A recent video surfaced on social media, showcasing former President John Dramani Mahama actively engaged in farming activities on his expansive land in Yapei, located in the Savannah Region.
The footage, shared on the Facebook page of National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker, Beatrice Annan, depicts Mahama operating a tractor alongside a cultivator on the arid terrain of his farm.
Although Mahama’s venture into farming was announced last year upon acquiring a significant tract of land in the Central Gonja District, his hands-on involvement was captured in this recent video.
GhanaWeb investigations reveal that Mahama visited the farm earlier this month, temporarily stepping away from his hectic political campaign schedule ahead of the 2024 elections.
Mahama has consistently advocated for the modernization of agriculture to bolster Ghana’s economy and ensure food security. In his 2023 National Farmers’ Day message, he reiterated the National Democratic Congress’s commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector.
He emphasized the party’s dedication to supporting large-scale commercial agricultural production and outlined plans for establishing Farmers Service Centres nationwide to facilitate access to credit and inputs.
Furthermore, Mahama proposed the introduction of agro-processing units across all regions to add value to agricultural products and create additional opportunities for farmers.
Expressing gratitude to farmers for their pivotal role in the economy, Mahama pledged unwavering support for their welfare and success under the next NDC government.
In a nighttime demonstration on April 17, 2024, hundreds of protesters flooded the streets of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, to voice their frustration against ongoing power supply challenges.
The protest, known as the “dumsor vigil,” saw participants carrying placards expressing discontent with the erratic power supply and frequent blackouts, locally known as ‘dumsor.’
Videos and images circulated by local media outlets depicted a sizable crowd marching through the streets, some holding lanterns and candles to illuminate the nighttime protest.
Of particular note is the demonstration’s location in Kumasi, a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), adding significance to the event.
“The protest dubbed ‘dumsor vigil’ is to express their displeasure and urge government to address the root causes of the power issues and take swift action,” captioned Accra-based Citi FM on social media.
Traders voiced concerns about the adverse impact of recent power cuts on their businesses, highlighting the tangible effects of the ongoing energy crisis.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the power distributor, has faced mounting pressure to publish a load-shedding timetable in response to the public outcry.
However, ECG has attributed the outages to overloaded transformers, rejecting claims of implementing a load-shedding programme.
This stance was contradicted by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which asserted that ECG’s outages constituted a form of load shedding that had not been adequately communicated to the public.
In response, PURC imposed fines on ECG’s board members, underscoring the regulatory pushback against the power distributor’s handling of the crisis.
Retired Commissioner of Police (COP), Nathan Kofi Boakye, popularly known as Commander One, has unveiled some behind-the-scenes events preceding the announcement of the 2016 presidential election results.
Boakye, who served as the Ashanti Region Commander at the time, disclosed that it was the intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, that facilitated the announcement of the election results.
Speaking in an interview with Opemsuo Radio on April 16, 2024, Boakye elaborated on Otumfuo’s role in engaging all stakeholders to ensure peace prevailed.
He stated, “In fact, when the EC could not announce the result of the 2016 election, it was His Majesty who intervened. It was him (the Otumfuo) who came in for Charlotte Osei to be able to announce the results, I’m telling you plainly.”
Boakye emphasized the significance of the talks that occurred at the Manhyia Palace, urging Ghanaians to appreciate and pray for the Asantehene‘s long life.
He concluded by reiterating the importance of respecting the Asantehene, stating, “I’m telling you, if you know the level of talks that went on for the announcement of the results of the 2016 elections… I can’t disclose everything. So, we should give the Asantehene, the respect due him.”
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has openly criticized the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Nsiah, for his correspondence with the presidency regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
Ablakwa voiced his concerns on Metro TV’s “Good Morning Ghana” on April 12, 2024, while discussing the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, the subsequent response from the Presidency, and the Clerk of Parliament’s recent letter to the president’s office.
In a letter dated April 10, 2024, Clerk Cyril Nsiah contacted Nana Bediatuo Asante, the Executive Secretary to the president, to determine a suitable time for presenting the contentious bill to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
This was in response to a letter from the Office of the President signed by Bediatuo Asante, requesting that the bill not be sent to the President until suits filed in court against the bill have been duly addressed.
In his letter, Nsiah stated, “I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your Letter No. OPS 140/1/24/235 dated 18th March 2024, on the above subject matter and received in my Office on 19th March 2024.”
He further noted, “I have taken note of the contents of the letter, particularly the text in the last paragraph, which states that ‘In the circumstances, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the Bill to the President until matters before the Supreme Court are resolved.’”
“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your Office on when to present the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024, to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992,” Nsiah concluded. The unfolding situation raises questions about the balance of power and the independence of Ghana’s legislative body.
Ablakwa, however, found the Clerk’s approach particularly troubling, saying “I feel offended by this letter” and contrary to constitutional procedures. He vowed to seek clarification from the Clerk’s office once Parliament reconvenes.
“I don’t know what the strategy is, but I feel offended by this letter, particularly the third paragraph. Are you subjecting our constitutional mandate to the whims and caprices of the president or Secretary to the president? What happened to our constitutional independence? These are constitutional matters,” Ablakwa stated.
“So now Nana Bediatuo Asante is going to dictate to Parliament when we should communicate with the executive? When we should move forward with our mandate? What is the meaning of this? When the house resumes, the clerk better have some explanation because we will take him on,” he added.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly criticized the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Ansah, regarding his correspondence with the presidency concerning the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-LGBT bill.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme, Ablakwa expressed concern over the approach taken by the Clerk.
Describing the action as offensive, Ablakwa accused the Clerk of deviating from constitutional norms by sending the letter to the presidency.
He pledged to seek clarification from the Clerk’s office once Parliament resumes session.
“I don’t know what the strategy is, but I feel offended by this letter, particularly the third paragraph. Are you subjecting our constitutional mandate to the whims and caprices of the president or Secretary to the president? What happened to our constitutional independence? These are constitutional matters.
“So now Nana Bediatuo Asante is going to dictate to Parliament when we should communicate with the executive? When we should move forward with our mandate? What is the meaning of this? When the house resumes, the clerk better have some explanation because we will take him on,” Ablakwa asserted.
On April 10, 2024, Cyril Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament, wrote to Nana Bediatuo Asante, Executive Secretary to the president, seeking clarity on when to transmit the controversial bill to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In his letter dated Wednesday, April 10, Mr. Nsiah acknowledged receipt of Mr. Bediatuo Asante’s letter and expressed his intention to transmit the Bill as per Article 106(7) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
“I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your Letter No. OPS 140/1/24/235 dated 18th March 2024, on the above subject matter and received in my Office on 19th March 2024,” Mr. Nsiah wrote.
“I have taken note of the contents of the letter, particularly the text in the last paragraph, which states that ‘In the circumstances, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the Bill to the President until matters before the Supreme Court are resolved.”
“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your Office on when to present the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024, to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992,” the Clerk noted.
Ramadan celebrations took a tragic turn as one person lost their life, and another was severely injured in a motorcycle accident in Kasoa, Central Region.
The incident occurred when a car collided with the motorbike, resulting in the immediate death of the pillion rider, while the rider sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kasoa Polyclinic.
Superintendent Hannah Agyei, Central East Regional MTTD Commander, confirmed the fatality and urged Muslim youth to exercise caution to prevent further accidents during the festive period.
Highlighting the importance of responsible behavior, Superintendent Agyei emphasized that maintaining composure would safeguard lives and contribute positively to nation-building.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, with the deceased’s body deposited at the morgue pending further procedures.
Managing Director of the State Transport Company, and former Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, last year expressed embarrassment over being confronted with past promises made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that remain unfulfilled.
During an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana in June 2022, when host Randy Abbey questioned him about his feelings regarding these unfulfilled promises, Akomea admitted, “Absolutely; it’s embarrassing”, emphasizing that these were not mere propaganda but commitments the party had pledged to fulfill.
Akomea elaborated on his discomfort, stating, “I mean, when I come and sit here, and you play pronouncements that have been made, I am embarrassed because these are not propaganda; these are things we said we’d do.”
He also noted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)could be held to similar standards, suggesting a pattern of unmet promises across parties.
Akomea however, distanced himself from personal accountability for the party’s promises, explaining that specific individuals in charge of various sectors should be questioned.
“It’s a very simple explanation: you have to ask those who are in charge, because the things that we said we’ll do, there are sectors and there are people in charge,” he said.
Recounting an incident where he was personally held accountable, Akomea shared, “You know, somebody sent me something [clip] last week and I laughed. He said: ‘Nana Akomea said the government was going to pay rent and now we can’t find him; we’ll do aluta against him because we can’t pay our rent’.”
