More than 6,000 supporters of Alan’s Movement rejoin NPP – Report

Approximately 6,000 young politicians from across the country, who had previously left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to join Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, have announced their return to the NPP.

Led by former NPP parliamentary candidate aspirant for Adentan, Alfred Ababio Kumi, the group admitted that their decision to leave the NPP was a mistake.

During a press conference held in Accra, Ababio Kumi publicly acknowledged their error and declared their renewed support for the NPP flagbearer.

“It has become evidently clear that we made a mistake; a mistake that we humbly admit and are ready to work to ensure that its dire effect is reversed or averted.

“Since the February 7, 2024 speech by the flagbearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, we have been asking ourselves questions that bother on the future of this country and the very Ghana that we young people want,” he stated

Meanwhile, the Nationwide Supporters of Alan Cash (NAWSAC) have strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly attempting to bribe the youth to abandon their support for Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change and return to the NPP.

In a statement released on Monday, April 22, 2024, NAWSAC expressed concern over the NPP’s underhanded tactics and urged the youth not to be swayed by financial inducements.

The group’s convener, Luther-King Junior, emphasized that young people are disillusioned with both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to their manipulative behavior and remain determined to stand by their convictions and support for Alan Kyerematen’s leadership.

3 die in tragic gas explosion at Kumasi

A devastating explosion of domestic gas has struck Sepe, a suburb of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving one individual injured.

The deceased, identified by authorities as Hamdella Jibril (37 years old), Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam (5 years old), and Rafat Huruna (18 years old), tragically lost their lives in the explosion.

Meanwhile, Majid Adams, the sole survivor, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The incident occurred around 8 am on April 10, 2024, when Hamdella Jibril detected a gas leak emanating from their six-kilogram gas cylinder in the kitchen.

Attempting to address the issue, Jibril moved the cylinder outside, unaware of the nearby coal pot ablaze.

Regrettably, the ignition from the coal pot triggered a powerful explosion, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Despite the severity of the explosion, the affected family chose to bury the deceased without informing the police. It wasn’t until April 19, 2024, that an informant alerted authorities about the incident, prompting an investigation.

Upon arrival at the scene, police officials confirmed details provided by family elders, who disclosed that the deaths occurred on different dates following the explosion.

“Police proceeded to the scene and met three elders of the deceased’s family namely Mohammad Muniru Ridwan, Fuseini Wahab and Gibrine Lami, who confirmed the story.

“According to the elders, the incident occurred on April 10, 2024 about 8am, resulting in the death of Hamdella Jibril, aged 37, Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam, aged 5, and Rafat Huruna aged 18.

“Majid Adams, who was also affected by the explosion, is currently on admission at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” a Manhyia Divisional Police report sighted by the paper said.

The report said the trio did not die on the same day, noting that, “On April 11, 2024, Kenyeyiti Meena died and on April 17, 2024 Haruna Adams and Hamdella Jibril also died,” adding, “The three deceased have since been buried without informing the police.”

Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam passed away on April 11, 2024, while Rafat Huruna and Hamdella Jibril succumbed to their injuries on April 17, 2024.

The trio was laid to rest without prior notification to law enforcement.

As part of ongoing investigations, three family members of the deceased have been summoned to assist the police in gathering further information regarding the tragic incident.

The wastefulness of the political system in Ghana frightens me! – Bright Simons

The Vice-President in charge of research at the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simons, has expressed profound concern regarding what he perceives as alarming wastefulness within Ghana’s political system.

Addressing the X platform, Simons illuminated a critical aspect of governance that he believes urgently requires attention and reform.

One specific issue highlighted by Mr Simons is the recent controversy surrounding the adoption of a new electoral register.

“The WASTEFULNESS of the political system in Ghana FRIGHTENS me! Many didn’t pay attention, but when IMANI opposed the new electoral register, our main reason was that the EC intended to trash thousands of devices in good condition. No one cared,” he wrote.

Despite objections from the advocacy group IMANI, which raised concerns about the unnecessary disposal of thousands of functional devices by the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Simons expressed dismay at the apparent lack of public outcry over the matter.

A recent report by IMANI revealed that the Electoral Commission (EC) intends to discard a system valued at $60 million, with at least $40 million of value accumulated since 2016 alone.

According to the group, the implementation of this new biometric system is estimated to cost $150 million (plus contingency).

IMANI’s report suggests that a careful analysis of best practices in procuring biometric technology for elections in Africa indicates that the EC’s proposed spending plans are inflated by about 60 per cent.

They argued that the EC’s proposed system is disproportionately expensive compared to similar systems in other African countries.

Angry woman pours water on Peter Amewu’s men during door-to-door campaign

Tensions allegedly flared in the Hohoe Constituency as the Member of Parliament (MP), John Peter Amewu’s campaign team faced resistance during a door-to-door tour.

Allegations emerged that individuals, purportedly affiliated with the campaign, were rejected and even had water thrown at them by angry residents.

In a video shared by a user identified as @nanayaaprempeh, three men, believed to be part of John Peter Amewu’s campaign team, can be seen engaging with a woman in what appears to be a doorstep interaction.

Suddenly, the situation took a dramatic turn as the woman expressed her displeasure by throwing a pan of water at the men.

On Saturday, January 27, 2024, delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Hohoe constituency enthusiastically acclaimed MP, John Peter Amewu, as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming December elections.

Since 1992, Hon. John-Peter Amewu has made history as the first NPP candidate to secure victory in a parliamentary election within the stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieving this milestone in the 2020 election.

  • Akufo-Addo is the Moses of our time – Wontumi

Akufo-Addo is the Moses of our time – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has likened president Akufo-Addo as Moses in the Bible.

Speaking to the media he indicated Akufo-Addo’s vision and mission is to catapult Ghana into a better place, thus the promised land, like the days of the Israelites.

However, certain hurdles like the Covid-19, Russia – Ukraine war and Israel-Palestine Iraq war have hindered president Akufo-Addo’s motives and aspirations.

“Everyone will see that Akufo-Addo has served well. It is sad that Akufo-Addo has now become where he had wanted to take us due to some circumstances like “Covid-19”, “Russia – Ukraine war”, “Israel-Palestine Iraq war”.

According to him, for Akufo-Addo to make amends he has tasked the vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who represents Joshua in the scriptures to lead the country to an expected end.

He added that Bawumia’s running mate will be capable and supportive enough to aid the New Patriotic Party (NPP) securing a third term as well as drive the country to its destination.

“Therefore Moses Akufo-Addo has handed the rod to Joshua Bawumia. When Bawumia’s running mate is unveiled that person will become Caleb to support Joshua Bawumia for Ghanaians to cross the red sea,” he added.

No government has invested in Ghana’s education like Akufo-Addo – Kwesi Pratt

Veteran Journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has expressed deep admiration for President Akufo-Addo’s significant infrastructure investments in the education sector of Ghana.

