The facility in the beginning was funded by the family of Miss Omaboe (her family paid for the space that the creche is currently situated in) as well as from Miss Omaboe herself.

  • Alfred Duncan to join AC Milan in a surprise swap deal

Ghanaian Midfielder Alfred Duncan could land at AC Milan following a move by the Italian giant sign the Sassuolo star.

Milan are said to be considering a swap with their defender Frank Kessie.

According report by Italian website Pedullà, the former European champions stand are in pole position to snatch Duncan but much will depend on an intended swap with their Ivorian defender Frank Kessie.

The move by Milan comes as a cross to Fiorentina, had written to Sassuolo and were in waiting for the reopening of the January transfer window.

Read:Alfred Duncan at risk of league opener with injury

“Milan, have kept an eye on Alfred Duncan,” the report said.

“The pedulla player has an offer from Fiorentina but is waiting foor the Devil. It all depends on Frank Kessie.”

Alfred Duncan expects Milan , but everything will depend on Frank Kessie

Because if the positions of Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek and Suso would seem rather defined, the situation of the former Atalanta defender will be different.

In fact, as Alfredo Pedullà reports through the CorSport columns, the club has not yet completely dissolved its reservations regarding the Ivorian midfielder.

Read:Sassuolo wants €20 million for Alfred Duncan

It is theoretically among the few players who could secure a treasure for the club, but at the same time the management would not have really decided on what to do. Owner in Cagliari, the company would certainly have expected more from him in Sardinia and in general so far. But not to the point of liquidating it immediately and planning a sale without thinking about it.

So after having touched Wolverhampton in the summer, there is now Inter in the background for the 23 year old from Ouragahio. The player likes the Nerazzurri who evaluate him as an alternative to Arturo Vidal and continues to tease some English clubs. The footballer, for his part, seems not to have foreseen a departure, at least not until June even if the situation is still in progress.

In fact, Milan really likes Duncan del Sassuolo and already since last July when concrete steps were taken in this direction. In the end the Emilian club decided to sacrifice Stefano Sensi and to keep the 26-year-old Ghanaian, promising to satisfy him in the next session. Or this.

Read:Alfred Duncan scores in 8 goals thriller

And now here is the great opportunity. The player is followed by Fiorentina where he would like to go, but first – ensures Pedullà – he wants to understand what Milan will decide to do.

Should Kessie really come out, he could therefore land the median on display at the Mapei Stadium in the last 3 and a half years.

The Annual New Year School and Conference was introduced in 1948 and it brings together people from all walks of life to deliberate on topical issues of national and international interest.

Mr Krufi said the First Tier was a mandatory Basic National Social Security Scheme, which was a defined benefit scheme.

He said the contribution rate was 13.5 per cent of basic salary, including 2.5 per cent for National Health Insurance Scheme; adding that it only pays monthly pensions.

He explained that the Second Tier was a mandatory, privately emanated Occupational Pension Scheme, which was a defined contribution scheme and pays lump sum benefits; stating that the contribution rate was five per cent of basic salary.

Mr Krufi said the Third Tier was a voluntary, privately-managed Provident Fund and Personal Pension Schemes.

He said the Third Tier was on a defined contribution basis and was supported by tax incentives.

He said the Personal Pension Scheme applies to individuals in the informal sector who were covered by any pension scheme under the mandatory part of the three-tier pension scheme.

Mr Krufi said the Scheme also applies to individuals who want to make voluntary contributions to enhance their pension benefits outside the mandatory schemes or Provident Fund Schemes.

On how far has the pension reform come? Mr Krufi said in terms of pension assets: the total pension assets for both the Social Security Funds and the Private Pension Funds together form GH¢5.1 billion (being 6.75 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to GH¢23.5 billion (seven per cent of GDP).

“We have, as of December 2019, 241 Private Pension Schemes comprising Employer-Sponsored Master Trust Occupational Pension Schemes, Employer-Sponsored Master Trust Provident Fund Schemes, and Personal/Group Pension Schemes.”

He said with respect to the Private Service Providers, there were 30 Corporate Trustees, 49 Pension Fund Managers, 14 Pension Fund Custodians and 1,112 Individual Trustees.

