Ghana has become a hideout for extremists – Ambassador to Burkina Faso

Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambila Adagbila, has stated that terrorists from Burkina Faso and other Sahel regions enter Ghana, access Ghanaian hospitals, and return to their originating locations.

During a discussion in the Upper East Region, he highlighted the alarming threats posed by terrorism spilling over from neighboring Burkina Faso and the broader Sahel region, especially impacting West African coastal nations.

“The serious threat is between Burkina and Niger and Mali, and then to the east, and then to the west, that is where the terrorists movement occurs most. Believe it or not, they are able to come into Ghana and go back. Yes, they move in and go back, and they roam, they come to our hospitals and go back. But governments are working at that. It’s not something we need top dilate so much about.

“They also know… when they are attacked north, north-east, west, they think that they have a safe haven coming down south of Burkina and they come as far as to our frontiers, and we need to be careful.”

While acknowledging ongoing governmental efforts to address this menace, he stressed the need for vigilance.

Additionally, Ambassador Adagbila noted that seven Ghanaians who disappeared after entering Burkina Faso last year remain unaccounted for.

He advised travelers to strictly adhere to approved routes and official document processing procedures to mitigate risks, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the two nations to locate the missing individuals.

Highlighting similar concerns, National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah questioned the inability of security agencies in affected countries to neutralize the terrorist threat.

His remarks were made during an event organized by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), in partnership with Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), focused on bolstering capacities to implement the Accra Initiative in West Africa and the Sahel.

Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hisanobu Mochizuki, pledged substantial financial support totaling approximately USD 500 million over the next three years.

This contribution aims to foster peace, stability, and sustainable growth in the Sahel region and neighboring Gulf of Guinea coastal nations.

You are likely to receive your allowances this week – Bawumia tells Nursing trainees

The Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that pending nursing trainee allowances for 2024 will soon be disbursed to nursing and teacher trainees nationwide.

These allowances, initially revoked by the previous Mahama administration but reinstated by the Akufo-Addo government, have faced delays for several months.

Addressing a sizable gathering of youth, including nursing and teacher trainees, in Nalerigu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia shared the news to resounding applause.

“On the nursing training allowance, we have been able to agree on what to do come this Thursday,”Dr. Bawumia said, as the crowd cheered.

“The Minister of Finance has sent me a message which says that on Thursday, the Controller and Accountant General is going to transfer 177 million Ghana Cedis to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health will transfer it to the Nursing trainees,”he said.

“So I believe that, in shaa Allah, by next week, all of you should be receiving the nursing trainee allowances, and they will be in your accounts.’

Dr. Bawumia’s revelation electrified the audience, particularly the nursing trainees, who openly expressed their jubilation, echoing his name in appreciation.

Following this announcement, Dr. Bawumia underscored the NPP’s commitment to supporting nursing and teacher trainees, contrasting it with the cancellation of these allowances by the NDC under Mahama’s leadership.

“The NPP has demonstrated clearly that it is the party which cares for the youth and have you at heart, through many of our policies, which support you,” he said.

“My opponent in December and his party, the NDC, cancelled the nursing and teacher trainee allowances. But we came in and restored it. We are committed to it and I am very committed to it that is why I have been following up on it,” he added.

  • Adam Bonaa’s allegations against EOCO holds no water – Security Analyst

Adam Bonaa’s allegations against EOCO holds no water – Security Analyst

The Global Intelligence and Security Analysis Center (GISAC) has rebuked security analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa for labeling the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) as the epicenter of corruption. GISAC criticized Bonaa’s remarks as unfounded and lacking moral integrity.

In a statement signed by Executive Director Samuel Nana Appiah Owusu, GISAC accused Mr Bonaa of acting in bad faith, alleging personal vendettas against EOCO’s leadership, particularly COP Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah.

The statement claims that Bonaa’s criticism stemmed from personal grievances after his unsuccessful attempts to secure contracts and favors from EOCO.

GISAC emphasized that Bonaa’s accusations lacked substantiation and were driven by animosity towards EOCO’s head.

The statement highlighted Bonaa’s failure to provide evidence to support his claims and questioned the validity of his allegations.

The statement concluded by urging the public to dismiss Bonaa’s allegations as baseless and motivated by personal interests rather than genuine concerns about corruption at EOCO.

ADAM BONAA HAS NO MORAL RIGHT TO CALL EOCO A CORRUPT INSTITUTION. HE IS ENGAGED IN PEJORATIVE STIGMATIZATION.

I have read and listened to various articles and interviews both on traditional and social media regarding a claim by Mr. Adam Bonaa ( Security Analyst) to the effect that the headquarters of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) has become the corruption headquarters.

I must state here that the claim by Mr. Adam Bonaa is borne out of bad faith and has no merit whatsoever.

Mr. Adam Bonaa made such frivolous claims without substantiating same with any form of evidence. His claim suggests that he has personal banter with the Head of the Institution after his failed attempt to secure contracts and other favors.

I am reliably informed and can say on authority that the allegations against EOCO by Mr Bonaa is borne out of pure hatred against Mrs. Yaa Tiwaa Addo Dankwa, the head of EOCO.
Mr Adam Bonaa upon several attempts to lobby for contracts and favors from the head of EOCO, was told that there was no contract and also no such thing as favors were available for him ( Adam Bonaa).

Is it the case that Mr. Adam Bonaa is peeved and has resorted in denigrating the enviable reputation of the head of the institution and her personality ?
To what extent can he provide evidence to buttress his claim? What other series of corruption cases has he witnessed taking place at the EOCO headquarters? Can one accuse anybody simply because he or she refused to aced to a demand or give in to lobbyists?

Evidence are abundant to prove that Mr. Adam Bonaa’s claim is borne out of bad faith and must be treated with the contempt it deserves. He is hiding behind the call for Parliamentary inquiry into the Cecelia Dapaa’s case to engage in settling personal scores with the head of EOCO for the simple fact that his request for contracts and other favors from the head of the institution was declined.
From the evidence available, I can state without any form of equivocation that Mr. Adam Bonaa has no moral right to allege that EOCO has become the headquarters of corruption.
Mr. Adam Bonaa is rather engaging in pejorative stigmatization.

  • Female judges bring valuable strengths to Judiciary – Akufo-Addo

Female judges bring valuable strengths to Judiciary – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo underscored the vital role played by female judges in combating detrimental cultural practices, particularly those hindering the development of women and girls.

He emphasized that the diverse experiences of female judges uniquely position them to contribute distinct perspectives and strengths to the pursuit of justice and equity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 18th International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) Conference in Accra, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the theme “Combating Negative Cultural Practices in Contemporary Times – The Role of Women Judges.”

He emphasized that having women represented at all levels of the judicial system not only enhances respect for the judiciary but also instills confidence in the justice delivery system.

“Women judges across Africa and the globe bring unique viewpoints and strengths to the judiciary.

Their experiences, often mirroring the societal challenges we seek to overcome, equip them uniquely to advocate for justice and fairness.”

The President stressed that addressing negative cultural practices requires a collaborative effort beyond the courtroom, involving education, awareness, and governance.

He urged female judges to uphold fairness, equality, and justice in their decisions, emphasizing the profound impact their rulings can have on societal transformation.

President Akufo-Addo envisioned a future where the law serves not only to punish but also to educate and reform, ensuring a society where individuals are judged based on their potential rather than conformity to outdated customs.

