Over 81,000 graduates have been deployed to serve their mandatory National Service for the year 2021/2022.

According to a statement signed and issued by the new and Acting Executive Director of the NSS, Osei Assibey Antwi, these graduates would serve in the respective user agencies they have been assigned to, reports graphic.com.gh.

Before that though, prospective service personnel have been advised to log on to the scheme’s website http://www.portal.nss.gov.gh to confirm the specifics of their placements.

The statement added that they would then have to visit their respective user agencies for endorsement of their appointment letters.

“Management wishes to inform the general public that, some prospective service personnel have been placed on hold for further verification due to discrepancies detected in their online registration details.

“Notifications have already been sent to the affected personnel and they are hereby directed to visit any regional office of the scheme with a copy of the enrolment forms, student ID, any national ID and a soft copy of their passport picture saved with their NSS number as file name to clear them for posting,” the statement said.

The list of 81,081 graduates was released on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Also, the management of the NSS has directed all graduates to begin their service on Monday, October 11, 2021, after they have been accepted into their agencies.

They are to do this while still undergoing the validation exercise, a measure that has been implemented to facilitate service registration in the wake of the novel Coronavirus, the statement said.

  • Anti LGBTQ+ bill: Sam George can’t lecture me on law – Akoto Ampaw

Private legal practitioner and one of the influential persons who are against the anti-gay bill currently before Parliament, Mr Akoto Ampaw has said Ningo Prampram lawmaker Samuel George cannot lecture him on human rights activism.

Mr Akoto Ampaw said he has been a human right activist for years hence, Sam George cannot talk to him about rights and freedoms.

“Anybody who knows me and most of the people who are behind this press conference will know that we have been fighting for human rights and freedoms of our citizens for years and we have paid a price for it so I will not have the likes of Sam George trying to talk to me about human rights and national independence and so on.

“But we have a clear evidence of their group organizing in November, October last year an African congress with the World Congress of families, which is not a Ghanaian organization so he and his people should be last people talking about foreign influence. They will take refuge in the fact that we are being influenced by foreign forces, we know this trick, they are busy collecting funds from these same foreign people and governments so what are they talking about,” he told TV3 after a press conferefnce held by the group to register their concerns against the anti-gay bill.

Sam George had criticised the group including Akoto Ampaw and Prof Kwame Karikari over their position on the bill.

He described Prof Karikari and the entire group as a hypocrite following their submission.

Prof Karikari had said the bill which Sam George and some of his colleague legislators are promoting is dangerous because it seeks to promote hate for homosexuals in the country.

In his view, gays and lesbians are human beings and deserve to be respected and protected as any other person.

To that end, he said, any law that seeks to create problems for this group should be rejected.

He said this while speaking on the First Take with Dzifa Bampoh on 3FM on Monday October 4.

He said he and a few of his colleagues who are fighting for the rights of homosexuals to be respected in Ghana are going to hold a public forum to debate this subject.

“Hopefully, the media may also want to pick up the debate, debate them so that the public will instantly get to know the views that we hold and the views that the proponents of what we considered to be a dangerous bill also hold.

“We think we live in a democracy and we must be grateful to God that we live in a democracy so that whatever parliament, the executive or any branch of government does will be openly discussed and people can therefore take their decisions and then the lawmakers and the executives can also take some wisdom from the public debate.

“We know that most societies have prejudice against homosexuality, lesbianism and these other social practices. We are not at all surprised that the overwhelming majority have prejudiced or even hate these small minority of people in society. We have no problem with that. What we are saying is this.

“This law is setting up the minority up. Our constitution does not discriminate about humans beings unless the proponents of this bill, unless the 95 per cent who say they don’t like homosexuality, we want them to say that homosexuals, lesbians are not human beings. Are they human beings also are they not human beings?

“If they are human beings and they are human beings then we think that they are protected by the constitution so any law that is made to arouse, promote engineer and mobilize hate against that minority is against the rights of those minority people and should not be passed.”

Speaking on the same programme, Sam George said “He has made so many sweeping comments and I expected that he would have been held to strict proof. His argument is hollow and if I was marking this as a script he will score an F.

“This is someone who says the constitution protects people, you [Dzifa Bampoh] read to him a section of the bill which provides protection for persons who identify as LGBTQ from extra judicial treatment and he tells you it is a hoax.

