  • Proposed New Zealand abortion law to give women right to choose

The New Zealand government released long-awaited plans Monday to overhaul its abortion laws, so that a termination is treated as a health issue and a woman’s choice rather than a crime.

Under the proposed law, a woman will have access to an abortion until 20 weeks’ pregnancy and would only require a medical examination after that.

The bill, to be introduced to parliament on Thursday, will be a conscience vote rather than along party lines.

New Zealand currently has restrictive laws listing abortion as a crime, but with a loophole that gives a woman access to a termination if two doctors agree a pregnancy would put her in physical or mental danger.

Government figures show there were about 13,000 abortions in New Zealand last year and only 57 took place after 20 weeks’ pregnancy.

“Abortion is the only medical procedure that is still a crime in New Zealand. It’s time for this to change,” Justice Minister Andrew Little said when releasing details of the proposed changes, after months of wrangling within the three-party ruling coalition.

“This bill will modernise the laws on abortion, by removing it from the Crimes Act and bringing the law into line with many other developed countries.

“Safe abortion should be treated and regulated as a health issue; a woman has the right to choose what happens to her body.”

The bill will also allow for “safe zones” 150 metres (yards) around abortion clinics to prevent women being harassed by protesters.

Little said he expected the law to pass its first reading but he was unsure how many MPs would vote for it.

MPs with religious objections are likely to vote against or abstain.

The lobby group Abortion Rights Aotearoa hailed the announcement as “a huge step forward” but questioned the need for a 20-week limit.

  • Walmart to keep selling guns despite recent shootings at its stores

Despite two deadly shootings at its stores in less than a week, American retail giant Walmart has no plans to stop selling guns and ammunition, a spokesman said Sunday.

A man opened fire with an assault rifle at a Walmart in Texas on Saturday, killing 20 people, just four days after a disgruntled employee shot dead two coworkers and wounded a responding police officer at one of the massive chain’s stores in Mississippi.

“We are focused on supporting our associates, our customers and the entire El Paso community,” spokesman Randy Hargrove said.

Following the El Paso shooting, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon posted a note on Instagram saying he “can’t believe” it was the second such in a week.

“My heart aches for the community in El Paso, especially the associates and customers at store 2201 and the families of the victims,” he wrote.

“I’m praying for them and I hope you will join me.”

Walmart founder Sam Walton loved guns — so much so that the American gun manufacturer Remington named a hunting rifle model after him. But the retail giant maintains that its target audience is sport shooters and hunters.

Walmart has made gun policy changes over the years, such as in 1993, when it stopped selling handguns.

The company stopped selling semi-automatic rifles in 2015, and after the Parkland, Florida shooting in February 2018 — which saw 17 people killed at a high school — Walmart raised the minimum age to buy guns and ammunition in its stores to 21.

Additionally, “Walmart goes beyond federal law requiring all customers to pass a background check before purchasing any firearm,” said Hargrove.

He also noted that all new Walmart employees are required to complete an active shooter training program, which they then must pass on a computer four times a year.

But since it is the largest retail chain in the United States, Walmart continues to attract criticism for its enduring stock of firearms.

When the company tweeted it was “in shock” after the tragedy in El Paso, many Twitter users replied: “Stop selling guns.”

  • ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ dethrones ‘Lion King’ to top N.America box office

“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” dethroned “The Lion King” in North American theaters, taking in an estimated $60.8 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday.

The latest installment in the long-running Fast & Furious franchise, “Hobbs & Shaw” features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham facing off against “cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist” Idris Elba.

It ended the box office reign of “The Lion King,” a remake of the 1994 animated film that employs hyper-realistic computer-generated images with a voice cast including Donald Glover as Simba and Beyonce as Nala, together with Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and James Earl Jones.

“The Lion King” earned $38.2 million for second place, topping director Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” which has earned rave reviews and took in $20 million for third place.

“Once Upon a Time” — the ninth of the 10 movies Tarantino has said he will make before retiring — is set in Tinseltown in 1969 and features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Al Pacino.

In fourth place was “Toy Story 4,” which managed $8.2 million.

The latest installment in the family-friendly Disney/Pixar animation franchise that began in 1995, the movie features the voices of Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear).

“Spider-Man: Far from Home” — which continues where “Avengers: Endgame” left off and stars Tom Holland as the Marvel superhero — came in fifth with $7.8 million.

Rounding out the weekend’s top 10 were:

    “Yesterday” ($2.4 million)

    “The Farewell” ($2.4 million)

    “Crawl” ($2.2 million)

    “Aladdin” ($2 million)

    “Annabelle Comes Home” ($875,000)

  • Suarez sinks Arsenal in Griezmann’s Camp Nou debut

Luis Suarez’s late volley saw Barcelona to a 2-1 win in the Joan Gamper Trophy friendly in front of a bumper crowd at the Camp Nou, as Antoine Griezmann made his home debut following his big money move from Atletico Madrid.

Suarez flashed home Sergi Roberto’s lofted pass in the 89th minute in front of nearly 99,000 people, who packed the stands to see new signings Griezmann and Frenckie De Jong, with his strike and Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ comical own goal cancelling out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s fine first half opener.

Barca are aiming for European glory this campaign after suffering Champions League humiliations against Roma and Liverpool the last two seasons.

Before the match captain Lionel Messi addressed those defeats — which saw Barca throw away comfortable first-leg leads before being dumped out — in a speech to the crowd.

However Messi didn’t take the field and it was left to his long-time strike partner rather than the new boys to see off the Gunners after a powerful second half display.

  • 2020 Democrats call for gun laws, blame Trump’s rhetoric for mass shootings

Democratic presidential candidates sought to lay blame Sunday on President Donald Trump following a pair of mass shootings in Ohio and Texas, saying his language against minorities promotes racial division and violence.

At public events and on television, several candidates pointed to a need for more gun restrictions, such as universal background checks. But they directed much of their criticism at Trump, seeking to draw a link between the shootings in Dayton and El Paso that have left more than two dozen dead and months of presidential rhetoric against immigrants and people of colour.

“There is complicity in the president’s hatred that undermines the goodness and the decency of Americans regardless of what party,” New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said. “To say nothing in a time of rising hatred, it’s not enough to say that ‘I’m not a hate monger myself.’ If you are not actively working against hate, calling it out, you are complicit in what is going on.”