Mr. Pratt shared his sentiments during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show programme, Kokrokoo, moderated by Kwami Sefa Kayi on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

“I thought inspite of Free SHS there was nothing government to write home about but I have chanced on some information that points to the fact that a lot is going on in the education sector. I know what I am talking about and Kwami, you know that I do not talk without facts. A lot is happening, and the construction of new science laboratories is also ongoing,” he added.

Also present on the panel were deputy campaign chairman and strategist for the 2024 campaign team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),  Nana Akomea, and Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum.

He questioned why government’s not creating public awareness about the significant investments made in education.

“This morning I was enquiring from Nana Akomea [leading member of the New Patriotic Party, NPP] who was a member of the panel, why the government has made all these massive investments in the country’s education sector but very little is heard about them.

Acknowledging prevailing economic difficulties, Mr. Pratt expressed his astonishment and appreciation for the Akufo-Addo administration’s accomplishments in the education sector, urging the government to better showcase its achievements.

Mr. Pratt advocated for prioritizing education achievements over digitalization in government communication efforts.

“The education sector undoubtedly has challenges that we all read and know about but if you look at the construction of new science laboratories going on across the country, it explains why examination results in the sciences have greatly improved and I think this is what the government should be talking about,” Kwesi Pratt said.

Mahama’s chances of winning December polls are high – Fitch Solutions

A report by Fitch Solutions predicts that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of former President John Mahama, will emerge victorious in the upcoming December polls.

The analysis, published on Friday, April 5, 2024, asserts that the NDC is poised to secure victory after two terms of New Patriotic Party (NPP) governance.

This projection stems from the increasing public perception of economic mismanagement in Ghana, driven by persistent inflation and declining living standards.

“We anticipate that the opposition National Democratic Congress WILL WIN the upcoming December 2024 general elections in Ghana, following two terms of New Patriotic Party rule.

“The rising perceptions of economic mismanagement in Ghana due to persistently high inflation and weakened living standards will erode support for the incumbent New Patriotic Party in the elections.

As a result, support for the incumbent New Patriotic Party is expected to diminish.

Fitch Solutions also anticipates minimal social stability risks leading up to the elections, citing Ghana’s established democracy and history of peaceful transitions of power as contributing factors.

“We believe that social stability risks will be limited in the run-up to the vote given Ghana’s entrenched democracy and history of peaceful transfers of power.”

“We anticipate that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, will win Ghana’s December 2024 elections.

“Our forecast is informed by the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP)aEURtms waning popularity, attributed to rising popular perceptions of economic mismanagement and the erosion of real household incomes over the past two years.

“Notably, inflation averaged 40.3% across 2023 – the highest rate since 1996-largely due to the sharp depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar (the cedi has depreciated by 21.2% against the dollar since January 2023).

“In a survey by Global Info Analytics, 65% of respondents cited the economy as their foremost concern, and it is our view that the NDC is strategically positioned to secure victory in the upcoming general elections, particularly given that 41% of those surveyed by Afrobarometer, a pan-African research institution, expressed strong disapproval of the current members of parliament.

  • “A pot shouldn’t tell charcoal it’s black” – Prof Marfo tells NPP for calling Mahama incompetent

“A pot shouldn’t tell charcoal it’s black” – Prof Marfo tells NPP for calling Mahama incompetent

Former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofori Marfo, has criticized the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), labeling them as “incompetent.”

His critique emerged amidst a discussion surrounding the issue of ‘dumsor,’ a local term denoting erratic power supply.

Professor Marfo’s remarks were triggered by recent statements from NPP representatives, who branded their adversaries in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, as incompetent.

However, he argued that such accusations lacked credibility when coming from a party that, in his perspective, had displayed similar inadequacies.

“A few days ago, I heard their spokesperson say, incompetent Mahama. It sounds so bitter to me because they have exhibited the same incompetence…a pot shouldn’t tell charcoal that it’s black…when it comes to this particular issue (incompetence), they (the NPP) have no grounds to call Mahama that because they have failed,” oyerepaonline.com quoted him to have said in an interview on April 18, 2024.

Addressing the issue of ‘dumsor,’ Professor Marfo contended that the NPP had failed to effectively tackle the problem during their administration.

He highlighted that during the NDC’s tenure under Mahama, endeavors were made to alleviate the electricity crisis, with some members of the NPP acknowledging enhancements in power supply.

Audit reports from cash waterfall mechanism to be published by govt – Amin Adam

The government has unveiled plans to release audit results concerning the cash waterfall system, aiming to bolster transparency and accountability within the country’s energy sector.

This initiative arises amidst significant financial hurdles facing the sector, notably a substantial debt owed to independent power producers totaling over one billion dollars.

Implemented in July 2017 to alleviate the mounting debt, the cash waterfall system sought to streamline revenue collection and distribution. However, its efficacy has been constrained, necessitating enhanced transparency and resolution of implementation hurdles.

Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam highlighted the significance of the cash waterfall system during the 2024 World Bank and IMF Spring meetings, affirming the publication of audit findings to ensure transparency.

Energy analyst Dr. Yussif Sulemana lauds this move, asserting its potential to address fiscal challenges by fostering transparency.

“The cash waterfall mechanism is important because at least it ensures that there’s cash flow, every player in the value chain has some cash flow so that they can be able to meet their operational cost but it’s important to also state that we’ve had challenges implementing the cash waterfall mechanism as a result of which through collaboration with the World Bank, with the IMF, we have instituted some measures to make it effective.

“One of the measures we have introduced is to audit the cash waterfall mechanism quarterly. But we have also been required to publish the audit findings.”

“I think it’s a step in the right direction for transparency. So if you notice the problem that we have, some of them are induced and that has made it multifaceted and that has made it difficult to disengage which you need to tackle, which you need to prioritise.”

  • My honeymoon comment misunderstood – Mahama

My honeymoon comment misunderstood – Mahama

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer has clarified his request for a potential honeymoon period upon assuming the presidency, emphasizing that it was misunderstood and taken out of context.

Former President John Mahama clarified his recent plea for a grace period, particularly addressing trade and labor groups, amid their increasing demands for improved conditions.

During a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe as part of his ‘Building Ghana’ tour of the Volta Region, Mahama urged Ghanaians to grant his administration time to revive the economy before addressing specific demands.

He emphasized the need to assess the damage caused by the previous administration before taking action.

“And you will realise the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy. This country is broke, and so we will beg you that when we come into office, give us a bit of a honeymoon. Let’s put things in place so that we can bring the economy back onto its feet.”

“And I will plead with the teachers union, GNAT, NAGRAT, UTAG, and TEWU, and all of them. I know all of you are clamouring for allowances. Let me caution you that in 2025, when we take over, we will show you the books and the finances of this country.”

After facing criticism, especially from the ruling government, for his comments, Mahama stressed that he did not seek a personal relaxation period but rather an opportunity to assess the economy’s state and address the damage caused by the previous government.

He clarified his remarks during an interaction with teacher unions, including the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), who presented their concerns for consideration in the NDC manifesto.

In response to their requests for a review of their conditions of service and improvements in the education sector, Mahama reiterated his stance on avoiding hasty promises in light of the country’s economic challenges.

