  • Violence in Agbogbloshie, Old Fadama must end now – Ya-Na appeals

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, says the use of violence as a means of settling misunderstandings between youth groups in communities will no longer be countenanced by the traditional authorities in Dagbon.

The Ya-Na said the only sustainable approach to the effective settlement of communal disputes and disagreement is through continued dialogue and compromises.

He, therefore, called for an end to every violent misunderstanding in Dagomba communities around the world, especially in the Agbobgloshie communities in the capital, Accra.

Ya-Na marks first Damba Festival with pomp and pageantry

The Dagbon King was speaking at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi at a crisis meeting Wednesday, with the leadership of the Dagomba community in the Greater Accra Region, to discuss a lasting solution to the protracted political and chieftaincy disputes in the slums of Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama.

Over the years, deadly violence has persisted among scrap dealers who are mostly Dagombas who have fled the harsh economic situations and conflict in the north to settle in the Agbogbloshie area.

The fighting, which has led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties, has been over control of the scrap yards by the groups divided along political and chieftaincy lines.

The situation became pronounced after the Dagbon incident in 2012 and has always escalated especially after a change in political power with violent takeovers and destruction of properties belonging to perceived members of the losing faction.

The conflict in these scrap yards now threatens a €15million sustainable e-waste management support programme by the government of Germany, which was commissioned in 2016, to assist the Ghanaian Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), in improving the framework for sustainable e-waste management.

New Ya-Na reveals real donor of posh car

In order to safeguard and ensure the sustainability of the project, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) implementing the project on behalf of Berlin, accompanied local leaders at the scrap yards to the Dagbon Overlord and his chiefs, to solicit for support and more authority to be able to take and exercise binding decisions and controls.

Led by the Dagomba chief of Kasoa, Naa Abdallah Amidu, the group visited over seven paramount chiefs before reaching the final destination at the Gbewa Palace, the seat of the King, on Wednesday.

The chief pleaded with the Overlord to give them formal recognition and powers to able to deal with the protracted conflict.

  • Man allegedly kills six-year old son

Sherif Akudaago, 35, on Saturday, allegedly killed his six-year-old son at Garu in the Garu District of the Upper East Region.

The unemployed man reportedly cut the throat of Hanan Akudaago, who was a primary one pupil at the Covenant Academy Primary School at Garu, at about 4:00 am.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daniel Yaro, Garu District Police Commander, confirmed the incident in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Garu on Saturday, describing it as disheartening and shocking.

“This is barbaric and inhuman so Akudaago is currently in police custody assisting in investigations,” he said.

Charles Azure, a resident of the area, who spoke to the GNA, said the incident came to him as a shock because Mr. Akudaago loved his son dearly, and no one could fathom why he would do a thing like that.

“Mr. Akudaago was always seen with his son and caring for him. Even on Friday night, he was seen with the boy buying food for him,” he said.

The mother of the boy and other family members declined to speak with the GNA reporter.

They were visibly in shock and grief over the tragedy. Meanwhile, some residents appealed to police not to hasten to attribute the cause to insanity and thus release the suspect; rather, they should thoroughly investigate the matter to rule out any spiritual connections.

They said undermining the rule of law in the investigation would endanger the lives of other citizens.

GPHA trade mission delegation meets customs of Niger

The committee is co-chaired by the Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, Mr Yofi Grant, and the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Himeno Tsutomu.

It is scheduled to hold bi-annual meetings in Accra.

    Ghana-Japan partnership

The committee, known as the Ghana-Japan Business Promotion Committee (GJBPC), will serve as a high-level partnership mechanism to facilitate mutual investment, trade and business interest between the two countries.

Additionally, it will serve as a vehicle to drive strategic economic partnership by promoting and supporting Japanese businesses in Ghana and Ghanaian businesses in Japan, promoting Ghana as an entry point into Africa and also as an investment hub to Japanese companies.

Furthermore, the committee will set up information sharing mechanisms on trade updates, laws and regulation policies, industrial standards and market trends to the benefit of both countries, organise trade and investment-related delegation to other countries, as well as assist visiting business delegations from Japan to identify and deliver solutions to challenges faced by Japanese companies or businesses in Ghana and Ghanaian companies or businesses in Japan.

