  • Man who threw ‘lucky’ coins into plane engine fined

A Chinese man who was flying for the first time has been fined for throwing “good luck” coins into a plane’s engine.

The 28-year-old was ordered to pay $17,200 (£13,100) in compensation to the budget airline – called Lucky Air.

The plane was grounded after the coins were found near one of its engines.

Lu Chao admitted throwing the coins as he boarded an internal flight at Anqing Tianzhushan Airport in eastern China in February 2019.

He appeared in court in July but the ruling was only recently made public.

The flight was cancelled after staff spotted two 1 yuan coins on the ground near one of the plane’s jet engines.

Safety checks were carried out, leaving passengers stranded while replacement flights were arranged.

Mr Lu was also detained by police for 10 days, charged with disturbing public order, but was made to pay compensation via a civil case.

In court, Lucky Air said the incident had cost it more than $17,600.

Mr Lu argued in court that the airline should have warned passengers not to throw coins at planes.

It’s not the first time superstitious passengers have been caught throwing coins at plane engines.

There have been a number of such cases in recent years, including an elderly passenger who delayed a flight in 2017.

An actress who had a minor role in “Captain America: The First Avenger” has been charged in the stabbing death of her mother.

Mollie Fitzgerald was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree murder after authorities discovered 68-year-old Patricia Fitzgerald dead in an Olathe, Kansas, home on December 20, according to the Olathe Police Department.
Fitzgerald is being held in jail on a $500,000 bond, according to records from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. She appeared in court Thursday and is in the process of hiring a lawyer, court records show.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for January 9.
Fitzgerald, 38, played the part of “Stark Girl” in the 2011 Captain America film, and is credited on her IMDb page with being an assistant to the film’s director Joe Johnston. The movie, starring Chris Evans, made more than $370 million worldwide at the box office.

  • Nigerian communities struggle with devastating oil spills

Martha Alfred used to harvest 20 bags of cassava each year before an oil spill forced her to abandon her field and hawk roasted fish to survive.

Her smallholding at Ikarama-Okordia, a community in southern Nigeria’s Bayelsa state, became unfit for growing crops after crude from a nearby Shell facility spewed into the environment last August, she says.

Today, the 33-year-old mother of two looks angry and helpless, her woes compounded by downpours during the last rainy season that flooded her land.

“The soil has become infertile because of the spills,” Alfred told AFP.

“Each time I remember the spills and now the floods, my heart bleeds,” she said.

“People from Shell came and promised to do something for me. Up until now I have not heard from them.”

Ikarama-Okordia, a collection of villages, is one of the most polluted sites in the oil and gas-rich Niger Delta.

A major pipeline that passes through the fishing and farming community of 50,000 people has been the subject of spills and militant attacks for over 20 years.

Shell said it recorded a total of 21 spills in the area between 2009 and 2018.

Overall, rights groups say that millions of barrels of crude have leaked out across the Niger Delta region over the years.

The oil companies blame most of the leaks on sabotage from local residents and criminal gangs stealing the crude.

But under Nigerian laws, the firms are obliged to clean up all spills whatever their cause.

Villagers argue some spills are due to operational factors.

“It’s not completely true all the incidents are caused by sabotage. Some of them are due to equipment failures,” Ikarama community leader Morris Lamiengha told AFP.

Asked about the allegations from the residents of Ikarama-Okordia, Shell insisted it meets its obligations on all clean-ups and helps affected communities whatever the reasons for the leakages.

“Shell has always and will always live up to its responsibility,” spokesman Bamidele Odugbesan told AFP.

“The problem we face is re-pollution. After we clean a site, the vandals will go back and damage the facility to steal the oil without considering the negative impact on the environment.”

    ‘Destroyed the ecosystem’

A vicious cycle is repeated across the entire region: environmental degradation, pollution, neglect, under-development, anger, frustration and pain.

In oil-rich Ogoniland, it took a 2011 United Nations Environment Progamme (UNEP) report before the government launched a clean-up of the spills in the area that looks set to last some 30 years.

In Oloibiri, where crude was first discovered in Nigeria in 1956, the locals live in abject poverty. No jobs, roads, hospitals and schools.

