  • Begoro rehabilitation centre reeling under massive challenges

The Begoro Salvation Army Rehabilitation Centre is one of the very few Rehab centres in Ghana providing subsidized Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services to persons with varied disabilities particularly for the poor who are economically disadvantaged and whose access to other sources of health care is restricted.

The facility is, however, reeling under serious challenges.

The rehab centre established over three decades ago is facing financial challenges and high staff attrition due to government delay in releasing financial clearance to employ physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.

Read: Rehabilitation of Salaga water system to be completed by January 2020

The centre has over the years been depending on donor supports but that has reduced drastically, affecting the operation of the centre.

According to the Administrator of the Rehab Center, Nana Ato Hayford, “Our major challenge is the exit of some of our key personnel because the government has not given them Financial Clearance that has been a very big blow to us. So technically we need more technical staff to come and handle the kids for us.”

He added “also inadequate funding for ruining the place. For the past three years, we have been fighting to get funding but not forthcoming.”

The Administrator appealed for inclusion of cerebral palsy in health insurance while urging District Assemblies to use part of the disability fund to ensure children with disability locked up and hidden in rooms are admitted in rehabilitation centres adding there are so many superstitions and misconceptions about children with disability which the facility is trying to correct through outreach programs.

“As we speak, there are three children locked up in rooms in some communities that the families are reluctant to admit them,of course, the financial challenge is a factor”.

“But what we have noticed is that most parents send their children to Prayer camps, fetish priests etc so by the time they come here they are financially handicap. The National Health Insurance does not cover conditions we handle here. Children with Cerebral palsy are not covered so still pushing they include it”

The financial challenges of the facility is affecting its quest of providing assistive devices like canes, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, surgery support among others in a very highly subsidized cost for the poor.

    Upsurge in Cerebral Palsy admission

Experts at the facility have expressed concern over the increasing incidence of cerebral palsy among Ghanaian Children.

Read: We will rehabilitate Ho-Aflao road Road Minister

Children with the condition constitute the highest percentage of admission at Begoro Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center.

An Occupational Therapist at the facility, Paulina Nyarkotey explained to Starr News “the exact cause is unknown but there are risk factors. When there is prolonged labour, the more the child is being delayed in coming out then the brain is being denied oxygen which causes brain damage.

“Sometimes too when the child gets jaundice, convulsion- that child is at risk of getting cerebral palsy. Again, when the mother gets infections during pregnancy or bleeds during pregnancy that one too can cause cerebral palsy if the child is also born prematurely.”

Research indicates that 1 in 4 children with the condition cannot talk. Also, 1 in 4 cannot walk, 1 in 2 have an intellectual disability while 1 in 4 have epilepsy.

She said, in spite of the complexity of the condition, it does not necessarily affect intelligence or cognitive ability, neither does it deteriorate by age.

She, therefore, urged parents with Cerebral Palsy children not to lock them up in rooms rather admit them in rehab centres.

  • Three African countries halt polio outbreaks

Kenya, Mozambique and Niger have curbed polio outbreaks that erupted in different episodes over the past 24 months, allowing them to regain their polio-free status, World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.

Transmission of vaccine-derived poliovirus was detected in the three countries in 2018 and early 2019, affecting a total of 14 children.

“Ending outbreaks in the three countries is proof that response activities along with high quality immunization campaigns and vigilant disease surveillance can stop the remaining outbreaks in the region,” said Dr Modjirom Ndoutabe, coordinator of WHO-led polio outbreaks Rapid Response Team for the African Region.

“We are strongly encouraged by this achievement and determined in our efforts to see all types of polio eradicated from the continent. It is a demonstration of the commitment by governments, WHO and our partners to ensure that future generations live free of this debilitating virus,” added Dr Ndoutabe.

Read:Red Cross alarm over polio outbreak in Philippines after 19 years

Vaccine-derived polioviruses are rare, but they affect unimmunized and under-immunized populations living in areas with inadequate sanitation and low levels of polio immunization. When children are immunized with the oral polio vaccine, the attenuated vaccine virus replicates in their intestines for a short time to build up the needed immunity and is then excreted in faeces into the environment where it can mutate. If polio immunization coverage remains low in a community and sanitation remains inadequate, the mutated viruses will be transmitted to susceptible populations, leading to emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses.

No wild poliovirus has been detected anywhere in Africa since 2016. This stands in stark contrast to 1996, a year when wild poliovirus paralysed more than 75,000 children across the continent. However, some countries are currently facing outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus.

