Video: Ghanaian soldier in tears after girlfriend failed loyalty test

A young Ghanaian army recruit experienced heartbreak when his girlfriend failed a loyalty test he arranged.

Dressed in his army uniform on his way home from work, the soldier was approached by Streetz Traffic, a content creator, to test his girlfriend’s fidelity.

Confident in his relationship, the soldier agreed to the test, asking his girlfriend, Tracy, over the phone to name her partner. Tracy mentioned another man, Sammy, instead of him.

This revelation devastated Ernest, leaving him angry and betrayed. He was unable to comprehend Tracy’s response, having left her at home in Breman, Ashanti Region, that morning.

Ernest’s distress was evident as he sat in anguish, expressing his emotions in an open gutter, despite attempts by Streetz Traffic to console him.

Opinions among Ghanaians varied upon viewing the video, with some dismissing it as staged.

In a separate incident, a young man demanded his ex-girlfriend return a television set he had bought her after she left him for another man. He expressed his frustration during a phone conversation with his ex-lover.

National Biosafety Authority disapproves cultivation of 14 GMO seeds

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has clarified that it hasn’t authorized the cultivation of seeds for 14 genetically modified (GM) products in Ghana.

According to an official statement, these GM events are approved solely for food, feed, or processing purposes, not for cultivation within the country.

Previously, the Peasant Farmers Association expressed concerns about potential risks to Ghana’s native agricultural systems due to this decision.

However, the NBA emphasizes that while these seed products are registered, it’s only to facilitate their importation by interested parties. Importers must obtain an import permit from the NBA, adhering to regulatory protocols.

The NBA asserts that despite the registration, these GM products haven’t been imported for food, feed, or processing yet.

The authority, responsible for regulating GM products, follows procedures outlined in the Biosafety Act, 2011 (Act 831), and international best practices in evaluating applications.

Reassuring the public, the NBA affirms the safety of approved GM products, such as the Bt Cowpea developed by SARI, and the 14 events submitted by Bayer West-Central Africa S.A and Syngenta South Africa. These products, including eight maize and six soybean varieties, are meant for direct use as food, feed, or processing, not for planting.

The NBA stresses that these registered products are not seeds for planting but for food, feed, or processing.

The approval process, conducted under the Biosafety Act, involved thorough risk assessment by the NBA Technical Advisory Committee.

“The Authority therefore wishes to assure Ghanaians of the safety of GM product(s) that have received the NBA’s approval; notably the Bt Cowpea submitted by SARI and the fourteen (14) events submitted by Bayer West-Central Africa S.A and Syngenta South Africa which are intended for food, feed or for processing.

“Registered products are not seeds for planting but for food, feed or processing the 14 approved products, made up of eight (8) maize and six (6) soybean events must be emphasised and are not intended for cultivation.

“They are, rather, grains for direct use as food, feed or for processing as stated above. This approval was granted under Section 13 of the Biosafety Act, 2011 (Act 831) and Regulation 15 of the Biosafety (Management of Biotechnology) Regulations, 2019 (LI 2383) following the evaluation of data and information supplied by the applicant and a thorough risk assessment by the NBA Technical Advisory Committee (TAC),” the statement added.

Ghanaian workers among the least productive globally – Prof Adei

Renowned economist, Professor Stephen Adei has conducted a comparative analysis of the productivity levels of workers from Ghana and Togo.

His research findings indicate that Ghanaian workers are among the least productive globally.

Professor Adei emphasized that Togolese workers exhibit higher work quality compared to their Ghanaian counterparts, as per his research.

He noted that employers often prefer Togolese workers due to their superior productivity levels.

“…The Ghanaian worker is one of the least productive workers in the world when they are in Ghana. In fact, was it ten years ago the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences asked me to give a lecture on productivity in Ghana and I found that in Africa given the same conditions, qualifications and everything else, the Ghanaian worker was among the least productive worker in Africa,” the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration said.

He added “To me what shocked me in that research was that the Togolese worker was more productive than the Ghanaian which I wanted to see evidence of until I started looking at Togolese workers in construction in Ghana.

“Their productivity is far superior to Ghanaian workers. Masons, electricians, tailors, and often people think they are Ghanaians because they speak Ewe, but they are not Ghanaians. And some of the construction people look for them because of their quality work,” he stated.

Greedy bastard, you are rallying NDC supporters against the govt that is feeding you – Ayindoho to Aseidu Nketia

Former deputy general-secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has made allegations against the current National Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketia (General Mosquito).

Taking to the X platform, Mr Anyidoho accused Mr Nketia of engaging in actions that he deems hypocritical and self-serving.

Mr Anyidoho’s accusations are centered around what he perceives as inconsistencies in Mr Nketia’s behavior and a failure to uphold ethical standards within the party.

Specifically, Mr Anyidoho pointed out Aseidu Nketia’s past and present involvement with the Public Services Board (PSB), suggesting that despite holding different positions within the party, Aseidu Nketia continues to benefit from ties to the PSB.

Furthermore, he accused General Mosquito of inciting NDC supporters to protest against the government while simultaneously benefiting from governmental support himself.

Mr Anyidoho condemned Nketia for allegedly exploiting his position within the party to rally supporters against the very government that provides for him.

In addition to criticizing Mr Nketia’s actions, he implied complicity on the part of media figures who support Mr Nketia, suggesting that they too benefit from government resources while maintaining an appearance of independence.

“Greedy bastard! As General Secretary u were on PSB; as National Chairman u r on PSB. Yet you incite innocent NDC supporters to rally against the Govt that is feeding you. The media guys who support you r also chopping from Govt & they think we don’t know”, he wrote.

  • Probe Ataa-Mills’ death since NDC is interested in that of John Kumah’s and 2 others – Anyidoho to govt

Probe Ataa-Mills’ death since NDC is interested in that of John Kumah’s and 2 others – Anyidoho to govt

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has expressed his frustration over the lack of progress in resolving the murders of former President John Fiifi Atta-Mills.

His concerns surfaced following the call by the NDC’s national chairman, Aseidu Nketia (General Mosquito), for the government to investigate the deaths of three Members of Parliament (MPs).

On his X platform, Anyidoho shared his apprehension, stating, “If Mosquito is soooo concerned about the killing of 3 NPP MPs, I am also soooo concerned about the killing of President Atta-Mills.”

In an opinion piece, Mr Anyidoho analyzed the reactions surrounding John Kumah’s death, highlighting what he perceives as hypocrisy in political discourse.

He pointed out the inconsistency of individuals who engage in partisan politics while demanding transparency regarding Kumah’s death but criticize others, including himself, for seeking the same regarding the late President John Evans Atta-Mills.

Mr Anyidoho raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Atta-Mills’ death, suggesting that poisoning might have been involved.

He emphasized the importance of transparency, especially considering Atta-Mills’ status as Ghana’s former president and the first head of state to die in office.

Mr Anyidoho argued that the government has a responsibility to disclose the cause of death in such cases.

“In my belief of being consistent with my principled convictions – especially on the national platform, I have no qualms about the calls being made for the cause of John Kumah’s death to be investigated and made public especially because he was a public official on the payroll of the Republic of Ghana.

However it is very interesting and stinkingly hypocritical that, very unprincipled characters who choose to play stinking silly partisan politics with every issue, are jumping all over themselves on the issue of John Kumah’s death, but turn around to call some of us names for demanding same as regards the death of the late President John Evans Atta-Mills .

Since the issue of alleged poisoning has entered the political arena, who says that the late President John Evans Atta-Mills did not also die from poisoning?

“I repeat: who says the late President Atta-Mills did not also die from poisoning? Both the late President Atta-Mills and John Kumah, were state actors of public repute – but the late President was the Number One citizen of Ghana and also the first ever President of the Republic to have died in office and that makes it more of an important imperative for the State to tell the nation the cause of death,”.