He concluded by highlighting the essential role of the IAWJ in empowering women judges worldwide to promote gender equality, end discriminatory laws, and uphold human rights.

“As judges and upholders of the law, you have the power to redefine norms and set precedents that protect the vulnerable and marginalised,” he said.

“In dealing with issues like gender-based violence, child marriage, widowhood rites and female genital mutilation – practices steeped in deep-rooted cultural norms – your voices and rulings can resonate deeply, driving societal transformation.”

“It is imperative to acknowledge that the fight against these practices is not confined to the courtrooms. Education, awareness, and collaborative governance are critical.

“We must engage traditional leaders, educators, and communities to recalibrate mindsets and attitudes. It is in our schools, homes, and community gatherings where the foundational beliefs of our next generation are formed,” he said.

  • Phase II of Agavedzi-Blekusu sea defense project to begin soon

Phase II of Agavedzi-Blekusu sea defense project to begin soon

The initiation of Phase II of the Agavedzi-Blekusu Sea Defense Project in Ketu South, aimed at shielding coastal communities from recurring tidal wave assaults, has commenced.

This revelation emerged during a recent visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing, following a directive from the Speaker of Parliament.

The Speaker’s directive stemmed from concerns raised by all three Members of Parliament representing coastal constituencies in the Region—Ketu South, Keta, and Anlo—regarding the urgency to safeguard the coastline from potential extinction.

Committee Chairman, Isaac Asiamah, disclosed that the government had secured $150 million for the project in the constituency and other coastal communities.

He assured that plans were underway, with Phase II set to commence shortly.

Highlighting the significance of the proposed 8km project and its ancillary facilities—such as a cold store, fishing market, and clinic—estimated at $83 million, Asiamah stressed that the project’s capital intensity was justified by its role in preserving lives, property, and Ghana’s cultural heritage.

Expressing concern over the lack of progress since the Committee’s previous visit two years ago, Asiamah urged urgent action to prevent the loss of a vital resource with tourism and transportation potential.

He stressed: “We will not allow this critical part of Ghana to go to waste.”

Ranking Member of the Committee, Mr. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, underscored the need for the government to prioritize protecting the country’s coastal communities to prevent further devastation.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, a Committee Member, questioned the high estimated cost for continuing the defense project at Agavedzi-Blekusu, advocating for prudent resource utilization to extend protection to a larger stretch of the coastline.

In response, Kenneth Kpedor, President of Anlo Youth Council, welcomed news of the secured funds for the project, emphasizing its significance in safeguarding homes, livelihoods, and cultural heritage from erosion and flooding threats.

“The securing of funds represents a significant step forward in our collective efforts to safeguard our homes, livelihoods, and cultural heritage from the threats posed by erosion and flooding.”

He urged the government to provide detailed information on funding allocation and project timelines to enhance public trust, confidence, and effective monitoring.

  • The headquarters for corruption in Ghana is EOCO – Adam Bonaa

The headquarters for corruption in Ghana is EOCO – Adam Bonaa

Security and safety analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa has leveled accusations of dishonesty and corruption against the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking on the standoff between EOCO and the Office of the Special Prosecutor regarding investigations into former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Dapaah, Dr. Bonaa openly questioned the integrity of EOCO’s operations.

“Hello, I am Adam Bonaa, a citizen of this country and not a spectator, as the president enjoined us to be some time ago. I am using this media to invite Parliament and, by extension, the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, to institute a probe into the Cecilia Dapaah cash saga.

“I have a feeling EOCO is not telling us the truth, and I can say with certainty that EOCO has now become the headquarters of corruption. There is a need to investigate what happened between these two institutions under the executive.

“These two institutions, EOCO and the Special Prosecutor, are both under the Attorney General’s office, and so to have EOCO handed over the file to investigate a money laundering issue, which comes under them, and to have EOCO come back and later tell us that they couldn’t do anything about it, if you ask me, it is mind-boggling. As a citizen and not a spectator, I would ask the Right Honourable Speaker and, by extension, Parliament, to institute a probe. That is the only way we would know,” he stated.

Dr. Bonaa, hinting at potential undisclosed activities within EOCO, made a direct plea to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, not only to launch an investigation but also to broaden its scope, potentially encouraging more Ghanaians to come forward with information.

In a direct accusation, Dr. Bonaa singled out the Executive Director of EOCO, COP Maame Tiwaa, for lacking transparency with the Ghanaian populace, demanding full disclosure of the case involving the money discovered at Madam Dapaah’s residence and its link to the Special Prosecutor.

“There are a lot of things that are going on in EOCO that some of us find very unfortunate, and probably if these things begin to unfold, maybe if the speaker is minded to give an extended terms of reference, which is not to say that I know what is going to happen, but if the speaker would do this, I believe that we are going to have Ghanaians come out and tell the committee, if there is to be a bipartisan probe, what they know,” he added.

Previously, the Office of the Special Prosecutor had probed Cecilia Dapaah for corruption and related offenses after her domestic staff were accused of stealing significant sums of money and valuables from her residence.

Despite an extensive investigation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor discontinued the case and transferred the docket to EOCO, which, following advice from the Attorney General’s office, opted to return the file to the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

  • We won’t be observing violence at registration centres if Ghana Card was used as a sole document – EC

We won’t be observing violence at registration centres if Ghana Card was used as a sole document – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has emphasized that the recent violence witnessed during the limited voter registration process validates its proposition to utilize the Ghana Card as the exclusive document for registration.

The commission has noted instances of violence at certain registration centers, primarily stemming from disputes over the age and citizenship status of registrants.

However, it contends that such conflicts could have been mitigated had the Ghana Card been adopted as the sole registration credential.

During a press conference held on May 13, 2024, to provide an update on the limited voter registration, Deputy Electoral Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare urged party agents to utilize the challenge process instead of physically obstructing registrants.

“We have also noticed that some of the disturbances occurring at some of our registration centres are due to the fact that some people are doubting the ages of some of the applicants. This is the reason why the commission has been advocating for the usage of the Ghana Card, which has the date of birth and the nationality of the bearers of the card and the abolishment of the guarantor system.

“We are hopeful that in the next registration exercise, applicants will use the Ghana card as the means of identification,” he stated.

  • BoG spent GHS6bn on its employees in 6 years – Report

BoG spent GHS6bn on its employees in 6 years – Report

A recent report from JoyNews has revealed that the Bank of Ghana (BoG), allocated a substantial 6 billion Ghanaian Cedis toward employee costs spanning from 2017 to 2022.

The report dived into the workforce statistics of the Bank of Ghana, noting that the total staff count, including directors, stands at 2,215 individuals.

Analysis of the data unveiled a steady increase in BoG’s expenditure on staff salaries and benefits over the years. In 2017, the bank allocated 596.2 million Ghanaian Cedis for employee costs, witnessing a notable surge from the previous year.

By 2018, this figure climbed to 697.3 million Ghanaian Cedis and further escalated to 809.8 million Ghanaian Cedis in 2019.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented financial challenges, evident in the bank’s expenditure.

During this period, BoG’s spending on personnel costs exceeded the billion-mark, totaling more than 1 billion Ghanaian Cedis.

“The research team, we have been looking at the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) financial statement, their audited statement right from 2017 to 2022 and we have found out that some interesting revelation in there and just like you captured in your intro. If you look as of 2022  Bank of Ghana’s staff number in terms of their staff plus their directors we are talking about 2, 215 workers.

