  • Morocco ruling party suffers heavy election defeat

Morocco’s long-ruling Islamists have suffered a crushing defeat in parliamentary elections to liberal parties seen as close to the palace, according to provisional results announced early Thursday.

The Justice and Development Party (PJD), which headed the ruling coalition for a decade, saw its support collapse from 125 seats in the outgoing assembly to just 12, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit said during a press briefing following Wednesday’s polls.

It was far behind its main liberal rivals, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), with 97 and 82, respectively, and the center-right Istiqlal Party with 78 seats in the 395-seat assembly.

The RNI, which was a junior member of the governing coalition, is headed by billionaire businessman Aziz Akhannouch, described as close to the palace.

And the main opposition PAM was founded by the current royal adviser, Fouad Ali El Himma, in 2008.

The Istiqlal (Independence) party, the oldest in Morocco, made a remarkable comeback, adding 32 seats.

The magnitude of the Islamists’ defeat was unexpected as, despite the absence of opinion polls that are banned near election time, the media and analysts had believed the PJD would still take first place.

Swept to power in the wake of the 2011 uprisings around the Middle East and North Africa, the PJD had hoped to secure a third term leading a ruling coalition.

King Mohammed VI will name a prime minister from the party that won the poll to govern the nation of 36 million for the next five years, succeeding Saad-Eddine El Othmani.

The final results should be known on Thursday.

Turnout was 50.35 percent, according to the interior minister, higher than the 43 percent at the previous legislative polls in 2016, but lower than the 53 percent during the 2015 local elections.

But changes to the voting system meant that it was the first time Morocco’s 18 million voters cast ballots in both parliamentary and local elections on the same day, in an effort to boost turnout.

    Accusations of vote-buying

In 2011, the North African kingdom adopted a new constitution devolving many of the monarch’s powers to the parliament and the government.

However, regardless of who holds elected office, major decisions continue to come from initiatives of King Mohammed VI.

On Wednesday evening, the Islamists alleged “serious irregularities,” including “obscene cash handouts” near polling stations and “confusion” on some electoral rolls, with some voters finding they were not listed.

However, the interior minister said voting took place “under normal circumstances” apart from some isolated incidents.

The short, largely lackluster election campaign, with no big gatherings due to the coronavirus, had already been marred by accusations of vote-buying.

The PJD and the RNI also exchanged heated barbs in the final days ahead of the vote.

The former prime minister and PJD leader Abdelilah Benkirane attacked the RNI boss, billionaire businessman, and Agriculture Minister Akhannouch, in a fiery Facebook video on Sunday.

“The head of government must be a political personality with integrity who is above suspicion,” he said.

Akhannouch retorted in an interview on Monday that the attacks were “an admission of failure” by his opponents.

Following the previous elections in 2016, the RNI leader secured critical ministerial jobs for his party, including the economy and finance, and industry portfolios.

For the first time since the first elections were held in Morocco in 1960, parties’ shares of seats will be calculated based on registered voters, rather than those who actually cast their ballots, in an amendment seen as favoring smaller parties.

Whatever the result, political parties are expected to adopt a charter for a “new model of development” with a “new generation of reforms and projects” in the coming years, the king announced recently.

All parties are expected to sign up, regardless of who wins the election.

The plan’s major aims include reducing the country’s wealth gap and doubling per-capita economic output by 2035.

  • Jerome Boateng in court in Munich to face assault charges

German 2014 World Cup winner Jerome Boateng appeared in court in Munich Thursday to answer allegations he assaulted the mother of his twin daughters in 2018.

Wearing a dark suit and white shirt, the 33-year-old walked into Munich regional court just before 10:00 local time (0800GMT).

After 10 successful years at Bayern Munich, the centre-back signed a two-year deal to join French Ligue 1 side Lyon last week on a free transfer but is back in Munich to face the allegations in court.

Boateng denies claims he injured his ex-girlfriend, named as Sherin S., during a heated argument while the pair were on holiday with their daughters three years ago.

A verdict is expected to be returned later today and if found guilty, Boateng could be fined or jailed for up to five years.

The original date for the hearing was postponed last December because a witness was unable to appear due to the Covid-19 virus.

Boateng has millions of followers on social media platforms.

He and Sherin S. are locked in a separate on-going legal battle over custody of their twins.

Boateng has so far faced a turbulent year.

His ex-girlfriend, influencer, and model Kasia Lenhardt, was found dead having committed suicide in a Berlin flat in February while he was away playing for Bayern at the Club World Cup in Qatar.

He was immediately given permission to fly home after news of her death.

The 25-year-old took her life six days after Boateng finished their relationship, then gave details of the break-up during a frank interview with top German daily Bild.

After making 363 appearances for Bayern, winning nine Bundesliga and two Champions League titles, Boateng’s contract was not extended when it expired in June before he was snapped up by Lyon.

He was a key part of the Germany squad which won a fourth World Cup crown in Brazil but has not played for his country since being axed by former German coach Joachim Loew in March 2019.

However, Boateng still hopes to add to his 73 international appearances under Loew’s successor Hansi Flick, his former coach at Bayern Munich, who masterminded the Bavarian giants claiming a treble of titles in 2019/20.

The son of a German mother and Ghanaian father, he found himself at the centre of a debate over integration when he was attacked for his skin color by the leader of Germany’s far-right party in 2016.

Germany’s leader Angela Merkel got involved and invited Boateng to an event at the chancellery, where she made a point of telling Boateng’s father, who was also there, “You have a great son, you can be proud”.

  • National Security arrests Islamic cleric, students with terrorist links – Report

National Security operatives late last week raided a community in the Savelugu Municipality and arrested over 30 persons who were believed to have links with terrorist groups across the region.

A Joy News report said the raid took place in Nambahala near Biare last Friday and was specifically targeted at an Islamic School from where 33 persons were picked up and flown to Accra for questioning.

The report added that as of yesterday (September 8), 27 of the arrested party had been granted bail whiles the others, including a top Islamic cleric and founder of the raided Islamic center, remain in custody in Accra.

The detained party are said to be in possession of some evidential material that links them to terrorist groups in Burkina Faso and Mali.

