspended First Vice Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, Horace Ekow Ewusi over his alleged involvement in the missing earth-moving equipment.

Ekow Ewusi was contracted by the government to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safekeeping.

So far, six persons arrested over the disappearance of the missing equipment been granted bail.

The six, including Ekow Ewusi, have been cautioned with the offence of stealing and abetment to stealing.

    Past history

It will be recalled that, at the peak of the fight against illegal mining between 2017 and 2018, about five hundred earth-moving machines were seized by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry.

The then sector Minister, John Peter Amewu who sanctioned the seizure directed them to be parked at the premises of the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

  • Kevin Prince Boateng most talented player I have shared pitch with – Hoeness

Sebastian Hoeness has paid tribute to his former team-mate Kevin-Prince Boateng, affirming that the former Ghana international played better than any other footballer with whom he shared a pitch.

Now 32, the versatile forward moved to Turkey with Besiktas during the January transfer window, his 11th club since leaving Hertha for Spurs in 2007.

And while Kevin Boateng has found it difficult to settle at any one team over the years, Hoeness cannot help but admire his talent.

“I’ve never been on the pitch with a more talented player. He was exceptional in the overall package and was already a crazy man at the time, extremely confident,” he told Goal.

“He didn’t care about anything that would have given him a bloody nose or two.

“But that was one of his great strengths. He knew what he could do and took responsibility.”

Five years Boateng’s senior, Hoeness also revealed the advice he gave his young team-mate when he was just beginning to emerge through the Hertha ranks.

“I was a few years older than him. I remember how I said to him once: ‘Kevin, you are not about whether you will ever become a professional, play in front of many spectators and make a lot of money, it’s all about whether you win titles or just play along’.” Hoeness added.

“In the beginning there was actually a risk that he would not quite make it to the top. Then it clicked and he won titles. I’m happy about that.”

Boateng has made more than 400 appearances at club level since making his senior debut for Hertha in 2005, scoring 62 goals.

He also represented Ghana, the birth nation of his father, on 15 occasions, and was included in the country’s squad for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, although he was sent home midway through the latter tournament due to disciplinary issues.
Hoeness, the nephew of Bayern Munich great and former club president Uli, is now coaching the Bavarians’ reserve team in the third tier of German football.

But in his early days as a player he shared time at Hertha Berlin with Boateng, who went on to represent the likes of Tottenham, AC Milan and Barcelona in a wandering professional career.

The 48,000 Euro-project, being funded by the German government through the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) will provide direct jobs for 150 young men and women in five communities in the two Municipalities.

The communities are Odumase, Chiraa, Fiapre and Nsoatre in Sunyani West and Kwasibourkrom in Jaman South.

The project will train beneficiaries in tiling, masonry, plumbing, tailoring, dressmaking, hairdressing, and cosmetology as a catalyst to reducing youth unemployment.

  • French football chairman charged with sexual assault

The chairman of top-flight French football club Angers was on Wednesday charged with sexual assault, a prosecutor said, in the latest scandal to rock sports in the country.

Said Chabane was detained for questioning after three employees and one former employee filed complaints against the 55-year-old, prosecutor Eric Bouillard said.

Chabane was charged with sexual assault as “a person who abuses the authority conferred on him by his role”, Bouillard added.

The investigation was opened in January after three women – one an employee of the Ligue 1 side, the other former staffers – came forward with allegations against the club’s chief.

A fourth woman, who had been identified by investigators as a potential victim, also filed a complaint on Wednesday.

The four were all aged between 20 and 25 at the time of the alleged assaults, which took place between 2014 and 2019, Bouillard said.

Some of the women allege they were caressed in a forceful way in intimate areas by Chabane.

The club had earlier issued a statement saying Chabane rejected all the allegations against him and would fully cooperate with investigators.

“He will offer the judicial authorities all the elements needed to re-establish the truth and preserve his honour,” it said.

Angers are currently placed 13th in Ligue 1.

The case comes as the sport of ice skating in France was rocked by claims from former world championship bronze medallist Sarah Abitbol that she was raped by coach Gilles Beyer from 1990 to 1992, starting when she was just 15 years old.

An investigation into those allegations has also been launched.

Beyer, 62, has admitted to having had “intimate” and “inappropriate” relations with Abitbol, and told the AFP he was “sincerely sorry”.

  • UG survey on new Voters’ Register bogus – Group

The Inter-Party Resistance against a New Voters’ Register has rejected the research by the University of Ghana Political Science department which says that 64.9% of Ghanaians want a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections.

