The Ghanaian doctor, Dr Wiafe Akenteng, who is saving lives of kidney patients with herbs

Around 850 million people worldwide suffer from kidney disease, predominantly in low-income and lower-middle-income countries where financial barriers restrict access to necessary diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Over time, research has shown that while Chronic Kidney Disease remains incurable, it can be managed with pharmaceuticals and dialysis machines, often for a patient’s entire lifespan.

In contrast to conventional methods, a Ghanaian herbal doctor, Dr. Wiafe Akenteng, and founder of the Natural Way Herbal Clinic, has made significant strides since 2012.

He has successfully treated over 3,000 kidney disease patients using solely natural remedies.

Dr. Akenteng’s motivation stems from personal experiences witnessing the devastating effects of kidney disease on friends and family.

Recognizing limitations in conventional medical approaches, he undertook extensive research and developed a blend of approximately 32 natural medicines to achieve patient recovery.

Dr. Akenteng challenges misconceptions surrounding kidney disease treatment, advocating for natural remedies over reliance on pharmaceuticals. He emphasizes that conditions like Hepatitis B can be effectively addressed through scientifically-backed natural solutions.

Offering hope to many, Dr. Akenteng provides treatment at significantly lower costs compared to traditional methods. Some patients experience remarkable recovery within days, a feat conventional approaches cannot achieve.

Despite his success, skepticism remains among some kidney patients, often due to cautionary advice from conventional medical practitioners.

Dr. Akenteng urged government intervention to expand access to affordable care, particularly for life-threatening conditions like tuberculosis and kidney disease.

He proposed sponsorship under the National Health Insurance Scheme as a viable solution to alleviate financial burdens and save lives.

In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Akenteng has received prestigious awards, including an honor from George Fox University in Newberg, OR, USA, in 2021. He has also been recommended by reputable award governing bodies like the Rectitude International Mission (RIM) and World Diplomatic Federation (WODIF) to the university’s governing Council.

Inflation may remain high this year due to rise in commodities – World Bank warns

The World Bank projects energy and other commodity prices to become significant deflationary factors in the coming years, posing challenges for central banks aiming to implement interest rate reductions.

In a recent report, the multilateral lender highlighted the stabilization of commodity prices after a substantial decline observed over the past two years.

This stabilization is attributed to tightening supplies due to geopolitical tensions and increased demand for industrial metals and those utilized in the energy transition.

According to Financial Times News, global commodity prices experienced a notable decrease of 40% between mid-2022 and mid-2023, impacting commodities such as oil, gas, and wheat.

Consequently, global inflation saw a reduction of approximately 2 percentage points during this period. However, over the past year, prices have plateaued, putting an end to this deflationary pressure.

Indermit Gill, Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank Group, noted, “Global inflation remains undefeated,” said Indermit Gill, World Bank Group’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President. “A key force for disinflation — falling commodity prices — has essentially hit a wall. That means interest rates could remain higher than currently expected this year and next.
“The world is at a vulnerable moment: a major energy shock could undermine much of the progress in reducing inflation over the past two years”.

The bank forecasts that commodity prices will fall by as little as 3% in 2024 and 4% in 2025.

However, this slowdown in price falls will do little to quell above-target inflation and may pose challenges for central banks wanting to bring down interest rates.

The World Bank Group’s deputy chief economist, Ayhan Kose, highlighted the significance of high commodity prices amid slowing global growth, marking the start of “a new era,” comparable to the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.

While most commodity prices are expected to decrease at a slower pace, the bank forecasts a rise in the copper rate due to the energy transition’s demand for the metal, essential for manufacturing electric cars and upgrading the electricity grid.

Additionally, tensions in the Middle East are forecasted to push up the cost of gold and oil. The bank expects the price of Brent crude oil to average $84 a barrel this year and $79 in 2025.

However, if the conflict in the Middle East escalates, oil prices could surpass $100 per barrel this year, leading to a significant global inflationary impact.

We saved US$57.9m from the procurement of new devices in 2020 – EC clarifies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims of spending US$150 million on new Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and Biometric Voters Registration Kits (BVRs) in 2020, clarifying the actual expenditure.

In a statement signed by Mr. Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, the EC states that it disbursed US$68,661,912.67 for 74,500 BVDs, 8,500 BVRs, along with a new data center and data recovery center.

The EC emphasized that the current administration saved US$57,918,270 compared to the pricing proposed by the previous administration for similar devices.

“Please take note that the cost of refurbishing one BVR kit as approved in 2018 was $3,565 while the cost of a new BVR Kit purchased by the current administration in 2020 was $3,423.38. As Ghanaians, would we have preferred to refurbish old BYRs at a unit cost higher than a new one?” the Commission asked.

The statement highlights the cost comparison between refurbishing old BVR kits at US$3,565 each, approved in 2018, versus purchasing new ones at US$3,423.38 each in 2020, questioning which option Ghanaians would prefer.

Regarding the data center and biometric system upgrade, the EC notes that the previous administration allocated US$15 million, while the current administration spent US$6,161,869.69, saving US$9 million.

The Commission urged the public to disregard reports alleging that it expended $150 million on BYDs and BVRs in 2020.

A self-confessed killer has revealed how he carried out the murder of three individuals at the behest of a chop bar operator.

A video circulating on social media, purportedly showing Richard Tetteh, being interrogated, depicts him seated in an office, handcuffed, clad in worn-out shorts and a T-shirt, fielding questions.

  • Global food prices to decrease significantly in 2025 – World Bank

Global food prices to decrease significantly in 2025 – World Bank

The World Bank has recently published its April 2024 Commodity Outlook Report, projecting a significant decrease in global food prices for 2024, with an estimated 6 per cent decline, followed by an additional 4 per cent drop in 2025.

