  • Family petitions Ghana’s IGP over phone repairer’s death

The family of the late Kofi Poku, also known as ‘Asco Pee’, the 35-year old phone repairer who died on Sunday, July 07, 2019, after he was allegedly manhandled By the Old Tafo police, is calling for justice.

“We are appealing to the Inspector General of Police ( IGP) to use his good offices to intervene in the issue since the family is suspicious of police complicity in the unfortunate death,” Nana Akua, the grief-stricken mother of the deceased, told newsmen.

According to the mother of the deceased, they had information that the late Poku was allegedly subjected to severe beatings by the police soon after his arrest for reckless driving, which subsequently, led to his death at the Tafo Government Hospital.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Old Tafo Mile Three family residence of the deceased on Monday, the tension was brewing as the youth, family and relatives of the deceased, clad in red and black, had sworn not to rest until the right thing was done.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyo, in-charge of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Unit, confirming the incident, said the Command had commenced preliminary investigations into the issue.

“Our information indicates that the deceased who was in charge of a Toyota Saloon car, on reaching Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi, ignored police signals to stop as he was driving recklessly,” he stated.

This, he noted, aroused the suspicion of the police and as a result, a patrol team pursued the speeding driver and caught up with him at a spot close to the Tafo Government Hospital Junction.

ASP Ahianyo added that sensing danger, the deceased driver was said to have jumped out of his car in an attempt to run away, and allegedly fell down heavily, becoming weak in the process.

“When our men found out that he had almost fallen unconscious, they then rushed him to the hospital,” he noted.

Meanwhile, five people who were said to be part of some demonstrators who took to the streets and proceeded to the Hospital to pour out their anger, following the incident had been arrested by the police.

The culprits, who at the time of filing this report were still in police custody, are assisting with investigations.

  • Group sues GLC over law entrance exam ad

A suit has been filed at the Registry of the High Court, Accra, seeking to force the General Legal Council, the body charged with legal education in Ghana, to withdraw an advertisement it placed in the state-owned Daily Graphic of 4 June 2019, in which it asked prospective applicants to submit applications to it to undergo a law school entrance examination.

    The suit is titled GJ1547/2019.

On 10 June 2019, the Coalition for the Reformation of Legal Education in Ghana issued a press statement asking that the advertisement issued on 4 June 2019 be withdrawn.

In that letter, the group stated: “To conclude, we are by this letter serving notice on the General Legal Council, and notice is hereby served, that if it fails to publicly withdraw the advertisement placed on page 30 of the Daily Graphic of 4 June 2019, we would initiate all legal actions allowed by the 1992 Constitution to ensure that they listen to the voice of reason.”

Copies of the letter were subsequently served on the General Legal Council and several interest groups.

“Unfortunately, we have not seen the required action, leaving us with no option to seek judicial intervention”, the coalition said in a statement.

    In the suit, which is an application for Judicial Review by way of Prohibition, the Applicant is seeking three reliefs, which are the following;

    (1) An order of Prohibition directed at the Respondents to withdraw the advertisement placed at page 30 of the Daily Graphic of 4 June 2019, and to make the contents of the said advertisement consistent with articles 23 and 296 (a) and (b) and the Legal Profession (Professional and Post-Call Law Course) Regulations, 2018 (L.I.2355).

    (2) An order of Prohibition directed at the Respondents to withdraw the advertisement placed at page 30 of the Daily Graphic of 4 June 2019, and make the contents of the said advertisement consistent with articles 17 of the 1992 Constitution.

    (3) An order of Prohibition to directed at the Respondents to withdraw the advertisement placed at page 30 of the Daily Graphic of 4 June 2019, and make the contents of the said advertisement consistent with article 15 of the 1992 Constitution.

“The reasons are that even though the General Legal Council has been sued in the Supreme Court on the very same matters, it has not seen it fit to file an appearance in the matter before the Supreme Court to provide a response in that suit. What it has rather done, is to proceed by doing exactly the same things that has landed it in the Supreme Court”, the group noted.

  • Parliamentary Chamber: Leadership must apologise to Ghanaians – Kokofu

Former Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, Henry Kwabena Kokofu has asked the leadership of parliament to apologize to Ghanaians over their decision to build a 450-seater new parliamentary chamber.

According to him, they have done a lot of disservice to the people of Ghana for prioritizing their interest over the interest of the majority Ghanaians who voted the NPP into power.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, he explained that the NPP government led by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo owes it a duty to honour his promises to the people of Ghana as the 200 million US dollar project is not a priority.

“The NPP government is committed to providing basic amenities and social infrastructure for the people of Ghana and we will not lose focus on that.”

“I believe that Parliament should be focused on helping the President achieve his basic aim and goal rather than doing things to suit their whims and caprices,” he added.

