  • Seeking self-aggrandisement motivates people into politics – Rev. Amegboe

Reverend Samuel Amegboe, Awudome Tsito Area Head of Assemblies of God Church, at the weekend asserted that the craze for most people joining politics was not for service but self-aggrandisement through looting.

“The scramble to retain or regain political power by our politicians is to have absolute power and control over the nation’s resources,” he said.

Rev. Amegboe in a chat with the Ghana News Agency, said not until politicians changed this mentality, majority of the citizenry would continue to wallow in poverty and the country’s development would retrogress.

He said the phenomena, where young people joined political fray without any work experience was worrisome, asking what their motivation was?

He said governance should be about helping the citizenry to be free from poverty, hunger and disease.

Rev. Amegboe wondered why the ongoing voter registration exercise should turn bloody if not because of the selfish interests of few individuals.

He appealed to those who wield political power not to be drowned in their selfish interests and plunder the resources of the country but use that power for accelerated development of the country.

The Reverend Minister advised Ghanaians especially the youth not to allow themselves to be used as “tools of destruction by these self-seeking and greedy people”.

He appealed to religious leaders to continue to use the pulpit to fearlessly preach against the evils in the society and also educate the citizenry to be law-abiding.

Rev. Amegboe also advised people fanning political violence to desist from such activities as no country could develop in an atmosphere of chaos and instability.

He said what the country needed at this crucial time was peace “which we must all seek and jealously guard”.

  • Atta Mills library ought to be sustained, revitalized – NDC Chairman

National chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has said, one of the ways the legacy of the late president, John Evans Atta Mills can be preserved is by ensuring that the Atta Mills Library is fully sustained and revitalized.

According to him, revitalizing the library will help individuals from different walks of life read about his life and leadership principles which he stood for.

Speaking in an exclusive interview in Ghanaweb at the 8th remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said “I think we need to do more, I believe that the Atta mills library in Cape Coast ought to be sustained and revitalized so that people from all walks of life can go there and read his life and leadership principle. I believe that we have to embed his leadership principle in a very transformational leadership system that will guide the country in future. And so even though we continue to celebrate him, I think we need to do more in terms of the principle that he stood for so that we will always remember Professor Mills and be able to stand for what he believes in. I think it is very very important we do that” He said.

The John Evans Atta Mills Presidential Library, a memorial and research facility in Cape Coast, was closed down 2018, 2 years after it was inaugurated by former President John Dramani Mahama.

The library which is a 100-capacity auditorium, 45-seater multi-media centre, seminar rooms and a museum that holds historical materials that reflect the life and works of the late President was closed down due to lack of funds to run it.

It is based on this that the National chairman is calling for the reopening and the revitalization of the library to ensure that there is access to educational material concerning the life and legacy of the late Evans Atta Mills to ensure the development of the nation.

My attention has been drawn to the most despicable act of lynching of a 90-year-old-woman at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savanna Region. I condemn in the strongest terms this barbaric act which has left me, like many I can imagine, deeply sad, indeed.

The elderly in our society rather deserve our love and protection, not this level of unspeakable cruelty. Old age cannot be synonymous to witchcraft. It is time to build a fair, just and gender sensitive society that respects and values everyone, no matter their age.

It is my expectation that the security agencies will swiftly investigate and bring the culprits to justice.

Moving forward, I hope we shall all work together to raise the level of public education to forestall such tragic occurrences.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and may the soul of this unfortunate victim rest in peace.

  • Government to decide on the reopening of all schools soon – President Akufo-Addo

Government will decide when schools will reopen after the current examinations involving final year students are concluded by mid-September, President Akufo-Addo says.

“I will keep you fully informed about the outcomes,” the President gave the assurance on Sunday night in his 14th COVID-19 updates to the nation.

He said the safety and good health of students and staff had been the paramount considerations in the reopening of schools, as part of the phases of easing of the COVID-19 restriction measures, adding that the state would therefore, continue to insist on full adherence to the enhanced COVID-19 protocols, especially within the schools.