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said confronting white nationalist terrorism would be embarrassing for a president who “helped stoke many of these feelings in this country to begin with.”

“At best, he’s condoning and encouraging white nationalism,” Buttigieg said.

Sen. Kamala Harris of California also found blame in Trump’s use of language, which she said has “incredible consequence.”

“We have a president of the United States who has chosen to use his words in a way that have been about selling hate and division among us,” she told reporters before attending services at a black church in Las Vegas.

Sen. Bernie Sanders opened a town hall meeting with a moment of silence and by calling for universal background checks for firearms purchases and more restrictions on assault weapons.

“Assault weapons are designed for one reason. They are military weapons. And I don’t have to explain that to the people in Las Vegas who experienced the worst gun tragedy in the history of this country,” Sanders said. He urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to call senators back to Washington, saying the Senate should “have a special session to address gun violence in America and let us finally have the courage to take on the NRA.”

He also called out the president.

“I say to President Trump, please stop the racist anti-immigrant rhetoric,” he said. “Stop the hatred in this country which is creating the kind of violence that we see.”

The call for McConnell to bring senators back to deal with gun violence was echoed by other candidates, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“We should vote within 48 hours on the two background check bills that have already passed the House,” Warren said. “It’s not everything we need to do on gun safety, but we could take important steps, and we could demonstrate to the American people that the gun manufacturers are not the ones who are calling the shots in Washington.”

The candidates and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer calling for the Senate to come back may not get their wish. McConnell fell and fractured his shoulder Sunday at home in Kentucky.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted praise of law enforcement and said that “information is rapidly being accumulated in Dayton” and that “much has already be learned in El Paso.”

“Hate has no place in our country, and we’re going to take care of it,” Trump declared before boarding Air Force One for the flight back to Washington from New Jersey, where he spent the weekend. While connecting “hate” and mental illness to the shootings, Trump made no direct mention of gun laws, a factor brought up by Democratic officials and those seeking their party’s nomination to challenge Trump’s re-election next year.

He tried to assure Americans he was dealing with the problem and defended his administration in light of criticism following the latest in a string of mass shootings. “We have done much more than most administrations,” he said, without elaboration. “We have done actually a lot. But perhaps more needs to be done.”

In El Paso, authorities were investigating whether the attack was a hate crime after the emergence of a racist, anti-immigrant screed that was posted online shortly beforehand. Detectives sought to determine if it was written by the man who was arrested. The border city has figured prominently in the immigration debate and is home to 680,000 people, most of them Latino.

In Dayton, the suspected shooter was shot to death by responding officers. Authorities said the shooter was carrying a .223-caliber rifle and had additional high-capacity magazines. No motive has been given for the attacks.

Former Texas congressman and El Paso native Beto O’Rourke said that Trump is a white nationalist. O’Rourke said El Paso “will overcome this,” as he called for universal background checks, ending the sale of weapons of war into communities and red flag laws.

“We’ve got to acknowledge the hatred, the open racism that we’re seeing,” O’Rourke said. “There’s an environment of it in the United States. We see it on Fox News, we see it on the internet. But we also see it from our commander in chief and he is encouraging this. He doesn’t just tolerate it, he encourages it.”

Julian Castro, who previously served as San Antonio mayor and U.S. housing secretary, described “a very toxic brew of white nationalism,” and called on Trump to “to try and unite Americans instead of fanning the flames of bigotry.” He pointed as well to the high rates of gun ownership in Texas, saying “the answer is not more people with guns.”

O’Rourke and Buttigieg appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union,” and Booker and Castro were on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Warren spoke on MSNBC.

  • Pilots arrested in Scotland before US flight on suspicion of intoxication

A flight from Glasgow, Scotland, to Newark, New Jersey, was canceled Saturday after two pilots were arrested on suspicion of being intoxicated, according to officials with United Airlines and Scottish Police.

Police Scotland told CNN in a statement that two men were arrested at the airport before boarding in relation to a law that bans “carrying out pilot functions or activity while exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol.”
The men, aged 61 and 45, “have been arrested and remain in police custody pending a court appearance on Tuesday 6th August 2019,” police said.
Both pilots were “immediately removed from service,” a United Airlines spokesman Jonathan Guerin said in a statement.

“The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority. We hold all of our employees to the highest standards and have a strict, no tolerance policy for alcohol,” Guerin added.

Flight UA162 was subsequently canceled after the arrests and passengers were provided with hotel and meal vouchers and were re-booked on alternate flights, United Airlines said.

The arrests come days after a Delta pilot was removed from an airplane at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol.

In a statement released to CNN on Tuesday, Delta spokeswoman Kate Modolo confirmed the airline was working with local authorities.

“Delta’s alcohol policy is among the strictest in the industry and we have no tolerance for violation. Delta is cooperating with local authorities in their investigation,” the statement said.

  • Well continue Ada to Ningo-Prampram sea defence project Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, on Sunday assured the chiefs and people of the Ada Traditional Area that the next NDC government will continue with the sea defence project to protect communities along the Ada to Ningo Prampram coastline.

Speaking at a church service to climax the 82nd Ada Asafotufiami Festival, Mr. Mahama who is also a former President said the first phase of the sea defence project, which was completed during his administration, is helping curb the fast rate of erosion of the beachfront.

“When I form my government in 2021, I want to assure you, Nene Akuaku, that we will reinforce the current sea defence works, and continue with the second phase. This will include the Kablevu area, Lolonya, Goi, Anyamam, Akplabanya, Wokumagber to Ningo Prampram,” Mahama stated.

Present at the church service were Nene Abrem Kabu Akuaku III, Paramount Chief of Ada and President of the Ada Traditional Council, Chiefs and Queen Mothers of the Ada Traditional Area, the Local Council of Churches and citizens of Ada.

He challenged the chiefs and people to move to the next stage of developing a sustainable, local economic blueprint, that will harness the opportunities of the Ada area, which include tourism, vegetable and fruit farming.

“You have one of the most resourced traditional areas of this country, and I urge you to move to the next step. Apart from the tourism and hospitality business opportunities, this area has also proven to be a fruit and vegetable basket”, he advised.

  • Suspects arrested over murder of Policewoman to face court on Tuesday

Some of the five persons arrested over the murder of a Policewoman in Tamale will be arraigned later this week.

Police in the Northern Region rounded up the suspects in a swoop last Friday, at the Aboabo forest in Tamale.