“So I said I was not going to make that promise and that they should give a bit of a honeymoon, and that is what I said that was misinterpreted to say that I want a honeymoon when I become president. I had my honeymoon with Auntie Lordina thirty-something years ago. And so I don’t require any honeymoons. I meant we should give the economy a honeymoon; we will see what is there, and as we create, we can share,” he explained.

He emphasized the need to focus on practical solutions rather than making unrealistic promises driven by crowd excitement, which, he believed, contributed to the current economic crisis.

NPP will win Ejisu by-election – Nana Boakye

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains optimistic about winning the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, despite the emergence of independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi as a strong contender.

Both the party’s national and regional executives have intensified their campaign efforts within the constituency, expressing confidence in retaining the Ejisu parliamentary seat.

Henry Nana Boakye, National Organizer of the NPP, affirmed the party’s unwavering confidence in an interview with Citi News, stating, “Ejisu is clearly NPP, and NPP is Ejisu…we do not believe any independent candidate can secure victory in the Ejisu Constituency.”

The party further emphasized that Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Member of Parliament for the area running as an independent candidate, has made minimal contributions to the constituency’s development.

Nana Boakye emphasized that the independent candidate does not pose a threat to the party’s anticipated triumph.

“Clearly Ejisu is NPP and NPP is Ejisu…we do not see that any independent candidate can win the Ejisu Constituency.

“We have a vibrant and energetic lawyer and we are strategically positioning the party to win this hands down,” he stated.

“The facts are there; under President Kufuor, he was appointed at the Ministry of Highways as a director. Under Nana Akufo-Addo he was appointed as a deputy minister of roads…NPP gave him the opportunity to be an MP for 12 good years.”

My goal is to ensure that we live in a bilingual Ghana – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana into a bilingual nation by integrating the French language into its linguistic fabric.

He emphasized that several initiatives are underway to achieve this goal, including the introduction of bilingual education in select subjects at the elementary level.

President Akufo-Addo made these remarks during the 60th anniversary celebration of Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra on Friday.

Catherine Dauer, the Principal of Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra, commended the school’s academic accomplishments and highlighted the partnerships it is forging with other institutions.

“The goal of government is to ensure that we live in a bilingual Ghana where both French and English are spoken together with our indigenous languages. We’ve already begun to work towards this,” he stated.

“I am very proud to be the principal of Jacques school. It is something beautiful because we have a lot of students here, around 700 and each student that is coming from Ghana or all around the world are part of a very big network like the AFC which is the French Agency for French Language in foreign countries.”

“So indeed, in the world, we have around 555 schools and there is a link between each school. And as a French school, we also develop a lot of partnerships with Ghanaian schools or American schools,” she stated.

We’re not part of Alan’s alliance – Crusaders Against Corruption

The Crusaders Against Corruption group has officially distanced itself from Alan Kyerematen’s Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC).

Following assertions by a prominent member of the Movement for Change, Yaw Buaben Asamoah, suggesting an affiliation between their group and the Movement for Change, the Crusaders Against Corruption vehemently denied such claims as entirely false.

In a statement signed by Chief Crusader Emmanuel Wilson Jnr., the group referenced an interview on April 17, where Buaben Asamoah purported that the Crusaders Against Corruption had aligned with Alan Kyerematen’s movement.

Mr Wilson clarified that these claims were baseless and urged the public to disregard any insinuations linking them to the ARC.

“I want to put on record that the communication by Mr. Buaben Asamoah is misleading and not factually true. Neither myself nor my organisation is part of any alliance.

“I strongly dissociate myself and Crusaders Against Corruption Ghana from it, and would want the public to disregard any publication of such,” the statement read.

Major roads in Ejisu under renovation ahead of by-election

The government has commenced the renovation of vital roads across several neighborhoods within the Ejisu Municipality, affirming its dedication to ensuring prompt project completion.

Inspecting ongoing projects on April 18, Roads and Highways Minister Francis Asenso Boakye dismissed claims that the initiatives were prompted solely by the impending by-election in the area.

Approximately 32 road projects are in progress within the Ejisu Constituency, managed by various departments including Urban, Feeder, and Highway.

The Minister clarified that these contracts were initiated within the past three months, predating the passing of Ejisu MP John Ampontuah Kumah.

“Currently, about 32 projects are going on in the municipality, these projects include urban roads, Ghana Highway authority, and Feeder roads projects. I’m satisfied with the work going on, the contractors are some of the best we have.”

“I’m confident they will continue to work very hard so that we can complete the project as scheduled. None of these projects was awarded in the last three months.

“These are not by-election projects, for the past three years, some of the projects have been going on. The MP who passed on was instrumental in making sure that these projects were designed and constructed.

“Rest assured; these are not by-election projects; these are normal projects the ministry is implementing,” he said.

He underscored that the construction endeavors aren’t exclusively linked to the forthcoming by-election, highlighting the government’s broader commitment to nationwide infrastructure enhancement.

Assuring residents, Bantama MP emphasized that road rehabilitation aims to bolster connectivity, safety, and socio-economic growth in the region.

“Presently, around 32 projects are underway in the municipality, covering urban, Ghana Highway Authority, and Feeder roads projects. I’m content with the progress; the contractors are among the best we have,” he stated.

“I’m confident they will maintain their diligence to ensure timely project completion. None of these projects were initiated in the past three months.”

“These aren’t by-election ventures; some have been ongoing for three years. The late MP played a significant role in their development and execution.”

“Rest assured; these aren’t by-election ventures; they are standard ministry projects,” he affirmed.

Contractors are presently engaged in projects across communities like Achiakrom, Abankro, Donyina, Onwe, and Adako Jachie.

Using calcium carbide to ripen fruits is hazardous – FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to traders regarding the use of calcium carbide to hasten the ripening of mangoes, highlighting its dangerous properties and potential health hazards for consumers.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the FDA emphasized the toxicity of calcium carbide and condemned its use to expedite fruit ripening as both hazardous and illegal.

The FDA urged the public to report any instances of chemical ripening of fruits in the country, stressing the paramount importance of consumer safety.

This caution from the FDA was prompted by a viral video suggesting the use of calcium carbide by certain traders to ripen mangoes, necessitating public awareness efforts to differentiate chemically-ripened fruits from organic ones.

While conducting an ongoing investigation, the FDA clarified that there has been no evidence of mangoes containing calcium carbide thus far.

“The survey and testing are still ongoing alongside public education by the FDA on the hazards of using chemicals to enhance the ripening of fruits,” the statement further elaborated.

Furthermore, the FDA discredited the credibility of the “floating test” method shown in the video, stating that it lacks scientific substantiation.

The statement also highlighted various factors, such as pest infestation by fruit flies and mango moths, that could cause fruits to float, underscoring the need for caution and vigilance in fruit selection.

Fresh criminal charges leveled against Former PPA CEO

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed fresh criminal charges against the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Adjenim Boateng Adjei.

Adjei now faces eight new counts linked to the misuse of his public office for personal gain and manipulating procurement processes to gain an unfair advantage in contract awards.

