The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has cautioned Ghanaians against indiscriminate coughing in public, as the Service heightens surveillance to avert any possible outbreak of the coronavirus disease in the country.

“Spitting and coughing indiscriminately in public places must be controlled to avert any outbreak and spread of the coronavirus”, says Dr. Kofi Issah, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Director of the GHS.

Speaking at the opening session of the 2019 annual review meeting of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Sunyani, Dr. Issah implored the general public to report suspected cases of the virus to the GHS.

He indicated that though the GHS and its partners had heightened surveillance, concerted efforts were required from all stakeholders to make the country alert, respond positively and to forestall any possible outbreak of the deadly- flu-like virus.

Dr. Issah advised health workers to treat their patients with courtesy, saying, “Under no circumstances should the sick remain at the mercy of the health worker”.

Mr. Joseph Mensah, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Director of the NHIA, said the NHIS chalked great success last year and commended the staff for their efforts.

He said plans were far advanced for four additional offices of the Scheme to be opened in the three regions, and urged the staff to intensify public education on the electronic renewal of membership.

  • Airbus saga: Is Mahama under trial, why do you want him to speak? – Inusah Fuseini questions

If you are expecting former President John Mahama to respond immediately to the Airbus alleged corruption scandal, then you will have to pull your brakes and wait a while.

This is because he has not been charged with any offence on the Airbus saga and will only talk at the appropriate time. These are the assertions of Member of Parliament for Tamale Central,Hon. Inusah Fuseini.

According to him, some people are only pouring their anger based on speculations against the former President for nothing and that will not push John Mahama to speak on the issue.

Inusah Fuseini said former President Mahama speaking on the matter will be tantamount to stampeding the investigations process by the Special Prosecutor a reason has been silent.

“He doesnt want to stampede the process,he is not going to stampede the process,he is not going to change the discourse,he is not going to change the narrative. He wants the Special Prosecutor to do his work, he is not afraid of anything because he was not engaged in any wrong doing. I can tell you the former President Mahama is as interested in the Airbus scandal as all the people of this country because it is he who has gotten the bad press,it is he who stands to benefit from a report produced by the special prosecutor”.

“He will not stampede the special prosecutor,he will not in anyway muddy the waters that is why he is staying clear from the Airbus scandal to let special prosecutor do his work. those who are calling for him to speak, are probably not aware that former President Mahama is not under trial, he has no obligation to defend himself because he has not been charged with any offence.people are just speculating and pouring anger for nothing”. He noted.

The Tamale Central MP who was speaking Daybreak Upper East however stated that, he was with no shred of doubt that John Mahama and other public officials said to be involved in the Airbus purchase will be vindicated after the investigations.

“let me assure you with all the energy in me that former President John Mahama is interested in the Airbus debacle,he is interested because he believes in his heart of heart that the investigations to be carried out by the special prosecutor will vindicate not only John Dramani Mahama but all public officials who were connected with the purchase of the airbus that is the Kaesar 295.So former President Mahama is not under trial,he has no obligation to defend himself because people are just speculating and he so he will talk and talk at the appropriate time.

  • GPRTU leaders pay courtesy call on Insurance Commissioner

Following the implementation of the Motor Insurance Database (MID) to check the menace of fake insurance stickers, the Greater Accra Regional Executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Unions Congress (TUC) paid a courtesy call on the Management of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), the Regulator of insurance entities in Ghana.

Moved by their excitement at the new development, they lauded the NIC for its bold initiative and thought it had been long overdue.

The delegation led by its Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ankrah nonetheless expressed their concerns regarding their assumption that the premium rates have been increased particularly those being charged on 2020 registered vehicles.

The Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Justice Yaw Ofori on his part explained that premiums had not been increased but because insurance companies are now complying and charging the rightly regulated premiums on particularly the 2020 registered vehicles through the database effective January 1, 2020.

Mr. Ofori bemoaned the situation when, in the past, some insurance companies were undervaluing vehicles and competed on prices rather than on service thus making it quite challenging for some of them to pay genuine claims promptly.

“Huge claims arising out of fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles had been a major headache for many insurance companies as they were not liquid enough to honour claims promptly resulting from the lower-than-regulated premiums they had charged in the past”, The Commissioner cited these as some of the reasons some members of the insuring public do not have confidence in insurance companies.

He, however, stated that with the MID, it is expected that insurance companies will be in a better position to pay genuine claims promptly to the utmost protection of policyholders and innocent third parties.

