I know I will win 2024 elections – Kofi Akpaloo

The founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has confidently declared his intention to emerge victorious in the 2024 elections.

He firmly believed that he possesses the solutions to the nation’s numerous challenges.

In an interview on Onua TV on April 17, 2024, Akpaloo expressed his unwavering determination to become President of Ghana, asserting that nothing will deter him from achieving this goal.

Despite acknowledging the established strength of the major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akpaloo is undaunted.

He attributed his confidence to his unwavering faith in the Holy Spirit and his conviction that his leadership will bring about transformative change.

“I will win the 2024 elections, I have been prepared to be President of Ghana, and nothing will stop that. Forget about the strength of the NPP and the strength of the NDC; everybody knows those two are strong parties.

“I don’t doubt it, but I have one thing within me, and that thing is the Holy Spirit, and I know I will win the elections,” he said in an interview on Onua TV on April 17, 2024.

Diversify operations within GRIDCo, ECG, and VRA – Otumfuo to government

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the Akufo-Addo government to acknowledge the realities of the economic landscape.

He emphasized the importance of government giving precedence to policies that cultivate industrial growth, thereby facilitating job creation and attracting more investment.

He has recommended diversifying public enterprises like the Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) by involving the private sector to ensure crucial financial investments.

These statements were made during the commissioning of a 430-kilometre natural gas pipeline by Genser Energy, aimed at bolstering the nation’s power sector.

Otumfuo emphasized the necessity for the government to involve the private sector in setting up companies to attract more investors and create employment opportunities.

Otumfuo stressed the importance of relinquishing control of industries that the government cannot adequately maintain or run, especially amidst financial constraints.

Our lands are our heritage; we will protect them – Parks and Gardens

Tension heightened at the Headquarters of the Department of Parks and Gardens on Wednesday, April 17, as the department faced challenges with land encroachment.

Rev Dr. Ezekiel, claiming to be a trustee of approximately two acres of Parks and Gardens lands near the Russian Embassy in Accra, asserted ownership over portions of their property.

Department workers intervened to disperse suspected landguards reportedly acting on behalf of the self-proclaimed trustee.

Director of Parks and Gardens, Dr. Kingsford Adams, has reaffirmed their commitment to vigorously protect the department’s property.

“This is our property, this is our heritage. The land belongs to the park and gardens. We didn’t invite the workers they came voluntarily to fight the intruders… they thought that they were cheating us and stealing their property.

“So, it is out of their own love that they have for their department that is why they are there in their numbers. So, anybody that comes around to disturb us we will not forgive him, we will not allow anybody to own our lands.

“What this Dr. Ezekiel is doing is seriously uncalled and we are not going to allow him to own our land. Nobody has sold this land to him,” he stated.

Dr. Adams strongly criticized Dr. Ezekiel’s actions, questioning the legitimacy of his claim and his integrity.

“He is a lair. That is why I ask if he is a reverend minister or what? We went to Cantonment Police Station with all our documents. We sent our certification of allocation because this place was given to us by an Executive Instrument (E.I.) this man came with a handwritten indenture. So, the divisional police commander asked him about the certificates to the land, and he told him that he only had that on his phone,” he added.

I have still not been paid for the money I borrowed to initiate road projects – Kofi Akpaloo

The Founder and Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has revealed that he has accrued significant debts due to the government’s failure to settle arrears for road construction contracts.

He explained that he had obtained loans from financial institutions to undertake various construction projects, but the government has not fulfilled its payment obligations.

In an exclusive interview with 3news, Mr. Akpaloo expressed frustration over the situation, stating that the road projects he initiated in the Bono, Ahafo, and Ashanti regions are more than 60% complete but remain unpaid for.

“We’ve been doing it. We did not get finance from the state or from the agency. We used our own resources to do them, but it’s not been paid. I’ve done it with my money.”

“I borrowed money from the bank to do them, but I’ve not been paid so I’m owing the bank,” he disclosed on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

“We’ve been doing it. We did not get finance from the state or from the agency. We used our own resources to do them, but it’s not been paid. I’ve done it with my money,” he disclosed on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

When questioned about the amount owed by the government, Kofi Akpaloo stated that he could not provide exact figures without documentation but reiterated that he is expecting payment.

Kofi Akpaloo declined to provide an exact amount owed by the government, citing the lack of documentation at his disposal.

“I cannot be able to tell you the exact figures, but they owe me so I’m expecting them to pay. Some [of the projects] are about 70 percent, some about 65 percent but they’ve not been paid. One is Ahafo, one is Bono, one is Ashanti,” he emphasised.

Despite facing criticism regarding the circumstances under which he secured the contracts, Akpaloo maintains that he is capable of delivering high-quality road projects.

Renowned for his ‘sɔme ha, na sɔme ha’ slogan, Kofi Akpaloo expressed confidence in winning the 2024 presidential election.

He founded the Independent People’s Party (IPP) in 2011 but was unable to contest in the 2012 and 2016 elections. Despite legal challenges to his nominations, he established the Liberal Party of Ghana in 2017 and participated in the 2020 elections.

“So far as I’m a Ghanaian… I qualify for anything, you understand. But there are a lot of contractors who are not Ghanaians, they are foreign nationals. So everybody is working.”

“It’s not about the party you affiliate with or you don’t affiliate with. It’s about you being able to have the capacity to deliver. That is what is the most important thing,” he added.

  • I won’t borrow to construct roads if I become president – Alan K

I won’t borrow to construct roads if I become president – Alan K

Presidential Candidate of Movement for Change, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, envisions a development paradigm where the private sector funds road infrastructure, diverging from government loans.

He believes this will remedy the country’s poor road network, especially in the Western Region, known for its significant resource contribution yet neglected roads.

Addressing journalists after touring the Western Region, Mr Kyerematen emphasized his commitment to change the road development narrative.

He proposed incentivizing the private sector to finance road projects instead of relying on government resources.

Tolling major roads and fostering public-private partnerships, akin to successful port ventures, would be instrumental, he noted.

Mr Kyerematen also addressed the persistent illegal mining issue, commonly known as ‘Galamsey,’ stressing the need for a holistic approach.

“I’ve made a policy commitment that under an Alan Presidency, financing road projects will not be done with government budgetary resources. I will create an arrangement where the private sector is enabled and supported with incentives to raise the finances to fund road projects.

“The government does not need to borrow money to fund road projects. With the right incentives private investors, both local and foreign, will be drawn to take on such roles.”

For example, he explained, “This means we have to toll all our major roads. Government resources will then only be restricted to town roads…And it’s not just for roads but all other public infrastructure. If you take the Tema and to some extent the Takoradi Ports, it is a public-private investment. If you take some of the world’s most developed air and sea ports are financed by the private sector, so why not Ghana…”

He advocated for involving small-scale miners in sustainable solutions, proposing a model where they become stakeholders in legal mining ventures, subject to environmental regulations.