With regards to the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda, Mr Krufi said the vision calls for transforming the nation’s economy.

  • ‘We want Consolidated Savings and Loans Company’ – Defunct savings and loans customers

The customers of the defunct savings and loans and finance house companies have called on the government to set up a Consolidated Savings and Loans Company or a Consolidated Microfinance Company, through which their locked-up funds should be paid.

The group, which is known as Coalition of Affected Savings and Loans Customers (CASLOC), said all their accounts should be “migrated and credited fully there if only the current Banking and Specialized Depositors Act will permit.”

At a press conference in Kumasi, CASLOC said even if their request is not permissible their accounts should be migrated to an existing universal bank or banks, “possibly the Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG).”

According to CASLOC, this is because that is where currently all the payments of affected customers are being paid from.

Against the backdrop that the bailout funds have been capped at GH?20,000, CASLOC in its appeal for the government to also consider migrating them to CBG added that “maybe some restrictions about withdrawals” could be attached to the account for some time, until all the required bailout funds are secured.

CASLOC, which is made up of the customers of the 23 savings and loans and finance house companies whose licenses were revoked by the Bank of Ghana (BoG), if the current trend of payment should continue no customer can tell when he or she will have access to locked-up funds.

Additionally, they noted that it will take the Receiver and his staff about 132 years to finish paying all the locked-up funds of the over 3.3 million customers if it has taken over 3 years to pay just about 80 percent of the 100,000 customers of the defunct DKM Microfinance company.

The Chairman and Secretary of the group, Mr. Kofi Sarpong and Mr. Ezekiel Annor Akagbo, also called on the Council of State, Parliament, the Former Presidents, the National House of Chiefs, among others to help them to retrieve their funds.

  • ‘Locust swarm’ forces Ethiopian Airlines plane to divert

A swarm of what appeared to be locusts forced a passenger plane off its course in Ethiopia, the flight operator says.

Pilots were preparing to land the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Djibouti to Dire Dawa on Thursday when clouds of insects slammed into the plane’s engines, windshield and nose.

They tried in vain to clean the windscreen with the plane’s wipers.

Thirty minutes later the plane landed safely but in the capital Addis Ababa instead, according to reports.

East Africa has been hit by its worst locust invasion for 25 years, which has devastated crops across the region.

Swarms can vary from less than 1 sq km (0.38 square miles) to several hundred. Each square kilometre can contain at least 40 million insects, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

One website reported that the insects were grasshoppers. Aeronews Global has posted a photo of the plane’s nose cone smeared with dead insects: The Ethiopian Airlines flight was on an hour-long journey when it flew through a small swarm. It then encountered a bigger swarm which reduced visibility, reports say.

  • Consumers likely to pay more for fuel in second January pricing window — IES

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) is predicting that oil marketing companies will likely increase the prices of their petroleum products to make up for the marginal price movement of crude oil on the international market.

“Taking into consideration the two percent increment in prices of Crude oil, coupled with the 0.95 percent and 1.01 percent marginal increment in the prices of Gasoil and Gasoline respectively on the international market; the Institute foresees prices of fuel on the local market losing stability,” the energy policy think tank said in a press release.

Read: Withdraw directive on new fuel price increase in 24hrs COPEC to NPA

Currently, the national average price of fuel per litre at the pumps is still pegged at GH¢5.36 for both petrol and diesel after a scheduled increase in their prices in the first weeks of 2020 was averted by the National Petroleum Authority with the application of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy (PSRL).

While the exchange rate performance — a key determinant in the price build-up — improved, the energy policy think tank argues that it would still not be enough to offset the increase in prices of oil on the international market.

  • Ex-pope’s shadow Vatican role in the spotlight

Ex-pope Benedict XVI seems to have broken his silence recently over key Catholic issues and his comments have raised serious questions within the Church about the extent to which there are, in fact, two “men in white” at the Vatican

In 2013, Benedict became the first pontiff to resign in almost 600 years. He chose to be known thereafter as “pope emeritus” and said he would live “hidden from the world” in a former convent inside the Vatican grounds.

While he initially stuck to his promise to carry out a life of quiet contemplation and academic research, he has since weighed in on the explosive issues of clerical sex abuse and whether the priesthood could be opened to married men.

