  • Farmers in Asante-Akim South receive 150,000 cocoa seedlings

The Asante-Akim South Municipal Assembly has distributed 150,000 hybrid cocoa seedlings to farmers in its bid to increase yield and improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers in the Municipality.

The exercise, which formed part of the implementation of the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme in the Municipality, was supervised by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Alexander Frimpong.

About 400 farmers, who benefitted also received 30,000 tree seedlings to plant alongside the cocoa seedlings to protect their farms and also mitigate the impact of climate change.

Each farmer, according to Mr Frimpong, would plant eight trees per acre of cocoa farm and the expectation was that more trees would be planted as more farmers benefit from the programme.

It is a collaborative arrangement between the Assembly, the Forestry Commission (FC), the Department of Agriculture, COCOBOD and Kuapa Kokoo Limited.

Six strategically located sites at Dampong, Atwedie, Odubi, Komeso, Tokwai-Odumase and Obogu, had been designated as nursery sites for both the cocoa and tree seedlings.

The MCE said the Assembly decided to partner other stakeholders this year to impact not only the lives of the farmers, but also the environment.

He said the FC released 65 of its afforestation workers to support the tree seedling nursery, which was integrated into the exercise for environmental protection.

He underlined the need for the farmers to nurture the trees just as the cocoa, saying that, they would not only protect their investments but stood the chance to reap economic benefits in the near future.

The MCE recounted how the impact of climate change had destroyed many buildings through rainstorms in the Municipality over the years and charged the farmers and other citizens to cultivate the habit of planting trees.

He said the PERD programme was introduced by government to make farming more lucrative and urged the farmers, especially the youth, to embrace it to improve their lives.

He announced that about 300,000 cocoa seedlings would be nursed next year and urged farmers who had not benefitted yet to exercise patience. The chiefs of the various communities praised government for the laudable intervention and urged the assembly to increase the seedlings for more farmers to benefit.

  • Our jobs are under threat – Coalition of Textile Workers cry out

The Coalition of Textile Workers Ghana has for the umpteenth time raise concerns over the job security of its members following what it describes as the escalation of illegal activities in textiles trading in the country.”

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Trade and Industry, the Coalition said it had observed with utter disappointment “the unbridled dumping of Pirated fabrics in the Ghanaian markets, thus rendering its local products noncompetitive and unmarketable, thereby threatening workers employment”.

According to the leadership of the Coalition, government has in the last couple of months introduced measures aimed at addressing the challenges facing the sector industry, however, the implementation of the measures has not been as rapid as they would have liked.

It would be recalled that in February this year, His Excellency the President in the State of the Nation Address in Parliament stressed on the need for the Textiles Industry in Ghana to be revived and therefore confirmed specific policy being implemented to deal with the situation.

In that State of the Nation Address, the President said “Mr Speaker, our local textile industry has been struggling for years, and many textile companies have, indeed, gone under. We have decided to give it a major stimulus to help put it on a strong footing. The local textile industry has, therefore, been granted a zero-rated VAT on the supply of locally-made textiles for a period of three years. We have put in place a tax stamp regime for both locally manufactured and imported textiles to address the challenge of pirated designs and logos in the textile trade. The Tema Port has been designated as a Single-Entry Corridor for the importation of textile prints, with a textile task-force in place to ensure effective compliance, and reduce, if not eliminate, smuggling of imported textiles. A new textile import management system has been instituted, also, to control imports of textiles”.

While commending the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for his efforts to resuscitate the textile industry, the Coalition said it had noticed a “piecemeal and partial implementation of the measures without the critical and indispensable functions of The Anti-Textiles Piracy Task Force”.

The leadership of the coalition, says in order to ease the agitations within the rank and file of employees over their job insecurity, it is proposing for an emergency meeting with the sector minister by Tuesday 30th July to address the concerns of its members.

  • President out-doors Community Mining project in the Western Region

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday officially opened the Community Mining initiative instituted by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining (IMCM) as alternative to the destructive illegal mining activities.

The Akufo Addo led government, a year and half ago, made a strong case against illegal mining looking at its devastating effects on lands, water bodies and forest in general and therefore placed a ban on the practice to enable the government to find better and lasting solution to its effect.

The community concept, born few months ago, is therefore a replacement and a relief to the many youth who hitherto became redundant due to the ban on illegal small scale mining.

President Nana Akufo Addo pointed out that Ghana from ages past had been known for its mineral prowess and it was not during his regime that he would end the practice,

“It was not for nothing that the Portuguese gave the name Elmina to a part of the country…our fathers have traded in the mines for years and it is not during my time that I will stop mining…but I will not also sit down and witness the wanton destruction of illegal mining on our environment and the future generation…we need responsible mining,” the President said.