They are believed to be behind the violent attack on the Tamale-Kunbungu road in which Corporal Agatha Nabin was killed.

Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, DSP Yussif Tanko told Citi News that one of the suspects who was wounded during the swoop is receiving treatment under police guard.

“The suspect who was wounded is still on admission and he is responding to treatment and as you know we still have our guards around him to make sure that no unwanted person gets into contact with him. [The others] are still in custody, interrogations are still ongoing and by Tuesday, those who are supposed to be in court will be in court.”

Police report on how the incident occurred said on Tuesday, July 30, the deceased, a female officer, was on duty at the Kumbungu Road checkpoint near Star Oil Filing Station, when an oncoming saloon car was signalled to stop upon approaching the barrier.

But the occupants of the saloon car who were said to be four in number, and dressed in military camouflage with face masks, shot at the deceased, killing her instantly.

Another officer who was on duty and decided to take cover following the shooting, had her weapon and that of the deceased, taken away by the robbers.

A third officer who was also at the barrier shot at the robbers, but they managed to escape with the two weapons.

  • Paulo Dybala: Man Utd end talks with Juventus striker over wage demands

Manchester United have ended talks with Paulo Dybala because of the Juventus striker’s wage demands.

United entered talks with the Argentine, 25, as part of a proposed swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku, 26.

However, they were dubious about whether Dybala wanted to join them and viewed his wage demands as excessive.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has targeted young, hungry players and United officials concluded further bids for Dybala would be a move away from that.

Dybala joined Juventus from Palermo in 2015 and scored 10 times for the Italian side last season, including the only goal in the first leg of the Champions League group match against United at Old Trafford in October.

Uncertainty remains over the future of Belgium international Lukaku, who joined the Red Devils from Everton for an initial £75m in July 2017 and scored 12 league goals last term.

Last month United rejected a 60m euro (£53.9m) bid from Juventus’ Serie A rivals Inter Milan for the forward.

But Solskjaer says he has “no doubt” France midfielder Paul Pogba – who has also been linked with a move – still wants to play for the club.

United have reached an agreement to sign England centre-back Harry Maguire from Leicester for £80m – a world record fee for a defender, with the transfer due to be finalised in the near future.

    Conte ‘very hopeful’ over Lukaku
Inter boss Antonio Conte revealed he was still hopeful of signing Lukaku.

“We continue to work on it in the best possible way,” he said after his team’s pre-season friendly draw at Tottenham.

“I understand there are some gaps that need to be filled but at the moment I am very hopeful that this will happen.”

    Analysis
The emergence of young players such as Mason Greenwood during pre-season, allied to the presence on Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez in the United squad means it is by no means certain a replacement will come in even if Lukaku does leave.

United are continuing to look at potential signings but have ruled out a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, despite being linked with him for much of the summer.

James Gilbert Kwarteng is accused of ordering items from Amazon, taking out the original content and returning the boxes filled with dirt.

He received a refund from Amazon and sold the original item, according to El Español and El Diario de Mallorca.

The success of the alleged scam by Kwarteng, who has been released on bail, enabled him to create his own company, according to reports.

According to ktvu.com, Kwarteng would buy something like an iPhone and, once he received it, he would open it up and keep the phone.

Then he went back to Amazon and returned the item. What he sent back was an iPhone package that he filled up with dirt that weighed the same as the iPhone.

When Amazon gets returned packages, there isn’t someone that actually opens it up to make sure you sent back what you were supposed to – it’s just scanned, weighed, and put on the shelf. Then you rmoney is returned.

The return packages would end up sitting around in Amazon’s warehouses where they aren’t checked often. The scam wasn’t discovered until through a random search where someone opened a box and discovered it was full of dirt.

Amazon’s return policy states items shipped from the website, including Amazon Warehouse, can be returned within 30 days of receipt. Refunds are processed in two business days and customers can expect their funds show in their account in three to five business days.

  • COPEC eyes meeting with govt over ESLA increment

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) says it is pushing for a discussion with government this week to argue for the scrapping of the increase in the Energy Sector Levies (ESLA).

The Chamber earlier announced that its members will protest at the Finance Ministry to ensure the new levy is scrapped if dialogue fails.

The government announced the introduction of the levy in the 2019 mid-year budget review to enable it raise more revenue to defray the energy sector legacy debt.

But Duncan Amoah, the Executive Secretary of COPEC, again says his outfit will do everything possible to get the decision reversed.

“We will officially request to meet the ministry, request to meet government, request to meet the energy ministry and attempt some dialogue.”

“If, however, all these fail then clearly, we will have to resort to what we have done all over the period; a protest. A legitimate protest,” he added.

The mid-year budget review and subsequent Parliamentary approval saw an upward adjustment in the Road Fund Levy (RFL), the Energy Debt Recovery Levy (EDRL) and the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy (PSRL).

As a result, drivers and transport union members have been agitating for an increment in transport fares because of the expected fuel price increase.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has, however, urged its members to remain calm as it works with the Ministry of Transport and other stakeholders to reach an agreement on a possible increment in transport fares.

Transport fares were last increased by the GPRTU in April 2017 by 15 percent.

  • US mass shootings: Trump condemns deadly attacks amid criticism

President Donald Trump has said “hate has no place” in the US after 29 people were killed in two mass shootings over the weekend, amid accusations that he bears some responsibility.

An attack on a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas left 20 dead, while nine died in a shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

Mr Trump said “perhaps more has to be done” to stop such attacks.

But critics said he was part of the problem, citing his anti-immigrant rhetoric and opposition to gun control.

A 21-year-old white man arrested over Saturday’s shooting in the Texas city of El Paso is believed to have posted an online document calling the attack a response to “the Hispanic invasion” of the state.

The motives of the Ohio gunman, who killed his sister and eight others on Sunday before being shot dead by police, are unclear.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Trump said mass shootings needed to be stopped.

“This has been going on for years, for years and years in our country and we have to get it stopped,” he said.

He went on to link both attacks to a “mental illness problem”, saying the gunmen were “very, very seriously mentally ill”.

The gunman opened fire on a crowded Walmart on Saturday with an assault-style rifle, and surrendered after being confronted by police officers outside the store.

The mass shooting, believed to be the eighth deadliest in modern US history, took place in a city where most of the population of 680,000 is of Hispanic descent.

In addition to the 20 fatalities, 26 people were injured in the shooting.