Nana Akomea clarified that such promises were made by the party, not him personally, and directed inquiries about the rent promise to the responsible ministry.
“I didn’t communicate those things on my behalf. This is what the party says it will do, so, probably, if you want to know what’s happening to the rent promise, you have to go to the ministry in charge of rent, in charge of housing,” he noted.
The interview highlights the challenges political figures face when their party’s promises come under scrutiny and the public’s demand for accountability.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, host of the morning show on Angel FM, has issued a heartfelt apology to the Nungua Traditional Council, the people of Nungua, and Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, the overlord of Gadangme State.
In a public statement, Afrifa-Mensah expressed remorse for his previous comments, explaining that he was unaware of Gborbu-Wulomo’s status as the head of the Gadangme tribe when he made his remarks about an alleged marriage to a 12-year-old.
“If I claim to be a fighter for human rights and one day I wake up to the news that an MC officiating a programme says even my lord, Osei Tutu (Asantehene) is marrying a 12-year-old child, I would be so angry and I would say it the way I said it. However, at the time I was speaking on the matter, my understanding of Gborbu-Wulomo was that he was someone like Kwaku Bonsam [a fetish priest] because sitting here I didn’t know the Wulomo was the head of the Gadangme tribe. I thought it was the Mantse who was the head,” Afrifa-Mensah explained.
He continued, “So my understanding of who Gborbu-Wulomo was at the time of making those pronouncements was not that he was the overlord of the Gadangme Traditional Council…. So every Gadangme who is angered has a right to be angry.”
Acknowledging his misunderstanding, Afrifa-Mensah extended his apology to the Gadangme community and Gborbu-Wulomo, emphasizing his respect for tradition and customs.
“So I will base on that and apologise to the Gadangme community and Gborbu-Wulomo that per the misconception which the MC made the utterances was what I based on to make those statements in anger. I have respect for tradition and customs but at no point would we hide behind traditions and customs to do the wrong thing. That will not happen today or tomorrow, even if you put a gun to my head I will say it,” he stated.
The Ga Traditional Council had previously summoned Afrifa-Mensah to appear before them regarding his comments. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse’s Palace on Friday, April 12, 2024.
“I have been instructed by the Elders of the Nungua Traditional Area to invite you to the palace concerning the false, unsavoury, and desecrating statements you made against Nuumo Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, Overlord of the Gadangme State, and King Odaifio Welentsi III, Paramount Chief of Nungua Traditional Area, during a radio show at Angel FM,” it read.
The invitation, issued by the elders of the Nungua Traditional Area, emphasized the importance of according the summons with utmost respect and noted that the outcome of the meeting could have significant implications for both parties involved.

WAPCAS – GHANA-WEST AFRICA PROGRAM TO COMBAT AIDS AND STI
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP)
The Ghana-West Africa Programme to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAS) in collaboration with the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NACP) and Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), is requesting proposals from qualified firms or Consultants for the first round of:
BIO-BEHAVIOURAL SURVEY (BBS) AMONG PERSONS WHO USE DRUGS (PUDS) AND MAPPING AND SIZE ESTIMATION OF PUD.
A) Background
A rapid assessment of people who use and inject drugs was conducted in four regions in Ghana between October and December 2021. Findings from the assessment reveal key quantitative and qualitative data on the challenging conditions for people who use and inject drugs. The prevalence of HIV among PUDS stood at 2.5%, surpassing the national average. The rate was particularly higher in females at 12.3%, while women involved in Sex Work recorded a prevalence rate of 17.7%. Hepatitis C was found to be at 6%, with two clusters showing a 12% prevalence, while Hepatitis B prevalence was 4.5%, higher among males.
The National HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan (NSP) 2021-2025 aims to achieve epidemic control and the UNAIDS fast-track targets of 95-95- 95 by 2025, prioritising prevention, treatment, and care programmes for key affected populations (KPS). It also indicates the conduct of bio- behavioural surveys (BBS) among KP populations every three to four years.
This BBS for people who use drugs (PUD) will be the first ever conducted for PUD in Ghana, following up on the rapid assessment conducted in 2021. Funding for the study is provided by the Global Fund and WAPCAS is collaborating with NACOC and NACP.
This RFP seeks technical expertise for the conduct of mapping and population size estimation (MPSE) and bio-behavioural survey (BBS) among persons who use drugs (PUD) in all the 16 regions of Ghana. The objectives are to measure HIV prevalence, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Hepatitis B & C, related risk behaviour, and access to prevention and care services, among others. The results of the MPSE and BBS will contribute to the definition of current trends of HIV and co-infections, the evaluation of national indicators and KP strategy implementation and facilitate tracking of coverage of the Global Fund New Funding Grant Cycle 7 KP project. Furthermore, the studies will generate critical data for policy decisions to inform both strategic and operational planning and resource allocation, ensuring proper targeting of comprehensive prevention, treatment and care services for PUDS.
B) Objectives of the Study
The overall objective of the mapping, size estimation and BBS is to collect data to identify priority locations for implementing interventions to ensure optimum coverage of services and to assess the prevalence of HIV and other STIs and behavioural risk factors among PUDs and their intimate partners.
The study will be implemented in three components:
Pre-Survey/Formative Assessment (PSA)
PUD Population Mapping & Size Estimation
BBS among PUDS
Study duration

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially signed into law the Wildlife Resources Management Act, 2024 (Act 1115).
This significant legislation, sponsored by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, received parliamentary approval on 28th July, 2023, and was formally assented to by the President on 1st March 2024.
The Wildlife Resources Management Bill, which had languished in parliamentary deliberations for over 15 years, finally found its resolution in the Eighth Parliament’s approval last year.
This landmark decision marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s conservation efforts and underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the nation’s rich biodiversity.
Announcing the development, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, highlighted the far-reaching implications of the new law.
He emphasised its alignment with existing policies in the sector and its crucial role in implementing international conventions on wildlife, to which Ghana is a signatory.
Jinapor outlined key provisions of the Act, including the establishment of Community Resources Management Areas (CREMAs) to involve local communities in wildlife management.
Additionally, the legislation introduces a robust penalties regime for wildlife offences, aimed at deterring illegal activities and safeguarding Ghana’s precious wildlife resources.
Furthermore, the Act enshrines Ghana’s commitment to international wildlife conventions, such as the RAMSAR Convention, CITES, and the BONN Convention. By incorporating these global standards into national law, Ghana reaffirms its dedication to sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
Expressing his ministry’s dedication to the effective implementation of the Act, Jinapor underscored the importance of transparency, integrity, and good faith in wildlife management.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving and managing Ghana’s wildlife resources for the benefit of all citizens.
Former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, has unleashed scathing criticism against the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, accusing it of lacking clear guidelines for awarding scholarships and favouring politically connected individuals.
The allegations surfaced following an investigation conducted by The Fourth Estate, revealing instances where scholarships meant for financially disadvantaged students were instead granted to relatives of prominent political figures, including Freddie Blay, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and David Asante Apeatu, former Inspector General of Police.
One such case involved Gifty Oware-Mensah (formerly Oware-Aboagye), who received a government scholarship worth GBP18,450 to study at the University of Birmingham in 2020.
Notably, she secured the scholarship three years after assuming the role of Deputy Executive Director at the National Service Secretariat. Additionally, in the same year, she acquired Berry Ladies FC, a women’s football club competing in Ghana’s premier league.
Domelevo, speaking on JoyNews on April 8, 2024, stressed the importance of transparency and adherence to established guidelines in public service.
“In our audit report, one of our concerns was that according to the law, the monies should be given to the Scholarship Secretariat for them to administer, but then GETFund was administering it themselves.
“I am told that has changed, so the money has been given to the Scholarship Secretariat, who, from my point of view, is administering scholarships 24/7. But if this is how they are administering scholarships, then they are a complete waste. It is better if we scrap it. Not just waste; they are useless.
He lamented the absence of clear criteria to determine scholarship eligibility, calling for urgent reforms to ensure compliance with the law and fairness in the allocation process.
“I wish I had a harsher word for them because 24/7 that is what they do, and they have not been able to come up with any guidelines to determine who qualifies for this to ensure they are within the remit of the law,” myjoyonline.com quoted him to have said.
Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has finally revealed the reason behind his sudden resignation describing it as the wisest choice he has ever made.
Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, the Suame MP disclosed that his main objective was to prevent discord within the majority faction in Parliament.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized that he holds no regrets regarding his resignation and is fully committed to ensuring the success of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming 2024 election.
He stated, “The major project ahead of us is breaking the eight and the project that I believe in is getting [Dr. Mahamudu] Bawumia elected as the president of this country and I don’t want to be part of anything that will obstruct that or negatively impact that, I don’t want to be part of it. I don’t want to be the eye of the storm and so I think it was the best decision I took.”