Under his governance, Mr Kyerematen pledged to empower youth in mining areas, facilitating legal mining operations aligned with international standards while ensuring environmental stewardship.

  • 3 EC staff, 1 student jailed for stealing BVDs, laptops

3 EC staff, 1 student jailed for stealing BVDs, laptops

An Accra High Court has remanded three Electoral Commission (EC) staff members and one student for the theft of laptops and Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

The four individuals were remanded following a hearing on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

This comes after Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson revealed on Tuesday, March 19, that the EC confirmed the disappearance of seven BVDs, which cannot be traced.

Dr. Forson urged the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to provide details of their ongoing investigations, expressing concern over the potential compromise of future elections.

However, addressing the press in Accra on Wednesday, March 20, Deputy Commissioner at the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, refuted the allegations, stating, “these allegations are not true. No BVD has been stolen. To set the records straight, the Commission recently undertook routine servicing of its Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits”.

He clarified that during routine maintenance of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits, five laptops were discovered missing, not seven BVDs as initially reported.

Dr. Asare emphasized that Biometric Voter Registration Kits, which include a laptop, camera, scanner, and printer, are distinct from the Commission’s Registration Data Systems and incapable of manipulating election outcomes, contrary to suggestions.

“It was during this maintenance that we discovered the theft of five (5) laptops from the Biometric Voter Registration kits, not seven BVDs as erroneously stated.

“For clarification, Biometric Voter Registration Kits, which comprise a laptop, camera, scanner, and printer, are entirely separate from the Commission’s Registration Data Systems and are incapable of manipulating election outcomes as suggested,” he added.

Voting Mahama, Bawumia or Alan will leave you disappointed – Akpaloo to youth

Founder and head of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has cautioned young Ghanaians against supporting any presidential candidate other than his.

He has warned that another term for either the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would result in disappointment.

Mr Akpaloo, known for his ‘sɔme ha, na sɔme ha’ catchphrase, believes it’s time to break the NPP-NDC dominance and secure victory after previous unsuccessful attempts.

“You need somebody who will come and add value to our natural resources; somebody who will produce to meet our needs. So, the young people, you’ll be disappointed voting for them.”

“If you are thinking you’re going to get a job when you vote Mahama or you vote Bawumia or you vote Alan Kyerematen, you’ll be disappointed. The only person who can support you to get your jobs to do is Kofi Akpaloo”.

In an interview with TV3 on Tuesday, April 16, Akpaloo emphasized the need for someone who would enhance the nation’s natural resources and produce to meet its needs.

Although he founded the Independent People’s Party (IPP) in 2011, Mr Akpaloo was unable to contest in the 2012 and 2016 elections and unsuccessfully challenged the rejection of his nominations in court.

After the dissolution of IPP, he established the Liberal Party of Ghana in 2017 and participated in the 2020 elections, expressing confidence in winning the December 7 elections.

Regarding the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the NDC, Mr Akpaloo has dismissed it as a mere slogan lacking substantive details and relevance.

“The people are receiving our message very well. So, it’s more or less like we are still in the structuring, building process. We are building our structures to make sure we have formidable force,” he said.

He believes it’s not worth pursuing, as it fails to address the specific needs and services required during nighttime hours.

Over 2,400 pharmacies integrated into national E-Pharmacy platform

A significant milestone has been achieved with the onboarding of 2456 pharmacies onto the National E-Pharmacy Platform, marking a major advancement for digital healthcare in Ghana.

The nationwide e-pharmacy platform, comprising registered pharmacies, offers the convenience of uploading and purchasing prescribed medicines online, with doorstep delivery upon registration using the Ghana card.

This initiative is part of the government’s agenda to digitize public services and is the result of collaboration between the Office of the Vice President, the Pharmacy Council, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

In 2019, Vice President Bawumia urged the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana to digitize pharmacy services, leading to the introduction of Africa’s first national-scale e-pharmacy platform.

Launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in July 2023 and piloted for six months, the e-pharmacy platform went live in January this year.

Ghana’s pioneering national e-pharmacy platform, with over 2000 participating pharmacies, expands access to digital healthcare across the country.

Upon registration with a Ghana card on the e-pharmacy platform, prescriptions can be uploaded via mobile phone or USSD code at https://www.gnepplatform.com/.

Subscribers can locate nearby pharmacies and check medicine availability, as well as compare prices across different pharmacies.

Using their mobile phones, subscribers can order and pay for medicines, which are then delivered to their homes or specified locations via digital address.

The authenticity of drugs is ensured through integration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) platform, providing peace of mind to users.

Breakdown of monies ‘stolen’ by the Mahama appointee who has been sentenced to 10-year jail term

A social media user, @NanaKwame, has revealed how the former MASLOC CEO, Sedinam Attionu Tamaklo collaborated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to embezzle funds exceeding 90 million Ghana cedis.

Through the X platform, he detailed a series of fraudulent activities orchestrated by Tamaklo, resulting in significant financial losses for the state.

According to Nana Kwame, Madam Sedinam’s fraudulent activities included embezzling over 70 million cedis meant for Kantamanto fire victims in 2013, misappropriating 650,000 cedis allocated for a microfinance project in Ejura, and pocketing 2 million cedis intended for a MASLOC sensitization workshop that never occurred.

He added that Madam Sedinam inflated budgets for bus procurement for GPRTU, collaborated to purchase 350 vehicles at reduced prices, and sold Samsung phones to the then government at inflated rates despite their market availability at lower prices.

Meanwhile, Sedinam Attionu Tamaklo has been handed a 10-year prison term with hard labor.

Similarly, the former Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Axim, received a five-year sentence with hard labor.

Both individuals were found guilty on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, theft, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and violating public procurement laws.

The trial, which commenced in 2019, featured six witnesses presented by the state.

Tamakloe was tried in absentia after departing the country for a medical checkup with court permission, while Axim testified in person but did not present any witnesses.

These convictions arose from the misappropriation of funds earmarked for MASLOC activities between 2013 and 2016.

One instance involved the convicts withdrawing GH¢500,000 as a loan for Obaatampa Savings and Loans company but demanding a refund when the financial institution declined to yield a 24% interest rate on the amount.

How the wife of a Ghanaian Scholarship beneficiary received £6,000 allowance

In 2019, as per a report from The Fourth Estate, the Scholarships Secretariat provided a spousal allowance exceeding £6,000 to the wife of a scholarship recipient.

Desmond Asare, pursuing a Master’s programme at Birmingham City University, received £25,480 (equivalent to GHS 430,612) for tuition and stipend.

Meanwhile, Mr. Asare’s wife received a staggering spousal allowance of GHS 103,428, a revelation uncovered from data released by the Scholarships Secretariat to The Fourth Estate.

Further scrutiny revealed questionable sponsorship decisions, such as funding a student for Luxury and Fashion Management, a field with no recognized businesses in Ghana.

