  • 20 killed during anointing service stampede in Tanzania

At least 20 people in Tanzania were trampled to death at an open-air evangelical Christian church service in the north of the country, officials said on Sunday.

Government official Kippi Warioba, District Commissioner in the northern town of Moshi, said he feared the number of dead could still rise from the accident, which took place on Saturday afternoon.

“So far, 20 people have died, but the death toll could increase as there were also wounded,” Warioba told AFP.

The tragedy happened when a crowd of worshippers was attending a prayer ceremony on Saturday led by the popular preacher, Boniface Mwamposa, who heads the Arise and Shine Ministry Tanzania.

The stampede occurred when Mwamposa, who calls himself the “Apostle”, poured what he said was holy oil on the ground and the crowd surged toward to touch it in the hope of being cured of sickness, witnesses said.

“The Apostle Boniface Mwamposa poured sacred anointing oil on the ground,” one witness, Jennifer Temu, told AFP.

“Dozens of people immediately fell being jostled and trampled, and some died. We have counted 20 people killed — but there are also wounded.”

“It was horrible, people trampled on mercilessly, jostling each other with elbows,” said another witness, Peter Kilewo.

“It was like the preacher had thrown bundles of dollars about… and there were all these deaths!”

  • Mahamas comments on ambulances disappointing — Information Minister

The Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described comments made by the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, on the distribution of ambulances to constituencies across the country as disappointing and deceptive.

He said the former President, in an encounter with some financial journalists last Thursday, had suggested that the recent distribution of 307 ambulances was misplaced because there were uncompleted clinics and hospitals across the country that needed to have been completed first.

Reacting to the comments made by the former President in an encounter with the media last Friday, Mr Nkrumah said although the government was not surprised by the comments, it thought they were disappointing”.

He said the delivery of emergency healthcare infrastructure in the country was a good initiative that must not be run down for political expediency.

    Opposition u-turn

Mr Nkrumah explained that although Mr Mahama was running down the distribution of the ambulances, the minority in Parliament and the NDC held series of activities to call for the immediate distribution of the ambulances.

“They even gave the government a three-day ultimatum to distribute the ambulances prior to its distribution,” he said.

Giving more instances to support his claim, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the NDC government under the leadership of the former President procured some ambulances for distribution across the country at a time all hospitals had not been completed, ” so where were they taking the sick people”? he asked.

He said the public must see the distribution of ambulances as a good intervention for the country and what needed to be discussed was how to pay for them, how to maintain them how to reduce prank calls and make the service delivery effective to save lives across the country.

He said although the former President was downplaying the need to organise an event for the distribution of the ambulances, there were several evidence and photos of the NDC flag bearer distributing saucepans and inaugurating toilet facilities.

    No alternatives

On the issue of management of the economy, he said the government was disappointed that the former President was unable to propose any economic management alternative during his two hours encounter with financial journalists although he had criticised efforts by the government to restore the economy to its past glory.

“He has not been able to explain what he would do differently and he said he was now putting together a working group or committee to look at the issues but that is not the kind of discourse we want now,” he said.

He said the former President’s criticism of the governments strategy of managing the economy was frivolous as it did not present any alternative solution or strategies.

  • France to send 600 more troops to Sahel

France has announced it is sending an extra 600 troops to Africa’s Sahel region, boosting the total number of French forces to 5,100.

Most of them will be deployed to the border regions between Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso – an area especially badly hit by jihadist attacks.

But regional and international forces, plus armed drones and other forms of support, seem incapable of stemming the violence.

Attacks by militants linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have significantly increased in the past year, causing more than half a million people to flee their homes.

The Sahel region, a semi-arid stretch of land just south of the Sahara Desert, has been a frontline in the war against Islamist militancy for almost a decade.

French President Emmanuel Macron last month hosted a summit with his counterparts from the Sahel belt of western Africa to discuss the military campaign against jihadist militants.