The Walmart, near the Cielo Vista Mall, was full of shoppers buying back-to-school supplies at the time of the shooting, and witnesses described scenes of chaos as customers fled for their lives.

Security camera images of the attacker show an armed man in a dark T-shirt wearing eyeglasses and what appear to be ear protectors.

The victims have not yet been named by police, but Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said six Mexican nationals were among the dead and seven others were injured.

The suspect has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius, a resident of the city of Allen, in the Dallas area, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso.

He has been charged with capital murder, meaning he could face the death penalty.

He is believed to be the author of a text posted on 8chan, an online message board frequently used by the far right, which describes a “cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion” in alluding to Hispanic people in the US.

The four-page document, reportedly posted some 20 minutes before police received the first emergency call from the Walmart, also expresses support for the gunman who killed 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March.

US cybersecurity firm Cloudflare said it would terminate 8chan as a customer following the attack.

“The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths,” Cloudflare chief executive officer Matthew Prince wrote in a blog post.

Officials said the shooting was being treated as a “domestic terrorist case”.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the attorney general was considering litigation claiming that terrorism was committed against Mexicans in the shooting. Such an action could lead to the extradition of the gunman, he said.

“For Mexico, this individual is a terrorist,” he told reporters.

    What happened in Dayton?

Connor Betts, 24, opened fire in a popular nightlife district in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Security camera footage shows dozens of people racing through the doorway of the local Ned Peppers nightclub.

Seconds later, Betts is seen running towards the venue and being hit by police gunfire as he reaches the door.

Police said Betts had worn body armour and came carrying extra ammunition for his .223-calibre assault rifle with high-capacity magazines.

“Had this individual made it through the doorway of Ned Peppers with that level of weaponry, there would have been catastrophic injury and loss of life,” said Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl.

Officials said it was too early to speculate about motives for the attack.

But responding to questions about a possible racial element to the killings, Mr Biehl said there was nothing to suggest a “bias motive”.

Police said the rifle was ordered online from Texas and there was nothing in Betts’ history that would have stopped him from buying the gun legally.

His sister Megan was among the dead.

Police listed all nine of those who died. They were:

    Lois Oglesby, black female, 27

    Megan Betts, white female, 22

    Saeed Saleh, black male, 38

    Derrick Fudge, black male, 57

    Logan Turner, white male, 30

    Nicholas Cummer, white male, 25

    Thomas McNichols, black male, 25

Beatrice Warren Curtice, black female, 36

    Monica Brickhouse, black female, 39

Twenty-seven people were injured in the attack.

    What has the reaction been?
The shootings have given renewed momentum to gun control debate and put fresh scrutiny on the president’s rhetoric.

“He’s an open avowed racist and is encouraging more racism in this country,” Democratic presidential candidate and El Paso native Beto O’Rourke told CNN.

“Our president isn’t just failing to confront and disarm these domestic terrorists, he is amplifying and condoning their hate,” tweeted fellow Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg.

Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders said Mr Trump’s language “creates a climate which emboldens violent extremists.”

But acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney rejected the Democrats’ allegations and attributed the attacks to “sick” individuals.

“There’s no benefit here in trying to make this a political issue, this is a social issue and we need to address it as that,” he told ABC.

Mr Trump, who has made curbing illegal immigration one of the key points of his presidency, has previously made derogatory comments about Mexican migrants and has called large groups of migrants trying to reach the US an “invasion”.

In recent weeks, Mr Trump has been accused of racism after his attacks on members of Congress who are members of racial or ethnic minorities.

In 2017 the president said he would “never, ever infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms”.

  • GNAT calls for rethinking of the Policy of Agriculture Education

The Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) in-charge of professional development, Ms Gifty Apanbil has called for the rethinking of the policy of agriculture education in the country.

She explained that, when one considers the world economy in general, Ghana has a comparative advantage in agriculture, however, the study of agricultural science in the basic and secondary education level was continuously being downplayed.

Ms Apanbil said the situation had led to continuous dwindling in the number of students offering agriculture-related subjects at the universities. The Deputy General Secretary of GNAT was speaking at the closing ceremony of the one-week in-service training workshop of GNAT/Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF) Project for selected teachers in Eastern Region at Kyebi.

She appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and communities to see teachers as development partners, protect and support them when they are posted to their communities.

Ms Apanbil called on teachers to be conscious of their safety wherever they are posted and if they found themselves unsafe, they should report to the Teachers Union and relocate for safety.

The First Trustee of the GNAT Council, Ms Abena Gyamera called for a determined effort to end the high attrition rate of teachers in the Ghana Education Service.

She said about 7,000 teachers leave the service annually, which she considered too high and alarming.

  • NAKDeF donates ambulance to New Abirem Government Hospital

The Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAKDeF) has donated an ambulance to the New Abirem Government Hospital to improve health care delivery at the hospital.

The ambulance is a Toyota land cruiser with basic emergency kits such as oxygen inhaler, fire extinguisher, stretcher, ventilator among others.

Handing over the keys of the ambulance to the hospital, Professor Edward Ntifo-Siaw, the Moderator of the Social Responsibility Forum (SRF), pointed out that Nananom through the SRF, submitted a request to the foundation concerning the urgent need of an ambulance by the New Abirem Government Hospital, hence, the donation.

He said the SRF had been created by NAKDeF to serve as an intermediary between Newmont Goldcorp catchment communities and the company in order to carry out development projects.

He said the SRF has been tasked by NAKDeF to monitor the running of the ambulance as they would account for services rendered by it at their quarterly meetings.

This is to ensure the proper maintenance of the ambulance by the hospital to enable it last longer.

Professor Ntifo- Siaw assured that they would continue to lobby with NAKDeF to provide support to the hospital and other CHPs compounds in the area.

He was hopeful that the donation of the ambulance would meet the health needs of the inhabitants of the area.

Dr Atta-Larbi Sakyi, the Medical Superintendent who received the keys of the ambulance on behalf of the hospital thanked Newmont Goldcorp for their support over the years and also thanked NAkDef for the ambulance.

He said it was timely support and promised to ensure that the ambulance was always in good condition and used for the intended purpose.

  • Ed Sheeran breaks U2’s tour record

Ed Sheeran has thanked his fans after breaking a tour record set by U2.

The singer-songwriter’s Divide tour will be officially the biggest, most attended and highest grossing of all time when he plays in Germany later.