“That is why, as has already been widely publicised, we undertook a massive mobilisation and deployment of logistics to our educational facilities to help ensure that learning is conducted in an atmosphere of safety, as we continue to limit and contain the spread of the virus in our country. ”

He said since his last address to the nation about a month ago, there had been over 75,000 persons, comprising students, teachers and non-teaching staff, in the Junior High Schools returning to school to prepare for and sit the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Besides, on Monday July 20, the 370,000 final year Senior High School students, who had been in school for five weeks, started writing the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

Again, 127,143 students in the Universities and other tertiary institutions have all virtually completed their final examinations.

The President said all the measures being put in place to contain the spread of the virus among the students pointed to the commitment of the Government to protect the lives of “all those involved in the phased re-openings of our schools, and I will not renege on my obligation towards either our children or their parents.

“Mercifully, we have witnessed only a few cases of infections in our Universities and other tertiary institutions; the few students who tested positive in a few of our Senior High Schools have all either recovered or are on the path to full recovery, and will write the WASSCE; and the few final year Junior High School students, who have tested positive and who are largely asymptomatic, are being managed in isolation centres, “he said.

President Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians that while the pandemic lingered on, life could not be put on hold indefinitely, and Ghana could also not remain in a never-ending crisis management situation “and that is why we have been putting measures in place to restore gradually some normalcy in our social and economic lives, as we learn to cope with the reality of the virus”.

He said the gradual reopening of the schools to enable final year students at various levels of education finish the school year and take their exams was probably the most significant measure taken by the government on the easing of the COVID-19 related restrictions.

  • President announces further easing of coronavirus related restrictions

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Sunday further eased Coronavirus restrictions, seeking to return the country gradually to a state of new normalcy after nearly five months of measures to combat the disease.

In a televised national broadcast, the President announced the lifting of restrictions on church and mosques gatherings, open air drinking spots, tourists’ sites and attractions, air and road transport and some sporting activities.

Churches and mosque, which had for the past seven weeks been holding services and prayers with not more than a 100 members over a duration of one hour per service, are now allowed to increase the number of congregants and extend worship time to two hours, starting August 1, 2020.

But religious leaders were to ensure that coronavirus safety protocols were observed to the letter as worship centres were to be well ventilated; congregants must wear face mask and stay one meter apart

Tourist sites and attractions, open air drinking spots were reopened to business, but beaches, pubs, cinemas, nightclubs however remain closed until further notice.

Also, the President gave clearance for the country’s female under-20 and under-17 teams to begin training towards the FIFA and CAF sanctioned international matches, and their handlers were to follow the set protocols for safety religiously.

However, all another team contact sports, and competitive sporting events remain suspended.

President Akufo-Addo also declared that domestic airplanes, taxis and mini-buses can now operate at full passenger capacity. Airlines and road transport owners are to ensure that passengers wore face mask and maintained set safety protocols at all material times.

The country’s frontiers however remained closed to human traffic until further notice.

But Ghanaians stranded abroad should leverage the special dispensation granted them by government to return home.

The President pointed out that with the coronavirus pandemic affecting the global economy and upsetting all facets of social and economic life, and the prediction that the virus would not be letting anytime soon, Ghanaians should, like the rest of world, learn to live with the reality of the situation until a cure is found for the disease.

He was emphatic that the disease should not bring national life to a standstill and that “We have to learn to adapt to the conditions.”

“Ghana cannot remain in a never-ending crisis management situation, and that is why we have been putting measures in place to restore gradually some normalcy in our social and economic lives, as we learn to cope with the reality of the virus.”

President Akufo-Addo noted that though some 32, 969 persons had so far contracted COVID-19 in the country, a closer look at the data showed that Ghana was “steadily on the path towards limiting and containing the virus, and, ultimately, defeating it.”

He said what should concern Ghanaians was the number of active cases, which currently stood at 3,349, showing that the country had faired extremely well in the management of the pandemic.