This reduction is primarily attributed to lower prices for grains, oils, and meals, while other food categories are anticipated to experience price increases in 2024.

However, 2025 is anticipated to witness widespread decreases in food prices.

The grains price index is expected to decrease by 11 per cent in 2024, fueled by increased global grain supplies. Wheat prices are predicted to fall by 15 per cent in 2024 due to heightened production, with an additional 2 per cent decline projected for 2025.

These forecasts coincide with intense export competition and slightly higher production, counterbalanced by somewhat increased consumption and the lowest end-of-season stocks-to-use ratio in eight years.

Global maize production is poised to reach a record high in the 2023–24 seasons, while global rice production in 2023-24 remains steady, accompanied by a decrease in the stock-to-use ratio to its lowest level in three years.

Rice prices are expected to climb by 8 per cent (year-on-year) in 2024 due to tight global markets and export restrictions imposed by India.

In the Ghanaian context, a reversal in food disinflation is evident as the food inflation rate surged from 27.0 per cent in February to 29.6 per cent in March 2024.

This uptick in food inflation occurs amidst persistent concerns about food insecurity in the sub-Saharan region.

As global food prices are projected to decline, it remains to be observed how these developments will impact Ghana’s food market and the overall food security situation in the country.

Prof Jane Naana’s track record lacks significant achievements – Eric Twum

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, Eric Twum, has asserted that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s running mate, lacks notable achievements from her tenure as Minister of Education.

Speaking to Selorm Adonoo on The Big Issue aired on Citi FM and Citi TV, Twum claimed that the NDC is averse to subjecting Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to scrutiny due to her perceived lack of accomplishments in political leadership.

He contended that a comparison of her time as Minister of Education with the current state of education would reveal minimal progress that stakeholders can attest to.

“Given the political platform, she has been a Minister of Education before and has also been chosen as a running mate before, so there is a lot to interrogate but the challenge I have with the NDC is that it is almost as if she is supposed to be absolved from and taken out of any kind of interrogation.

“You saw her stewardship as a Minister of Education and what is it that she can point out as her record? If you do a comparative analysis of education under her watch and now, the stakeholders will attest to a different educational system as stakeholders.”

Ghana records approximately 9,900 cases of snakebites annually – GHS

Between 2015 and 2020, Ghana documented 59,600 snakebite incidents, averaging 9,900 cases annually, marking the first comprehensive data collection on the matter.

The predominance of snakebites was notably higher in males, averaging 5,600 cases yearly, compared to females at 4,300 cases per year.

At the launch of the African Snakebite Alliance (ASA) Ghana, the Programme Manager of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), Dr. Joseph Opare, at the Ghana Health Service, disclosed these figures.

Snakebite, classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) among Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), poses a substantial health risk in Ghana, a nation endemic to 14 such diseases.

Despite Ghana’s absence of reported terrorist attacks, snakebite envenoming is identified as more lethal than many other NTDs.

Globally, an estimated 5.4 million snakebites occur annually, resulting in 81,410 to 137,880 deaths and numerous permanent disabilities.

Dr. Opare emphasized the necessity for improved surveillance, increased availability of antivenoms, and heightened public awareness to mitigate snakebite-related morbidity and mortality.

The ASA seeks to revolutionize snakebite research by fostering collaboration between international scientific communities and local stakeholders.

Dr. John H. Amuasi, Principal Investigator of the ASA, highlighted the urgent need for high-quality research to inform policy and practice in reducing snakebite fatalities and disabilities.

The ASA aims to support African nations in integrating research evidence into policy decisions and enhancing the continent’s capacity for snakebite research.

Dr. Amuasi stressed the importance of translating research findings into actionable policies and providing grants to facilitate further snakebite research.

Dr. Angela Ackon of the WHO Ghana Office emphasized the limited availability of antivenoms in regions most affected by snakebites due to challenges in venom preparation and regulatory capacity.

To address this issue, the WHO is evaluating alternative antivenoms that meet international standards to facilitate global procurement.

Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Presidential Advisor on Health, highlighted the seasonal nature of snakebite incidents, which peak during the major and minor farming seasons.

Dr. Hafez Adam Taher, Acting Director of the Technical Coordination Directorate at the Ministry of Health, underscored the urgent need to address snakebite as a neglected health issue, despite its coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Entrepreneurs must equip themselves with IP skills to stay competitive – Manager of SN Anku

Global Manager of SN Anku IP Firm, Sarah Norkor Anku, has emphasized the importance of integrating Intellectual Property (IP) into businesses to empower entrepreneurs in enhancing, safeguarding, and monetizing their ventures.

Speaking at a media briefing during a workshop commemorating World Intellectual Property Day, Mr Anku urged Ghanaian entrepreneurs to leverage the benefits of IP, citing its successful implementation in other countries.

“What we have done is partner with OAWLI, a women’s entrepreneurship hub, to have a workshop with the women and educate them on how to use the IP to boost their businesses and to benefit from their intellectual property assets. There is a gap in terms of knowledge and we hope that with this workshop, we will get more people interested in using the IP system to their benefit.

“It has worked in other jurisdictions, so we should be able to use that in Ghana and Africa to help our own businesses as well, especially the women’s businesses and the young women entrepreneurs. We want to secure their creativity; we want them to know what they can use their creativity for and how they can monetise what they have in order to help them or to take care of their families,” she said.

Highlighting the potential impact on women and young entrepreneurs, Mr Anku stressed the need to secure their creative efforts, enable them to realize the value of their innovations, and generate income to support their families.

Anku urged all business owners to comply with Ghana’s legal requirements by registering their businesses.

World Intellectual Property Day, observed annually on April 26, served as the backdrop for the workshop organized by SN Anku IP Firm in collaboration with the Oxford Africa Women Leadership Institute (OAWLI).