A former Ashesi University graduate, Chelsea Naa Arday, received €20,000 to pursue an MSc. in Luxury and Fashion Management at Paris Business School in France, highlighting questionable allocation practices.

The data disclosed a total expenditure of GHS 437.5 million by the Scholarships Secretariat over 2019 and 2020, encompassing both local and foreign scholarships.

This transparency followed a Right to Information Commission directive, emphasizing the public nature of scholarship funds.

However, analysis unveiled deviations from the secretariat’s mission to support deserving but underprivileged students and Ghanaian workers at minimal cost.

Moreover, concerns arose over awarding scholarships for courses readily available in local universities and colleges, including instances where politically connected individuals or elites’ relatives received multiple scholarships.

Such discrepancies underscore the urgency for stricter oversight and adherence to the secretariat’s mandate to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all deserving Ghanaians.

What did I do to you? – Nduom asks Ofori-Atta over collapse of GN Bank

Business Consultant and Founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has expressed bewilderment at the treatment he received during Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure as finance minister.

He suggested he may have been unjustly targeted without knowing the cause of offense.

Nduom indicated that his businesses suffered undue scrutiny and adverse actions under Ofori-Atta’s leadership at the finance ministry, leaving him puzzled about the reasons behind it.

Addressing queries raised by many regarding his alleged conflict with Ken Ofori-Atta, Nduom took to social media to express his perplexity, inviting answers from the public.

Responding to Nduom’s inquiry, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, former General Manager of GN Bank, accused Ken Ofori-Atta of being envious of Nduom’s success and entrepreneurial prowess. Asamoah-Siaw highlighted Nduom’s competitive edge and significant investments as probable reasons for Ofori-Atta’s actions.

Furthermore, Asamoah-Siaw criticized Ofori-Atta’s handling of GN Bank during the banking sector clean-up in 2019, suggesting that Ofori-Atta perceived Nduom as a threat to his interests and acted accordingly.

GN Bank, which had transformed into GN Savings and Loans under Nduom’s ownership, had its operating license revoked by the Bank of Ghana due to insolvency issues, prompting legal action from Nduom’s side.

“Many, many people have asked me the following question these past two weeks:

“What at all did you do to Ken Ofori-Atta?

“Does anyone have the answer(s)?” he quizzed on social media.

In response, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, who was the General Manager of GN Bank, noted that Ken Ofori-Atta was an enemy of progress who couldn’t stand Dr Nduom’s competitive edge and entrepreneurial spirit.

“I have the answers – 1. You were too difficult to beat in a competitive environment. 2. You had the biggest investment firm in Ghana when his firm was the first to be established. 3. As for GN Bank, your mistake was to send your signature everywhere. That is what you did wrong to an enemy of progress and someone who thinks Ghana belongs to his grandfather,” Kofi Asamoah-Siaw wrote.

MASLOC a setup by politicians for fraud – Security consultant

Renowned security consultant, Richard Kumadoe has labeled the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) as a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by politicians.

This assertion comes in the wake of the sentencing of former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu and interdicted Head of Operations Daniel Axim to a combined 15 years in prison.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe handed down a 10-year jail term to Mrs. Sedina Tamakloe Attionu and a 5-year term to Daniel Axim, along with fines for each convict.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the security consultant expressed concerns over the structure and operations of MASLOC.

He emphasized the lack of accountability, recovery plans, and regulatory oversight, branding the entire setup as fraudulent.

Kumadoe suggested that the current MASLOC boss would likely be apprehensive following the sentencing of her predecessors.

He pointed out numerous loopholes in the system, indicating a systemic issue that politicians have ensnared themselves in.

He concluded by highlighting the pervasive fraudulent nature of MASLOC, which he believes poses significant concerns for its current leadership.

“The structure itself is fraudulent, the disbursement procedure is fraudulent, there is no recovery plan, there is no accountability and there is no regulation around it. So what politicians have virtually done is to set up a political fraud entrapment for themselves.

“Today if you consider the current MASLOC boss, she should be worried and I seriously believe she will be worried. Because the whole structure and setup have so many loopholes, it’s total fraud politicians set for themselves,” he added.

Five-year-old Richlove Addobea Haminu tragically drowned during a heavy downpour in Koforidua on Tuesday.

The heartbreaking incident occurred in front of the child’s family home near the Normal Technical School while her parents were at work.

It’s reported that the young girl was celebrating her birthday on the same day.

Accompanied by her fourteen-year-old sibling, who was collecting rainwater for storage, the child slipped into the flowing water and was swept away.

Efforts were promptly launched by a joint team comprising the Police, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and community volunteers. Despite their thorough search, the victim remains missing.

The family’s home has become a gathering point for sympathizers, offering condolences and support during this difficult time.

Richlove’s mother, Magdalen Agyeiwaa, expressed profound sadness over the incident but remains hopeful for a positive outcome.

She shared the circumstances leading to the tragedy, emphasizing that Richlove was in the care of her siblings at the time.

She narrated to Kasapa News, “Today is her birthday, so I promised to send her to KFC. So, I decided to go to town to get some money to take her to KFC. But when I got to Agatha market, the rains started. I later received a call from one of my mother-in-laws that my daughter had drowned. I was shocked because they don’t go out when it is raining. I rushed home to confirm the sad incident. She was not in the house alone. She was in the care of other siblings. They are five, and she is the fourth born.”

Among those extending condolences is Rosina Tetteh, a teacher at Grace Child Academy, where Richlove was enrolled.

Alongside other sympathizers, she visited the family to offer comfort and solace.

    3. I will directly allocate feeding grants to school heads – Mahama

I will directly allocate feeding grants to school heads – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has outlined plans for the next government of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasizing a decentralized approach to food provision for children.

Speaking during his ‘Building The Ghana We Want Tour’ in Kambatiak, North East Region, Mahama expressed intentions to shift responsibility for food procurement to school headmasters.

In this proposed system, Mahama explained, headmasters would directly procure food for the children instead of relying on the National Buffer Stock.

He emphasized the benefits of decentralization, highlighting that headmasters could purchase food from local farmers, including groundnuts, beans, and vegetables, to ensure children receive a nutritious diet.

Mahama suggested that feeding grants should bypass Buffer Stock and be allocated directly to secondary schools.

This approach, he argued, would empower headmasters to purchase nutritious food for students, ultimately enhancing the Free SHS program.

In essence, Mahama aims to improve the Free SHS initiative by decentralizing food procurement and empowering schools to provide healthier meals for students.

“They are not going to sit and wait for National Buffer Stock to bring the food,” he said.

He noted: “If we decentralise the procurement of food, the headmasters will be able to procure the food from the farmers in the area and they will be able to buy groundnuts, they will be able to buy beans, they will be able to buy vegetables so that the children can get a nutritious diet.