The consistent drop in the number of active coronavirus development, coupled with the low hospitalisation and mortality rates, the measures adopted to cope with the situation and experts advice, the President indicated, had informed Government’s decision to embark on a controlled, progressive, safe easing of restrictions to get national Life and economy back to normal.

He said government was strengthened in its determination to ensure that Ghanaians returned to their daily lives in safety, but held that the phased opening up of the country placed an individual obligation and responsibility on each and every citizen to continue to remain vigilant, respect the enhanced hygiene and social distancing protocols. “We dare not ruin the successes we have chalked over this period,” he added.

The President cautioned persons who peddled untruths about the disease to put a stop to such ‘irresponsible’ behaviour which escalates mistrust and heighten unnecessarily, the anxiety levels over the disease in the country.

He called on Ghanaians to reject persons who perpetuate falsehood, stigmatise those who had recovered from COVID-19, and engage in anti-social social behaviour, and call them out when they do so.

“The virus is no respecter of persons, and the overwhelming majority of persons who have tested positive, recover, indeed, have recovered, and are living perfectly normal lives, and pose no danger to anyone,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo was confident that the new phase in the country’s fight against the disease would create a ‘new normal” where Ghanaians would live responsibly, and constantly figure out how to go about their work, businesses, educational and social activities safely and help contain the speed of COVID-19.

“I have never wavered in my deeply-held conviction that, if each one of us embraces the safety protocols, and we continue to put our faith in the Almighty, we will emerge strongly from this crisis,” he said.

  • Party members urged to desist from political violence

Political parties have been urged to educate their members to be tolerant and desist from attacking those who do not share their views.

The Right Reverend Hayford Aduse-Poku, Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese of the Methodist Church, who made the call said party fanaticism with its attendant violence had become a great source of worry to many Ghanaians.

It was therefore important for political party leaders to educate their people to understand the value of tolerance in the promotion and sustenance of democratic rule in society.

Rt. Rev. Aduse-Poku, was speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a mission house for the Abedwum Methodist Church in the Obuasi municipality.

He said political parties should understand that they formed the minority and that, they should not do anything that would endanger the lives of people who voted for them during elections.

“It is God who declares the winner in every general election and that the various political parties should exercise patience whenever the nation goes into polls to elect a president,” Rt. Rev. Aduse-Poku pointed out.

He wondered why people should fight at registration centres and called on Ghanaians to follow the good examples of those Europeans who practise democracy in a more humane manner.

Rt. Rev. Aduse-Poku appealed to the youth not to allow themselves to be used by selfish politicians whose interest was only to win political power to amass wealth.

Mr Eric Opoku, a member of the church who is financing the project, said there was more blessing in building a house for the Lord and pledged to continue to support the work of the church to win more souls for Christ.

  • Suspected robbers gun down rubber tapper at Dompim

About 10 unidentified armed men at about 0745 hours on Friday attacked a gold dealer at James Town, located at the outskirt of Dompim in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Munincipality and in the process shot and killed a rubber tapper.

The deceased whose name was only given as Antobam is about 40 year-old.

Information gathered by Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that, the suspected robbers went under the pretense of selling gold to the victim, Madam Efua Kitiwaa and she ushered them into her office which is situated in her house.

Some of the robbers who opted to stay behind started firing warning shots and ordered the young men who were then sitting outside the victim’s compound to lay on the ground.

While the robbery was going on, the deceased who lived with his family in the vicinity was in a pub nearby mustered courage and confronted the robbers when he heard the gun shots.

  • Opinion: Stop It! The unwarranted usage of Face-shield

Whoever is promoting the wearing of face shields in Ghana is not helping the Ghanaian society (and the world) in our fight against the deadly COVID-19.

I watched with disappointment and disdain the gradual increase in the wearing of face shields instead of nose marks as one of the recommended COVID-19 safety protocols.

It seems some of our women care more about their makeups than their health…(and some men as well).

Face shield is not a replacement for nose mask. Face shield offers no protection against contracting the Coronavirus, as it has no filtration ability. At best use the face shield with a nose mask or use only a nose mask. Face shield only protects your face from splashes.