This week, Benedict’s contribution to a book on celibacy was seen as a strategic attempt to undermine his successor Pope Francis and boost the cause of a combative ultra-conservative wing of the Church.

Read:Retired Pope warns against celibacy change

Experts say the problem is that no rules were drawn up to define what role Benedict should play after he stepped down as head of the church.

“There were hints of a problem right from the start”, when Benedict gave up the papal hat but not the postal address, Richard Gaillardetz, Catholic theology professor at Boston College, told the National Catholic Reporter.

“The publication of views on controverted issues, when offered by a man who insists that he too still deserves the title ‘pope’ (albeit pope emeritus), who continues to wear papal garb and who still resides in the Vatican, is deeply problematic,” Gaillardetz said.

Even Benedict’s supporters said he should have used his given name, Joseph Ratzinger, when signing his contribution to the book.

Historian Francesco Margiotta Broglio, head of Italy’s religious freedom commission, told La Stampa that “Ratzinger should neither write nor speak.

Read:Pope says sorry for slapping devotee

“If he continues to go against the reigning pope, he could become an anti-pope”.

    – Putting words in his mouth? –

Benedict’s age and physical frailty — the 92-year old reportedly has difficulty speaking or writing — has prompted some Vatican watchers to question whether he was the author of his published reflections, or whether someone put words in his mouth.

“It seems likely some prelates opposed to Francis have sought to hide their plots in the mantle of the emeritus,” said Massimo Faggioli, theology professor at Villanova University.

The ex-pope said when he resigned that he no longer had the strength of mind or body to carry on. His personal secretary Georg Gaenswein said in 2016 that he was “slowly fading”.

Vatican expert for the Catholic weekly The Tablet, Christopher Lamb, was not the only one to point out that Archbishop Gaenswein — nicknamed “Gorgeous George” by his admirers for his dashing good looks — occupies a crucial, gatekeeper role for the ex-pope.

Read:Pope scraps pontifical secrecy rule over sex abuse

“Benedict’s interventions over the past year have raised questions regarding whether, given his own infirmity… he is being manipulated by persons eager to undermine the current papacy, even if Benedict himself is not,” Gaillardetz said.

Faggioli pointed out that not only was there still no Church law on how to deal with an incapacitated pope, it “evidently also needs a law concerning the situation created by an incapacitated ’emeritus’ and his entourage”.

Experts said the priority should now be to determine the role and functions of a retired pope, with some suggesting that Francis could change canon law, or set up a commission to suggest some new ground rules.

These could include either giving former bishops of Rome a new pastoral role if they are of working age, or allowing them to retire as designated bishop emeritus of Rome but insist they take off the papal regalia and live outside the Vatican.

  • Trump impeachment articles delivered to Senate

Two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump were delivered from the US House to the Senate on Wednesday, setting in motion the trial of the 45th US president.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signed the articles, which charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, before they were ceremonially walked through the Capitol to the Republican-controlled Senate.

“So sad, so tragic for our country, that the actions taken by the president to undermine our national security, to violate his oath of office and to jeopardize the security of our elections, has taken us to this place,” said Pelosi, before using several ceremonial pens to sign the articles.

Read:Pelosi loses Senate Democrats on Trump impeachment delay

Held in blue folders, the articles were delivered to a Senate clerk by officials including the House managers chosen to prosecute the case against Trump, after a message notifying the Senate of the impeachment charges was read aloud on the floor of the chamber.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell then invited House managers to formally read the articles on the Senate floor at noon Thursday.

Later that day at 2:00 pm, US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts will arrive to be sworn in.

“Then the chief justice will swear in all of us senators,” a somber McConnell said on the floor.

The Senate will be converted into a court of impeachment for only the third time in US history.

“The trial will commence in earnest on Tuesday,” McConnell said.

Read:Pelosi says Republicans will pay price for denying impeachment witnesses

“We’ll pledge to rise above the petty factionalism and do justice for our institutions, for our states and for the nation,” he said.

“I’m confident that this body can rise above short-termism and factional fever and serve the long-term best interests of our nation. We can do this, and we must.”

