Dome Parakou residents protest poor drainage, block road

Angry residents near the Dome Parakou Estate Junction blocked a major road to protest a poorly constructed drainage system installed months ago.

The residents claim the construction was inadequate, leaving them vulnerable to flooding whenever it rains heavily. They report that the substandard drainage causes their homes to flood, resulting in property damage.

“It was around 3:30 am that the rain started and the rainwaters came and flooded everywhere. I am a mechanic and I am lucky that there were no cars here when the flood came else it would have spoilt them.

“The contractor working on the bridge is to blame. The bridge is too small, he should have raised it and so we are begging the government to let him raise the bridge just like it has been done at Alajo and Achimota,” a resident, Enoch Sarpei told Channel One TV‘s Samuel Ackom.

The Municipal Director for Ga East of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Seth Kofi Osei Kissi, noted that efforts to educate the residents about the risks and to encourage them to relocate have been ongoing but met with resistance.

“I had a distress call around 5:30 am that residents of Christian Village, a community at the boundary between Dome-Kwabenya and Okaikoi North have blocked the road with containers and barrels and cars were not moving meanwhile that place is a busy point and so there was heavy traffic there in the morning. It took the intervention of one NADMO man who engaged the people before they could move things and allow traffic to follow.

“We have gone there to educate them that the rains will be heavy this year and so they should move away from there because when it rains, it floods there up to window level but they are still living there.”

Tablet distribution for SHS students takes off in Ashanti Region

On Wednesday, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially launched the distribution of the government’s Tablet Computers to Senior High School (SHS) students in Kumasi.

This initiative is part of the government’s One Student One Tablet Programme, aimed at accelerating ICT-aided teaching and learning, and is implemented by the Ministry of Education.

The programme plans to provide free tablets to approximately 1.2 million public senior high school students.

It was initially launched by President Akufo-Addo in March in Accra as part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, which seeks to transform existing school facilities into Smart Schools and build new structures where needed.

In addition to students, teachers and staff of the Ghana Education Service will receive free laptops under a separate arrangement to facilitate research, teaching, and learning. Both laptops and tablets come preloaded with learning materials, including textbooks.

During the ceremony, Vice President Bawumia also inaugurated the Nana Akufo-Addo Smart Block at Opoku Ware School. This block is equipped with digital devices such as Smart Boards, computers, and internet access, making it the first Smart School under the Ghana Smart Schools Project.

Addressing the event, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a digitally modernized learning environment in senior high schools nationwide. He highlighted the importance of digital reforms in ensuring students are prepared for the fourth industrial revolution.

He described the occasion as historic, noting, “Ghana is among few countries in the world where government has supplied students with Tablet computers and this is to ensure the future does not elude our children”.

“Ghanaian students must face the 4th industrial revolution with a sense of pride and a mindset for growth”, he said to a cheering crowd of students.

The Headmaster of the school who is also the National President of the Conference of the Heads of Assisted Schools (CHASS), Rev. Fr. Steven Owusu Sekyere pledged a good use for the facilities.

Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwi, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also spoke at the event, stressing that Ghanaian students must embrace the digital age with pride and a growth mindset.

The Headmaster of Opoku Ware School and National President of the Conference of the Heads of Assisted Schools (CHASS), Rev. Fr. Steven Owusu Sekyere, pledged to ensure the facilities are used responsibly and effectively.

Bishop Gabriel Yaw Anokye of the Catholic Church in Kumasi commended the government for its efforts to transform educational institutions.

Vice President Bawumia personally handed out tablets to some students, with all senior high schools in the region expected to receive their tablets soon.

The distribution of tablets began in March, with many schools already having distributed them under various phases of the project.

The Ghana Smart Schools Project aims to enhance the quality, delivery, and outcomes of the Free Senior High Schools Programme, also known as Free SHS.

The government has also announced plans to introduce the Free SHS Act in Parliament to provide legislative backing for the programme.

NPP govt has been the first in the 4th republic to reduce electricity costs – Majority

Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has highlighted the unique achievement of the Akufo-Addo administration in being the sole government in Ghana’s 4th republic to enact a reduction in electricity tariffs.

He emphasized that this action signifies the government’s dedication to easing the burdens faced by the Ghanaian populace.

Speaking on the floor of parliament on June 11, he said “This government acknowledges that our people face various forms of challenges. It is in light of this that history will remember this government as the only government in the 4th republic to reduce electricity tariffs. In 2018, the government of Ghana announced various tariff reductions ranging from 18 to 30 per cent. It is a matter of record, and this has never happened in the history of Ghana.”

Afenyo-Markin also revealed that the government is in the process of introducing a bill to parliament soon to regulate the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

This endeavor is designed to ensure the sustainability of the Free SHS program amidst apprehensions about potential modifications by future administrations.

The Free SHS policy has been a cornerstone of the Akufo-Addo government’s educational reforms, providing no-cost secondary education to all Ghanaian students.

The proposed legislation aims to solidify the policy’s framework, shielding it from potential revisions that could undermine its goals.

Make your policies detailed and transparent to earn voters’ trust – Otumfuo to Bawumia

As part of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia tour to the Ashanti Region, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II provided with valuable guidance, stressing the critical importance of transparency and detailed policy communication in winning the trust of potential voters for his potential presidency.

Acknowledging the ongoing development journey, the Asantehene emphasized the Vice President’s duty to articulate clear strategies that would further the achievements of the current NPP administration.

Highlighting the essential role of presenting future plans, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II underlined the significance of the NPP Flagbearer’s communication in securing the confidence of Ghanaian voters.

He also urged the Vice President’s advisors to offer robust support and guidance to help him achieve his goals.

“…What matters is for you to let Ghanaians know that if they follow him if he is elected president, he can make changes for Ghana to grow. He should accord Ghanaians due respect and carefully outline his policies for Ghanaians to know what he wants to bring on board.

“If you continue making known and explaining the policies you want to bring on board if elected and if they are true and God permits and Ghanaians listen and give you the nod, I am sure you will do them for Ghana to grow for us. Other parties want to govern so let us understand your policies well.”

“…Let Ghanaians know that there is a shortfall here but when I am elected, I will work on it. When you do things like that, they will believe you. But if you are only poised to come and rule then it will not work,” he advised during the Vice President’s visit as part of his Ashanti Region tour.

We’re not against Free SHS Bill – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has declared its endorsement of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) Bill, pending its presentation to Parliament.

This decision is aimed at dispelling speculations suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to revoke the policy if it assumes power in the future.

Member of Parliament for Builsa South and Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, highlighted in a statement that the Minority does not oppose FSHS and welcomes the proposed bill.

He emphasized that the bill would bind future governments to uphold the policy. Dr. Apaak also referenced former President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to enhancing the implementation of FSHS, addressing issues such as inadequate infrastructure, food quality, and irregular academic calendars.

While awaiting the details of the bill, Mr. Apaak stated that the Minority supports the initiative in principle, aiming to secure the future of FSHS.

The government is poised to introduce the Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill to Parliament shortly, with the objective of regulating the policy and ensuring its sustainability.

During a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, June 11, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin revealed that the bill aims to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the policy, aligning with the principles outlined in Chapter 5 of the Constitution.

Find below the statement by the Minority

WE ARE NOT OPPOSED TO A BILL ON FSHS BILL

We are not opposed to FSHS and therefore can not be opposed to a proposed bill to bind future government to it. As John Dramani Mahama noted during his meeting with the national leadership of CHASS on May 8th, 2024, he will work with them and all stakeholders to make FSHS better.

Our Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has indicated time without number that, the FSHS policy is a good policy bedevilled with implementation challenges: inadequate academic and residential infrastructure; inadequate and poor quality food; inadequate furniture; erratic academic calendar, among others. John Dramani Mahama has pledged to address these challenges to make FSHS better.

So, while we wait to see the proposed bill and examine its contents in detail, in principle, we have no challenge supporting a bill seeking to ensure its future.