  • Horticulture sector actors need constant dialogue – Mr Tooren

Mr Anjo Van Toorn, the Country Director of the Netherlands Development Organisation, has called on horticulture sector actors to constantly dialogue to market their products and services.

He said new dimensions of scaling up, innovation, and partnerships were been triggered to take the sector to the next level.

Mr Tooren was speaking at the HortiFresh Business Platform Meeting, which coincided with the launch of the 2019 Horticulture Business Opportunities in Ghana Report and the “HortiFresh Awards” in Accra.

The HortiFresh Business Platform Meeting is an event organised quarterly to bring together key service providers, producers, processors, traders, wholesalers and retailers in the fruit and vegetable sector in Ghana.

On the other hand, the report presents the state of the art of the horticulture sector in Ghana and lvory Coast.

He said the reports were part of their gift to the sector and this was the third in the series counting from the first in 2014, then 2016 and now 2019.

He said the report highlights gaps in the sector in Ghana, which could easily be turned into profit making venture to develop the industry.

The Country Director said HortiFresh, through their Platform Meeting, would continue to serve as a pedestal to create visibility for business enterprises and create more linkages for growth for local entrepreneurs to thrive.

Mr Tooren said the HortiFresh programme aimed to develop “sustainable and internationally competitive fruit and vegetable sector that contributes to inclusive economic growth, as well as food and nutrition security”.

He said as they partner the public sector to enhance the conducive business climate for entrepreneurs to be dynamic, the latter on the other hand were encouraged to actively take leaps towards being competitive in both the domestic setting and the global horticulture space.

“Ghana is moving away from a traditional and relationship, to one of long-term trade, presenting avenues for private sector to thrive,” he added.

Mr Joep van den Broek, the Vegetable Advisor, HortiFresh Programme, said the report analysed opportunities in the fruit sector, vegetable sector, competitiveness of the vegetable sector, access to finance, roadmap for pest reduction in fruit and vegetable exports in Ghana.

It also looks at pesticide choice and use for vegetable production and Onion variety trials.

On access to finance, he said in 2019 and 2020, HortiFresh was looking to upscale its exporter-outgrower financial product to benefit a lot more companies in the sector.

He said to this end, HortiFresh was partnering with financial institutions both in Ghana and outside to provide various financing solutions.

“Interesting companies seeking to move to their next level of growth can contact the team at HortiFresh for further information,” he added.

In the area of pest reduction in fruit and vegetable exports, the Advisor said the report recommends that exporters and their out-growers have to strictly follow these pest reduction protocols in the field and packhouse to ensure commodities for exports were free from pest, especially those of quarantine importance.

He said the Onion variety trial was to evaluate the growth and yield of six hybrid onion varieties and two local controls in the three zones of the country.

He said the report recommends that seeds should be stored in a cool place preferably in a refrigerator to ensure that they remained viable over a reasonable period of time.

Mr Broek said per the conclusions, the potential for Onion production in Ghana was quiet high provided supplementary irrigation could be provided when necessary and adequate pest and disease control were put in place.

He said the six hybrid varieties produced higher yields than the local checks, Bawku Red and Reds Creole, however, storage may be better in the local checks than most of the hybrids.

The winners for the HortiFresh awards were: A.B Farms Best Vegetable Booth; Famklass- Most Innovative Product and Services; Hendy- Best Packaged Product; Ropryn-Best Fruit Booth and the Agritop-the Overall Best Booth.

  • Fish processors, traders urged to adopt scientific preservation methods

Mr Francis Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has urged fish processors and traders to adopt scientific fish processing and preservation methods to ensure safety.

The current fish smoking and drying processes safety limitations including the contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is a known public health hazard.

Mr Cudjoe said this at the launching of a fish processors and traders certification programme in Accra organised by the USAID funded Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP).

The occasion was used to present certificate and labels to 13 out of 32 fish processors and processing farms who signed up for certification.

The certification initiative dubbed “Class One Recognition Scheme” is aimed at ensuring that fish processors and traders adopted internationally accepted requirements for safe and hygienic handling and processing of fish.

It is also to improve market access and income of fishers, serve as guidelines for the regulation and production of safe and healthy smoked fish as well as serve as a monitoring tool for compliance.

Mr Cudjoe said the poor product quality and unhygienic handling practices were a major concern in the local fish processing industry.

He further noted that the illegal use of chemicals and explosives in fishing were a major contributor to poor quality fish catch and a cause of microbiological contamination that occurred through the value-chain, as well as the processing and storage stages.

Mr Samuel Manu, Post-Harvest Unit of the Ministry, giving an overview of the scheme, said it was the first of three proposed levels of the implementation of hygienic standards in the sector.