  • Govt’s Performance Tracker is useless – Bawah Mogtari

Former President John Dramani Mahama‘s special aide, Joyce Bawah Mograri, has criticized the government’s Performance Tracker, calling it a wasteful use of resources and accusing it of being misleading.

In a tweet, she expressed disappointment that the tracker failed to monitor the performance of the Akufo Addo/Bawumia administration on corruption, instead focusing on other government projects.

“To my utter surprise and disappointment, the misleading GoG Performance Tracker, failed to track the performance of Akufo Addo/Bawumia’s performance on corruption. What a waste of precious resources! Tell us how you and your boys and girls have perfected the art of corruption.

“We are told that 80% of government projects and contracts are single-sourced, and individuals and companies are handpicked by this nepotistic government and awarded juicy contracts. That is what this NPP government should be tracking down and paying back to the now miserably empty public purse,” she wrote on her x platform.

The Performance Tracker, launched in Accra on April 10, monitors government performance across various sectors, including over 13,000 projects nationwide.

Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, presented the platform, hailing it as a milestone in transparency and accountability.

He emphasized its user-friendly nature and encouraged active participation in governance.

“It’s user-friendly, with both website and mobile interfaces,” the foGoase Ayirebi lawmaker said.

Oppong-Nkrumah noted that the tracker builds upon the Delivery Tracker of 2020, reflecting the government’s commitment to continuous improvement. He commended Vice President Bawumia for the initiative and urged citizens to utilize the platform for informed governance participation.

“Congratulations to VP Bawumia for this initiative. I encourage all to use it for informed governance participation,” the former Information Minister wrote on his X platform.

During the launch at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Oppong Nkrumah highlighted the tracker as a database showcasing government projects.

He emphasized its accessibility, allowing the public to track project statuses and even conduct physical inspections using their mobile phones.

“This government is the digitalization government and the general public can personally check with their phones, the status of the projects and even make a physical inspection if they wish to do so,” the Ofaose Ayirebi lawmaker said.

  • Your stance against LGBTQ+ activities must be upheld when you become president – Association of Progressive Muslims to Bawumia

Your stance against LGBTQ+ activities must be upheld when you become president – Association of Progressive Muslims to Bawumia

The Association of Progressive Muslims has urged Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia to uphold his stance against LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana.

In a press release dated April 11, 2024, the Association commended Dr. Bawumia for publicly declaring his opposition to homosexuality.

However, they emphasized the importance of ensuring concrete actions, urging him to persuade President Akufo-Addo to sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law.

“Good news for mother Ghana and we’re so glad Alhaji Bawumia has listen to our call finally. However, we expect him to in the coming days, ensure that his boss, President Akufo-Addo signs the Anti- LGBTQ Bill for this matter to be brought to finality. Without that, we’ll assume it is the usual political antics to deceive Ghanaians, like in the case of his promise to build Cape Coast a harbour, like his claim of shifting the focus of the economic management policy from taxation to production which, turned out to be the shifting of the focus of economic management policy from production to more taxation.” the release signed by President of the Association, Umar Harris stated.

Dr. Bawumia reiterated his stance during Eid Al Fitr celebrations in Kumasi, aligning his opposition with his religious beliefs and Ghanaian cultural norms. However, the Association urged him to translate his words into tangible actions by advocating for the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill’s passage.

“It is important to note our cultural, societal and norms as well as values as Ghanaians frown on the same sex marriage. Further, as a Muslim my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. My faith is strictly against the practice of LGBTQ+, No ifs, no buts. Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion and indeed all major religions in Ghana as well as our societal norms and values clearly forbid. All major religious are opposed to the practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as president,” he said.

“Ghanaians have leant many bitter lessons from Dr. Bawumia and Nana Addo, and won’t fall for any of his political gymnastics again. This is the same man who inspired hope into the poor that Mobile Money will not be taxed so Ghanaians should accept it to save his government from going to the IMF, what happened in the end? Mobile money tax was introduced and yet proceeded to the IMF.

“Ghanaians expect action and not his usual rhetoric. The only way to prove his commitment on the LGBTQ is to persuade his boss, President Akufo-Addo to sign the Anti- LGBTQ Bill as soon as possible,” the release concluded.

NAPO has not been endorsed as Bawumia’s running mate – Ashanti NPP youth organisers

The Ashanti youth organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have moved to dispel rumors surrounding their alleged endorsement of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as a potential running mate for the party.

In a statement, they clarified that the claims do not accurately reflect the sentiments of the majority of youth organisers in the Ashanti Region.

They emphasized adherence to democratic processes within the NPP, highlighting Article 12 (b) of the party’s Constitution, which vests the selection of the vice-presidential candidate in the presidential candidate, in consultation with the National Council.

Asserting their commitment to democratic principles, the organisers emphasized that it is not within their mandate to exert undue influence on such decisions.

They stressed the importance of considering qualities such as humility, respect, national appeal, and widespread popularity in selecting a vice-presidential candidate to ensure maximum support from party members and the Ghanaian populace.

The press statement, signed by various youth organisers, emphasized unity and collective support for the party’s leadership as they deliberate on selecting a suitable vice-presidential candidate.

They urged party members to uphold democratic values and prepare for the upcoming elections with unity and solidarity.

  • Bawumia will succeed me by Allah’s grace – Akufo-Addo

Bawumia will succeed me by Allah’s grace – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s commitment to advancing the development of zongo communities should he win the upcoming presidential elections.

Akufo-Addo emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s potential to serve as an inclusive leader during this year’s Eid celebrations at the Black Star Square in Accra on April 11.

Highlighting his administration’s achievements in zongo community development, President Akufo-Addo spoke optimistically about Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, stating, “Fortunately, the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, is the elected flagbearer of my party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), indeed, the first of the Muslim faith to occupy that important position, and is in pole position, by the grace and benediction of Almighty Allah, to take over from me on 7th January 2025, Insha Allah.

Affirming his belief in Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to zongo community advancement, Akufo-Addo reiterated his own commitment to inclusivity in leadership. He urged the audience to uphold this principle for the equitable development of the nation.

“As a Muslim, I have no doubt that he will continue to work with you to enhance the benefits of the Fund for the development of Zongo communities. I have no doubt that I have been an inclusive President. I plead with you to uphold this principle of inclusivity for the equitable development of our country.”

Below is the president’s full address…

Address By The President Of The Republic,Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, At The Eid Ul-Fitr Celebration, On Thursday, 11th April 2024, At Black Star Square, Accra

Vice President, Second Lady, Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate, National Chief Imam, Ulama, Members of the National Council of Zongo Chiefs, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Jama, Fellow Ghanaians,

I salute you with the greetings of Islam, Salam Alaikum!

I must, at the outset, give thanks to the Almighty Allah for guiding the Muslim Ummah not only in Ghana, but also throughout the world, to observe the third pillar of Islam, fasting in the month of Ramadan, and to have ended it successfully. I continue to thank Almighty God for the life of our National Chief Imam and all the leaders of the Muslim Ummah in Ghana. Together with the National Chief Imam, the Ulama have provided me and my Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with the needed counsel that has enabled us run the affairs of this country peacefully for the past seven years and more. We are very grateful.

This is the last Eid ul-Fitr celebration that I shall attend as President of the Republic, having served, by the grace of the Almighty and through the generosity of the Ghanaian people, the constitutionally mandated period of two (2) terms of four (4) years each. It is, thus, important that I identify the core leadership of the Ummah, whose guidance to the flock has helped maintain the peace, stability and tranquility that we continue to enjoy in this country: Shaykh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Shaykh Kamaldeen Abubakar, Imam of the Shia Community, and Al-Hajj Ibrahim Umar, Imam of the Ahl-Sunna Community. I shall always remain indebted to you for your high sense of patriotism and commitment to Ghana, and to the wellbeing of the Muslim faithful. May Allah continue to imbue you with the wisdom to provide leadership and service to our country.

