  • Inmates behind Brazil deadly prison riot transferred

Forty-six inmates involved in one of Brazil’s deadliest prison riots were being transferred to other jails on Tuesday, an official said.

At least 57 people were killed Monday when fighting broke out between rival drug gang factions in the Altamira Regional Recovery Center in the northern state of Para.

Sixteen were decapitated in the hours-long battle, but most died in a fire that engulfed part of the overcrowded facility that used converted shipping containers to house some of the inmates.

It was the second major eruption of violence to rock the country’s severely overpopulated and deadly prison system in as many months.

Inmates involved in the fighting, including 16 leaders suspected of ordering the riot, were being transported Tuesday by bus or plane to detention facilities, including federal prisons, in state capital Belem, an official from the state government’s penitentiary department told AFP.

Most of the bodies have been recovered from the jail and clean-up operations were under way, she said.

The government is providing financial assistance to the families of the dead to help pay for funerals, she added.

    – ‘Very bad’ conditions –

Experts estimate hundreds of prisoners are killed in Brazilian prisons every year, mostly in confrontations between rival gangs battling for control of one of the world’s most important cocaine markets and trafficking routes.

Monday’s riot was one of the deadliest in Brazil in decades. The turf war involved members of Class A Command and one of the country’s main crime groups, Red Command, officials said.

In May, at least 55 inmates were killed at several jails in the neighboring state of Amazonas, in violence also blamed on an apparent drug trafficking gang dispute.

In 1992, 111 prisoners were killed when security forces put down a mutiny at the enormous Carandiru jail outside Sao Paulo.

Brazil has the world’s third-largest prison population after the United States and China, with 726,354 inmates as of June 2017, according to the latest official statistics released this month.

The population is far above the capacity of the nation’s jails, which in the same year was estimated to be 423,242 inmates.

Around 33 percent of prisoners are pretrial detainees.

Amnesty International said the prison population topped 800,000 this year as it warned of more mass killings “if nothing is done to change the situation.”

“I don’t see much of an end to these massacres,” said Juliana Melo, a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.

Conditions inside the prisons have been described as inhuman, with most inmates poor, black and with little formal education.

The Altamira Regional Recovery Center was no exception.

The National Justice Council, a government agency monitoring prisons, rated conditions inside the jail as “very bad” and said the facility was holding more than twice as many prisoners as it was equipped to handle.

It also had a shortage of guards.

“This problem from hell will not be solved by throwing more prisons at the problem,” said Robert Muggah, research director at the Igarape Institute, a think tank in Rio de Janeiro.

“Since 2018, close to 9,000 prison spaces were built in the country — but the number of new inmates jumped by more than 17,800 over the same period.”

Amuzu, 19, has penned a deal which will see him remain at the club until the summer of 2022.

This ends speculations about his future after being linked with English Premier League sides Southampton and Brighton.

The Belgium youth international came through the club’s academy set-up and has now become a first-team regular.

”With Francis, we have a top talent in our ranks. We are therefore very happy that he has extended his contract. There is a bright future for him at RSC Anderlecht,” Verschueren said after both parties reached a deal.

Amuzu made his debut in 2017 in the first team for RSC Anderlecht.

He has scored two goals and 3 assists in 47 games since his promotion to the senior side.

  • A$AP Rocky pleads not guilty to assault as Stockholm trial begins

American rapper A$AP Rocky pleaded not guilty to assault charges in a Swedish court on Tuesday, on the first day of a trial that has grabbed the attention of US President Donald Trump and the world’s media.

Known for his song “Praise the Lord,” the 30-year-old performer, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was detained almost a month ago following a street brawl in the capital Stockholm on June 30. If convicted, A$AP Rocky, who was charged with assault last week, could face up to two years in prison. On Tuesday morning, Swedish public prosecutor Daniel Suneson read out the charges against the artist and two other men in his entourage. Suneson said they assaulted the victim by kicking and beating him with a whole or part of a glass bottle while he lay on the ground.

The victim told the court he suffered injuries to his arm and head in the fight, as well as broken ribs. “I felt that they would beat me to death,” he said. A$AP Rocky’s lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, maintains his client did not commit any crime. The rapper asserts that he was acting in self-defense when he threw the victim to the ground and stepped on his arm. “Please bear in mind that A$AP Rocky is an international, very well-known artist,” Jovicic said, adding that his client is used to being approached in the street, but that these men were “deeply provoking” and that he acted out of fear. Both members of A$AP Rocky’s crew, Bladimir Corniel and David Rispers, also deny any wrongdoing. Magnus Stromberg, a lawyer for the victim, said his client is seeking 139,700 Swedish krona in damages (about $14,600). The Stockholm District Court was packed with international press and A$AP Rocky’s family members, including his mother, Renee Black, who sat still, staring straight ahead as the charges were read out.

President Trump has appealed for A$AP Rocky’s release, and the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Robert O’Brien, was in court on Tuesday to “support the members of the family and the American citizens.” O’Brien told CNN he wouldn’t go into details about his conversations with the President about the case, but that Trump “has made it very clear that he wants these individuals to come home as soon as possible.”

Some audience members were audibly sobbing and shaking their heads as Suneson showed evidence, including surveillance footage from the burger restaurant where the fight began.

In photos of the crime scene displayed to the court, a broken glass bottle was visible on the street where the brawl took place and a fragment of what appeared to be the same bottle could be seen stuck in A$AP Rocky’s sweater.

“This is a nightmare!” A$AP Rocky’s mother Renee Black (second from left), told the press at the district court in Stockholm. The victim described being “hit” and “stabbed” with broken glass, but Suneson said police did not find any finger prints or DNA on the bottle. Playing a video clip of the exchange, Jovicic argued that the bottle was broken behind A$AP Rocky’s back as he was “occupied with throwing” the victim to the ground. He claimed that glass shards from the bottle could have been caught underneath his client’s shoe, which may have inadvertently cut the victim. Jovicic also referred to transcriptions from the footage, when A$AP Rocky could be heard appearing to try to cool tensions: “Listen, listen. We don’t wanna fight you all. We’re not trying to go to jail.”

Footage of the altercation posted by TMZ and clips shared by A$AP Rocky himself, which have been at the heart of the investigation, were also played in court. The prosecutor suggested that one of the videos shared by A$AP Rocky on Instagram had been edited to omit the moment when his security guard grabbed the victim by the neck and lifted him off the ground.

He also shared text messages exchanged between different members of A$AP Rocky’s team, who spoke about “cleaning up” and “deleting” the videos.

But Jovicic argued the videos painted a different picture — one of “aggressive” and “threatening” behavior by the victim, who he claimed attacked A$AP Rocky’s bodyguard and refused to stop following his crew. “It is in this context that Mayers fears that there will be another attack on the bodyguard” and decides to throw the victim to the ground, Jovicic said. Asked by the judge whether A$AP Rocky had stepped on the victim’s arm on purpose, Jovovic replied: “It was intentional.”

Dave Rispers Sr., father of David Rispers, one of the accused, on the first day of the trial. As the prosecutor detailed the case against A$AP Rocky, the rapper’s fans were gathered in a nearby room to watch the proceedings unfold on a big screen. “I’m a big fan of A$AP Rocky,” Marie-Thiella Hakizmana, one of those gathered at court, told CNN. “I think he will be convicted — there is quite a lot of evidence against him. It would be right to convict him, but he shouldn’t get a very long sentence, since he was provoked.”

“I mean, there are laws in Sweden, just because you are a celebrity doesn’t mean you should get away,” she added. That fact is something that Swedish authorities tried to impress upon Trump after he took an interest in A$AP Rocky’s case, campaigning for the rapper’s release.

The US President previously said on Twitter that he had spoken with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and “offered to personally vouch for (A$AP Rocky’s) bail, or an alternative.”

But Swedish law doesn’t have a bail system and after Swedish authorities refused to release the musician, Trump tweeted: “Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM. We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!”

In response, Löfven’s spokesperson Mikael Lindström said in a statement to CNN that “all people in Sweden are equal before the law.” “The Government is not allowed, and will not attempt, to influence the legal proceedings, which are now ongoing,” Lindström said. Several high-profile celebrities including Kim Kardashian West, musical artists Post Malone and Shawn Mendes, and actress Jada Pinkett Smith have also thrown their support behind the rapper, petitioning for his release using the hashtag “JusticeForRocky.” The trial, at the Stockholm District Court, is scheduled to continue on Thursday and Friday. Under Swedish law, A$AP Rocky could face a maximum penalty of two years in prison. However, according to Swedish media, the prosecutors have indicated they do not expect to ask for the maximum penalty.

  • Dubai ruler’s wife seeks marriage protection order

The estranged wife of the ruler of Dubai – one of the most high-profile leaders in the Middle East – has asked for a forced marriage protection order in a UK court.

Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum’s wife, Princess Haya Bint al-Hussein, is the third female member of his court to apparently try to run away.

This month she was reported to be in hiding in London and is said to be in fear for her life.

The case began in London on Tuesday.

What happened in the High Court? Princess Haya asked for wardship of her children – with whom she left the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – as well as a forced marriage protection order and a non-molestation order.

The details of the orders sought by the princess are not known.

Sheikh Mohammed meanwhile applied for the return of his children to Dubai, and also applied for the court to impose reporting restrictions on details about the orders – a request the judge rejected.

Sir Andrew McFarlane ruled there was “a public interest in the public understanding, in very broad terms, proceedings that are before the court”.

Who is Princess Haya? The princess, who was born in Jordan and educated at private schools in Britain, is an Olympic equestrian and the half-sister of the current Jordanian ruler, King Abdullah II.

She married Sheikh Mohammed in 2004, becoming his sixth and “junior” wife. The 70-year-old sheikh, who is the billionaire owner of Godolphin horse racing stables, reportedly has 23 children by different wives.

Princess Haya, 45, initially fled to Germany to try to seek asylum there, but it emerged this month that she was living in central London – specifically, in an £85m ($107m) town house in Kensington Palace Gardens.