Three individuals allegedly involved in the dissemination of a private video featuring broadcast journalist Serwaa Amihere are facing legal action by the Ghana Police Service.
The accused, identified as Edem Saviour Ketti, Candylove Kwakyewaa Ababio, and Henry Amponsah (also known as Henry Fitz), are charged with offences related to sexual extortion and the sharing of private visual content.
The charges include conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, as outlined in Section 23 (1) of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960 and the Cybersecurity Act 2020. They are also accused of sexual extortion under Section 66(1) of the Cybersecurity Act 2020.
According to court documents, the accused intentionally distributed prohibited visual recordings of Serwaa Amihere without her consent on social media platforms.
The incident gained attention when a video showing Serwaa Amihere in bed with a man, identified as Henry Fitz, circulated widely on social media. Initial speculation suggested the video was filmed before the man’s marriage in 2019.
Reports indicate that the ordeal began when Serwaa Amihere’s makeup artist received a demand for GH₵5,000 to prevent the circulation of explicit photos. Subsequent threats escalated, with the demand increasing to GH₵20,000.
Despite Amihere complying with the initial demand, the accused published the video. Following this, Amihere reported the matter to the authorities, resulting in the arrest of Edem Saviour Ketti. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend Henry Fitz, who remains at large as investigations continue.
Journalist Kevin Taylorhas disclosed what he believes to be the true motive behind Kwesi Nyantakyi’s recent outburst about an alleged blackmail attempt involving journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Taylor suggests that Nyantakyi’s grievances stem from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) supposed decision not to let him run unopposed in the upcoming by-election in Ejisu, following the death of Member of Parliament for the area, John Kumah.
“Painfully Nyantakyi requested to go unopposed in Ejisu, the NPP has refused to let him do that so he is angry now hence the name mentioning,” he wrote on X.
Nyantakyi in a recent interview on Onua TV, shed light on a purported bribery scandal, implicating one lawyer Kwame Djan, who is allegedly a lecturer at the University of Ghana.
Giving insights to incidents surrounding the Number 12 documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, that saw his downfall, Nyantakyi said, “Before the video was released, a former colleague at the GFA Exco, Adam Munkaila, took me to Anas’ lawyers, a certain Kwame Djan, a lecturer at Legon. I met him at his residence around Westland, and he told me Anas was his student and had informed him he needed $150,000 to kill the story. I had never been to his house before. I gave them $100,000, but they told me the amount was inadequate and later went ahead to release the video. After the video came out, I asked for a refund and even the refund was done in pieces. Today, they would bring $20,000, and the next day another $10,000. They were giving me stories, but eventually, I got everything back.”
According to Taylor, Nyantakyi’s claim is true. He is, as a result, currently facing attempts to have him keep quiet over the issue as it has the potential to jeopardise Kwame Djan’s Supreme Court appointment opportunities.
“It is true that Nyantekyi gave money to lawyer Kwame Djan. Lawyer Djan is currently begging Nyantakyi to keep quiet over the 100,000 USD. The reason why Djan is begging Nyantekyi is that Nana Addo has appointed him in waiting to the Supreme Court. This 100, 000 usd issue if is reported to the General Legal Council would end his ambition to the Supreme Court. If you talk about this his going to the Supreme Court is finished. He would do everything to stop people from probing since Nyantakyi has some evidence of receipts of the money,” Taylor alleged.
He believes Nyantakyi’s actions are driven by a desire for retribution against the NPP, also because, the promises that were allegedly made to him by the NPP government to help him fight Anas have not been fulfilled.
Kwesi Nyantakyi, a former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), experienced a significant downfall following a corruption scandal. He was caught on video accepting a bribe and claiming influence over government positions, which led to his resignation from the GFA in 2018. FIFA initially banned him from all football-related activities for life, but this was later reduced to a 15-year ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Despite these controversies, Nyantakyi has ventured into politics, aspiring to be the National Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu constituency. The seat became vacant following the death of Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah. Nyantakyi is among several candidates who have expressed interest in the NPP primaries for this constituency. Other candidates include;
1.Lawyer Kwabena Boateng
2. Dr Evans Duah

The NPP has scheduled the election for a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu constituency by-election on Saturday, April 13, 2024.
Journalist Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor has accused lawyer Kwame Djan of trying to silence former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi regarding an alleged $100,000 bribery scandal.
Taylor claimed that it was true that “Nyantekyi gave money to lawyer Kwame Djan” who he describes as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s “close legal friend.”
This revelation comes after Nyantakyi said in an interview last week that, “Before the video was released, a former colleague at the GFA Exco, Adam Munkaila, took me to Anas’ lawyers, a certain Kwame Djan, a lecturer at Legon. I met him at his residence around Westland, and he told me Anas was his student and had informed him he needed $150,000 to kill the story. I had never been to his house before,” he said in an interview on Onua TV.
‘I gave them $100,000, but they told me the amount was inadequate and later went ahead to release the video. After the video came out, I asked for a refund and even the refund was done in pieces. Today, they would bring $20,000, and the next day another $10,000. They were giving me stories, but eventually I got everything back,” he added.
According to Taylor, this Kwame Djan in question has since this revelation, been, “begging Nyantakyi to keep quiet over the 100,000 USD”, due to his alleged soon-to-be appointment to the Supreme Court.
“The reason why Djan is begging Nyantakyi is that Nana Addo has appointed him in waiting to the Supreme Court. He is going to replace one Mariama Owusu who is retiring. This 100, 000 USD issue if is reported to the General Legal Council would end his ambition to the Supreme Court. The reason he is begging Nyantakyi not to talk about the matter again. If you talk about this his going to the Supreme Court is finished. He would do everything to stop people from probing, since Nyantekyi has some evidence of receipts of the money. How can a lawyer of such high standard going to Supreme Court stoop so low to collect a bribe and pay back in instalments. If you don’t talk they would go ahead and take him to the Supreme Court,” Taylor wrote.
Taylor, who made these revelations in an X post, also connected Djan to other key influential figures like Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, the Okyenhene, and Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
He described Djan as an “An NPP guy directly from Akyem Aboakwa. He is a distant family member of Nana Addo and the Okyehene. He is also a lecturer at the University of Ghana and recently represented Dampare at the public inquiry. Ralph Agyapong works in Djan and associates which belongs to Djan so Kwame Djan is also Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer.”
Djan, also a lecturer at the University of Ghana, had allegedly also lied to Nyantakyi that he was Kevin Taylor’s lawyer as well.
“All along he had lied to Nyantekyi that he was my lawyer when actually I had nothing to do with him,” Taylor revealed.
Nyantakyi reportedly possesses evidence of the payments made to Djan. Despite returning the money in instalments upon realizing the potential consequences, Djan now faces threats from Nyantakyi to report the matter to the General Legal Council.
“Nyantekyi paid to Djan, who when realizing it would bring him problems paid back in bits to Nyantekyi. Nyantekyi has the evidence and is threatening the whole system that he would refer it to the GLC since he is also a lawyer,” he noted.
The gravity of the situation has stirred widespread speculation, with Nyantakyi’s threats looming over legal circles. While Djan is yet to respond to these damning claims, Taylor believes Nyantakyi’s actions stem from dissatisfaction with unfulfilled promises from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Despite denials from Anas and his firm, Tiger Eye P.I., Nyantakyi maintains his version of events, alleging that Kwame Djan, who was introduced to him as Anas’ lawyer, demanded $150,000 to suppress the exposé. He claims to have paid $100,000 but received a refund in instalments after the video’s release.
Controversial journalist Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor has recently made startling claims on X, implicating one lawyer Kwame Djan in an alleged bribery scandal involving investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi.
According to Taylor, Nyantakyi allegedly gave money to this Kwame Djan, who supposedly has close ties to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and is also a lecturer at the University of Ghana.
This assertion, by Taylor, corroborates what Nyantakyi said last week when he revealed details of this alleged blackmail attempt by Anas and his team.
According to Nyantakyi, “Before the video was released, a former colleague at the GFA Exco, Adam Munkaila, took me to Anas’ lawyers, a certain Kwame Djan, a lecturer at Legon. I met him at his residence around Westland, and he told me Anas was his student and had informed him he needed $150,000 to kill the story. I had never been to his house before, “he said in an interview on Onua TV.
Taylor also linked Djan to the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, the Okyenhene, and Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
“It is true that Nyantekyi gave money to lawyer Kwame Djan who is Nana Addo close legal friend. An NPP guy directly from Akyem Aboakwa. He is a distant family member of Nana Addo and the Okyehene. He is also a lecturer at the University of Ghana and recently represented Dampare at the public enquiry. Ralph Agyapong works in Djan and associates which belongs to Djan so Kwame Djan is also Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer,” he wrote on X.