Chief Imam, Ulama, I came to you in the course of the 2016 electioneering campaign with a promise to make the challenges and concerns of Zongo communities an integral part of the governance process under my leadership. Seven years down the line, I can say, with some measure of satisfaction, that the promise has been fulfilled. Today, many Zongo communities around the country bear witness to the impacts that projects undertaken under the Zongo Development Fund are having in the lives of their inhabitants.

From the construction of school infrastructure, to the provision of computer laboratories, to the enhancement of sanitary facilities, to the development of astroturf football pitches, we have uplifted the lives of thousands, if not millions, of people living in Zongo communities. It was my hope that residents of Zongos will own the Fund, and leverage the support of government for attracting external support for the Fund, rather than it becoming a wholly government funded initiative. I am urging you to show a heightened sense of interest in the development of the Fund, so that we can grow it for successive generations of Zongo people.

Fortunately, the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, is the elected flagbearer of my party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), indeed, the first of the Muslim faith to occupy that important position, and is in poll position, by the grace and benediction of Almighty Allah, to take over from me on 7th January 2025, Insha Allah. As a Muslim, I have no doubt that he will continue to work with you to enhance the benefits of the Fund for the development of Zongo communities. I have no doubt that I have been an inclusive President. I plead with you to uphold this principle of inclusivity for the equitable development of our country.

Chief Imam, Ulama, the importance of Ramadan is not lost on the average Muslim. Ramadan seeks to inculcate, in the Muslim adherent, the spirit of sacrifice, fellow-feeling, commitment to ethical living, love of family and nation and, above all, God-consciousness. I urge you not to abandon these values after the passage of the month of Ramadan. Indeed, the purpose of Ramadan is to instill these values in us and for us to keep them all our lives. These are the exact same values that every nation needs in order to develop. No Muslim has been unable to fast in this month of Ramadan, because they did not have what it takes either to eat the dawn meal or break their fast during iftar, thanks to the time-tested practice of communal sharing of meals at dawn and in the evenings. Let us make this spirit of togetherness a national value. That will give true meaning to the principle of “one nation, one destiny.”

The Qur’an states, “O Mankind, we have created you from a male and female and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another…” (Q:49:13).  Let us, therefore, eschew all forms of divisiveness that have the potential of destroying the unity and cohesion of our country. I make this point also, particularly, because we are in an election year. In an election year, there is the tendency for self-seeking people to exploit our differences of religion and ethnicity to foment division, in order to promote a narrow, parochial, sectarian and political agenda. In an age of technology and new media, which also offers people with a wide degree of anonymity, we should be careful about the spread of mis-information and dis-information, especially if such mis-information and dis-information destroy the hard-earned reputation of people. The Qur’an in Chapter 49 verse 6, states, “O you who believe, when an evil person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful of what you have done.”

Muslims, fellow Ghanaians, I call on you to heed the words of Allah and be very careful so you do not destroy people’s reputation on the altar of political expediency. Indeed, the Qur’an likens backbiting and mudslinging to eating the flesh of a dead brother or sister. In verse 12 of Qur’an chapter 49, it poses the rhetorical question, “Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?” Let us, thus, remember that this country is more important than our personal egos and interests.

Chief Imam, Ulama, Jama’a, I have never retreated from my belief that education is our sure way out of poverty, disease and ignorance. Whilst my government does its part to ensure the development of the human capital in Zongo communities, I appeal to you to ponder on the first set of verses of the Qur’an to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Allayhi Wa’Salam). “Read! In the name of your Lord who created…who taught man by the pen. Taught man what he did not know” (Q: 96:1-5). In addition to the free senior high school programme, and the educational interventions by the Zongo Development Fund, I recently launched the Ghana Smart Schools Project, which will provide some 1.3 million tablets to students in senior high schools, that is One-Student-One-Tablet. All of these initiatives can only be meaningful if we take a keen interest in the education of our children. Certainly, let us give them the standard Makaranta training. But, by all means, let us ensure that they learn enough of the secular sciences to ensure that they become key players and well-rounded individuals in the development of the country.

Ghana continues to be the envy of the world on account of the religious harmony that we foster among adherents of different religions in a secular state, which advocates religious freedom. I pray you to continue to promote religious harmony and co-existence. It is the essence of Islam, which means peace and submission to the will of Allah. I wish you a blissful celebration. Let us celebrate in moderation, so we can emerge from the celebrations in one piece to continue with nation-building.

I wish all Muslims and Ghanaians a happy Eid ul-Fitr, and may God bless us all, and our homeland Ghana, and make her great and strong.

    Eid Mubarak!

    Barika da Sallah!

    Salam Alaikum!

Ensure Akufo-Addo signs anti- LGBTQ+ Bill into law – Association of Progressive Muslims tells Bawumia

Amidst ongoing debates surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, the Association of Progressive Muslims has issued a directive to Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him to advocate for the enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law.

The association has urged Bawumia to ensure President Akufo-Addo puts his signature on the legislation to make it a law.

They have also urged the Vice President to uphold his stance against LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana.

  • I won’t get in the way of anti-corruption efforts if elected president – Mahama

I won’t get in the way of anti-corruption efforts if elected president – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a resolute declaration that if elected president in the forthcoming December polls, he will not shield his appointees involved in corrupt practices.

During a dialogue with members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of demanding accountability from leaders for the taxes paid by citizens.

He outlined his plans to establish an independent valuation office aimed at preventing sole sourcing and procurement irregularities.

Addressing concerns about the misuse of taxpayers’ money, Mr. Mahama stated, “One of the reasons why you are suffering in terms of imposition of revenue and taxes is because of the expenditure side. If the government is raising the money and misusing it through sole sourcing, procurement and so forth, it is your taxpayers’ money that is being wasted and so we must take an interest in that and that is why I have suggested that we are going to have an independent valuation office and any sole sourcing contract must go for value-for-money audit to make sure that it has not been inflated.”

Additionally, Mr. Mahama underscored the necessity of combating corruption and empowering anti-corruption institutions to function effectively.

He pledged not to interfere if investigations by institutions like EOCO or OSP reveal misconduct among his ministers.

Mr. Mahama emphasized his commitment to holding his administration accountable and ensuring that those found guilty of wrongdoing are held responsible, signaling a firm stance against corruption within his government if elected.

“Aside from that, we must make sure that we cut down on corruption and allow the anti-corruption institutions to work.

“If people have taken advantage of the country, they must be dealt with, and that is why I said when I come into the office and I am swearing in the ministers, I will caution them, and if they don’t listen and do not do their work well and EOCO or OSP come after you, I am not a clearing agent and I won’t interfere and I will let them do their work,” Mr Mahama said.

Proposed transport fares are yet to receive official approval – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have cautioned commuters against adhering to any proposed new transport fares that have not yet received official approval.

This advisory follows the announcement by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana of a 30 percent increase in transport fares effective April 13, 2024.

In a joint press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC explained that the decision to raise fares stemmed from the government’s failure to address their concerns.

However, they emphasized that any fare adjustment outside the parameters set by the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country would be considered illegal and should be disregarded.

Furthermore, both organizations highlighted their ongoing efforts to engage with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to thoroughly evaluate the various cost components and reach a mutually agreeable resolution on the matter.

“We are by this statement, urging the Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Station Welfare committees to ensure compliance to the existing fares as no such decision has been taken regarding any fare increment.

“We also want to urge all drivers to abide by this directive and have confidence in the leadership. We will continue to push for the welfare of transport operators.”

    Below is the full statement

PURPORTED INCREASE IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARES

It has come to our attention that some sections of Drivers have arbitrarily increased transport fares in contravention of the Administrative Instrument on the review of public transport fares in the country.

This action is illegal and must be stopped immediately if this is true.

As leadership, we have followed with keen interest, the recent adjustment in the fuel prices and other related operational cost. We are currently engaging stakeholders to give consideration to the various cost components and agree on the way forward.