The delegation expressed their delight at the move as it has been the challenge of the leadership of the GPRTU when their members fall victim to the menace fake insurance stickers.

They lamented the situation where some of their unsuspecting member drivers were cowed into purchasing cheap motor insurance with stickers which looked exactly like the originals. The reality dawned on these drivers only after they were involved in accidents that warranted a claim which was repudiated by the Insurance Companies they were purported to have insurance cover with.

Mr. Justice Ofori expressed his appreciation to the leadership, not just for their cooperation at the new development in the Insurance sector but also saw it as an issue of national importance and had embraced the initiative that would help sustain the livelihoods of families of accident victims economically.

The MID was implemented on January 1, 2020 and is providing a centralized system from which security agencies and the general public including passengers of vehicles can check the validity of a vehicle insurance instantaneously.

The checks can be done through the use of a mobile phone, receipt of acknowledgement of transaction via a text message or by scanning a QR code on the insurance sticker by the Police MTTD.

Mr Ofori also hinted to the delegation that the NIC has since launched a nationwide training of Personnel of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) to enable a smooth enforcement of the database.

The Executives having received a conviction after having obtained these clarifications pledged their support to the Commission by way of educating their members so as not to fall prey to dealers of fake insurance and requested copies of the actual regulated premiums rates which they were provided as they used the opportunity to intimate their plans of rolling out an educational campaign to their members to which the Commission had no objection with the Management pledging their unflinching support to one of its biggest stakeholders the GPRTU.

As of February 17, the MID has recorded over 78,000 newly insured vehicles.

  • Prove that you have responsible leaders by calling Nana B to order – NDC youth to NPP

The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to call their National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye aka Nana B to order.

The NDC youth says they have received reports that he meted out some unsavoury words against NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

In a release, the NDC youth cautioned the NPP to be responsible for their utterances but if they decide to make the 2020 elections insults and vitriolic attacks, they will meet them ‘boot for boot’.

    Below is the release;

NPP SHOULD PROVE TO GHANAIANS THEY HAVE RESPONSIBLE ELDERS IN THEIR PARTY BY CALLING NANA B TO ORDER

The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has received and confirmed same, reports of unsavoury words used against the person of the Leader and Flagbearer of our party, HE John Dramani Mahama by the National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye AKA Nana B.

We make an exception of not responding to wild men on the loose with blabbermouths to react to this especially as his commentary was laced with deceit, half-truths and his own interpretation of whatever scenario he pictured in his mind of H.E John Mahama’s words.

But this is not new to us, Nana B and his party, led by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and Vice President, Dr Mahmoud Bawumia have made it their modus operandi to slight the former President at any given instance.

HE John Dramani Mahama in his right as a former President, Leader of the opposition party admonished the Electoral Commission and it’s Chairperson to be wary of embarking on activities that will plunge this nation into electoral violence as they will be rightly held responsible for that. How that turns into “irresponsible and reckless’ comment according to Nana B beats imagination.

The former President was emphatic and concise as he spoke in Twi, a language which offers no ambiguity and misrepresentation. He never mentioned chaos or anarchy, neither did he call for conflicts or violence of any kind.

It is therefore surprising for a whole National Youth Organizer of the NPP to miss this sound counsel and go to town with his own interpretation of what President John Mahama said. This says a lot about his party and how they have allowed the culture of insults to permeate their ranks. If the NPP has any virtue left in them, their elders will call him to order.

The NDC is a party made up of young people who take great care to be decorous in their public utterances. We are well aware that imploring him to retract and apologize will not amount to anything but we are giving him the benefit of doubt. And we serve notice that we can equally reply in same measure. If the NPP intends to make this elections about insults and vitriolic attacks, then we will meet them “boot for boot”.

Calling President Mahama names will not win the elections for the NPP. The Ghanaian people will decide if the politics of corruption, cronyism, nepotism, state capture, flying excavators and using Galamsey money to enrich party functionaries is better than unprecedented achievements in infrastructural development, education, health and shared prosperity for all Ghanaians.

    Signed,

    George Opare Addo,

    National Youth Organizer,

    National Democratic Congress.

  • No need for a new register, channel resources on upgrading verification system – NG-FLOVAG

New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG) has expressed their concern at the proposal of the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile new biometric voters register considering the limited time frame of 10 months to the general elections.

The logic to this proposal must consider analytically the economic and security interest to the nation, while being credible to exploradic spending of the innocent citizen tax payer’s money, which affects the very fragile peaceful democratic tending maturity.

