Sing-a-thon: “I couldn’t wake up on day 2, it was beyond medical treatment” – Afua Asantewaa reveals

Ghanaian journalist and women’s rights advocate, Afua Asantewaa, who attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest sing-a-thon, has shared some horrifying details of her ordeal during the event.

She revealed that on the second day of her singing marathon, she lost her voice completely and went into a coma-like state, unable to wake up or respond to anyone.

She said she was saved by her faith in God and the power of Psalm 23, which she read from her Bible that she had brought with her.

She made these revelations when she went to Reverend Sam Korankye Ankrah’s Royalhouse Chapel International to thank God and also Ghanaians for their prayers and support.

During the service, the reverend called her up on stage and asked her what kept her going when she felt tired and exhausted and wanted to give up.

Afua Asantewaa answered and said, “Psalm 23. I had a Bible with me and prior to the attempt, I had the zeal that I shouldn’t leave my Bible behind. So I think on the second day I lost my voice totally. I didn’t know what was happening. It was beyond medical treatment, yeah and then I remembered that this is why I asked you to go with your Bible. So I opened Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, he makes me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters, he restores my soul. The second day was very terrible, we had an attack and it was meant to just shut the whole process down. According to my team I couldn’t wake up, they were calling, I was not responding.”

She continued, “I just have one thing to tell God. I have been his eye, regardless of everything. He has been with me and people didn’t understand the courage that I had, it’s not a mere courage. I know who I have trusted and who I believed in, so I say thank you to God. This is not my doing, he did it because I didn’t remember which day I was, along the way I don’t remember how we started on Sunday, all I realized that we have ended, so I give him the praise.”

She also encouraged the congregation to step out of their comfort zone and pursue their dreams with faith.

She said, “And to everybody here, I encourage you, I want to encourage each and every one to step out of your comfort zone, we are too comfortable, we are extremely comfortable and that hurts. Move out of your comfort zone with faith. All you need is faith. With faith, you move mountains. Ignore what people tell you, listen to your conscience and your faith and you’ll be guided to the right path, thank you.”

Afua Asantewaa, who has been appointed as a Tourism Ambassador, sang for a total of 126 hours and 53 minutes, from December 24 to December 29, 2023.

She sang about 120 Ghanaian songs, focusing exclusively on songs from Ghana, particularly celebrating Highlife, Hiplife, and Gospel genres

The current record, set in 2012 by Indian Sunil Waghmare, stands at 105 hours.

Her attempt is yet to be verified by the Guinness World Record judges.

“Be careful!”- NDC’s Mustapha Gbande told, after polling station cutlass statement

A Governance Lecturer at the Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has criticised the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustafa Gbande, for urging the party’s members and supporters to arm themselves with machetes and guns for the 2024 elections.

Dr Otchere-Ankrah said that such a call was irresponsible and dangerous and could lead to chaos and bloodshed in the country.

He said that the NDC Deputy General Secretary was inciting people to engage in violence against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) instead of promoting peace and democracy.

He quoted Gbande as saying: “They think the way to go is violence, so I’ve told our leaders that if possible, let’s prepare twice the NPP and wait for them”.

“When you are going to the polling station, put a cutlass in your pocket . . . if we do, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to misbehave toward us,” he added in an interview on Okay FM’s “Ade Akye Abia” programme.

Dr Otchere-Ankrah said that these words were extremely unfortunate and wondered how anyone could encourage such behaviour.

He appealed to the youth to disregard the message by the NDC Deputy General Secretary and stressed that some ordinary Ghanaians had nowhere to go if the nation erupted into civil war.

“The youth of Ghana should listen; be wise!”, he exclaimed in his address on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show.

He also emphasised: “It is because of God’s love for us, that is why such things don’t happen to us. Should those things happen here, we have nowhere to go”.

He warned those inciting others to violence to be very “careful. Let’s be measured in our utterances.”.

“We have nothing to do with Berekum until…” – Bono Regional House of Chiefs

The Bono Regional House of Chiefs has suspended the Berekum Traditional Council from its activities over a dispute that arose from the funeral of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II.

The President of the House, Osagyefo Osaedeeyo Agyeman Badu II, who is also the Dormaahene, announced the suspension at an annual end of year review meeting. He said the decision was backed by seven other chiefs in the region, namely Drobohene, Nsokohene, Dwinimhene, Wenchihene, Kwaatsomanhene, and Sumaahene.

“As we sit here today, seven of us who are chiefs in this Bono Region namely Drobohene, Nsokohene Dwinimhene, Wenchihene, Kwaatsomanhene, Sumaahene and myself Dormaahene and the people of Bono have resolved that from henceforth we have nothing to do with Berekum in terms of activities in this house until they find a way to tell us something reasonable,” he stated.

The Dormaahene explained that the suspension was in response to an injunction filed by the Berekum Traditional Council, which prevented him from attending the funeral of the late Berekumhene, who died in 2019. The funeral was held from November 22 to November 26, 2023.

According to the Dormaahene, the Berekum Traditional Council had no right to stop him from paying his respects to the late chief, who was his friend and colleague. He said the suspension would remain in force until the Council apologised and justified its action.

The injunction was granted by a Sunyani High Court on November 22, following an application by Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II, a member of the Berekum Traditional Council. The applicant argued that the Dormaahene’s presence at the funeral on November 23, the same day as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, could cause a breach of peace in the area.

The funeral planning committee had invited the Dormaahene to attend the funeral on November 22, while reserving the last day for the Asantehene, who is the overlord of the Berekumhene. The Berekumhene owes allegiance to the Golden Stool of Asanteman.

The injunction sparked outrage among the supporters of the Dormaahene, who accused the Berekum Traditional Council of disrespecting and undermining him. They also claimed that the injunction was politically motivated, as the Dormaahene is a known critic of the ruling party.

  • Man caught allegedly trying to steal a baby from Ridge Hospital

Man caught allegedly trying to steal a baby from Ridge Hospital

A sensational video circulating on social media has unveiled a shocking incident at Ridge Hospital in Accra over the weekend. The footage captures the arrest of a shirtless young man accused of attempting to steal a baby.

In the video, nurses from the facility can be seen escorting the apprehended suspect out of Ridge Hospital. A voice in the background, seemingly the person recording the video, exclaims, “Someone came to the ridge hospital to steal a baby. He is the one coming. He came to steal someone’s child, and he has been arrested. A very young guy, a handsome guy, and he has come to steal a child.”

Passersby, who witnessed the scene, expressed their anger with insults directed at the suspect. The video further reveals the young man wiping blood from his nose with his shirt.

While details are scarce, a report from Daily Guide sheds some light on the incident. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the suspect had made repeated attempts to steal a baby, leading to his arrest on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

Vigilant individuals at the hospital noticed the suspect in the act and took swift action, preventing any harm to innocent lives. A video capturing the arrest quickly gained traction on social media, drawing attention to the safety and security concerns within hospitals, especially those housing vulnerable newborns.

Law enforcement officials have taken custody of the suspect, initiating a thorough investigation. The motives behind the accused young man’s actions and any potential accomplices will be examined during the course of the inquiry.

The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of swift justice for any crimes committed by the alleged ‘Baby Thief’. Authorities are also working to identify if similar incidents have occurred in the past, urging both the public and healthcare institutions to remain vigilant.

  • A TIME IN HISTORY: This woman divorced her husband after he donated a kidney to save her life

A TIME IN HISTORY: This woman divorced her husband after he donated a kidney to save her life

In 2001, Richard Batista, a neurosurgeon from Long Island, US, made a generous and loving gesture to his wife, Dawnell: he donated one of his kidneys to save her from a life-threatening condition. But little did he know that his act of kindness would be repaid with betrayal and divorce.

Four years after the transplant, Dawnell filed for divorce, accusing Richard of domestic violence and infidelity. She also barred him from seeing their three children. Richard, who claimed that his wife was cheating on him with her physical therapist, was devastated and angry.

In 2009, a week before the divorce trial was scheduled to begin, Richard made a shocking announcement: he wanted his kidney back, or $1.5 million in compensation. He said he had given his heart and his kidney to his wife, and that he was frustrated by the slow pace of the divorce negotiations.

He also went public with his demand, appearing on various media outlets and telling his side of the story. He said he wanted to raise awareness about the plight of organ donors and the need for legal protection.

However, his request was not only legally unsound, but also potentially criminal. A court ruled that human tissues or organs are not marital property, and that they cannot be valued or returned in a divorce suit. The court also said that Richard’s attempt to extort money from his wife for the kidney he donated could expose him to prosecution.

The case sparked a lot of controversy and debate, as well as jokes and ridicule. Some people sympathized with Richard, while others criticized him for being vengeful and selfish. Some people wondered what would happen if the kidney was returned, and who would perform the surgery.