These charges were brought forth by the Special Prosecutor at the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra on April 17.

These new accusations add to the previous charges Adjei was confronting, which consisted of seventeen counts. Among these, he was accused of establishing Talent Discovery Limited (TDL) as a guise to unlawfully secure public contracts.

The latest charges comprise eight counts of leveraging public office for personal profit and nine counts of influencing procurement processes, both directly and indirectly, to secure an unfair advantage in contract awards.

Furthermore, Adjei’s brother-in-law, Francis Kwaku Arhin, who allegedly acted as the CEO of TDL and holds a minority stake, faces one count of exploiting public office for personal gain.

Adjei had served as the CEO of PPA from March 2017 to August 2019. His dismissal from the position came after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo acted upon a recommendation from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which was prompted by his involvement in a documentary titled “Contract for Sale.”

God will even send me back to become male again if I die – Old video of Bobrisky talking about his death pops up

In a recently resurfaced video, controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, asserted that if he were to pass away, God would reincarnate him as a male.

Bobrisky emphasized that he was originally created as a male by God, not a female.

In the video, Bobrisky confidently expressed his conviction that upon his demise, God would instruct him to return to earth in his original male form.

“God will even send me back to become male again if I die God will say this is not the person I created , I created a boy, I didn’t create a woman go back to earth and go and bail yourself,” he said.

In the meantime, Bobrisky has been sentenced to six months in jail without the option of a fine. Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the verdict on Friday morning, April 12.

Bobrisky pleaded guilty to four counts of Naira abuse filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), leading to the judge’s decision.

The trouble began when Bobrisky was caught on camera spraying money at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s highly anticipated film “Ajakaju” at Film One Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos, last month.

Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, likely prompting authorities to take action.

This incident is not the first time a Nigerian celebrity has faced legal consequences for Naira abuse.

Stop labeling me as an NPP pastor – Owusu-Bempah

Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International (GWPMI), Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has emphasized that he maintains no political allegiance.

Owusu-Bempah clarified that labeling him as a supporter of any particular political party, especially the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is inaccurate, asserting that he harbors no animosity towards any political faction in the nation.

“Some have tagged me as an NPP pastor, I am not. What it is, is that whatever God reveals to me is what I state, as in, I go where the revelation leads me. Just because a pastor releases a prophecy that does not go in your party’s favour; that doesn’t mean he hates you.

“I do not hate NDC or NPP but what I see is what I speak to. I came out myself this year to pronounce that I will not speak on who will win the 2024 polls. I know it but won’t divulge it.

“I will meet with whoever will win the polls, if they listen to directions that I will give, they will be victorious,” he added.

During an interview on Okay FM, where he reiterated recent criticism directed at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the religious figure known as the Nation’s Prophet emphasized that he merely conveys what he perceives as revelations from God.

He continued to criticize former ally President Akufo-Addo, highlighting that since private channels of communication have been cut off, he will continue to voice his concerns publicly.

He accused Akufo-Addo of relinquishing control of the nation to his relatives, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

“We did not vote for them, none of them was elected to take the presidential seat. Things are not going well and he (Akufo-Addo) must be told.

“Even if Ofori-Atta has been relieved of his post, the Akyem Mafia so-called are in charge. I am pained like most NPP people who cannot openly complain, God will ask me if I fail to tell him the truth while he is in office,” he emphasized.

56-year-old man receives 24-year prison sentence for defiling minor

The Tarkwa circuit court has handed down a 24-year prison sentence with hard labor to a 56-year-old farmer, Kwaku Sarfo, also known as Kantanka, for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old pupil.

Sarfo, upon his appearance before the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Despite Sarfo’s plea for leniency, the court dismissed his request, deeming it necessary to impose a harsh sentence to dissuade individuals like him from perpetrating such crimes against innocent girls in Tarkwa and its vicinity.

Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie, who led the prosecution, informed the court that the victim, a primary four pupil, lived with Sarfo, who was also her neighbor, in Anokwa within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.

According to Essel-Dadzie, on Thursday, March 28, 2024, around 1:00 PM, the victim was sent by her parents to fetch water from a nearby stream for household purposes.

While on her way, Sarfo called the victim and entrusted her with a white margarine container to fetch water for him.

Upon returning with the water, Sarfo instructed the victim to take it to his room, followed her, locked the door, and proceeded to forcefully have sexual intercourse with her.

Afterward, Sarfo warned the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone and instructed her to return home.

The following day, the victim’s parents noticed she was bleeding from her vagina. Despite their inquiries, the victim remained silent. Subsequently, they took her to the Prestea Government Hospital for medical attention.

During her examination at the hospital, the victim disclosed her ordeal to the medical officer.

The victim’s parents promptly reported the incident to the Prestea police, who issued a medical report form for her treatment.

Sarfo attempted to evade arrest but was apprehended by the police in Prestea on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

In the first quarter of this year, road accidents claimed the lives of at least 609 people across the nation, marking a rise from the 553 fatalities recorded during the same period last year.

Additionally, 3,823 individuals sustained various injuries, compared to 3,747 reported last year. The total number of accidents rose to 3,405 this year, slightly up from 3,367 in the corresponding period last year.

The Head of Public Relations at the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sateckla, shared these figures with the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

She emphasized that the recorded accidents represented a 1.13% increase.

Among the accidents were 573 pedestrian knock-downs, involving 1,978 commercial vehicles and 2,520 private vehicles. The primary causes were identified as speeding and driver fatigue.

Mrs. Sateckla highlighted ongoing efforts by the NRSA, in collaboration with the police and Bloomberg Philanthropic Initiative for Global Road, to intensify awareness campaigns targeting drivers and road users.

Several drivers were apprehended for traffic violations such as speeding and driving under the influence, and subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, where fines were imposed.

She urged drivers to strictly adhere to road safety regulations to curb accidents, fatalities, and property damage, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.

Mrs. Sateckla reassured the public of the NRSA’s commitment to collaborating with the media, Ghana Police Service, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, and stakeholders to enhance public awareness on road safety.

She underscored the adverse socio-economic impacts of road accidents and called on all citizens to support the road safety campaign, emphasizing the preventable nature of most accidents and the necessity for collective action to address the issue.

  • EC clears six aspirants for Ejisu by-election

EC clears six aspirants for Ejisu by-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that six candidates have been given the green light to participate in the upcoming Ejisu by-election, slated for Tuesday, April 30.

The nomination period ended on Thursday, April 18, with some contenders rushing to submit their forms at the EC’s Ejisu district office in the Ashanti Region.

Leading the group is Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, who secured the second position.

Former MP Ing. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, running as an independent candidate, will be fourth on the ballot, while Beatrice Boakye representing the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) will appear third.

Esther Osei is the Convention People’s Party (CPP) candidate, listed first on the ballot. The last two spots are held by Gabriel Agyemang Joseph and Joseph Attakora, both independent candidates designated fifth and sixth, respectively.

However, the nomination process faced controversy when executives of the CPP reportedly tried to block their own parliamentary candidate, Esther Osei, from submitting her nomination papers.