He said he was grateful to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining for a great work done to bring hope back to the many youth and people who engaged in the trade through responsible mining.

“I am told about 15,000 people are going to benefits from this new arrangement and such a laudable scheme will be replicated in all mining communities across the country”.

The mining enclave created for the artisanal miners would have health inspectors, alcohol testing machines, processors to ensure that their activities conformed to best practices.

The President, therefore, urged the miners to abide by all regulations concerning their new trade in order not to come into conflict with the law.

Professor Frimpong Boateng said 85 districts were going to benefits from the Community Mining Initiative, adding that procedures for getting accreditation or license to operate within the sector had been shortened.

Mr Kobby Okyere Darko, the Western Region Minister, said the reforms was necessary to ensure that indigenous participation in the sector was done within the confines of the law.

  • Confusion rocks NLA over attempts to scuttle formation of Union

Signals reaching our editorial desk indicates that all is not well at the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) as workers vow to form its much awaited Union despite obvious attempts by management to stampede the process.

According to sources, Management is employing all unorthodox means to frustrate the intervention by the National Labour Commission where representatives of NLA and Financial Business and Services Employees Union (FBSEU) have locked horns in a bid to ensure that workers right to join a Union are not violated with reckless impunity.

It will be recalled that when recent media reports suggested that the Osei-Ameyaw led management was uncomfortable with the formation of the Union, a supposed Rejoinder from the Public Relation Unit of the NLA rubbished the reports, claiming the workers rather prefer a docile Welfare Association.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has on several occasions directed the two parties to meet and sign regulations (Standing Negotiating Committee Constitution) governing formation of the Unions on several occasions but the NLA continues to be evasive despite several reminders and efforts made by the UNION.

According to our investigations, officials at the NLA are still putting impediments in the way of the workers but the workers who are determined to fight for their rights on the 30th of May 2019, held their General Assembly Meeting of the Welfare Association and unanimously resolved to be members of the Local Union of the Authority.

The staff of the NLA who have opted to join the Union are being represented by the Financial Business and Services Employees Union (FBSEU) at the Labour Commission after the Union acquired the Collective Bargaining Certificate from Labour Department in 2016.

Portions of a letter by the National Labour Commission to the two parties dated April 25th 2019, at the last hearing read, “The Commission directs that, the parties should go and comply with the Collective Bargaining Certificate by forming the Standing Negotiating Committee to discuss the rules and regulation of the Committee in accordance with Section 101 of the Labour Law 2003 (ACT 651).

“The Commission further directs that, they engage within one month and anything arising out of the Collective Bargaining Certificate they should contact the Chief Labour Officer for clarification”.

In a rather bizarre development, this paper has cited a letter (another diversionary ploy by the NLA) directing an NPP law firm ZOE; AKYEA law firm led by the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon Atta Akyea and member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency as the consulting firm to act as the entity to deal with the Union on all matters relating to the issue of Industrial Relations.

“Speaking to the Deputy General Secretary of the Union on the latest development, Mr. Albert Yamoah intimated that the right of workers to join or form a Union is without prior authorization from any employer, the Union will adopt all legitimate and proper means to avoid any industrial unrest at the NLA, Records available to this paper clearly establish that the NLA has on several occasions failed to appear for the N.L.C. for hearing on the following dates: 25th July 2018, 6th September 2018, 24th October 2018 and 28th October 2018 even the FBSEU has always been available for hearing.

As Ghana marks World Hepatitis Day today, the government has been implored to let the disease be covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.

According to Dr Adwoa Agyei-Nkansah, a Physician Specialist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the treatment of Hepatitis is highly expensive and cannot be left solely to the patient.

Viral Hepatitis B and C are leading infectious killer diseases affecting 325 million people worldwide, causing about 1.4 million deaths a year.

Hepatitis B and C are the second major killer infectious diseases after tuberculosis, and 9 times more infectious than HIV.

She said: “At least, it should be on the health insurance” because it costs about GHS1,000 to investigate and identify the strain.

Dr Agyei-Nkansah, who was speaking in an interview with Class 91.3FM after the launch of the National Guidelines for prevention, care and treatment of viral Hepatitis in Accra, said : “We should invest in Hepatitis B because it is a preventable disease and it is causing lots of problems, especially liver cancer in people in their productive age group”.

  • Nissan to cut 12,500 jobs worldwide

Japanese car giant Nissan has announced 12,500 job cuts as it attempts to shore up its finances after recent troubles.

