Horrific car crash leaves Wendy Shay with head injury, rushed to hospital

Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has been involved in a near-fatal car accident on the Kwabenya-ACP road on Saturday night, September 9, 2023.

According to Prince Obimpeh, Deputy News Editor at UTV, who witnessed the accident scene, Wendy Shay was driving her Wrangler with the customized number plate SHAY 23-19 coming from Kwabenya towards ACP Estate when she collided with a tipper truck loaded with sand coming from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision caused Wendy Shay‘s car to skid into a gutter on the side of the road, while the tipper truck overturned and landed on its side. The front side of Wendy Shay’s car was badly damaged, and she sustained a head injury.

Obimpeh said he saw Wendy Shay come out of her car and thus approached her to find out what happened. She, however, told him that she could not talk much and that her head was aching after hitting the dashboard. She also seemed disoriented and confused.

There was another lady in the front seat of Wendy Shay’s car, but it was unclear if she was with her or not. Obimpeh said people were helping Wendy Shay remove all valuables from her car before they transported her to the hospital. He said he spoke to her, and she seemed fine, but she complained of a severe headache.

Eyewitnesses said that Wendy Shay tried very hard to avoid the crash, but they collided anyway. They also said that if her car had not skidded into the gutter, it would have somersaulted.

Obimpeh said people kept shouting that the tipper truck driver was stuck in his car, but he did not see him in there. He said the police were present at the scene of the accident, but he did not know their status.

Wendy Shay is one of the most popular singers in Ghana, known for her hit songs such as Uber Driver, Bedroom Commando, and Stevie Wonder. She is signed to Rufftown Records and has won several awards, including New Artiste of the Year at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Below is a transcript of Prince Obimpeh, Deputy News Editor at UTV’s narration:

“I am between ACP Estate and Kwabena junction. The road is free at night, and although there is a police presence, cars normally move at top speed. As I passed by the KNUST Accra Campus junction, I saw a lot of people around two cars, so I decided to park and have a look. When I got there, I saw a lady come out of a car with dreadlocks that looked like Wendy Shay’s.

So, I decided to have a closer look, and I saw that it was Wendy Shay’s Wrangler with the customized number plate. I got closer and asked her what was happening. She said she couldn’t talk much and that her head was aching, and her head hit the dashboard. I asked what, and she said the truck. The people around said a tipper truck loaded with sand was coming from ACP estate to Kwabenya, and Wendy Shay was coming from Kwabenya to ACP estate. According to eyewitnesses, Wendy Shay tried very hard to avoid the crash, but they collided anyway. The eyewitnesses say that if her car hadn’t skidded into a gutter on the side of the road, it would have somersaulted. The front side of her car is damaged, and Wendy Shay is complaining of a severe headache.

People were also helping her remove all valuables from her car before they transported her to the hospital. I spoke to her, and she seemed fine, but all she told me was that her head hit something, and her head was hurting her.

There was another lady in the front seat and another car parked on the side. I can’t tell if that lady was with her. I think it is very serious. She was a little disoriented and seemed confused.

The tipper is lying on its side, and Wendy Shay’s car is partially on the road and partially in the gutter. People kept shouting, saying the tipper truck driver was stuck in his car, but I did not see him in there.”

  • NEW LAW: Whistleblowers to receive 10% of loot from economic crimes – Attorney General reveals

NEW LAW: Whistleblowers to receive 10% of loot from economic crimes – Attorney General reveals

Ghana has introduced a new law that offers incentives to whistleblowers who report economic crimes and misconduct, according to the Attorney General, Godfred Dame.

Speaking at the 40th Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime as the keynote speaker, Mr Dame said that the government has amended the Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720) to include a reward system for whistleblowers.

He explained that the new law, which was passed by Parliament about a month ago, ensures that 30% of all revenue generated from cases based on whistleblowers’ information is paid into a fund, and 10% of the income directly attributable to whistleblowers’ efforts is paid to them.

Mr Dame said that this was part of the government’s efforts to “boost the whistleblower regime” and to improve the nation’s ability to fight corruption and other forms of unlawful conduct that negatively affect its development.

He also noted that any serious endeavour to fight economic crimes must be firmly rooted in the establishment of systems for deterrence, investigation, prosecution, and punishment in a fair and efficient manner.

In his address, Mr. Dame stressed the importance of integrity and its role in combating economic crimes. He highlighted Ghana’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in its financial and economic sectors.

He discussed the critical role of public procurement in Ghana’s development and its susceptibility to corruption, emphasizing the need for robust regulations. He cited Article 284 of the Constitution, which forbids public servants from placing themselves in situations where their personal interests interfere with or are likely to interfere with the discharge of their duties.

Furthermore, Mr. Dame touched on the Public Procurement Act of 2003 (Act 663), which regulates public procurement undertaken with public funds. He acknowledged that, despite protective measures, corrupt activities continue to occur within the procurement process.

The Attorney General also discussed the Menzgold case, a significant scandal involving illegal financial activities. He pointed out that unethical behaviour often thrives on the vulnerability and ignorance of victims and can lead to financial losses and social crises.

To combat corruption and promote transparency, Ghana passed the Right to Information Act in 2019, allowing citizens to access information held by public institutions.

Mr. Dame’s address also highlighted the government’s efforts to digitize various sectors to enhance transparency and eliminate corruption. He cited the digitization of the financial sector, including a Paperless Port System and E-Justice Systems, as examples.

He then, stressed the importance of international cooperation in combating economic crimes, highlighting the need for states to work together to address the threats posed by criminals who exploit differences between countries.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY THE HONOURABLE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA AT THE FORTIETH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ECONOMIC CRIME

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SYMPOSIUM, Mr. Saul Froomkin, KC,

THE CO-CHAIRMAN OF THE SYMPOSIUM AND PROFESSOR AT THE CENTRE OF DEVELOPMENT STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE, Prof. Barry Rider,

    MY LORDS,

HER MAJESTY’S ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR ENGLAND AND WALES,

HONOURABLE ATTORNEYS-GENERAL FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES REPRESENTED HERE,

HONOURABLE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

THE RT. HON. LORD MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CAMBRIDGE,

THE RT. HON. LORD MAYOR OF THE CITY OF LONDON,

SENIOR MEMBERS OF THE JUDICIARY Gathered here,

HEADS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT INSTITUTIONS AROUND THE WORLD gathered here,

THE DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL & DEPUTY MINISTER OF JUSTICE of the Republic of Ghana,

    Good morning everyone.

I bring you greetings from the President and the people of the Republic of Ghana. I feel honoured to be invited to deliver a Keynote Address at the 40th Cambridge Symposium on Economic Crime.

This is my third appearance at this forum, and my second as Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Republic of Ghana. My sincere gratitude, and congratulations as well, go to the Chairman and Co-Chairman of this Symposium, Saul Froomkin KC and Prof Barry Rider, as this week will see a consolidation of the noble activity they have been engaged in the past 40 years. Year after year, this forum literally brings under one roof those at the helm of the prevention and reduction of abuse to the financial system worldwide, and whose voices and actions matter globally, in the establishment of values that protect the global financial system from the consequences of economic crime and misconduct. From Attorneys General around the world to senior legislators, judicial officers, diplomats, leading academics in law and business and police chiefs in over 100 countries, participants have regularly analysed and examined the constantly evolving threats facing the global financial system as a result of criminal and other nefarious activity.

In all of this, distinctly, the Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime is far from being a mere talk shop. Its enviable track record for being a global platform that delivers practical solutions to economically motivated crime and misconduct worldwide is truly established. We must applaud Prof Barry Rider and Saul Froomkin KC for the consistency in the organisation of this symposium.

The theme for this year’s symposium – Integrity – could not have been more appropriate. Integrity is the one word which runs through the grain of everything we do as persons concerned with enriching any system we work with. In the words of former US Senator, Alan K. Simpson, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you do not have integrity, nothing else matters”. Classically, this sums up the importance and indispensability of integrity in every situation including the creation of a world economic order insulated from the nefarious activities of criminal and unethical behaviour.

Whilst noting that the use of the word “integrity” may be more common in professional and personal contexts, the intricate relationship between integrity and economic practices cannot be lost. The creation of a clean, transparent and accountable financial environment is dependent on structures and systems anchored in integrity. The deployment of sophisticated schemes to circumvent procedures and facilitate the commission of crime and other kinds of improper conduct in the global financial space, brings into sharp focus questions of ethics and integrity. The manifestations of economic crime are increasingly getting complex because of various actions by professional enablers whose conduct borders on unethical behaviour. These are breaches of procedures, violation of laws, laundering, creation of shell companies, opaque financial systems and concealment of illicit wealth.

Mr. Chairman, the intricacy and multidimensional nature of economic crime undoubtedly enjoin us to have a network of gatekeepers such as lawyers, bankers, real estate agents, insurance service providers and luxury service providers who are bound up by strong rules of ethics and accountability. A free, progressive and equitable society requires a world with men and women of integrity.

GHANA’S EFFORT IN PROMOTING INTEGRITY IN THE ECONOMIC SECTOR

Ghana has had and continues to have its fair share of threats to its financial and economic sector. In my role as Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Republic, I have come to understand that any serious endeavour to fight economic crimes must be firmly rooted in the establishment of systems for its deterrence, undertaking of smooth investigations where same occur and a sound vehicle for prosecution and punishment in a fair and efficient manner.

These systems have a close connection with the peculiarities of the Ghanaian society.

In Ghana, public procurement plays a preeminent role in the development of the nation. At the same time, public sector corruption evokes strong emotions. In view of this, the nation has enacted a set of rules, from the Constitution of the country to specific laws in the financial sector, founded on the principles of integrity, to regulate procurement in the public sector and to curb abuse and insider trading. Thus, public servants are forbidden by article 284 of the Constitution from placing themselves in situations where their personal interests interfere with or are likely to interfere with the discharge of their duties.

One piece of legislation that is directly intended to prevent economically motivated crimes and the abuse of office is the PUBLIC PROCUREMENT ACT of 2003 (Act 663). Annually, the Ghanaian government and public institutions enter into many contracts, for the provision of infrastructure, goods, and services. The Procurement Act regulates such procurement undertaken with public funds. The guiding principles of the Procurement Act of Ghana are fairness, transparency, non-discrimination, the attainment of a clean process in order to obtain value for money, promote a competitive local industry and increase the confidence of stakeholders in public procurement processes in the country.

In addition to this, the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921) enshrines a body of laws to regulate the financial management of the public sector within a macroeconomic and fiscal framework and defines the responsibilities of persons entrusted with the management and control of public funds as well as the accounting and audit of public funds.

Mr. Chairman, the question to ask is, have these sets of laws been foolproof for wrongdoing? The answer is a resounding no! Indeed, it is the case that wrongdoers will always find a way. They will constantly devise artful means of evading the long arm of the law. In spite of these protective measures, corrupt activities occur at various stages in the procurement process. These unquestionably have a significant negative impact on the economy and harm the development of society. Insider trading is just one of many unethical behaviors. Some officials responsible for procurement activities in various public institutions abuse the trust by engaging in what is popularly known as “behind the scenes” business with contractors and suppliers. The unique position they occupy gives them access to insider information, which they unethically convey to contractors or suppliers to hand an unfair advantage to them over their competitors in a bidding process. This practice results in dissatisfaction and defeats the principle of fairness in procurement. The detection of false or inconsistent claims by contractors is hampered by the illicit protection extended by public procurement officers who have the mandate to detect and revise them.

The most chilling, and perhaps shocking case of insider dealing was witnessed when a former head of the Public Procurement Authority was implicated in what was notoriously dubbed “Contracts for Sale”. As the head of the Procurement Authority, he was alleged to have established a company in which he held majority shares and which also actively bid for government contracts. This company was alleged to usually win the contracts which were then sold to other contractors at a higher price. The revelation of these acts promptly resulted in the termination of his employment by the President of the Republic and a withdrawal of his membership of various professional institutions and subsequent prosecution which is still ongoing. The record also shows a trial of other cases involving insider dealing in various courts in Ghana.

Mr. Chairman, last year, I spoke about a phenomenon that afflicted the financial sector of Ghana between 2018 and 2020, that is, the emergence of many unlicensed financial entities operating illegally. The leaders of such entities often lived a lavish lifestyle on the proceeds of their illicit activities. I indicated that prominent among such entities was an amorphous organisation operating a microfinance institution under the guise of – guess what – gold trading and illegally using the name of a bank. It called itself Menzbank, before metamorphosing into “Menzgold”. It dealt in the purchase and deposit of gold collectibles from the public and issued contracts with guaranteed returns to clients without a licence from the relevant authorities.

