You are creating animosity, are you using your position to abuse Otumfuo? – Dormaahene asked

An expert in international relations, Farouk Al Wahab, has warned the Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II to stop creating animosity with the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over their status and influence. He said that the Dormaahene must respect the Asantehene as his big brother, and avoid any public dispute that could undermine the unity and stability of the Ashanti and Dormaa kingdoms, and the nation as a whole.

Al Wahab, in an interview with Okatakyie Afrifa on Angel FM, dismissed the concerns that the recent verbal exchange between the two traditional rulers could escalate into a wider crisis. He said that history has shown that such rifts hardly lead to confrontations, given the democratic safeguards and the general awareness of the people.

However, he said that the Dormaahene should extend the needed respect to the Asantehene, citing two grounds that he said were central to Ghanaian culture: age and size of the area the Ashanti overlord controls.

“The Ashanti Nation has fought enough, it is the one kingdom in Africa aside eSwatini, that has arranged its affairs properly,” Al Wahab said.

He stressed that the Dormaahene still goes through the Asantehene’s territory when travelling from Accra to Dormaa, and has never been impeded or stopped. “There is a civilisation,” he said.

He added: “Nothing will make some of Dormaahene’s own subjects agree with what he is doing…. Whatever you do, Otumfuo is a big brother to you, are you then using your position to abuse him? I will tell you no… that respect must be given, at least age wise.

“In the post-colonial era, conquests are over but look at age, size of domain and keep the politics at bay because you get it wrong by engaging in that. You are creating animosity,” the expert added.

The Otumfuo recently restated how the Dormaa traditional area became a paramountcy, saying that it took a decision of a former occupant of the Golden Stool for that to happen.

Addressing his people at an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on October 19, 2023, the Asantehene said there was the need to revisit history to combat efforts from some quarters to distort history.

He said that a former predecessor of the current Dormaahene, Agyeman Badu I, who was his uncle, took his oath at the Manhyia Palace before going to assume his throne. He said that he was a teacher at the Government Boys School in Kumasi.

“It is because of these notorious ones that I am recounting this issue. What at all is it?” he emphasised, before outlining a historical sequence of relations and how the royal politics has evolved over time.

The Dormaahene, on the other hand, has challenged the level of influence of the Asantehene, saying that there was “no King in Ghana” as the 1992 constitution does not make any reference and room for that.

He also warned chiefs under the Dormaa jurisdiction from going to pay allegiance to any paramountcy aside the one that gave them their throne.

  • Mahama fights to quash lawsuit challenging his 2024 presidential bid

Former President John Dramani Mahama has filed a motion at the Supreme Court to dismiss a lawsuit challenging his qualification and eligibility to contest the 2024 presidential election.

He argues that the lawsuit, filed by journalist and lawyer Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, is flawed and should be struck out on technical grounds.

Mr Kuranchie, who is the plaintiff in the case, filed a writ of summons at the Supreme Court on June 12, 2023, naming the Attorney General, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and former President John Dramani Mahama as the defendants.

He is seeking a declaration that Mr Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is not qualified to run for president again, having already served two terms in office.

However, Mr Mahama, who is the third defendant in the case, has filed a motion at the Supreme Court on September 25, 2023, seeking an order to dismiss Mr Kuranchie’s writ of summons. He claims that Mr Kuranchie failed to comply with the court rules and procedures, and that his lawsuit is incompetent and invalid.

According to the motion, signed by Mr Tony Lithur, counsel for Mr Mahama, Mr Kuranchie did not file his statement of case in support of his writ within the required 14 days from the date he issued the writ. Instead, he filed an affidavit in support of his statement of case, facts and exhibits on July 4, 2023, with the statement of case attached to it as an exhibit.

Mr Mahama contends that this was a wrong and improper way of filing the statement of case, and that it rendered the writ defective and void. He also argues that the affidavit in support of the statement of case, facts and exhibits was irrelevant and unnecessary, and that it did not cure the defect in the writ.

“I have, however, been advised by counsel that contrary to what the search results in Exhibit (JM) show, what plaintiff filed on July 4, 2023 was an affidavit in support of plaintiff’s statement of case, facts and exhibits, with statement of case attached to it, marked as Exhibit P2. The statement of case was actually not filed.

“I am further advised by counsel and verily believe same to be true that the affidavit in support of plaintiff’s statement of case, facts and exhibits filed by plaintiff on July 4, 2023 is irrelevant and unnecessary and does not in any way cure the defect in plaintiff’s writ of summons,” he noted.

Mr Mahama is urging the Supreme Court to exercise its discretion to strike out Mr Kuranchie’s action based on these technicalities. He is also seeking any other order(s) that the court may deem fit against the plaintiff.

  • Reason why Otumfuo is asking for GHC200 per month from Ashanti Region residents

Reason why Otumfuo is asking for GHC200 per month from Ashanti Region residents

The Ashanti Kingdom’s revered leader, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a heartfelt appeal to households across the Ashanti Region, urging them to contribute GH¢200 monthly towards the restoration of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Under the initiative named ‘Heal Komfo Anokye,’ Otumfuo seeks to raise $10 million for the comprehensive renovation of the 70-year-old healthcare facility. The King launched this fundraising campaign as part of the legacy projects commemorating the 25th anniversary of his enstoolment.

During the launch, Otumfuo lamented the deplorable state of KATH, emphasizing the urgency of its restoration. He called upon all residents to commit to the cause by making regular financial contributions.

“I am appealing to my subjects and residents in the region, that if every household donates at least GH¢200 a month towards this project, we will be able to successfully renovate the hospital. Komfo Anokye, whom the hospital was named after, never got ill, so why should we watch on for the hospital that has healed many be deemed as sick, needing healing?” Otumfuo stated.

Highlighting the hospital’s crucial role in the community, Otumfuo stressed, “When our health deteriorates, this is where we will all be brought to. It is our duty to heal Komfo Anokye. I have built my Kingdom collectively with foreigners, so I ask all to come and assist me in healing Komfo Anokye.”

In a call for support, Otumfuo specifically addressed high-profile Members of Parliament (MPs), particularly the Ashanti caucus present at the event. He urged them to prioritize the development of the Ashanti Region and take personal initiatives in mobilizing funds from their constituents for the hospital’s renovation.

“Members of Parliament here should pay attention to the Ashanti Region. You are becoming too engulfed with Accra issues. Stop the hypocrisy and pay attention to the Ashanti Region’s development. Lead the charge and collect the monies from your constituents to support this project. Muntaka, you will take money for me, and so will you all,” Otumfuo declared.

‘I don’t even know who our music president is’ – Medikal

Rapper Medikal has expressed his ignorance and dissatisfaction with the leadership of the music industry in Ghana.

He said he did not know who the president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) was, and that he felt the union was not doing enough to involve and educate the artists.

Medikal made these remarks in an interview with a TV station, where he was promoting his new album. He said he was putting in work honestly, and that he expected the union to do the same.

He said: “Because if I’m a rapper, I’m actually here at a TV station to promote my album, to have conversations about the industry and that I don’t even know about who our music president is until now, then there’s a problem.”

He added: “I feel like they should involve artists. They should be holding seminars. We should be having conversations, you know, conferences so that they educate us more and talk to us and explain certain things to us.”

He also joked that he might start his own party soon, with the slogan “one house, one swimming pool”.

Medikal is one of the popular rappers in Ghana, known for his hit songs such as “Omo Ada”, “La Hustle”, and “How Much”. He is also married to actress and entrepreneur Fella Makafui.

He recently released his fifth studio album, titled “The Truth”, which features collaborations with Davido, Criss Waddle, and Joey B

  • “I would take you on and reveal your true character” – Sam George ‘warns’ Veep

“I would take you on and reveal your true character” – Sam George ‘warns’ Veep

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has declared that his relentless scrutiny of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s character will persist unabated.

The lawmaker emphasized his commitment to unveiling what he perceives as the Vice President’s hypocritical nature, one case at a time.