Meanwhile, residents in the community according to a Joy News reporter are terrified at the development given that the cleric has lived with them for some two decades.

Commenting on the development, Alhaji Musa Barry, General Secretary of Fulani Welfare Group confirmed having gotten a hint of the raid and subsequently receiving confirmation via a call from a National Security official who invited him to a meeting on Saturday around 10 am.

“I was only there to interpret their language, they are all Fulani, but they are not herdsmen, they are all students of that cleric. So they were investigating about their mobiles, the communication and other things which help the National Security to interpret,” he said on the September 9 edition of Joy FM’s News Nite programme.

In mid-June this year, Police in the Northern and Upper East regions were put on high alert following intelligence gathered about a possible terror attack.

According to the intelligence, some bandits from Burkina Faso known for their operations on Ghana, Burkina Faso border are planning to launch attacks in the coming days.

A police wireless message quoted by 3news.com read as follows: “Bandits suspected to be in possession of military-grade weapons may have already infiltrated Ghana at yet-to-be-identified locations in the northern regions and they are poised to launch the attacks any moment from now.”

  • Audit Report:742 students fail to return Free SHS core textbooks

Some 742 students who completed in the 2019/2020 academic year in four institutions failed to return a total of 2,594 core subject textbooks to their schools, the 2020 Auditor-General Report has revealed.

The Report of the Auditor-General on the Public Accounts of Ghana- Pre-University Educational Institutions for the year ended December 31, 2020, available to the Ghana News Agency in Tema showed that the core subject textbooks were valued at a total cost of GH¢77, 820.00.

This was in contravention of Section 52 of the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, 2016 (Act 921).

The PFM Act requires a Principal Spending Officer of a covered entity, state-owned enterprise or public cooperation responsible for the assets of the institution under the care of the Principal Spending Officer to ensure that proper control systems exist for custody and management of the assets.

The institutions cited were; Ashaiman SHS with 237 students and 718 unreturned textbooks costing GH¢21,540.00; Teshie Technical Training Centre, with 177 and 578 unreturned textbooks valued at GH¢17,340.00.

The rest are; West Africa Senior High School which had 167 students default, and 610 textbooks unreturned valued at GHS18, 300.00, while 161 students of the Achimota Senior High School failed to return 688 textbooks totalling GH¢20, 640.00.

The report said, the situation could deny other students the use of the books and could constitute a financial loss to the schools and the state.

The Auditor-General, therefore, recommended to the management of the institutions to notify the parents of the affected students to return the books, or in default, pay their value as directed by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

The report also stated that the Headmaster and the storekeeper should be held liable for the amount if they failed to recover the books from the students.

According to the Auditor-General, the irregularities identified in the 2020 report, resulted, generally from the lack of commitment on the part of the Head of the Institutions to ensure compliance with established internal controls and regulations governing the management of financial resources.

  • Ghana Police Service has 18,000 convicts on the database – IGP

The West African Police Information System (WAPIS) Ghana, has imputed into its database about 18,000 convicts to step up an interagency cooperation in the fight against crime.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. George Akuffo Dampare said the data was being interrogated by institutions that conducted investigations in the country.

The Acting IGP said this in a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Isaac Ken Yeboah, the Director General in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, at the opening of WAPIS Three-day Regional Training on Quality Data for some selected law enforcement officers in Accra.

WAPIS was formed to create a system for sharing of criminal data in West Africa to combat transnational crime such as arms smuggling, illicit drug trafficking, piracy, and cybercrime.

The selected law enforcement officers for the training were from Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Guinea Bissau and Liberia.

The Acting IGP noted that WAPIS had deployed equipment such as scanners, computers and UPS to its stakeholders in the country for data input and said his administration would put in more efforts to ensure the smooth implementation of WAPIS programme in Ghana.

Superintendent of Police Mrs. Naomi Acquah, second in Command, INTERPOL Accra, said the availability and access to quality data, that was in compliant with laid down rules and procedure, had been the bedrock of all successful law enforcement activities and same had made the world a better and safer place.

Supt. Acquah said quality data was accessed by its accuracy, completeness, consistency, timeliness, validity and uniqueness, adding that the need for quality electronic data to ensure a better and safer place had become more pertinent because of the numerous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This training could not be held at a more opportune time than this when the West African Region is plagued with issues such as political instability, increased maritime related crimes, proliferation of small arms, robbery.

“The resounding call by citizenry for law enforcement officers to urgently rise up to the task of making the world safer is louder than ever,” Supt. Acquah said.

She said the situation, therefore, underscored the relevance of WAPIS programme, which when implemented would be an invaluable asset and provide law enforcement officers with quality data to work with.

Baba Gana Wakil, Ambassador of ECOWAS, noted that one of the challenges in fighting transnational organised crime in West African, was lack of appropriate infrastructure to collect, store, manage, analyse and share criminal data among Law Enforcement Agencies at national and regional levels.

“Most of the activities could not be accomplished within the project period as a result of bureaucratic obstacle in the operationalization process at the national level and the absence of national budgets to support the project, which has also been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he noted.

Baba Wakil, therefore, urged member states to collaborate closely at national, regional and global level to fight transitional organised crimes.

He appealed to the European Union (EU) to consider extending the implementation phase of WAPIS project beyond June 2022, to ensure its successful implementation in the remaining member states.

  • Unwholesome chicken sale in Kumasi, Environmental Health Officers on high alert

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has said its Environmental Health Department has doubled its effort to clamp down on the sale of any unwholesome food product on the market following the discovery of 15 cartons of rotten chicken meant for sale to the public.

The Public Relations Officer of KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu, said the Food Hygiene Unit, of the Environmental Health Department plans on conducting a thorough search on cold storage facilities in the metropolis, to see if there are any unwholesome food products being sold for public consumption.

The development follows the arrest of two persons by KMA Metro guards when they attempted to cart 15 cartons of unwholesome chicken at Adakwame Lorry Station around Mbrom, in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The rotten chickens were being transported by one Abiba and is believed was intended to be smoked or roasted for sale within Asuofua, Adakwame and Kejetia environs. One of the alleged suspects, Abiba has since led the Environmental Health Officers at KMA to arrest the operator of the cold store at the Asafo Market, where some more rotten chickens were discovered. The two have been sent to the Ridge Police Station for further investigations.