We do affirm that the register is old enough to deserve major attention, in order to curtail corrupt menace elements of corrupt advantage that associated to its old age, but not at this material moment because it will further impose economic pressure to the national economic status.

We believe the current register credibility is not that worst that cannot survive this year election except a new is compiled, if it for the fact that Electoral Commission has identified a major economic, security, Electoral corrupt results and or insecurity if not compile a new register, then Electoral commission should point those challenges out to be dealt with instead of calling for a new register compilation.

New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG), by our objectives mandates, to represent floating voters, serves as floating voters monitoring team in all elections activities between Electoral Commission of Ghana and political parties for transparency and accountability, to increase the credibility of elections results.

The civil and the grassroots society of floating voter’s organization which we stand for, however, recommended that the EC should rather channel resources on upgrading the verification system, to improve the efficiency in voting rather than the exaggerated expenses to be used in procuring a new biometric voters register.

New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG) has observed the demonstration from some political parties, against Electoral Commission (EC) decision to compile a new biometric voter’s register in less than 10 months to the general election year.

This followed when the EC announced at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, that it was planning to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

We at New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG), believe that although the EC is an independent body and in exercise of the power conferred on it by article 45 of the 1992 Constitution to compile a register of voters and revise it at such period as may be determined by law, nevertheless, the EC is subject to rule of law.

Therefore, the rule of law at the discretion law must not be a political play of words.

In that, the Registration of Voters Regulation, 2016, (C.I. 91) provides under regulation 9(2) that the EC shall in consultation with registered political parties determine the modalities for the registration of
    voters.

The law enjoins that the EC cannot on its own motion or initiative compile a new voter’s register without discussions with political parties on the way forward.

That is why New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG) a non-partisan organization, will respect the position of the law, on the interest of floating voter’s credible compilation of a new register but not within this limited space of time because the law gave a time frame.

Moreover, the consequential issue to be dealt with is whether or not the existing biometric voter’s register is credible. From the statement of the EC, the reason to compile a new biometric voter’s register is not the lack of the credible existing register but rather the register is ‘overstretched’.

The word “overstretched” does not qualify the need for compilation of new register, given the fact that this current register was the one used to conduct the 2016 general elections, and the recent District Assembly elections, we at New Generation Floating Voters Association of Ghana (NG-FLOVAG) believe that it is very unreasonable to compile a new biometric voters register with less than 10 months left to the general elections on the sole grounds that the existing biometric voters register is overstretched
    when it is credible.

Further, we are of the view that the EC should rather channel resources on upgrading the verification system, to improve the competence credible election results, economic interest and eliminate element of corrupt election result with strong upgrading security in the biometric voters register.

Ghana is a haven of peace and stability in Sub-Sahara Africa because of our strong democratic institutions like the EC. We believe that there is the need for further dialogue among stakeholders in the upcoming general elections in 2020 to ensure that there is free, fair and transparent elections.

  • Nestle axes low sugar chocolate due to weak sales

Nestle has axed its range of chocolate that used a new low-sugar technique, less than two years after it was launched.

The Swiss food giant said demand for its Milkybar Wowsomes had been “underwhelming”.

The bars used what Nestle described as “hollow” sugar crystals to cut the amount of sugar by almost a third.

Confectionery makers have come under pressure from health authorities to cut the amount of sugar in their products.

Nestle’s Milkybar Wowsomes was the first product to use technology developed by the company that creates sugar with a more porous structure, which it likened to hollowing out the sugar crystals.

Some industry experts had seen the discovery as a breakthrough that would help Nestle take a leading position in a growing market for low-sugar products.

At the time of the launch Stefano Agostini, Nestle’s chief executive for UK and Ireland, said: “A new product like Milkybar Wowsomes introduces greater choice and allows parents to treat their children with chocolate that tastes great but has less sugar.

“We are demonstrating how we can, and will, contribute to a healthier future and that we take our public health responsibilities very seriously,” he added.

Last year, reduced sugar versions of Mars and Snickers were launched by Mars Wrigley UK, while Mondelez followed suit with low-sugar Cadbury Dairy Milk.

Nestle said it is now working on new sugar reduction technology that it aims to introduce next year.

The announcement highlights a major issue facing the world’s big processed food producers. While governments and many consumers have called for lower-sugar products, most people have yet to warm to less sweet alternatives.

Attempts to cut obesity rates have seen processed food giant Unilever this week promise to stop marketing its products to children. The maker of Twister ice cream and Popsicle ice lollies, said it would limit the use of cartoon characters in its advertising.