It’s believed that Princess Haya will want to stay in the UK. However, if her husband demands her return to Dubai, this could cause a diplomatic headache for Britain – which has close ties to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

After she fled, Sheikh Mohammed wrote an angry poem accusing an unnamed woman of betrayal and treachery, and posted it on his Instagram page.

Why is Princess Haya said to have run away?

Sources close to the princess said earlier this month she had recently discovered disturbing facts about the mysterious return to Dubai last year of Sheikha Latifa, one of Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters.

Sheikha Latifa had escaped the UAE by sea with the help of a Frenchman, but was intercepted by armed men off the coast of India. She was then returned to Dubai.

At the time, Princess Haya defended Dubai’s reputation over the incident, claiming that Sheikha Latifa had been “vulnerable to exploitation” and was “now safe in Dubai”. Human rights advocates said she was abducted against her will.

Later, however, sources alleged that Princess Haya had become aware of new information related to the case, and as a result came under increasing pressure from her husband’s extended family.

In July 2000, another of Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters – Sheikha Shamsa Al Maktoum, who was 19 at the time – briefly escaped from the family’s Surrey home.

Her method of escaping – by driving their Land Rover to the edge of the estate, abandoning the car and slipping through a fence on foot – made headlines at the time. She was reportedly found in Cambridge a year later and returned to Dubai.

  • Black lawmakers boycott Trump speech commemorating democracy

Democrats from Virginia’s Black Legislative Caucus have protested against a visit by President Donald Trump because of what they termed his “racist and xenophobic” rhetoric.

They and other Democrats boycotted the visit.

Mr Trump travelled to historic Jamestown to commemorate the 400th anniversary of representative democracy in the Western Hemisphere.

He is accused of stoking racial tension by attacking minority Congress members.

“I am the least racist person there is anywhere in the world,” Mr Trump said on Tuesday as he departed the White House for Jamestown.

What is the event celebrating? The visit marks the day in 1619 when Virginia’s first House of Burgesses met in Jamestown – the first English permanent colony in North America.

The group of white, male property owners became the inspiration for American democracy, and state legislatures and congresses across the continent.

“Self-government in Virginia did not just give us a state we love – in a very true sense, it gave us the country we love, the United States of America,” Mr Trump said in his address to Virginia lawmakers and state officials in Jamestown.

He noted that 2019 marks 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia. Next month, the city plans to commemorate this anniversary.

“In the face of grave oppression and grave injustice, African Americans have built, strengthened, inspired, uplifted, protected, defended and sustained our nation from its very earliest days,” Mr Trump said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in Washington, is leading a delegation of lawmakers to the West African nation of Ghana where they will visit castles where enslaved people were kept before being shipped in bondage to the New World.

On Wednesday she is due to address Ghanaian lawmakers.

What have Virginia lawmakers said? The last-minute announcement by the White House that Mr Trump would visit the city led to boycotts by the state’s Democratic lawmakers and Black Legislative Caucus.

“We will not be attending any part of the commemorative session where Donald Trump is in attendance,” the Virginia House Democrats said on Twitter. “The current president does not represent the values that we would celebrate at the 400th anniversary of the oldest democratic body in the Western world.”

The state’s black caucus said Mr Trump’s participation was “antithetical to the principles” that the group stood for.

Members intend to hold a rival event in Richmond on Tuesday.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney resigned from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s steering committee for the commemoration – which issued the invitation to Mr Trump – saying that the Republican president “denigrates our democracy” and should not be welcomed.

Why has Trump been called racist?

Mr Trump has long been accused of stoking racial tensions, going back decades before he became a political figure.

In the past month, Mr Trump has accused four Democratic congresswoman of hating America and said they should “go back” to “the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came”.

In the past week he has attacked Maryland congressman Elijah Cummings – who is black – saying that the Baltimore district that he represents is a “rodent-infested mess”.

On Tuesday, Mr Trump called his accusers “racist” and said his strategy of attacking minority lawmakers was helping him politically.

“I think I’m helping myself,” Mr Trump said. “These people are living in hell in Baltimore.”

‘A speech more careful than his tweets’

It says much about modern America that at a celebration of this country’s democratic roots, there was a protest against its democratically elected president.

However, the summer of 1619 is remembered not only for that important first meeting of an assembly, it also marked the beginning of brutal years when Africans were brought to this land.

Donald Trump’s recent criticisms of the city of Baltimore have angered, but the comments that some congresswomen of colour should go back to where they came from were beyond what many black Democrats were prepared to accept. They felt they had to boycott the event.

In his speech, Mr Trump was more careful with his words than in his tweets. And he made specific reference to the past wrongs committed against African Americans.

That won’t stop the many accusations against the president who has repeatedly tried to defend himself against suggestions he is racist.

People who were at Jamestown to learn about their country’s history were critical of both Mr Trump and the Democrats.

Many felt it was wrong to try to exclude the head of state from such a symbolic ceremony, even as they questioned his recent online attacks.

What’s clear is that by design or angry accident, Mr Trump’s tweets have helped ensure that race will be a key and extremely sensitive issue throughout the campaign for next year’s presidential election.

  • North Korea ‘fires two ballistic missiles’

North Korea has fired two ballistic missiles off its east coast, South Korea’s military is quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.

The launch was made from the Hodo peninsula on Wednesday morning local time, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told the agency.

The missiles flew 250km (155 miles) and reached a height of 30km before landing in the Sea of Japan, JCS added.

North Korea has so far made no comments on the issue.

Japan’s Ministry of Defence said that no ballistic missiles had reached its territory.

JCS said Wednesday’s missiles were a “different type from previous models”.

North Korea fired two short range missiles last week, according to the JCS, reportedly travelling about 430km, reaching an altitude of 50km, before falling into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

That reported launch was the first since US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had an impromptu meeting in June at the demilitarised zone that divides the two Koreas, where they agreed to restart denuclearisation talks.

They come as Pyongyang voices anger over planned military exercises between South Korea and the US, an annual event which the allies have refused to cancel.

The North has warned the exercises could affect the resumption of denuclearisation talks, which US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had said would likely start in July.

There have been no further public meetings between US and North Korean officials.

Last year, Mr Kim said North Korea would stop nuclear testing and would no longer launch intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Nuclear activity appears to be continuing, however, and satellite images of North Korea’s main nuclear site last month showed movement, suggesting the country could be reprocessing radioactive material into bomb fuel.

Pyongyang also continues to demonstrate its abilities to develop new weapons despite strict economic sanctions.

  • Ebola crisis: Second case confirmed in DR Congo border city of Goma

A second case of Ebola has been detected on Democratic Republic of Congo’s border with Rwanda, raising fears the deadly illness could spread.

The case was confirmed in the city of Goma, home to two million people, authorities said.

More than 1,600 people have died of Ebola in DR Congo since the outbreak began in August 2018.

The World Health Organization last week declared the crisis a global health emergency.

It is the highest level of alarm the WHO can sound and has only been used four times previously – including the Ebola epidemic that devastated parts of West Africa from 2014 to 2016, and killed more than 11,000 people.

What is the situation in Goma?

Ebola is affecting two provinces of Congo – North Kivu and Ituri. Goma is the capital of North Kivu and lies just across the border from the Rwandan city of Gisenyi.

A priest in Goma died from Ebola earlier this month. The WHO called it a “game-changer”, but until now there had not been any further confirmed cases.

On Tuesday, Dr Aruna Abedi – who is co-ordinating the response to the illness in North Kivu – told AFP news agency he had been informed of a second case.

“All measures have been put in place so that the case is taken care of in Goma,” an official statement said.

The area is densely populated and there are fears this could spread the illness into Rwanda.

Although the country as yet has not had any confirmed cases, it has set up an Ebola treatment centre and is preparing 23 isolation centres in case of any infections.

“Rwanda has made a significant investment in Ebola preparedness,” WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week.

“But as long as the outbreak continues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is a very real risk of spread to neighbouring countries.”

How bad is the situation in DR Congo? More than 2,500 people have been infected and two-thirds of them have died.

It took 224 days for the number of cases to reach 1,000, but just a further 71 days to reach 2,000.

About 12 new cases are being reported every day.

    Isn’t there a vaccine? Yes.

It is 99% effective and more than 161,000 people have been given it.

However, everybody is not vaccinated – only those who come into direct contact with an Ebola patient, and people who come into contact with them.

The vaccine was developed during the epidemic in West Africa and has been available throughout the latest outbreak.

Why hasn’t the outbreak been brought under control? Tackling the disease has been complicated by conflict in the region.

Since January, there have been 198 attacks against healthcare workers or Ebola treatment facilities leading to seven deaths and 58 injuries.

Another major problem has been distrust of healthcare workers leading to about a third of deaths being in the community rather than at a specialist Ebola treatment centre.

It means those people are not seeking treatment and risk spreading the disease to neighbours and relatives.

Is the world doing enough to help? The WHO has been clear for months that it has insufficient money to tackle the problem.

It had estimated that it needed $98m to tackle the outbreak between February and July. Yet it faced a shortfall of $54m.

  • Ashgold will make impact in Africa – CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of Ashantigold Sporting Club, Frederick Acheampong, says his outfit is determined to make a huge impact in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup to enable Ghana regain its four slots in African club competitions.

“We just want to make an impact in Africa; we want to reach a point where the whole of Africa would hear of us. We also want to reach as far as possible to help Ghana regain its initial two Champions League slots and two Confederation Cup slots,” he told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

The Obuasi-based club has signed 11 new players to augment its squad and have also appointed Ricardo da Rocha from Brazil as the head coach for the 2019/2020 Confederation Cup campaign.

Mr Acheampong said the Miners were preparing feverishly for the August 11 clash against Akonangui FC from Equatorial Guinea.

“We have played an international friendly and we would also play more matches to keep our team in good shape for the Confederation Cup. We know that to play very well in Africa, you have to play formidable teams.”

