Madam Cecelia Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water resources, said this at the Eighth National Development Forum on the Sustainable Management of Ghana’s Sanitation, which was held in Accra last night.

The Minister also said it was important for everyone to treat their surroundings with care, and realise that refuse that were disposed carelessly, would not automatically disappear, but would only contribute towards destroying the environment.

Madam Dapaah said her ministry was putting in basic measures to promote good sanitation, such as the one house one refuse bin policy,

She said there was a deployment of refuse bins for pedestrians, adding that out of a target of 20,000 bins to be deployed, 5,100 had already been placed at vantage points.

The minister said plans were afoot to establish the National Sanitation Authority, which would be highly instrumental in ensuring proper management of sanitation in the country.

  • Man found dead in a freezer with a note saying his wife was not responsible

When Jeanne Souron-Mathers died in November, police in Tooele, Utah, were startled to find the body of her husband Paul in a chest freezer at the couple’s home.

That wasn’t all. Police also discovered a notarized letter from Paul stating that his wife was not responsible for his death, according to a search warrant unsealed this week.

Investigators now believe that Paul Mathers died a decade ago and are investigating the possibility that monthly payments to him from Veterans Affairs and Social Security kept coming in after his death.

Sgt. Jeremy Hansen of the Tooele Police Department said investigators have filed subpoenas and are still awaiting financial records. The VA payments would total at least $177,000, Hansen said.

Paul Mathers is believed to have died between February 4, 2009 and March 8, 2009, Hansen said. He had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and was being treated at a local Veterans Affairs medical center, Hansen said, and was last seen there on February 4, 2009.

But before he died, Paul Mathers wrote a letter stating his wife was not responsible for his death, and that letter was notarized in December 2008, the search warrant said.

  • Akufo-Addo was misled, none of us has received any payment – Private Healthcare providers

The Upper East Regional Chapter of the Private Healthcare Providers Association has dismissed claims that they were paid five months arrears this year.

According to them, President Akufo-Addo’s comment that the government has settled five months arrears owed healthcare providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme for the year 2019 is not true.

The President at the recent media engagement said the government has paid NHIS claims up to the month of May 2019.

But members of the region said none of their members has been paid the said claims.

The immediate past regional president of Private Healthcare Providers Association Thomas Moh in an interview with Citi FM said the President was misled.

“This most of the Private Healthcare Providers have received only one-month payment and they are some who have not received even one month this year, and if anyone doubts I can give you the number of private healthcare providers and find out from them, so it is not true.”

Private healthcare providers give Gov’t 2-weeks ultimatum to pay NHIA debt

Private healthcare providers in the country in August gave the government a 2-week ultimatum to pay the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) debts owed them.

According to the private companies, known as the Responsive Healthcare Service Providers Association of Ghana and the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana, the debts owed them accrued over a 10-month period.

The Association said the inability of the government to meet their demands will force them to drag the NHIA to court.

According to executives of both groups, their members have been dragged to court by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Social Security National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) due to their inability to fulfill their obligations to these regulatory agencies while their monies are locked up with the NHIA.

Read: Cash and carry returns from December 16

    The Executive Director for the Responsive Healthcare Services of Ghana, Joseph Christian Amoah who addressed a news conference in Kumasi said;

“Our members are being taken to court by GRA, SSNIT and other regulatory authorities. We are in the procurement business and we deduct from source and for 10 months to a year a provider is not reimbursed and as a result of this ill act, it happens that our members are financially bankrupt. Some are ill, others are dead, others are threatening to shut down. It does not enhance the private government partnership in health. We are giving the government two weeks to advise NHIA to pay for for us. We will perhaps meet with our counsel and test the law.”

  • Coup plot: Evidence will shake the nation Prosecution

The State is readying itself to present evidence against ACP Benjamin Agordzo and nine others who are standing trial for their involvement in an alleged coup.

The State prosecutor has said the evidence would shake the nation.

