  • Abandoned Hyundai Gallopers sold at GH¢20,000 each

The about 86 abandoned Hyundai Gallopers left for many years at the Local Government Institute in Madina in Accra, have finally been sold.

They are said to have been sold at Gh¢20,000 each, Mr Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan Constituency and Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed.

He said he was offered one, but did not take it and passed it on to someone else.

It was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpuye who gave the hint of the sale whilst contributing to radio discussions on Accra based Peace FM, Wednesday [August 14, 2019] morning.

Left to rot: $2m Hyundai Gallopers sold for $276k

Nii Lante Vanderpuye pointed to Mr Buabeng Asamoah, who was also a studio panellist as someone whose name was on the list of beneficiaries and asked him to confirm.

Responding, Mr Buabeng Asamoah said his name was on the “chit” but he passed it on to someone else.

The vehicles were imported in March 2000 by African Automobile Limited (AAL) for sale to the government for use by District Chief Executives across the country under the Rawlings administration.

When President John Agyekum Kufuor assumed office in January 2001, his government rejected the vehicles on the grounds that they were expensive and did not also meet specifications for government use.

The then Chief of Staff under President Kufuor, Mr Kwadwo Mpiani explaining why the government rejected the vehicles also added that the Kufuor administration did not receive any documentation on the vehicles from the Rawlings administration.

Mr. Adjei Darko, who was a two-time minister at the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry between May 2003 and January 2005 and July 2007 on his part publicly said there was no document covering the importation of the Galloper cross-country vehicles and therefore government could not accept them.

When President J.E.A. Mills took over from President Kufuor in 2009, AAL made a claim for payment with interest and government reportedly entered into a settlement agreement with the company.

All this while, the vehicles had been left at the mercy of the weather on the compound of the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).

After many years of neglect, the Ministry of Finance this year ordered the valuation and subsequent sale in order to salvage what was left of the vehicles.

The public sale reportedly took place sometime in May 2019.

  • GRA clears air on Free SHS reportage

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has refuted reports the Commissioner-General had said that Free SHS beneficiaries would pay more taxes than non-beneficaries in the future.

A statement signed by Kwasi Bobie-Ansah, Assistant Commissioner, Commuincation & Public Affairs Department read:

Read: Ghana Immigration Service cautions public on fake recruitments

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) wishes to clarify an attribution to the Commissioner-General by a section of the media on whether beneficiaries of the free SHS Policy will pay more taxes than non-beneficiaries in future.

The attribution arose from the reportage of remarks given by the Commissioner-General at a capacity building workshop for members of the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) over the weekend in Koforidua.

What the Commissioner-General said was that the Free SHS Policy is an investment government is making into the lives of the beneficiaries today. The result/impact would however, be felt in the long run. Due to the various skills acquired by the many beneficiaries, when they enter the job market and begin paying taxes, collectively, they would contribute more taxes to national coffers.

GRA is very much aware of the principle of equity in taxation, and therefore would not use different rates for taxpayers on the same income on the basis of benefitting from the Free SHS policy.

The Commissioner-General never said that Free SHS beneficiaries would pay more taxes than non-beneficiaries in the future. The Commissioner-General explained that by virtue of the fact that he benefited from a Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) scholarship as a student, he is able to pay so much tax today. It is his expectation that due to the investment the Free SHS policy is making in the beneficiaries, they will be in a similar position to pay the required taxes in the future.

  • NDC will not abolish free SHS – Victor Smith

Former Ambassador to the UK and Ireland, Victor Smith, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will not abolish the Free SHS policy if given the mandate to govern.

Read: Free SHS beneficiaries will pay more tax in future GRA

“If we get the mandate to come to power we will not abolish Free SHS but rather we review the policy and find a way of making sure the policy is attractive and efficient,”

“I know the benefits of education to the fortunes of development and so NDC would provide the necessary infrastructure to accommodate all students at once,” Victor Smith exclusively told Kwaku Dawuro on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7

Currently, about 362,118 first-year students in public SHSs in the country are benefiting from the policy, with 117,692 of them being day students and 244,426 as boarders.

Due to the increase in enrollment in 2017, the Education Ministry, led by Member of Parliament (MP) for Manyhia South, Dr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, has projected that enrollment for 2018 may hover around 472,730 against reported available seats of 290,737, leaving a gap of 181, 993.

Free SHS was discredited and described as premature by then-candidate Mahama and the NDC during the 2012 election campaign. The President says nobody has copyright over free SHS, and that the policy is in consonance with the constitution of Ghana.