Meanwhile, according to the Public Relations Officer of KMA, the Police officers handling the case have said the suspects are being processed for court, while investigations continue to find out if there are more rotten chickens from the source where the products were transported to the cold store.

Speaking in an interview with the B&FT, the Deputy Director in charge of Public Health, in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Michael Rockson Adjei, noted that the consumption of wholesome products can lead to death among other health risks.

The consumption of unwholesome food products, processed or raw, results in food poisoning due to bacteria infestation, of the contaminated food item. This makes the food products detrimental to human health when it is consumed.

Dr. Michael Rockson Adjei also said: “the other side is that there is loss of nutritional value, as the food goes bad. Should one even escape the acute outcome like death or diarrhoea or the other effects, you may not benefit nutritionally.”

He therefore cautioned that while there are agencies like the Food and Drugs Authority, as well as the local assemblies that have the mandate to ensure that only healthy food products are allowed on the markets, the public should also be mindful of what they buy. “Individuals have their own duty to protect themselves while the regulatory agencies and assemblies continue to do their job.”

He entreated the public to pay attention to expiry dates on food items sold on the market as well as being mindful of the environment where they purchase or patronize cooked and uncooked foods.

  • MMDCE appointments will be resolved this month Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has indicated that the list of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will be released this month.

“This month of September, all these matters will be resolved… in the course of this month, it will be done,” President Akufo-Addo said in response to a question on the matter in an interview with Skyypower FM in Takoradi as part of his tour of the Western Region.

He said the necessary consultations were ongoing to pick the right persons for the assemblies.

The official position of the presidency on the delay in appointing MMDCEs has been that it is not hampering development at the local government level.

Speaking on the delay, the President said “there is the need for broad consultations and that is what I have done. We have set up committees at the regional and national levels to make recommendations for me.”

“I have to really make sure the recommendations fit the political purposes of the government and respond to issues of competence, political suitability and all of these things.”

The appointment of MMDCEs is the sole preserve of the President, per Article 243 (1) of the 1992 Constitution.

At the moment, the government has been criticised for the lack of progress in appointing new MMDCEs eight months into a new administration.

In January, President Akufo-Addo directed all MMDCEs to remain at post until new ones are appointed.

This has since prompted a legal challenge.

The South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, dragged the government to court over the continuous stay of MMDCEs in office eight months after a new administration came into office.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo has no constitutional mandate to direct MMDCEs to remain in office in an acting capacity.

He also wants the court to order the acting MMDCEs to immediately vacate their post.

DSP Amponsah said the body of the deceased, identified as Francis Eleweh, 36, has been sent to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The deceased, Francis Eleweh, according to a relative, is survived by two children and a pregnant wife.

  • Herbal treatment for COVID-19 in the offing

The Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) at Mampong Akwapim in the Eastern Region has made progress in the development of a herbal medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.

The acting Executive Director of the centre, Dr Kofi Bobi Barimah, who disclosed this, said his outfit was fast developing the herbal medicine, and that it would bring great respite to Ghanaians when it was introduced.

He said since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the centre had been working at the laboratory to help find a remedy to the life-threatening virus.

Dr Barimah gave the hint in Accra last Wednesday during the launch of an immune-boosting food supplement called Thorntina-74 Mixture on the market.

“We have been working around the clock to get a herbal treatment for the COVID-19 and it will be out soon,” he said.

The herbal immune booster, which aims at providing support for the immune system to fight infectious diseases, is a distillate generated from three main plants — Moringa Oleifera, Spondias Mombin, commonly known as yellow mombin, and tetrapleura tetraptera (prekese).

    Increase in patients at CPMR

Dr Barimah said the increase in patient attendance at the CPMR to seek treatment attested to the strong belief in and efficacy of herbal medicine, saying that had encouraged the centre to work on developing a cure for the COVID-19 pandemic.

He revealed that since the outbreak of the pandemic, the medical facility at the centre had witnessed an increase in intake of patients from 80 to 140 per day.

He said over the years, due to its thoroughness and the promotion of the safe use of plant medicine, many people had turned to the centre for the treatment of viral and other forms of diseases.

“For the past 46 years since the inception of the centre, it has promoted the safe and responsible use of plant medicine through research and many have found it very helpful, for which reason they continue to patronise it,” he emphasised.

A medical herbalist of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Albert Wirekoh-Tawiah, who was part of the team that developed the Thorntina-74 immune booster, said the mixture had been prepared with the best herbal products to stand the test of time.

“This herbal solution contains an anticarcinogenic and an immunomodulator that prevents cancerous cells and prevents bacterial from easily affecting the system,” he explained.

A scientific officer of the Ghana Standards Authority, Dr Kenneth Agbodza, said his outfit had proved the efficacy of the mixture and encouraged all to utilise it for its good effects.

A biomedical and public health researcher, Dr Richard Eghan, called for a collaborative effort between herbal medicine and synthetic medicine to enable the best form of treatment for patients.

“There is the need for a scientific integration of natural or herbal medicine and synthetic ones for effective healing,” he noted.

    Diagnostics Herbal Clinic

The Managing Director of the Diagnostic Herbal Clinic, originators of the medicine, Mr Yaw Owusu Gyapong, said the immune booster was developed as a response to his own need for an immune booster to promote his general health and help find a solution to the threat posed by the COVID-19 in particular.

“The knowledge that people with a stronger immune system are able to fight and survive the COVID-19 drove me to go back to the laboratory, and after comprehensive research, came up with the Thorntina-74 Immune Booster,” he explained.

He urged Ghanaians to pay attention to their health and personal well-being and encouraged them to trust the efficacy of natural herbal medicine which had been developed from trusted sources.

Three Ghanaians who have already tried the medicine attested to its efficacy and encouraged Ghanaians to patronise it.

    The CPMR

The Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR), formerly called the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine (CSRPM), based at Mampong-Akwapim, was established by the Government of Ghana in 1975 as a result of the dream and vision of Dr Oku Ampofo, a renowned allopathic medical practitioner.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the centre has received many herbal products and plants to be tested and certified as having the potential to cure the disease or at least alleviate symptoms.