This declaration follows a ‘fake’ publication by TESCON-Informant, a pro-NPP news outlet, accusing Sam George of declaring war on Dr Bawumia and the Islamic leadership in Ghana.

The headline of the publication read, “Sam George declares war on Dr Bawumia and possible Muslim leadership in Ghana.” Sam George dismissed this as an orchestrated effort by Dr. Bawumia and his ardent followers.

In response to the allegation, Sam George took to his social media page, stating, “Dear Dr Mahamudu Timothy Bawumia, I have exposed just one facet of your deceitful and hypocritical character, and you and your supporters have gone into overdrive? You will have to explain thoroughly, Mr. Veep. I will address each issue in the coming year and reveal your true character to Ghanaians. Interesting times ahead @MBawumia. You and your team will be in for a surprise!”

Sam George has been a focal point of discussions recently, especially after branding Dr Bawumia as a ‘religious prostitute.’ He justified this label by highlighting the Vice President’s simultaneous engagement in political activities in both Christian churches and Islamic mosques.

During an appearance on the November 8 edition of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Sam George stated, “The best description you can give him is that he is a Muslim by day and a Christian by night; a religious prostitute cannot be our president.”

Further elaborating, Sam George cited instances where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remained silent on issues crucial to Muslims, such as the Hijab controversy and the killings of Muslim youth in Kumasi. He argued that a true Muslim would not publicly proclaim Jesus as Lord and Saviour or kneel before men of God for prayers.

“When the issue of the Hijabs came up in this country for Muslim girls, did you ever hear Dr. Bawumia speak? When the issue of fasting for girls came up during Ramadan, he was silent. When the Muslim Zongo youth were killed in cold blood in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia was silent,” Sam George asserted.

He concluded by stating, “No true Muslim anywhere in this world believes that Jesus Christ is our lord and saviour. No true Muslim kneels before a Catholic priest or a pastor to lay hands on them – only Bawumia. If you like, you can take the Suraj Mariama that talks about who Jesus is. They do not see Jesus Christ as their lord and personal saviour as we do.”

  • COCOBOD urged to account for $1.3b syndicated loan secured in 2022

COCOBOD urged to account for $1.3b syndicated loan secured in 2022

Ranking Member of the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament, Eric Opoku is adamant that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) must provide a detailed account of the $1.3 billion Cocoa Syndicated loan it secured in 2022. The demand for transparency comes ahead of the anticipated approval of a new $800 million loan slated for this year.

Opoku emphasizes the need for COCOBOD to justify the allocation of funds from the previous loan before seeking approval for the new financial arrangement.

“What we do is that before we approve the new facility, they have to convince us as to how they used the previous one. And probably, it is one of the reasons they haven’t been able to bring the facility to us, why they are. We’ve heard of the GH¢800 million arrangements, but it hasn’t come to parliament yet,” he says.

Opoku, quoted by citinewsroom.com, expresses concerns about what he perceives as years of mismanagement at COCOBOD. He emphasizes the importance of ensuring that funds are utilized in the best interest of cocoa farmers and the broader Ghanaian populace.

“When it comes, they must be answerable for how they utilized the first facility they took, the GH¢1.3 billion. And if we are not convinced that that money was used in the best interest of our cocoa farmers and that matter Ghanaians, they will have difficulty getting approval for this one,” he asserts.

COCOBOD, currently seeking a $400 million loan from cocoa traders to support its operations for the 2023/2024 season, faces scrutiny over the prolonged process of the Syndicated loan.

Opoku criticizes the financial arrangement, highlighting the organization’s struggle to settle debts and raising concerns about fund allocation.

“For six continuous years, COCOBOD has been making losses. How can they set aside money to finance their activities? Don’t forget that the loan that we take, we don’t use all the money to buy cocoa. Part of it is used to pay their salary, part of it is used to pay their administrative cost,” he explains.

Opoku further quotes the Minister for Finance, revealing that 53% of the total cocoa proceeds are allocated to administrative costs, with just over 40% directed towards farmers.

“So, you can imagine what is happening. All mismanagement and COCOBOD is now undischarged, insolvent.”

“The Fat Boy with the Bomb” book enlists Vicky Hammah, Putin, Kim Jong Un and others

Ghanaian politician Vicky Hammah has been listed alongside heavyweights like Russian President, Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the controversial compendium “The Fat Boy with the Bomb and 299 of the World’s Craziest Politicians”.

Authored by Brian O’Connell and Norman H. Chung and released in 2015, the book throws the spotlight on a variety of global political figures famed for their outlandish behaviour and statements.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Vicky Hammah, did not shy away from acknowledging her unexpected feature.

According to a series of screenshots from a post she made on social media, Vicky, in a seeming response to this revelation wrote, “My name made it into this book among some of the most powerful leader[s] yeeey 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 😂😂😂. Number 10 in Africa 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾. I’m a great ☺️”.

Characterised on Amazon as an “illustrated international dossier of lunatic statesmen and insane leaders,” the book profiles 300 politicians in a range of political and mental hues. It’s an anthology of the peculiar, ranging from benign eccentrics to those with more severe delusions. With caricatures and brief accounts from across the political spectrum, it delves into the lives of those who have made absurd claims and taken extreme actions.

The write-up on Hammah dubs her a “Goddess of beauty”, highlighting her tenure as Deputy Minister of Communications and her notorious dismissal following the emergence of a tape wherein she claimed she would not exit politics until amassing at least a million dollars.

Additionally, the book recounts an incident with her alleged former boyfriend, Richard Frimpong Dardo, who was arrested for purportedly assaulting her in a dispute over sexual matters.

Vicky Hammah, unfazed by the uncomplimentary aspects of her depiction, optimistically wrote, “In darkness light shines brightest😁😃,” accompanied by smiling emojis.

Notable figures such as Teodoro Obiang Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, and Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, also find mention in this controversial ‘register’.

‘Book knowledge is not always wisdom’ – Mr Logic ‘tears into’ NSMQ’s Prof Kaufmann

Entertainment pundit, Mr Logic, has expressed his disappointment with Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, the quiz mistress for the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ).

His remarks come in the wake of comments made by Professor Kaufmann during an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat after the 2023 NSMQ competition, which ignited a social media firestorm.

Professor Kaufmann’s statements alluded to the idea that certain schools prioritized “singing and dancing” while PRESEC (Presbyterian Boys Senior High School – Legon) dedicated itself to rigorous academic learning and quiz preparation.

These comments triggered widespread backlash, leading to the Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) demanding an apology from the quiz mistress.

Mr Logic, speaking on the November 9 episode of United Showbiz on UTV, echoed the call for an apology from Professor Kaufmann.

“I like the way she conducts the quiz. But when I saw what she said, I was disappointed. She has to apologise to calm everyone down…,” he said.

He voiced his disappointment with her comments, emphasizing that while she possessed ‘book knowledge’, wisdom and understanding were evidently lacking in her understanding of the creative sector.

In his own words, Mr Logic emphasised, “Book knowledge is not always wisdom; book knowledge is called knowledge, and wisdom is wisdom. There are professors who are knowledgeable but are not wise. We are blessed with wisdom, knowledge and understanding, but she lacked the two at that point, which is why she said that.”

Mr Logic underscored the need for mutual respect and recognition between the academic and creative sectors in Ghana.

“She shouldn’t undermine us; many creatives went to school. Did she think only jobless people are in the creative space? If you look at some professors and doctors, the money people in the creative sector make, they wouldn’t be able to make that amount throughout their lives. But they undermine some of these creative people and label them as jobless. I was offended when I saw the story, she has to apologize to us,” he noted

  • We have opened the floodgate for anybody to create constituencies – Asiedu Nketiah

The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketiah, has voiced his concerns over the growing number of Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana.

In a recent discussion on TV3, he expressed his preference for a more streamlined parliamentary system with only 200 MPs, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of the current situation.

Nketiah commented on the legal framework for creating constituencies, stating, “We have opened the floodgate for anybody to create constituencies as long as they are in government.” He referred to the clause in the constitution that allows for the revision of constituencies and boundaries following population censuses.

