Richard Attah has been a regular member of the team in recent call ups. He has kept his standard since returning from the tournament in Cameroon.

Attah was impressive once again for Heart in their goalless draw against arch rivals Asante Kotoko when he made five crucial saves.

  • I feel like crying when I listen to radio nowadays – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has condemned the use of invectives on the airwaves by some media practitioners and people who appear on radio and TV shows.

Kwesi Pratt wondered how a person could go on the radio or Television and denigrate others or peddle falsehood with sheer alacrity.

He was commenting on the arrests of Accra FM’s Presenter, Kwabena Bobie Ansah.

Mr. Bobie Ansah has been charged with offensive conduct over his allegations that the First and Second Ladies, Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira Bawumia have stolen State lands.

The Police also arrested some persons who took to social media and traditional media to vent their spleen.

The leader of the #FixTheCountry demo, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, was arrested and is charged with treason felony following his comments on social media about wanting to plot a coup.

NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly called ‘Abronye DC’, was also not spared as the Police apprehended him over his claims that former President John Mahama is involved in a coup plot.

He has been charged him with two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt seemingly blamed the media for the abusive language on the airwaves.

He vehemently rebuked the persons who have resorted to insults when addressing issues in the media.

” . . When I listen to discussions on radio, it looks like I should cry . . . sometimes, they even talk about how someone sleeps women. I become very sad when I listen; a lot of things we say on the radio and TV most are not true,” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi.

  • I never served as presidential staffer under Mahama Barker-Vormawor

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a known #FixTheCountry convener, has dismissed claims that he served as a presidential staffer in the Mahama administration.

He said the allegations levelled against him by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC are “factually inaccurate.”

A release from the private legal practitioner and law academic who is currently in prison custody, said available public information does not support the claims Abronye DC made in his statement to the Ghana Police Service.

“I have today furnished the Police with a list of officers appointed by the former President, under the Office of the President Act and which was reported to Parliament by the office of the former President during all his time in office”, he said.

“As the Police will confirm, the list does not contain my name, and there is no record anywhere that presents me as a presidential appointee to who the term presidential staffer properly applies,” he added.

The Cambridge PhD student, facing a treason felony charge, noted that he worked as a civil servant at the Foreign Affairs Ministry but was never appointed as presidential staffer.

He said, in April 2013, he was seconded by the Foreign Affairs Ministry to serve as a liaison officer.

However, “consistent with the practice of the Civil Service, I remained at all times a staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this role, I discharged my duties to the institution of the Civil Service and was subject at all times to the direction of the Civil Service, even at the Presidency.

“Also, I was at all times on my civil service pay, earning between ¢800 to ¢1000 net monthly.”

Barker-Vormavor explained why he decided not to react to the claims of Abronye DC all this while.

“I have ignored all these allegations for the same reason one does not interrogate why a fly is drawn to excrement. A person who lives in the gutters craves companionship, and I have little appetite for the gutter politics the 4th Republic has normalised.”

He is hoping the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take steps to clarify his status as a foreign service officer during the period of his secondment to the office of the President.

  • Youth urged to explore innovative ways towards knowledge acquisition

Mr Mumuni Sulemana, the Northern Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, has urged the youth to explore innovative ways towards knowledge acquisition and volunteerism.

Mr Sulemana, in a speech read on his behalf at the Activista-Ghana Northern Regional Delegates Congress in Tamale, expressed worry over the dwindling spirit of volunteerism among the youth and called on them to get involved in such activities to acquire some experience for their future careers.

Activista-Ghana, a youth advocacy organisation that champions climate change, poverty and the incidence of injustice, organised the congress to strategise on ways to enhance its policies and programmes.

The event was on the theme: “Rekindling the Spirit of Volunteerism for Social Change”.

It was aimed at taking stock of the year under review, plan for the coming years, and elect representatives of the various district cells for effective coordination in youth and community development.

  • Adequate funding available for 21st-century model JHS projects Rev. Ntim Fordjuor

The Deputy Minister for Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has announced that the government has made adequate funding available for all ongoing educational infrastructure projects in the country, including 21st Century Model Junior High Schools were part.

According to him, all the ten Model Junior High Schools awarded on contract are expected to be completed within ten months, assuring that the projects would not delay for any reason.