The modus operandi of that company highlighted some of the major factors for the success of some fraudsters. These are ignorance, vulnerability and greed of the victims. In this situation, the vulnerability and ignorance of thousands of otherwise hardworking Ghanaians was the oxygen for the operations of the company, as we often witness in the case of many Ponzi schemes around the world. People paid their life savings to the suspects in the case, resulting in losses worth millions of dollars and in some cases, loss of lives. The misery and distress caused to many homes nearly unleashed a social crisis as riots and demonstrations broke out on the streets of Accra and other parts of the country. In reality, people lost their homes, and some marriages even broke up as a result of the Menzgold saga. I am happy to state that after painstaking investigations, criminal prosecution has commenced against the perpetrators. At last, by the Grace of God, justice will be served to victims of those dastardly acts.

In my respectful view, transparency is the bedrock of integrity. Thus, with the understanding that the haven for economic crimes is an atmosphere conducive to its concealment, and that, access to information remains a vital tool in the elimination of economic crimes, the Government of Ghana in 2019, ensured the passage of the Right to information Act 2019 (Act 989). The Act provides for the implementation of the constitutional right to information held by a public institution to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in public affairs, subject to a few exemptions necessary and consistent with the protection of the public interest in a democratic society.

I have observed an increased utilisation of the Right to Information Act, by Ghanaian citizens to access information from public officers. Accountability is indeed the winner.

Mr. Chairman, the Government of Ghana has boosted the whistleblower regime by promoting a law to amend the Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720) which introduces a reward system for whistleblowers.

The new amendment, passed by Parliament only about a month ago, ensures that thirty per cent of all revenue accruing from cases conducted on the strength of a whistleblower’s activity is paid into the Fund, and 10% of the income directly generated by the whistleblower’s efforts is paid to the whistleblower.

Coupled with the centrality of access to information, we have identified a deliberate policy of digitalisation of the Ghanaian environment as crucial to the creation of accountability and integrity in society. Policies like a robust National Identification System, Digital Property Address System, Paperless Port Systems, E-Justice Systems, Pensions and Insurance data and a digitised Land Title Registry have as their overarching objective, the need to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the public space.

A digitised environment ultimately helps to eliminate and prevent corruption in various institutions and agencies. Important institutions of state like the Passport Office, Ports and Harbours, Office of the Registrar of Companies, National Health Insurance Service and the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority, which hitherto were fertile grounds for corrupt activity, have been remarkably transformed. The introduction of the Ghana.Gov platform, making it possible for services to be accessed and payment made online by card without the conduit of middlemen, has significantly reduced the risk of public sector corruption through embezzlement.

There is an inimical tendency on the part of public officers to enter into contracts with high rates of interest especially compound interest. In order to curb this tendency, my Office has successfully sponsored the enactment of an amendment to the Contracts Act, 1960 (Act 25) to prohibit the payment of compound interest by the State in transactions entered into on her behalf by public officers. This amendment was passed into law in July, this year, a month ago. The state’s hard-pressed purse will be further protected by this amendment to the Contracts Act.

The need to ramp up international effort and cooperation to tackle economic crimes

Our survival as a global community depends on the continuous trust reposed in us. We must bear in mind that businesses exist to do business and to make profits which, ultimately, will be at the expense of the rights of others. The extent to which they succeed depends on the society, population, and “culture” in which they operate. We must be acutely aware that the development and integrity of the global financial system are at risk from exploiters of weaknesses in the system to perpetrate financially motivated crime. But we can conquer wrongdoers and opportunists through a coordinated effort based on mutual cooperation between criminal justice partners and the private sector worldwide.

Criminals exploit differences between countries to further their objectives, enrich their organisations, expand their power, and avoid detection or apprehension. They gain influence in government, politics and commerce through corrupt and illegitimate means. The need for states to cooperate in combating the threat of economic crimes is, therefore, more than imperative.

Certainly, the interaction between business, politics and justice is crucial and that is what makes this forum truly remarkable.

The consequence of a failure of integrity is far too dire to contemplate. When those who have been entrusted with authority to ensure that right procedures are followed derelict on same, the trust and confidence of the people are abused.

We need to punish corruption and other forms of economic crime through a fair, honest and efficient justice system. As I have said before, a robust legal system, underpinned by the rule of law, goes hand in hand with economic prosperity as it bolsters the confidence of the people and deters the perpetration of wrongdoing. The efficiency of a nation’s justice system is tested particularly by the speed and efficiency with which cases seeking to hold high-profile members of society to account as well as top financial crimes, are conducted.

May we be guided by the words of the famous American salesman and author, Zig Ziglar “Integrity gives you real freedom because you have nothing to fear since you have nothing to hide”.

I wish you a fruitful week as we listen to the rich insight of distinguished and accomplished speakers from around the world gathered here.

Thank you. God bless us all!!!

Kasoa-Winneba road: Sex worker killed by truck while demanding money from ‘client’

A tragic incident occurred on Friday night at Triple X near Buduburam on the Kasoa Winneba Highway in the Central Region, when a 28-year-old sex worker, Anabel, was killed by a tipper truck while allegedly demanding money from a taxi driver whom she claimed was her ‘client’.

According to Kasapa News’ Yaw Boagyan, Anabel had hired a taxi from Kasoa to Awutu Bereku to visit her client, but on reaching Triple X, she started fighting with the taxi driver, accusing him of having sex with her without paying some time ago. The taxi driver denied the allegation and refused to pay her.

The fight was separated by some bystanders, but Anabel was not satisfied. She sat in the middle of the highway and demanded GHC80.00 from those who intervened, insisting that the taxi driver had cheated her.

As she was sitting on the road, a speeding tipper truck loaded with sand came from Awutu Bereku and ran over her head, killing her instantly.

The Gomoa Budumburam Police were called to the scene, and they transported Anabel’s body to the morgue at St Gregory Hospital.

The driver of the tipper truck has been arrested and is cooperating with the Buduburam District Police Command as they conduct their investigation into this unfortunate incident.

WASSCE candidates under police escort and parental supervision at OPASS

Some West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates at Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS) are reportedly writing the exams under strict conditions due to their involvement in criminal activities and misconduct.

Four candidates are undergoing this year’s West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) under the watchful eye of police escorts, while a staggering 63 others are accompanied by their parents.

The 4 candidates under police guard have been allegedly entangled in a web of criminal activities, including instances of robbery. Notably, one of these examinees is currently on remand and is taking the exams from the confines of the Akyem Tafo Police cells.

According to a GhanaWeb report, one of them, Kelvin Bonzy, who was granted bail by the police for robbery, was stabbed to death by a mob in Koforidua when he attempted to rob a female student of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in July this year.

The remaining 63 students who arrived with their parents or guardians have reportedly been involved in various acts of misconduct on the school premises leading up to the final examinations.

In an effort to address the concerning rise in indiscipline among final year students after registering for WASSCE, school management has instituted a policy where students found guilty of grave misconduct can be deboardinized, while those engaging in criminal activities will be handed over to the police.

In adherence to the directive issued by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the school has mandated that all 67 candidates associated with these misdemeanors wear an all-white uniform, setting them apart from their peers during this examination period.

Meanwhile, in an incident that has sparked outrage, a WASSCE candidate at the Ofori Panin Senior High School examination centre was subjected to humiliation as an invigilator forcefully stripped him half-naked for wearing attire that did not conform to the prescribed dress code.

This event unfolded during an English Language paper when the student arrived wearing a white top and brown khaki shorts instead of the mandated all-white attire. The invigilator’s actions have drawn attention to the alleged maltreatment and intimidation faced by candidates at the examination centre.

Senegal’s Seydina Konate beats Ghana’s Freezy Macbones in Olympic qualifier

Ghanaian boxer Seth Gyimah, popularly known as Freezy Macbones, has failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after losing to Senegalese opponent Seydina Konate in the light heavyweight (80kg) division.

The bout took place in Dakar, Senegal, as part of the Africa Olympic Boxing Qualifiers, which started on September 5 and will end on September 12.

Freezy Macbones, who started professional boxing five years ago and has had two professional fights so far, was hoping to secure his ticket to the Olympics for the first time in his career.

However, he faced a tough challenge from Konate, who is a former African boxing champion in Zone 2 in Sierra Leone.

The Senegalese boxer dominated the fight from the start and landed several powerful punches on his Ghanaian rival. He won by a unanimous decision of the judges, who scored the bout 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in his favour.

Freezy Macbones has yet to comment on this development. So far, netizens have encouraged him to keep going despite this setback, while others believe he was not well-prepared for a fight like this.

Ken Ofori-Atta allegedly begged Kennedy Agyapong to drop out of NPP race

Deputy Ashanti Regional Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, has revealed that their candidate is facing intense pressure from some top party members and government officials to withdraw from the flagbearership contest.

Ohemeng Ian Moore Ian Moore, said in an interview on Akoma FM on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, that some of the people who have been pleading with Kennedy to step aside allegedly include his close contenders, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He claimed that Ken Ofori-Atta called Kennedy at dawn to withdraw from the race

“Today, it is the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta that they have appointed to plead with Kennedy Agyapong to withdraw from the race, to make way for Bawumia. But I say, with Kennedy, before you think about something, he has already thought ahead of you. I am not joking, I am talking with all seriousness. They have now changed their strategy, and today it is the Finance Minister they are using, he boldly said.

“And our honourable Kennedy Agyapong told them to stop playing around. So I am telling everyone, Kennedy Agyapong will not withdraw today or tomorrow,” he recounted in Asante Twi dialect.

Ian Moore also claimed that, individuals in the Dr Bawumia campaign team who have asked Kennedy to withdraw have admitted that they may not win the 2024 general elections without his support.

“They are also saying that if Kennedy does not campaign for the NPP, Bawumia will lose the elections… If you know you can’t win without Kennedy, why are you treating him badly?” he added.

  • Bugri Naabu seeking social media attention with audio Leak – CPP National Communications Director

Bugri Naabu seeking social media attention with audio Leak – CPP National Communications Director

The National Communication’s Director of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Sylvester Sarpong, has expressed his disappointment over the leaked tape saga involving the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, and some senior police officers.

Speaking on NeatFm, 100.9 fm, Sarpong said that he was saddened by the fact that parliament had nothing better to discuss than the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, when Ghana was facing economic hardship and people were suffering.

“Considering the current economic challenges facing Ghana, the struggles people are enduring to secure food, and the overall pressure in the country, it’s disheartening that parliament convened solely to address an issue involving Bugri Naabu and a leaked tape. This situation saddens me deeply,” he said.

He said that Bugri Naabu had breached the trust and confidentiality of the traditional authorities, who have judicial powers similar to those of the court, by exposing his conversation with them. He wondered if Bugri Naabu was doing this for attention or for some benefit from the Akufo-Addo palace.

“Our traditional authorities hold judicial powers similar to those of the court, especially in matters related to chieftaincy. There exists an element of attorney-client privilege between chiefs and their subordinates. Therefore, when someone confides in a chief, there is an expectation of confidentiality. Bugri Naabu had a fiduciary duty to maintain the privacy of such conversations, but he has breached that trust,” Mr Sarpong explained.

He also lamented that Bugri Naabu had exposed the sad reality of partisanship in the security sector.

“I find myself wondering whether Bugri Naabu seeks attention to gain popularity on social media or if there might be other motives behind his actions, or maybe he is a contractor at the Akufo-Addo palace. His actions have exposed a disheartening reality: the existence of ‘NPP police’ and ‘NDC police,’ as well as ‘NDC immigration officers’ and ‘NPP immigration officers’ in Ghana,” he mentioned.

Bugri Naabu has admitted to secretly recording his conversation with Superintendent Asare and COP Mensah, who allegedly tried to persuade him to implicate Dr Dampare in an attempt to discredit his administration and subsequently depose him. He has also been caught in fresh leaks with corruption implications, involving contracts, and his inclusion in the police payroll.

Parliament has set up a committee to investigate the matter and has summoned Bugri Naabu and the police officers involved to appear before it. The committee is chaired by the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta-Akyea.

How IGP Dampare reportedly escaped death four times from his own colleagues

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reportedly survived four poisoning attempts by some of his colleagues who are unhappy with his leadership style and reforms.