Taylor dismissed claims that Djan was instructed to pass the bribe money to him [Kevin Taylor], stating that he had no involvement in the matter.
“It is ridiculous that I would want to take bribe money from Kennedy’s lawyer, as Nyantakyi claims that lawyer Djan took the money to bring to me,” he added.
According to Taylor, information suggests that this Lawyer Kwame Djan in question is now pleading with Nyantakyi to remain silent about the alleged $100,000 bribe, fearing it could jeopardize his supposed appointment to the Supreme Court. Nyantakyi reportedly possesses evidence of the payments
“Inside filla indicates that Lawyer Djan is currently begging Nyantekyi to keep quite over the 100,000 USD. All along he had lied to Nyantekyi that he was my lawyer when actually I had nothing to do with him, Taylor claimed.
“The reason why Djan is begging Nyantekyi is that Nana Addo has appointed him in waiting to the Supreme Court. He is going to replace one Mariama Owusu who is retiring. This 100, 000 USD issue if is reported to the General Legal Council would end his ambition to the Supreme Court. If you talk about this, his going to the Supreme Court is finished.”
Nyantakyi is said to have paid Djan, who, realizing the implications, returned the money in instalments. However, Nyantakyi is now threatening to report the matter to the General Legal Council (GLC) due to Djan’s alleged involvement.
“He would do everything to stop people from probing, since Nyantekyi has some evidence of receipts of the money. How can a lawyer of such high standard going to Supreme Court stoop so low to collect a bribe and pay back in instalments? Nyantekyi paid to Djan, who when realizing it would bring him problems paid back in bits to Nyantakyi. Nyantekyi has the evidence and is threatening the whole system that he would refer it to the GLC since he is also a lawyer.” Kevin mentioned.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, Kwame Djan is yet to respond to these claims.
Taylor believes Nyantakyi is saying all this now because he is dissatisfied with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failure to fulfill alleged promises made to him and has even been denied an unopposed candidacy in Ejisu constituency, leading to his frustration and decision to expose the alleged bribery.
“Nyantakyi people say they don’t care what happens, the promises that were made to them by the NPP government to fight Anas have not been fulfilled. Painfully Nyantekyi requested to go unopposed in Ejisu, the NPP has refused to let him do that so he is angry now hence the name mentioning,” he alleged.
The situation remains tense as Nyantakyi’s threats loom over legal circles, causing widespread speculation and concern.
Anas and his firm, Tiger Eye P.I., have vehemently denied Nyantakyi’s claims of a $100,000 bribe related to the Number 12 exposé. In a statement, they dismissed the allegations as “preposterous” and “indicative of naivety,” underscoring their mission to “expose and confront corruption” and the impossibility of suppressing such a significant investigation.
Anas further clarified that at no point did they engage the services of a lawyer named Kwame Gyan, as alleged by Nyantakyi. Instead, they have consistently worked with CromwellGray LLP for legal representation. They challenged Nyantakyi to provide evidence of his claims and to take legal action if his allegations hold any substance.
Nyantakyi, on the other hand, has been vocal about his version of events. He insists that Anas, through a lawyer, demanded $150,000 to halt the airing of the exposé.
The unfolding scandal continues to grip public attention, raising concerns about corruption and influence within Ghana’s legal and political spheres.
The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has forecasted a steep increase in fuel prices shortly.
The Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, cited global market trends and the Cedi’s performance as contributing factors.
“The reversal of the petroleum levy has also contributed to this, and the market is squeezing itself; if not, the rise would have been more significant.
“We are widely exposed, and the signals as far as international market price movement and the CEDIA’s performance are concerned don’t look too good, and fuel prices will continue to increase,” he explained.
Ghanaian consumers are already bracing themselves for the impending price hikes, exacerbated by the reinstatement of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
Following this directive, the NPA instructed stakeholders in the oil marketing and distribution sector to apply additional charges: 16 pesewas per litre for petrol, 14 pesewas per litre for diesel, and 14 pesewas for every kilogram of liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
This latest surge marks the most significant increase since February 2023, when fuel prices stood at GH¢15.40 per litre and diesel at GH¢15.50.
Amoah suggested that reducing taxes could ease consumer strain, but he acknowledged that current IMF negotiations limit the government’s ability to act.
“We will be deluding ourselves if we expect the government to do anything at the moment because their hands are tied. The onus now lies with the Bank of Ghana to perform the magic they did in 2022 to appreciate the Cedi,” he noted.
The intriguing tale of Dr. Kwabena Adjei, president and founder of Kasapreko Company Limited, unfolds from his humble beginnings in the forest to his hustle in the city and eventually returning to his roots to build his dream mansion where he resides with his entire family, including extended relatives.
Despite his considerable wealth, Dr. Adjei chose to embrace modesty, opting to live in a retirement home nestled within a forest in Wassa Amenfi, Western Region.
This decision contrasts sharply with his numerous luxurious residential properties scattered across the country, such as the renowned ‘Signature Apartments’ in Accra.
In a candid discussion with popular Ghanaian vlogger, Wode Maya, the business tycoon reflects on his past struggles, sheds light on his present modest lifestyle, and shares his aspirations to leave behind a lasting legacy for future generations.
“For the first 13 years of my life, I was born in the forest. I had never travelled anywhere other than in the forest. It was very challenging. Because at that time, I was not even living in this cottage, (points to his mansion). I was with my mother, father, and myself in the middle of the forest. So, I used to walk about five miles each morning to come to school here. (points to the area in which he built his mansion) and after school, I went back to the middle of the forest, where I lived with my parents.
“Where I live currently is a family house I built (points to the mansion). As the head of the Aduana family, I had to relocate all my family members from the first house (a simple two storey-building) to this current place. I am an old man, I am not doing these things for myself, I just want to do something for my generation. I take care of my family’s needs. Each member of my clan. I sponsor each one of them through to the University.
I’ve set up a fund for my grandchildren so that even if their father cannot support them someday, their grandfather already has. I was so inspired by my forefathers. I live like a villager; I eat what the villagers eat. You grow your own thing and eat your own thing. (points to his farm filled with labourers). I am a village man,” he told Wode Maya.
However, despite all these, the Kasapreko Group of Companies founder insists that he is not a billionaire, “I am not a billionaire. As for wealth, I can’t say I am a rich man. I am an average man, an average person. Recently, I was in America, and they are the rich ones with dollars. So, if I have some cedis, I can’t say I am a billionaire. In Africa, aside from Dangote, who else is rich? Nobody. Who is rich in Ghana? Nobody.”
Touching on his decision to remain despite being one of the richest men in Africa, Dr. Kwabena Adjei expressed, “When the eagle wants to hunt, it studies its prey, goes direct, and picks it. I am all about being focused, not being flamboyant, and not being out there because no benefit comes with it.Not everything needs publicity,I am not a media person but sometimes you cannot hide.”
Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, celebrated his 80th milestone on March 29, 2024, with a series of celebratory events, including a Thanksgiving Service.
New footage from President Akufo-Addo’s lavish Thanksgiving Service has surfaced.
Broadcasted by UTV on April 6, 2024, the footage captures the birthday honoree, Akufo-Addo, alongside Vice President and NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and key figures of the party, participating in the service.
The event was graced by the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo; the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia; Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema-Osei Opare; Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum; and the former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The highlight of the video is the moment when Akufo-Addo, along with other attendees, stood up to sing and dance, expressing their thankfulness for the president’s life.
The video captures a joyful Dr. Bawumia dancing, hand-in-hand with his wife Samira, who also joined in the singing and dancing festivities.
The Deputy Director of the National Service Secretariat (NSS), Gifty Oware-Mensah, in a recent development, has deactivated her social media accounts following her implication in a scholarship scandal exposed by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure’s The Fourth Estate.
Oware-Mensah was identified among affluent individuals allegedly benefiting from scholarships intended for academically gifted but financially disadvantaged Ghanaians.
Reports indicate that she secured a government scholarship worth GBP18,450 to pursue an MSc in Development Policy and Politics at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 2020. This scholarship was allegedly obtained three years into her tenure at the Secretariat.
When approached for comment on January 19, 2024, Oware-Mensah initially denied any knowledge of the scholarship, stating, “From 2019, my name has been Gifty Oware-Mensah. Let me call Kingsley [Agyemang] and get back. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Let me speak to them and get back to you.”
Despite promises to follow up, subsequent attempts to reach her proved futile.
Aside from her role at the NSS, Oware-Mensah is also known for owning Berry Ladies FC, formerly Halifax Ladies FC, a team competing in Ghana’s women’s premier league.
Meanwhile, the 2023/24 NSS personnel have demanded the government to settle their outstanding allowance arrears, as they claim not to have received payment for the past two months.