The event aimed to enlighten entrepreneurs on the significance of integrating IP strategies into their business operations.

Govt’s dependence on IMF, World Bank reveals lack of policy decisiveness – Analyst

An economy and policy analyst, Enoch Okomfo Okonah, has expressed concern over Ghana’s heavy reliance on Bretton Woods institutions for managing the Ghana Cedi, citing a lack of clear policy direction to address the nation’s economic challenges.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani regarding the state of the economy, Okonah advocates for more assertive economic policies to bolster the Ghana Cedi, rather than depending excessively on foreign aid and borrowing.

As the Chief Executive Officer of DUMAT Africa, a Sunyani-based economic policy think-tank, Mr Okonah underscores the need for targeted tax reforms aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing imports.

He suggested that the government should prioritize subsidizing imports and foster a resilient local economy that favors private sector growth to tackle fiscal challenges effectively.

This approach, he believes, would stabilize the economy, drive rapid economic expansion, and ultimately fortify the Ghana Cedi to facilitate wealth creation and poverty alleviation.

Highlighting the importance of a robust local economy in inspiring investor confidence, Mr Okonah stressed the significance of attracting investments across various sectors.

With the IMF deal finalized, Mr Okonah urged for sound economic policies to address the soaring market prices of food, commodities, building materials, petroleum products, and essential services.

He emphasized the need for policies that aim to build a better society and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians.

Wontumi needs someone to interpret Prof Jane Naana’s kind of English – Central Regional NDC Chairman

The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, has ridiculed the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).

Prof. Asiedu alleged that some NPP supporters claim Chairman Wontumi would require an interpreter to comprehend the English used by Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang during her unveiling at UPSA.

During an interview on Accra-based Onua FM with Nana Yaa Brefo, he remarked, “If you look at the kind of English that was spoken by our mother, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, at UPSA during her unveiling, I wonder how Chairman Wontumi would understand.

“Even some NPP sympathizers are saying that Chairman Wontumi would need an interpreter to make him understand the kind of English that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang used. Because the kind of English she used was tough, and when Chairman Wontumi reads it, maybe he might not read it well and it might sound different to him.

“And you are telling me to go and argue; at this tangent with Chairman Wontumi, he doesn’t understand this, so he’s quite funny.”

I didn’t respond to Wontumi’s attacks because I was focused on winning Assin North election – NDC Chairman

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of St. Andrews Group of Companies, Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, has disclosed his unwavering focus during the Assin North by-elections in 2023, explaining why he refused to be distracted by allegations and insults hurled by Chairman Wontumi.

As the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Asiedu shared in an interview on Onua FM, as reported by MyNewsGh.com, that despite numerous calls from media outlets to respond to Chairman Wontumi’s accusations, he chose to remain silent.

During the Assin North election, Chairman Wontumi made several allegations against Prof. Asiedu and repeatedly mentioned his name in public forums.

However, Prof. Asiedu refrained from engaging in any verbal exchanges, staying focused on securing victory for the NDC in Assin North.

Reflecting on the campaign, Prof. Asiedu recalled receiving calls on the final day urging him to confront Chairman Wontumi.

However, he resisted the temptation, mindful that engaging in such exchanges could lead to a derogatory discourse.

Instead, Prof. Asiedu maintained his composure and concentrated on the task at hand – ensuring success in the Assin North election.

Ultimately, his steadfast focus and dedication contributed to the NDC’s triumph in the by-election.

“You remember during the Assin North election, Chairman Wontumi made a lot of allegations, and I was called by several media houses to respond, but I never made any remarks.

“When he came to Assin North, he was all over mentioning my name, but I never responded to any of his allegations or insults because my mind was focusing on how to win the Assin North election, and I delivered.”

He added, “I remember on the last day of our campaign at Assin North, I had calls to banter Chairman Wontumi, but I desisted because the level of discourse I’ll have with him might be disgraceful.”

Bad move, you are going to waste money – Netizens advise Stephen Appiah to forfeit Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary bid

Some Ghanaians on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), have criticized Stephen Appiah’s decision to run for the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in the 2024 elections, calling it a ‘misuse of funds’.

The former captain of the Black Stars is reportedly gearing up to contest the constituency seat in the upcoming general elections.

While Appiah’s political aspirations surprised some Ghanaians, others have dismissed his chances of success, deeming it a squandering of his resources.

According to Fiifi Tackie, spokesperson for the Ayew family, the former Juventus star intends to vie for the seat as an independent Parliamentary candidate.

“Stephen Appiah to contest Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency as an independent Parliamentary candidate,” he wrote via X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Go on your knees and pray, I see someone dying – Prophet Nigel Gaisie tells Asempa FM Staff

Prophet Nigel Gaisie has once again turned his prophetic attention toward one of Accra’s prominent media organizations.

The General Overseer of the Prophetic Hill Chapel has issued a call for urgent action to avert the looming threat of death hovering over this specific media establishment.

In a video shared on his Facebook page, Prophet Nigel emphasized the seriousness of the situation, drawing parallels to past prophecies that have come to fruition.

He singled out a radio station within the media conglomerate, which has tragically experienced death incidents before, as the primary target of his concern.

Addressing Multimedia directly, Prophet Nigel described how he was led by divine revelation to the studio of Asempa FM, where he witnessed ominous signs.

“This message goes to Multimedia. The Lord opened my eyes and I went straight into the Asempa FM studio. When I got there, I saw that the console had been marked with red cloth. I heard in my spirit as a major prophet of God that the calamity that happened some time ago will be repeated. This is an alert to Multimedia. It’s better to believe and live than to disbelieve and be sorry. Don’t forget that I have prophesied deaths about your establishment for about two to three times and they all came to pass.