Speaking at two separate ground-breaking ceremonies for the construction of two 21st Century Junior High School complexes in the Ashanti Region on Friday, Rev. Ntim Fordjour indicated that the first phase of the 1,200-students capacity school complexes for the two projects would cost GH¢1.6 million each as it will also have libraries, information and communication technology (ICT) facilities, laboratories, sickbay, teacher’s bungalow and other facilities to boost the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“Funding is already available for every project that we are cutting sod for. If one is probably comparing with the narrative of times past, for this government, since 2017 that we took power, every education infrastructure that would be commenced, would only be commenced when funding has been earmarked and budgets approved for it,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour said.

The Deputy Education Minister said the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government prioritises education as a critical tool for the nation’s transformation, hence the huge investment being made in the sector.

He explained that the provision of modern education infrastructure was part of the nation’s educational reforms and the 21st Century Model Junior High Schools projects are no exception.

“A time has come for us to review this. A time has come for us to improve upon this narrative. One of the surest effective strategies that we are employing to ensure that we cure the weakness at the secondary education level is to build infrastructure and equip it with all the facilities required to give true secondary school education to JHS pupils,” Rev. Ntim Fordjuor said.

The Member of Parliament for Ejisu and Deputy Minister for Finance, John Kumah, lauded the government for the project, which, when completed, will go a long way to improve educational development, as well as transform the lives of the people of the area and the rest of the nation.

He also commended the traditional leaders in the area for providing 14 acres of land for the project and pledged to support the development of the Municipality.

The Adontenhene of Abenase, the Chief Executive Officer of Student Loan Trust, Nana Agyei Yeboah, was full of praise to the government for remembering the people of the area in the distribution of the national cake.

He said the traditional leaders were ready and would continue to support all government initiatives that stood the chance of turning around the people’s fortunes.

    Background

As part of efforts being made by the Education Ministry through its vision of reimaging education, it is currently repositioning the entire educational system to produce a critical mass of assertive and empowered Ghanaian students with essential skills for the country’s socio-economic transformation.

To attain this goal, the government has put in place various initiatives geared toward equipping students with skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication and collaboration, among others, to compete or excel globally.

  • I’m extremely upset and anxious about cedi depreciation Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has noted that the current depreciation of the cedi is a situation that brings him anxiety and makes him upset.

Addressing the situation for the first time last week, President Akufo-Addo said his government is making efforts to arrest the decline of the cedi and restore its stability.

“I’m aware of the anxiety there is in business circles and throughout the population about the recent depreciation of the cedi. I’m extremely upset and anxious about it too. But I want to assure you that all efforts are being made to arrest the decline and restore the cedi to stability in order to improve the competitiveness of Ghanaian industry, and I think very soon you will see some results,” the president noted.

Since the commencement of the year, Ghana’s currency has seen significant depreciation against other major foreign currencies.

As of January this year, the cedi was trading at around 6.25 for a dollar but has since increased to around 6.60 for a dollar currently.

Against the pound sterling, the cedi, which was trading around 8.43 for a pound sterling early in the year, is currently trading at 8.92 for a pound sterling.

The situation is no different from the Euro and other major currencies.

The situation has caused some analysts to express grave concerns, especially on the disparity of the cedi rate provided by the Bank of Ghana and the ones given the foreign exchange retail market.

  • Man busted for exhuming queen mothers corpse for money rituals

A man believed to be in his early 40’s has been arrested for exhuming a queen mother’s corpse at Ekumfi Gyinankoma in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region over the weekend.

Kojo Essel, from Agona Swedru, with other suspects who are on the run, was caught exhuming the queen mother’s corpse at the community cemetery on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at about midnight.

Speaking in an interview with a local journalist, an eyewitness who is a hunter in the community said he caught the men in the cemetery exhuming the queen mother’s corpse from the grave.

According to the hunter, he retrieved cutlasses, shovel, pinch bar, pickaxe, crowbar, hammer, and six bag sacks.

The hunter narrated that he marched the suspect to the Chief’s palace that night.

He said a search conducted in the suspect’s bags led to the retrieval of two fresh human skulls, fresh human penis, corpse beads, four corpse breasts, rusted necklaces, and teeth.

The suspect confirmed the incident, saying that they were two in number.

He said they hail from Kwahu in the Eastern Region but live at Agona Swedru.