Some people are now wearing face shields (instead of nose masks) and are allowed entry to public spaces, including banking halls, schools, mosques, churches, markets, etc and we wonder why COVID-19 cases are sharply rising in Ghana. This is a contributing factor to the sudden rise of COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

The use of face shields alone (without nose masks) is totally WRONG and should not be allowed, as it offers no protection against contacting the Coronavirus.

I watched on Ghanaian TV channel a vociferous campaigner on Covid-19 pandemic in Ghana allowing a panelist on their platform displaying the same careless negligence.

At the recent Emy Awards event, the same negligence was on display with Ghanaian “celebrities” showing up only in face shields.

Some few hours ago during live telecast of News File on Joy TV, the host (Mr. Sampson Lardi Ayenini) and his panelists including the seasoned journalist (Mr. Kweku Baako Jr) and the special aid to former president John Mahama (Mrs. Joyce Mogtari) were all wearing face shields instead of nose masks.

This behavior is really disappointing, as it puts a huge hurdle on our way and breaks our spirit in our collective effort in the fight against COVID-19.

No health institution or organization in Ghana and the world has approved or will approve face shields as replacement for nose masks against COVID-19. These face shields actually were designed for health workers who come in contact with bodily fluids like blood, urine etc on regular basis and not as a substitute for Face or Nose mask.

Fellow Ghanaians, let’s do the right thing. In our national fight against COVID-19, either wear the face shield along with a nose mask or wear only the nose mask. Do NOT wear only the face shield. Only our collective (united) effort will overcome this pandemic

God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong.

  • National House of Chiefs headquarters gets facelift

The headquarters of the National House of Chiefs (NHC) has finally got a facelift after four years of renovation of the premises.

Established in the 1960s, the colonial edifice has since not seen any form of major renovations making the building some time back a death trap anytime the rain set in until 2015 when a renovation committee was set up by the House and later in 2017 it was absorbed into the Finance and Infrastructure Committee to see to its renovation.

The project, which was executed in phases, was awarded to M/S Nickseth Construction Company Limited with Architectural and Engineering Services Limited as the supervising consultant.

The building has been re-roofed and the conference hall expanded from 50 seating capacity to 105 to accommodate more members and other guests.

Apart from the expansion, the conference hall has also been remodeled with state of the art furniture and communication gadgets and fully air conditioned to suit a modern day conference hall that befitted the status of the royal house where issues of national interest were discussed.

Offices within the edifice have also been remodeled and the walls to the building have been aesthetically redesigned and reconstructed with paved and spacious car park as well as flowers and lawns completing the beauty of the environment.

The faulty drainage system has been fixed and expanded to enable free drainage at the premises to avoid flooding.

The security of the premises has also been enhanced with the provision of burglar-proof windows making the environment very safe for Nananom and staff to operate from. Mr Stephen Owusu, Public Relations Officer of the NHC, commended the contractor for good work done, in spite of the fact that the project stalled at a point due to financial constraint, forcing it to be done in two phases from 2015 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019.

Bibiani (WN/R) July 25, GNA – The leadership of the Bibiani branch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) have commended President Akufo Addo and THE government for its commitment to ensure quality, accessible and affordable education for all Ghanaian children.

“These and many others, are laudable initiatives that need to be appreciated by all well-meaning Ghanaians,” they said.

The Leaders were, however, quick to point out that there were still some imbalances and discrepancies in the provision of logistical support such as Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs), Stimulus packages and BECE registration fees.

They explained that private schools, especially those in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality and by extension, the Western North Region, were left out in the free supply of Teaching and Learning Materials for Pre-school and Lower primary, while the COVID-19 stimulous package for private school teachers was non-existent.

Private JHS were also exempted from the free BECE registration announced by the government.

The local GNAPS leadership called for urgent steps to ensure equitable distribution of resources among the students, irrespective of the type of educational institution.

They said since children in both public and private schools write the same examinations, they all need to be assisted to become responsible future leaders.

