“They will just steal your money, that is why they didn’t vote for me” – Kennedy Agyapong

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has reportedly blamed managers of businesses in Ghana for stealing from their employers and causing the collapse of many enterprises. He said that this was one of the reasons why he lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary on November 4, 2023.

Agyapong, who was one of the four aspirants vying for the NPP flagbearer position, came second with 71,996 votes, representing 37.41% of the total valid votes cast.

He was defeated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the race with 118,210 votes, representing 61.47%. The other two aspirants, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh, received 1,459 votes (0.76%) and 781 votes (0.38%) respectively.

Speaking to members of his support group, “We’re for Ken Worldwide”, during a meeting in the US city of Minnesota, Agyapong expressed his frustration with the state of affairs in Ghana and blamed greedy and selfish managers for ruining businesses and the economy. He said that foreign businesses were thriving in Ghana because the managers were not Ghanaians, while Ghanaian-owned businesses continued to suffer due to poor management.

“I’m sorry, but I will tell you the truth. They will just steal your money, that is why they didn’t vote for me because they knew I was going to crack the whip. We will not allow people to embezzle the state funds at the expense of the poor country.

“Unfortunately for them, they embezzle the funds and the only thing they know how to do is build a house. We have a huge chunk of the country is unemployed. I’m told several youths leave Ghana with the aim of getting Nursing jobs, but after paying the charges they can’t even get jobs. God has endowed our country and what we need is leaders who act and not leaders who speak just English and cannot put food on your table. I’m not giving up on my vision and all I’m telling you is to pray for me for long life,” he is quoted to have said.

Agyapong also said that he was not giving up on his ambition to help the youth with jobs and vowed to work on the mistakes he made during his campaign. He said that he would have retired completely, but he could not ignore the plight of the young men and women without jobs in the country.

“All I said and the mistakes I pointed out, I will work on them. I would have retired completely, but when I look at the young men and women without jobs in the country, I cannot give up. We will continue to fight. I’m not giving up,” he said.

Agyapong, who is a business mogul and a controversial politician, is known for his outspokenness and his philanthropic gestures. He has been an MP for Assin Central since 2008 and has been a vocal critic of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some members of his own party. He has also been involved in several legal battles over his comments on various issues.

  • Aisha Huang gets 4.5 years in prison, GHC48K fine for galamsey crimes

Aisha Huang gets 4.5 years in prison, GHC48K fine for galamsey crimes

Notorious Chinese national, En Huang, also known as Aisha Huang, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison for engaging in illegal mining and re-entering Ghana after being deported. She has also been fined GH¢48,000 and ordered to be deported again after serving her jail term.

The Criminal Division of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo, found her guilty on the charges of undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, the illegal employment of foreigners, and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

The court ruled that the state, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Yvonne Atokora Obuobisa, had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Aisha committed the crimes. The court also noted that Aisha contradicted herself in her defence statements in the trial, which lasted for one year and two months.

Aisha, who appeared calm and collected in the dock, wearing a nose mask and a white scarf, was convicted on her own plea on the charge of entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry. She had entered into a Plea Bargaining agreement with the State (office of the Attorney General) on May 3, this year.

During the plea of mitigation, Aisha’s counsel, Miracle Attachey, highlighted her time in custody since October 2022 and requested the court to impose a fine and deportation rather than a custodial sentence. He emphasized the potential financial burden on the state, especially the prison service.

In response, the DPP argued for a maximum custodial sentence and deportation, considering the impact of Aisha’s actions on affected families and witnesses. She stressed that the sentence should reflect the gravity of Aisha’s actions on the people of Ghana and the communities she had adversely affected.

Aisha Huang was accused of being in the thick of affairs of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, especially in the Ashanti Region. She was deported from the country in 2018, after the Attorney General decided to discontinue her trial in which she was accused of engaging in small-scale mining without a licence.

She was said to have snuck back into the country to allegedly engage in the same activities for which she was deported. In October 2022, the Attorney General then decided to prosecute her for the alleged crimes before her deportation and new ones committed since her entry back into the country.

It is the case of the prosecution that Aisha had an illegal mining concession at Bepotenten in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region and also operated a mining support services company; she had pleaded not guilty to undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, the illegal employment of foreigners, and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry. But on May 3, this year, Aisha pleaded guilty to entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry contrary to section 20(4) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am yesterday, as the suspect entered the Global Exchange Forex Bureau, pretending to conduct a transaction.

A CCTV video footage, shared by blogger @SIKAOFFICIAL1 on Twitter, depicts the suspect wearing a black shirt with the inscription “WAR..END” at the back. In the footage, he places his bag on a chair in the waiting area, draws a gun, and aims it behind the metal bars separating customers from patrons. Voices in the footage, believed to be the attendant on duty, narrate the incident, stating, “I sounded the alarm. The one inside is the one that is very loud. He didn’t know where I went, so that was when I started pressing the thing. He did not see where I went. You see that he is very calm and collected. That means he is a professional. He knows what he is doing. So they saw him coming out, but nobody was able to approach him.”

A male voice speculates in the video that the suspect may be a military man using a military weapon. “This man may be a military man; he is using a military weapon.” However, another male voice disagrees, saying, “No, he can’t be a military man.” These claims, although lacking evidence, are noteworthy observations by a potential witness in the case.

The police have not confirmed the identity or motive of the suspect, who is allegedly still at large. Forex bureau operators have been consistently advised by security services to remain vigilant in their dealings, given the attractiveness of their work to such incidents.

  • John Mahama’s running mate revealed

    John Mahama’s running mate revealed

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly decided to maintain Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 election.

This was revealed by a host of Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam Mpensenpensenmu, who claimed to have received the information from reliable sources close to Mahama.

The host, who interrupted the programme to announce the breaking news, said: “Listen and listen well, the breaking news coming in is that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has nominated Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. He has settled on the woman that she will be his running mate for the 2024 election. What I am telling you is from conversations had from the office, from the house, from the bedroom, from the car of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is that, he has settled on Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. In the next few days to come, he will introduce her as his running mate to the NDC.”

The news was also posted by a pro-NDC Twitter page, @AnnanPerry, who said that the information was yet to be confirmed by the flagbearer and the party.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, if confirmed, will be making a return as Mahama’s running mate. She became the first female running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when Mahama selected her as his partner for the 2020 election.

With an impressive political portfolio, Professor Opoku Agyemang has served in various capacities, contributing significantly to the educational sector.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang is a former Minister for Education and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast. She is a full professor of literature and a distinguished scholar.

She is widely respected for her achievements in the education sector and her contributions to the development of the country. She is also known for her calm and composed demeanour and her eloquence in public speaking. She has received several awards and honours, both locally and internationally, for her academic and professional excellence.

The choice, if proven could mean that the former president is confident in Prof Opoku-Agyemang abilities and believes that she can help him win back power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). It also implies that Mahama is committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the political sphere.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is yet to announce his running mate for the 2024 election. There are speculations that he may choose a candidate from the Ashanti region, which is considered a stronghold of the NPP. Some of the names that have been mentioned as potential candidates include Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, and Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff.

The selection of the running mates for both Mahama and Bawumia will have a significant impact on the outcome of the 2024 election, which is expected to be a keenly contested one.

The running mates will have to demonstrate their competence, charisma, and vision to the electorate and complement their flagbearers in their campaign strategies.

The 2024 election will also be a historic one, as it will be the first time that two former vice presidents will face each other in a presidential race.

“I thought I was perfect” – Kennedy Agyapong confesses fatal mistake in NPP flagbearer race

Kennedy Agyapong, former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shared insights into what he believes contributed to his defeat in the recent internal elections. The Member of Parliament for Assin Central acknowledged that placing excessive trust in others may have played a role in his loss.

“Maybe this is a preparation; I probably trusted people too much. So now I am learning, I thought I was perfect, but with this election, I know I am not. So, I am learning a lot,” Agyapong stated during a meeting with members of his support group, We’re for Ken Worldwide, in the US city of Minnesota.

Despite his defeat, Agyapong expressed gratitude to his supporters for their confidence in him, urging them not to lose hope. He dismissed speculations of an impending breakaway from the NPP, affirming his unwavering commitment to the party and his aspiration to lead the country.

Kennedy Agyapong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, lost the NPP’s November 4 presidential primary to Vice President Dr. Bawumia, who received 118,210 votes, representing 61.42% of the total valid votes.

Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes, representing 37.42% of the total valid votes. The other two aspirants, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh, secured 1,459 votes (0.76%) and 781 votes (0.41%) respectively.

  • “Is this what I bargained for?” – Supreme Court Justice laments public ignorance and mistrust of judiciary

“Is this what I bargained for?” – Supreme Court Justice laments public ignorance and mistrust of judiciary

A Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Yonny Kulendi, has underscored the importance of Ghanaians having a fair understanding of the justice delivery system, particularly the role of judges.

He expressed concern over the unfair treatment of judges by some members of the public due to a lack of education and understanding of the judicial system.

During an appearance on The Law programme on Joynews, Justice Kulendi highlighted the unfortunate castigation and suspicion directed at judges. He shared his realization of the challenges judges face in public perception since taking up the role.

“There’s been a rather unfortunate castigation, judgement, indictment of judges and the judiciary. I didn’t realise how judges are bastardised and spoken about in lowly terms and with suspicion until I became one, and I was like is that what I bargained for?” he stated.

He attributed this negative perception to a lack of education and information about the judicial system. According to Justice Kulendi, ignorance about the workings of the judiciary creates opportunities for mischief, manipulation of the system, and the promotion of an anti-court, anti-due process sentiment.

“Sometimes it is more often than not, it is all inflamed by misunderstanding; lack of information, lack of education on what we do, how we do it, what the rules that they the people have provided for us allow us to do, etcetera. And where there is ignorance, there is a huge potential for those who are up to mischief to manipulate the system, to incite the people and position the people to have an anti-court, anti-due process, anti-judiciary process,” he noted.

Justice Kulendi, who was nominated and appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana in 2020 by President Akufo-Addo, is the first Ghanaian from the Upper West Region to serve in Ghana’s highest court of the land. He has several years of private legal practice and is regarded as one of the finest legal minds in the country.

He urged the public to appreciate the work of the judges and the judiciary, and to respect the rule of law and due process. He also called for more public education and awareness on the justice delivery system, and the role of the judges in ensuring justice for all.

‘Side Chick” Deborah Seyram Adablah ordered to pay GHC10K to estranged ‘sugar daddy’ Nimako

The High Court in Accra has ruled against Deborah Seyram Adablah, who filed a case against a former Chief Finance Officer of a bank, Ernest Kwasi Nimako, accusing him of sexual harassment.

In the ruling on November 28, presided over by Justice John Bosco Nabarese, the court dismissed Adablah’s case, stating that although the relationship between the two was deemed immoral and against societal norms, there was no reasonable cause of action based on the filed writ.

The court expressed that the foundation of the relationship was not one that should be endorsed judicially, stating, “You cannot recover the price of something you have committed into an immoral act.”

As a result, the plaintiff, Deborah Seyram Adablah, has been ordered to pay a cost of GH¢10,000.

This decision follows an application by the former Chief Finance Officer urging the court to strike Adablah’s case.

Adablah’s initial suit, filed on January 23, 2023, alleged that Nimako, whom she referred to as her “sugar daddy,” made various promises to her, including buying her a car, covering accommodation for three years, providing a monthly stipend of GH¢3,000, marrying her after divorcing his wife, and offering a lump sum to start a business.

The plaintiff claimed that despite the car being initially registered in Nimako’s name, he later took it back after just a year. Additionally, she asserted that Nimako paid for only one year of accommodation, despite promising three years.

Adablah sought court orders for the transfer of the car’s title into her name, the return of the car, payment of the lump sum for starting a business, payment of the outstanding two years’ accommodation, and covering medical expenses due to the side effects of a family planning treatment recommended by Nimako.

This is not your Ministry, go and sit down! – Bagbin ‘barks at’ Ursula in parliament

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has scolded the Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, for interrupting a debate on a yet-to-be-laid Legislative Instrument (L.I.) in the House.

The L.I., which seeks to restrict the importation of strategic products into the country, sparked a heated discussion among the MPs on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

The Minister, who is also the MP for Ablekuma West, questioned the relevance of the debate, saying that she had no idea what the MPs were debating, since the L.I. had not been officially laid before the House.

She remarked, “Mr. Speaker, I believe that the L.I. has not been laid. So I have no idea what they are debating in this House today. There is nothing before the House. So, as you indicated to the minister that we are not yet there, I was of the opinion that you would tell my colleagues on the other side that there is nothing before us.”

The Speaker, however, was not pleased with her comments and asked her if she had been present from the very beginning of the proceedings. He also asked her if she listened to herself when she was talking.

“Hon. Minister, were you here from the very beginning?” to which Ursula Owusu-Ekuful responded, “No, I have been here since morning, even before the prayer,” he reportedly asked.

The Speaker further probed, “Then why did you say no? Do you really listen to yourself when you are talking?”

    “Yes, I do,” she responded.

“The Speaker interjected again, saying, “If you were here from the very beginning, and I asked if you were here from the very first beginning, you said no. Then you continue, and now you are telling me you were here even before I entered. So, it meant you were not listening to yourself,” he said.

Defending herself, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated, “This is the first time I am appearing in the House this week. I have been here since the beginning of proceedings today, and I do listen to myself very carefully.”

Expressing his dissatisfaction, the Speaker retorted, “I don’t think so,” and Ursula responded by stating he was entitled to his opinion.

The Speaker then ordered her to resume her seat, emphasizing, “Hon. Minister, this is not the Ministry of Communication; this is parliament. Resume your seat!”

Later, the Speaker clarified that the issue was brought to his attention by the Minister of Trade, Kobina Tahir Hammond. Despite being persuaded by KT Hammond, he sought input from the House before officially allowing the instrument to be laid, leading to the ongoing debate on the L.I.

“Do you really listen to yourself when you are talking?” – Speaker Bagbin and Ursula ‘face off’ in parliament

A heated exchange occurred in Ghana’s Parliament as Speaker Alban Bagbin confronted Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, during a debate on a yet-to-be-laid Legislative Instrument (L.I.).

The parliamentary discussion revolved around the proposed restriction of the importation of strategic products into the country, with active participation from both the Minority and the minister.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful caught the Speaker’s attention by questioning the legitimacy of discussing the L.I. when it had not been officially laid before the House.

She expressed her confusion, stating, “Mr. Speaker, I believe that the L.I. has not been laid. So I have no idea what they are debating in this House today. There is nothing before the House.”

The Speaker interjected, questioning Ursula’s presence from the beginning of the session. Ursula responded that she had been present since the morning, even before the prayer.

The Speaker challenged her, highlighting a contradiction in her response and questioning, “Do you really listen to yourself when you are talking?”

Ursula affirmed that she indeed listens to herself, leading to further contention. The Speaker expressed doubt, stating, “I don’t think so,” and Ursula defended herself, asserting that she had been present since the beginning of the proceedings.

“This is the first time I am appearing in the House this week. I have been here since the beginning of proceedings today, and I do listen to myself very carefully,” she is reported to have said.

In response, the Speaker ordered Ursula to resume her seat, emphasizing, “Hon. Minister, this is not the Ministry of Communication; this is parliament. Resume your seat!”

Later, Speaker Bagbin clarified that he raised the issue on the floor after Minister of Trade, Kobina Tahir Hammond, brought it to his attention.

Despite initial conviction by KT Hammond, Bagbin sought the opinion of the House before allowing the instrument to be laid, resulting in the ongoing debate on the L.I.

  • First Atlantic ‘sugar daddy’ Nimako wins court case against ‘side chick’ who sued him for breach of contract

First Atlantic ‘sugar daddy’ Nimako wins court case against ‘side chick’ who sued him for breach of contract

An Accra High Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a woman who claimed that her ‘sugar daddy’ failed to fulfill his promises to her and later dumped her.

The woman, Deborah Seyram Adablah, had sued Ernest Kwasi Nimako, whom she referred to as her ‘sugar daddy’, for breach of contract.

She alleged that Nimako agreed to buy her a car, pay for her accommodation for three years, provide a monthly stipend of GH¢3,000, marry her after divorcing his wife, and offer a lump sum to start a business.

However, she said that Nimako reneged on his promises and took back the car he had bought for her after just a year. He also paid for only one year of accommodation, despite promising to cover three years.

She was seeking an order from the court to compel Nimako to transfer the title of the car into her name, and also give her back the car.