As has been the practice, the leadership met with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday 10th April, 2024 to present our demands.

Once consensus is reached, the general public will be duly informed. Therefore any increase outside the Administrative Instrument, should be disregarded and treated with contempt. We therefore urge commuters not to pay any fare outside the existing fares.

We are by this statement, urging the Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Station Welfare committees to ensure compliance to the existing fares as no such decision has been taken regarding any fare increment.

We also want to urge all drivers to abide by this directive and have confidence in the leadership. We will continue to push for the welfare of transport operators. IJ

I left for UK to become a soldier because most Ghanaian leaders, pastors, chiefs are liars – Man

A Ghanaian man, whose journey led him to the British Army due to height restrictions in his homeland’s military, has offered insights into Ghana’s current state and the obstacles confronting its youth.

In a widely circulated video, known as Achieve Doctor, revealed his aspirations to serve his country from a young age but found himself stationed in the United Kingdom (UK) as a soldier.

Achieve Doctor questioned why he would forsake his homeland when it possesses all the resources to thrive.

He lamented the current state of Ghana, attributing it to widespread corruption and dishonesty among its leaders, including pastors, chiefs, and politicians.

Highlighting the plight of Ghanaian youth, he underscored the scarcity of opportunities, inadequate support systems, and the detrimental impact of corruption.

He noted the trend of Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad, rather than contributing to their homeland’s development.

“Most Ghanaian leaders are untruthful, from pastors, chief and politicians. The youth is suffering, if the leaders are truthful, who am I to travel to the UK to become a soldier. Of course being a soldier is not the best of jobs but  looking back at Ghana this is the best,

Despite acknowledging the challenges of military service, he viewed it as a better option compared to the conditions in Ghana.

Emphasizing the importance of investing in youth, Achieve Doctor called for increased resources and opportunities, particularly in education, job creation, and mentorship programs.

He expressed optimism that with dedication and perseverance, Ghana can overcome its challenges and realize its full potential.

Supply constraints drive cocoa prices higher for fifth consecutive day

Cocoa futures surged for a fifth consecutive day, driven by anticipated tightening supplies in the upcoming months, propelling prices to near record highs.

The primary contract in New York experienced a significant uptick of up to 2.9%, mirroring a similar upward trend in London.

Concerns over dry weather conditions in West Africa pose a threat to the ongoing mid-crop harvest, as highlighted by The Hightower Report.

A global cocoa shortage has propelled futures to surpass $10,000 per ton, more than doubling since the beginning of the year, and reaching a historic peak earlier this month.

The substantial surge is starting to exert pressure on certain traders, albeit encouraging growers to re-enter the market.

Ghana, a leading cocoa producer, has initiated discussions with traders to defer deliveries due to bean shortages, as informed by sources familiar with the negotiations.

Challenges in meeting contractual obligations have plagued Ghana in recent seasons due to diminished output, necessitating the rollover of deliveries and exacerbating strains on the global market.

Similarly, Ivory Coast has appealed to buyers to postpone purchases until the mid-crop period to alleviate the scarcity pressure.

Give us a date we can present anti-LGBTQ bill for consideration – Parliament tells presidency

Parliament has formally made a request to the Office of the President for a specific date regarding the transmission of the Human Sexual and Family Values Bill for presidential assent.

This action follows a directive from Nana Bediatuo Asante, the secretary to President Akufo-Addo, on March 18, urging Parliament to withhold the presentation of the bill, also referred to as the anti-LGBT+ bill, to the President.

Asante’s request was issued pending the resolution of pertinent matters currently under consideration by the Supreme Court.

Acknowledging the President’s office’s request to pause the bill’s progression, Cyril K. O. Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament, communicated in a letter dated April 10, 2024.

However, Mr Nsiah also requested the President’s office to specify a suitable day for Parliament to present the Human Sexual and Family Value Bill, 2024, to the President for his deliberation.

“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your office on when to present the Human Sexual and Family Value Bill, 2024 to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992” the letter read.

NPP’s Kenneth Adjei Kuranchie goes independent

The Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Kenneth Adjei Kuranchie, has announced his candidacy for the parliamentary seat in the Okaikwei North Constituency as an independent contender.

During an interview on the Angel Morning Show on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Mr Kuranchie expressed his disillusionment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing the party’s failure to recognize his longstanding residency and deep understanding of the constituency’s issues.

He criticized the NPP’s decision to appoint an outsider, Nana Ama Dokua, to lead the constituency instead of acknowledging a local candidate like himself who is intimately familiar with the area.

Mr Kuranchie, a veteran journalist, stressed the significance of investing in human capital within the constituency while lamenting the lack of substantial efforts to improve living conditions over the years.

“I’ve not seen any extraneous hard effort to improve the conditions of the people in terms of education, health after 38 years of living in my constituency,” Kuranchie remarked.

After three unsuccessful attempts to secure the NPP’s parliamentary candidacy, Kuranchie acknowledged his past setbacks.

As Ghana prepares for the December 2024 elections, Nana Ama Dokua currently represents the NPP as the parliamentary candidate for the Okaikwei North Constituency.

Resigning from NPP has brought me joy – Solomon Owusu

A former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Solomon Owusu, has expressed his joy in abandoning the ruling party to join Alan Kyeremanten’s Movement For Change, considering it a significant positive step in his political journey.

Describing the day he officially left the NPP as the happiest in his life, he shared his sentiments during an interview with Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah on Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

As a Communications Team member of the Movement For Change, Owusu vividly recalled his departure from the NPP on September 25, 2023, at 2:30 pm, noting it as a momentous occasion akin to the joy of his birth.

He likened his departure to gaining freedom from slavery, emphasizing his newfound enlightenment since leaving the NPP.

Reflecting on his experience, Owusu expressed that sometimes individuals remain in a party merely to honor familial ties, but his departure marked a conscious decision to break free from what he perceived as a cycle of conformity.

He asserted that the NPP had become synonymous with the Nana Addo People’s Party, prompting his departure.

“It is like saying this is the time to come out of a slavery you have been placed under. Sometimes you are in a party just to appease your parents for bringing you up in it, but they were the same people who sent you to school to gain knowledge and see the light, hence in September I decided to part ways with the party. It is the Nana Addo People’s Party and not the New Patriotic Party, so I have left the party. After I left the party, I have seen happiness,” he explained.

  • Mahama can make free SHS excel – Apaak

Mahama can make free SHS excel – Apaak

Member of Parliament for Builsa South and Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has urged Ghanaians to disregard Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s outdated assertions regarding the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy.

In a recent statement, Dr. Apaak emphasized that the FSHS initiative will continue to progress under John Mahama’s presidency, as he plans to collaborate with stakeholders to address any existing challenges.

Dr. Apaak criticized Dr. Bawumia and his associates for diverting attention from substantive issues to propagate baseless claims about Mr. Mahama’s intentions towards FSHS, which he deems unfounded and irrational.

He further highlighted discrepancies in Dr. Bawumia’s stance, pointing out that while the Vice President acknowledged the need for a review of the FSHS program to the IMF, he continues to mislead the Ghanaian public by insinuating that any review equates to cancellation.

Dr. Apaak underlined Mr. Mahama’s recent engagement with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), where he actively listened to concerns and pledged to work towards resolving them if elected.

This demonstrates Mr. Mahama’s commitment to enhancing the FSHS policy, contrary to allegations of its abolishment.

In addition, Dr. Apaak reiterated Mr. Mahama’s proposed measures to improve the FSHS program, such as decentralizing feeding arrangements and addressing infrastructure deficits in secondary schools.

Overall, Dr. Apaak affirmed his confidence in Mr. Mahama’s ability to strengthen and enhance the FSHS initiative through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, contrasting with what he perceives as misleading narratives from Dr. Bawumia’s camp.