  • Sammi Awuku seen with Hawa Koomson after gunshot incident

It is becoming clear that, nothing will happen to the Special Development Initiatives Minister, over her gun-firing incident this week, despite a groundswell of public opinion from individuals, religious groups, civil society organizations and professional bodies, calling on her to either resign or be fired by President Akufo-Addo.

In what appears to be a rescue mission by the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, he had been seen touring the Awutu Senya East (Kasoa) Constituency in the company of the beleaguered Mavis Hawa Koomson, monitoring the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

The exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC), had gotten the minister moving around the Constituency with armed thugs, and personally shooting into buildings.

The gunshots forced a poor grandmother to abandon her pot of banku, rushing to save herself and grandkids. Three motorbikes were also burnt by Hawa Koomson‘s thugs in the process.

The heavy condemnation and boos Hawa Koomson received from all quarters, following the incident at the Step to Christ registration center at the Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, sent her into hibernation, until she was spotted with the NPP National Organizer, on Friday, again touring the Constituency.

After the tour, Mr Awuku, took to his facebook page with pictures and wrote “We continued our monitoring of the ongoing Voter Registration Exercise in Awutu Senya East (Kasoa), Efutu, Cape Coast and other parts of the Central Region today! Kudos to our Parliamentary Candidates, Party Executives and Our Agents for their resilience and vigilance so far. #GETINVOLVED #GETREGISTERED #4MORE4NANA”.

The NPP National Organiser is not the only one solidarizing with the minister known for her uncouth behaviour and vile language.

The NPP National Chairman, had also defended the minister, describing her as one of the calmest female representatives of the party in Parliament, who cannot be tagged as a violent person.

According to Freddie Blay, calls by National Peace Council, Christian Council, IMANI Ghana, OccupyGhana, political actors, journalists, security experts among others for the sacking of the minister, because she fired a gun at a voter registration centre, is “absolutely needless”, adding that such calls should be “totally disregarded”.

“It is most worrying to see different groups expected to be more objective in their submissions, rather fall for the propaganda and misrepresentation of the opposition NDC in relations to the matter.”

“With the unfolding evidence and facts surrounding the incident, it is clear that her actions were in self-defence to the unwarranted attacks on her and her team by masked motorists invited by the NDC to disrupt the EC registration process in her constituency,” he said.

“There is no evidence of any sort that can suggest her to be a violent individual, even in the face of extreme provocation.”

Mr Blay, a lawyer by profession and former MP for Ellembelle in the Western Region, further suggested that her critics were being insensitive.

“They have failed to evaluate the extent of fear and trauma this lady, mother and leader had experienced following the siege on her by sufficiently outnumbered armed hooligans hired by the NDC to disrupt the EC registration process.”

Hawa Koomson, has claimed she was acting in self-defence by firing the warning shots during a confrontation between her people and some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the registration centre, but the questions have been asked about the reason behind her people burning of the three motorbikes.

Interestingly, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, another leading member of the NPP and a cousin of President Akufo-Addo, has also gone to the defense of under-fire minister of Special Initiatives, saying she fired the gunshots at the registration center because she wanted to scare away some people who were out to bully her.

In a post on Facebook, Gabby, who is a lawyer, said he can’t criticize Hawa Koomson, because she sought to only defend herself.

He wrote: “In this male-dominated world of politics, I struggle to find serious fault against a woman MP, who decides to stand up to alleged bullies and she does by not pointing her gun at them, but firing in the air”.

“It is easy for you and I to feel she overreacted. She probably did. I will not doubt that. She probably panicked. Many of us have a licensed gun which we carry in our glove compartment and we pray to never feel the need to use it”.

“I am very uncomfortable joining the bandwagon to go after a woman who used a weapon, not to harm any person, but to scare away people he felt could harm her and others. I am looking at the level of venom in the attacks she is receiving. I wonder if there is a subtle misogynism at play here. This is not to say I endorse any threat of violence whether in self-defense or not by or against man or woman”.