To end outbreak activities in an affected country, national and regional disease surveillance and laboratory teams need to confirm that no polio transmission is detected in samples collected from paralysed children, children in contact, and the environment for at least nine months.

Read:No yellow fever, polio vaccination, no entry Saudi Arabia

Response to the polio outbreak requires a strong multisector collaboration. In these efforts, WHO with other Global Polio Eradication Initiative spearheading partners: United Nations Children Fund, Rotary International, US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other stakeholders have been supporting the governments of affected countries in implementing measures to end the transmission of the poliovirus.

Countries still experiencing outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus in Africa are: Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Zambia. The risk factors for these outbreaks include weak routine vaccination coverage, vaccine refusal, difficult access to some locations and low-quality vaccination campaigns, which have made immunization of all children difficult.

Countries of the region experiencing outbreaks should ensure their routine immunization system is robust as they continue to implement outbreak response, following internationally-agreed guidelines and strengthening surveillance activities to rapidly detect any further cases. To successfully implement the outbreak response required, the engagement of government authorities at all levels, civil society and the general population, is crucial to ensure that all children under the age of five are vaccinated against polio.

Read:GHS to begin round two of Polio vaccination in December

Polio is a viral disease, that is transmitted from person to person, mainly through a faecal-oral route or, less frequently, through contaminated water or food, and multiplies inside the intestines.

While there is no cure for polio, the disease can be prevented through the administration of a simple and effective vaccine. That is why efforts are underway across every country to rapidly boost immunity levels in children, and protect them from polio paralysis.

I let them in because I could see that they had house breaking tools. So started that ordeal twenty years ago! They hit my shoulders with Monday hammers and my arms went numb and limp. That removed any notion of physical fight. I employed my mental Wiles. So I want into stare and silent mode. Kneel down, one of them barked, I ignored him, he shot at my knee in his effort to get me down, the local pistol jumped in his hand and the bullet was way off. Oh I had odeshi was their conclusion. Another aimed a machete at my forehead, it didn’t cut because the machete twisted as it landed. It was a glancing blow! Odeshi again. And then they pummelled with sticks and planks since I was odeshied. They were in my house from that 1am till 5am, being political thugs from high quarters, they were in no hurry because they knew no one will disturb them. Truly, no help came except the One from above. They left me for dead but soon as they left, I gave them time to be sure they were gone and then I drove myself to the hospital! That is my experience at Calabar at the hands of political assassins, but here I am, twenty years later, alive, well and vibrating. My attackers, I hear that they are all dead and gone. • Ghana’s tax system is unfair to the poor – Group

Ghana’s tax system has been described as unfair to the poor as it places huge burden on them in terms of revenue mobilisation compared to the rich.

Dr Steve Manteaw, Co-Chairperson of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, who stated this, mentioned the value added tax saying it was not a good instrument for addressing inequality because it made the poor and the rich to pay the same prices for goods, a situation, which further widened the inequality gap in the country.

He was making a presentation at a capacity building workshop on tax and public financial management reporting for media organised by the Tax Justice Coalition, Ghana with support from the Open Society Initiative for West Africa.

The two-day workshop held over the weekend in Accra, was to build the capacity of the media to help improve the state of public financial management and revenue mobilisation, and how the revenues so mobilised were utilised.

Dr Manteaw argued that the poor were rather contributing more in terms of taxes for national development adding subsidies in the energy sector, meant to cushion the poor, rather tended to benefit the rich compared to the poor.

He expressed the need for a tax system that ensured that people paid taxes based on their abilities to help address inequality in the country.

He also called for efforts to block loopholes that allowed especially big and multinational companies to avoid taxes using transfer pricing amongst other accounting systems to increase revenue mobilisation.

Mr Leonard Shang-Quartey, Coordinator of Tax Justice Coalition, Ghana assured of more collaboration with the media to strengthen their capacity on issues of tax justice to improve media coverage of the sector.

Some of the participants said while tax avoidance was not a crime, the processes leading to it such us over-invoicing and under-invoicing amongst others were crimes and must be singled out for prosecution to help curb the practice for the country to increase revenue mobilisation.

Various parts of Ghana have seen periods of heavy rain from 13 May 2019.

Days of heavy rain in north-eastern Ghana and bordering areas of Burkina Faso have caused devastating flooding in the Upper East Region.

The affected districts include Bolgatanga, Kassena-Nankana Municipal (Navrongo),

Kassena Nankana West, Bawku Municipal, Builsa North, Builsa South, Binduri, Talensi, Garu-Tempane and Bongo.