  • Majid Michel caught kissing in a movie after vowing it wont happen again

Ghanaian actor turned preacher, Majid Michel back in 2017 made the very emphatic statement that he will no longer accept kissing roles in movies as that may affect his new assignment as an evangelist.

Majid Michel made this statement on Saturday, October 14 in Koforidua when he was hosted by Dr. Prekese of Bryt FM prior to the premiere of “Adam The Eve” movie in the city.

We are guessing he might have forgotten about this statement entirely or the money was too good to let go since he has been seen in the snippet of the movie “Twin Flames”, which is yet to be premiered, landing a kiss on the lips of an actress.

  • Burkina Faso to arm civilians against militants

The authorities in Burkina Faso, struggling to grapple with a growing wave of Islamist militant attacks that is affecting the region, are planning to give weapons to civilians.

In January alone, at least 60 people were killed in four separate attacks in the north of the country.

Members of parliament recently unanimously voted in favour of arming civilians in a move they said would help combat armed groups. It is due to be signed into law.

Any national aged 18 and over who has a “spirit of sacrifice” can be considered for recruitment and there is no maximum age. But recruits cannot be part of any political group or party.

The attacks by militants linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have significantly increased in the past year, causing more than half a million people to flee their homes.

Critics have questioned whether the new measure will make people safer, but the government insists that armed volunteers are necessary to stem the spread of violence.

  • Airbus Scandal: Ghanaians hunt for Government official 1, Intermediary 5&8

Following revelations by plane manufacturer Airbus, that it had an elaborate scheme that paid some €5 million to officials under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, mainly through a close relative to a key elected government official at the time the bribe was paid, some Ghanaians who are curious to know the officials involved are digging deeper into clues provided by the company in court documents.

Some comments on social media suggest that the close relative of the elected Ghanaian Government Official who the court documents say is a UK national born in Ghana, could be a relation to a powerful person in government at the time while the government official is the said official himself who at the time may have played a key role in negotiations for the purchase of the two planes which began in 2009.

Activists of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), keen to score political points, have been busy accusing former President John Mahama and his brother as the ones referred to in the court documents even though the documents have named no one.

Their assertions come from the court ruling which reads in part, “Between 2009 and 2015 an Airbus defence company engaged Intermediary 5, a close relative of a high ranking elected Ghanaian Government official (Government Official 1) as its BP in respect of the proposed sale of three military transport aircraft to the Government of Ghana. A number of Airbus employees knew that Intermediary 5 was a close relative of Government Official 1,w ho was a key decision maker in respect of the proposed sales.

A number of Airbus employees made or promised success-based commission payments of approximately €5 million to Intermediary 5. False documentation was created by or with the agreement of Airbus employees in order to support and disguise these payments. The payments were intended to induce or reward “improper favour” by Government Official 1 towards Airbus.”

He dismissed reports of a case of the virus in the state and urged citizens to disregard the misinformation as well as any other information about the virus that did not emanate from his office, the State Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Health or the National Centre for Disease Control.

He said Christian marriage was specially constituted by God and should be governed by sound biblical principles.

  • Tema motorway: Road crash claims six lives

At least six people are feared dead in a road crash involving a sprinter bus and a saloon car on the Accra-Tema motorway on Sunday morning.

Eyewitnesses say both vehicles were heading towards Tema when the accident occurred.

According to them, one of the tyres of the sprinter bus burst and the driver lost control of the steering wheel hitting the saloon car in the process.

The only person onboard the saloon car is said to have escaped unhurt.

The victims of the accident were said to have been rushed to the Tema General hospital by the police patrol team in KIA trucks as no ambulances were available, eyewitnesses said.