He wrote on Instagram: “Thanks so much for each and every one of you who have come to a show. 12 shows left, will never forget it x.”

The tour began in March 2017 and will culminate at Chantry Park in Sheeran’s local town Ipswich later this month.

By the time the finale comes around he will have spent 893 days on the road, compared to the 760 days U2 toured.

According to trade publication Pollstar, the Divide tour’s final show tally is 255 compared with U2’s 100 dates on their 360 Tour.

Sheeran also surpassed Bono and co’s tour attendance record of 7.3 million with a gig in France in May.

The volume of Divide shows was the key to breaking the record despite Sheeran’s lower average of 34,541 per show, nearly half of U2’s 66,091.

Sheeran’s manager Stuart Camp said the achievement was “truly incredible”.

“I don’t think there’s much of a coincidence that my favourite band growing up was U2. I’m not putting us at that level because they’ve obviously maintained their career for much longer, but to even be in the same ballpark as them or spoken in the same sentence with a touring act like that is very humbling.”

The 28-year-old is also enjoying a third week at the top of the UK album charts with his latest offering, No.6 Collaborations Project, which features some of his famous friends including Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Eminem.

  • Man City edge Liverpool on penalties in entertaining Community Shield

Manchester City won the Community Shield on penalties after edging Liverpool in an entertaining game in front of a raucous Wembley.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s penalty was saved by Claudio Bravo with Gabriel Jesus scoring the winning kick.

The meeting between two outstanding sides did not disappoint.

City’s Raheem Sterling finally scored his first goal against his old club when he turned home David Silva’s flick-on from close range.

The woodwork was hit three times in quick succession in the second half, as Sterling struck the post with a one on one, Virgil van Dijk shot against the underside of the bar and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah hit a post.

The Reds were level when Joel Matip headed home from Van Dijk’s cross.

At that stage, Liverpool were the most likely team to win with Salah having at least three chances – most remarkably when his header was sensationally cleared off the line by a Kyle Walker bicycle kick.

And so the game went straight to penalties with City scoring all of theirs.

A game whose competitive status is often questioned – and might end up meaning little as the season goes on – was nonetheless an entertaining start to the top-level season. A curtain-raiser if you will.

  • Six-year-old boy thrown from 10th floor of Tate Modern

A six-year-old boy was thrown five floors from the 10th floor of the Tate Modern art gallery in central London, police said.

He landed on a fifth floor roof and was taken to hospital by air ambulance after he fell at about 14:45 BST on Sunday.

The boy’s condition is described as critical.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the Met Police said.

They said the six-year-old was thrown from a viewing platform.

“We treated a person at the scene and took them to hospital as a priority,” a London Ambulance Service (LAS) spokesman said.

A police spokesman said there was “nothing to suggest [the suspect] is known to the victim”.

The teenager had remained on the platform after the boy fell, police said.

Visitors were initially locked inside the gallery at Bankside on the South Bank.

    ‘Where’s my son?’

Admin worker Nancy Barnfield, 47, of Rochdale, was at the 10th floor viewing gallery with a friend and their children when her friend heard a “loud bang”.

Ms Barnfield said she turned around and saw a woman screaming: “Where’s my son, where’s my son?”

Members of the public quickly gathered around a man who was nearby, she said.

Ms Barnfield said: “We did not notice the mum before, we noticed her after because she was hysterical by then.”

She said the person who was restrained by members of the public before the police arrived “just stood there and was quite calm”.

    Stretcher carried

Eyewitness Stuart Haggas said he saw emergency crews moving along the roof between the gallery’s Turbine Hall and its recent extension.

“They were carrying a stretcher with someone on it,” he said, “plus a second stretcher was waiting by the door.”

BBC correspondent Jonny Dymond, who was also there, said visitors were “funnelled towards the main Turbine Hall and the exits were all closed”.

“There were quite a lot of families with children, and security guards told us we couldn’t leave,” he said.

“There were at least two fire engines, 10 police cars and an incident control unit. Parts of the exterior of the building were taped off.”

The Tate Modern opened in the disused power station on the River Thames in 2000.

It was the UK’s most popular tourist attraction in 2018 with 5.9m visitors, according to the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.

  • Kashmir leaders under house arrest as unrest grows

Top politicians in Indian-administered Kashmir have been put under house arrest, days after thousands of troops were deployed to the disputed region.

Public meetings have been banned and reports say mobile networks and the internet have been restricted.

Last week authorities also ordered tourists and Hindu pilgrims to leave, citing a “terror threat” against an annual pilgrimage to a major shrine.

It is unclear what is behind the latest moves, which have stoked tensions.

It was in the early hours of Monday that two former chief ministers of Indian-administered Kashmir, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest.

The two leaders tweeted late on Sunday night about their impending house arrests and the situation there.

No explanation has been given yet but it comes amid speculation Delhi might be poised to remove Kashmir’s special privileges, such as a provision which prevents people from outside the state buying land there.

Earlier, the detained politicians and other leaders issued a resolution warning Delhi of “consequences” if it “changed the special status of Kashmir”.

A cabinet meeting has been scheduled for 09:30 local time (04:00 GMT).

India’s ruling BJP party stated in its manifesto that it would aim to revoke the part of the constitution, Article 35A, that means only permanent residents can buy land in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Such a move would spark anger and escalate tensions with Pakistan. India and Pakistan both claim all of Muslim-majority Kashmir, but control only parts of it.

In addition to the evacuation order in the wake of the terror warnings issued by the authorities, there have also been reports of skirmishes across the de facto border in recent days.

India accuses Pakistan of backing militant groups based in Kashmir, which Pakistan denies.

The influx of troops, the terror warnings and the speculation about Kashmir’s status have alarmed residents across the Indian-ruled region, many of whom queued for hours outside petrol stations, supermarkets and cash machines.

The last time comparable restrictions were imposed on Kashmir was in 2016 after the killing of a popular rebel leader sparked months of street protests that left dozens dead.

  • Hong Kong hit by transport chaos ahead of city-wide strike

Protesters in Hong Kong have taken to the streets in an attempt to disrupt transport services, ahead of a city-wide strike later on Monday.

There were delays on the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) as scuffles broke out between commuters and activists who tried to stop trains leaving.

At the airport, more than 200 flights were cancelled as authorities warned passengers about potential disruptions.

It follows the ninth consecutive weekend of protests in Hong Kong.