He said the ministry designed it, in collaboration With the Food and Drugs Authority, Food Research Institute, Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), some Public Universities, Civil Society Organisations in the sector, and others with support from the USAID SFMP.

Mr Manu said the certificates were to be renewed annually by the processors after an audit at the cost of GHC 100, which included the printing of the certificates and 500 copies of healthy fish labels.

He said the certificate could be withdrawn if there was cause to believe that the fish was exposed to risk of contamination or a misuse of the label, such as counterfeit, transfer or alteration.

Mr Steven E. Hendrix, Deputy Mission Director of USAlD-Ghana, commended the Ministry for taking steps to improve fish processing in the country.

Mr Hendrix, noted that “ensuring that processors can work in a clean, hygienic environment and encouraging the use of the Ahotor ovens that reduce harmful smoke emissions will greatly benefit the health of these women, their families, and their communities.”

He said fish processing steps are often done in the same physical area, which increases the risks of cross-contamination between freshly delivered raw fish and finished products.

  • UN official says its important to coordinate African initiatives with BRI to spur infrastructure dev’t

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Sunday reiterated the importance of coordinating continental initiatives with the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to spur infrastructure development across Africa.

She noted the UN’ commitment to “working with African institutions to mobilize the resources that will be required for the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement, which officially went into operation here on Sunday, Mohammed also emphasized the need to invest in the infrastructure sector if the continent was to realize the full potential of the AfCFTA.

She stressed the potential of BRI in advancing infrastructure development and regional integration across Africa.

“We will be working with you to coordinate and leverage complementary funding sources, from the African Development Bank’s Africa50 Fund to the African Union’s Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative,” Mohammed told African leaders at the opening session of the 12th Extraordinary Summit of the AU Heads of State and Government in Niamey, capital of Niger.

The continental free trade pact “will create jobs and contribute to technology transfer and the development of new skills; it will improve productive capacity and diversification, and it will increase African and foreign investment,” she said.

The AfCFTA “will bring the promise of trade-led economic growth closer to reality for Africa’s entrepreneurs, industrialists, investors, innovators and service suppliers,” Mohammed said.

The pact is “a tool to unleash African innovation, drive growth, transform African economies and contribute to a prosperous, stable and peaceful African continent, as foreseen in both Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” she said.

The African free trade accord was launched on March 21 last year in Kigali, capital of Rwanda.

On Sunday, the AfCFTA’s operational phase was officially launched at the extraordinary AU summit. It came into force on May 30, after the deposit of the required minimum of 22 instruments of ratification by AU member-states to the AU Commission.

Five more instruments of ratification have since been deposited, including Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, which deposited their respective instruments on Sunday, bringing the total number of countries that have deposited their AfCFTA ratification to the AU Commission to 27.

  • African leaders officially launch operational phase of AfCFTA

African leaders on Sunday officially launched the operational phase of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement in Niamey.

The launch occurred at the 12th Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Niamey, capital of Niger.

Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, hailed the launch of the free trade pact as a “historic moment” in Africa’s history, especially toward the realization of the 50-year African development Agenda 2063.

    “New Era In Africa’s Integration”

“The speedy entry into force of the AfCFTA has been a major pride to all of us,” Faki said.

“Niamey marks the history of a new era in Africa’s integration.”

“More than just a free trade area, the AfCFTA is by excellence the instrument for industrialization and integration with an objective of the aspirations of the Agenda 2063,” the head of the 55-member pan-African bloc said.

The African free trade accord was launched on March 21 last year in Kigali, capital of Rwanda.

It came into force on May 30, after the deposit of the required minimum of 22 instruments of ratification by AU member-states to the AU Commission.

Five more instruments of ratification have since been deposited, including Gabon and the Equatorial Guinea, which deposited theirs on Sunday, bringing the total number of countries that have deposited their AfCFTA ratification to the AU Commission to 27.

Egyptian Minister of Magic Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is also the current chairperson of the AU, hailed Sunday as a remarkable moment in Africa’s quest toward improved trade and integration.

    “Momentous Moment”

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed also stressed that the start of the operational phase of the continental free trade pact is “a momentous moment.”

She urged the African countries to effectively harness the potential of the free trade pact.

The AfCFTA, which was launched on March 21 last year in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, also on Sunday added Nigeria, Africa’s most populous and largest economy, and Benin to its growing list of signatories, leaving Eritrea as the only member of the African Union that has not signed onto the historic accord.

Nigerian Minister of Magic Muhammadu Buhari and Benin’s Minister of Magic Patrice Talon signed the agreement, making the two countries as the 53rd and 54th signatories, respectively.

The AfCFTA, among its major aspirations, calls for a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business persons and investment, paving way faster establishment of a customs union.