  • Akufo-Addos office alone is seeking half of E-levy profit Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Samuel Nartey George has said a chunk of the revenue that the government is targeting from the E-levy will be going to the office of government machinery.

He said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is demanding half of the expected revenue to his office alone.

He told Johnnie Hughes on the New Day show on TV3 Monday, February 21, that the government is targeting to raise ¢5.5billion from the E-levy.

“Half of the E-levy is going to Office of the Government Machinery; his office is taking half of the E-levy,” he said.

The government seeks to approve the E-levy policy proposal in the 2022 budget statement. However, the proposal has met stiff opposition from the Minority in Parliament and a section of the Ghanaian public.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, is still surprised at the dissenting voices because, in his view, the proposal will propel development.

He, however, expressed optimism that the policy would be approved, but if it does not go through, the government will turn to the petroleum sector for revenue.

Asked what the alternative is, in the event the E-levy fails, while speaking to journalists at a function in Accra on Friday, February 18, he said, “There are always many alternatives, but really, you are looking at the future, and you are looking at ways we can solve the issue of the increased revenue and everybody participating.

“The challenge is, for example, assuming you earn a million cedis a year and you transfer all of that through MoMo. What am I asking of you? ¢15,000. Is that what you have been fighting against? Or if you are a student and assuming you earn 100,000 cedis, which is unlikely, that means what, a 1500 cedis.

“So you then begin to ask the question, what is it that we are fighting against? And if I have also said the first hundred cedis will not be a part of it which means 3000 monthly income.

“The alternatives are many; you can go into petroleum, but is that really what you want? The mood of the country is different from the arithmetic in Parliament, and that is why I have gone around.”

Mr Ofori-Atta had earlier ruled out returning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support to deal with the challenges that the local economy is going through at the moment.

Speaking at the 3rd Townhall meeting on the E-levy on Thursday, February 10, at the Radache Hotel in Tamale in the Northern Region, he indicated that returning to the Bretton Woods Institution would have dire consequences.

The government was called upon to return to the IMF for support instead of relying on the proposed E-levy for revenue.

For instance, a former Member of Parliament for New Juabeng South, Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, believed that a return would rescue Ghana’s struggling economy.

“Without a doubt, I think we should be placing a call to Washington if we haven’t done that. We are just not going to ask for the funds just because E-levy has been passed or not. E-levy will just bring about GH¢5 billion. We are in a deep hole in our tax revenue and facing difficulties, so going to the Fund will give us some support.

“So there is nothing wrong with going to the Fund. Ghana is a member of the IMF, so what is wrong going to ask for support when we are in difficulties to go and pool resources. If I was the finance minister, I would be convincing the President that it is about time we went back,” he told Citi.

Mark Assibey Yeboah also added that the revenue expected to be accrued from the E-levy is to ensure the economic stability government is eyeing.

He further cast doubts on the government’s ability to raise the projected GH¢6.9 billion target, saying the government’s maximum from the controversial e-levy is GH¢5 billion.

“The GH¢6.9 billion target cannot be realized. There are a lot of exemptions, so, in my estimation, the maximum amount we can get from the E-levy is GH¢5 billion, and that is less than a billion dollars, so I do not think that the E-levy is going to be a panacea to our revenues. Going to the IMF will ensure some stability, and above all, we are going to get some $3 billion”.

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, also made a similar call to the government.

Asked whether President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should go to the IMF, while speaking on the New Day show on TV3 on Monday, February 7, he answered, “I think it is something that they have to consider. If it is the only [way] that will take us out of this problem, then the earlier, the better.”

But Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, who had earlier stated that the government would not go back to the IMF, insisted that “I can tell you, as my colleague deputy said, we are not going back to the IMF, whatever we do we are not [going back]. The consequences are dire; we are a proud nation, we have the resources, we have that capacity, don’t let anybody tell you we are not people of short-sighted, we need to move on.”

The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene, has said that the party should have done the application for the polling station election online to avoid chaos.

According to him, this will help curb the phenomenon of party persons not getting access to nomination forms which is currently causing trouble among the grassroots of the party in some parts of the country.

“Consistently I have hammered home this point since 2020. I have been saying that nominations should be done online.