McConnell said the White House would be notified of Trump’s pending trial, and that the Senate will “summon the president to answer the articles and send his counsel.”

Trial expected to last two weeks

Trump is accused of secretly holding up aid to Ukraine between July and September to pressure Kiev to investigate former vice president Joe Biden, the Democratic frontrunner in this year’s White House race.

He was formally impeached on December 18 when the Democratic-controlled House charged him with abusing his power by illicitly seeking help from Ukraine for his reelection.

Read:Democrats add last-minute evidence to Trump impeachment case before Senate trial

The president is also charged with obstruction for holding back witnesses and documents from the House impeachment investigation in defiance of Congressional subpoenas.

Wednesday’s ceremonial procedures mark the end of a weeks-long standoff between House Democrats and the Senate’s Republican leadership over whether to call witnesses in the trial.

Pelosi has demanded witnesses testify, including key Trump administration officials with firsthand knowledge of the president’s efforts to pressure Ukraine which formed the basis of his impeachment.

Republicans say they will only consider witnesses once the initial trial rules are approved and the trial, expected to last two weeks, is underway.

Trump’s conviction in the Senate is highly unlikely as the president’s Republican Party has a 53-47 majority. A two-thirds super-majority of senators is required to find him guilty and remove him from office.

  • About 40% of labour intensive jobs to disappear in two decades

Emeritus Professor Brian H. Roberts, the Director of Urban Frontiers, Australia, an urban systems management consultancy firm, has said 40 percent of the routine labour intensive jobs performed currently will disappear within two decades.

It would be as a result of factors such as the reshoring of industries by developed countries to reduce risks to corruption, supply chains and logistic costs, closeness to consumer markets and knowledge skills.

Read: Statistical Service to roll out labour survey

The world’s economies were increasingly driven by the growth of services and total employment in manufacturing was falling and moving to technology rather than labour-based production, he said.

Prof Roberts said this at the “2020 Ghana Urban Forum” held in Accra by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development with stakeholders on the theme: “Unlocking the Systems of Planning, Connecting and Financing for Secondary and Intermediate Cities to Propel Growth Towards the ‘Ghana beyond Aid’ agenda.”

He said the rate of growth in world trade has fallen from 12.5 percent in 2004 to 2.5 percent in 2019 and would likely continue to fall as reshoring or industries and localized technology based manufacturing was rising.

This would, thus, make it challenging for people to acquire jobs in companies, as technology would be employed to instead to do those works.

“Future economic growth will focus on endogenous (jobs focused around more localized value added services and manufacturing) rather than exogenous growth focused on export.”

By this, Prof Roberts explained that, low labour costs would be an advantage; hence the need for the focus to be on personal services, para-technical and personal technology skills and literacy, quality, transparency and accountability.

Speaking on why development of systems of secondary cities was important, he said, 60 percent of the world’s population lived in rural areas and urban settlements of less than 50,000 people and 20 per cent of the world’s population live in cities of 0.05 percent to one million, many of which are secondary cities.

“If the efficiency of systems of secondary cities’ enabling environments, production and logistics systems were to improve, this could more than double the GDP of many poor cities and rural regions,” Prof Roberts said.

However, he said, there are challenges with developing secondary cities such as the widening of per capita gaps in income, GDP, wealth, employment and poverty between metropolitan regions and secondary cities.

Read: 14 illegal miners arrested at Kenyasi

Others were the growing population in secondary cities in developing economies as compared to metropolitan regions; little or no benefit of secondary cities in globalization and free trade and the high and rising costs of transaction in secondary cities.

Prof Roberts recommended that Ghana created networks regional clusters or corridors of secondary cities and linked local industry within systems of secondary and large cities to add value to national production systems and regional-global exports.

Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said urbanization if not managed properly could pose a threat to the nation, especially in the midst of climate change.

He said it was necessary for the state to ensure equity in the distribution of resources at regional and local levels to foster growth and development.

Mr Sowah said Accra’s population was growing rapidly and needed immediate pragmatic steps by government and the private sector to promote development.

The United striker landed awkwardly after tangling with Wolves full-back Matt Doherty and was replaced by Jesse Lingard in the 80th minute of the game, having come on as a sub himself in the 64th minute.