Regional Chairman Emmanuel Gallo purportedly instructed the EC not to accept the documents, causing uncertainty for Osei’s campaign team.

This incident arose due to an internal dispute within the CPP, following the resignation of several top officials. Deputy National Organiser Eric Osei Boateng criticized the Regional Chairman’s actions and clarified that the internal issues have been resolved by the High Court.

Following communication with the EC regional office and headquarters, the nomination forms have been accepted.

The final list of candidates for the Ejisu by-election is as follows:

    Esther Osei (CPP)
    Lawyer Kwabena Boateng (NPP)
    Beatrice Boakye (LPG)
    Kwabena Owusu Aduomi (Independent)
    Gabriel Agyemang Joseph (Independent)
    Attakorah Joseph (Independent)
The by-election, scheduled for April 30, 2024, under the supervision of the Electoral Commission, aims to elect a Parliamentary representative for the Ejisu Constituency following the passing of Member of Parliament John Kuma, who also served as the deputy finance minister, on March 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, the largest opposition party, the NDC, has failed to nominate a candidate for the by-election, stirring speculation about the upcoming contest.

Former three-time New Patriotic Party member of Parliament Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, running as an independent candidate, is anticipated to give his former party a tough challenge.

The NPP allegedly supported Mrs. Helena Mensah, the presiding member of the Ejisu municipal assembly, and directed all the MMDCEs in the Greater Kumasi metropolis to campaign for her to secure the party’s parliamentary candidacy for the by-election, aiming to counter Aduomi’s influence in the constituency.

However, the delegates reportedly voted for Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, the former vice-chairman of the constituency, maintaining Aduomi’s camp’s unity ahead of the election.

    Vote-buying Campaign

Twelve days before the by-election, the ruling New Patriotic Party has reportedly dispatched road contractors to the constituency to initiate road construction projects, aiming to sway voters.

Stop interfering in our operations – ECG tells Ashanti Regional minister

Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region have raised concerns about what they see as unwarranted interference in their operations by the regional minister, Simon Osei-Mensah.

The controversy arose following the arrest of ECG’s General Manager, Michael Wiafe, prompted by a complaint from the minister.

The dispute stemmed from Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) being disconnected from the national grid due to an alleged GH¢1.2 million outstanding debt.

Minister Osei-Mensah asserted that he had instructed ECG to notify him before disconnecting power to public universities.

Feeling this protocol was disregarded in the case of KsTU, he filed a complaint, resulting in the General Manager’s detention.

In response, ECG staff, represented by the Senior and Junior Staff Unions, issued a statement rejecting the minister’s authority over their activities.

They clarified that ECG does not report to him nor does it take directives from him on revenue mobilization and collection.

The staff demanded an apology from Minister Osei-Mensah to the General Manager and ECG as a whole.

They also called for the withdrawal of the case against Mr Wiafe from the police station by Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Failure to meet these demands would result in a protest by ECG staff in the Ashanti Region. They pledged to hoist red flags and wear red attire on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, to demonstrate their dissatisfaction.

“We the Senior Staff Union and the Junior Staff Union of the four (4) Regions of Ashanti are registering our displeasure about the actions of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah over the way he spoke to the General Manager/Ashanti East, Ing. Mark Wiafe Asumani over the disconnection of Power Supply to the Kumasi Technical University.

“His report to be the Zongo Police Station, the subsequent arrest of the General Manager, and he (GM) being granted a self-recognizance bail.

“…We want the Regional Minister to know that ECG does not report to him and does not take instructions from him on all of its activities including Revenue Mobilization/Collection,” part of the press statement said.

The staff urged the public to disregard the minister’s actions and ensure timely payment of electricity bills to maintain uninterrupted power supply.

A financial analyst, Scott Bolshevik has suggested that Ghana’s trajectory would have taken a darker turn if any of the two members of the “Big Six”, Edward Akufo or J.B Danquah had ascended to the presidency instead of Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah.

Taking to the X platform, he stated that rather than fostering progress, these figures would have prioritized exploitation.

The economist pointed to a historical trend wherein Mr Akufo and Mr Danquah harbored ambitions of familial control over critical resources.

He added that, however, their aspirations were thwarted by the recurring turmoil induced by coups, preventing the realization of their objectives.

“If Edward Akufo or J.B Danquah had been the first president of Ghana instead of Kwame Nkrumah, it’s plausible that they would do nothing good for the nation but exploit it. It was the family goals to control key resources but failed due to coups till now They are curse,” he wrote.

Cancel Free SHS if that is what is causing price of fuel to rise – Angry driver tells Akufo-Addo

An aggrieved driver has voiced his frustration over the government’s decision to increase fuel prices.

He linked the government’s intention to the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

Speaking to the media, the driver questioned the rationale behind the fuel price hike in connection with the purported benefits of Free SHS, calling for its cancellation.

“How will free shs help me? Why would you increase fuel due to Free SHS? Why would you let me suffer. Free SHS is not helping, cancel it, it is not helping,” he lamented.

With fuel prices hitting record highs, concerns over the impact on transportation costs and living expenses have escalated.

While the Free SHS policy has been lauded for increasing access to education, its implications for government spending and fiscal policy have come under scrutiny.

Critics argue that the policy’s financial implications, coupled with external factors such as global fuel price fluctuations, have contributed to the current economic challenges.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has issued a cautionary advisory, urging commuters to refrain from accepting any new fares that have not received official approval.

This comes in response to an announcement made by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, proposing a 30% fare increase set to come into effect on Saturday, April 13.

In their joint press release, the GPRTU and the GRTCC attributed the decision to raise fares to the perceived failure of the government to adequately address longstanding issues within the transport sector.

However, the directive has led to some confusion and disagreement between commuters and drivers regarding the implementation of the new fare adjustments.

  • State Attorneys oppose Dafeamekpor’s move to compel Bagbin, Akufo-Addo to act on Anti-LGBT+ Bill

State Attorneys oppose Dafeamekpor’s move to compel Bagbin, Akufo-Addo to act on Anti-LGBT+ Bill

State Attorneys have reversed their stance in the mandamus case initiated by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, which seeks to compel the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and President Akufo-Addo to take action on the Anti-LGBT+ Bill within seven days.

Initially, the State had indicated to the Court that it wouldn’t oppose the substantive application but would instead respond on legal grounds.

However, during the court session on Thursday, April 18, the State unexpectedly filed an affidavit in opposition, surprising both the Court and the applicant’s lawyers.

The High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Ellen Lordina Serwaa Mireku, had previously adjourned on April 9 for the Attorney General’s Office to submit legal submissions.

However, a Principal State Attorney, George Tetteh Sackey, stated that they filed their affidavit in opposition on April 17.

As a result, the case has been adjourned to April 29 for the applicant’s lawyer, led by Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, to file a response to the Attorney General’s affidavit in opposition.

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson-Dafeamekpor, has brought the application to the High Court, seeking to compel the Speaker of Parliament to present the Anti-LGBT+ Bill to the President within seven days.