  • CSIR-INSTI develops Kuafo Market Place app to improve food security

Post-harvest losses account for 30 to 40 per cent of food wastage in Ghana, according to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The weak connection between farmers and buyers has largely been blamed for this situation.

Fortunately, a mobile and web application seeks to solve that challenge.

The Kuafo MarketPlace, has been developed by the Institute for Scientific and Technological Information of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-INSTI).

Kuafo is an online platform for farmers, agro-input shops and marketers to sell their goods and services.

There are two versions; an online version and a mobile app which is available on Google Playstore.

The App developed through the Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) programme, it is meant to prevent fraud and establish trackability.

A user should be a member of a registered Farmer-Based Organization (FBO) or be verified by the platform managers to be able to advertise on the platform.

The application also has a feature that enables prospective buyers to directly contact the seller of any commodity before any transaction can be agreed upon.

The main aim of this deliverable was to find out how research work impacts economically.

  • Crackdown as South Sudan braces for anti-government rallies

South Sudan security forces have arrested seven people, including a top religious figure, a civil society organization said Saturday, as rights groups warn of a widening crackdown on critics in the East African nation.

The arrests, which police denied, come ahead of planned nationwide protests organized by the People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA), which has called for the country’s leadership to step down.

They were detained because of alleged links with the PCCA, according to Jame David Kolok, chairperson of the South Sudan Civil Society Forum.

Four activists were picked up on Friday in the northwestern town of Wau, while two others were taken into custody along with a bishop in the southwestern city of Yei on Wednesday, Kolok told AFP.

The authorities “are accusing both the activists and the bishop of having possession of information that is attributed to the (PCCA) coalition”, he said.

    “This crackdown should stop”

But a spokesman for the South Sudan police denied the detentions.

“We have not arrested anybody,” Major General Daniel Justine told AFP.

A heavy police presence has been deployed in parts of the capital Juba this weekend, he said, urging citizens not to take part in Monday’s protest, branded by authorities as “illegal”.

“We have just appealed to the public not to come out so (the demonstration) will not take place,” Justine said.

He warned that police will “take legal measures” against anyone who defies the protest ban.

The latest detentions follow a series of arrests in recent weeks.

On Friday, security officials briefly detained three journalists and shut down their radio station in eastern Jonglei state.

Two prominent activists were arrested earlier this month for joining the PCCA, a broad-based coalition of activists, academics, lawyers, and former government officials.

The PCCA this month issued a declaration saying they have “had enough” after 10 years of independence marked by armed conflict, escalating insecurity, hunger, and political instability.

The world’s newest nation has struggled with civil war, famine, and chronic political and economic crisis since celebrating its hard-fought independence from Sudan in 2011.

  • Cameroon’s main port city battles mounting flood peril

Douala was plunged into darkness, but cries pierced the silent night: the water was rising. Alerted by the neighbours, Hummel put some of his belongings to safety and hurriedly sent the children away. A few minutes later, the blackish liquid invaded the house.

In mid-August, like every year during the rainy season, the informal neighbourhood of Makèpè-Missoké was invaded by water in the heart of Cameroon’s economic capital. Under the effect of global warming, floods are becoming more and more frequent in this port city of more than three million inhabitants, which is constantly expanding.

“Burned-out TV, burned-out refrigerator. Everything is wasted,” sighs Hummel Tsafack, 35.

“As soon as the thunder rumbles, we raise the beds. We are always afraid here. The water comes so quickly,” agrees his neighbour François, in his fifties. He still has a bitter memory of the flood of the summer of 2020 that paralyzed the city and devastated the neighbourhood.

In his small house soaked with humidity, all the household appliances are out of order. On the floor, the concrete is dotted with a few holes. “This place, we’ve already cemented it seven times. Every time it floods, it breaks and we have to start over.”

    Population growth

“We moved here because it was cheaper. We’re not going to move,” he warns. This precarious neighbourhood is in a flood zone that cannot be built on. But residents continue to pile in, driven by the lack of space in a city with a population growth rate of over 5.5% per year.

Each year, nearly 110,000 new city dwellers move into the megalopolis and the gap between supply and demand for available land is growing.

Douala is prone to flooding with nearly 250 km of rivers and heavy rainfall averaging 4,000 mm per year. It is located at the mouth of the Wouri River, on a low coastal plateau, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and is influenced by the tides.

Meteorological data for the last 20 years indicate a decrease in rainfall, which masks an increase in extreme events, and very violent rain episodes, causing flooding.

The temperature of the metropolis is increasing, as it is at the global level. According to the latest report of the UN climate experts (IPCC), coastal cities are in the front line of the climate crisis and risk being “wiped out by long-term flooding” and rising sea levels.

According to the IPCC, floods will displace an average of 2.7 million people in Africa and flood-related costs could increase tenfold by 2050, to $60 billion a year, in the 136 largest coastal cities.

    Plastic waste

In Makèpè-Missoké, plastic waste litters the river. “Look at all the garbage is thrown away by the residents. In addition to this, the soil is silting up and invasive plants are colonizing the riverbed. In case of heavy rains, the water overflows,” explains environmental specialist Didier Yimkwa.

To address the problem, the city has built about 40 kilometres of drains since 2012. Some at-risk, unsanitary and precarious neighbourhoods have also been upgraded to allow access to city services, especially those for waste collection.

But garbage and garbage are everywhere in Douala’s poor neighbourhoods, and the drains are often covered with plastic, preventing water from draining away.

“It is estimated that 30% of waste is lost in nature,” said Dr. Joseph Magloire Olinga, Deputy Director of Studies and Environmental Protection in Douala.

At the same time, another program has developed a hydrometeorological observatory to collect reliable local data on rainfall and prevent the risk of flooding. The participation of the French Development Agency and the World Bank is essential, says Olinga, who is in charge of monitoring the “Douala, sustainable city” project.

“The response is not enough,” he admits, however. “We need a serious alternative in terms of land to accommodate the population. This involves the densification of the city centre, and the construction of high-rise buildings, but some sectors are blocked by real estate developers who have bought the land and no longer want to sell it,” he explains.