He urged the organization to heed his warning, underscoring the potential consequences of ignoring divine guidance.

Prophet Nigel provided specific timelines for when the prophesied incident may occur and offered practical measures to mitigate the threat.

He urged Multimedia and believers in prophecy to take his message seriously, cautioning against skepticism and urging proactive steps such as prayer and fasting.

“When we prophesy, some people who are not deep in the spirit will come and discredit it here and there but I tell you, if you play with this, by August or September, Ghana will not hear good news. I plead with you to pick it up, Asempa FM.

“I’ll encourage Multimedia and anyone that believes in prophecies to go on their knees and pray. They should embark on a 3-day fast and after that, they should look for any man of God to pray for them. Look for any alter and sow a seed. I have been praying for you and I have consulted one or two pastors as well.”

This latest prophecy from Prophet Nigel follows recent events surrounding his prediction regarding the late Deputy Finance Minister, Mr. John Kumah, and underscores the gravity of the spiritual guidance he claims to receive.

  • Mahama wouldn’t have been NDC’s flagbearer if Akufo-Addo excelled – Martin Kpebu

Mahama wouldn’t have been NDC’s flagbearer if Akufo-Addo excelled – Martin Kpebu

The poor performance of President Akufo-Addo has led to the resurgence of former President John Dramani Mahama’s political career, according to private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu.

During a discussion on TV3’s Key Point on April 27, Kpebu expressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) likely reinstated Mahama as their flagbearer due to Akufo-Addo’s underwhelming tenure.

Mr Kpebu emphasized that if Akufo-Addo had excelled in governance, Mahama would not have been reconsidered for the position.

Regarding the Presidency’s response to the KPMG audit report on the GRA-SML deal, Kpebu stated, “you think if Akufo-Addo had performed well with press freedom, and turned the economy, the NDC would have brought JM? No. So Akufo-Addo has single-handedly resurrected Mahama.

“If we have to force him to release the KPMG report, then it means we have retrogressed under Akufo-Addo.”

He highlighted that Akufo-Addo’s administration’s performance prompted Mahama’s reinstatement.

The KPMG audit unveiled discrepancies in the GRA-SML agreement, with no technical needs assessment conducted before engaging SML.

The Presidency issued directives in response to the report’s findings, including possible termination of certain services and renegotiation of contracts.

The investigation by The Fourth Estate exposed false claims made by SML, which allegedly received payments based on unsubstantiated assertions.

Upon confrontation with these findings, SML removed significant services claimed on its website.

These developments underscore the political ramifications of governance performance and the importance of accountability in contractual agreements.

Report reveals 43% spike in cost of jollof rice preparation for 5 over last 6 months

A research and communications consulting firm, SBM Intelligence, has drawn attention to a notable uptick in the expenses associated with preparing jollof rice for a family of five in Ghana.

According to the SBM Jollof Index report, spanning from September 2023 to February 2024, the cost of jollof rice ingredients for a family of five surged from GH₵277.75 to GH₵397.25, marking a 43% increase.

Titled ‘Crisis at the Table,’ the report meticulously outlines this price escalation, highlighting October 2023 as the month with the most substantial month-on-month increase, reaching 25.7%.

Despite a minor decline in November, prices swiftly resumed their upward trajectory, peaking in February 2024.

The report attributes this surge to various factors, including currency fluctuations, heightened input expenses, and supply-demand imbalances.

“The price surge persisted in February 2024, with the cost of jollof rice ingredients reaching GH₵397.25, a further 3.8% increase from January. This marks the highest price point in the last six months and underscores the growing affordability challenges Ghanaian households face,” the report highlighted.

In February 2024, the cost of Jollof rice ingredients further rose to GH₵397.25, a 3.8% increase from January, marking the highest price point in six months and accentuating the affordability challenges faced by Ghanaian households.

“This quarter’s data shows a departure from the previous quarter’s trend, indicating a significant increase in food costs and a subsequent upward trajectory. Notably, Kumasi experienced a more rapid increase than Accra, with the gap between the two cities narrowing over six months,” the report added.

A comparison between Accra and Kumasi revealed that while both cities experienced price hikes, Kumasi witnessed a more pronounced increase in Jollof rice costs, narrowing the gap between the two cities over six months.

Despite a reduction in Ghana’s food inflation from 44.8% in October 2023 to 29.6% in March 2024, the persistent issue of escalating food expenses remains a significant concern for the country.

NPP may lose 2024 elections due to ongoing dumsor – Political Analyst

A political and social analyst who also lectures at the University of Cape Coast, Jonathan Asante Otchere, has forecasted that the current intermittent power outages will have a detrimental impact on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Connect FM’s Kokromotsir Political Program with host Wofa Ato Koomson on Thursday, April 25, Dr. Otchere stressed the significance of energy-related issues in influencing voters’ choices.

He pointed out that in 2016, during the tenure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP capitalized on ‘dumsor’ as a major campaign issue, leading to the defeat of the former.

Dr. Otchere noted that history appears to be repeating itself, using the Akan proverb “Abaa yedi bo Takyi no, ye di bo Baah,” which translates to “The cane used on Takyi is also used on Baah,” to illustrate the situation.

He emphasized that the ongoing energy crisis will be a crucial factor for voters in the upcoming elections and will significantly impact the NPP’s electoral prospects.

Dr. Otchere recounted incidents at the UCC campus where students had to endure uncomfortable heat during exams due to power outages, highlighting the stress it caused.

Additionally, he shared his personal experience of having to sleep in his car due to power outages, stating, “Last week I slept in my car for hours before going home in the night because of ‘dumsor,’ because the kind of heat we are enduring today is unbearable.”

Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere emphasized that voters prioritize factors such as the economy, infrastructure development, high inflation rates, and corruption when casting their votes, and these factors will be evident in the December elections.

Those doubting Prof Jane Naana’s capabilities are jokers – Political Analyst

Political analyst Nana Piesie Anto has criticized those who doubt the contributions of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to the NDC and its presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama’s ticket, labeling them as political jokers.

Anto dismissed perceptions that Opoku-Agyemang added no value to the 2020 presidential election, asserting that such views lack objectivity.

He commended the former education minister for running a robust campaign and making significant contributions to the NDC’s performance, despite their loss in the presidential election.

During an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 86.5 FM, Anto emphasized Opoku-Agyemang’s effectiveness as a politician, highlighting her widespread appeal and dedication to engaging with people across the country.

“She went across the country and had people waiting to listen to her all the time, and in some instances, she met people at 2:00 am.

“I can say on authority that she is formidable. She is solid. She is a decent politician, and people listen to her whenever she speaks. The woman is efficient. We need a new mindset for discussing politics in Ghana.

“We have poor roads and other challenges, and instead of you focusing on ways we can address them, you are worried about this decent woman. People have different ways of doing their politics. We all have our ways of attracting people to follow us.”

Mr Anto praised Opoku-Agyemang’s acceptance speech at her outdoor ceremony, describing it as inspiring for its positive vision for governance, emphasizing unity, teamwork, and effective resource management.

“It contained ways on how best we can govern the country and make it better. She touched on unity and teamwork and how we could, as a people, mobilise ourselves and manage our resources to benefit the people.

“We have natural resources, but we have not developed as a people, and these were some of the things she spoke about and ways she thought we could do it better,” he stressed.

He called for a shift away from politics of insults and advocated for the inclusion of decent individuals in political discourse, stressing the importance of integrity in public office and accountability for those who engage in corruption.

  • Mahama is receiving much attention because Akufo-Addo has failed – Ayariga

Hassan Ayariga, the founder of the All People’s Congress, has asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s failures in office have created the opportunity for former President John Dramani Mahama to seek a comeback.

During an interview on the Class Morning Show with Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang on Friday, April 26, 2024, Ayariga stated that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had dashed the hopes of Ghanaians before he was elected.

Reflecting on the country’s current state after eight years, Mr Ayariga questioned whether President Akufo-Addo’s performance surpassed that of his predecessor.

“People gave him so much hope, and when we were saying that he would not be the best candidate, Ghanaians didn’t believe us and gave President Nana Akufo-Addo the mandate.

“Eight years down the lane, where are we as a country? Can we say that President Akufo-Addo has performed better than the former president? The answer is still no, even though I’m not supporting the former president,” Ayariga added.

Ayariga suggested that Mahama’s decision to contest in the 2024 general elections was driven by Akufo-Addo‘s abysmal governance.

Regarding economic indicators such as inflation and the strength of the Cedi, Ayariga argued that Akufo-Addo’s administration falls short of Mahama’s performance.

Excessive political interference impeding operations of SSNIT – Labour Analyst

Labour Analyst, Seth Abloso has voiced concerns regarding the ongoing debate surrounding the sustainability of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), citing significant political interference in its management.

Speaking with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show, Abloso stressed, “It means SSNIT has not been managed to the expectation of its membership, and it’s clear. There is too much political interference in the management of SSNIT.”

Mr Abloso pointed to recent events within SSNIT, particularly the sudden removal of the Director-General, suggesting underlying issues.

“Only recently a Director-General was given the marching orders. The tone of the letter that asked him to go home clearly indicates that something was terribly wrong, and that thing will forever haunt him and his credibility.”

Regarding the appointment of a new Director-General, Mr Abloso noted inconsistencies, stating, “We were then told quickly that he has done nothing wrong. But the letter that sent him home, the first paragraph made reference to the appointment letter by the Public Services Commission. But in announcing the replacement, we didn’t see the Public Services Commission involved,” he said.

Furthermore, Abloso criticized the appointment of a Deputy Director-General allegedly associated with past controversial projects.

“They appointed a Deputy Director-General who not long ago was involved in signing papers for a certain AGYAPA project, even while serving as Deputy Director-General and without resigning from SSNIT,” he asserted.

Mr Abloso underscored the negative impact of political interference on SSNIT’s operations, urging vigilance from the labor force.

“You pushed him, a deputy Director-General who not too long ago was signing papers for a certain AGYAPA project even whilst he was Deputy Director-General and hasn’t resigned from SSNIT,” he stated.

“Political interference has been a source of anguish for SSNIT. The labor force should be deeply concerned,” he emphasized.

He also referenced historical concerns over SSNIT’s regulations, mentioning previous audits and recommendations for prosecution.

“These troubling regulations were highlighted in 2021. A forensic audit of SSNIT was commissioned by Yaw Osafo-Maafo, the then Finance Minister, conducted by Deloitte Worldwide Investment and other consultants,” he disclosed.

In conclusion, Abloso stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in SSNIT’s management, urging stakeholders to address the systemic issues affecting the institution.

Ejisu seat likely to be retained by NPP but not on easy grounds – Global InfoAnalytics

Global InfoAnalytics suggests that while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to retain the Ejisu seat, victory may not be straightforward for their candidate, Kwabena Boateng.

The by-election follows the passing of Ejisu’s Member of Parliament, John Ampontuah Kumah, leading to a closely contested race between Kwabena Boateng and former MP for the area, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

Despite the National Democratic Congress (NDC) opting out of the race, the dynamics remain intriguing.

Executive Director and Head of Polls for Global InfoAnalytics, Musah Dankwah, revealed on Citi TV that Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, supported by the NDC, poses a significant threat to the NPP’s candidate.

