  • Rouhani says Iran favours talks but US must lift sanctions

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that Tehran favours talks with Washington but the United States must first lift sanctions it imposed on the Islamic republic.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran favours talks and negotiations and, if the US really wants to talk, before anything else it should lift all sanctions,” Rouhani said in remarks aired live on state television.

Rouhani, speaking at the foreign ministry after meeting with his top diplomat, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said Iran was ready for talks regardless of whether or not the US was party to a landmark nuclear deal.

“Whether they want to come into the JCPOA or not, it?s up to them,” said Rouhani, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The Iranian foreign minister on Monday confirmed reports that he had turned down an offer from a US senator to meet President Donald Trump at the White House.

Tensions between Iran and its arch-foe the United States have soared since Trump announced last year that the US was withdrawing from the deal and began reimposing sanctions against the Islamic republic.

The nuclear deal set limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for the removal of punitive economic sanctions.

  • Pakistan braces for protests against India moves in Kashmir

Pakistan was braced for protests Tuesday, a day after India stripped the disputed Kashmir region of its special autonomy in a controversial move that Islamabad has branded as “illegal”.

Demonstrations were set to kick off in the early afternoon with protests planned in Muzaffarabad, the largest city in Pakistani-held Kashmir, alongside rallies in Lahore, Karachi, and the capital Islamabad.

Pakistani lawmakers also began a joint-session of parliament to discuss a possible response to Delhi’s move, while a separate meeting by Pakistan’s top military commanders was planned in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist party rushed through a presidential decree to scrap the special status granted to the Indian-ruled part of Kashmir from India’s constitution.

It also moved a bill proposing the Indian-administered part of the Himalayan region be divided into two regions directly ruled by New Delhi.

The move is set to exacerbate the already bloody rebellion in Kashmir and deepen the long-running animosity with nuclear rival Pakistan, which has fought two out of three wars with India over the territory.

Ahead of the announcements, tens of thousands of extra Indian troops were deployed in the territory, and a security lockdown was imposed overnight Sunday with all telecommunications there cut.

Editorials and social media in Pakistan were buzzing over Modi’s decision, with the English daily Dawn running a large headline on its front page reading: “New Delhi sheds fig leaf, robs held Kashmir of special status”.

  • Mugabe in Singapore hospital ‘since April’

Zimbabwe’s former leader Robert Mugabe has been in hospital in Singapore for four months, his successor President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.

Mr Mnangagwa said the 95-year-old “founding father of our nation” had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment and was responding well.

In a statement released on Monday, he added:

“Unlike in the past when the former president would require just about a month for this, his physicians this time around determined that he be kept under observation for much longer from April this year when he left for his latest routine check-up.”

President Mnangagwa had announced in November that Mr Mugabe was unable to walk because of ill-health and old age.

When the government announced in April that he had gone to Singapore for medical treatment, it said that he was expected back home in mid-May.

Mr Mnangagwa said he had sent a team to Singapore last week to check on the former ruler, and that “because of the good progress he is making Mugabe could be released fairly soon”.

Zimbabwe’s public health services have practically collapsed and those who can afford it seek treatment in South Africa or further abroad.

Mr Mugabe during his time in power sought almost all his medical care in Singapore.

Mr Mnangagwa, who took over in November 2017 with the backing of the military – ending Mr Mugabe’s 37-year rule, went on to be elected in disputed elections in July last year.

  • Akufo-Addo promises interchange at Nungua, dualization of Beach Road

President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced plans by the government to construct an interchange at Nungua in Accra as part of a major expansion project in the Teshie and Nungua areas which to a large extent serve residents within the Tema metropolis.

The president made the announcement at a meeting with officials and engineers of the Department of Urban Roads.

  • Founders’ Day celebration: 4 reasons why Akufo-Addo must be applauded

Ghana on August 5, 2019, marks a holiday in celebrating her founding fathers who toiled to gain independence for the country.

The founding fathers were Ebenezer Ako Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta.

Before coming to power in 2016, August 5 was not a holiday as the only one celebrated among the founding fathers was Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on September 21.

President Akufo-Addo while in power argued that there is the need for all founding father to be celebrated and not only one, thus making August 5 a holiday to celebrate them.

Some section of Ghanaians especially those who often express their allegiance to Kwame Nkrumah has criticized the president for making August 5 a day to celebrate all founders.

They had argued that President Akufo-Addo established the day since his grandfather and uncles were part of the founding father but somehow not celebrated like Kwame Nkrumah.

In the middle of the argument, YEN.com.gh brings to you four reasons why President Akufo-Addo was right about asking Ghanaians to celebrate all founding fathers and not Kwame Nkrumah alone.

    1. Kwame Nkrumah was not part of the original plan of Independence

Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah is hailed by many as playing a pivotal role in gaining independence for Ghana, then the Gold Coast.

Yes, Kwame Nkrumah played a big role but according to him all the praise is wrong because he did not do the job alone.

First of all, Kwame Nkrumah who was then schooling abroad was invited to join the team of high-level protesters gearing up for independence.

Independence for Ghana was not Nkrumah’s original idea as the UGCC party began working towards independence.

The other five members of the UGCC who were founding fathers of the party invited Kwame Nkrumah on board so it is evident that he was not part of the original plan and struggle.

    2. Kwame Nkrumah did not find or struggle for Ghana alone

Fighting for Independence is not a ‘one-man job’ that Kwame Nkrumah alone could have single-handedly carry out.

Even though Kwame Nkrumah was that charismatic personality who stood on platforms many times to address the people, the other founding fathers were also instrumental and worked hard.

Before Kwame Nkrumah came on board, the other five members of the big six had sent letters, protested and agitated for independence.

Kwame Nkrumah was said to have broken away and got extra agitated for independence but equal contributions were also done by the other members.

    3. Key roles were played by other members of the big six

The charisma and communication skill of Kwame Nkrumah made him visible to the people than other big six members.

However, the other five members and founding fathers of the UGCC played key roles in getting the agenda rolling.

The likes of William Ofori Atta, J.B Danquah among others provided financial, law and other assistance to the independence course.

The intellectual and administrative contributions of the team helped Kwame Nkrumah to coin the right message to the people.

    4. Celebrating September 21 was ripping other founders off the glory of their hard work

For some years, September 21 was celebrated as a day to commemorate Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Kwame Nkrumah was celebrated due to his pivotal contribution towards the independence of Ghana.

But history reveals that Kwame Nkrumah did not play the pivotal role alone as other members of the big six played similar key roles.

Big six was already acknowledged in Ghana so singling out Kwame Nkrumah alone for celebration is a rip-off to the other members.

The other five members also contributed immensely to the independence of Ghana and must be celebrated accordingly.

  • UAE deports Mauritian blogger

Authorities in Dubai have deported a Mauritian blogger and his 11-year-old son with no official reason given for the decision.

“The police covered my head with a hood and I was taken to prison,” said Shameem Korimbocus.

“Being detained in Al Awir Central Jail for three days gives you goosebumps. At one point in time I thought I would end like [murdered Saudi journalist] Jamal Khashoggi.”

Mr Korimbocus’ Facebook page is called The Inconvenient Truth (“La vérité ki pou dérange zot” in Mauritian Creole) and has almost 60,000 followers. His posts are often satirical and others, like the one below criticising the prevalence of drug trafficking in Mauritius, are openly critical of the government:
Mr Korimbocus, who had been living in Dubai for the past eight years, was not arrested on arrival in Mauritus.

Mauritius’ Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has since told reporters: “If he [Shameem Korimbocus] said that there is a political motive behind this situation, he should be questioned about it, and not me. Besides, he had no problem when he returned home.

“I expect him to send me correspondence to explain to me what happened to him.”

  • African Nations Championship: South Africa beaten by Lesotho

South Africa suffered a shock 3-0 loss to visiting Lesotho on Sunday to bow out of qualifying for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon.

With clubs refusing to release players as the game clashed with the opening day of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League the hosts were forced to field a young, makeshift side.

Despite fielding under-strength side South Africa were expected to overturn the 3-2 loss away in the first leg of the tie last weekend.

Instead Lesotho scored three second-half goals to compete a 6-2 aggregate win and book a date with Zimbabwe to qualify for the finals in Cameroon next year.

Kenya were another casualty after losing 4-1 on penalties in Nairobi following a second 0-0 draw with east African neighbours Tanzania in successive weekends.

Erasto Nyoni, Paulo Nyanganya, Gadiel Michael and Salim Hamis converted spot-kicks for the visitors while only Clifton Miheso was on target for Kenya.