“The red car was in front of the trotro.  The trotro burst one of its tyres and was trying to control the car but a few moments later the driver lost total control of the car and hit the red car that was beside it. The red car went into the gully between the two motorways. The trotro, on the other hand, somersaulted about three or four times before landing inside the bush on the side of the road. So, I got down and checked on the guy in the red car and realized he had survived so we asked him to go to the hospital. Some onlookers came and tried to pull people out of the trotro which was in the bush. We realized that about six people had died but I cannot give a proper account of the number of those that got injured, but it was very serious,” an eyewitness said.

Another eyewitness said “I presume the driver of the sprinter bus panicked a bit when he burst one of his tyres which led to him crashing into the saloon car in front of him. Some officials of the police MTTD showed about 10 minutes after I got to the scene and they carried the injured and those who were feared dead unto a KIA truck. A lady who was on board another bus identified one of the victims as her sister so she was asked to pack the belongings of the victim and have them taken to the hospital.”

Five dead, many injured in crash on Accra-Takoradi road

A similar accident occurred at Gomoa Antseadze, in the Central Region on Saturday [February 1, 2019] in which five persons lost their lives with about 15 others in critical condition after an articulated truck, with registration number AS 8726-10, collided with a Toyota minibus with registration number GX 3045-18.

The minibus was on its way to Accra from Takoradi, while the truck was heading in the opposite direction towards Takoradi.

Some eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News said the truck wrongly overtook a vehicle ahead of it and veered into the path of the oncoming minibus, resulting in a head-on collision.

  • We will replace one district, one factory with staple processing zones – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the next National Democratic Congress government will replace the one district, one factory programme to staple processing zones.

That, he said would encourage farmers and investors to pump in more resources into the processing sector as they would not be restricted by political demarcations.

Former President Mahama who was interacting with Journalists in Accra said the current one district, one factory was not plausible as not all districts were endowed and resourceful enough to come out with workable and sustainable factories to create jobs.

He explained that creating the staple processing zones would ensure a constant supply of raw materials to the factories, as the suppliers would not be limited by political demarcations as in the case of one district, one factory policy.

The Former President said under the staple processing zones, the government would identify areas that had a comparative advantage in the production of certain staple foods and establish factories that would rely on a constant supply of raw materials and create wealth for farmers.

He also gave the assurance that his next administration would revamp the cocoa industry, which he said was taking a nosedive since 2017.

The revamping, he said would be hinged on regular and timely supply of inputs, free fertilizers, rehabilitation of cocoa-growing areas roads, revamp the Produce Buying Company and equip them adequately to take over the buying of cocoa and other indigenous produce, to eliminate the monopoly of foreigners in that sector.

  • Coronavirus: What it does to the body

Fighting the new coronavirus has been a battle against the unknown for doctors.

How does it attack the body? What are the full range of symptoms? Who is more likely to be seriously ill or die? How do you treat it?

Now, an account by medics on the front line of this epidemic, at the Jinyintan Hospital, in Wuhan, is starting to provide answers.

A detailed analysis of the first 99 patients treated there has been published in the Lancet medical journal.

    Lung assault

All of the 99 patients taken to the hospital had pneumonia – their lungs were inflamed and the tiny sacs where oxygen moves from the air to the blood were filling with water.

    Other symptoms were:

*82 had fever *81 had a cough *31 had shortness of breath *11 had muscle ache *nine had confusion *eight had a headache *five had a sore throat

    First deaths

The first two patients to die were seemingly healthy, although they were long-term smokers and that would have weakened their lungs.

The first, a 61-year-old man, had severe pneumonia when he arrived at hospital.

He was in acute respiratory distress, meaning his lungs were unable to provide enough oxygen to his organs to keep his body alive.

Despite being put on a ventilator, his lungs failed and his heart stopped beating. He died 11 days after he was admitted.

The second patient, a 69-year-old man, also had acute respiratory distress syndrome.

He was attached to an artificial lung or ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) machine but this wasn’t enough. He died of severe pneumonia and septic shock when his blood pressure collapsed. At least 10% die

As of 25 January, of the 99 patients:

*57 were still in hospital *31 had been discharged *11 had died

This does not mean the death rate of the disease is 11%, though, as some of those still in hospital may yet die and many others have such mild symptoms they do not end up in hospital.