Opposing a bail application by lawyers for the nine persons who have been accused of planning to destabilize the country, state prosecutor, Hilda Craig, however, argued that the state needs time to properly investigate the matter.

Read: Coup plot trial: State prosecutors are abusing their powers Defence lawyer

Lawyers for the nine accused went to the high court to seek bail for their clients arguing the state is unreasonably delaying the case because of lack of evidence.

Lead counsel, for the nine, Kojoga Adawudu, argued his clients have highly respectable individuals in society to stand for surety.

He told the court the Ghana Armed Forces has its own arrangements to handle the military men involved in the case, an arrangement he insisted will check the accused from jumping bail.

He further argued, the state so far has not exhibited good faith in the case and the processes presented to the court show that the state has no evidence against the accused, therefore delaying the case unreasonably.

But state prosecutor, Hilda Craig insisted if the accused are granted bail they will temper with evidence especially the military men who have stated in their application that the charges preferred against on them are trump up, claiming the trial is being instigated by one Sergeant Sule Awal who is also a military officer.

She said if they are granted bail, they will target Sergeant Awal and temper with evidence.

She appealed to the court to dismiss the bail application because the state needs time to do a thorough investigation which also involves a lot of work due to the number of persons involved in the case.

Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa adjourned ruling for the application to December 20.

Moves are being initiated by rice millers in the country to get special identification stickers to differentiate Ghana rice from those imported.

The Convener of the Rice Millers Association, Yaw Adu Poku, who made this known to Citi News said the move is also to check unwholesome or fake Ghana rice that may be on the market.

Yaw Adu Poku, in a Citi News interview, said the Association is collaborating with the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to possibly roll out this initiative as the campaign for the consumption of local rice intensifies.

“We have agreed in principle through our umbrella organization, Ghana Rice Inter-professional Bodies together with Food & Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG) to officially write to the GSA that a stamp or some identification should be given to rice in the system and even those that have been imported into the country so that when you go to the market you can see the stamp. This will immediately differentiate between the rice produced internally and those that come in through the main ports,” he said.

The CEO of Citi FM and Citi TV, Samuel Attah-Mensah, after visiting some rice farms in Northern Ghana about a month ago found out that locally produced rice was stuck at farm gates due to the lack of buyers.

He subsequently appointed himself Ambassador for the promotion of Ghana Rice and began a campaign to drive the consumption of Ghana rice.

This campaign has caught on with many Ghanaians and received widespread endorsements.

Government and financial institutions have stepped in and made commitments to assist those in the local rice production value chain.

  • Trump becomes third US president to be impeached

Donald Trump has become the third US president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives, setting up a trial in the Senate that will decide whether he remains in office.

The House voted on two charges – that the president abused his power and that he had obstructed Congress.

Both votes fell along party lines with nearly all Democrats voting for the charges and all Republicans against.

As voting took place, President Trump was addressing a campaign rally.

He told the crowd in Battle Creek, Michigan: “While we’re creating jobs and fighting for Michigan, the radical left in Congress is consumed with envy and hatred and rage, you see what’s going on.”

The White House released a statement saying that the president was “confident that he will be fully exonerated” in a Senate trial.

Read:Trump declines to attend impeachment hearing

The proceedings on Wednesday began with members of Mr Trump’s Republican Party calling for votes on procedural issues in an effort to frustrate the process.

That was followed by a vote on the rules to be set out for the impeachment, which kicked off six hours of partisan debate on the merits of the two impeachment charges against President Trump.

At about 20:30 local time (01:30 GMT), the House called for votes on the two charges: first, abuse of power, stemming from Mr Trump’s alleged attempt to pressure Ukraine to announce investigations into his Democratic political rival, Joe Biden; and second, obstruction of Congress, because the president allegedly refused to co-operate with the impeachment inquiry, withholding documentary evidence and barring his key aides from giving evidence.

The vote for the first article of impeachment, abuse of power, was passed 230-197 and the second, for obstruction of Congress, 229-198.

Being impeached places Donald Trump alongside only two other presidents in the nation’s history – Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton – and sets up a trial in the Senate for his presidency.