  • Give effect to luxury vehicle tax withdrawal Car dealers to government

The Vehicle Dealers Association of Ghana (VADAG) wants government to take urgent steps to give full effect to the repeal of the luxury vehicle levy.

Last week, Parliament passed a bill to scrap the tax as part of the policy measures presented to the House by Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta in the Mid-Year Budget review but barely a week after, there are concerns from VADAG that the DVLA is still charging the levy despite the critical step taken by Parliament.

President of VADAG, Eric Boateng in a Citi News interview called for the intervention of the government especially the president to ensure that the repeal of the tax is given a full effect.

“As I speak, DVLA is still collecting the money from those using 3.0 and 3.5 liters. We are still looking at it and appealing to the top officials to honour their promise of withdrawing the luxury vehicle tax,” Eric Boateng said.

Hence the Ministry decided on an audit of the company to ascertain the cause of loses.

Findings from the audit were based on Fair Pricing Model utilizing best business practices, open source data as well as information obtained from verifiable business intelligence centers.

Results indicated that an additional revenue residing offshore from 2010 to 2017 with no transfer pricing audit performed prior to 2017 recorded loses of a whopping $259m.

Further, loss of dividends within the period amounted to $6.1m while additional corporate tax due was $79m.

Aside the findings of the audit report, Cheremeh added that in late 2014 and 2015, just before the sales agreement reached between Manganese Trading Limited (MTL) as the sole off-taker of the total volume of the manganese produced by GMCL, there was a manipulation of the sales in order to stockpile ore prior to adjusting the price downwards by $0.65 for every DMTU.

Calculated loss due to this price per production manipulation was conservatively estimated to be $3.6m.

GMCL has however refuted claims that the company has recorded over $200m losses to the state for the period of 2010 2017 as stated by the sector minister, maintaining that the said figure did not tally with that of Ghana Revenue Authority.

“The figures put out there by the Minister in his press conference are therefore inconsistent with that of GRA which is the mandated institution when it comes to tax issues in the country”

  • Ghana Card: Volta NDC raises red flag

Residents in the Volta Region are faced with several difficulties in their quest to get enrolled on to the Ghana card programme.

More than three weeks since the exercise began in the region numerous challenges including network problems, frequent breakdown of machines, long queues, sleeping at registration centres overnight among others were observed.

Following these developments, Executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region have raised concerns and filed complaints at the National Identification Authority (NIA) for explanations why the exercise has been engulfed with such hindrances.

At a press conference held in Ho, the NDC’s National Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, said the party executives have toured several registration centres across the region mostly rural areas and they have observed the agonies people go through to get their cards.

Mr Ankrah said the NDC is not impressed with how the exercise is been organised. He alleged that some NIA officials have been exhibiting a lukewarm attitude and disrespect applicants especially the elderly.

“Considering the educational background and ages of some of our elders in this region we expected the registration officers selected for this process in our region to be trained on handling aged people with respect and dignity, however it rather appears the NIA officials who were deployed to our region have a PhD in disrespect, rudeness, arrogance and foul language, ” he stressed.

He said technical challenges and poor human behaviours by NIA official have discouraged Voltarians from participating in the registration.

The former Minister for Youth and Sports subsequently called on the NIA to come out with measures that will enable eligible applicants to go through the processes without challenges adding “we believe a lot of Ghanaians may have serious difficulties in acquiring the Ghana card considering how the process has been conducted, and therefore we as a party will resist any attempt by the Electoral Commission to make this card a requirement for voter registration or for the voting itself”.

Meanwhile, the exercise is expected to end on 14 August within Volta and expected to continue in the Oti region in the third week of August.

  • Remain calm – Child Rights International appeals to Ghanaians after discovery of skeletons

Child Rights International (CRI), a child-centred organisation, has called on Ghanaians, especially the families of the three abducted Takoradi girls, to remain calm as they wait for the police to carry out forensic and DNA tests to determine the identities of the human remains discovered in a cesspit.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.

It determines the particular structure and functions of every cell and is responsible for characteristics being passed on from parents to their children. This is how its analysis helps with authentic information that establishes incontrovertible blood relationships of persons.

    Broaden scope, involve families

The organisation has also called on the police not to rely mainly on the discovered human remains to cut down their investigations concerning the whereabouts of the missing girls.

A statement signed and issued by the Executive Director of CRI, Mr Bright Appiah, said: “Now is the time for the police to open their tentacles wide and engage the relevant bodies to ascertain the identities of the human remains believed to be those of the missing girls.”