It will reduce its production capacity and the number of models it produces by 10% by the end of 2022, but it did not say where the cuts will fall.

The firm also announced a 94.5% fall in net income for the first quarter of 2019.

This is one of the one of the carmaker’s worst quarterly performances in a decade.

Nissan continues to struggle in the US, a key market, where it has been heavily discounting to keep up with sales by rivals.

The carmaker is reining in its operations after years of expansion under former chairman Carlos Ghosn, who was ousted last year after being accused of financial crimes.

In a news conference, Nissan boss Hiroto Saikawa said the job cuts would account for a “big portion” of the savings it was trying to make.

He did not specify which models would be targeted for production cuts, but said they would be likely to affect “compact cars and its Datsun range”.

Mr Saikawa said 6,400 job cuts had already been made in the 2018 and 2019 financial years at eight locations.

He declined to identify the six locations at which the firm plans to make another 6,100 cuts between the 2020 and 2022 financial years.

It will reduce its product line-up by 10% by the end of 2022.

  • Google now drives with a ‘Nigerian accent’

Drivers in Nigeria now have the option of hearing route advice in a Nigerian accent when they use Google Maps.

The technology giant unveiled new features on Wednesday with the local accents also available on Google Assistant. It is the first move by the company to offer such a service in Africa as it seeks to attract more users on the continent.

Up to now, Nigerians have had to deal with travel advice from Google in an American accent, that struggled with pronouncing local names such as Lagos’ Alfred Rewane road – which came out as Alfred Re-wain. It also couldn’t cope with the suburb Oworonshoki.

Earlier, when it was tested by some Nigerians, they were surprised to hear an “accent that sounded like them”, according to social media comments.

Google said in the coming months, the maps feature will also allow users in Lagos to seek directions on what it calls “informal transit” – such as the yellow minibuses, known as danfo, that ply virtually every road in the comercial capital, but about which it is difficult for outsiders, or even Lagosians travelling to a new neighbourhood, to find information.

  • Ugandan pop star Bobi Wine to run against Yoweri Museveni

Ugandan pop star and opposition MP Bobi Wine has officially announced that he will run for president in the 2021 election.

The 37-year-old will challenge President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 33 years.

The singer calls himself the “ghetto president”, and is a fierce critic of Mr Museveni.

He was charged with treason last year over the alleged stoning of the presidential convoy.

He denied the charges and was freed on bail.

“On behalf of the people of Uganda I am challenging you [Mr Museveni] to a free and fair election in 2021,” Bobi Wine said at an event in the capital, Kampala, to announce his candidacy.

“I know the danger I am going to face to challenge Museveni but I have been encouraged by Ugandans that I am the leader they want,” he later told AFP news agency.

The musician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been an MP for two years. He portrays himself as a champion of the poor, and sings about social justice and democracy.

Uganda’s parliament approved changes to the constitution last year to scrap the age limit of 75 for presidential candidates.

The move opened the way for the ruling party to nominate Mr Museveni, 74, to run for a sixth term.

His supporters say he needs to remain in office to guarantee stability, and to promote economic development.

Bobi Wine comes to this political fight with a potent mix of celebrity and youth appeal. Young people make up more than 75% of Uganda’s population, and Bobi Wine has emerged not only as their leader but as a symbol of youth movements in other parts of Africa.

But the self-declared “ghetto president” has some tough questions to answer. He has not yet put forward a clear plan on how to deal with the serious problems many Ugandans face, including unemployment, poor healthcare and education.

He was also mocked for misinterpreting a question on fiscal policy in a television interview. He responded by releasing a single, Simple Fiscal, which is about making the lives of Ugandans better.

He argues he is a leader and there are plenty of skilled Ugandans who can handle technical issues.

Mr Museveni has dismissed his opponent as a club singer, but about 18 months before the election the president is already on a tour of the country, handing out cheques to different interest groups as part of what he calls Operation Wealth Creation.

President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed there are behind-the-scene efforts to find the three missing Takoradi girls.

Speaking Wednesday as part of a tour of the Western Region, the president said he was confident that the girls will be found.

“All efforts are being made to bring back the girls,” he said.

The girls, Ruth Quayson, Priscilla Blessing Bentum and Priscilla Koranchie are believed to have been kidnapped between August 2018 and January 2019.

The main suspect in the kidnapping, Samuel Udoetuk-Wills is currently before the Takoradi Magistrate Court after he escaped from jail in December 2018 following his first arrest.