This shocking allegation was reportedly made by one Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, the Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, a civil society organization that advocates for peace and security in the country.

In an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Frontline on September 7, 2023, Daniels claimed that those who are opposed to Dampare’s vision and approach to managing the police service have tried to kill him by poisoning him four times, but failed each time.

“Do you know that there have been four failed attempts on the life of Dampare? Four times they have attempted to poison him but were unsuccessful. They attempted to poison him because he no longer entertained indiscipline and misconduct on the part of police officers,” Daniels revealed in a bombshell interview.

Daniels praised Dampare for bringing about several positive changes and introducing dynamic reforms in the management of the Ghana Police Service, and said that Dampare has transformed the service and improved its professionalism, efficiency, and accountability.

She is said to have alleged that these transformations have made him a target of envy and hatred from some individuals who are plotting to derail him and tarnish his reputation.

Daniels emphasized that the ongoing investigation into a leaked tape, allegedly involving high-ranking police officers and a former Northern Regional New Party (NPP) chairman plotting against the IGP, sheds light on the extent of this sinister conspiracy.

“If you have a leader who has a vision and he is implementing the vision and a few are against him, that should tell you how evil these few people are.

“What is happening is unfortunate and denigrates the Police Service. The evil of a few people, including interdicted officers, is affecting the Police. It’s a shame that these officers have been exposed. These officers who have been interdicted are nation wreckers. Take a look at how Officer Asare was carrying himself. It was disgusting, and Ghanaians should not entertain such evil plots,” she added.

The police administration had earlier announced in a press statement that it was suspending the three officers involved in the leaked tape, namely Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Mr. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, and Superintendent Mr. George Lysander Asare, pending further disciplinary actions in accordance with Police Service regulations.

However, some public debates had argued that the suspension was hasty and unjustified, before the police administration reversed its decision.

Both press statements were issued on the same day, September 7, 2023, and signed by the Director of Police Public Affairs.

  • Why Bawumia phoned Ken Agyapong to apologise

Why Bawumia phoned Ken Agyapong to apologise

Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has personally reached out to the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, to apologise for any unfortunate incident that might have occurred during the recent super delegates’ election of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This was revealed by campaign coordinator for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign and Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) Sammi Awuku, during an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi Tv’s The Point of View on Monday night.

Mr Awuku, while touching on Dr Bawumia’s countenance, before, doing and after the party’s Super Delegates congress on August 26th 2023, said that he was present when Dr. Bawumia after the elections, spoke to Hon. Agyapong last week and listened to his concerns and grievances.

“Let me say, for instance, the Hon. Kennedy Agyapong like this. Last week, I was personally present when the Vice President spoke to him, to listen to Ken as well on some of the issues that he has raised, and he said that me and my team are very sorry for whatever might have happened, but we are also going to go a step further to assist the party in its investigation,” Awuku said.

This information is particularly critical because, during the delegates’ conference on August 26th, a viral video showed Hon. Agyapong screaming threats at the President and his Vice for allegedly asking for his polling agent to be sent away. Mr. Agyapong said he would give the two leaders a “showdown” in response to the said attacks on his agents during the elections.

“President Akufo-Addo, I will give you a showdown in this country, I swear to God. Vice President, I will give you a showdown for chasing my agent away. I swear to God. You will hear what will happen here. I swear to God, I will challenge President Akufo-Addo big time,” Mr Agyapong said in fury.

However following this and the ensuing response by party authorities to investigate the incident, Mr Awuku noted that Dr. Bawumia, who just wants peace to prevail, is deeply saddened by any incident that might have caused personal loss or damage to anyone because of the electoral process. He said that Dr Bawumia has, beyond contacting Mr Agyapong, has also reached out to his other colleagues who contested in the election.

“Dr. Bawumia is deeply saddened about any unfortunate incident that took place. And he believes that we don’t need to have anybody suffering personal loss or damage because of an electoral process. And it is something that he has also personally placed and reached out to his colleagues who contested in the process,” Mr Awuku added.

He also said that Dr. Bawumia and his team are willing to assist the party in any investigation and condemn any act of vandalism or violence that might have taken place.

“For almost everybody who has been mentioned, named, or suspected to have participated in anything that might have personally injured somebody, for our side, from the Dr. Bawumia side, we are willing to assist the party in any investigation, and we condemn any act of vandalism and any act that took place and any isolated reported incident,” he mentioned.

Awuku further explained the strategy and approach that Dr. Bawumia used to win the superdelegates’ election with 68.15% of the votes. He said that Dr. Bawumia personally interacted with almost all the 929 delegates who cast their ballots on August 26th. He also paid visits to over 70% of them and placed personal calls to some of them 48 hours before the election.

“Our strategy leading to August 26th was, first of all, to make sure we tick all the boxes. Make sure you have reached out to each and every single person who is likely to cast a vote. He also, in the run-up to August 26th, apart from having met the Members of Parliament as a group, having paid over 95% of these 137 Members of Parliament personal visits at home, Dr. Bawumia, 48 hours before the super delegates sat behind his phone and placed personal calls, the run-up to the get-out-the-vote on August 26th.”

He said that their target was to get 70% of the votes based on their polling and profiling, but they fell short by 1.85%. He said that they have done a review of their performance region by region and identified some areas for improvement.

“Our target, to be very honest with you, and I am going to be very honest with you on this show, we were expecting to get 70% based on all our polling, based on all our profiling ahead of August 26th. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the 70%, but we had 68.15%.So for us as a campaign team, my colleagues, both in the strategy and in the operations team, personally doing a review, region by region, and so far we have done 15 out of 16 regions, an analysis of what happened.”

He also commended the party’s Elections Committee for their supervision and good job in conducting a free and fair election.

The super delegates’ election was held on August 26th to select the presidential candidate of the NPP for the 2024 general elections. Dr. Bawumia emerged as the winner with 629 votes out of 929 valid votes cast. He was followed by Kennedy Agyapong with 132 votes representing 14.3%, Alan Kyerematen with 95 votes representing 10.29%, Owusu Afriyie Akoto 36 representing 4.1% and Francis Addai-Nimoh 9 votes.

The election was marred by some reports of violence, intimidation and bribery in some regions.

The NPP has set up a committee to investigate the allegations and complaints and take appropriate actions.

  • How a Ghanaian pilot’s flying surprise turned wild as mom freaked out and ‘fought’ him

How a Ghanaian pilot’s flying surprise turned wild as mom freaked out and ‘fought’ him

A hilarious video of a Ghanaian mum’s reaction to her son’s flying surprise has gone viral on social media. The son, Kwesi, who lives in the UK with his family, had secretly trained to become a private pilot and wanted to give his mum the thrill of her life.

Kwesi had always dreamed of being a pilot, and his mum was his biggest supporter. But she had no idea that he had been learning how to fly and had earned his wings. He decided to show her his skills by taking her on a plane ride, and he captured her priceless reactions on camera.

He posted the video on his Instagram handle skyking_233 in 2021, with the caption: “My mum has always been my biggest supporter, and she knew I always wanted to be a pilot. What she didn’t know was I’d been learning how to fly and kept it as a surprise for her. I couldn’t just TELL her I’d earned my wings, I had to SHOW her. And thankfully I caught her raw reactions on camera 😩😂 Enjoy!

In the video, Kwesi’s mum is seen sitting in the passenger seat of a small plane, unaware that her son is the pilot. When he announces to her that he is going to fly the plane, she starts to panic and scream, saying “you won’t fly this plane. Where do you think you are going, Kwesi stop! stop!”

Kwesi tries to calm her down by showing her his licence, but she is not convinced. She reluctantly agrees to let him fly the plane, but as soon as they take off, she begs him to land again.

As they touch down safely, Kwesi’s mum takes out her phone and records her son piloting the plane, with a big smile on her face. She says, “that’s my sneaky boy.”

The video was recently shared by Twitter user @niilexis and reposted by @AsieduMends, and it has generated a lot of laughter and comments from other users.

Many people said that Kwesi’s mum’s behaviour was typical of Ghanaian mothers, who are protective and cautious of their children.

Others praised Kwesi for fulfilling his dream and giving his mum such an unforgettable experience. Some even wished that they could do the same for their own mothers someday.

AUDIO: “Fool!… even someone like you has a choice” – Alan campaign manager’s alleged insults and threats to polling agent pops up

A leaked audio recording has surfaced online, purportedly featuring a private phone conversation involving Sylvester Tetteh, the Member of Parliament for Ngleshie Amanfro, and an individual identified as a polling station executive.

In the brief 2-minute and 15-second audio clip, which has gained traction on social media, a voice that Ghanaweb has attributed to the MP, can be heard expressing his fury without restraint as he hurls demeaning words at the person on the other end of the call.

Sounding infuriated, the voice reported to be that of Sylvester Tetteh, referred to the other person on the line as a fool and an illiterate who does not deserve to have an opinion.

The angry voice proceeded to issue what seemed to a warning to the polling station executive.

The MP, while spewing further derogatory words, firmly advised the caller not to discuss him or his preferences. He admonished the executive never to comment about him or his decision to support Alan Kyerematen again.

He is reported to have said, if even the caller who is an illiterate has the freedom to make choices, then he, too, has the same privilege without objection.

“I detest nonsense, do you understand me? Do you believe we are equals? Even someone like you has the ability to make choices. Let this be the last time you mention my name in connection with my decision on any platform. You, an illiterate who cannot even write his name, can also make choices. Let me make it clear; from this day forward, if you dare write or record anything about me and my support for Alan, the consequences will be far from pleasant for you. Do you hear me?” he is quoted to have said.

The angry person then proceeds to question the caller’s political knowledge, warning him not to meddle in his choices again.

    Mr Alan Kojo Kyeremateng

Sylvester Tetteh who is reportedly behind the angry voice, also hinted that if provoked, his reaction would be uncontrollable, cautioning the other party to steer clear of his affairs.

“I am not issuing threats… a fool like you… even someone like you can make choices… even if you are older than me and you misbehave, do you not expect me to address it? Are you rational? Have you received an education? What is your grasp of politics? Can you even write your name? Let me reiterate that from this point onward, if I catch wind of you discussing me or my choice of a leader, you will experience the consequences of your actions. If you are a man, challenge me, and you can interpret this as a threat or anything you wish,” he adds.

The exact date of this conversation remains unclear, but according to a GhanaWeb’s report, the exchange between the two individuals initially began in a WhatsApp group chat, after which the MP felt compelled to initiate a phone call.

GhanaWeb’s source also indicates that the person on the other end of the line may have also hurled insults at the MP, although such remarks were not captured in the audio shared online.

  • Are you an NPP member?…Do not answer this question! – Atta-Akyea defends COP Alex Mensah

Are you an NPP member?…Do not answer this question! – Atta-Akyea defends COP Alex Mensah

A parliamentary ad-hoc committee investigating a leaked tape involving some senior police officers and a former NPP regional chairman has witnessed a heated exchange between the members of the committee and one of the witnesses.

The witness, COP Alex Mensah, who was the Director-General of Technical Operations until about 3 months ago, was grilled by the committee on Thursday, August 31st, 2023, over his alleged involvement in a plot to remove the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare and replace him with another officer.

The plot was allegedly discussed in a recorded conversation between COP Mensah, one Commander Asare, a Superintendent Gyebi and the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, who claimed that he recorded the conversation to protect the interest of his party, the New Patriotic Party(NPP) and report it to President Akufo-Addo.

During the questioning, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South, Hon Eric Opoku, who is also a member of the committee, asked COP Mensah about his political affiliation and whether he was a card-bearing member of the NPP.

This question sparked a controversy among the members of the committee, as the chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta-Akyea, who is also the MP for Abuakwa South and an NPP member, intervened and asked COP Mensah not to answer the question.

Atta-Akyea argued that the question was unfair and had far-reaching consequences for COP Mensah’s career and future ambitions. He said that what he could glean from COP Mensah’s earlier statement was that he was a blood-carrying member of the UP tradition, which is the precursor of the NPP.

However, Opoku insisted that his question was harmless and based on a statement that was captured in the leaked tape as having been made by COP Mensah himself.

Opoku also accused Atta-Akyea of trying to gag him from asking questions and preventing COP Mensah from answering them. He said that he wanted to establish whether COP Mensah’s political affiliation had influenced his professional conduct and loyalty to the IGP.