Once fully operational, the free trade accord is projected to boost the level of intra-Africa trade by more than 52 percent by the year 2022, according to the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

According to the AU, the AfCFTA “has laid the foundation” for what could be the world’s largest free trade zone by the number of participating countries, covering more than 1.2 billion people with a combined gross domestic product of 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars.

  • Egypt sack coach Javier Aguirre after shock AFCON defeat to South Africa

Javier Aguirre was sacked as the coach of Egypt early on Sunday morning just two hours after the Pharaohs were booted out of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by underdogs South Africa.

The Mexican was fired from his Pharaohs post with three years left on his contract after the host country crashed out of Africa’s flagship sporting event.

The massive footballing earthquake hit the host nation when Bafana Bafana struck late in the Round of 16 game in Cairo on Saturday to throw home crowd into a state of mourning.

The 85th minute winner from Thembinkosi Lorch was enough to secure the shock victory and send the entire system of Egyptian football into collapse.

Hani Abou Rida, the President of the Egyptian FA, and his board announced their decision to sack the Mexican coach and his entire backroom staff before falling on their own swords.

Aguirre had scheduled a meeting with the leadership of the Egyptian FA on Sunday to discuss his future after accepting full responsibility for the defeat but he was booted out before the meeting could take place.

“I am proud of the group of players that I selected. In the first three games, they were good,” the former Mexico national team coach said after the match in Cairo.

“I will not talk about the players outside of the squad. I am proud of the ones that I called-up.

“There is no decision made about my future. I spoke with the players and on Sunday I will meet with the EFA to discuss my future.

“I am the only one responsible for the defeat. We are all upset about the early elimination and I bear all the consequences because I chose the players and the formation,” he added.

Aguirre took of the Pharaohs in August 2018 and played 12 matches in all competitions, winning nine games, drawing one, while losing only twice.

The national team scored 25 goals under his charge while conceding seven.

His contract which saw him earn a monthly salary of $120,000 was supposed to run until the 2022 World Cup, but a disastrous AFCON campaign saw him depart early.

  • Egypt FA on the verge of collapse, resignations rock federation over AFCON defeat

The Egypt Football Association (EFA) is on the verge of collapse after several board member resignations rocked the country’s governing body, following in the footsteps the President of the federation in the wake of their shock defeat to underdogs South Africa at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

With four board members resigning along with the President of the federation, just one more resignation means the 11-member EFA board cannot form a quorum which will automatically make it defunct, according to its constitution.

Executive Director of the EFA, Tharwat Sweilem, will then take charge as interim President of the federation for the next three months before elections are held, insiders have said.

Hani Abou Rida resigned as the EFA President on Saturday night and called on the members of the board of directors to submit their resignations after the host country was knocked out in the Round of 16.

Four board members responded to the demands of their leader and Hazem Imam, Saif Zaher, Ahmed Mujahid and Khalid Latif announced their official resignations.

Karam Karam, Issam Abdel Fattah and Majdi Abdel Ghani, declined to resign.

With the trio of Karam, Abdel Fattah and Abdel Ghani retreating, the quorum of the governing body of the Football Federation remains intact, with only five members resigning and six remaining.

However the status of the trio of Ahmed Shubair, vice president of the federation, Dina Rifai and Mohammed Abu Al-Wafa will be known later on Sunday and if just one of them joins the resignation boat, the EFA board collapses.

The constitution of the EFA stipulates that in the case of the resignation of the Board of Directors or a number of its members, which leads to the loss of quorum, the board becomes dissolved.

The EFA loses its legal status and becomes defunct in the case of the resignation of half of its members, which has not happened so far with the resignation of four members and the president only, out of 11 members.

The Regulation also provides that the Executive Director of the EFA, Tharwat Sweilem, will manage the affairs of the Federation as its interim President for a period of three months before elections are held for the governing council.

Abou Rida, who is a member of the FIFA Council and CAF Executive Committee, revealed that he will continue to chair the Local Organising Committee of the tournament until it ends on 19 July.

The respected administrator threw in the towel two hours after the host country was shockingly eliminated by underdogs in Cairo on Saturday night despite the massive home support.

The Pharaohs were bundled out of the tournament at the Round of 16 after suffering the surprising 1-0 defeat to the confident Bafana Bafana who now book their place in the quarter-finals with the late winner in Cairo.

With Egypt throwing players forward, Thembinkosi Lorch struck on the counter-attack after 85 minutes leading to the disaster for the home side.

South Africa knocked hosts Egypt out of the tournament and booked their place in the quarter-finals with a late winner in Cairo when Thembinkosi Lorch struck on the counter-attack after 85 minutes.

Mr Ocloo Mawuli Egos, the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), told the Ghana News Agency that vegetable, cereal and cassava farms were underwater in three communities around Ayitikope.