    Market workers

Live animals sold at the Huanan seafood market are thought to be the source of the infection, called 2019-nCoV.

And 49 out of the 99 patients had a direct connection to the market:

*47 worked there, either as managers or manning the stalls two were shoppers who had only popped in

    Middle-aged men worst affected

Most of the 99 patients were middle-aged, with an average age of 56 – and 67 of them were men.

However, more recent figures suggest a more even gender split. The China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 1.2 men were infected for every 1.0 women.

There are two possible explanations for the difference: Men could be more likely to become severely ill and need hospital treatment, Men, for social or cultural reasons, may have been more likely to be exposed to the virus at the beginning of the outbreak.

Dr Li Zhang, at the hospital, says: “The reduced susceptibility of females to viral infections could be attributed to the protection from X chromosome and sex hormones, which play an important role in immunity.”

And those who were already sick

Most of the 99 had other diseases that may have made them more vulnerable to the virus as a “result of the weaker immune functions of these patients”:

40 had a weak heart or damaged blood vessels due to conditions including heart disease, heart failure and stroke. A further 12 patients had diabetes.

  • Only a corrupt government will justify EC’s budget for new voters’ register Sammy Gyamfi

National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has described as corrupt every supporter of the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voter’ register.

He said the amount of money being ‘injected’ into the compilation of a new register is a bit on the high side, therefore whoever backs it is ‘corrupt’.

The EC’s decision has generated lots of controversies with the ruling government advocating in favour of it and the NDC and other opposition parties, against.

The Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voter Register (IPRAN) of which the NDC is part of, has sworn to resist the EC’s decision insisting that there is nothing wrong with the current register.

On Thursday, the EC and its Eminent Advisory Committee (EAC), as well as the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) and other stakeholders, held a meeting to bring an end to the debate but it ended inconclusively.

Speaking to this on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Sammy Gyamfi said they are still not convinced.

He further added that “it is only a corrupt government and people who will justify the budget put forward by the EC for a new voters’ register.”

  • Liverpool equal Man City home wins record

Liverpool equalled Manchester City’s record of 20 consecutive wins at home in the Premier League with an emphatic victory over Southampton at Anfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the opener just after half time – his second goal in as many league matches – when he drilled the ball low into the bottom corner.

Reds’ skipper Jordan Henderson made it 2-0 on the hour mark with a calm finish after being set up by Roberto Firmino.

Henderson then played in Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s third and the Egypt forward added a fourth from close range in the last minute.

The scoreline was harsh on the visitors, who matched Liverpool for much of the first hour with Danny Ings going close in the first half and Shane Long also denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson.

The victory extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league to 42 games and they now sit 22 points clear at the top of the table with second-placed Manchester City not playing until Sunday.

It was Southampton’s first away defeat in five games and they fall to 11th place.

Title gets closer, unbeaten run rolls on

Liverpool’s wait for a first league title in 30 years will surely end this season. They have one hand on the trophy and the other is moving steadily closer with every fixture.

It is only 1 February but Liverpool are 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, unbeaten in 42 games, have conceded just one league goal in their last 10 matches and have 73 points from 25 games – a top-flight record.

Before Saturday, only City had won more consecutive games at home in the Premier League, between March 2011 and March 2012.

With only 13 matches left, it is increasingly surely only a question of whether Liverpool can remain unbeaten for the season rather than if they end their drought.

Nevertheless, their performance in the first half against Southampton was nervous and suggested the visitors could have a chance to inflict a first defeat on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Sloppy passes, mistakes at the back and a lack of intensity going forward meant the Saints had opportunities to score and were barely stretched at the back.

Southampton, spearheaded by top-scorer Ings in attack, finished the half as the better team, going close through the former Reds striker as well as Long and Moussa Djenepo.