The match attracted a 30,000 crowd to the Kasarani Stadium after Kenyan officials slashed ticket prices up to 80 percent to 100 shillings ($0.96/0.86 euros).

Togo ended an 11-year wait for a first CHAN qualifying win when they edged Benin 1-0 in Lome through a Marouf Tchakei goal on 70 minutes.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the Mozambicans raced to a three-goal half-time lead through a Luis Miquissone brace and one goal from Dayo Antonio.

But Madagascar netted twice early in the second half via Arnaud Randrianantenaina and Lalaina Nomenjanahary to book a showdown with Namibia.

Prince Dube emulated Ugandan Patrick Kaddu by scoring a second leg hat-trick, which gave Zimbabwe a 3-1 win over Mauritius in Bulawayo and a 7-1 overall success.

  • Putin urges new arms talks with US to avoid ‘chaos’

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday urged the United States to begin new arms talks after the collapse of a Cold War nuclear pact between the two world powers.

Moscow and Washington tore up the Intermediate Range Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty on Friday, triggering fears of a new arms race.

“In order to avoid chaos that has no rules, limits and laws, one needs to once again weigh all possible dangerous consequences and start serious dialogue without any ambiguities,” Putin said in a statement.

    “We are ready for it.”

Moscow has blamed Washington for unilaterally ending the 1987 treaty which was signed by US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

The agreement limited the use of conventional and nuclear missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometres (310 to 3,420 miles).

Washington and NATO accused Russia of developing the new 9M729 missile which they say violates the treaty, but Russia says its range falls short of 500 kilometres

    – ‘Risk of uncontrolled arms race’ –

Putin said Monday that if Russia receives information about US development of new missiles, it “will be forced to begin the full-scale development of similar missiles”.

Russia “will not deploy them in relevant regions until American-made missiles are deployed there,” Putin said.

Unless there are new talks about strategic security, “this scenario means restarting an uncontrolled arms race,” he added.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said at the weekend that he would like to deploy the new intermediate-range missiles in Asia, but denied that this would spark an arms race as the weapons are not nuclear.

“Right now, we don’t have plans to build nuclear-tipped INF range weapons,” he said. “So I don’t see an arms race happening.”

The INF treaty was considered a cornerstone of global arms control architecture, but Washington has long called it obsolete due to non-signatories like China being free to develop their own weapons.

Putin on Monday accused the US of “seriously complicating the situation in the world and creating fundamental risks for all” by pulling out of the treaty.

Washington launched a six-month withdrawal procedure for leaving the treaty in February, and Moscow followed soon after.

Any new treaty to counter the build-up of nuclear missiles would have to include China, US President Donald Trump said last week.

The other key arms deal between Russia and the US is the New START treaty which keeps the nuclear arsenals of both countries well below their Cold War peak.

The deal expires in 2021 and it is likely not to be renewed amid the current chill in US-Russian relations, experts say.

The US and Russia own more than 90 percent of global nuclear stockpiles, according to the Council on Foreign Relations, a US think tank.

  • Belgian cyclist Lambrecht dies after crash

Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht has died at the age of 22 following a crash during stage three of the Tour de Pologne.

Lambrecht crashed around 60 miles from the end of the race from Chorzow to Zabrze in Poland.

He was taken by helicopter to hospital where he later died on Monday.

“The biggest tragedy possible that could happen to the family, friends and team-mates of Bjorg has happened. Rest in peace,” said his team Lotto-Soudal.

Lambrecht was riding in his second season at the top level of professional cycling and had been regarded as one of Belgium’s most promising riders.

He won the under-23s’ version of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race in 2017 and finished second in the U23 World Championships last year.

German Pascal Ackermann, who was given the stage victory after the win was taken from Fabio Jakobsen for an irregular sprint heading into the finish line, said “the result of the race doesn’t matter”.

“I was devastated to hear today’s tragic news and I would like to personally send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Bjorg Lambrecht and everyone at Lotto-Soudal,” he added.

Alejandro Valverde, the 2018 world road race champion, added: “Deeply sorry for the loss of Bjorg Lambrecht, a cyclist who had demonstrated a lot in a few years.

“My deepest condolences to family, friends and team.”

  • EU officials: No basis for ‘meaningful’ UK Brexit talks

EU officials have said there is currently no basis for “meaningful discussions” with the UK over Brexit.

Diplomats from the other EU member states have been told the UK will leave without a deal unless major changes are made to Theresa May’s deal, but that these changes – such as abolishing the Irish backstop – were unacceptable.

One negotiator said: “We are back where we were three years ago.”

Downing Street said it hoped the EU would rethink its refusal of changes.

A spokesperson said the EU “needed to change its stance”, adding: “We will throw ourselves into the negotiations with the greatest energy and the spirit of friendship and we hope the EU will rethink its current refusal to make any changes to [Mrs May’s] Withdrawal Agreement.”

The plan negotiated between the EU and Mrs May was voted down by MPs three times.

New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to “do or die”, and leave the EU by the deadline of 31 October, with or without a deal.

BBC Brussels reporter Adam Fleming said the meeting between the officials and diplomats was a debrief from discussions last week between the EU, UK Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay and Mr Johnson’s European envoy, David Frost.

Mr Frost reiterated the prime minister’s stance that the backstop element of Mrs May’s plan – which aims to prevent a hard border returning between Ireland and Northern Ireland – had to be scrapped.

The backstop – agreed by Mrs May in November 2018 – would see Northern Ireland staying aligned to some rules of the EU single market.

Mr Frost said Mr Johnson’s new ministers were not bound by commitments made by the previous government.

One of the EU’s Brexit negotiators told the meeting that the G7 summit in France at the end of August could mark the point where a no-deal Brexit becomes inevitable.

But a diplomat at the meeting told Adam Fleming the comments simply reflected the speech Mr Johnson gave in the Commons the day after he became prime minister.

The meeting follows an interview with Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who said Parliament could no longer block the UK from leaving the EU without a deal.

In a no-deal scenario, the UK would immediately leave the EU with no agreement about the “divorce” process, and would exit overnight from the single market and customs union.

Opponents say a no-deal exit would damage the economy and lead to border posts between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Other politicians argue any disruption could be quickly overcome.

Mr Hancock said MPs had a chance to stop the outcome a number of times in recent weeks, but had failed to vote it through.

But prominent pro-EU Conservative Dominic Grieve said there were still a number of options available to MPs to block a no deal – including bringing down the government with a vote of no confidence, and setting up a new government in its place.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, will begin a tour of North America on Tuesday as part of a bid to “fire up” the UK’s trade relationships with countries outside the EU.

Mr Raab will be visiting Canada, the US and Mexico.

He said the foreign ministers he saw at a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Thailand last week expressed a “consistent warmth” for the UK and a “desire to work more closely with us”.

  • Sudanese protest killing of four students

Thousands of Sudanese demonstrators are gathering against the killing of four students, as protest leaders and ruling generals prepared to resume talks to resolve outstanding issues on the transition to civilian rule.

“We came here today to demand justice for the martyrs: we must not lose it because we are all responsible for it: some demonstrators were under 15 years old, they died. The wounded are now in El Obeid hospital.

“If the Sudanese do not make enough effort, this revolution will not succeed. We must all stand firm and tell the Military Council that we are still there and that this revolution will continue, even next year. The revolution will continue for our martyrs and it will not be in vain,” says Hulla Hassan, demonstrator.

“We ask the military council to cede power because it is a civil revolution: it is enough because our husbands and children died for this country, because of you, the military council: when you came to power you said that you were the heirs of the late Suwar al-Dahab (former President of Sudan between 1985 and 1986, who handed over power to civilian leaders) and we hoped you would be like him but now you have let us down.

“You have killed our children in Khartoum and everywhere, and you have destroyed the children of Suwar al-Dahab,” added Fatma Adam, demonstrator

Since December, the repression of the protest against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left more than 250 dead, including 127 demonstrators killed on June 3, according to a committee of doctors close to the protest. The authorities, on their part, gave a much lower assessment.

  • Obama urges Americans to reject leaders who stoke hatred

Former US President Barack Obama has called on Americans to reject language from any of their leaders that feeds hatred or normalises racism.

Mr Obama did not name anyone but his rare comments came after President Donald Trump sought to deflect criticism that his anti-immigrant rhetoric had fuelled violence.

In a speech on Monday, Mr Trump condemned hatred and white supremacy.

He was speaking after 31 people died in mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

While in office, Mr Obama fought unsuccessfully to restrict gun ownership. He told the BBC in 2015 that his failure to pass “common sense gun safety laws” had been the greatest frustration of his presidency.