“My problem is that when it comes to the affairs of the few women in our frontline politics my instinct is to side with them until otherwise convinced. So far, I am still trusting my instinct,”

Characteristics of her, Communications Minister, who will defend anything an NPP member does, indeed, declared her fullest support for Hawa Koomson, the Ewutu Senya East MP over her registration centre gangsterism.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful,Ã? ?Ã? in a tweet on Friday, said the Special Development Initiatives Minister, was only defending herself at a time she felt threatened.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, who is also a lawyer by profession and doubles as MP for Ablekuma West, stressed that Ms Koomson has the right to self-defence and she exercised that right, when some people alleged to be NDC, threatened her life.

“I stand with Hawa Koomson. If I had a gun on me in April 2012 when NDC [National Democratic Congress] sponsored thugs attacked me in Odododiodio, I would have shot them to protect myself. I didn’t and the rest is history,” her tweet read.

The NPP’s Director of Communication, Lawyer Yaw Buaben Asamoa, who is also MP for Adenta, also defended the Awutu Senya East MP, while speaking on ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM, he asked what Hawa Koomson’s crime is.

To him, there should be a cause for a woman to fire gunshots at a place like a registration centre, and cautioned the NDC not to pre-empt investigations by the Police, stressing Hawa Koomson deserves a hearing.

”What crime has Hawa committed? Have we concluded the investigations? How do you claim she is a criminal? Where from the big insults on her? Why can’t they wait patiently for the findings? When she goes for the Police interrogation and she is found culpable, the Police can deal with her but what if the investigations check out that she was indeed telling the truth?”, he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Command has retrieved the gun fired by the Special Development Minister, after they invited her to file her statement.

The Police retrieved the weapon and ammunition together with the license on Thursday. It was preceded by the release of four suspects namely; Sulley Razak, Majeed Amadu, Suleman Yusuf and Razak Musa on bail. They have been provisionally charged with disruption of the process, discharge of firearms without authority and causing unlawful damage.

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Central Region, DSP Irene Oppong, disclosed this after the interrogation.

“We are in possession of her gun, ammunition and the accompanying licence. The case docket is no more here at the Cape Coast regional CID but at the headquarters in Accra,” she said.

But it is unlikely the minister will be charged too although she has admitted she fired the gun.

  • Mahama donates 36 motorbikes, 18 laptops to NDC offices in Volta Region

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has received campaign support from the flag bearer of the party, former President John Dramani Mahama, as part of measures to canvass support at its grassroots, ahead of the December polls.

The regional office received some 36 new Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority-registered motorcycles and 18 Lenovo laptops on Friday, 24 July 2020 at the party’s regional office in Ho.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, Henry Ametefe, disbursed the donated items on the behalf of the former President to the leadership of the 18 constituencies.

Each constituency received two motorcycles and a laptop.

Mr Henry Ametefe asked the people to use the motorbikes to embark on a door-to-door campaign in their various areas, admonishing them to exercise caution so as to prevent accidents.

The party’s regional secretary, James Gunu told the media that the former President made the gesture to facilitate community campaign across the various constituencies since the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented political rallies from occurring.

“The motorbikes are supposed to facilitate the party work on the ground. That means that our people (campaigners) have to get closer to the doorsteps of the people. Because of the COVID-19, we are not going to have big rallies in the constituencies, definitely, we need to get our messages closer to the people at the grassroots,” he said.

He added that the laptops will also facilitate their campaign and election activities since information and technology are crucial in collating election results.

“We are in an information technology world, so we need to be abreast with the global trend, we need to be able to collate our results and we need to be able to get the information on the ground as far as the results collation is concerned,” he said.

Mr James Gunu said, winning the December polls is a must for the NDC hence the party will leave no stone unturned as far as measures to win are concerned.

“This is an election that we need to win. It is a must-win election, so everything that we need as party people to make sure that we win this election must be done,” he noted.

The party has also formed an information technology (IT) directorate in the region to work with the election committee and also to be in charge of the use of laptops.