The latest polling data shows Kwabena Boateng leading narrowly with 50.6% of the votes, while Kwabena Owusu Aduomi trails closely behind at 47.5%.

“The polls are shocking, indeed very shocking, currently, the NPP is leading by a whisker, less than a margin of error, 50.6% lead in the poll. They are not losing the seat but leading by a margin of error. The lead is not comfortable.

“Kwabena Owusu Aduomi 47.5%. This race is too close to call. What we have seen is that the NPP again is divided, about 64% of NPP voters are voting for their own.

“About 34% are voting for Aduomi. Aduomi is getting 66% of the support from floating voters and he’s getting 92% of NDC support, and 95% of other party supporters. The only advantage the NPP has is that they are leading amongst their own, other than that Aduomi is leading across the board.

“It would have been different if Aduomi hadn’t contested, he’s a threat. NDC guys are rallying behind Aduomi and that is proving very deadly,” he is quoted to have said.

The polls reveal a divided NPP electorate, with approximately 64% supporting their candidate, Kwabena Boateng.

Meanwhile, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi enjoys strong backing from floating voters, as well as overwhelming support from NDC loyalists and other party supporters.

The Electoral Commission has set April 30, 2024, for the by-election.

  • I will reclaim all 9 orphan seats in the Northern Region for NDC – Former GCB Bank MD

I will reclaim all 9 orphan seats in the Northern Region for NDC – Former GCB Bank MD

A former Managing Director of the GCB Bank, Ernest Agbesi, is determined to see the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reclaim all parliamentary seats lost in the 2020 elections before he considers his mission accomplished.

He expressed his commitment to ensuring that all nine orphan constituencies in the northern regions of the country realign with the party.

Mr Agbesi elaborated that his focus on campaigning for the NDC in these areas stems from his belief that the unresolved issues contributing to the party’s loss in those seats persist.

To support these efforts, Mr Agbesi has been actively engaging with and assisting the constituencies, including providing motorbikes to aid their mobility.

During a discussion with a community leader in Yendi, Agbesi revealed that one of the reasons the NDC lost several northern seats in the last elections was the lack of basic resources like motorbikes. He highlighted the critical role motorbikes play in the 2024 campaign, particularly in reaching remote polling centers and communities.

Mr Agbesi noted, “In 2020, motorbikes were a very challenging issue for us, but now that we are getting this intervention early, we believe and hope that Election 2020 challenges will not surface in 2024, because of motorbikes”.

The nine constituencies targeted for support include Zabzugu, Chereponi, Gushegu, Bimbilla, Wulensi, Karaga, Yendi, Tatale, and Mion/Sang, all of which currently have MPs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The people in these constituencies are ready for the NDC to return to power and I vow not to rest until I win back all the 9 northern orphan seats for NDC.”

“Before these motorbikes, there were some kinds of polling centers and communities we cannot reach because, we want to go, but how do we get the means. We needed people to do one or two things…

“… so, motorbikes is very crucial in this our election 2024 campaign. And Yendi, for instance, with 66 polling stations in the outskirts, we need to have motorbikes… and it will be a game changer for us because all the places we were not able to go, we will use the motorbikes to go.

Bawumia’s driver’s mate remark is preventing him to name his running mate – Nana Ntow Amirekyi

A former National Organiser of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Desmond Nana Ntow Amirekyi, has pointed out that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is encountering difficulties in selecting a running mate for the 2024 elections due to his statements.

Amirekyi highlighted that Bawumia’s previous remarks have posed challenges in his quest for a suitable partner for the upcoming elections.

He stressed that Bawumia’s statements regarding his role within the government have raised doubts about his willingness to empower his vice president if he were to assume the presidency.

Speaking on a panel discussion on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on April 25, 2024, the former PNC official stated:

“It will be difficult for Bawumia to choose a running mate because of his utterances. If you are a vice president and claim that you were just a vice and as a result, your decisions were not factored in the administration then it means that, when you get the opportunity to become president you won’t also allow your vice to function.

“That is why it has become difficult for him to choose his vice president,” he said.

He added, “His own words mean that his vice won’t be useful in his administration because for him as a vice he was not useful in his administration… he is the same person who said he didn’t support the E-Levy …if not for Dr. Bawumia we didn’t know that if you are a vice president, you don’t have a say in the government.”

“His Excellency Nana Addo, compassionate, visionary and result-oriented Bawumia, they said whether you are rich, whether you are poor, you are a Ghanaian, go to school; everything is free.

“All you do is get your chop box, the gari is not even compulsory because you are being fed three hot meals a day.

“So, if you go you don’t need gari. I have children, not necessarily personal or biological children in Free Senior High, they take gari and return the gari home,” she stated.

Wiredu contrasted the NPP’s performance with that of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), asserting that the NDC’s history of poor governance disqualifies them from reclaiming power.

She reiterated the NPP’s stance that the NDC’s call for a review of the Free Senior High School policy signals their intention to abolish the policy if they come into power.

Renting a room during your pension days will kill you quickly – General Secretary of National Pensioners Association warns

General Secretary of the National Pensioners Association, Stephen Boakye, has advocated for young people to prioritize financial literacy for a secure retirement.

He emphasizes the challenges of retirement and warns of regrettable post-retirement scenarios due to inadequate preparation.

Addressing the MIG Business Forum’s Volume 2 event organized by the Maxwell Investment Group on April 25, 2024, Mr Boakye likens renting during retirement to facing a firing squad, highlighting the stressful dynamics between landlords and tenants at that stage of life.

“Don’t rent a room during your pension days; it will kill you quickly; renting as a retiree is like facing the firing squad because your landlord will be harassing you,” he said.

Mr Boakye lamented the prospect of individuals working for decades only to endure hardship in their retirement years.