She also asked the court to order Nimako to pay her the lump sum to enable her to start a business, the outstanding two years’ accommodation, and her medical expenses as a result of a side effect of a family planning treatment he told her to do.

The court however sided with lawyers for Kwasi Nimako, arguing that the case lacked merit. The legal representatives from Kulendi@Law contended that Adablah failed to disclose a reasonable cause of action and that any contract she sought to enforce was not legally binding.

The court concurred with Nimako’s counsels, stating that no substantive issue was raised by Adablah in her suit.

The case has generated a lot of public interest and debate on social media, with some people condemning the actions of both parties, while others sympathising with the woman or the man.

  • Bawumia’s running mate will “definitely” come from the Ashanti Region – Kate Gyamfua

Bawumia’s running mate will “definitely” come from the Ashanti Region – Kate Gyamfua

National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has disclosed crucial details about the party’s choice for Dr. Mahamdu Bawumia’s running mate in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In an interview on Peace FM on November 22, 2023, Gyamfua stated that the party has already reached a decision on the potential running mate and has conveyed their choice to Vice President Bawumia.

She revealed that the chosen individual must be a male or female Member of Parliament (MP) from the Ashanti region.

When questioned about the exclusivity of this requirement, Gyamfua asserted that the selected running mate is already aware of their candidacy.

“The person knows who they are. If male, he knows himself; if female, the same way. The flagbearer will appoint his own running mate, and he knows who we want so he will do justice accordingly. We have communicated to him who we want to be the running mate. The person should be an MP. And will they come from the Ashanti region,” she said.

This revelation provides clarity on the party’s considerations for the crucial role of Bawumia’s running mate, narrowing the field to male MPs from the Ashanti region and offering insight into the party’s strategic direction leading up to the 2024 elections.

Following the November 7 presidential primaries, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo handed over the NPP’s leadership to Bawumia, who is now tasked with selecting his running mate for the 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate for the 2024 elections.

Names that have come under consideration as potential running mates include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communication, Adutwum Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Deputy Finance Minister, and Ejisu MP John Kumah, Mathew Opoku Prempeh Energy Minister among others.

  • You do not speak for us! – Berekum chief blasts Dormaahene

You do not speak for us! – Berekum chief blasts Dormaahene

The Berekum Kontihene, Osahene Asomah Agyeman Sabi II, has hit back at the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, for making false claims about the processes leading to the enstoolment of a new Berekumhene.

The Kontihene, who is a spokesperson for the Berekum Traditional Council, said that the Dormaahene had no authority or knowledge to speak for the Berekum people on matters of succession and chieftaincy.

He also defended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, from the accusations of the Dormaahene, who alleged that the Asantehene had locked out other royal gates in favour of the current royal family in Berekum.

The Kontihene, who was speaking in an interview posted on Facebook, explained that contrary to the Dormaahene’s claim that the Berekum Traditional Area has four royal houses, the truth per a Supreme Court ruling was that it is a single royal house.

He said that the Asantehene did not alter any ruling house arrangement, but rather followed the Supreme Court ruling, which is the existing policy.

“Asantehene did not alter any ruling house arrangement, it was a Supreme Court ruling which is the existing policy. So, if Dormaahene says something like that, he is wrong, Otumfuo has done nothing. Keep his name out.

“On Berekum matters, Dormaahene is for all intents and purposes not our spokesman. If he doesn’t have the facts, there is no need sitting on social media and peddling claims…that is why I want to absolve Otumfuo,” he stated.

The Kontihene also emphasised that the Berekum people owe allegiance to the Golden Stool, and that the Asantehene came to dignify Berekum by attending the funeral of the late Berekumhene, Nana Yiadom Boakye II, who died in 2020.

“Otumfuo came to dignify Berekum because if you can recall, all Berekum Paramount Chiefs went to swear oath of allegiance at Manhyia Palace. Nana Boakye did, the same with Dasebre somewhere in 2002. We owe allegiance to the Golden Stool, so it is not for Dormaahene to speak for us,” he reportedly noted.

The Dormaahene, who is also the President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, was stopped by a Sunyani High Court from attending the funeral of the late Berekumhene last week, following a petition by some aggrieved parties.

The Dormaahene, after he was barred from the funeral, lamented the development and stressed that he was the right person to honour the late chief.

The incident was the latest leg of a public spat between the Dormaahene and Asantehene over the status and influence of the Ashanti overlord outside of his immediate jurisdiction.

Berekum Kontihene, Osahene Asomah Agyeman Sabi II, has responded to Dormaahene’s recent claims regarding the enstoolment process of a new Berekumhene, urging him to refrain from making inaccurate statements.

In an interview posted on Facebook, Kontihene clarified Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II’s assertion that Berekum has four royal houses, stating that, according to a Supreme Court ruling, there is only a single royal house.

Responding to Dormaahene’s claims that Asantehene had favored a particular royal family in the succession matter, Kontihene countered, “Asantehene did not alter any ruling house arrangement; it was a Supreme Court ruling which is the existing policy. So, if Dormaahene says something like that, he is wrong, Otumfuo has done nothing. Keep his name out.”

Emphasizing Dormaahene’s role in Berekum matters, Kontihene asserted, “Dormaahene is, for all intents and purposes, not our spokesman. If he doesn’t have the facts, there is no need to sit on social media and peddle claims…that is why I want to absolve Otumfuo.”

He added, “Otumfuo came to dignify Berekum because if you can recall, all Berekum Paramount Chiefs went to swear an oath of allegiance at Manhyia Palace. We owe allegiance to the Golden Stool, so it is not for Dormaahene to speak for us.”

In response to his ban from attending the late Paramount Chief’s funeral, Dormaahene lamented the situation, emphasizing his rightful role in honoring the late chief. He expressed the pain of the incident and hinted at the potential importance he might hold for Berekum in the future.

This exchange marks the latest chapter in an ongoing public dispute between Dormaahene and Asantehene concerning the influence of the Ashanti overlord outside of his immediate jurisdiction.

Man arrested for killing stolen dog to sell as cow meat in Accra

A man in his 30s has been apprehended in East Legon Hills, Accra, after allegedly killing a dog with the intention of reportedly selling it to Khebab vendors as cow or goat meat.

The incident occurred on Sunday, November 26, 2023, and was captured in a viral video showing the man seated on the ground with the deceased dog beside him. In the video, residents could be heard expressing disapproval of his actions.

One of the onlookers voiced concern about the deceased dog being used for Khebab, a popular roasted meat meal. He lamented that unsuspecting customers might unknowingly consume dog meat, assuming it to be the customary cow or goat meat used in the delicacy.

“This Sunday morning, you have come to kill someone’s dog, and you are going to sell it to an ‘abochi’. God is going to punish this man. Today is 26th November. You have come to kill a dog which you are going to sell to a meat sealer, and we would also go there and happily buy it,” he stated in Twi.

The man, caught red-handed in this act, now faces legal consequences for his alleged involvement in the illegal slaughter and intended sale of dog meat.

The incident has sparked concerns about the potential health risks and ethical considerations associated with such practices in the local food industry.

It is not clear how the man obtained the dog or how many dogs he may have killed and sold before.

Dog meat is not a common part of meals in Ghana, and many people consider it as taboo or unhygienic.

However, some people in certain parts of the country, especially in the northern regions, consume dog meat for various reasons, such as cultural, medicinal, or religious beliefs.

Speaker of Parliament Bagbin crowned as Nana Adasuoko I

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been honoured with a traditional title by the Suma Traditional Council in the Bono Region of Ghana. He is now known as Nana Adasuoko I, which means the one who brings people together.

The enstoolment ceremony took place at Suma-Ahenkro, as part of the 2023 Annual Suma Royal Retreat and Crusade of the Traditional and Local Councils of Churches. The event was characterised by pomp and pageantry, with cultural displays and prayers for the nation.

The Paramount Chief and President of the Suma Traditional Area, Odeneho Dr. Affram Brempong III, said that Bagbin was chosen for his sterling leadership and advocacy for the preservation of culture, values, traditions, and customs of the people of Ghana.

After the enstoolment, Alban Bagbin, now Nana Adasuoko I, addressed the gathering. He urged chiefs across the country to actively engage in national conversations, including politics.

While emphasizing the importance of avoiding excessive political involvement, he stressed the need for chiefs to speak out on matters critical to national development, particularly as the country approaches an election year.