The Chairman’s preference for a smaller parliamentary setup stems from a belief that Ghana’s original projection of 200 MPs when drafting the constitution was adequate. However, he acknowledged that a constitutional loophole was exploited during President Kufour’s government, a move that received approval from the judiciary at the time.

Nketiah’s perspective is grounded in the idea that constituency alterations should primarily aim at redistributing populations over the coming decade rather than continuously increasing the number of MPs.

This viewpoint addresses the growing concern about the proliferation of constituencies and the subsequent expansion of Ghana’s parliamentary body.

He he urged caution among the Ashanti community, acknowledging that there are individuals who harbour intentions to displace them from the country.

“You all should be very careful because they wish they could drive all of us out of this country. We are envied in the Ghana that we live in, some wish we could just be ejected. So, if you are in the kingdom, be careful,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed.

However, he lamented that the kingdom is now facing threats from within, as some of his subjects are showing ingratitude and disloyalty to the Golden Stool and the Asantehene.

Otumfuo cautioned the Ashantis to be wary of such actions and utterances, as they could undermine the unity and stability of the kingdom and the nation.

The Asantehene’s address also reflected upon the historical resilience of the Ashanti people, notably highlighting the failed attempts of colonial powers to seize the symbolic Golden Stool.

He remarked, “Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing. The Whiteman was with weapons and ammunitions but never got to even sight the Golden Stool.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed disappointment at the current state of affairs, where enmity appears to come from within the Ashanti community itself. He lamented, “But because of ingratitude, Ashantis are now our own enemies, causing our own destruction.”

Otumfuo also appealed to his subjects to support his efforts to redeem the image of the kingdom and to promote development, peace and harmony in Asanteman and Ghana.

“Be careful otherwise they will soon drive us away” – Otumfuo warns Ashantis

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern warning to his subjects, including chiefs, cautioning them against becoming adversaries of the Ashanti kingdom and inadvertently contributing to its downfall.

His admonishment is rooted in the perception that the kingdom has garnered envy and animosity from some quarters in Ghana.

The monarch’s message, delivered during a recent address, underscores the need for vigilance within the Ashanti community to safeguard the kingdom’s heritage.

“We are envied in the Ghana that we live in, some wish we could just be ejected. So, if you are in the kingdom, be careful. Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing,” he noted.

Otumfuo expressed concern that elements within the kingdom could potentially become instruments of its destruction, and he called for heightened caution.

Reflecting on the history of the Ashanti kingdom, the Asantehene noted the resilience displayed when faced with external threats. “Isn’t it amazing, the Whiteman came and tried as much as they could but all of that led to nothing.

“The Whiteman was with weapons and ammunitions but never got to see the Golden Stool,” he remarked, highlighting the kingdom’s historic defiance against colonial powers.

However, Otumfuo lamented a shift in dynamics, stating, “But because of ingratitude, Ashantis are now our own enemies, causing our own destruction.” He cautioned that there are forces both within and outside the kingdom that may seek to undermine the Ashanti legacy.

“You all should be very careful because they wish they could drive all of us out of this country,” he said.

The Asantehene’s warning is a call to collective consciousness, urging Ashantis to remain united and protect their heritage. He stressed the need for vigilance to prevent any potential threats from those who may desire the downfall of the Ashanti kingdom.

The Ashanti kingdom, with its rich cultural history and traditional leadership, has been a symbol of heritage and legacy in Ghana since the 13th/17 centuries.

The current occupant of the Golden Stool, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has embarked on efforts to preserve and restore the image of the kingdom.

Recent actions by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II include the destoolment of several subchiefs for various offenses, including engaging in illegal mining and participating in the unauthorized sale of land. These measures are aimed at upholding the values and traditions of the Ashanti kingdom.

The Asantehene’s recent encounter with the people of Offinso and the Dormaahene is also noteworthy, as it reflects his commitment to maintaining order and justice within the Ashanti community.

  • Power FM ordered to apologise to Samira Bawumia and Fulani community

The National Media Commission (NMC) has directed Power FM, an Accra-based radio station, to apologise to the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Samira Bawumia, and the entire Fulani community in Ghana for allowing their platform to be used to insult and denigrate them.

According to a statement issued by the NMC on November 6, 2023, the radio station breached the ethical standards of journalism and the public’s sensibilities by airing a programme on November 1, 2023, that contained gender-based and ethnic slurs against Mrs. Bawumia and the Fulani people.

The statement, signed by the Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, said that the programme sought to incite ethnic tension and undermine national cohesion, peace and development. “Such behaviour has no place in our search for national cohesion, peace and development,” the statement read.

The NMC, therefore, ordered the managers of Power FM to render an apology to the affected victims as well as the entire Ghanaian public. The NMC also asked the radio station to present evidence of the apology to the commission before November 11, 2023, or face further sanctions.

The NMC is the statutory body mandated to regulate the media in Ghana and ensure that they adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.

The NMC also has the power to investigate and resolve complaints against the media and to promote media freedom and responsibility.

  • ICAG to partner with EOCO in clamping down on corruption in Ghana

ICAG to partner with EOCO in clamping down on corruption in Ghana

Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has called upon the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) to join forces with EOCO and other regulatory bodies to intensify the fight against corruption in the country.

During a sensitisation event in Tamale, focused on public sector fraud and corruption investigation, the director emphasised the critical role that ICAG members, noted for their professional integrity, could play in reporting corruption and fraud-related cases.

Such collaborative efforts are essential for the effective investigation and prosecution of those involved in corrupt practices.

Addressing the members of the Tamale District Society of ICAG last Saturday, COP Addo-Danquah urged the accountants to remain alert and proactive.

She highlighted the need for diligent detection and investigation of individuals masquerading as fraudsters.

The gathering aimed at enhancing the ICAG members’ understanding of evolving fraud and corruption trends and the sophisticated tactics adopted by offenders.

COP Addo-Danquah pinpointed bureaucracy, greed, and a lack of commitment as primary corruption drivers within the public sector, with some employees being complicit.

Nonetheless, she expressed optimism that ICAG’s involvement in reporting suspected cases would significantly contribute to confronting the challenge.

Reaffirming this sentiment, the Chairman of the Tamale District Society of ICAG, Abdul Rahman Osman, pledged his organisation’s dedication to working in tandem with EOCO and other pertinent authorities to root out corruption.

He recognised the importance of the knowledge shared by EOCO, believing it would greatly benefit the ICAG members, the accounting profession, and the nation.

He stated, “Now that we are aware of the mandate of EOCO, what they do, and with this clarification on some of the pertinent issue regarding their work, it is my firm belief that what we have learnt will be very beneficial to us as members and to the accounting professions and to the nation at large that will be put to practice in our various workplaces.”

The partnership between ICAG and EOCO marks a significant step towards fostering a culture of integrity and accountability in Ghana’s financial and public sectors.

Bawumia unlikely to win 2024 elections – Franklin Cudjoe

Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has cast doubts on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 General Elections following his recent win in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary.

Despite receiving 61.47 percent of the votes, Cudjoe suggests this endorsement may not be enough for a national victory.

In a statement following the NPP’s internal election results, Mr Cudjoe pointed out a historical pattern where successful presidential candidates in Ghana’s general elections had previously secured more than 64 percent in their party’s primaries.

“No candidate has gone on to win the general elections if the person had obtained less than 64 percent of the vote in the internal primaries,” Mr Cudjoe highlighted in a Facebook post on Sunday.

The comment follows the election of Dr. Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer on Saturday, November 4, where he secured 118,210 votes, translating to 61.47 percent of the valid votes.

His nearest rival, Ken Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, received 71,996 votes, equating to 37 percent.

Adding historical context to his analysis, Mr Cudjoe mentioned, “No candidate in Ghana’s history has gone on to win the general elections if s/he obtained less than 85% of the vote in internal primaries, except in 2000, which was a very special election (the country had never before seen a switch of power through the ballot).”