He also explained that Coach Da Rocha was appointed based on his experience and was optimistic that he and the Brazilian striker, Marco Silva, could help the team realise their continental aspirations.

“We appointed the coach because of his quality and while he was coming he recommended a striker, Marco Silva, and we accepted to sign him. His performance shows that he would be an asset to the team,” he noted.

In the 2015/2016 season when the Miners last participated in the African club competition, they exited in the preliminary stage via a 2-3 defeat on aggregate to MO Bejaia of Algeria.

  • Swansea City keen to offload Ghana captain Andre Ayew

English Championship side Swansea City are eager to offload Andre Ayew after Turkish giants Fenerbahce opted not to exercise their first option to buy the Ghana captain.

The Swans are keen to sell the son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele in a bid to reduce their massive wage bill.

Swansea chairman Trevor Birch has previously stated that the wages earned by the likes of the Ayew brothers and Borja Baston were potentially “crippling” the club.

The Wales-based side have already shifted Andre’s brother Jordan off the wage bill this summer, with the Ghanaian joining Premier League side Crystal Palace.

It came after the likes of Leroy Fer, Martin Olsson, Wilfried Bony and Luciano Narsingh were all released in the same month that Swansea sold Daniel James to Manchester United.

The club are still hoping they can find suitors for Andre Ayew who has not yet joined the club on their pre-season training.

Andre Ayew has another week off after being granted additional time away from the club following his efforts at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt earlier this summer.

The Ghana striker still has two years left to run on his existing deal with the club.

The Ayew brothers were not given shirt numbers when the club officially announced their squad list for the upcoming season earlier this month.

The Swans purchased Ayew for £18million during the January of their final season in the Premier League, and now look highly unlikely to recoup that fee in the summer, despite him having another two years left on his current deal at SA1.

City’s hopes of offloading Andre Ayew this summer look to have been deal a set back, with Turkish giants Fenerbahce reportedly turning down the opportunity to seal a permanent deal.

Ayew has scored five goals in 36 appearances for Fenerbahce.

  • Felix Annan to be appointed new Asante Kotoko captain

Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko are set to confirm Felix Annan as the club’s new captain following the departure of Amos Frimpong ahead of next season.

Annan, 24 has been serving as the club’s deputy skipper for the past three seasons and has been a key cog for the club since joining them from WAFA.

Footballghana.com understands that the Black Stars shot-stopper will be appointed for the vacant role after Amos Frimpong left to join Guinean club AS Kaloum Stars.

He has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Ghana Premier League following his scintillating performance for the past seasons.

He joined the Porcupine Warriors from Feyenoord Academy (now West African Football Academy) in 2014.

He was a member of the Black Stars squad that represented Ghana at the just ended 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt where they eliminated the round of 16 by Tunisia on penalties.

  • President Akufo Addo holds crunch meeting with Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah

Ghana President Nana Akufo Addo is currently holding sit-down talks with under-fire Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah following the country’s disastrous showing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm.

Appiah arrived at the Flagstaff Staff House, seat of government, alone on Tuesday afternoon and has been holding a closed-door meeting with the Ghanaian leader.

Details remain sketchy but GHANAsoccernet.com sources say the discussion will centre on the coach’s future long-term with the national team future following the country’s calamitous campaign in Egypt.

With four months left on his contract with the Black Stars, Appiah has been reluctant to leave the post insisting he wants to stay until the end of the deal in December.

That is because he will get a massive payoff if he is sacked before his contract expires.

However in the face of intense public condemnation the Sports Ministry and the toothless Ghana FA have been unable to take a firm decision with the 2021 AFCON qualifiers set to start in two months time.

Sports ministry officials and politically-appointed FA are keen on sacking Appiah on amicable terms but are afraid of the political reaction from above as Appiah has a close relationship with the President Akufo Addo.

The former international defender’s future is in the balance with many in the ruling party NPP who had backed him in the past, calling for his sacking.

Despite retaining some support of some key members of the party, the intense negative commentary over the role of the coach in the country’s outing in Egypt looks to have forced the country’s President to call him.

If President Akufo Addo agrees with the Ministry and the GFA that the coach should be allowed to go, Appiah could be told to resign honourably or face the disgrace of being sacked humiliatingly.

If he retain the President’s trust to continue in the job, he would be given some stern warnings over some of the issues that resulted in the Black Stars worst outing at the AFCON since 2006.

  • VADAG sings for Akufo-Addo, welcomes withdrawal of luxury vehicle tax

The Vehicle and Asset Dealers Association of Ghana (VADAG) seems to be on cloud nine following the withdrawal of the Luxury vehicle tax.

VADAG are among some groups who went on a ‘vehicle’ demonstration to protest against the luxury vehicle tax which was targetted at vehicles with engine capacities of 3.0 litres and above.

The luxury vehicle tax was introduced in July last year to levy vehicles with big engine capacities in line with the sustainable development goals to control emissions and reduce the impact on climate change.

Vehicles with engine capacities of 3.0 3.5 litres were to pay an annual tax of GH¢1,000.00; those with engine capacities of 3.6 4.0 litres will pay GH¢1,500.00 annually and 4.1 litres and above are to pay an annual tax of GH¢2000.00.

On Monday during the presentation of the 2019 Mid-Year Review Budget, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta announced that the controversial levy has been withdrawn.

Eric Kweku Boateng, leader of VADAG, in reaction hailed President Akufo-Addo for listening to their cry and went further to compose a song for him.

He also commended former President John Mahama for championing their course.

  • NAM1 bail condition not favourable Menzgold

Managers of embattled gold dealership firm Menzgold have described as “unfavourable” the bail condition set by the court for the release of their CEO, Nana Appiah Mensah popularly known as NAM1.

NAM1 was admitted to a GHS1-billion bail bond by an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye, on Friday, 26 July 2019.

He is to provide five sureties, three of which must be justified and also present himself to the police every Wednesday.

NAM1, who, together with four others, was facing eight counts of defrauding by false pretence, now faces 13 counts after the prosecution amended the charge sheet and added five more counts.

Reacting to the bail condition Menzgold in a statement said, “as far as we are concerned, the bail conditions are not FAVOURABLE at all but we are determined to meet it. We think that figure is totally outrageous, especially when the figure involved in terms of debt we owe is far less than GHS1.68bn.”

    Below is the full statement:

    Update on the Bail Condition
    ———————————————

The judge accepted the bail application submitted by lead counsel Kwame Akuffo and granted bail in monetary terms of GHC 1b ( $185m), 5 sureties with three to be JUSTIFIED.

The reason for that lofty monetary sum was because according to the Prosecutor, the first and second accused has defrauded 16,000 to the amount of GHc1.68bn.

Although our lead counsel debunked that outrageous figures…the judge on the face of the prosecution case admitted or accepted that figure. Which means that in granting the bail, that amount (GHc1.68bn) forms the bases for the bail condition, hence the Ghc1bn.

GHS 1bn, Five sureties and 3 to be justified

As far as we are concerned, the bail conditions are not FAVOURABLE at all but we are determined to meet it. We think that figure is totally outrageous, especially when the figure involved in terms of debt we owe is far less than GHC1.68bn.

What it means is that five people must sign the bail conditions and three out of the five must show proof of physical infrastructure or properties amounting to or close to GHc1bn.

If the three sureties are able to provide all landed documents or properties amounting or close to that figure, the other two will just sign to fulfil the bail conditions.

Why Chief is still in Custody

As at Friday when the bail was given, the Team have been able to get all five sureties. The three to be justified have also submitted various documents to prove ownership. However, submitting the documents is NOT the end of the process. They must go to the Lands Commission, and a SEARCH needs to be carried to AUTHENTICATE the ownership as stipulated on the documents provided. Letters of covers must be attached from the Lands Commission on all the search. When that is done and presented to CID, they will also have it run their own search to confirm the ownership and then do VALIDATION and VALUATION.

Remember all three landed properties must amount to or be close to Ghc1bn. So, the valuer needs to do the valuation to check if all three justified sureties amount to the Ghc1bn.

As we speak, all three landed properties have been submitted by the Team. The search, validation and valuation are in PROCESS.

    What Next:

The Team is currently waiting for the search, valuation and validation to be completed by both the Lands Commission Officers and the CID. And when that is done, the Team together with the Police CID will go to the Court Registrar to summit the ORIGINAL copies and that will be the end of the PROCESS.

  • Local steel manufacturers lament high power tariff

The Steel Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SMAG) says the cost of power is dealing a heavy blow to the growth and development of the industry.

Members of the association on Tuesday visited Parliament to meet legislators on the committee on Energy and Trade and industry over the matter.

They had earlier petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Prof Mike Ocquaye, over the recent increase in electricity tariff.

The Executive Secretary and Consultant of the association, Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, told the press after the meeting that SMAG made a presentation to the legislators about the strategic importance of the steel industry to the economy among other.

He said the meeting with Members of Parliament also discussed other challenges causing unrest in the industry.

Dr Dawson-Ahmoah highlighted two key challenges namely: the increase in electricity tariff of over 92% and the ever-increasing importation of steel into the country.

“We are saddened by the fact that the number of steel manufacturing companies in Ghana were 8 but 2 of them have recently collapsed because of these unfavourable business conditions. It is worthy to note that the local steel industry employs about 3,000 direct workers and 10,000 indirect workers. The companies also contribute significantly towards government revenue in the form of taxes,” he said.

Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah who doubles as the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers stressed that the steel industry also uses local content by providing jobs for over 10,000 scrap dealers and it is expected to consume about 1.2 million tonnes of scrap for production annually.

The installed capacity of the local steel industry is about 1,200,000 metric tonnes per annum against an annual average demand of about 350,000 Metric tonnes per annum which results in a surplus of 850,000 metric tonnes per annum. How can we kill such an industry by encouraging the importation of finished steel products when it has such a huge surplus capacity” he questioned.