    A day of hyper-partisanship

And so it is done. Donald Trump now becomes the third member of the exclusive club that no-one wants to be a member of.

But the framers of the constitution with its impeachment provision could never have imagined the hyper-partisanship – on both sides – that has been witnessed during today’s sterile House proceedings. Each side with its own narrative, neither side listening to the other. And one can say with some certainty – I would bet all my yet-to-be-gifted Christmas presents – that it will be much the same once this becomes a trial in the Senate in the New Year.

Donald Trump will be acquitted. He won’t be forced from office. So what changes? Well, Donald Trump will have a place in the history books – and for a man with such a huge sense of self that will hurt. Acutely. But 2020? Far from this being a killer blow against President Trump, it might turbo charge his bid for a second term. The House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was always wary about going down the impeachment route. We’ll discover next November whether that concern was well founded.

During the House debates, Mr Trump tweeted several times, calling the Democratic arguments “ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT” and an “ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!”.

Read:In historic move, U.S. House set to vote to impeach Trump

The Republican Party has a majority in the Senate, making it highly unlikely the president will be removed from office when senators cast their votes. Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell last week said that Republican senators would act in “total co-ordination” with the president’s team during the trial, outraging Democrats who pointed out that Senators are obliged to act as impartial jurors.

    What did House members say?

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened the debate on Wednesday with a speech from the floor of the House.

“For centuries Americans have fought and died to defend democracy for the people, but very sadly now our founder’s vision of a republic is under threat from actions from the White House,” she said,

“If we do not act now, we would be derelict in our duty. It is tragic that the president’s reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice.”

Democratic representative Joe Kennedy, a grand-nephew of President John F Kennedy, used his speech to address his children directly, explaining his decision to vote for impeachment.

“Dear Ellie and James: This is a moment that you’ll read about in your history books,” the Massachusetts congressman said, going on to accuse the president of “using his power as a weapon against his own people”.

Read:House of Representatives impeaches President Donald Trump

Doug Collins, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, accused Democrats of conducting an unfair and illegitimate inquiry.

“This is an impeachment based on presumption. This is a poll-tested impeachment about what actually sells to the American people,” Mr Collins said.

Republican Barry Loudermilk compared the impeachment process to the fate of Jesus Christ. “During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than Democrats have afforded this president in this process,” Mr Loudermilk said.

Democrats were reportedly instructed by Ms Pelosi to treat the process solemnly. She told reporters outside the chamber she was “sad” about the proceedings, and a number of Democrats reflected on their disappointment at being involved in impeachment proceedings.

Across the country in the 24 hours leading up to the vote, pro-impeachment protesters took to the streets. Hundreds of people gathered in Times Square in New York on Tuesday night, chanting: “Tell me who’s above the law? Nobody is above the law!”

A man displays a pro-Trump sign near the Capitol on Wednesday The president had made an extraordinary intervention on the eve of Wednesday’s vote, penning an irate six-page letter to Ms Pelosi accusing her of declaring “open war on American democracy”.

In the letter, which was published by the White House, the president claimed he had been “deprived of basic Constitutional Due Process from the beginning of this impeachment scam”. He was in fact publicly invited by the Democratic chair of the House Judiciary Committee to give evidence, a move that would also have allowed his legal team to question witnesses, but he declined.

  • Bolivia orders arrest of ex-president Morales

Bolivia’s attorney general on Wednesday ordered the arrest of exiled former president Evo Morales after the interim government accused him of sedition and terrorism.

Public prosecutors in La Paz signed a warrant for police to detain the 60-year-old — who is in Argentina — and take him to the attorney general’s office.

Morales fled Bolivia last month after civil unrest broke out following his re-election in an October 20 poll widely dismissed as rigged.

The former trade union leader denounced the arrest order as “illegal, unfair and unconstitutional” on Twitter.

“I’m not worried. As long as I’m alive I’ll continue with greater strength in the political and ideological struggle for a free and sovereign Bolivia,” he said.