    Ghana’s vision

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration, Mr Grant said Ghana was repositioning itself to be the most attractive business destination in Africa and a hub for investment, trade and industrial activities on the African continent.

GUTA attacks: Akufo-Addo has spoken like a father Nigerian traders

To achieve these objectives, he said, measures had been put in place to ensure micro economic stability through physical consolidation and better prudent debt management and significant reforms in some major sectors.

Mr Grant said Ghana was a preferred destination because of its economic and political environment, such as its significant economic progress in the last two years, reduction in interest rates and two years of positive trade balance.

A Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr Charles Owiredu, expressed the hope that the close relationship between Ghana and Japan would grow stronger with more Japanese businesses coming to Ghana and more Ghanaian businesses taking up business opportunities in Japan.

“The Ghana mission in Tokyo is ready to facilitate and assist Japanese businesses to thrive in Ghana and use Ghana as an entry point to West Africa and eventually into Africa,” he stated.

    Japanese request

Mr Tsutomu, for his part, urged the government to put in place measures that would create the necessary environment for “Japanese businesses and investors to feel welcomed and comfortable when they come to Ghana.”

He said the embassy had identified a number of challenges being confronted by Japanese businesses and investors who wanted to do business in Ghana and had shared that information with the appropriate authorities.

    Challenges

Representatives of the Japanese private sector enumerated some of the challenges confronting their businesses in Ghana and requested the Ghanaian side to improve the business climate.

The two sides also took turns to explain the policies that were in place to encourage private business investment.

A document made available to the media listed some of the challenges encountered by Japanese businesses as tax issues, import and other levies, policy changes, high rent fees, violation of intellectual property rights and counterfeit of products, shortage of skilled workers and bad reception at government agencies, corruption and uncertainty in the legal system, among others.

To overcome these challenges, the Japanese side urged the government to strengthen the disclosure of information and improve communications, strengthen the microeconomic fundamentals, improve the investment climate, respect contracts, simplify tax payment procedures, simplify the application of visa processes and introduce measures that would ensure policy continuity in the event of a change of government.

Appearing on Accra based Net2 television on Wednesday morning [December 4, 2019] to promote an upcoming crusade at Madina Zongo junction, Dr Tetteh said some of the things Mr Agyapong has been talking about on television and radio shows his “boldness.”

Dr Lawrence Tetteh vows to ordain Kwamena Idan as a Pastor

Mr Agyapong has been on a crusade this week putting out what he claims was a dossier investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has been working with which contains names and personal details of people who are on the watch list of the investigative journalist.

The dossier he claims contains personal data, addresses, telephone numbers, names of spouses and investments the names on the list have been making at various financial institutions in Ghana and abroad since 2012.

Some of the names on the list he claims were people the investigative journalist has been compensating on a monthly basis.

Mr Agyapong has been putting out the names on the watch list since Monday and commenting on it, whilst appearing on Net2 after Mr Agyapong had finished with his programme Wednesday morning, Dr Tetteh said, “the things he [Agyapong] is saying here, how many of us can say it.”

He said it was, therefore, his prayer that God will continue to use him [Agyapong] and that when he finishes his work as a legislator, he should become a preacher.

Dr Tetteh said most prominent people in Ghana are “very theological minded.”

Reacting to references to him as someone who is able to quote Bible verses without referring to the Bible, Mr Agyapong sarcastically said he did Bible Knowledge (BK) and Religious Studies (RS) in secondary school and Theology in the university.

The prayer for Mr Agyapong Wednesday morning came after he had as usual appeared on the television station on his crusade of what he describes as “exposing” the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Dr Tetteh on his part had appeared at the television station to promote his upcoming crusade at the forecourt of Oman FM at Madina Zongo junction which is taking place on December 13th and 14th.

He said for a long time no big crusade has been organised in the Madina Zongo junction area.

He said they have been doing crusades in a lot of places in Ghana but recently realised that many churches have not paid attention to the Madina area even though there are many churches in the area.