“The fact that not much information has been out in the public domain does not imply that the state or security agencies are not working hard to ensure their safe return to their families,” the Akufo-Addo stated.

President Akufo-Addo has also directed police in the Western Region to bring to book, all perpetrators involved in the attack and abduction of the Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, Nana Akwasi Agyemang.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “I have told the police that all those who carried out the attack, whether they are 10 persons or 100, must be rounded up and put before court for the law to take its rightful course. The law must also deal with those who aided in the conduct of the crime.”

  • Liverpool striker Divock Origi says ‘gut feeling’ told him to stay

Divock Origi says “a gut feeling” told him to stay at Liverpool and the striker is ready to kick on from the Champions League-winning goals which changed his life.

The 24-year-old did not start a Premier League game last season before December and could have left Anfield in January.

But now – fresh from goals against Barcelona and Tottenham which helped Liverpool to their sixth European Cup – he has signed a new long-term deal.

He is set to start the season up front.

First-choice attackers Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have all missed Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the US after long summers with their nations.

Mane is not due back at the club until after the Community Shield on 4 August.

“It is a lot to happen in a year,” Origi said. “And that’s the beauty of football.

“Winning the Champions League is a boy’s dream so it changes a lot in a player’s career. I finished last season very well and again in training I feel well. It is on me to show it on the pitch.”

Origi spent the 2017-18 season on loan at Wolfsburg and was linked with moves to Huddersfield and Wolves during the first half of last season.

He scored a winner against rivals Everton on his first league appearance, and followed up with another late goal at Newcastle as Liverpool finished a point behind champions Manchester City. The Belgian, who scored in Sunday’s friendly defeat by Sevilla, says it was a gamble to stay at Anfield but one he feels has paid off.

“I just sat down and I felt like I wanted to stay and help this team,” he said.

“I felt good, I just had to keep performing in training and I knew my chance would come. I felt like we could do something special.

“I just had to block everything out on the outside and focus on the right things. In football you never know 100%, it could have gone another way as well but that’s the choice I made.”

Origi scored in Liverpool’s final game of a three-match trip to the US, in a 2-2 draw with Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday evening in New York.

  • North Korea fires ‘new short-range missile’ into sea, S Korea says

North Korea has fired two short-range missiles into the sea, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

They were launched over the sea early on Thursday, from Wonsan on North Korea’s east coast.

A JCS official said at least one of the missiles travelled about 690km (428 miles) and appeared to be a new design.

It marks the first time North Korea has fired any missiles since leader Kim Jong-un’s impromptu meeting with Donald Trump late last month.

It also comes after anger from the North over planned military exercises between South Korea and the US, an annual event. The North warned they could affect the resumption of denuclearisation talks.

The first missile was launched at about 05:34 Thursday local time (20:34 GMT Wednesday) and the second at 05:57, said the JCS.

Initial reports said both missiles travelled about 430km, reaching an altitude of 50km, before falling into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

But after analysis from US and South Korean intelligence officials, the JCS said at least one was likely to have been a “new type of missile”.

Japan’s defence minister said the launches did not reach Japanese waters and had no immediate impact on its national security.

It is not clear if North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw Thursday’s launch.

South Korea’s defence ministry has urged Pyongyang to stop acts that it said were unhelpful for easing tension, reported Reuters.
    ‘North Korea is clearly upset’

After an invitation on Twitter in June, US President Donald Trump and his counterpart Mr Kim had an impromptu meeting at the demilitarised zone that divides the two Koreas, where they agreed to restart denuclearisation talks.

Following that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said working-level talks would likely start in July, but there have been no further public meetings between US and North Korean officials.

But North Korea has condemned the planned US-South Korea military drills next month, calling it a “violation of the spirit” of the joint statement signed by Mr Trump and Mr Kim at their first face-to-face talks in Singapore last year.

Though the US and South Korea have refused to cancel the military exercises, they have been scaled back significantly.

“North Korea is clearly upset that the US and South Korea are conducting joint military exercises,” Harry Kazianis of Washington’s Center for the National Interest told news agency Reuters.

  • Boeing warns it may stop 737 Max production

Boeing is warning that it might have to halt production of the 737 Max if grounding continues much longer.

The company reported its largest-ever quarterly loss of $3.4bn (£2.7bn) on Wednesday due to the troubled plane.

If hurdles with regulators worldwide continue, Boeing said it would consider reducing or shutting down production of the 737 Max entirely.

However, Boeing boss Dennis Muilenburg is confident the plane will be back in the air by October.

“As our efforts to support the 737 Max’s safe return to service continue, we will continue to assess our production plans,” Mr Muilenburg told investors in a conference call.