The case also raised ethical and moral questions about organ donation and transplantation. Is it right to donate an organ to someone you love, expecting nothing in return? Is it wrong to divorce someone who gave you a part of themselves to save your life? What are the rights and responsibilities of organ donors and recipients?

The case of Richard and Dawnell Batista is a rare and extreme example of how a life-saving gift can turn into a bitter dispute. It is also a reminder of the risks and rewards of organ donation, and the importance of respecting the dignity and autonomy of both donors and recipients.

  • Asante gold regalia to return home after 150 years in British museums

Asante gold regalia to return home after 150 years in British museums

Ghana is gearing up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in 2024, and amidst the festivities, a monumental development unfolds. The Asante gold artefacts, looted by the British in 1874, are set to make a triumphant return to their ancestral home.

In a remarkable push for cultural restitution, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had engaged in discussions with the directors of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in London. The revered Asantehene expressed his fervent desire to have these precious items back in time for his silver jubilee on the Golden Stool.

In May of this year, Otumfuo, accompanied by his technical advisors Ivor Agyeman-Duah (on the left) and Prof. Malcolm McLeod, engaged in discussions with British Museum officials in London.

The Asante gold regalia, integral to the cultural heritage of the Asante people, were seized by the British following the third Anglo-Asante war of 1874. This war resulted in the destruction of the palace of Asantehene Kofi Karikari, and the subsequent imposition of a heavy indemnity of 50,000 ounces of gold.

Among the looted items are a pipe, three pectoral discs, a pair of silver anklets, and various beaten gold pieces used for adorning state stools or swords. A portion of the gold was auctioned by the London crown jewellers, Garrard’s, to fund pensions for the wounded and next of kin.

The anticipated return of the Asante artefacts in 2024 aligns with two other significant events in Asanteman: the celebration of 150 years since the third Anglo-Asante war and the centenary of the return of the 13th Asantehene, Prempeh I, from 28 years of exile in the Seychelles.

The V&A Museum is actively engaged in developing a programme to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1874 war in London. This initiative involves collaboration between Ghanaian and British artists who will jointly create a memorial.

To negotiate the repatriation of the artefacts, the Asantehene has assembled a team of experts, including historian and museum economist Ivor Agyeman-Duah and former Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum, Professor Malcolm McLeod. Discussions with the V&A Museum’s director, Dr Tristram Hunt, are progressing, with an agreement expected to be signed before February 2024.

The restitution of the Asante artefacts is poised to have a profound impact on Ghana’s tourism, academic, and cultural sectors. According to Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies at the University of Cape Coast, the Asantehene’s rightful demand for restitution will contribute significantly to the history and identity of the Asante people.

Prof. Kwarteng emphasizes that these artefacts, once returned, will find a home in the Manhyia Palace Museum, which has undergone extensive transformation to receive and showcase the beauty and craftsmanship of the Asante gold regalia.

The anticipated influx of local and international visitors is expected to not only appreciate the historical significance but also promote academic research and highlight the rich culture of the Asante people.

  • “We are walking into a crucial election in 2024, where is the white paper?” – Atta Mills Institute demands

“We are walking into a crucial election in 2024, where is the white paper?” – Atta Mills Institute demands

A former Director of Communication at the Office of the President, Koku Anyidoho, has accused the government of neglecting the work done by the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC), which was established by the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2010.

Anyidoho, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Atta Mills Institute, a policy think tank, said the government had failed to implement the recommendations of the CRC, which were aimed at improving Ghana’s governance system and addressing the challenges facing the 1992 constitution.

Anyidoho made these allegations in a video he posted on Twitter, where he said the CRC, which was chaired by Professor K. Fiajor and had other eminent persons as members, submitted its report and a draft bill for possible amendments to the constitution in 2011. The report was based on extensive consultations with Ghanaians from all walks of life who expressed their views and concerns about the constitution. The report also included a white paper, which was issued by the late President Atta Mills before his death in 2012, outlining the government’s position on the recommendations.

However, Anyidoho said the white paper and the draft bill had been ignored by successive governments and that no action had been taken to implement the recommendations of the CRC. Anyidoho said this was a waste of public funds and a betrayal of the trust and expectations of Ghanaians who had participated in the constitutional review process.

Anyidoho also expressed shock and dismay at the claims by some prominent personalities, including the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, that they were unaware of the existence of the CRC and its work. Anyidoho expressed concern about this posture, as some of these people were key members of the Mills administration and should have been familiar with the CRC and its outcomes.

Determined to revive the constitutional review issue, Anyidoho pledged to hold the government accountable for implementation of the recommendations. Anyidoho said he would invoke the Right to Information Act and demand answers from the government about the whereabouts of the white paper and the draft bill. Anyidoho also said he would mobilise public opinion and pressure the major political parties to speak to the issue of the constitutional review and to commit to implementing the recommendations before the 2024 elections.

He emphasised the visionary nature of the late President Atta Mills, who foresaw the need for constitutional reform. Anyidoho said some of the recommendations of the CRC included limiting the powers of the President, reviewing the emoluments of Article 71 office holders, ensuring the independence and accountability of public institutions, and enhancing the participation and representation of the people in the democratic process.

According to Anyidoho, implementing these recommendations would improve the quality of governance and democracy in Ghana and would honour the legacy of the late President Atta Mills, who was the first sitting president of the Fourth Republic to die in office.

Some pastors “lobbying” against anti-LGBTQ+ Bill – MP reveals

Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, has disclosed that some pastors are actively lobbying against the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, currently under consideration.

In an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie,’ on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, Anyimadu-Antwi revealed that religious leaders presented a report outlining reasons opposing the controversial bill.

“Most pastors also came to say that this law is good and should be passed. So it is both for and against. But the committee has resolved that we will pass the bill,” stated the Asante Akyem Central MP during the interview with Mac Jerry Osei-Agyemeng.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked significant controversy, with divergent opinions on its merits and implications. Despite the opposing views, Anyimadu-Antwi assured that the bill “will be passed very soon.”

The revelation of pastors engaging in efforts to sway the decision adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing discourse surrounding the legislation.

Bawumia hails WASSCE results as proof of Free SHS success

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hailed the recently released 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, asserting that they showcase the high calibre of students in Ghana’s Senior High School (SHS) education sector.

In a statement on Monday, December 18, 2023, Dr Bawumia addressed critics of the results, emphasizing the excellence of Ghanaian students. He presented data from the WASSCE results, highlighting outstanding achievements by SHS students on both national and international platforms.

“Our SHS students go from Keta SHS to Harvard University and excel.

“Our girls at Mamfe Senior High go for a world competition in robotics and win against teams from the USA, Germany, and South Korea.

“Our boys from Prempeh College have won robotics world competitions against global competitors many times.

“Yet when these same students excel at WASSCE, some people, for political reasons, even question the integrity of their results! Why do some always believe that it is impossible for our students or our people to be the best? It is possible!” Dr Bawumia emphasised.

Dr Bawumia’s post on Facebook on December 19th 2023

He congratulated the candidates for their “excellent” performance in the 2023 exam and urged a shift in the perception that doubts the capabilities of Ghanaian students.

According to data shared by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), 73.11% of students who sat for this year’s exam obtained grades A1-C6 in all core subjects. This marks the highest performance since 2015.

“2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 are the Free SHS Graduates and the only years in the past 8 years that more than 50% of candidates obtained A1-C6 in All Core subjects,” a footnote accompanying the data shared by Dr Bawumia read.

The Free SHS policy, introduced by the government in 2017, aims to provide free education from basic to secondary level to all Ghanaian children. The policy has been praised by some as a major achievement in expanding access and quality of education, but also criticised by others as unsustainable and poorly implemented

‘The Nicest Judge in the World’ Frank Caprio battling cancer, pleads for prayers

Renowned Rhode Island traffic judge, Frank Caprio, known as ‘The Nicest Judge in the World,’ disclosed that he is grappling with pancreatic cancer.

The 87-year-old, star of the reality TV show ‘Caught in Providence,’ took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the emotional news, stating that his diagnosis coincided with his birthday last month, a day usually filled with joy for him.

“This birthday is a little different than any other I have ever had,” Caprio expressed. “Quite recently, I was not feeling well and received a medical examination, and the report was not a good one. And so I have been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, which is an insidious form of cancer.”

Caprio acknowledged the support of his “wonderful team of doctors” overseeing his treatment in Rhode Island and at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital.

“I pray that God guides their thoughts and their hands in their treatment of me. I know this is a long road, and I’m fully prepared to fight as hard as I can,” he affirmed.

The judge, humbled by the outpouring of friendship and kind messages, made a heartfelt plea to well-wishers. “I would ask each of you, in your own way, to please pray for me. I am in need of the power of prayer, which I believe, in addition to the medical treatment that I’m receiving, is the most powerful weapon to help me survive this.”