The prediction by Mr Cudjoe brings a speculative edge to the political discussions as Ghana inches closer to its 2024 General Elections, with all eyes on whether Dr Bawumia can break the historical trend.

  • Who will be Dr Bawumia’s running mate? Netizens weigh in on four options

Who will be Dr Bawumia’s running mate? Netizens weigh in on four options

The recent triumph of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in securing the flagbearer position for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections has led to fervent online discussions about his potential running mate.

Dr. Bawumia, who emerged victorious in the presidential primary on November 4, 2023, is set to challenge former president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) along with several other candidates in the 20204 general elections.

Yet, the identity of Dr. Bawumia’s running mate remains a subject of intense speculation on social media.

No official announcement has been made, prompting many to weigh in on who they believe would be the most suitable candidate to join Dr Bawumia in the upcoming election campaign.

In the wake of the primaries, a list of four possible running mates has surfaced, dominating online debates. These contenders include Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Minister of Energy; Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education; and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central who was also a strong opponent in the race for the party’s flagbearership.

The conversation on the aforementioned individuals was initiated by TV broadcaster Bella Mundi, who posed the question to her audience on her X handle.

“Who among these 4 would you choose to become Dr. Bawumia’s running mate? #ElectionCommandCentre #NPPDecides #NPPPresidentialPrimaries #TV3NewDay.” Accompanying her post were images of the four mentioned personalities, which led to a plethora of comments from the public.

Reactions were mixed, as netizens took to Twitter to express their candid views. User @MrMinp3dede voiced a preference for the fourth option, while others, like @_TheRealManuel, questioned the media’s focus on NPP’s running mate choice when other parties have not received the same scrutiny. Some users suggested regional strategies; @khanboakye noted the regional origins of the candidates, whereas @YawRico hinted at a decision already being made in favour of Dr. Prempeh to win back support from the Asante region.

Others were overtly critical; @DonYussif branded all the options, including the current government, as failures, and @taliban_me took a more combative stance, suggesting the pairing of Dr. Bawumia with Ursula Owusu-Ekuful would be an invitation to criticism.

While some were dismissive of the prospects, such as @agyenim_boaten and @SocratesAPA who called for new faces or dismissed current options outright, a few Twitter users showed support for specific candidates. @Mougio18 and @Waws_tv championed Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, believing he would be a strategic choice for garnering votes. In contrast, @Onyamedehyee88 and others praised Dr. Adutwum as the most capable among the mentioned possibilities.

In a blend of seriousness and sarcasm, some users, like @Youngmilla10 and @NanaWan_gh, played with the implications of certain selections on the party’s fortunes, while @kusiemaame_tw humorously suggested that the incumbent President Nana Addo should be considered as vice.

Benjamin Crabbe (@Hashhtech) speculated that Kojo Oppong Nkrumah could be an unexpected choice, while Gyau Frimpong (@Qwequ7) went so far as to prophesy that John Kumah, the Deputy Finance Minister, would be named the running mate.

Read below some of the comments.

    • Kennedy didn’t leave because they’ve promised him vice, you saw it here first
    • Replace Ursula with someone else and we can have a convo
    • 3rd frame is better but 4th frame will win them the votes.
    • Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh. That man’s work is unmatched in the NPP. He knows how to work with people. He managed the education sector well as a minister, now as an energy minister, with all the economic difficulties, our lights are still on. Dr Bawumia should Pick him as his VP.
    • If he doesn’t choose Kennedy then NPP is going to opposition
    • Ken is the only correct answer. If he gets it, his businesses will expand and he can do more for ppl than he’s doing now. The other businessmen will get on board as well
    • If Dr wins, ken would be made the trade minister.. the battle is b/n NAPO and Adutwum .. and NAPO stands tall
    • All of dem be failures including Bawumia, Nana Addo and even yourself(media) for the engaging in during these corrupt politicians bidding for dem
    • There’s NO other one BETTER than Ken
    • None, I think he will go in for Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The discourse reflects a broader sentiment on leadership qualities and political strategy, with @ShaiSnr and others criticizing the level of leadership among the current ministers. Despite the varied opinions, the overall mood on social media is one of anticipation and curiosity as to whom Dr. Bawumia will select as his political partner in the race for Ghana’s presidency in 2024.

Vicky Hammah joins Putin and Kim Jong Un in the league of world’s ‘most bizarre’ politicians

NPP is anti-northerners, they won’t let Bawumia become a President – Mahama (FLASHBACK)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. Dr. Bawumia won the presidential primary held on November 4, 2023, with 118210 votes representing 61.43% of total votes.

The Electoral Commission has declared him as the winner and the new leader of the NPP.

This development has brought attention to a past statement from former President John Dramani Mahama, who had claimed that the NPP would never allow Dr. Bawumia to be its flagbearer.

Mr. Mahama, who was the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2016 and 2020 elections, had made this remark during a campaign rally in the Northern Region in November 2016.

Below is an excerpt from an article published on citifmonline.com that reported Mr. Mahama’s statement:

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will never allow its current Running Mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be its Flagbearer, President John Mahama has stated.

According to President Mahama, the NPP has always taken northerners for granted and he expressed pity for those who sided with the main opposition party over his governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He thus asked northerners to reject the NPP describing it as a party that does not believe in the potential of Northerners. Addressing residents of Lawra in the Upper West Region, President Mahama, himself a native of Bole in the Northern Region, lamented, “Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our northern brothers running and also doing this.

They will use you and dump you.“Let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for president in NPP. They will never give it to him I can assure you.”

President Mahama hearkened back to the death of former President John Evans Atta Mills which led to him assuming the mantle of the Presidency and later the flagbearership of the NDC going into the 2012 elections.

He reminded that he had the full backing of the party executives of the NDC and no congress was needed as he opined that, “if it was another party, they would have insisted there should be a congress and in that congress I would have been contested and they would have given the leadership to somebody else.”

President Mahama thus declared, “I am proud to be a member of the NDC because I know it is a party that opens opportunities for all people of Ghana irrespective of your ethnic affiliation or you religious affiliation.”

Mr. Mahama’s statement has been proven wrong by the outcome of the NPP flagbearer election, which has shown that the party has confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also a native of the Northern Region, has been the running mate of President Nana Akufo-Addo since 2008 and has played a key role in the NPP’s economic and digital policies. He has also been praised for his performance as the head of the Economic Management Team and the Vice Chair of the Police Council.

Dr. Bawumia will face the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 presidential election.

Below is an excerpt from an article published on graphic.com.gh that reported Mr. Mahama’s statement:

President John Dramani Mahama has predicted that  Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be dumped by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after using him for the party’s dirty job.

He said he felt sorry for Dr Bawumia because he would never be given the opportunity to lead the NPP when the time comes.

Speaking at a mini rally of the NDC in Lawra Friday as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region,  the President said  opportunities in the NPP were restricted.

Using what he said happened to Alhaji Aliu Mahama as an example,  President Mahama said, “Alhaji Aliu Mahama was Vice President under the NPP government. He served faithfully under President Kufuor and, so, when eight years was up and President Kufuor was leaving, the natural order of succession is that he should have been given the opportunity to lead that party but, 17 people contested him and defeated him.”

“That is why I say NDC is a party of opportunity because if NDC wasn’t, who am I, a boy from Bole born in Damango, who am I to stand here and call myself President of the Republic of Ghana?”

President Mahama said in the NDC,  opportunities were opened to all no matter a person’s ethnic background.

Turning to his “northern brothers” ; the President said, “I feel sad when I see some of our northern brothers running around and also doing certain things. They will use you and dump you.”

“Let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for President in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you,” he told hundreds of supporters of the NDC that gathered at the rally.

He added, “When the misfortune hit us and our father Professor Mills passed away, the Constitution said the Vice President should take over, I did. But then we were close to an election. If it was another party, they would have insisted that there should be a Congress and in that Congress I would have been contested and they would have given the leadership to somebody else.”

Mr. Mahama’s statement has been proven wrong by the outcome of the NPP flagbearer election, which has shown that the party has confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision. “I have called Bawumia to congratulate him” – Afriyie Akoto

Following the conclusion of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer election, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Food and Agriculture and a contender in the race, has extended his congratulations to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his resounding victory.