“Now what has become the bone of contention has been the amount the bank spent on their personnel. So we have been looking at how much BoG spent on their staff plus their directors. We looked at the data from 2017 BoG spent GH592.200,000.00 Ghana cedis on their personnel cost. In 2016 this number rose to 697.300,000.00 Ghana Cedis then crossed to 809.800,000.00. Then we have our first billion during the Covid season where BoG spent more than 1 billion Ghana Cedis on personnel costs,” a member of Joy News’ research team disclosed.

The significant allocation of funds toward employee expenses has sparked discussions regarding fiscal prudence and resource management within the Bank of Ghana.

Critics have raised concerns over the sustainability of such expenditure patterns, especially considering evolving economic dynamics and the imperative for efficient resource allocation.

Meanwhile, Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has alleged that the Bank of Ghana allocated a substantial amount of GH₵1.62 billion (£147.27 million at the 2022 average cedi-pound exchange rate) for the salaries of its 2,203 employees.

Drawing comparisons between the Bank of Ghana and the Bank of England (BOE), Togbe Afede XIV highlighted a significant disparity. While the BoG pays an average of £66,851 per employee, the BOE pays substantially higher at £95,829 per employee.

Furthermore, Togbe Afede XIV pointed out a distinct difference in the financial circumstances of the staff. Unlike the staff of the Bank of England, who do not owe loans to their employer, BoG staff carry an average debt of GH₵566,046 (£51,459) per employee as of the end of 2022.

Expressing concern over the considerable sum of staff loans, totaling GH₵1.247 billion, with an average indebtedness of GH₵566,046 per employee, Togbe Afede XIV argued that such a financial burden should not be overlooked, especially amidst the current economic challenges faced by the country.

In light of these revelations, Togbe Afede XIV urged a reassessment of the remuneration structure within the Bank of Ghana, emphasizing the necessity for equitable compensation practices aligned with prevailing economic realities and aimed at promoting financial stability for both the institution and its employees.

“It is difficult to believe how some BoG’s operating incomes and expenses compare with those of the Bank of England (BOE). For example, BOG spent GH₵1.62 billion (£147.27 million at the 2022 average cedi-pound exchange rate) on its 2,203 employees, that is, £66,851 per employee, about 38x Ghana’s GDP per capita.

“BOE on the other hand, with an average labour force of 4,675 per their 2021-22 financial report, spent £448 million, that is, £95,829 per employee, about 2.6x UK’s GDP per capita. Unlike BOE staff who do not receive loans from their employer, BOG staff owe the bank GH₵566,046 (£51,459) on average or per employee as at the end of 2022.”

“The Bank’s personnel costs amounted to GH₵1.62 billion. With a total of 2,203 employees, this equals an average remuneration of a colossal GH₵735,361 per employee in 2022 or GH₵61,280 monthly per employee, including several allowances. These employees also had staff loans amounting to GH₵1.247 billion, an average of GH₵566,046 per head,” an excerpt of his piece said.

The recently appointed Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB), Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo, has emphasized that his concurrent role as a Parliamentary Candidate will not impede his official responsibilities at the bank.

Mr. Fokuo’s appointment has sparked controversy, particularly from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who question the Bank of Ghana’s decision to endorse a Parliamentary Candidate as the CEO of a financially struggling state bank during an election year.

However, in an interview on Joy FM on Monday, Mr. Fokuo reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his duties at NIB.

He affirmed that he has never allowed his political engagements to overshadow his obligations at the bank, except during his personal time.

“I have no challenges in managing my time between ensuring the bank is run properly and also doing my duties at my leisure time as a P.C. There has not been a time that I have had a challenge in running these duties,” Mr. Fokuo opined.

My churches must be paid comment was a joke – Bawumia

Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia has provided clarification on recent remarks regarding the proposal to compensate churches instead of imposing taxes on them, aiming to recognize their significant contributions as partners in the government’s development initiatives.

Originally made during an engagement with clergy members in the Bono Region last week, Bawumia highlighted the substantial infrastructure investments made by churches in areas such as education and healthcare.

He suggested that rather than taxing churches, his administration would incentivize them to further enhance their societal impact.

In a subsequent campaign event in the North East Region on May 13, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, reiterated his commitment to fostering a strong partnership between the government and faith-based organizations.

Stressing the pivotal role of churches as primary development partners, Bawumia emphasized the potential ramifications of their withdrawal of support, cautioning that Ghana’s stability could be compromised without their contributions.

While addressing his initial remarks, Bawumia clarified that his mention of compensating churches was made in jest, emphasizing that the intent was to underscore the immense value of their work rather than advocating for direct payments.

Instead, he emphasized the need for providing incentives to encourage churches to expand their efforts in societal development.

“The church is the foremost development partner of government,” he said stressing that if their support disappears, “Ghana will collapse because there will be chaos.

“At that point, I was joking and I said people are talking about taxing churches, I don’t believe that and we would not tax churches, because if you look at the work the churches have done, then I was joking, that maybe we should have actually paid them for the work they did no really trying to tax them.

“But I wasn’t really saying we should pay churches, I’m saying that we should give incentives to churches to do more…”

    What Bawumia said initially:

“The question is are we going to tax churches? My view on this is simple. In fact, that is why I say that if you assess the work the church has done, we should rather be paying them rather than they paying us.

“Unless you don’t understand the work the church has done. If you look at the way they try to keep the society together, the universities, the hospitals, the schools, it is just massive. Many churches have hundreds of schools, massive.

“So I don’t see, and I will not have a situation where we are taxing churches. We rather want to give churches incentives to support what the government is doing.

“I want us to be partners in the way the development partners are with us. You are our domestic development partners and we will give you incentives to do more,” he stressed.

No govt has enhanced judiciary infrastructure than mine – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has lauded his government’s unprecedented achievements in enhancing judicial infrastructure.

He expressed this sentiment during the inauguration of the 2024 Africa Conference of the International Association of Women Judges.

Under the theme “The Role of Women Judges in Combatting Negative Cultural Practices in Contemporary Times,” the conference provided a platform to discuss crucial issues surrounding gender equality and judicial activism.

Addressing the jurists, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that investing in judicial infrastructure is crucial to realizing the conference’s theme.

“Indeed, since I assumed office in 2017, my government has made unprecedented progress in the provision of court buildings and residences for judges around the country.

“In 2020, we set out to construct 100 courthouses with residential facilities nationwide. As of February 2024, seventy-nine courthouses have been successfully inaugurated and are in use in various parts of the country. The remaining 21 projects are at various stages of completion and are expected to be completed and inaugurated soon, at least before I leave office,” he stated.

In her remarks, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo welcomed members of the association and acknowledged the president’s support, praising his commitment to democracy.

“We appreciate the strong support we have received from the office of the president. The co-rumination of this support is the presence of His Excellency with us this morning who will officially be opening this conference.

“His Excellency is a lawyer and champion of justice and his name is definably hatched in the legal history of this country as the most distinguished legal practitioner. His belief in the rule of law has been evident during his tenure as president and the judicial service of Ghana has been a beneficiary of the exceptional level of physical and technological infrastructure during this period,” she added.

Cheddar will have a bad influence on the youth if he becomes president – Blakk Rasta

Ghanaian media personality and musician, Blakk Rasta, has expressed concern about the potential impact of Nana Kwame Bediako (Cheddar), the founder of the New Force, if elected president.