I’ve worked hard as Veep, it’s time to make me President – Bawumia to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized his deservingness of becoming Ghana’s president.

According to him, his diligent service as Vice President warrants him the opportunity to be Ghana’s president.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, speaking at the Youth Connect event in the Ashanti Region, highlighted his unmatched work ethic among past Vice Presidents in the nation’s fourth republic.

He asserted, “The reason why I want to become President is that I’ve worked so hard as a Vice President. My work speaks for itself. If you compare the various Vice Presidents under the Fourth Republic, you can tell that my work rate stands out.

“If you ask John Mahama to point out even one policy initiative he spearheaded as Vice President he can’t point out. I have 33 policies I’ve spearheaded. So the score is 33-0. So please promote me to become president because I’ve passed as Vice President,” he said to a charged crowd in the Ashanti Region.

Comparatively, my track record speaks volumes. Among the Vice Presidents of the Fourth Republic, my commitment stands out prominently.”

Drawing a sharp contrast, he challenged his predecessor, stating, “While my initiatives tally up to 33, John Mahama can’t pinpoint even one policy he championed as Vice President. It’s a clear score of 33-0.”

Bawumia underscored the significance of accountability, noting his eight-year window for seeking the people’s mandate versus Mahama’s four years. He stressed the importance of continuous accountability, signaling his readiness to remain answerable to Ghanaians even beyond his current term, contrasting this with what he perceives as a “honeymoon” request from his opponent.

“The reason why I want to become President is that I’ve worked so hard as a Vice President. My work speaks for itself. If you compare the various Vice Presidents under the Fourth Republic, you can tell that my work rate stands out.

NPP’s PC for Amenfi East arrested for inciting attacks on security personnel

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi East Constituency, Mr. Ernest Frimpong, has presented himself at the Regional Police Station in Tarkwa.

A widely circulated video on social media showed him allegedly encouraging illegal miners (galamsayers) to resist and attack soldiers patrolling their sites.

In the video, Mr. Frimpong purportedly claims that government initiatives such as #OperationGalamStop, #OperationVanguard, #OperationHalt I & II have been suspended, implying a green light for galamsayers to mine without interference from law enforcement, particularly the Police and Military.

Furthermore, Mr. Frimpong promises to establish a WhatsApp platform for miners to report encounters with uniformed personnel, including soldiers, and pledges swift action from local authorities. He allegedly urges galamsayers to confront any officer attempting to halt their activities.

The National Democratic Congress has condemned the video, urging the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to address Mr. Frimpong’s statements, which they argue could endanger security personnel.

Following his appearance at the Western Regional Police Command, Mr. Frimpong has been questioned, charged, and is currently seeking Police inquiry bail. The Municipal Chief Executive for Amenfi East, Hon.

Frederick Korankye, confirms Mr. Frimpong’s engagement with legal counsel to secure bail and cooperate with the investigation.

Hon. Korankye maintains that the recorded audio, dated approximately two months prior, does not promote violence against Military personnel.

“He was invited, my brother let me make this thing clear. The meeting went on two months ago so when he was invited he was not in the constituency. He was in Kumasi and came yesterday so he is with the Police and I’m sure he will be granted bail today. You can talk to the Regional crime officer about the charges,” Hon. Frederick Korankye said.

He clarifies that Mr. Frimpong was not present in the constituency when invited by authorities, indicating that awareness of the video’s contents only emerged recently, prompting Police action.

Don’t interrupt the court’s work – Ambulance case judge tells lawyers

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, who is presiding over the high-profile financial crime case involving Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson, has urged all parties involved to assist in expediting the proceedings.

In response to a notification from Mr Forson’s legal representatives regarding his occasional absence from court due to legislative duties, the judge expressed reluctance, likening Forson’s position to that of a senior housemaster.

Reported by the state-owned Daily Graphic, the judge questioned Forson’s inability to attend court, drawing a parallel with a hypothetical scenario where a senior housemaster would prioritize other responsibilities over court proceedings.

While acknowledging her respect for Forson’s role as Minority Leader, the judge emphasized that Forson is a crucial defendant in the case, not merely a witness.

She urged cooperation in swiftly concluding the case to allow everyone to attend to their respective duties.

The report further detailed the judge’s discussion on the impact of Richard Jakpa’s decision to change legal representation during the trial, which disrupted plans to conclude proceedings by May 2024.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has pledged to accompany Forson to court whenever necessary, potentially affecting parliamentary proceedings.

Forson and Jakpa face criminal charges related to the procurement of ambulances during the John Evans Atta Mills administration, with Forson serving as Deputy Minister of Finance at the time and Jakpa representing the contracted company.

The court is scheduled to rule on June 13 regarding the admissibility of a viral audio tape allegedly involving the Attorney-General discussing matters pertaining to the case with Jakpa.

Both defendants are accused of causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in the ambulance procurement deal.

Schengen visa fees for Ghanaians increases by 12%

The European Commission, a body within the European Union (EU) responsible for executive functions, has declared a 12% rise in application fees for short-stay Schengen visas (type C) to its member nations, effective Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

Foreign adults, including Ghanaians, are now required to pay €90, marking a €10 surge from the previous €80 for a Schengen visa.

Children aged 6 to 12 will also be charged €45 for a visa, reflecting a €5 increase from the previous €40 fee. However, visas for children under 6 remain complimentary, according to graphic.com.gh.

The European Commission cited the “general Union-wide inflation rate and the weighted average of the salaries of Member States’ civil servants between July 1, 2020, and July 1, 2023” as reasons for the Schengen visa cost hike.

Schengen visas permit non-European Union citizens to travel to any member country within the Schengen zone for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period.

Although facilitating travel across all Schengen countries during its validity, this visa does not authorize stays exceeding 90 days or engagement in employment/business activities within the zone.

The Schengen area comprises 26 European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, which have eliminated internal border controls.

Per the report by graphic.com.gh, visa agencies and travel companies have the discretion to increase their service fees for handling Schengen visa applications from €40 to €45.

Furthermore, the cost of extending a Schengen visa remains unchanged at €30.

Enough of the pressure, leave Bawumia to decide on his running mate – Hackman Owusu to NPP

The Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu Agyemang, has voiced his concerns regarding the mounting pressure on the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to select his running mate for the forthcoming 2024 presidential election.

He underscored the pivotal role of the flagbearer, whose name appears on the ballot paper, and advocated for Dr. Bawumia to have the autonomy to choose a running mate whom he believes will enhance the party’s prospects for success on December 7, 2024.

Mr Owusu urged party members to refrain from imposing undue pressure on Dr. Bawumia and to afford him the opportunity to conduct consultations before arriving at a decision on his running mate.

“The pressure on the NPP presidential candidate from the media and others is unwarranted. He [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] is the one whose name will be on the ballot paper. I don’t believe elections are won by vice presidents; they play a role, but we should give Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the space and time to consider all options, travel across the country, and consult properly before deciding on his running mate.”

Owusu continued, “I appeal to our [NPP] members, and to the nation, that Dr. Bawumia needs room to go through the process, and the pressure on him is unnecessary. We should not push him so hard.”

Various potential running mates have been mentioned, including Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST); Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua indicated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will announce his running mate by the end of July.

During an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Kodua stressed that the decision on the running mate will be made before July.

“I have had discussions with many individuals, including Dr. Bawumia. It is clear to me that we announced our running mate in August previously, but it did not benefit us. This time, as we aim to ‘break the 8’, we must avoid repeating past mistakes,” he remarked.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has suggested that despite Ghana’s current economic volatility, voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December polls will exacerbate the challenges.

Speaking to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Suame Magazine, he emphasized that while he is fully informed about the country’s affairs, he believes that granting the NPP another opportunity will foster a conducive environment for all.

Mr Agyapong highlighted the NPP’s Free Senior High School (SHS) program, acknowledging its controversial inception but asserting that it has provided opportunities for disadvantaged students to pursue their education.