The exchange between Opoku and Atta-Akyea was interrupted by another member of the committee, Patrick Yaw Boamah, who is also an NPP MP for Okaikwei Central. Boamah supported Atta-Akyea’s position and said that Opoku’s question was very dangerous. He said that COP Mensah may have ambitions later in life and that Opoku wanted him to make some admissions that could be used against him.

The committee eventually moved on to other questions after Atta-Akyea asked Opoku to proceed with his questioning. The committee is expected to submit its report to Parliament within two weeks.

Read a transcript of the exchange below

Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Hon Eric Opoku: COP Mensah, when you were Assistant Superintendent of Police, the current IGP was a sergeant. Is that correct?

COP Alex Mensah: That is true.

Hon Eric Opoku: And you became Assistant Commissioner during the time of President Kufuor, is that correct?

COP Alex Mensah: That is true, Mr. Chairman.

Eric Opoku: And the 8 years that the NDC was in office, you were never promoted. Is that correct?

COP Alex Mensah: That is true, Mr. Chairman.

Hon Eric Opoku: Nana Addo came and made you a commissioner. Is that correct?

COP Alex Mensah: That is true, Mr. Chairman.

Hon Eric Opoku: And so when you make a statement like this as was captured in the audio “Mi di3, I have been NPP member since long time before I even joined the service and now we need… Because if we don’t break the 8. Me that is my only objective. Anybody I meet I tell them,. We need this man, he can’t help.” You have been an NPP member long time before you joined the service. Is that correct?

COP Alex Mensah: Mr. Chairman, my family has been in the UP tradition ever since I was born and we have remained there till now.

Hon Eric Opoku: So as we speak are you a card-bearing member of the NPP?

COP Alex Mensah: Mr. Chairman, I am not ready …

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea: I think you have answered it in a way that you are not a card-bearing….It is leading you into temptation. What is the meaning of this? How can you ask….

Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah: Chairman, with the greatest of respect, I don’t think this question ought to be admitted.

Samuel Atta Akyea: I was just going to tell him. This is not fair.

Patrick Yaw Boamah: Dangerous, very dangerous. He may have ambitions later in life and you want him to make some admissions? Samuel Atta-Akyea: I think, I am trying to do what is honourable that this is too far reaching. What I can glean from what he is saying is that he is a blood-carrying member of the UP tradition. That is what he said. So please do not answer this one. I crave your indulgence. It is too far reaching.

Eric Opoku: Mr chairman, I asked this innocuous question based on a statement that is captured here as having been made by the witness especially when he indicated that “I have been an NPP member since long before I even joined the service.”

Samuel Atta-Akyea: Would you want to ask him whether he has NPP sympathies?

Eric Opoku: Mr Chairman, I thank you very much, but I will also entreat you with all respect that when I pose harmless questions, the witness should be allowed to answer those questions; otherwise it will appear that you don’t want us to ask those critical questions.

Samuel Atta-Akyea: You see this particular one, with the greatest respect has far reaching consequences and bear in mind they have to settle his moneys and the rest of it you know.. and what he says here could be a weapon. But I would never gag a member of this committee from asking questions. So please you can proceed.

BREAKING: Coup in Gabon: Military officers claim to overthrow Bongo

A group of senior military officers in Gabon have announced on national television that they have seized power from President Ali Bongo, who won a disputed third term in the recent general election.

They said they represent all the security and defence forces of Gabon and that they have cancelled the election results, dissolved the state institutions, and closed all the borders until further notice.

The officers, who called themselves the Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon, said they acted to defend the peace and restore democracy in the oil-rich but impoverished nation. They accused Bongo of being unfit to rule and of rigging the election, which was marred by delays, irregularities, and a lack of international observers .

Gunshots were heard in the capital, Libreville, shortly after the televised coup announcement, according to a Reuters reporter. The government has not yet commented on the situation, and it is unclear how much support the coup plotters have among the military and the population.

Bongo, who has been in power since 2009, succeeded his father Omar Bongo, who ruled Gabon for 42 years. He won the presidential election on Saturday with 64.27% of the vote, according to the official results announced on Wednesday by the Gabonese election centre. His main challenger, Albert Ondo Ossa, came second with 30.77% and denounced the vote as fraudulent .

The election was held amid high tensions and fears of violence, as Bongo sought to extend his family’s 56-year grip on power while the opposition demanded change. The authorities had suspended some foreign broadcasts, cut internet service, and imposed a night-time curfew nationwide after the poll, raising concerns about the transparency of the electoral process .

American musician Miguel Jontel Pimentel , is not afraid to push the boundaries of his art, and he proved it with a stunning and shocking stunt that left everyone speechless. The 37-year-old singer literally hung by hooks on his back to perform a song from his upcoming album, Viscera.

The daring act took place at Sony Studios in Los Angeles on Friday, August 25, where Miguel hosted a special four-song concert to preview his new album. Before singing “Rope”, two assistants came out to insert metal rods in piercings through Miguel’s back and wires lifted him up in the air.

The song’s lyrics are fitting for the stunt, as they say, “I’m hanging on to nothing / I’m hanging from the ceiling / Rope around my neck.”

The performance, which was also live-streamed, was billed as a “boundary-pushing performance” for the musician, who since 2017, hasn’t released a full-length album.

According tp reports by TMZ, Miguel spent several months preparing for this daring stunt.

Miguel, earlier this month in an interview with The Los Angeles Times opened up about planning the experience, saying “Initially it was a bit of, ‘What is the most extreme way to push outside of what’s expected?’” Miguel told the outlet. “How far can I go in demonstrating how far I’m willing to go for art, for conversation? I couldn’t have known how committed I was to the real purpose of this shit until I had hooks in my back.”

He said that hanging by hooks on his back made him confront his fear and control issues.”It was a scary and freeing experience and emotion to go through because it’s such a light switch,” he said. “It has so much to do with pain. What does pain mean?”

Miguel confessed that he wrote “Rope” when he was going through a dark phase before marrying Nazanin Mandi in 2018. The now exes called it quits in September 2021 after getting hitched in Nov. 2018. They had a long history together, dating for almost 14 years since they were both 18. They got engaged in 2016.

“I don’t think I’d ever been in a place where I was creating from there,” Miguel said. “You build a reputation and a repertoire around love and sex and sexiness — these completely unrelated tones. Getting to the point where I allowed myself to express these emotions was a bit of a journey.”

Nkwatia Presby headteacher accused of blinding student with heavy slap

A headmaster of the Nkwatia Presby Senior High School in the Eastern Region has been accused of extreme physical abuse on a female student identified as Diana, leading to her alleged partial blindness.

According to a blogger who posted the information on his Twitter handle @SIKAOFFICIAL1, with images of the victim looking forlorn and with a black eye, the incident happened when the student, who is in second year, had reportedly left school without an exeat.

However, it later turned out that she actually had permission to leave campus, but the headmaster, who is in charge of academics, refused to listen when she tried explaining to him.

“He made her kneel down for a period of time and when she told him that she was unwell, his alleged response was that he would lash her to make her feel better. She mistakenly held his cane when he was about to lash her and this infuriated him and prompted him to land a hefty slap on her face, after which he beat her up,” the blogger reported.

There are conflicting reports on exactly what transpired, as social media is filled with different versions of the story. However, all accounts so far point out how Diana was mercilessly beaten by the headmaster in question and allegedly mistreated on campus.

One social media user who claims to have a sibling in the school also alleges that Diana was later discriminated against by some other teachers and was isolated to write her exam in the staff common room.

Netizens have called on the Ghana Education Service to take up the matter, as s instances of maltreatment within Senior High Schools, involving either teachers or students mistreating fellow students, have become increasingly prevalent.

  • EC received elections results through WhatsApp – EC Director

EC received elections results through WhatsApp – EC Director

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that it used WhatsApp, a widely-used messaging app, to receive and organize the results of the NPP Super Delegates Congress on August 26, 2023.

The event was intended to pick five presidential hopefuls out of ten candidates who want to compete for the NPP flagbearership in 2024.

Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, explained that the Commission got the results through WhatsApp from 17 voting locations across the country.

The EC projected these results on a screen for candidates’ representatives to check and confirm. Once everyone agreed, the results were written down and combined.

Dr. Quaicoe said this method was quicker and more efficient than doing the process twice, which would have taken more time and effort. He also noted that there were no complaints from the field or the representatives; everyone accepted and signed off on the results.

“We didn’t do double collation. We were receiving the results through WhatsApp. So what were were doing is that when the results comes through the WhatsApp, then we project the results that has come through our notice for them to compare and with what they have, so once they all agree, then we transfer them to the collation sheet, and we collate it. So were were showing them the results we were getting from the field and how the collation was also going so that nobody can complain that we didn’t have this, we did not have that, ” he said.

He mentioned that only five representatives out of ten showed up at the EC headquarters for the result collection. Dr. Quaicoe thanked security personnel for keeping everything safe and praised everyone involved for their good behavior.

“For the commission,. we didn’t receive any complaints from the field. The results were sent to us. We have five of the agents here. We did the collation with them. They have accepted the results. They have counter signed the collated results, taken their copies and they are gone, so it means that they don’t have any issues with the results. So farm I will say that it has been good,” he said.

The NPP Super Delegates Congress results showed that Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came first with 629 votes, which is 66.29% of all the votes. In second place was Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a Member of Parliament, with 132 votes, or 13.91%.

Other candidates and their votes included Trade and Industry Minister Mr. Alan John Kyeremanteng with 95 votes (10.01%), Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto with 36 votes (3.79%), former MP for Mampong Mr. Francis Addai-Nimoh and former Energy Minister Mr. Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, both with 9 votes each, or 0.95%.

Those who doubt Agyapong’s presidential credentials have pointed out his tendency to be outspoken and controversial, which they think might not fit the diplomatic role of a president. They wonder whether he can exercise the necessary restraint and respect that a leader should have.

One Twitter user, @__Sharyf, summed up this view in a tweet: “You can say what you want but Kennedy Agyapong is not presidential material.”

On the other hand, those who support Agyapong’s presidential ambition have highlighted his candidness and connection with the masses. They believe that Agyapong’s frankness and courage have earned him the admiration of many Ghanaians who see him as a champion of their interests.

This group suggests that a break from the conventional political culture might be beneficial for the country to bring new ideas and solutions.

They also argue that Agyapong could run as an independent candidate and win the presidency with his grassroots appeal.

As the conversation goes on, netizens are divided over whether Agyapong’s blunt style and popular base could make him the next president, potentially changing the political landscape of the country.

  • ‘We will die and leave everything behind!’ – Roads Minister tackles corruption in current administration

‘We will die and leave everything behind!’ – Roads Minister tackles corruption in current administration

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has spoken out against the rampant corruption and theft in his ministry under the current administration.

Mr. Amoako-Attah, while addressing the range of actions taken by his staff that have hindered the overall progress of the government, expressed deep dismay at the conduct exhibited by certain members of his team and other officials.

Even though he has tried curbing such behaviours by firing a few complicit individuals, he asserted that the new ones he employs happen to do far worse than the old ones.

“There are a lot of corrupt people, there are a lot of thieves in my ministry. You sack them, you employ new ones, and when they come, the new ones are even worse than the old ones that you sacked, what kind of country are we building for ourselves?” he said.

He said that he did not know what people wanted and why they were so greedy and selfish. He said that everyone would die one day and leave everything behind, so they should be patriotic and honest.

“I don’t know what people want, we will die and leave everything behind. All of us, those who came before us are all gone. We heard the big names, people with money and wealth, where are they? Look at what we are seeing and we are citizens of this country?,” he asked.

Mr Amoako-Attah made these remarks on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, during a visit to the ongoing VALCO roundabout-Kpone road reconstruction project.

The minister expressed how saddened he was by the poor state of some roads in the country, especially those that had been damaged by heavy trucks carrying cargo from the Tema Port to neighbouring countries.

He said that these trucks did not respect the axle load regime and overloaded their vehicles, thereby destroying the roads that had been constructed with millions and billions of money.

“All of us and our government is spending millions and billions of money to fix our roads. We get transporters from other neighbouring countries; coming to pick cargo from your ports and they don’t respect our axle road regime. See all these vehicles here and they park for hours un-end.

“My information is that some of them are now going through the documentation process at the port so they park on the shoulders of the roads for more than 24 hours. They have destroyed the shoulders of our roads and when they come to the roads themselves, because of the unauthorized axle load that they carry, the roads that we spend our hard-earned monies to build, they destroy them,” he said.