“And, so, the feeding grants should not go to Buffer Stock, And, so, we are going to make Free SHS better,” he explained.

He expressed gratitude to the former controller for his leadership and stressed the importance of staff welfare in achieving organizational success.

In a statement released to the Daily Graphic by Cephas N. Dosoo, the Head of Public Relations of the Controller and Accountant-General, Agyei thanked President Akufo-Addo and Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam for the opportunity to serve the nation.

He urged all department staff to support him in making the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) a better place for all.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, the Outgoing Controller and Accountant-General, expressed excitement at Kwasi Agyei’s appointment from within the department, believing it would motivate staff.

He highlighted significant improvements and technological advancements during his tenure, particularly in payroll, national accounts, and public financial management policies and programs, thanking stakeholders for their support.

Deputy Controller in charge of Audit and Investigations, Wisdom Komlan Messan, also expressed gratitude to the former controller and assured the new Controller and Accountant-General of the staff’s support in his new role.

Kwasi Agyei officially assumed office on Monday, April 15, 2024, bringing over 20 years of experience in the public sector to his new position.

The leadership of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has issued a warning of a nationwide protest due to the non-payment of their accumulated bursary spanning three years.

They are demanding that the government release their accrued funds by the end of the second quarter.

In a statement to the media, the GRASAG President at the University of Cape Coast, Kwabena Agyapong, expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to disburse payments for the academic years 2019 through 2023.

Agyapong stressed the severe consequences of the unpaid bursary, particularly its adverse impact on the academic pursuits of postgraduate students nationwide.

He lamented the hindrance faced by students in conducting their research activities across the country.

Consequently, they are urging President Akufo-Addo to address the issue promptly, warning of a large-scale demonstration if their demands are not met.

Agyapong also raised concerns regarding the Scholarship Secretariat’s failure to facilitate registration for first-year postgraduate students.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, based at the Adaklu District Police Command, is actively seeking Kwame Ayew in connection with the death of his 40-year-old wife in Adaklu Tevikpo.

It is alleged that there were arguments between the deceased and her husband, Kwame Ayew, a few days prior to the incident.

Mr Ayew, identified as the prime suspect, had allegedly made threats against his wife during a previous domestic altercation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, when the deceased, known as Maama, went to the farm accompanied by her teenage son.

Sadly, Maama’s lifeless body was discovered on the same farm later that day.

Philip Tetteh, a family member of the deceased, shared details of the incident.

Currently, the teenage son is cooperating with the CID in their investigation.

Despite efforts by authorities, Kwame Ayew has reportedly evaded capture for the past 24 hours since the tragic event.

Violent clash in Agona Kwanyarko results in injuries and property damage

A clash between youth groups from Agona Kwanyarko Zongo and Agona Fawomaye has resulted in three injuries and property damage, stemming from a dispute over a GH¢500 debt.

Reportedly, Yaw Baah, a resident of Agona Fawomaye, purchased a tree from Kofi Annan for GH¢900.

Unbeknownst to Baah, another member of Kofi Annan’s family had also sold the same tree to someone else.

Months later, Baah approached Kofi Annan for the outstanding GH¢500 payment, which Annan partially settled with GH¢400, leaving a balance.

In an interview with Adom News, Kofi Annan, admitting to owing the remaining amount, recounted being approached by a friend of Baah while at a drinking spot.

Mr Annan’s refusal to pay immediately led to a physical altercation.

Following the altercation, Baah called for reinforcements from Fawomaye and Kwanyarko Zongo, armed with weapons.

The ensuing clash involved gunfire, as well as attacks with broken bottles, cutlasses, and sticks, resulting in property destruction, including damage to television sets and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) properties.

In response to the incident, residents of Agona Kwanyarko expressed concerns about potential reprisal attacks from the town’s youth. Assemblyman Benjamin Sackey of Agona Kwanyarko Ahoroso-Odumase Electoral Area called for calm and urged the police to intervene to maintain peace.

As of now, no arrests have been reported, while those injured are receiving medical treatment.

Man in custody for allegedly robbing former Second Lady, Matilda Amissah Arthur

A self-proclaimed entrepreneur is currently on trial at the High Court in Accra for allegedly masterminding and executing robberies targeting high-profile individuals and elites in their homes.

Among the alleged incidents, Yahuza Osumanu is accused of robbing a 76-year-old woman in Ridge and assaulting the wife of a former Vice President, Matilda Yaaba Amissah Arthur, by strangling her and striking her head with a gun.

During the robbery at the former Second Lady’s residence, he purportedly stole GH₵28,000, £50, and $2,200.

The prosecution claims that Osumanu employed similar tactics in other robberies targeting affluent businessmen and women, resulting in the theft of valuables valued at millions of Ghana cedis.

Items allegedly stolen include two Rolex watches worth $61,000, two Cartier wristwatches worth $19,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth $1,000, jewelry worth $50,000, and more.

Additionally, the prosecution alleges that Osumanu used proceeds from these crimes to purchase luxury vehicles and apartments for himself, including a Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Prado, and Lexus.

Chief State Attorney Frances M. Ansah, leading the prosecution, has charged Osumanu with 26 counts of robbery and money laundering. Despite pleading not guilty, he has been remanded into prison custody pending a reappearance on May 2, 2024.

According to CSA Ansah, the Police CID received numerous complaints of residential robberies during the second quarter of 2023. A police investigation led to the identification of Osumanu, aided by CCTV footage from Kaeela Courts Apartments provided by Dr. Abu Sakara Foster on December 4, 2023. Further incidents reported in December 2023, involving additional victims, contributed to the identification and subsequent arrest of Osumanu in Kasoa on December 15, 2023.

I will ensure corrupt government officials are prosecuted – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has issued a firm caution to current government officials implicated in the misallocation of state finances.

He affirmed that should he win the forthcoming elections, those responsible for such actions would be answerable for the detriment caused to the nation.

Mr. Mahama underscored that his objective is not to initiate a witch hunt but rather to guarantee the proper utilization of state assets, ultimately benefiting the people of Ghana.

Addressing the audience during his “Building the Ghana We Want” tour in the North East Region on April 16, he emphasized the significance of accountability and transparency in governance.

He stated that individuals found guilty of financial mismanagement would face repercussions.

The former president pledged to empower investigative and anti-corruption bodies to function efficiently under his administration.

By allowing these entities to execute their duties without interference, he intends to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law in Ghana.

Mr. Mahama encouraged Ghanaian youth to maintain optimism and support the NDC in the 2024 elections, promising a brighter future under his leadership.

He stressed the necessity for collective efforts in constructing a prosperous and just society, highlighting the pivotal role of the youth in shaping the nation’s trajectory.

“… But I can assure them that the people of Ghana will hold them accountable for what they have done. We are not going to witch hunt anybody, but if you have messed up the lives of the people of Ghana and you have misappropriated their money, you must account for it. So investigative institutions and corruption institutions are going to work and the youth of this country must recognise the harm inflicted on you,” he said.