“This is the same person asking us to provide proof of the health challenges, the public risk that the LGBTQ community proposes and he is telling you that our bill is a hoax without any proof.

“Today 4th October, the head of the Ghana AIDS Commission, speaking to another media house in Accra decried the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Ghana and the fact that HIV prevalence in Ghana is rising. In that interview, he was asked specifically which demographic is pushing this number up, he said men having sex with men. That is the empirical evidence. Now can you ask Prof Kwame Karikari and his cohorts what empirical evidence they have to say that say part of our bill is a hoax? Has he educated himself and has he read the bill or he is basically just running riot in town on the basis of their misconception?”

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was laid in the House on Monday, August 2 and read for the first time.

Reading for the first time, a clerk in the legislative assembly stated that the Bill proscribes lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) and other related activities and propaganda or advocacy and promotion for same.

It also came to light that it supports protection for children and persons who are victims or accused of homosexuality.

Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako referred the Bill to the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Committee for consideration.

“For the first time, it is referred to the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for consideration and report,” Mr Asiamah Amoako, who is also the MP for Fomena, directed.

The controversial bill has already divided opinion in the Ghanaian public discourse.

While some, particularly the religious and traditional groupings, have supported the Bill and hopeful of its passing, others say it could incur the wrath of the international community against Ghana.

The Bank of Ghana has once again reminded the public and institutions against the issuance of dud checks.

A statement issued on Tuesday providing financial literacy education on dud cheques reiterated that anyone who fails to comply with the directive will be jailed, or asked to pay a fine whilst their offence is reported to the credit reference bureau.

For first timers, the central bank cautioned, “Your financial institution will place you under surveillance for a minimum period of three years when you issue a dud cheque for the first time.”

“Again, if you issue a dud cheque for the second time within three years of the first offence, your financial institution will report your conduct to the Bank of Ghana,”, adding “your details and the breach shall be recorded in a dud cheque register maintained at the BoG,” it explained.

But for third time offenders, the Bank of Ghana said consumers will be banned from issuing cheques within the country for a minimum period of three years.

As part of the financial literacy education, the Bank of Ghana called on the public and institutions to ensure they had enough funds in their respective accounts prior to issuing a cheque.

When found culpable for issuing dud cheques, the central bank said consumers will be banned from accessing new credit facilities from all financial institutions for a period of three years.

It added that perpetrator’s names will be published in the national newspapers.

A Daily Graphic report has indicated that some unscrupulous persons have stolen 10 crash barriers on the newly constructed Pokuase interchange.

It noted that the 4 feet crash barriers, numbering 10 cost US$3,500.

The purpose of these crash barriers is to prevent moving vehicles from falling off over to the road from Kwabenya towards the interchange to prevent accidents.

In an interview with the Resident Engineer of the project on the recent development, Kwabena Bempong noted that the case has been reported to the police for further investigations.

  • Two suspected robbers shot dead; manhunt launched for accomplices

Two suspected armed robbers who attacked a gold dealer at Manso Dawusaso in the Ashanti Region have been killed, an official statement said.

The suspects were part of an armed gang who engaged the police in a shootout in the Amansie South District town.

Police however managed to arrest one of the robbers, while the rest bolted, the statement issued by the Ghana Police Service said.

“The Anti-Robbery Task Force of the Ashanti Regional Police Command in an intelligence-led operation shot two armed robbers who later died at the hospital. Another suspect, linked to the crime, Abraham Kwasi Tetteh, has been arrested whilst four others are being pursued,” the statement issued by spokesperson of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwasi Ofori read.

Police in the statement explained that the suspected armed robbers forcibly invaded the house of the gold dealer and disarmed his private security guard and fired shots into the residence.

  • Attempts to make D7 entry requirement for public universities is inimical – Prof. Oduro

A Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Cape Coast, Prof George Oduro has discouraged attempts to make D7 a bracket entry requirement for public universities, describing the move as inimical.

He argues that the current limited facilities to accommodate the huge enrolment will further widen the student to lecturer ratio while the lack of remedial courses to assist such students to upgrade before enrolling in programmes will affect the quality of products from the Universities.

