“I wish to inform the public that this afternoon [Sunday] my wife, Dr May Mkhize, and I have tested positive for COVID-19,” Mkhize said in a statement.

“We decided to go test yesterday [Saturday] when I started showing mild symptoms. I was feeling abnormally exhausted and as the day progressed I started losing appetite. My wife had a cough, was dizzy, and extremely exhausted. Given her symptoms, the doctors advised that she must be admitted for observation and rehydration,” he said.

“Our close contacts in the past week have been a few of our family members and some of my health ministry team. He urged all South Africans to continue adhering to health protocols such as wearing face masks, keeping physical distancing, and washing or sanitizing hands.

  • Thomas Partey reveals why he kept his move to Europe secret

Ghana superstar, Thomas Partey has revealed why he kept his move top Europe from his friends with the exception of his father.

The midfielder left Tema Youth at a very tender age to join Atletico Madrid for trials.

So to make sure nothing could jeopardise his dream move, he kept it secret from all of his friends and family, with the exception of his father.

“My dad knew about it but then I told him not to tell anyone,” Partey said. “There was a saying that when everybody knows about your move, they can disturb you. That’s mostly in Ghana because I was playing with my friends and you never know what someone is thinking, so we just had to keep it secret until everyone saw it.

“I wanted to play outside Ghana and I was focused on playing with the great people we saw on TV because we used to watch La Liga, the Premier League, so many leagues. All my inspirations played in that league.

“Moving to Spain taught me a lot and I’ve learnt a lot from it, how to take decisions on my own, how to be perfect, how to try to go through hell. But then you know that after the hell, you have important things ahead that you can enjoy.

“I’ll always take those challenges and I know that with all these challenges, you’ll be able to make it.”

Partey made his debut on Saturday against Manchester City.

  • Edmund Addo nets as Senica suffer defeat to Ruzomberok

Skillful midfielder, Edmund Addo was on the scoresheet for FK Senica when they visited Ruzomberok on matchday 10 of the Slovak Super Liga last Saturday.

The 20-year-old put his team ahead in the 54th minute after a pulsating first half ended goalless. Addo smashed home from a corner kick after Ruzomberok’s defense failed to deal with the cross from a seemingly lack of concentration.

Edmund Addo was fortunate as the ball fell to him at right place at the right time, to put joy in the hearts of his teammates and smile on their face in what looked like a hard-earned victory for the visitors.

Unfortunately, there was no glory in sight for the away team, as the home side pulled level in the 87 minute. Ruzomberok threw caution to the wind a minute later to secure a win through an own goal by Senica defender Jose Carrillo.

Edmund, who is deployed in a center back role, lasted the entire 90 minutes and has registered his third goal of the season in 10 matches.

  • Black Stars coronavirus positive cases hit five after friendlies, European clubs on alert

Germany-based defender Kasim Nuhu became the fifth person from the Ghana team to test positive for coronavirus following last week’s friendlies against Mali and Qatar while striker Caleb Ekuban has been hospitalised over symptoms of the disease.

With the sudden rise in the number of confirmed positive cases in the team, it is certain that players and officials of the team that travelled for the two matches will now face the real prospect of quarantining over the growing cases.

Several clubs in Europe who had their players play in the two matches for Ghana during the international break are now racing to contact the Ghana FA over the cases while also carrying out their independent tests.

The Black Stars Coronavirus cases reached five on Sunday after it became clear that Hoffenheim defender Kasim Adams has joined the growing number of players in the Ghana team that had contracted the virus.

Vitoria Guimaraes left-back Gideon Mensah, Spain-based defender Joseph Aidoo and Besiktas midfielder Bernard Mensah as well as Black Stars management committee member Jones Abu Alhassan were confirmed to have contracted the virus during the training camp in Turkey.

Apart from the five players confirmed to have contracted the virus, Ekuban has been hospitalised in Turkey after showing strong symptoms of coronavirus with a very high temperature.

The 26-year-old was also the room-mate of Bernard Mensah during the Black Stars one-week training camp in the Turkish city of Antalya and the Besiktas midfielder has tested positive for the deadly disease.

However, the tests on Ekuban came out negative and doctors are not leaving anything to chance and have asked him to quarantine himself at home while he is monitored.