    READ THE FULL STATEMENT BELOW

STATEMENT: IGNORE THE STALE LIE – FSHS WILL THRIVE UNDER JDM
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

For the information of DMB and his camp, JDM held a very successful meeting with the leadership of CHASS on how to address the challenges affecting teaching and learning in our secondary schools on April 8th, 2024.

Why would JDM waste precious time by engaging the heads of our secondary schools to discuss how to resolve challenges bedevilling the implementation of the FSHS policy if he intends to cancel FSHS?

At the meeting, JDM listened to the long list of challenges narrated by the heads of our secondary schools and promised to work with them to address their raised concerns when he gets the nod. He restated his intention to convene a national stakeholders forum to deliberate on the FSHS Programme as a first step towards reviewing it to make it better.

JDM’s position on the decentralisation of the feeding arrangements in our secondary school system to ensure that feeding grants go directly to schools to procure food for students, was welcomed.

Equally, his promise to end the obnoxious double track system by completing uncompleted structures and adding new ones, to increase educational infrastructure also received commendation.

If DMB is honest and worth his salt, he should tell Ghanaians that the current government he is a part of told the IMF that the FSHS Programme will be reviewed and rationalised.

The duplicity of DMB is affirmed by the fact that he, the vice President, was captured in the said report, dated January 2024, as the highest government official who represented government during the review meeting with the IMF. Why was he comfortable telling the IMF the truth but continues deceiving Ghanaians, that review means cancel?

DMB should be bold enough to tell Ghanaians, that JDM was right in calling for a review of the FSHS Programme just as he represented government to admit to the IMF, as captured, on page 76 paragraph 47 of the first review of the IMF program.

Instead of DMB and his camp focusing on how to rescue their flopped campaign, they are busy pushing the stale and impotent lie, that JDM will collapse FSHS. No reasonable Ghanaian believes the nonsensical claim that JDM will cancel FSHS.

FSHS will thrive and blossom under JDM as President because he will work with stakeholders to fix the challenges.

  • Sustained growth could have made African families 35% more wealthier – World Bank

Sustained growth could have made African families 35% more wealthier – World Bank

The Chief Economist for the Africa Region at the World Bank, Andrew Dabalen, has emphasized the potential wealth increase of African families by 35% if growth had been sustained over the past 14 years.

These insights were shared during discussions on the World Bank’s Africa Pulse Report for April 2024.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi TV’s Point of View program, Mr Dabalen noted the challenges of maintaining growth rates in Africa over an extended period, despite lower growth rates compared to other regions.

He highlighted that Africa’s ability to reduce poverty through growth is only half of the global average and pointed out differences in economic recovery durations between Africa and East Asia.

Mr Dabalen drew comparisons with East Asia, noting that economic recovery in Africa tends to be short-lived, whereas in East Asia, it persists for a longer duration before faltering.

This observation underscores the economic resilience and sustainability disparities between the two regions.

He concluded by noting that Africa’s growth rate reduces poverty at a slower pace compared to other regions, particularly East Asia, which experiences much higher poverty reduction rates.

“Africa’s growth has been traditionally low compared to other regions being in the same situation as Africa, such as East Asia for instance. And it has been very difficult to sustain over a long period of time. Countries in Asia and Africa went through a recession, there’s an economic downturn we have had the experience.

“Let’s say there’s a recovery, the recovery in Africa lasts maybe three years and then a shock comes, and it falters. It doesn’t sustain. Recovery in East Asia takes about eight years before it falters, that is a huge difference.

He added, “Not only do you find Africa’s growth is lower, but you also find it is not sustained over a long period. And because of that, it’s extremely costly. If Africa’s growth was sustained at the rate at which it grew, it’s not high, but even if it was sustained between 2002 and 2014, that window of 14 years, African families would be 35% richer than they are now. That is the kind of things that give you a sense of how completely costly this low growth has been.

“The speed at which Africa’s growth reduces poverty is only half of what we see in the rest of the world. East Asia is much higher.”

  • Africa’s growth rebounds to 3.4% in 2024 – World Bank

Africa’s growth rebounds to 3.4% in 2024 – World Bank

Chief Economist for the Africa Region at the World Bank, Andrew Dabalen, has expressed optimism regarding the projected 3.8% growth in Sub-Saharan African countries by 2025.

The World Bank’s Africa Pulse Report for April 2024 forecasts growth in Africa in the forthcoming years. It suggests that domestic resource mobilization and international support can alleviate funding constraints in the region, while investments in human capital and local service delivery capacity can empower individuals to capitalize on market opportunities.

During an interview on Citi TV’s The Point of View, Dabalen acknowledges Africa’s lower per capita growth over the past decade but views the 2024 rebound of 3.4% as a positive development compared to the previous three to four years.

Mr Dabalen emphasized that this rebound is positive news, especially considering Africa’s growth being less than or around 1% in per capita terms over the last decade.

He attributes the growth recovery in parts of Africa to various reforms implemented by governments to reduce inflation and interest rates, primarily driving the recovery in private consumption.

“All those years what we have seen is a lot of hardships, for the first time in four years, we’re beginning to see a rebound of the economic activity. Last year [2023] we estimated growth to be 2.6% in Africa. On average, we can talk about specific regions that have outperformed and others that have not. This year rebounded to 3.4% and we have forecasted that in 2025, it will be about 3.8%.

“What we’re saying is that this is a good development, it’s positive. We can talk about the link between inequality, in general view this accounts for population which is not completely unusual. In the last decade, Africa’s growth has been less than or around 1% in per capita terms. This will be a ball in the park. It’s positive news compared to the last three, or four years. That is important to acknowledge.”

“It’s primarily driven by a recovery in private consumptions because inflation has come down substantially in a lot of these countries. Because of normalization of the global supply chain, steady decline commodity prices, the impact of reforms that these countries have done in order to bring inflation, interest rates down, so those are the drivers,” he said.

Performance Tracker vital for enhancing transparency and accountability in government – Kennedy Osei Nyarko

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru Constituency, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has emphasized that the government’s performance tracker will enhance transparency and accountability within the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Designed to ensure transparency and accountability in infrastructure project execution nationwide, the platform has been deemed by Nyarko as factual, credible, and accurate. It serves as a dependable tool for showcasing project progress and impact, fostering trust and confidence among citizens.

Nyarko asserts the tracker’s capability to combat misinformation, especially in the lead-up to the December 7, 2024 general elections.

He urged the public to explore the tracker’s website and app to become well-informed, stressing individual responsibility in consuming information.

Moreover, Mr Nyarko highlights the importance of using the tracker to prevent the dissemination of false images representing official initiatives.

The government launched the performance tracker, detailing all government projects, progress updates, and locations since assuming power, at the GIMPA campus on April 10, 2024.

Millions of cedis saved through Ghana’s digitalization drive – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has highlighted the significant cost-saving impact of digitalization in Ghana, citing examples such as the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Service Secretariat.

He revealed that SSNIT saved GH¢480 million by eliminating 29,000 ghost pensioners, while the National Service Secretariat eradicated 44,000 ghost workers, resulting in savings of over GH¢356 million.

Speaking at the launch of LEADing Justice in Accra, Vice President Bawumia expressed enthusiasm for the Chief Justice’s emphasis on digitization within the judiciary, acknowledging Ghana’s progress in this area.

“It is my hope that today’s event will herald a new dawn in the history of our judicial system propelled by efficiency, excellence, knowledge, and integrity.”

He commended the Chief Justice for bringing renewed focus and energy to the judiciary since taking office.

Bawumia emphasized the transformative power of digitalization, citing the dramatic increase in the proportion of individuals with Tax Identification Numbers after the introduction of the Ghana Card as an example.

He also highlighted the effectiveness of digital tools in combating corruption, such as the elimination of ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General Office.

The Vice President stressed the importance of law, ethics, asset management, due process, and digitization as pillars of the judiciary’s image and advancement.