During an interview with Onua TV, Blakk Rasta highlighted Cheddar’s disregard for education as a worrying factor.

He emphasized that Cheddar often showcases his wealth and diminishes the significance of education, promoting the misconception that material riches hold more value than knowledge.

Blakk Rasta underscored the dangers of Cheddar‘s attitude, stating that it poses a threat to societal values and ethical principles.

He referenced a recent statement by Cheddar, where he implied that he would have foregone education if he had known he would achieve such wealth at a young age.

Blakk Rasta condemned such remarks, asserting that they undermine the importance of education and contribute to a culture of corruption and moral decline.

“Cheddar, McDan, and Kennedy Agyapong are individuals who oppose education, often conflating wealth with knowledge. They frequently boast about their riches and seek to diminish the value of education by asserting that money holds greater importance.

“Their stance poses a danger to society, as they propagate harmful ideologies. Recently, Cheddar even remarked that he would have foregone schooling had he known he would amass significant wealth at a young age. Such a statement is deeply concerning,” he added.

In recent developments, Cheddar has announced his intention to run for the presidency in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Despite encountering obstacles in registering his political party, he disclosed his alternative plan to run as an independent candidate during an interview on The Point of View aired on Citi TV.

Critiquing the government’s economic policies, Mr. Bediako vowed to steer the nation away from ongoing hardships.

He stressed his dedication to transforming the country into a middle-income nation, creating employment prospects for the youth, and encouraging their meaningful participation in governance.

The revered Gold Stool, known locally as ‘sikadwa‘ and revered as the embodiment of the Asante Kingdom’s spirit, made a rare appearance on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

Its unveiling took place during the grand durbar of Asanteman’s chiefs and people, marking the 25th anniversary of the Asantehene’s coronation.

This decision to publicly display the Gold Stool added a profound sense of magnificence to the anniversary celebration.

According to oral tradition, the Gold Stool was conjured from the heavens by the esteemed fetish priest, Komfo Anokye, some 400 years ago during the kingdom’s infancy.

The event drew distinguished guests, including President Nana Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Bawumia, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and Samira Bawumia, the Vice President’s spouse, alongside other prominent figures from Ghana.

Money invested in National Cathedral could have addressed educational challenges – Clement Apaak

The ranking member on the parliament’s committee on education, Clement Apaak, has stated that the funds allocated to the National Cathedral project could have been better utilized to address infrastructure challenges within the education sector.

During an interview with TV3, Dr. Apaak emphasized that despite the paramount importance of the education sector, it has not received the necessary attention under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

He criticized the government’s failure to prioritize effectively.

Dr. Apaak pointed out that the significant investment in the National Cathedral, a project deemed non-urgent, could have instead been directed towards providing a conducive learning environment for school children across the nation.

“I think it’s an issue of prioritization, for example, look at the quantum of money stake in public resources invested towards the construction of the National Cathedral.

“If those monies were to be applied to procure furniture I believe we would have been talking about millions of pieces of furniture procured and distributed but Akufo-Addo and his government prioritised the construction of the Cathedral which has been described now as the most expensive on the surface of the earth,” he added.

He noted the alarming statistic of over 5,000 schools operating under trees in Ghana.

The Builsa South lawmaker also criticized the persistence of this issue under the current administration, contrasting it with the efforts of the previous Mahama administration, which he claimed had made substantial progress in eradicating schools under trees.

Furthermore, Dr. Apaak highlighted the unacceptable reality of approximately 1 million pupils in Ghana having to sit on the floor to learn.

“What that means is that about one million of our wards go to school every day and they have to sit on the floor or sit on blocks to study. That clearly cannot be acceptable.”

He expressed confidence that his flagbearer, Former President John Dramani Mahama, would address furniture deficits in basic schools to tackle this issue effectively.

UCC level 300 student conducts ICT training for visually impaired peers

In an effort to empower visually impaired students with crucial ICT skills, a third-year student at the University of Cape Coast, Ben Essien, collaborated with the Association of Students with Special Needs to organize a three-day training program.

Taking place from Thursday, May 9th, to Saturday, May 11th, 2024, the training aimed to equip students with the necessary knowledge to effectively navigate computers and develop proficiency in basic computer skills.

Traditionally, visually impaired students have relied on the braille system for reading and writing. However, the manual nature of braille presents challenges, especially with time-sensitive assignments.

Recognizing the importance of embracing technology, Mr. Essien emphasized the significance of introducing ICT skills to visually impaired students, enabling them to independently type and navigate computers.

One of the beneficiaries, Opoku Anokye, expressed gratitude to the Ben Essien movement for its dedicated efforts in empowering individuals with special needs. He praised the initiative as a heartfelt demonstration of support for those with disabilities.

Another beneficiary underscored the importance of the training, noting her lack of basic IT knowledge prior to the sessions. She expressed appreciation for learning essential skills such as word formatting and eagerness to continue learning throughout the program.

Reflecting on the initiative, Mr. Ben Essien reiterated the importance of providing special needs students with essential IT skills to enhance their future prospects. He thanked all participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to the training.

The ICT Skills Training Exercise represents a significant stride towards inclusivity and empowerment, highlighting the University of Cape Coast’s dedication to supporting students with special needs in their academic and professional journeys.

The tragedy unfolded late Sunday night, around 11:00 pm, engulfing their family’s three-bedroom home.

Their mother, Bernice Agyei Karikari, suffered severe injuries, and property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis was destroyed.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horror as the inferno, believed to have originated from a recently installed electric pole nearby, quickly consumed the residence.

Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders to rescue the trapped family, including attempts to unlock the door, the children could not be saved in time.

The Founder of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has opened up about his encounters with betrayal from close associates, expressing deep hurt from the actions of individuals he had positively impacted.

He revealed that these betrayals had a significant impact on his ministry, leading him to question the trust he placed in his inner circle.

Speaking with Bernard Avle on Citi TV, Duncan-Williams shared how he navigated through such betrayals during the early stages of his ministry.

“Betrayal happens every now and then. It hurts when you are betrayed by people you love, trust, poured into them, and done right by them. And those you never expected them to stab you in the back.

“It used to bother me a lot. I mean, it did a lot of damage to me in those days, and it undermined a lot of things that I could have done for the kingdom in those days with ease,” he recounted.

Provide a detailed plan of how tablets will be distributed to SHSs – Minority to Education Ministry

The Minority in Parliament (MP) has called on the Ministry of Education to provide a detailed plan for the distribution of tablets to senior high schools under the Ghana Smart Schools Project (GSSP).

This request aims to ensure thorough monitoring of the distribution process to prevent any schools or students from being excluded.

Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, disclosed this during a field visit to K A Technologies Ltd’s factory and offices in Accra.

The company manufactures the Students’ Mate Tablets distributed by the government as part of the One Student – One Tablet initiative to promote digitalized teaching and learning.

The parliamentary delegation, led by Chairman Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah, toured the company’s facilities and received briefings on its operations from management.

The company’s General Manager, Lawrence Hornuvo, reiterated their commitment to delivering high-quality products and services to the government.

“We pride ourselves in delivering robust, quality products and services in a timely manner and so far, this has not been compromised,” he told the committee.

Chairman Asiamah praised the company’s efforts and urged them to ensure every student has access to a tablet.

“Actually, coming here has demystified our thoughts on how these Tablets were going to get to the students; we have the full understanding of what is on the tablet, its usage and the distribution pattern, quantities to be distributed’.