“Should our estimate of the anticipated return to service change, we might need to consider possible further rate reductions or other options, including a temporary shutdown of the Max production.”

Boeing’s entire fleet of flagship 737 Max planes was grounded in March after issues with the model were linked to an Ethiopian Airlines flight crash that killed 157 people.

Five months earlier, 189 people were killed when a Boeing 737 Max operated by Lion Air crashed.

    Awaiting approval

As investigations into the two crashes continue, Boeing has been working on fixes for its Mcas anti-stall flight control software, as well as other issues identified by regulators, including the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Boeing, which has customers in 150 countries, is still waiting for approval from regulators.

Mr Muilenberg said the planemaker had been holding weekly technical calls with operators of the 737 Max, while the modified software had so far been tested in 225 flight simulator sessions.

“These are challenging times, first and foremost, for the families and loved ones who are affected by these recent events, and also for our dedicated people, who work tirelessly to deliver on our mission to connect, protect, explore and inspire the world, all with a relentless focus on quality and safety and doing so with the utmost integrity,” he stressed.

“This is a defining moment for Boeing and we’re committed to coming through this challenging time better and stronger as a company.”
    Spiralling costs

After the two crashes, production of the 737 Max was reduced from 52 to 42 aircraft per month, Mr Muilenburg said.

The knock-on effect of this move is that Boeing has to pay more for plane parts than before, which are priced according to the volume purchased by the planemaker.

Having to suspend deliveries of new 737 Max planes to airlines has also hit Boeing’s cash flow and profit margins.

Further reducing production of the plane would compound these problems, which could lead Boeing to halt production of the 737 Max completely – a move the company has not taken since it halted production of the 747 for 20 days in 1997, when demand outstripped supply of parts.

The grounding of the 737 Max and the cuts in production have both affected Boeing’s customers and are likely to continue to cause plane delivery delays in the future, Mr Muilenberg acknowledged.

“I want to personally thank everyone who continues to be our partner in this journey; from our airline customers and their pilots, flight attendants and others who have been impacted by these groundings, representatives from all levels of government who share our commitment to safety for the flying public and everyone in the aviation community impacted by these events,” he said.

“We are grateful for your support and we will continue striving to earn and re-earn your trust.”

  • Europe heatwave expected to peak and break records again

Much of Western Europe is expected to face record-breaking temperatures again, with its second heatwave in a month set to reach its peak.

A red alert has been issued in Northern France – with temperatures of 41C forecast in Paris.

The UK is expecting 39C heat and trains have been ordered to run more slowly to stop rail tracks buckling in the heat.

Belgian, German and Dutch temperature records could be broken for the second time in two days.

“Climate change has increased the likelihood and severity of heatwave episodes across Europe,” the UK’s national weather service said.

On Wednesday, a Eurostar train from Belgium to London broke down, trapping passengers, while French reports suggested five deaths might have been linked to the heatwave.

Authorities launched a red alert – the highest state of alert – in the Paris region and 19 other French departments, calling for “absolute vigilance”, and comparisons were drawn to a heatwave in August 2003, which contributed to almost 15,000 deaths.

Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands had already recorded their highest-ever temperatures on Wednesday – of 39.9C, 40.5C and 39.3C respectively.

But forecasters believe the mercury could soar even higher on Thursday, and the Netherlands could see a new record of 40C in the south-east.

France set an all-time high-temperature record of 46C, according to the WMO, and new June highs were set in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Andorra, Luxembourg, Poland and Germany.

    Is climate change to blame?

While extreme weather events like heatwaves occur naturally, “research shows that with climate change they are likely to become more common, perhaps occurring as regularly as every other year”, the UK’s Met Office says.

It conducted a study last year that found that the UK was now 30 times more likely to experience heatwaves compared to the year 1750, because of “the higher concentration of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere”.

Records going back to the late 19th Century show that the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has increased by about one degree since industrialisation.

A climatology institute in Potsdam, Germany, says Europe’s five hottest summers since 1500 have all been in the 21st Century.

Scientists are concerned that rapid warming linked to use of fossil fuels has serious implications for the stability of the planet’s climate.

  • French inventor attempts flyboard Channel crossing

A French inventor is attempting to cross the English Channel on a jet-powered flyboard.

Franky Zapata, a former jet-ski champion, is hoping to cross from northern France to southern England in just 20 minutes.

The 40-year-old took off from near Calais and will refuel halfway across the Channel by landing on a vessel.

He is aiming to keep an average speed of 87mph (140 km/h) while travelling 15-20 metres (50-65ft) above the water.