He also accused some officials at the port, the axle load centres, and the road barriers of taking bribes from the truck drivers and allowing them to pass through without checking their weights or documents. He said that these officials were betraying their country and contributing to its underdevelopment.

He said that these truck drivers could not do the same in their own countries, such as Burkina Faso and Cote D’Ivoire, where they had to offload part of their cargo before entering. He lamented that some Ghanaians were calling on the president and the government to fix the country, but they were not fixing themselves or their attitudes. He questioned what kind of country they were building for themselves and their children.

“And my information is that they cannot do the same in their countries; the French-speaking countries; Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire, and so on, when they get to Paga, they offload part of their cargo before they enter those countries but in our country, we have axle road centers; the road from the port, there’s supposed to be an axle road center there, we have barriers on our roads, we have some of the customs people manning some of our barriers, the police are manning our barriers but they have free access through our corridor. What are we doing to our country? Because of bribery and corruption and we are the same people who called on the president, who called on the government to fix the country,” he noted.

Mr Amoako-Attah therefore appealed to all stakeholders in the road sector to cooperate with him and his ministry to ensure that the roads in the country were well maintained and improved.

He said that he was determined to deliver on his mandate and fulfil the vision of President Nana Akufo-Addo to make Ghana a model of development in Africa. He warned that he would not tolerate any acts of corruption or theft in his ministry and that anyone who was caught would face the full rigours of the law.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has expressed frustration at the level of corruption and theft allegedly in his ministry.

  • Betting tax: I cannot criticise my ‘colleague’ Akufo-Addo – Lil Win

Betting tax: I cannot criticise my ‘colleague’ Akufo-Addo – Lil Win

Celebrated comic actor, musician, and entrepreneur Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has offered insights into the intricacies of presidency and the challenges inherent in governing a nation.

During a recent interview on Silver FM as part of his media tour to promote his upcoming movie “Mr President,” Lil Win was questioned about the current betting tax implemented by the Akufo-Addo administration. The tax applies to all sports betting, lottery, and games of chance.

In response, Lil Win reflected on the daunting nature of leading a nation, stating, “When I heard about the policy, I was silent. You see; since the creator added me to the crew of presidents, I have realised it is not an easy job. I have really suffered. Governance is not easy. It is stressful. The insults help me develop though. Now; since I have also become a president, I can not say anything about my colleague Nana Addo and his undertakings. But concerning my country Omofia, what I know is that tax is not a bad thing. It is good for a country, for a man, and for development.”

He further expounded, “In my perspective, if I’ve fostered ample job opportunities in my nation and there exists a surplus of vacancies while willing candidates remain scarce due to widespread betting, I then put a 40% or 60% tax on betting. Because I have created a lot of jobs and we need workers, but you as a young and able person do not want to come and work and would prefer betting, you want fast money, then , I’d apply a substantial tax. Secondly; assuming there is no money, and betting is where you get your money, and truthfully a lot of the young people get their daily bread from betting, that is why the current tax is now a worry. A lot of people are citing unemployment as their reason for engaging in betting.”

Lil Win suggested an alternative approach, “In such scenarios, a potential solution for Nana could have been this. Since he has not created jobs and there is no work for them to do, this is what I would have done. I have noticed that when you increase tax from the onset with a high percentage, it really upsets people , so if he had started from 2 % and then gradually progressed to 3% and then to 5% and then to 10%, people would not be so bothered because the increment is in phases and is gradual. But moving from nothing straight to 10% is why people are complaining. But not in my country. I have not yet imposed taxes in my country. My intention is to ensure substantial job creation before considering such levies. With that I can decide to close down all betting activities or put an 80% tax on it.”

The recent betting tax under Akufo-Addo is a new law that was passed by the Ghanaian parliament in April 2023. It imposes a 10% withholding tax on winnings from sports betting, lottery, and games of chance. The purpose of the law is to generate revenue for the government as the country faces economic challenges. However, the law has been met with opposition and criticism from those who depend on betting for income.

Lil Win’s upcoming movie “Mr President” casts him as the leader of the fictional nation Omofia. The comedy film, produced by Lil Win himself and directed by Jackson K. Bentum, is set to premiere on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Kumasi’s Royal View Cinema.

‘I am not feeling well’: Abuontemhene’s words before de-stoolment

The Abuontemhene of Kumasi Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Duah III, uttered these words as he faced the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over allegations of illegal land sale. However, his plea for mercy did not save him from being de-stooled by Otumfuo with immediate effect.

Nana Kwaku Duah III was brought before the Asantehene and other members of the Kumasi Traditional Council over allegations of disregarding Otumfuo’s directives and engaging in the sale of lands, including one that was under investigation and subject to a trespassing warning by Otumfuo.

He was also accused of using Otumfuo’s name to gain approval for his activities on the land in question, despite the ongoing investigation, and of venturing into territory belonging to others and facilitating land sales without proper authorisation.

In response to the allegations, Nana Kwaku Duah III denied the specific accusation of using Otumfuo’s name as leverage for his actions. However, he acknowledged his presence on the land but asserted that he allowed others to work on it with his permission.

“With all due respect, Nana, I am not feeling well, I’m feeling dizzy now…but I am pleading because, to be honest, and to speak the truth, I have never stood anywhere before to claim that his Lordship has ruled over a matter in my favour, that is the exact truth I have never claimed that before, what I said to Nana Acheamfour is that, I permitted them to work on the land,” he said.

During the proceedings, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II gave the subchiefs an opportunity to present their evidence and testimonies against Nana Kwaku Duah III. After listening to both sides, Otumfuo announced his decision to de-stool Nana Kwaku Duah III as the Abuontemhene of Kumasi Traditional Council.

Otumfuo said he would not tolerate any chief who disrespects his authority and engages in illegal activities that tarnish the image of the Ashanti Kingdom. He warned other chiefs to learn from Nana Kwaku Duah III’s fate and abide by the rules and regulations of the traditional council.

$250m head office building is ‘not just a simple ordinary building’ – BoG Governor

The governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison, has defended the construction of a new head office building at a cost of $250 million, saying that it is not just a simple ordinary building, but a modern and secure facility that meets the requirements of a central bank of international standards.

He said that the building, which is being modelled on similar central bank head office buildings in Abuja and Dakar, would include state-of-the-art facilities such as data centres, currency processes, vaults, and other sensitive installations.

The project has attracted criticism from some sections of the public and the minority in parliament, who have questioned the rationale and the cost of the building amid economic hardship and alleged procurement breaches.

Dr Addison, however, said that the bank followed all the necessary public procurement processes in undertaking the project and did not break any procurement laws.

He also gave a brief history of how the project evolved over the years, saying that the bank had been searching for suitable and secured land for a new head office since the 1990s, but faced several challenges in acquiring vacant possession of various lands allocated to it by the Lands Commission.

He said that it was only in 2018 that the bank was able to acquire a 5.19-acre land at Ridge near the Ridge Hospital from SIC, with the help of an executive instrument issued by the government. He said that SIC was duly compensated for the land.

Dr Addison explained that the decision to commence construction was taken in 2019 when the bank generated profits. He said that appropriations for the head office were made each year from profits in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

He submitted that the project which has been going on for over three years and is about 50 per cent complete and that he was fully aware of the need to ensure that the costs do not escalate beyond reasonable levels and that many of the original design features have been deferred, and only grey boxes provided for future use to manage costs.

He made these statements at a special press briefing on August 21, 2023, where he also addressed other issues relating to the bank’s 2022 financial statement and its role in supporting the government during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He said that he hoped that his statement would help to put the project into perspective and to clarify key issues that had arisen.

Dr Bawumia sings gospel music all the time – Spokesperson reveals

Economist and spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has disclosed the genre of music that Dr Bawumia loves most.

During a media run on Dr Bawumia’s presidential campaign, Dr Boako, who was on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo with Kwame Sefa Kayi, said that Dr Bawumia’s musical preference reflects his personality.

“Recently I said in an interview with Umaru Sanda that Dr Bawumia’s favourite genre of music is gospel music. He sings it all the time,” he said.

He recalled an incident between Dr Bawumia and the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, where Dr Bawumia impressed the moderator by singing word for word some Presby hymns during an event.

“There was a time when the Presby moderator said that he attended an event where Dr Bawumia was present, and they happened to be seated close to each other. As they sang some Presby hymns, he realised that Dr Bawumia had sung along to all the hymns correctly. He wondered how a Muslim could properly sing Presby hymns in such a manner. And Dr Bawumia responded and said, ‘Oh, do not be surprised, my mother was a Methodist before she became a Muslim’,” Dr Boako recounted.

According to Dr Boako, such traits displayed by Dr Bawumia, his love for God and his unbiased respect for everyone, are characteristics that have been with him since childhood and are verifiable by all who have known him over the years.

“All positive comments about Dr Bawumia are not coming out of the blue. It is an attitude he has exhibited since childhood and throughout his professional life up to this point. Everybody in this country knows that Dr Bawumia is God-fearing and humble.

He respects everyone no matter who they are, in everything he does. Those who know him from his childhood days and know his history know that he is a respectful and humble person who likes unifying people,” Dr Boako added.

The Vice President’s spokesperson then advised all Ghanaians as well as members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to develop or encourage a culture of unity just as Dr Bawumia does, for the sole benefit of the country’s development.

“And so that attitude of unity and peace is what we need, so we can be unified as a country first of all, and as a party, New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, so that when we gain power again, God will give us wisdom to rule the nation. And so Dr Bawumia’s campaign is going on very well.”

Dr Bawumia is contesting for the position of flagbearer for the NPP in the upcoming general election in 2024. As part of efforts to boost his campaign, his team has launched a website under the name bawumia.com, where all information about his campaign is published.

Alternatively, supporters and well-wishers can get the same service by downloading the app Bawumia Connect from any app store service. Also, those who would like to send in donations to help fund the campaign can do so by dialling the short code *202# on any network.

  • Francis-Xavier Sosu is a gift from God – Chief of Teiman praises MP

Chief of Teiman-Madina traditional area, Nii Manle Dzahaa I has described the Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu as a gift from God.

According to him, Francis-Xavier Sosu Esq after assuming his office as an MP has changed the face of politics in the constituency and the country at large.

Explaining his reason in an interview during the 2023 Homowo cleanup exercise in the community, he said the MP is contributing immensely in Parliament by providing quality and effective representation for his constituents and Ghanaians.

He said Xavior-Sosu represents both the poor and middle class in society hence championing both interests in Parliament.

Speaking on unemployment, Nii Manle Dzahaa indicated that the “Sosu Job Center” has reduced the situation in the constituency and also encouraging youth to take up free apprenticeship courses.

On education, he emphasized that the MP’s scholarship fund to support brilliant needy students has benefited many students in his community.

And also the annual Best Teacher Award for both private and public schools within the constituency has been a catalyst to motivate teachers to deliver well.

Touching on Health, Nii Manle said the Sosu “Health Project” has been helping people in the community to improve their health through the frequent health outreaches.
Some residents of Teiman also expressed gratitude to the MP for his generosity and activism in the community.

One trotro driver, Isaac Boakye alias Akporso gave an account on how he was rescued by Lawyer Francis Sosu from been jailed for 14 years.

The chief also bemoaned how partisanship is affecting the MPs effectiveness. He pointed out how the MP is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Municipal chief executive (MCE) is a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). He opined that this difference in party amongst the leaders in the constituency affects smooth flow of work.

According to him, a conversation with Mr Xavior-Sosu reveals how he has appealed for funds from parliament to no avail and thus making it difficult for him to do more work than he has already done.

“As for the MP we have not problem with him. We have seen so much about him. Even this short time he went to parliament, he has done a lot. He has done so many things. so we are supporting him. if he wants to go for another term, why can’t we help him, we can help him.”

“The issue here now is that the MP here is from the NDC and the MCE is also from the NPP. You see we have to think about the people not about party colours. I have had serval discussions with him and he has been telling me because of the party he belongs to, if he asks anything from parliament they don’t want to give it to him. But we have to first think about the human beings, before the party issues comes in. So he has done a lot and we hope he will do more in the near future.”

With the expressed sentiments of the people of Madina towards Xavier-Sosu, it falls upon his fellow parliamentarians on both sides to collaboratively ensure the maximum satisfaction of the members of his constituency.

  • Niger Coup: Every country has committed something to this mission – ECOWAS

Niger Coup: Every country has committed something to this mission – ECOWAS

Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Abdel-Fatau Musah, has reaffirmed the cohesive stance of all chiefs of defence staff from member states in relation to discussions on interventions in Niger.