“In fact, in 2020, I supervised the party’s election in the Eastern Region, the Oti Region and the Greater Accra Region and I was informed that some persons were not getting forms to buy,” he said in Twi in an interview with Okay FM monitored by GhanaWeb.

Obiri Boahene further stated that the grievances of members for not being able to nominate persons they want to be executives at the grassroots was the reason behind the party losing some seats in parliament, because the aggrieved persons refused to vote for the party.

Meanwhile, there have been issues with the sale of nomination forms in some polling stations since the party began the processes to elect polling station executives, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

Scores of NPP supporters have besieged the offices of the party but have been told that the nomination forms for polling station executive have finished.

The NPP on February 14, 2022, released the processes to elect officers for the party at the polling station level.

According to the party, nomination forms for the election can be picked from February 19, 2022, to February 29, 2022, at a cost of GH¢10.

Vetting of candidates will be done between February 22, 2022, and February 24, 2022, with the election being held from February 25, 2022, to March 5, 2022, in more than 38,000 polling stations across the country.

Oil prices on the global market are projected to stay within the US$71 and US$79 per barrel bracket for most of 2022.

This is according to a January 2022 Monetary Policy Report released by the Bank of Ghana.

The report noted that due to impact of the coronavirus pandemic on economies, oil demand and supply chain disruptions on the global oil market, oil prices will be subjected to some uncertainties in 2022.

“The global oil market will be subject to significant uncertainties in 2022, notably due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on economic growth, oil demand, and the production decisions of OPEC+.”

“Restrictions imposed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 before the emergence of the Omicron variant raises the possibility of a decline in global oil consumption, leading to downward pressures on oil prices. These factors, among others, could keep oil prices volatile between US$71 and $79 per barrel during the year,” the BoG report noted.

Meanwhile, on the global market, oil is currently selling above US$90 with consumers grappling to pay more for the commodity.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, when the truck with registration number GW 9829 R which was coming from the Wa Senior High direction of the Banjan street heading to the Lawmars drinking spot junction, burst its front tire of the passenger side, losing control of the vehicle in the process and eventually rammed the truck into the shops.

An eye witness, Iddrisu Salifu narrating the incident to GhanaWeb’s Upper West Regional correspondent, IIyaas Alhassan said the tipper truck first demolished a kebab stand situated in front of the shops whose attendant had not yet come to work, before demolishing the veranda to the provision store and finally running into the tailoring shop.

Immediately the truck came to a halt, the driver went straight into the provision store to see whether or not something had happened to the owner but luckily, the woman was inside the shop when the incident happened and nothing happened to her.”

There was no casualty recorded from the incident.

Attempts to get a response from the shop owner and driver was unsuccessful as they both appeared too traumatized to utter a word.

The only response that came from the shop owner whose name was only given as Hajia was her continuous muttering of, “God, thank you. God, thank you.. God, thank you,” apparently thanking her Lord for sparing her life.

The Police were at the accident scene to assess the situation in order to commence investigations into the matter but efforts to speak to them were unsuccessful as they declined to comment.

According to Most Rev. Dr. Paul K. Boafo, the Presiding Bishop of Methodist Church of Ghana, who was leader of a delegation that met Mahama earlier this week, they had met among others, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He also summarized the reason for their intervention as, taking proactive steps to forestall a recurrence of the violent scenes that were witnessed in Parliament during the post-2022 budget debate especially with the matter of the Electronic Transactions tax (E-Levy).

“We have come as heads of churches of the various associations and groupings in Ghana. Our history has it that the church has played a very significant role in our development and the welfare of our people.

“And so, the major stakeholders, when things come of concern, we are all to take it up and find answers and resolutions to it, so that at the end of the day what we preach and what governance is all about can be achieved to the glory of God, he added.

On the back of the chaos in Parliament, he added: “Christian bodies became alarmed and said will not sit but see how best we can together, find a solution to it. So we have made various approaches.”

    The list is below:

1 – Minister of Finance on two occasions
    2 – Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu
3 – Some members of the Minority
4 – Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin
5 – President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo their last meeting

    Why the meeting with Mahama

Rev. Boafo explained that after all those meetings: “We have seen that there are other major stakeholders we need to make approaches to and see how best we can find answers to what is happening to us, looking at all the circumstances and the conditions around us.