Read:Protesters forcibly cut off Bolivia Mayors hair

Morales ruled the South American country for almost 14 years before resigning last month and leaving Bolivia.

He initially received asylum in Mexico and then arrived in Argentina last week.

The allegations against him stem from an audio recording released by Arturo Murillo, the interim government’s interior minister. In the recording, Morales allegedly tells one of his supporters to block trucks and interrupt the food supply to several cities.

Morales was in Mexico at the time, the complaint alleges.

    – Food, fuel shortages –

Murillo began legal action against Morales in November, after weeks of road blocks caused food and fuel shortages in the capital La Paz following his resignation.

The ex-president countered by accusing the interim government of manufacturing the audio to damage him politically.

The controversial October poll in which Morales was re-elected was annulled following an Organization of American States (OAS) audit that found clear evidence of vote rigging.

Right-wing deputy senate leader Jeanine Anez took over as interim president and has vowed to call new elections early next year, although no date has been set.

Read:Mexican government says it is concerned about situation in Bolivia

The interim government has barred Morales from standing in the ballot.

Bolivia’s constitution limits a president to two consecutive terms but Morales stood for a potential fourth term in October.

Ahead of the last two elections, the constitutional court — filled with Morales loyalists — made controversial decisions authorizing him to run again.

His detractors accused him of corruption and authoritarianism.

Speaking from Buenos Aires on Tuesday, Morales pledged to back another candidate from his Movement for Socialism party this time around.

“I’m convinced that we’ll win the next elections. I won’t be a candidate but I have a right to be in politics,” Morales told reporters.

“My obligation now that I’m not a candidate, now that I’m not president, is to accompany candidates so that they can win the elections,” added Morales, who was Bolivia’s first ever indigenous president.

Read:Bolivia president resigns after re-election triggered deadly protests

Previously he insisted he’d been the victim of a coup and has launched near-daily Twitter attacks against Anez and her allies.

Earlier on Wednesday he claimed US President Donald Trump — who hit out against Morales on Tuesday for provoking violence in Bolivia from afar — was behind the “coup.”

  • 22 Fulanis killed at Mampong, Nsuta this year Fulani Association head claims

It has emerged that about 22 nomadic herdsmen, mainly of Fulani descent, were killed at Asante Mampong and Nsuta areas of Ashanti region in 2019 alone.

The Fulani community in the areas disclosed this at a meeting organised by the Municipal Chief Executive of Asante Mampong, Thomas Appiah-Kubi, to find a lasting solution to the fight between the locals and cattle-owning Fulanis.

Read: Man, 71, guns down Fulani robber in Kwahu

The National Secretary of Association of Fulanis, Yakubu Musa Barry, who revealed this said all the incidents of the murder have been reported to police but no arrest has been made so far.

According to him, in the latest incident, three herdsmen were found dead in a bush about two weeks ago under strange circumstances.

“Three herdsmen were recently found dead; we reported to the police yet no arrest has been made; is it because we are Fulanis?” he asked.

Mr Barry, therefore, called on the Municipal Security Committee to intervene to arrest the worrying trend.

He proposed a joint task force of police, herdsmen and the locals to constantly patrol the area to ensure confrontation between herdsmen and farmers do not escalate.

“I am begging the chiefs within the communities to talk to the indigenes to restrain themselves when they notice the animals are on free-range, to avoid bloody clashes with the herdsmen.

On his part, Mr Appiah-Kubi, who chairs the Security Committee, said steps were being taken to ensure a peaceful co-existence between locals and the herdsmen as police investigate the murders.

“We cannot do away with the Fulanis completely because our survival on meat depends on them and same with the farmers here,” he noted.

He promised that the Municipal Security Committee would meet and find a lasting solution to the challenge.

  • Man United cruise into semi-finals

Marcus Rashford had a hand in all three goals as Manchester United beat Colchester 3-0 to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Rashford took advantage of a rare Colchester attack leaving them exposed at the back to beat Dean Gerken after a solo run, and five minutes later had a hand in their second as Mason Greenwood’s cross was turned past Gerken by Ryan Jackson under pressure from the Manchester United forward.