    10. Performance Tracker was born out of Delivery Tracker – Miracles Aboagye

Performance Tracker was born out of Delivery Tracker – Miracles Aboagye

The Director of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development at the Presidency, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has responded to the controversy surrounding the Performance Tracker (performancetracker.gov.gh) following its launch by the government.

Criticism has been directed at the government in the wake of the Performance Tracker’s introduction, which aimed to showcase ongoing and completed projects attributed to the Akufo-Addo administration.

Some members of the public have likened the Performance Tracker to the previously launched Delivery Tracker (deliverytracker.gov.gh) from 2020, deeming it redundant.

Furthermore, accusations have emerged suggesting that projects initiated by prior administrations were falsely attributed to the Akufo-Addo government. The administrators of the tracker have acknowledged this error, removing 67 such projects from the website.

In an interview on JoyNews on April 15, 2024, Miracles Aboagye, the Communications Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, clarified that the Performance Tracker serves as an enhancement of the Delivery Tracker.

He emphasized the importance of the tracker in enabling the government to demonstrate its accomplishments to the people of Ghana since assuming office.

“The performance tracker is an upgrade of what we did already,” he stated. “If you recall in 2020, we sought to display some of the programs and projects that the government has undertaken. So, this is just a continuation of something we’ve already been doing.”

Aboagye highlighted the significance of accountability and transparency in governance, asserting that enabling public scrutiny of government projects forms a crucial aspect of responsible governance.

He encouraged citizens to scrutinize the listed projects and voice any concerns, affirming that such engagement contributes to the accountability process.

“The performance tracker is an upgrade of what we did already, if you recall in 2020, we sought to put out some of the programmes, and projects that the government has run. So, this is just a continuation of something we’ve been doing already.

“I think the first one was what we called the Delivery Tracker and this is the Performance Tracker, basically an upgrade of what we did in the past. I think it’s something that we need to encourage in governance. A key component of proper governance is accountability and transparency for that matter,” he said.

“… let the people know what’s happening, let them critique it, let them query it. There’s nothing wrong if you put yourself out there for the people and they even identify gaps and they raise concerns about those gaps. It’s the government’s way of accounting.”

It is sad, every elected officer is called a thief – Joe Wise

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Owusu (Joe Wise), has announced his intention to retire from public service once his tenure in the 8th Parliament ends.

Citing health concerns exacerbated by the pressures of public service and politics, Joseph Osei-Owusu stated that he would no longer continue in public service.

He expressed distress over public perceptions labeling politicians and public servants as thieves, despite his personal commitment to integrity and refusal to solicit support from others.

Furthermore, Osei-Owusu refuted the notion that legislators could be deemed thieves, highlighting their limited involvement in handling public funds. He clarified that MPs do not directly manage public finances, with their responsibilities primarily focused on approving budgets rather than allocating or disbursing funds.

“It hurts to hear people call you a thief only because you opted to work for the public. Listen to all public discussions.

“Every politician, every elected official is called a thief. Nothing hurts me more than that; when I can say with pride that I have never asked for support from anybody,” he is quoted to have said.

He added, “I have never asked for anybody to give me anything before. I do my work so those are the things that I think have contributed to my health issues. Now I have health issues so I want to leave the field quietly and endure my pain”.

Newly graduated nurses and midwives protest in rain to demand posting

Nurses and Midwifery Association marched through the streets of Accra to voice their concerns on Tuesday, April 16 to voice their discontent .

Their dissatisfaction primarily targets governmental bodies, particularly the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), for their failure to provide financial clearance for nine months, hindering the permanent employment prospects of trained nurses and midwives from accredited institutions since 2020.

Unfazed by the heavy rain, the determined nurses and midwives continued to fervently demand improved working conditions.

The protest kicked off at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, with participation from both the Rotational Nurses and Midwifery Association and the Graduate Unemployed Nurses.

Subsequently, they marched to the Ministry of Health, formally presenting their initial petition.

Among the demonstrators was Karen Appiah, a 28-year-old mother and unemployed nurse, who arrived with her baby securely strapped to her back.

Since 2020, she has anxiously awaited employment opportunities, holding onto hope for a brighter future for herself and her child.

The Secretary of the Unregistered Nurses and Midwives Association, Atta Asante, revealed turning to illegal mining activities for survival.

Karen, Atta, and their fellow demonstrators eventually made their way to Parliament House, where they submitted their petition to Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror.

He stressed the need for an unyielding, round-the-clock door-to-door campaign to secure a resounding victory for John Dramani Mahama.

Western Regional NDC Chairman Nana Toku, in a brief address, urged the recipients to maintain the pickups effectively to fulfill their intended purpose.

    15. I am passionate about your welfare – Alan tells Agona Nkwanta electorates

I am passionate about your welfare – Alan tells Agona Nkwanta electorates

Presidential Candidate Alan John Kyeremanten, representing the Movement for Change, has pledged to construct a state-of-the-art, multifunctional market for traders and businesses in Agona Nkwanta, Western Region.

During his campaign tour of the Western Region, Mr. Kyeremanten was disheartened by the condition of the main market in Agona Nkwanta, which serves as a bustling hub for farmers from the Ahanta and Nzema areas.

Many traders operate in the open due to space constraints, while those with lockable stalls face challenges such as inadequate lighting and congestion.

Addressing the traders, Mr. Kyeremanten expressed empathy for their plight and promised to transform their trading environment if elected president.

“It is unconscionable to be trading in these heartbreaking conditions. I understand how industrious my sisters and mothers are and how you strive to care for the home. Therefore, it is imperative that you trade, in an atmosphere that is commensurate with your toils and sacrifices. I feel it. I am passionate about your welfare and, therefore, will change that.”

He emphasized the need for traders to have a conducive atmosphere commensurate with their hard work and sacrifices.

Mr. Kyeremanten urged the traders to reconsider the dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the past three decades, asserting that little has changed.

He positioned himself as a viable alternative capable of changing the country’s economic trajectory.

“It will be your bank, and your financial needs will be their utmost priority.”

“We are just tired of NPP and NDC. We need to try someone else. Allan has been around for a while now. His campaign promises go to the core of our survival and I think we should try him and see,” said one of the traders

Additionally, Mr. Kyeremanten acknowledged the difficulties traders face in accessing credit for their businesses and reaffirmed his commitment to establishing a bank specifically tailored to their needs.

In response to Mr. Kyeremanten’s campaign promises, some traders expressed fatigue with the NPP and NDC and voiced support for his candidacy, citing his comprehensive approach to addressing their concerns.

In a separate engagement at the Takoradi light industrial area, known as Kokompe, Mr. Kyeremanten empathized with artisans grappling with rising import duties on spare parts and vehicle accessories. He pledged to alleviate their burden by removing import duties on spare parts within the first two years of his administration, emphasizing the importance of economic stability for their businesses.