He urged voters to consider the benefits of the free SHS policy for their children and future generations.

“As a result of NPP’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, needy Ghanaian students have been to enroll is high schools. Of course the economy is suffering, I can attest to that. However, when you are going to vote come December 7, think about the benefits your children will derive from the Free SHS programme”.

In conclusion, he asserted that the NDC cannot offer a promising future for Ghanaian children.”

Guinness to leave Nigeria after 75 years of operations

Guinness is set to join a growing list of multinationals exiting Nigeria due to an increasingly hostile economic environment.

Companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Microsoft have already left the country for similar reasons.

After operating in Nigeria since 1950, Guinness has announced its departure, attributing the decision to the severe economic conditions exacerbated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

On Tuesday, Guinness revealed plans to sell its controlling shares to the Singaporean conglomerate Tolaram Group.

The brewery brand reported a substantial N61.9 billion loss after tax from July 2023 to March 2024, following President Tinubu’s decision to float the naira in an attempt to unify the currency’s value on both official and parallel foreign exchange markets.

This policy move backfired, causing significant financial setbacks for many multinational companies, including Guinness Nigeria, which saw its N61.7 billion loss after tax in Q3—a stark contrast to the N5.9 billion profit reported in the same period the previous year.

The continued depreciation of the naira likely influenced Diageo, Guinness’ parent company, to sell its 58.02 percent majority stake to Tolaram Group.

“Under the terms of an agreement signed today, 11 June 2024, Tolaram will acquire Diageo’s 58.02% shareholding in Guinness Nigeria royalty agreements for the continued production of the Guinness brand and its locally manufactured Diageo ready-to-drink and mainstream spirits brands,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Guinness Nigeria Plc, listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, was incorporated on April 29, 1950, initially importing Guinness Stout from Dublin. With Tolaram’s acquisition expected to conclude by 2025, Guinness will have marked 75 years in Nigeria.

In their statement, Guinness confirmed it would leave Nigeria next year, transitioning operations to a third-party venture.

“The transaction is expected to be completed during fiscal 2025, subject to obtaining the requisite regulatory approvals in Nigeria,” said the statement signed by Abidemi Ademola, Guinness’s legal director.

Diageo emphasized that this sale would not affect its ownership of the Guinness global brand. The company “will retain ownership of the Guinness brand, which will be licensed to Guinness Nigeria for the long term.”

Diageo’s departure adds to a list of multinationals like GlaxoSmithKline and Microsoft that have exited Nigeria in recent years, citing unprofitable business conditions due to the challenging economic climate.

Diageo “will retain ownership of the Guinness brand, which will be licensed to Guinness Nigeria for the long term.”

Popular Diageo brands in Nigeria include Smirnoff Ice, Smirnoff Vodka, Orijin Bitters, Malta Guinness, Gordons Orange Sunset, and Dubic Malt.

  • Cocobod had no money when I took over as CEO – Joseph Boahen

Cocobod had no money when I took over as CEO – Joseph Boahen

The CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has revealed the substantial financial hurdles he confronted upon assuming office in January 2017.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Aidoo disclosed that despite the previous administration securing $1.8 billion in 2016, there were no remaining funds when he assumed leadership of Cocobod.

He explained that the funds had been utilized for purchasing cocoa and covering operational expenses.

“They bought about 600,000 metric tonnes before we came in. With cocoa, the peak harvest period is October, November, December, and January. So within the first quarter of the season, from October to December 2016, the previous administration bought over 600,000 metric tonnes.

“When we assumed office, there was no money, meanwhile, we had to buy cocoa till the end of the season from January to September,” he said.

Upon taking office, Mr. Aidoo observed that Cocobod was confronted with the formidable challenge of continuing cocoa purchases without any funds.

He indicated that the most viable solution was for Cocobod to seek help from the Bank of Ghana.

“We were forced to go to the Bank of Ghana to borrow. Within that period, we bought over 300,000 metric tonnes and we had to pay the farmers, we had to pay for haulage, the buyer’s margin, and operational costs.

“We sought help from the Bank of Ghana who became an intermediary between the Board and the consolidated banks and we got over GH₵2 billion,”he explained.

Ghana’s cocoa industry has grappled with adverse weather conditions, bean diseases, and illegal gold mining, which often displaces cocoa farms.

Additionally, Ghanaian farmers have been smuggling more beans to neighboring countries to capitalize on higher prices, further depleting the available crop for domestic delivery.

Reports indicate that Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, is contemplating delaying the delivery of up to 350,000 tons of beans to the next season due to poor crops.

Consequently, chocolate makers worldwide are increasing prices for consumers in response to cocoa prices doubling this year, driven by a third consecutive year of poor harvests in Ghana and Ivory Coast, which together account for 60% of global production.

His well-timed and coordinated moves added flair to the event, drawing attention to his campaign message.

  • Osafo-Maafo fingered once again in Opuni/Agongo trial

Osafo-Maafo fingered once again in Opuni/Agongo trial

In the ongoing trial of former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr. Stephen Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo, fresh revelations have emerged regarding the involvement of former Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo in initiating their prosecution.

Notably, one of Mr. Osafo-Maafo’s relatives, Evelyn Keelson, serves as a state attorney prosecuting the case. Despite this, Osafo-Maafo maintains his position as Senior Presidential Advisor in the Akufo-Addo government.

During proceedings presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, it was disclosed that Mr. Osafo-Maafo convened a meeting in his office in 2017 to discuss the controversial lithovit liquid fertilizer at the center of the trial.

Head of the Material Science Department at the Ghana Standards Authority, Genevieve Baah Mante, testified as a subpoenaed witness of Seidu Agongo, shedding light on the meeting’s discussions.

“We discussed the results of the two institutions (Ghana Standards Authority and the University of Ghana’s Chemistry Department) and pointed out possible discrepancies in the reports. These included different batch numbers of the same sample supplied to the different institutions.

“The second was the difference in environmental and testing conditions. And the third was the protocol used in testing the samples.

“The fourth was how the sample was sampled (picked). The two institutions requested further testing of the samples.”

Counsel for Mr Agongo, Benson Nutsukpui, then asked the witness, “All these you just told the court took place in Honourable Osafo-Maafo’s office?”

Mrs Genevieve Baah Mante answered in the affirmative, “Yes, my lord”.

The trial involves Dr. Opuni, Mr. Agongo, and Agricult Ghana Limited facing multiple charges related to the purchase of Lithovit Liquid Fertilizer between 2014 and 2016, including defrauding by false pretences and willfully causing financial loss to the state.

According to Mrs. Baah Mante, the meeting in Osafo-Maafo’s office involved officials from COCOBOD and the Chemistry Department of the University of Ghana.

They deliberated on discrepancies between test results from different institutions regarding the fertilizer.

It was revealed that Osafo-Maafo’s involvement in the prosecution stemmed from a petition he submitted to the police CID in 2017, effectively halting an ongoing EOCO investigation into the matter.

Despite the presence of a substantive Minister of Finance overseeing COCOBOD affairs, Osafo-Maafo’s petition led to the CID taking over the investigation, raising questions about his locus in the matter.

When the investigator was asked about the locus and by what authority Yaw Osafo-Maafo petitioned the police when there was a substantive minister who had oversight on COCOBOD affairs, he replied:

“My Lord, during the transition, investigation of agencies were conducted and on one of this sub committees which did the investigation recommended that investigation should be conducted into the activities of A1 during his tenure as the CEO of Ghana COCOBOD. It is on this basis that the Senior Minister signed this petition.”

The trial has drawn attention to Osafo-Maafo’s active involvement in COCOBOD affairs and his niece’s role as a prosecutor, adding complexity to the legal proceedings.

The revelations underscore the significance of the 2017 meeting convened by Osafo-Maafo, which followed conflicting test results regarding the efficacy of the lithovit fertilizer.

Mrs. Baah Mante clarified that her department’s testing confirmed the presence of essential nutrients in the fertilizer, consistent with fertilizer standards.