But Liverpool, no doubt invigorated by a half-time talk from Klopp, were quick out the blocks in the second half and as soon as they scored the victory that was expected before the match felt inevitable.

The scorer of that opener, Oxlade-Chamberlain, is starting to regain the form he demonstrated prior to picking up a serious knee injury while Henderson was magnificent again in controlling the midfield. They were solid at the back with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk’s centre-back partnership continuing to flourish.

The Reds were without the injured Sadio Mane, but Firmino and Salah delivered the goods; the Brazil striker produced a hat-trick of assists to take his total to 51 in all competitions for the club, while Salah scored twice.

  • Mourinho praises Levy over Eriksen deal

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has praised the “fantastic” deal Daniel Levy negotiated over the exit of Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen’s six-and-a-half-year stay at Spurs came to a close this week when he joined Inter Milan, ending a long-running saga regarding his future.

The Denmark international was not prepared to sign a new contract with Spurs but despite the possibility of losing him on a free in five months time, Levy negotiated hard with the Serie A side and got £16.9m

That money was immediately put towards Steven Bergwijn’s £27m fee from PSV Eindhoven and Mourinho felt it was good business.

“Mr Levy on the business side managed to do a great deal with six months on his contract,” he said.

“Mr Levy managed to get an important transfer fee that was used to buy a 21-year-old player like Steven Bergwijn. So, Mr Levy did fantastic for the club.

“Fantastic deal for a player that is free in a few months and again that money was reinvested in the purchase of Steven Bergwijn.

“He’s young, yes he’s young, but it’s a player with now five-and-a-half-years of contract with us and a player with fantastic conditions to be very good for us so I think the Christian [Eriksen] situation was very well managed by Mr Levy.”

Mourinho knew that Eriksen wanted to leave the club since the day he arrived in November, after he informed him he had no intention of renewing his contract.

Eriksen had already gone public with his desire for a new challenge and would have ideally left in the summer transfer window, but no serious interest was forthcoming.

Despite Mourinho knowing his intentions, he still involved Eriksen, who struggled for form following his failure to leave in the summer.

Mourinho praised Eriksen’s professionalism in a tough situation.

“Christian was a player that for a long time we knew – we didn’t tell because of a moral agreement with him – from the first day I arrived he told me he was not going to sign,” Mourinho added.

“From that moment I was just trying to build the team without him. That was the reason why I didn’t play him many, many times.

“At the same time, Christian being a good professional and having respect for the club and his team-mates I knew that with some limitations – there are always limitations with a player in his situation – that until his last day he tried to help the team and be a positive guy in the dressing room, which he was.

“Christian would always give us some of his talent until the end of the season. He is a good professional, respect to the club, respect to the dressing room, if he stayed here I think he would always give us something.

“Christian was a good guy in the dressing room, always a good professional, always a positive guy, with the limitations of somebody that wants to leave. You could feel in some matches he was not Christian. I feel that is normal.

“But he would always be a positive guy and a respectful guy. We were happy to have him here until the end of the season.”

  • Five major Premier League transfers

There was little late drama as the January transfer window closed on Friday, but Premier League clubs still spent over £200 million ($261 million) over the past month on new players.

AFP Sports looks at five of the biggest moves of the January window.

Bruno Fernandes (Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United)

United’s long-running interest in the Portuguese international midfielder finally materialised in a 55 million euro (£47 million, $61 million) deal that could rise to as much as 80 million euros if performance-related add-ons are met.

Fernandes, 25, has been a prolific goalscorer for Sporting over the past two seasons and will offer a much-needed goal threat to a United side devoid of the creative talents of Paul Pogba and top scorer Marcus Rashford for the next few weeks due to injury.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed Fernandes will make his debut when Wolves visit Old Trafford on Saturday and the Red Devils need an instant impact from their latest big money buy as they trail Chelsea by six points in the race for a top-four finish.