  • Gov’t pegs premix fuel subsidy for 2019 at Ghc206m despite reports of shortages

The Minister for Energy, John Peter Amewu, says government will continue to subsidize premix fuel to make the product available to fisher folk across the country.

In recent times, the usual reports about the shortage of the product have resurfaced in some coastal communities.

The Minister blames the shortage on persons he calls crooks who hoard the product only to sell later at exorbitant prices.

Peter Amewu confirmed as NPP candidate for Hohoe constituency

Speaking at a handing over ceremony of a prototype premix retail outlet across various landing beaches, Mr. Amewu said subsidy for premix fuel for 2019 alone is estimated at 206 million cedis.

“The current subsidy on premix fuel is 63% of the full price, and this has risen from about 43% in January 2017,” he said, adding that government has since 2017 to May 2019 spent GHS373.9 million to cushion fishermen.

Mr. Amewu cited for example that a total of GHS137.5 million was spent in 2017 and GHS160.8 million in 2018 on the product.

He stated that this amount is projected to rise to about GHS 206 million in 2019.

According to him, a total of GHS134,604,110 million has been accumulated from January to September 2019.

“We are happy to learn that stringent measures instituted by the New Patriotic Party government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo has discouraged the practice of diversion which is detrimental to our effort at building a just and fair society,” he said.

He stated that the move has consequently impacted on the efficient and equitable distribution of premix fuel to fisher folks, reversing the perennial challenge of shortages.

He stressed that the Ministry of Energy will continue to give policy directions to the National Petroleum Authority, NPA, to ensure protection is given to the business of genuine players in the industry.

“We shall work closely with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the National Premix Secretariat to expose the fraudulent ones desperately trying to undermine the decency of premix fuel distribution and consumption,” he assured.

  • Meet Ephraim Amu, the man behind Ghana’s most popular patriotic song ‘Yen Ara Asase Ni’

Ephraim Amu is well known as the composer of one of Ghana’s most popular patriotic songs, ‘Yen Ara Asase Ni’.

The heroic composer had other great creations under his sleeve.

Mynewsghana.com reports that his love for music came to light when he was at the Peki-Blengo E.P. Boarding Middle School.

This was just 12 years after he was born on September 13, 1899, at Peki-Avetile, a small village in Volta Region.

With his newly-found passion, Ephraim Amu was compelled to his music teacher by name Karl Ntem.

Mr Ntem decided to only teach Ephraim when he decides to pay something in return.

Since Ephraim could not pay in cash, he had an agreement with Karl Ntem to serve on Karl’s farm every Saturday.

It was a brilliant deal for young Ephraim. Ephraim Amu’s interest in music was not very surprising as his father, Stephen Amuyaa, was a woodcarver, drummer and singer. His mother was called Madam Sarah Akoram Ama.

In the early days of 1920, Ephraim became a teacher at Peki-Blengo E.P. Middle Boarding School.

His music career grew more wings there as he dedicated a lot of time teaching his pupils the rudiments of music.

To develop himself more, he himself took music lessons with a Methodist Minister stationed at Peki-Avetile.

Not long after, Ephraim began to compose very compelling songs, some of which are Mawo do na Yesu, Nkwagye Dwom, Dwonto, Yetu Osa, Israel Hene, Onipa da wo ho so, Yaanom Abibirimma among others.

Arguably, the biggest break came for him when he composed Yen Ara Asase Ni which became a national song.

For his massive contribution to music, Amu received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Ghana.

It is reported that his efforts played a key role in establishing a school of music in Legon. Aside music, Amu was good with his hands.

He was known for inventing a bicycle from wood which was named ‘Amu’. He also made wooden balls that were used for school games.

Ephraim Amu also lived a full length of life as he ‘went home’ when he was 96 years old. Ghana has had many amazing individuals in the past.

Just recently, YEN.com.gh reported that Professor Alexander Adum Kwapong had a life full of achievements.

A 25-year-old Nigerian who allegedly defiled a nine-year-old girl consistently in a bathroom at Nungua has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Festus Ogun, unemployed is facing a charge of defilement.

Ogun who was without any legal representation, however, denied the offence and the court admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with three sureties.