He has refrained from commenting on Mr Trump’s controversial rhetoric regarding migrants but on Monday issued a statement.

“We should soundly reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalises racist sentiments; leaders who demonise those who don’t look like us, or suggest that other people, including immigrants, threaten our way of life, or refer to other people as sub-human, or imply that America belongs to just one certain type of people,” he said.

“It has no place in our politics and our public life. And it’s time for the overwhelming majority of Americans of goodwill, of every race and faith and political party, to say as much – clearly and unequivocally.”

During his presidential campaign Mr Trump said Mexican immigrants included drug dealers, criminals and rapists.

More recently, he caused widespread anger by suggesting that four US congresswomen of colour “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came”. He denied his comments were racist.

    What did President Trump say?

In a statement from the White House on Monday, Mr Trump called for mental health gun control reforms; the death penalty for those who commit mass murder and more bi-partisan co-operation over gun laws.

“Mental illness and hate pull the trigger, not the gun,” Mr Trump said.

He did not express support for gun control measures proposed in Congress.

“In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” Mr Trump said. “These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America.”

The president also outlined a number of policies, including more co-operation between government agencies and social media companies, changes to mental health laws as well as ending the “glorification of violence” in American culture.

He called for red flag laws that would allow law enforcement authorities to take away weapons from individuals believed to be a threat to themselves or others.

Mr Trump said government agencies must work together and identify individuals who may commit violent acts, prevent their access to firearms and also suggested involuntary confinement as a way to stop potential attackers.

He also said he directed the justice department to propose legislation to ensure those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty.

The president criticised the internet and “gruesome” video games for promoting violence in society.

“It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence,” he said. “We must stop or substantially reduce this and it has to begin immediately.”

But he did not address the criticisms of his own harsh rhetoric against illegal immigration, which opponents say has contributed to a rise in racially-motivated attacks.

Mr Trump drew criticism after he incorrectly referred to the Ohio city of Dayton – where nine people were killed in one of two mass shootings that occurred just 13 hours apart – as Toledo.

“May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo, may God protect them. May God protect all of those from Texas to Ohio,” he said before walking off stage.

President Trump will visit El Paso on Wednesday.

What happened in Texas and Ohio?

Saturday’s shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, left 22 people dead and 26 wounded.

The suspect was arrested and has been named as Patrick Crusius, a resident of the city of Allen, near Dallas. He is believed to be the author of a document posted online before the shooting which said the attack was “a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas”.

Then in the early hours of Sunday, a gunman killed his sister and eight others in Dayton, Ohio. Twenty-seven others were injured.

The suspect, 24-year-old Connor Betts, was shot dead by police. Officials have not yet suggested a motive for the attack and police said on Monday it was unclear whether he had intended to kill his sister.

  • North Korea fires two more missiles – South says

North Korea has fired two unidentified missiles, its fourth such launch in less than two weeks, South Korea’s military has said.

They were fired from South Hwanghae province across the peninsula into the sea to the east, a statement said.

The US said it was monitoring the situation and consulting with South Korea and Japan.

North Korea has expressed anger at US-South Korean military exercises that got under way on Monday.

The annual drills have been kept low key but North Korea says they violate agreements reached with President Donald Trump and South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in.

In a statement, the North’s foreign ministry accused the two allies of “playing all sorts of tricks” to justify the military exercises and said their “aggressive nature” could not be covered up.

North Korea has been the subject of a series of US and international sanctions over Pyongyang’s development of nuclear weapons and a series of missile tests.

What were the earlier launches? Last Friday the North test-fired what South Korean officials said appeared to have been a new type of short-range missile.

Those two missiles landed in the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The JCS said the missiles flew very low and travelled about 220km (140 miles). Analysts said they appeared to have been unusually fast.

On Wednesday, the North launched two missiles that flew 250km and reached a height of 30km before landing in the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea.

On 25 July, the North had fired two other missiles, one of which travelled about 690km.

That was the first launch since President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held an impromptu meeting in June at the demilitarised zone (DMZ), an area that divides the two Koreas, where they agreed to restart denuclearisation talks.

  • Trump condemns racism and white supremacy

President Donald Trump has condemned hatred and white supremacy in a public address following mass shootings that left 31 dead in Texas and Ohio.

He called for mental health gun control reforms, the death penalty for those who commit mass murder and more bi-partisan co-operation over gun laws.

“Mental illness and hate pull the trigger, not the gun,” Mr Trump said, speaking at the White House on Monday.

He did not express support for gun control measures proposed in Congress.

“In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” Mr Trump said on Monday. “These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America.”

His comments came shortly before the suspect in the El Paso, Texas, shooting was charged with capital murder. El Paso police also confirmed on Monday that two more victims died in hospital, raising the Texas death toll to 22.

    What else did Trump say?

The president outlined a number of policies, including more co-operation between government agencies and social media companies, changes to mental health laws as well as ending the “glorification of violence” in American culture.

Mr Trump drew criticism after he incorrectly referred to the Ohio city of Dayton, where nine people were killed in one of two mass shootings that occurred just 13 hours apart, as Toledo.

“May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo, may God protect them. May God protect all of those from Texas to Ohio,” he said before walking off stage.

The president had earlier tweeted that lawmakers in Congress should pass background check legislation in a package with “desperately needed immigration reform”.

He did not reference background check policies in his address.

Mr Trump went on to say he was “open and ready to discuss all ideas that will actually work” and said Republicans and Democrats should “join together in a bi-partisan fashion to address this plague”.

    Sticking to the script

On Monday morning Donald Trump tweeted that he was open to new gun-control legislation – perhaps in exchange for immigration reform.

When he spoke at the White House a few hours later, however, talk of such sweeping legislative compromise was gone. Instead there was mention of mental health, video game violence, social media monitoring and executions for mass murders.

The president alluded to “great legislation”, but the proposals he outlined were either overly vague in applicability or modest in scope.

Passing comprehensive gun-sale background checks – or any other ambitious firearm regulations – would require concerted presidential effort to sway recalcitrant Republicans. The president gave no indication of a stomach for such a fight.

And while there was talk of the evils of white supremacy and hate, the president’s critics will be disappointed to hear no acknowledgement of his own possible role in stoking the flames of racial resentment.

The president stuck to a tight script on Monday. As he did after the Charlottesville violence in 2017, he called for national healing. Mr Trump’s speech will do little to end the sharp words of his critics, however. As with Charlottesville, it seems only a matter of time before he strikes back.

    What has Congress done?

Democrats in the House of Representatives passed a bill in February that would mandate new background checks for gun transfers.

The Republican-controlled Senate has not yet taken up the legislation.

Congress has faced challenges in trying to pass gun control measures following mass shootings in recent years, with Republicans arguing Democrat-sponsored bills as unconstitutional or ineffective.

In a joint statement, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for the upper chamber to end its summer recess in order to vote on the background checks bill.

They criticised the president for not mentioning the legislation during his address, saying: “When he can’t mention guns while talking about gun violence, it shows the President remains prisoner to the gun lobby and the NRA (National Rifle Association).”

Mrs Pelosi and Mr Schumer also blamed Republican leader Mitch McConnell for refusing to take action.

Mr McConnell has not responded to the demands from Democrats.

Following Mr Trump’s address, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he will introduce a bill co-sponsored by Democrat Richard Blumenthal to create a federal grant programme to help states adopt red flag laws.

“State Red Flag laws will provide the tools for law enforcement to do something about many of these situations before it’s too late,” Mr Graham said in a statement.

Following Mr Trump’s remarks, former President Barack Obama called on the US to “reject language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred or normalises racist sentiments”.

    What happened in El Paso?

Investigators are now determining whether the mass shooting was a hate crime. Federal hate crime charges can result in the death penalty.

On Saturday, a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle on a Walmart crowded with families buying back-to-school supplies. He surrendered to police outside the store.

The mass shooting, believed to be the eighth deadliest in modern US history, took place in a city where most of the population of 680,000 is of Hispanic descent.

In addition to the 22 fatalities, 26 people were injured. The victims have not yet been named by police, but Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said six Mexican nationals were among the dead and seven others were injured.

The suspect has been named as Patrick Crusius, a resident of the city of Allen, in the Dallas area, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso.

He is believed to be the author of a document posted before the shooting which said the attack was “a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas”.

    What happened in Dayton?

A gunman killed his sister and eight others in an attack that lasted only 30 seconds at a popular nightlife district in the early hours of Sunday morning. Twenty-seven others were injured.

Officials have not yet stated a motive for the attack. Dayton police chief Richard Biehl said on Monday it was unclear whether the suspect, 24-year-old Connor Betts, intended to kill his sister.