Mr. Kyeremanten criticized the government’s allocation of tax waivers to foreign companies while neglecting indigenous businesses. He stressed the need for policies that prioritize the survival and growth of local enterprises.

Artisans welcomed Mr. Kyeremanten’s commitment to their well-being and expressed readiness to support a candidate who prioritizes their interests and offers tangible solutions to their challenges.

    16. The next president who tries to fight corruption in Ghana will die in 2 weeks – Okyeame Kwame

The next president who tries to fight corruption in Ghana will die in 2 weeks – Okyeame Kwame

Renowned Ghanaian artist, Okyeame Kwame, has proposed that Ghana’s future hinges on the mindset of its youth.

He believes that the entrenched corruption within the current political landscape renders significant change unattainable.

The artist, known as the Rap Doctor, highlighted the pervasive corruption within both major political parties, asserting that attempts to reform the country would likely result in the demise of any president due to the powerful network of corrupt individuals.

“NDC/NPP cannot help Ghana; family is what can help Ghana. The problem affecting us as a people is a problem of the mind.

“The corrupt system cannot fix itself; it makes a lot of people rich and happy. If a president wants to come and fight corruption in the country right now, he will be dead in 2 weeks.

“It’s not about pay; it’s not about money; it’s about morality,” he said.

According to Okyeame Kwame, the key to Ghana’s progress lies not in political affiliations but in the transformation of individual moral values.

He contends that the corrupt system perpetuates wealth and contentment for many, making it resistant to internal reform efforts.

He attributes the root of corruption to the collective mindset of the Ghanaian people, emphasizing the need to instill incorruptibility in the younger generation. Okyeame Kwame advocates for a shift in focus towards nurturing ethical principles in children to counteract the influence of corrupt politicians.

Regarding the existing political leadership, Okyeame Kwame foresees their eventual demise, underscoring the necessity of cultivating selflessness in future generations.

He posits that by prioritizing the moral education of youth, Ghana can pave the way for genuine development and progress.

“The politician was put in power by you and me; they are a representation of us, so if they are corrupt, it shows that you are corrupt.

“I agree that politicians are causing problems, but as you fight the politicians, train your child not to think like a politician.

“My vision is that we train our children to be incorruptible so that they will grow up and do away with this corrupt system. That is the only way I think Ghana would develop. Let us focus on training the young ones now,” he said.

Recommissioning of Ameri Power Plant demonstrates govt’s lack of vision – NDC

The Ashanti Region chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced apprehensions over relocating the Ameri Power Plant from the Western Region to the Ashanti Region.

They have urged the government to prioritize tackling financial challenges within the power sector.

Critiquing the government’s plan to recommission and rename the plant, originally established in 2015 during John Mahama’s presidency, the NDC labeled it as “another lie and deception of the clueless, dishonest, and incompetent Akufo Addo/Bawumia administration.”

Scheduled for commissioning on Wednesday, April 17, by President Akufo-Addo, the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project aims to enhance system voltage and stability in the middle and northern regions.

The government argues that the plant, expected to generate at least 250 megawatts, is essential for reliability and stability in the national grid.

Ahead of the commissioning, the Ashanti Region NDC urged the government to prioritize addressing financial challenges in the power sector.

The NDC’s Ashanti Regional Communications Officer, Abass Nuruddeen, criticized the move, considering it a misallocation of resources.

He questioned why $30 million is being spent on relocating the plant, suggesting that such funds could be better used to alleviate the hardships faced by Ghanaians.

Mr Nuruddeen compared this expenditure unfavorably with the $10 million sought by Otumfuo Osei Tutu to renovate the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, highlighting the apparent disparity in resource allocation.

“Why will the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government waste scarce resources to recommission a power plant that has already been commissioned in 2015?

“How on earth does the mere relocation of the Ameri Power plant from Aboadze in the Western Region to Kumasi cost $35million which is over three times more than the $ 10 million Otumfuo Osei Tutu is soliciting to renovate the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital?”

Tuah-Yeboah further elaborated on the implications of the judgment, emphasizing its role in expediting justice.

He reiterated Ghana’s legal framework for extraditing individuals from abroad to face legal consequences domestically.

“We have started the process but with this judgment, it’s going to speed up the process. You know in Ghana we have various laws. You can choose to stay away but so far as we have laws for which you can extract from other countries to Ghana, in case there is a judgment against you like this one, be rest assured that she will be brought down to face judgment,” he stated.

The court found both Tamakloe and Axim guilty on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, theft, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and violating public procurement laws, all resulting in the loss of public property.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opted out of the Ejisu by-election set for April 30, following the demise of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, John Ampontuah Kumah.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, stated that the party is redirecting its efforts toward preparing for the main parliamentary elections in December.

Last Saturday, April 13, delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency elected Kwabena Boateng, the second Vice Chairman of the party in the constituency, as their candidate for the by-election.

In a media briefing, Mr. Kwetey reiterated the NDC’s decision to abstain from the by-election, highlighting their dedication to groundwork for the December polls.

“NDC will officially not be taking part in the Ejisu by-election. We have already set into motion processes leading to December 7, just a few months away. We want to continue those processes and ensure that come December 7, we are prepared to combat in all the constituencies and Ejisu will be one of them. So for this particular by-election, NDC will not be part of it. We are very confident about the processes we have in place. We just want to make sure we have the time to implement them fully. Leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako (Cheddar), has firmly refuted reports suggesting his intention to purchase Ghana should citizens not vote for him in the 2024 elections.

He asserted that such claims are fabricated to tarnish his image, emphasizing that he has never made any such statement regarding buying the country.

According to Bediako, the notion of buying Ghana is preposterous; he maintained that it is beyond his capability to acquire an entire nation.

Instead, he emphasizes his possession of knowledge and wisdom, which he believes can drive Ghana forward and enhance the lives of its youth.

“Please I don’t have money to buy Ghana. Let’s not make people use us to destroy our own. That is betrayal.

What I have is wisdom and knowledge. It’s by dint of the grace of God that’s why I can say that any form of help that I can render to this country to make it better for the youth.

I want to be remembered for my impact in the lives of the youth when I am no more here that is why I have decided to join this race and nothing else,” he said in a video to address issues,” he added.

Akrobeto’s comedic flair shone as he took the stage to commend the Asantehene for the impressive project. His humorous remarks and amusing delivery delighted the crowd.

“Otumfuo has built a magnificent hall that accommodates 7,000 people. When he speaks, everybody listens globally. You can criticize him, but you cannot deny his supremacy. Even former president Kufuor acknowledged Otumfuo’s influence during his reign by seeking his counsel. He has done remarkably well,” Akrobeto quipped, evoking laughter from the audience.

The inauguration of the 7,000-capacity Jubilee Hall is among the numerous projects initiated by the Manhyia Palace in preparation for the forthcoming 25th anniversary celebration of Otumfuo’s reign.