The challenge is taking place today because it marks exactly 110 years since Louis Blériot made the first plane flight across the Channel in 1909.

Mr Zapata set off from the beach at Sangatte, which is near Calais, at around 9:00 local time (7:00 GMT) on Thursday. The exact timing was dependant on the weather conditions and shipping traffic.

If successful, he plans to land the flyboard in Dover, which is around 22 miles (35km) away.

“We created a new way of flying. We don’t use wings. You are like a bird, it is your body that is flying. It is a boyhood dream,” he told reporters ahead of the flight.

But he warned that the wind “could make the crossing more complex”.

Mr Zapata received widespread attention following the annual Bastille Day parade in Paris earlier this month, when he took part in a military display on his futuristic flyboard.

The invention, which is about the size of a skateboard, is powered by five small jet engines and fuelled by kerosene which is kept in the rider’s backpack.

  • Judge blocks new Trump asylum rule

A U.S. judge in San Francisco on Wednesday stopped the Trump administration from enforcing a new rule that would bar almost all asylum applications at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Judge Jon Tigar in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction blocking the rule, enacted on July 16, that would require asylum-seekers to first pursue safe haven in a third country through which they had traveled on their way to the United States.

A different U.S. judge had allowed the new rule to go forward earlier on Wednesday in a separate lawsuit in Washington.

The ruling by Tigar, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, renders inconsequential the decision by the Washington-based judge, Timothy Kelly, appointed by President Donald Trump.

The rule will now be suspended pending further proceedings.

  • HBO exec responds to ‘Game of Thrones’ blowback

The final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” was a ratings juggernaut that helped the network receive a record-setting number of Emmy nominations. It was also poorly reviewed by viewers and critics, particularly with regards to the series finale.

Still, HBO doesn’t seem to be discouraged by the reaction. “There are very few downsides to having a hugely popular show and one I can think of is that many people have big opinions on how it should end and how they should see any characters’ stories come through,” HBO head of programming Casey Bloys told journalists during a press conference at the network’s Television Critics Association summer press day on Wednesday. He said that, despite online petitions suggesting so, HBO has no plans to re-shoot the finale and, frankly he “can’t imagine any other network would” either. Bloys also denied that network executives had meddled with the series through copious notes to creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. “When a show is sixth, seventh season of a highly successful run by that point, there’s usually a rhythm with the showrunners and network … so there’s no more back and forth,” Bloys said. In response to whether the criticism has changed how HBO will approach its planned prequel to the medieval-style fantasy series, Bloys said, “It has not at all.” Shooting recently wrapped on the first episode of that project, which is created by Jane Goldman.

  • What does Boris Johnson think of Africa?

As the Conservative Party leader Boris Johnson steps over the threshold of 10 Downing Street later on Wednesday, no doubt it’ll be Brexit that will be uppermost on his mind. But what is he thinking about this continent?

There may be some clues in what he has written about Africa.

In a 2002 blog following a visit to Uganda he wrote that the “problem [in Africa] is not that we were once in charge, but that we are not in charge any more”.

He said that colonialism ended slavery and brought cash crops, whereas aid efforts bring political correctness.

In the same year, he wrote in the Daily Telegraph that the Commonwealth supplied the Queen with “regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies”.

In 2016, he wrote in the Sun newspaper that then-President Barack Obama had an “ancestral dislike of the British Empire” because he is “part-Kenyan”.

Mr Johnson is never shy of the colourful phrase but when he gets into office, he’ll be focused on the practicalities of a post-Brexit Britain, and that will include doing trade deals with African countries.

When it comes to African heads of state, some already welcomed his election as leader of the Conservative Party on Tuesday.

  • US restricts entry of ‘anti-democratic Nigerians’

The United States has imposed visa restrictions on those Nigerians it says are “responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process”. In a statement, the State Department says the measures will also apply to those who have organised election-related violence.

It is unclear what criteria the US has used to determine who will be affected by the visa restrictions.

The names of those impacted by this announcement have not been made public but the US government stressed that the sanctions were specific to certain individuals, and “not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly elected government”.

“These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights,” the statement says.

This is not the first time the US has raised concerns.

During a visit to Nigeria ahead of the 2015 elections, then-Secretary of State John Kerry, promised anyone involved in political violence in Nigeria would be denied a US visa. But the government failed to follow through on its threat.

A former adviser to the State Department told the BBC that the decision to impose visa restrictions this time around, may be a sign of the declining relationship between the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the US diplomatic mission in Nigeria.