He then set up the third goal to kill the game as a contest soon after when turning Juan Mata’s cross back across goal to provide Anthony Martial a simple finish.

The hosts had struggled to turn their first-half dominance into clear opportunities against a side three divisions below them, but once they found the breakthrough, they added the second and third goals with relative ease to secure a spot in the last four against arch-rivals Manchester City.

Manchester United arrived at Old Trafford acutely aware only a sizeable win would satisfy expectations against a side 61 places below them in the football pyramid, and named a strong team against opponents unbeaten in League Two since mid-October.

Their domination was constant and their residence inside the Colchester half almost endless, but their final ball was very poor in a first half in which Gerken had little of note to worry him.

Colchester have prided themselves on a strong defence this season but Manchester United should still have tested them far more before the break, and only Rashford’s sliced miscue from a floated ball into the box looked like it could have threatened a breakthrough.

  • House of Representatives impeaches President Donald Trump

The deeply divided House of Representatives took the historic step to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday, charging a president with high crimes and misdemeanors for just the third time in American history.

The House voted almost entirely along party lines for two articles of impeachment to remove the President from office — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — sending the case to the Senate for a trial expected to start next month.
The impeachment votes marked the culmination of a sprawling and rapidly moving three-month Democratic investigation into allegations that the President pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals while withholding US security assistance and a White House meeting.
The House voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress. The votes were largely split along party lines: just two Democrats voted against both articles, Reps. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, who is expected to soon switch parties. A third, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted for one impeachment article. Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, voted present for both articles.
Republican-turned independent Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan voted to impeach Trump on both counts.
Trump’s impeachment, which occurred 85 days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the opening of the impeachment inquiry, will have long-lasting ramifications across Washington and beyond. It will undoubtedly shape the legacies of the key players in the midst of it, from Pelosi and her committee chairs who led the impeachment proceedings to Trump and his staunchest defenders in Congress.
It’s a scenario that appeared unlikely just months ago for Pelosi, who had resisted the push for Trump’s impeachment from liberal advocates both inside her caucus and outside Capitol Hill. But then an anonymous whistleblower complaint changed the course of history for both Trump and his chief antagonist at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
“We gather today under the dome of this temple of democracy to exercise one of the most solemn powers that this body can take: The impeachment of the President of the United States,” Pelosi said Wednesday to kick off the impeachment debate on the House floor. “If we do not act now we would be derelict in our duty. It is tragic that the President’s reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice.”
Trump now joins a small club of Presidents who have been impeached by the House for “high crimes and misdemeanors” cited in the Constitution: President Andrew Johnson in 1868 and President Bill Clinton in 1998. President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before impeachment proceedings against him could reach the House floor.
Both Johnson and Clinton were acquitted by the Senate, and there’s effectively zero chance the Republican-controlled Senate will remove Trump from office. But unlike Johnson and Clinton, who were impeached during their second terms, Trump will face reelection less than a year after his impeachment, giving voters the opportunity to have the final word in November 2020.
Trump has insisted he did nothing wrong in his “perfect” July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which formed the basis of the whistleblower complaint. Trump tweeted repeatedly about the impeachment proceedings against him on Wednesday as the House debate unfolded.
“The House Democrats are surrendering the majority, their dignity,” Trump said at a rally in Michigan after learning he’d officially been impeached. “They look like a bunch of fools.”