The group which staged its third demonstration yesterday believe the findings of the research are biased and without merit.

According to them, the findings were conducted only on Akufo-Addo’s appointees, that is Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) whose ”political party is all out for a new voters register.” Adding the research was not conducted on ordinary Ghanaians to have their responses as well.

Speaking to Starr FM today, Chairman of the group Bernard Monah described the findings of new Voters Register for the 2020 elections by the University as bogus

”This is one of the most bogus research that has ever been conducted. This was a research that was conducted around December 2019 when the issue of a new voters register was not topical and therefore the pros and cons of a new Voters Register were not brought to the media and attention of the people.”

Mr Monah added that the findings are not worth consideration by any member within the Interparty Resistance against the New Voters’ Register

”This is a research that has been done just on the appointees of Nana Addo’s government, talking about MMDCEs.Obviously, MMDCE’s are all members of the NPP. Even to the extent that 21% of them indicate that they do not support a call for a new voters register should tell you if proper research was done it will not amount to this. This was a research done on the appointees of the NPP and the methodology, sample size, sample location is even questionable. The respondents are Ghanaians who are appointees of President Akufo Addo whose political party is all out for a new register. Because they are all MMDCEs, they did not go to the streets to interview ordinary Ghanaians.MMDCE’s are political appointees. No one will accept these findings in the group”.

The research by the University of Ghana was conducted in December 2019 sampled 27,500 people across the sixteen(16) regions of Ghana.

A survey conducted by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana revealed that 64.9% of Ghanaians are in favor of new voters register for the 2020 elections. According to the report, 27,500 were interviewed across the 16 regions.

However, a Political Scientist of the University of Ghana, Dr Isaac Owusu stated reasons given by the respondents for a new register, According to him they are: to remove deceased names, detect foreign names and to get a credible register.

  • Virgin Australia withdraws all flights and services to Hong Kong

The airline Virgin Australia announced today that it was withdrawing all services between Australia and Hong Kong.

The combined effect of the coronavirus outbreak and 2019 anti-government protests have led to declining business and growing uncertainty, said the airline in a statement.

The airline had previously suspended flights between Melbourne and Hong Kong, announced in November 2019 and effective from February 11. Flights between Sydney and Hong Kong will also stop running from March 2.

“Hong Kong has continued to be a challenging market,” said the airline’s chief commercial officer, John MacLeod, in the statement.
“Current circumstances demonstrate that Hong Kong is no longer a commercially viable route for Virgin Australia to continue operating, however international tourism remains an important part of our strategy through our other international routes and partner airlines.”

  • Five critical roads in UWR penciled for construction

Five roads in the Upper West Region have been scheduled for construction this year under the government’s Critical Roads Project.

    The projects included the 31km Wa-Bulenga-Yala road, the 56km Fian-Issa-Wahabu road, the 41km Wahabu-Funsi-Yala road, the 20km Wechiau-Ga road and the 22km Wa-Han road.

When completed, it will open up the Region for massive economic activity, thereby improving the lives of the people in the area.

Mr Amoako Atta, the Minister for Roads and Highways, disclosed this at a press conference proceeding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Region to cut the sod for the construction of a combined 17-megawatt solar power plant at Kaleo and Lawra in the Upper West Region.

He said the President has directed the Minister of Finance to raise special funding to fund these critical projects across the country.

He disclosed that the Upper West Region had a total road network of 3,607km out of which about 540km was paved and 344km at both gravelled and earth stages.

The Roads Minister further disclosed that 61 per cent of roads under the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) were good, 38 per cent fair and one per cent poor.

Mr Amoako Atta added that less than one per cent of roads under the Department of Feeder Roads were good, 37 per cent fair and 21 per cent poor.

Under the Department of Urban Roads, 30 per cent of its roads were considered to be good, seven per cent fair and 63 per cent poor.

Mr Amoako Atta, therefore, noted that the government’s concentration in the Region was on the Departments of Feeder and Urban Roads.

He noted therefore that the Ministry would concentrate on routine maintenance of the roads all-year-round to make the roads serviceable in all three categories.

This, they would do by ensuring that all potholes on paved roads were patched before June 2020.

He said on his way to the Region through the Damongo-Sawla-Wa road, he was amazed at the number of potholes, adding, he had since directed the Chief Executive to dispatch the Mobile Maintenance Unit to patch the potholes and they had since arrived and work had commenced.

He further directed that the team should stay until all the potholes on that stretch were patched, after which a contractor would be put on the road to do refilling so that they save the road.

Mr Amoako Atta also assured that all gravelled roads totalling about 5,200km in the Region would be graded before the onset of the rains in June 2020.