Leadership of the Volta Region NDC thanked John Mahama and promised to ensure that the items are put to good use and geared towards achieving victory in the December polls.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Hon. Ofori-Atta noted the government’s ”Obaatan Pa Ghana Cares” initiative which he announced in his 2020 mid-year budget review in Parliament yesterday is part of the development measures.

The initiative is to raise about 100 billion cedis to cushion the economy.

The Minister was extremely optimistic that Ghana will stand on her strong feet under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.

“Since we came into power and inheriting arrears, the IMF programme and so forth; still since 2017, we have spent 900 million cedis on teacher trainees and nurses trainees which the NDC said it can never happen. In addition to that, feeding of children everyday, it used to be about 1.7 million children but we have reached almost 3 million that we feed everyday. We’ve been able to do that too. And when you take the free education that the opponents said we couldn’t do but now 1.2 million Senior High School…that also amouts to about GHC 3 billion. Someone will ask where did we get the money? Look at our introduction of NABCO that has created jobs for students who were stayed home for about 3-4 years without employment . . .

” . . you can’t give up and when you don’t and you keep thinking and you care deeply about the people as a government that cares, things come up. Because one can get people to work, then you have innovation, you have productivity and you get more and different ideas. My hope is also rarely a deep, deep belief in the capacity of the Ghanaian if he’s supported,” he stated.

  • Properly dispose of medical waste to curtail spread of coronavirus – NCCE

The Western Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Justice Yaw Ennin, has called for the proper disposal of medical waste to help curb the spread rate of COVID-19 in the country.

He suggested that the disposal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used in the various health facilities as well as used tissue paper, should be properly disposed of by qualified personal to prevent people from getting infected with the virus.

Mr Ennin who said this during the Commission’s monthly public sensitization programme on COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Registration exercise said currently, there was no measure put in place for individuals to effectively dispose off their used Personal Protective Equipment.

The sensitization programme, going on at the marketplaces, lorry terminals, churches, mosque, and other public institutions is being supported by OXFAM on theme: “Change your Attitude towards the Fight against COVID-19“.

The Regional Director noted that the fight against COVID-19 could only be achieved if people desisted from stigmatizating those who are infected with the virus, those who have recovered and observe all the safety protocols.
“If people change their attitude and strictly observe all the safety protocols, the virus will be eradicated in no time”, he stressed.

Mr Ennin noted that failure to observe the safety protocols would result in more COVID-19 cases and suggested that the law enforcement agencies should arrest people who failed to wear nose masks in public.

Touching on the ongoing registration exercise, Mr Ennin tasked the various political party agents monitoring the exercise to let the vigilantism Act 99(2019) be their guiding principle to avoid any violent confrontations.

He said the party agents should use challenge forms to challenge unqualified registrants instead of resorting to violent acts, which did not augur well for the current peace being enjoyed in the country.

Mr Ennin indicated that, apart from two isolated cases reported in Sekondi and Axim, the registration exercise in the region had been peaceful and urged political parties to help maintain the current peaceful atmosphere.

He also urged them to be law-abiding and observe all the rules and regulations of the voter registration exercise

She is heard saying, “Nobody should touch me”, then turns to the other lady and quizzes if the guy did not tell her that he is already in a relationship with her.

The guy in question appears disoriented as he does not know which of the ladies to side with following their near physical fight.

He is seen seated by the lady who was the first to arrive at his place and at a point kneels down to beg the second lady not to cause a scene, but she is obviously having none of that.

A friend of the guy is also summoned to the scene and he tries to calm tempers so they can all arrive at an amicable conclusion.

  • Political intolerance: NPP, NDC are the same Gyampo

A six-month study, spanning January to June 2020, and involving some 315 respondents purposively sampled among supporters of both the NDC and NPP has shown that the supporters of both the NDC and NPP are all intolerant. A six-month study, spanning January to June 2020, and involving some 315 respondents purposively sampled among supporters of both the NDC and NPP has shown that the supporters of both the NDC and NPP are all intolerant.

The study, undertaken by Professor Ransford Gyampo of the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, was aimed at contributing to the survival of multiparty democracy through the institutionalization of Political Tolerance among political parties and their support base.