“When we digitalized and gave everyone a Ghana Card and made the decision to make the Ghana Card Tax Identification number, we increased the proportion of individuals with Tax ID, the number moved from four per cent to 85 per cent just like that.

“We have also seen through digitalization that you can deal with corruption. We have eliminated ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General Office just by using the Ghana Cards because the ghosts don’t have fingerprints.”

He lauded the positive impact of e-systems in improving the administration of justice, citing his personal involvement in launching a case tracking system in 2018.

Bawumia called on all Ghanaians to support the Chief Justice’s vision for the judiciary, emphasizing the government’s commitment to investing in court infrastructure, residential accommodation for judges, and human resource development to enhance justice delivery.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, praised the Chief Justice’s innovative approach in launching her vision for justice delivery, describing it as bold and transformative.

More than 700 Ghanaian products now part of AfCFTA’s guided trade initiative – Akufo-Addo

During the State visit of President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significant progress of Ghanaian products under the Guided Trade Initiative of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

President Akufo-Addo noted that since the launch of the Guided Trade Initiative in October 2022, over 700 self-defined AfCFTA products from Ghana, including cosmetics, processed foods, coconut oil, Shea butter, and garments, have been introduced and targeted for the AfCFTA market.

He cited Ghana’s successful penetration of the East African market, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania, as evidence of the initiative’s effectiveness.

GHS500k has been offered by some NPP chairmen to make NAPO vice president hopeful – Chairman Aluta alleges

The chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Juaben constituency, Alex Sarfo Kantanka, has raised allegations suggesting that Ashanti regional constituency chairpersons are facing pressure to endorse Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), as the running mate for Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Kantanka revealed that he was contacted by Fiifi Mensah, the chairman of Bantama constituency, who urged him to sign a petition in support of NAPO as the potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia.

Expressing his reservations, Kantanka emphasized that decisions of such importance should not be swayed by financial incentives or endorsements from party officials.

During an interview on Okay FM on April 9, 2024, Kantanka disclosed that he had been invited to sign the petition alongside other constituency chairpersons but opted not to participate in the process.

When questioned by the host regarding rumors of monetary inducements, Chairman Aluta confirmed the existence of such pressure, recounting his own experience of being approached by Chairman Fiifi to endorse NAPO.

He highlighted the importance of selecting a running mate based on merit and suitability rather than monetary influences.

Chairman Aluta further expressed concern over the notion of party chairpersons being involved in endorsing a candidate for the vice presidency, emphasizing the need for transparent and merit-based selection processes within the party.

He concluded by condemning the idea of the vice presidential slot being allocated to the highest bidder, stressing the importance of upholding the integrity and principles of the party.

“He mentioned that the letter was with Joe Carl, the chairman of Nhyiaeso. I agreed to come and sign. On my way to the location, the Kumawu chairman called me to inquire if I had been contacted. I confirmed, but I pretended not to understand the nature of the conversation.”

“He also mentioned that Fiifi had called him to come and sign. I felt distressed, so I decided not to go, and he did the same.

“The party shouldn’t be run based on who can pay money.

“Since I became chairman, I have never encountered a situation where chairmen are supposed to endorse a candidate for the vice presidency as a running mate. Never in my life as an NPP member have I seen such a scenario where the selection of a running mate should be based on the endorsement of party chairmen.

“So, what is going on? It confirms what people are saying. The running mate slot is being given to the highest bidder,” he added.

Reports surfaced following the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal drugs at Brussels Airport in Belgium, indicating that the cocaine was transported through KIA aboard Royal Air Maroc, the Moroccan national carrier, with alleged assistance from a GACL staff member on March 23, 2024.

A Dutch national, Proeger Delgey Bianca, was apprehended at Brussels Airport with 8.5 kilograms of suspected cocaine, purportedly transported through KIA on the mentioned date.

In an official statement dated April 10, GACL confirmed the commencement of investigations and the interdiction of implicated staff members.

The management of GACL reiterated its stern warning to staff regarding aiding passengers at the airport, stressing that failure to comply would result in punitive actions, including summary dismissals and legal prosecutions.

“failing which punitive measures not limited to but including summary dismissals and prosecutions by the State will be effected in line with existing protocols.”

GACL management reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to collaborate with stakeholders to maintain safety and security at the airport.

Management wishes to assure the general public of its commitment and determination, in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that operations at the airport are safe and secure.

Performance tracker is not for NPP but Ghana – Miracles Aboagye

The Communications Officer of the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has underscored that the newly launched Performance Tracker isn’t partisan but a state resource intended for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

He clarified that unlike the Green Book used by the previous NDC government as a political tool, the Performance Tracker is a resource meant for successive administrations.

During the website launch on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Works and Housing, emphasized the tracker’s role in providing accurate presentations of infrastructure projects, moving beyond artist’s impressions.

In an interview on Asempa FM, Miracle Aboagye highlighted that the Performance Tracker, available as a website (www.performancetracker.com) and mobile app, was initiated as a project from the vice president’s office, serving as a lasting resource for Ghanaians, not just the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He stressed that the tracker addresses concerns about project presentation accuracy, particularly the use of artist’s impressions.

“The NDC government brought a Green Book. Clearly when you pick that you will know that it is a political tool. This [reference to the performance tracker] is not a Blue Book, this is a government of Ghana project. It is a state asset.

“That is why it wasn’t the NPP national executives who did the launch, it was ministers of state and staff from the Office of the Vice President that drove the project till it was launched. It was a pet project that was developed by the office of the vice president to be able to hold this. So, it is a state asset beyond the Nana Akufo-Addo government,” he stated.

Electricity increased over 17% under Mahama – IES

A Research and Policy Analyst at the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Xatse Derick Emmanuel, has highlighted that historical data indicates former President John Dramani Mahama contributed more to Ghana’s national electricity supply than President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

During Mahama’s tenure, Emmanuel noted, access to electricity surged by over 17 percent, soaring from 60.5 percent in 2008 to 83.24 percent in 2016.

This indicates an annual increase of nearly 3 percent under Mahama’s governance.

Conversely, Emmanuel pointed out that the Akufo-Addo administration managed to augment access to electricity by less than 6 percent, ascending from 83.24 percent in 2016 to 88.84 percent by February 2024. This signifies an annual increase of less than 1 percent.

“When Nana Addo took over from 2017, access to national electricity rose from 83.24% (2016) to 88.84 as at February 2024. Meaning they have added 5.61% in 7 years making 0.8% increase per year.

“Meanwhile, under JM, the NDC took it from 60.5% in 2008 to 83.24% in 2016, an average of 2.8% annual increase by the NDC,” he wrote in a statement.

He added, “Realistically, if we grow at an average 0.8% by Nana Addo, Ghana will achieve universal access to electricity in 14 years (2038).”

Meanwhile, Ghana has recently grappled with intermittent power outages, colloquially termed ‘dumsor’. Nonetheless, the Electricity Company of Ghana has rebutted these assertions.

  • I will scrap 22 levies, fees imposed by NPP at ports – Mahama

I will scrap 22 levies, fees imposed by NPP at ports – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to abolish several levies imposed on the clearing of goods at the ports, expressing astonishment at the existence of 22 levies and fees in this regard.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) highlighted some of these levies, including the Special Import Levy, Ghana Export/Import Bank levy, Ghana Education Trust Fund, Ghana Education Trust Fund Network Charge, African Union Import e-Levy, and Covid Health Recovery levy.

Mahama also urged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to promptly fulfill his promise of scrapping the E-levy and other taxes, emphasizing that Dr. Bawumia should initiate the process without delay, given his pivotal role in the current government.

Dr. Bawumia had previously vowed to eliminate the controversial E-Levy to facilitate Ghana’s transition to a cashless economy, affirming that there would be no taxes on digital payments under his administration.

Moreover, the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer had pledged to eradicate other taxes, including VAT on electricity, emissions tax, and betting tax.

“To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will therefore be abolished,” Dr Bawumia announced.