Oware-Mensah’s decision to deactivate her social media accounts, particularly her ‘X’ account where she is usually active, has sparked speculation among users. Some believe that she took this action due to potential backlash following The Fourth Estate’s expose. However, her Instagram account remains accessible to the public.
Ghana’s Majority Leader in Parliament, Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has been appointed as the 3rd Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, marking a significant milestone in his parliamentary career.
Afenyo-Markin’s extensive experience in both national and ECOWAS parliamentary affairs makes him well-suited for this prestigious position.
The inauguration of the 6th ECOWAS Parliament took place on April 4, 2024, with Guinea’s reinstatement into the community serving as a positive sign of regional stability following its recent political turmoil.
However, the absence of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso at the ceremony highlighted a gap in the unity of the ECOWAS community.
The Republic of Togo, responsible for nominating the Speaker for the 6th Parliament, is yet to announce its candidates. As a result, Sidie Mohamed Tunis has been temporarily appointed as the ceremonial Speaker, especially since Togo’s parliamentary elections have been postponed.
The lineup of Deputy Speakers includes Barau Jibrin from Nigeria, Adjaratou Coulibaly from Ivory Coast, and Billay G. Tunkara from the Gambia, holding the 1st, 2nd, and 4th positions respectively.
The selection of Deputy Speakers was marked by intense lobbying, with Cabo Verde’s bid being unsuccessful due to its failure to fulfill financial commitments to the ECOWAS, echoing challenges faced during the 5th ECOWAS Parliament.
This situation has sparked concerns among member states regarding financial participation and its potential impact on governance.
As the newly elected representatives of the 6th ECOWAS Parliament assume their roles, they face the crucial task of addressing regional issues and advancing the collective objectives of member nations, amidst a backdrop of complex political and economic dynamics across the region.
Founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addae Odike, has demanded a radical shift in Ghana’s leadership, advocating for the ousting of the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) and blocking the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from power.
Odike criticizes both parties for being indistinguishable in their actions and intentions, despite having different titles.
The entrepreneur-turned-politician insists that for Ghanaians to see the desired change, it’s imperative to remove these parties from the nation’s governance.
He accuses the two parties of prioritizing personal wealth accumulation over national interest when in power.
Turning his attention to the NPP and President Akufo-Addo, Odike declares the president to be the most detrimental leader in Ghana’s political history.
He bluntly states that President Akufo-Addo’s tenure has been more hellish than heavenly, despite earlier promises.
“The man has taken out more loans than anyone, but he has nothing significant to show for these loans,” he remarked.
Odike suggests that political leaders’ pursuit of loans is driven by personal gain rather than public welfare.
“Akufo-Addo will go down in history as the worst president in Ghana. He has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that he lacks the knowledge to be president of the republic. There is no proof to show that he is knowledgeable when it comes to leadership.
“He is clueless. I don’t hate Akufo-Addo as a person, but I hate his leadership style. I have even doubted his credentials as a good lawyer. No lawyer of good standing will demonstrate this kind of failure in leadership or behave in this manner. To me, where he obtained his law certificate is questionable. He doesn’t understand what democracy entails.
“He only understands democracy as organizing elections. He lacks an understanding of the tenets of democracy; he does not understand the characteristics of democracy and why Ghanaians chose democracy.
“People thought he was a fine and intelligent person, but he has demonstrated over the years that he is ignorant. He deceived us with his English, and we are paying the bitter price of his failed leadership. I am not sure he will be a happy man when he ends his term as president. We don’t have to waste our time on the NPP; they have messed up the weather economy,” Odike expressed.
The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has strongly criticised John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for his remarks on the government’s ‘One-Student-One-Tablet’ initiative.
Mustapha took to social media to express his disapproval of Mahama’s stance, calling for the public to regard such comments with contempt.
Mustapha argued that while the NPP government prioritises the welfare of students as the future of the nation, Mahama views them merely as potential voters in upcoming elections.
He questioned Mahama’s credibility and the NDC’s right to criticise the initiative, reminding them of a similar project implemented during their tenure.
“John Mahama says that the current program to give 1student 1Laptop under the Ghana Smart School Project is an attempt to bribe the SHS students for votes. Such horrible thinking should be treated with scorn and disdain.
“These are SHS students, most of whom have no votes, so as to how it constitutes a bribe attempt beats every imagination. It’s clear to us that in the mind of Sgt Lee, he doesn’t see them as human beings but rather ballot papers,” Mustapha remarked.
“Has John Mahama suddenly developed amnesia too, to forget his own RLG (formerly Roagams Link Ghana Ltd ) project with his bosom friend Roland Agambire? Or is it just sheer hypocrisy or dishonesty?” he questioned.
John Dramani Mahama, speaking at a student forum at Wisconsin University in Accra, criticised the government’s allocation of tablets to high school students, labelling it as a tactic to influence votes.
Mahama argued, “you bring a new curriculum; the children have no textbooks in basic schools for the last four years, and you think that giving pre-tertiary students tablets is more important. Of course, everybody knows the political expediency.”
“The pre-tertiary students are going to register in May because some of them are going to be 18 and above. Some are 18 already, and they are going to be the ones voting. So, this is a gift to entice them to vote for the current government. It’s a bribe for them to vote for this government, but I mean, the students do not exist in isolation. They live in households and families,” Mahama added.
In 2010, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology in Ghana contracted RLG Communications Limited to manufacture and distribute over 103,181 laptops. The NDC government at the time paid GH¢51,257,500.00 for these laptops.
However, RLG was only able to produce 90,448 laptops, leaving a balance of 12,733 pieces worth GH¢6,366,875.00 undelivered. This discrepancy led to violations in the execution of the contract, as highlighted in a 2015 Auditor General’s Report.
As a result, RLG Communications Limited agreed to repay GH¢6 million to the government due to its failure to supply the remaining laptops under the Free Laptop Distribution Programme in 2010.
Lawyer and scholar, Dr Poku Adusei, recognized for his strong support of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his position as the legal head of the National Communications Authority (NCA), has made a surprising move by reportedly deactivating his Facebook account shortly after President Akufo-Addo nominated him as a judge for the Court of Appeal.
Dr Poku Adusei is amongst 7 other lawyers who have been appointed by the president, for the Court of Appeal. If approved by parliament, these 8 lawyers will go down in history as the largest group in history as the most significant number of judges ever appointed to the Court at one time, elevating the total number of Court of Appeal judges to 53.
Dr Poku Adusei, highly regarded for his academic accomplishments including a Ph.D. in law from McGill University in Canada, has previously held esteemed positions such as Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority and lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law.
Despite his impressive background, Dr Adusei has faced criticism for his vocal support of the government and contentious remarks on various national matters.
His combative social media presence, marked by disparaging comments towards dissenting voices, has sparked considerable debate.
Observers attempting to reach out to him on social media platforms discovered that his profile had been deactivated, suggesting a deliberate attempt to distance himself from past controversies.
In a separate development last year, former President John Dramani Mahama accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of stacking Ghana’s judiciary with judges sympathetic to the NPP.
Mr. Mahama alleged that Akufo-Addo had intentionally appointed his allies to the bench to exert influence even after leaving office.
At the closing ceremony of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama expressed concerns about the growing number of NPP-affiliated judges in the judiciary, suggesting a calculated effort to evade accountability in the future.
Her statement follows the uproar over the alleged marriage between 12-year-old Naa Okromo and a 63-year-old priest, sparking widespread condemnation.
During an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mrs Larbi stressed that child marriage is unacceptable under the law, dismissing attempts to justify such unions by invoking deities.
“Whether it’s to a deity or a human being or whatever, it’s a crime,” she affirmed.
Mrs Larbi highlighted the secretive nature of these marriages, often conducted covertly to evade legal scrutiny, with the child living with the adult until adulthood.
Despite efforts to raise awareness about the illegality of child marriage, Mrs Larbiemphasized the need for further action, particularly in northern Ghana, where it remains prevalent.
Deputy Attorney-General Diana Asonaba Dapaah also condemned the alleged marriage, emphasizing that the law prohibits such unions, regardless of the child’s age.
“It is neither here nor there whether 12, 15 or 16—of course, I’m mindful of Section 122 of Act 560 on the determination of a child’s age. It is key only for purposes of ensuring that Section 14 has not been breached, and clearly, the argument being thrown out there, whether 12, 15 or 16, still does not meet the age criteria,” she said.
Mrs Dapaah stressed the importance of upholding the legal definition of childhood until the age of 18, as outlined in Section 1 of Act 560, to ensure compliance with Section 14, which prohibits child betrothals.
Renowned Ghanaian physician and cardiac surgeon Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has recounted the obstacles he faced while establishing Ghana’s Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Returning from Germany to set up the country’s first Cardiothoracic Centre, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng expected support but encountered challenges, including sabotage attempts by fellow doctors.