However, the absence of specific cocoa fertilizer standards in Ghana prevented a conclusive assessment of its suitability for cocoa.

The testimony sheds light on the standards development process at the Ghana Standards Authority, emphasizing stakeholder involvement and adherence to international standards.

Bawumia offers GHS200k to assist Kejetia market fire victims

The Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended a donation of GH¢200,000 to support the victims of the Kumasi Kejetia market fire.

The devastating fire, which erupted on March 15, 2023, impacted around 50 shops, leaving 33 completely destroyed.

During his visit to the market on March 20, 2023, Dr. Bawumia assured the victims of government assistance to help them restart their businesses. However, this promise had remained unfulfilled until now.

As part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti region, Dr. Bawumia handed over the GH¢200,000 donation to the affected traders on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, announced the donation.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for urgent and collaborative efforts in fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to members of the House.

In his opening address following Parliament’s return from break on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the Speaker expressed concern over recent events in the country, particularly regarding security issues during the limited voter registration exercise.

“The signs and signals of happenings in the country do not assure hope. I shudder when I am told that people going to register carry knives and guns, just to go and write names.

“What about when we are going to vote, and at the end of it all, the results are announced, and someone else has carried the day and not the other? I shudder to picture what will happen,” he said.

The Speaker also highlighted the dire state of the youth in the country, emphasizing the urgent need to address issues such as employment to prevent further deterioration.

“Apart from that, the joblessness, the homelessness, and the hopelessness of the youth cannot be taken lightly. We must act together and now to prevent a journey to calamity or a journey of no return,” he stated.

He announced that he would lead the legislature in taking steps to engage stakeholders to ensure a free and fair presidential and parliamentary election on December 7, 2024.

This initiative aims to prevent any breaches of peace and stability that could arise from a disputed election.

Alban Bagbin revealed that the parliamentary team, along with prominent clergy members, will engage with the Electoral Commission (EC), the Police, the National Security Council, presidential candidates, party executives, and others, all with the goal of securing a peaceful election.

Joint action needed to stop illegal land leases – Nadu Klortey Wulomo to govt

The Nadu Klortey Wulomo of Osu, Wor-Lumor Boni Nuumo Noi Osekan Kpenuku II, has urged the government to collaborate with Osu GaDangme lands and allodial owners to ensure transparency in transactions involving lands held in trust or leased unlawfully.

In a statement, Wor-Lumor Boni Nuumo Noi Osekan Kpenuku II expressed readiness to work with the government, businesses, and other stakeholders for the development of Osu GaDangme.

However, he emphasized the importance of an equitable partnership, where the voices of the community are heard, ownership rights respected, and the interests of the people protected.

The Wulomo highlighted the potential benefits of collaboration, including the alignment of visions and the co-creation of solutions that benefit all parties.

He stressed the importance of judicious land use and the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations through the creation of new opportunities.

Furthermore, the Wulomo called for transparency and accountability in land transactions, particularly those involving lands held in trust or leased illegally. He emphasized the need to address these issues collectively to move forward as a united nation.

Read Nadu Klortey Wulomo in Osu:

On Achimota Lands, the Achimota College (Cambridge College as it was then known) acquired about 770 acres of Osu lands to set up a school. Only 447 acres were used, leaving 323 acres. Osu was in court and got 172.26 acres from the judgement toward the socio-economic development of its people.

This matter travelled to the Supreme Court and the matter was ruled in favour of Osu; like the proverbial ‘Kwaku Ananse’ stories, various documents and adverse claims started popping out from people and families who claimed to be clients of Nana Akufo Addo’s Law firm.

Then again, the minister of land and mineral resources of the Nana Akufo Addo’s government came out with a statement on the Achimota Forest which forms part of Osu lands, purported to be a government land taken over with the power of legislation.

Again, regarding lands near 37 Military Hospital, the trotro station and the military base ordinance towards the airport ordained for the second phase of the airport city development, we were excluded from government plans to unilaterally allocate these ancestral lands (which were required for military facilities) to unique Development Company Limited, which we have evidence of.

Similar opacity surrounds the Airport city lands, which were sold off-market for 89 million dollars to foreign entities like Heaven Builders of Nigeria. This was far below that $139 million that was originally costed for the land. The Osu stool was not consulted or engaged in this transaction involving ancestral lands under our custodianship. We must be informed, consulted, and given a seat to review proposals and contracts.

While supporting development, “we insist on engagement as rightful custodians.” Osu seeks active, equitable participation in shaping all projects on land tied to our heritage to uphold accountability to benefit our people.

Also, regarding the Marine Drive Project, Osu GaDangme lands and allodial owners were initially engaged when Togbe Afede XXI and Dr. Sonne approached with plans. However, the original proposal encroached heavily on the Osu coastline and our ancient quarter of Anerhor. Though revised after consultations, since the sod-cutting ceremony, Osu GaDangme Lands and Allodial owners have been excluded entirely, despite the project occupying large swaths of ancestral coastal lands.

I say with authority that I was substituted on the demise of the Osu Mantse,

The court document is with us, and in due time, we shall demand to know what is going on. Backroom deals and funds are reportedly changing hands involving private entities, without transparency or accountability to us as custodians.

As allodial owners of the soil of Osu GaDangme lands and allodial owners, we insist on being fully informed and involved in all the Marine Drive Projects decisions implicating Osu lands.

Next NDC govt won’t tolerate looters or nation wreckers – Fifi Kwetey

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning to its members against fostering a culture of corruption within the government.

They emphasized that being in power should focus on bringing sustainable development to the people, rather than enriching a select few.

Speaking at the 32nd Anniversary celebration and flag raising ceremony, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary, underscored the need for an NDC government to prioritize selflessness, patriotism, value for money, and accountability to the citizens.

He said: “Cadres may go, cadres may come, but the revolution of good governance, development, probity, accountability and integrity have come to stay and, therefore, the Party must be sacrosanct.

“We must ensure this Party becomes stronger and not have people in government whose thinking is how much money can we make. It must always be Ghana ahead of the Party and Party ahead of individuals,” the former MP said.

Mr. Kwetey, a former two-term Member of Parliament for Ketu South, highlighted the importance of commitment and sacrifice in achieving these goals, drawing from the example of past and present cadres.

He stressed the enduring principles of good governance, development, probity, accountability, and integrity within the party, asserting that the NDC must remain unwavering in its dedication to these ideals.

Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, urged party members to remain focused on winning the 2024 general election.

The NDC was formed in 1992, following a rigorous process of party formation led by Yusufu Ali, involving nationalists and revolutionists across all districts and regions.

Their efforts culminated in the acceptance of an interim certificate from the Electoral Commission on June 10, 1992, at the Art Centre, with the permanent certificate officially granted on July 27, 1992.

Court to decide on accepting leaked tape involving AG, Richard Jakpa on June 16

The High Court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe, has scheduled Thursday, June 13, to rule on an application submitted by the lawyers of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

The application aims to admit an audio recording of a conversation between Richard Jakpa and Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame into evidence.

Dr. Abdul Bassit Bamba, counsel for Dr. Ato Forson, presented the application on Tuesday, arguing that the recording is pertinent to their earlier motion for a mistrial, which the court had dismissed.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe requested that the audio tape be played in open court after confirming that all parties had received copies and that the tape had been officially submitted.

She explained that playing the recording was essential to determine its admissibility as evidence and to ensure that it was the same tape provided to both the prosecution and Dr. Ato Forson’s lawyers.

After listening to the tape, Director of Public Prosecution Yvonne Attakora Obuobisa objected to its admission into evidence.

She argued that the recording was irrelevant and violated the Attorney General’s privacy.

Madam Obuobisa stressed that the court had already considered the tape in its ruling that dismissed the applications filed by both Dr. Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa.

“We object to the tendering of this recording into evidence. Insufficient foundation has been laid for its inclusion in the ongoing trial. My Lady will note that in its ruling on June 6, this court admitted into evidence this same recording that counsel seeks to tender of the third accused (Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson),” she stated.