Pelosi won’t commit to sending articles

Wednesday’s vote shifts the impeachment proceedings to the Senate, where a trial is expected in January. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republican senators at a policy lunch Tuesday that he will announce by the end of the week the date for the start of the Senate trial, according to sources.
But Pelosi, at a news conference after the vote, would not commit to sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, saying “that would have been our intention, but we’ll see what happens over there.”
Democrats say that Trump was impeached because he abused his office by directing a pressure campaign for Ukraine to announce an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, conditioning $400 million in US security aid and a one-on-one White House meeting on the investigation. Then Trump covered up his misconduct, Democrats say, obstructing Congress by stonewalling all the subpoenas from Congress trying to investigate his conduct.
“His conduct continues to undermine our Constitution and threaten our next election,” said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat. “His actions warrant his impeachment and demand his removal from office.”
House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who led the impeachment investigation, said that the President “was willing to sacrifice our national security by withholding support for a critical strategic partner at war in order to improve his reelection prospects.”
“But for the courage of someone willing to blow the whistle, he would have gotten away with it,” Schiff said. “Instead, he got caught. He tried to cheat, and he got caught.”
But congressional Republicans condemned Democrats for rushing to impeach the President, charging that Democrats pushed forward with a partisan impeachment intended to beat Trump at the ballot box in 2020.
“What we’ve seen is a process that’s led to the most partisan and least credible impeachment in the history of America,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“What we’ve found here today is a president who did not do as being charged,” said Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee. “The call itself, the two parties say no pressure. Nothing was ever done to get the money. In fact, they didn’t even know the money was held.”
“The people of America see through this. The people of America understand due process, and they understand when it is being trampled in the people’s House,” said Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee.
“What we’ve found here today is a president who did not do as being charged,” Collins added. “The call itself, the two parties say no pressure. Nothing was ever done to get the money. In fact, they didn’t even know the money was held.”

    Day of intense partisan debate

The intense partisan debate over impeachment played out for hours on the House floor Wednesday on rapid-fire fashion ahead of the impeachment votes. In one-to-two minute speeches, Democrats and Republicans traded passionate arguments for why they were voting for or against impeachment. Back and forth they went: Democrats explaining the duty to impeach, followed by Republicans declaring that impeachment was a massive mistake.
Lawmakers on both sides referenced back to the Founding Fathers, to the history being made with Wednesday’s votes and to the ramifications they were leaving for their children and grandchildren.
The floor fight is the same war that the two parties have waged for the past three months in the closed-door depositions and committee hearings after Pelosi opened an impeachment inquiry on September 24.
The investigation included testimony from 17 officials, 12 of whom appeared in public hearings. They described a months-long campaign led by the President’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to oust former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, followed by a push for Ukraine to announce the investigations that would benefit the President politically.
Several key officials, including acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton, refused to testify. Democrats, however, chalked up the defiance of subpoenas to evidence of congressional obstruction rather than fighting in court to force witnesses to appear — a move that could have prolonged the impeachment inquiry for weeks if not months.
Leading up to Wednesday’s vote, no Republicans signaled they were considering voting to impeach the President. The looming question was whether moderate Democrats — the 31 who represented congressional districts Trump won in 2016 — would support impeachment.
One by one, almost every one of the 31 Democrats said they were compelled to vote for impeachment. Only Peterson, a veteran lawmaker from a deeply red rural Minnesota district, and Van Drew, who signaled he would soon switch parties, said they were opposed to impeachment altogether. Golden split the difference, voting for abuse of power and against obstruction of Congress.
For House Democrats, the next step to prepare for the trial is to name impeachment managers who will prosecute the case in the Senate. Wednesday’s vote also paved the way for the House to approve a resolution announcing the managers — though they aren’t likely to be named until the House sends the articles to the Senate.

  • ‘This is madness – Roads Minister leads team to demolish barricade on Airport road

“This is nonsensical and madness,” Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta fumed on Wednesday when he led a team to the Airport residential area Wednesday.

The Minister led the team to demolish a concrete barricade erected by some Turkish developers who are putting up a 22-storey building in the area.

He also called for the arrest of the contractor working on the project.

  • Australia endures hottest day on record

Australia has experienced its hottest day on record with the national average temperature reaching a high of 40.9C (105.6F), meteorologists say.

The Bureau of Meteorology (Bom) said “extensive” heat on Tuesday tipped the mercury past the previous record of 40.3C set on 7 January 2013.