During an interview on JoyNews on Friday, April 5, 2024, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng disclosed the struggles he endured, including being denied crucial resources and facing opposition from within the medical community.
“In the first few years, I was alone, taking blood from patients, taking them to the lab, and running all the errands that a housemaster should be doing. I did all these things, and people were just trying to make sure that things became tough, and we wouldn’t get on,” he revealed.
He further divulged a shocking revelation: some doctors conspired to cause patient deaths and frame him for the fatalities.
“Someone even suggested to the head of anaesthesia that they should go and fiddle with the equipment at the Intensive Care Unit so that when patients are put on them, they will die, and I would be discredited,” Prof. Frimpong-Boateng disclosed, adding that an anaesthetist exposed the sinister plot.
The anaesthetist, upon learning of the scheme, alerted Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, preventing potential fatalities and protecting his reputation.
“So the head of anaesthesia told him to put it on paper… Of course, he will not do it. So he [head of anaesthesia] came to me and said, Kwabena, be careful. And, of course, what that person (the doctor) did subsequently told me that I had to be very careful,” he noted.
After completing his medical studies in Ghana and advanced training in Germany, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng returned to Ghana, establishing himself as the nation’s first and only cardiothoracic surgeon for several years.
Despite his significant contributions to Ghana’s healthcare system, including numerous successful heart surgeries, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng expressed disappointment with the current state of the Cardiothoracic Centre and the lack of efforts to improve it.
In August 2011, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was controversially dismissed as head of the Korle-Bu Cardiothoracic Centre, a move criticised by many as unjust.
The Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at COCOBOD has countered the prosecution’s attempt to attribute fluctuations in cocoa yields solely to the use of specific fertilisers, citing various factors influencing cocoa production.
A former Executive Director of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) of COCOBOD, Dr Francis Baah, testifying in the trial of former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr Stephen Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo, emphasized that cocoa yields can vary due to multiple factors, including weather conditions, farming practices, and fertiliser usage.
During the trial, Dr Baah dismissed the notion of any single fertiliser being solely responsible for changes in cocoa production, clarifying that COCOBOD procures and utilises multiple fertilisers each season.
In response to questions from counsel for Seidu Agongo, Dr Baah stressed the need for comprehensive studies before attributing cocoa yield changes to specific fertilisers.
“Would your Monitoring & Evaluation Department blame any particular fertiliser for the rise, fall and or stagnation of cocoa production in any particular production year from 2013/14 till date?” he was asked.
His response: “No! Unless there is a study or report to identify the culprit.”
He also highlighted the complex nature of cocoa production, emphasizing the role of various environmental and management factors.
Regarding the fluctuation in cocoa yields over recent years, Dr Baah reiterated that blaming any individual or fertiliser for these changes would be oversimplifying a complex situation.
Dr Baah’s testimony sheds light on the intricate dynamics of cocoa production, challenging the prosecution’s singular focus on fertiliser usage.
The trial proceedings will resume at the Accra High Court on April 8, 2024.
Below is a transcript of an except of the cross according to theheraldghana.com
Q. In 2021, the yield jumped to 1,047,384.94; that is correct?
A. That is correct
Q. The following year, 20211/2022, it fell by almost 40% to 683,268.94; that is correct?
A. That is correct
Q. Would it be right for anybody sitting anywhere to say that it was as a result of fertilisers that were bought by your chief executive in 2021/2022?
A. That would not be the case; it is a combination of [a] myriad of factors.
Q. Please explain to this honourable court why your chief executive for that year should not be blamed for the fall from 1,047,384.94 to 683,268.94.
A. I would not blame my chief executive because he does not have any control over the elements and factors that determine production, including the world market price.
Q. Will you attribute the fall in production from the 2020–2021 cocoa season to the 2021–2022 cocoa season to any fertiliser procured under the supervision of your Chief Executive at the time?
A. I will not. The changes or the vagaries in production figures is impinged on, as I have explained before, by a basket of factors.
Q. 2022/2023, it fell further to 656,139.87; that is true?
A. That is true
Q. Who do you blame for that?
A. I am not in the position to blame anybody
Q. Which fertiliser do you blame for that?
A. I blame no input.
Q. When you take out the production of 2022/2023, which is 656,139.87, from the production of 2016/2017, which is 969,510.69, you will get 313,370.82 metric tonnes; that is correct?
A. That is correct.
Q. Tell this honourable court, as far as you are aware, has anybody been held responsible for the two years of 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 for the production of cocoa?
A. I don’t know of anybody being held responsible.
Q. Would it be appropriate for the managers of COCOBOD for 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 to be held responsible for [the] fall in production when you yourself have said that production is a result of a basket of issues and that no agronomy practice, husbandry, or management can determine the production?
A. I do not think it would be appropriate unless there is clear evidence of dereliction of duties on the part of any staff.
Q. Can any particular fertiliser or chemical be held responsible for the fall that we have seen in 2021/2022 and 2022/2023?
The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha, has issued a stern warning to Hopeson Adorye, the Director of Special Duties for the Movement for Change, regarding his criticism of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a recent Facebook post, Salam Mustapha condemned what he described as harsh attacks by Hopeson on Dr. Bawumia, who is the NPP’s flagbearer.
Referring to their past association during Hopeson Adorye’s tenure as an NPP member, Salam cautioned that he would not hesitate to set aside their relationship in response to Hopeson’s assaults on Dr. Bawmumia.
“Myself and you have known each other for a very long time, at least since 2011 there about. We have done so many operations together, some were very sensitive. We worked together in the famous Young Patriots team which took on the NDC in those vile days of vitriolic language on Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with the likes of the late John Kumah. In short, you know so well.
“Today, my message to you is simple. Take Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia out of your mouth. He will not be your chewing stick. No. He will not. I will put my brotherhood with you aside and we will do it the young patriots way if you attack our Flagbearer again,” excerpts of his post read.
The youth organiser also stated that while he holds respect for the Flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, a former senior member of the NPP, he is prepared to reciprocate Hopeson Adorye’s actions.
“You have a presidential candidate, we have not attacked him. It is just out of respect for him but that can be thrown to the dogs. And he will feel taste of the medicine you’re giving to our Flagbearer. You know me, this is the nicest I can be,” he added.
Responding to this, Hopeson Adorye challenged Salam Mustapha, saying “Bring it on my brother.”
Hopeson Adorye recently criticised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his inability to stabilize the Ghana cedi against major trading currencies, despite promising to do so while in opposition.
In a Facebook post on March 25, 2024, he directly targeted Bawumia, remarking, “He was restoring the value of the cedi in 2014 in opposition but cannot restore the value in government.”
Former Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) boss, Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, has been barred from visiting Offinso residents in a familiarization tour amid chieftaincy tensions.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Offinso Municipal Assembly has cautioned against any group actions that could exacerbate the ongoing chieftaincy disagreements.
The municipal office issued this directive through a letter addressed to Dr. Sarpong, who is said to have been chosen by Offinso’s ousted queen mother, Nana Ama Serwah Nyarko, as the Offinsomanhene, the paramount chief of the area.
The deposed queen mother, who was destooled in January 2024, had remained silent until a letter dated March 13, 2024, purportedly under her letterhead, surfaced on social media, claiming to have appointed Dr Sarpong as Offinsomanhene, despite the Asante Kingdom’s overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, having already confirmed Nana Amoako Poku’s appointment and installation as the recognized chief.
In a reply, the MCE directly addressed Dr. Sarpong, acknowledging his intention to commence a familiarization tour in Offinso to declare his alleged appointment, and has urged the postponement of the programme until further notice.
“The Council wish to advise your outfit to rescind your decision and suspend the programme until further notice. Please, if you fail to comply with this directive, you will be held responsible should there be any eventuality,” the letter added.
The decision to destool the queen mother was made by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after she persistently nominated KK Sarpong as paramount chief despite being advised otherwise.
Pro-KK Sarpong indigenes were seen in a video that circulated last week, acknowledging his appointment and paying homage to him as the Offinsomanhene.
However, Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, has yet to comment on these developments.

Yesterday evening, a distressing incident occurred at Kasoa involving the well-known comedian Funny Face, resulting in injuries to five pedestrians.
Witnesses reported that Funny Face had been driving erratically around a roundabout while blaring music from his vehicle, before heading towards his home and colliding with a family and two motorcyclists.
Initial fears suggested a child had perished due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the victims. However, recent updates indicate that all individuals involved are currently receiving medical care and showing positive signs of recovery.
Comedian DKB, a colleague of Funny Face, arrived at the accident scene and later informed the public via social media that, fortunately, there were no fatalities. He expressed gratitude towards the Ghana Police Service for their prompt intervention, which prevented an angry mob from harming Funny Face.
