Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted that Government intends to upgrade the Animal Health and Production College at Pong Tamale in the Savelugu District of the Northern Region to a University of Agriculture.

This, he said, would promote the study of agriculture which is the mainstay of the people in the area and build their capacity towards boosting agriculture production.

Vice President Bawumia made this known when he paid a courtesy call on Yaa Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani at his Palace in Savelugu.

The Vice President emphasised the importance of agriculture to the country’s development, stating that upgrading the College would make a significant impact in the lives of the people in the area.

“The Akufo-Addo government intends to upgrade the Pong Tamale Agriculture College to a university to help promote the study of agriculture at an advanced level which will directly impact positively on food production among others,”Dr Bawumia stated.

It is expected that the successful upgrading of the Pong Tamale Animal Health and Production College would bring to two the number of public universities in the Northern Region.

Currently, the only public university in the northern part of the country is the University of Development Studies (UDS).

The Pong Tamale Animal Health and Production College was established in 1922 at Tamale by the British Colonial Administration, with the intention to increase the health of livestock.

Unfortunately, in 1925, the school was closed down due to funding challenges.

  • ‘Lets stop witchcraft accusations’ – GPA

The Ghana Psychological Association (GPA) has asked the citizenry to say “no to witchcraft accusations.”

“We should stamp out this unscrupulous and unacceptable trend of behaviour,” the Association said and stated its willingness to avail counselling services to victims.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Mrs Joy Anima Debrah, the National Public Relations Officer of the GPA, copied to the Ghana News Agency.

It said it was not enough for the Government to outlaw witch camps, “instead, we should go beyond intensive education on matters of this nature and punish perpetrators of this inhumane practice”.

The Association said it was very much interested in outcomes of the cases and called for multi-sectoral approach to handling such occurrences.

The statement called on civil society organisations to pay more attention and resources to changing harmful belief systems, which jeopardized the lives of others, adding, “We seem to forget that these old women are mothers, sisters and friends who need our love and support.

The statement said over the past few months, the Association had followed with great concern, troubling media reports of barbaric attacks on old women in the society.

It recalled that on the 24th July, various media platforms reported that Madam Akua Denteh, a 90-year-old native of Kafaba in the Savanna Region, had been lynched over witchcraft accusation.

“Despite the widespread civil society condemnation of that inhuman act and police action against the perpetrators, barely a month after, we have been confronted with yet another mob attack against a 60-year-old woman in the same region,” it said.

“Madam Meri Ibrahim from Sumpini is now fighting for her life, with her middle finger severed.”

It said the story in the media had it that, Madam Meri and other women in that community were alleged to have bewitched a gentleman leading to her brutal ordeal after, which her house was brought down with all her property destroyed.

The statement noted that unfortunately, many old women over the years had suffered violations embedded in cultural beliefs.

The Association said belief in witchcraft was common in most African societies and Ghana was not exempted and that often, misfortune, ailments as well as mishaps were attributed to witchcraft and the engrained beliefs in ostracizing them was unlawful, outdated and derogated victims.

It said the Association acknowledged the hardship and consequent stressful effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on humans, which had also exposed “our lack of knowledge in the areas of aging and degenerative mental disorders like dementia that is misinterpreted.”

The Association said it “endorses more scientific and humanistic paradigms that adopt positive approaches including psychosocial counselling and strictly disapproves any unlawful and criminal behaviours hidden in cultural practices that oppress and discriminate against old women especially.”

  • NaBCo impacting positively on graduates in Bolgatanga

The Implementation of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo) by the government is positively impacting on the livelihoods of trainees in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, Mr Johnson Agolmah, the Municipal Coordinator has said.

He said apart from the monthly stipends of GH¢700.00, which was hitherto difficult to come by, many graduates who completed various tertiary institutions and could not get employment had secured permanent employment through the initiative.

Mr Agolmah said this in Bolgatanga during an entrepreneurship and career pathways training organized by NaBCo for trainees in the Municipality.

NaBCo is one of the numerous interventions being introduced by the Government to tackle the issues of graduate unemployment by engaging 100,000 graduates in seven sectors of the economy including; education, health, local government, agriculture, entrepreneurship, revenue and digitization.

The main objective of the programme is to provide opportunities for graduates and Ghanaian youth to be equipped with employable skills to enable them establish their own businesses or be well prepared for the job market.

After almost two years of implementation, the Municipal Coordinator explained that out of the 926 trainees who were initially engaged in the various models in the Municipality, 266 graduates had secured permanent jobs and exited the programme, reducing the number 660.