The Oloibiri oil well no longer produces and is overgrown with weeds, while the residents drink and wash in stream water.

A government promise in 2001 to erect an oil museum in Oloibiri as a monument to the first oil well in Nigeria has yet to be fulfilled.

Locals and environmental campaigners say oil majors like Shell, Exxon Mobil, Eni, Total and Chevron, are not doing enough for host communities despite many decades of oil exploration in the region.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest producer, produces an average of two million barrels of crude per day, which accounts for 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings.

“The oil firms have destroyed the region’s ecosystem through their operations,” said Michael Karikpo of Environmental Rights Action lobby group.

He said the people’s mainstay of farming and fishing has been ruined without providing an alternatives, forcing local residents to engage in criminality for survival.

“That’s why incidents of bunkering, oil thefts, pipeline vandalisation and illegal refineries will continue in the Niger Delta,” he said.

He said only very few Nigerians were benefiting from oil money, while tens of millions eke out a living on less than two dollars per day.

For him, the only way to avoid spills is do away with oil production entirely.

“We should stop oil production in Nigeria because of its negative impact on the people and the environment and focus more on renewable energy,” he added.

    ‘Sitting on gunpowder’

Anyakwee Nsirimovu of Niger Delta Civil Society Coalition said the nation is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder if nothing is done to address the grievances of the oil-producing communities”.

He said rather than being a benefit, “oil has been a curse for the people”, adding that there was little or nothing to show for the billions of dollars made from the sector.

“Our situation is like someone who lives at the bank of a river but washes his hand with spittle,” he said.

He recalled the unrest in the region in the early 2000s by militants seeking a fair share of the nation’s oil wealth for the local people.

Months of militant attacks on pipelines and oil infrastructure slashed Nigeria’s output to less than a third at the time, hurting government revenues.

It took a 2009 government amnesty for the oil rebels before they laid down their arms and halted the attacks.

  • Key Iran General Soleimani killed by US in Iraq

General Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force, has been killed by US forces in Iraq.

The Pentagon confirmed he was killed “at the direction of the president”.

Gen Soleimani was being driven by car at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, when he was hit by a US air strike.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said “severe revenge awaits the criminals” behind the attack.

He also announced three days of mourning.

Gen Soleimani, 62, was a major figure in the Iranian regime. His Quds Force reported directly to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and he was hailed as a heroic national figure.

But the US has called the commander and the Quds Force terrorists, and holds them responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel.

US President Donald Trump tweeted an image of the American flag after the news broke.

Global oil prices meanwhile soared more than 4% in the wake of the strike.

    What happened?

US media reports say Gen Soleimani and officials from Iran-backed militias were leaving Baghdad airport in two cars when they were hit by a US drone strike near a cargo area.

The commander had reportedly flown in from Lebanon or Syria. Several missiles reportedly struck the convoy, and at least five people are thought to have died.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was among those killed.

A Pentagon statement said: “At the direction of the President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani.”

It added: “This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”

The drone strike comes days after protesters attacked the US embassy in Baghdad, clashing with US forces at the scene. The Pentagon said Gen Soleimani approved the attacks on the embassy.

    How has Iran responded?

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, called the attack an “act of international terrorism”, tweeting that the US “bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.”

Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said Iran would take “vigorous revenge on America”. A spokesman for the Iranian government said the country’s top security body would meeting in a few hours to discuss the “criminal act of attack”.

    Who was Qasem Soleimani?

From 1998, Maj Gen Qasem Soleimani led Iran’s Quds Force – an elite unit in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which handles clandestine operations abroad.

Iran has acknowledged the role of the Quds Force in the conflicts in Syria, where it has advised forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and armed thousands of Shia Muslim militiamen fighting alongside them, and in Iraq, where it has backed a Shia-dominated paramilitary force that helped tackle IS.

These conflicts turned the once-reclusive Gen Soleimani into a something of celebrity in Iran.

The Trump administration has alleged that the Quds Force is “Iran’s primary mechanism for cultivating and supporting” US-designated terrorist groups across the Middle East – including Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement and Palestinian Islamic Jihad – by providing funding, training, weapons and equipment.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and its Quds Force as foreign terrorist organisations in April.