Pancreatic cancer, constituting approximately 3% of all cancers in the United States, primarily affects men. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 64,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer annually, with over 50,500 expected to succumb to it in 2023. Symptoms often manifest in advanced stages, including intense back pain, loss of appetite, depression, fatigue, new-onset diabetes, and jaundice.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Caprio acknowledged that the encouragement and well-wishes “mean the world” to him as he confronts this health challenge. In a poignant moment during the video, he buried his face in his hands and implored, “SAY A PRAYER… Your help will give me the strength to fight this health battle.”

Judge Frank Caprio, having served as a Providence Municipal Court Judge since 1985, is renowned for his caring personality in the courtroom on the show ‘Caught in Providence,’ nominated for a Daytime Emmy award in 2021.

  • Shalimar Abbiusi case: Moment Francis-Xavier got physical with GIS personnel

Shalimar Abbiusi case: Moment Francis-Xavier got physical with GIS personnel

In a recent video shared by Joy News on Twitter, a dramatic scene unfolded during the arrest of Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force, as her legal team, led by Human Rights lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu, attempted to prevent her detention by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

The footage captures Shalimar being pushed into a GIS vehicle by officers, with Francis-Xavier vehemently trying to intervene.

Another person, believed to be part of the GIS team, not in uniform, held onto Francis, pulling him away from the car.

In response, Mr Sosu angrily turned, pushing back at the man and questioning the manner of their actions.

“is this how you do your work? is that how you do your work? you are saying that the person’s permit….is that how you do your work?”. he shouted, expressing concern about the handling of Shalimar’s arrest.

The unidentified GIS member is seen asking Mr Sosu to “stop! stop! stop!”, while another lawyer from Shalimar’s legal team confronted the GIS personnel, questioning their conduct, by asking, “why are you abusing him?”

Shalimar’s reported parents were also seen in the background crying and attempting to also prevent her arrest.

This is the second time during the course of this case that Sosu has been captured on camera “fighting tooth and nail” for his client after a court proceeding.

The previous episode occurred on December 11, 2023, at the Kaneshie District Court, following the granting of bail to Shalimar Abbiusi.

Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu clashed with a representative from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over the terms of Shalimar’s release.

Despite the court’s decision to grant bail, the NIB official insisted on taking Shalimar back into custody immediately. Francis Xavier vehemently opposed this, arguing that once bail was granted, she was free to go home once the necessary formalities were guaranteed.

The disagreement led to a verbal exchange and a brief standoff on the court’s stairs.

In a video posted on X by @metrotvgh on December 11, Sosu is seen having a brief verbal exchange with the NIB representative, who seemed visibly unhappy about Sosu’s opposition, as they both descended a flight of stairs.

“…if you say that, we can follow you,” Sosu is heard saying. The NIB rep in response said: “I brought her here.” “But the court has released her,” Sosu replied.

Amid the legal turmoil, it is reported that the Ghana Immigration Service has revoked Shalimar Abbiusi’s residency permit, and she is set to be deported soon.

Before her recent arrest, the charges against her, related to allegedly obtaining a student residency permit by false declaration, were dropped earlier today upon the prosecution’s request.

The court also further directed the release of Shalimar’s seized iPhone 13 Pro, citing no incriminating evidence found.

The legal battles surrounding Shalimar Abbiusi have raised concerns about power abuse, perceived political persecution, and multiple human rights violations, according to a press release by the New Force on December 7.

A video shared by Joy News on Twitter captures the tense moment when Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) personnel re-arrested Shalimar Abbiusi, the spokesperson for the New Force.

The footage shows GIS officials pushing her into a service vehicle, while her legal team, led by Human Rights Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu, attempts to intervene.

Chaos ensues in the video, with reported parents of Abbiusi seen crying and trying to prevent the arrest. The visibly upset lawyer Francis Xavier-Sosu, attempting to resist being pushed, confronts a GIS official physically.

According to a Joy News report, the Ghana Immigration Service has revoked Abuissi’s residency permit, leading to her scheduled deportation later in the day.

The grounds for the revocation allege that she obtained a student residency permit through false declaration.

Notably, earlier on the same day, all charges against Abbiusi were dropped by the state prosecutor. The court also directed the National Investigations Bureau to release her seized iPhone 13 Pro, as no incriminating evidence was found during a thorough check.

The recent legal battles of Ms. Abbiusi, as highlighted in the New Force’s December 7 press release, raise concerns about power abuse, persecution of perceived political opponents, and multiple human rights violations.

The unfolding events and confrontations underscore the intensity of the situation surrounding the New Force spokesperson’s legal troubles.

  • From wood to oil: The mysterious link between SML and a timber company its boss won’t name

From wood to oil: The mysterious link between SML and a timber company its boss won’t name

Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), allegedly an extension of a timber company, is facing scrutiny over a GH₵ 3 billion contract from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for “revenue assurance” services in the downstream petroleum sector.

The Fourth Estate’s investigative report reveals that SML, despite lacking experience, was “handpicked for the contract through the single-source procurement method.”

“In 2019, when the GRA entered into an agreement with SML Ghana, Mr. Sottie was the Technical Advisor to the Commissioner General of the GRA. Mr. Sottie left his job as the Technical Advisor to the GRA Commissioner General in the same year to manage SML Ghana in 2020 when the company started implementing its contract with the GRA. The GRA has been the only customer of SML Ghana since its establishment, according to Mr. Sottie. This means at the time the company was handpicked for the contract through the single-source procurement method, it had no prior experience in the services it claimed to have expertise,” the report stated.

When questioned about SML’s history, Managing Director Christian Tetteh Sottie disclosed only that it was “an offshoot of a timber company” but reportedly refused to name the timber company.

Further investigation by The Fourth Estate revealed through online records that the timber company linked to SML is Evans Timbers Limited. Apparently, the CEO of SML, Evans Adusei, is also the CEO of Evans Timbers GH. Evans Adusei is the sole shareholder of SML, with Evans Adusei and his daughter, Esther Adusei, serving as directors. SML’s principal activities include general trading and services, import and export of general goods, and audit service activities.

It’s worth noting that Christian Tetteh Sottie, the current Managing Director of SML, was a Technical Advisor to the Commissioner General of the GRA in 2019 when the GRA entered into an agreement with SML. He later transitioned to managing SML in 2020 when the company began implementing its contract with the GRA.

With the GRA as the sole customer of SML Ghana since its establishment, concerns arise about the company’s qualifications for the contract.

The company allegedly falsely claimed on its website to address issues such as under-reporting, diversion, and dilution of fuel products, prompting skepticism from officials at the Petroleum Division of the GRA.

As seen on the fourth estate website

However, during The Fourth Estate’s investigation, Christian Sottie reportedly clarified that SML did not engage in checking underreporting or anomalies in the downstream sector, contradicting its website claims. The sudden disappearance of these claims from the company’s website further deepens the mystery surrounding SML’s operations.

  • SML received GHC24m monthly payment from govt even after ‘lying’ about what they do – Report

SML received GHC24m monthly payment from govt even after ‘lying’ about what they do – Report

An explosive investigative report by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni‘s The Fourth Estate, titled “THE GH₵ 3 BILLION LIE,” exposes startling revelations about Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

Despite making wild claims of saving Ghanaian billions, SML continued to receive monthly payments of up to GH₵24 million from the government. The blockbuster report, released today on December 18, 2023, delves into a murky contract signed with the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The investigation, conducted by Evans Aziamor-Mensah, Adwoa Adobea-Owusu, and Manasseh Azure Awuni of The Fourth Estate, uncovers a trail of deceit involving false and unsubstantiated claims made by SML. The company’s dubious operations became the basis for substantial payments it received from the government, with indications that officials from the Ministry of Finance and GRA were aware of the false claims.

The Fourth Estate team confronted SML’s management with the findings, leading to the sudden disappearance of major services claimed by the company from its website. This action raised further questions about the legitimacy of SML’s dealings with the government.

The investigation also sheds light on an outrageous deal initiated by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, entitling SML to over $100 million annually for the next decade. The report highlights a 2019 contract signed between the Government of Ghana and SML, questioning its necessity amid pre-existing measures introduced in 2018 to curb losses in the downstream petroleum sector.

Key revelations include the questionable procurement process, where SML, led by Managing Director Christian Tetteh Sottie, was handpicked through a single-source method despite lacking prior experience in the services it claimed to provide. Procurement expert Kobina Ata-Bedu raises concerns about potential breaches of Ghana’s procurement laws.

The report dismantles SML’s false claims of resolving issues such as underreporting, diversion, and dilution of fuel products in the petroleum industry. The company’s website displayed misleading information that was later removed after the Fourth Estate’s investigation.