“As we are at the threshold of an election year, I will encourage Nananom not to remain quiet when it comes to the political conversations that are critical to our democratic development, and our peace and security. We must all help to shape the political discourse of this country to ensure that it feeds into the hopes and aspirations of our people,” he said.

NPP has taken Ghana beyond where we found it – Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has emphatically stated that Ghana has been rescued by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Acknowledging economic challenges, Dr. Hamid maintained that the government has propelled the country beyond its previous state under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Accra-based Joy News, he said, “Yes, we have rescued this country. The economy is challenged without a doubt, but I’m saying to you Emefa that we have taken this country beyond where we found it.”

Dr. Hamid, who previously served as a spokesperson for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before the 2016 elections, recalled his earlier stance on the need for rescuing the country from corruption under the NDC.

He concluded that the government has indeed delivered on its promise to rescue Ghana and is prepared to debate its achievements in the upcoming election year.

As Ghana approaches elections, Dr. Hamid expressed confidence in addressing concerns through debate. When prompted to provide an instance where the NPP government has “rescued” Ghana, he highlighted the impact of government policies on the future.

He stated, “We have saved over 400,000 young people who but for our policy would be languishing on the streets of our country, who are today in Universities and pursuing proper careers for their lives.”

Tying this to the importance of human resource mobilisation and efficiency, Dr. Hamid drew parallels with successful countries like Japan and Singapore. He argued that the government’s efforts in rescuing and empowering the youth contribute significantly to the progress and prosperity of the nation.

  • Bawumia doesn’t have to pick a running mate from Ashanti – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has downplayed the necessity of selecting a running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, from the Ashanti Region. He said that there are other Akan-speaking regions in the country that can be considered for the position.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who himself is from the Ashanti Region, stated that there are other Akan-speaking regions in the country that could be considered for the position.

During an interview on the Hot Issues programme on TV3 with Kemmini Amanor, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu dismissed the notion that not selecting a running mate from the Ashanti Region would have catastrophic consequences for the party. In his words, “I am not too sure the world will come to an end.”

While acknowledging the strategic importance of the decision, the Suame Member of Parliament suggested that the chosen candidate should complement Dr. Bawumia’s background, even if not from the Ashanti Region.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted the flexibility in considering various Akan areas for the selection, stating, “We know the dynamics so let the people decide. I am from the Ashanti Region, it is the case that Dr. Bawumia is from the North, and maybe his own ethnic background is not one place that we have major votes from or huge numbers from, we will need, maybe, a region that will support or complement him well, that is why people are coming up with that suggestion to select an Akan. I am saying that it is justifiable but there are other Akan areas that we could also look at.”

With Dr. Bawumia’s background from the northern part of the country, there has been a strong advocacy for the ruling party to consider the NPP’s Ashanti Region stronghold in the selection of his running mate.

  • Akufo-Addo is a ‘yentie obiaa’ leader, unlike Kufuor and Kyerematen – Nana Ohene Ntow

Akufo-Addo is a ‘yentie obiaa’ leader, unlike Kufuor and Kyerematen – Nana Ohene Ntow

A spokesperson for independent presidential candidate, Alan Kyerematen, Nana Ohene Ntow, has openly criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being an unresponsive leader within the ruling party.

Nana Ohene Ntow, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), highlighted a significant distinction between the president and other influential party figures, specifically in their approach to listening to the concerns of party members.

“Recently, NPP MPs, the majority in parliament, urged the president to dismiss Ken Ofori-Atta due to poor performance. President Akufo-Addo asserted his authority, stating that Ofori-Atta would remain in his position, and indeed, he has stayed on,” said Nana Ohene Ntow.

Nana Ohene Ntow emphasized that while leaders like Alan Kyerematen and former President Kufuor pay heed to the party’s members, President Akufo-Addo adopts an obstinate stance. “When party members express concerns, his response is ‘yentie obiaa’ (I won’t listen to anyone),” he stated during an interview on Neat FM.

The NPP recently announced the expulsion of Nana Ohene Ntow and three other prominent members for endorsing Alan Kyerematen’s independent candidacy.

Despite this, Nana Ohene Ntow attributes their departure to President Akufo-Addo’s autocratic tendencies, particularly his backing of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer.

This criticism from within the party sheds light on internal dynamics, raising questions about Akufo-Addo’s leadership style and its impact on party unity.

Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, announced his independent bid for the presidency in October 2023.

He said that he was dissatisfied with the process and the outcome of the primaries, and that he had the support of many NPP members and sympathisers who wanted him to contest.

He also said that he was ready to work with other political parties and civil society groups who share his vision for Ghana.

“Excessive show of counterfeit humility”- Bawumia’s prostration before northern chief sparks mixed reactions

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent campaign tour in the North has ignited discussions on social media as he laid prostrate on the floor at the palace of The Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bi-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.

This unusual display has left many questioning the authenticity of his actions.

During his visit, part of his engagement with traditional leaders involved a distinct moment at the Yagbonwura’s residence, where Bawumia, regardless of his white attire, lay face down before the chief and onlookers.

Subsequently, he was conferred with the title of Konukolewura, translating to Chief of Unity.

Despite his reputation for humility and down-to-earth qualities, emphasized by his party members and campaign team, this specific gesture has sparked diverse opinions, with some suggesting that he might be overemphasizing humility.

Social media comments captured by @larrylartey on X reflect various perspectives:

    • @ImoroNuhu1: “He did this at the Yagbonwura palace. That’s how Gonja’s greet the overlord of the kingdom. Politics aside, it’s not out of order unless you are not familiar with the traditions of the Gonja.”
    • @keembobo: “Bawumia was enskined on that day, so traditionally he becomes a royal and had to do as custom demands.”
    • @SteveJo09022767: “This is what Bawumia has reduced himself to. The new Mr. Ibu of Ghana 😂😂”
    • @MusahShiraz1: “The desperation speaks volumes.”
    • @adjeistephen2: “Madness 😠 at its best.”
    • @GhJingoist: “Excessive show of counterfeit humility. Or time-dependent show of humility.”

Some NPP MPs, ministers very wicked, stingy – Kate Gyamfua reveals

The National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has slammed some of the ministers and MPs of her party for being selfish and stingy. She accused them of not sharing their wealth with the people who voted for them and neglecting their constituencies.

She made this remark during an interview on on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on November 23, 2024, where she touched on President Akufo-Addo’s leadership amidst challenging economic conditions, and expressed her belief that his presidency was divinely ordained.

According to her, it was god’s way of preventing Ghana from facing worse circumstances under opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader John Mahama.

“I always say that it was by divine orchestration that Akufo-Addo was leading Ghana at a time when the world has been hit with harsh economic conditions of which Ghana wasn’t left out, Mahama would have eloped.Where is the brains to plan? Where would he have been?Where? How would he have been able to pay workers?” she said.

In light of these sentiments, she directed her comments towards NPP MPs, urging them to assume responsibility for alleviating the hardships faced by citizens.

“How much at all would you give people? But they will never, deliberately being cruel to people. Due to this, some of them can’t even visit their constituencies. There are even people who have been appointed by the NPP government, but people from his hometown are not even privy to this,” Gyamfua observed.

According to her some of these MPs supposedly keep their wealth to themselves and even fail to reveals themselves or what positions they hold to leaders in their constituencies or religious organisations in order to avoid having to dish some monies out.

She claimed that some MPs hoard their wealth, concealing their positions and identities to avoid financial obligations to their constituencies and religious groups.

“Even when they do visit, they wouldn’t attend church and greet their pastors to introduce themselves in that regard, where they can offer to throw a party for the Women’s Fellowship or even Sunday School as Christmas approaches,” Gyamfua remarked, describing such a posture as wicked.

“Wickedness! Most of the MPs are very wicked. Some are good, others too… Those who know themselves do; I don’t want to mention names. I tell you,” she added.

Over 300,000 maggot-infested bags of rice distributed to Senior High Schools – MP reveals

Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, who serves as the minority spokesperson on education, has made shocking claims during the 2024 budget statement on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

According to Nortsu-Kotoe, over 300,000 bags of maggot-infested rice, known as ‘Lamens’ from India, have been distributed to Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country.

The MP alleged that the rice, which had been imported in 2021, was stored in a warehouse due to the importer’s failure to pay the required duty.

Despite the apparent danger it posed to health, Nortsu-Kotoe claimed that the rice was later distributed to schools.