The Coordinator noted that, the contribution of most of the trainees towards the development and growth of their respective agencies was enormous and were able to build their skills and knowledge and ready for the job market.

“A lot of the institutions that we have placed our trainees into have given us success stories of our trainees, even though there are also some bad stories, the success stories of our trainees outweigh the bad stories.

“For example, in the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, a lot of our trainees have been collecting revenue which increases the revenue base of the Assembly and also help build the skills of the trainees and many of the trainees have been placed in various departments including; budget, works, Human Resource and revenue,” he noted.

The Municipal Coordinator said the NaBCo programme was not to provide permanent employment for all trainees but to equip them with the necessary experience to secure for themselves jobs elsewhere.

It was to further build their capacities to establish their own businesses instead of over relying on government for permanent employment and that would help reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

Dr Wilfred Akapanga, the Upper East Regional Manager of Quality Life Assurance Company, who took the trainees through various trainings on entrepreneurship and career development, said success could only be achieved through hard work.

He explained that whilst it was prudent to pray for success, it was imperative for the trainees to work hard to put their innovative ideas to reality in order to secure the success they yearned for.

He, therefore, urged the trainees to take advantage of such trainings to build the knowledge of starting their own businesses instead of depending on government for employment opportunities.

  • Agyapa deal: Nothing wrong with Osafo-Maafo’s son and Gabby’s involvement – Baako

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Kweku Baako has jumped to the defence of Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo’s son and President Nana Akufo-Addo’s cousin’s involvement in the Agyapa Minerals Royalties deal.

    Background

Parliament approved five agreements on Friday, August 14, 2020 to allow Agyapa Royalties Ltd, a Special Purpose Vehicle, to secure about $1 billion for Ghana’s minerals sector.

The deal is to permit Agyapa Reyalties Ltd to operate as an independent private sector entity and raise funds from the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) and London Stock Exchange (LSE).

The Agyapa Royalties deal is intended for the country to gain maximum value from its mineral resources by monetizing its mineral income in accordance with the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Act of 2018 (Act 978).

    Senior Minister’s Son & President’s Cousin’s Roles

The Senior Minister’s son named Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo and Gabby Otchere-Darko, a relative of the Finance Minister and the President of Ghana have been appointed as members of the Agyapa Mineral Royalties firm to handle the deal.

The roles of these two gentlemen have been met with vehement opposition as members and leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well as the Minority in Parliament share a strong opinion that the selection of the Senior Minister’s son and President’s cousin is a conflict of interest.

Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Spokesperson on Finance speaking on Joy News file programme, questioned the selection process asking ”was there a system in place that this government advertised for any Ghanaian to be able to have that opportunity; what type of recruitment process was done..?”

    Kweku Baako’s Take

Addressing the issue during a panel discusson on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kweku Baako also questioned the opposition’s logic in citing a conflict of interest in the deal.

According to him, the fact that Kofi Osafo-Maafo and Mr. Otchere-Darko are related to the top government officials and the President does not disqualify them from handling the minerals royalties deal.

To Mr. Baako, he would see the importance in discussing the issues if the argument was about whether the gentlemen have the expertise to secure the deal or not, but they being relatives of the Senior Minister and President is inconsequential to the deal.

He further alluded to similar issues that characterized some events in the past.

He cited former President J.A Kufour’s son whose ownership of the African Regent Hotel became a political topic with the former President receiving bashings from his political opponents and publications where former President John Mahama’s brother, Ibrahim Mahama was said to own Merchant Bank.

In 2017, Ibrahim Mahama, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers and Planners Ltd, was reported to have owned the Merchant Bank but managers of the bank denied the reports stressing he is neither a shareholder nor owner of the bank.

In all of these incidents among others, Kweku Baako, speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, noted that he consistently defended Mr. Kufour’s son as well as Ibrahim Mahama on the lines that they have the right to own businesses provided they use the right means.

He is today standing by the same conviction that the selection of the Senior Minister’s son and Gabby Otchere-Darko in the Agyapa Minerals Royalties deal is in right order.

“We have to be consistent. We have to be coherent . . I don’t expect everybody to agree with me and I expect people who disagree to vehemently, if they like violently, disagree with me and criticize me . . . The way we’re going around this politics, the so-called conflict of interest relative to political office holders over the period, I see a certain huge area of inconsistency and incoherence and I’m worried about that. This is not going to be the last time this will happen; you bet me!”

  • Testing regime for passengers at KIA reliable – FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Wednesday debunked the assertion that the COVID-19 Testing regime used for passengers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is unreliable.