Some flood-prone areas also continue to be allocated to real estate projects, which is the responsibility of the state.

In neighbourhoods like Makèpè-Missoké, the goal is to learn to live with the risk of flooding. “But it is certain that some inhabitants for whom the threat is too great will also have to leave,” concludes Mr. Olinga.

  • Nigerian travellers call for help as they face high isolation costs in Ghana

An exclusive video available to MyNigeria.com showed several Nigerians lamenting about how they were moved from the Kotoka International Airport in a convoy to an isolation center in East Legon, a suburb of Accra.

They identified the hotel as M Plaza Hotel.

The aggrieved travellers told MyNigeria.com that the Ghanaian authorities insist they tested positive for the Coronavirus in Accra despite taking and paying the mandated eighty thousand naira (N80,000) for a test in Lagos that proved they were negative.

According to Engineer Ezekiel Kachi, one of the isolated travellers, the process of testing was not convincing because they were not given a properly documented test result.

He explained further that the Ghanaian authorities lodged them in a hotel they could barely afford.

He said the daily 530 Ghana cedis or 52,000 naira was beyond their budget adding that the authorities failed to provide them with the option of a cheaper hotel knowing fully well the occupants will bear the cost.

“I’m Engineer Ezeh Kachi, from Nigeria, Igbo to be precise. I and my wife came here on the 25th of this month, which was on Wednesday for my honeymoon.

“Unfortunately, the Covid test the Ghanaians ran on me and my wife at the airport declared me positive and my wife negative. And I can’t understand because I ran a test in Nigeria and we were declared Covid negative, and that was why we embarked on the journey,” he explained.

In a WhatsApp voice note to MyNigeria.com, Mr Kachi confirmed to our reporter that he was released on Saturday, August 28, 2021, after his wife paid the hotel bill of one thousand seven hundred and twelve Ghana cedis (1,712GHS) for his three-night stay at M Plaza.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian man identified as Omoefe Ramsey has alleged that men of the Ghanaian Police Service have threatened to arrest him and his other colleagues after an altercation with a doctor at the center.

He said the policemen were invited at the behest of the doctor after a misunderstanding because they had questioned the approach of the medical team at the isolation center.

“The doctor threatened to arrest me and my friends because we were having a misunderstanding with him regarding his manner of approach. The police were here this morning, they said they will be taking us to the police station tomorrow after we have settled the hotel bills,” he said.

However, a high-ranking source within the Nigeria High Commission in Ghana has said the mission is doing its best to secure the release of Nigerian citizens who have “been held against their will” in the isolation center in Accra.

The top source who preferred to be anonymous said the mission is “already working with the authorities” to ensure the issue is settled.

Omoefe Ramsey tests result below show he tested negative for the virus before leaving Lagos:

  • Nine family members killed in US drone strike

Nine members of one family including six children were killed in a US drone strike targeting a vehicle in a residential neighborhood of Kabul, a relative of the dead told a local journalist working with CNN.

The US carried out a defensive airstrike in Kabul, targeting a suspected ISIS-K suicide bomber who posed an “imminent” threat to the airport, US Central Command said Sunday.

The youngest killed was a 2-year-old girl, according to a brother of one of those killed. They were “an ordinary family,” he said. “We are not ISIS or Daesh and this was a family home where my brothers lived with their families.”

Neighbors and witnesses at the scene of the drone strike in Kabul told CNN that several people were killed, including children.

“All the neighbors tried to help and brought water to put out the fire and I saw that there were five or six people dead,” a neighbor told CNN. “The father of the family and another young boy and there were two children. They were dead. They were in pieces. There were [also] two wounded.”

The US military acknowledged later Sunday that there are reports of civilian casualties following the strike.

“We know that there were substantial and powerful subsequent explosions resulting from the destruction of the vehicle, indicating a large amount of explosive material inside that may have caused additional casualties. It is unclear what may have happened, and we are investigating further,” Capt. Bill Urban, the spokesman for US Central Command, said in a statement.

“We would be deeply saddened by any potential loss of innocent life,” he added.

US forces have been racing to complete their evacuation operation before Tuesday’s deadline and under the threat of a new terror attack on Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. A suicide bombing outside the airport gates on Thursday killed 13 US service members and at least 170 others.

Sunday’s drone strike on a vehicle is the second by US forces targeting the ISIS-K terror group in the space of three days. A US official confirmed the location of the strike as being in Kabul’s Khaje Bughra neighborhood.

“U.S. military forces conducted a self-defense unmanned over-the-horizon airstrike today on a vehicle in Kabul, eliminating an imminent ISIS-K threat to Hamad Karzai International Airport,” said US CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Bill Urban.

“We are confident we successfully hit the target. Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material.”

The Taliban, which is now in control of Afghanistan, condemned the strike later Sunday, saying the US had violated the country’s sovereignty.

Bilal Kareemi, a Taliban spokesperson, told CNN that it was “not right to conduct operations on others’ soil” and that the US should have informed the Taliban. “Whenever the US conducts such operations, we condemn them,” he said.

    How the strike happened

The vehicle that was targeted by the US in Sunday’s airstrike on Kabul was next to a building and contained one suicide bomber, a US official told CNN.
It remains unclear if the vehicle was intended to be a car bomb, or if the suicide bomber was using it for transport. “It was loaded up and ready to go,” the official tells CNN.

A Pentagon official told CNN that according to initial reports, the target was a vehicle believed to be containing multiple suicide bombers. The threat could also have been a car bomb or someone with a suicide vest, he said, citing initial reports.

Urban said earlier Sunday the US military was “assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time” and would remain vigilant against potential future threats.

One man told a journalist working with CNN who visited the compound that “a rocket hit and six people were in there who have been killed. There was a car inside.” The journalist was not allowed to enter the compound.

Another man said that he heard the sound of a rocket and gained access to the scene from a neighbor’s house. “First we managed to remove a 3- to the 4-year old child. The fire and smoke had engulfed the whole area,” he said.

He added that “three people were inside the car” and three others were outside the car. The injured, who included children, were taken to the hospital, he said.