  • Trump was not exonerated by my report – Robert Mueller tells Congress

US President Donald Trump’s claim that he was “totally exonerated” by special counsel Robert Mueller was rejected by Mr Mueller in a hearing on Wednesday.

Mr Mueller said he had not exonerated Mr Trump of obstruction of justice.

However Mr Trump criticised Mr Mueller’s performance and said: “This was a great day for me.”

Mr Mueller spent two years probing alleged collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia, but did not establish collusion in a crime.

However he concluded that Russia interfered in the election on Mr Trump’s behalf.

n all, 35 people and three companies were charged by the special counsel on matters relating both directly and indirectly to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. No members of the Trump family were charged.

Mr Mueller – a former FBI director – and his team concluded that they were unable to charge the president with a crime, but could not exonerate him either.

    What did Mr Mueller say?

Across two Congressional hearings, Mr Mueller repeatedly declined to stray outside of confines of his 448-page report, generally giving clipped answers or referring committee members back to the text of his findings.

He appeared at times to struggle with the proceedings, amid convoluted and detailed questioning from House committee members about various parts of his team’s 448-page report.

The questions focused largely on Mr Mueller’s investigation of President Trump and his decision to say he could not exonerate the president of obstruction of justice, but Mr Mueller repeatedly stressed the importance of concerns over ongoing Russian interference in US democracy.

“Over the course of my career I have seen a number of challenges to our democracy. The Russian government’s effort to interfere in our election is among the most serious,” he said.

He added: “Much more needs to be done in order to protect against this intrusion, by the Russians but others as well.”

    What reaction has there been?

Mr Trump called it a “great day for the Republican party” while the White House called Mr Mueller’s testimony an “epic embarrassment for the Democrats”.

Meanwhile House Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi shied away from advocating for Mr Trump’s impeachment after Mr Mueller’s testimony.

However Democrats said they would go to court to to enforce a subpoena of former White House counsel Don McGahn and seek access to grand jury material in the Mueller report.

  • Asante-Apeatus sack could affect morale of police officers Analyst

Security Analyst and CEO of Security Warehouse Limited, Adams Bonaa is curious about the dismissal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) saying it could send a negative signal to Ghanaian cops.

Mr. David Asante-Apeatu was sacked on Monday by President Akufo-Addo albeit he had some time to finish his contract.

His deputy, James Oppong-Boanuh was directed by the president to act as IGP.

Several theories are being propagated about what could have angered the President to ask Mr. Asante-Appeatu, who is due for retirement in 24 days, to vacate post with immediate effect.

While some suspect he may have refused to carry out unprofessional directives on behalf of the ruling party, others are linking this to the voluntary retirement of his Executive Secretary, Superintendent Peter Lanchene Tuubo, who now wants become a member of Parliament on the ticket of the opposition NDC in the Wa West Constituency.

But Adams Bonah says he is convinced the development is sending a bad signal to the entire Police Service and could seriously affect morale.

Speaking on the matter on the second day of his tour of the Western Region, the President assured the people of the area that the state and the security agencies are working vigorously to find the girls and reunite them with their families.

The girls are Ruthlove Quayson, Priscilla Blessing Bentum and Priscilla Koranchie.

Their families, friends and citizens of the region have held several demonstrations in connection with the failure of the state to trace and rescue the girls.

  • MPs criticize abuse of privileges

Members of Parliament (MPs) yesterday did introspection of their conduct in public and how they would lead exemplary lives and abide by the laws of the country, as any member of the society, in order to bring the needed respect to the institution of Parliament.

MPs from both sides of the House were of the view that Parliament as an institution is the pillar or fulcrum of democracy in the country, and that MPs ought to conduct themselves in a manner that would bring enormous respect not only to the institution, but also to themselves.

These views were expressed by the MPs after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Bantama, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, raised concerns in a statement on the floor of the House on how some MPs, government officials and members of the judiciary have been violating the laws of the country.

“Mr. Speaker, while I believe in a democracy, parliamentary immunities, the supremacy of the law, I also believe that Members of Parliament should not be seen abusing our privileges or institutions that enforce the law,” he said

Mr. Okyem Aboagye, therefore, commended the officers of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), who in collaboration with some journalists from Citi TV, arrested and shamed an MP and other high-profile members of the society for flouting traffic regulations on the Tema Motorway.

He asked the law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the laws that are made by Parliament and that whoever is found culpable must be made to face the full rigours of the law.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, explained that Parliament is a very important institution as far as democracy is concerned since parliament is the foundation of any democracy, therefore, it ought to be afforded all the respect and recognition.