Prof Oduro made this known to GBC NEWS, following an address by the Education Minister Dr Yaw Adutwum at the swearing-in and Inauguration of the Governing Councils of some public technical Universities where he tasked them to innovate and create access programme for D7 students as the President has set an agenda to achieve 40 percent tertiary enrollment ratio.

Prof Oduro however cautioned against promoting access to education without interfacing it with quality.

While discouraging the practice of using academic credentials to judge good education in the country, Prof Oduro encouraged students with a speciality in technical and vocational skills to take up diplomas in practical courses over grammar type education.

  • BOST saved Ghana from paying $26 million to BDCs Managing Director

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) says its current management has saved Ghana from paying $26 million to eight Bulk Distribution Companies.

The eight companies had asked BOST to pay $37 million for 22.7 million litres of petroleum products which allegedly went missing from tanks of the national strategic oil storage company between 2009 and 2014.

While addressing the press on Sunday, September 26, 2021, the Managing Director of BOST, Mr. Edwin Alfred Provencal, said BOST however refused to pay that amount, as its independent checks had shown that 8.2 million litres of petroleum products, translating to $11 million had rather gone missing.

“Each of these companies who claimed they were owed $37 million now accepted that we owe them $11 million. We saved this country a whopping 26 million,” he said.

He also disclosed that BOST had settled some $585 million out of the $624 million arrears owed various institutions since 2017.

Mr. Provencal pointed out that BOST was able to offset the debt through its internally generated funds and government assistance.

“We did not do that by going to government alone. BOST contributed to the payment of these trade liabilities through our internally generated funds amount to 73%.”

BOST is performing better under NPP government Hadzide

Former Deputy Minister for Information, Pius Enam Hadzide had earlier said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has managed BOST better than the previous government.

Mr. Hadzide on Eyewitness News listed debts BOST had accrued under the previous NDC government to justify his claim that the company performed poorly under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

“The NDC made the claim that BOST was efficiently managed by Mahama. You may want to take a moment to look at the record of BOST as of January 2017. A trade debt of 624 million dollars, the legacy debt of 273 million cedis, two-year operations without audited financial accounts, 10 million dollars of BOST finances were locked in the TOR debt through Sahara oil. The litany of failure is this what the NDC refers to as the efficient management of BOST?”

  • Police Service assures of stringent measures to curb rising crime cases

The Ghana Police Service has advised the general public to be cautious as cases of robbery increase in various parts of the country.

Some days ago, videos of daylight car robbery incidents at Sampa Valley in the Ga South Municipality and Apenkwa Traffic Light on the Achimota stretch went viral on social media.

These incidents among several others have heightened fears among the public, who feel their lives remain in danger as they go about their daily activities.

The Ghana Police Service as a matter of urgency has introduced urgent additional security measures in the wake of a spike in robbery incidents, especially in the national capital, Accra.

In an interview with Citi News, the Acting Director-General of the Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said his outfit is making use of its patrol teams to combat the crime.

“We are also going to ensure that in the coming days, there is going to be high police visibility in the metropolis. One important thing I would like to appeal to the public is for them to give us information that might help in tracking some of these criminals. We assure the public that we are closing in intelligence-wise, and we will do everything possible to get closure on such cases.”

Touching on bank-related robbery, ACP Kwesi Ofori advised persons who intend to withdraw huge sums of money to exercise caution or contact the police for assistance.

“We have asked corporate institutions, businessmen of high and low status who will be going to the bank to solicit assistance from the police, and they should also make sure that they put better security arrangements. We are also encouraging people to use other modern means of transacting business and avoid carrying huge sums of money if not necessary. If it is necessary, they can count on the police for assistance”, he added.

We must begin interrogating bank staff over bank-related robberies Prof. Aning

Security analyst, Prof. Kwasi Aning, believes the time has come for financial institutions to embark on rigorous scrutiny of their staff following the increasing cases of bank-related robberies in the country.

He says routine checks must also be carried out on both company and personal electronic devices, used by the staff to assess information that might have aided such crimes if any.

Prof. Aning said stringent security measures among the police and the banks must be adopted to ascertain the culpability of bank staff in case of robbery attacks on persons who may have transacted business at the bank.

“This lady who withdrew money from the bank, how did criminals know that he had money on her? Are we picking up people within that particular bank, checking their laptops and phone records, or if there is a compromise of such sensitive information to the client.”