The gunman was seen running towards a nightclub and was stopped by police gunfire as he reached the entrance.

Police said he had worn body armour and came carrying extra ammunition for his semi-automatic rifle with high-capacity magazines.

Chief Biehl said that had the gunman made it inside, “there would have been catastrophic injury and loss of life”.

Since the shooting, a number of the gunman’s former classmates have came forward to say he was expelled from high school for having a “hit list” of people he allegedly wanted to kill.

  • US officially labels China a ‘currency manipulator’

The US has officially named China as a “currency manipulator”, a statement which will intensify tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The announcement by the US Treasury follows a sharp fall in the value of the Chinese yuan against the dollar.

The drop caught markets off-guard as Beijing usually supports the currency.

Last week, China pledged to retaliate after US President Donald Trump vowed to impose 10% tariffs on $300bn (£246.7bn) of Chinese imports.

On Monday, the yuan passed the seven-per-dollar level for the first time since 2008, prompting Mr Trump to accuse China on Twitter of manipulating its currency.

The US government said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will now engage with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) “to eliminate the unfair competitive advantage created by China’s latest actions”.

The move is largely symbolic because the US is already engaged in trade discussions with China and has implemented tariffs on the country’s imports.

However, it fulfils a presidential campaign promise by Mr Trump who pledged to name China a currency manipulator on his first day in office.

The decision is likely to increase stock market jitters after sharp falls across the US and Europe on Monday. Wall Street’s main stock market indexes recorded their worst trading day for 2019.

    Analysis

By Michelle Fleury, New York Business Correspondent

The move doesn’t change much. Not legally speaking.

But it is a big deal, accentuating just how fast things have gone south between the world’s two largest economies.

When the US Treasury labels a country a currency manipulator – as it has done here with China – the next step would normally be for negotiations to begin between the two countries. In this case, trade negotiations have already been going on for more than a year.

The process also opens the path for America to introduce tariffs. Again, that’s already happening as part of Mr Trump’s ‘America First’ approach to trade.

Under the designation, Mr Mnuchin is also expected to work with the IMF to address its concerns. It’s not clear yet what that will yield.

Still it’s worth remembering that while the decision may not change much technically, it will have significant political ramifications. Nobody thinks this will increase the odds of a compromise by the Chinese side when it comes to trade.

So don’t be surprised if the prospect of a currency war further rattles investors’ already frayed nerves.

The US defines currency manipulation as when “countries manipulate the rate of exchange between their currency and the United States dollar for purposes of preventing effective balance of payments adjustment or gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade”.

No country has officially been named a currency manipulator by the US since Bill Clinton’s administration did so to China in 1994.

In its announcement, the US Treasury said: “China has a long history of facilitating an undervalued currency through protracted, large-scale intervention in the foreign exchange market.

“In recent days, China has taken concrete steps to devalue its currency, while maintaining substantial foreign exchange reserves despite active use of such tools in the past.”

  • Fulham enquire about Daniel Amartey as transfer deadline looms

Championship side Fulham are the latest club to express interest in signing Daniel Amartey from Leicester City ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The Ghana international has also been linked with Premier League outfit Sheffield United.

Amartey’s versatility as a defender and a midfielder makes him sought after.

According to reports, the Cottagers have enquired about the player’s versatility and a hopeful of a deal could be sealed this week.

Amartey joined Leicester in 2016 from Copenhagen for a fee of around £6 million and featured heavily in his first season at the King Power Stadium.

The 24-year-old suffered a leg break in October which ruled him out for the rest of last season.

He made a return this summer and has featured in pre-season friendlies but he seems not to be in the plans of manager Brendan Rodgers.

  • Winful Cobbinah expected to join Tirana after delays

Talented midfielder Winful Cobbinah will join Albanian side Tirana on Monday for pre-season training after weeks of delay.

The 27-year-old could not report early for training due to unexplained ”bureaucracies”.

Cobbinah is the only African player from last season who is returning to Tirana.

The former Hearts of Oak player is regarded an important player due to his technical qualities.

He can play on the wing and also behind the striker and that enriched Tirana’s attack.

Cobbinah scored three goals in 31 league appearances last season.

Striker Bernard Arthur has finally realized his ”childhood dream” of playing for Hearts of Oak after signing a long-term contract.

The former WAFA SC and Liberty Professionals has been outdoors after completing his move.

The 22-year-old hit a rich vein of the scoring form where he banged in 10 goals in 24 appearances.

”Growing up Dansoman football has always been my dream and Hearts of Oak has always been my heart. It’s also been my dream to wear the Phobian colours,” Arthur said during his unveiling.

”I am here to win as a team, not as an individual. I am here to help Accra Hearts of Oak.”

  • FIFA snubs Normalisation Committee statutes to disqualify top Ghana FA election candidates

FIFA has snubbed the Normalisation Committee’s craftily designed statutes to prevent members of the Kwesi Nyantakyi administration from contesting the Ghana FA elections, insisting any new regulations must be approved by the organisation’s Congress.

The world governing body also rejected the proposal to have government appoint members onto the board of the Ghana Football Association revealing that the federation must be free from any government control.

FIFA dealt a further humiliating blow to the Normalization Committee when it rejected the proposal to put Masters Degree as the academic qualification for a person to contest the Ghana FA elections.

The proposals were part of the measures put in place by the Normalisation Committee to prevent Kurt Okraku, Wilfred Osei Palmer and George Afriyie from contesting the elections scheduled for September this year.

The Normalisation Committee were supposed to have been independent by putting together reform proposals to put Ghana football back on its feet but the work of the body has been characterized by seeking to demonize and isolate associates or those who worked under the Kwesi Nyantakyi administration.

Since taking charge of the federation, the Kofi Amoah-led body has acted as if it is engaged in a fight with the Nyantakyi-led administration which has led to several attempts to ostracize members of the former GFA.

A secret body was said to be in the offing designed to ban popular candidates Okraku, Palmer and Afriyie from contesting which has drawn the anger of members of Congress.

Now FIFA says all decisions must be approved by the Congress which is the highest decision making body of the GFA and dominated by people close to the trio and key members of the football fraternity.

“FIFA has submitted its final comments to the GFA Normalisation Committee on the draft GFA statutes.” a FIFA spokesman said in a statement on Monday.

“These will now have to be submitted to the GFA Congress for adoption in line with the relevant provisions of the current GFA Statutes.”

FIFA has given the Normalisation Committee by 30th September to hand over to an elected Executive Committee and a new President.

  • GFA slapped with $ 6,170 cost to Phar Rangers for bogus ruling

The Ghana Football Association has been slapped with a $6, 170 cost to Phar Rangers after a latest ruling by the Court for Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

The Division One League side won their case against the Ghana FA after the ruling on Monday.

“The Ghana Football Association is ordered to pay an amount of CHF 6,000 to Phar Rangers as a contribution to the costs and expenses incurred by Phar Rangers in connection with these arbitration proceedings.” part of the ruling read.

Despite finishing 12th on the Zone III table at the end the 2016/17 season, Phar Rangers were relegated to the Eastern Region Division Two League with Okyeman Planners who finished 13th earning a slot to maintain their status in the DOL.

This was because Planners won a protest against relegated Okwawu United for failing to pay a fine after their week 29th clash.

But Phar Rangers argued that since Okwawu United failed to pay their fine before their week six league clash, they lose all points in their matches from week 7 to week 30.

Meaning they would also profit from three points and three goals to survive.

It took the Ghana FA Disciplinary Committee 48 days to respond to Phar Rangers’ protest with the flimsy excuse that they have no jurisdiction over the case.

Rangers exhausted all the judicial processes at the FA before heading to Switzerland for review.

  • Five clubs in hot race to sign Andre Ayew before deadline

Ghana superstar Andre Ayew is considering ‘five serious offers’ from top Europeans clubs and a high-paying Chinese before the transfer window shuts in England on Thursday, agents close to the player have told Ghanasoccernet.com.

The 29-year-old has emerged as a target for his former French club Marseille while two teams in the English Premier League as well as a side in the German Bundesliga have been hold talks to sign the Ghana captain.

Ayew is also interesting a club in the Chinese top-flight who are willing to pay him even more than what he earns with his current club Swansea City.

The want-away midfielder is keen on leaving English Championship side in the chase of first team football after his loan contract with Fenerbahce expired at the end of last season.

While Fenerbahce were keen on taking him permanently his huge wage demands has made it impossible for the Turks to exercise their first option of signing him.