Dr Dawson-Ahmoah on behalf of the Association called on Government to immediately suspend the increased electricity tariff until a proper in-depth inquiry is made to ascertain the proper assessment. “Our checks have it that some of our neighbouring countries pay as low as 0.9 Cent per Kw/h of electricity so until the enquiry is concluded we are requested that the old tariff of Gh. 0.41 pesewas must be maintained as an interim tariff”.

On the issue of the illegal importation of steel products into the country, the Association is appealing to Government for a legislative instrument (LI) which will introduce quotas that will regulate the importation and also to introduce certain levies as safeguard measures on importation to protect the local steel industry.

“Countries such as China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Congo have instituted such measures and Ghana can take a cue to protect our dear local steel industry from collapse”.

  • Why government suspended PDS

Government of Ghana in the late hours of Tuesday, July 30 announced the abrogation of the contract with Power Distribution Services barely six months after the company took over from the Electricity Company of Ghana.

In a statement signed by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, it disclosed that “the decision follows the detection of fundamental and material breaches of PDS obligation in the provision of Payment Securities (Demand Guarantees) for the transaction which have been discovered upon further diligence. The Demand Guarantees were key prerequisites for the lease of assets on 1st March 2019 to secure the assets that were transferred to the concessionaire.

It further indicated that steps were underway to unveil the details that went into it as government is conducting a full enquiry into the matter.

Checks by Ghanweb have also revealed that following the transfer of ECG’s assets and operations to PDS on the 1st of March, 2019, ECG, acting as the beneficiary of the Demand Guarantees, has subjected the Guarantees submitted by PDS to further due diligence tests.

ECG received a letter from Al Koot, dated 16 July 2019 that claims, among other things, that the officer who executed the Guarantees from Al Koot was not authorized and that the Guarantees are null and void. The letter also stated that the officer had committed fraud.

Insider information further revealed that the alarming development resulted in meetings with officials of Ministry of Finance and ECG as well as with President Akufo-Addo.

After the meetings Government decided to crosscheck the information contained in the Disclaimer Letter by sending a Delegation of Stakeholders to Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday, 31st July 2019 to meet with officials from Al Koot.

Prior to the trip by the Government Delegation and their report, the Government, therefore, decided, as a precautionary measure, to set aside the Concession Agreement with effect from Tuesday, 30th July 2019.

  • Change course or plunge economy into bigger challenges Minority to Nana Addo

The Minority side in Parliament has urged the government to change its mode of running the economy, which has seen an increase in key taxes like the Energy Sector Levies (ESLA).

The comments follow the Mid-year Budget review where three taxes that form part of the ESLA were increased in addition to the Communication Service Tax.

At a press conference addressed by the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority warned that more hardship awaited the country if the government did not amend its agenda.

“The mid-year budget presented by the Finance Minister only offers gloom and portend very difficult times for all Ghanaians. There is, therefore, the need for the Akufo-Addo government to change course or they will plunge the economy into much bigger challenges,” he said.

The Minority also warned that Ghana was faced with another International Monetary Fund programme because of the perceived economic mismanagement by the Akufo-Addo administration.

Mr. Forson said Ghana was not far away from needing a bailout given the state of affairs.

“Given the fiscal challenges confronting the country and the high level of public debt, it would not come as a surprise if Ghana seeks a bailout from the IMF less than two years after exiting a similar programme that the current administration proudly touted as an achievement.”

Mr Forson, who is also MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, said the government had ignored the advice to resist the urge to impose new taxes.

“These calls appear to have fallen on deaf ears…Under the ESLA increments, an average increase of 25% was imposed on the Power Generation and Infrastructure Support Levy, Road Fund Levy and the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy.”

“If these increases create frustration and Ghanaians wish to vent through phone calls or on social media, the Mid-year budget has made that expensive as well following the imposition of a 50% increase in the Communication Service Tax from 6% to 9%,” the MP said.

  • Close Season starts August 1: Licence required to hunt Akranti?

The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has announced that the annual ban on hunting, capturing and destroying of wild animals will commence from August 1, 2019, and end on December 1, 2019.

The five-month ban otherwise known as “Close Season” is in conformity with the Wildlife Conservation Regulation 1971, L.I. 685.

Any person who contravenes the regulation would be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine.

A public notice signed by the Executive Director of the Wildlife Division mentioned that the only wild animal that can be hunted during the period is the grass cutter (Akranti?) and only under a license issued by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission.

“During this period, it shall be illegal for anybody to hunt, capture or destroy any wild animal except the grass cutter (Akrantie), which can be done only under licence issued by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission,” the notice said.

Grasscutter meat is a delicacy in Ghana because of its high protein contents and low cholesterol level as compared to beef and goat meat.

Consumer acceptance trails conducted by Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) found that grasscutter meat was found to be 49.7%, compared to 28.9% and 21.5% for beef and goat respectively.

  • Okyenhene rejects community mining initiative as he endorses planting for food and jobs

The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin has outrightly rejected government’s community mining initiative instituted by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining (IMCM) as alternative to the illegal mining.

While he casts doubt over adherence to best practices and responsible mining when the initiative is finally rolled out, the Akyem Abuakwa overlord suggested government rather commit resources into the planting for food and jobs initiative than mining.

The Okyenhene made the remark when the Lands and Natural resources minister, Kwaku Asoma Kyeremeh paid a courtesy call on him at Kyebi in the eastern region.

The visit of the Land and natural resources minister forms part of a five-day field visit to mining communities in the region.

The Akufo Addo led government made a strong case against illegal mining looking at its devastating effects on lands, water bodies and forest in general and therefore placed a ban on the practice to enable the government to find better and lasting solution to its effect.

The community concept, born few months ago, is, therefore, a Replacement and a relief to the many youth who hitherto became redundant due to the ban on illegal small scale mining.

The Okyenhene welcoming the minister to his palace said the planting for food and jobs initiative was more sustainable and has the potential of raking in more money for the country than mining which he says has contributed little to the economy.

” My suggestion is not an attack on your policy, it is a suggestion I’m making and i feel passionately about this. We cut trees recklessly when we know that the leaves hold carbon dioxide, we are cutting without knowing the life-saving features they may hold and for 62 years we don’t know where we are going”, He lamented.

Mr. Asoma Kyeremeh on his part stated that he is in the region to explain the objective of the community mining initiative.

According to him, the initiative will reduce the price one has to pay for engaging in illegal mining.

The minister and his entourage inspected some mining sites in Akyem- Gyampomanin, and Dome in the Fanteakwa South District.

The minister during his visit insisted that two mining firms, life long mining company limited and Dome mines reclaim degraded lands and mine hundred meters away from the birim river.

The Asunafo South District police command in the Ahafo Region has arrested a 29-years-old self-styled man of God for allegedly raping three women.

The incident happened at Akrodie in the Asunafo North Municipal.

The pastor, Daniel Abisah aka OGYABOFO of Adom Power Ministry reportedly arrived at Akrodie on 22nd July 2019 for a crusade which attracted several worshipers including his three victims aged 19 and 20.

The pastor on separate occasions during the open air crusade told each of his victims a bizarre life story that put fear into them to follow him to either his house or the guest house where he lodged.

To his first victim aged 19, the pastor told her the grandmother put on her waist spiritual beads which is hindering her progress in life and hard to find a husband.

Daniel Abisah ordered her to come to him wearing a straight dress so that whatever that was troubling her would be exorcised. He ended up, allegedly, having sexual intercourse with her and threatened that if she tells anybody he will write her name on a candle and burn it, which will mean her death.

The second victim who needed a child was told by the pastor that the one who bathed her as a baby inserted some bad omen into her womb making it difficult for her to bear a child.

The third victim was also informed that her uncle slept with her aunty, and had to undergo purification to safeguard her future.

The Asunafo South District Police Commander, ASP Lawrence Adombire who confirmed the arrest to 3News said the suspect had succeeded in luring more women into these mess but some feel embarrassed to file a report.

  • Government has destroyed financial gains achieved under NDC Minority

The Akufo-Addo-led government has squandered the gains made in the financial sector by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, the Minority in Parliament has said.

The opposition lawmakers said the government has introduced unrealistic programmes and policies which are endangering the financial sector of the economy.

At a press conference on Tuesday, 30 July 2019 to react to the 2019 mid-year budget review presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on Monday, 29 July 2019, Mr Casiel Ato Forson, Member of Parliament for Ejumako Enyan Essiam said foreign investors are scared to invest in the Ghanaian economy due to the unstainable policies the government has introduced.

He added that the public debt is also increasing due to the bad governance of the New Patriotic Party administration.

“The Fiscal outlook remains challenging with the fiscal deficit likely to exceed the Fiscal Responsibility Threshold of 5 per cent of GDP. We should expect a fiscal deficit level of 5±2 per cent of GDP.

“Let me put it on record once again that we did indicate that one of the main drivers of depreciation of the cedi, when we issued a statement earlier, was fiscal risk as a result of government policy inconsistencies which is sending a whole lot of negative signals to the investor community,” the former Deputy Finance Minister said.

He added: “Investors form rationale expectations based on past experiences. They are aware that the government recently announced unsustainable policies which exert intense pressures on its fiscal position and lead to severe liquidity constraints. These eventually pose challenges for government in honouring its obligations to investors.

“It is unfortunate that less than a year after Ghana exited the IMF programme, our public finances have been severely derailed, and we are at the risk of losing our credibility. Investors are expressing mixed feelings and reactions. It is a mark of policy inconsistency for the government to announce a contractionary fiscal stance and yet assumed the path of expansionary fiscal policy.”

  • 2019 WASSCE: WAEC withholds results of 48,000 candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the entire results of some 48,555 candidates who sat for the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) examinations pending investigations into various cases of examination malpractices.

The 48,555 represents 14.12% of the entire 346,094 candidates entered for the examinations.

This was disclosed in a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe.

According to WAEC, the results were withheld as a result of various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination.

    The malpractices include;

    bringing foreign material such as prepared notes, printed material and mobile phones to the examination hall;

    collusion among candidates ;

planned cheating which occurred with the connivance of some supervisors and school authorities.