“Some really critical questions need to be asked to assure us or those who use the banking facilities that the backgrounds of bank staff are checked, secured, and they are routinely also checked again because [this kind of crimes] raises serious fundamental questions because of the gang-style manner in which this operation was carried”, Prof. Aning emphasized.

  • Ejura committees report full of factual inaccuracies, speculations Kaakas family

The family of the late Ibrahim Mohammed, popularly known as Kaaka, has said the report by the three-member committee of inquiry into the disturbances at Ejura, is fraught with factual inaccuracies.

The committee in its report concluded that the activism of Kaaka cannot be linked to his death.

It explained that his death could more likely be linked to a family feud.

In the 55-page document, the committee also cast doubts on representations by one Abeewakas Umar, to the effect that Kaaka was killed as a result of his activism.

It said it was convinced about the evidence of Sadia Fuseini because it was more “reasonably probable than the unsubstantiated evidence of Abeewakas.”

“We, accordingly, find that the death of “Kaaka” was not directly linked to his social media activism. It is more probably a family feud. This is also supported by the testimony of Aminu Mohammed, a resident of Ejura and a friend of the late Kaaka”, portions of the report read.

But the brother of the late Kaaka, Nafiu Mohammed, who spoke on Eyewitness News on Monday said, the findings and recommendations of the committee are completely problematic.

“Going through the document, you will realize that there are a lot of factual inaccuracies. But what can we do? It is human beings who sat before four individuals, and they came out with this, so we have to study it. But generally. I have problems with everything about the findings and recommendations.”

“We have lived for centuries and there is no feud among us. We think that in the law court, we can examine some of the testimonies because some of the witnesses knew they were going to peddle falsehood, so they went in camera. So to be frank, we are not happy with the report, it contains a lot of speculations and factual inaccuracies.”

Among other things, the committee recommends the removal of the MCE for the area, who had already pulled out of the race for a new MCE, and compensation for the affected families and victims.

It also recommended the transfer of the Ejura Police Commander.

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, earlier in July 2021, directed the Interior Ministry to conduct a public inquiry following the killing of two persons and injuries to four others by soldiers during a protest against the killing of a social activist, Ibrahim Muhammed, popularly known as Kaaka Macho.

Kaaka died on Monday, June 28, 2021, after he was attacked by unknown assailants while returning home from an event he attended in the area.

Earlier reports suggested that Kaaka was killed because of his social activism, which some persons felt was making the government unpopular, but police reports suggest otherwise after three people including his brother were arrested and put before the court over the killing.

The Interior Ministry subsequently constituted a three-member committee chaired by Justice George Kingsley Koomson to probe the issue and make recommendations.

  • We shouldnt use COVID-19 vaccine as immigration control tool Nana Addo to world leaders

President Akufo-Addo has made an appeal to world leaders not to use the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination as a tool for immigration control, as that will be retrogressive.

Addressing the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President said it is unfortunate that some countries, especially in Europe, are not recognizing vaccinations with the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine manufactured in India.

His main concerns stem from the fact that many African countries received the vaccine through the COVAX facility.

“One unfortunate development appears to be the recent measures on entering into some countries in Europe which suggests that Covidshield, the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in India, are not recognized by these countries,” he said.

“What is intriguing is the fact that this vaccine was donated to African countries through the COVAX facility. The use of vaccines as a tool for immigration control will be a truly retrogressive step. The last time there was such an upheaval in the world was during the second world war, which led to the establishment of a new world order,” he added.

There have been several reports of extra scrutiny of persons who received the AstraZeneca jabs in Europe.

In some instances, the vaccination certificates of such persons were not accepted.

But President Akufo-Addo said such a measure must be done away with.

Ghana has administered more than one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine with only about half of the population receiving the mandatory two jabs.

In August, an additional 249,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines were received through the COVAX facility.

A 38-year-old Ghanaian man, Richard Yaw Dorpe, has been jailed for 40 months in the United States of America for cruelly scamming a 68-year-old widow of her valuables including a cash amount of $300, 000 and electronic gadgets. He was led to jail last Friday.

    Details of Scam

Between August 2016 and January 2017, Mr Dorpe joined an online dating site, OurTime, a site meant for persons in their fifties with the sole aim of duping unsuspecting users, since he was not qualified to join the site.