    25. ‘Akosua Kuma’ course 53 cadet list fueling conflict within Police Service

‘Akosua Kuma’ course 53 cadet list fueling conflict within Police Service

Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, is encountering resistance as he endeavors to rectify discrepancies in the 53rd Cadet Course for Senior Police Officers.

This resistance is allegedly marked by evasive tactics, notably under the leadership of embattled Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Minister Henry Quartey, who unearthed significant irregularities in the selection process for participants in the senior officers’ course at the National Police Academy and Training School, ordered a halt back in February.

There are grave concerns that the actions of the Police Hierarchy leading up to the examination and selection of officers for the 53rd Senior Officers Course “has the potential to affect morale in the service as a whole”, part of the first paragraph of the Minister’s letter said with reference number SCR/VB 78/226/01 copied to the Chairman of the Police Service Council.

It is worth noting that similar “issues” occurred under IGP Dampare during the 51st Officer Cadet Training, which attracted the attention of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) two years ago.

In an effort to rectify the situation, the Minister, who announced a supplementary list, faces opposition from forces allegedly driven by “police higher-ups,” who resist the remedial efforts of the Ayawaso Central lawmaker.

The Minister seeks to rectify an anomaly whereby 300 officers were selected under dubious non-transparent circumstances, and another set of over 200 officers were “recommended by special arrangement” without considering their exam performance, which was supposed to be the basis for qualification, aiming for fairness for those legitimately left out.

Leading the criticism against the Minister is NDC ex Policeman Peter Toobu.

According to Mr Toobu, such announcements by the Minister are “unhealthy” and risk “tainting” what he referred to as Course 53, potentially hindering the professional development of cadets.

In a Facebook post, Mr Toobu criticized Mr Quartey, labeling him a “walking contradiction” for cautioning against inciting the public while making statements that could provoke tensions within the police force.

However, Mr Toobu has encountered fierce counterarguments on his social media page, with some allegations made against his person.

“Hon. Toobu please stop peddling the falsehood. What was in the Minister’s visit and comment? Or was that what you were doing for your party when you were in the office? I can see you are being chase by your own ghost

SMH — Is this another way to blackmail the Minister? You did same thing which got Former IGP Asante Appietu out of office. You are here again championing same blackmail agenda for someone I won’t mention here. Oh Gosh!! all these are MPs making laws for us in this country, why won’t the country retrogress ??

of all, you’ve made these BASELESS ACCUSATIONS without a single evidence to support your claims. Who in his right senses will believe you aside mentally restarted ones who apply NO logic to analyze issues. Mr. MP, if this is the strategy of your party just to make the Minister unpopular, then you are lost in the sea. I don’t blame you. I blame someone behind all these blackmail. But lemme tell you, the Minister is well focused on his mandates, these open blackmail will not wash because the Minister is well focused.

“You can bring your evidence so that we analyze it. Until then, no one takes you serious. We rather see you as an agent for blackmail,” he added.

This architectural masterpiece offers a plethora of amenities, including a cocktail lounge, offices, a fully air-conditioned and acoustically designed hall with a capacity of 2000, approximately 60 washrooms, ample parking, and a modern kitchen.

In his address, Juabenhene emphasized the hall’s seamless integration of tradition and modernity.

Designed to resemble a traditional home, the hall features a welcoming foyer with a water pot, a cocktail lounge for 400 guests, and a conference hall accommodating 40 attendees.

The main hall, akin to the Great Hall at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), boasts central air-conditioning.

Upon entry, guests are greeted by intricately adorned walls showcasing traditional designs, including a three-dimensional Golden Stool replica, a figure playing the talking drum, and various Adinkra symbols.

Beyond its functionality, the hall will serve as a venue for Asanteman meetings, cultural performances, symposiums, and other events.

The decision to name the hall after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II aims to immortalize the King’s legacy for future generations.

Juabenhene recounted how the construction, initially kept secret, became a testament to Otumfuo’s vision and leadership.

His decision to personally fund the project underscores his commitment to the welfare of traditional authorities.

Dignitaries present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Lady Julia Osei Tutu, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, and Brigadier General Michael Opoku, among others.

The dedication ceremony received joint honors from the Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Kumasi, Rt Rev Gabriel Justice Ankokye, and the Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Kumasi, Rt Rev Oscar Christian Amoah.

I voted for Akufo-Addo because I thought he was going to save Ghana – Martin Kpebu

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has recently revealed his reasons for supporting Akufo-Addo in the 2016 general elections, citing his belief that Akufo-Addo would bring about transformative change akin to a “junior Jesus” figure.

Mr Kpebu expressed confidence that Akufo-Addo would address the challenges faced during the tenure of then-President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program, on April 13, 2024, Mr Kpebu explained, “I voted for Akufo-Addo, clear, because I thought that this was junior Jesus in 2016. I voted for him because I thought he was the one coming to change everything. In hindsight, I suffered a bias because he has been a lawyer much longer than I have been, so I looked at the personal things I was doing, and I said then, if this man is decades ahead of me, then he must be super super. Not knowing there is no logic in it.”

Mr Kpebu’s comments came in response to a recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, which indicated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party, is trailing behind opposition candidate John Dramani Mahama in the race for the presidency in 2025.

According to the poll results, JDM leads with 54.3%, followed by DMB with 34.9%, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten with 7.5%, Nana Kwame Bediako with 2.3%, and all others with 1%.

We will publish names of our debtors by May – GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) plans to pursue legal action against delinquent customers who do not settle their financial obligations by the end of May 2024.

The company intends to publish the names of these customers, along with the amounts owed, in national newspapers.

“We need to take more harsher steps. We are giving customers who are indebted to us up to the middle of May to settle their bills. If they fail to do that, then we will name and shame.”

Mr Martey highlighted that customer indebtedness negatively impacts the company’s operations, hindering its ability to maintain infrastructure, provide uninterrupted services, and expand to serve underserved communities.

“Accumulated debts hinder the company’s ability to sustain its operations efficiently, maintaining existing systems, infrastructure, uninterrupted services, and undertaking expansion projects to provide essential water services to the unserved and underserved communities.”

The total owed by customers is approximately 1.2 billion cedis over a decade.

He warned that GWCL would utilize all available legal avenues to recover outstanding debts.

Voltage and power quality will be addressed by Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project – VRA

The inauguration of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project on Wednesday, April 17th by President Akufo-Addo, is poised to tackle voltage and power quality concerns in Kumasi and northern Ghana.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) affirmed that this initiative will elevate system voltages, thereby enhancing overall system stability.

The initiative aims to enhance system voltages, thereby improving overall system stability in the region.

Notable dignitaries expected to attend the event at Anwomaso Kumasi include Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and VRA CEO Ing. Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa.

This endeavor follows a comprehensive grid impact study conducted by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), recommending a minimum of 250MW of power generation in the Ashanti Region to ensure grid reliability and stability.