The son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele must return to the south Wales side after spending last season on loan with the Turkish giants but he is desperate to leave the club because of he wants to play top-flight football.

Swansea are also willing to let him leave permanently to free up their wage bill with the transfer deadline looming.

According to his agents ‘two English clubs are interested in Andre’ but will face long negotiations because of Ayew’s tough wage demands as he is unwilling to reduce the amount he earns at Swans.

But the unnamed Chinese are keen to sign Ayew as Swansea are expected to consider the offer in the coming hours.

Ayew rejoined the Liberty Stadium outfit in January 2018 in a bid to help them beat the Premier League drop but they were relegation and have since struggled to pay his wages in the second tier.

He was subsequently loaned out to Fenerbahce where he scored five goals in 35 appearances last term.

  • NPP’s Western Regional Treasurer to contest Ellembelle Constituency seat

Western Regional Treasurer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Madam Anna Akaisi Horma Miezah has filed nomination forms to contest the Ellembelle Parliamentary seat.

The NPP parliamentary primaries is slated for 28th September 2019 and vetting of the Aspirants is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 12, 2019 at the Party’s Headquarters in Sekondi-Takoradi, Western Regional capital.

Madam Miezah would contest the seat with three others, Ellembelle District Executive Officer (DCE), Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh, Joseph Apor Adjei (Business mogul) and Isaac Menlah (A Miner).

She also would be the first female candidate to lead the NPP in Ellembelle, when she wins

The current DCE for the area, Kwasi Bonzoh has been running unopposed on the ticket of the party since 2012 but this time around, he is facing tight competition.

Political pundits and various surveys conducted put the Regional Treasurer (Madam Anna Akaisi Horma Miezah) ahead of the DCE and the rest.

Her nomination forms were received by the Party’s Elections Committee Secretary, Mr. Isaac Kpolley and promised her of a fair and transparent election.

The occasion, which could be described as a rally, was characterized by a procession of over 400 delegates, NPP faithful and sympathizers from the Constituency who accompanied her to submit the forms through the principal streets of Esiama, Akpandue, Awiebo, Basake and Aiyinasi amidst brass band music and dance.

Addressing the delegates and supporters at the party Office at Aiyinasi over the weekend, Madam Anna Akaisi Horma Miezah thanked them for their unflinching support given to her to file her nomination forms to contest as their Parliamentary candidate.

She disclosed that her main aim of contesting was to oust the NDC lawmaker, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah in 2020 adding that they could only achieve this unless the party is united.

“We have only one main aim and our aim is to beat Armah Kofi-Buah in 2020 and whether he likes it or not we are removing him and before we can remove him then we need unity, NPP we need unity to beat Armah Buah”, she emphasized.

She opined that her main headache, was the disunity and division in Ellembelle NPP adding that unity was very paramount.

“My major concern is disunity and division in the party but if there is a vacancy, many people have the right to compete and we are all competing for this primaries and one will win”, she said.

The Regional Treasurer noted that the party was going to snatch the Ellembelle seat from the NDC and said the party shouldn’t think about a particular candidate but think about the victory.

“This year, we are going to take the Ellembelle parliamentary seat and not a candidate, we are not taking a candidate, what we need is the seat not a particular candidate so in this primaries we must vote wisely, we shouldn’t vote because this particular person is my sister or brother, we are going to vote for someone who can uproot Armah Buah like a cassava so I will plead with you, let us bring unity into the party”, she stressed.

She continued that “…if we end the primaries, let us be united, I will beg you and let us work hard because the people that we are supposed to battle with are the NDC and not among ourselves”.

She took advantage of the atmosphere to plead with the delegates and supporters not to insult, engage in acrimony, mudslinging and other irresponsible behaviours that could mar the process and affect the party’s chances of winning the Ellembelle seat for the first time, adding that without unity the NPP would find it difficult to wrestle the seat from the NDC.

She said politics was not about insults but sharing divergent views and urged them to be tolerant.

“It is very painful to see our youth engaging in politics of insults, politics is not about insults, it is about sharing divergent views and it doesn’t mean if you disagree with someone you have to insult the person, let us stop insulting ourselves because if we finish this primaries, we will need everybody on board to wrestle this seat from the NDC”, she stated.

Armah Kofi-Buah must be uprooted like cassava in 2020

The gender activist and philanthropist, capitalized on the opportunity provided to state that the Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah has failed the good people of Ellembelle and for that matter they were going to uproot him like cassava in 2020.

She also opined that Ghanaians gave the NDC eight-year mandate but they couldn’t develop the country adding that the time had come for Ghanaians to also give the NPP 8 years mandate to develop the country.

According to her, she doesn’t understand why Armah Kofi-Buah is having the courage to talk about the deplorable nature of the Nkroful road in the Constituency which Armah Buah and his NDC failed to fix.

“We gave the NDC good eight years and they couldn’t do anything. Today Armah Buah is having the courage to talk about the deplorable Nkroful road, we gave him eight years and he couldn’t do it. He was the Deputy Energy Minister and Energy Minister, what did he do on the Nkroful road, he was only interested in spending money wrongly”, she chided.

She is worried that “Armah Buah has being an MP for Ellembelle for good 10 years now and still darkness has taken over the Constituency. See darkness on our major Highway, Aiyinasi which is his hometown, see no light on the road side. Whether Armah Buah likes it or not, in 2020 he will go, we are uprooting him like cassava”.

Madam Akaisi Horma Miezah, seized the hour of excitement momentarily to hail President Akufo-Addo for implementing the Free SHS policy and therefore charged the gathering to encourage their young ones to take advantage of the policy.

She disclosed that the Akufo-Addo-led Government has good programmes for Ellembelle Constituency and urged them to rally behind the Government.

She, therefore, pledged to liaise with the NPP National Chairman who is a son of Ellembelle Constituency, Freddie Blay to help push for more developmental projects for the area.

She also promised that the Akufo-Addo-led Government was going to reconstruct the Esiama-Nkroful-Aiyinasi road currently in deplorable shape.

  • ‘Share your rich experience with Ghana’ – Regional Minister appeals to senior citizens

Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah has appealed to pensioners and senior citizens to actively participate in national development.

He said they should share the cumulative experience gathered over the years with Ghanaians to improve governance and development in the country.

He described senior citizens as the rock of the nation following various contributions they made in line of duty towards national development.

“In fact, our Senior Citizens can be characterised as the rock upon which sustainable development ought to be constructed for the benefit of present and future generations of the Country”, he said.

Addressing hundreds of senior citizens gathered at Sekondi over the weekend to celebrate this year’s Founders’ Day, the Minister said government will continue to count on the senior citizens to share their rich experience with the nation.

“It is also a fact that the value and experiences of the aged cannot be quantified in monetary terms and must therefore not be allowed to go waste”, he noted.

According to Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, government continues to recognize the role played by its Senior Citizens and of the fact that a Country which neglects its elderly people stands the risk of not having a data bank of experiences to fall on in times of need.

“Permit me therefore to express my profound gratitude to you for the dedicated and persevering services you rendered to this Country. You are still our valuable human resource. We will continue to tap into your knowledge and experiences as long as your physical strength will permit for the benefit of our region and the Country at large”, he emphasized.

He said government through various interventions such as Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, which enrols thousands of aged persons who are 65 years and above for quarterly stipends, and free NHIS cards for those aged 70 years and older continue to improve the welfare of pensioners.

He concluded that “To complement Government efforts, family members should regard the welfare of their aged as an obligation and their responsibility. Family members should not in any way neglect their aged, but should rather ensure adequate leisure times are given them in order to reduce boredom, loneliness and depression”.

  • Jirapa municipality hit by shortage of doctors

An acute shortage of doctors has hit the Jirapa municipality of the Upper West Region.

The Municipality, with a population of over 120,000 is currently depending on only two doctors because the other four are on study leave.

The Jirapa Municipal Director of Health, Florence Ansongwmine speaking at a media encounter said the situation is negatively impacting healthcare delivery in the area.

“Patients have to wait longer at the OPD for two doctors to attend to them. They are overwhelmed with the cases that come. It has resulted in some doing self-medication so we are appealing that we get more doctors and more specialists.”

“There are young doctors and they are overwhelmed. They work 24 hours, seven days a week. If we overuse them, they will break down. It may even scare them, they will decide to go to other places.”

The shortage of doctors is a challenge faced by most hospitals in the country.

In 2017, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region suspended new emergency admissions following an acute shortage of doctors at the facility.

This was captured in an internal memo issued by the directorate of surgery to the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital and sighted by citinewsroom.com

The memo stated that management of the facility arrived at the decision following an emergency meeting convened to review the impact of the shortage on their delivery.