It recommended that the police should not sideline or ignore the participation of the families of the missing girls in their investigations.

  • Parliament goes on recess

Members of Parliament (MPs) went on recess last Friday night after 42 sittings in the Second Meeting of the Third Session of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, who was in the chair for the closing ceremony adjourned the House sine die, thus with no appointed date for resumption.

The MPs are expected to be on break for about three months.

    Tasks performed

Twelve Bill’s were passed into law during the meeting, including the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill to deal with political vigilantism and the menace of land guards.

The Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was also passed into law. It amended the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) to increase the penalties for a person who buys or sells minerals without a licence or without a valid authority and increased the penalties for a person who engages in illegal mining.

With the amendment, the penalty regime for offences for persons who engage in illegal mining operations has been increased from the existing 3,000 penalty units to 10,000 penalty units.

The implication is that the minimum term of imprisonment has been pegged at a minimum of 15 years and not more than 20 years.

During the Meeting, the House also approved the supplementary estimates of GH¢6,370,355,925. Members of Parliament also approved loans and commercial credit agreements between the government and some countries and institutions.

Parliament also approved USD$11,040,425 million loan request for the purchase of Night Vision Binoculars and Monoculars for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The amount is a down payment to the supplier, FInanciere DUC, Luxembourg, after a contract was signed with the Government of Ghana.

The report of the Finance Committee of Parliament indicated that the equipment and accessories would be used by the military to defend the territorial waters of Ghana.

    Closing remarks

In his closing remark, the Majority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, praised MPs for working to pass many bills into law.

According to him, no Parliament in the Fourth Republic had passed as many laws as the Seventh Parliament.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu urged his colleague legislators to increase their engagements with the public on important issues to improve appreciation of the issues.

He wished the National Democratic Congress (NDC) well in its forthcoming primaries.

In his remarks, the Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, appealed to the Minister for the Interior and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take steps to deal with growing insecurity in the country.

Mr Iddrisu called for a full scale independent enquiry into the PDS concession saga by the judiciary.

That, he said, was crucial because the House went ahead to approve the agreement despite calls by the Minority for the government to do due diligence before the approval.

Mr Osei-Owusu thanked the leadership of Parliament, MPs, clerks and all staff of Parliament for their support and cooperation towards the work of the House.

According to him, if they are not alive they will know what to do.

Mr Francis Bentum is the father of Priscilla Blessing Bentum who was first kidnapped on August 17th 2018.

His comment follows an operation carried out by a team of police personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra and Western Regional Police Command in an uncompleted building at Kansawrodo near the Methodist Senior High School girls hotel on Friday, August 2, 2019, where the first accused Samuel Wills was living.

During the operation, the police retrieved some remains suspected to be human parts from a septic tank close to the house.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, August 3, 2019, Mr Francis Bentum accused the police of not collaborating with them to know what was happening.

He, therefore, said he doesn’t believe that the skeletons found in the uncompleted building at Kansawrodo were their children.

Mr Bentum, seized the opportunity to urge all Ghanaians not to believe the story circulating that the skeletons were their children.

He quizzed that how could their children who were reported by the CID that they were in Nigeria be found at Kansawrodo.

“… They are not our children. It is a planned thing the guy (Samuel Wills) does to deceive people because we were told that our children were in Nigeria so how can their bodies be found here”, he opined.

The worried father is, therefore, urging Government to allow them (parents) to ask the suspect three questions and if he could answer, they leave everything to God.

“…If it will not disturb Government, they should allow us to ask him three questions and we will know the truth. Government should allow us to ask him if our children are alive or not so that we will know what to do because he can’t deceive us always”, he said.

He affirmed that “I don’t believe the skeletons found are our children”.

He concluded that “My wife is suffering because of this issue”.

  • Youth cautioned against posters on job opportunities overseas

The youth have been urged to approach with suspicion, letters and posters that promise lucrative job offers abroad.

This is because many young people end up embarking on hazardous journeys, which often end up in their dreams being shattered, and even death, upon being misled on account of job offers.

Mr. Kojo Wilmot, National Project Officer, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), said this at a two-day Advocacy and Sensitization Campaign, on Free Movement and Migration within the ECOWAS region.

He said one thing the youth needed to realise, was that it was not possible to be assured by some letter posted on a wall that a lucrative job was awaiting overseas.

Mr. Wilmot urged people to find out travel information from credible sources, so they did not end up falling into any danger that could have been avoided.

“Please call the IOM on 0302742930 if you need credible information concerning your intention to travel,” he said.