The court presided over by Rita Abrokwa-Doko directed that two of the sureties should be Ghanaians and one of the sureties should come from within the Greater Accra Metropolis.

The matter has been adjourned to December 17.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant is the mother of the victim.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said the parties in the case reside at different locations in Nungua, Accra.

He said on November 4, this year, when the victim came from school, the complainant detected that the victim was not feeling well and questioned her.

Prosecution said the victim informed the complainant that someone had been luring her into a bathroom anytime she comes back from school and that the person has been having sex with her.

According to the prosecution, she said that the person had warned her not to inform anyone about the act or else she will die.

Mr Atimbire said the victim told the complainant that she could identify the perpetrator.

He said based on that information on November 5, this year, the complainant went with the victim to “monitor” the said perpetrator.

The prosecution said Ogun emerged and the victim identified him and the complainant mobilized some witnesses who grabbed the accused and sent him to the Police Station in Nungua.

He said a medical report form was then issued to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim.

  • Essex lorry deaths: Victims’ remains arrive back in Vietnam

The bodies of 16 Vietnamese people who were found dead in a refrigerated lorry in the UK have arrived back in Vietnam.

They were among 39 migrants – eight women and 31 males, including two boys aged 15 – found in the lorry in Essex on 23 October.

The bodies were flown to Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport, and will be taken by ambulance to their family homes.

Investigations are underway in both the UK and Vietnam – several people have been arrested or charged.

“We have been waiting for this moment for a very long time. We will organise the funeral as soon as he’s returned,” said Vo Van Binh, the father of one victim, Vo Van Linh.

Speaking to AFP from Ha Tinh province, he said the family were “very sad, but happy as finally, my son is back”.

The bodies of the remaining victims will be repatriated in the coming days, though a date has not been publicly confirmed.

Repatriation of each body will cost each of the victims’ families more than 66.2 million Vietnamese dong ($2,856; £2,204), according to the vice minister of foreign affairs.

The Vietnamese government had offered loans to relatives, though some have said this will only add to the debts they incurred by helping their late relative make the journey to the UK.

Several Vietnamese organisations have helped to raise money for the families of the victims. More than $110,000 has now been crowdfunded to help support the families.

    What happened to the victims?

On 23 October, police found the bodies at the back of a refrigerated lorry in the town of Grays in Essex, eastern England.

Police initially believed the victims to be Chinese nationals but it was later revealed that all 39 of them were from Vietnam.

  • Why Kim Kardashian West is dressing less sexy

When it comes to being a sex symbol it can be “complicated” for Kim Kardashian West.

In an interview with The Cut, the reality star/beauty mogul talked about her life over the past decade and how she’s influenced culture.

In terms of being viewed as a sex symbol, she said: “It can be complicated.”

“I definitely see the things that I brought on myself, the biggest being the robbery,” Kardashian West said of having been robbed in Paris in 2016. “Just being flashy and oversharing my every move on social media. But I enjoy my life.”

She said she has been dressing less sexy these days.

“I don’t know if it’s the fact that my husband has voiced that sometimes too sexy is just overkill and he’s not comfortable with that,” she said. “I listen to him and understand him. Still, at the end of the day, he always gives me the freedom to be and do what I want.”

Viewers of her family’s E! reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” witnessed Kanye West clashing with his wife over her form-fitting outfit for the Met Ball.

He said the outfit was too sexy and it affected his soul and spirit when she dressed provocatively.

She told The Cut she’s “kind of had this awakening myself” about how she dresses.

“I realized I could not even scroll through Instagram in front of my kids without full nudity coming up on my feed pretty much all the time,” Kardashian West said. “And I definitely contributed to that.”

She pointed out her now-famous Paper magazine cover which “broke the internet” and showed her oiled up and nude.

Her new role as a criminal justice reform advocate also has factored in as well.

“I also did think, like, okay, I’m here in the White House and then the next day I was posting, like, a crazy bikini selfie,” she said. “And I was thinking, I hope they don’t see this. I have to go back there next week.”

  • Floods kill at least 39 in Congolese capital Kinshasa

At least 39 people died in flooding on Tuesday in Kinshasa, the sprawling capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, following torrential rains overnight, authorities said.