“Mr. Speaker, as we speak now, there is some rice in the system that has been supplied to Senior High Schools. They call it Lamens, from India. This rice, Mr. Speaker, is maggot-infested,” he asserted.

He went on to explain the concerning timeline, stating, “When it was imported in 2021, the suppliers or the importers did not pay for the duty on the rice, so it had to be stored in a warehouse. Now they have nicodemusly gone to remove this rice and have distributed them to the Senior High Schools, about 5,000 metric tonnes, which is over 300,000 bags of rice.”

“The rice is about to expire. A few weeks to expire, they have now distributed them to the Senior High Schools in the country and that is what they are feeding our children with…. Mr. Speaker, this is so serious that we must look at it carefully. Our children, if we don’t take care, when they come back home, they are going to suffer diarrhea and other forms of diseases,” he added.

The Free SHS policy, which was implemented by the government in 2017, aims to provide free education to all eligible students in public Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The policy covers the cost of tuition, textbooks, meals, boarding, and other fees. The policy has been praised for increasing access and enrolment to secondary education, but also criticized for its challenges in funding, quality, and infrastructure.

The success of the first day of the hostage release is being closely emphasized, with the belief that it will contribute to the smooth progression of the releases in the coming days. It is noted that Americans are not expected to be among the first 13 hostages released.

In a separate development, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has received confirmation of the release of 12 Thai nationals from Gaza.

Thavisin stated, “I have received confirmation from our national security team and ministry of foreign affairs that 12 Thai hostages have been released. Our RTE staffs are on their way to receive them,” referring to the Royal Thai Embassy.

“We should know more about their names and details, please stay tuned,” Thavisin added.

This follows an earlier announcement by Egypt that the 12 Thai nationals, held by Hamas, would be released, in addition to the 13 hostages scheduled for release on Friday.

The Rafah border between Egypt and Gaza is being prepared to receive the hostages released by Hamas, in readiness for their transfer to the Israeli side, as stated by Diaa Rashwan, the head of the state information service.

In the midst of controversy surrounding the attendance of the Asantehene and Dormaahene at the funeral of the late Berekumhene, Okyeame Ofori, a linguist from the Berekum Traditional Council, has provided clarity on the identity of the people of Berekum.

In an interview on Angel TV on Thursday, November 23, 2024, at the funeral grounds, Okyeame Ofori affirmed that, despite residing in the Bono land, the people of Berekum consider themselves Ashantis.

“The people of Berekum are Ashantis… It is 100% right for a person to say I come from Berekum in the Bono Region, I’m an Ashanti,” he stated in Twi.

Okyeame Ofori elaborated on the cultural aspect, mentioning the significance of “mentia,” which indicates one’s origin. He pointed out that the Berekumhene’s “mentia” is aligned with Ashanti heritage, as evidenced by his proclamation, ‘Berekum, Berekum, Berekum, we are true Ashantis.’

While the Berekum Traditional Council is part of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Okyeame Ofori clarified that they operate under the Asanteman Council. He emphasized that the loyalty of the people of Berekum lies with Asanteman and its overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

  • “We are tired of you! – Kate Gyamfua ‘fumes’, spills NPP secrets

“We are tired of you! – Kate Gyamfua ‘fumes’, spills NPP secrets

In the heated race for power following the 2024 general elections, political contenders are pulling out all the stops to secure their positions.

Amidst this fervour, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been making waves with a series of media engagements, and during one such occasion, the NPP’s National Women’s Organizer, Kate Gyamfua, dropped some intriguing insights about the party’s flagbearer.

Addressing the listeners of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on November 23, 2024, Gyamfua delved into the persona of Dr. Bawumia, highlighting his distinct ability to garner support independently of the presidency.

“People have the perception that Bawumia was voted for during the flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing. I want to state that anyone asserting such is a liar because the only support I can confirm from the presidency for Bawumia’s victory is 15%,” she asserted, revealing a side of the political landscape that might not be well-known.

Gyamfua went on to shed light on instances where Vice President Bawumia stood firmly against certain policies, illustrating his autonomy in decision-making. The E-levy, a contentious issue, saw Bawumia’s opposition on grounds that it would adversely affect the poor.

Gyamfua boldly asserted, “If any NPP member wants to challenge this, they should come forward. Bawumia and Ursula Owusu fought against the E-levy during a meeting, stating that it was not important, so they should look elsewhere. It is true that it has added no value to our economy.”

The revelation continued with Bawumia’s opposition to seeking financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), suggesting internal mobilization of funds. Gyamfua claimed, “‘We even clapped for him, but the President said he didn’t want things to get out of hand before running into the IMF.”

Challenging her fellow party members to dispute these claims, Gyamfua asserted, “Let someone come and challenge it. This issue should not have been raised, but if they call me for a meeting too, I will reiterate and affirm that yes, I have said it. We are tired.”

The unfolding dynamics within the NPP add an intriguing layer to the political landscape as Ghana gears up for the 2024 general elections. Bawumia’s victory in the party’s flagbearer race positions him as a formidable contender, set to face off against prominent opponents, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen. As the political stage heats up, all eyes are on the unfolding narratives within the NPP.

Dr Bawumia only had 15% of support from the Presidency – NPP Women’s organiser alleges

In a recent interview on Accra-based Peace FM, the National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has made a striking revelation regarding Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumias level of support from the Presidency during the flagbearer elections.

According to her, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not win the party’s flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing.

“People have the perception that Bawumia was voted for during the flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing. I want to state that anyone asserting such is a liar because the only support I can confirm from the presidency for Bawumia’s victory is 15%,” Gyamfua boldly claimed.

“I am the one telling you, and let someone come and challenge it. This issue should not have been raised, but if they call me, I will go and defend it because I am tired,” she added.

Bawumia emerged as the flagbearer of the NPP following the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, November 4, 2023. He secured a significant victory, garnering 118,210 votes, which represents 61.43% of the total votes.

His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, secured 71,996 votes, accounting for 37.41% of the vote share. The other two contestants, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo, received 1,449 votes (0.75%) and 781 votes (0.41%), respectively.

Bawumia’s victory in the flagbearer race paves the way for him to lead the NPP in the forthcoming 2024 general elections. He will face prominent opponents, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen in the 2024 elections.

This electoral outcome sets the stage for a competitive political landscape as the various candidates vie for the presidency.

  • Why Akufo-Addo’s cabinet members clapped for Bawumia

Why Akufo-Addo’s cabinet members clapped for Bawumia

Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, received a resounding applause by some members of the current administration for opposing the government’s decision to seek a $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during deliberations, according to the National Women’s Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua.

Dr Bawumia reported argument that the country has the capacity to mobilize revenue internally, did not have to be indebted to the IMF, resonated with several present at the said meeting, who ended up giving him a clap offering as approval.

Despite the positive response the Vice President’s position gathered within the caucus, the president according to Madam Gyamfua went ahead anyway to sign Ghana up for an IMF bailout.

“When we were going into the IMF, Bawumia also opposed it during a meeting. He argued that the amount Ghana is seeking from the IMF could be mobilized internally because he believes people have such an amount here, and they should hold on to it. We even clapped for him, but the President said he didn’t want things to get out of hand before running into the IMF,” she said.

Gyamfua made these revelations in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on November 23, 2024, where she also defended Bawumia’s victory in the NPP flagbearer elections.

Gyamfua disclosed that Vice President Bawumia once again stood in opposition during discussions about introducing an electronic transaction tax in Ghana.

Gyamfua claimed that Dr Bawumia, along with the Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, vehemently opposed the implementation of the E-Levy during the meeting.

“When the E-levy was being introduced, two members opposed it. Bawumia said that the E-levy was going to affect the poor, so why would they tax their money? He really fought against it; he never agreed to the E-levy. “I am the one telling you, and if any NPP member wants to challenge this, they should come forward. Bawumia and Ursula Owusu fought against the E-levy during a meeting, stating that it was not important, so they should look elsewhere. It is true that it has added no value to our economy,” she said.

She made these points while stressing on Dr Bawumia good intensions and competencies and the need to vote him in as the next president.

She touted that Bawumia did not win the NPP flagbearer race solely because of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s backing, contrary to what many believe. Instead, he did so because of his own merits and popularity.

“People have the perception that Bawumia was voted for during the flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing. I want to state that anyone asserting such is a liar because the only support I can confirm from the presidency for Bawumia’s victory is 15%,” she noted.