Dr. Tony Luker Elumelu, ECOWAS Directorate of Free Movement, urged young people to unleash their entrepreneurial skills, instead of always waiting to be employed.

He said enough opportunities existed in West Africa for aspiring youth within the sub-region, to succeed in their various enterprises.

Dr. Elumelu urged the youth to take advantage of protocols on free movement within the sub-region, and make use of the several opportunities that could be found.

He observed that free movement promoted the transfer of skills, as well as skill-sharing, which were most needed for the overall growth of the sub-region.

Mr. Yakubu Seidu, Deputy Commissioner of Customs, in Charge of Prevention, cautioned that criminals who sought to take advantage of ECOWAS Protocols on free movement to commit crime should be reported whenever it was possible.

He said some people for instance, would smuggle a vehicle from one West African country into another, change its registration plate, and sell it off.

“Whenever you are going to buy a car, please check with Customs as much as possible, because if you are found to have violated the law, you will be made to pay accordingly,” Mr. Seidu warned.

He also said it was important for people escaping justice in their countries who were seeking refuge in other countries within the sub-region, to be reported to the authorities when found out.

Mr. Seidu said it was the responsibility of the citizenry within the Sub-region, to contribute their quota towards the integration process.

The Campaign is a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the ECOWAS Commission, and the International Organisation for Migration.

  • Takoradi missing girls: 7 facts gathered about the discovery of the bodies

The discovery of human body parts believed to be those of the three Takoradi missing girls has dominated headlines since the news broke on Friday, August 2, 2019.

The sighting and exhumation of these bodies follow months of waiting by the girls’ families and Ghanaians in general for their safe return.

Since the news came up on Friday night, there have been a lot of varying reports and angles to the matter and makes it difficult for one to follow.

YEN.com.gh has put together a list of the facts that have been made public since the bodies were found. This should make it easier for one to understand.

    1. Players in the operation:

According to the official police statement, the operation to retrieve the human parts was undertaken by the National Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Western regional police command.

    2. Where the bodies were retrieved from:

As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh the human parts were retrieved from a septic tank at a house located at Kansawurodo, a suburb of Takoradi.

The said house was the same place was where the main suspect in the kidnapping case, Samuel Udeotuk-Wills, lived before his arrest. He is said to have led the officers to the location.

    3. How the bodies were retrieved:

Police officers were dispatched from Accra following a tip and with the help of Western regional police commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Vincent Redeemer, and others they reached the house around 5pm and cordoned off the area.

After entering the room of the suspect, sniffer dogs brought for the operation led the team to the septic tank and they began to empty the full tank at 5:30pm.

After almost three hours, the officers found skeletons suspected to be that of the missing girls which were packed into cartons and taken away from the scene.

    4. What happens to the remains:

According to the police the remains have been brought to Accra and they would undergo DNA tests at the Police Forensic Laboratory.

This will help determine which of the parts belong together and even establish whether skeletons were that of the three missing girls.

    5. Suspect’s reaction:

According to a report YEN.com.gh sighted on Graphic.com.gh, the suspect, Samuel Udeotuk-Wills, who led the team to the location was made to watch the whole retrieval process at close range.

But he denied any knowledge he still denied any involvement in the murder of the girls, the report said.

    6. Reaction of girls’ families:

YEN.com.gh gathers that just after news went around town that police officers had retrieved some bodies from the septic tank, the families headed to the location but found the absence of the team which had left for Accra.

Some are said picked cars to come to Accra. In an official reaction, the families have asked for independent forensic verification of the identities of the human parts found.

According to the spokesperson for the families, Mr Michael Hayford Acquah, “until forensic and DNA investigations establish that the body parts found to be that of theirs, all we know is that our loved ones are still alive.”

    7. The kidnappings themselves:

As widely reported, the three girls were all kidnapped around the Takoradi metropolis within a space of four months.

Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21, a third-year student of the University of Education, Winneba, was kidnapped at Kansawurodo on August 17, 2018. She was followed almost four months later by

Ruth Love Quayson, 18, a senior high school (SHS) graduate, who got abducted at Butumegyabu Junction on December 4, 2018.

A little over two weeks after the second kidnapping, Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie, 15, a student of Sekondi College (SEKCO), was also kidnapped near the Nkroful Junction in Takoradi on December 21, 2018.

Update on Takoradi Girls by The Independent Ghana on Scribd

According to Graphic Online’s reporter in Takoradi, Dotsey Koblah Akorbortu, the family members of the missing girls who got wind of the operation moved swiftly to the scene and subsequently moved to Accra when they heard the police were on their way to Accra with the skeletons.