  • Police investigates vehicle used to whisk away murder suspect

A V8 vehicle purported to belong to the National Security is under investigations by the Police in Kibi in the Eastern Region for whisking away a murder suspect from Police custody.

The unknown occupants of the Vehicle (Number Withheld) alleged to be operatives of National Security reportedly pulled the suspect Richard Owusu Afriyie into their waiting vehicle and drove off amidst warning shots.

Police pursued the vehicle having sent a wireless message about the incident upon which armed Police Officers laid ambush on the Suhum road but the “operatives” managed to abscond with the suspect.

But the suspect was arrested a year later when he returned to Kibi having gone into hiding.

This was revealed by Dickson Donkor, Assistant State Attorney during his argument against bail application filed by the accused under the Justice for All Program held in Koforidua Prisons on Friday.

The Prosecutor said, pictures of the said vehicle were taken and being tracked but the challenge he said has been the fact that the vehicle registration number seems to have been changed but said nonetheless trial is scheduled to commence.

Justice Clement Honyenugah thus refused bail the application for the suspect.

Richard Owusu Afriyie, 35, was first arrested by Kibi Police on April 30, 2017, after assaulting his tenant to death over electricity bill but was reportedly aided to escape by alleged operatives of National Security but was rearrested when he sneaked into Kibi to visit family and has since been remanded into Prison custody without trial.

  • More people convicted for human trafficking offences – Report

Ten people were sentenced to prison for human trafficking offences in 2018, statistics from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection reveal.

The convicts are currently serving between five and seven years jail terms. In addition, 14 people were fined for child exploitation and related offences, Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection indicated.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra to commemorate the 2019 World Day Against Human Trafficking, Mrs Prempeh said 91 cases of human trafficking and child exploitation were recorded last year.

The day which falls on July 30, every year was set aside by the United Nations in 2010, during the adoption of the Global Plan for Action to combat Trafficking in Persons (TIPs).

Being celebrated annually to create awareness and intensify advocacy on dangers of human trafficking, the day urges governments worldwide to adopt coordinated and consistent measures to combat human trafficking.

Mrs Prempeh explained her ministry was doing everything possible to ensure that cases of human trafficking and child labour and exploitation in the country were brought to the barest minimum.

The Ministry has developed the Human Trafficking National Plan of Action (NPA 2017-2021), a comprehensive document to support the effective implementation of the Human Trafficking Act 2005, Act 694.

It covers all the thematic areas prevention, protection, prosecution and partnership.

More so, Mrs Prempeh said her ministry had trained law enforcement officials, social workers and civil society actors and media to educate and support victims of human trafficking.

To improve prevention, the Ministry has printed more information, education and communication materials to raise and intensify public awareness.

Mrs Prempeh said the country successfully established adult shelter to rescue female victims of human trafficking.

The shelter was operationalised in February this year and so far about 35 inmates went through rehabilitation by receiving medical screening, counselling, training, housing, feeding and others.

Mr Premepeh said shelter for children would soon be operationalised, while her ministry partnered with private shelters to care for victims of human trafficking in the country.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday gave the assurance that the next NDC government will continue with the sea defence project to cover the Ada to Ningo Prampram coastline.

Speaking at a church service to climax the 82nd Ada Asafotufiami Festival, former President Mahama said the first phase of the sea defence project, which was completed during his administration was helping to curb the fast rate of erosion of the beachfront.

“When I form my government in 2021, I want to assure you, Nene Akuaku, that we will reinforce the current sea defence works, and continue with the second phase. This will include; the Kablevu area, Lolonya, Goi, Anyamam, Akplabanya, Wokumagber to Ningo Prampram”, President Mahama announced in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

Present at the church service were; Nene Abrem Kabu Akuaku III, Paramount Chief of Ada and President of the Ada Traditional Council, Chiefs and Queen Mothers of the Ada Traditional Area, the Local Council of Churches and citizens of Ada.

He challenged the chiefs and people to move to the next stage of developing a sustainable, local economic blueprint, that would harness the opportunities of the Ada area, which include; tourism, vegetable and fruit farming.

“You have one of the most resourced traditional areas of this country, and I urge you to move to the next step. Apart from the tourism and hospitality business opportunities, this area has also proven to be a fruit and vegetable basket”, he advised.

  • Mpohor illegal miners arrest a sham

Illegal miners recently arrested in the Mpohor District was a sham, a cover-up for the DCE Ignatius Asaah Mensah, and NPP party leaders in the district, the Wassa Youth Forum has alleged.

The group said stopping illegal mining has become a herculean task due to the continuous involvement of some political and traditional leaders in the Mpohor district.

” It is not a surprise how many people closer to political and traditional leaders will work against the menace. Galamsey is still happening in the Mpohor district”, the Forum lamented.

The Forum questioned how leaders who are actually involved in this illegal activity can show commitment to ending it, causing environmental degradation and loss of lives.

The group observed that the “Operation Vanguard” team are normally called upon to act whenever local Npp leaders want a cover to showcase that they are indeed working hard to stop the menace.

“We are aware of how this cover-up is done to conceal their unpardonable involvement in this treacherous work of illegality “, the Wassa Forum explained and called on the government to allow the courts to punish the culprits.

“The recent arrest by the operation vanguard taskforce in Mpohor district on 30th July 2019, is not different from previous operations that ended up in a fiasco, and the illegal miners returned to duty “.

The Forum said illegal miners continue to make the claim that the Mpohor DCE has registered them for a fee of 30gh each and that the BNI must let the people know about the outcome of investigations “.

The Wassa Forum also stated that when the authorities in the Mpohor District Assembly(MDA) were questioned, the explanation given was that, the NPP constituency executives needed money to run the party and that explains why 30gh was collected from each illegal miner, an act which in itself was illegal.

” The NPP constituency secretariat had explained that nothing of that sort happened and that nobody can use the great NPP for his or her selfish gains. But we respectfully call on the national security to treat this issue with the urgency it deserves and investigate”, the Forum pleaded.

“Some galamseyers have accused the DCE and some NPP leaders in the district for extortion, and it is important all these matters are investigated to punish those sabotaging government’s efforts, the group stated.

“The river Buture which serves both Mpohor and Ahanta West constituencies is gradually losing its relevance for domestic water usage as pollution goes on unchecked”, the Forum added.

As a matter of urgency, the government needs to act to save
innocent people whose lives are being sacrificed every day to satisfy selfish interests”, the Forum concluded.

The African Caucus was established in 1963, as the “African Group,” with the objective of strengthening the voice of African Governors in the BWIs- the IMF and the World Bank Group- on development issues of particular interest to Africa.

Membership to the Caucus is opened to all African Countries, who are members of the IMF and WBG, currently, all the 54 countries on the African continent are members.

  • Efficiency, innovation will propel high performance – IoD

Mr. Rockson K. Dogbegah, President of the Institute of Directors Ghana, has said sustainable high performance in corporate environments require a combination of efficiency and innovation to achieve positive results.

He said both were crucial elements of corporate governance, which must not be overlooked.

Mr. Dogbegah, who was delivering a lecture on “Performance Management” in Ho, as part of a series of training in corporate governance, said high performance was a journey and not an outcome.

He said performance was dependent on a baseline of expectations anchored on past performance, taking into accounts the current context of sustainable, corrective and unacceptable zones and urged teams to calibrate their performance on the baseline.

Mr. Dogbegah said team failure could be due to unclear shared goals, lack of clarity in roles and responsibility, rigidity to contrary evidence, insufficient inclusion in decision-making, no change in leadership and team processes as well as lack of maintenance and open communication.

He said performance was critically dependent on the leader and the team with the leader establishing clearer structures for managing the team.

Mr. Dogbegah said structural team performances hinged on goal setting, value attachment, assigning roles, going by rules of the game, processes and interpersonal communication.

He continued that building trust by acknowledging issues and engaging others and turning respect of values into opportunities was very important.

Mr. Dogbegah also underscored the importance of accountability in good corporate governance and performance management, saying, every little thing counts.

“Accountability feels like an attack when you are not ready to acknowledge how your behavior harms or not,” he added.

  • Government shuts down GMCL as state records over $200m loses

The Ministry of Lands and Resources has indefinitely closed down the Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL) citing huge loses to the state for the period of 2010 2017.

The decision, according to the sector Minister, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, follows the apparent lack of transparency in the operations of some mining companies in Ghana which has been a source of “serious concern” to the Ministry.

Hence the Ministry decided on an audit of the company to ascertain the causes of the loses.