At a press conference on Monday, the city’s leader Carrie Lam said the “extensive disruptions in the name of certain demands have seriously undermined Hong Kong’s law and order, and are pushing our city… to the verge of a very dangerous situation”.

    What is planned for Monday?

Protests have been planned across the city, with strike organisers saying more than 14,000 people from across 20 sectors have vowed to take part.

Workers from sectors like the civil service – who are ordered to be politically neutral – have reportedly agreed to participate.

Civil servants were among those who took part in demonstrations that started on Friday and continued throughout the weekend.

Violent clashes broke out between protesters and police, culminating in police firing tear gas.

    Which flights are affected?

Most of the cancelled flights are with local carrier Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines.

Hong Kong airport, one of the busiest in the world, said travellers should check its website and seek updates directly from the airlines.

“The Airport Authority advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information, and to proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight time have been confirmed,” the airport said in a statement.

Even getting to the airport has been more difficult with protesters forcing the Airport Express train service to be briefly suspended.

What’s behind the Hong Kong protests?

The protests were initially sparked by a controversial bill that would allow China to extradite suspects from Hong Kong to the mainland.

Critics said it would undermine the territory’s judicial independence and could be used to target those who spoke out against the Chinese government.

Although the bill has now been suspended, demonstrators want it to be fully withdrawn.

Their demands have broadened to include the resignation of the city’s leader Carrie Lam, and the dropping of riot charges linked to the protests.

Hong Kong – a former British colony – is part of China but enjoys unique freedoms not seen on the mainland.

Tensions rose further last week as more than 40 activists appeared in court on Wednesday charged with rioting, after protests that turned violent.

They could face up to 10 years behind bars if convicted.

China’s People’s Liberation Army has so far stayed out of the protests, but China’s top policy office in Hong Kong has previously condemned the protests, calling then “horrendous incidents” that have caused “serious damage to the rule of law”.

Unease rose last week when China’s army in Hong Kong posted a video on Chinese social media network Weibo showing soldiers conducting anti-riot drills.

  • Albert Adomah shines on league debut for Nottingham Forrest

Winger Albert Adomah played his first league match for Nottingham Forrest on Saturday in their 2-1 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

The 31-year-old played the entire duration and was one of four Forest debutants along with goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, Alfa Semedo and Tiago Silva.

Adomah was vital in their opening goal scored by Matty Cash who drove a shot inside the near post following a neat exchange of passes with the Ghana international.

But West Brom took just seven minutes to equalise as on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Muric made his first mistake.

Muric also saw a cross from Phillips loop high over his head and inside the far post to make it 2-1 to the visitors in the 26th minute.

The 19-year-old replaced Mikkel Rygaard Jensen before the start of the second half and found the back of the net after 82 minutes.

Kudus was making his first appearance of the season after recovering from injury which sidelined him for the first three matches.

  • Yusif Chibsah bemoans FC Porto refusal to reduce Majeed Waris’ €6 million asking price

Representative of Majeed Waris, Yusif Chibsah has complained bitterly about FC Porto’s reluctance to lower their asking price for the striker.

Waris excelled on a loan spell at French Ligue 1 FC Nantes last season after scoring five goals and registering three assists.

The Canaries have expressed their interest in signing the Ghana international on a permanent deal but the move seemed to hit hurdle over FC Porto’s €6 million asking price.

The 27-year-old, who is under contract at the Estadio do Dragao until June 2022, has been demoted to the club’s second team as his agent is pushing to strike a deal for him to leave the club.

“Majeed is training with team B. He has a contract until 2022, so another three years, and we are trying to figure out what the club wants to do with him,” says Chibsah.

“FC Porto only releases him for six million euros. I am trying to unblock the situation, it is not easy. He had a good time in France, but that amount is driving many people away.”

  • Foreign Ministry, ECOWAS sensitize citizens on free movement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have commenced a two-day sensitization and support programme for citizens in West Africa on ECOWAS national biometric card.

It seeks to among other things raise awarenesses among citizens in the subregion on various regional instruments on free movement on migration.

Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, speaking at the opening ceremony, said despite existing protocols on travels in the region, the ECOWAS region continued to face challenges which delay the actualization of free movement as envisaged by its founders.

These challenges, she said, include lack of knowledge of the rights and responsibilities enshrined in the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol and related texts,
irregular migration, transnational crime, such as human trafficking, vulnerability of ECOWAS Community Citizens, migrants and travelers within the ECOWAS region.

According to her, lack of valid travel documents and identification cards for community citizens, migrants and travelers, high level of harassment and extortion of money at the border posts and vulnerability of cross-border traders and marketers.

She noted that “after over six decades of independence of ECOWAS member states, this should not be our story. We ought to chart a path towards real regional integration which should lead to the development, prosperity and wellbeing of our people.”

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has meanwhile stressed the need to protect migrants traveling across the ECOWAS subregion.

IOM Ghana Chief of Mission, Sylvia Lopez- Ekra, made the statement in Accra at a separate two-day advocacy, sensitization and support programme on the implementation of the ECOWAS national biometric card.

The IOM Chief of Mission thanked the Government of Ghana and ECOWAS for holding the town hall meeting.

Touching on the migration situation around the world, she said “we live in an era of unprecedented human mobility.”

Today, she revealed, one in every seven person is a migrant.

She therefore observed the need for migrants protection.

In Africa, she said, young people risk their lives through the Mediterranean to travel to Europe.

Young women, according to her, are deceived by some travel agencies in their quests to get domestic jobs overseas.

“Stories of abuse are abound in our newspapers and on our television,” she said.

The need to protect all migrants traveling through ECOWAS region is crucial, she stated.

ECOWAS officials, civil society and the media, according to her, have a role to play in raising public awareness on free movement in the region.

She stated that migration has always been and will always be; it is here to stay and will always be part of the world we live”

Migration is necessary for socioeconomic development and growth, she noted, adding that migration is desirable when it is well governed.

  • Missing Takoradi girls: 7 facts gathered about the discovery of the bodies

The discovery of human body parts believed to be those of the three Takoradi missing girls has dominated headlines since the news broke on Friday, August 2, 2019.

The sighting and exhumation of these bodies follow months of waiting by the girls’ families and Ghanaians in general for their safe return.

Since the news came up on Friday night, there have been a lot of varying reports and angles to the matter and makes it difficult for one to follow.

YEN.com.gh has put together a list of the facts that have been made public since the bodies were found. This should make it easier for one to understand.