These discussions took place during a two-day meeting held at Burma Camp in Accra, attended by military chiefs of staff from all member states except those under military rule and Cape Verde.

The purpose was to determine the course of action following the ousting of President Mohammed Bazhoum.

In an interview after the second day of deliberations, Mr Abdel-Fatau Musah conveyed a resolute sense of unity within the Western African Bloc and confidence in the decisions reached during the meeting.

He dispelled the notion of potential dissent among the member states in good standing, stating, “It is beyond our expectation. All the member states have committed something very concretely. All of them. And yesterday we had the arrival of Guinea-Bissau to join us. And so everybody is here and everybody has committed something for the mission. We are very pleased with it.”

Contrary to assumptions that military intervention might be imminent, Mr Musah clarified that it was not the primary option, but rather a contingency that had been thoughtfully considered.

He emphasised the commitment to exploring peaceful avenues for resolving the crisis, while ensuring the restoration of constitutional order.

Mr Musah explained, “This is a plan B. We are ready, but we still give peace a chance. We want them to come forward with very concrete proposals, for a peaceful resolution of the crisis. And that begins by them receiving a mission from ECOWAS. All we want is to make sure that the right thing is done, constitutional order is restored. We do not want to go the military route, and so we are giving every opportunity for the peaceful option to work.”

Since the coup on July 26th, the military junta in Niger has refrained from engaging with ECOWAS or its representatives.

They even issued a warning that the safety of any ECOWAS representative visiting the country could not be guaranteed.

Addressing this stance, Abdel-Fatau Musah conveyed a positive shift, stating, “Over the last couple of days, we have already received assurances that they are ready to receive a mission, and so we will take them at their word. They are ready to engage, and we will oblige them.”

Concerned about misinformation circulating regarding a potential ECOWAS military intervention, Abdel-Fatau Musah urged caution among the media and the public.

He appealed for reliance on official information issued by the ECOWAS commission and advised against being swayed by unverified reports on social media.

“What I would say is that there is so much orchestrated and organized resistance and everybody is focused on the military option, military option. This is not the preferred option of ECOWAS. And so I would appeal to the media and all people who actually love the region to wait for official information from the ECOWAS commission and not to be tempted by social media,” he stated.

    So far, ECOWAS has;

Condemned the coup and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Mohamed Bazoum and other detained officials.

Suspended Niger from all its decision-making bodies and imposed sanctions on the coup leaders and their collaborators, including travel bans, asset freezes, and suspension of financial flows.

Activated its standby force with all its elements, for a possible deployment to Niger to restore constitutional order, while also giving a chance for peaceful dialogue with the junta.

  • This prisoner with 10 girlfriends stole 25 coconut seedlings to pay school fees

This prisoner with 10 girlfriends stole 25 coconut seedlings to pay school fees

Life in prison often unveils the complexities of human stories, each woven with the twists of desperation, survival, and unexpected turns.

Meet Solomon (surname unknown), a 24-year-old prisoner at the Awutu Camp Prison, sentenced to 2.5 years for an act of theft that aimed to secure his child’s education, but left behind a trail of heartache, disappointment, and regret.

Solomon’s embrace of crime was not borne out of malice, but rather a desperate bid to provide for his last-born child’s school fees, according to him.

Once engaged in galamsey (illegal mining), a precarious endeavour, and employed as a tiler, his fortunes took a downturn after business went bad.

Stagnant galamsey operations and a lack of tiling work pushed him to consider stealing, a choice he had never made before.

“I used to be involved in galamsey, but we had been put on hold for a while. I was also a tiler, but patronage was not forthcoming, that is why I thought about stealing. That is the only time I had stolen something,” Solomon recounted in an interview with Crime Check Foundation‘s Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng.

The stolen items were 25 coconut seedlings – a small act that had significant consequences. He intended to sell each seedling for GHC10 and thus arrive at a sum of GHC250.

Unbeknownst to Solomon, his big brother noticed the seedlings and inquired about them. In an attempt to shield himself from suspicion, Solomon lied, claiming they belonged to someone else.

However, fate played a different hand. The true owner of the seedlings reported the theft, setting off a chain of events that led to Solomon’s incarceration.

“My big brother saw them and asked me about it and I lied by telling him they were for someone. Unfortunately, the owner came to announce the theft at the information centre where my brother works, and so my brother told him to ask me about it. The owner was so upset about it, he decided to press charges and here I am,” he explained in the Twi dialect.

As Solomon sat confined behind bars, the weight of his actions bore heavily on his shoulders.

The stolen seedlings, according to him would have paid for his child’s fees (GHC80.00 per terms), as well as daily transportation and feeding fees (GHC7.00).

In an attempt to make sense of his situation, his plight led to introspection, revealing the pivotal role his partner and mother of his two children, played in his downward spiral.

Once enjoying relative prosperity, he strayed from the path of fidelity and indulged in relationships with multiple women, admitting having had at some point, about 10 girlfriends.

However, amidst these women was one “serious” girlfriend he had in addition to the mother of his children.

His partner, who had offered sound advice on financial responsibility and righteous living, found her counsel ignored.

He admitted, “If I had lived right with my partner, I would not have been in prison.”

  • Agenda 111: Govt accused of land grabbing, destroys school building in Nima demolition exercise

Agenda 111: Govt accused of land grabbing, destroys school building in Nima demolition exercise

Startling revelations have emerged following a recent demolition exercise in Nima, a bustling suburb of Accra, which has sparked accusations of land grabbing against the government.

A Kofi TV report sheds light on the destruction of a school building, a church facility, and a prominent workshop housing over 100 engineers in the area.

The land in question, believed to hold historical significance, was home to a school building, a church facility, and a diverse workshop specializing in various engineering disciplines, including electric welding, electrical mechanics, gas welding, engine repair, and more.

Heartbroken residents returned from work to find their homes and livelihoods reduced to rubble. While acknowledging receipt of evacuation notices, they claim they were left in the dark about the timing of the demolition.

An affected resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented the loss of their livelihoods, stating, “They are now destroying people’s shops. Some of us, this is where we get our daily bread. You did not relocate us, you did not find new jobs for us.” The resident argued that had the land truly belonged to the government, it would have been repurposed for public use long ago.

The workshop, a hub of skilled professionals, was a testament to expertise in various fields, including air conditioning, engine repair, and more. “This place is a fitting shop, with different specialists,” the resident explained. “We had over 30 experts… If I tell you we were not notified, I will be lying. We were notified, and we showed it to the chiefs here.” The account further details a night of disruption, as police and utility officials descended upon the area, disconnecting utilities and leaving residents powerless.

The demolition has taken a toll on the community, particularly its children. Some returned from school to find their homes razed to the ground, leading to tears and bewilderment. Appeals for relocation have reportedly yielded no results.

Kofi TV’s investigation brings to light a significant twist. The government’s alleged plan to incorporate the land into the ambitious “Agenda 111” project, which aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure, has raised eyebrows.

Local residents and chiefs maintain that they were kept in the dark about the government’s intentions, and they question the legality of the land acquisition. Some even speculate that the demolition might be a strategic manoeuvre to seize the land for private interests.

The land’s proximity to the President’s residence, the Nima police station, and the Nima roundabout has added a layer of complexity to the situation. Local chiefs have expressed their anger and concern over the government’s actions, further fuelling suspicions of a hidden agenda.

As this saga unfolds, questions about transparency, accountability, and the rights of long-standing residents loom large.

‘I could’ve disappeared if I wanted to’ – Fetish priest who was arrested during Nima demolition exercise claims

A fetish priest who attempted to stop a demolition exercise in Nima, a suburb of Accra, but was arrested by the police has claimed that he had the power to vanish at the time of his arrest.

However, he said he chose not to do so because the police approached him in a friendly manner and he did not expect to be arrested.

The priest, known as Nii Odiasempa, explained in an interview on Kofi TV that he had a strong ancestral connection to the land in Nima and felt angry when he heard that some structures were being demolished by the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly.

He said he consulted the ancestors and they showed him how to deal with the situation using spiritual practices.

“I took a bottle of schnapps and leaves. When I got there, I called them – I wasn’t going to fight them because if it was about a fight, something bad may have happened because our ancestors have shown us that if there are many stones and you pour wine or water on it, it will burst into flames,” he said.

He added that he wanted to teach the demolition team a lesson but he forgave them because of God. He also revealed that he had the ability to disappear if he wanted to.

“When they called me, I could have vanished, yes, I could have vanished, if I had poured water on the ground, a lot of things would have happened,” he said. “I thought they were giving me respect that I should sit down (in their car) for a discussion but unfortunately when I sat down, they sped off.”

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. The demolition exercise was met with resistance from some residents who protested and even summoned the fetish priest to intervene. The assembly said the exercise was to make way for developmental works in the area.

  • BoG whistleblowers exposed rot in Central Bank – Ablakwa reveals

BoG whistleblowers exposed rot in Central Bank – Ablakwa reveals

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been accused of engaging in shady and wasteful practices in the construction of its new Corporate Head Office, which is estimated to cost over US$250 million.

According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, he has obtained information from ‘patriotic’ insiders at the BoG and other credible sources that reveal how the project cost has escalated from an initial US$81.8 million to US$121 million within eight months, and is likely to exceed US$250 million due to variation reports.

“Patriotic Bank of Ghana insiders working with me on this latest oversight project have expressed grave concern about how this BoG office complex which started at US$81.8million, surprisingly shot up to US$121million, and now variation reports are being prepared which are likely to exceed an incredible US$250million,” he wrote.

In a Facebook post on August 17, 2023, Ablakwa said he decided to activate his constitutionally mandated parliamentary oversight role to unravel the mystery behind the project, which he described as extravagant and wasteful.

He said the BoG had violated the Public Procurement Act by using the Restricted Tendering Method to handpick five companies for the project, one of which was not even registered at the Office of the Registrar of Companies.

The BoG, according to him, procured the services of a company called MULTICAD to carry out project management through single-sourcing. An action, Mr Ablakawa describes as ‘another reckless and lawless conduct’.

“Deeper investigations into the shady BoG head office project led me to discover another reckless and lawless conduct by the Addison-led Central Bank when they procured the services of a company known as MULTICAD to carry out project management through single-sourcing,” he added.

He said the BoG had refused to be transparent, candid, and accountable to the good people of Ghana, and had failed to disclose the current cost of the project, the procurement method, the contract award date and the completion date.

He said he was shocked by an interview of Mr. Charles Elias Reindorf, the Director of Finance at the BoG, who abruptly ended an interview when asked about the cost of the project.

“A shocking and embarrassing interview of Mr. Charles Elias Reindorf, Director of Finance at the Central Bank where he abruptly ended an interview following a harmless question on the cost of the project has since gone viral. Instructively, the Bank of Ghana in all its public engagements has refused to disclose the current cost of the project, the procurement method, when the project was awarded and the scheduled completion date,” Mr Ablakwa noted.

He also dismissed the claims by some NPP propagandists that the project started under the NDC when Hon. Ato Forson served on the BoG Board between 2013 and 2017.

He said his intercepted documents showed that the procurement for the project did not commence under the NDC or during the presidency of John Mahama.

  • How BoG allegedly gave US$3.45m to unregistered company MULTICAD through single sourcing

How BoG allegedly gave US$3.45m to unregistered company MULTICAD through single sourcing

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a startling revelation, has uncovered what he alleges to be another case of reckless conduct by the Addison-led Central Bank.

This time, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is accused of awarding a lucrative US$3.45 million project management contract to a company named MULTICAD through single sourcing, a move he says raises concerns about transparency and fair competition.

The information emerged as Ablakwa and his team of investigators delved deeper into the intricate web surrounding the BoG’s head office project.

The procurement of MULTICAD’s services, as detailed in a Public Procurement Authority (PPA) letter dated September 22, 2021, according to Ablakwa violated the conditions outlined in Section 40 of Act 663, which governs the rules for single sourcing.

He argued that the circumstances surrounding the deal do not provide a compelling and genuine reason for MULTICAD to have been awarded such a significant contract without a competitive bidding process.

The company, Ablakwa reveals, was registered on December 10, 2021, about three months after it was awarded the contract. It seemingly secured PPA approval before its official registration, leading to the MPs questions about the timeline of events.