However, during an address to members of GUTA on Tuesday, April 9, Mr. Mahama cautioned against blindly trusting these assurances.

He urged GUTA to hold Dr. Bawumia accountable and to insist on the immediate elimination of certain nuisance taxes introduced by the current government.

PFJ a political tactic employed to deceive Ghanaians – Edem Agbana

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has lambasted the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative, dismissing it as a hollow political catchphrase devoid of tangible outcomes.

The PFJ, touted as a flagship program of the NPP government, was introduced with the aim of catalyzing agricultural transformation and fostering job creation.

Launched in 2017, the PFJ encompassed various elements such as subsidized inputs, enhanced extension services, marketing assistance, infrastructural development, investment in farmers’ organizations, and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies.

The overarching goal of the policy was to engender sustainable employment opportunities for the citizens of Ghana.

However, according to the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, the PFJ was nothing more than a rhetorical device used for political expediency.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Agbana asserted, “PFJ was nothing but a political slogan with no real-time solutions.”

“I have been farming for years now. The PFJ produced no results. And I am ready to debate this anywhere anytime. It was a political slogan meant to deceive the people.”

EC must thoroughly be investigated over missing laptops – NDC to govt

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for an independent inquiry into the Electoral Commission (EC) following allegations of missing laptops from the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

Contrary to the assertions made by the opposition NDC, the EC clarified on March 20 that none of its Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) were missing.

The EC disclosed that only five laptops were stolen from its custody.

The deputy chair in Charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, appealed for calm and assured the public that the theft of the laptops would not compromise the integrity of the 2024 elections.

However, during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, accused the EC of evasiveness regarding the matter.

He alleged that the EC was constantly shifting its stance whenever questioned about the missing devices.

“…They continue shifting goalposts. You push them they go this way; you push them they go this way. This has strengthened our position that this EC should be thoroughly investigated by an outside body. Because a lot of things are not going on well there,” he stated.

  • Mining exploration in Atwima Nwabiagya threatens safety of 400 acres of cocoa farms

Mining exploration in Atwima Nwabiagya threatens safety of 400 acres of cocoa farms

In the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, the livelihoods of cocoa farmers are under imminent threat as a foreign-owned gold mining firm, MIGOP Mining Limited, conducts exploration activities.

This poses a significant risk to over 400 acres of cocoa farms, spanning five cocoa-growing communities in the area.

These farms, which have recently undergone rehabilitation by the Ghana Cocoa Board to combat the Cocoa Swollen Shot Virus Disease outbreak, are now facing destruction due to the encroachment of the mining firm.

The affected communities, including Apuoyem, Brahebebome, Brosanko, Ouagadougou, and Nkotonmire, stand to suffer considerable economic losses.

According to Ghana COCOBOD, the monetary value of cocoa produced by these communities exceeds GH¢316,000, highlighting the significant impact of the mining activities on the local economy.

Expressing concern over the situation, Head of the anti-illegal mining Units at COCOBOD, Professor Michael Kwarteng, condemned the actions of MIGOP Mining Limited.

“Yesterday I received a call from the executive director of the cocoa health and extension division that there is this mining company, MIGOP Mining Limited. They’ve come to this our cocoa district. To them, they’ve been given license to do prospecting and they’ve destroyed a lot of our cocoa farms. Farmers have been preventing them but they are using security personnel to intimidate them and then going ahead with their activities. So when I received this I said no, I can’t sit down for even a day.

“Looking at what is happening, the evidence is there. They’ve destroyed some of the cocoa farms. COCOBOD we are not aware of what is going on. I always say whenever you are securing any concession, you have to contact the regulator of that production, being cocoa, or whatever.

“Meanwhile when you go to the minerals commission, the Mining Acts 703 sections 18(1)(2), it tells you that mining companies are supposed to contact bodies that regulate that farm. So they are violating that aspect of their own law. So, mining companies are taking advantage of this and are destroying our farms everywhere,” he stated.

He pointed out instances of cocoa farm destruction and intimidation of farmers by security personnel deployed by the mining company.

In response, MIGOP Mining Limited claims to have obtained permits from the Minerals Commission to conduct exploration in the area.

However, they acknowledge the inadvertent destruction of some cocoa farms during the exploration process.

The Community Relations Officer for MIGOP Mining Limited, Richard Gyasi, assured that affected farmers are being compensated for their losses. He emphasizes that the company is currently in the exploration phase and refutes claims of widespread crop destruction.

Despite these assurances, concerns persist regarding the long-term implications of mining activities on cocoa production and the livelihoods of affected communities.

The clash between mining interests and agricultural sustainability underscores the delicate balance between economic development and environmental conservation.

“We are only doing exploration so we are not destroying any crop. Even though at least one or two crops have been affected we are using the government rate to pay them. For now, we are in the exploration stage, we will now move to the development stage before we start the mining. So, we are not destroying crops as it has been portrayed,” he stated.

You have one week to provide research support grants owed us – GRASAG

The leadership of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has issued a stern one-week ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate disbursement of long-overdue research support grants, colloquially referred to as “bursaries.”

Expressing grave concerns over the prolonged three-year delay in fund allocation, the association emphasized the detrimental effects of this delay on the academic pursuits of numerous graduate students.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Accra on Wednesday, April 10, President of the University of Ghana Chapter for GRASAG, Claudius Angsongna, underscored the urgency of the situation. He warned that failure to address their grievances promptly would inevitably lead to nationwide demonstrations.

Calling on the government to ramp up funding for graduate students and ensure adequate resourcing, Mr Angsongna emphasized the pressing need for immediate action. The association demands a response from the government within one week.

Failure to do so will prompt nationwide demonstrations and further press conferences to amplify their grievances.

“We wish to express our profound dissatisfaction with the persistent delays in the disbursement of research grants by the Scholarship Secretariat. Despite the repeated assurances, the crucial financial assistance required for our research endeavours remains elusive.

“For approximately three years now, GRASAG members have been deprived of any governmental support to conduct research. We implore the director of the Scholarship Secretariat to promptly address the issue to fulfil the obligations of graduate students. Graduate students are neglected, and we’re suffering.

“We call on the government to increase the funding for graduate students and ensure that we’re adequately resourced. We demand a response from the government within a week, in the absence of that, we will organize nationwide demonstrations and further press conferences to highlight our grievances.”

When I was in Abokobi, Dr Nfordjour brain and mind clinic, I destroyed  ACs, I used my hands to break louvers, I was cutting myself. TV3 paid over 60,000 cedis. I don’t know if they have finished paying. When I am aware when I am creating damages. It’s nice,” she added.

According to Jonathan Ayitey, an eyewitness speaking to Adom News, a police officer detained the driver, who operates at the Kasoa lorry station.

The driver, resisting arrest, purportedly slapped the police officer during the altercation.

Cyber Crime Unit should have arrested Serwaa Amihere by now – Maurice Ampaw

Renowned lawyer Maurice Ampaw has called on the Cyber Crime Unit to investigate television presenter, Serwaa Amihere over her recent leaked nude video.

Mr Ampaw contends that Serwaa Amihere should face legal repercussions for allegedly filming herself in the nude, labeling it a breach of cyber laws.

The lawyer expressed bewilderment over the incident, questioning how someone in Serwaa’s position could allow themselves to be recorded in such a compromising manner.

He emphasized the need for accountability, asserting that individuals who engage in such behavior should not evade responsibility.

Mr Ampaw further criticized her public image, accusing her of misrepresenting her success and financial status.

He alleged that she falsely portrays herself as a self-made individual while she implores her  wealth through less honorable means.

“Serwaa Amihere should have been apprehended by the Cyber Crime Unit by now. How could she film herself nude? She should be held accountable for permitting such actions. Despite portraying herself as a motivational speaker, influencer, and brand ambassador, she deceives people into believing she attained wealth through hard work, which is untrue. If she wishes to engage in prostitution, she should do so openly instead of using other pursuits as a guise,” he added.