    1. Players in the operation:

According to the official police statement, the operation to retrieve the human parts was undertaken by the National Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Western regional police command.

    2. Where the bodies were retrieved from:

As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh the human parts were retrieved from a septic tank at a house located at Kansawurodo, a suburb of Takoradi.

The said house was the same place was where the main suspect in the kidnapping case, Samuel Udeotuk-Wills, lived before his arrest. He is said to have led the officers to the location.

    3. How the bodies were retrieved:

Police officers were dispatched from Accra following a tip and with the help of Western regional police commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Vincent Redeemer, and others they reached the house around 5pm and cordoned off the area.

After entering the room of the suspect, sniffer dogs brought for the operation led the team to the septic tank and they began to empty the full tank at 5:30pm.

After almost three hours, the officers found skeletons suspected to be that of the missing girls which were packed into cartons and taken away from the scene.

    4. What happens to the remains:

According to the police the remains have been brought to Accra and they would undergo DNA tests at the Police Forensic Laboratory.

This will help determine which of the parts belong together and even establish whether skeletons were that of the three missing girls.

    5. Suspect’s reaction:

According to a report YEN.com.gh sighted on Graphic.com.gh, the suspect, Samuel Udeotuk-Wills, who led the team to the location was made to watch the whole retrieval process at close range.

But he denied any knowledge he still denied any involvement in the murder of the girls, the report said.

    6. Reaction of girls’ families:

YEN.com.gh gathers that just after news went around town that police officers had retrieved some bodies from the septic tank, the families headed to the location but found the absence of the team which had left for Accra.

Some are said picked cars to come to Accra. In an official reaction, the families have asked for independent forensic verification of the identities of the human parts found.

According to the spokesperson for the families, Mr Michael Hayford Acquah, “until forensic and DNA investigations establish that the body parts found to be that of theirs, all we know is that our loved ones are still alive.”

    7. The kidnappings themselves:

As widely reported, the three girls were all kidnapped around the Takoradi metropolis within a space of four months.

Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21, a third-year student of the University of Education, Winneba, was kidnapped at Kansawurodo on August 17, 2018. She was followed almost four months later by

Ruth Love Quayson, 18, a senior high school (SHS) graduate, who got abducted at Butumegyabu Junction on December 4, 2018.

A little over two weeks after the second kidnapping, Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie, 15, a student of Sekondi College (SEKCO), was also kidnapped near the Nkroful Junction in Takoradi on December 21, 2018.

  • Best Fifa Football Awards: Guardiola questions absence of Man City players in shortlist

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has questioned the absence of his players on the shortlist for the 2019 Best Fifa Men’s Player award.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are among the 10 nominated men.

City won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup last season.

“Maybe we have to win five or six or get 250 points to be considered next season,” said Guardiola.

“I don’t think there is one player who had a better season than Bernardo Silva last season, even winning [the Nations League] with Portugal.

“These awards are normally when you win the Champions League. We were in the last stages and the other competitions do not count, are not important.”

Guardiola’s side also won the 2018 Community Shield but were eliminated by Spurs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

No Manchester City player has ever won the PFA Player of the Year award, even though the team have won the Premier League in four of the past eight seasons.

In 2011-12, Arsenal’s Robin van Persie was the player of the season, two years later Liverpool’s Luis Suarez picked up the prize, with Salah and Van Dijk winning in 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

“In eight years, winning four times the Premier League is quite good,” added Guardiola. “And never one player – not David [Silva], not Vincent [Kompany], not Yaya [Toure] – won, not even suggested.

“Huge respect for Mohamed Salah, but Kevin de Bryune that season when we made 100 points [in 2017-18] was above and beyond the normal situations.

“I cannot imagine Real Madrid and Barcelona winning four titles and not one single player being there.”

Six City players were included in the 2018-19 PFA Team of the Year – goalkeeper Ederson, defender Aymeric Laporte, midfielders Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva and forwards Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

The shortlist for the Best Fifa Men’s Player was selected by a panel of former players and managers, and the result will be announced at an event in Milan on 23 September, following a public vote.

    Full men’s player shortlist

Frenkie de Jong, Netherlands (Ajax, now Barcelona)

Matthijs de Ligt, Netherlands (Ajax, now Juventus)

Eden Hazard, Belgium (Chelsea, now Real Madrid)

    Harry Kane, England (Tottenham)

    Sadio Mane, Senegal (Liverpool)

    Kylian Mbappe, France (Paris St-Germain)

    Lionel Messi, Argentina (Barcelona)

    Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal (Juventus)

  • Dayton shooting: Nine confirmed killed, shooter also dead

Nine people have been killed and at least 16 injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police have confirmed.

First reports came in at about 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) of a shooting outside a bar in the Oregon district of the city.

Police confirmed they killed the shooter at the scene. Casualties have been taken to a number of hospitals.

The incident came only hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas which left at least 20 people dead.

“We had officers in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly,” Dayton Police Department wrote in a tweet. The authorities have appealed for witnesses.

Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper told reporters that officers on patrol managed to take down the shooter.

“Our people are very well trained for a situation like this,” he said, adding it was “very fortunate that the officers were in close proximity”.

Nothing is yet known about him, but Officer Carper said they were “anxious to discover” a motivation.

    What happened in Dayton?

Footage posted on social media showed people running as dozens of gunshots echoed through the streets.

It is thought the shooting took place outside Ned Peppers Bar on E 5th Street. A note saying staff members were safe appeared on Ned Peppers Instagram page and on the nearby Hole in the Wall bar’s Facebook page.

“I got to my car, I could see cops, multiple ambulances. When I drove past I saw a lot of cops and ambulances.”

Emergency services gathered at the corner of E 5th Street and Wayne Avenue in the wake of the shooting.

  • Iran seizes another tanker in the Gulf, state media say

Iran has seized another foreign tanker in the Gulf, Iranian state media say.

State TV quoted by Reuters said the Revolutionary Guard Corps’ naval forces had “seized a foreign tanker in the Persian Gulf that was smuggling fuel for some Arab countries”.

It said the tanker was carrying 700,000l of fuel, adding that seven sailors had been detained.

The reported incident comes amid high tension after the US tightened sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.

The sanctions were reimposed after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Last month Iran seized British-flagged tanker the Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz, saying it had collided with a fishing vessel.