The family members have since called for an independent forensic investigation to establish whether the skeletons found were indeed that of the missing girls.

Police confirm finding human remains behind Takoradi girls accused person’s house

In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ms Juliana Obeng, on Friday night, the police said “the discovered human remains would be sent to the forensic science laboratory of the Ghana police service for analysis and further investigation.”

“As part of investigations into the three (3) Takoradi kidnapped girls, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Western Regional Command earlier this evening August 2, 2019, conducted an operation at Kansaworodo, a suburb of Takoradi,” the police statement said.

“During the operation which took place at about 7 pm, some human remains were retrieved from a septic tank at an uncompleted building. The building was previously occupied by convict Samuel Udeotuk-Wills who is one of the accused persons standing trial for allegedly kidnapping the three (3) Takoradi girls,” the police statement added.

Interior Minister on missing Takoradi girls

The Minister of the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, last Tuesday [July 31, 2019] told Parliament that the security agencies were still investigating the missing of the three girls and were hopeful of rescuing them, reports Graphic Online’s Parliamentary correspondent, Musah Yahaya Jafaru.

Mr Dery said the government would not relent in its effort to trail the accused persons and other suspects to rescue the girls and send them back to their parents.

Mr Dery was answering an urgent question by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa North, Mr James Agalga, on measures the government intends to institute to deal with incidents of kidnapping of young women in the Western Region and other parts of the country.

Mr Dery said one person was arrested in connection with the case in Ghana and another person also arrested in Togo.

He said the police were following the case but indicated that he would not give details of the investigations.

He said the government was in constant touch with the parents of the missing children to give them updates on the investigation.

Mr Dery debunked the claim that cases of kidnappings were on the ascendency and indicated that in the previous regime Ghanaians were not given updates on the situation.

He said the 77 and 76 cases recorded in previous years, 47 cases of kidnappings were reported this year [2019], and indicated that 21 of the cases were proved to be false and 17 rescued.

He said the government would not relent until all the missing children were rescued.

    The case

Between August and December 2018, three cases of alleged kidnapping were reported in the Western Region and the victims are yet to be found.

In all the three cases, the police established that the alleged kidnapper [Samuel Udeotuk-Wils] struck acquaintances with the victims for some time before moving into action.

The police said the kidnapper contacted the victims several times through the mobile phone.

He promised the first and the second victims jobs, while he promised the third victim a mobile phone.

The first victim, Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21, was kidnapped at Kansaworodo on August 17, 2018; while the second victim, Ruth Love Quayson, 18, was kidnapped at the Butumegyabu Junction, popularly known as the BU Junction in Takoradi, on December 4, last year, with the third, Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie,15, a first-year student of the Sekondi College (SEKCO) who resided at West Fijai with her parents, she went missing at a location near the Nkroful Junction on December 4, last year.

A day after the third victim went missing, the police, through intensive investigations, arrested Samuel Udoetuk Wills, a 28-year-old Nigerian national, from his hideout on the outskirts of Kansaworodo.

He has since been in custody after making some appearances in court.

Speaking to a gathering at Bawdie-Dompim in the Amenfi West District recently as part of his tour of the Western Region, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the government was not sleeping over the missing Takoradi girls.

He assured the affected families and the nation that everything would be done to rescue them, and indicated that the security agencies were working with all seriousness, albeit on the quiet, and expressed optimism that the efforts would pay off.

“We are not sleeping on the three missing young women. It is important to note that those involved are wicked and crafty people and the team is working to rescue them,” the President said.

  • Chinese kicking us out of business – Fashion entrepreneur

Chief Executive Officer of one of Ghana’s foremost fashion hubs, Akaal Dekor, Hawah Braimah, has bemoaned the growing trend of Chinese fashion businesses giving their Ghanaian counterparts a good run for their money.

Ms. Braimah, who doubles as the Principal of Akaal Fashion College at Kwamo in the Ashanti region blamed this development on the Chinese offering their products and services at prices far lower than those from Ghanaians.

The multiple award-winning business woman was, however, quick to add that should the Chinese leave the business, their Ghanaian counterparts may not be able to meet the market demands so the government should support the indigenous businesses structurally and financially to meet their production targets for the local and international markets.

Akaal Dekor has, over 20 years, contributed immensely to the Ghanaian fashion industry which has been a backbone of the creative sector.

The company’s high standards have attracted the internationally acclaimed Divas in the United States of America to severally send its officials to Ghana.