Mr Ablakwa also noted that Governor Addison’s involvement in championing MULTICAD’s single-sourced contract raises suspicions.

The MP wondered the motivation behind sidelining other potential competitors who could have provided more value for money. This move, to him appears contradictory, given the current administration’s past vocal opposition against single-sourced projects, citing potential risks and lack of transparency.

These allegations put the BoG under renewed scrutiny. Concerns about accountability, fairness, and the potential misuse of public funds have ignited a public discourse, with citizens demanding transparency and clear answers from the Central Bank’s leadership, following news about the expense made on the Bank’s new head office project.

This new revelation however, is an allegation by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, yet to be responded to by the BoG.

The matter continues to develop as stakeholders and the public await further clarification from the Central Bank regarding the specifics of the contract award, the selection process, and the rationale behind the decision to single-source MULTICAD for the project management role. A response from The Bank of Ghana, which is yet to happen, together with any further developments may provide additional context and insights.

Unraveling the Bankrupt BoG Head Office Mystery— From an initial US$81.8million, suddenly escalating to US$121million & currently threatening to exceed US$250million

I have depressingly followed the national debate on what many outraged Ghanaians have described as the extravagant and wasteful US$250million new Bank of Ghana Corporate Head Office.

It is obvious from the Bank of Ghana’s feeble and anaemic defence that they have opted not to be transparent, candid and accountable to the good people of Ghana.

A shocking and embarrassing interview of Mr. Charles Elias Reindorf, Director of Finance at the Central Bank where he abruptly ended an interview following a harmless question on the cost of the project has since gone viral.

Instructively, the Bank of Ghana in all its public engagements has refused to disclose the current cost of the project, the procurement method, when the project was awarded and the scheduled completion date.

Some NPP propagandists including Mr. Richard Ahiagbah opportunistically jumped into the fray claiming that the project started under the NDC when Hon. Ato Forson served on the Bank of Ghana Board between 2013 and 2017.

Considering the deliberate distortion, lack of transparency, sponsored obfuscation and naked dishonesty; I decided to activate my constitutionally mandated parliamentary oversight role, so I could unravel the mystery in our collective national interest.

I can today report that I have intercepted unimpeachable, incontrovertible, irrefutable and undeniable documents from the Bank of Ghana and other credible sources which significantly reveal the following:

    1. The Bank of Ghana commenced procurement processes for the controversial palatial head office on 14th January, 2020 when they wrote to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) seeking approval to strangely use the Restricted Tendering Procurement Method;

    2. The PPA by letter dated 28th January, 2020 signed by its Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Frank Mantey communicated approval of the Board for the BoG to proceed with its desire to use the Restricted Tendering Method;

    3. From the intercepted documents, procurement for the project did not commence under the NDC or during the tenure of Hon. Ato Forson as Board Member, neither did it start during the presidency of H.E. John Mahama, contrary to the vicious fabrications by some desperate NPP apologists;

    4. The BoG’s unacceptable use of the Restricted Tendering Method amounts to a blatant violation of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) as amended in Act 914. Section 38 of Act 663 provides a limited scope for the use of Restricted Tendering in circumstances where goods, services or works are available only from a limited number of suppliers or contractors;

    5. From the intercepted documents, the BoG handpicked the following companies: i) Messrs. WBHO Ghana Limited, ii) Messrs. Man Enterprise, iii) Messrs. DeSimone Limited, iv) Messrs. Ronesans Holdings and v) Messrs. Goldkey Properties;

    6. It is not clear what criteria the BoG used in selecting its preferred 5 companies when Ghana’s built environment can boast of many established and celebrated construction firms such as Consar, Berock, Maripoma, Mawums, M. Barbisotti, First Sky, Antartic, Ussuya, Regimanuel, and so on and so forth;

    7. None of the BoG’s shortlisted companies can lay claim to any patent or exclusive capacity which other construction firms in that category do not possess and therefore warranting or justifying the use of restricted tendering;

    8. It is obvious that Ghana would have had better value for money if the BoG had been less shady and opened up the process — opting for a full competitive tendering process;

    9. In a bizarre twist, further investigations reveal that one of the BoG’s 5 “ordained” companies: Messrs. Ronesans Holdings is not registered at the Office of the Registrar of Companies. How did an unregistered company qualify to participate in a restricted tender?;

    10. I intercepted another letter dated 4th September, 2020 also signed by PPA Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Frank Mantey which shockingly reveals that just within 8 months, the cost of the BoG Head Office project astronomically increased from US$81,882,640.00 to US$121,078,517.94.

    11. Experts say this staggering US$40million increase in the project cost between January and September 2020 in a dollar denominated contract is absolutely mind boggling;

    12. A 40% hike merely after tender evaluation in dollar pricing, not cedis, raises many critical questions for the BoG;

    13. A credible full competitive tender process would have avoided this arbitrary cost escalation and guaranteed value for money;

    14. Ironically, all these procurement breaches and sleazy price escalation at taxpayer expense was happening during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when President Akufo-Addo and Governor Addison had given Ghanaians assurances that they had put everything else on hold and were focusing on saving lives. Addison even claimed in June 2020 that the Central Bank was struggling in financing government because of Covid only to initiate this mega project on the blindside of Ghanaians;

    15. Deeper investigations into the shady BoG head office project led me to discover another reckless and lawless conduct by the Addison-led Central Bank when they procured the services of a company known as MULTICAD to carry out project management through single-sourcing. (See PPA letter of 22nd September, 2021 as attached);

    16. Section 40 of Act 663 provides the conditions for single-sourcing which do not apply in this instance;

    17. There is no compelling genuine reason which justifies MULTICAD’s sweetheart deal of US$3.45million from Governor Addison;

    18. What was Governor Addison’s special interest in ensuring that MULTICAD was single-sourced when there are hundreds of competitors out there who should have been allowed to compete for us to have value for money;

    19. Curiously, this is a regime which made considerable noise in opposition against what they described as the dangers of single-sourced projects;

    20. Strangely, MULTICAD’s articles of incorporation secured from the Office of the Registrar of Companies suggest that the company was registered on December 10, 2021 even though it received PPA approval on September 22, 2022. (See copy attached);

    21. These numerous blatant procurement breaches, rigged procurement machinations, magical price escalations and lack of due diligence raise legitimate questions about the stewardship of PPA Board Chair, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and his colleagues at the PPA;

    22. Patriotic Bank of Ghana insiders working with me on this latest oversight project have expressed grave concern about how this BoG office complex which started at US$81.8million, surprisingly shot up to US$121million, and now variation reports are being prepared which are likely to exceed an incredible US$250million. This scary development invokes memories of the scandalous Akufo-Addo Cathedral which started at a US$100million and has now exceeded US$400million;

    23. It is most astonishing for MisGovernor Addison who has presided over the BoG’s biggest losses in living memory of GHS60.8billion to initiate an US$81.8million head office project only to now saddle Ghanaians with a bill which is about three times more. The height of recklessness and gross mismanagement!;

    24. Probably, MisGovernor Addison couldn’t be bothered about the frightening cost escalations for his new empire office project because he thought he could mindlessly continue with his illegal printing of cash;

    25. This exposé clearly shows how MisGovernor Addison and his colleagues in management at the BoG have been deliberately lawless and remarkably destructive. Ironically, they punished others and collapsed their banks for far less.

    26. All well-meaning Ghanaians must join the #OccupyBoGProtest. MisGovernor Addison and his fellow nation wreckers must go! Let us rescue our only country.

    For God and Country.

  • Nigerians have yet to learn hardship the way Ghanaians have – Bright Simons

Ghanaian social innovator and entrepreneur, Bright Simons, has sparked a debate on social media after he compared the prices of some basic goods in Ghana and Nigeria.

Simons, who is the president of mPedigree Network, a platform that fights counterfeit products, tweeted that Nigerians were complaining of unprecedented hardship in recent months due to price hikes.

He added that he had always argued that Nigerians had yet to learn hardship the way Ghanaians mastered it since the 80s.

He then provided a list of some identical goods sold in the same retail chains in Accra and Lagos, and showed how much more expensive they were in Ghana than in Nigeria.

According to Simons, the average exchange rates for the third quarter of 2023 is 11 Ghanaian cedis per US dollar and 850 Nigerian naira per US dollar.

He then gave examples of some products such as Nido milk powder, Milo chocolate drink, Exeter corned beef, Nescafe coffee, Cerelac maize cereal, and Kelloggs corn flakes.

He claimed that these products were significantly cheaper in Nigeria than in Ghana, with some having more than four times the price difference.

He concluded his tweet by saying “Just a wee slice” and “And now the grand contest (ultimate middle class things)”.

Simons’ tweet generated mixed reactions from his followers, with some agreeing with his point and others challenging his data and methodology.

Some Nigerians argued that Simons was not taking into account other factors such as insecurity, income levels, purchasing power parity, inflation rates, taxes, subsidies, and quality standards.

They also pointed out that Nigeria had a larger population and market size than Ghana, which could affect the economies of scale and supply and demand.

They also asked him to consider other aspects of living standards such as health care, education, security, infrastructure, and governance.

Simons defended his tweet by saying that he was not trying to make a value judgment or a political statement, but rather to highlight a factual observation.

He said that he was interested in understanding why there was such a huge price gap between the two countries, and what implications it had for their economic development and regional integration.

He also said that he was open to constructive feedback and criticism, and invited his followers to share their views and insights on the issue.

  • Public outcry over BoG’s GHC 60bn loss; #Addisonmustgo trends on Twitter

Public outcry over BoG’s GHC 60bn loss; #Addisonmustgo trends on Twitter

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is facing a public backlash after it revealed that it incurred a loss of GHC 60 billion in 2022. Many Ghanaians are calling for the resignation of the BoG Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, and his deputies, accusing them of mismanaging the central bank and the economy.

The BoG’s 2022 annual report and financial statement showed that the bank’s total liabilities exceeded its total assets by GHC 54.52 billion, resulting in a negative equity position.

The report also disclosed that the bank spent millions of Ghana cedis on administrative expenses, such as motor vehicle maintenance, foreign and domestic travels, directors’ remuneration, banking supervision, computer and communication expenses, among others.

The BoG has defended its loss, saying that it was mainly due to the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which involved a 50 per cent principal haircut on the bank’s holdings of government securities and COCOBOD loans.

The bank said that it took this action to save the economy from total collapse and to meet the requirements for the approval of the IMF programme.

However, this explanation has not satisfied many stakeholders, who have expressed their dissatisfaction with the BoG’s performance and policies.

Some opposition politicians, such as NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi, Kofi Adams, Cassiel Ato Forson, etc., have demanded that the BoG Governor and his deputies resign or be sacked for their alleged incompetence and recklessness.

The public outrage has also spilled over to social media, where the hashtag #Addisonmustgo has been trending on Twitter since Monday, August 14, 2023.

Many Twitter users have shared their views and criticisms of the BoG’s loss and its implications for the economy and the people. Some have also questioned the credibility and accountability of the BoG and its leadership.

Here are some of the tweets using the hashtag #Addisonmustgo:

UN Report reveals top bribe takers in Ghana

A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has revealed that Lands Commission Officers and Prosecutors, Judges or Magistrates are the public officials who receive the largest cash bribes in Ghana.

The report, titled “Corruption in Ghana – People’s Experiences and Views“, is based on a survey of 15,000 households across the country in 2021.

It collected evidence-based information on the forms, prevalence and typologies of corruption affecting the population of Ghana.

According to the report, the average cash bribe paid to public officials in Ghana was GHC 220, but this varied depending on the type of service sought and the area where the bribe was paid.

The report also found that more than a quarter of the adult population (26.7 per cent) paid bribes to a public official in 2021.

The report showed that Lands Commission Officers received the highest average cash bribe of GHC 1,669, followed by Prosecutors, Judges or Magistrates with GHC 1,208.

On the other hand, health workers (excluding doctors, nurses and midwives) received the lowest average cash bribe of GHC 91.

The report also identified the main reasons for paying bribes, such as speeding up procedures, avoiding problems or fines, or showing appreciation.

It also revealed that most of the bribes were paid at the direct request of the public officials involved.

Corruption is a major challenge in Ghana, which affects its democracy, development and national security.

The report aims to provide benchmark indicators that can be used to inform relevant policies to curb administrative corruption in various public institutions in the country.

  • Cocoa farmers oppose halting of cocoa roads project

Cocoa farmers oppose halting of cocoa roads project

A group of cocoa farmers has expressed its opposition to the plans by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to halt the construction of cocoa roads in key growing areas.