Additionally, the VRA asserts that siting a power plant in Kumasi will enhance power quality and reliability for consumers in central and northern Ghana, while efficiently optimizing the nation’s strategic energy assets.

The project, funded entirely by the VRA’s internal resources, aims to maximize the utilization of gas resources in the western region and create employment opportunities in Kumasi and its environs. Moreover, it provides avenues for practical training in thermal power operations for students of institutions like Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Kumasi Technical University.

      Background:

The Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project emerged following the conclusion of the BOOT agreement between Ameri Energy Limited and the Government of Ghana concerning the former Ameri power plant. In 2022, the plant transitioned to Ghanaian ownership and was subsequently transferred to the VRA. The strategic decision to relocate the plant to Kumasi led to the project’s renaming as the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project, wholly funded by the VRA’s internally generated funds.

Implemented in two phases, the first phase, initiated in May 2023 and commissioned on Wednesday, involves relocating six TM2500 units with a total generation capacity of 150MW. The second phase, slated for completion in June 2024, aims to further increase the plant’s capacity to 250MW. Execution of the project is overseen by VRA’s in-house engineering team, with support from selected service providers.

There is confusion, come clear with transport fares – Passengers Association to transport operators

The Association of Passengers Ghana has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparent communication from transport operators concerning proposed increases in transport fares nationwide.

In a press release dated Monday, April 15, the Association’s convener, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, highlighted the adverse effects of this communication gap, causing confusion among commuters and drivers alike.

Ms. Asamani stressed the urgent need to resolve this issue promptly, cautioning that prolonged inaction could escalate into a situation contrary to the interests of Ghanaians.

“While acknowledging recent increases in petrol and other essential commodities, necessitating higher transport fares, we underscore the necessity for clear communication to prevent misunderstandings between bus conductors and commuters, given the prevailing economic challenges and other factors affecting commuters’ living conditions.”

“Whether the increase amounts to 20% or 30%, it should be explicitly communicated to prevent confusion. We urge our members to remain calm while awaiting the official approval of the proposed 20% fare increase by recognized unions GPRTU and GRTCC.”

The association voiced concerns that the ambiguity surrounding approved fares might escalate tensions between passengers and transport operators.

Consequently, the Association of Passengers Ghana called upon transport operators to promptly engage their members on approved fares and ensure transparent communication with the public.

They emphasized the importance of disseminating accurate information to prevent further confusion and safeguard the interests of both commuters and drivers.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) recently issued a joint advisory urging commuters not to accept any new fares that have not been officially approved.

This advisory follows an announcement by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana regarding a proposed 30% fare increase scheduled to take effect on Saturday, April 13.

In their joint press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributed the decision to raise fares to the government’s perceived failure to adequately address long-standing issues within the transport sector.

However, the directive has resulted in some confusion and disagreement between commuters and drivers regarding the implementation of the new fare adjustments.

    34. Ghana will have the lowest tax rates within ECOWAS if I become president – Alan

Ghana will have the lowest tax rates within ECOWAS if I become president – Alan

The Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has pledged to abolish several taxes on imports, which he considers unnecessary and burdensome for traders.

He made this commitment during a meeting with members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

Mr. Kyerematen stressed that eliminating these taxes and levies would position Ghana as having the lowest tax regime among ECOWAS countries.

He believes this move will ease the financial burden on traders and create a more favorable environment for trade and investment, thus fostering economic growth.

This pledge demonstrates Kyerematen’s dedication to addressing traders’ concerns and promoting favorable business conditions in Ghana.

He aims to reduce the cost of doing business, stimulate trade, and enhance Ghana’s economic competitiveness in the region by removing these taxes.

“Under my presidency, Ghana will have the lowest tax rate regime in ECOWAS”.

“I will ensure a recalibration of the existing tax regime structure to optimize revenue mobilisation from direct taxes (personal and corporate), and reduce over-reliance on indirect taxes (import duties, levies, and charges) to make the corporate sector more competitive and profitable,” he added.

Govt will prevent over spending by state institutions during election year – Ernest Addison

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing state institutions from draining the nation’s finances with election-related expenses.

He emphasized that this narrative has hindered the economic advancement of the country, a challenge the government aims to address this year, notwithstanding the upcoming elections.

Dr. Addison highlighted that Ghana has historically struggled to execute IMF-supported programs during election years due to excessive spending by state entities.

During a press briefing on Saturday, April 13, 2024, after Ghana reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement, Dr. Addison stated, “In Ghana’s recent history, we have not been able to successfully implement an IMF-supported programme in an election year without derailment.” He emphasized the government and the Central Bank’s commitment to changing this pattern.

It is anticipated that the IMF Board will approve Ghana’s third tranche of GHS$360 million in June this year, following the staff-level agreement between Ghanaian authorities and the IMF Mission team.

This approval would bring the total disbursement for Ghana’s ECF arrangement, supported by the Post-COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG), to US$1.56 billion.

To date, Ghana has received US$1.2 billion from the first two tranches of the US$3 billion three-year IMF loan-support program.

The overarching goal of the program is to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability, enhance resilience, and establish the groundwork for stronger and more inclusive growth.

    36. You will be president if you do this within 90 days – Zimbabwean Prophet to Mahama

You will be president if you do this within 90 days – Zimbabwean Prophet to Mahama

British-Zimbabwean, Prophet Uebert Angel, has indicated that the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, can assume presidency if he obeys an instruction from the Lord.

According to him, Mahama’s victory has been approved by God as he saw him approaching the presidency throne to take a seat.

According to Prophet Uebert , God has given Mahama three assignments to accomplish in order to become victorious in the upcoming December polls.

He added that the assignments must be done within the next 90 days and the paramount of them all is placing a specific phone call.

“These things if you do, you will be the one to sit on the same seat. And he is supposed to do them within the next three months. If he has done it I will come back and tell you straight, if has not done it I will be here to tell you that time. If he doesn’t do it I will tell you in the next 90 days that Mahama will not  be president there. But I saw Mahama approaching the throne as if he wants to sit on the throne and the Lord said it’s open. Just do three things. One of them is a phone call, even if he ignores the two. That phone call is important,” he added.

He further revealed that, God once elected a leader for Ghana who was to fix certain mistakes but then that individual failed along the way due to of lack support.

As such, he indicated that Mahama is a leader destined to make Ghana stable and a better place for the people of God.

“There is a thing I was shown about Ghana. God said I am about to shift Ghana. Not that it was evil but there were mistakes that were made when I got a plan to execute what should happen in Ghana. I chose a leader that was going to better the season for the people of God. That man was my choice but in the execution of it there were mistakes that were done, and there was lack of support for the leader in fixing what I needed fixed. So I saw a man approaching the throne, as he was about to approach the throne, God said wait. There are three things I want you to do,” he stated.