The recent feat was Akaal Dekor collections catching the unprecedented attention of His Royal Highness Prince Charles of Wales at the new Kejetia Market in Kumasi during his visit to the country.

  • Cabinet approves proposals for academic user fees

Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Education, has announced that Cabinet has approved proposals for a review of academic user fees of students.

He said this was done last month and have been forwarded to Parliament for ratification.

Dr Prempeh said this in a speech read on his behalf at the 11th Congregation of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa.

“I am aware of concerns within the university community on the matter of academic user fees, which have not been increased for three years. I wish to state that, this has primarily been due to the new procedure for approval of these fees by Parliament” he explained.

On the issue of clearance for some universities to replace staff, he said the Ministry of Finance was working on its backlog with urgency and that would be fully resolved before the end of August 2019.

The Government appreciates and understands the need for some staff beyond the age of 65 to be retained, especially for the depth of their experience and ability to continue to enrich faculty, Dr Prempeh explained.

He said there were constitutional implications of maintaining such staff on the government payroll and rather, they should be paid from Internally Generated Fund.

“Government accepts the position that there should have being a constitutional amendment to increase the age of retirement to bring such faculty members within the constitutional framework, and Parliament is in the process of considering same,” he said.

The Minister pointed out that the government was aware that one of the implications of its Free Senior High School policy was an increase in the number of students seeking university admission come 2020/21 academic year when the first cohort of students under the programme complete their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He stated that under a $500 million infrastructure upgrade through the GETFund securitisation, universities like UMaT would receive favourable consideration.

This, he said, was primarily because UMaT had remained focused on its core mandate in respect of the nature of programmes it run and the government believes this was important in developing and nurturing talents in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

He congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jerry Kuma for his passion in ensuring the UMaT continued to employ the best standards in the training of their students.

  • Were not surprised by suspension of PDS concession PUWU

General Secretary of the Public Utility Worker Union (PUWU), Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi has said the union was not surprised at the suspension of the Power Distribution Services concession agreement.

According to him, various stakeholders failed to do due diligence before PDS took over from ECG.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday he said the union was certain PDS was bound to be implicated soon or later.

“For us, it also came as a surprise because we least expected it, but on the other hand we were not very surprised because looking at the way this whole transaction was carried out through, some of us were very certain along the line that some of these developments could come up. So it is not very strange that we are hearing some of these things,” he said.

According to him the Millennium Development Authority( MiDA) completely overlooked concerns raised by the union and ECG.

“If MiDA had at least listened to some of the key issues that were raised by both the union and ECG at the time, they would have tread a little cautiously and would not have rushed this deal through the manner they did,” he said.

The Minister for Energy John Peter Amewu has said investigations conducted by the government has established that a document that was presented by Power Distribution Service (PDS) as a guarantee for the takeover of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was forged.

The Minister explained that even though the document indicated that a company in Qatar has guaranteed for PDS, the management of the company told the government it had no knowledge of the document

PDS officially took over from ECG in February 2019 after winning the bid to run the power distribution service.

The company was expected to turnaround the operations of ECG to make it profitable.

  • Health Minister stopped, driver arrested for road traffic violation

The Driver of the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu has been arrested and processed for the City Campus Court for using a strobe light to drive against oncoming traffic.

Mr. Agyeman Manu was in the Nissan Patrol with a police officer when his driver was arrested.

Ministers of state can drive against oncoming traffic only when they are accompanied by a dispatch rider, which they are entitled to.

But it is still an offence for a Minister of State or his driver to use strobe lights.

Regulation 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012, (LI 2180) limits the use of sirens and special warning devices to a few categories but some motorists have still fitted them on their vehicles to manoeuvre around heavy traffic.

Only government vehicle used for official purposes by the Head of State, police vehicles, Fire Service vehicles, ambulances, bullion vehicles or motor vehicle used by other recognized government security agencies can be fitted with strobe lights.

The War Against Indiscipline was started by Citi TV in May 2019 and since the police stepped in to partner the station, the campaign has been able to name, shame and punish persons who break road traffic regulations.

Offenders have been found driving on the shoulder of roads, driving against traffic, recklessly overtaking among others.

High profile arrests have seen the Tarkwa Nsuaem MP, George Mireku Duker and the Kade MP, Kwabena Ohemeng Tinyaase were caught in vehicles that broke road traffic regulations.

As of July 17, Citi TVs collaboration with the Ghana Police Service had accumulated GH¢258,000 in fines for the state.