  • World Radio day: Reverse the shutdown of Radio stations now – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram is calling for an immediate reversal of the actions government took last year, to shutdown radio stations across the country.

According to him, the performance of the media under the Akufo-Addo-led government in the past three years has been compromised.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to rise against these actions by government for a better Ghana.

Speaking at the back of World Radio Day, Sam George said, “My wish today would be to see the reversal of the shutdown of radio stations across the country, an expedited investigation and prosecution of the killers of Ahmed Suale, an end to state intimidation and assault of journalists and a level playing field for all shades of opinion in the country be they political, religious or ethnic.”

“The World Press Freedom Index and the abysmal performance of Ghana over the past three years in the rankings is the clearest indication that the media space and its handling by government is beset with a growing canker that needs to be curtailed expeditiously. In the words of a leading clergyman in the Republic, there appears to be a sinister force of the prowl. The earlier we all collectively rise against it, the better it would be for us all.” He added

The National Communications Authority in May, 2019, shut down Radio Gold 90.5 FM and Radio XYZ 93.1 FM both based in Accra. Officials of the NCA stormed the premises of the stations with armed security personnel while they were on-air and ordered their immediate closure.

“I’m also urging the ladies in the NDC to allow the party executives to sleep with them which will always boost their confidence and promote the ideology of NDC,” he added.

His comment follows an NDC executive of the party, Chief Biney, who married a government appointee of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Afia Akoto.

He, however, challenged Chief Binney to resign as NDC’s Deputy Organiser as the party cannot trust him again after marrying an NPP.

  • Nkoranza Special School appeals for support in upkeep of students

The Nkororanza Shalom Special School for mentally handicapped is appealing to the government and the general public to support in the effective running of the school.

Headmaster of the school, Frank Owusu Amoako, made the appeal on Adom TV, saying the facility lacked basic amenities to accommodate the students comfortably.

“The school needs expansion because we have limited space. No teacher stays here after school hours aside the three house mistresses who ensure total caretaking of the many students.

It is not the best because sometimes you will be home and a call will come through to inform you some of the challenged students are roaming in town and causing havoc,” he explained.

He explained that the nature of the students demands that every staff stays on the compound to observe the status of the students but lack of finances and infrastructure has made that impossible.

Mr Amoako also revealed that the school appealed to the Nkoranza South District Assembly in the Bono Easy Region but the request was yet to be taken into consideration.

He is therefore appealing to the public and government to donate their quota in the upkeep of the children.

She has also been charged with the attempted murder of Thato Sibolla – a family friend who had been travelling with the deceased when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle two days before Thomas Thabane’s inauguration as prime minister in 2017.

  • UN Security Council calls for ‘lasting ceasefire’ in Libya

The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling for a “lasting ceasefire” in war-torn Libya, where a fragile truce has been in place since January.

The text, drafted by Britain, was approved by 14 votes out of 15, with Russia abstaining.

It was subject to weeks of wrangling, reflecting deep international divisions over Libya despite world leaders recently agreeing to end all foreign interference in the country and to uphold a weapons embargo.

The resolution affirmed “the need for a lasting ceasefire in Libya at the earliest opportunity, without pre-conditions.”

It also expressed “concern over the growing involvement of mercenaries in Libya.”

Russia had pushed to replace the word “mercenaries” with “foreign terrorist fighters,” but was unsuccessful.

Libya, Africa’s most oil-rich nation, has been mired in chaos since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Since April 2019, the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) has fought back against an offensive by military commander Khalifa Haftar, who is supported by Russia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

A fragile ceasefire was established on January 12 and at an international summit in Berlin a week later, world leaders agreed to end all foreign interference in Libya and to uphold a weapons embargo.

But there are still near-daily clashes near Tripoli and arms continue to flow into the country.

Moscow is accused of sending several thousand mercenaries from the private Russian security company Wagner to support Haftar, who controls much of the south and east of Libya. Russia denies any involvement.

During negotiations, the United States demanded the Wagner group be clearly identified in the text, diplomats told AFP, before accepting the sole mention of “mercenaries.”

The deputy US ambassador to the UN, Cherith Norman Chalet, lamented after the vote that the Council was not united.

“It’s also very unfortunate that foreign mercenaries, including from the Kremlin-linked Wagner group, are making an inclusive political solution harder to achieve,” she said.

Russia’s UN ambassador, Vasily Nebenzia, said his country abstained because of doubts in Moscow about the possibility of enforcing the resolution when the warring parties had not yet agreed to the terms of the ceasefire.