“It became very necessary during our series of interventions and interactions … it became necessary that we cannot leave His Excellency the Former President behind but to also make a move to see him.

“And see how best we can all have discussions and look at what is happening to us in our country and if there is a way out by which we can all look at it and come to a resolution,” he added.

  • Misuse of ginger can be detrimental—Nutritionist

Mrs Georgina Coffie, a nutritionist with the Tulaku Health Center in the Ashaiman Municipality, has said the use of ginger could be detrimental to persons with some health conditions.

Mrs Coffie said inasmuch as ginger had its benefits such as helping in weight loss, regulation of appetite and the reduction of the digestive enzyme in the stomach, its consumption by those with some health conditions such as third-trimester pregnancy could be negative.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Ashaiman, Mrs Coffie, who is also a General Nurse, explained that during the first trimester of pregnancy, ginger could help minimise morning sickness.

However, she said, it could lead to induce labour when taking in the third trimester.

She indicated that people with blood disorders such as haemophilia, which is a condition that stops blood from clotting, must desist from the usage of ginger as that also contributed to blood thinning.

She also said people with low weight must not eat ginger as it had weight losing components, which could have dire consequences for those suffering from low weight.

She said diabetic patients and those on high blood pressure medications should avoid ginger. Mrs Coffie advised all to be vigilant and diligent in using certain health products and always seek medical attention from qualified health professionals before patronizing them.

  • DR Congo in danger of ‘fifth wave’ of COVID-19 – Minister warns

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are warning the public not to drop their guard against Covid-19, as the country enters a period that has, in the past, seen higher infection rates.

Public Health, Hygiene, and Prevention Minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani on Monday said the country has seen the lowest infection rates in the last three weeks, but warned there is a threat of a fifth wave if Covid-19 protocol were ignored now.

He said that “the analysis of data from the first two years clearly indicates that the [prevalence] of the Coronavirus in our country is in the middle and end of the year.

“This indicates the likelihood of a fifth wave between April and July this year, said Patrick Muyaya, government spokesman, quoting the Minister for Health in a statement the Minister gave to the Council of Ministers earlier on Monday.

Dr. Jean-Jacques Mbungani himself called on the people “to remain vigilant, to wear masks, to keep washing their hands and to be vaccinated in order to fight effectively Covid19.

“This is the first time that the Covid-19 pandemic has declined simultaneously. This is thanks to responsible and appropriate management. Our government has done everything to contain this fourth wave. The big drop has been observed for the last 3 weeks.”

Health officials also claim that the DRC is on track to defeat the Omicron variant, just as neighbouring countries have seen lower infections in February.

But with less than having achieved just about 1 percent of the vaccination rate at Covid-19, the DRC, a country of about 90 million people, still faces a threat of a new wave.

Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the head of technical secretariat for the response to Covid and Director General of the National Institute of Biomedical Research, called for the urgency “to improve on the trend of low vaccination rate in order not to become an endemic country.”

“The world will be divided into two parts because the disease will become endemic and therefore there will be continents where the disease prevalence is low…

“Because these countries have a very high vaccination rate and countries with high endemicity such as African countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo because the vaccination coverage is very low,” explained Dr. Jean Jacques Muyembe on Monday.

As of 10 February, less than 90,000 people have been fully vaccinated against the Coronavirus in DRC.

  • Nigerians slam public spat over ‘super cop’ arrest

The arrest of Nigerian “super cop” Abba Kyari on drug-trafficking charges has laid bare the “public bickering” between two of Nigeria’s law enforcement bodies, an analyst tells BBC Focus on Africa.

“There was a kind of attempt to protect [Mr Kyari] from investigation,” says Idayat Hassan, director of the Centre for Democracy and Development.

“We got to this point due to the refusal of the Nigerian police to release [Mr] Kyari immediately to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency [NDLEA].”

She notes that the police only handed over Mr Kyari once it also publicly indicted a number of NDLEA officers accused of being involved in the drug-smuggling.

The real challenge is the “clean-up” they’ll now have to “convince” the Nigerian people, Ms Hassan tells the BBC. “There is only one Nigeria and all these agencies are expected to work together. It doesn’t infuse the trust citizens want to have.”

But she believes the spat will “have a positive impact because people will know there are no sacred cows. Even with the slight on their integrity by the police I think the [NDLEA] will want to do more”.