WAEC added that the withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.

    Tackling examination malpractice

In June, WAEC instituted some measures including banning the use of cellular devices at examination centres to curb malpractices.

Consequently, invigilators, supervisors and candidates were directed not to use mobile phones and other such gadgets during examinations.

According to WAEC, the ban had become necessary after the results of a research which established that adults were primary culprits in examination malpractice at all levels of education in the country.

In addition, it said, no supervisor or invigilator would be allowed, under any circumstance, to supervise or invigilate candidates from schools to which the supervisor or invigilator was affiliated.

  • Kwesi Appiahs fate in GFAs hands – Oti Akenten

The Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Coach Francis Oti Akenten, has called on Ghanaians to exercise patience and allow the GFA to decide on the fate of Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah.

The Stars coach led the team to the round of 16 — their worst Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign since the 2006 tournament where they failed to go past the group stage, and that has provoked reactions for his immediate sack or resignation.

However, Coach Akenten believes that the call was too sentimental, explaining that Appiah’s fate should be decided without sentiments. According to him, any hasty decision now might lead to mistakes.

“We should not be in a haste to take decisions. It is important that we take our time so we don’t make mistakes,” he said in an interview with the Daily Graphic last Saturday.

He emphasised the need for a detailed and objective analysis of the coach’s performance before a decision could be taken.

“There should be an evaluation of our performance and a proper deductive analysis of everything that happened and then we can decide whether he should be maintained or changed,” he said.

Onetime assistant coach of the Black Stars between 1996 and 1997, the FA?director stated that maintaining Coach Appiah would be good for continuity.

“As someone who believes in team-building and development, I won’t be quick to say he should go. Maintaining him will be good for team-building and continuity. But as I said, it all depends on the evaluation,” he added.

Coach Oti Akenten, who was absent in Egypt despite being the technical director of the GFA, disclosed that he communicated with Coach Appiah throughout the tournament.

“It would have been good for me to be with the team, but my absence was also not bad. My position goes beyond the Black Stars. There was work to be done on other national teams, especially the Under-20 as they prepare for the African Games.

Coach Appiah’s current contract expires in December and so will remain in charge of Ghana’s first 2021 AFCON qualifier against South Africa in November.

Ghana have been drawn against South Africa, Sudan and either Mauritius or Sao Tome in Group C of the Cameroun 2021 AFCON qualifiers.

  • Cannabis ‘to be legalised in the UK’ within five to ten years, say MPs

A group of cross-party MPs who’ve been on a fact-finding trip to Canada predict the UK will fully legalise cannabis use within five to ten years.

Canada became the first G7 country to allow recreational use of the drug in 2018.

Of the three politicians in the group one had a significant shift in his position.

Labour’s David Lammy now backs legalisation, against his party’s official stance.

Mr Lammy, alongside Conservative Jonathan Djanogly and Liberal Democrat Sir Norman Lamb were all filmed on their journey for a Radio 1 Newsbeat documentary called Legalising Weed: Canada’s Story.

Currently cannabis is designated as a Class B drug in the UK and anyone caught with it could face up to five years in prison.

However, there has been a shift in approach towards medicinal cannabis products, which can now be legally prescribed to some patients.

The decision to relax those rules followed an outcry over two boys with severe epilepsy being denied access to cannabis oil.

It’s argued that where cannabis has been legalised for medical use, authorised recreational use often follows.

“I want the market legalised, regulated and taken away from crime gangs,” said Tottenham MP David Lammy after returning from visiting Toronto.

“For young people not to be criminalised by use and properly educated.

“I want to see the strength of the stuff reduced, labelled and properly organised in this country.”

The Liberal Democrat Party already officially backs legalising cannabis in the UK.

MP for North Norfolk, Sir Norman Lamb led that policy decision.

Whilst in Canada he wanted to legally sample cannabis oil to try to help him sleep.

But he was very aware that such a product would be illegal in the UK.

He may be the only serving British MP to ever openly take a cannabis product on camera.

“Taking this oil is purely for sleeping for relaxation, I will take it before bed and before my flight home.”

It’s different to the cannabis oils available legitimately in the UK because it contained THC, the compound that gets users high.

“I was really anxious because I was chairing the technology and science select committee and I was travelling back over night, and I thought if I get back with no sleep it will be a challenge.”

He said he did not feel high but it did help him fall asleep.

    “I slept incredibly well.

“I took the drops and I slept very well on the plane home, I actually slept through breakfast.”

The trip was organised by a UK-based campaign group, Volte Face, which wants the UK to legalise the drug.

It’s part sponsored by a big North American cannabis company called MPX.

Newsbeat suggested that it was trying to use its money to influence British politicians.

“We’re moving it away from organised crime to a legitimate commercial industry,” Scott Boyes, MPX CEO, told us.

“We’ve had a lot of UK investors invest in our company and we’re moving into six countries.

“A lot of the money we have raised has come out of the UK, so I don’t consider it interfering with other people’s politics and a lot of the expenses have been born by themselves.”

Sir Norman Lamb and David Lammy decided to fund their own flights and accommodation.

But the MPs also realise Canada’s experience has not been without problems. In the documentary we hear from Piper Courtenay whose title is Cannabis Editor for a weekly newspaper.

She describes how technically illegal, but often described as “grey”, cannabis providers still thrive.

The limits on fully licensed products mean there’s still a market for things like edibles and other cannabis products.

Around half of the cannabis bought in Canada still comes from illegal sources.

“It’s certainly better than the legal product I have tried so far, because they genuinely care about growing good craft cannabis,” she tells us.

All three MPs on the trip believed that the UK would follow Canada’s lead and legalise cannabis for recreational use in the next decade.

But Conservative MP for Huntingdon, Jonathan Djanogly, was perhaps unsurprisingly given his party name, the most conservative with his predictions.

“I think we have got a lot to learn before the legalisation of recreational cannabis, which I think will happen at some point,” Jonathan Djanogly told us.

“I think we’re on a 10 to 15 year cycle which would mirror what has happened in Canada.”

The other MPs felt it would happen sooner and closer to five years.

However, the government told Newsbeat it “has no intention of changing the law” when it comes to legalisation.

A Home Office spokesman said: “The legalisation of these substances would not eliminate the crime committed by the illicit trade, nor would it address the harms associated with drug dependence and the misery they can cause to families and society.”

  • Dark web criminal bought ‘quadrillions of Zimbabwe bank notes’

A drug dealer who used dark web marketplaces to ply his trade apparently used part of the proceeds to buy vast quantities of Zimbabwean cash.

The FBI said Richard Castro, of Florida, had bought the equivalent of “approximately 100 quadrillion [1,000 trillion] Zimbabwe bank notes” in June 2018.

Use of the currency had ended years earlier, following hyperinflation.

The purchase is thought to have been part of a wider money laundering scheme

Castro also bought hundreds of thousands of US dollars worth of vehicles and “luxury automobile [wheel] rims”.

The accused initially made his fortune by illegally dealing opioids, including fentanyl and carfentanil – both of which are stronger than heroin.

These were initially sold via AlphaBay and Dream Market, markets on the Tor network accessed via a special web browser only.

However, after the authorities shut AlphaBay down and were rumoured to have compromised Dream Market’s platform, Castro told his clients he would accept purchases via encrypted email only and required them to pay the equivalent of a $104 (£85) fee in Bitcoin to be told the address.

An undercover police officer paid the fee and used the address to order several deliveries, which first helped identify one of Castro’s associates and then the dealer himself, who had gone by the nickname Chems_usa.

Castro initially claimed to be not guilty before changing his plea last week.

He has since agreed to surrender a sum worth the equivalent of about $4.16m, earned through the criminal venture.

He is due to be sentenced on 25 October and could face decades in jail.

  • Love Island: Amber and Greg crowned 2019 winners in live final

Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea have been crowned the winners of this year’s Love Island.

It’s a surprising end to the series – as Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague had been the bookies’ favourites to win for several weeks.

Amber is a beauty therapist and model from Newcastle, while Greg is a rugby player from Limerick, Ireland.

Presenter Caroline Flack announced them as the winners of the hugely successful ITV2 show on Monday evening.

Amber, 21, said she could “not believe it”, while 24-year-old Greg described their win as “crazy.”

Congratulating the winning couple, Fury added: “Amber has had a hard time in here, she deserves everything that’s coming to her.”

Greg did not join the show until earlier this month, but Amber has been in the villa since the series began at the start of June.

“It would be fair to say I’ve had quite a journey in the villa this summer. There have been so many highs, but I’ve still had some quite low lows,” Amber said during the final.

“[Greg] came in in the 11th hour; just when I thought there was nothing left for me in the villa, everything changed. He picked me up when I was at my most vulnerable, and helped me rediscover my smile.”

She added: “It’s been absolutely wild… a rollercoaster of emotion.”

  • Ghana ‘exports rosewood timber illegally to China’

About six million rosewood trees have been cut down in Ghana for illegal export to China since 2012, an environmental group says.

The rare species, which takes 100 years to grow, is mostly used to make imperial-style furniture in China.

The report blames corrupt officials in Ghana for forging documents to allow the wood to leave the country.

Ghana’s information ministry has not yet responded to the BBC’s request for comment.

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) said in a report that the illegal trade and felling of rosewood trees has continued despite a ban being in place since 2012 and which has since been tightened.

Ghana and other West African countries are the victims of China’s insatiable and unchecked demand for rosewood, the EIA said.

“Since 2012, over 540,000 tons of rosewood – the equivalent of 23,478 twenty-foot containers or approximately six million trees – were illegally harvested and imported into China from Ghana while bans on harvest and trade have been in place,” the group added.

Investigations found “a massive institutionalised timber trafficking scheme, enabled by high-level corruption and collusion”, it said.

The campaign group also said that logging was contributing to the desertification crisis in Ghana.

It called for the trade in rosewood to be suspended across the West African region and for China to comply with international agreements on endangered species.