How can Bawumia fix the economy he helped destroy? – Former NPP General Secretary quizzes

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has dismissed claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, is not responsible for the current state of Ghana’s economy.

Ohene Ntow, a prominent member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, explained that Dr. Bawumia was selected as the vice-presidential candidate in 2007 primarily because President Akufo-Addo highlighted his economic expertise and former President John Agyekum Kufuor advocated for his inclusion, believing he could help improve the economy.

In an interview on Peace FM on Monday, June 6, 2024, Ohene Ntow expressed his concerns, stating that the vice president, once promoted as an economic expert, now avoids discussing the country’s economic issues and focuses instead on digitalization.

“President Akufo-Addo told the NPP and later Ghanaians that ‘I’m pleading with you, let me bring Dr. Bawumia because he is the one who can fix the economy and make it boom’… We (the NPP) refused, saying he was not a member of our party. But President Kufuor said that if we don’t choose Bawumia (as the vice-presidential candidate), we would regret it if the economy fails under our watch, and we accepted him.

“Today, Dr. Bawumia runs away when we talk about the economy. He has taken a small section, digitalization. Digitalization is important, but it is not the whole economy. If you listen to Dr. Bawumia’s own pronouncements during the campaigns for 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections and you compare them to the results, and someone tells me that he (Bawumia) is a new factor, I find it very difficult to accept,” he said in Twi.

He added, “Ghanaians would also say that President Akufo-Addo told us that he is not an economist and was delegating the economy’s running to Bawumia, and we would see wonders. He gave it to him not for one year, not two years, but for the first term of four years, and the second term of four years – 8 years – we saw nothing, and you want another four years?”

Ignore NDC’s propaganda, Bawumia is the best candidate – Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has pointed out that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) attempt to leverage Ghanaian dissatisfaction with the economy as a political tool is ineffective. He suggests two reasons for this lack of efficacy.

Firstly, Ahiagbah argues that an increasing number of people are realizing that external factors like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War significantly impacted the Ghanaian economy. Without these challenges, Ghana’s economy would have maintained its status as one of the world’s fastest-growing, as observed in 2019.

Secondly, Ahiagbah highlights the memory of the NDC’s economic mismanagement during 2013-2016 under H.E Mahama’s leadership. This historical context, he believes, undermines the NDC’s credibility in economic matters.

He emphasized the credibility and economic expertise of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, noting that despite adversities like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War, Ghana’s economy is on a path to recovery.

Mr Ahiagbah encourages support for Bawumia’s vision for a stronger economy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently touring the Ashanti Region as part of his campaign.

During his visit, he pledged to provide financial resources to traditional leaders to aid in national development. He proposed amending the Chieftaincy Act to empower chiefs to assist the government effectively.

Bawumia stressed the importance of financially supporting chiefs, stating that without adequate resources, they cannot fulfill their duties. He outlined plans to provide living allowances to paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers to strengthen the chieftaincy institution’s role in governance.

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception during his tour, Bawumia acknowledged meetings with various groups including clergy, imams, Zongo chiefs, and professional bodies.

He welcomed their input and assured them of his commitment to serving Ghana with integrity and transformational policies, seeking their blessings and prayers for his presidential aspirations.

“Bawumia stands out because he is believable, and despite the NDC’s propaganda, Bawumia’s credentials as an economic phenom remain solid. Despite setbacks due to COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine War, and the NDC’s desperate speculations, the economy is recovering.

“Bawumia’s comprehensive vision will lead to a more robust economy. It’s achievable! Support Bawumia for victory on December 7th,” he wrote on X.

  • Mahama, Bawumia would create more problems for Ghana if you vote for them – Hassan Ayariga

Mahama, Bawumia would create more problems for Ghana if you vote for them – Hassan Ayariga

Dr. Hassan Ayariga, founder and flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), has asserted that both former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would perform poorly if elected president in the 2024 general elections.

He remarked that while Mahama’s performance would be “worse,” Bawumia’s leadership would be “disastrous,” emphasizing that his own administration is what Ghanaians need under the current circumstances.

Dr. Ayariga criticized Dr. Bawumia’s policy approach, suggesting it could undermine the nation’s economic and social stability.

Additionally, he voiced concerns about John Mahama’s previous administration, arguing that his return to power would worsen existing issues.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Dr. Ayariga stated, “Both of them becoming President—Mahama will be worse, Bawumia will be disastrous, and Hassan Ayariga will be better”.

He emphasized that his policies would be significantly different and more beneficial for the country, telling journalists,“You will see the policies that I’m going to implement are totally different from what they are doing”.

The APC leader’s remarks underscore his party’s position as a pivotal voice advocating for a new direction in Ghanaian politics.

Whether Dr. Ayariga’s warnings will resonate with voters and influence the upcoming election remains uncertain. Until December 7, 2024, Dr. Ayariga and the APC will continue to campaign for change and a new era of governance focused on the well-being of all Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, has promised to be more accountable to Ghanaians than his main contender, former President John Mahama, if elected president in the December 7 polls.

He stated that his desire to serve for two terms, which would require returning to the voters after his first term, underscores his commitment to accountability.

Bawumia is being forced on Ghanaians to cover up Akufo-Addo’s tracks – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has restated his plea for Ghanaians not to be swayed into keeping the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power come December 7, 2024.

Mahama accused Akufo-Addo administration of orchestrating efforts to pave the way for his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to assume presidency, aiming to shield themselves from the corruption allegations they face.

In a live broadcast on social media dubbed ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024, Mahama urged voters to elect him, promising to hold current government officials accountable for their alleged wrongdoings.

He pledged to conduct thorough investigations into corruption allegations, not sparing officials from his own government if found guilty.

‘Mahama Conversations,’ urged Ghanaians to vote for him so that he would hold appointees of the current government accountable for all the wrongdoings they have committed.

“This change will also involve the most far-reaching and detailed investigation of the many allegations of corruption and scandals leveled against public officials and their families and friends.

“This change will help prevent this administration’s plan to force the compliant vice president on us to cover up for them and evade accountability,” he said.

Mahama stressed that his administration would implement stringent anti-corruption measures, ensuring transparency and accountability across the board, regardless of political affiliation.

“But, as I have stated, this intense spotlight of accountability is not only for appointees of this administration.

“It will also be used to punish individuals in my own administration who engage in similar misconduct. The same anti-corruption measures and tools I will use to investigate and punish NPP government appointees will also apply to my own appointees. In essence, in Ghanaian terms, ‘the stick that is used on Techie will also be used on Barh’,” he noted.

NPP has constructed more roads than NDC – Justin Kodua

The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, asserted that President Akufo-Addo‘s administration has tripled the nation’s road infrastructure in his seven and a half years in office.

Underlining the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) inability to match their achievements, Mr Kodua highlighted the NPP’s completion of approximately 12,000 kilometers of roads, a stark contrast to the NDC’s 4,000 kilometers during former President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s political show “Dwabrem,” Mr Kodua emphasized the NPP’s dedication to national development through prudent resource management.

In a live interview on Monday, June 10, 2024, Kodua boasts of his government’s unparalleled accomplishments in infrastructure, particularly in the road sector, marking it as unprecedented in Ghana’s history.

Encouraging Ghanaians to recognize the NPP’s achievements, Kodua urges voters to consider retaining the party in power during the 2024 elections.

“NPP under President Akufo-Addo’s regime has constructed about 12,000 kilometres of roads compared to 4,000 kilometres completed by the main opposition NDC, and this shows NPP’s commitment to developing the country.”

“One political party constructed 4,000 kilometres; the NPP now has about 12,000 kilometres. This is three times what our opponent did, and we have achieved this due to the prudent management of the meagre resources we inherited,” he said.

Your demand for 2023 financial statement, others is receiving attention – BoG to Ayariga

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has responded to the queries raised by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, regarding losses documented in the 2023 financial statement and the rising expenses linked to its headquarters.