He stressed the importance of strategic planning from a young age, urging youth to not only save but also invest wisely for their future financial security.

“Pension has to be enjoyed; you can’t work for over sixty years and come back to suffer; no, that’s not how it is supposed to be.

“Learn how to plan your life as a youth. You will earn money, so take the time to enjoy it, but plan well,” he added.

“So, this program provides us with the opportunities to discuss issues regarding financial literacy and retirement planning.”

“This program provides us with opportunities to discuss financial literacy and retirement planning,” Dr. Amewu noted, stressing the importance of initiatives like the MIG Business Forum in raising awareness and empowering individuals to make informed financial decisions, contributing to overall economic growth and stability.

Dr. Maxwell Ampong, CEO of Maxwell Investment Group, reflects on personal growth and the significance of self-reflection.

He expressed a desire to meet his future self to address missed opportunities and regrets, emphasizing the importance of continuous personal development.

“If I could meet myself 20 years from now to ask myself questions, I would be very sure that there are a lot of things I might not have done. And If I could advise myself backwards in the past 20 years, I would have been a better person than now, and that is what we are trying to do right now,” Dr. Ampong stated.

  • Opuni joined COCOBOD after test on lithovit was completed – CRIG scientist reveals

Opuni joined COCOBOD after test on lithovit was completed – CRIG scientist reveals

The prosecution’s claim that former COCOBOD Chief Executive, Dr. Stephen Opuni instructed CRIG scientists to hasten the testing of fertilizers, particularly lithovit, has been rebutted by a new defense witness, a soil scientist from CRIG.

Court proceedings have unveiled that even prior to Dr. Opuni’s assumption of office, CRIG had completed its evaluation of lithovit foliar fertilizer supplied by Agricult Ghana Limited and had compiled the scientific report on the product.

Jerome Agbesi Dogbatse, who contributed to the preliminary report on lithovit foliar fertilizer, testified before the Accra High Court on April 25, 2024, stating that CRIG concluded its examination of lithovit well before November 2013.

Joining the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) on November 4, 2013, Dogbatse asserted, “I informed the police that the product (lithovit) was tested and finalized before I became part of CRIG.”

Despite Dr. Opuni’s appointment in December 2013, he officially assumed his role as the Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board in January 2014.

“What I told the police was that they showed me a report and asked me that have I seen this report before, and I said yes, I have seen the report before, and then they mentioned that this is the final report on the work on lithovit. then I told them if that is the final report, nobody showed it to me, but what I worked on was the draft report,” the witness said.

“Did you tell the police anything about making comments on any report?” lawyer Benson Nutsukpui, counsel for Seidu Agongo, asked Mr Dogbatse.

The witness replied, “Yes, my Lord, I told them that I made some comments for the attention of the lead author. That is what I meant by review.”

The initial prosecution witness, Dr. Franklin Manu Amoah, alleged during his testimony in July 2018 that Dr. Opuni directed scientists to expedite the testing of fertilizers, including lithovit, upon assuming office.

However, Dr. Francis Baah, who purportedly attended a meeting where this directive was issued, vehemently denied any such occurrence during proceedings on April 17, 2024.

Additionally, Mr. James Kofi Kutsoatsi, also claimed to be present at the alleged meeting, did not join COCOBOD until April 2014, rendering his attendance impossible during the specified timeframe.

Jerome Agbesi Dogbatse further discredited Dr. Amoah’s claim, stating that he did not meet the testing requirements for lithovit fertilizer.

“The difference between them are that the treated seedlings are doing better than the untreated seedlings,” he recalled.

Dogbatse’s testimony aligned with his previous statements to investigative bodies, affirming that the testing had concluded before his tenure at CRIG began.

“It is clear and obvious that there was a calculated attempt to dirty Dr Stephen Opuni with false claims. This is just to besmirch a man with reputable credibility,” a journalist who doesn’t want to be named pointed out.

The defense posits that Dr. Opuni’s alleged involvement seems improbable given the timeline and the presence of a substantive COCOBOD chief executive at the time.

Kasoa: Family members lash out at hospital staff over 17-year-old boy’s death

A group of enraged family members has assaulted staff at the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, Awutu Senya East Constituency, alleging negligence that led to the death of their 17-year-old son.

On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at approximately 10:00 PM, the family brought Nana Adu, who had lost consciousness, to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the boy passed away an hour later.

Upon learning of the boy’s demise, some family members became enraged, vandalizing hospital property, and physically assaulting staff.

The deceased’s father, Daniel Hebibor, accused the medical staff of administering incorrect medication, attributing it to his son’s death.

However, Dr. Apetogbor Dzedegbe, the Medical Superintendent of the Mother and Child Hospital, vehemently denied the allegations, stating that the doctors had done everything possible to save the boy’s life, but he could not be revived.

Meanwhile, the Kasoa District Police Command has apprehended three family members for assaulting hospital staff to aid in the investigation.

Ghana’s energy crisis didn’t start under Kufuor’s administration – Kwesi Pratt Jnr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has shed light on the historical origins of Ghana’s energy crisis, linking it to events that transpired after the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah’s government.

He emphasized that the crisis didn’t emerge during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s tenure, as commonly thought, but rather stemmed from decisions made post-Nkrumah era.

Pratt highlighted the significant influence of a British energy expert whose counsel led to the abandonment of vital energy projects initiated under Nkrumah’s administration.

Despite Soviet experts working on the Bui Dam project, measures like the Bui Dam and mini hydro projects were halted following the British expert’s advice.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on April 24, 2024, Pratt stressed the importance of understanding the history of the energy crisis, noting, “The issue of the history of the energy crisis has come up now, and I think it is important we get the history right. After the 1966 coup against Nkrumah, the government then brought in a British expert, who insisted we didn’t need to expand capacity.”