“All roadside vegetation shall be cleared and culverts and drains are desilted to improve safety and smooth flow of water during rainfall”.

  • Disney could lose $280 million because of coronavirus and Hong Kong protests

Disney has warned that profits from its parks in China could drop by $280 million in the current quarter, due to shutdowns caused by the coronavirus and a loss of business related to recent mass protests in Hong Kong.

The company added during its earnings call Tuesday that the coronavirus will hurt its results for the quarter through March and the fiscal year as a whole.

Closed businesses: Disney suspended operations at some of its facilities in China last month as the outbreak spread.

For now, the properties in Hong Kong and Shanghai are closed indefinitely, and “the precise magnitude of the financial impact is highly dependent on the duration of the closures,” chief financial officer Christine McCarthy said.

Operating income at the company’s Shanghai park could drop by about $135 million this quarter if the park remains closed for two months, she added.

  • Trump acquitted at end of months long impeachment process, found not guilty of two articles

The Senate voted to acquit President Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment Wednesday, marking the inevitable and historic end to a bitterly fought, divisive impeachment trial that will reverberate into the 2020 election and shape Trump’s presidential legacy.

But the final day of the Senate’s impeachment trial was not without suspense: Sen. Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, found the President guilty of abuse of power, becoming the first senator in US history to vote to remove from office a president from the same party.
The third Senate impeachment trial of a sitting president in US history concluded Wednesday afternoon with votes finding the President not guilty of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, the impeachment articles the House charged Trump with in December. Romney was the sole Republican to vote to convict the President on the first article of impeachment, abuse of power, joining with all Senate Democrats in a 52-48 not guilty vote. Romney voted with Republicans against the obstruction of Congress charge, which fell along straight party lines, 53-47 for acquittal.
The acquittal verdict was the final act of a four-month impeachment process that inflamed the partisan tensions simmering throughout the course of the Trump administration, friction that boiled over during the State of the Union even though Trump left impeachment out of his speech. While Wednesday’s vote marks the end of the formal impeachment process, Trump and his Democratic detractors are sure to take up the fight over the ultimate significance of the President’s impeachment as the presidential campaign heats up.

  • Tema Motorway Interchange will be completed on schedule – Project Manager

Construction works on the three-tier Tema Motorway Roundabout Interchange is progressing steadily and will be completed on schedule barring any last-minute hitch, Mr Yujin Uemura, the Project Manager, Shimizu-Dai Nippon JV has assured.

With barely four months to the deadline on 6th June, 2020, Mr Uemura said about 91 per cent of work was complete, with minor construction works such as drains and asphalting of inner roads about to start.

He gave the assurance when Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways paid a working visit to the site on Wednesday as part of his tour to some major road projects in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

The visit was to give the Minister firsthand information about the progress of work at the various road projects being undertaken by the Government.

Mr Uemura said “as at the end of January, the overall progress is about 91 per cent and then our schedule is about 90 per cent complete so we are almost on track, and our completion date is this year 6th of June, so under four months to go, we will make sure to complete by that date without any hitch.

“The main work is the remaining of the road works and we are going to start the remaining of the asphalt works soon.”

The Interchange is a $57 million project being financed under a grant from the Japanese government through its agency, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The interchange when completed will facilitate easy connection from Accra to Aflao and onwards to Togo, as well as the Akosombo road.

It forms part of the West African Corridor Development Growth and Ring Master Plan and is implemented by Messrs Shimizu-Dai Nippon Joint Venture (SDJV), a Japanese construction firm.

Mr Uemura explained that the project stalled at some levels due to their inability to access some lands allocated for the project but were occupied by squatters and therefore appealed to the Roads Minister to ensure that those issues were addressed to facilitate the completion of the project.

Briefing the Media at the end of the inspection, Mr Amoako Atta expressed satisfaction at the level of work done and urged the Project Manager to ensure that works on the remaining project were expedited.

He also urged the Manager to put in place measures to curtail any flooding that might occur in the future.

“When you look at some of our interchanges, for instance, the Kwame Nkrumah interchange, they experience flooding whenever it rains and so extra works were done to prevent the occurrences, therefore whatever it is, we must avoid the same thing happening here when the project is finally handed over to government,” he said.

Mr Amoako Atta said the government of Japan gave its approval for the commencement of the second phase of the project, and the contractor would move to site three months after the completion and handing over of the interchange project.

Other road projects inspected by the Minister included; the Teshie-Link road, the four-tier Pokuase Interchange, rehabilitation of the Ofankor-Nsawam section of the N6 and the 31.7km Kwafokrom-Apedwa in the Eastern region.