The latest revelation will raise serious concerns for the Ghana football authorities who would be in the race to discover the full extent of infections in the team when they played the matches against Mali and Qatar.

Fears over the Black Stars were raised when four players from the Mali side were confirmed to have contracted the virus and it was feared it could be spread to the Ghana national team when they played their West African rivals.

The full extent would be known this weekend when all players would have returned to their club sides where they are likely to face more stringent tests.

It will also give the Ghana FA the idea on how to prepare and protect its players and officials during their upcoming matches in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Mr Mahama promised free TVET at all levels, which he believed would aid in the training of more skilled human resources for national development and noted that “NDC will not pay lip service to TVET because the training will move this country to the next level.”

He said his vision was to implement inclusive and sustainable-development that cuts across all sectors and reiterated his determination to complete all abandoned projects.

  • Incorporate LED activities in guidelines for assessing MMDAs – MCE

Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive has called for the incorporation of Local Economic Development (LED) in the guidelines used in assessing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He said this would task the MMDAs to prioritise their programmes and activities to create jobs by building on the comparative advantages and the unique characteristics of their localities.

Mr Sowah made the call when he presented the 2021 – 2024 Composite Budget of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly at the launch of the Annual Regional Budget hearing of the MMDAs in Accra.

It was organised by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.

The Annual Regional Budget hearing was instituted in 2011 and forms part of the fiscal decentralization reforms to provide an opportunity for the MMDAs to review their performance and discuss priority programmes and projects in the coming year within the national framework.

Mr Sowah expressed concern about the inability to properly situate the LED within the functions of the assemblies, which formed part of the criteria used in the division of the local authority into smaller jurisdictions.

“We are not too sure where the Ministry of Local Government wants to situate the LED within the functions of the assemblies. There are three main criteria used for the creation of assemblies but the main element of economic viability is not considered as a priority, hence, the emphasis on the issue,” he said.

The fate of the 10 persons standing trial for allegedly plotting a coup to destabilise the country and possibly overthrow the government is still undecided as the jury is not fully constituted.

Dr. Mac-Palm, Kafui, Debrah, Dekuwine, Abubakar, L/Col Akanpewon and Zikpi have pleaded not guilty to the charge of treason felony and conspiracy to commit treason felony, while Dr. Mac-Palm and Kafui have separately pleaded not guilty to the charge of conspiracy to possess explosives and ammunition without lawful excuse, and possession of explosives and ammunition without lawful excuse.

Col. Gameli and ACP Dr. Agordzo have pleaded not guilty to the charge of abetment in a treason felony.

    Background

The 10 who are part of a group known as TAG, an NGO, are alleged to have planned on demonstrating against the Government of Ghana and “possibly take over the government”.

Prosecutors say the group had a map in their possession when they were arrested with some important state installations targeted.

The alleged state institutions targeted are the Jubilee House, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Burma Camp, the 37 Military Hospital and the National Police Training School.

Dr. Mac-Palm, Kafui and Debrah as part of the alleged coup plot had planned on kidnapping the President, the Vice-President, the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief of the Defence Staff and force the President to announce his overthrow.

“Again, there were discussions on whether or not to kill the President in the process of overthrowing the government,” the prosecutors added.

The prosecution indicated that in June 2018, the security agencies picked up intelligence that the accused persons had planned to overthrow and take over the government.

Col. Gameli is said to have recruited Zikpi, who was a signal specialist with the GAF, to help jam the radio signals of the National Communications Authority with the exception of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The prosecution said in furtherance of the plot, Dr. Mac-Palm invited Kafui, who was a blacksmith at Alavanyo, to Accra to manufacture explosives and pistols for TAG.

The prosecution added that ACP Dr. Agordzo donated GH¢2,000 to TAG to aid in its cause and also drafted a speech for Dr. Mac-Palm to be read at the planned demonstration by TAG.

  • Police protection: MPs not being given preferential treatment OB Amoah

Following the public disagreement that has met the decision to give Members of Parliament personal police protection, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Osei Bonsu Amoah has downplayed assertions that the move is a preferential treatment being given to members of the legislature.