Steven Bergwijn (PSV Eindhoven to Tottenham)

Spurs’ manager Jose Mourinho did not get the striker he desired to deputise for Harry Kane, but he does have another option in attack with the arrival of Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn.

The highly-rated 22-year-old already has nine caps for the Netherlands and scored 31 goals for PSV in winning three Eredivisie titles.

Takumi Minamino (Red Bull Salzburg to Liverpool)

Liverpool are cruising towards a first Premier League title for 30 years in large part thanks to their smart recruitment over the past few years and Minamino could be another bargain for the European champions.

The Japanese international impressed Jurgen Klopp as Salzburg pushed Liverpool despite twice losing narrowly to the Reds in the Champions League group stages and was available for just £7.25 million due to a buyout clause in his contract with the Austrian champions.

Sander Berge (Genk to Sheffield United)

Sensing the chance to qualify for Europe for the first time in the club’s history, the Blades have splashed £22 million on talented Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge.

Chris Wilder’s men are eighth in the table, but just one point behind United in the Europa League places.

Mbwana Samatta (Genk to Aston Villa)

Also leaving the Belgian champions this month was Samatta, who will become the first Tanzanian to feature in the Premier League.

A season-ending injury to Brazilian Wesley left Villa without a natural striker and Samatta will be hoping to make a better impact at Bournemouth on Saturday than in his debut against Leicester on Tuesday when he missed a glorious chance as Dean Smith’s men progressed to the League Cup final.

  • CAF Vice President Fouzi Lekjaa urges African football to embrace positive reforms

The President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, has called on African football leaders to embrace the reforms being undertaken by FIFA to speed up development of the game on the continent.

Lekjaa gave his advice to African football leaders who met at the iconic Mohammed VI Football Complex at Maamora in Sale to take part in the seminar on the development of football infrastructure on the continent.

Lekjaa, spoke first to welcome the guests at the amazing complex for football which was recently commissioned before going to the heart of the matter, saying that Africa has the potential to move forward.

“It is imperative to react and act without wasting even more time and without slacking, with the necessary determination and the goodwill of each other,” Lekjaa said as he opened the seminar of all the 54 African football federations.

“You have to take advantage of the knowledge you have to move forward. But despite all the potential we have, we are often criticized for fragility, not to say underdevelopment and blocking of development,” he declared.

Aware of the difficult situation, Fouzi Lekjaa was nevertheless optimistic for the future of Africa football thanks to the talents and the ability to embrace the changes.

“Today, the context is more favorable than ever before, especially since we have an exemplary relationship with FIFA, with a young president who admires Africa. The expectations are enormous, so we have to show the world that we are capable of meeting challenges,” he said.

The president of the African Football Confederation (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad, for his part once again displayed the ambitions of the continental body in terms of infrastructure. “It is now essential for CAF that all African federations finally have stadiums to match its players and supporters,” said the Malagasy.

For him, there is no longer any question of going back. “We need to speed up the process to reach the global level. We can no longer go back and will have to participate in world competitions, ”he adds.

To do this, Ahmad Ahmad encourages African federations to manage their own infrastructures within the framework of public-private partnership.

  • Fifa President Infantino proposes Africa Cup of Nations be held every four years

Fifa President, Gianni Infantino, has proposed to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) that the Africa Cup of Nations be held every four years instead of biennially.

Infantino is among the speakers at a Caf seminar in Morocco which is focusing on the development of football competitions and infrastructure in Africa.

“I propose to organise the Africa Cup of Nations every four years rather than two years,” the Fifa President told delegates in Rabat.

The next Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Cameroon in 2021 and will revert back to its original placing of January and February in the calendar.

Last year, the Nations Cup in Egypt was held in June and July for the first time and was expanded to 24 teams.

Infantino spoke about the Africa Cup of Nations in relation to specific areas which he identified as needing “intervention” to help boost African football.

“We have to develop African solutions to African problems. We have identified three areas for intervention namely refereeing, infrastructure and competitions.