A Ghanaian-Dutch couple has allegedly been blocked from flying to Amsterdam, Holland on board a KLM plane.

In an exclusive interview with African Entertainment, Nico van Staalduinen, the Honorary Consul for Bulgaria in Ghana, says he and his Ghanaian-Togolese wife, Kay Djifa Sodatonou, had boarded KLM at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra and were destined for Amsterdam, Holland.

But he alleged that they were asked to disembark the plane.

According to him, they had registered their opposition to KLM’s attempt to stop serving meat from their economy class flights meals worldwide except for destinations such as Argentina and Texas.

In protest for the attempted cancellation of meat which might affect travellers from Ghana, Mr van Staalduinen said he and his wife took onboard the KLM banners urging other passengers oppose the cancellation of meat from meals.

“We were seated and had 2 banners on board. Purser asked if we were the ones spreading flyers. We said yes because we had the best intentions for KLM and wanted to warn them that they could lose passengers with serving only vegetarian meals,” he told African Entertainment exclusively via telephone.

According to him, “She [Purser] asked what our rolled-up posters were for. I answered we wanted to take a picture before flying.”

He added that “She said she can’t allow that and asked me to give the banner. I said no problem but tomorrow when landing in Amsterdam I will alert the Dutch press that we were not allowed to take a picture of my wife with the banner.”

He noted that “She called the captain and told him we threatened her. I said absolutely not. Other passengers also said we didn’t. The captain said he wouldn’t go into discussion with us we had to leave the flight. I didn’t protest and left.”

  • Use your expertise to turn around Metro Mass Transit Transport Minister to Board

The Minister of Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has charged the Governing Board of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) to bring their expertise to bear by introducing innovative measures that will help turn around the transport company.

According to the Minister, the challenges confronting the transport company are enormous and will require wise counselling and decisions from the Board, teamwork and experience to address them.

Inaugurating a nine-member Governing Board of MMTL in Accra on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, on behalf of Mr Asiamah, the deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Obeng Adom, tasked the Board to take up the challenge and ensure that the operations of the transport company are boosted.

“Over the years, the company has gone through several challenges, including the drastic reduction in the operational fleet, frequent breakdowns, and rising operational cost. It is our expectation that the new Board will take up this challenge to ensure that the company is revived to the level of winning back its share of the market and expand its services”, he noted.

The Minister also entreated the Board to work in unison with the company’s management to address the increasing number of agitations among MMTL’s workforce and ensure that industrial harmony prevails, stressing that “these agitations if not addressed could potentially derail the ongoing efforts”.

Among the Governing Board members of Metro Mass Transit Limited are, Hon. Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, Chairman, Mr. Albert Adu-Boahene, Member, Mr. Francis Kofi-Nunoo, Member, Mr. Robert Karikari-Darko, Member, and Mrs. Bernadette Addo Dankwa, Member.

That notwithstanding, the Ministry is pursuing other arrangements to bring in more buses to augment operations.

However, there would be the need to improve infrastructures such as terminals and maintenance workshops, urging the Board to support management to deliver on its mandate.

On its part, the Ministry will provide the needed support and guidelines to enable the Board to deliver on its mandate but cautioned against unfortunate practices of the temptation by the Board to take over the role of management in any instance.

“I will entreat the Board and Management to work as a team to realize the objectives of the company. As a matter of caution, I wish also to remind the Board that under the governance framework, they are under the supervision of the Ministry and, for that matter, must report directly to the Ministry no matter the magnitude of the issues, and we will do our best to resolve it. I operate an open-door policy, and members are free to knock on my door as and when you require my attention to discuss issues of importance to the development and improvement of MMTL’s operations”, he noted.

Chairman of the Board, Hon. Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, speaking on the task bequeathed on the shoulders of the Board, said they are poised to working together with the management of the company to achieve their objectives.

He expressed their appreciation to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for having reposed confidence in them by nominating them to serve on the Governing Board of MMTL.

“As a Board, we are aware of the huge challenge thrown to us as a result of the matters we will be faced with to resolve and surmount. We, however, pledge that we are ready to face these challenges squarely and deal appropriately with them”, he noted.