“First of all, let me congratulate the Vice President for such an emphatic victory; it means the NPP has spoken with a huge voice that we have chosen Dr. Bawumia to lead us into the election next year,” Afriyie-Akoto remarked, indicating the party’s overwhelming support for Bawumia’s candidacy.

Afriyie Akoto in an interview with Joy News also mentioned that he has already reached out to Bawumia to offer his personal congratulations and to discuss the upcoming formalities that are expected to take place at the stadium. He highlighted the significance of this election for the NPP, describing it as a historic event that sets the direction for the party in the coming years.

In terms of the election process, Afriyie Akoto shared positive feedback: “So far my agents around the country haven’t reported anything negative.” His observations at polling centres in Accra confirmed his agents’ reports, as he found the electoral system to have functioned smoothly, which, in his view, lends credibility to the outcome of the vote.

Afriyie Akoto candidly expressed his disappointment at not winning but showed appreciation for the support he received, “Obviously, you go into a contest to win, so if you don’t win, it is a disappointment but I really appreciate the electorates, the delegates who stood by me and voted for me.”

He accepted the party’s decision with grace, acknowledging that the collective voice of the party had made its choice clear, “It means that my message went down well with them, but the party has decided.”

Provisional results have shown the following tally:

    1. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong – 33,862 (38.38%)
    2. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – 53,079 (60.15%)

    4. Francis Addai-Nimoh – 464 (0.53%)

The Electoral Commission is yet to confirm these results and make a formal announcement of the winner.

NPP Primaries: Sarah Adwoa Safo (MP) and Mike Oquaye Jnr share a warm hug after voting

In a display of party unity and personal reconciliation, Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency Sarah Adwoa Safo, and Mike Oquaye Jnr, shared a warm embrace after casting their votes in the New Patriotic Party primaries.

This poignant moment comes after the widely reported tensions that surfaced between the two prior to the 2020 elections.

During the lead-up to the 2020 elections, Safo and Oquaye Jnr were competitors for the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat, leading to a naturally competitive atmosphere.

However, despite the past rivalry, the current primaries saw the two figures setting aside previous differences, highlighting the party’s overarching aim for solidarity ahead of national elections.

The gesture between Safo and Oquaye Jnr has been seen as a significant step towards healing past divisions, showcasing the importance of unity within the party’s ranks.

It sends a powerful message to supporters and members alike, emphasizing that personal past conflicts are secondary to the collective goals of the NPP.

NPP has addressed all the issues I had earlier – Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong has publicly acknowledged the efforts of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in addressing his previous concerns regarding the election process.

He extended his commendations to the elections committee, particularly praising Professor Mike Oquaye, the chairman, for their willingness to accommodate the changes he had advocated for.

“The issues I had earlier were addressed. I will congratulate the elections committee, the chairman, Professor Mike Oquaye. So far, what we wanted they gladly accepted it,” Agyapong stated, expressing satisfaction with the party’s response to his concerns.

The MP for Assin Central also expressed hope that the execution of the elections would be conducted fairly. “And we hope those who are implementing it will be fair,” he added, indicating that while the committee has set the stage right, the onus is now on the implementers to carry out the process accurately and justly.

Agyapong is currently awaiting the election results with high hopes for a peaceful outcome. “All I don’t want is violence,” he declared, underscoring his desire for a tranquil and orderly voting environment. His main worry, he shared, is individuals who may disrupt the process by taking the law into their own hands.

The influential figure reassured that if he speaks out, it is in reaction to perceived injustices. “Anytime you see Kennedy Agyapong talking, it means I am reacting to some issues which are not deemed fair. So I don’t have a problem,” he clarified.

As the NPP progresses with its election, all eyes are on the commitment to a smooth and equitable process, reflecting the party’s internal resolve for a fair and peaceful election.

A prominent candidate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer election, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed his equanimity regarding today’s electoral outcome.

“I am going into the election. I know I can win, I know I can lose, so I don’t have a problem at all,” Agyapong stated, highlighting his readiness to accept the results, regardless of whether he wins or loses.

  • “You want me to talk about this here? Today?!” – Akufo-Addo’s terse reply to economy question in NPP race

“You want me to talk about this here? Today?!” – Akufo-Addo’s terse reply to economy question in NPP race

In the thick of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer election, President Nana Akufo-Addo offered a decisive retort to a journalist’s probe about the state of the national economy following his vote.

When pressed about the potential victor in the race, he maintained, “The one that the grassroots of our party want is the one who will win.”

However, the atmosphere took a pointed turn when the conversation shifted towards the nation’s economic performance. Faced with a question on his administration’s economic stewardship, Akufo-Addo‘s response was notably terse: “You want me to come and have this interview here? Today?”

This stern interjection was swiftly followed by a smile before he took his leave, settling into his vehicle.

Since assuming office in 2017, Akufo-Addo’s tenure has been marked by efforts to revitalize the economy, dealing with challenges such as inflationary pressures, currency fluctuation, and the recent global economic impacts.

His government claims to have been instrumental in implementing policies aimed at industrialization, agricultural development, and infrastructural expansion, although the journey has been met with both milestones and hurdles.

  • I am the bold honest leader Ghanaians want – Kennedy Agyapong

I am the bold honest leader Ghanaians want – Kennedy Agyapong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has declared that he is the bold honest leader that Ghanaians are expecting in the 2024 presidential election, proclaiming his readiness to outperform former President Mahama in an electoral showdown.

Speaking to the media after casting his ballot in the NPP primaries, Agyapong said that he had the qualities that set him apart from other candidates.

“Look everywhere, you know what Ghanaians are expecting is a bold, honest leader. If it is Kennedy Agyapong, I will beat Mahama hands down. No doubt about it,” Agyapong stated, articulating the desires of a populace that has witnessed an array of leaders from diverse professional backgrounds. Despite having experienced governance by lawyers, soldiers, and economists, the people’s expectations remain unmet amid the current state of affairs.

Kennedy Agyapong, with a firm background in business, urges the electorate to pivot from the norm and consider what an entrepreneur could offer in the realm of national leadership. “Therefore, Kennedy Agyapong, the businessman, let’s give him a chance and see what a businessman can also do,” he suggested, aiming to bring his business acumen to the forefront of political governance.

Highlighting his strengths, Agyapong focused on his boldness, truthfulness, and entrepreneurial expertise. He expressed confidence that these qualities would make him a formidable candidate against any National Democratic Congress (NDC) opponent.

“I stand tall, you know when you bring any NDC, any contestant, those three things will let me win the election easily,” he concluded, indicating his perceived advantages in the political arena.

Agyapong’s message resonates with a growing portion of the electorate yearning for transparency and a proactive approach to leadership-a call that may shape the upcoming political landscape in Ghana.

The NPP primaries are expected to be keenly contested, as the party seeks to retain power in the 2024 elections. The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has already selected Mahama as its candidate

“If it is Kennedy Agyapong, I will beat Mahama hands down. No doubt about it. Look everywhere, you know what Ghanaians are expecting is a bold honest leader. • Ken Agyapong has made himself a threat to the NPP – Kofi Bentil

Ken Agyapong has made himself a threat to the NPP – Kofi Bentil

Lawyer Kofi Bentil has praised Kennedy Agyapong for his effective campaign as a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, Bentil has raised concerns that Agyapong’s approach may also pose a threat to the party.

In a statement issued on Facebook on November 3, 2023, Bentil acknowledged Agyapong’s commendable campaign efforts but cautioned that his strategies could potentially disrupt the party’s unity.

“Ken Agyepong has run a very effective campaign. For that, he deserves kudos. Whether he proved that he was the better choice is where he fell short in my view,” Bentil asserted.

“He has made himself a threat to the NPP, but surely he can pivot and be an asset to the NPP. That’s what he should do,” Bentil advised, sharing a post that showcased Agyapong with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and other aspirants.