Christian Tetteh Sottie, the Managing Director of SML, admitted that the company did not engage in activities related to checking underreporting or anomalies in the downstream sector, contradicting its earlier claims. The GRA officials, present during the confrontation, expressed shock at the services SML claimed to provide.

Despite the revelations, SML’s Managing Director denied knowledge of the GH₵3 billion savings claim, attributing it to a mistake made by an IT Systems Engineer during a presentation to the GRA. The Fourth Estate’s persistent questioning forced admissions of discrepancies, prompting SML to remove the false claims from its website.

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who initially lauded SML for saving billions, now faces scrutiny as evidence suggests financial mismanagement. Despite unanswered Right to Information requests, sources close to the Ministry of Finance reveal monthly payments of up to GH₵24 million to SML.

The shocking details unveiled in this report raise serious questions about the transparency and legitimacy of government contracts, urging further investigation into SML’s dealings and the accountability of public funds.

SML’s $1b rip-off: How Ken Ofori-Atta allegedly betrayed Ghana in ‘dirty’ oil deal

In a shocking revelation from an investigative report titled “THE GH₵ 3 BILLION LIE” by Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s Fourth Estate , released on December 18, 2023, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in a scandalous oil deal with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

The investigative series by The Fourth Estate exposes Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), which claimed to have saved Ghana over GH₵3 billion in revenue through its contract with the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). However, the investigation reveals that these claims were entirely false.

SML’s Managing Director, Christian Tetteh Sottie, when confronted, disowned the GH₵3 billion figure, attributing it to a misinterpretation by the media. The company faced further scrutiny for false assertions that its services curbed malpractices in the petroleum industry, a claim debunked by evidence provided during the investigation.

Notably, SML admitted that its ultrasound meters at the nation’s fuel depots were less accurate than the certified meters at the depots’ loading gantries. Despite these discrepancies and the admission that SML never detected any under-declaration, the Ministry of Finance expanded the scope of SML’s work in June 2023.

A letter from the Ministry of Finance dated June 22, 2023, revealed that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta instructed the GRA to include upstream oil drilling and gold mining in SML’s responsibilities. Representatives from GRA and SML subsequently met with the Ghana Chamber of Mines to discuss the contract’s execution.

Under the new contract, SML stands to receive US$0.75 for every barrel of oil produced in Ghana, translating to a minimum daily earning of US$120,000. Additionally, the company will receive 0.75% of the total amount of gold produced in Ghana, potentially amounting to US$50 million based on 2022 production figures.

The combined earnings from the downstream and upstream petroleum sectors, along with the gold sector, would exceed US$100 million annually. This controversial contract, not acknowledged by the Petroleum Commission, has raised concerns about unnecessary costs and potential revenue loss for Ghana.

Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), criticized SML’s role, deeming it needless and potentially detrimental to Ghana’s revenue. The Petroleum Commission, responsible for regulating the upstream sector, claims to have no knowledge of the contract and has no reported leakages in the sector.

As the details of this scandal unfold, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faces mounting accusations of betraying Ghana’s financial interests in a deal that could cost the government more than the annual revenue from various taxes.

“MPs, big men” park at Labone SHS, PRESEC, UPSA and wait for “pimps” to bring boys to them! – Angel Maxine claims

Controversial LGBTQ+ rights activist and transgender musician, Angel Maxine, has claimed that she has evidence of a widespread sex scandal involving politicians, pimps, and boys at various schools in the country.

During a protest against the proposed anti-LGBT bill in a video on instagram, Angel Maxine claimed, “All you these so-called politicians, all you these so-called big men, MPs, you drive your cars and go and park at Labone SHS, PRESEC, UPSA, and then when you park, then your pimps will arrange the boys and then bring to you. They are people’s kids. Do you think we don’t know? People you have abused, you have molested, you have taken advantage of, people who are hurt, everything is on this paper here and they are ready to speak out.”

She further threatened to expose MPs secretly involved in LGBT activities, along with revealing the identities of their family members and children who are allegedly gay or lesbian.

“Pass the bill, and I will show you your MP who is an LGBT person. All of you, your names are here. All of you, who have been texting people to get you boys to sleep with, all of you who have been begging your pimps to hook you up with people, all your chats and conversations are here. Pass the bill. Pass the bill and I will expose your family members, I will expose your children who are gay people, who are lesbians.”

These sensational claims by Angel Maxine have ignited widespread outrage and disbelief among the public. The allegations come amidst the ongoing debate in parliament over the controversial anti-LGBT bill, which has garnered criticism from human rights groups and foreign governments.

The anti-LGBT bill, which has been widely criticised by human rights groups and foreign governments, is currently being debated in parliament.

The bill proposes harsh penalties for anyone who engages in, promotes, or supports homosexuality, as well as banning same-sex marriage, adoption, and surrogacy.

The bill also seeks to outlaw any form of advocacy or expression of LGBT rights or issues. The bill has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some supporting it as a way of preserving the country’s culture and morality, and others opposing it as a violation of human rights and dignity.

The bill has also sparked protests and counter-protests from both sides of the debate.

The Independent Ghana has not been able to verify the claims made by Angel Maxine.

Angel Maxine’s call to action implored President Akufo-Addo to investigate the presence of LGBTQ+ individuals at the Jubilee House before considering the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

He/She claimed there are some “so-called politicians, big men,” who visit secondary and tertiary schools in Ghana and employ the services of pimps to recruit young boys for their sexual pleasure.

“President Nana Akufo-Addo, check the jubilee house, check the jubilee house well if there are no LGBT people working there. All you these so-called politicians, all you these so-called big men, MPS, you drive your cars and go and park at Labone SHS, PRESEC, UPSA, and then when you park, then your pimps will arrange the boys and then bring to you. They are people’s kids,” Angel alleged.

The visibly upset transwoman also claimed some of these politicians have “abused, molested and taken advantage of” these “kids”.

“Do you think we don’t know? People you have abused, you have molested, you have taken advantage of, people who are hurt, everything is on this paper here and they are ready to speak out. Pass the bill, and I will show you your MP who is an LGBT person. All of you, your names are here. All of you, who have been texting people to get you boys to sleep with, all of you who have been begging your pimps to hook you up with people, all your chats and conversations are here,” Maxine passionately noted.

“Pass the bill. Pass the bill and I will expose your family members, I will expose your children who are gay people, who are lesbians,” he/she warned.

He/She said that they were all old criminals who had done nothing for their constituencies and the nation, and said that they were wasting their time and energy on a bill that violated human rights and dignity instead of focusing on the economic and social challenges facing Ghanaians.

Maxine also threatened to expose some of the politicians who are secretly gay and have had sexual relations with him/her or others.

He/she claimed to have evidence of their chats and claimed to have given copies to his/her lawyer, a loud influencer in Ghana, and a human rights lawyer in America for safe keeping.

“Idiot, goat, useless man, crazy dog!” – Angel Maxine goes after Sam George

Angel Maxine, a Ghanaian transwoman, has taken to Instagram to issue a bold challenge to politician Sam George, known for his stance on the anti-LGBT bill.

In a video captioned “This is a Subtle WARNING ⚠️,” Maxine directed a barrage of questions and criticisms at the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr George, questioning his achievements and calling out other politicians in the process.

In the video, Maxine questions George’s authority, asking, “Who is Sam George? Who is that idiot, who thinks he can dictate to Ghanaians?” Maxine goes on to critique George’s political record, challenging him to name his achievements and contributions to Ghana.

“You Sam George, you are all over the place like an Ashawo who just wants to be noticed. Who is that goat. Sam George, name your achievements. Name some of the things you have established in Ghana. What jobs have you created in Ghana? What jobs have you created in Ningo Prampram. Even Prampram you cannot fix it. Do you see how useless you are as a politician? Oh! You think I don’t know you? You think I don’t remember you? I remember those days when you used to follow E.T Mensah around like a puppet. Do you remember Apeku? King’s bar in Prampram. Apeku who is dead. Do you remember him?,” Angel said.

The transwoman expresses concern for the youth, highlighting issues of unemployment and the need for opportunities. Maxine accuses politicians, including George, of turning a blind eye to the struggles of the people and failing to address critical issues such as job creation and the high cost of living.

“Let me tell you something Sam George, the youth are suffering, the youth needs jobs, what opportunities have you created for the youths. People are qualified to get jobs, yet if it is not who they know, they can’t find jobs. There are so many jobless youths around. What are you doing about that situation? Before a woman finds a job, she has to sleep with her boss, to maintain a job, what are you doing about this situation. A lot of protests has gone on, with the high price of sanitary pads. What have you done about it? Tell Ghanaians. MTN is defrauding Ghanaians, what have you done about it,” he added.