Also, the US has blamed Iran for two separate attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman in May and June – an allegation Tehran has denied.

  • Paul Pogba: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in ‘no doubt’ midfielder will stay at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has “no doubt” midfielder Paul Pogba will stay at the club this summer.

The France World Cup winner missed United’s final pre-season game, a penalty-shootout win over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.

But Solskjaer said Pogba, who did not travel to Cardiff for the match, was not risked due to a back strain.

“I wasn’t expecting him [to travel],” he said.

“I spoke to him after training and he didn’t feel right. It’s not an injury, it’s just some pain. I wasn’t going to risk anything.”

Reports claimed Pogba failed to make the trip to Cardiff in an attempt to force a move to Real Madrid.

Solskjaer also confirmed the £80m signing of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire is set to be announced “very soon”.

In addition to Pogba, Romelu Lukaku was also missing as United drew 2-2 at the Principality Stadium on Saturday.

Lukaku’s absence throughout pre-season has also been attributed to injury, but the Belgium striker’s future has been the subject of speculation all summer, with Inter Milan and Juventus reportedly interested.

United led through Marcus Rashford, before former Liverpool midfielder Suso and Samu Castillejo put Milan in front.

Jesse Lingard levelled up to take the game to spot-kicks.

And Welshman Daniel James scored the winning penalty in the Principality Stadium.

Lukaku continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

United start their Premier League campaign at home against Chelsea on Sunday, 11 August.

Victory for United against Milan means they have won all six of their pre-season matches, albeit with this one requiring a penalty shootout, which finished 5-4.

Daniel Maldini, the 17-year-old son of Italy and Milan legend Paolo, missed the only spot-kick.

The result means Portuguese side Benfica win the 2019 ICC competition, with United having needed to win by three goals or more to claim the trophy.

  • Is the full stop rude when used on WhatsApp?

    Sounds good.

How would you feel if you texted a friend to invite them round for dinner and this reply popped up on your phone?

Concerned? Offended? Or would you not give it a second thought?

    What about if they replied:

    sounds good

    or even

    Sounds good!

Internet linguist Gretchen McCulloch says more and more people now see ending messages with a full stop as rude because of the way we text and use instant messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

“If you’re a young person and you’re sending a message to someone, the default way to break up your thoughts is to send each thought as a new message,” she says.

“Because the minimum thing necessary to send is the message itself, anything additional you include can take on an additional interpretation.”

A 2015 study by Binghamton University involving 126 undergraduates found they perceived text messages ending in a full stop as being less sincere than the same message without a full stop.

In speech, the full stop is generally accompanied by lowering the voice to indicate the end of a sentence and carries connotations of formality or seriousness, Ms McCulloch explains.

“This can be fine if your message is already serious,” she says.

“The problem comes when you have a positive message with the seriousness of the full stop. It’s the juxtaposition of those things which creates that sense of passive aggression.”

Gretchen McCulloch has written about how the digital world is transforming the English language

So how can we tell if someone is actually annoyed or just using a full stop in the traditional sense?

Erika Darics, a lecturer in linguistics at Aston University in Birmingham, says it is all down to context.

“If you and your friends don’t normally use full stops in a WhatsApp group and then somebody does, they are probably trying to tell you something about how they feel,” says Ms Darics.

She says someone’s age and how often they use messaging apps can also affect how they use punctuation.

For example, younger people are more likely to send single-sentence messages without a full stop.

Often these differences are more significant than differences in nationality, Ms McCulloch – who is Canadian – argues. Using a full stop in messages seems to have similar connotations in both North America and the UK, she adds.

However, there can be some cultural differences between countries – Americans and Canadians don’t use “x” to denote a kiss at the end of a message, while Brits do, she says.

    Laziness or linguistic creativity?

Use of informal grammar and text slang in messaging can lead to accusations of dumbing down and making people lazy.

But Ms McCulloch points out that using slang or incorrect spellings actually takes more effort in an age of autocorrect and predictive text.

Online messaging also forces people to develop new ways of conveying emotion and meaning without the use of body language or tone of voice.

“Going back to the 1500s there have been proposals for an irony punctuation mark but none of those caught on,” says Ms McCulloch.

“But within a few short decades of being online we’ve come up with so many ways of conveying irony and other meaning.”

For example, the acronym “lol” (laugh out loud) can be used sarcastically, as can the upside-down face emoji.

“Things like emojis raise awareness of language and can help us understand subtleties in other types of communication, like politics or propaganda,” says Ms Darics.

    “It encourages linguistic creativity.”

  • West Ham United: Missing out on Europe would be a failure, says Declan Rice

West Ham United must be challenging for European football this coming season, according to midfielder Declan Rice.

The Hammers finished 10th in manager Manuel Pellegrini’s first year in charge, five points off seventh place, but their sights are higher.

They begin their new campaign by playing champions Manchester City at home on 10 August.

“We have to be aiming for Europe with the squad we have now,” Rice told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“Anything below that is a failure and most of the players would say that.

“We finished 10th, but we had so many chances to finish seventh. We have to improve our away form and our consistency.”

West Ham lost their first four games under Pellegrini before a total of 27 points from their next 15 matches put them in a position to kick on at the season’s halfway point. But they were erratic in 2019 – winning as many matches as they lost.

Pellegrini has brought in four players so far this summer including French striker Sebastien Haller, a club record £45m from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals for £24m from Villarreal.

“West Ham deserve to be a big team,” said Pellegrini. “We have so many fans and we are so popular in London.

“We are trying to improve one step more and we are all working together for that.”

From possible Championship loan to England starter

Rice, a West Ham academy graduate, established himself as a first-team regular last season and ended the year in Gareth Southgate’s England team, having changed his international allegiance after winning three caps for the Republic of Ireland.

It is a far cry from the opening day of last season, when he taken off at half-time as the Hammers were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool, and did not play again in the league until the 3-1 victory at Everton more than a month later.

“I was in a horrible place flying home,” the 20-year-old said. “We had been blitzed and I was dragged off at half-time.

“I played badly and was thinking I was not ready for the Premier League. There were a lot of Championship clubs interested in taking me out on loan.

“But the manager said I was not going anywhere and that I would play. I got my chance again at Everton. I took it and I have not looked back.

“If you had said to me then I would have played three times for England, played nearly every game, won man-of-the-match awards and club awards, I would have said no chance.

“I am really happy thinking about it, but I know I have to build on that this season.”