United went on to set up a fourth-round tie against the winner of the replay between Watford and Tranmere Rovers.

Read:Easy to compare Rashford with Ronaldo Ole

Rashford was the first United player to come on as a substitute before then being substituted himself in the same FA Cup match since Alan Smith against Liverpool in February 2006.

“I didn’t want to play him. I think he got a knock, a knee or something, in his back, but he’s been struggling for a little while,” Solskjaer said of Rashford, who has scored 19 times for United this season.

“That’s why we’ve kept him away (from starting against Wolves), but we needed the win. He was involved in the goal so that was a positive but it backfired.

“He’s a quick healer and he’ll play through some pain, definitely, if he’s capable and it’s not a bad, bad injury, but we’ve seen that he’s struggled lately.

    Read:Rashford unfazed by Ronaldo comparisons

“But that’s been more when he’s been tired. He wasn’t on long enough to be tired so it might be something that just happened there and then.

“He’s been absolutely top this season so we’ll do anything and everything we can to get him fit for Sunday. If he’s not then we’ll play without him.”

Rashford expressed his frustration at having to be substituted, writing on Twitter: “Never want to feel like I’ve let my team-mates, the club and most importantly the fans down so did my very best to carry on tonight and was gutted to come off.

“Top work from the lads to get into the next round.”

  • GES apologises for treating SHS teachers poorly

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has apologised to senior high school teachers for treating them poorly on Monday at the start of a four-day training programme.

More than 200 teachers from the Greater Accra, Oti and Volta Regions who were invited on short notice to attend the training were left stranded on their arrival at the University of Ghana campus in Accra.

rEAD: IMF urges government to introduce more taxes to plug revenue shortfall

The in-service training seeks to equip the teachers to adequately prepare their students ahead of the 2020 WASSCE. It will also give the teachers opportunity to interact with experienced educationists and examiners to boost teaching and learning.

According to the teachers who teach Form 3 core subjects in their respective schools, they were left stranded for hours at the venue by the GES without accommodation and food, and triggering criticisms against the GES.

But the GES in a statement on January 15 admitted there were problems with the organisation of the training and has duly accepted responsibility.

“Management of Ghana Education Service accepts full responsibility for the inadequacies and wishes to sincerely apologise to all participants, teachers and the general public for the unfortunate development,” the statement stated.

It said the issues of “improper and irregular” organisation and administration complained of have since been resolved at the various training centres.

“The necessary steps have been taken and Management can assure the teachers and the general public that the initial challenges encountered at the various training centers have been resolved,” it assured.

According to the GES, the training programmes are running smoothly.

It assured the teachers that such problems will “never re-occur”.

A Chinese Supervisor at Zhongmei Engineering Group Limited, the construction company constructing the Pokuase Interchange has allegedly assaulted one of the Ghanaian workers at the site.

In an interview with the GNA, the Secretary General of the General Construction, Manufacturing and Quarry Workers Union (GCMQWU), Mrs Comfort Agambaa, said she heard on January 7, 2020, that a Chinese supervisor by name Maah assaulted Abubakar Danjima, a worker at the site at Pokuase without any provocation.

She said the case was reported at the Pokuase Police Station and it took the police two hours to locate and arrest the suspect at his hideout at the Ayawaso School of Hope, where he was later granted bail by the police.

Mrs Agambaa said other workers at the site said that they had been going through a lot of intimidation from their Chinese supervisors for some time now and called on the police administration to investigate this assault case thoroughly.

In a related development David Danquah, secretary to the local union in a petition, said the continuous harassment from their Chinese supervisors was making the workers at the site to live in fear——affecting productive and quality services.

He said though the case was still with the police, the victim was sacked after the assault, while the suspect was still at post and demanded that the Chinese supervisor if culpable should be punished and later deported.

“We unionized workers of GCMQWU are demanding for the immediate reinstatement of Abubakar Danjima to ensure industrial peace. We are also calling on the institutions involved to investigate the issue and deport the Chinese supervisor involved,” the petition stated.

  • 60 people injured from plane fuel dumping

Sixty people were treated after a plane dumped jet fuel while returning to the Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday, hitting five elementary schools and one high school.