Notably, Maxine takes aim at the politicians supporting the anti-LGBT bill, accusing them of hypocrisy and engaging in questionable behavior. Maxine claims to possess evidence of conversations with gay politicians and threatens to expose them if the bill is passed.

“Look at the stress Ghanians are going through, look at the high cost of living in Ghana, look at a bunch of old fools, old criminals, old thieves, following a small boy, your son to pass a bill that will affect you yourselves,”

In a direct challenge to George, Maxine dares him to pass the bill, asserting that the consequences will be severe. The transwoman vows to reveal information about politicians involved in clandestine activities, alleging that she has shared this evidence with legal professionals for safekeeping.

As tensions rise over the anti-LGBT bill, Angel Maxine’s bold challenge adds a new dimension to the debate, raising questions about the motivations behind the proposed legislation and the personal lives of those supporting it. The spotlight is now on Sam George and other politicians as they face a daring confrontation from an outspoken advocate for the transgender community.

  • Ola Girls SHS defies Free SHS policy, charges parents GHC2,212 for admission

Some parents and guardians of first-year students admitted to Ola Girls SHS have expressed shock and dismay at the exorbitant fees they are required to pay before their wards are enrolled.

According to information obtained by The Independent Ghana from reliable sources, the management of the school is charging over GHC2,210 for 10 items, including uniform, anniversary cloth, PTA levy, extra classes, feeding support, anniversary levy, school hymnal, house jersey, house bedsheet, and packing fee.

A guardian who spoke to The Independent Ghana confirmed that he had paid for these items before his ward was enrolled, and provided receipts issued by the school, to corroborate his claim.

The fees being charged by Ola Girls SHS have sparked outrage on social media, as many users have questioned the relevance and legality of some of the items, especially the anniversary levy and the packing fee.

Others have also accused the headteacher of the school of exploiting the parents and guardians to generate more revenue for the school, as the government has not been able to meet all the demands of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The Free SHS policy, which was introduced by the government in 2017, is meant to allow students in secondary cycle institutions to access free education, as well as some items such as textbooks, uniforms, and meals.

However, some parents and guardians have complained that they are still paying for some items that are supposed to be provided by the government, or are being forced to buy items that are not approved by the education authorities.

This information comes at a time when the Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted 11 headteachers of various SHSs across the country for imposing unapproved fees or selling unauthorized items to first-year students during the enrolment process.

Seven of the affected headteachers are from the Ashanti Region, two from the Greater Accra Region, and two from the Eastern Region.

The GES has announced that it has initiated investigations into the actions of the implicated headteachers, and has warned other headteachers to adhere to the government’s policy prohibiting the sale of items to students within school premises.

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has also issued a stern warning to headteachers nationwide, urging them to respect the Free SHS policy and refrain from charging parents and guardians for items that are not approved by the GES.

  • There is nothing wrong in using asphalt to patch motorway potholes – Roads Minister tells parliament

There is nothing wrong in using asphalt to patch motorway potholes – Roads Minister tells parliament

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has justified the use of asphalt to patch potholes on the Accra-Tema motorway, saying it is a valid engineering practice.

He said this while answering some questions in parliament on the repair works on the motorway, which is a concrete road.

“There are various ways of patching potholes. The motorway obviously is a concrete road and it is rigid and from an engineering point of view, there is absolutely nothing wrong in patching potholes with asphaltic concrete. From an engineering point of view there is nothing wrong and I have indicated that we had to do a cost-benefit analysis of what method to use,” he said.

He explained that using concrete to patch concrete would require closing the road for a period, for it to cure, which would cause inconvenience to the motorists and commuters who use the motorway daily.

“Normally when you want to use concrete to concrete, it will mean closing the road for a period, for it to cure and even if you want to use any additive, you still need to close the road because the additives will only mean that you are giving it a faster rate, for it to cure, but it cannot be cured instantly. The nature of traffic on the motorway is such that you cannot close the motorway for any length of period,” he noted.

He assured the public that the use of asphalt was a temporary measure, and that the government had plans to reconstruct the entire motorway in the near future.

  • Don’t be violent towards LGBTQ+ persons – Rev Lawrence Tetteh ‘pleads with’ Ghanaians

Don’t be violent towards LGBTQ+ persons – Rev Lawrence Tetteh ‘pleads with’ Ghanaians

The renowned evangelist and president of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Rev Lawrence Tetteh, has urged Ghanaians not to be violent towards LGBTQ persons, even as he expressed his opposition to the practice. He said this during a discussion on GTV’s breakfast show with host Kafui Dey on the subject of the stalling of the passage of the anti-LGBTQ bill in Ghana.

The bill, which seeks to criminalise and punish LGBTQ activities and advocacy in the country, has generated heated debate and controversy among various stakeholders, including religious leaders, human rights activists, politicians, and the general public. The bill has also attracted international attention and criticism from some foreign governments and organisations, who have threatened to cut aid and impose sanctions on Ghana if the bill is passed.

Rev Lawrence Tetteh, who is a Christian, said that he does not endorse LGBTQ and that he would be a coward and a hypocrite if he did. He said that LGBTQ is not part of Ghanaian culture and tradition, and that it goes against the teachings of the Bible and the Quran. However, he also said that LGBTQ persons should not be subjected to violence and hatred, but rather be shown love and compassion, and be won over to Christ or Allah.

“The only thing I keep saying is that we shouldn’t be violent towards them. Let’s see how we can win them to Christ, just like they will win them to Allah. But it is not our culture, it is not our tradition,” he said.

He also expressed his concern about the political implications of the bill, noting that most of the sponsors of the bill were from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), while only one was from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He questioned the motives and interests of the politicians who have failed to support the bill, and urged them not to forget their civic responsibility to the people.

“And some of you, don’t cry more than the bereaved. I am looking at the people who are part of the bill and I am getting very worried. I had the privilege to go to parliament in the early days of this programme, and we were invited to parliament and I noticed that up until now, seven of the people are NDC and it looks as if only one is NPP. What are we trying to prove and who are we trying to impress? These are some of the little things that I say the nonsense must stop. Don’t be too politically right to forget your civic responsibility. In our bid to be politically right, we would be losing the people that we are supposed to be leading,” he said.

He called for a balance and a convergence on the issue, and suggested that the bill should not be too harsh or lenient, but rather reflect what is good for Ghana.

“Yes, let’s create a balance, I believe that. Let’s get to a point of convergence, I believe that. Let’s find a way around it to make sure that at least it is not too stringent a point to take, but let’s also make sure that what is good for Ghana is what we want to maintain,” he noted.

Parents of ‘The New Force’ spokesperson accuse govt of ‘kidnapping’ daughter

The parents of Shalimar Abbiusi, the 30-year-old Belgian woman renowned as the spokesperson for “The New Force,” are accusing the government of kidnapping their daughter.

The claim comes after her arrest by the National Investigations Bureau, formerly the BNI, on charges related to immigration offenses.

A video circulated on social media, shared by “The New Force,” features Abbiusi’s tearful parents pleading for her release. In the video, her mother asserts, “They kidnapped my daughter; she did nothing wrong,” while the apparent father emphasizes, “She is not a criminal… the government should give my daughter back.”

Contrarily, the Ghana Immigration Service, according to a GhanaWeb report presents a different narrative.

Alleged official statements from the Immigration Service indicate that Abbiusi’s arrest follows an ongoing inquiry into her immigration status. The Service took notice of her activities, particularly her role with “The New Force,” prompting an invitation to address concerns about her immigration status.

Investigations uncovered that Abbiusi arrived in Ghana on September 4, 2017, through Kotoka International Airport, claiming residency as a student at the Ghana Christian University College until 2018.

However, the college confirmed she was never enrolled, and her residence permit application documents were deemed forged.

In light of these revelations, Abbiusi faces charges related to immigration offenses. She has been arraigned before the court and remanded into Immigration custody pending further legal investigations.

The case sheds light on the complexity of immigration issues and the scrutiny faced by public figures in such matters.

  • “They want to know which people are behind it” – The New Force accuses NIB of harassing spokesperson in custody

“They want to know which people are behind it” – The New Force accuses NIB of harassing spokesperson in custody

The New Force, a political entity in Ghana, has raised alarms over the reported arrest and ongoing detention of Ms. Shalimar Abbiusi, one of its spokespersons.

Abbiusi, responsible for diaspora and diplomatic engagements, was reportedly summoned for discussions on Monday, December 4, 2023, and has remained in custody for the past four days under the watch of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), formerly known as the BNI.

During this period, security officials allegedly questioned Abbiusi extensively about The New Force, seeking information about its leadership and potential presidential aspirations.

The New Force has expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding her detention, citing multiple human rights violations.