US President Joe Biden said Saturday that military commanders had advised that “another terrorist attack on Kabul’s airport is “highly likely in the next 24-36 hours,” and the US Embassy in Kabul warned all US citizens to leave the airport area immediately.

The White House said Sunday morning that about 2,900 people were evacuated from Kabul from 3 a.m. ET Saturday to 3 a.m. ET Sunday. Those evacuations were carried out by 32 US military flights and nine coalition flights.
The mission is clearly winding down, with fewer people brought out than during the same time period on preceding days.

Biden traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Sunday to mourn with the families of the 13 US service members killed in Thursday’s attack as their bodies were brought back to US soil.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the 13 would be remembered as heroes. “These men and women made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live,” he said.

ISIS in Khorasan, known as ISIS-K, has claimed that an ISIS militant carried out the suicide attack, but provided no evidence to support the claim. US officials have said the group was likely behind the bombing.

On Saturday, the Pentagon said two “high profile” ISIS targets had been killed and another injured in a US drone strike late Friday in Jalalabad, in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, in a retaliatory strike for Thursday’s attack.

    Vulnerable people left behind

After a desperate, two-week effort to evacuate their citizens and Afghan allies from the country following the Taliban’s seizure of power, Western governments now face the challenge of how to deal with an Islamist militant group they’ve spent the past two decades fighting.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he intends, alongside the United Kingdom, to submit a resolution to an emergency session of the UN Security Council (UNSC) that would focus on the creation of a “safe zone” in Kabul for Afghans leaving the country.

“Our draft resolution aims to define, under UN protection, a safe zone in Kabul that would allow humanitarian operations to continue,” Macron told French newspaper Journal du Dimanche, adding that he intends to “maintain pressure on the Taliban” in doing so. The UNSC session is due to convene Monday.

US: ‘We will use leverage’ in dealings with Taliban

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday that the Biden administration was committed to a “safe passage” of Americans and Afghans who helped the US government after the withdrawal deadline.

“August 31 is not a cliff. After August 31, we believe that we have substantial leverage to hold the Taliban to its commitments to allow safe passage for American citizens, legal permanent residents, and the Afghan allies who have travel documentation to come to the United States,” Sullivan told CNN.

“We will use that leverage to the maximum extent and we will work with the rest of the international community to make sure the Taliban does not falter on these commitments.”

Roughly 250 Americans who are attempting to leave Afghanistan remain in the country, according to new figures from a US State Department spokesperson. About 50 evacuations have taken place in the past day, bringing the total number of American citizens evacuated to 5,500.

The US State Department, along with governments from numerous other countries, released a statement Sunday saying they would hold the Taliban to their promises that they would allow people to leave the country after August 31.

“We will continue issuing travel documentation to designated Afghans, and we have the clear expectation of and commitment from the Taliban that they can travel to our respective countries,” the statement said.

    Wife: ‘They will kill him’

For those at risk in Kabul and elsewhere, the picture appears bleak.
Florence, a Frenchwoman living in a Paris suburb, believed her Afghan husband of 18 years would fly out of Kabul to safety on Thursday. Florence’s husband was in Afghanistan for his father’s funeral and had been due to fly out on a commercial flight on August 22.

But the airport suicide bombing left him stranded in the Afghan capital. France wrapped up its evacuation mission on Friday leaving Florence, whose last name CNN is not using for safety reasons, terrified for her husband’s fate.

“My husband is completely lost, he’s stressed, he’s scared, he doesn’t know which way he’ll come back to France. Now he’s thinking maybe to take the road,” Florence said.

Her husband is just one of potentially thousands of people still in Afghanistan who fear their lives could be in danger under Taliban rule, both Afghans and other nationalities.

Despite having a French residency permit and being on the French foreign ministry’s passenger list for evacuation, he never made it past US forces guarding the airport gates in Kabul, she said.

He is terrified at what will befall his country under Taliban rule.
“It’s horrible when you go back to the same conditions as 20 years ago because when you don’t know, you are just living the moment but when you know exactly who these people are, what will happen to you, it’s much more terrible,” she said.

Her husband also fears for his own safety, as being found in possession of the French documents that could give him a way out represents a massive danger in itself.

“It’s already a huge problem if they understand that he is married to a French citizen, there is not one minute of his life still, there is not one minute of his life possible anymore, they will kill him,” Florence said.

Johnson: ‘We will use every lever we have’

Britain concluded its own evacuation mission from Afghanistan on Saturday, with its last remaining diplomatic staff, pulled out alongside military forces.

While nearly 15,000 people were brought to safety, according to the UK ambassador to Kabul, the head of the UK’s armed forces, Gen. Nick Carter, told the BBC that people eligible to be brought outnumbering in the “high hundreds” had been left behind.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sunday that diplomatic recognition of the Taliban as Afghanistan’s “new regime” would be dependent on the organization’s actions, stressing that Britain would “engage with the Taliban, not on the basis of what they say, but what they do.”

“If the new regime in Kabul wants diplomatic recognition, or to unlock the billions that are currently frozen, they will have to ensure safe passage for those who wish to leave the country, to respect the rights of women and girls, and to prevent Afghanistan from, again, becoming an incubator for global terror,” Johnson said.

“We will use every lever we have political, economic, diplomatic to help the people of Afghanistan and to protect our own country from harm,” he added. The UK embassy will now relocate to Doha, Qatar.

Johnson added that the UK government would increase its development assistance to Afghanistan to £286 million (about $394 million).

At the Vatican, Pope Francis said he was following the situation in Afghanistan “with great concern” as he delivered his Angelus Prayer, and thanked those working for peace and to help people in need.

  • Its a gift to have him Pochettino hails Mbappe amidst Real Madrid transfer rumours

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Kylian Mbappe after the forward scored twice in a 2-0 win over Reims in Ligue 1.

Despite links to Real Madrid, the France international started the match on Sunday, justifying his coach’s decision with a headed opener from Angel Di Maria’s cross and following it up with a close-range finish on the back of Achraf Hakimi’s break.