The accident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing sympathy for Funny Face‘s mental health struggles.
The comedian has been vocal about his personal challenges, including a contentious custody dispute with his ex-partner, Vanessa Nicole. He has accused her of exacerbating his stress by limiting his access to their children.
Funny Face has a history of battling severe depression, which has led to hospitalization and threats of self-harm in the past. After a period of apparent stability, he recently resumed airing grievances on social media.
Public opinion is divided, with some showing deep concern for his well-being, while others speculate that he may be overstating his emotional distress.
Comparisons have been drawn to the plight of Black Stars icon Odartey Lamptey, who endured a protracted legal battle over the paternity of his children. Following a tumultuous divorce, Lamptey has since remarried and is now a father to three biological children.
For ongoing coverage of this story, stay tuned for further updates.
Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas in the Twitterverse, has finally broken his silence, sharing chilling details of an alleged abduction and torture he recently endured.
Several weeks ago, Bongo Ideas found himself in the crosshairs of state security agents, leading to his arrest. Curiously, both the police and national security agencies later disavowed any knowledge of his detention.
After days of uncertainty, he was eventually released, but not unscathed. Reports suggest he returned home in a distressed state.
In an exclusive interview with German broadcaster DW Africa, Bongo Ideas recounted the harrowing hours he spent at the mercy of individuals who claimed to be police officers.
He described being held at gunpoint, the cold metal of pistols pressed against his temple, and the ominous threat of death hanging over him. His alleged crime? Criticizing the president.
“On 14th March 2024, around 3 a.m., some men, disguised as policemen, burst into my room. They dragged me out, and I found myself staring down the barrels of their weapons. They warned me to utter my last prayers, and then they beat me mercilessly. Their chilling message: Never speak about the president,” Bongo Ideas recounted to DW News.
The incident sparked a fierce debate on social media. While some believed he had brought this upon himself, others rallied behind him, advocating for democratic channels to address his behaviour rather than resorting to threats against a fellow citizen.

Former Minister for Agriculture, Kwesi Ahwoi, has issued an apology to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, for his recent comments made at a reception for Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Ahwoi expressed regret over the misunderstanding caused by his remarks, clarifying that he never intended to suggest that John Mahama should not complete his full term if elected in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement, Ahwoi acknowledged that he misspoke during the event and accepted criticisms, though he believed some critiques were based on a misinterpretation of his words.
He emphasised that during the reception, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang corrected the impression his statement created, affirming her confidence in John Mahama’s victory and full term in office.
Ahwoi acknowledged that his comments overshadowed the positive atmosphere of the event and offered an unreserved apology to John Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the NDC leadership and members.
He called for unity within the party, urging everyone to focus on supporting John Mahama as the NDC’s flagbearer in the upcoming December 2024 elections to bring positive change to the country.
I have taken notice of the unfortunate controversy that has arisen as a result of a comment I made at a reception organized last Thursday by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithful for Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Running Mate to our esteemed flagbearer, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
I sincerely regret the wrong impression that my comment has created. Indeed, it was not my intention, and never will it be my intention to pray that H.E. John Mahama does not serve his full four-year term when he wins the 2024 general elections.
I concede that I misspoke on the occasion. I accept the criticisms in good faith, even though some of the criticisms arise out of a deliberate misrepresentation of my statement.
Indeed, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang in response to my toast, pointed out the erroneous impression created by my statement and was categorical in asserting that she was certain that H.E. John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections and serve his full four-year term.
It is unfortunate that my statement appears to have taken the shine off what was otherwise a cheerful and light-hearted occasion.
I hereby render an unreserved and unqualified apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the leadership and rank and file of the great NDC.
Comrades and friends, let us put this unfortunate incident behind us and unite behind our flag-bearer, the visionary Nation Builder, to rescue our beloved country in the December 2024 elections.
Ghana’s trade surplus has been significantly impacted by a decrease in cocoa exports, leading to concerns about the stability of the country’s currency, the cedi.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the trade surplus for January and February fell by 54% compared to the same period last year, amounting to $392.8 million. Revenue from cocoa exports also experienced a sharp decline of nearly one-third, reaching $508.4 million during this time frame.
This decline comes despite a considerable increase in New York cocoa futures prices, which have more than doubled this year to $8,939 a ton. The surge in prices has been driven by reduced production in West Africa due to adverse weather conditions, diseases, and a shortage of fertilizers, setting the stage for a third consecutive year of cocoa bean shortages in the global market.
Ghana’s cocoa harvest for the 2023-2024 season, projected to range between 650,000 tons to 700,000 tons, falls short of the initial forecast of 850,000 tons, as reported by the Ghana Cocoa Board.
The revenue shortfall from cocoa, a key export commodity for Ghana and the world’s second-largest producer after Ivory Coast, exacerbates the challenges faced by the cedi.
Already experiencing an 8.3% depreciation against the dollar since the beginning of the year, the cedi ranks as the third-worst performing currency among 24 African currencies tracked by Bloomberg. On Friday, the cedi weakened further by 0.2% to 13.045 per dollar.
Additional economic and financial indicators highlighted in the Bank of Ghana report include:
Total exports in the first two months of 2024 rose by 1.6% to $2.9 billion year-on-year (y/y), while imports surged by 26% to $2.5 billion.
Gold exports increased by 16.6% to $1.3 billion, and oil shipments grew by 12.4% to $620 million.
Gross international reserves expanded by 4.6% to $6.2 billion, covering 2.8 months of imports, unchanged from the previous year.
The budget deficit for 2023 narrowed to 3.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) from 8.3%.
Public debt, excluding state-owned enterprise loans, rose to 610 billion cedis ($46.76 billion) in 2023 from 446.3 billion.
The debt-to-GDP ratio decreased to 72.5% compared to 73.1% y/y.
Total loans by banks increased to 74.8 billion cedis by the end of February, up from 73.5 billion a year earlier.
Annual loan growth slowed to 1.8% from 30.7% y/y.
The capital adequacy ratio rose to 13.6% from 12.6%.
Non-performing loans increased to 24.6% from 16.6%.
Monthly mobile money transactions surged to 195.8 billion cedis in February from 134 billion cedis a year earlier.
A significant moment at the nomination party for Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang took an unexpected turn when Kwesi Ahwoi, a founding member of the National Democratic Congress, offered some advice to John Dramani Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 elections.
During the event held at the Ahwois’ office in Labone, as reported by Asaase Radio, Kwesi Ahwoi encouraged Prof Opoku-Agyemang to prepare herself for the possibility of assuming the presidency, citing the circumstances that led to John Mahama’s presidency in 2012 as a precedent.
In a video that quickly went viral, Kwesi Ahwoi proposed a toast, reminiscing about how John Mahama unexpectedly assumed the presidency after President Mills stepped aside. He advised Prof Opoku-Agyemang to remain vigilant and ready to take on the role of president if fate were to intervene similarly.
“John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time, but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared as your motto says, anything can happen, and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Kwesi Ahwoi said.
The National Democratic Congress officially confirmed Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 election on March 7, 2024.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, the NDC expressed pride in presenting a strong team of Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for the upcoming presidential elections. The party highlighted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s vast experience and emphasized its commitment to empowering women.
“Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and leader renowned for her dedication to education and public service. Having served as Minister for Education and as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she has emerged as a trailblazer for women in leadership across Ghana,” the statement read.
The nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang reflects the NDC’s dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles. With her extensive qualifications and experience, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings valuable knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s presidential ticket.

Franklin Cudjoe, the founder and CEO of IMANI Africa, has urged Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame to issue an unreserved apology to the people of SALL for not pursuing justice on their behalf.
This call comes after the Attorney-General’s office requested an apology from Mr Cudjoe for remarks they deemed offensive.
Mr Cudjoe’s comments included criticism of the Attorney-General’s legal advice to the executive branch, mentioning specific cases such as SALL, Domelevo, Charlotte Osei, James Quayson, Martin Amidu, and Ato Forson.
Responding to the demand for an apology, Mr Cudjoe posted on Facebook, stating, “I hear AG isn’t happy. I hear. Tell him sorry. He should just be a fair Justice Minister. That is all.”
In addition to addressing the Attorney-General’s demand, Mr Cudjoe also pleaded for an apology on behalf of the residents of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL).
During the 2020 elections, voters in these areas were only permitted to vote in the presidential election due to the absence of a designated parliamentary constituency.
The residents took legal action to assert their right to vote, resulting in a court injunction preventing the Electoral Commission from declaring the NPP’s John Peter Amewu as the MP-elect for Hohoe.
Godfred Dame, then Deputy Attorney General, led the state’s legal efforts to overturn the injunction, which eventually succeeded.