“We have also learnt that government is not paying for everything before they produce, they are ahead of government and we will like to encourage government to quicken up payments to them to fast-track the process of making sure all students in the country have their tablets,” he added.

Dr. Clement Abas Apaak expressed satisfaction with the visit’s outcome, emphasizing the importance of inclusive distribution in the project.

“So far what we have seen is reassuring. We got a detailed briefing about the tablets, its functionality, the capacity, and we’ve been taken to the unit where the tablets are being assembled. What is also exciting is that this is also a local company which also means that the jobs to be created are going to benefit Ghanaians and the monies being paid as well as the tablets are all going to benefit Ghanaians.

“We have been told that the distribution will be done in phases, we want a full rollout and that is what we are looking for,” he added.

The Members of Parliament were accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education, the TVET Commission, and the Free SHS Secretariat.

The Ghana Smart Schools Project, launched by President Akufo-Addo, aims to transform existing schools into smart schools by providing technology-assisted devices to teachers and students to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

“We pride ourselves in delivering robust, quality products and services in a timely manner and so far, this has not been compromised,” he told the committee.

“Actually, coming here has demystified our thoughts on how these Tablets were going to get to the students; we have the full understanding of what is on the tablet, its usage and the distribution pattern, quantities to be distributed’, he said.

Adopting dollar as Ghana’s currency won’t stabilise the economy – ASEPA

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has rejected proposals put forward by the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwabena Kwakye, advocating for the adoption of the US Dollar as Ghana’s currency to stabilize the nation’s economy.

The Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson, countered that Ghana’s primary challenges in achieving economic stability stem from prolonged fiscal irresponsibility and excessive borrowing, rather than the switch to the US Dollar.

During an interview with David Kwaku Saforo-Sakyi on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily, Mr. Thompson asserted that Ghana’s ongoing economic difficulties should be attributed to the fiscal mismanagement of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, the actions of the Bank of Ghana’s governor, and President Akufo-Addo.

“We are here not because our currency is not held in dollars, we are here because of the recklessness of Ken Ofori-Atta, the governor of the Central Bank and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The root cause of our problem is recklessness, borrowing and people who just don’t understand simple economic management who implemented faze economic restructuring that has thrown the economy into a cyclic spiral now going back into a debt hole and the solution is not dollarisation.

“I have always asked myself, why did the government, after all the recklessness of Ken Ofori-Atta, still decide that if they were going under a debt restructuring programme, Ken Ofori-Atta was the person they were going to allow to oversee that debt restructuring, I was surprised when he decided to restructure our domestic debt.”

Furthermore, Mr Thompson criticized the decision to restructure Ghana’s domestic debt, describing it as detrimental to the stability of the Cedi.

Pollution, power outages to be blamed for prolonged water shortages in Nsawam – GWCL

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) has announced its proactive engagement in addressing the water supply challenges in the Nsawam township, following widespread concerns voiced by residents over prolonged water shortages.

The Communications Manager for Ghana Water Limited, Stanley Martey, expressed concern about the difficulties encountered at the Nsawam treatment plant, which not only serves Nsawam but also adjacent areas such as Pokuase and Amasaman.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Martey identified two primary factors contributing to the water supply issues in Nsawam and neighboring towns: pollution of the Densu River and recent power supply irregularities.

Mr. Martey disclosed that efforts are underway to install new pumps, which is expected to enhance water supply in the region once completed.

“We have a very serious challenge with the Nsawam treatment plant that serves the entire Nsawam area, Pokuase, Amasaman and all that. That plant is less than 10 years old but unfortunately, all the pumps broke down at the same time so we are replacing them.

“The pumps broke down as a result of the pollution of the water in the Densu River around the Nsamam area. And then there are the numerous power outages that we have been experiencing. So we have had to change all the pumps in that area. And you know pumps are quite expensive.

“We needed to import them into the system. So we are almost done with the installation of the pumps and when we are done, at least water flow to the Nsawam municipality will improve.”

This is why no one but Otumfuo wears 3 golden triangular necklaces during durbars

At the grand durbar commemorating his 25th anniversary on Sunday, May 12, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, bedecked himself with three golden triangular necklaces known as “Adaaboɔ.”

During a live telecast on GTV, a historian, Nana Frimpong, shed light on the significance of Otumfuo‘s necklaces. He likened the Adaaboɔ to medals bestowed upon soldiers for their bravery in war.

Nana Frimpong elaborated that, within Asante tradition, the Adaaboɔ necklace is exclusively reserved for chiefs who have achieved remarkable feats for the kingdoms, either personally or through their lineage.

He emphasized that this adornment is deeply rooted in Asante customs, where the attire of chiefs at traditional events mirrors the hierarchical structure of the kingdom.

Furthermore, he explained that, similar to military services where ranks dictate attire, a chief’s rank determines the adornments they are entitled to wear at such durbars.

“The necklace is a triangle, originating from ancient Israel and Egypt. The Amanhene, paramount chiefs wear one, while the Abrempong, other royals do not.

“However, the Otumfuo is entitled to wear up to three. The Abrempong, though royals, cannot don the Adaaboɔ because the hierarchical order does not permit them. It is exclusively the Amanhene who may wear one, and the Asantehene, up to three,” he explained.

“These ornaments are akin to medals given to soldiers who have distinguished themselves in war. Your rank determines the medal you are entitled to wear. This is similar to the ‘ahenema’ the sandals that they wear.

“That is why you see some of the chiefs in golden sandals. Not every chief has the privilege to adorn themselves in gold from head to toe,” he said.

Treason-felony trial involving Barker-Vormawor to be heard on May 20

The treason trial of the convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been postponed to May 20, 2024.

The court was scheduled to address jurisdictional matters following a motion filed by the activist’s legal team challenging the constitutionality of the charges.

Additionally, there was an application requesting the judge to refer the case to the Supreme Court.

In anticipation of Monday’s proceedings, Mr. Barker-Vormawor had previously urged supporters of the #FixTheCountry movement on his social media account to attend the court session to show solidarity.

However, the trial did not proceed as planned due to the sitting judge’s participation in a training program.

Mr. Barker-Vormawor was arrested, charged, and is currently facing trial for a social media post that police investigators alleged contained a clear intent to undermine the constitution of Ghana.

He was apprehended on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Kotoka International Airport upon his return to the country from the United Kingdom.

The case has been adjourned to May 20, 2024, to determine the court’s jurisdiction and possibly proceed with the trial.

First pig kidney transplant patient dies

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has announced the passing of the recipient of the first-ever genetically modified pig kidney transplant, Richard Slayman, two months after the groundbreaking surgery.

Slayman had been battling end-stage kidney disease prior to the procedure. Although the exact cause of his death remains undetermined, MGH has stated that there is no evidence linking it to the transplant.

In addition to kidney disease, Mr Slayman grappled with Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

“Mr. Slayman will forever be regarded as a beacon of hope for countless transplant patients worldwide, and we are profoundly thankful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation,” MGH stated.

His medical journey began with a human kidney transplant in 2018, which initially succeeded but saw a decline after five years.

While previous attempts to transplant organs from genetically modified pigs had failed, Mr Slayman’s operation was hailed as a historic breakthrough.

Following his pig kidney transplant on March 16, his medical team confirmed that he no longer required dialysis, indicating the successful function of the new organ.

The representative for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has highlighted that approximately 1 million students in Ghana are forced to learn while seated on the floor.