  • Rice farmers demand inclusion in industry decision making

Rice farmers in the five regions of the North have made a passionate appeal to government to put in place mechanisms to ensure that local farmers partake in decisions to resolve issues in local rice production.

According to the farmers, although government acted swiftly to respond to the concerns raised by the farmers about their inability to get ready market for the hundreds of tonnes of local rice produced in the Fumbisi, Yagaba, Tono, Vea, Nasia and Nalerigu valleys, the problem persists.

At a Meeting at Navrongo in the Upper East Region organized by the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) to among other things discuss strategies to boost rice production and marketing in the coming years, the farmers pointed out that making Ghana self-sustainable in rice production will not succeed without the involvement of rice farmers themselves in decision making to improve the sector.

There are still challenges in the rice production sector Farmers

They further expressed regret that although arrangements were made for the National Food Buffer Stuck Company (NAFCO) and a private company, Avnash Industry Ghana, to purchase local rice from the farmers, the challenges of getting ready market for the produce has not been resolved as some of the farmers have incurred losses either through bush fires, or middlemen and market women taking advantage of the situation to offer them ridiculously low prices as well as purchasing the rice on credit without payment.

They further explained that farmers in the rice valleys in the Upper East Region currently do not have the needed resources to transport their rice produce from their respective farms to Tamale for Avnash company to purchase.

The farmers who expressed their sentiments at the Meeting include Samuel Abiayega from the Gbedembilisi valley in the Fumbisi area; Alhaji Jibril from the Yagaba rice valley; Abdulai Inusah from the Sumbrungu-Karbeo rice valley; Mrs Humu Abdulai; Reverend John Akaribo from the Tono rice valley; Alhaji Ahmed Bogobiri from the Tono and overseas rice valley areas; and Mr Abubakar Mutalakimu from the Yagaba valley.

They mentioned such challenges as lack of access roads to rice fields, high cost of mechanization services including combined harvesters, planters, processors, rice milling equipment, tractor services, fertilizers, destruction of rice fields by birds, cattle, bush fires and floods.

Bush fires ravage rice farms in northern regions

The National President of PFAG, Mr Abdul Rahman Mohammed observed that “as we speak, I have lost 50 acres of my rice farm due to bush fire and most of you equally have such bad experiences”.

He cited other challenges as low and unreliable rainfall in recent times, bad feeder roads, difficulty in accessing credit for farming activities and limited access to extension services.

Mr Mohammed noted that most of the challenges being faced by the farmers are “historical and several efforts in the past and present were implemented to address them but unfortunately they are far from over.”

The Head of Programmes and Advocacy of the PFAG, Mr Charles Nyaaba observed that in 2018, the Avnash Company in Tamale guaranteed ready market for rice farmers in Northern Ghana.

“Nevertheless, their failure to buy rice in 2019 led to a glut in the months of November and December which triggered the rice campaign initiated by the PFAG”, Mr Nyaaba further noted.

According to him, the PFAG has observed that after the campaign, many private individuals and organizations who have no hint of the difficulty “we the farmers went through but are fortunate to have access to government institutions due to their proximity to the seat of government, have started lobbying for support for rice sector development without consulting any of the farmers in the valleys who are facing the problems.”

  • Pope says sorry for slapping devotee

Pope Francis apologised Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve.

The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media.

    A personal apology followed.

“We lose patience many times,” Francis confessed.

How Pope Francis could shape the future of robotics

“It happens to me too. I apologise for the bad example given yesterday,” the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican.

Twitter enthusiasts commented with abandon on the pontiff’s prompt riposte to the woman.

Francis had greeted children before the Nativity scene on Saint Peter’s square and was turning away when the woman who had crossed herself then cried out something, pulled on his hand and almost caused him to fall.

The 83-year-old pope grimaced before managing to break free by slapping her hand twice.

He continued his tour, walking with some difficulty while maintaining a slightly greater distance from visitors, and gradually relaxed again as he came into contact with other children.

Twitter comments were mostly supportive of the pontiff’s instinctive reaction.