Information reaching us is that there was a hot exchange between Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta

While Dr Bawumia was vehemently opposed to passage of the e-levy, the finance Minster maintained the passage of the tax will solve the country’s problems.

The National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua has give more credence to this report in a recent interview she granted on Accra-based Peace FM.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on November 23, 2024, Gyamfua claimed that Bawumia, along with the Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, opposed the implementation of the E-Levy during a party caucus meeting.

Gyamfua made these revelations in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on November 23, 2024, where she also defended Bawumia’s victory in the NPP flagbearer elections.

She disclosed that Vice President Bawumia once again stood in opposition during discussions about introducing an electronic transaction tax in Ghana.

“Bribii be si, omoo popo” – Dormahene’s chants over Berekum funeral snub

Amidst escalating tensions and a longstanding feud between the Dormaa Traditional Area and the Asantehene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Nana Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of Dormaa, found himself barred from attending the funeral of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II.

The contentious incident unfolded as an alleged court decision, initiated by certain Berekum chiefs, prevented the Dormaahene’s participation.

Expressing his sentiments after the exclusion, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Nana Agyemang Badu II employed the words “Biribii be si” and “omoo popo,” which translate to “something is going to happen” and “they are trembling, they are trembling,” respectively.

In a new video addressing his subjects, the Dormaahene expressed gratitude for the turn of events on November 23, acknowledging that the situation could have escalated negatively.

He stated, “I thank God for what happened. I thank Him because if you see how they were prepared, the truth is, today wouldn’t have ended well. One thing I didn’t hear this time around is the popular song ‘biribii be si’ (to wit, something is going to happen). And not just that, ‘omoo popo’ to wit ‘they are trembling, they are trembling, he said amid laughter.

This recent development adds fuel to an already simmering conflict between the Dormaa Traditional Area and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The history of brewing tensions traces back to several attacks launched by the Dormaahene against Otumfuo, further straining the relations between the two traditional authorities.

  • Why World Bank invested about $17m in Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building

Why World Bank invested about $17m in Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building

It has come to light that the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) played a pivotal role in financing the groundbreaking Number One Oxford Street Hotel & Suites in Osu, a US$51.4 million aparthotel project facilitated by the enterprising Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar of the Kwarleyz Group.

This transformative investment not only reshaped Ghana’s hospitality landscape but has also sparked conversations about the evolving dynamics between traditional hotels and the burgeoning aparthotel trend.

A recent tweet by Bright Simmons brought attention to the IFC’s substantial contribution, providing about $17 million, equivalent to one-third of the project’s costs.

“The World Bank’s IFC financed ~1/3rd of the cost of this swanky ~$50m aparthotel built by maverick Ghanaian investor, Cheddar. Aparthotels/serviced apartments are a threat to hotels in Ghana but not uniformly. Occupancy for 4 & 3 star hotels have dropped massively but not 5-stars,” he wrote.

This investment stands as a testament to the growing influence of aparthotels, which blend the convenience of apartments with the luxury of hotels.

Managed by service operator Ascott, the Number One Oxford Street Hotel & Suites is set to redefine long-stay accommodations in Ghana.

The Independent Ghana verified Simmons’ information, which aligns with the IFC’s official documentation. The extensive project, jointly undertaken by Wonda World Estate (WWE) and the Cola Group, boasts a strategic location, offering 104 apartments, 4 penthouses, retail and leisure spaces, basement parking, and upscale amenities like a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and spa.

The IFC’s environmental and social review in 2017 ensured the project adhered to rigorous standards in areas such as human resources, labor conditions, health and safety, waste management, and stakeholder engagement.

As the world-renowned IFC continues to champion innovative projects like Cheddar’s aparthotel, the hospitality industry in Ghana is undergoing a paradigm shift.

The investment not only reflects a changing consumer landscape but also signifies the growing importance of alternative accommodation options in Ghana’s dynamic hospitality market.

  • Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building a threat to hotels in Ghana – Bright Simmons

Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building a threat to hotels in Ghana – Bright Simmons

Vice President in charge of research at the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simmons, has raised concerns about the impact of aparthotels, exemplified by Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street, on the hotel industry in Ghana.

Aparthotels, such as No. 1 Oxford Street, blend apartment and hotel features, allowing occupants flexibility without fixed contracts, according to Simmons.

Situated strategically in Osu, Accra, No. 1 Oxford Street offers retail and leisure spaces, basement parking, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and spa.

Simmons broadened his assessment beyond a single building, highlighting all “aparthotels/serviced apartments” in the country as contributors to the challenge faced by traditional hotels.

He revealed that due to the attractive nature of aparthotels in the global investor market, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank which helped finance the No. 1 Oxford Street is also supporting two additional aparthotel projects, both developed by the Mohinani Group in Ghana.

Simmons expressed concerns about the growing influence of aparthotels, particularly in the mid-range segment, impacting the traditional hotel sector. Over the past seven years, he noted a significant drop in the occupancy rates of four-star and three-star hotels in Ghana, from 60% and 62% in 2014 to 45% and 35% in 2023, respectively.

He attributed this decline to the competitive advantage of aparthotels, offering better value for money and increased convenience for travelers. While five-star hotels are less affected, Simmons suggested they might also face challenges in the future.

Reportedly, approximately 80% of hotel projects in Ghana are on hold, reflecting the shifting dynamics in the sector, according to Simmons.

This revelation raises questions about the potential impact of internationally funded aparthotels on the local hotel industry and the broader economic implications for Ghana.

The future of the hospitality industry in Ghana hinges on how effectively these two segments can coexist and complement each other.

World Bank funded Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building – Bright Simmons reveals

Vice president in charge of research at IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simmons has disclosed that the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank funded one-third of the $51.4 million aparthotel, Number One Oxford Street, developed by Ghanaian investor Cheddar.

Verification by The Independent Ghana supports Simmons’ revelation, with details on the IFC’s website outlining their involvement in the 14-storey upscale building, comprising 104 apartments and four penthouses.

The IFC contributed a senior loan of up to $9.0 million and a syndicate loan of $9.0 million towards the total project cost. Strategically located in Osu, Accra, the aparthotel features retail and leisure spaces, basement parking, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and spa.

Simmons highlighted the IFC’s backing of two more aparthotel projects in Ghana, developed by the Mohinani Group, signifying a notable shift in the hospitality landscape. He also underscored the potential threat aparthotels pose to the traditional hotel sector, particularly in the mid-range segment.

According to Simmons, the occupancy rates for four-star and three-star hotels in Ghana have declined significantly over the past seven years, from 60% and 62% in 2014 to 45% and 35% in 2023, respectively. This decrease is attributed to the competitive advantage of aparthotels, offering better value for money and enhanced convenience for travelers. While five-star hotels are less affected, challenges may arise in the future.

He noted that due to this, around 80% of hotel projects in Ghana are reportedly on hold, reflecting the shifting dynamics in the sector.

This revelation prompts inquiries about the potential influence of internationally funded aparthotels on the local hotel industry and the wider economic implications for Ghana.

The future of Ghana’s hospitality industry hinges on the coexistence and mutual complementation of traditional hotels and aparthotels in the evolving market.

Do not make Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang running mate – NDC Caucus tells Mahama

Former President and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has been advised by the party’s Northern Regional Caucus not to maintain Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate.

The caucus, which met with Mahama before his trip to Canada and the United States for fundraising purposes, expressed their dissatisfaction with the the former Minister for Education’s performance and suitability for the role.

According to a DailyGuide report, the caucus members argued that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who was Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 elections, failed to deliver her home region, the Central Region, to the NDC in the 2020 elections.

They also questioned her ability to compete with the likely running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is a native of the Northern Region and has a strong appeal among the voters there.

The caucus members reportedly told Mahama that he needed to reconsider his choice of running mate and his team of advisors for the 2024 elections, as the political landscape had changed since the 2020 elections.

They also raised concerns about how to prevent rigging in the NPP’s strongholds, especially the Ashanti and Eastern regions.

“Circumstances have changed since the selection of Naana Jane for the 2020 election, Anyone who tells you that Bawumia will not have an impact in the Northern Region is misleading you” one of the senior members of the caucus is quoted to have said.

Another also stated that “Now that Bawumia is likely to gain votes in our supposed strongholds, what are we doing to secure votes in the NPP’s stronghold, particularly the Ashanti Region? A major challenge for us is how to prevent rigging in the Ashanti and Eastern Region.”