    More talks on horizon

The resolution called for continued negotiations by the joint military commission set up in January between the two sides, with the goal of achieving a “permanent ceasefire.”

This would include a monitoring system, a separation of forces and confidence-building measures.

The commission’s Geneva meeting ended Saturday without a resolution, but the UN proposed resuming talks from February 18.

The resolution also called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit proposals for monitoring the ceasefire “as soon as possible, when a ceasefire is agreed by the Libyan parties.”

It also called on regional organizations, “notably the African Union, League of Arab States and European Union” to collaborate in order to “support the UN” in its search for a political solution and supervision of a ceasefire.

More than 1,000 people have died in the clashes between Haftar and the GNA, while another 140,000 have been displaced, according to the UN.

But, at the moment, the two institutions are struggling to operate, he noted.

Mr Jinapor further stated that the Mahama administration also established the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant to support the energy sector of the economy.

“The gas processing plant has been a game-changer,” he said at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 12 February 2020.

“Today, we make an annual savings of about US$350 million per annum through import substitution from crude oil. In 2013, we imported over US$700 million of crude oil”.

“The gas processing plant has also ensured there is reliability of fuel but more importantly, today, that plant can supply 50% of our domestic LPG requirement”.

“By the time we were leaving office, we retooled and resourced BOST and then retooled and resourced TOR and procured 2 million barrels from the TEN fields so that TOR will process our own crude oil. You get a lot of byproducts from that because TOR has a capacity of about 65,000 barrels per day and that supplies half of our requirement. By the time we were leaving office, we had procured 2 million barrels”.

“Unfortunately, after we left office under very bizarre and opaque circumstances, those barrels were sold under the Akufo-Addo regime”.

“It is sad that despite all these achievements, the Akufo-Addo government is turning the clock backwards. The NPP administration has rolled back the clock of progress that we made at the time.”

  • Black Kings (and Queens) ruled Europe for almost 700 years

History confirms that the Moors ruled in Europe — primarily Spain and Portugal — for almost 700 years. They were known for their influence in European culture, but not many people know that the Moors were actually Europeans of African descent.

Moors were usually depicted as being “mostly black or very swarthy, and hence the word is often used for negro,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Several written works at the time also confirm that. The 16th century English playwrights William Shakespeare used the word Moor as a synonym for African and Christopher Marlowe used Moor and African interchangeably.

Author and historian Chancellor Williams said “the original Moors, like the original Egyptians, were black Africans.” An Arab chronicler also described Moorish Emperor Yusuf ben-Tachfin as “a brown man with wooly hair.”

In European Art, Moors are also often shown with African features: pitch black, frizzled hair, flat and wide face, flat-nosed, and thick lips. The Drake Jewel, a rare documented piece of jewel from the 16th century, seemed to show a profile of a Black king dominating the profile of a white woman.

Moreover, Moors were known to have contributed in areas of mathematics, astronomy, art, cuisine, medicine, and agriculture that helped develop Europe and bring them from the Dark Ages into the Renaissance.

Generations of Spanish rulers have allegedly tried to abolish this era from the historical record. But recent archaeology determined that Moors indeed ruled in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years — from 711 A.D. to 1492.

  • Today in 2005: 130 Ghanaians stranded in Iraq

About 130 Ghanaians who were promised a “better life” in Kuwait were left stranded after their arrival in the country in 2005.

The group who were made up of drivers pleaded with the government of Ghana to evacuate them from Iraq which they described as the “most unsafe place in the world.”

There has been a similar call from some Ghanaians who are studying in China. This time, they are asking the government to evacuate them from the country(China) which is currently battling with the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19) with the death toll rising to 1,100 since its outbreak in Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has called on the government to immediately evacuate Ghanaian students currently locked up in China to another Asian country less affected by the coronavirus or back to Ghana.

A 28-year-old taxi driver, Kwame Akyeampong who has been lured to Kuwait with the promise of a lucrative job offer in the rich Arab community is at the crossroads.

Kwame is among a group of 130 young Ghanaians all of them drivers now stranded in Kuwait.

Speaking to Kapital Radio in a telephone interview, he said he and his compatriots are in a critical situation and appealed to the government to provide them with an urgent assistance so they can return home safely. Kwame Akyeampong sent the distress message through Kapital radio.

According to him, even though the organizer of the trip from Ghana promised them that their final destination would be in Kuwait, they learnt with shock that Iraq, the world’s most dangerous place is rather where they are to look for the greener pastures.