Additionally, the Plaintiff requests the Court to compel the President to either accept the bill and sign it or indicate to Parliament his inability to assent within the same period.

The application for Judicial Review, in the form of Mandamus, filed on March 22, is based on the grounds that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been duly passed by the Parliament of Ghana in accordance with Article 106 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

“When I gained consciousness, I realized I was at a different place – the place was very beautiful. The place was even more beautiful than this world. The people who live there are just like humans, just that some of them are short like genies while others are very tall.

“After I gained consciousness, I cried for two months. I became like a source of entertainment for them, when they touched me and I cried they became happy. But after I stopped crying, they sat and stared at me quietly,” she said in Twi.

She added, “The place was very beautiful, it is in a very huge stone, I wish I was not brought back. Where we slept was amazing… I don’t even know how to describe it”.

The Plaintiff argues that the Bill “must be transmitted to and received by the President of Ghana for assent or otherwise” in accordance with Article 106 of the Constitution.

Woman recounts how she survived an abduction by dwarfs for 6 months

A young woman from Kwahu-Tafo, a community in the Eastern Region, has recounted her experience after allegedly being abducted by dwarfs.

She was reported missing for six months before being discovered under mysterious circumstances on the outskirts of town on April 15, 2024.

Local residents suspect that she was abducted by dwarfs.

Following her reappearance, a spiritualist named Nana Kwame Mframa was summoned to conduct rituals at the site before she was safely returned home.

Now, the young woman has confirmed that she was indeed taken to a different world by the dwarfs.

In a widely circulated video interview, she described the realm as extraordinarily beautiful, expressing a reluctance to return to our world.

She further disclosed that upon regaining consciousness, she cried for two months, becoming a source of entertainment for the dwarfs. However, once she stopped crying, they observed her silently.

Nana Kwame Mframa advised her to follow all instructions given by the dwarfs to avoid potential punishment.

You have one week to settle unpaid pensions – NAGRAT tells govt

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has voiced concerns regarding the government’s alleged failure to fulfill mandatory contributions for over 700,000 Ghanaian workers.

During a press conference on Thursday, April 18, NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, accused the government of financial misconduct.

He specifically pointed out the non-payment of Tier 2 pension scheme contributions and other third-party deductions since July 2023.

Mr. Carbonu stressed that while these contributions are deducted from workers’ salaries, they are not reaching the intended institutions.

This, according to NAGRAT, raises significant doubts about the future financial security of these workers, particularly concerning retirement.

NAGRAT has issued a one-week ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate transfer of all outstanding deductions to the appropriate institutions.

Mr. Carbonu warned that failure to comply with this ultimatum could lead to further action being taken to address what they perceive as financial misconduct by the government.

Ghana’s first modern train has been fully assembled and installed – Amewu

The Minister for Railways Development, John Peter Amewu, has announced the successful assembly and installation of the first unit of modern trains procured by the government onto the railway track.

Mr Amewu revealed that both mechanical and electrical tests are scheduled to be conducted soon to facilitate practical testing of the trains on the railway.

“I am happy to announce that, the assembling of these components has successfully been completed and the installation of the trains on the railway track has also been done. Following this progress, electrical and mechanical tests would be carried out to pave the way for the practical testing of the trains on the tracks. Signalling and other relevant operational tests will be conducted soon after the engineers start navigating the train along the full length of the 100k railway line,” part of his post on social media platform Facebook read.

He wrote, “The trains are ultramodern, fuel-efficient, high-performing, and built for tough terrains like Ghana’s.”

Describing the trains as ultramodern and fuel-efficient, Mr Amewu emphasized their suitability for challenging terrains like those found in Ghana.

“The trains are ultramodern, fuel-efficient, high-performing, and designed for challenging terrains like those in Ghana,” he stated.

Mr Amewu commended the Akufo-Addo administration for completing the Tema-Mpakadan railway project, highlighting its significance in Ghana’s transportation landscape.

“All accolades to the NPP government for its commitment to completing the Tema-Mpakadan railway project. This significant milestone sets the stage for passenger onboarding and operationalisation. Since the era of colonial railway services, no administration has made such substantial investments in revitalising our railway sector as the Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia administrations. We are steadfast in our commitment to elevate Ghana’s railway industry to a standard that is admired across the West African sub-region.”

Fix our roads if you want our votes – Mallam residents to govt

Residents of Mallam, situated along the ‘borla’ road within the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, took to the streets on Thursday in protest, demanding the asphaltation of the 1km road.

Approximately a hundred residents participated in the demonstration, escorted by police officers.

They brandished placards bearing messages urging authorities to address the road issue, with slogans such as “No road, no vote.”

Despite the observation by the news team of a pile of stones and coarse sand on the road shoulders, residents claimed it was merely a superficial attempt to appease them, rather than a genuine effort to resolve the problem.

Spokesperson for the group, Abel Tetteh, expressed disappointment in the lack of regard shown by local authorities and the failure of the Member of Parliament (MP) and assembly members to tackle the road issue.

Mr Tetteh questioned the government’s commitment to asphalting the roads, highlighting that other neighborhoods in Accra have received asphalt roads while they continue to wait for theirs.

Now, the residents are making a direct appeal to the government to intervene and provide the necessary assistance to improve their road conditions.

“It has happened, because these people do not respect us, first of all, they invited us, they didn’t come to us again. We want an asphalt [road] with a white line.

“The government said he’s doing asphalt everywhere. So where is ours? So we’re appealing to the government that he should come to our aid and come and do our road for us.

“We don’t want the MP to come again because the MP has failed us, and the assembly members too have failed us…we the residents concerned, residents of Bola Road, are tired of the road and the dust for 30 years now we are not okay with the dust.”

  • NPP has spend money judiciously than the NDC – Dr Frank Banor

NPP has spend money judiciously than the NDC – Dr Frank Banor

The Director of Research at the Danquah Institute, Dr. Frank Bannor, has emphasized the nuanced nature and significance of Ghana’s debt profile discussion spanning from 2009 to 2023.

He underscored notable trends in Ghana’s debt trajectory, highlighting a substantial surge from $8.07 billion in 2008 to $29.2 billion by the end of 2016.

During the period between 2009 and 2016 under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, Ghana’s debt stock experienced an average annual increase of 32.75%.

Conversely, the trajectory under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, from 2017 onwards, witnessed a comparatively modest addition to Ghana’s debt stock, averaging about 10.68% annually.

Mr Bannor noted that this lower rate, compared to the previous administration, reflects superior economic management by the NPP, despite facing global economic challenges.

He elaborated on fiscal deficits as a crucial indicator of government financial management. Fiscal consolidation periods were highlighted, along with challenges such as the significant deficit in 2012 under the NDC, attributed to heightened spending during an election year.

This fiscal imbalance led to prolonged repercussions, including consecutive years of double-digit deficits from 2013 to 2014, ultimately prompting the government to seek assistance through an IMF extended credit program in 2015.

In contrast, the NPP’s performance showcased rare instances of double-digit deficits, with only one occurrence recorded in 2020 amidst the global upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This favorable fiscal track record underscores the NPP’s commitment to prudent financial management.