The heavy rain caused landslides near the University of Kinshasa, they said.

A Reuters witness at the scene said at least three houses had fallen into a ravine and a recently paved road had also collapsed. Chunks of concrete and metal roofing could be seen sticking out of the freshly turned orange earth.

    GH¢528m budgeted to tackle flooding

The vice governor of Kinshasa province, Néron Mbungu, said rescue workers were continuing to hunt for bodies.

“Wherever we found death, we gave the mayors the means to bring the bodies to the morgue, and we also made available the means for the wounded to be taken to medical centres,” he said.

Floods are not unusual in Kinshasa, a city of almost 12 million people with notoriously poor infrastructure and where many neighbourhoods are poorly planned, though they rarely cause so many deaths.

University Avenue was completely swept into a ravine along with at least three houses.

  • Women in Africa lead the world in corporate board membership

Africa, a continent blighted by the world’s highest maternal mortality rate and scant legal protection for women, beats all other regions globally in the proportion of females on company boards.

In Africa, one in four board members are female. That’s better than second-placed Europe at 23% and well ahead of global laggard Latin America at 7%, according to a report on gender parity released by the McKinsey Global Institute on Tuesday. The world average for female representation on boards is 17%. Representation on executive committees in Africa is lower than on boards, at 22%, but above the global average of 21%.

Women are key in desertification and restoration fight Samia urges African Leaders

Still, the advance has been led by progress in only a handful of African nations and women disproportionately occupy leadership roles in human resources and legal departments, jobs that are seen as less likely to lead to the position of chief executive officer, McKinsey said in the report titled ‘The Power of Parity – Advancing women’s equality in Africa.’

“A number of reality checks are necessary,” McKinsey said. “Only a relatively small number of economies — namely Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa — have made headway.”

Below senior management, Africa’s performance has been less stellar, but still not out of step with other regions.

At 76%, its workforce participation rate is above the world average of 64% and only behind Western Europe and the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. But it’s below the global average on formal employment and representation in professional and technical jobs.

Women also do relatively well in Africa in terms of political representation. With 25% of political representatives being women, Africa is ahead of the global average of 21%. The continent’s best performers are Rwanda, South Africa and Ethiopia.

Outside of the workplace, African women are far more disadvantaged, with significant inequality in their role in society and the legal protection available to them.

“Africa has not done a good job of providing essential services such as health care and education,” McKinsey said. “The continent has the world’s highest rates of maternal mortality and unmet need for family planning in the world.”

Women in tourism significant to speeding up economic growth South Africa High Commissioner to Ghana

The equality of women’s and men’s rights is only enshrined in law in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Rwanda. High levels of violence against women are also prevalent.

Even so, the picture is a mixed one, reflecting a range of experience across a continent with 54 nations and more than one billion people.

“Countries in southern Africa perform relatively well on women’s education and also have a low incidence of child marriage,” McKinsey said. “This is not the case in West and Central Africa.”

Across all measures in the 39 African countries that McKinsey could obtain data for, South Africa, with a gender parity score of 0.76, is the best place to be a woman. Niger is the worst, with a score of 0.45. Complete parity would be a score of 1. Out of the five top scoring nations only one, Rwanda, wasn’t in southern Africa.

That has implication for economic performance: By denying women equal rights, African countries are limiting their growth potential. If all countries matched South Africa’s level of parity by 2025, the continental economy would be 10%, or $316 billion, larger, McKinsey said.

Still, at the current pace of progress complete gender parity in Africa will only be reached in 142 years.

He was originally arrested in 2012 and convicted of obtaining money under false pretences and forgery.

The country’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the two prison staff were arrested for falsifying medical reports that enabled Aroke to get treatment outside prison in a police hospital.

According to documents sighted by MyNewsGh.com, the amount and its accrued interest started from March 23, 2009 and as at November 25, 2019 he was yet to clear himself.

The Student Loan Trust Foundation (SLTF) since last week has been naming and shaming individuals some in high positions who have benefited from the scheme but have failed to settle their indebtedness upon completion of their programmes.

A list released recently captures hundreds of defaulters from the University for Development Studies, University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology; Ho, Bolga, Tamale, Sunyani, Koforidua, Kumasi Takoradi Polytechnics.