Mahama, however, has not yet announced his running mate for the 2024 elections. According to reports, he is expected to make the announcement next year, 2024.

He also said that he was confident of winning the 2024 elections and restoring the NDC to power.

Akufo-Addo is overbearing – Former NPP Member

Former Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency and ex-Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has raised concerns about the Party, describing it as having an overpowering presence and authority of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Buaben Asamoa, who recently renounced his membership alongside three other prominent party members for openly supporting independent presidential candidate John Alan Kyerematen, alleges that the NPP is now under the complete control of the president, with his desires dictating the party’s trajectory.

“The party has changed character; a party ought to be an association of like minds with freedom and opportunity to rub minds and seek out the best spaces. The New Patriotic Party that I knew in the beginning is not the New Patriotic Party that exists now. It’s become divided by heavy factionalism. Literally, it has been taken over by the executive, that is the blunt truth. The party doesn’t exist.

“The government has taken the party over, the personality of the president is overbearing and he controls that party, and that means that if you don’t do the president’s wish; if you are not in the president’s good books you are not useful to that party. That is the bottom line, that is what is happening,” he said in an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face programme.

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua on November 21, 2023, announced the forfeiture of the membership of four leading members of the party.

The four, Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique according to a press statement issued by the general secretary have been expelled from the party on the basis of their public endorsement and campaign Alan Kyerematen.

Having resigned from the NPP ahead of the party’s recently held presidential primaries, Alan Kyerematen has formed a political movement dubbed Movement for Change which has the Golden Butterfly as its symbol.

Mr Kyerematen as part of justification for his resignation, accused the government and the party’s leadership of unfair treatment against himself and his supporters. He further accused the leadership and the government of skewing the flagbearer contest in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Transgender influencer Jay Boogie allegedly faked kidney failure to scam Nigerians of millions

A Nigerian transgender influencer, Jay Boogie, has been exposed by the Nigerian Plastic surgery Community and a medical doctor for allegedly lying about his kidney failure and scamming Nigerians for money.

Jay Boogie had previously revealed that he suffered from complications after a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery, which is a cosmetic procedure that transfers fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks.

He claimed that both of his kidneys had failed as a result of the surgery and that he needed an urgent transplant to save his life. He also said that he had difficulty urinating and that he had spent all his life savings on buying diapers.

However, a medical doctor named Dr. Loveth, who had initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Jay Boogie together with the plastic surgery community, has called him out for falsifying his medical condition and scamming Nigerians for donations.

Dr. Loveth said that Jay Boogie had twisted his story from having a urinary tract infection to having a double kidney failure, and that he had refused to provide the original test result from the hospital to prove his claim.

Dr. Loveth also said that the GoFundMe account had been flagged and suspended due to the lack of evidence and transparency.

The LGBT community, which had supported Jay Boogie in his plight, has also turned against him and accused him of tarnishing their image and reputation.

They said that Jay Boogie had betrayed their trust and goodwill, and that he had used his influence to manipulate and deceive people. They also demanded that he should apologize and refund the money he had collected from the public.

Mr. Ibu’s children in police custody for ‘stealing’ N300m from his medical fund

Wife of Veteran Nigerian actor Mr Ibu, Stella Maris, has reportedly had his sons and adopted daughter, Jasmine, arrested over the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for his medical treatment.

Actress Doris Ogala disclosed this on her Instagram page, revealing that the siblings are currently held at Alagbon police station in Lagos.

As per Ogala, Stella Maris has accused Jasmine and her stepbrothers of embezzling N300 million from the account designated to collect donations for Mr Ibu’s treatment.

The motive behind the arrest is said to be Stella Maris’ desire for a new house funded by the contributions made for Mr Ibu’s medical expenses.

Ogala further noted that, following the arrest, a police investigation revealed that the donated sum did not amount to the alleged N300 million.

In her statement, Ogala said, “Jasmine and Ibu’s sons were arrested at Alagbon Police Station. They are detained there. Ibu’s wife alleged that Jasmine moved 300 million out of the account Ibu’s wife allegedly wanted them to buy her a new house from the money contributed so far for Ibu’s treatments. That’s why she arrested Jasmine. But investigation states that the money contributed isn’t even up to 300 million. Nawa oo.”

Leaked Tape: Xandy Kamel’s alleged cousin exposes her lies about her children and ex-husband

Ghanaian actress and TV presenter, Xandy Kamel, has been accused of lying about her supposed children and her ex-husband by a lady who claims to be her cousin. The lady, whose name is not revealed, made some shocking revelations in an audio that has gone viral on social media.

According to the lady, Xandy Kamel does not have any biological children, contrary to what she has been telling the public. She said that the three children that Xandy claimed to be hers were actually her elder cousin’s children, who lost their father and were taken care of by Xandy.

The lady also disputed Xandy’s account of how and where the boy died.

In an interview on The Delay Show, Xandy Kamel shared a heartbreaking story of how her oldest son drowned in a river at Sakumono, Accra, while swimming after taking an exam.

“He went to write BECE, and when he returned home, there was nobody around so he stepped out with his friends to swim,” she recalled. “I was home when my mother called that someone had told her about the unfortunate news. The caller went through my son’s phone, got her number, and called her.”

“I told my husband (now ex-husband) that my child had drowned, so he should accompany me. He told me he couldn’t. I went to Sakumono alone and made my mother report my son’s case to the police. I got my son’s body after three days. We had to perform some rituals, and paid a fine before the body was recovered.”

She said her ex-husband Kaninja refused to show up during the burial. Instead, he celebrated his birthday.

“The day my child was being buried, my husband was celebrating his birthday. He wasn’t there,” she said.

Responding to the claims, the lady claiming to be her first cousin said, “There have been a lot of issues. My mother is her mother’s sister and I know what I am talking about. I live about five blocks away from their house. The only thing that surprises me is the lies she spews. The boy died while living with me. The kids are not hers. She said three, yes. Two of the boys are our elder cousin’s children.

“Their father passed away and she is the one taking care of them because their mother isn’t working. The kids lived with Xandy when they were about two or three years and she looked after them. They are not her biological children,” she noted.

The lady expressed her displeasure at Xandy’s habit of fabricating stories to gain sympathy from the public. She advised her to stop talking about her personal issues on the media and focus on her career.

“I am pained about the fact that she says these things to gain public sympathy. I think she shouldn’t speak to these issues again. Anytime she goes for an interview and is being asked about these issues, she should just not comment on it and move on. Because anytime she visits it, it breeds a lot of issues,” she added.

Xandy Kamel has not responded to the allegations made by her supposed cousin yet. However, she has been engaged in a heated exchange with her ex-husband Kaninja on social media, following her interview with Delay, where she revealed some details of their failed marriage.

Kaninja, in his response to Xandy’s claims The Delay Show, called her a lair and a dirty wife who could not even lay her bed or sweep her room. He also accused her of having an affair in Italy and being a lesbian. He said that he divorced her because she was not a suitable wife for him.

Why Nana Why? What crime did we commit Akufo-Addo? – Goaso chief breaks down in tears

Being a traditional leader in Ghana is not an easy task, as it comes with many expectations and obligations, both formal and informal.

One of the informal rules is that a paramount chief should always be brave and strong, and never show any sign of weakness or emotion in public.

The Omanhene was speaking when the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, paid him a courtesy call on Wednesday, November 22, as part of his Building Ghana Tour.

He bemoaned the bad state of the roads in his jurisdiction, which he said affected the transportation of cocoa, the main cash crop of the area.

He also accused the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of neglecting his people, who have been loyal supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He added that his people were being gagged and intimidated whenever they voiced out their grievances. He said the gods of the land had abandoned him because of the dusty roads.

“Our road is critical to transporting cocoa, yet today our trees are being felled by Burkinabes exposing our houses to vagaries of the weather, what is our crime? When we complain too, we are being gagged,” he lamented.

As he spoke, tears welled up in his eyes, and he was about to cry in front of his guests. But his aides quickly intervened, and covered his face with a cloth to shield him from public view.

They did this to prevent him from breaking the unwritten rule that a chief cannot cry in public, as it is seen as a sign of weakness.

DWP dancers Endurance and Afronitaa are bisexual?