Media reports also suggested that between 1,000 and 4,000 buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged, including almost 2,000 in Kassena-Nankana Municipal, which includes the town of Navrongo and 830 in the Bongo district.

Spillage from the Tono Irrigation Dam has left 844 hectares of farmland under water in Kassena-Nankana Municipal.

The high death toll was disputed by the government Minister Salifu Saeed, who visited affected areas.

He said 17 people were confirmed dead in the recent flooding in the region and “urged the public to disregard the early publication that said over 27 people had died.”

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) said it is sending relief items to support communities affected by floods in the Upper East Region.

Even though the downpour was without the characteristic force that had occasioned many flood situations in the country, it rendered many streets impassable, leaving in its wake heaps of debris of mainly plastic materials as the waters forced their way through choked drains.

Apart from motorists encountering difficulties in driving in the rains, they also had to endure heavy traffic situations at some intersections.

“The Minister for Special Development Initiative told me some of the ambulances were in and asked if she should distribute them and I said no; she shouldn’t. She should wait for the others to come in so that we can distribute all at the same time…

“Fortunately for us all of them will be in by the end of this month and on the 6th of January, I will commission them and the distribution will take place simultaneously and nobody will accuse me of favouritism, and so on.

“There is no justification on they being parked but if I was to send it here and not here, I think you know the kind of discourse that will come,” he stated.

  • 11 horrible body language habits that are hard to quit but you’ll be glad you did

It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.

It’s a cliché, but it’s true. Body language is a crucial part of communicating. The way you act can warp the entire meaning of what you’re saying.

That being said, bad body language habits are the often hardest habits to break. We become so accustomed to slouching, averting our eyes, or folding our arms that we barely even notice what we’re doing.

Here are several body language mistakes that are going to be tough to ditch. Still, if you’re able to quit them, you’ll definitely thank yourself later.

Fidgeting If you’ve gotten into the habit of fidgeting, it can be difficult to snap out of it. But it’s important to take steps to reigning in this nervous habit.

Read:5 habits of emotionally wealthy marriages

Fidgeting demonstrates nervousness and a lack of power, as body-language expert and The Power of Body Language author Tonya Reiman previously told Business Insider.

Leave your hair alone. Constantly running your hands across your scalp and twirling your locks is pretty distracting. Plus, as ABC reported, it can damage your hair overtime. It can be hard to quit, so try playing around a stress ball instead of your hair.

Adopting a defensive pose Many people naturally cross their arms or hunch over a bit just because they don’t know what to do with their hands.

However, this posture can make you look uncomfortable, defensive, or untrustworthy.

“You should always keep your hands in view when you are talking,” Patti Wood, a body- language expert and author of “ SNAP: Making the Most of First Impressions Body Language and Charisma,” previously told Business Insider. When a listener can’t see your hands, they wonder what you are hiding.“

Read:13 daily habits that damage the brain

Doing weird things with your hands To gesture or not to gesture? That is the question.

Some people keep too still while speaking, while others flail all over the place.

As The Washington Post reported, behavioural consultant Vanessa Van Edwards notes that using hand gestures while speaking is actually an effective way to engage your audience.

The trick is, avoiding the hand gestures that will trip you up. Don’t point, don’t pretend to conduct an imaginary orchestra (seriously), and don’t get too choreographed.

Shuffling instead of walking Humans are pretty judgmental creatures. We think we can tell a lot about someone based on snap judgments over something as simple as their manner of walking.

Read:10 habits of couples in strong and healthy relationships

BBC reported that how we walk can actually determine our risk of being mugged. Criminals are less likely to target people walking with an air of confidence.

It can be hard to change up your walk once you’ve fallen into bad habits, but it’s important to walk with confidence and coordination. Don’t shuffle through life.

Forgetting to smile Reiman previously told Business Insider that smiling demonstrates confidence, openness, warmth, and energy.

“It also sets off the mirror neurons in your listener, instructing them to smile back. Without the smile, an individual is often seen as grim or aloof,” she explained.

Appearing distracted There’s nothing more irritating than talking to someone who’s clearly not paying attention to you.

Read:The 5 deadliest habits to avoid as you get older

Some people are just naturally distracted or busy, so it can be tempting to check your phone or watch at every available moment. Still, you’ve got to keep this impulse in check when you’re around others. Otherwise, you’ll just come across as a rude and uncaring person.