“I think it’s time to stop talking about the development of African football, and take actions. No African team has won the World Cup. And there is an impression Africa is going backwards,” Infantino added.

The seminar was scheduled to end on Saturday evening ahead of Caf’s Executive Committee meeting on Sunday.

  • MP cries for National Infectious Diseases Management Centre

Dr Sebastian Issa Ngmenenso Sandaare, Member of Parliament (MP) for Daffiama Bussie Issa, says it is time Ghana had a National Infectious Diseases Management Centre.

He said medically it was not safe for people with infectious diseases to mix with other patients in the same health facility.

Recalling the threat of Ebola, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the early 2000s and the current Coronavirus, the MP, who is also a medical doctor, said the nation should spare no further time in having infectious diseases centres, with one major one to effectively manage such ailments.

“There already are some infectious diseases in Ghana, and you remember the risks associated with SARS, which was traced to China in 2002, and now this coronavirus, which is also coming from China. Strangely, medical scientists are not abreast with this coronavirus, and that is what makes it more dangerous,” he said.

Dr Sandaare said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after contributing to a statement on the disease by Dr Kurt Nawaane, MP for Nabdam, in Parliament.

He suggested the strengthening of health systems in the country, including the handling of existing infectious diseases and emerging ones.

An infection happens when a foreign organism enters a person’s body and causes harm. The organism uses the body to sustain itself, reproduce, and colonize. The most common and deadly types of infection are bacterial, viral, fungal, and prions. These infectious organisms are known as pathogens.

Some infections are mild and barely noticeable, but others are severe and life-threatening, and some are resistant to treatment, which can be transmitted in a variety of ways.

In May 2016 the first of five multi-purpose infectious disease isolation centres for the Greater Accra Region was inaugurated at the La General Hospital in Accra, with four others expected later at Maamobi, Korle-Bu and Adabraka polyclinics and the Ga South Hospital.

Dr Sandaare said with the threat of coronavirus the National Infectious Diseases Management Centre was even more needed to deal with unforeseeable emergencies.

The coronavirus, which is a respiratory disease, is not understood by medical scientists but the World Health Organization is working with experts to ascertain its possible cure.

Some of the symptoms are fever, flu, cough and general malaise.

Dr Sandaare suggested that people should eat balanced meals, take enough water, and have adequate rest in order to boost their immune system.

He, however, observed that Ghana had the capacity in handling such infectious diseases and would not be out of place if Ghanaian medical doctors were made part of the medical investigation team to China by the WHO.

He called for an established and dedicated fund for such emergencies, which could be sourced from the National Health Insurance Fund and the oil money.

The WHO has declared the coronavirus a global health emergency. The virus has reportedly spread to at least 22 countries, claimed more than 200 lives in China and hospitalised more than 9,000.

  • Dawhenya-Savannah residents unhappy with poor drain management

Residents of Savanna, a community in Dawehnya in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, are worried over poor local drain management which can cause an epidemic soon.

According to the residents, liquid waste that finds its way into the drains brings with its pungent odour, flies and algae.

Some of the residents including the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Sammuel Nartey George, had fingered Devtraco Limited, a real estate entity, for diverting wastewater including human excreta through the drains hence the stench in the area.

A food vendor who gave her name as Madam Perpetual told the GNA that she had lost all her customers due to the stench emanating from the drains.

Mr James Bonfor, Director in charge of infrastructure at Devtraco Limited, told the GNA that the allegations against Devtraco were false saying that every household within the Devtraco court had its own septic tank which received faecal matter.

According to him, liquid waste from Devtraco was treated before discharge.

  • Fight against Coronavirus: NUGS-China receives 50,000 RMB from Ghana

The Ghana Embassy in Beijing, China, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has given 50,000 RMB to the National Union of Ghana Student (NUGS-China).