In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues with Kemmini Amanor on Sunday, May 12, Dr. Apaak noted that this situation is considered acceptable.

He further stated that his party’s leader, Former President John Dramani Mahama, pledges to resolve the issue of furniture deficits in basic schools.

As the ranking member on the parliament’s education committee, Dr. Apaak emphasized Mahama’s commitment to addressing the shortage.

“What that means is that about one million of our wards go to school every day and they have to sit on the floor or sit on blocks to study. That clearly cannot be acceptable.”

Ghanaian political contestants must be assessed based on UK candidate standards – Analyst

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has advocated for Ghanaian flagbearers to be evaluated using standards akin to those applied to politicians in the United Kingdom (UK), believing this approach would enhance the expected quality.

Referring to a recent UK report by the Constitution Unit, Dr. Kwakye highlights the public’s demand for stronger mechanisms to ensure political integrity. The report indicates widespread support for independent regulators capable of launching investigations into ministerial misconduct.

Dr. Kwakye suggests a similar grading system for Ghanaian political contestants, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.

Despite observing promising policies from Ghana’s presidential candidates for the 2024 elections, Dr. Kwakye expresses skepticism about their ability to deliver on these promises.

He questions whether proposals such as economic transformation, lean government, fiscal discipline, and natural resource ownership will materialize if the candidates are elected.

Dr. Kwakye’s remarks on his platform reflect a cautious optimism about the candidates’ policies, juxtaposed with concerns about their implementation.

“I am going to refocus our paradigm for natural resource management. For the most part, Ghana has not maximised the benefits of our natural resources.

“Since the days of the Portuguese in the 15th century, gold has always been taken out of Ghana. We haven’t benefitted much from our natural resources; I am going to change that paradigm. I am going to bring a bigger focus on ownership of our natural resources.

“It is as if right now we don’t own our natural resources. I believe that if we do the exploration; and we are going to empower our universities and the geological service department to do the exploration, once we explore that we have seven gold belts that we haven’t yet discovered. Once we have explored and we know that the gold is here, the new policy is going be that the ownership of those resources will be one hundred per cent owned by Ghanaians,” he stated.

EOCO’s intention is to terminate Cecilia Dapaah’s money laundering case – Adam Bona

Security analyst Dr. Adam Bona has urged the Speaker of Parliament to launch an investigation into the actions of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the discovery of money at the residence of former Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

Dr. Bona criticized EOCO for allegedly returning the money to Cecilia Dapaah without conducting a thorough investigation after the expiration of the warrant issued by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

In a recorded video, the security analyst emphasized the importance of a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry to uncover the truth behind EOCO’s conduct and other issues within the anti-fraud agency.

“I’m calling on the Right Hon. Speaker of Parliament to institute a probe into the Cecelia Dapaah cash saga. I have a feeling EOCO is not telling us the truth. I now can say with certainty that EOCO has also become the headquarters of corruption. There’s the need to investigate what happened between these two institutions under the executive; EOCO and Special Prosecutor are all under the Attorney General and so to have EOCO being handed the file to investigate this under money laundering which falls under them and to have them come back to tell us that they couldn’t do anything about it is mind boggling and so as citizen and not a spectator I will ask Parliament to institute a probe into them”.

“There are a lot of things going on at EOCO that some of us find unfortunate. The boss of EOCO is not telling Ghanaians the truth, she is telling us half-truths about the money we are talking about,” he noted

Expressing concern over alleged misconduct at EOCO, Dr. Bona highlighted the need for transparency and accountability, particularly regarding the handling of the Cecilia Dapaah cash saga.

He called for scrutiny into the relationship between EOCO and the Office of the Special Prosecutor, both of which operate under the Attorney General’s purview, questioning why EOCO failed to take action despite being tasked with investigating potential money laundering.

Dr. Bona underscored the significance of shedding light on undisclosed activities at EOCO through a thorough probe, emphasizing the importance of citizen engagement in promoting accountability.

The public exchange between EOCO and the Office of the Special Prosecutor in recent weeks has fueled speculation and calls for greater scrutiny into their respective roles in investigating the origins of the substantial sum of money discovered at the former Sanitation Minister’s residence.

I need your help to succeed – Finance Minister-designate tells GRA

Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has emphasized the vital role of revenue collection institutions in bolstering government income to meet Ghana’s development needs.

He stressed that insufficient revenue would force the government to resort to loans to finance the budget, underscoring the importance of robust revenue generation.

During his visit to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) staff in Aflao, Dr. Adam lauded their efforts in mobilizing revenue for critical government programs and urged them to sustain their momentum.

“I came here to encourage you to double your efforts and not to talk down on the significant progress that you have achieved in recent years”.

“I have just a few months to end my tenure as Finance Minister but help me, let’s work together for this one-year stewardship as a Finance Minister to be memorable for me and all of us so we can say that during the time Amin Adam was Finance Minister, he worked with GRA Officials and revenue collection was the best and this is the legacy we must leave”.

He expressed his commitment to supporting the GRA staff, describing himself as their ‘cheerleader’ and pledging to stand by them throughout their journey, emphasizing collective success and accountability.

Dr. Adam outlined plans for reforms, including staff promotions, renovation of staff accommodations, and provision of necessary resources to enhance motivation and efficiency.

Acknowledging his limited tenure as Finance Minister, he urged collaboration to make their stewardship memorable by achieving optimal revenue collection.

Addressing concerns about public perception, Dr. Adam warned of sanctions for staff whose conduct tarnishes the GRA’s reputation, emphasizing the need to restore public confidence.

Commissioner General of the GRA, Ms. Julie Essiam, praised Dr. Adam’s dedication to staff welfare and echoed his call for increased revenue collection, especially during an election year.

She urged staff to surpass revenue targets and emphasized their pivotal role in various strategies aimed at revenue growth and meeting fiscal benchmarks.

“Guys it is possible and doable, this year, you and your commissioner are going to prove doubters wrong. We as your top management have sat down and deliberated among some pillars which include revenue growth, the IMF structural benchmarks, the Medium Term Revenue Strategy and you are key in all these strategies so help us,”.

Collins Dauda never incited chaos during voter registration at Kukuom – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has responded to the arrest of Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda, concerning disturbances during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise in Kukuom.

Despite the Ghana Police Service’s announcement of his involvement, the NDC asserts that Dauda committed no crime.

They condemned his arrest and questioned the police’s professionalism in handling the matter.

“The NDC condemns in no uncertain terms the unprofessional haste of the Ghana Police Service to publish the so-called arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, and create the impression all over the media as though he has committed a crime. For emphasis, Hon. Collins Dauda has committed no crime. The allegation by the Police that he was involved in some disturbances at the ongoing voter registration in Kukuom is palpably false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves”.

“We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration center on Saturday, 11th May, 2024. Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his Constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency,” a statement signed by its National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi noted.

According to the NDC, the chaos was caused by New Patriotic Party (NPP)-affiliated thugs who blocked the registration center, preventing NDC supporters from registering and engaging in violence.

They claim Dauda was not present during the incident, as he was monitoring registration elsewhere in his constituency.

The NDC further accuses the police of bias and urges them to uphold impartiality and protect all stakeholders in the registration process.

In a detailed statement, the NDC provides a timeline of events, alleging attacks on their supporters by NPP thugs and highlighting instances of police inaction.

They emphasize their commitment to peace and adherence to the law while condemning violence and advocating for fair treatment from law enforcement. The statement is signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC.