Abbiusi has allegedly been denied access to legal representation, subjected to an unlawful search of her premises, and held beyond the legal 48-hour limit without formal charges. The security authorities reportedly broke into her apartment without a warrant, conducting a search that yielded no incriminating evidence.

While the authorities claim to be investigating the origins of The New Force, The New Force insists that being a political organization is not a criminal offense. The arrest of Ms. Abbiusi has sparked concerns about potential abuses of power, persecution of perceived political opponents, and human rights violations.

Despite holding a residence permit issued by the Ghana Immigration Service over three years ago, authorities have told a District Court that they have temporarily charged Abbiusi with an offense, alleging that one of the submitted documents could not be verified. They are seeking her continued custody for further investigations into The New Force.

The unfolding situation raises questions about the legitimacy of the charges against Abbiusi, the treatment of political figures in Ghana, and the potential erosion of human rights in the name of security investigations. The New Force vows to closely monitor and challenge what it sees as an unjust detention.

Belgian woman behind New Force video allegedly arrested over forged resident document

A Belgian woman, Shalimar Abbiusi, who recently introduced herself as the spokesperson of The New Force, a group that claims to be fighting for the rights of Ghanaians, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) for allegedly using a forged document to obtain a resident permit in Ghana.

This is according to a report by Media General’s 3news. Abbiusi came into the limelight after she appeared in a video that went viral on social media, in which she claimed to be the spokesperson of The New Force, a group that says it is fighting for the liberation of Ghanaians from corruption, injustice, and oppression.

The video sparked mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some supporting Abbiusi‘s message, while others questioning her credibility and motive. Some also expressed doubt about the existence and legitimacy of The New Force.

The GPS has not yet released any official statement on the reported arrest of Abbiusi.

Details surrounding the arrest are currently limited, and The Independent Ghana is actively monitoring the situation. Updates on this unfolding story will be provided as more information becomes available.

  • Elon Musk’s Starlink operations illegal in Ghana – NCA warns

Elon Musk’s Starlink operations illegal in Ghana – NCA warns

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially declared the operations of Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, as illegal in Ghana.

In a press release issued on December 7, 2023, the NCA stated that Starlink has not been licensed to operate in the country, and none of its equipment has been approved.

According to the NCA, any entity selling Starlink equipment or providing Starlink services is in direct violation of the Electronic Communications Act 2008. The public has been warned against purchasing any equipment or services from Starlink, and individuals or companies involved in the sale or operation of Starlink services are directed to cease and desist immediately.

The NCA emphasizes its commitment to ensuring fair competition in the market and protecting licensees and consumers. Starlink, on its website, had indicated plans to provide services in Ghana by the third quarter of 2024, subject to regulatory approval.

However, some middlemen in Ghana are already offering Starlink services, quoting installation prices ranging between GHS1,100 and GHS18,000 monthly. The implications of the NCA’s announcement for existing Starlink users in Ghana remain unclear, as no specific enforcement actions have been announced yet. Possible outcomes could include sanctions for vendors or negotiations between the NCA and Starlink for obtaining a license to operate in Ghana.

Starlink, a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites launched by SpaceX, aims to provide high-speed internet access globally, even in hard-to-reach areas. The NCA’s move raises questions about the future of Starlink services in Ghana and the regulatory approval process.

Over 600 mass shootings and 1,571 children killed in US in 2023 – Gun Violence Archive reports

The United States has witnessed a surge of mass shootings in 2023, with at least 630 incidents reported so far, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks gun-related violence in the country.

A mass shooting is defined by the Gun Violence Archive as an incident in which four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter. By this definition, at least 38 mass shootings where four or more people were killed have been reported so far this year.

The Gun Violence Archive also reports that as of December 5, at least 1,571 children under the age of 18 have been shot and killed in 2023. This number includes both victims and perpetrators of gun violence, as well as accidental and intentional shootings.

The issue of gun violence in the US has sparked heated debates over the need for stricter gun control laws and the protection of the right to bear arms. The US has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world, with an estimated 393 million firearms in circulation, according to a 2018 study.

Las Vegas was the scene of the deadliest mass shooting in US history in October 2017 when a gunman opened fire from his hotel room on the Las Vegas strip during the Harvest Music Festival, killing 59 and injuring more than 500. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and the FBI closed its investigation in 2019 without finding a clear motive.

The Gun Violence Archive is an independent non-profit organization that provides charts and maps of gun violence to visualize the impact of gun use across the country. The organization relies on media reports, law enforcement sources, and public records to collect and verify its data. The organization’s website states that its mission is “to provide free online public access to accurate information about gun-related violence in the United States”.

  • “I do not have GHC 30K to apply” – Man begs IGP to make him a police officer

“I do not have GHC 30K to apply” – Man begs IGP to make him a police officer

A man who claims he has the strength and a sound mind to join the Ghana Police Service has made a passionate appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to recruit him without paying a bribe of GHC 30,000.

The man, who identified himself as Ernest, recorded a video of himself and posted it on social media, where he addressed the IGP multiple times and showed his arm muscles to demonstrate his ability. He said he wanted to become a police officer, but he did not have anyone to help him or the money to pay for the application.

“IGP, all due respect. I have respect for you. I want to become a police officer, but I do not have anyone to help me. IGP, I do not have GHC 30,000 to apply for the police service. IGP, I have the strength and a sound mind. IGP, why are you making me waste my energy and strength that I want to use to protect Ghana. I am wasting my strength in town. IGP, the police work is for men, it requires strength. It is for those with a sound mind. There are qualified men who want to join the force, but we don’t have anyone, we do not have GHC 30,000 to apply. IGP, there are men who want the job to do, with all due respect. I know you are aware this job is for me,” Ernest said in his video.

The video, which was posted by a user @asiamah5614, has generated mixed reactions from other social media users. Some supported Ernest’s attempt, while others ridiculed him or accused him of wanting to join the police service for corrupt reasons.

@ARRESTED41 commented: “Please guyz where is IGP. HE NEED TO WATCH THIS”

@Pipii110 commented: “@GhPoliceService hook this man up please”

@felix_mickenson commented: “He wants to join the bribery and Rogers community. But God is saving him.”

@afrikanpedia commented: “Or he cried out cause he won’t av access to daily 2k from drivers”

@BatistutaAdjei commented: “Imagine if he becomes a police officer and he stops you for road for over-speeding and you try to give am bribe”

@radiantcorn commented: “We nor day take strength enter police. If you can’t afford admission go and do other work and get money for it. Stop the banku talk of forcing urself to something u won’t get”

    @MayorSavage1 commented: “Stop ranting!”

@sidaundefeated1 commented: “As if he won’t take bribes”

@osama_stan47442 commented: “So that he can go and be doing rubbish there Omo he should look for something better”

@grey_obafemi commented: “Imagine this dude on police uniform… He looks like someone who will misuse power”

@Michealalandu commented: “Are you threatening the IGP? Because why are you shouting?”

Ernest’s video comes at a time when there have been claims of paying huge sums to get enrolled in the Ghana Police Service. Some applicants in the past have alleged that they were asked to pay some monies to secure a place in the police service.

However, the police administration has consistently denied such claims and urged the public to report any such cases to the appropriate authorities.

The police service has also warned the public to beware of fraudsters who use fake social media accounts to solicit money from unsuspecting applicants.

The police service has said that the recruitment process is transparent and merit-based, and that no one can influence the outcomeThe IGP has not yet responded to Ernest’s video or his request to join the police service without paying the money he claims he needs to pay.

It is not clear whether Ernest has applied for the police service or met the requirements for recruitment. The public is advised to follow the official procedures and guidelines for the police service applications and not to fall prey to any scams or illegal activities.

Notorious fake money dealer arrested, reveals how he scammed people

A young man, identified as Ernest Azuma, has been arrested in Nkonya, a town in the Oti Region of Ghana, for reportedly engaging in the sale and circulation of counterfeit currency.

During an interrogation at what appears to be a police station, Azuma, wearing a remorseful expression, disclosed the source of the fake money and outlined his distribution method.

While avoiding specifics about how he persuades victims to exchange genuine currency for counterfeit notes, he admitted to enticing individuals by promising to double the amount they provide.

Azuma revealed that the counterfeit money was supplied by someone named Zariatu from Accra, who made a drop-off in Kumasi, where Azuma obtained the fake currency.

In his statement, Azuma said, “I am called Azuma Ernest. This money is from Accra. Someone brought it from Accra, and we met them in Kumasi, and I took it. It is fake. The person said when we bring GHC500, they will give you a GHC1000. The person is called Zariatu. I am from Kasapin, and I am now in Nkonya. They gave me the money to sell. I sell fake GHC200, such that when you bring real GHC100, then I give you fake GHC200. So if you give me real GHC500, I will give you fake GHC1000. Now that I have been arrested, all I want to tell people is that this money is not good, so nobody should use it. So if you go ahead and you are arrested, you will be in trouble. I am pleading with the government to forgive me. This will not happen again.”