Nevertheless, uncertainty remains over Mbappe’s future amid back-to-back bids from Los Blancos and with the end of his contract looming next summer – but now his coach has led a glowing tribute from staff and players alike after another match-winning performance.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino told Amazon Prime: “He is our player. But you know the business, it’s full of rumours. Our president and our director are very clear. He is here with us, and we are happy with him. He is an important player, and it is a gift to have him with us.”

Marquinhos, who was making his first start of the season, added: “We don’t even try to ask him about his future. He has his goals, but if we think about ourselves, we want him to stay. And if he stays, he will help us a lot.

“Our attack is magic, but he does not make us forget the others. It is important to have an efficient team. The season is long.”

Similarly, Marco Verratti said: “Of course I want him to stay. We like to play with the strongest. We didn’t discover Kylian today. He has been scoring a lot of goals for a few years. He is a phenomenon; we are very happy with him.”

  • Russian police take 28 students at photo exhibit into custody

Twenty-eight students were taken into custody by Russian police during a photography exhibition at a park in St Petersburg, according to the human rights portal ovdinfo.org.

The young people were taken to the police station on Saturday night and held for hours; two of them had to stay overnight.

The reason for the detentions given by police officers was that they had allegedly received complaints. Participants reported that officers were particularly interested in two works that dealt with the Orthodox church as well as the Russian police.

It was not clear if the students will now face punishment.

The officers’ actions were criticized by activists as disproportionate. The magazine Doxa quoted one participant as saying that the exhibition wasn’t a political event.

“Broadly speaking, the people were having a picnic and hanging up their photos there,” the magazine quoted them as saying.

  • EU wants to attach conditions for border protection aid in Greece

The European Commission plans to make further financial support to protect the European Union’s external borders in Greece conditional on protecting human rights, said a commissioner.

“We have said that such a payment should be linked to the establishment of a mechanism to monitor fundamental rights,” European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson told Der Spiegel news magazine.

She said a working group had been established and that progress was expected in this area.

Greek border guards have repeatedly been accused of illegally pushing back migrants who try to reach the country by crossing the Mediterranean, sending them back to Turkey.

The Greek government denies that illegal pushbacks are taking place.

At the height of the refugee crisis six years ago, more than 850,000 migrants crossed the Mediterranean from Turkey into Greece – and the European Union – within the space of a year, with much-fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East.

Only 1,800 people have reached Greece by boat this year, according to the UN Refugee Agency’s data up to August 22.

Some 45 per cent of those fleeing were from Afghanistan, according to recent figures.

  • Messi makes PSG debut in Ligue 1 clash against Reims

Lionel Messi has made his Paris Saint-Germain debut, coming on for Neymar after 66 minutes in a clash against Reims.

It is the first time that Messi has played a competitive club match for a team other than Barcelona.

He arrived at PSG earlier in August after Barcelona were forced to release him for financial reasons.

Previously in the game, Kylian Mbappe had given PSG the first-half lead, with the forward netting despite rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid in the days leading up to the game.

He had netted a second moments before Messi came on, making it 2-0 for the visitors.

The much-anticipated moment came just one minute after Mbappe’s second goal, as Messi came on for his former Barca teammate Neymar.

Messi’s performance was relatively low key as there were no major moments in favour of his side following his arrival. He took up a position as a No.10 playing behind Mbappe and linked well with the centre-forward.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino said of Messi: “He’s been good. I’m very happy to see him make his debut. It was important for him. He is far from his best form, but he is training very well.

“He will be better after the [international] break. We expect the best from him.”

Messi signed a two-year deal with PSG at the start of August after his 21-year stint with Barcelona came to an end.

The Argentine, though, was not initially in a fit state to play with his new club. He had been out of action for around a month when he joined PSG, having spent time on holiday in Miami and Ibiza following the end of the Copa America, in which he led Argentina to their first international title since 1993.

Messi has only been back in training for a couple of weeks and has been short of match fitness, which resulted in his debut being delayed.

He will hope to make his first start for the club after the international break when PSG play newly promoted but undefeated Clermont at Parc des Princes.

The Vice-Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Coaches Association, Osman Seidu, has alleged that some top Ghanaian journalists tried bribing Mas-Ud Didi Dramani to select some players after he was appointed head coach of the Under 20 team.

According to him, there was an attempt to influence the retired Ghana international football player to select some players but he refused to do so.

He said the attempt came from all corners but Ghanaian journalists topped the chat of persons who had wanted to bribe the coach to do their bidding.

He was speaking to Isaac Worlanyo Wallace on Total Sports Review on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.

He was responding to a question on whether Ghanaian coaches take bribes to influence their decision in selecting players, especially for the national team.

In his response, he said he has not personally seen a coach accepting a bribe but he has seen one who refused a bribe.

He mentioned Didi Dramani, eulogizing him as a coach with integrity and credibility.

“I know of a coach who has not accepted a bribe before. When he managed the U-20 team, there were several people who attempted to bribe him but he refused. Some of the people who were leading this were journalists. They will come and tell you to select a player so they would commend you on their shows,” he added.

He underscored the need for Ghanaians to fight the canker of corruption in Ghanaian football.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in 2016 announced Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as the permanent head coach of the national U-20 male team, the Black Satellites.

  • ACEP calls on the government to re-examine the Agyapa investment deal

The Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) has called on the government to re-examine its decision on the Agyapa investment deal.

Although the agreement would not affect the 20 per cent that goes into the Mineral Development Fund (MDF), ACEP emphasized that the government should consider other investment models.

A Policy Lead, Climate Change, and Energy Transition at ACEP, Mr Charles Ofori, said this in Tarkwa in the Western Region during a forum to sensitize stakeholders in mining communities on the Agyapa investment deal and its potential implications on the local level funding and governance.

The forum was attended by traditional authorities, assembly members, traders, Persons With Disabilities, media and civil society organizations.

He stated that “generally the deal is assigning almost every gold we have in the country including; those that are going under exploration and these are some of the things we are worried about”

Mr Ofori added that “there are so many factors that would impact on our gains or losses, for instance, the amount of Gold we are offloading to Agyapa, the duration of the contract, the shareholding structure how much we are receiving as front payment, the price of gold and the return on the investment which cannot be controlled by the government”.