The two politicians had their last encounter at the NPP headquarters in Accra on November 2. Along with two other contenders, they signed an agreement of comradeship to maintain decorum during and after the party’s primary elections.

Bentil expressed his hope for a peaceful election, emphasising the importance of the outcome reflecting the people’s will: “We all pray for a peaceful election tomorrow so it will be what the choice of the people are. When it’s said and done May Ghana win,” he concluded.

Kennedy Agyapong is in the race for the flagbearer position alongside three other candidates, including Dr Bawumia, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis-Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP is set to hold its primary on November 4, 2023, to elect a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and to steer the party’s direction ahead of the general elections in 2024.

How govt allegedly sabotaged Kofi Amoabeng’s US visa and labelled him a security risk

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UT Bank, Kofi Amoabeng, has shared his experience of reportedly being labelled a security risk by the government, following his bank’s closure in 2017, which led to complications in obtaining a US visa.

In an interview on TV3’s The Day Show with host Bella Mundi on 2 November 2023, he recounted the legal struggle to reclaim his passport for a medical check-up, as a case concerning his bank’s closure was/is in court.

“I wanted to go for a medical check-up right, and we go to court for them to release my passport to me. After up and down, up and down, the judge said ‘I don’t see how I would keep his passport, let him go and check himself and come back because after all if he dies the case would die’,” he explained.

Despite the court’s decision, Amoabeng faced visa denial at the American Embassy, a place he had frequented since the 80s. He later discovered that a letter from a government department had branded him a security risk.

“I went to the American Embassy, and I have been going to America since the 80s, the embassy refused me an entry visa. When I checked through the back door, there was a letter from some government department saying I was a security risk, or I shouldn’t be made to fly, even after the court had given me my passport,” he said.

Amoabeng attributed the actions against him to envy and vindictiveness within the government and state institutions. “What happens is that you have people who are envious, who are jealous, who are vindictive and they hide behind the institutions, they are like cockroaches actually, …so you will not see them, but you will know that they are causing havoc,” he said.

He continued to criticise the government for undermining state institutions by installing loyal figures. “And it is also sad because the government when they come into power, they compromise the state institutions, all. They change all the heads and they put their puppets, or their cronies, or their cohort or whatever, and they can really make you uncomfortable if they want to.”

While he expressed no bitterness over the bank’s closure, the fate of his former staff, with some having passed away or fallen into poverty, deeply affected him.

Amoabeng mentioned he held no hatred but sought divine leniency for his adversaries. “As I sit here, I still don’t hate anybody. I don’t have time, because I will be eating my own mind [up]. I don’t have it. So I only pray to God that whoever hates me, God should tone down on the punishment for the person.”

Kofi Amoabeng speaks out: I left UT Bank 18 months before its downfall

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UT Bank, Kofi Amoabeng, has revealed that he left the bank 18 months before its collapse in 2017.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s The Day Show on 2 November 2023, with host Bella Mundi, he said “I left the bank about 18 months before the bank closed. I’m in court now as we speak. I mean, 18 months — if there had been anything, it would have come out. Because there was a new MD (managing director) and the board was also functioning.” His detachment from the bank during its terminal phase was emphasised, hinting at his non-involvement in the ensuing financial debacle.

He revealed that although he was in court over the closure of the bank, he had nothing to hide.

On matters concerning his personal tribulations following the bank’s closure, Amoabeng revealed the legal challenges he faced just to obtain his passport for a medical check-up, “I wanted to go for a medical check-up, right? And we go to court for them to release my passport to me. After up and down, up and down, the judge said ‘I don’t see how I would keep his passport, let him go and check himself and come back because after all if he dies the case would die’.”

The struggle extended beyond the courtroom. Amoabeng narrated an incident that underscored his unexpected designation as a ‘security risk’ which led to the denial of an entry visa to the United States: “I went to the American Embassy, and I have been going to America since the 80s, the embassy refused me an entry visa. When I checked through the back door, there was a letter from some government department saying I was a security risk, or I shouldn’t be made to fly, even after the court had given me my passport,” he elucidated.

Amoabeng did not hold back on his views about the current state of political affairs and its impact on institutional integrity in Ghana. “What happens is that you have people who are envious, who are jealous, who are vindictive and they hide behind the institutions, they are like cockroaches actually, …so you will not see them, but you will know that they are causing havoc,” he expressed.

Further discussing the influence of government on state institutions, he said, “And it is also sad because the government when they come into power, they compromise the state institutions, all. They change all the heads and they put their puppets, or their cronies, or their cohort or whatever, and they can really make you uncomfortable if they want to. It is a matter of telling whoever you put there that, make the guy uncomfortable.”

Despite the adversities, Amoabengs philosophical outlook remains unshaken. He shared his ethos on personal vendettas and the futility of hatred, “As I sit here, I still don’t hate anybody. I don’t have time, because I will be eating my own mind [up]. I don’t have it.
So I only pray to God that whoever hates me, God should tone down on the punishment for the person. Because God loves me so if you hate me He will punish you. You should pray for your enemies. I pray for them, after all how much do you need.”

Amoabeng, who founded UT Bank in 1997, witnessed its rise to a significant player in Ghana’s banking sector. The bank’s journey came to an abrupt end in 2017 when the Bank of Ghana revoked its licence due to insolvency and capital deficiencies.

Beyond the financial loss, the closure impacted lives, leading to hardship among former employees — a sentiment Amoabeng reflects on with sombreness rather than bitterness. His recent book, “The UT Story: Humble Beginnings”, offers an introspective look at the bank’s narrative and its unforeseen end.

I still love him – Apostle Owusu-Bempah talks about Akufo-Addo

Founder and leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, recently opened up about his unwavering affection for President Nana Akufo-Addo, despite unmet expectations.

Speaking on OkayFM’s ‘Ade Ahye Abia’ with host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, Owusu-Bempah clarified misconceptions about his support for Akufo-Addo and the ruling party, NPP.

Owusu-Bempah asserted, “To say that I aligned myself with the NPP or did something for Akufo-Addo expecting him to build my church if he won, and that I am now bitter because it didn’t happen, is far from the truth. I don’t even entertain such thoughts. If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same. Whenever I kneel down in prayer, I still remember him [Akufo-Addo] in my prayers.”

The reverend recounted his past dedication to the NPP’s leadership, praying thrice weekly for nine months, with Nana Akufo-Addo and his wife actively participating.

“In fact, it was his wife who made the promise first, saying, ‘If, by God’s grace, we win the 2016 elections, we will build your church for you.’ I responded with ‘Glory be to God.’ However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will.”

Owusu-Bempah also mentioned that he has distanced himself from visiting Akufo-Addo, stating, “I no longer go to him or and even if they call for me, I will not go. No matter how many times they ask, I will not go.”

Reflecting on past encounters, he shared, “There was one occasion when I was summoned, and out of respect for the person who requested my presence, I went. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s the truth.”

He added another instance when he attended an event due to respect for the archbishop, not expecting the presence of political figures such as the vice president.

Emphasising his independence, Owusu-Bempah said, “I did not support them with prayers in exchange for a pledge to build my church if they won. They made the promise themselves, not me. So, I am not worried if it didn’t happen.” He expressed his reliance on divine providence rather than human promises, affirming his faith that “it is God’s temple, and in His own time, He will glorify His name.”

Public fury over ‘Tinubu’s budget’: SUVs for him and wife, a yacht and villa renovation

The Nigerian populace is grappling with a tempest of discontent following the unveiling of President Bola Tinubu‘s first supplementary budget.

Amidst a nationwide cost of living crisis, the proposal starkly includes a lavish array of vehicles for the president and his spouse, alongside opulent expenditures such as a presidential yacht and extensive renovations to his villa.

This supplementary budget, seeking funds over and above the previous year’s allocation sanctioned by Tinubu’s predecessor, arrives at a time when the Nigerian government is urging its citizens to endure hardships partially precipitated by the president’s sweeping economic reforms.

The nation, Africa’s most densely populated, is currently beset by rampant joblessness, skyrocketing food costs and a currency in freefall.