A statement issued and signed by Mrs Delasse A. Darko, the Chief Executive Officer of FDA, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday, said the device at KIA “detects the ANTIGEN (SARS-CoV-2 Virus) by fluorescence technology,” adding that it was, therefore, not a Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit.

  • Only NDC government have developed Upper West Region Mahama

Almost all the development projects in the Upper West Region are the handiwork of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Mahama has claimed.

Speaking during a call on the Wa Na, as part of his campaign tour of the region, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said should he win the upcoming 7 December 2020 polls, his next government will increase development in the region.

According to Mr Mahama, the “NDC has a particularly strong relationship with the Upper West Region because, as everybody knows, the history of the Upper West Region is related strongly to the NDC party”.

The Upper West Region, he noted, “was established by the founder of our party, Jerry John Rawlings, and since its founding, almost every development project that has taken place in the Upper West Region has taken place under an NDC administration”, Mr Mahama asserted.

“And, so”, the former President noted, “the Upper West Region can rest assured that anytime the NDC is in power, it will get access to its fair share of the national cake”.

“As the Wa Na said in his statement, we have been practising this democracy since 1992 and Ghanaians have become very discerning. They are not people that you can take for granted or take for a ride”.

“And, so, his caution to politicians to be careful about indulging in false promises, is a very well-placed one”, Mr Mahama reiterated, adding: “Any political party that comes with the notion that it can promise heaven just to win political power will be very disappointed on the day of the elections because the results will reject those false promises”.

“NDC is a political party that takes truth and honesty seriously and we promise only what we can deliver”.

“Unfortunately, many others have not done the same and, therefor, they have made our people lose faith in our democratic experiment”, Mr Mahama added.

NDC will restore honesty and truth to government and build the confidence of our people in our democracy.

Mr Mahama also accused the Akufo-Addo government of letting the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa, which, according to him, was 95 per cent done during his administration, go waste for a long time until it was eventually operationalised.

Mr Mahama said should he win the upcoming 7 December 2020 polls, his next government will provide the necessary seed money to enable the hospital run effectively.

“As the Wa Na stated; in office, we had completed many projects in Wa. The Upper West Regional Hospital is a good example”, Mr Mahama said.

“That hospital should have been completed long ago but at the time I left office, it was essentially 95 per cent complete”, he recalled.

According to him, “It is a pity that it took so many years for the present government to eventually operationalise the hospital, but even then, as we all know, the hospital is struggling because it does not have seed money to be able to provide the quality treatment that the people of the Upper West [region] deserve”.

“And, so, I want to assure my father, the Wa Na and the elders and the people of Wa and the Upper West Region that one of the first things we will do when we come into office is to provide the seed money for that hospital to be able to run efficiently”, Mr Mahama promised.

  • Expired fertilisers not ours COCOBOD

The Management of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has denied claims that its fertilisers meant for cocoa farmers have been left to expire.

This comes on the back of a video circulating on social media, alleging that some fertilisers supposed to be given to cocoa farmers free of charge by COCOBOD has been left to expire.

“We wish to inform the general public that the alleged expired fertilisers in question, as seen in the video circulating on social media, do not belong to COCOBOD and as such the cocoa authority does not bear responsibility for them,” COCOBOD said in a statement.

According to the Board, its checks found that the fertilisers belong to the Cocoa Abrabopa Association, a private entity and stakeholder within the cocoa industry, which supplies fertilisers and other agrochemicals to cocoa-farmers across the cocoa-growing regions in Ghana.

The statement explained that: “Cocoa Abrabopa Association engaged the services of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at Assin Fosu for the disposal of 9,600 bags of expired Nitrabor fertilisers from their district warehouse, adjacent Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s Kencity House at Assin Dompem. The expired fertilisers were acquired in 2014.

“The EPA carried out the haulage, fumigation and disposal of the expired fertilisers between 23rd and 24th August 2020. However, during this process, some of the fertilisers were diverted away from their intended disposal sites, supposedly at the plea of farmers who wanted to apply them on their farms regardless of the present state of the fertilisers.

“Some of the expired fertilisers turned up at Assin Dompem, where the video circulating on social media was taken.

“While we appreciate that some farmers (like the ones seen in the video) and members of the general public may be genuinely misled into attributing the fertilisers to COCOBOD, we have also noticed that others may be purposely trafficking in these falsehoods.”

COCOBOD further assured the public that, as the regulator for the cocoa industry, it takes the matter seriously and have tasked its officers in the district, to engage with cocoa farmers to prevent the application of any of the fertilisers on farms.

COCOBOD added that it is engaging with the Cocoa Abrabopa Association and the EPA for prompt action in ensuring proper disposal of the fertilisers.