  • Nigeria: 90% of Boko Haram victims are muslims – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says 90 percent of the victims of Boko Haram are Muslims contrary to views that the group is primarily targeting Christians.

He said this in an opinion piece published in “Speaking Out” a guest opinion column for Christianity Today.

The President, in the piece titled “Buhari: Pastor Andimi’s Faith Should Inspire All Nigerians”, extolled the virtues of Pastor Lawan Andimi who was killed by Boko Haram for his refusal to denounce his Christian faith.

Buhari said: “But we may not, yet, be completely winning the battle for the truth. Christianity in Nigeria is not-as some seem intent on believing-contracting under pressure, but expanding and growing in numbers approaching half of our population today. Nor is it the case that Boko Haram is primarily targeting Christians: not all of the Chibok schoolgirls were Christians; some were Muslims, and were so at the point at which they were taken by the terrorists.

“Indeed, it is the reality that some 90 per cent of all Boko Haram’s victims have been Muslims: they include a copycat abduction of over 100 Muslim schoolgirls, along with their single Christian classmate; shootings inside mosques; and the murder of two prominent imams. Perhaps it makes for a better story should these truths, and more, be ignored in the telling.

“It is a simple fact that these now-failing terrorists have targeted the vulnerable, the religious, the non-religious, the young, and the old without discrimination. And at this point, when they are fractured, we cannot allow them to divide good Christians and good Muslims from those things that bind us all in the sight of God: faith, family, forgiveness, fidelity, and friendship to each other.

“Yet sadly, there is a tiny, if vocal, minority of religious leaders-both Muslim and Christian-who appear more than prepared to take their bait and blame the opposite religious side. The terrorists today attempt to build invisible walls between us. They have failed in their territorial ambitions, so now instead they seek to divide our state of mind, by prying us from one from another-to set one religion seemingly implacably against the other.”

The president said the action of the terror the terror group must not be viewed as evidence the terrorists were “fully functional, and undefeated” they resorted to criminal acts by targeting the innocent Nigerians having been degraded.

He called on faith leaders, and Nigerians to focus more on words of concord in their scriptures, saying “There is no place in Nigeria for those who seek to divide us by religion, who compel others to change their faith forcibly, or try to convince others that by so doing, they are doing good.”

  • B&FT Editorial: Eternal vigilance should be the watchword

Health Minister Kweku Agyeman Manu, on Tuesday 4 February 2020, addressed Parliament and revealed that government has allocated GHC2.5million as a start-up to fund to fight the Corona Virus.

This proves that government is not leaving anything to chance, and this should send signals of confidence Ghanaians that despite not recording any symptoms of the virus yet, preparations are being put in place. The Ministry of Health has therefore initiated the process to procure 10,000 pieces of personal protective equipment for the use of all our frontline health workers, Mr. Agyeman-Manu told lawmakers.

He told the House that insurance cover for all frontline workers who may be engaged to do this work for us is being procured.

More than two dozen nations have reported cases of Corona Virus, but so far no confirmations have been made across Africa or Latin America except for one Cameroonian living in China; but that suggests the virus may not be too far away, considering the number of Ghanaians who regularly visit China to purchase goods.

Indeed, this Paper is happy that government is not resting on its oars and is taking precautionary measures to contain the virus should it spread to our jurisdiction.

However, a concern to many Ghanaians is that many Chinese nationals who are temporarily domiciled here have gone back to China to celebrate the Lunar New Year and should be coming back after the festivities. We urge our port and immigration officials to be on the lookout for any carrier of the virus when they touch down in Accra.

We need to exercise extreme vigilance in times like these, since the virus is devastating many communities.

Corona Viruses are spread through air-droplets expelled when an infected individual coughs or sneezes within a range of about 3 feet. Health professionals across the world are working around the clock to find a cure for the disease.

  • Marijuana gardens destroyed in park

Security officials in Kasese District have destroyed more than 2.5 acres of marijuana plantations in Queen Elizabeth National Park and arrested six suspects.

The officials found the plantations about 20 kilometers from Kanyangeya UWA ranger post in Kasese Town.

Ms. Zelufa Masika, an investigator with UWA at Katunguru post, said they received intelligence information that a group of people had invaded the park and planted marijuana.

“After our intelligence gathered the information, we had to mobilize a team of rangers who surrounded the park and arrested six suspects. The gardens were later handed over to Kasese Central Police Station for further management,” Ms Masika said.

She said the planters had started harvesting and plants had matured up to about five months.