At the heart of the controversy is a staggering 1.5 billion-naira allocation earmarked for the procurement of SUVs for the office of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu – a sum that overshadows the budgets of several federal colleges.

Additionally, the budget outlines an allocation of nearly 6 billion naira for presidential SUVs, a figure that dwarfs the proposed funding for a student loan programme aimed at aiding impoverished families.

The presidency’s spokesman, Temitope Ajayi, has refuted claims of extravagance and decried the media’s portrayal of the budget, stating in a column published by a local news outlet that the “public attack” stems from a “very simplistic way some of the line items are described by civil servants who prepare the budget.”

Ajayi insists that the new vehicles are designated for use by aides and civil servants, not President Tinubu himself.

Notwithstanding, federal lawmakers have yet to consent to the budget items, which include the contentious 5 billion-naira presidential yacht listed under the navy’s planned expenditures.

It’s worth noting that the legislature itself has not been immune to criticism, having previously been condemned for acquiring an array of expensive SUVs.

President Tinubu, who assumed office in May, has terminated a popular fuel subsidy and removed currency controls, resulting in an acute spike in prices and significant devaluation of the naira.

Consequently, many Nigerian households find themselves struggling to make ends meet in a country where a stark 40% of its over 200 million citizens subsist in extreme poverty.

The previous year saw Nigeria allocate roughly 96% of its revenue to debt servicing, and the government is currently poised to raise 9 trillion naira to finance the forthcoming year’s budget. With the nation in the throes of financial strain, the proposed opulence in the supplementary budget is inciting public ire.

    I don’t go to Akufo-Addo anymore – Owusu-Bempah

Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, the leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, has revealed his disengagement from President Nana Akufo-Addo and his political entourage.

Speaking to Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on OkayFM’s ‘Ade Ahye Abia’, Owusu-Bempah detailed his current stance regarding his involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders.

“I no longer go to him, and even if they call for me, I will not go. No matter how many times they ask, I will not go,” Owusu-Bempah stated, emphasizing the decisiveness of his withdrawal. He admitted attending past meetings, one out of respect for an unnamed individual and another due to the archbishop’s request, not the political leaders themselves. “If I had known they would be there, I wouldn’t have gone,” he added.

Owusu-Bempah also reflected on the time leading up to the 2016 elections when he engaged in dedicated prayer sessions for the NPP leaders, including Nana Akufo-Addo and his wife.

“It is true that, for nine months, I used to pray for the NPP leaders, thrice every week, and Nana Akufo-Addo was part of this process,” he confirmed. During this period, Akufo-Addo’s wife made a promise to build a church if they won the elections, to which he simply responded, “Glory be to God.”

However, the cleric clarified that his prayers were not contingent on the fulfillment of this promise. “However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will,” he elaborated, negating any accusations of bitterness over the unfulfilled promise. His financial ethics within his ministry were also highlighted, noting, “I am also someone who doesn’t like to forcefully extract money from people.”

Dismissing any suggestions of animosity towards the NPP for not building the church, Owusu-Bempah insisted his love for them remains unchanged. “If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them,” he affirmed, stressing his ongoing prayers for the President.

He reinforced his belief in divine rather than human promises. “If people make promises to me, I don’t rely on them. I look up to God because only His promises are sacred,” Owusu-Bempah stated, indicating his ultimate trust remains with the higher power.

Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has opened up about some of his preferred methods in church administration, expanding on the subject counselling.

In a candid interview on OkayFM with host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, Rev Owusu-Bempah, made it clear that financial transactions have never been a precondition for pastoral counselling or meetings in his church.

“I have never charged for counselling in my church,” Owusu-Bempah stated emphatically. “I have never asked for money before someone could see me. No, I don’t do that.”

He further emphasized his ethical approach to financial contributions from his congregation, saying, “It should come from your heart, believing that you can use it to support the man of God and his ministry.”

“I am also someone who doesn’t like to forcefully extract money from people. I am very disciplined in that regard. If you choose to do so, we won’t stop you because the work of God requires financial support,” he added.

Owusu-Bempah also touched on his relationship with the political sphere, notably his interactions with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders and President Akufo-Addo.

“It is true that, for nine months, I used to pray for the NPP leaders, thrice every week, and Nana Akufo-Addo was part of this process. His wife was also involved,” he disclosed.

However, he clarified that he held no expectations regarding the promise. “I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will.”

He was keen to dispel any notion of transactional support in his prayers for the political leaders. “I did not support them with prayers in exchange for a pledge to build my church if they won. They made the promise themselves, not me.”

However, he admitted that he no longer has a close relationship with the president as he used to and that he does not visit him anymore.

“I no longer go to him or and even if they call for me, I will not go. No matter how many times they ask, I will not go. There was one occasion when I was summoned, and out of respect for the person who requested my presence, I went. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s the truth,” he said, indicating a withdrawal from political engagements despite previous invitations, which he attended out of respect for other clergy members, not the political figures themselves.

Owusu-Bempah reveals what he did for Akufo-Addo and NPP before 2016 victory

Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has in a candid interview on OkayFM with Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, host of ‘Ade Ahye Abia’, made some enlightening revelations regarding his interactions with some leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before their 2016 election victory.

Reverend Owusu-Bempah confirmed that he consistently prayed for the NPP leaders and Nana Akufo-Addo, as well as Akufo-Addo’s wife, throughout a period of nine months leading up to the elections.

“It is true that, for nine months, I used to pray for the NPP leaders, thrice every week, and Nana Akufo-Addo was part of this process. His wife was also involved,” he disclosed.

Interestingly, he mentioned a promise made by Akufo-Addo’s wife, who assured him of a church building as a token of gratitude should they win the elections. He recalled her words: “If, by God’s grace, we win the 2016 elections, we will build your church for you.” To which he replied, “Glory be to God.”

Despite the promise, Owusu-Bempah expressed no hard feelings over the unmaterialised pledge. “However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will,” he stated.

The clergyman also clarified that his prayers were not a quid pro quo for the promised church building. “In any case, I did not support them with prayers in exchange for a pledge to build my church if they won. They made the promise themselves, not me. So, I am not worried if it didn’t happen,” he explained.

He underscored his ultimate faith in divine rather than human promises. “If people make promises to me, I don’t rely on them. I look up to God because only His promises are sacred,” Owusu-Bempah affirmed.

Emphasizing his principled approach to ministry and finances, Owusu-Bempah shared his philosophy regarding monetary contributions. “Because it is God’s temple, and in His own time, He will glorify His name. I am also someone who doesn’t like to forcefully extract money from people. I am very disciplined in that regard,” he asserted.

Addressing speculations about any resentment due to unfulfilled promises, he categorically dismissed such claims. “…to say that I aligned myself with the NPP or did something for Akufo-Addo expecting him to build my church if he won, and that I am now bitter because it didn’t happen, is far from the truth,” he remarked.

Although the promise was not kept, Owusu-Bempah maintains a steadfast affection for the party and its leaders. “If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same,” he commented, adding that he continues to pray for Akufo-Addo.

“I don’t even entertain such thoughts. If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same. Whenever I kneel down in prayer, I still remember him [Akufo-Addo] in my prayers,” he said.

Owusu-Bempah, however says, he has decided not to indulge in any future engagements with Akufo-Addo and his close circle.

“However, I no longer approach him, and even if they request my presence, I will not go,” he said, noting that past attendances were out of respect for others, not due to any political affiliations.

“No matter how many times they ask, I will not go. There was one occasion when I was summoned, and out of respect for the person who requested my presence, I went. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s the truth. There was a time when I was invited, and I went because of the archbishop, not because of them. I didn’t even know they would be there. When I arrived, the vice president and several other people were present. If I had known they would be there, I wouldn’t have gone.” he noted.

LIST: The ‘lavish’ demands Gifty Gyan reportedly made in court

The divorce case between Asamoah Gyan, the former Black Stars captain, and his ex-wife Gifty, has come to a close, with a judgment delivered by an Accra High Court on October 31, 2023.