Meanwhile, Head of the Public Relations Unit of the SLTF, Mr George Ferguson Laing has justified the decision by the Fund to publish names of defaulters indicating that it is yielding the needed results.

“We have payments being made. Some too have come to restructure their payments, but we are taking it on a case by case basis. For some people, there is no way you can allow them to restructure their payment, they have to repay everything because it has taken them too long to settle their indebtedness. So far, the response is very encouraging and I pray that we would not take a drastic action of going to court”, he revealed.

  • Living near busy road can stunt children’s lung growth – Study

Children exposed to roadside air pollution could have their lung growth stunted by up to 14%, a study suggests.

Living within 50m of a major road could increase the risk of lung cancer by up to 10%, the paper also found.

The study of 13 cities in the UK and Poland found air pollution contributes to a higher chance of heart disease, strokes, heart failure and bronchitis.

Campaigners called on the government to commit to tackling “dangerous” air pollution in the UK.

The report written by King’s College London analysed 13 health conditions in people living in high pollution areas and compared them to the general population.

It focused not just on hospital admissions and deaths but also symptoms such as chest infections.

The study found roadside air pollution stunted lung growth in children by approximately 14% in Oxford, 13% in London, 8% in Birmingham, 5% in Liverpool, 3% in Nottingham and 4% in Southampton.

Researchers also said if air pollution was cut by a fifth, there would be thousands fewer cases of children with symptoms of bronchitis across those UK cities.

    ‘Public health crisis’

“Air pollution makes us, and especially our children, sick from cradle to the grave, but is often invisible,” said Dr Rob Hughes, senior fellow at the Clean Air Fund.

“This impressive research makes this public health crisis – which affects people all across the UK – visible, and shows the urgency with which all political parties must prioritise cleaning up our air.”

Dr Penny Woods, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, called on the UK government to legally commit to the World Health Organisation’s targets to clean up the country’s “dangerous” air.

WHO’s clean air target is for 40 µg/m3 – 40 micrograms of annual nitrogen dioxide per cubic metre of air.

“It seems as if every day we see more and more evidence of the terrible health effects air pollution is having on our lungs,” Dr Woods said.

“It’s the most vulnerable that are hit hardest,” she added.

“We know air pollution stunts our children’s still-developing lungs and those with a lung condition can find their symptoms are made far worse by poor air quality.”

The group behind the study – a coalition of 15 health and environment NGOs, including the British Lung Foundation – is calling for a national network of Clean Air Zones across the UK.

Toxic air pollution in central London has reportedly fallen by a third since the introduction of a new traffic charging zone.

  • DR Congo measles: Nearly 5,000 dead in major outbreak

Measles has killed nearly 5,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2019, authorities said, after the disease spread to all the provinces in the country.

Close to a quarter of a million people have been infected this year alone.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says this is the world’s largest and fastest-moving epidemic.

Measles in DR Congo has now killed more than twice the number who have died of Ebola there in the last 15 months.

Measles claims over 2500 lives in DRC

The Congolese government and the WHO launched an emergency vaccination programme in September that aimed to inoculate more than 800,000 children.
But poor infrastructure, attacks on health centres and a lack of access to routine healthcare have all hindered efforts to stop the spread of the disease.

Four million children have been vaccinated, but experts warn that this amounts to less than half of the total in the country – and not enough vaccines are available.
The majority of those infected with measles in the country are infants.

    What is measles?
Measles is a virus that initially causes a runny nose, sneezing and fever.
A few days later it leads to a blotchy rash that starts off on the face and spreads across the body.

Ghana launches nationwide campaign to fight Measles-Rubella

Most people will recover, but measles can cause life-long disability. It can be deadly, especially if it causes pneumonia in the lungs or encephalitis (swelling in the brain).

It is estimated that a global total of 110,000 people die from measles each year.

  • YPM lauds social interventions by Akufo-Addo’s government

The Youth Patriotic Movement (YPM) has lauded the Nana Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for policies related to youth development in Ghana.

The movement noted that the current government has done a lot in that direction and deserves commendation.