He urged Members of the Board to work hard as a team as they strive to make Metro Mass Transit Limited the most preferred transport company in the sub-region.

“We promise to work in unison with all stakeholders of the company including the government as a whole, the Ministry of Transport, shareholders, employees, passengers among others to lift up the company to its rightful place”, he pledged.

Touching on the challenges of the company, Hon. Marfo said the Board, together with management, will explore all the avenues at their disposal to get spare parts to revamp all broken down buses and also ensure that those that have been declared not fit for purpose are scrapped off.

Welfare issues of workers of MMTL, he added, will duly be addressed.

The defunct gold dealership firm’s customers are bemoaning the lack of government commitment to pay their locked funds.

Fred Forson, spokesperson for the aggrieved customers told journalists in Accra on Tuesday, September 14, during a press conference that:

We call on the government in the spirit and within the wind of cooperation blowing in parliament to work closely with the august house to find an amicable solution to this conundrum that customers find themselves. Finding a solution will end the extinction of over a million Ghanaians whose lives and very existence have been shut with the shutdown of Menzgold.”

  • 61-year-old mason commits suicide

A 61-year-old mason Henry Kwasi Ameho, known as Apaw, has committed suicide by hanging this dawn at Kasoa Lamptey.

According to neighbours, he had no problem with anyone in the area; hence they found it strange what could have triggered the suicide.

They, however, hinted that the deceased became very quiet and kept to himself without talking to people until he allegedly committed suicide.

The deceased’s wife, Madam Abena Nyarko, narrating the incident, expressed shock and sadness over the unfortunate incident.

Madam Abena Nyarko said she has three children, and the husband’s death has devastated the family.

She told Rainbow Radio’s Nana Yaw Asare that the two had no problem hence found it unfortunate that the husband would take his own life.

She further revealed she consistently told the late husband to meet her family because he had not met her family before since they started dating.

She also stated the deceased did not officially perform the rites to make her his wife, and that was one thing she kept asking him about.

“He had no problem with anyone. We had no problem, and I don’t remember him complaining that he had a problem with me. The thing was that he had not performed my marriage rites, and so I kept reminding him to go and see my family and introduce himself to them. We went to church together on Sunday, returned home and cooked, and ate together. After, I left only to come back to see that he has committed suicide,” she narrated.

  • Look for a better approach to licensing teachers Peter Nortsu-kotoe urges govt

Member of Parliament representing the Akatsi North Constituency in the Volta Region, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, says that the government must come with a better approach than relying on the Ghana Tertiary Licensure Exams for teachers.

This follows the failure of over eight thousand, four hundred and forty-two (8,442) teachers who sat for the mandatory examination.

Speaking to UniversNews, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe urged the government to review the current program and add the licensure exams to the teacher education curriculum.

“We are saying that suspend it, review it, and do what is a better approach to licensing teachers. We have said what we need to say; it is now left with those who are managing education in the country to see the wisdom in our proposal and see how best they can help this country”.

In support of this, the National Coordinator for the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana, Joshua Owusu Yeboah, highlighted that the exam is relevant, yet, it does not determine the intellect of these tutors in their profession.

“I am not against the profession, the cancellation or the suspension of it, but I am in for good measures to be put in place. Because trainees pass over fifty courses, so my take on these licensure exams is that this exam cannot determine whether a teacher is good or bad. This licensure exam is theory, but on the field, it’s more practical than this theoretical work”.

Joshua Yeboah encouraged the government to initiate these measures to resolve the issues surrounding the licensure examinations.

“The first thing I want the government to do is that they should include the licensure exams in the teachers’ curriculum. Secondly, there should be a provision of course material. If the government take these into consideration, it will help solve the issue surrounding the teacher licensure exams.”

    Background

Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah, founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, prior to appearing in court had been in the custody of the Ghana Police Service, for creating “multiple videos containing threats, the brandishing of a weapon and the assault of some police personnel.”

  • Help strengthen private universities – Prof. Omane-Antwi urges gov’t

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Accra Business School (ABS), Prof. Kwame Boasiako Omane-Antwi, has underscored the need for private universities to be strengthened to contribute their quota to provide easy access to tertiary education for free senior high school (SHS) graduates.

Consequently, he has called on the government to, as a matter of urgency, support private universities in the acquisition of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) architecture to facilitate teaching and learning.