The police have not yet commented on the case or confirmed the identity of Zariatu, who is suspected to be the source of the fake money. It is not clear how many people have been duped by Azuma and his accomplices, or how much fake money is in circulation. The public is advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious transactions to the authorities.

  • Amidu reveals what Kissi Agyebeng allegedly did with 50 vehicles from Tema port in 2022

The former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has accused the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, of have hidden 50 vehicles and cars from the Tema port, under the basement of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), last year.

He claimed that these vehicles were procured without following the proper procurement procedures and were not presented to the public as gifts or grants.

In a 15-page write-up titled “Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, Has Crossed the Redline by Scandalizing the Administration of Justice and Must Be Impeached: By Martin A. B. Amidu”, Mr Amidu said that he got to know this from informants and intelligence.

“I do not know whether the Special Prosecutor knows that tongues have been wagging from informants and intelligence, and in the media. I got to know that in 2022 the OSP took possession of over 50 operational vehicles and cars, some with bullet proof fortifications, from the Tema port which were hidden under the basement of the OSP.

The OSP did not have an operational procurement entity at the time to enable the OSP to procure them from its moneys approved by Parliament; internally generated funds, and grants approved by the Minister responsible for Finance in consultation with the Attorney-General. My information is that two of the vehicles driven from the Tema port in convey got involved in an accident on the Tema Motorway in which one of the vehicles became a complete write-off,” he wrote.

Amidu also questioned why the public had not heard or seen the President, Attorney-General or any entity presenting these over 50 vehicles as gifts to the OSP as is the usual practice with donations in the form of grants. Amidu suggests that a media briefing by the OSP would be essential to address public concerns and dispel suspicions regarding potential violations of procurement laws in the acquisition of these vehicles.

“The public has not heard or seen the President, Attorney-General or any entity presenting these over 50 vehicles as gifts to the OSP as is the usual practice with donations in the form of grants. A media briefing by the OSP will assuage public suspicions of violations of the procurement law in their procurement.”

Amidu resigned from his position as the Special Prosecutor in November 2020, citing interference from the President and other government officials in his work. He also accused the President of being a “mother serpent of corruption” and of failing to protect the independence of the OSP.

The current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, was appointed in July 2021, after a vetting process by the Parliament. He has vowed to fight corruption without fear or favour and to uphold the mandate of the OSP. He has also denied any links or allegiance to any political party or person.

The OSP is an independent agency established in 2018 to investigate and prosecute cases of corruption involving public officers and politically exposed persons. It is also mandated to recover and manage the proceeds of corruption.

Special Prosecutor’s friend “from the mountains” taking bribes to influence cases – Amidu claims

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has been rocked by allegations of bribery, corruption and nepotism, according to a statement by the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu.

Amidu, in a 15-page statement sighted by The Independent Ghana, accuses Agyebeng of crossing constitutional boundaries and defying Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

In the statement, titled “Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, Has Crossed the Redline by Scandalizing the Administration of Justice and Must Be Impeached”, Amidu, who resigned from his position in November 2020, claimed that he received information and intelligence from informants and the media that a friend of the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, “from the mountains”, was demanding and receiving “bribes “consideration” from suspects under investigation by the OSP.

Amidu said that the friend of Agyebeng, whose identity was not disclosed, was allegedly using the bribes to tamper with the preliminary and full investigations of the cases, and to influence the decisions to continue or drop the cases, and to prosecute or acquit the suspects in court. He said that this was a serious breach of the mandate and integrity of the OSP, which is supposed to investigate and prosecute corruption and corruption-related offences.

“I do not know whether the Special Prosecutor knows that tongues have been wagging from informants and intelligence, and in the media that a friend of the Special Prosecutor from the mountains usually demands and receives considerations allegedly for the benefit of the OSP during the preliminary investigation and full investigations of case to tamper with the resultant threats to continue with the case and to prosecute the suspects in court,” he said.

Amidu also alleged that some of the suspects who were under investigation by the OSP were either relatives or friends or former clients of Agyebeng or his staff, and that some of the cases were suppressed or delayed because of these connections. He said that some of the suspects who could not afford to pay bribes to the OSP’s friend or staff had to suffer long periods of incarceration, such as one Issah Seidu, who was arrested in February this year for failing to

“Tongues have also been wagging that Issah Seidu had to suffer incarceration for long periods because his friends and relations at home and abroad could not raise considerations to meet demands from some staff of the OSP. Tongues are further wagging that there are completed investigation dockets in the OSP which are not moving forward because senior officials of the OSP, including its head, are either relatives or friends or former professional representatives of the suspects or have received considerations from the suspects,” he said.

Amidu said that he raised these issues because of the invitation thrown to the public by Agyebeng to support the OSP in its work. He said that he wanted the OSP to be transparent and accountable and to address the issues raised at a media briefing. He said that he wanted to protect the integrity and independence of the OSP from becoming a rogue institution.

  • Amidu drops bombshell on OSP: Exposes alleged bribery, corruption, and nepotism from secret sources

Amidu drops bombshell on OSP: Exposes alleged bribery, corruption, and nepotism from secret sources

Former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has exposed his successor, Kissi Agyebeng, for his alleged corruption and nepotism in a 15-page statement. Amidu, who resigned from his position in November 2020, accused Agyebeng of using his office to enrich himself and his friends, and of compromising the integrity and independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Amidu claims to have received information and intelligence from informants and the media that Agyebeng and his associates were demanding and receiving bribes from suspects under investigation by the OSP. He said that some of the suspects were either relatives or friends or former clients of Agyebeng or his staff, and that some of the cases were suppressed or delayed because of these connections.

“I do not know whether the Special Prosecutor knows that tongues have been wagging from informants and intelligence, and in the media that a friend of the Special Prosecutor from the mountains usually demands and receives considerations allegedly for the benefit of the OSP during the preliminary investigation and full investigations of case to tamper with the resultant threats to continue with the case and to prosecute the suspects in court. Tongues have also been wagging that Issah Seidu had to suffer incarceration for long periods because his friends and relations at home and abroad could not raise considerations to meet demands from some staff of the OSP. Tongues are further wagging that there are completed investigation dockets in the OSP which are not moving forward because senior officials of the OSP, including its head, are either relatives or friends or former professional representatives of the suspects or have received considerations from the suspects,” he said.

Amidu also questioned the procurement of over 50 vehicles and cars by the OSP, some of which were allegedly involved in an accident on the Tema Motorway. He said that the OSP did not have an operational procurement entity at the time and that the public did not hear or see any donation or grant from any source for these vehicles. He said that this raised suspicions of violations of the procurement law and the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) approval.

“I got to know that in 2022 the OSP took possession of over fifty operational vehicles and cars some with bullet proof fortifications from the Tema port which were hidden under the basement of the OSP. The OSP did not have an operational procurement entity at the time to enable the OSP to procure them from its moneys approved by Parliament; internally generated funds, and grants approved by the Minister responsible for Finance in consultation with the Attorney-General. My information is that two of the vehicles driven from the Tema Port in convey got involved in an accident on the Tema Motorway in which one of the vehicles became a complete write-off. The public has not heard or seen the President, Attorney-General or any entity presenting these over fifty vehicles as gifts to the OSP as is the usual practice with donations in the form of grants. A media briefing by the OSP will assuage public suspicions of violations of the procurement law in their procurement,” he said.

He also alleged that Agyebeng procured a fleet of vehicles, including pickups, from a car rental company belonging to his friend or associated with his friend, who is also an employee of the OSP, without going through a competitive bidding process and the PPA approval. He said that Agyebeng also rented or purchased a Prado four wheel drive for the Chief Accountant of the OSP, who is a signatory to the OSP accounts, without the same favour for other heads of departments.

“Still on procurement! Can the Special Prosecutor explain at a media briefing one of his first acts on his assumption of office – how he came to procure a fleet of vehicles including pickups from a car rental company allegedly belonging to his friend or associated with his friend who is alleged to be one of his employees now which he used as back-up for his security details without going through a competitive car rental company bidding process and the approval of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA)? What consideration informed the alleged immediate procurement by renting or purchasing a Prado four wheel drive without PPA approval for the Chief Accountant of the OSP who is a signatory to the OSP accounts only weeks after assuming office when other heads of departments went without the same favour? Remember that the OSP investigates and prosecutes procurement malpractices and the OSP’s press conference will instil confidence in the investigatory work of the OSP when the OSP investigates persons suspected of the commission of similar procurement offences,” he said.