Danita Akosua Adomaah Yeboah aka Afronitaa and Endurance Dzigbordi Dedzo aka Endurance Grand, are two of the star dancers of Dance with a Purpose (DWP) Academy, who have been turning heads in the global dance space, notching up fame with jaw-dropping dance videos and bagging sweet brand endorsement deals.

They have millions of followers and fans on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, however, their fashion choices and gender expressions have also attracted a lot of attention and criticism, especially in a country where LGBT rights are not recognized or protected by law.

A recent controversy has erupted following the release of an alleged photo of Endurance in male boxer shorts with what looks like a protrusion around the genital area, which some now claim is indicative of a male reproductive organ.

This has now got many questioning if she really is female or not. To give context, Afronitaa and Endurance, and other known females in DWP Academy are often seen in baggy clothes, sneakers, or boots, male underwear, etc.

While non of the ladies in this group have not openly talked about LGBTQ+ issues, some people have questioned their gender identities and sexual orientations, and accused them of being part of the LGBTQ+ agenda.

One of such claims was presented a tweet by @WebkidAfrika who threw some accusations at the dance group. The tweet took aim at two of DWP’s star dancers, Afronitaa and Endurance, stirring the pot by questioning if they’re males or females.

“DWP is an Advocate for this LGBTQ+ Agenda. It’s kinda hard to differentiate the guys from the ladies in this DWP academy. Afronita & Endurance are they males or females think?” it read.

One bold user commenting under this post spiced things up, by claiming Afronita and Endurance are bisexual, but did not provide any evidence to support this allegation. Now, we couldn’t fact-check this tea, but it’s got everyone buzzing.

Ghana does not have specific legislation that protects the rights of LGBT individuals, and same-sex sexual activity is criminalized under Section 104 (1) (b) of the Criminal Offences Act of 1960.

These questions and comments have sparked curiosity in how Afronita and Endurance may respond, and whether they will address the rumors and accusations, or ignore them and focus on their dance careers.

Some fans have fiercely defended the dancers, others lounging on the neutral sidelines, and a bunch nodding along with the accusation.

DWP Academy is an academy that offers premium tuition for dance classes and challenges on TikTok. It was founded by three individuals, Ernest Kwablah (Quables), Laud Konadu (Dancegod Lloyd), and Nicolas Botchway (Afrobeast), who are keen to change the African narrative one dance step at a time and make a lasting impact. The academy has gained international recognition and fame after featuring in Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” album and collaborating with various prominent figures in the global entertainment industry.

No NPP member more loyal than me – Hopeson Adorye

Former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a former Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of airports, Hopeson Adorye, has claimed that he was the most loyal member of the party before before throwing his support behind Alan Kyerematen, the former Trade and Industry Minister, and leader of the Movement for Change.

Adorye made this statement during a media interview following his dismissal from the NPP. The party ousted him due to his public endorsement and active campaign for Kyerematen, who, like Adorye, is a former NPP member and is now running for president as an independent candidate.

Expressing his nonchalance towards the party’s decision, Adorye mentioned that he was already acquainted with the party’s constitution, which stipulates that supporting a breakaway candidate results in automatic forfeiture of party membership.

He said he was not bothered by his dismissal, as he was proud of his service to the party and confident that the party might need him again in the future.

“Who in the party can say that he is more loyal to NPP than me before I decided to support Alan Kyerematen? Who? When people are dissing the party who runs to the radio, television and defend the party? When the top hierarchy is being attacked, who goes to defend them? Please that one should not come in at all,” he said.

“When people are dissing the party, who runs to the radio, television, and defends the party? When the top hierarchy is being attacked, who goes to defend them?” Adorye questioned, underlining his consistent efforts to uphold and protect the party’s reputation in times of criticism.

Adorye, on his part, has declared his readiness to openly discuss his former party without any reservations.

The NPP announced the expulsion of Adorye in a statement on Monday, November 20, 2023, for violating the party’s constitution and code of conduct. The party accused him and three others of publicly endorsing the candidature of a person other than the duly elected Presidential Candidate of the Party; His Excellency Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, which is a breach of the “Party’s Constitution particularly Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1)”.

    Below is the Party’s statement.

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of recent activities of Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow and Boniface Abubakar Saddique which includes publicly endorsing the candidature of a person other than the duly elected Presidential Candidate of the Party; His Excellency Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.

In spite of their flagrant breach of the Party’s Constitution particularly Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1), the afore-named men still hold themselves out as members of the NPP.

For the avoidance of doubt, Article 3(5) (A) (4) of the NPP Constitution enjoins all members of the Party to “abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party”. In addition, Article 3(9) (1) of the Constitution provides as follows: “A Member of the Party, who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the Party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another Political Party, or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-election,
automatically forfeits his or her membership of the Party”.

In line with these constitutional provisions, it is the view of the NPP that Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow. Boniface Abubakar Saddique and Yaw Buaben Asamoa have AUTOMATICALLY FORFEITED their membership of the Party. They are, therefore, no
    longer members of the Party.

The NPP entreats its members to remain true to their duties as per Article 3(5) of the party Constitution. We further call upon our members to bear in mind that the Party’s focus is to unite its ranks and rally the support of Ghanaians to make history by winning the 2024 general elections.

  • Get ready to write more ‘sack’ letters – Hopeson Adorye tells NPP’s JFK

Get ready to write more ‘sack’ letters – Hopeson Adorye tells NPP’s JFK

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Hopeson Adorye, recently ousted from the party, is unreservedly expressing his discontent with the decision. In an interview with a media outlet, Adorye, seemingly undeterred by his dismissal, exuded confidence in his past contributions to the party, hinting that they might seek his support again in the future.

Now free to openly discuss his former party without inhibitions, Adorye directed a message to the General Secretary, Justin Koduah Frimpong, suggesting that he should prepare an abundance of letterheads because he, Adorye now has his “freedom”.

“The General Secretary should get a lot of letterheads down because he is going to write a lot of letters. I have my freedom. I decide where I should belong to,” rainbowradioonline.com quoted Adorye to have said.

Anticipating tumult within the NPP as the 2024 elections approach, Adorye predicted mass resignations.

Defending his loyalty to the NPP, Adorye challenged anyone in the party to claim greater allegiance than himself, especially before he threw his support behind Alan Kyerematen.

He questioned, “When people are dissing the party, who runs to the radio, television, and defends the party? When the top hierarchy is being attacked, who goes to defend them?”

Disputing the notion that he was sacked, Adorye contended that he had non-verbally communicated his departure from the party by supporting breakaway member Alan Kyerematen and his independent presidential bid.

Despite the official letter of expulsion released by the party on November 20, 2023, Adorye maintained that he was already aware of his forfeited membership, questioning the necessity of a formal communication.

He dismissed the letter as “just a waste of time,” emphasizing that the provisions of the party’s constitution were well-known to him and others, including former General Secretary Ohene Ntow.

Confident about the future, Adorye anticipates that as time progresses, the NPP might seek his audience. Unperturbed by the situation, he conveyed, “I am not worried. It is no problem.”

  • “Behave! You have a lame duck president, you need NDC’s help” – Speaker Bagbin ‘warns’ Majority

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has warned the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to cooperate with the Minority side or face legislative gridlock.

The Speaker expressed his dissatisfaction with the Majority Leader’s failure to ensure the attendance of his members during the debate on the 2024 budget. Bagbin described Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s performance as “limping”.

The Speaker attributed the poor performance of the Majority to the change of loyalties within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after the party’s presidential primaries.

Notably, with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerging as the NPP’s flagbearer, Bagbin observed a transition in allegiances away from the incumbent, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Bagbin observed that the reported change in loyalty has led to NPP MPs appearing to neglect their parliamentary responsibilities, treating President Akufo-Addo as a president with limited influence.

To tackle this issue, the Speaker encouraged the Majority Leader to give precedence to working together with the Minority, highlighting that the legislative process might encounter challenges without such collaboration.

“I expect the majority who have a limping majority leader, limping because when you look at his back you’re less than those in front of you. You have a lame duck president, a lame duck because you have elected a flagbearer and loyalty and commitment are shifting. So, your president is now a lame duck president. You need this side of the house to support you to finish your eight years,” Mr. Bagbin mentioned.

“And so if you don’t behave well, we have difficulty in proceeding as a nation…please, I expect you to cooperate; I will not allow them to bully you. You’ll get sufficient time to put across your case,” he warned.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected as the NPP’s flagbearer on November 4, 2023, ahead of the 2024 general election.