A statement signed jointly by Mr Bekoe Bernard Boamah, the NUGS-China Secretary-General, and Mr Felix Gyawu-Addo, the NUGS-China President, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the amount was for the procurement of food and protective items for the distressed members in the wake of the Coronavirus Outbreak.

The virus has claimed 213 lives and hospitalised more than 9,000.

The statement said the initiative was taken in response to challenges raised by Chapter representatives during a four-hour meeting held on the January 29 between the Ghana Embassy, the National Executive Council, and representatives of NUGS-China.

During the meeting, chapter representatives unanimously affirmed that all Ghanaian students in their respective cities were safe from the virus.

“They mentioned that the shortage of nose masks and hand sanitizers had led to some concerns and prevented some members from going out to buy basic needs like food and water,” it stated.

The statement said at the end of the meeting, chaired by Mr Edward Boateng, Ghana’s Ambassador to China, the Embassy officials promised to channel all the concerns raised to Accra for response.

Out of the amount 30,000 RMB is to be given to Chapters in Hubei Province.

The statement said Hubei Province was the epicentre of the disease and is also where the lock-down was severest.

The incident happened at Panyinikrom, a farming community near Kyeremasu in the Dormaa East District in the Bono Region.

The police identified the deceased as Patrick Osei, popularly known as Atta Small, 37, and Kofi Tutu, 25.

The two suspected illegal miners were said to have gone to the abandoned galamsey site with others to engage in illegal mining.

    Loose compact of sand

The Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, told the Daily Graphic that while they were busy digging for gold in the abandoned pit, a loose compact of sand caved in and trapped them, leading to their death.

The Daily Graphic also gathered that there were about seven illegal miners in the pit at the time of the unfortunate incident.

Although their colleagues managed to come out, luck eluded the two who were unable to do so.

Their colleagues, however, bolted and left them to their fate after realising that they could not come out of the pit.

    Police briefing

Chief Inspector Oppong said the fate of the two was similar to being buried alive, saying the police with the help of some community members, managed to retrieve the bodies from the pit.

He explained that a relative of the deceased, Mr Thomas Asamoah Yeboah, a carpenter at Kyeremasu, accompanied by Martin Kwasi Yeboah and two others, called at the charge office to report the incident.

“The relatives of the deceased told the police that they had information that their brothers were trapped in the abandoned galamsey pit while prospecting for gold,” he stated.

  • Brexit: UK Officially Leaves European Union

The United Kingdom (UK) is officially no longer a member of the European Union (EU) after 47 years of membership.

The historic moment, which happened on the night of Friday, January 31, was marked by both celebrations and anti-Brexit protests.

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. through a message shared on social media, vowed to bring the country together and take its citizen forward.

“For many people, this is an astonishing moment of hope, a moment they thought would never come. And there are many of course who feel a sense of anxiety and loss” read the message.

“And then, of course, there is a third group – perhaps the biggest – who had started to worry that the whole political wrangle would never come to an end,” he added.

The prime minister also said that the EU had evolved over 50 years and that its strengths and admirable qualities no longer suited the UK.

“The most important thing to say tonight is that this is not an end but a beginning and a moment of real national renewal and change,” he said.

Hundreds gathered in Parliament Square to celebrate Brexit, singing patriotic songs and cheering speeches from leading Brexiteers.

Boris marked the historic moment with his team at his Downing Street office, celebrating with English sparkling wine and an array of British culinary treats.

Anti-Brexit campaigners mounted several protests along the Irish border.

Under the terms of the withdrawal agreement between the UK and EU, Britain now enters a transition period until the end of 2020.

This means London will abide by most EU laws while their future relationship is hashed out and Boris must achieve a trade deal with the EU within 11 months.

Most experts have described the task as ambitious at best, but his wider mission over the next five years will be to find a way to repair the country’s divisions.

Brexit has caused the downfall of two prime ministers. David Cameron resigned after the unexpected win for the Leave camp and his successor, Theresa May.