He, however, stated that the conducts of MPs are critical to the dignity of the institution, adding that the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, had always admonished MPs to be conscious of their conduct in public and particularly respect traffic regulations when driving.

Mr. Osei-Owusu stressed the need for MPs to respect the laws of the country in order to set good examples for the rest of the members of the society.

  • Western Regional House of Chiefs condemns attack on Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove

Acting President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III has condemned in no uncertain terms the brutality and violence meted out at the Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX last Monday dawn.

Awulae Amihere Kpanyili III who is also the overlord of Eastern Nzema Traditional Area cried that the act was barbaric and disrespect for the rule of law, customs and traditions of the Ghanaian community.

In a rather sadden tone as he addressed the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, at the commissioning of the New Gas Complex for the Ghana National Gas Company Limited in A.B Bokazo on Tuesday, July 23, prayed that such act must never be entertained nor allowed in our society.

“What happened in Dixcove is not something any of us thought could have happened. We pray that there would be peace… Whoever that would do anything to retaliate, would never come to think of it. That, we would uphold the law, that our difference would be settled within the law. But fights and attacking each other is not the way to go” he cried.

“This is a wicked act. It is a wicked act. Nobody dares touch a Ghanaian, let alone using cutlass and try to harm anybody” he lambasted.

It is alleged that the assailants on Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX were from Upper Dixcove, who sought to punish him for breaching a restrictive order by the court, by installing a new chief in Tourome, a rural community “traditionally” under the Upper Dixcove Paramountcy. The two paramouncies; Upper and Lower Dixcove Traditional Areas have been in dispute over ownership of the Tourume village for more than a decade.

A presser has also been released by the office of the Acting President Awulae Amihere Kpanyili III, to appeal to the government to set up a committee to investigate and bring to some finality a resolution to the feuding paramountcies.

He also urged the police to expedite investigations and fish out the perpetrators of such a heinous crime.

  • Police caution drivers against car snatching by criminals

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public, particularly commercial drivers on new methods of car snatching by criminals.

This caution was as a result of the increasing reports of car snatching from unsuspecting drivers by criminal gangs in the country.

A statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency by the service and signed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ms Juliana Obeng of the Public Affairs Unit of the CID has stated.

It said “Statistics at the CID suggests an increase in the reportage of the above-mentioned crime. The fraudsters will hire a taxi driver to a distant and lonely place and in the process execute their intended purpose”.

The statement added that the act begins by a passenger boarding the car. The passenger after boarding the car then befriend the driver, through which he/she offers the driver something to drink, mainly energy drink. The driver out of ignorance consumes the drink and becomes drowsy.
That it is through this state of drowsiness that the criminal pushes the driver out of the car and bolts away with it.

The CID is, therefore, cautioning all drivers to desist from accepting consumable items from passengers in order not to fall, victim.

The Police are calling on anyone who had fallen victim to such crimes and has not yet reported to do so.

  • Lifetime plans follow-up to ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ and Jeffrey Epstein documentary

Lifetime is following the explosive success of “Surviving R. Kelly” by ordering a follow-up piece about more of the embattled musician’s accusers, as well as planning a new documentary that looks at those who say they were victims of another powerful man: Jeffrey Epstein.

“Surviving R. Kelly: The Aftermath” will be a four-hour documentary special that will include interviews with those who claim to be new survivors as well as psychologists and experts on the case. The R&B singer has been indicted on 18 counts — 13 in Illinois and five in New York — that include sexual exploitation of a child.

Kelly, 52, has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual misconduct that have been levied against him for years. The six-part documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” aired in January and has since been seen by over 26.8 million people and received a 2019 Emmy nomination for best informational series or special.

The new project is also executive produced by Joel Karsberg and Jessie Daniels of Kreativ Inc., dream hampton and Tamra Simmons, as well as Maria Pepin from Bunim Murray Productions and Brie Miranda Bryant for Lifetime. Sudi Khosropur will serve as co-executive and showrunner.

“Surviving Jeffrey Epstein,” which is currently in development, will focus on the women and girls who allege the financier sexual assaulted and abused them. The documentary will also look at how Epstein was able to hide his alleged criminality in plain sight with the help of his connected friends.

Epstein was charged last week with sex trafficking of minors. He pleaded not guilty and faces as much as 45 years in prison if convicted.

Filmmakers Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern (“The Preppy Murder,” “Reversing Roe”) will direct. “Epstein” is in development with Robert Friedman’s Bungalow Media + Entertainment in association with the directors. Journalist Christopher Mason is also attached.

No premiere date for either series has been announced.