These inquiries were made under section 18 of the Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989).

In acknowledgment of the MP’s concerns, the central bank has assured him that his requests are receiving due attention.

They have communicated to him that he can anticipate hearing from them shortly regarding the information he has sought.

In a letter dated Thursday, June 6, addressed to the legislator, the Bank of Ghana encouraged him to await their forthcoming response, assuring him that they would furnish the requested information in due course.

“The Bank acknowledges your receipt of your letter dated June 3, and notes the content thereof.

“We write to inform you that your request is receiving attention,” the BoG letter said.

The Bank of Ghana reported a loss of GH₵10.5 billion for the financial year ending in 2023.

The primary cause for this deficit was a notable surge in total interest expenses on open market operations by the Central Bank, which rose by GH₵6.7 billion during the review period.

In August 2023, the Bank of Ghana also defended its new $250 million headquarters.

In a statement released on Monday, June 3, Ayariga stated, “I write on the instructions of the Minority Leader of Parliament to request for the following information: Detailed particulars of the status of the write-offs made in respect of government’s indebtedness to BoG.

“Reasons for the combined losses of approximately GH₵70 billion as stated in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023. The status of the further expenses on the infamous head office building, which costs keep escalating.”

He further asked for “Reasons for recording a policy rate of 30% in 2023 as this is the highest record of policy rate in the last 20 years. Detailed particulars on the costs of the new construction at the premises of the old BoG clinic. Reasons for the total currency issuance expense of GH₵688.87 million as stated in BoG’s financial statement and annual report for 2023.”

  • Shatta Wale’s request for artist night at James Top Nelson Hall came late – Dean of Students

Shatta Wale’s request for artist night at James Top Nelson Hall came late – Dean of Students

Dean of Students at the University of Ghana (UG), Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, has addressed the circumstances surrounding Ghanaian musician, Shatta Wale’s absence from the performance, countering claims of sabotage from the artist’s camp.

During an interview with Radio Univers, Prof. Kyerematen clarified that the leadership of TF Hostel did not formally request approval for an Artiste Night but instead proposed a Karaoke night, which required minimal security measures.

Consequently, their last-minute appeal for an artiste night couldn’t be sanctioned due to inadequate time to implement necessary security measures.

In contrast, the leadership of Liman Hall submitted a clear request for an artiste night, enabling the implementation of required security measures for a seamless event.

Prof. Kyerematen refuted assertions that the University harbored any issues with Shatta Wale, emphasizing that the decision was solely based on the absence of formal approval and inadequate security arrangements for an artiste night.

“There are claims that approval had been given for an artiste night at James Top Nelson Hall and that is not true. Normally what happens is that when an event is going to be organized by any hall a request for approval is sent to my office with an outline of the programme they intend to organize.

“What they said they were going to do was a karaoke night and so we gave approval for a karaoke night and as far as I am concerned there is a big difference between a Karaoke night and an artiste night. When you are having an artiste night it comes with a lot of implications. Security and all that and so we need to ensure that there is enough security that is why you need approval from University authorities before you can organize an artiste night. Mind you there is a ban in place for student gatherings and processions.

So you cannot just get and say you are bringing an artiste such as Shatta Wale to the University of Ghana campus without the necessary arrangements being made on the ground and also without approval. Former Ghana High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Isaac Osei, has refuted claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has neglected development in the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Isaac Osei, a former Member of Parliament for Subin, asserted that the NPP has spearheaded more development projects in the Ashanti Region than any other political party.

Addressing journalists in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Isaac Osei emphasized that the NPP has made significant strides in the region and continues to implement crucial projects.

“The government of President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia has done a lot in the Ashanti region and all over the place. Whether you are talking about infrastructure or whether you are talking about the number of people who have passed through school as a result of the new policy on education by the government, it is obvious that this government has done great things here.

“The recent opening of the airport, for example, is a sure example of what the government wants to do here. The work that is going on at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“This government, I think, has been fantastic for the people of Ashanti. We know that it is not just Ashanti. All over the country, the NPP is going to work and work very hard to ensure that we deliver a victory for the NPP and that we have Dr Bawumia as our next president.”

Akufo-Addo has passed the begging bowl to South Korea – Economist reacts to $2bn agreement

Renowned US economist, Professor Steve Hanke, has criticized president Akufo-Addo’s continuous reliance on borrowing from international communities rather than implementing sustainable economic reforms to salvage the economy.

Taking to the X platform, he argued that such agreements only deepen Ghana’s debt burden and fail to address fundamental economic challenges.

#SaveGhanaNow: Ghana recently secured a $2bn framework agreement with South Korea. Pres. Akufo-Addo passes Ghana’s BEGGING BOWL – ONCE AGAIN,” he wrote.

His comment comes after Ghana recently secured a significant boost for its developmental initiatives through the signing of a $2 billion framework arrangement with South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

The agreement, formalized on the sidelines of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, is set to boost the implementation of Ghana’s key priority programs spanning various sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, energy, roads and transport, as well as ICT over the next five years.

This milestone signing ceremony marks a reaffirmation of the enduring bilateral economic development partnership between the two nations.

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, represented the government, while Mr. Cho Tae-yeol, the Foreign Minister for Korea, signed on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Korea.

The event was attended by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, alongside other dignitaries from both countries.

Meanwhile, on Friday, February 3, 2023, President Akufo-Addo urged Germany to play a facilitating role in encouraging China, an ad hoc member of the Paris Club, to support Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.

During a meeting with the visiting German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, at the Jubilee House in Accra, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of the Paris Club swiftly establishing a creditors committee, with the participation of other official creditors, to assist Ghana in its efforts to restore economic growth.

Mr Lindner, leading a delegation from Germany, engaged in bilateral discussions with President Akufo-Addo aimed at enhancing relations and economic cooperation between the two countries.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his government’s primary focus on concluding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), particularly at the Board Level, and finalizing a deal with the Bretton Woods institution by mid-March of the same year.

Vote for me to revive banks that were collapsed unfairly – Mahama to Ghanaians

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to restoring collapsed banks and financial institutions after conducting a thorough and impartial assessment.

Expressing concern about Ghana’s rising unemployment, he called on Ghanaians to overwhelmingly support him in the 2024 elections to rejuvenate the struggling economy.

During an interaction with Ghanaians on Sunday, June 9, Mahama acknowledged the growing discontent among the youth and assured them of his dedication to building a nation of shared growth and prosperity.

“My dear youth, while I agree with your justifiable anger and disappointments, I urge you to keep hope alive. Have faith in God and the power of your thumb. Ghanaians are in search of hope, hope they can believe in! Hope with the assurance that Ghana will be reset onto the path of progress and prosperity.

“Hope, knowing they can live in safe neighbourhoods and earn a living if they study hard, work hard, and live as law-abiding citizens. This is what Ghanaians are yearning for, and this is precisely what the NDC and I are presenting to you in this election of 2024.

“Exercise your franchise by voting for me, John Mahama, on 7th December 07 and for the NDC Parliamentary Candidate in your constituency. As your selfless, truthful, experienced, and visionary leader, I need your vote to reset Ghana. I assure you I will work with you to build a country of shared growth and prosperity.”

He stressed, “By resetting Ghana, I will repair the dangerous damage to our country’s economy and people.
Businessmen and women who government apparatchiks have given raw deals will have their say and can be assured of restoration. After a thorough and unbiased assessment, collapsed banks and financial institutions shall be restored. We will provide decent and well-paying jobs through my 24-hour economy initiative.

“Let me be clear: I am utterly appalled and disappointed by the unprecedented unemployment rate we are seeing today.”

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta oversaw the banking sector clean-up from mid-2017 to January 2020, resulting in the closure of several banks, microfinance institutions, savings and loans, and finance houses.

Sewua and Afari hospitals in Ashanti Region to be unveiled by August – Bawumia

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has voiced concerns about the delayed completion of major health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

He attributed the current congestion and strain on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to these delays.