“HE IS HUMAN.. Been (sic) a Pope doesn’t make you immune to Pain or avoid Reaction to pain,” one typical comment read.

In his first Mass of the New Year, the pontiff later denounced “all violence against women” as “a profanation of God, born of a woman.”

Francis also said women were “the source of life” but deplored that they were constantly “offended, beaten, abused and forced into prostitution” and forced to “supress the life they carry within” them.

He emphasised that the “rebirth of humanity began with a woman,” and bemoaned that women’s bodies were “sacrificed on the profane altars of advertising, profit, pornography.”

  • Zinabu, the first Ghanaian film to be shot using a video camera

Zinabu is a 1987 Ghanaian film directed by William Akuffo and Richard Quartey and the film tells the story of a witch converting to Christianity.

The film was shot in 1985 using a video camera, rather than a film camera. Video was a relatively new medium at the time, but Akuffo and Quartey recognised the advantage that video footage had over film, as film celluloid was more expensive and presented challenges for distribution. Zinabu then became the first Ghanaian movie to be produced on video.

During the production of Zinabu, the Ghanaian government introduced a ban on video, in an attempt to curb the negative effect they thought unlicensed American and Chinese films were having on Ghanaian culture. This ban was lifted in 1987, largely due to the work of William Akuffo.

The film received its premiere at the Globe Cinema and the screening was designed to imitate a normal film screening: the video player was not visible to the audience, and Akuffo was in the projection room.

  • Awudu Tijani, the man who directed traffic in Accra for two decades passes on

For 20 years, Rahman directed traffic without pay, without respect. Rain or shine, he put his life on the line to make sure traffic kept flowing.

Only this year, a film was made about him to celebrate his work. Only a week ago, we premiered the films to the world – the happiest, proudest moment of his life.

But only yesterday you passed on eternally. It feels as though you were waiting for your moment of bliss before you finally let go.

25 drivers arrested for breaking traffic rules spared after education from police

Twenty years you held on with an unshakable belief that your service shall be noticed. Someday. Somehow.

But you were tired. Your shell was weakened and battered. Each day you spent in the sun and rain saving our time, you were losing your time.

Barely noticed. Barely appreciated. Bruised yet unfazed.

But he’s gone now. Another unsung hero who gave everything and got nothing in return.

And now he’ll be noticed. Now he’ll be remembered.

When the cars are stacked bumper to bumper on that lonely stretch along the Awudome Cemetery, when beads of sweat beat down the brows of anxious drivers, when everyone loses time because there’s no one to donate theirs, you’ll be remembered.

That once upon a time lived a man who married the road, one who literally spent his time saving our time. But alas we noticed a tad too late!

  • Alan Kyerematen hosts African trade ministers

Ghana, under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, is playing host to African Ministers of Trade from the African Union member states from Monday, December 09 to Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The period will see the holding of series of meetings such as the underlisted.

17th Meeting of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Negotiating Forum (9th-11th December)
10th meeting of the Committee of Senior Trade Officials (12th-13th December, 2019).

African Ministers of Trade Meeting and the AfCFTA Council of Ministers Meeting (14th-15th December, 2019).

African countries must adopt innovative financing models to close infrastructure gap Alan Kyerematen

The 17th African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Negotiating Forum will seek to finalise outstanding works on phase one negotiations which deals with the trade in goods and services protocols as well as dispute settlement mechanisms. Technical Working Groups on investments, competition policy and intellectual property rights will also be established.

The report of the Negotiating Forum will form the agenda for the meeting of the Senior Trade Officials from the 12th-13th December, 2019.

At the Council of Ministers Meeting, attention will be paid to the consideration of the report of the meeting of the Senior Trade Officials as well as consideration of work plans and budgets of the interim AfCFTA Secretariat and the permanent Secretariat.

These meetings are of particular relevance to the country considering the fact that Ghana is the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a Single Market (Duty-free, Quota-free) covering the entire African Continent with a total population of 1.2 billion and a combined GDP of almost USD 3 trillion.

The AfCFTA is the single most significant development in Africa since the establishment of Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. It is considered as the flagship project under the AU Agenda 2063.