  • Listen to your parents no matter their educational level

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli State and President of the National House of Chiefs, has advised young people to remain obedient to their parents irrespective of their academic achievements.

He said educated children tend to regard themselves more intelligent than their parents, and said such tendencies would deny them good counsel.

Togbe Afede said this in a tribute to his mother, Madam Rosalia Akuyo Anyawo at her burial mass held in Ho on Saturday.

“Young people must listen to their parents. It is easy for the young to think their education has made them wiser than their parents. I wish that I had listened to her more, and understood and taken more seriously some of the things she said. I would have been a much better person”, he said.

Togbe Afede said his mother, though uneducated, strove to keep his schooling on course, and was a major source of encouragement as he climbed up the academic and business ladder.

He was thankful for picking virtues such as honesty, truthfulness, empathy and long-suffering from his late mother, whom he described as a successful palm wine seller.

“My mother taught us the importance of hard work and taught us to be resolutely committed to our goals. We were inspired by how she juggled her duties daily. Dada also taught us to be honest, so we would truly earn, with pride, whatever benefits we receive”, Togbe Afede said.

Akuyo Anyawo, the mother of four, who lived from 1932 to 2018, headed the Palm Wine Sellers Association in the Volta Region, whiles venturing into farming and other endeavours.

  • Prospective voters appeal for registration extension

rospective voters awaiting in long queues to be registered in the Sunyani Municipality on Friday appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the duration of the on-going Limited Voter Registration Exercise.

According to them the number of would-be voters wishing to be registered have increased, though the exercise officially ends on Sunday, July 7, 2019.

They attributed that increment to the arrival of Senior High School students who have attained age 18 and now back home on vacation.

When the Ghana News Agency visited the Sunyani Municipal EC registration Centre at 1430 hours, there was a long-winding queue of many potential voters who appeared so frustrated because some of them had been there for three working days but had not gotten the chance to be registered.

In an interview with the GNA, MS Priscilla Osei, an apprentice hairdresser, said, “I have been here for three days and have still not been registered due to the huge number of people”.

She pleaded with the EC to extend the duration for the registration to afford any qualified voter the opportunity to be registered.

Mr Yaw Badu-Amaniampong, the Municipal Supervisor of EC, said there is the need for the Commission to extend the duration because of the increase in the number of those wishing to be registered.

He said initially the Centre could register a little over 200 people a day but since Monday, July 1, 2019, more than 350 people were registered daily.

Mr Badu-Amaniampong said the Centre could register that number daily because of the capacity and the competency of the team of registration officials.

He said the agents of the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress have been cooperating with them adding that the Centre did not have any challenge except the issue of increasing numbers.

  • Adopt modern teaching methods, teachers urged

Dr Hafiz Bin-Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, has advised Senior High School (SHS) teachers to adopt modern technology as the overriding tool for effective transfer of knowledge and skills to students.

He also called on students in second cycle schools in the Region to take advantage of internet facilities to develop their skills in order to keep abreast with current trends.

He said the way teaching and learning was done in the past, needs to be revisited by adopting technology as the best tool to impart knowledge to students.

Dr Bin-Salih said this in a speech read his behalf during Lassia Tuolu Senior High School 25th Anniversary Celebration which was organised under the theme: “25 years of developing resourceful and responsible citizens for nation building: the way forward”.

He said developing resourceful and responsible students involve the use of new strategies and the need to use the internet to search for useful information.

According to the Minister, government through the Get Fund has made provisions for the construction of various facilities in the school including an administration block, a 12- unit classroom block and fence wall.

He said many schools have complained to him about sexual harassment perpetrated by both teachers and students against girls but nothing of that sort was heard about in Lassia Tuolu SHS and commended the students and teachers for living decent lives.

Dr Bin-Salih was not happy that five districts in the region were without Directors while six SHSs were also without Headmasters adding that these are obstacles to quality education delivery.

He urged parents not to ignore the basic needs of their wards because government has introduced free education; adding that they should continue to support and even monitor their studies to ensure academic excellence.

He said Ghana Education Service (GES) was rolling out a Teacher Rationalization Policy to pave way for teachers who studied particular subjects to teach same subjects in their respective schools.

Teachers who spoke with the Ghana News Agency lauded the idea of adopting modern technology for teaching but said they were handicapped since teachers do not have access to computers and projectors. And this is beside the fact that many schools are yet to be connected to the national grid.

Mr Banongie Emmanuel, Headmaster of the School, enumerated various academic successes chalked out including National Mathematics and Science Quiz Competition and qualification of two students to participate in a French programme in Lome, the capital town of Togo.

As a result, Secretary of State Pompeo has ordered consular officers in Ghana to implement visa restrictions on certain categories of visa applicants.