Slouching Stand up straight. Terrible posture is easy to develop, especially if you’re slouched over a desk for the majority of the day.

Slouching doesn’t just make you look un-confident, writes Catherine New for Psychology Today, it’s also bad for your back. Improve your health and the image you present to the world by standing up straight.

Nonexistent or aggressive eye contact Here’s another body language pitfall where moderation is key.

What Your Body Says (And How to Master the Message) author Sharon Sayler previously told Business Insider that the ideal amount of eye contact should be “a series of long glances instead of intense stares.”

Read:8 simple habits for weight loss to do before bed

Overly long stares can make whoever you’re talking to pretty uncomfortable. On the other hand, averting your eyes indicates disgust or a lack of confidence.

Being too still It’s definitely good not to be jumping all over the place, constantly. However, you don’t want to be too eerily calm during conversations. This may make people feel uneasy, or that you’re not interested in what they’re saying.

Instead, try to mirror the person you’re speaking with. Don’t mimic them – they’ll probably get offended by that – but subtly copy some of their gestures and expressions.

Writing for Psychology Today, Dr Jeff Thompson notes that mirroring will leave people perceiving you as positive and persuasive.

It can be tough to break out of your poker face, especially if you’re just naturally not that expressive – but it’s worth trying, since it can improve how you’re perceived.

Read:A relationship therapist breaks down the 10 most common fights couples have

Mismatching verbal and non-verbal communication You might be saying all the right things – but if your body language doesn’t match up with your words, you might end up rubbing people the wrong way.

In fact, researchers at Sacred Heart University devoted an entire study to this phenomenon. Their subjects were married couples, but their finding was pretty universal — when verbal and non-verbal messages do not align, “nonverbal signals carry the brunt of the emotional message.”

  • Bill Cosby’s spokesman calls Eddie Murphy a ‘Hollywood slave’

A spokesman for Bill Cosby has fired back at Eddie Murphy after the comedian made jokes at Cosby’s expense during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.

Murphy compared his current situation to Cosby’s, who’s serving three to 10 years in prison after being found guilty in April 2018 on three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his home in 2004. Earlier this month, a Pennsylvania appeals court upheld the conviction.

“But if you would have told me 30 years ago that I would be this boring, stay-at-home … house dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail,” Murphy said to laughter, “even I would have took that bet.”

Read:Eddie Murphy is going to be a dad for the 10th time

“Who is America’s Dad now?” Murphy added, impersonating Cosby’s Cliff Huxtable, the sitcom character who was once often referred to as America’s Dad.

In a statement released Sunday, Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt criticized Murphy for the jokes, saying it was Cosby who “broke color barriers in the Entertainment Industry” so that Murphy and other comedians like Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart could perform.

Murphy’s jokes were “disparaging,” the statement said, adding, “One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation, so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave.”

Read:Bill Cosby loses appeal after sexual assault conviction

Wyatt’s statement then appeared to accuse Murphy of perpetuating racial stereotypes by saying he was “cooning” and comparing him to Stepin Fetchit, the stage name of actor Lincoln Perry, who embodied racist cliches.

“Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming click bait,” Wyatt’s statement said.
“Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation,” the statement said, “in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together.”

CNN has reached out to Murphy’s representatives for comment but has not heard back.

  • SEC to amend regulatory requirements of fund managers

Following revocation of licences of some failed investment firms, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is set to amend its regulatory requirement of fund managers.

According to the Director of the SEC, Paul Ababio, there are some regulatory challenges in the current licensing regime that are not up to standard, hence the need for the regulator to amend them to ensure a smooth administration of all fund management funds.

“There will be a few things, one is the qualifications of the people of the key persons involved, one is to also look at a fit and proper criteria to ensure that people have not been accused of embezzlement or have headed failed institutions in which they have been part of the failure. We will also be looking at situation where one they have the right resources in terms of capital, not just paper capital but real capital in the business.

He added that “we will also differentiate the licensing requirements so in the past it was almost like one side fits all, about GHS100,000 was the capital requirement; now we are able to differentiate it, so for fund managers it will be about GHS2 million, for broker dealers we are talking about GHS1 million and so on and so forth, for exchanges and custodians there will be a different level so there will be a differentiated capital requirements for all the operators in the market.

The SEC on November 8, 2019 revoked the licences of 53 Fund Management Companies for failing to meet regulatory requirements, particularly being illiquid. This was pursuant to Section 122 (2) of the Securities Industry Act, 2016 (Act 929).