Furthermore, the analysis delved into the utilization of borrowed funds by the NPP government, highlighting expenditure trends from 2017 to 2023.

Mr Bannor emphasized a prudent fiscal policy prioritizing investments aimed at generating long-term benefits for future generations.

“Furthermore, our discussion delved into fiscal deficits as a pivotal measure of government financial management. We highlighted how periods of fiscal consolidation were interspersed with challenges, notably the significant deficit experienced in 2012 under the NDC, primarily attributed to heightened spending during an election year. Regrettably, Ghana grappled with prolonged repercussions from this fiscal imbalance, enduring consecutive years of doubledigit deficits from 2013 to 2014. The persistent fiscal challenges ultimately
compelled the government to seek assistance through an IMF extended credit
    program in 2015.

“In contrast, when assessing the NPP’s performance, it’s noteworthy that doubledigit deficits were rare occurrences, with only one instance recorded in 2020 amid
the global upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This comparatively favourable fiscal track record underscores the NPP’s commitment to prudent financial management. More so, the analysis delves into the use of borrowed funds by the  NPP government, making clear its expenditure trends from 2017 to 2023. At DI, we firmly advocate for a prudent fiscal policy that prioritizes investments geared towards generating long-term benefits for future generations. Despite misconceptions, it is important to highlight that these funds have been deployed judiciously, with tangible evidence validating their allocation.
From the analysis, substantial sums have been allocated to various sectors, including the energy sector and infrastructure development. Notable expenditures include payments to independent power producers, construction of interchanges, road projects, railway expansion, construction of mini harbours and fishing landing sites, and investment in the healthcare sector through ambulance procurement,” he said

Contrary to misconceptions, he stressed that these funds have been deployed judiciously, with tangible evidence validating their allocation.

Key sectors benefiting from these investments include energy, infrastructure development, construction of interchanges, road projects, railway expansion, mini harbors, fishing landing sites, and healthcare through ambulance procurement.

Mr Bannor emphasized that these investments signify a strategic approach to utilizing funds for developmental projects aimed at enhancing economic growth and societal well-being.

His press conference coincides with criticisms from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Former President John Dramani Mahama, accusing the NPP administration of excessive borrowing without tangible projects to show for it.

  • ECG, GRIDCo and VRA operations are being disrupted by political influence – Kwame Jantuah

ECG, GRIDCo and VRA operations are being disrupted by political influence – Kwame Jantuah

Energy expert, Kwame Jantuah has asserted that the primary obstacle hindering the effective performance of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the Volta River Authority (VRA) is political interference.

He argued that political appointees within these institutions should step aside to allow technical experts to carry out their duties effectively.

Mr Jantuah’s comments come in response to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s call to diversify GRIDCo, ECG, and VRA. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II believes that privatizing these entities will enhance their efficiency.

During the commissioning of a 430-kilometer natural gas pipeline by Genser Energy in Kumasi on April 17, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the importance of government involving the private sector in establishing and managing companies.

“VRA and others are all government establishments, let’s give it out and diversify them into the private sector and get more money there and get the right people to do it. GRIDCo and others let’s give them the money and get the qualified people, diverse government from it and let them work. Electricity Company is in a situation where we don’t know, but that also must be diversified and given to the private sector.

“Why are we still holding on when we don’t have the money? We’re not able to collect all the taxes we want, we’re going to IMF and all those for money. We’re hanging onto industries we cannot maintain and run.”

He added “It’s about time we face reality and decide on what government should be doing and what the private sector should be doing. This is a testimony of the private sector, and they were able to attract investors.”

He urged the government to privatize VRA and other state-owned enterprises to attract more investment and create employment opportunities.

Mr Jantuah, speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, questioned the feasibility of entrusting these critical sectors to the private sector. He raised concerns about whether banks could raise the necessary funds and highlighted potential issues such as capital flight.

Furthermore, Jantuah underscored the importance of having technical experts manage technical institutions to ensure continuity and effectiveness, advocating for a reduction in political interference.

He pointed out that the politicization of institutions such as the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), ECG, and GRIDCo is detrimental to their operations.

“Does the private sector have the wherewithal to do this? Even if you go to the banks, can banks raise the money? I remember when we discovered oil we tried to syndicate banks to raise money for exploration, were we able to do it? Let us be honest, I respect Otumfuo highly, he is my relative and I respect him but can we do it? Can we trust the privatise sector? Isn’t it capital flight?

“PDS, when they came, what happened? The internationals that come to Ghana to work, do they not change the money into their currencies and take it away,? Isn’t it our local forex that they change the money away?

“We have to be sure that we have streamlined our laws, you need technical people to run technical institutions so that when the government changes those technical people are still there this issue about the president nominating everybody, that is where you get the politics in there. This PURC, ECG GRDICO thing, it is politics.”

You can’t break the 8 with this poor governance – NPP supporter tells Akufo-Addo

A staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region has delivered a message to president Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to the media, she underscored that the current state of governance does not align with the standards necessary to achieve the party’s ambitious “Break the 8” agenda.

She expressed doubt regarding the party’s prospects in the 2024 elections, attributing it to its failure to uphold its promises to the Ghanaian populace.

In her remarks, she revealed her significant investment of time and effort in rallying support for the NPP during past elections.

“We can’t talk. We have been disappointed. Break the 8, we won’t break any 8. NPP has disappointed us. People are suffering. Those who are supporting Bawumia are losers,” she added.

Moreover, she lamented that those she had persuaded to vote for the ruling government had now become adversaries.

Additionally, she extended sympathy to individuals who persist in campaigning for the party, despite the ongoing challenges and hardships faced by the populace.

  • Ghana on track to reach 8% single-digit inflation rate by 2025 – IMF

Ghana on track to reach 8% single-digit inflation rate by 2025 – IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) foresees Ghana ending 2025 with single-digit inflation, estimating it at 8%, in line with the government’s objectives.

Ghana aims to reduce its end-year inflation from 23% to 15% in 2024, further plummeting to single digits by 2025.

Although Ghana last achieved single-digit inflation in 2021, subsequent years witnessed a drastic rise, hitting a 22-year high of 54.1% despite a targeted rate of 31.9%.

However, the IMF’s World Economic Outlook Report at the ongoing IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings paints a promising picture.

This 8% projection credits the robust measures and progress achieved under the IMF program.

The Bank of Ghana commits to staying within its 2024 end-year target band of 15%, plus or minus two percent, while expecting the disinflation trend to persist, mitigating underlying inflation risks through stringent monetary policies.

Furthermore, the IMF predicts a robust 4.4% growth for Ghana in 2025, a marked improvement from the 2.8% forecast for 2024. Nevertheless, it anticipates a -2.2% decline in Ghana’s current account balance, reflecting trade and financial activities.

Despite this setback, the IMF maintains an optimistic outlook, expecting a substantial economic rebound for Ghana in the coming years.