According to him, as of the time he was making the distress call he was unsure of his fate, if that could be his last words as a living soul since he is expected to sit behind the steering wheels of a truck loaded with food ration for US soldiers in Baghdad – the most unsafe place in the world.

He indicated that most of the over hundred Ghanaians are from Kumasi. He indicated that nationals who work for the U.S and British troops have become targets of suicide bombers. He pleaded with the government to come to their rescue because other countries have already evacuated their nationals.

  • You have 72 hours to evacuate Ghanaian students in China Minority to government

The Minority Caucus has called on the Government to as a matter of urgency, evacuate Ghanaian students currently locked up in China, to a less coronavirus-prone area or back to Ghana.

They have in effect, given the Akufo-Addo-led government a three-day ultimatum to take action.

Failure to that, they noted, will see them reconvene and tell the world their next line of action.

According to them, France, United State of America, Switzerland, Philippines, Russia, Libya among other countries have all evacuated their nationals from China as a result of the CoronaVirus.

The United States of America, they noted, is even doing a second round evacuation of their nationals, urging the Government to swiftly move in to save the Ghanaian students before anything bad befalls on them.

Over 400 Ghanaian students are estimated to be in China.

At a press briefing on the sidelines of Parliamentary sitting, Tuesday, the Ranking Members of the Foreign Affairs and Health Committees, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said Ghana has the capacity to evacuate their students from China, especially, those trapped in Wuhan, the epicenter of the CoronaVirus.

They cited war ravaged Libya as an example to buttress their argument, stressing that during the war nine years ago, Ghana was able to evacuate her nationals who were more than a thousand back to Ghana.

According to them, records released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicates that 1,016 people have been confirmed dead with 43,000 infested with the Corona Virus.

“The Government cannot be insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians. This is a humanitarian issue and the earlier the government acts, the better”, they noted.

  • Aburi rockslide: Act now or risk serious disaster Geologist warns government

A geologist at the University of Ghana, Dr. John Kusimi has called on the government to act with urgency to avoid what he describes as a looming disaster on the Aburi-Ayi Mensah road.

“A soon as possible within the capacity and the means of the state, we should act to do something before the next rainy season comes this year. If not we will be waiting for this looming disaster to strike,” he said.

Assessing the situation on the road which has seen multiple incidents of rockslide within the last two years, Dr. Kusimi told Ghanaweb in an interview that, even though the Aburi Mountain falls within a fault line making it prone to earthquakes, the current situation on a stretch of the road is as a result of the infiltration of water.

He said the construction of the road which saw parts of the mountain being scrapped off allowed water to permeate the mountain overtime. This he said has resulted in the mountain gaining more weight than it can hold.

According to the earth scientist, the gradient slope of the mountain which was rendered steeper due to the road construction, coupled with the penetration of water into the rocks is what has brought about the current situation of mass wasting currently being experienced.

“When the rocks were cut into and got exposed, we have a process we call weathering. The rocks were not exposed to water, now they are exposed to water. So the rocks got weathered and became loose.”

Speaking more on the factors influencing the situation of the rocks falling off to GhanaWeb, Dr. Kusimi said the erection of building structures on top of the mountain is serving as a major factor as it compounds to the weight of the mountain gained through the penetration of water.

He cautioned that should the right measures not be adopted in time to handle the situation, the risk of having a major disaster occur on the road stands very high, especially with the coming of the rainy season.

Proposing some measures that can serve as long term solutions to the recurrent incidents of a rockslide on the road, Dr. Kusimi said authorities should start by demolishing the structures which have been put up on the mountain.

“The time they were constructing the road was the time they should have done the netting. Now they should scrape all the loose materials, do a concrete spraying on the surfaces of the exposed rocks and then fix the net. So the few rabbles of loose stones that will fall the net will trap it. As for the removal of the buildings that is the first thing that has to be done.”

Furtherance to the scrapping of the rock surface and spraying concrete on it, some short rooted plants should be planted on the surface of the rocks to reduce any possible infiltration of water into the rocks, he proposed.

Dr Kusimi also called for the immediate seizure of all human activities such as quarrying on the mountain.

“Quarrying is taking place there, quarrying also has an effect that can trigger these things, especially if they are using very strong materials like dynamites to blow them up. It has a similar effect like the earthquake. So the quarrying has to stop, the building and construction of human infrastructure and all those human activities that are going to expose the rocks to weathering should be stopped.”