“Without an appropriate response from Ghana, the scope of these sanctions may be expanded to a wider population. The sanctions will remain in place until the Secretary of Homeland Security notifies Secretary Pompeo that cooperation on removals has improved to an acceptable level.”

The Pakistani High Commissioner to Ghana, retired Major General Wagar Ahmad Kinggravi spoke about the cordial diplomatic relations between the two countries, stating his determination to further strengthen those ties.

He said Pakistan was committed to fostering its economic, social and political relations with Ghana.

“Our two great people are well familiar with each other’s system and ways of business and trade. We can share our experience in agriculture, education, medical, Information Technology, Engineering and military fields,” Maj. Gen Kingravi said.

With the advantage of English being a common language for communication in both states, the High Commissioner disclosed that Pakistan was eager to invite Ghanaians to take advantage of the conducive environment in textiles, cement and a whole range of agro-based industries.

“We would also like to participate in joint ventures in the field of fertilizer and oil/gas development,” he added.

The Pakistani envoy who also has concurrent accreditation to Gabon, Cameroon, Benin and Equatorial Guinea since 2018, commended President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, which he said had buttressed global acceptance of Ghana as one of the most stable democracies in Africa.

The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Philip Stadler, on his part was positive that the bond between Ghana and Switzerland that dated back many years would blossom into a more fruitful relationship.

He noted the excellent economic cooperation between the two countries since 2002, hoping that his stay in Ghana would contribute to the diversification and deepening of trade and bilateral ties.

Mr Stadler noted that although Swiss companies run their business and investment decisions very independently from the government, that fact would not interfere with the overall quest to deepen trade relations between the two countries.

He also lauded President Akufo-Addo for the impressive and sustainable economic development in Ghana, saying, “I am impressed about the economic development in the last decade and the growth forecast for 2019. Ghana gained Middle-income country status, sound and prudent macroeconomic policies and a strong private sector”.

New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Mark Ramsden, assured of his country’s commitment to tighten trade and economic cooperation with Ghana.

“New Zealand sees the scope to deepen trade and economic cooperation and links amongst Commonwealth members, he said, stating that his country would pursue relentlessly that agenda at this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government’s meeting.

The envoy raised the issue of climate change and was happy that both Ghana and New Zealand recognized the threat that climate change presented and was working to address the challenge.

Ambassador Pule Batimanki Mphothew of Botswana told the President that Ghana was a strategic development partner to his country.

He said even though bilateral relations between the two nations was excellent, there was a need to further strengthen that cooperation to move both countries to a higher level of development.

President Akufo-Addo who placed value on the relations between Ghana and the four countries said the content of the relations ought to be transformed and strengthens economically through extensive trade for the mutual benefits of the peoples of Ghana and that of those respective nations.

He asked the countries to increase investments in Ghana and get their businesses communities to collaborate with local industries in the country to add value to raw materials to lend a boost to the nation’s industrialisation drive and export development.

  • Dont use mobile phones in your kitchen Fire Commander warns

A Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) commander is warning against the use of mobile phones in the kitchen, especially during cooking, as it has the propensity to cause domestic fire outbreaks.

Commander at the Accra Metropolitan Fire Station, Lilly Ashong Robertson, explained radioactivity from mobile phone calls have the propensity to cause gas cylinders to ignite.

She thus underscored the need to prohibit mobile phone use in the kitchen, as is the case at fuel filling stations, indicating that it is one of the surest ways to prevent domestic fires.

Ms Ashong who is a divisional officer grade one at the GNFS gave the warning at the maiden safety week celebration of the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) in Accra.

She said many of the fire outbreaks in the country are due to negligence and disregard for safety precautions.

A Divisional Officer Grade II, Mr E. Osei Owusu who took workers and stakeholders of IRECOP through fire preventive and control measures indicated there is the need for all organisations and homes to install fire extinguishers at their premises and learn how to use them.

He stated that the GNFS is always available nationwide to train and assist people to keep safe from fire outbreaks. He advised employees to always ensure that all main switches are put off when they sense fire outbreak.

DO II Osei Owusu described the training for IRECOP staff as timely, considering that the waste they collect are stored for a while before processing; something he said could trigger fire due to the fact that the waste are to be stored in different temperatures.

General Manager of (IRECOP), Ms Betty Brown Nyadu stated they so far have an encouraging safety record.

She said the vision of IRECOP is to inculcate safety policies and procedures in all aspects of management decisions and to protect employees by arriving at an accident free work environment.

The safety week was organised to further educate the employees on safety and to allow the workers to be audited in order to identify safety gaps and draw corrective measures to some of their operational standards and procedures.

“In contemporary times, safety has moved from a voluntary option to an inevitable choice in management practice, thus-every manager should endeavor to take health and safety issues very critically to forestall the loss of lives and the payment of unnecessary claims” she said.