Findings from the audit were based on Fair Pricing Model utilizing best business practices, open source data as well as information obtained from verifiable business intelligence centers.

Results indicated that an additional revenue residing offshore from 2010 to 2017 with no transfer pricing audit performed prior to 2017 recorded loses of a whopping $259m.

Further, loss of dividends within the period amounted to $6.1m while additional corporate tax due was $79m.

Aside the findings of the audit report, Cheremeh added that in late 2014 and 2015, just before the sales agreement reached between Manganese Trading Limited (MTL) as the sole off-taker of the total volume of the manganese produced by GMCL, there was a manipulation of the sales in order to stockpile ore prior to adjusting the price downwards by $0.65 for every DMTU.

Calculated loss due to this price per production manipulation was conservatively estimated to be $3.6m.

The Audit has also noted major infrastructural deficiencies as a result of GMCL operations. Primarily road and rail infrastructures are stretched beyond capacity and are close to complete failure

The Minister disclosed that Ghanaian contractors providing services to GMCL are owned hundreds of millions of Ghana Cedis even though the company continuous to expand its export of manganese.

“Current figures available to the ministry suggest production and export in excess of 3 million metric tonnes.” He told the media.

“These and several other infractions leave me no option as the sector minister than to close down the operations of GMCL until further notice. The company is therefore instructed to a stop all mining, exploration, and export of minerals effective August 6, 2019.”

The ministry together with the Minerals Commission and other relevant stakeholders will immediately commence discussions with Ghana Manganese to resolve these and all other outstanding issues in the course of the shutdown.

  • Shafiu rejoins Ashgold for Africa

Ashantigold’s top marksman, Shafiu Mumuni, has rejoined his teammates just in time for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg match against Akonangui of Equatorial Guinea in Ebebiyin on Saturday, August 10.
The young enterprising striker returned home from South Africa last Friday after a two-week trial with Supersport United.

The arrival of the Ashantigold skipper arrived in Obuasi last Saturday to boost the morale in camp exactly a week to the start of their continental campaign.

The presence of Ashgold’s talisman would be welcome news to Brazilian coach, Ricardo Da Rocha, who took over the reins of the Miners barely two weeks ago in the absence of Mumuni.

The player is expected to resume training under the new trainer on Monday, to help build a striking partnership with the new-recruited Brazilian striker, Marco Silva.

Shafiu, who has endeared himself as the Miners’ top scorer in the past five seasons, was on target nine times for his club in the two Normalisation Committee Special Competitions.

Meanwhile, the well-drilled Ashgold side has been beefed up with nine new players, including Karela United winger, Osei Baffour, versatile KojoAmoako from Eleven Wonders and Atta Kusi, formerly of Asante Kotoko.

Ashgold are scheduled to leave for Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday.

The return leg will be played at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium in two weeks time.

  • Detained Nigeria Shia leader to be freed

A Nigerian court has allowed the leader of a banned pro-Iranian Shia Muslim group to seek medical leave in India after more than three years in custody.

Supporters of Ibrahim Zakzaky have been protesting on the streets of the capital, Abuja, for months calling for his release.

Sheikh Zakzaky, 66, has been charged with culpable homicide and other offences, all of which he denies.

His supporters say he has suffered two minor strokes and is losing his sight.

The court also ordered a delegation to accompany Sheikh Zakzaky to India to ensure he returns for trial after getting treatment.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), which was founded four decades ago by Sheikh Zakzaky, welcomed the court’s decision as “a victory for truth and justice against tyranny and impunity”.

It accused the Nigerian authorities of inflicting “brutal wounds” on Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife Malama Zeenat Ibrahim, who have been in police custody since 2015.

The group was banned in July after months of protests which saw violent clashes between protesters and the security forces – including one outside the federal parliament building. Several people have been killed in the protests, including a senior police officer and a journalist.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said the group had been “taken over by extremists who didn’t believe in peaceful protests and instead employed violence”.

Human rights groups have condemned the police’s violent response to the protests.

Sheikh Zakzaky was among hundreds of people arrested in 2015 after security forces stormed the group’s headquarters and killed about 350 people.

The army said at the time that it was protecting its chief of staff and his convoy who it says were attacked by IMN supporters.

  • Article 370:India strips disputed Kashmir of special status

India’s government has revoked part of the constitution that gives Indian-administered Kashmir special status, in an unprecedented move likely to spark unrest.

Article 370 is sensitive because it is what guarantees significant autonomy for the Muslim-majority state.

There has been a long-running insurgency on the Indian side.

Nuclear powers India and Pakistan have fought two wars and a limited conflict over Kashmir since 1947.

Pakistan has condemned India’s decision to revoke the special status of its part of Kashmir as illegal, saying it would “exercise all possible options” to counter it.

“India is playing a dangerous game which will have serious consequences for regional peace and stability,” said Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Why are there tensions over Kashmir?
During the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, some expected Jammu and Kashmir, like other Muslim-majority regions, to go to Pakistan.

But the ruler of the princely state, who had initially wanted Jammu and Kashmir to become independent, joined India in return for help against an invasion of tribesmen from Pakistan.

War broke out between India and Pakistan, and Kashmir effectively became partitioned.

The region, which remains one of the most militarised zones in the world, has been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan for more than six decades.

    What is Article 370?
In 1949, a special provision was added to India’s constitution providing autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.

Article 370 allows the state to have its own constitution, a separate flag and independence over all matters except foreign affairs, defence and communications.

Another provision later added under Article 370 – 35A – provides special privileges to permanent residents, including state government jobs and the exclusive right to own property in the state.

It is seen as protecting the state’s distinct demographic character as the only Muslim-majority state in India.

So why is India’s move controversial?
The move by the Hindu nationalist BJP government prompted outrage in parliament, and some legal experts have called it an attack on the constitution.

Critics fear the move is designed to change the demographic makeup of India-administered Kashmir – by giving people from the rest of the country to right to acquire property and settle there permanently.

The state’s former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, told the BBC she felt there was a “sinister design” to the decision.

“They just want to occupy our land and want to make this Muslim-majority state like any other state and reduce us to a minority and disempower us totally.”

She added Article 370 was not given to the people of the state as a “gift”, but “a matter of constitutional guarantees given by the very same Indian parliament to the people of Jammu and Kashmir”.

Why is the government doing this?
The ruling BJP made revoking Article 370 part of the party’s 2019 election manifesto – and it won a landslide victory earlier this year.

It has argued that Article 370 has prevented the region’s development and its integration with India.

BJP politician and former finance minister Arun Jaitley wrote on Twitter that Monday’s move would lead to “more jobs and more revenue” for people in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Separate status led to separatism… a historical wrong has been undone today,” he said.

How did the government make the change?
India’s government announced a presidential order revoking all of Article 370 apart from one clause which says that the state is an integral part of India. It also proposed to divide the state into two regions.

The order was met by massive protests from the opposition – but has now been signed into law by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Changing Article 370 also requires the assent of the state government, but Jammu and Kashmir has been under the rule of a governor since June 2018 when the BJP pulled out of a state government coalition with the regional People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

This effectively means the state has been ruled directly by Delhi through a governor, who has agreed to the bills.

  • Nuon Chea: Cambodian former Khmer Rouge deputy leader dies

Nuon Chea, a key leader in Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge who was convicted of genocide last year, has died at the age of 93.

Known as Brother Number Two, Nuon Chea was second only to the regime’s leader Pol Pot during Khmer Rouge rule over Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.

Up to two million people are thought to have died during the Khmer Rouge’s four years in power.

In 2018, a UN-backed court sentenced Nuon Chea to life in prison.

A spokesman for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) confirmed that the 93-year-old had died in hospital. The cause of death was not announced.

After seizing control of Cambodia in 1975, the Maoist Khmer Rouge attempted to force the country back to the Middle Ages.

Millions died from starvation, disease, overwork and execution – almost a quarter of the population. Nuon Chea was one of the ideological architects of this Year Zero policy.

After Vietnam invaded and deposed the regime in 1979, Nuon Chea fled to the hills with supporters until he was pardoned by the state in 1998 under the terms of a peace deal.

But under international pressure, Cambodia arrested the former leaders in 2007. Nuon Chea and former head of state Kieu Samphan were later convicted on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Another of the regime’s leaders, Kaing Guek Eav – known as Comrade Duch – was also given a life sentence by the UN-backed court in 2012.

  • Iran ‘seizes Iraqi tanker in Gulf for smuggling fuel’

Iran has seized another foreign tanker in the Gulf, state media reports claim.

Iranian forces seized the Iraqi ship for “smuggling fuel for some Arab countries” and detained seven sailors, according to the reports.