Rosewood is supposed to be protected by Cites, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, but the EIA says this protection is not enough.

In May, Gabon fired its vice-president and minister of forestry after 300 containers of kevazingo, also known as African rosewood, went missing.

  • Katy Perry copied Dark Horse from Christian rapper Flame

Katy Perry copied her 2013 song Dark Horse from a Christian rap song, a US court has ruled.

Katy gave evidence in the week-long trial, denying she had ever heard the 2009 song Joyful Noise by Flame before recording her track.

She even offered to perform Dark Horse for the court room when her lawyers were unable to play the song for jurors because of a broken speaker system.

But despite the joke, the jury ruled against Katy on Monday.

During the trial, Katy’s team described the beat of both songs as “commonplace”, arguing that because of that, Flame (real name Marcus Tyrone Gray) could not claim copyright.

“They’re trying to own basic building blocks of music, the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” said Katy’s lawyer Christine Lepera during her closing arguments in court last week.

But lawyers representing Flame claimed that Katy and her team had “copied an important part” of his song, at the conclusion of legal proceedings that started in 2014.

“They’re trying to shove Mr Gray into some gospel music alleyway that no one ever visits,” said Gray’s lawyer Michael A. Kahn.

He also mentioned the fact that Katy started her career as a Christian artist.

Despite the trial focusing on the production of the song – it was produced by Dr Luke, Max Martin and Cirkut – the court found that the six songwriters of Dark Horse were also liable.

This includes Katy Perry, and rapper Juicy J, who contributed a verse to the song.

Today (Tuesday 30 July) the court will start work on deciding how much in damages Gray may be owed.

Dark Horse was released in 2013 on Katy’s fourth album Prism and is one of her biggest hits.

It has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide and the video for the song was the first ever by a female artist to reach a billion views on both YouTube and Vevo.

In total, the video has been watched more than 2.6 billion times since its release in 2014.

  • Sogne Yacouba wants contract with Kotoko terminated

Beleaguered Asante Kotoko forward Sogne Yacouba wants his contract with the club terminated, says his local agent Gyasi Jantuah.

According to Mr. Jantuah the Burkinabe forward is unhappy with the club and he is ready to force his way out of the Kumasi based outfit.

The Porcupine Warriors have rejected offers from clubs abroad for the striker, who has been the club’s talisman in recent times.

“It is true that Al Hilal presented an offer to Kotoko for Songne Yacouba but he is not ready and wants to terminate his contract with Kotoko,” Mr Jantuah told Otec FM.

“The issues between the player and the management are becoming too much so the decision is the player is ready to prove himself and terminate his contract with the team. We will know the way forward after terminating his contract with Kotoko.”

For sometime now, the lethal attacker has struggled with injuries and was the reason behind his failure to feature in the special competition.

Despite the back and forth with the club over moves away from the team, the striker is expected to make the squad for the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary stage game against Kano Pillars on August 10.

  • Romelu Lukaku: Has Manchester United striker been a failure at Old Trafford?

With Romelu Lukaku’s time at Manchester United likely to come to an end after just two seasons, how will his time at Old Trafford be remembered?

The Belgian striker has not played in pre-season and has been left out of United’s 26-man squad for a friendly against Kristiansund.

United have rejected a £54m bid from Inter Milan, but talks are ongoing – with Lukaku seemingly not in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans. Juventus are also reportedly interested.

No trophies, but a better goalscoring season than Eric Cantona ever managed. How has his much-heralded big move come to this after only two years?

Part of Lukaku’s problem has been the high expectations following his £75m move from Everton two years ago – the joint-fifth most expensive transfer ever at the time.

When Lukaku moved in 2017, he was only the fourth player to score 80 goals in the Premier League before turning 24 – after Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Wayne Rooney. His goals came for West Brom and Everton, having failed to score for Chelsea in a few cameos.

That was after scoring 33 Belgian top-flight goals for Anderlecht, including winning the Golden Boot at the age of 16 in 2009-10. The Belgian title he won that year remains his only major trophy.

“I think he’ll fit well. He’s got the temperament to handle the big situations,” former Everton midfielder Leon Osman told BBC Sport at the time.

“He’s a big character off the pitch. He does believe in himself. He has a big self-confidence. He got criticised at times at Everton for not tracking back, but Manchester United won’t have an issue with that.”

In goalscoring terms his time at United has not gone badly – although he is set to leave England without winning a single trophy.

Lukaku has scored 27 and 15 goals in his two seasons with United. Of the other strikers at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford’s highest total in a season is 13. Anthony Martial’s best campaign was 17 goals – but that was back in 2015-16, when he first joined the club.

In his debut season, Lukaku became one of only 11 United players to hit 25 goals or more in a campaign since 1992-93. Cantona, Andy Cole and current manager Solskjaer (25 each) are among the strikers who never matched Lukaku’s 27-goal tally in a United campaign.

However 26% of his United goals – 11 out of 42 – came in the first two months of his Old Trafford career.

Does his playing style count against him?
United’s style of play over the past few years has been difficult to fathom – with signings not appearing to fit any long-term strategy. But things might be changing.

When Lukaku joined United under Jose Mourinho, the manager’s tactics appeared to suit the big Belgian in that first 27-goal season.

But his nine goals following Mourinho’s sacking and Solskjaer’s appointment in December came in two three-game bursts, including a spell of playing on the wing.

He netted against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading around the new year. And then scored doubles in successive games against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Paris St-Germain in late February and early March.

Lukaku missed the last two games of the season and has not featured once in pre-season because of injuries – although some media reports suggest he has already recovered and is just being left out.

Solskjaer has a clear idea how he wants United to play this season. He plans to use three attacking midfielders behind a centre forward – and wants them all to have pace and the ability to interchange.

That approach is unlikely to suit Lukaku, whose playing style has previously led to suggestions he is lazy.

Is that unfair? He covered less distance – albeit not dramatically so – than two of his three fellow United forwards last season. But he covered more ground and made more sprints per game than Martial.

How does he compare to other Premier League centre forwards who tend to play as out-and-out strikers? He was behind Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud in terms of distance covered last season. But he attempted more sprints than Aguero and Kane.

For all his goals in England – he is in the top 20 Premier League scorers ever – there is every chance United will not miss him at all.

They have a better win percentage when Lukaku has not been in their starting line-up in the past two years – both under Mourinho and Solskjaer. They have won 62.5% of games when he has not started, compared to 55.8% with him in the XI.

If Lukaku does leave this summer, United are not expected to sign a replacement and they could go into the season with Martial, Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and 17-year-old Mason Greenwood.

Jesse Lingard could be another option.

Martial and Rashford have both played as the lone striker in pre-season – as well as in the wider role in the three behind the striker. Greenwood has played frequently and Solskjaer says he “has a chance to start against Chelsea” on the opening day.

Greenwood’s attitude in pre-season training has impressed observers. And the teenager has scored twice, against Leeds in Perth and Inter Milan in Singapore.

Seen as a more instinctive finisher than Rashford, Solskjaer says loaning Greenwood out “has never been on my mind… he is flying”.

Sanchez, who has had a rotten time at United, has not featured in pre-season training either because of playing for Chile in the Copa America.

His record of five goals in 45 games for the Red Devils does not point to a big season ahead – but there seems little prospect of him leaving Old Trafford, not least because of his hefty wages.

Lukaku has dropped from joint fifth to 14th on the list of most expensive transfers ever in the past two years.

And perhaps the most damning indictment of his time at United is that they could make a loss on him in an era when transfer fees have exploded.

  • Thomas Partey not ruling out Atlético Madrid exit

Atlético Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey does not rule out a summer departure from the club.

The 26-year-old has requested to be transferred amid reports he is not guaranteed a starting berth for the upcoming season.

Despite the departures of Griezmann, Godín and Rodrigo, the Ghanaian is not guaranteed a starting role under Diego Simeone next season.

Free-agent Hector Herrera has also signed for Wanda Metropolitano while the inclusion of Koke and Saul has made matters difficult for Partey.

For these reasons, the Ghanaian is desirous of leaving Atletico Madrid to a club where he can guarantee regular playing time.

Partey has an exit clause of 70 million euros, but the rojiblanco club can negotiate from 40 million.

Atletico Madrid are looking to sign a midfielder with a more physical presence and have set their eyes on either AC Milan man Franck Yannick Kessié or Tiémoué Bakayoko from Chelsea.

Partey has been linked with English giants Arsenal while PSG have been mentioned as a potential destination.

  • How African duo catapulted Toronto Raptors to historic NBA title

The Toronto Raptors became the first non-American NBA team to win the championship this year after beating the Golden State Warriors in the final.

They did so with the help of two African-born players in Pascal Siakam and Serge Ibaka. As the Raptors hoisted the trophy into the air, you could almost hear NBA fans from everywhere but Oakland breathing out a collective sigh of relief.

    NBA raptors

Over the past five years, the Warriors steamrolling their way to yet another NBA Championship has felt like an inevitable outcome. Thankfully this year, the Toronto Raptors flipped the script, which is good for the NBA not just in America, but internationally as well.

Pascal Siakam of Cameroon and Serge Ibaka of the DRC were both instrumental players in Toronto’s march to the Championship.

Their performances on the NBA’s biggest stage could do wonders in regards to growing the game internationally.

Both players are shining examples of the fact that it is possible to make the jump from Africa to the NBA.

While these players took different paths to get to the worlds premier basketball league, they showed others with the same dream that it is possible to not only get to the NBA but to succeed at the games highest level.

Ibaka spent time playing professionally in Spain before finally getting a chance to crack the Oklahoma City Thunder roster in 2009.

Siakam started playing basketball relatively late and wound up playing at Gods Academy in Lewisville, Texas before being recruited by New Mexico State University.

After being drafted by the Toronto Raptors in 2016, he spent time playing with their G-League affiliate before actually being able to play at the NBA level.