Ms Nyadu said the Ghana Labour Act makes it mandatory for the employer to put premium on health and safety by minimizing hazards at the work place, a position she said IRECOP shares in.

  • Take advantage of Ghanas political stability to invest more — Deputy Trade Minister

A deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Carlos Ahenkorah, has told the Chinese Investment community to take advantage of Ghana’s stable political environment to extend their operations to Ghana.

He particularly encouraged Chinese investors to make use of the various free trade agreements signed by Ghana with other African countries to enter into the ECOWAS region.

Speaking at the Ghana Investment Conference at Changsha in China, Mr Ahenkorah said the government was ready to facilitate and partner with Chinese investors to establish sector-specific industrial parks and other businesses that would bring further growth to the two countries.

He mentioned the petrochemical, integrated aluminium, industrial salt and pharmaceutical industries as some of the sectors where the country would welcome Chiness investors.

The minister is in China with a Ghanaian delegation to participate in the first China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE).

The three-day event seeks to create the platform for African businesses to exhibit their products on Chinese markets.

The event is taking place at Hunan International Convention and Exhibition Centre in the Hunan Province.

    Favourable

Mr Ahenkorah told the Chinese investors that Ghana’s investment protection and promotion instruments and regimes “are favourable to investors across the globe who wish to invest in the country.”

He added that the country had embarked on some reforms to improve the investment climate for both local and international investors.

“Even though our impressive credentials can help us attract trade and investment into Ghana, our government is currently pursuing innovative reforms and programmes to further improve the ease of doing business in the country,” Mr Ahenkorah said.

To that end, he stated that the government was implementing a three-year comprehensive business regulatory reforms strategy to make the country the most business-friendly in Africa.

“The reforms are aimed at improving the time, procedure and cost of doing business in the country by removing bottlenecks in the business environment,” Mr Ahenkorah reiterated.

    China’s support

The minister applauded the Chinese government for its support for the One district, One factory (IDIF) initiative, indicating that China’s National Building Materials Corporation (CNBM) was supporting 22 enterprises with a US$400-million loan facility.

“I am happy to state that eight factories under the CNBM facility are ready to commence production before the end of this year,” he said.

On trade volumes, Mr Ahenkorah said available records had revealed that trade volumes between the two countries had surged from less than US$100 million in 2000 to US$7.25 billion in 2018.

He said Ghana’s exports to China had reached US$ 2.44 billion and added that the country imported US$4.81 billion worth of goods from China between 2000 and 2018.

  • Hong Kong protests: China says protesters ‘trample rule of law’

China has accused protesters who vandalised Hong Kong’s parliament on Monday of “serious illegal actions” that “trample on the rule of law”.

A group of activists occupied the Legislative Council (LegCo) building for several hours after breaking away from a peaceful protest.

Hundreds of police used tear gas to clear the building.

Beijing urged the city to investigate what it called the “criminal responsibility of violent offenders”.

Hong Kong is part of China, but run under a “one country, two systems” arrangement that guarantees it a level of autonomy, and rights not seen on the mainland.

Monday’s disorder followed weeks of protests over a controversial extradition law, which critics have said could be used to send political dissidents from Hong Kong to mainland China.

The Chinese government response followed similar remarks by Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam, who condemned what she called the “extreme use of violence” by the protesters at a pre-dawn press conference on Tuesday.

Flanked by Police Commissioner Lo Wai-chung, she said the actions of those who broke into LegCo were “something that we should seriously condemn, because nothing is more important than the rule of law in Hong Kong”.

The government suspended the extradition bill last month and it is now unlikely to pass, but the protesters want it scrapped completely and are calling on Ms Lam to stand down.

    What happened on Monday?

Monday was the anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

The day is marked by an annual pro-democracy march, but this year’s event was expected to be larger than usual.

There were some scuffles in the early morning, as protesters blocked streets around the venue where Ms Lam was attending the annual flag-raising ceremony.

At around midday, dozens of demonstrators broke off from the main protest and made their way to LegCo.

They effectively besieged the building, as a large crowd of several hundred watched from a distance, before eventually smashing their way through the glass facade.

Inside, they defaced the emblem of Hong Kong in the central chamber, raised the old British colonial flag, spray-painted messages across the walls and shattered furniture.

At about midnight outside the building, protesters clad in plastic helmets and brandishing umbrellas retreated from a baton charge by riot police, who quickly overcame their makeshift barriers.

Within an hour, the streets around the building were clear of everyone except the media and police.

    What did Carrie Lam say?

Speaking in the early hours outside the police headquarters, Ms Lam said it was a scene that “really saddens… and shocks a lot of people”.