Taking the average of maximum temperatures across the country is the most accurate measure of a heatwave.

The record comes as the nation battles a severe drought and bushfire crisis.

Forecasters had predicted the most intense heat would come later in the week, meaning the record could be broken again.

Read:Australia weather: January was hottest month on record

As hundreds of fires rage, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been criticised for his response to the natural disasters and his government’s climate policies.

    Why has this happened now?

Australia heated up this week as a mass of hot air swept east across the continent, with meteorologists forecasting “severe to extreme heatwave conditions”.

Several individual heat records for towns and cities have already been shattered. On Tuesday, several areas across the nation’s centre recorded temperatures above 45C.

At the start of the week, Perth, the capital of Western Australia, recorded three days in a row above 40C – a record for December.

The dominant climate driver behind the heat has been a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) – an event where sea surface temperatures are warmer in the western half of the ocean, cooler in the east.

Read:Japan heatwave declared natural disaster as death toll mounts

The difference between the two temperatures is currently the strongest in 60 years. The warmer waters cause higher-than-average rains in the western Indian Ocean region, leading to flooding, and drier conditions across South East Asia and Australia.

But Australia has been enduring a drought for a long time – several years in some places. Bom says the dry soil has meant less evaporation – which would normally exert a cooling influence on the landscape.

What is climate change doing to Australia?

According to Bom, Australia has warmed overall by just over 1C since 1910, with most of the heating occurring since 1950.

Nine of Australia’s top 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 2005.

Officials predicts that 2019, on the temperatures recorded so far, will be among the four warmest years on record. Bom says it’s expecting national mean temperatures to be at least 1.3C above the long-term average of 27.5C.

That heat has helped create the conditions for natural disasters like bushfires, droughts and floods – which have always happened in Australia – to be more frequent and more severe.

Read:Europe heatwave expected to peak and break records again

“Australia’s climate is increasingly influenced by global warning and natural variability takes place on top of this background trend,” says Bom.

Vast areas of the nation are struggling through a second and third year of drought. According to the measurements for 2019 so far, the year has been Australia’s driest in over a century.

Australia’s conservative government has been criticised both at home and internationally for what’s seen as an inadequate climate record and a reliance on coal.

Australia is one of the highest emitters of carbon pollution per capita, largely because it is still heavily reliant on fossil fuel power. The UN has also said it is among the minority of G20 nations falling short on its emissions cuts goals.

As the bushfires, and other natural crises, have raged on there has been growing public anger towards the government’s inaction, and demands for Prime Minister Scott Morrison to properly acknowledge the impact of climate change.

How damaging can heatwaves be in Australia?

Heatwaves are Australia’s deadliest natural disaster and have killed thousands more people than bushfires or floods.

Read:Dangerous heatwave starts hitting US and Canada

Last summer (2018-2019) was recorded as the nation’s hottest on record, as average temperatures soared past 30C (86F) for the first time.

At least five of the days were recorded among the nation’s top 10 hottest on record.

The heat, which was concentrated over one fortnight in January, caused mass wildlife deaths, sparked bushfires and led to a rise in hospital admissions.

It also sparked furious political discussion about the nation’s energy grid, after densely populated city areas were forced to endure blackouts amid the heat.

What does this mean for the fires?

More than 100 blazes are still burning across Australia’s east coast – with the high temperatures escalating dangerous conditions.

Bom and fire authorities warned that the record temperatures had made the fires more volatile and harder to fight.

  • Money supply slows down by 8%

The growth of money supply slowed down in the third quarter of the year, signaling some level of illiquidity in the Ghanaian economy.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the provisional data on monetary aggregates at the end of the third quarter of 2019, broadly reflected considerable moderation in the growth of money supply, consistent with the monetary policy stance.

The annual growth in broad money supply (M2+) slowed from 24.09 per cent a year ago to 16.32 per cent in quarter three of 2019.