He said the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic had led to a paradigm shift from traditional teaching and learning to the virtual space, hence the need for universities to be adequately equipped to embrace digital learning to ensure quality educational outcomes which would, in the end, benefit the nation for its human resource development.

Prof. Omane-Antwi was speaking at the 11th congregation of the ABS at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra last Saturday.

It was on the theme: “Education in a post-COVID-19 era: A digital perspective”.

    Ceremony

A total of 227 students were conferred with various degrees and awarded diplomas by the school.

Ms Richlove Owusu Akomea was adjudged the Overall Best Student (MSc), having received the Valedictorian Award.

    Post-COVID-19

Prof. Omane-Antwi said factors such as a strong digital infrastructure, expansion of broadband infrastructure, the adoption and implementation of government policies and programmes designed for future-oriented education, constant power supply, among others, were crucial to ensuring successful digital learning in a post-COVID-19 era.

“Speaking as the Chairman of the Governing Council of a private university, I wish to make a special appeal to the government, on behalf of private universities in Ghana, that the factors enumerated above, particularly support in the acquisitisition of ICT architecture, including supply of data and network connectivity for teaching and learning, should claim the urgent attention of the government.

“Private universities should be strengthened to play a pivotal role in providing easy access to tertiary education for free SHS graduates, as well as the STEM(M) Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine educational agenda of forward-looking countries today,” he said.

    Loyalty

Prof. Omane-Antwi, while commending the management of the school for its contribution to the academic lives of its students, charged the students to, in turn, be loyal to the county in their various capacities as professionals, emphasising: “As you go out there as policy makers, educational entrepreneurs or whatever capacity you may find yourselves in the public space, remember that your country needs you, as history is being written with great speed.”

Additionally, he said, the narrative in the higher educational sector was changing rapidly, especially in the context of the new regulatory framework developed for all private universities, and that the ABS, with determination and a sense of purpose, was poised to soon join the already existing fully fledged chartered institutions.

“We pride ourselves at the Accra Business School on the quality of our teaching and of the learning and student experience, and I think there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that we do it at the highest threshold,” Prof. Omane-Antwi said.

    Government committed

Delivering the keynote address, a Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, said the government was committed to supporting private universities to aid accessibility to quality tertiary education towards the attainment of the 40 per cent gross tertiary enrolment by the year 2030.

He added that the government had accelerated efforts at delivering digital learning, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the call by Prof. Omane-Antwi to invest in the development of digital learning was a step in the right direction.

He noted that the government had taken steps to realign teaching technologies at both the tertiary and the pre-tertiary levels in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He lauded the management of the ABS for offering quality education to students which met global standards and reiterated the government’s support for institutions which produced graduates who created jobs and contributed massively to nation building.

Prof. Cedric Bell, the President of the ABS, in his remarks, noted that the school had repositioned itself towards achieving its goal of becoming a leading Business School in Africa.

There are 73 accredited private universities in the country, contributing to the provision of tertiary and specialised education in the country.

Over the years, however, many of them have been suffering due to the low number of intake and the cost of teaching and learning.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, which saw the closure of schools and the introduction of online teaching and learning, affected many tertiary institutions.

    Growing call

Prof. Omane-Antwi’s call is the latest by managers of private universities, following similar calls by the Methodist University College of Ghana, the Presbyterian University College, the African University College of Communications (AUCC) and the Private Universities Association of Ghana (PUSAG).

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, last March implored the government to come to terms with the fact that private universities were very key stakeholders in the delivery of quality education in the country and so it ought to be intentional about helping them to position themselves to provide higher education for the citizenry.

Rt Rev. Prof. Mante reiterated his call on the government to take a second look at its level of support to the mission-founded universities to see how best it could provide educational support and incentive packages for the private universities.

Also, the PUSAG has, on several occasions, expressed concern about the fact that private universities in Ghana did not have access to government interventions such as the GETFund, state scholarship and research grants or subsidy for infrastructure expansion.

Again, the President of the AUCC, Dr Christopher Akwaa-Mensah, had, at a school event, called on stakeholders in the educational sector to expand debate on the absorption of fees to help the private universities have more intake to help resolve the enrolment deficit for tertiary education.