As a result, the Executive Strategic Officer of YPM, Mr Ishmael Osei Ofori, has called on the Ghanaian electorate to consider giving the President a second term, saying it would be prudent to support the second tenure of office for him.

Dan Botwe proposes withdrawal of Dec 17 referendum over alleged attacks on Akufo-Addo

According to Osei Ofori, it would be prudent to support Nana Akufo-Addo with a second term mandate in the 2020 elections.

He observed that a nod to keep the government in power would help it to stabilise the economy and continue to create employment avenues for the youth.

The UPM leadership said Ghanaians, particularly parents and the youth in general, are reaping the full benefits of the free Senior High School (SHS) under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, while farmers who could not afford to buy fertilisers and other farm inputs are now also enjoying the benefits of the “Planting for Food and Jobs” project.

The YPM head also mentioned that university graduates who were seriously frustrated to the extent of forming the Unemployed Graduates Association have now been absorbed into the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) modules and receiving monthly stipends to support themselves and their families.

National Shrine: Akufo-Addo and his appointees are comedians Senior Statesman fumes

These and many more social interventions go to explain how committed the President was in a bid to improve a lot of the average Ghanaian.

“We applaud the gallant achievements of the government, and pray that it grows from strength to strength and adds to the list of feats for the benefit of Ghanaians in the ensuing years,” Mr Osei Ofori said in a statement.

  • Publish 200 kindergarten blocks – Minority challenges government

The Minority in Parliament has challenged the Akufo-Addo administration to publish the number of kindergarten blocks it has constructed since 2018.

According to Ranking Member on the Education Committee of the House, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the government promised to construct 200 blocks to boost access to early childhood education but that is yet to materialise.

“You do not see any serious attempts being made to make sure that the basic level education is given the necessary attention that it deserves,” he stated.

All qualified newly trained teachers will be posted Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

He added, “the basic education level is in dire need of infrastructure and if that is not done the future is uncertain.”

Parliament on Thursday convened to debate over the 2020 Budget and Economic Policy presented by Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on November 13.

The Minority further argued the government has paid little attention to basic education thus affecting the quality of education at the foundational level.

“We need to prepare our children adequately in the basic school to enable them go to Senior High School. So if all our attention is on free SHS and we neglect the basic level, then where are we going,” he asked.

Mr Nortsu-Kotoe highlighted that the government’s failure to provide textbooks of the new curriculum to basic schools as an indication of the deliberate attempt to stifle education at the basic level.

Ghana re-elected to UNESCO Executive Board

“What do we expect our teachers to use to teach our children?”

“Due to that we are being informed that there will be no end of term examination at the basic level this term which is very sorry,” he stated.

He then called on the Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to ensure textbooks are provided urgently since the first term of the academic year s almost ended.

“We need to make sure that the adequate funds are provided,” he charged.

A lawyer in the court pleaded with the Magistrate to temper justice with mercy and give him lesser punishment in order not jeopardise his education.

The court subsequently asked the student to pay 80 penalty units, which amounts to GH¢1,500, but he pleaded that he could not afford to pay, which it later reduced it to 50 penalty units or GH¢600.

The Minority in Parliament has questioned President Akufo-Addo’s contribution to the country’s infrastructure sector since he assumed office in 2017.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament today, the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu Consistuency John Abdulai Jinapor compared Mahama’s contribution to infrastructure to Akufo-Addo’s questioning the tendency of Akufo-Addo winning the 2020 elections

”This is a government that has decided that spending on infrastructure, roads is not a priority to them. Theirs is to spend on consumption. Today, Fmr President Mahama can boast of hospitals, international airports, interchanges, roads. What will Akufo-Addo be remembered for in relation to the coming elections. What will the people consider to vote for him, the only thing he will be remembered and left for us is free shs and double track.”

He also said that it takes a dedicated and committed party to boost the Agricultural Sector in the country

”In Agriculture, Akufo-Addo’s government have launched planting for food and jobs and other slogans. If you look at the Agric sector based on the Minister’s assertion it is dropping from 4.6 to 2.2. Managing the Agric sector, its not about Ghanarism, its about a dedicated and committed party to do that”.