Both Ibaka and Siakam were players featured on the roster of Team Africa during the 2018 NBA Africa Game. While Ibaka is a more defensive-minded veteran player at this point in his NBA career, Siakam looks to be a breakout star going into the 2019-2020 NBA season, especially now that Kawhi Leonard has left the team.

Now more than ever, international players are getting their chance to shine in the NBA. Siakam is fresh off of winning not only an NBA Championship but also the 2019 Most Improved Player award.

With Kawhi now headed to the Los Angeles Clippers, Siakam will be in a position to shoulder more of the Raptors offence heading into next season.

The NBA’s only international team looks to be led by a rising star on the international stage in Siakam. Having a storyline like this to root for heading into the season can only be a positive for fans of the league both old and new.

  • Centrica chief executive Iain Conn to step down

British Gas owner Centrica’s chief executive Iain Conn is to step down from his post and retire from the company’s board next year.

He told the Today programme it was “a natural time for me to hand over”.

Centrica reported a pre-tax loss of £446m in the six months to June. It made a £704m profit this time in 2018.

The firm is also cutting its dividend and selling its investment in oil and gas exploration and production, but is launching a new partnership with Ford.

    Price cap impact

Profit at the company’s consumer division, which includes British Gas, was down 44% to £240m.

It said the decline reflected the impact of the government’s price cap, which was brought in at the start of 2019.

Profit at Centrica’s business division fell 89% to £11m, which it blamed on warm weather and outages at its nuclear power stations.

The company’s shares fell by more than 10% in early trading.

Mr Conn said: “The most difficult thing has been the price cap coming in. It cost British Gas £300m in profits this year,

“All the current price cap has done is actually delayed the issues rather than solve them, and I’m hoping a new fresh look by this new government may make changes.

“It’s always been said that the price cap is going to be temporary and we look forward to the day when it’s rolled back.”

He added: “We are finishing the journey to becoming a customer-facing energy and solution company. Once we have done that, it is the right time for me to hand over to a successor – a natural moment.

“We have been shifting a company to one in tune with a lower carbon economy.

“We grew consumer accounts in the first half of the year in the UK. We did lose 178,000 energy accounts, but we more than made up for it in the accounts in the other businesses.

“What seems to be happening is when we get close to being in the top five on a price comparison website, people prefer us

“We are bundling energy with services and we make money out of both. It’s early days, but I’m very encouraged by what’s happened in the first half of the year.”

Last year, Mr Conn was given a 44% rise in his pay to £2.4m.

    ‘Right leadership needed’

GMB union national secretary Justin Bowden said Mr Conn was leaving Centrica “in the last chance saloon”.

British Gas lost 742,000 customers last year and Mr Bowden added: “British Gas has to stop haemorrhaging customers and rewarding boardroom failure.

“Blessed with a loyal workforce, a top-class brand and the biggest customer base in the country it now needs the right leadership and a properly implemented strategic vision.”

Centrica also announced it was launching a partnership with Ford, as the carmaker seeks to expand its range of electric vehicles.

Under the deal, Centrica will deliver a dedicated home charging installation service for the next five years.

There will be special electric vehicle tariffs from British Gas and Bord Gáis Energy, which will allow Ford customers to benefit from lower energy prices for overnight charging.

  • Drug-tainted Aussie swimmer facing four-year ban: report

Australian swimmer Shayna Jack has been notified that she faces a four-year suspension after testing positive to a banned drug, unless she can prove her innocence, a report said Tuesday.

Jack, part of Australia’s 4x100m freestyle team that set a world record last year, tested positive to the banned drug Ligandrol, which helps build muscle mass, out of competition late last month.

The Daily Telegraph said the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority had told Jack she will receive a four-year suspension, the standard penalty for athletes who test positive for anabolic agents. The 20-year-old will be able to contest the sanction as part of normal processes.

Jack returned home days before the world championships in South Korea, citing “personal reasons”. On Sunday she strenuously denied intentionally taking the banned substance, which she intimated could be found in contaminated supplements.

Swimming Australia head coach Jacco Verhaeren, who arrived back in Brisbane from the meet on Tuesday, said he believed Jack could “definitely” bounce back from the doping scandal.

“There are cases where the athlete’s name is cleared and it was all a mistake or contamination or whatever it was. And sure they come back from that,” he told reporters.

The revelation has proved a huge embarrassment for Australian swimming, coming after Olympic champion Mack Horton’s high-profile protest against Chinese rival Sun Yang at the world championships.

Horton refused to share a podium with Sun, who was cleared of wrongdoing after being accused of smashing vials of blood following a test last year, a decision that is the subject of a World Anti-Doping Agency appeal.

Australia’s newspapers have plastered the story across both their back and front pages, while the social media backlash has been swift, with the swimmer being inundated by trolls calling for her to be banned and denouncing her as a “hypocrite”.

Her manager Phil Stoneman said Monday that the 20-year-old did not ingest the drug via supplement tablets and was now examining her diet.

“It could be meat, it could be mushrooms, it could be anything. It could be something in a bottle,” he told national broadcaster ABC.

“It’s a bit of jigsaw puzzle as to how this has come into her system.”

The Australian team were only told of her positive result on Saturday, with Horton later calling the revelations “disappointing”.

The controversy, which comes on the heels of the “Sandpapergate” cheating scandal that rocked the national cricket team last year, risks doing further damage to Australia’s sporting reputation.

  • Soldiers ‘arrest’ men with dreadlocks in Nigeria

Nigerian soldiers have been accused of arresting men with dreadlocks and those with tinted hair in Aba, a city in the south-eastern state of Abia.
“The masked soldiers flogged many of their victims and used scissors to cut off the hair and then threw the victims into their vehicles and zoomed off,” eyewitnesses told Punch newspaper.

The men were reportedly then taken to an “unknown destination” over the weekend.

An army spokesman, Major Aliu Kadiri, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria that the army was aware of the incident, and were “working on it”.
It is not clear if the “hair-cutting” arrests are linked to anti-kidnapping operations being conducted by security agencies across the country.

Nigeria’s army is also involved in an operation targeting cattle thieves and the Islamist insurgency in the north-east.

This is not the first time Nigeria’s security agencies have focused on those with dreadlocks.

In March, a police unit targeting gangs shot dead a bystander in Lagos, the country’s commercial hub, after a scuffle ensued when they went to arrest a man wearing dreadlocks in a bar.

A police spokesman told BBC Pidgin at the time that people with “dreadlocks and tattoos” have a “high chance of arrest”.

  • Pakistan plane: Army aircraft crashes into residential area killing 17

At least 17 people have been killed and 12 injured after a small military plane crashed into a residential area near the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi.

Five crew members and 12 civilians were among the dead, the army said.

The aircraft was on a training flight when it crashed and set off a fire across several homes. One witness said the plane was ablaze before the crash.

The King Air 350 turboprop reportedly took a steep turn near its destination airport before coming down.

Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad, is the site of the Pakistani army’s headquarters, and the plane belonged to the Pakistani Army’s aviation unit.

How did the plane come down?

Witnesses at the scene said the aircraft crashed into a family home in a residential area around 02:00 local time (07:00 GMT).

“I was awake when the plane flew over my room and it was already on fire in the air,” said resident Ghulam Khan. “The sound was so scary, it was only a small plane. It then fell on a house where a family used to live.”

Another witness, Yasir Baloch, said: “The tail of the plane was on fire and it took barely two to three seconds and it crashed four houses away from my house and burnt to ashes.”

A resident near the site of the crash who gave his name as Yamin said he had escaped his burning house with his wife, daughter and parents, but his brother, sister-in-law and nephew died.

“The window and door to their room was locked. We tried our best to get them out but couldn’t,” he said.

Pictures from the scene showed blackened buildings that had been reduced to rubble. A reporter from the AFP news agency said smoke was still rising from the wreckage and pieces of the plane were visible on a nearby roof.

Several injured were rushed to hospital, Pakistan’s emergency rescue services said. The bodies of the dead were taken away to be identified.

What is Pakistan’s safety record like?
Pakistan has a chequered aviation safety record, including a number of airliner crashes.

In 2010, an aircraft operated by private airline Airblue crashed near Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board – the deadliest air disaster in Pakistani history.

In 2012, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Pakistan’s Bhoja Air crashed in bad weather on its approach to land in Rawalpindi, killing all 121 passengers and six crew.

And in 2016, a Pakistan International Airlines plane burst into flames while travelling from northern Pakistan to Islamabad, killing 47 people.

  • Brazil jail riot leaves more than 50 dead

At least 52 people have been killed in a prison riot in Brazil which saw rival gangs battle for five hours, officials say.

Gang members from one prison block invaded another part of Altamira jail in Pará state.

Sixteen of the dead were decapitated and the remainder suffocated after part of the prison was set on fire, officials said at a news conference.

Two prison officers who were taken hostage have since been freed.

The violence began at about 07:00 local time (10:00 GMT), and ended at around noon, officials said.

Members of the Comando Classe A (CCA) gang set fire to a cell where rival gang members from Comando Vermelho (Red Command) were kept, the Pará state government said in a statement.

The structure of the cell allowed the fire to spread quickly, resulting in the death by asphyxiation of some inmates.

Officials said that the two prison officers taken hostage were soon released, because the goal of the attack was to strike at the rival gang – rather than at the prison guards.

There had been no prior warning or signs of an impending attack on this scale, the statement said.

Video reported to be from the prison carried by Brazilian media showed smoke billowing from at least one prison building, while another clip appeared to show inmates walking around on the rooftops.

The prison in Altamira where Monday’s violence broke out has a capacity of 200, but was occupied by 309 prisoners. Officials denied it was overcrowded.

Gang leaders involved in the attack were to be moved to federal prisons for isolation, if they were identified.

Violence in Brazilian prisons is not uncommon. The country has the world’s third-largest prison population of some 700,000 people, and overcrowding is a widespread problem.

Clashes between rival gangs are frequent, as are riots.