Below is the full NDC statement

NDC RESPONDS TO ARREST OF THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR ASUTIFI SOUTH, HON. COLLINS DAUDA IN CONNECTION WITH ONGOING VOTER REGISTRATION EXERCISE.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken note of a statement by the Ghana Police Service, that it has arrested the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda for his alleged involvement in some disturbances at a Voter Registration Center at Kukuom in the Asunafo South constituency in the Ahafo Region.

    Having had the benefit of the facts surrounding the said incident, the party wishes to respond as follows;

    1. On or about 10:00am on Saturday, 11th May, 2024, a group of thugs belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party numbering about 40, besieged the Asunafo South Constituency registration center at Kukuom.
    2. Wearing face masks and dressed in what looked like military apparel, these NPP thugs unleashed violence on the registration center. They attacked and chased away perceived first-time NDC voters numbering about 150, who were in a queue waiting to be registered.
    3. These hooded NPP thugs who were led by one “Anointing”, threatened the accredited NDC agent, Police Officers and other observers, insisting that they will not allow the first-time voters to be registered. The attacks persisted from 10:00am until 3:00pm on that fateful day.
    4. At about 3:00pm, the Police at Kukuom called for reinforcement from the Regional Police Command at Goaso. This did not however deter the NPP bandits, who continued to engage in heated verbal exchanges with the Police at the scene, insisting that they will not allow the perceived supporters of the NDC to register.
    5. In the midst of the pandemonium, one Daniel Arthur, a known NDC member and the Assembly Member for the Denyase Electoral Area: Abu, the NDC Coordinator for Asarekrom Electoral Area as well as the NDC’s registration agent at the center, were severely brutalized by the NPP thugs.
    6. Upon hearing about the ongoing chaos, some NDC supporters, rushed to the scene to ascertain the situation for themselves and offer some support to the NDC supporters who were under attack. Upon seeing the NDC supporters, some of the NPP thugs bolted. Calm was restored at the center for sometime, allowing some of the harassed supporters of the NDC to register.
    7. In a sudden turn of events, one of the NPP thugs drove across and blocked the road when the Asutifi South NDC supporters were leaving the center. He then pulled a gun and began to shoot indiscriminately at the NDC supporters in their vehicle. At this point, the NDC supporters in exercise of their right to self-defence, shot back to deter the thugs. No one sustained gunshot injuries.
    8. This fact was corroborated by the Police in their investigative report read to Hon. Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, in the presence of Hon. Eric Opoku, MP for Asunafo South, at a meeting on the morning of Sunday, 12th May, 2024.
    9. We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration center on Saturday, 11th May, 2024. Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his Constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency.
    10. Several NDC supporters who were hospitalised after being brutalized by the NPP thugs, have since lodged official complaints with the Kukuom Police.
    11. The NDC condemns in no uncertain terms the unprofessional haste of the Ghana Police Service to publish the so-called arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, and create the impression all over the media as though he has committed a crime. For emphasis, Hon. Collins Dauda has committed no crime. The allegation by the Police that he was involved in some disturbances at the ongoing voter registration in Kukuom is palpably false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves.
    12. The National Democratic Congress reiterates our commitment to peace in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. We are a law-abiding political party committed to respecting the laws of the country. Our Parliamentary Candidates, agents and supporters throughout the country have so far comported themselves in the ongoing exercise, even in the face of extreme provocation and in some cases, violent attacks.
    13. We are however concerned by the widespread violent incidents across the country in which NDC supporters have been at the receiving end of unprovoked brutalities, intimidation and harassments from the ruling New Patriotic Party, as happened in Adugyama in the Ahafo-ano South East Constituency in the Ashanti region, few days ago.
    14. We wish to remind the Ghana Police Service of their responsibility to protect all stakeholders in the ongoing voter registration exercise. The Ghana Police must display professionalism and impartiality in maintaining law and order, and be fair to all actors in the political space.
    15. We cannot accept a situation where the Police choose to watch on and take little action against NPP thugs who unleash unprovoked violence on NDC supporters in broad daylight.
    16. Even though we in the NDC will never initiate any such attacks, let it be known, that our supporters reserve the right to defend themselves against any violence or attacks.

    SIGNED.
    SAMMY GYAMFI ESQ.
    National Communications Officer

2024 elections: I will not choose a co-driver over a humble mate – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has recently shared his viewpoint favoring leadership traits such as humility and patience over impulsiveness.

He conveyed this through a vivid analogy involving a scenario of a driver’s mate aspiring to assume the driver’s role.

In a Twitter post, Anyidoho articulated his perspective, highlighting the preference for a modest mate willing to wait for their turn to drive, as opposed to an arrogant one who considers themselves superior to the driver.

“I prefer a humble mate who admits he wants to wait for his time to drive, to an arrogant mate who says he is a co-driver and believed he was more important than the driver…” Anyidoho stated in his tweet.

“The man who prides himself in being a co-driver, so he considered himself to be better than his boss and not a humble mate, took over and messed up all the driving formula. Damn!” he wrote.

This metaphorical narrative suggests a caution against overeagerness and the consequences of disregarding hierarchy and experience.

Mr Anyidoho’s analogy is interpreted by political observers as a commentary on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, representing the eager mate and the presumptuous co-driver, respectively, in the context of the 2024 elections.

Despite his affiliation with the NDC, Anyidoho has openly thrown his support behind Bawumia’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of humility and respect for leadership succession.

“We will ensure compliance with existing regulations and deter unauthorized sand winning operations through increased surveillance and enforcement measures,” he explained.

Taking decisive action, the EPA, in collaboration with various security agencies, has stepped up efforts to curb these unregulated activities.

Commissioning of Kumasi Airport is similar to serving fufu devoid of soup – Asiedu Nketiah tells govt

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to commission the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi while it is still under construction.

He questioned the wisdom of inaugurating a project that is not yet finished, suggesting that waiting for its completion would have been more prudent than rushing for political gain.

In a video shared by Nana Yaa Brefo on Instagram, Asiedu Nketiah expressed his disbelief, stating, “If it had been completed, aeroplanes would have landed there. It’s like making fufu without soup and asking us to eat. I’ve already mentioned that the president’s judgment should be examined.”There are bulldozers working everywhere, and you’re telling me it’s finished,” he stated.

He emphasized the need to examine the president’s judgment, pointing out ongoing construction activities at the site.

Regarding the commissioning of the airport, the splendid Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially opened on May 10, 2024.

TV3 and GTV Ghana showcased the airport’s interior through a video, highlighting the newly installed facilities available for public use.

The interior design features strategically organized operational sections, with glass walls on staircases to enhance visual aesthetics. Visitors are greeted with the welcoming sign “Nante Yie,” meaning “safe journey,” at the entrance.

The airport is expected to elevate the Ashanti Region’s international profile and contribute to the local economy’s prosperity.

The launch event was attended by various stakeholders and government agencies, marking the facility’s official commencement of public operations.

During his address, President Akufo-Addo expressed his satisfaction with the project’s completion and addressed skeptics who doubted its realization.

Fix our roads or lose our votes in December Polls – Nyakrom residents to govt

The youth of Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region organized a demonstration to protest against the government’s neglect of various issues plaguing the town.

Despite numerous petitions to the government via the District Assembly regarding the reconstruction of a bridge, the improvement of the health center, the completion of an astro turf project, and the repair of road networks, their concerns have still not been addressed.