The cocoa sector regulator recently announced that it would discontinue the construction of the roads under its programme once the ongoing projects were completed.

The President of the Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana, Mr Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, said the move would further compound the woes of cocoa production.

He explained that the lack of access roads would affect the transportation of foodstuffs, especially to cocoa growing areas.

“If care is not taken, the country will collapse. A lot of foodstuffs come from Dwaboso, Besem, and the rest. So, if they are stopping the road construction, how can the people from Boso-Nkwanta and the rest, which are the cocoa growing areas, bring their foodstuffs to the various communities or to the neighbouring cities and districts for people to enjoy? Their roads have been deprived of tarring, and they are very dangerous,” he was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

Mr Bonsu also lamented that COCOBOD did not care about the real farmers on the ground, who were working hard to ensure that the cocoa sector was well established.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV42zZDDa_c

“I think COCOBOD has people that they engage, but I am talking about the real farmers on the ground, the concerned farmers, cocoa farmers, and even those of us who are helping to ensure that the cocoa is well established. Nobody touches the cocoa trees in this country, and they don’t even care about us. Even when we give them our reports, they don’t even respond,” he added.

Meanwhile, COCOBOD has explained that the decision was part of a turnaround strategy by the government to ensure that the entity remained viable and focused on its core mandate.

VIDEO: Reverend Obofour finally reveals real source of his wealth

Reverend Kwaku Agyei Antwi, popularly known as Reverend Obofour, the founder and leader of the Anointed Palace Chapel, has sparked reactions on social media after he openly discussed the source of his wealth in a recent video.

During a live broadcast, Reverend Obofour candidly disclosed that his financial prosperity, as well as that of other pastors, is a result of the offerings received from their congregants.

He said that the wealth he has amassed is derived from the contributions and donations made by the members of his church.

He pointed to a pair of shoes he was wearing, which he claimed were expensive, and said that they were purchased with the funds generated from church offerings.

He emphasised that the resources gathered from collections and earnings from church events are reinvested in various business ventures, which ultimately lead to their financial success.

He challenged the notion that any clergyman becomes wealthy independently and asserted that no religious leader can be inherently affluent but rather accrues prosperity through the financial contributions made by their followers.

This revelation adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the financial dynamics of religious leaders and the utilisation of church contributions to facilitate their growth and influence.

  • GHS60 billion loss: We bore 50% of DDEP burden – BoG explains

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified that the government’s domestic debt restructuring exercise was the main cause of its GH¢60 billion losses in 2022.

The BoG said it had to take a 50 per cent haircut on its holdings of government debt instruments, which amounted to GH¢53.1 billion, to help the country meet the debt sustainability criteria for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

According to a statement issued by the BoG yesterday, the domestic debt exchange (DDE) was part of the economic reform programme that Ghana agreed to implement with the IMF in December 2022.

The DDE involved swapping existing domestic bonds for new ones with lower interest rates and longer maturities. The aim was to reduce the stock of government debt from 105 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 55 per cent of GDP by 2028.

However, the statement said that the DDE did not achieve the desired target, as some bondholders, especially households and banks, suffered significant losses.

The BoG had to step in and absorb the remaining gap by exchanging its non-marketable government debt instruments for new bonds at half their value. This resulted in huge impairment losses of GH¢32.3 billion for the central bank.

The BoG also incurred impairment losses of GH¢16.1 billion on its marketable government debt instruments, bringing the total impairments to GH¢48.4 billion.

The statement explained that the BoG’s intervention was necessary to prevent a major economic and social crisis in Ghana, which had faced severe fiscal and debt challenges since 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with global price and supply-chain shocks from the war in Ukraine, had worsened Ghana’s situation, leading to high inflation, exchange rate depreciation, loss of external market access, and pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

The BoG said it had to provide liquidity support to the government and the economy during this period, which also increased its interest expenses and currency issue expenses.

Additionally, the BoG recorded losses of GH¢5.2 billion from price and exchange rate movements and GH¢4.7 billion from impairments of COCOBOD loans.

The statement assured stakeholders and the public that the BoG was committed to prudent management, governance, and transparent accounting and audit practices.

It also stressed that central banks were not commercial banks and that their financial outcomes had little implication for their operations.

The statement said that technically, central banks could not be insolvent or bankrupt, as they could always create money to meet their obligations.

It added that many central banks around the world had reported losses or negative equity in the past without affecting their functions or credibility.

  • Seven years on, what happened to the two Yemeni men who came to Ghana from Guantanamo Bay?

Seven years on, what happened to the two Yemeni men who came to Ghana from Guantanamo Bay?

Seven years ago, Ghana received two former detainees from the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, as part of a deal with the United States.

The two men, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby, were Yemeni citizens who had spent 14 years in captivity without charge or trial.

They were accused of being members of al-Qaeda and enemy combatants, but they denied any involvement in terrorism.

They were given a two-year agreement to stay in Ghana as refugees, subject to security clearances and humanitarian considerations.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/update-ghanaians-on-status-of-ex-guantanamo-bay-detainees-or-meet-me-in-court-ablakwa-to-national-security-minister/

They were also given some financial assistance and medical care by the US government.

However, their presence in Ghana sparked controversy and opposition from some political and religious groups, who feared that they could pose a security or moral threat to the country.

In 2018, the two-year agreement expired, but the Ghanaian government decided to let them remain in the country indefinitely, as there was no exit arrangement in the original deal and returning them to Yemen was not an option due to the ongoing civil war and humanitarian crisis there.

The Foreign Affairs Minister of Ghana, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, said that the two men had become the responsibility of Ghana and that they had not caused any trouble during their stay.

The current whereabouts and activities of the two men are not publicly known, as they have been living under tight security and protection by the Ghanaian authorities. They have not given any interviews or statements to the media since their arrival in Ghana.

There is not much information about what the two men are doing now, as they have kept a low profile and avoided public attention.

However, some reports suggest that they have been trying to integrate into the Ghanaian society and culture, learning English and Twi, making friends with locals, attending mosques, and looking for jobs.

One of them, Khalid al-Dhuby, is also reported to have married a Ghanaian woman and started a family.

  • Ghana among top 10 countries with highest food inflation – World Bank report

Ghana among top 10 countries with highest food inflation – World Bank report

Ghana is facing a serious food inflation crisis, as it ranks among the top 10 countries in the world with the highest increase in food prices, according to a new report by the World Bank.

The report, titled Food Security Update: World Bank Response to Rising Food Insecurity, shows that Ghana’s nominal food inflation (year-on-year) was 54% as of May 2023, placing it at the eighth position globally.

Its real food inflation (year-on-year), which takes into account the overall inflation rate, was 12%, placing it at the ninth position.

The report attributes the high food inflation in Ghana and other low- and middle-income countries to various factors, such as supply chain disruptions, currency depreciation, fuel price hikes, weather shocks, and COVID-19 pandemic impacts.

The report warns that high food inflation could worsen poverty, hunger, and malnutrition among vulnerable populations.

The report also provides data on global food commodity prices, which have increased significantly since January 2021. The report notes that maize and wheat prices rose by 12% and 14%, respectively, in July 2023, while rice prices remained stable.

On a year-on-year basis, maize and wheat prices were 15% and 17% lower, while rice prices were 16% higher.

The report also highlights the state of global hunger and food insecurity, citing the latest edition of the State of Food Insecurity and Nutrition in the World report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other UN agencies.

The report estimates that around 811 million people suffered from chronic hunger in 2020, an increase of 118 million from 2019. The report also projects that around 660 million people will still face hunger by 2030, even if current trends are reversed.

The report also discusses the challenges and opportunities that urbanization presents for food systems, especially in Africa and Asia. The report argues that urbanization can create new markets and jobs for rural producers and processors, as well as improve access to diverse and nutritious foods for urban consumers.

However, urbanization can also pose risks for food security and nutrition, such as increased dependence on food imports, exposure to price shocks, loss of agricultural land, and environmental degradation.

The report also mentions the recent interruption of the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI), an agreement among Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN to facilitate the safe transportation of grain and foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports amid the ongoing war.

The report expresses concern about the potential impact of Russia’s withdrawal from the BSGI on global food markets and prices, as Ukraine is one of the world’s largest grain exporters.

The report concludes by outlining the World Bank’s response to rising food insecurity, which includes providing financial and technical support to countries to address immediate and long-term challenges.

The report also calls for more coordinated and inclusive actions from all stakeholders to transform food systems and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Cecilia Dapaah theft case: Meet the 7 suspects on trial

Cecilia Dapaah theft case: Meet the 7 suspects on trial

Seven people are facing trial at the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a huge amount of money and other valuables from the residence of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, a former minister of sanitation and water resources in Ghana.

The accused persons are Patience Botwe, Sarah Agyei, Benjamin Sowah, Malik Dauda, Christiana Achab, Job Pomary and Yahaya Sumaila.

They are alleged to have stolen $1 million dollars, 300,000 euros and other properties including kente cloths and jewellery from the complainants’ residence. They are also alleged to have gone on an extravagant spending spree with the stolen money, buying houses, cars and other items.

The case has generated public outrage and interest in Ghana, as many people wonder how a government minister could have such a huge amount of money in her house and why she delayed in reporting the theft for seven months. The case has also exposed the corruption and inequality that plague the country’s economy and society.

    Patience Botwe

According to the prosecution led by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, Patience Botwe, alias Maabena, is an 18-year-old hairdresser who used to work as a house help for the complainants. She is the main suspect in the case, as she is accused of masterminding the theft and recruiting others to assist her.

    Benjamin Sowah

Patience Botwe is also the girlfriend of Benjamin Sowah, a 29-year-old plumber who allegedly helped her to steal and hide the money. Patience and Benjamin were arrested in Tamale, where they had rented a three-bedroom apartment and a storeroom with some of the stolen money. They also bought two cars, a Hyundai Elantra and a Honda Civic, and several household items with the loot.

    Sarah Agyei

Sarah Agyei is a 30-year-old unemployed woman who was also a former house help for the complainants. She is accused of being an accomplice to Patience, as she allegedly kept watch of the main gate while Patience entered the complainants’ room to steal their money. She also shared in the spoils and used some of the money to build a three-bedroom house at Budumburam, a suburb of Kasoa. She was arrested from her hideout after Patience mentioned her name during interrogation.

    Malik Dauda

Malik Dauda is a 34-year-old unemployed man who was Patience’s former boyfriend. He is accused of receiving GH¢5,000 from Patience and GH¢100,000 from Sarah out of the stolen money. He admitted to receiving the money during interrogation.

    Christiana Achab & Job Pomary

Christiana Achab is a trader who is married to Job Pomary, a mechanic. They have a son named Franklin Sarakpo, who is on the run. Christiana is accused of collecting GH¢2,830,000 from Patience, knowing that it was stolen money. She used some of the money to buy an 11-unit chamber and hall self-contain house at Budumburam for herself. She also bought a three-bedroom house at Aplaku for Patience and a four-bedroom house at Kokrobite for herself and her husband. She also gave some of the money to her son Franklin to buy two Honda Acura vehicles.

    Yahaya Sumaila

Yahaya Sumaila is an excavator operator who resides at Sagnarigu in Tamale. He is accused of receiving GH¢850,000 from Christiana to buy a three-bedroom house at Amrahia in his name.

    Charges

The seven accused persons face 14 counts of conspiracy, stealing and dishonestly receiving. They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges and have been granted bail or remanded into custody depending on their circumstances. The court presided over by Her Honour Afia Owusuaa Appiah has adjourned the case to August 22, 2023 for further hearing.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has also taken over the case docket after full investigations are concluded. The Special Prosecutor, Mr Martin Amidu, has vowed to ensure that justice is served and that all those involved in the theft are prosecuted and punished according to the law.

The complainants, Daniel Osei Kufour and his wife Cecilia Abena Dapaah, have declined to comment on the case publicly. However, sources close to them have revealed that they are shocked and saddened by the betrayal of their former house helps and that they hope to recover their stolen money and properties soon.

The case has attracted widespread attention from the media and the public, as many people are curious about how the theft was carried out and how the accused persons spent the money. Some people have also expressed sympathy for the complainants, while others have criticized them for keeping such a large amount of cash in their house instead of depositing it in a bank or investing it in a productive venture.

The case is expected to resume on August 22, 2023, when the prosecution and the defence will present their evidence and arguments before the court.