  • 40% of global labor force will be affected by Artificial Intelligence – IMF

40% of global labor force will be affected by Artificial Intelligence – IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecasted that the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact 40 percent of the global workforce.

While AI has demonstrated improvements in productivity, it is poised to displace numerous jobs in the foreseeable future.

Speaking at the sidelines of the 2024 IMF-World Bank Spring meeting in Washington DC, Managing Director of the Fund, Kristalina Georgieva emphasized the permanent presence of AI.

She cited an IMF study revealing that AI’s influence could extend to 40 percent of jobs worldwide, with advanced economies potentially facing a 60 percent impact.

Georgieva highlighted the dual nature of AI, stating it could enhance worker productivity while simultaneously posing a threat to employment. She stressed the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, skills development, and robust social safety nets to shape the pace of AI adoption and its ramifications on productivity.

Furthermore, the IMF’s January report outlined potential ramifications on income and wealth inequality within countries due to AI.

It posited that AI might lead to polarization within income brackets, benefiting workers adept at leveraging AI while leaving others behind.

The report suggested that younger workers might find it easier to capitalize on AI opportunities, while older workers might face challenges in adaptation.

Additionally, the report noted that AI’s impact on labor income hinges on its complementarity with high-income workers.

If AI significantly complements higher-income workers, it could disproportionately increase their labor income and favor high earners. This scenario, coupled with gains in productivity from AI adoption boosting capital returns, could exacerbate inequality.

In light of these findings, the IMF stressed the need for proactive policymaking to mitigate the potential exacerbation of inequality by AI.

It advocated for establishing comprehensive social safety nets and offering retraining programs for vulnerable workers to ensure an inclusive AI transition that safeguards livelihoods and curbs inequality.

“A recent IMF study shows that artificial intelligence could affect up to 40 percent of jobs across the world and 60 percent in advanced economies.

“It could enhance workers’ productivity but also threatens some jobs. Investing in digital infrastructure and skills, as well as in strong social safety nets will determine the pace of AI adoption and its impact on productivity.”

The IMF in January this year also predicted that “AI could also affect income and wealth inequality within countries. We may see polarization within income brackets, with workers who can harness AI seeing an increase in their productivity and wages—and those who cannot falling behind. Research shows that AI can help less experienced workers enhance their productivity more quickly. Younger workers may find it easier to exploit opportunities, while older workers could struggle to adapt.

“The effect on labour income will largely depend on the extent to which AI will complement high-income workers. If AI significantly complements higher-income workers, it may lead to a disproportionate increase in their labour income. Moreover, gains in productivity from firms that adopt AI will likely boost capital returns, which may also favour high earners. Both of these phenomena could exacerbate inequality.

“In most scenarios, AI will likely worsen overall inequality, a troubling trend that policymakers must proactively address to prevent the technology from further stoking social tensions. It is crucial for countries to establish comprehensive social safety nets and offer retraining programs for vulnerable workers. In doing so, we can make the AI transition more inclusive, protecting livelihoods and curbing inequality.”

  • Thank you for your patience – Akufo-Addo commends Ghanaians amid dumsor

Thank you for your patience – Akufo-Addo commends Ghanaians amid dumsor

President Akufo-Addo has publicly acknowledged the recent challenges in power supply, reassuring the nation of the government’s firm commitment to resolving these issues.

He expressed gratitude for the patience shown by Ghanaians during the recent power outages and reiterated ongoing efforts to address the challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, April 17, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the difficulties faced not only by the people of Ashanti but also by citizens across the nation.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, has cautioned against politicizing electricity issues and emphasized the universal need for reliable power supply regardless of political affiliations.

“It is useless when propaganda is what people want to embark upon. I thought when it comes to electricity or power generation, I said and I will repeat it, it doesn’t have party colours. Everybody in Ghana needs electricity. And therefore when there is an undertaking to build on the power base of this nation and people want to pooh-pooh it, it doesn’t accord with common sense. What kind of government do you want to come and inherit? A government that will not have the use of electricity?

“I don’t know our sense of governance. Our sense of governance is that Ghana should be the ultimate beneficiary. If it is NPP, fine. If it is NDC, that is what it should be. But when it is not coming from your government and you want to undermine it, it leaves much to be desired.”

  • Government is committed to completing Saglemi Housing Project – Oppong-Nkrumah

Government is committed to completing Saglemi Housing Project – Oppong-Nkrumah

Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to finishing the Saglemi Housing Project.

Initiated in 2012, the project has faced substantial delays primarily due to government concerns over the contract amount.

Speaking with Bernard Avle on the Point of View on Citi TV, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the government’s readiness to explore partnerships with potential investors to ensure the project’s successful completion and utilization.

“The buildings and technical expressions are at various stages of completion; some are at the foundation level…and the money is finished. Now as it sits, the state is of the view that it should not be left to rot. That is why the President [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] has asked that we go through a process to identify a private investor and or private investors who have technical and financial competencies to help us finish it and to operationalise it.”

When questioned about the government’s current focus on reviving the Saglemi Housing Project after it was abandoned in 2017, Oppong Nkrumah explained, “Minister Samuel Atta Akyea commissioned the evaluation, which then determined that we need about a $100 million to complete it.

“It was based on his report that prosecution was occasioned somewhere around I think 2021, if my timelines are correct. Minister Asenso Boakye is the one who came to cabinet requesting for funding to continue the project.

“And cabinet did the considerations, went through all the options and said after spending $200m on this, the state couldn’t afford to spend anymore, especially at that time of the beginning of our economic challenges. And so, the decision was made to look for private interest.”

He noted that various stages of construction have been reached, with some buildings only at the foundation level and funding depleted.

In response, President Akufo-Addo has instructed a process to identify private investors with the technical and financial capabilities to complete and operationalize the project.

Regarding the government’s renewed focus on the Saglemi Housing Project, Oppong Nkrumah explained that Minister Samuel Atta Akyea’s evaluation determined a need for approximately $100 million to finish it.

This evaluation led to legal actions in 2021, and Minister Asenso Boakye subsequently sought funding from the cabinet to resume the project.

However, considering the state’s economic challenges, cabinet decided against further state funding, opting instead to seek private investment.

While acknowledging that progress should have been made earlier, Oppong- Nkrumah assured transparency in their operations going forward.

He expressed optimism that despite delays, the project’s revival through the current Request for Proposal (RFP) process, coupled with enhanced transparency, is a positive step forward.

Lifeless body of woman found at Ekumfi beach

On Wednesday, the body of a woman, believed to be in her early 30s, was discovered at Ekumfi Ekumpoano beach in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region.

Disturbingly, certain parts of her body, such as her head, genitalia, and intestines, had been forcibly removed, indicating a gruesome act of violence.

Residents suspect that she was murdered and dismembered by her attackers before her body was discarded into the sea.

Although her identity was unclear due to her decomposing body, the locals think she might have been a student.

Prior to the body being handled, the town’s elders offered libations and other sacrifices.

The body was then taken to the mortuary for identification, preservation, and autopsy by police and NDO representatives.

The public is being urged by the police and locals to assist in identifying the deceased person’s family.