Highlighting the 500-bed Afari Military Hospital and the 250-bed Sewua Hospital as pivotal projects, the GMA emphasized that their completion would ease the burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a crucial referral center serving 12 regions.

Critiquing the government’s prioritization of Agenda 111 hospitals over the refurbishment of the referral hospital, the GMA noted fundraising efforts by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the latter.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, suggested reallocating resources from Agenda 111 projects to refurbish the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, addressing inefficiencies.

During discussions with Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Baidoo proposed redirecting resources from 10 Agenda 111 hospitals to retool the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

In response, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the congestion issue and assured that the Afari and Sewua hospitals would soon be operational, with Sewua expected to be commissioned by July 2024 and Afari by August 2024.

“With the overcrowding that we are seeing at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, I agree with the suggestion to dedicate resources to retooling the hospital.

“And with particular reference to the two hospitals that are almost done, Sewua which is a regional hospital, and Afari which is a military hospital, we expect Sewua to be commissioned hopefully by July [2024] and commission Afari in August [2024] as well.”

Include remote areas in voter registration mop-up exercise – Mahama to EC

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise beyond district offices to include hard-to-reach areas.

The EC plans to conduct this mop-up exercise from August 1-3, 2024.

Mahama believes that expanding the registration locations will allow eligible Ghanaians, who have turned 18 or older, to register during the mop-up exercise, thus preventing voter suppression.

He expressed these views during an interaction with Ghanaians dubbed ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

“If this young lady or gentleman manages to secure two guarantors, pays for the transportation of the guarantors to accompany them to a registration centre and due to network failure and postponements, this young person is unable to register via the guarantor system, what is the likelihood that he or she can return another day to register with two guarantors?

“That leads to voter suppression. I will continue to urge the EC to prevent voter suppression by extending the mop-up exercise beyond its district offices to include all hard-to-reach areas.

“This will enable Ghanaians who have turned 18 or more to register from the 1st to the 3rd of August,” he said.

He also reassured his supporters that any obstacles to voting would not hinder his ultimate victory in the polls, which would be a victory for all Ghanaians.

“However, let me assure you that no matter the challenges or artificial mountains and obstacles they erect in your paths to prevent you from exercising your franchise, my victory in the polls shall be your victory. It shall be a victory for all the suffering Ghanaians,” he stated.

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has expressed his dedication to ensuring that all regional offices of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice are accommodated in three-storey building structures at the minimum.

Dame emphasized the need to move away from the practice of state Attorneys in various regions operating from makeshift structures or within the office complexes of other state institutions.

Speaking at the inauguration of a ten-storey building, which serves as the new office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, Godfred Dame outlined his vision to establish a modern legal system.

“Towards realising the dream of a modern public legal service, I dare say that the era where regional offices of the attorney general and the minister for justices and other agencies of the ministry perch in the corner of buildings belonging to other government institutions or are sometimes thrown out of premises in which their licensees should be over soon.

“I am of the respectful view that every regional office of the ministry of justice ought to own at least a three-storey edifice and I have commenced discussions in this regard with the World Bank towards the possibility of funding for this project,” he stated.

Dame further articulated that he believes every regional office of the Ministry of Justice should possess a minimum of a three-storey building. He mentioned ongoing discussions with the World Bank regarding potential funding for such projects.

The new Law House, featuring ten storeys above ground and a two-tier basement for parking, serves as a model for efficient utilization of public lands, according to Dame.

“It will house the three divisions of the offices of the Attorney General ie., the civil division, the prosecution division and the city drafting division.

“In addition to the good number of offices for state attorneys, it boasts of a vast conference room which the GBA can use occasionally,” he added.

Its inauguration symbolizes the culmination of extensive planning and unwavering commitment to enhancing the legal landscape of the nation.

During his address at the commissioning ceremony of the Law House in Accra on Monday, President Akufo-Addo commended the tireless efforts of Godfred Dame, remarking, “I must at the outset pay glowing tribute to the work undertaken by the AG, Godfred Yeboah Dame in bringing us to this day.

“When he assumed office as AG in 2021 after four years as Deputy AG, the completion status of the law house project as we have been told was at 36%. His commitment together with my support was instrumental in reviving and bringing the project to completion.”

“His efforts ensured that this initiative which [would have] easily ended up as another abandoned government project was implemented to become the impressive structure that we are celebrating…He has done a yeoman’s job and I say a hearty ‘ayekoo’ to him.”

  • Ghanaian woman wins lawsuit against UK’s Home Office

Ghanaian woman wins lawsuit against UK’s Home Office

Ghanaian woman Cecilia Adjei has emerged victorious in a legal battle against the UK Home Office regarding her immigration status in the country.

Cecilia Adjei, a mother of two boys aged 17 and 11, joined forces with the charity organization Ramfel to sue the Home Office over its failure to furnish documents to thousands of migrants, herself included, proving their lawful residence in the UK.

As reported by theguardian.com, the plaintiff contended that despite her status as a healthcare worker who migrated from Ghana to the UK in 2000, she and numerous other migrants applied for visa extensions but were not provided with official documentation affirming their legal presence in the UK while their applications were under review.

The crucial document in question, known as ‘3C leave,’ serves as an automatic form of immigration status during the processing period of visa applications.

This predicament placed Adjei and fellow immigrants in jeopardy of job loss and hindered their access to higher education, healthcare, and housing rental rights due to the inability to substantiate their lawful presence.

The UK High Court judge presiding over the case, Justice Cavanagh, ruled that the Home Office’s failure to furnish digital proof of status to migrants on 3C leave constituted unlawful conduct.

“The evidence clearly establishes that a substantial number of those on section 3C leave suffer real hardship through being unable to provide immediate documentary proof of their immigration status and attendant rights.”

“The underlying purpose of the legislative framework is that there should be a hostile and unwelcoming environment for those who are unlawfully present and so who are undocumented. The corollary of this is that those who are lawfully here should not face the hostile environment. That can only happen if they are documented,” he said.

He further emphasized the necessity for the Home Secretary to implement a “simple measure” to alleviate hardship for a substantial segment of the population.

Cecilia Adjei expressed gratitude to the court for its verdict, highlighting the ordeal’s adverse impact on her employment status and her ability to provide for her two children.

“What I went through while waiting for my visa to be extended by the Home Office was really stressful,” she said. “I was unable to prove that I had the right to work so was suspended from my employment as a healthcare support worker twice, without any notice.

“I have two children and have to budget very carefully, so we suffered real hardship when my wages suddenly stopped. I had to borrow money and visit a food bank just to get by. It was humiliating and scary as I didn’t have any way to prove to my employer that I still had the correct immigration status and the right to work.”

Be mindful of your utterances against Bawumia – Ahiagbah tells Alan’s advisor

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has cautioned Nana Ohene Ntow, an advisor to Independent Presidential Candidate Alan Kyerematen, against his remarks concerning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the government.

Mr. Ahiagbah emphasized the NPP’s respect for Ohene Ntow’s candidate, Mr. Kyerematen, stating they would refrain from making harsh comments against him.

This came after Ohene Ntow suggested on Peace FM’s Kokroko show that major institutions under the current government are more corrupt than previous administrations, a statement Mr. Ahiagbah deemed subjective.

Ahiagbah stressed that corruption allegations are inconclusive, as the law ultimately determines guilt. He also acknowledged Ohene Ntow’s remark that digitalization doesn’t encompass the entire economy but pointed out its pivotal role in driving economic growth and prosperity today.

“In a recent appearance on Peace FM’s Kokroko show, the former general secretary and ex-member of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Ohene Ntow, made some comments about Dr. Bawumia that need to be corrected: 1. Dr. Bawumia’s competence and ability to effectively manage Ghana’s economy as president remain unquestioned.