It said the revocation of the licences of the specified companies has become necessary as they have largely failed to return client funds which remain locked up and in a number of cases, they have even folded up their operations.

President Akufo-Addo and his colleague Heads of State in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have vowed to tackle the threat of terrorism in the sub-region.

ECOWAS leaders made the firm resolution when they met in the Nigerian capital of Abuja for the fifty-sixth (56th) Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

In his welcome remarks as host of the session, Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari said the latest terrorist attack in Niger that claimed over thirty-three (33) lives is enough reason for the entire ECOWAS to rise and deal with the phenomenon ones and for all.

“Terrorism remains a major threat to the peace and progress of our region. Recurring attacks by terrorist groups reminds us of the urgency to build an enduring security partnership to confront and deal with the evil of cross-border terrorism” Buhari said.

Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, in his address to the ECOWAS Heads of State noted that the spreading attacks in the West African region is of great concern to the UN.

You have the opportunity to dispassionately review the past, identify the challenges and take corrective measures that deepen the integration process and bring you closer to your vision of an ECOWAS of peoples not an ECOWAS of States” Dr. Ibn CHAMBAS noted.

  • Five arrested for attack on mosques in Ethiopia’s Amhara region

Five people suspected of burning down four mosques in Ethiopia’s Amhara region have been arrested, a regional spokesman said, as rising inter-communal and ethnic violence threatens political reforms initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

“Five people who are suspected of leading and organising the attacks have now been arrested,” Getnet Yirsaw, the Amhara state spokesman, said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

State-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported on Saturday that a number of mosques were attacked and that “other properties were destroyed” in Mota town, more than 350 km (217 miles) north of the capital, Addis Ababa.

“Attempts by extremists to breakdown our rich history of religious tolerance and coexistence have no place in the new prosperity focused Ethiopia,” Abiy, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said in a statement posted on his Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Read:Ethiopia arrests inciters of violence in universities

“I condemn such acts of cowardice and call upon all peace loving Ethiopians to draw upon our deep knowledge of coexistence and our reservoir of respect,” the statement added.

Fana also said one church was attacked.

    Religious strife
While ethnic violence has been a persistent problem under Abiy, recent unrest appears to have been at least partly motivated by religion.

During several days of violence in the Oromia region in October that killed more than 80 people, attacks on both mosques and Orthodox Christian churches were reported.

Read:Last remains of Ethiopian plane crash victims buried, families say little notice given

Yet analysts caution that conflicts that appear to be rooted in religion are often also shaped by disputes over land use, ethnicity and other issues.

Muslims make up about one-third of Ethiopia’s population of 110 million, second only to Orthodox Christians at 40 percent, according to the last census which was conducted in 2007.

But Muslims are vastly outnumbered in Amhara, the country’s second-most-populous region where Orthodox Christians make up more than 80 percent of the total.

The attacks on the mosques were condemned by the Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Fana reported.

  • Death toll in India’s citizenship law protests hits 23

The death toll in protests in India against a contentious citizenship law seen as anti-Muslim has reached 23, as nine more people were killed on Saturday in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Fifteen people have died in the state during the protests so far, police spokesman Praveen Kumar said, adding that a “majority of the dead are young people”.

    Most deaths in BJP-ruled state

“Some of them died of bullet injuries, but these injuries are not because of police fire. The police have used only tear gas to scare away the agitating mob,” Kumar said.

He said around a dozen vehicles were set on fire amid protests in the districts of Rampur, Sambhal, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor and Kanpur, where a police station was also torched.

India’s most populous Uttar Pradesh state, home to 204 million people, is controlled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Read:Imported for my body: The African women trafficked to India for sex

An anti-terror squad was deployed and internet services were suspended for another 48 hours in the state.

On Friday, six people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed during the protests in the state with a large Muslim population.

Police said on Saturday that over 600 people were taken into custody. In addition, five people were arrested and 13 police cases filed for posting “objectionable” material on social media.

Police have imposed a British colonial-era law, called Section 144, which bans the assembly of more than four people statewide. The law was also imposed elsewhere in India to thwart an expanding protest movement demanding the revocation of the citizenship law.

In an advisory issued on Friday night, India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asked for “strict compliance” by the country’s broadcasters in reporting content that could inflame further violence.

    Protests across India

Thousands of demonstrators, including students and a large number of women, have vowed to keep up their fight until the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed last week, is revoked.

Read:Network that lures women to India as sex workers for African men exposed

CAA provides a fast-track route to citizenship to “persecuted” Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Buddhists, Jains and Christians from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, but excludes Muslims.