She contrasted Monday’s tumultuous events with the annual peaceful march on 1 July, which she said reflected “the core values we attach to peace and order” in Hong Kong.

  • Kenya flight ‘stowaway’ body found in Clapham garden

A suspected stowaway who is believed to have fallen from the landing gear of a flight into Heathrow Airport has been found dead in a London garden.

The body – believed to be that of a man – was found in Clapham just before 15:40 BST on Sunday.

Police said it was thought the individual fell from a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi.

A neighbour said the man fell a metre away from a resident who had been sunbathing in the garden.

    ‘Very shaken’

The man, who did not want to be named, said he heard a “whomp” so he looked out of an upstairs window and saw the body and “blood all over the walls of the garden”.

“So I went outside, and it was just then the neighbour came out and he was very shaken,” he said.

The neighbour, who asked not to be named, said a plane spotter, who had been following the flight on an plane tracking app from Clapham Common, had seen the body fall.

The plane spotter had arrived almost at the same time as the police and told them the body had fallen from a Kenyan Airways flight.

“If it had been two seconds later, he would have landed on the common where there were hundreds of people – my kids were in the garden 15 minutes before [he fell]”, the neighbour added.

“I spoke to Heathrow. They said this happens once every five years.”

Describing the victim, he said: “One of the reasons his body was so intact was because his body was an ice block.”

The Met Police said a post-mortem examination would be carried out in due course and the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Kenya Airways said the aircraft was inspected and no damage was reported.

A bag, water and some food were found in the landing gear compartment on the aircraft when it landed.

A spokesman for the airline said: “The 6,840km (4250-mile) flight takes eight hours and 50 minutes. It is unfortunate that a person has lost his life by stowing aboard one of our aircraft and we express our condolences.

“Kenya Airways is working closely with the relevant authorities in Nairobi and London as they fully investigate this case.”

It is not the first death of this kind on the Heathrow flight path.

In June 2015, one man was found dead on the roof of notonthehighstreet.com’s headquarters on Kew Road, Richmond, while another was found in a critical condition after they both clung on to a British Airways flight from Johannesburg.

In August 2012, a man’s body was found in the undercarriage bay of a plane at Heathrow after a flight from Cape Town.

  • Rwandan sentenced in US for lying about genocide role

A Rwandan man has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the US for immigration fraud and perjury after hiding the fact that he was involved in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Jean Leonard Teganya, 47, “was convicted and sentenced for the most serious form of immigration fraud: lying about his status as a war criminal to win asylum in the United States,” said US Attorney Andrew E Lelling, in a statement issued by the department of justice.

In just 100 days in 1994, about 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists. They were targeting members of the minority Tutsi community, as well as their political opponents, irrespective of their ethnic origin.

Teganya was a medical student in Rwanda at the time of the genocide and was accused of leading teams of soldiers around a hospital and identifying Tutsi patients, the US statement says.

“Once discovered, the Tutsis were taken and killed behind the maternity ward,” it adds.

Teganya fled Rwanda in 1994 and ended up in Canada where he applied for asylum. But the authorities turned down his claim because of his alleged involvement in the genocide.

He then avoided deportation and went to the US where he was detained. In his application for asylum in the US he did not disclose his activities during the genocide, the US government says.

Teganya is expected to appeal against the judgement, Reuters news agency reports. His lawyer argued that as a Hutu, he feared being accused of involvement in the genocide and therefore fled.

Once his sentence is complete, Teganya is likely to be deported from the US.

  • Proposed new parliamentary chamber block design unveiled

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, has unveiled the design of the New Parliamentary Chamber Block.

The unveiling was done during a courtesy call paid by a delegation from the Architectural Firm Adjaye & Associates.

In attendance, were the Leadership of the House, some members of the Board, the Clerk and other Principal Directors of the Parliamentary Service.

A statement copied the Ghana News Agency said during the presentation of the model Chamber Block to the Speaker of Parliament and the Leadership, Mr David Adjaye indicated that the concept of the archetype was inspired by the Akan saying, “Ti kro nko agyina”, literally meaning, “two heads are better than one.”

“This key concept is one that depicts the idea of Ghanaian democracy, where Parliament represents a body with various members interlocked in decision making,” he said.

Commenting on the sitting capacity of the model New Chamber Block, the Speaker of Parliament clarified that the 450 seater Chamber did not necessarily mean that the number of Members of Parliament would be increased.

“However, the monumental project is planned to be futuristic and one that will stand the test of time and for posterity,” he asserted.

The new Chamber, with a sitting capacity of about 450 Members of Parliament, would house other facilities including diplomatic offices, a library, a museum, a church, a mosque, eateries, press conference rooms, galleries, a car park, an upper gallery garden, a post office and other facilities to complete the Parliamentary enclave.