The incident happened just after noon Tuesday, inspector Sean Ferguson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department told CNN. The most heavily affected school was Park Avenue Elementary in Cudahy, where 20 children and 11 adults reported minor injuries. The school is about 19 miles east of the airport.

The other schools affected were San Gabriel Elementary, Graham Elementary, Tweedy Elementary, 93rd Street Elementary and Jordan High School.

After checking all of the affected schools later Tuesday, hazardous materials experts said there was no more danger, fire department officials said. All schools will be open and operating on their normal schedules Wednesday.

Read:Bus with passengers collides with trailer truck, dozens injured

“With the monitoring devices that we have, there are no explosive limits that are being detected at all, as well as solid or liquid products remaining,” Battalion Chief Jason Robertson said in a news conference, adding that the fire department believes all of the jet fuel has evaporated.

Some people who were hit by the jet fuel Tuesday were decontaminated with soap and water, but no one at any site needed to be taken to the hospital, Sgt. Rudy Perez with the Los Angeles School Police Department said. The schools briefly went through shelter-in-place procedures, but there were no evacuations.

The children were given gowns so they could change out of their clothes, fire department inspector Sky Cornell said, adding there were no reports of injuries from other people in the area.

Justin Guiti, a fifth grader at Park Avenue, was hit by the fuel. He told CNN it sprayed all over him and his friends, even getting into his eye.
“Drops of water were coming down. I thought it was a rainbow, and I looked up, and it was gasoline,” he said.

Read:Three killed, 20 injured in 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Iran

Miguel Cervantes, a sixth grader, was also hit. He said his skin was itchy afterward.

“I thought it was smoke,” he said. “But when it went down, I felt it and it smelled like gas.”

Delta Air Lines said the fuel came from Flight 89, which had just taken off from LAX bound for Shanghai, China, when it “experienced an engine issue requiring the aircraft to return quickly to LAX.”

“The aircraft landed safely after a release of fuel, which was required as part of normal procedure to reach a safe landing weight,” the airline said.
The aircraft is a Boeing 777-200, according to Delta’s website, with 288 passenger seats.

Delta said it is in touch with airport authorities and the LA County Fire Department, and it expressed concern for those who reported injuries.

Read:Lightning kills two; three others injured

A video posted on YouTube shows the plane overhead with white streaks coming from the tips of the wings. Alan De Leon, who shot the video, told CNN he heard a loud whistle, smelled jet fuel and felt irritation in his eyes.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating the incident.

David Soucie, an aviation safety analyst, told CNN there are maximum takeoff and landing weights for aircraft, so in order for a plane with full fuel tanks to land, it must dump the fuel to avoid potentially crashing upon landing.

“There are special fuel-dumping procedures for aircraft operating into and out of any major US airport,” the FAA said Tuesday. “These procedures call for fuel to be dumped over designated unpopulated areas, typically at higher altitudes so the fuel atomizes and disperses before it reaches the ground.”

The Los Angeles Unified School District said its health and safety inspectors were working to ensure the outside areas of the schools are safe for attendance.

  • Five tasks facing Quique Setien at Barcelona

Quique Setien is charged with leading Barcelona to glory on three fronts this season after being appointed as Ernesto Valverde’s successor.

Barca are top of La Liga and into the Champions League last 16, while they begin their tilt at the Copa del Rey against Ibiza next week.

However, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said on Tuesday that Setien had been brought in to give the team a mid-season boost and there are several improvements to be made.

Here, AFP Sport looks at some of the challenges facing the new Camp Nou coach.

    – Tighten up the defence –

Barcelona have already conceded 23 league goals, which is the same record as Real Valladolid in 14th and almost twice as many as both Real and Atletico Madrid.

Read:Barcelona sack Ernesto Valverde and appoint Quique Setien

Their problem has been less about individual mistakes — although there have been a few of those — as a vulnerability to pace on the counter-attack.

Teams have had success hitting Barca on the break and Sergio Busquets has too often been exposed in front of the back four.

With Gerard Pique turning 33 next month and Samuel Umtiti still struggling for fitness, there may be a need for signings in the summer.