He, however, said there were measures the government could have put in place to ensure Ghanaians achieved the optimum benefit from the Agyapa investment deal.

“If you enter into an agreement that restrict you to do certain things that limits your flexibility that will not help so a lot of things in the agreement needs to be relooked at and all of these could have emerged if the government had done extensive consultation on the matter. ” Mr Ofori said.

He noted that “the Agyapa investment deal is an important thing that we all have to take note of and it is something that can change the fortunes of this country so we need to make the right decision”

Mr Ofori also entreated the government to give thought to investment models that can generate a better value and maintain the flexibility to control the industry’s policy evolution.

Many of the participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency after the forum, commended the organizers for the event and appealed to the government to take a firm stand on the Agyapa investment deal.

  • Too much pressure coaching in Ghana – Kwasi Appiah

Former Ghana head coach James Kwasi Appiah has revealed he has decided to take a sabbatical away from the dugout.

The 61-year-old has been away from the limelight following his last job with the Black Stars, with whom he has had two spells.

At club level, he has coached Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko and Sudanese outfit Al-Khartoum.

“Coaching isn’t easy in Ghana, and it contains much pressure. Ghanaians always seek results, and it gives you the coach much pressure,” Appiah told Rainbow Sports.

“I can decide to come back into coaching any time but am not willing to come in now. It may be a call to work for the Football Association as a technical director, but I think I need to rest.

“I have decided to step aside and rest from coaching now. If I want to coach, there are about 10 clubs who are inquiring about my services. I think I need to rest to gain my strength with my age now.

“I am independent, and I haven’t received any offer from any club in Ghana. Samatex and Bibiani Gold Stars haven’t sent me any offer, and I think it’s just a rumour.”

After a seven-year spell as Ghana assistant trainer, Appiah stepped up to the position of head coach in 2012, guiding the Black Stars to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Under his tutelage at the continental gathering, the four-time champions suffered a semi-final elimination following a defeat to Burkina Faso.

A year later, there was another disappointment for Appiah, this time at the World Cup, as Ghana crashed out at the group stage. It was the first time the West Africans failed to go past the group stage of the tournament, an outcome that ultimately led to his exit.

After coaching Al Khartoum between 2014 and 2017, the coach returned for a second stint with the Black Stars, leading the national team to the 2019 Afcon tournament.

His third championship with the Black Stars ended in a Round of 16 elimination, after which his contract with the Black Stars was not renewed.

  • I pray Akufo-Addo will complete 111 hospitals by end of 2024 – Kwamena Duncan

Former Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has slammed the opposition National Democratic Congress for doubting the Akufo-Addo administration’s commitment to build and complete 111 hospitals in the country.

The President, cutting sod for the project in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, August 17, promised Ghanaians his government will construct 111 hospitals, of which 88 will be completed in 18 months.

”So far sites have been identified for 88 of the 111 hospitals, and after cutting the sod, work on the other 87 sites will also commence today [Tuesday].”

“The acquisition of the remaining 13 sites will be completed shortly for work to begin. Each hospital is being constructed at a cost of $16.88 million, i.e. $12.88 million for construction and $4 million for medical equipment, and all the hospitals are to be completed in 18 months and works will begin on the regional and other hospitals in the latter part of the year,” he said.

But the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have little faith in the President as they believe he is only paying lip service to the Agenda 111 project.

Some members of the opposition party accused the government of spending over GH¢ 600 million before cutting sod for the project.

The NDC 2020 Presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama also claims the project is “only an afterthought that suddenly they realized that they must be doing some infrastructure and Agenda 111 has been conjured with no transparency as to how the money for the projects are going to be procured”.

“Government should avert its mind and try to finish some of those projects including some of those that they themselves have initiated,” he added.

But Kwamena Duncan is the least surprised about the NDC claims as he alluded to some disparaging comments that the party passed about the President’s free SHS policy stating it couldn’t be done, yet the policy has been effectively implemented despite their opposing views.

He described the NDC as an “impossible party” – to wit, the party doesn’t believe anything is possible to do.

”This is not surprising because we have a party in this country that only thinks we can’t do it. It (NDC) is an impossible party.”

Kwamena Duncan was of a strong opinion that just as the President made the free SHS possible, Agenda 111 will also materialize.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, he offered prayers for the President saying, “my prayer is that, by the close of 2024 when Akufo-Addo will be handing over to an NPP President-elect, we would have completed all the 111 – 88 of them or so district hospitals. That is my prayer”.

He believed the President and his government aren’t moved by the opposition but focused on the Agenda 111 which will surely come to fruition.

  • Coronavirus: GRA donates PPEs to 160 selected schools

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Wednesday donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to 160 selected schools to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The items are 640 handwashing units, 480 gallons of liquid soap, and 320 packs of tissue.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Deputy Minister of Education, received the items and presented them to Professor Kwasi Opoku- Amankwa, the Director-General of Ghana Education Service, for onward distribution to the schools.

Reverend Ammishaddai Owusu- Amoah, the Commissioner-General, GRA said the gesture was part of the Authority’s corporate social responsibility to respond to the needs of the students in protecting them from the New Delta Variant of the pandemic.

He said the Authority, over the years, had supported schools in diverse ways to improve teaching and learning to help in the development of the country.

The Commissioner-General said even though the Authority aimed to collect revenue for the country’s development, it was necessary to respond to societal needs for national growth.

He said the gesture would endure, adding that the Authority would continue to partner with the Ministry of Education to support underserved schools in the country.

Rev Owusu-Amoah advised the students to take their lessons seriously and observe the COVID-19 health protocols to protect themselves from the virus.

Rev Fordjour commended the Authority for the gesture and appealed to other corporate organisations to support in curbing the virus.

He said since the outbreak of the pandemic, the government had made huge investments through the purchase of vaccines and provision of PPEs to protect the lives of the citizenry.

The gesture, the Minister, said would imbue in the students the civic duty of paying tax and remaining law-abiding for the development of the country.

He said the government would soon deploy the COVID-19 Tracker to monitor and track cases of the virus for the prompt response and called for stakeholder’s support for the initiative to be successful.