  • PNC fight’ ends up in court

The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mr Moses Dani Baah, and the 2020 flag bearer of the party, Mr David Apasera, have sued 18 top executive of the party over their removal from office.

The legal action adds to the recent internal wrangling, disunity, accusations and counter-accusations that have rocked the PNC.

Among other things, the suit – filed at the Accra High Court last Thursday, is seeking an order barring the General Secretary of the party, Ms Janet Nabla, from holding herself out as the general secretary of the PNC.

It is also seeking an order restraining Ms Nabla and Mr Bala Maikankan, who was elected as the acting National Chairman of the party at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Kumasi on September 7 this year, from going to the PNC’s National Headquarters or having anything to do with the office.

The plaintiffs are also asking the court to declare all decisions at the said NEC meeting on September 7 null, void and of no legal basis.

It was at the said NEC meeting that Mr Dani Baah and Mr Apasera were purportedly removed from office as the respective national chairman and leader of the party.

    Statement of case

In their statement of claim, the plaintiffs aver that the said NEC meeting, which led to their removal, was illegal, null and void as the said conveners had no capacity to organise the meeting.

It is also their case that the meeting was held in flagrant disregard of the PNC’s constitution.

“The plaintiffs aver that the mandatory quorum for NEC meetings was not met at the September 7, 2021, meeting held in Kumasi to conduct the business of NEC,” they argued.

    Disagreement

Currently, it is not clear who holds power in the party because the general secretary has been suspended by a faction of the party, while the national chairman and the 2020 flag bearer have also been removed from power by another faction.

The issues started with a serious disagreement between Ms Nabla and Mr Dani Baah over some party finances with regard to Election 2020, which spilt into accusations and counter-accusations between the two.

On August 28 this year, the leadership of the party held an NEC meeting in Accra where Ms Nabla was suspended as the general secretary over what the NEC described as “gross misconduct, incompetence and insubordination”.

The suspension led to the trading of accusations between the divided factions in the party, which spilt into the media space.

On September 1 this year, the faction supporting Mr Dani Baah held a news conference at the party’s headquarters to introduce a new acting general secretary, but that meeting was disrupted by supporters of Ms Nabla, which needed the police to intervene.

It was a week after that incident that the faction supporting Ms Nabla organised the NEC meeting in Kumasi and removed Mr Baah and Mr Apasera from the office.

  • Busunu-Tachali bridge still inaccessible

The Busunu-Tachali Bridge that links Busunu and Daboya in the Savannah Region remains inaccessible days after the torrential rains in the area.

Although the floodwaters from the Tachali River that submerged the bridge have receded, vehicles still cannot use the bridge because a portion of the road that was washed away has not been fixed.

An accident occurred close to the bridge last Saturday evening when a truck fell on its side as the driver attempted to drive across the bridge from the Busunu side of the road to Daboya.

    Appeal

Some residents of the area have, consequently, appealed to the authorities to repair the road to ensure the smooth and safe transportation of goods and people.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the residents said they were going through unbearable difficulties, and that only a quick response to their appeal to fix the road would save the situation.

    Accident scene

The Savannah Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Mohammed Tohiru, told the Daily Graphic that it was dangerous for vehicles to use the bridge.

“As you can see, vehicles cannot use the bridge and we cannot also use a canoe to cross the river due to the level of the water,” Mr Tohiru, who was present at the scene of the accident, said.

He added his voice to the appeal by the residents for the road to be fixed, as a matter of urgency, to enable safe passage for vehicles on the bridge.

He further called for the re-engineering of the road that connected the Busunu-Tachali Bridge to forestall a recurrence of the present situation.

He said the Lingbisi-Bisa, Magnori-Murugu and Busunu-Tachali roads remained inaccessible.

Besides, the Tamale-Daboya road also remained permanently inaccessible because there was no bridge on the White Volta at Daboya, he added.

The government has made a promise to construct a bridge over the White Volta at Daboya to create an alternative route from Tamale through Daboya to the southern part of the country, but work is yet to begin.

Apart from the Daboya Bridge, the government has also made a commitment to construct two new bridges to replace the Buipe and the Yapei bridges over the Black Volta and the White Volta, respectively, in the Central Gonja district.

The construction of the bridges will provide smooth access from the Savannah, Northern, North East and Upper East regions to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