“The current economic challenges, which may have influenced Nana Ohene Ntow’s remarks, are primarily due to external factors such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War and do not accurately reflect Bawumia’s capabilities. 2. It would be beneficial for Nana Ohene-Ntow to revisit economic data from 2017, 2018, and 2019, when the economy was growing at an average of 7% before the impact of COVID-19.

“This would provide a more accurate assessment of the current government’s economic management record. 3. Nana Ohene Ntow’s assertion that major institutions under this government are more corrupt than previous administrations is subjective. Allegations of corruption are not conclusive, as the law has the final say in such matters.

“Nana Ohene Ntow’s suggestion that digitalization is not the entire economy can be pardoned. However, it is widely recognized that digitalization is a significant driver of economic growth and prosperity today. 5. Nana Ohene-Ntow supports Alan Kyerematen, whom we respect and would not want to speak roughly about his candidacy or campaign.”

    Ghana’s logistics drops to 62.4% from 63.3%

Organizations appear to have shifted from the usual trend of restocking after the December holidays, with logistics and procurement activities slowing down in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Ghana Managers Index.

During this period, the overall logistics index value dropped to 62.4% from the previous quarter’s 63.3%.

The index, which measures aggregate inventories, warehouse activities, the carriage of goods, and other key metrics in the supply and logistics value chain, indicates that low movements and high costs in certain areas contributed to this 0.9 percentage point decline in the logistics sector.

The report highlights that aggregate logistics costs remain high, recording a value of 245.4 for the first quarter of 2024, well above the threshold of 150. Although warehouse prices slightly decreased from 77.2 to 76.7, warehousing utilization saw a 6.0 percentage point drop.

Additionally, inventory costs increased from the previous quarter’s 79.9 to 81.1.

For the third consecutive quarter, the use of electronic payment systems rose significantly, with the first quarter of 2024 recording a value of 71.2.

With Fintech gaining broader acceptance in the Ghanaian economy, the report projects steady growth for the logistics sector.

Your intimidation against Naa Koryoo has won us Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat – Mahama to NPP

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has asserted that the police have inadvertently bolstered the candidacy of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the Awutu Senya East parliamentary race.

Mahama suggested that if the intention behind her arrest and detention was to intimidate and dissuade her, it has had the opposite effect.

Mahama condemned what he perceives as inequality and selective justice under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. He highlighted the case of Hawa Koomson, the current Awutu Senya East MP, who faced no repercussions after firing a weapon at a voter registration center. In contrast, Naa Koryoo was detained merely for a clerical error on her firearm license.

“The inequality and selective justice of this government are gullying, otherwise, how could Hawa Koomson, who fired a weapon at a registration centre and boasted about it, walk away free and a parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East is detained partly because the very police that issued her with a firearm’s license misspelt her name?” the former president said in a live broadcast on Sunday, June 9.

He added, “If the government was seeking to break the spirit of Naa Koryoo with that politically organised arrest, they have rather handed over the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the young woman, who by all standards towers over and above the incumbent.”

During his address at the commissioning of the Law House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo asserted that no political party or presidential candidate will be exempt from legal consequences if they violate the law.

He reassured the Ghanaian people that law enforcement agencies, including the Attorney General’s office, will exert their full authority to ensure that law and order are preserved, especially during this pivotal election year.

“I want to use the opportunity on this platform to reassure the Ghanaian people that the law enforcement agencies of the state, including the office of the attorney general, will do all with their power to ensure that law and order prevail in the country at all times, especially during this critical election year.

“We will not allow the peace, security and stability of the nation which has made Ghana a beacon of democracy on the African continent to be compromised on the alter of the ambition of any political party or presidential candidate, it will not happen. Ghana Card applicants in Ashanti Region left stranded due to ongoing NIA strike

The ongoing strike staged by National Identification Authority (NIA) staff has caused significant inconvenience to numerous applicants in the Ashanti Region, depriving them of vital services.

Commencing on Monday, June 10, 2024, the strike was formally declared by the Public Services Workers Union on Sunday.

The reasons cited include dissatisfaction with working conditions and the government’s prolonged delay in addressing negotiation issues and specific allowances for the institution.

Despite a prior postponement of a strike notice in March 2024, facilitated by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, the lack of progress in negotiations has compelled the union to take industrial action.

Consequently, all NIA facilities, spanning district, regional, and premium centers, have suspended operations, leaving applicants stranded and frustrated.

Many individuals, having traveled from distant locations, urgently require the Ghana card but are unable to obtain it due to the strike.

In media interviews, affected applicants have voiced their distress, emphasizing the critical importance of the Ghana card for various purposes and expressing concern over the severe disruption caused by the strike.

Applicants are now urging swift action from the government and relevant authorities to address the NIA’s grievances. They fear that prolonged strike action will exacerbate the situation and have detrimental effects if not resolved promptly.

Education Minister to be summoned to parliament over GHS84m free Wi-Fi deal – Apaak

+Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, has announced plans to summon Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to Parliament regarding the provision of free Wi-Fi to Senior High Schools.

Minority MPs are demanding that the Minister address lingering questions about the free Wi-Fi contract.

During an appearance on the Super Morning Show on Monday, June 10, Dr. Apaak stated that if the Minister fails to appear before the Committee, he will be compelled to bring the matter before the plenary.

Dr. Apaak disclosed that he has been pursuing answers from the Minister about this deal for three years without success.

He stressed the urgency of resolving the matter and emphasized the importance of transparency in the Minister’s dealings.

The Builsa South MP reiterated the Minority’s commitment to holding all individuals involved in the free Wi-Fi deal accountable.

He emphasized that the Minister’s prolonged avoidance of the issue has only heightened the need for a thorough investigation.

“When we resume tomorrow [Tuesday], I will speak to my leadership and I believe the committee of education now has a justifiable basis to wheel in the minister to respond to these questions before the committee and if he refuses to do so, then, we will have no choice than to file a motion to the speaker asking for him to be brought to answer the questions that I posed that he should have answered two-three years ago,” he said.

This development comes after an investigation by The Fourth Estate revealed that a five-year contract was awarded to Busy Internet without the necessary parliamentary approval, as mandated by Ghana’s Public Financial Management Act in 2018.

The investigation highlighted that Busy Internet was chosen over industry leaders like MTN, which had recently been licensed to provide 4G internet services, and Surfline Ghana Limited, another 4G service provider.

When questioned by The Fourth Estate, Free Senior High School Coordinator William Darkwa explained that the major players were not interested in the project due to concerns about delayed government payments.

Despite winning the contract, Busy Internet subcontracted MTN Ghana and AirtelTigo to deliver the services it had promised to provide to secondary schools and education offices nationwide.

Initially, the Wi-Fi system functioned well, providing internet access to some schools. However, connectivity issues soon arose, and many schools lost access.

A visit by The Fourth Estate to 50 schools in 2023 revealed that 48 of them had been without internet connection for several months. Numerous complaints to Busy Internet’s customer service went unresolved, leading to frustration and anger among the schools.

The investigation raised further questions about how an unqualified company was selected as the sole-source candidate for such a significant government contract.

The original contract between Busy Internet and the Ministry of Education set the project cost at GHS84.4 million, with the Education Ministry also committed to a monthly recurrent cost of GHS6.4 million for maintaining internet connectivity in schools and educational offices.

This project aimed to fulfil a 2016 manifesto promise by the governing New Patriotic Party to provide free Wi-Fi coverage for senior secondary and tertiary institutions, enhancing learning, administration, and research capabilities.

As of February 2024, the contract with Busy Internet had connected over 1,000 institutions to the internet, although the effectiveness and sustainability of these connections remain in question.

  • C/R: Woman allegedly stabbed to death by boyfriend over misunderstanding

In Kasoa Adam Nana, within the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, a distressing incident unfolded involving a 27-year-old man named Justice and his girlfriend.

Tragically, the deceased stabbed Justice in the back, prompting him to also grab the knife and retaliate. In the heat of the moment, he stabbed her multiple times in the chest, resulting in her untimely demise.