Iraq’s oil ministry has said it has no connection to the seized vessel and that it is working to gather information about it.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions after the US tightened sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.

The sanctions were reimposed after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

If confirmed, the Iraqi tanker would be the third foreign vessel to have been seized by Iran in recent weeks.

On 13 July, the Iranian coastguard detained the Panama-flagged MT Riah. The Revolutionary Guards’ Sepah News site said at the time that the ship was seized during naval patrols aimed at “discovering and confronting organised smuggling”.

Also last month, Iran seized the British-flagged tanker the Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz, saying it had collided with a fishing vessel.

What do we know about the latest seizure?
Fars news agency reported that the operation to seize the ship was carried out last Wednesday near the Gulf island of Farsi.

The vessel was carrying about 700,000 litres (154,000 gallons) of fuel at the time, according to a Revolutionary Guard Corps commander quoted in state media.

The tanker was reported to have been taken to Bushehr Port in south-western Iran and its fuel handed over to the authorities.

Iranian reports say the tanker was Iraqi but the nationalities of the seven crew have not been disclosed.

In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency, Iraq’s oil ministry said it had no connection with the ship.

“The ministry does not export diesel to the international market,” it said, adding that authorities were seeking more information about who the vessel belonged to.

Two Iraqi port officials told Reuters news agency that initial information suggested that the “small ship” belonged to a private shipping company owned by an Iraqi trader.

BBC Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher says that though the cargo is relatively small, the seizure will inevitably raise tensions further in the region.

    What’s the background to this?
Tensions have been high in the Gulf since the US tightened oil sanctions against Iran.

The US has blamed Iran for two separate attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman in May and June – an allegation Tehran has denied.

Iran also shot down a US surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz in disputed circumstances.

UK warships have meanwhile been shadowing British oil tankers in the area since Iran threatened to seize one in response to the impounding of an Iranian tanker off Gibraltar.

They were, however, unable to prevent the seizure of the Stena Impero.

The UK said the tanker impounded off Gibraltar was suspected of breaching EU sanctions against Syria. Iran denied it was heading there.

  • Assisted dying: Australian cancer patient first to use new law

An Australian woman with terminal cancer has become the first person to end their life under new assisted dying laws, a charity says.

Kerry Robertson, 61, died at a nursing home in the state of Victoria in July.

She was granted permission to use the controversial legislation – which exists only in Victoria but is being considered in other states – after a 26-day approval process.

Her family said she was able to have “the empowered death that she wanted”.

Ms Robertson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and it later spread to her bones, lungs, brain and liver.

She decided to stop chemotherapy and radiation treatment in March after the side effects and pain became “intolerable”, her family said.

Victoria’s legislation, which came into effect in June, allows terminally ill patients who meet certain requirements the right to access lethal drugs.

“We were beside her, David Bowie playing in the background, surrounded by love, with final words spoken, simple and dignified,” said her daughter, Nicole Robertson, in a statement released by charity Go Gentle Australia.

“To me that is the greatest part: the knowledge that we did everything we could to make her happy in life and comfortable in death.”

    Who is eligible?
The state’s law has 68 safeguards and is designed for people who are in severe pain.

It requires the person to make three requests to end their life to specially trained doctors. The person must be aged at least 18 and have less than six months to live.

The bill was passed in 2017 after more than 100 hours of parliamentary debate that deeply divided state lawmakers.

Ms Robertson’s family said she had applied to utilise the legislation on the day it came into effect in June.

Western Australia and Queensland are considering similar laws.

In 1995, Australia’s Northern Territory introduced the world’s first voluntary euthanasia law, but it was overturned by federal authorities in Canberra eight months later. The federal government does not have the same power over states.

Laws allowing terminally ill patients to legally end their lives with a doctor’s supervision have been passed in countries including Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium.

  • Heathrow strike action suspended on Monday – BA reinstates flights

A strike planned by Heathrow Airport workers on Monday has been called off, as talks continue to stop a further walkout on Tuesday.

Some 2,500 workers had planned to strike on both days in a row over pay.

Britain’s busiest airport cancelled 177 flights – roughly one in seven departures – after the Unite union rejected a pay offer.

But British Airways said it will now reinstate flights from Heathrow on Monday.

Air Canada said it is planning to operate its full flight schedule on Monday. Aer Lingus confirmed that it will reinstate flights, as will Etihad Airways.

The company added: “Industrial action planned for Tuesday 6 August is still in force but Etihad is committed to operating all services until a final decision is made by unions.”

Virgin Atlantic has not cancelled flights, but will continue with its plan to move them from Heathrow to Gatwick.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic said: “These services will not revert back to the original London Heathrow schedule and will remain in place.”

    What should passengers do?
A Heathrow spokesman advised passengers to check with their airlines to see if there were any changes to cancelled fights.

He said: “We regret that passengers have been inconvenienced by this and urge them to contact their airline for up to date information on the status of their service.”

After being informed by Heathrow that the strike had been suspended, TAP Air Portugal said on its website that it “expects normal operations and the restrictions previously communicated are no longer applicable”.

Flybe, Swiss, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways and were among those to have confirmed cancellations, but it is not yet known if they will now reinstate flights.

Before the suspension of Monday’s strike action, airlines had begun to contact affected passengers, after some complained they had been left in the dark about whether their flights were affected.

Heathrow warned that security queues at the airport would be longer than normal, with passengers advised to arrive at least three hours before long-haul departures and two hours before short-haul.

Airlines also said they would impose restrictions on hand luggage to speed up boarding.

Paul Icklow from London, who is meant to fly to Spain with his family on Tuesday, told the BBC earlier that British Airways had been unable to give any information on Sunday morning, leaving him “frustrated”.

Meanwhile, Sarah McFadyen from Eastbourne said her flight to Abu Dhabi had initially been cancelled, then Etihad told her it “might still go”.

“So I have to turn up at Heathrow four hours before my flight to find out if it’s going… I am confused, frustrated.”

Heathrow says passengers will be able to rebook their flights for a different day, although choices may be limited given that August is peak holiday season.

    How did we get here?
Around 4,000 Unite members voted on the airport’s revised pay deal on Friday, with 88% opting to strike.

Heathrow said the offer was worth 7.3% over two-and-a-half years.

Unite regional co-ordinating officer Wayne King said: “This latest vote for strike action points to growing anger among the airport’s workers in a whole range of vital jobs which are essential to the smooth and safe running of Heathrow.

“Airport bosses need to heed this latest strike vote and the overwhelming rejection by our members of the revised pay offer which offers little over and above the original offer of £3.75 extra a day for many workers.”

Meanwhile, talks aimed at averting a separate strike by British Airways pilots are to continue next week.

Leaders of the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) met the company last week to try to resolve the dispute over pay.

The union would have to give two weeks’ notice of any industrial action.

  • Cloudflare ends services for ‘lawless’ 8chan after El Paso massacre

Digital security and infrastructure firm Cloudflare said Sunday it was terminating its services to 8chan, the message board where the El Paso gunman reportedly posted a racist “manifesto” shortly before killing 20 people.

In a blog post announcing the move, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince described the no-censorship site as “a cesspool of hate.”

“8chan is among the more than 19 million Internet properties that use Cloudflare’s service. We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time,” Prince wrote.

“The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.”

Other right-wing extremists, misogynists and conspiracy theorists have posted to 8chan, which does not moderate content.

Cloudflare’s move terminating its cybersecurity and other services means 8chan could be exposed to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, in which hackers take down a site by flooding it with fake traffic.

Prince said the network services provider had not taken the decision lightly.

“We reluctantly tolerate content that we find reprehensible, but we draw the line at platforms that have demonstrated they directly inspire tragic events and are lawless by design,” he wrote.

    “8chan has crossed that line.”

Shortly before the El Paso mass shooting on Saturday, the suspect named by the media as Patrick Crusius, who is white, was believed to have posted a racist “manifesto” on 8chan that includes passages railing against the “Hispanic invasion” of Texas.

Despite Cloudflare’s move, Prince said terminating services to sites like 8chan would not make the internet safer or reduce online hate.

Two years ago, after a far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in which a woman was killed, Cloudflare stopped providing services to neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer.

“Today, the Daily Stormer is still available and still disgusting. They have bragged that they have more readers than ever. They are no longer Cloudflare’s problem, but they remain the Internet’s problem,” Prince wrote.

“Unfortunately the action we take today won’t fix hate online. It will almost certainly not even remove 8chan from the Internet. But it is the right thing to do. Hate online is a real issue.”