The court officially ended the marriage, which began in 2013, issuing orders concerning the paternity and custody of the couple’s three children, as well as division of their landed and vehicular properties.

Gyan, reacting publicly for the first time to the court’s decision, stated on a Twitter (now X) post, “I have taken the outcome maturely and have ultimately retained a large chunk of my wealth.”

What Gifty asked for and what she received

    Demands That Were Rejected:

    • Gifty Gyan had initially sought an alimony payment of US$1 million. The court rejected this demand.
    • She also aimed for a share of Asamoah Gyan‘s stake in several businesses. The court, however, stated that she failed to prove that Gyan had a stake in these businesses, and therefore rejected this request.
    • Gifty Gyan wanted a share of properties known as an East Legon mansion and Baby Jet Heights. These too were dismissed by the court, stating they were not spousal properties.
    • Finally, her request for costs and legal fees was also not granted.

    What She Was Granted:

Contrary to her earlier demands, what Gifty Gyan was granted was considerably less, but still notable:

    a. A mansion located in the UK owned by Asamoah Gyan b. A four-bedroom house at Spintex in Accra c. Ownership of land intended for a fuelling station in Prampram d. Two vehicles: a BMW and an Infiniti

As the dust settles on this high-profile divorce, both parties appear to be taking steps to move on with their lives. While the court has made its orders clear, the scrutiny surrounding this case will likely continue to be a topic of public conversation for some time.

Asamoah Gyan’s ex-wife reportedly wanted £5K monthly, $1M, 50% interest from his businesses, cars, and more

The High Court (Divorce and Matrimonial Division) in Accra, Ghana, has brought to a close the 10-year marriage between Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan and his ex-wife, Gifty Gyan. Presiding over the case was Honourable Judge Hafisata Ameleboba JA.

The divorce proceedings were concluded on October 31, 2023. In addition to dissolving the marriage that began in 2013, the court issued rulings concerning the custody of the couple’s three children, as well as decisions on landed and vehicular properties for Gifty Gyan.

Asamoah Gyan, former captain of the Black Stars, reacted publicly for the first time since the court’s ruling. In a post on the social media platform Twitter (now known as X), Gyan stated that he had ultimately won the case contrary to earlier reports.

Gifty Gyan according to dennislawnews.com, had reportedly filed a cross-petition in February 2019 in which she sought a monthly maintenance fee of £5,000 and a lump sum of $1 million USD from Asamoah Gyan.

Additionally, she petitioned for a 50% share in several properties and businesses owned by her ex-husband. Among these were multiple houses, a printing press in Dubai, a warehouse, and a range of luxury vehicles. She also requested a 50% stake in business entities such as Baby Jet Airlines, Jetlink Events and Logistics, Gyan Investment Ghana Limited, Paradise Pac Drinking Water, Baby Jet Boxing Promotions, and BJ Sports Bar and Restaurant.

Contrary to what she initially sought, the court reportedly granted her the ownership of Asamoah Gyan’s UK mansion, a four-bedroom house at Spintex in Accra, and land meant for a fuelling station in Prampram. She was also awarded two cars—a BMW and an Infiniti. However, Gifty Gyan’s request for alimony of $1 million was rejected, as was her claim to a share of Asamoah Gyan’s stake in several businesses. The court stated that Gifty Gyan failed to prove her ex-husband’s stake in these businesses. Additionally, her requests for legal fees and costs were dismissed.

The court ordered that a monthly maintenance fee of GHC 25,000 be given to Gifty Gyan for the upbringing of their children.

The Honourable Court noted Gifty Gyan’s “substantial contribution to the acquisition of the properties” in its ruling. This contributed to the court’s decision to grant her certain properties and assets.

Details of what Asamoah Gyan reportedly told his ex-wife after the court ruling

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has disclosed details of a conversation he had with his ex-wife, Gifty Oware, after the High Court ruling on their marriage annulment on October 31, 2023.

Gyan revealed that the talk was prompted by attempts by some individuals to manipulate the public’s perception of the case’s outcome.

Speaking on Asempa FM on November 1, 2023, Gyan emphasised the importance of maintaining privacy over their marital issues, however, “I spoke to Gifty that because of what is going on, I would come out and defend myself. I spoke to her and told her point blank that I have kept quiet on the issue and allowed all kinds of false narrative about me,” he said.

While Gyan did not accuse his ex-wife of leaking the ruling to the media, he did issue a warning to those close to her. “I’m talking today because I have already warned her,” he added.

Gyan felt vindicated by the court’s decision, which he believes affirmed his stance that the marriage was null and void. “I have been vindicated because the court has ruled in favour of me and what I wished, they granted it,” he said.

The Accra High Court’s ruling on October 31 brought an end to a three-year divorce battle between the former Ghana international and Gifty. The court dissolved the marriage, originally contracted in 2013, and issued consequential directions regarding the couple’s three children.

Previously, Gyan had denied paternity, prompting the court to administer a DNA test. The test proved him to be the father.

The law firm handling the case, Dennis Law, stated, “Initially, Asamoah Gyan had denied paternity of their three children, seeking an annulment of their marriage. However, the court, in its decision on October 31, 2023, established that the three children are indeed the progeny of Asamoah Gyan.”

The court also outlined financial responsibilities for the upkeep of the children post-divorce. “Asamoah Gyan is obligated to pay Gifty Gyan a monthly sum of 25,000 Ghana cedis,” noted the law firm. This sum is specifically designated for the children’s upbringing and welfare, and does not cover other expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, flight tickets, and other childcare-related costs.

Asamoah Gyan’s disclosure comes at a crucial time as both parties aim to move forward following the public and legal scrutiny of their marriage. The footballer’s statements suggest a willingness to defend his reputation, even as he emphasises the importance of privacy for the sake of their children.

Ghanaian youth are very irresponsible with healthcare and life choices – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, has described Ghanaian youth as showing a lack of responsibility for their health. This remark comes amid a rising incidence of cases among young individuals requiring dialysis.

While Sam George acknowledges that not all individuals may bear direct responsibility for their health issues, he condemns the widespread neglect of adopting safe and healthy lifestyles among the youth.

“I am not a fan of hospitals, but my wife has insisted you need to get yourself checked at the year, mid-year… just to be sure everything is intact. We all just need to take care of ourselves, and I have been talking about it, especially with this dialysis thing, you know, and I am saying that, when you look at people reporting with kidney failures, it is young people. It is more and more young people. And it’s because we… look, I’m going to say something that Ghanaian youth will not be very happy about, but we are very irresponsible when it comes to our healthcare and our life choices,” Sam George said in an interview on Joy News’ AM Show.

Sam George specifically pointed out some unhealthy behaviours among the youth today. “They are smoking like locomotive engines. They have dumped cigarettes and have jumped on that killer called shisha. You drive around Accra, East Legon and you see young people puffing off steam like locomotive engines, all in the name of fashion. They’ve flavoured death for you in pineapple, watermelon, whatever, and you are licking death,” he stated.

“We are not eating well, alcohol, for a country of just 33 million people, we have almost 100 different types of bitters. All kinds of concoctions in the name of aphrodisiacs. We are drinking the wrong things, eating the wrong things, and smoking our lungs into oblivion. We need to check our life choices as a country. It is a problem; it is a pandemic!” He further expressed.

Expanding his concern to fellow lawmakers, Sam George cited the recent loss of Philip Atta Basoah, the Member of Parliament for Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, as a cautionary tale. He believes that stress played a significant role in Basoah’s sudden passing, which he linked to an extended parliamentary meeting the two had attended the night before Basoah’s death.

To mitigate such risks, Sam George urged not only the public but also lawmakers, who often engage in lengthy parliamentary debates, to make regular check-ups and health assessments a priority.

“Recently we lost a member of parliament, Hon. Basoah, may his soul rest in peace. It was stress-related. We need to manage this, especially for members of parliament who sit for hours on end,” he added.

Sam George’s comments underline the urgent need for a renewed focus on public health and responsible lifestyle choices among Ghana’s youth.