Last week, a video depicting Serwaa Amihere and Henry Fitz in an intimate setting circulated online, sparking widespread criticism. While many blamed Serwaa for the leaked video, Henry Fitz denied any involvement in its dissemination, countering allegations made by certain media outlets.

The current case before the court involves Serwaa Amihere as the complainant, a media personality residing in Tse Addo, Accra. The accused parties include filmmaker Edem Saviour Ketti and trader Candylove Kwakyewaa Ababio, who reside in Adjiringanor and Achimota Kingsby, respectively. Henry Amponsah, also known as Henry Fitz, is currently at large.

The case stems from incidents in December 2023 when the complainant’s makeup artist received extortion demands for GHC5,000, allegedly in exchange for nude images of Serwaa. Subsequent demands for GHC20,000 were made under threat of posting the images online, leading to the arrest of one of the accused individuals, Edem Saviour Ketti, in April 2024. Investigations revealed his involvement in registering the mobile money account used for extortion.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend Henry Amponsah, aka Henry Fitz, to face legal proceedings.

Stalled medicines at Tema port will soon be resolved – Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health has declared an end to delays in clearing vital medicines at the Tema port.

The Public Relations Officer, Isaac Offei Baah, shared this update during an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

Mr Baah revealed that the Ministry is poised to clear 182 containers at the port, which hold essential anti-HIV, TB, and malaria medicines, as well as mosquito nets, by Friday, April 12, 2024.

“These are necessities that as a country we cannot afford to neglect. Since August last year until now, the Ministries of Health and Finance have been working together to ensure that once this clearance is completed, we won’t encounter this issue again. By Friday, everything will be cleared,” he said.

This response follows a notice issued by the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in HIV, AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, warning of action if the government fails to clear the medications stranded at the port within ten days.

Within just 24 hours of receiving the CSOs’ notice, the Ministry of Health issued a press statement detailing its efforts to clear the 182 containers of medical supplies stalled at the Tema Ports.

Baah further noted that the Global Fund’s support to the government involved 453 containers, out of which 253 have been cleared from the port between August 2023 and February 2024, with government assistance.

He outlined the immediate next steps and plans for collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Ghana Revenue Authority, and other stakeholders.

Mahama is bitter over NPP’s free tablets initiative because he couldn’t execute it – Miracles Aboagye

The Director of Communications for Bawumia’s Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has vehemently criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for his recent remarks regarding the educational sector.

Mr Aboagye underscored the achievements of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in recent years, asserting that their progress surpasses that of previous administrations.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, April 9, Aboagye took exception to Mahama’s statements, highlighting the NPP government’s successes, including the distribution of tablets to senior high school students.

“The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party announced that we, the New Patriotic Party, were going to distribute tablets to students of senior high schools in this country. The NDC in their usual impossibility character and posture came out to radicalise this announcement, hoping it will never come to reality.”

“The incompetent former president, after promising to roll out and distribute tablets across this country and failing to implement this promise, comes to question the priority of the government to do the exact thing that he promised some 7 years ago and could not deliver.”

He noted that while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) initially dismissed the announcement as unattainable, the distribution has now commenced. Aboagye expressed disappointment in Mahama’s negativity toward the policy and its beneficiaries.

The National Youth Organizer of NPP, Salam Mustapha, also criticized Mahama’s suggestion to separate the Ministry of Youth from Sports.

Mustapha argued that such a move would not address youth unemployment and demonstrated a lack of comprehension of the issue’s complexities.

“But on the heels of our hard-working Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the policy was launched, and distribution, as we speak, has started. Isn’t it unfortunate that the former president and the NDC, within the full-blown hypocritical parades, came to display their bitterness towards a policy and especially its beneficiaries who are all Ghanaians of this country?”

“His proposed solution to youth unemployment by decoupling the Ministry of Youth and Sports is not only misguided, but it also highlights his lack of understanding of the complexities of the issue. For the avoidance of doubt, sports is one of the means to develop young people, just like creative art.”

He questioned Mahama’s motives, considering his previous pledge to reduce the number of ministries.

“How then can you take away the very critical vehicle to the Ministry and claim to be solving the problem? Is it the same John Mahama who is promising to reduce the number of ministries now promising to create more?”

Sentuo Oil Refinery has not assumed control of TOR – Management

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has denied allegations of an impending takeover by Sentuo Oil Refinery, countering claims of discussions regarding the sale of the national refinery to the Chinese-owned private oil company.

Mensah Thompson, the Executive Director of ASEPA, asserted in a statement on Monday, April 8, that there had been a meeting between TOR management and Sentuo Oil Refinery Ltd to deliberate on the potential sale of the national refinery.

However, TOR released a statement on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, refuting such claims and stressing that no negotiations have occurred regarding the sale, nor has any ceremony been arranged to mark Sentuo’s purported acquisition of TOR.

TOR clarified that their current relationship with Sentuo involves the storage of some of Sentuo’s crude oil in TOR’s storage tanks. When Sentuo is prepared to refine the crude oil, TOR facilitates the transfer back to Sentuo.

Further, TOR assured stakeholders of its commitment to transparency and pledged to promptly disclose any significant developments as they unfold.

Locked up of medical supplies contributing to rise in TB, malaria and HIV/AIDS – CSO

Executive Director of the Africa Center for Health Policy Research and Analysis, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has revealed that the backlog of medical supplies donated by the Global Fund has resulted in a spike in cases of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS.

The supplies, which encompass antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients and mosquito nets for expectant mothers, have been detained at the Tema Port since July 2023 due to import duties.

Due to the delays in clearing these goods, the Global Fund has halted further shipments of crucial medical supplies.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Dr. Anaba expressed concerns about the potential escalation of tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS cases compared to last year’s statistics.

“There is an increase in the cases of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS from last year’s figure, and the complications of people dying from AIDS has also increased. Women getting malaria during pregnancy has increased because of this.”

“Ghana has the statistics of how many people get tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS every year and this can be planned with a top-up percentage of 10 percent and then we can budget for how much of these drugs that we need and then we contact Global Fund on how much they can give us ahead of time and then we budget for money to clear the drugs.”

He recommended that Ghana proactively communicate its supply needs to the Global Fund in advance and allocate funds for timely clearance to prevent future delays.

We will demolish illegal structures on our lands – Parks and Gardens

The Department of Parks and Gardens has issued a firm warning directed at private developers who are encroaching on their land. The department has put forward a threat to dismantle any unauthorized structures erected on their property.

This move comes in response to a recent report by Citi News highlighting land encroachment issues in the Upper West region. Notably, a fuel station has been constructed on land belonging to Parks and Gardens.

Furthermore, an individual named Rev Dr. Ezekiel, claiming to be a trustee of approximately two acres of Parks and Gardens’ land near the Russian Embassy in Accra, is asserting ownership over portions of their property.

Director of the Department of Parks and Gardens, Dr. Kingsford Adams, has strongly cautioned against these encroachments, stressing the determination to reclaim their land.

He expressed concern over the lack of proper documentation for these constructions, alleging that developers take advantage of the absence of oversight during nights and weekends to carry out illegal activities.

“At Parks and Gardens, we are not going to sit and allow this to happen. Go to Wa and see, if there is a problem there. The whole parks and garden lands have been turned into a fuel station. Go to Koforidua and the Western Region, they are stealing our lands. When you go to Tarkwa somebody has put up his edifice on it and you cannot understand what is going on.

“Our big men are just relaxing and getting all the power and I am telling you, we are going to demolish all edifices… whether petrol stations, self-contained houses or high rise buildings, we are going to destroy all…the whole Accra look at what we are facing,” he stated.

“You go to the people who are building the fuel station at Wa, they don’t have any documents. So, it is like they are using their strength. What they do is that they work at night and at weekends when packs and garden are not there.