In his Facebook post, Mr Cudjoe urged the Attorney-General to apologise to the citizens of SALL for neglecting their pursuit of justice.
He stressed the importance of acknowledging the failure to advocate for the disenfranchised SALL citizens and provide constructive advice to resolve the situation.
Mr Cudjoe highlighted the Attorney-General’s responsibility to address the government’s negative portrayal and take steps to rectify the situation, or risk leaving a legacy of disunity and disregard for justice.
The Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG), has pointed fingers at the Volta River Authority (VRA) for the ongoing power outages, alleging that it’s due to the VRA’s excessive export of electricity to neighbouring nations.
CEO of IPGG, Dr Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, stated that the VRA is prioritising exporting power to neighbouring countries, neglecting its domestic responsibilities.
According to Dr Apetorgbor, although the VRA has been tasked with exploring export markets to alleviate government idle-capacity burdens, it must do so within legal boundaries.
He emphasised the importance of meeting domestic demand while maintaining the required 18% reserve margin.
Dr Apetorgbor criticised the VRA for exporting hydro-generated electricity to Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin while Ghanaian taxpayers bear the cost of expensive thermal generation, leading to power cuts.
He highlighted that over 200MW is consistently exported, which he deemed illogical.
Meanwhile, citizens, businesses, and households across various parts of the country have been enduring prolonged intermittent power outages.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has faced scrutiny over its stance on LGBTQ+ rights, particularly following President Nana Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to take a clear position on the matter.
This ambiguity was highlighted during Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit to Ghana, where President Akufo-Addo refrained from commenting on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill before parliament.
His recent decision not to sign the bill, despite its passage, citing pending Supreme Court cases, has further fuelled the debate.
In an attempt to dispel rumours of the NPP being pro-LGBTQ, Mr Aboagye, contributing to the discussion on the Bill on TV3 (March 23, 2024), vehemently denied any such tendencies within his party, using his personal beliefs as an example.
“I do not support anybody engaging in gayism. I am not gay. I love women. Honourable Rockson Dafeamepkor and I, we love women. We love women. Women are beautiful. We love women! To suggest that I support gayism. Do you know how much women mean to me? Do you know how much I admire and appreciate women for the things that they bring to us as men?”
According to him, politicians face many forms of stressful situations throughout the day, including receiving phone calls from constituents and subordinates even late into the night. Mr Aboagye believes women are the only reason, politicians are able to survive such stress.
“Honourable Rockson Dafeamepkor and I, as politicians, do you know the stress we go through from morning till evening? Even at midnight? You are sleeping at 1:00 AM and receiving phone calls from constituents. The only thing in this world that calms our nerves and reduces our stress and ensures that all these things do not knock us out of the world earlier than God has given us, is women!”
Vice President Bawumia has been accused of remaining silent on the anti-LGBT+ Bill, which has been in the headlines since Parliament unanimously passed it.
Mr Aboagye’s comments have sparked discussions on what this could mean for Bawumia’s campaign, as they suggest a departure from the party’s perceived ambiguity and could potentially signal a more definitive approach to the LGBTQ+ rights debate within the NPP’s ranks.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) finds itself entangled in a web of silence and revelation regarding its position on LGBTQ rights. As the political landscape heats up, key players have remained cryptic, leaving room for speculation and intrigue.
While many recognize Akosua Frema Osei Opareas Ghana’s first female Chief of Staff and a prominent figure in the current New Patriotic Congress administration, her private life remains shrouded in mystery.
Little is known about her family, marriage, or children. Today, we shine a spotlight on Maataa Opare, her daughter, who has carved out a significant niche for herself away from the public eye.
Maataa Opare, a seasoned banking professional and member of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Board, has quietly operated within the corridors of power, evading any semblance of controversy.
She boasts an impressive resume in finance and law, standing tall as a formidable force in her domain, as she also currently serves as the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary at Fidelity Bank Limited in Accra.
Her career in the legal domain of the financial sector spans over sixteen years, including a stint in property litigation and product liability at Hogan Lovells in the UK.
She is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and has been called to the Bar in Ghana, making her dual jurisdiction qualified.
Since her move to Ghana in 2012, Maataa has been instrumental at Fidelity Bank Limited, where she has played pivotal roles, including the acquisition of ProCredit Savings and Loans and its subsequent integration.

Member of Parliament for Juaboso Constituency, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed worry over Dr Bawumia‘s reluctance to clarify his stance on same-sex marriage.
Akandoh suggests that both the president and vice president are hesitant to support the Anti-LGBT+ bill due to potential financial gains they might lose if it becomes law.
In an interview with UTV, Akandoh emphasised the need for clarity from the Akufo-Addo government regarding their position on LGBT+ issues, particularly questioning Dr. Bawumia’s silence on the matter given his presidential ambitions.
Meanwhile, Nana Bediatuo Asante, Secretary to the President, issued a statement on Monday, March 18, 2024, urging Parliament not to send the recently passed Anti-LGBT+ Bill to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for approval.
The presidency cited ongoing legal challenges, with two applications for an order of interlocutory injunction against the Bill pending before the Supreme Court.
In a letter dated March 18, 2024, the Attorney-General informed President Akufo-Addo about these legal actions, cautioning against transmitting the Bill for assent while the matters are under judicial review.
“It has come to the attention of this Office that while the President and other senior officials of the Presidency were at Peduase for a Cabinet Retreat on Thursday, 14th March 2024, you attempted to submit the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024 (the ‘Bill’) to Jubilee House for the President to signify his assent or otherwise to the Bill,” part of the statement read.
Recent disclosures have shed light on the presence of a counterfeit law enforcer at Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon event. Further insights into the apprehended fake police officer emerge.
On March 18, 2024, the Ghana Police Service disclosed the apprehension of an individual, Hassan Avorgah, for impersonating a police officer.
The police, through their social media platforms, issued a succinct statement announcing the arrest of the culprit, who was found in possession of police attire without proper authorization, thanks to the vigilance of fellow officers.
Contrary to initial reports, Avorgah was apprehended after he purportedly detained an individual and escorted them to the Holy Garden Police Station. However, upon arrival, he failed to furnish accurate credentials, resulting in his arrest.
In addition to donning a police uniform, Avorgah was discovered with various police paraphernalia, including handcuffs, a taser, a pouch, and two mobile phones. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered further law enforcement-related items.
Meanwhile, an interview conducted by Kofi TV with traders at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra has unearthed additional information regarding Avorgah’s activities within the vicinity.
According to traders, Avorgah previously served as a security guard at Circle Mall for nearly a decade before assuming the guise of a police officer upon his return in 2020.
Witnesses recounted instances where Avorgah, purportedly undergoing police training and collaborating with genuine officers, persuaded them of his legitimacy. Furthermore, sightings of police patrol vehicles dropping him off at Circle, where he conducted traffic duties, reinforced this belief.
Notably, Avorgah was reportedly involved in overseeing security during Afua Asantewaa Aduonum’s sing-a-thon event at Akwaaba Village last December.
Speaking to Kofi Adomah Nwanwani of Kofi TV, a trader named Salifu Ibrahim revealed, “He was called Kofi but when he came as a police officer, he converted to Islam. I actually led him to a mallam, who led his conversion. So he later became Hassan.”
Amid the ongoing clash between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and parliament, specifically Speaker Alban Bagbin, over the halt in the approval process for ministerial nominees, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, the Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, has shared his insights on the issue.
The disagreement arises from President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign the recently passed Anti-LGBT+ Bill, raising questions about the legal grounds for Speaker Bagbin’s decision to suspend the approval of the nominees.
Krobea Kwabena Asante, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign team, expressed concerns about the connection between the reassigned ministers and the Speaker’s decision to halt their approvals.
In response, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako stressed the importance of maintaining patience and resilience during times of political discord. He acknowledged the presence of what he termed “legislative comedy” within democracy, indicating that such disagreements are not uncommon and should not cause alarm among citizens.
“Government and governance CAN and MUST continue to RUN! There’s room for ‘legislative comedy’ in democracy. No Alarm for Cause! Sorry, I meant, ‘NO CAUSE FOR ALARM’! Let all citizens stay patient and resilient! Ghana Lives!” he wrote in a Facebook post on March 21, 2024.
On March 20, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declared that the House would not approve the new ministerial appointees, citing the need to uphold the rule of law. Bagbin’s decision followed a letter from the presidency instructing parliament to halt forwarding the Anti-LGBT+ Bill for the president’s assent until a suit against the Bill at the Supreme Court is resolved.
However, Attorney-General Godfred Dame believes that the Speaker of Parliament may have been misled or misinformed, leading to his decision to suspend the approval of the ministerial nominees until after the Supreme Court concludes its review of the suit against the president’s nominations.