In a show of discontent, the youth marched through the streets of Nyakrom adorned in red and black attire, brandishing placards with messages like “No bridge, no vote,” “Health center with only six beds,” and “Nyakrom deserves better social amenities.” Other placards read: “Males and females sleep in the same ward,” “No astro turf, no Akwambo festival,” “NPP government has disappointed us,” “Fix the bridge,” “Complete the astro turf project,” and “Fix Nyakrom’s town roads.”

The protest disrupted traffic flow along the main Swedru/Nyakrom road for over seven hours, inconveniencing commuters and causing significant congestion.

Following the demonstration, Mr. Bright Mensah, the Public Relations Officer of the Agona Nyakrom Youth Association, addressed the media, revealing that the protest had been postponed due to constraints imposed by the town’s chiefs.

He highlighted the dire state of healthcare facilities, emphasizing that the Nyakrom Health Centre housed a mere six beds and lacked adequate medical staff.

Mensah also drew attention to an abandoned astro turf project initiated by a local resident in 2019, which was handed over to the government for completion but has since languished for five years. He questioned how the town could nurture sporting talents without proper infrastructure, expressing dismay over the absence of asphalt roads in Nyakrom.

Asserting that no political campaigning would be permitted until basic amenities were provided, Mensah urged authorities to prioritize the aforementioned projects to improve living standards and foster peace in the town.

Founder of Church of Pentecost rejected me when I opted to be his spiritual son – Duncan-Williams

On Sunday, May 12, 2024, the Founder of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, celebrated his 67th birthday.

As part of the day’s events, the influential figure in Ghana’s charismatic faith community sat down for an interview to reflect on his extensive years in ministry.

During the interview with Bernard Avle of Citi FM/Citi TV, Archbishop Duncan-Williams reminisced about the early days of his ministry and recounted facing rejection from some prominent figures in the faith.

One such rejection occurred after he completed Bible school in Nigeria. Duncan-Williams shared how he approached James McKeown, the Founder of the Church of Pentecost, hoping to work under him.

Unfortunately, McKeown turned him down, explaining that the Church of Pentecost wasn’t focusing on grooming evangelists at the time.

“I didn’t have a mentor; I forced myself to be mentored and to get help but I wasn’t accepted. I was talking to Bishop Dag today and I remember some of the things I had to go through and some of the people I went to see for help. I went to James McKeown, the founder of Church of Pentecost, when I came back from Bible school in Nigeria and I wanted to be an evangelist at the Church of Pentecost.

“And they had had a lot of experience with people who left the church as evangelists and didn’t do right and so he said that they are not interested in an evangelist. So, he prayed for me and he let me go,” he narrated.

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams also described a similar experience when he approached Archbishop Benson Idahosa.

He explained to Idahosa that he felt called to serve in Nigeria, under Idahosa’s leadership. However, Idahosa advised him to return to Ghana, affirming that Ghana was indeed his calling.

Let’s do whatever it takes to save our environment from galamsey activities – Otumfuo urges

On the auspicious occasion commemorating his twenty-five years of reign, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II passionately addressed the pressing issue of environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities, commonly known as ‘galamsey’.

As the 16th ruler to ascend the esteemed Golden Stool, he emphasized the urgent necessity to combat galamsey through all available means.

His discourse conveyed a profound sense of duty, urging the present generation to respect and safeguard the environmental legacy passed down by their ancestors.

“Our top priority must be the reclamation of our environment from the ravages of galamsey. We cannot be the generation that destroys the most gracious heritage bequeathed to us by our forefathers to satisfy the greed of a few miscreants. For whatever it takes we must defeat this scourge,” he said.

In addition to environmental concerns, Asantehene also articulated a vision for economic rejuvenation, highlighting the need to nurture Ghana’s economy and empower its entrepreneurs.

He recognized the interdependent relationship between environmental preservation and economic prosperity, advocating for initiatives that promote sustainable development.

As the country stands on the brink of electoral processes, Asantehene’s guidance extended to matters of civic responsibility, warning against actions that could undermine the integrity of the democratic system.

His appeals reflect a profound commitment to principles of good governance and the collective welfare of Ghanaians.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intervention serves as a rallying cry for unity against galamsey, urging action for environmental recovery, economic resilience, and political stability.

  • Tweneboah Kodua is not qualified to serve as NIB’s MD – Minority to govt

Tweneboah Kodua is not qualified to serve as NIB’s MD – Minority to govt

The Minority in Parliament has strongly objected to the naming of the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate for Manso Nkwanta, Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo, as the new Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB).

In a press release endorsed by Dr. Kwabena Donkor, the Ranking Member on the Committee on Employment, Social Welfare, and State-Owned Enterprises, the minority MPs voiced their apprehensions regarding the politicization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

They argue that such appointments erode public confidence in the government’s capacity to efficiently manage national assets.

Branding it a politically motivated appointment, the NDC MPs assert that the bank requires a leadership team with formidable managerial expertise and a robust recovery strategy to resuscitate its current “life support” status.

“To appoint a Parliamentary Candidate six months into an election beggars belief. The integrity and or the lack of it in this appointment is a clear sign that the Government and the Bank of Ghana have no desire to resuscitate the ailing Bank but are only interested in milking the dying cow.”

“The ignoble thinking behind the appointment must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians,” the statement read.

These objections come following the announcement of Mr. Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo’s assumption of office as the Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB), succeeding Samuel Sarpong.

His appointment becomes effective from Monday, May 13, 2024.

A memo circulated among staff members of the Bank clarified that Mr. Fokuo’s appointment was made by “the majority shareholder.”

It further detailed that Philip Ofori-Asante has been nominated as Deputy Managing Director, following Mr. Fokuo’s appointment.

However, the Minority in Parliament contends that the Bank of Ghana is mandated by Act 612 to approve all senior bank appointments in the Banking and Deposit-taking Sector.

Consequently, the BoG holds a legal obligation to halt this appointment in its regulatory capacity, “assuming the President is misled by Advisors for obvious political considerations.”

The Minority urged President Akuffo Addo to reconsider Mr. Fokuo’s appointment, urging him to prioritize the integrity and business sustainability of the National Investment Bank.

“We demand the reversal of this appointment and a more transparent and impartial selection process that prioritises merit, competence and meritocracy over political affiliation,” they added.

Dr. Boateng announced plans to streamline the vaccination process, allowing eligible individuals to receive their shots at any health facility.

This initiative aims to bolster immunity against COVID-19, particularly with 40% of the targeted population still awaiting full vaccination.

Expressing concern over the relatively low vaccination rate in the region, Dr. Boateng urged residents to embrace the vaccines and discard misconceptions, emphasizing their life-saving potential.

He cited data indicating a significant decline in COVID-19 cases from 18 in 2023 to just two in 2024, detected through surveillance efforts.

The primary goal, Dr. Boateng emphasized, is to encourage unvaccinated individuals to avail themselves of vaccination services at their convenience.

He cited examples of vaccinated Ghanaians who did not experience the alleged side effects of infertility or impotence, urging others to follow suit.

Furthermore, Dr. Boateng highlighted the significance of African Vaccination Week, observed annually during the last week of April, in conjunction with World Immunization Week.

This event aims to prioritize immunization on national and regional agendas through advocacy and collaborative partnerships, facilitating the delivery of vital lifesaving interventions alongside vaccination efforts.