Amidu also accused Agyebeng of travelling abroad frequently on the public purse without any written information to his deputy or the public. He said that Agyebeng even travelled with orderlies who had no security functions to perform on such trips, and that some of his friends accompanied him on some of these trips at their own expense.

“The Special Prosecutor should be addressing a press conferences on whether it is true that since his assumption of office he has spent more than a third of the year in 2021, 2022, and 2023 traveling abroad on the public purse without any written information to his deputy on his travelling abroad. Is it true that the Special Prosecutor even travels with orderlies who have no security functions to perform on such trips abroad?. Is it also true that certain friends of the Special Prosecutor accompany him on some of these trips at their own expense which can be detected from entries from the Ghana Immigration Service data base? By the way, the public wishes to know how many times the Special Prosecutor has traveled abroad on official duties since 9 August 2021, and if accompanied by whom; and whether the DSP was formally informed about these travels abroad. It may well be that when the Special Prosecutor becomes more transparent and accountable and addresses the issues raised at a media briefing, the suspicions of members of the public who may be tarnishing the integrity of the OSP may be put to rest. I raise them here because of the invitation thrown to the public by the Special Prosecutor and the fact that the policy of the OSP to be transparent with the public is a two way street of openness and accountability,” he said.

Amidu said that he raised these issues because of the invitation thrown to the public by Agyebeng to support the OSP in its work. He said that he wanted the OSP to be transparent and accountable and to address the issues raised at the media briefing. He said that he wanted to protect the integrity and independence of the OSP from becoming a rogue institution.

  • You are Akufo-Addo’s worst appointment ever! – Martin Amidu blasts Kissi Agyebeng over anti-judiciary remarks

You are Akufo-Addo’s worst appointment ever! – Martin Amidu blasts Kissi Agyebeng over anti-judiciary remarks

The former Special Prosecutor of Ghana, Martin Amidu, has slammed his successor, Kissi Agyebeng, as the ‘worst appointment’ ever made by President Nana Akufo-Addo over his remarks on the judiciary and the administration of justice.

Amidu, in a 15-page statement, accused Agyebeng of scandalizing the courts and violating the 1992 Constitution by holding a press conference on November 29, 2023, to express his concerns over what he said was an increasing trend of dismissive rulings in corruption cases he was pursuing.

Amidu said that Agyebeng crossed the red line of freedom of speech and expression by inciting the media and the public against the judicial branch of government and bringing the administration of justice into disrepute. He said that Agyebeng’s conduct was inconsistent with and contravened Article 127 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the independence of the judiciary from interference and direction of any person or authority.

He also said that Agyebeng failed in his constitutional duty to protect the independence, dignity, and effectiveness of the courts by scurrilously abusing and scandalizing the courts and the administration of justice. He said that Agyebeng’s intention was to coerce the judiciary, especially the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, to decide the cases in his favour.

Amidu said that Agyebeng’s behaviour was an impeachable offence under Section 15 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), which provides for the removal of the Special Prosecutor for stated misbehaviour, wilful violation of the Official Oath, and conduct that brings or is likely to bring the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into disrepute, ridicule, or contempt, and is prejudicial and inimical to the security of the state.

He urged patriotic citizens to invoke the provisions of Section 15(3) of Act 959 for the removal of the Special Prosecutor from office. He said that Ghana needed an independent and impartial judiciary, which is enshrined under the 1992 Constitution, and not a rogue Special Prosecutor who intentionally violates the Constitution and the law governing his tenure as a public officer.

He also described the appointment of Agyebeng by the President as one of the worst appointments of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He said that the President, who was himself a former Attorney General, knew that Agyebeng was the wrong choice for the position of the Special Prosecutor.

“Kissi Agyebeng is the worst appointment the President has ever been led into making and the President knows this as a former Attorney-General. I have no doubt that the President who was himself an Attorney-General would have initiated disciplinary proceedings against a DPP who committed the same violation of the 1992 Constitution during his tenure as the Attorney-General. The President is not, however, in a position to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the Special Prosecutor as he can only be removed from office under Section 15 of Act 959 by a process of impeachment,” he said.

Agyebeng, who held a press conference on November 29, 2023, to provide an update on his office’s investigations into corruption and corruption-related matters, addressed the media on various cases, including the one involving the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, who is accused of misappropriating funds meant for the construction of boreholes.

He also complained about some setbacks his office had encountered in court with regards to cases of corruption. He said that the court’s responsibility was to interpret the laws of Ghana and not to determine who should be investigated by the investigative bodies in the country, including the OSP. He said that it was totally wrong for the court to stop the investigations by the OSP, adding that it set a bad precedent for criminal investigation in the country.

He said that the court had granted two persons immunity from investigation for suspected corruption and corruption-related offences, and hence immunity from prosecution. He said that this decision was detrimental to the fight against corruption and could lead to even murderers seeking injunctions from being investigated.

He also highlighted the efforts that his office had made to improve its capacity and efficiency, such as recruiting more staff, moving to a new office, and acquiring more equipment. He said that his office was ready to branch out into the regions, starting from Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi. He said that his office was resolute as the flagship anti-corruption agency of the Republic in delivering on its mandate of investigating corruption and corruption-related offences, prosecuting suspected offenders, recovering assets and taking steps to prevent corruption.

He appealed to the public to support his office execute its mandate to the fullest.

SP Kissi Agyebeng must be sacked! – Martin Amidu ‘demands’

Former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has called for the impeachment of the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, following the latter’s recent press conference on November 29, 2023.

Amidu, in a 15-page statement sighted by The Independent Ghana, accuses Agyebeng of crossing constitutional boundaries and defying Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The statement, titled “Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, Has Crossed the Redline by Scandalizing the Administration of Justice and Must Be Impeached: By Martin A. B. Amidu,” points out that Agyebeng’s press conference aimed to incite the media and the public against the judicial branch, undermining the foundation of the constitution.

Amidu asserts, “The press conference called by the Special Prosecutor… crossed the red line of freedom of speech and expression to subvert the letter and spirit of the foundation of the 1992 Constitution.” He further accuses Agyebeng of abusing and scandalizing the court, violating the constitution, and failing in the duty to protect the independence, dignity, and effectiveness of the courts.

Amidu argues that Agyebeng, as a public officer, violated Article 127 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the independence of the judiciary. He highlights that Agyebeng’s conduct is inconsistent with the constitutional duty to protect the judiciary.

The statement contends that Agyebeng intentionally brought undue pressure on judges, violating the constitution and tarnishing the judiciary’s reputation. Amidu compares Agyebeng’s actions to what would warrant disciplinary proceedings for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Amidu concludes by urging patriotic citizens to invoke Section 15(3) of Act 959 for Agyebeng’s removal, stating, “There is no way Ghana is going to survive should Kissi Agyebeng succeed in using public funds and resources to incite the public to bring the image and integrity of the judiciary down.”

In response to Agyebeng’s concerns about the courts’ actions impacting Ghana’s fight against corruption, Amidu dismisses them as an attempt to instigate the public and media against the judiciary. He labels Agyebeng’s appointment by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as one of the president’s worst appointments.

Kissi Agyebeng’s press conference on November 29, 2023, addressed ongoing investigations, challenges faced by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and setbacks in court.

Agyebeng emphasized the court’s role in interpreting laws, criticized its interference with OSP investigations, and highlighted efforts to enhance the office’s capacity and efficiency.

He called for public support and emphasized the OSP’s commitment to combating corruption.

“We are the poorest people on the globe” – Akufo-Addo says begging for cheaper loans

President Nana Akufo-Addo has appealed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to help poor and vulnerable countries access cheaper loans to finance their climate action plans.

He made this call while speaking at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, where world leaders are meeting to discuss how to tackle the global climate crisis.

Akufo-Addo said that historically, countries like Ghana and other African nations have been paying more for borrowing money than those who have more resources and wealth.

He said that this situation was unfair and unsustainable, and that it could only be reversed if the IMF and the World Bank became catalysts for bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.

“Become bridges for countries like my own and the vulnerable countries to be able to access that … Historically the monies that we have access to have been the most expensive monies in the world, we are the poorest people on the people and when we borrow money we pay more for it than those who have money. That is a situation that can only be reversed if the World Bank and the IMF become this catalyst for being able to access the large monies that are out there. I think that for us for what we have seen in Ghana, it is something extremely important. That is one of the important decisions that have been taken by the …. (inaudible)” he said.

Akufo-Addo also highlighted the efforts that Ghana has made to implement its climate action plan, which includes increasing renewable energy, restoring degraded lands, and promoting green jobs. He said that Ghana was committed to achieving its targets under the Paris Agreement, but that it needed more support and resources from the international community.

COP28 is the 28th annual United Nations (UN) climate meeting where governments will discuss how to limit and prepare for future climate change. The summit is being held in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 30 November until 12 December 2023.