Read: Borrow money to organise exams GES to JHS heads in Wa

Broad money is a measure of the amount of money, or money supply, in a national economy including both highly liquid “narrow money” and less liquid forms.

The slowdown in the growth of M2+ during the review quarter, the central bank said, was largely reflected in decreases in the growth of demand deposits, savings and time deposits.

Demand deposits are purely current account and call deposits.

The other components of M2+, comprising currency in circulation and foreign currency deposits, however, showed an increased growth in quarter three of 2019, relative to that of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the currency outside banks or the banking system have hovered around GH¢11 billion throughout the year.

However, the currency in circulation has also hovered around the GH¢12 billion bracket throughout 2019.

It inched up from GH¢12.6 billion in August to GH¢12.9 billion, the highest so far in the year.

On the treasury market, however, interest rates trended upward.

Rates on the 91-day, 182-day T-bills increased by 132 basis points (1.32%) and 110 basis points (1.10%), respectively year-on-year, to settle at 14.69 per cent and 15.14 per cent, respectively.

Read: Calls for tax on mobile money transaction fees untenable Eli Hini

The 364-day bill rate, however, remained broadly unchanged at 17.91 per cent in the review quarter.

The rate on the 2-year fixed note increased by 1.0% to settle at 19.00% in quarter three of 2019 from 18.00% in 2018.

The rates on the 3-year and 5-year government of Ghana (GOG) bonds increased by 2.2% and 3.0%, respectively.

Rates on the 7-year and 15-year government-of-Ghana bonds remained unchanged at 16.25% and 19.75%, respectively.

  • Anthony Joshua: Tyson Fury welcomes sparring offer for Deontay Wilder bout

Tyson Fury says he would “love” to take up Anthony Joshua’s offer of sparring before he faces Deontay Wilder.

Fury, 31, drew with WBC world heavyweight champion Wilder in 2018 and is set for a rematch on 22 February.

Joshua, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBO belts, feels Fury would be more likely to agree to a fight for all four titles and offered to help his fellow Briton.

“I would love to have you in camp, work out for this fight and give Deontay Wilder a proper beating,” said Fury.

Fury offered his “congratulations” to Joshua for his win over Andy Ruiz Jr on 7 December, where he reclaimed his world titles after losing to the Mexican in June.

Joshua says he has already been “studying” Oleksandr Usyk, who he could face in the short term given the Ukrainian fighter’s status as mandatory challenger with the WBO.

    Frank Robinson, 83

    — The pioneering baseball great, who was the first African-American to become a manager in the major leagues, passed away February 7 after suffering from bone cancer. The Hall of Famer won two World Series titles during a glittering career and remains the only player to win MVP awards in both the National League and American League.

  • Courts can sit on weekends, public holidays – Supreme Court rules

The Supreme Court has in a unanimous decision ruled that courts are to sit on weekends and public holidays to deal with issues that affect personal liberty.

This brings to an end the age-long practice where persons are arrested and kept beyond 48 hours because weekends and holidays are not counted.

The seven-member panel presided over by outgoing Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo held that 48 hours means 48 hours.

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu in September 2016 dragged the Attorney General to the Apex court demanding a declaration that portions of the Holidays Act that bars the courts from dealing with cases that affect personal liberty are unconstitutional.

The Chief Justice presided over the panel comprising Justices Julius Ansah, Anin Yeboah (Chief Justice Designate), Baffoe Bonnie, Sule Gbadegbe, A. A Benin, and Prof. Ashie Kotey.

This is her last decision as a Justice of the Highest court of the land.

Reading the judgement, she stated that the portions of the Holidays Act preventing such access to justice are unconstitutional.

The court then rectified the provisions to exempt courts dealing with personal liberty cases as part of those who can work on holidays.

The court ordered that the Chief Justice must within six months designate each Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly with the required number of courts as may be needed to sit on weekends and holidays to deal with cases affecting personal liberty.

The court also ordered that the IGP sensitizes police prosecutors about this decision within six months.

The director of the Judicial Training Institute is also to do the same for Judges and Magistrates.