In May, 40 people were killed on the same day in four different prisons in Manaus in Amazonas state – a day after 15 died in prison fights in the area.

More than 130 people were killed in January 2017 alone, as violence broke out in several prisons between the country’s two largest gangs, resulting in lengthy riots and the eventual transfer of hundreds of prisoners.

Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro has vowed to bring in tighter controls in prisons, while building more across the country.

But this will not be straightforward as most prisons are controlled at the state level.

What causes violence in Brazil’s jails?

    Overcrowding

A crackdown on violent and drug-related offences has seen the country’s prison population boom in recent decades.

Overcrowding makes it hard for prison authorities to keep rival factions separate. It also raises tensions inside the cells, with inmates competing for limited resources such as mattresses and food.

    Gang warfare

Killings between rival gang members are common in Brazilian prisons.

This was exacerbated when a two-decade truce of sorts broke down in recent years between two of the country’s most powerful gangs – the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) drug gang and Rio de Janeiro’s Red Command.

    Lack of resources

    Many Brazilian prisons are underfunded.

Poorly-trained and badly-paid prison guards often face inmates who not only outnumber them but who also feel they have little to lose as they face long sentences already.

  • Capital One hack: Arrest after details of 100m US individuals stolen

The personal details of about 106 million individuals across the US and Canada were stolen in a hack targeting Capital One systems, the company has revealed.

The announcement came after the alleged hacker was arrested on Monday.

According to Capital One, the data included names, addresses and phone numbers of people who applied for its credit card products.

But the hacker did not gain access to credit card account numbers, it said.

Capital One said in a statement released on Monday that the breach affected approximately 100 million in the US and 6 million in Canada.

The statement added that about 140,000 social security numbers and 80,000 linked bank account numbers were compromised in the US.

In Canada, about one million social insurance numbers belonging to Capital One credit card customers were also compromised.

The hack was identified on July 19.

Capital One said the hacker was able to “exploit” a “configuration vulnerability” in the company’s infrastructure.

They added that it is unlikely the information was used for fraud but they would continue to investigate the breach.

The hacker managed to obtain personal information from applicants for credit cards, including credit scores, limits, balances, payment history and contact information.

Richard D. Fairbank, chairman and CEO of the company, said in a statement: “While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened.

“I sincerely apologise for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected and I am committed to making it right. “

Capital One will notify those affected and will provide them with free credit monitoring and identity protection.

  • Ghanaian forward Benjamin Tetteh scores to earn point for Sparta Prague in Czech

Ghanaian forward Benjamin Tetteh scored to help Sparta Prague earn an important away draw against SK Dynamo Ceske Budejovice in the Czech top-flight league.

Tetteh replaced Martin Hasek in the second half with the Maroons two goals down to help them claw back the deficit and draw 2-2.

The home side took a first-half two-goal lead, after Ivan Schranz opened the scoring just 4 minutes into the game before Jiri Kladrubsky made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time.

However, Tetteh’s introduction after the break seemed to have injected some fire power in Sparta’s attack.

Guelor Kanga pulled one back four minutes after the break before the former Dreams FC forward ensured the traveling side sneaked a point back home.

Tetteh has been on the radar of several clubs in Europe and in January Wolves were reported to be preparing a bid for the lanky attacker.

  • SA’s corruption fighter loses second case in a week

South Africa’s Public Protector – who investigates allegations of corruption by state officials – has lost a court case for the second time in a week.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s critics accuse her of political bias in her role.

She had instructed that disciplinary action be taken against the country’s Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan after stating that he had violated the constitution.

However, the High Court in Pretoria has suspended the order.

Last week, a court ruled that Ms Mkhwebane had lied under oath and acted in bad faith.

The courts have repeatedly overruled her, and President Cyril Ramaphosa is challenging another of her reports, which found he had lied to parliament.

  • Who gains most as Beyoncé champions African stars?

Some of Africa’s biggest music stars look set for success on a global scale having been handpicked by US singer Beyoncé to appear on her Lion King-inspired album.

While Nigerian stars like Wizkid and Burna Boy have already broken through to the mainstream in the UK and US, their collaboration with the superstar in The Lion King: The Gift is bound to give their careers a bigger boost.

The 14-track companion piece to the Disney film is filled with sounds akin to music currently rocking the continent. Beyoncé, who curated and produced the project, has called it a “love letter to Africa”.

“I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, and not just use some of the sound or my own interpretation of it,” she told ABC News.

“I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa.”

    Dilution or a new direction?

From lyrics in English, Swahili, Pidgin English, Zulu, Xhosa and Yoruba, the project incorporates several genres from Afrobeats, pop, R&B, hip-hop, and the South African version of house music known as Gqom.

“A lot of the drums, chants, all of these incredible new sounds mixed with some of the producers from America, we’ve kind of created our own genre”, Beyoncé told ABC.

African acts featured include Nigeria’s Tekno, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi and Tiwa Savage, as well as Cameroon’s Salatiel, and South Africa’s Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly. Several African producers also have credits on the album.

Alade said some artists claim to want to pay homage to their roots but are “all talk and no action”. This is not true of Beyoncé, she told the BBC.

“For someone of that calibre to dedicate time and effort to Africa, it goes to show our worth,” she added.

Afrobeats is perhaps the dominant genre thriving outside the continent – and in particular the UK. Along with Afropop and Afrofusion, these sounds are taking over playlists and dance floors across the world.

Beyoncé’s new project is a savvy attempt to blend “pure Afrobeats, mainstream pop and R&B sounds” for a non-African audience, said Nigerian broadcaster Adesope Olajide, popularly known as Shopsydoo.

He said this is more accessible and “soothing” to such listeners.

“It eventually becomes a sound that is not Afrobeats in its purest form but the best of sounds that a Beyoncé audience will be able to digest,” Shopsydoo told the BBC.

“I know a lot of people are thinking: ‘Maybe she’ll steal the sound and create her own’ but I don’t believe that. [She’s] involving these guys and girls, sharing her fan base with them.”

    But not everybody is onboard.

When the album was revealed, many East Africans shared their disappointment at being left out. Many of the film’s characters, after all, have Swahili names and animators for the original 1994 film reportedly based the setting on Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.

“We were not represented in her love letter to us. It hurts,” Kenyan singer Victoria Kimani said on Twitter.

    ‘The smartest people collaborate first’

Prior to featuring on Beyonce’s latest album, some of these artists were already well on their way to global recognition.

Wizkid’s US breakthrough came in 2016, when he featured on Canadian rapper Drake’s hit song One Dance, becoming the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the first song to hit one billion plays on streaming service Spotify.

This year also saw him and Burna Boy perform at Coachella in the US – one of the most famous festivals in the world.

Meanwhile Tiwa Savage, who already had a management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, signed an international recording deal with Universal Music Group in May.

Fellow Nigerian Tekno signed a deal a distribution deal last year with Universal Music Group Nigeria and Island Records, and Yemi Alade has been touring across Europe.

International features are mutually beneficial for global stars and African artists, said digital marketing director Kareem Mobolaji.

“Americans and others are paying more attention now. The likes of Wizkid have shown how their presence on songs can help increase sales and listening across Africa and indeed all over the world.”

So for Shopsydoo, Beyoncé will also gain by working with the African stars.

“It’s a bigger platform for the pop and mainstream world to recognise African artists”, and also a “brand-new following for Beyoncé by collaborating with some of Africa’s pop culture icons”, he said.

“The smartest business people are those who reach out to collaborate first.”

    Spotlight on the industry

“Afrobeats and Afropop are undeniably the fastest-growing black genres in the world outside of hip-hop,” broadcaster Shopsydoo told the BBC.

“It justifies the rush for African pop stars by international record labels.”

Digital music distributors TuneCore said World music, the category under which African music is mostly classified, is one of the fastest-growing music genres with a 57% increase in 2018.

Music streaming in Africa has also seen 146% growth – the fastest worldwide.

But piracy, distribution challenges and the legal structure around contracts and records plague the music industry in many African countries. Artists themselves with surely be watching the changes most closely.

“This [Beyoncé feature] will attract more major labels into our music and signing more of our local artists,” says Kareem Mobolaji, of marketing company Inglemind Concept Digital.

International record labels like Universal Music Group have already expanded to the continent with offices in Nigeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast and South Africa.

Sony Music, meanwhile, has bases in Nigeria and South Africa. Warner Music Group, which has a presence in South Africa, also recently partnered with Nigerian record label Chocolate City.

“The talent on ground is burgeoning and blooming and the international market is yearning for more,” Universal Music Nigeria’s general manager, Ezegozie Eze Jr, told the BBC after the company’s Lagos office opened last year.

“Nigerian artists have already demonstrated that they can sell out international venues. Their music is being played on high rotation on radio stations and clubs across Africa, Europe and the rest of the world and now is the time to take it to the next level.”

    Beyoncé’s African ties

Fans of US-born Beyoncé have been sharing a 2009 clip in which the singer reveals on stage that her ancestors were Nigerian, before performing the country’s national anthem:

Beyoncé’s interest in the continent has been evident over the years in her photo shoots, music videos, lyrics, performances and fashion choices.

She frequently supports African designers – sporting the work of South African creators Afrikanista and MmusoMaxwel in Johannesburg last year, and Senegal’s Sarah Diouf more recently:

Nigerian visual artist Laolu Senbanjo, known for his Sacred Art of the Ori, adorned the singer and her dancers with body paint for the 2016 music video Sorry.

Beyoncé also referenced the Yoruba deities Oshun, goddess of fertility, and Yemoja, goddess of the water, in her 2017 Grammy performance and an underwater photoshoot while pregnant.

Artists featured on The Lion King: The Gift say Beyoncé’s support for their talent underlines what African audiences have known all along.

“I feel like this is a great moment and there’ll be more to come,” Yemi Alade told the BBC.

South Africa’s Moonchild Sanelly, a huge Beyoncé fan who has long dreamed of such a collaboration, agreed.

“At this point I have ticked the box of my lifetime and I have just started.”