OB Amoah who is a member of Parliaments Subsidiary Legislation Committee has urged Ghanaians to do away with the notion that Members of Parliament are being given a preferential treatment with the deployment of police officers to serve as their individual personal bodyguards considering their role in governance.

“It is only when you move to the Executive before they think about security. But when you are part of the legislature, your security as far as escort and detail are concerned, may be looked at differently. So if the Ministry of Interior thinks that, this should be addressed, I think it is in the right direction. The public should not see it as giving preferential treatment to certain persons. Because we are public persons and play a major role in our governance system,” the MP is reported to have told Citi Fm.

The Minister of Interior, Ambrose Derry announced in parliament that about 800 police officers will be deployed to provide security at the residence of MPs well as bodyguarding service.

This means every MP will eventually receive 3 officers, two of whom will provide security at their private residence while the remaining officer will provide bodyguarding services.

Until the Ghana Police Service is ready to provide the full complement of the 800 plus police officers to be attached to the Parliamentary Protection Unit, the police in the interim have made available 200 officers who will serve as bodyguards to the MPs.

This action comes after the murder of the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ekow Quansah Hayford in a suspected highway robbery attack which prompted the leadership of parliament to invite the Interior Minister to provide a detailed plan for the protection of MPs.

Even though Members of Parliament and the government have justified the decision to provide personal security for MPs, Civil Society groups, security analysts and other Ghanaians are criticizing the move as selfish and self-serving.

  • New GSS Act will address misrepresentation in reporting statistics – Prof. Samuel Annim

Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician says the new Statistical Service Act (Act 1003)passed in 2019 will help address challenges in misreporting and misrepresentation in statistics.

Prof. Annim said, under the Act, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) would collaborate with the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) every year to ensure that all generated statistics designated as national information would be used by all stakeholders as the authentic data for national discourse.

This, he explained would help differentiate between the national data generated by the GSS and experimental data by other institutions or civil societies.

The Government Statistician said this on Thursday at a workshop on data interpretation and communication for selected media practitioners specialised in business reporting.

The programme was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the GSS.

“We will be developing a code of practice and ethics under the Act, which will bind all MDAs in the country to follow specific standards for generating data”, he said.

Prof. Annim said the Act served as a strategic mechanism for harnessing the changes in the approaches used by the GSS to collect and produce statistical information at the national level.

This, he said included new ways and use of non-traditional statistical information and data such as big data, satellite imagery, administrative data, and commercial data.

Prof. Annim said the GSS was running a project with Parliament to build the capacity of its research department and said discussions were far advanced to have a desk in Parliament to help Parliamentarians to be abreast with statistics for effective and efficient decision-making.

He said that was part of the Service’s five-year Corporate Plan (2020-2024), which outlined an ambitious journey for the Service with a concentrated and revitalized effort.

Ms Praise Nutakor, the Head of Communications, UNDP said the training was necessitated because GSS and UNDP often produced research reports on various aspects of development to inform policy decisions.

She, however, said such data was sometimes misinterpreted and misrepresented out of context.

Ms Nutakor said the training would help improve the knowledge and understanding of journalists on how to effectively communicate the results of data analysis and also get the basic understanding of statistical methods and terminologies.

The court issued the injunction on 9 October 2020.

“The Awoamefia stool rotates between two clans the Bate Clan and the Royal Adzovia Clan.

“Togbe Adaladza II was from the Bate Clan so the next Awoamefia must come from the Royal Adzovia Clan.

“1st Respondent’s father hails from Hohoe District and his mother hails from Akatsi District.

“Nevertheless, the 1st respondent managed to get himself to be made the Awoamefia of the Anlo state,” the document detailed.

The document further stated that representatives of the Royal Adzovia Clan presented a petition against him, but to no avail.

Contempt charges were also pressed against him.

“But still, he soldiers on, defiant, that he is the Awoamefia, and even dares to contest elections to become the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs,” the document added.

Togbe Tepre IV of Anfoega emerged as the new president of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs at the end of the poll.

Out of a total of 52 votes, Togbe Tepre, who was the Vice-President to the then-Soglo Alloh IV (now part of Oti) polled 34 votes and Togbe Sri got 18 votes.