Mr Aron Isingoma, the officer-in-charge of Kanyangeya UWA ranger post, said it took them four days to track the whereabouts of the plantations and the suspects. Mr Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori east regional police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests. “We currently have six suspects as investigations continue. We must establish the real owners of the gardens in the national park so that they can be dealt with accordingly,” Mr Twesige said.

“We are going to charge them with being in possession of narcotics, operating without licenses and trafficking, among other charges of illegal entry into the national park,” Mr Twesige said.

He added that they had recovered sacks of the marijuana and the plantations had been cut down and burnt.

Police suspect that people who do illegal activities in the park could be armed poachers.

One of the suspects said they sell a basin of the marijuana at Shs100,000 to some businesspeople who take it to Kampala.

In 2013, another garden of marijuana was destroyed in the park.

    Law says

According to Anti-Narcotic Act of 2015, anyone found in possession of narcotics is sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on conviction, operating without licence is five years while trafficking it [buying and selling] attracts a sentence of life imprisonment.

  • Five biggest scandals of South Africa ex-president Zuma

An arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday for South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma after he failed to appear at a pre-trial hearing on fraud, corruption and racketeering charges related to a 1990s arms deal.

Zuma’s lawyers blamed ill-health for the 77-year-old’s absence, and the execution of the warrant was deferred until May 6, when the long-running case is due to resume.

It is far from the first scandal to hit Zuma, who reluctantly stepped down under pressure from his ANC party in February 2018 in the face of mounting allegations that his friends, the wealthy Gupta family, had undue influence on his administration.

Here are five of his biggest scandals:

    Arms deal

Corruption charges have long loomed over Zuma in relation to a multi-billion-dollar arms deal signed in 1999 when he was deputy president.

He and other officials are alleged to have accepted bribes from five European arms manufacturers to influence the choice of weaponry bought in the deal.

But the charges were shelved in 2009 — the year Zuma became president.

After protracted back-and-forth court cases, in March 2018 — a month after he resigned as president — national prosecutors decided Zuma was liable to face prosecution on 783 counts of corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering charges relating to the arms deal.

Zuma’s advisor, Schabir Shaik, was jailed for 15 years in 2005. He was released on medical parole in 2009 after Zuma became president.

The former president faces jail for the criminal charges over hundreds of payments he allegedly received, valuing a total of $270,000.

    Zuma denies the charges.

    Nkandla residence upgrades

South Africa’s graft watchdog in 2014 found Zuma to have “benefited unduly” from so-called security upgrades to his rural Nkandla residence in KwaZulu-Natal province.

The work, paid for with taxpayers’ money, cost $24 million and included a swimming pool — which was described as a fire-fighting facility — as well as a cattle enclosure, an amphitheatre and a visitors’ centre.

For two years, Zuma fought the order to repay part of the money. The scandal came to dominate his presidency, with opposition lawmakers chanting “Pay back the money!” every time he appeared in parliament.

In March 2016 the constitutional court ordered Zuma to pay back the cash, the judges accusing him of failing to respect and uphold the constitution.

    Guptagate

As the Nkandla debacle built to a climax, its place in the headlines was overtaken by a new scandal, known as Guptagate.

The scandal involved the president’s allegedly corrupt relationship with a wealthy family of Indian immigrants headed by three brothers — Ajay, Atul and Rajesh Gupta — who built a business empire in mining, media, technology and engineering.

Smouldering rumours of the family’s undue influence on the president burst into the open in 2016 when evidence emerged that the Guptas had offered key government jobs to those who could help their business interests.

Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas revealed that the Guptas had offered him a promotion shortly before Zuma sacked respected finance minister Nhlanhla Nene in December 2015.

    Rape charges and HIV myth

Before taking office, Zuma was put on trial in 2006 for rape, in a case that dismayed many South Africans.

Zuma said the sex with the 31-year-old family friend was consensual and he was acquitted.

But he told the court he had showered to avoid contracting HIV after having unprotected sex with his HIV-positive accuser — a common but dangerous myth.

Zuma was head of the South African National AIDS Council at the time, and was pilloried for his ignorance.

Nearly a fifth of South Africans aged between 15 and 49 are HIV-positive.

    Omar al-Bashir

Then Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir was allowed to attend a meeting of the African Union in Johannesburg in 2015, despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes in the conflict in Darfur.

The government said the fact that he was attending the summit as a head of state meant he had immunity, but the court disagreed.

Zuma faced an impeachment vote in parliament over the issue in September 2016, but ANC lawmakers voted overwhelmingly against it.