Critics say the law is aimed at marginalising India’s 200 million Muslims and is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist agenda, a claim the BJP denies.

As day broke in the capital New Delhi on Saturday, demonstrators held up their mobile phones as torches at India’s biggest mosque Jama Masjid. The area witnessed violent protests on Friday evening.

In Patna in the eastern state of Bihar, three demonstrators suffered bullet wounds and six were hurt from stone-pelting after clashing with counter-protesters, police said.

An all-women protest was held in Assam state’s Guwahati city in the northeast, where the wave of protests started amid fears the immigrants would “dilute” their local cultures.

Six people died in Assam – four in police firing – where the protests first started, spreading to other areas including the southern city of Mangaluru where two people were killed on Thursday.

    ‘Not a sectarian protest’

The backlash against the CAA marks the strongest show of dissent since Modi was first elected in 2014.

Read:Rogue elephant named after Bin Laden kills five Indian villagers

“What is interesting is that a lot of the violence and deaths that have been happening have been in areas governed by the BJP or BJP-aligned parties,” Al Jazeera’s Subina Shrestha said, speaking from the Indian capital.

“Some members of the coalition government have been giving out inciting statements, while others in the coalition are saying that this law is ill-timed,” she said, adding that the mass demonstrations across the country have not been “sectarian” in nature.

“A lot of these people are students, civilians who have come to the streets in solidarity with the Muslims. They are now talking about a constitutional crisis, an existential crisis and the fundamentals of which India’s constitution is based on.”

Rights activists in Uttar Pradesh said local policemen were conducting raids on their houses and offices to prevent them from planning fresh demonstrations.

    Discriminating against Muslims

Tarun Khaitan, professor of law and legal theory at the University of Oxford, told Al Jazeera that the BJP government “has been chipping away at India’s constitutional fundamentals” since it came to power in 2014.

Read:Modi declares India open defecation free, claim questioned

“But this act does it so blatantly and so expressly that there is no plausible deniability,” he said.

Khaitan said the law is a threat to the Indian democracy “because for the first time in India’s democratic, independent history, we are going to write religion as a qualification into our citizenship laws”.

He said the protesting Indians have decided it is upon them to save the country’s “pluralistic, secular, democratic constitution”.

In its response to criticism, the BJP government says the law will not impact any Indian citizens, including Muslims.

“I appeal to our Muslim brothers not to fall for lies being spread by opposition parties,” federal Minorities Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

The BJP would launch a 10-day campaign to reach out to individual families to explain the law, party spokesman Bhupender Yadav said.

Mr Edwin Ekow Blankson, the Chief Fire Officer of the GNFS, who revealed this said, as at November 2019 the total number of fire responded to, was 4,593 as against the 4,957 recorded in 2018.

It was on the theme; “Give Thanks to God in All Things.”

He said the Service did not also record mass casualties like previous years.

Mr Blankson noted that education on fire safety issues and causes of fire outbreaks led to the reduction and that in spite of this, they would intensify the educational drive to further reduce these occurrences.

He said the Service, for this reason is in collaboration with Infrared Imaging Solutions (IRIS) to assist in the inspections and investigations to ascertain likely spots or defects on buildings that are likely to cause fires.

“We have also linked up with University of Cape Coast (UCC) Forensic Department to assist us unravel causes of certain fire outbreaks, especially ones that are suspected to have criminal motives,” he stated.

He urged all to be fire ambassadors where ever they find themselves to make this year’s Christmas celebration fire free.

He said it was necessary to curtail fire in all aspects to save lives and property.

“As we celebrate the birth of Christ, let us do everything in moderation because the life style we live can make and unmake us,” he stated.

Outlining some of the Service achievements for the year 2019, CFO said the service has exceeded the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) target set by the Ministry of Finance by 6.6%.

Also three officers have been sponsored to the Central Lancashire University in the United Kingdom to pursue a master’s degree in fire safety management, he said.

He assured that the GNFS would have best facilities in the history of the Service by 2020 and all court issues would also be resolved.

He appealed to residents to assist the Service to maintain the progress made in fire prevention to ensure that the menace of fire outbreaks would be reduced drastically.

She also advised the officers to enjoy the festive season and ensure that their families were happy.

The thanksgiving service featured prayer intercessions for good leadership, peace, God’s guidance for families of deceased officers, divine blessings and protection, prayer for the Chief Fire Officer and directors and for the good of the nation.