It is the worlds largest Free Trade Area, second only to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in terms of the number of member states.

The AfCFTA seeks to increase intra-African trade through better harmonisation and coordination of trade within the African continent. It is estimated that intra-African trade will increase by as much as $35 billion per annum or 52% by 2022.

Africa Free Trade to rake in $35bn Alan Kyerematen

The Free Trade Area also aims at addressing the challenge of small fragmented markets in Africa by creating a single continental market which will lead to economies of scale; add value to Africas abundant natural resources and promote economic diversification and industrialization.

It is also envisaged to develop regional value chains and facilitate cross border investments; enhance access to an expanded market for SMEs in Africa on preferential trade terms; attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into Africa with strong regional and local content; facilitate the integration of Africa economies into global markets and thereby significantly improve the Terms of Trade for African countries; among others.

The AfCFTA is operational, with Ghana as the host country, at a time when Ghana is implementing a comprehensive industrial transformation plan to diversify the production base of the economy to take advantage of the enormous market access opportunities available under preferential terms for Ghanaian and other producers in Africa.

In addition to focusing on harnessing the benefits of the AfCFTA, Government has set up an institutional coordination and support framework, which includes an Inter-Ministerial Facilitation Committee, a National Steering Committee and Seven (7) Technical Working Groups to implement a Programme of Action to Boost Intra-African Trade, all to be supported by a National Coordination Office for AfCFTA.

It is instructive to note that despite Ghanas pioneering role in the struggle for independence in Africa and subsequent contributions to the integration of the African continent, Ghana has not had the honour and privilege of hosting any AU Organ. Although it has been long in coming, it has come at a time when Africa is rising and Ghana is rising.

Full implementation of the Free Trade Area, in the knowledge and wisdom of the African Union and its leadership, is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2020 to, rightfully so, coincide with the day Ghana attained a Republican Status.

  • Address decent work deficit in informal sector to encourage patronage

Mr Bright Wireko-Brobby, the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, has called on informal sector players to put in place measures to address the huge decent work deficit to boost patronage of their services.

He said the poor working environment and quality of products, among other things, often deterred individuals, businesses and the Government from patronising their services and products.

Mr Wireko-Brobby made the call at the 44th Certification Day of the Opportunities Industrialisation Centre Ghana (OICG)-Accra.

It was on the theme: “Nurturing Skills for Ghana’s Industrialisation Drive; The Role of OICG Accra.”

“Informality in itself is not bad but the decent work deficits that characterise the sector is what must be reduced if not eliminated completely because they make individuals, businesses and government uncomfortable about patronising their services and products.”

“The modus operandi, working environment, quality of products, among other things often leaves much to be desired,” he added.

Touching on the relevance of technical and vocational skills education, he said government was committed to supporting the schools to to develop the human resource skills required to drive the industrialisation agenda for economic transformation.

According to the 2015 Labour Force Report of the Ghana Living Standard Survey Round Six (GLSS 6), the formal sector, both public and private, would not be able to generate jobs in the required numbers to absorb the growing labour force.

“This means that a large proportion of the population would have to be guided into the informal sector, which already employs about 85 per cent of the labour force.”

“This means graduates being trained by technical and vocational institutions would have to create employment opportunities to absorb the growing labour force,” he said.

He said government would, therefore, work with managements of those technical and vocational institutions across the country to strengthen skills development for inclusive growth and improved employment outcomes.

Dr Daniel McKorley, the Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, urged the youth to disabuse their minds of technical and vocational education, saying it was a sector with huge potential for wealth creation.

“I have many projects ongoing and I can tell you that a tiler at one of my sites is taking home over GHC15,000 to GHS20,000 every month. Will you compare this to any degree or to any grammar taught in any university? We have really underestimated technical education but I think technical education is the future,” he said.

He called on the private sector and corporate Ghana to support technical and vocational institutions to ensure they were well equipped to provide the requisite skills training for the job market.

In all, 350 trainees from eight departments; Motor-Vehicle Mechanic, Plumbering, Graphic Arts, Office Skills, Masonry, Fashion, Catering/Hospitality and Electricals were certified, of which 187 were males and 163 females.