In the meantime, Setien, who is not known for his defensive principles, must find a way to tighten the team up.

    – Get the best out of Griezmann –

After joining for 120 million euros ($135 million) from Atletico Madrid last summer, expectations for Griezmann were high, especially after the failed pursuit of Neymar.

But the Frenchman has shown only glimpses of his best so far in a Barca shirt, in part because he is yet to be played consistently in his favourite position.

To fit Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez into the front three, Valverde deployed Griezmann on the left and in that way, Setien may have had the problem solved for him.

Read:Barcelona bus gets lost in Saudi Arabia

Suarez’s four-month absence with a knee injury could mean Griezmann finally gets his wish to play down the middle.

    – Banish ghosts of Rome and Anfield –

Valverde and his team never seemed fully to recover from dramatic Champions League collapses against Roma and Liverpool in the last two seasons.

At Anfield, Barcelona’s players looked paralysed by the fear of a repeat of what had happened the year before and Pique admitted the memories quickly came rushing back.

Those weaknesses, including a susceptibility to conceding in streaks and a vulnerability under pressure, have often resurfaced this season.

In November, Barca shipped three goals in seven second-half minutes to lose to Levante while the two late goals conceded against Atletico last Thursday proved the final straw for Valverde.

Setien will have to finally cure his players of their mental block.

    – Unleash a more attacking style –

Setien is a purist and his appointment should come as a relief to those fans, and perhaps players, who had grown tired of stodgy performances under Valverde.

Nostalgia for the free-flowing football played by Pep Guardiola’s crop weighs heavy.

Read:Messi on Hazard replacing Ronaldo, being benched & why Barcelona love playing at the Bernabeu

Yet the likes of Messi, Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Frenkie de Jong, Arthur Melo and Jordi Alba mean there is still no shortage of creative talent in the squad and Setien should enjoy matching them with his own attacking beliefs.

“Players enjoy football much more with the ball at their feet than running after it,” he said last year, which should be music to the ears of Barca’s players.

    – Give youngsters a chance –

Setien has a reputation for giving youngsters an opportunity and he will be reunited with Junior Firpo, whom Barca bought after Setien helped him flourish at Betis.

But Firpo struggled for opportunities under Valverde, who seemed reluctant to give some of La Masia’s talents any consistent minutes in the first team.

Ansu Fati has faded from view after exploding onto the scene at the start of the season while Riqui Puig’s progress has stalled and Carles Alena and Juan Miranda have been sent out on loan.

Making the first team at Barcelona is a formidable task but the potential would appear to be there in the academy, if Setien is brave enough to find it.

  • Barcelona seek second loan move for Kevin-Prince Boateng after Suarez injury

Barcelona are considering a move back for Fiorentina forward Kevin-Prince Boateng following a long-term injury to Luiz Suarez.

Spanish newspaper Marca is reporting that the 32-year-old has emerged on the roaster of the Catalan giants.

They are considering a second loan spell as a replacement for the injured Uruguayan.

Read:Kevin-Prince Boateng opens up on experience at Barça

Suarez was operated on Sunday for an external meniscus injury on the right knee, according to the Catalans.

The striker has been ruled for a minimum four month for a man who has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 23 matches in the current season.

The club is in the market looking for a replacement and have identified the Ghanaian as a possible replacement.

Kevin Boateng spent six month uneventful loan spell from Sassuolo at the club last year.

Barca could use summer signing Antoine Griezmann in a central role, but with no real other centre-forward apart from Suarez at the club, the Catalans will now look to bring in a striker this January.

It has also been speculated that Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez is one option, but the Argentine has an €111million release clause and that might be prohibitive at this time of the season.

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, who is out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain, could be another alternative, it has been claimed in the Spanish media.

  • Chelsea drop interest in Ake and Wilson

Chelsea are unlikely to exercise their £40m buy-back option for Nathan Ake and will not be bidding for Bournemouth team-mate Callum Wilson.

The Blues have been scouting former defender Ake and watching striker Wilson but are now focusing their attention on other targets during the January transfer window.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with Ake, who played at Stamford Bridge from 2011 to 2017, with the Blues having a £40m buy-back option on the Netherlands centre-back.