According to Prof Gyampo, when the NDC was in government, some of its young appointees and core supporters were described by Jerry Rawlings as “babies with sharp teeth” to depict the height of intolerance among them. Regrettably, Prof Gyampo noted that the support base of the ruling NPP are also guilty of same crime of political intolerance.

He added that his research show that the support base of the two parties are intolerant, not only when their Political Parties are in power, but even in opposition.

Professor Gyampo says he intends to publish the research paper as a journal article in a scholarly journal. But he had this to say in his concluding remarks, in a brief interview with our reporter:

“The sad reality is that, some NPP apparatchiks are intolerant. But some NDC apparatchiks are also not tolerant, even in opposition. Those seeking to maintain power, must know how to tame the arrogance of power and be tolerant of dissent. Those who seek power, must also know how to comport themselves, to show a clear difference between what is there, and the alternative.

“It is boring to continue to see the two main parties as the same, in terms of their respective abilities to be tolerant. Let there be difference, if any of them is to be taken seriously by discerning election king-makers”.

  • My photo was used wrongly, I did not say GFA is corrupt – Singer Gambo

Ghanaian trap rapper, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, philanthropist and investor, Gambo Bashir, says his picture was mistaken by several media outlets for that of footballer, Bashiru Gambo.

Recently, a number of media houses carried a story headlined: ‘I told GFA not to invite me again because of corruption – Bashiru Gambo.’

Instead of accompanying the footballer’s picture with the above-mentioned story, the photo of musician Gambo was used, creating the impression that the musician was speaking against corruption at the Ghana Football Association.

However, the fast-rising singer and “Kwacha” hitmaker, has clarified that he did not say “I told GFA not to invite me because of corruption”.

Gambo is a young Ghanaian musician who released his debut track “Kwacha” on February 5, 2020.

Born in Ghana, the musician left to Guyana at an early age of 5 years but returned to Ghana at the age of 11 to continue school his basic education at SAPS and completed there in 2012.

  • Automobile Industry to spur import substitution and exports of Ghanaian products to Africa – Ken Ofori-Atta

Government says it intends to use the development in the automobile industry as a catalyst for import substitution and exports of Ghanaian products within the African region.

Speaking at the Mid-Year Policy Review in Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister said the automobile industry is considered by the government as a strategic anchor and one that has the potential to transform the economy.

“Ghana is well positioned to become the new automobile manufacturing hub in Africa”, Ken Ofori-Atta stated.

Giving details on the sector, he said the Ministry of Trade and Industry policy on Industrial Transformation Agenda is a significant step towards import substitution and boost exports within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA).

The introduction of a comprehensive Automotive Manufacturing Development Policy, government sources say, have attracted leading global automobile companies to the country.

In March this year, the Volkswagen Group rolled out the first VW locally assembled vehicle in the country. VW Ghana is currently producing six different brands of vehicles, namely Tiguan, Teramont, Amarok, Passat, Polo and Caddy,

Sinotruk, a leading global manufacturer of Heavy Duty Trucks is also assembling a variety of trucks in the country through Zonda Tec Ghana Limited.

The only indigenous Ghanaian company, the Kantanka Group has also been formally granted a license to continue their auto assembly operations in Ghana and to benefit from incentives under the Ghana Automotive Manufacturing Development Policy, Mr Ofori-Atta disclosed.

To consolidate these gains so far, the government, the Finance Minister noted, will establish an Automobile Industry Development Center in the country.

The Centre will among other things, coordinate the technical processes for licensing vehicle assemblers and manufacturers and monitor their compliance with industry regulations and standards.

The Center will also coordinate the implementation of a Vehicle Financing Scheme which will link financial institutions to individuals and groups interested in purchasing newly assembled vehicles in Ghana.

Furthermore, it will manage an Automotive Skills and Technology Upgrading Programme to provide requisite skills for the industry.

“The continued and successful implementation of these interventions is delivering real relief to our people. Effectively, we are gradually building a stronger foundation for a more inclusive transformation of our country”, the Minister concluded.