Expressing regret, Pratt lamented how Ghana missed opportunities due to project abandonment. “So, we stopped the Bui Dam project… The Bui Dam was delayed all this time because of the British expert,” he added.

Pratt elaborated that Nkrumah’s regime had proposed mini hydro projects, also discontinued. Additionally, plans for nuclear power generation, including agreements with the Soviet Union, were scrapped based on the expert’s advice.

“The issue of the history of the energy crisis has come up now, and I think it is important we get the history right. After the 1966 coup against Nkrumah, the government then brought in a British expert, who insisted we didn’t need to expand capacity.”

“At the time, we were considering a nuclear option for power generation and went into an agreement with the Soviet Union that the so-called British energy expert also stopped. That is where our problem began.

“The problems in our energy sector—some think it began in the Kufuor administration; it’s not true. The crisis was already there before it came. It only hit us in the Kufuor regime,” he added.

  • Choosing me affirms your trust in women – Jane Naana tells Mahama

Choosing me affirms your trust in women – Jane Naana tells Mahama

Former Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed humility at her reselection as the running mate to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, for the upcoming December 7 general elections.

She regards Mr. Mahama’s decision to partner with her again as a testament to his confidence in the capabilities of Ghanaian women.

Addressing an event held at UPSA to officially introduce her as the running mate to the party’s 2024 flagbearer and presidential hopeful, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pledges her loyalty and dedication to duty in return for the privilege bestowed upon her.

“My output, going forward, by the Grace of God, will continue to demonstrate what the world knows already, that women are also capable of high achievements; that we do so with that reservoir of strength, determination, and mental acuity that only those who are noble and far-sighted can comprehend and contend with,” she added.

She emphasized her commitment to demonstrating women’s ability to achieve remarkable feats through resilience, determination, and mental agility.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assures that, in the face of any challenges during their tenure, she will not resort to self-serving excuses, such as claiming to be merely a subordinate.

As the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she calls on NDC supporters to remain focused on securing victory over the governing New Patriotic Party, citing the urgent need to address economic challenges and mismanagement under the current administration.

She emphasized that the upcoming election transcends personal milestones or party victories, stressing the importance of restoring unity and integrity to Ghana.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang views the election as an opportunity to steer the country away from the brink of destruction, corruption, and despair, towards a future characterized by hard work, sacrifice, and collective nation-building.

“The election ahead of us is not about making history, although that is important. It is not about returning a former president back to power, or about producing the first woman vice president, historical and exciting though they are. It is not only about bringing the National Democratic Congress to power although that is indispensable in our current circumstances.

“It is about winning the elections for a purpose that goes beyond those enumerated above. The purpose is the opportunity to hold our country together, again; to heal Ghana; it is about the chance to pull Ghana from the precipice of destruction, of normalizing corruption, of incomprehensible greed, from deep despair. The election ahead is about hard work and abiding sacrifice. It is to embrace everyone in building a Ghana that functions, again,” she explained.

Elon Musk’s Starlink can now operate in Ghana – NCA

Ghana’s telecommunications sector, the National Communications Authority (NCA), has marked a significant development by authorizing Space X Starlink GH LTD, the provider of Starlink Satellite Broadband, to offer Satellite Broadband Services in the country.

The NCA’s decision, conveyed through an official statement on April 25, represents a significant milestone subsequent to the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation’s endorsement of the Satellite Licensing Framework in Ghana.

“The administrative processes towards the issuance of the license is ongoing and will be completed shortly,” the statement added.

The government had foreshadowed this action in response to the recent internet interruption caused by undersea cable damage.

During a parliamentary session in March, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful highlighted that the National Communications Authority had previously lacked a licensing framework for satellite operators such as Starlink.

Must I apologize for fulfilling my security duties? – Ashanti regional minister quizzes ECG

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has remained steadfast in his position despite calls from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Workers’ Union for an apology over the arrest of their manager, Mark Wiafe Asomani.

Defending his actions, the minister clarified that he instructed the police to arrest the Ashanti East Manager of the ECG for security reasons.

Addressing the matter at a press conference in Kumasi, he emphasized that his actions were within the scope of his responsibilities and did not contravene any laws.

“Do I have to apologise for doing my security work? What I want to tell you is that I asked the police to invite Ing Mark Asomani Wiafe on security grounds because of the happenings in the electricity sector in the region and the fact that a taskforce can always come from outside to disconnect without the proper information.

“What is ironic is that they tell me that they are not under me and for that matter, I cannot tell them what to do but they want to tell me how to execute my security responsibilities as enshrined in the Securities and Intelligence Act of 2020, Act 10(30),” citinewsroom.com quoted the minister as having said.

He also criticized the ECG for disregarding warnings from the security council to ensure uninterrupted power supply at the residences of the president and vice president during their visits to the Ashanti Region.

Additionally, the minister refuted claims suggesting that certain ECG managers are members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), underscoring the importance of adhering to security responsibilities as mandated by law.

He further highlighted existing agreements between the ECG and the Kumasi Technical University aimed at resolving the university’s outstanding debts.

Akufo-Addo will not assent to anti-LGBTQI Bill – EU

In his recent address to the European Parliament on April 24, 2024, Virginijus Sinkevičius, acting on behalf of High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell, tackled concerns surrounding Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTIQ Bill.

Recognizing Ghana as a robust democracy and a stabilizing force in the region, Mr. Sinkevičius commended the nation for its strides in human rights protection, including recent efforts towards abolishing the death penalty.

However, he also underscored persistent challenges, particularly in safeguarding the rights of sexual minorities.

The passage of Ghana’s anti-LGBTIQ Bill through Parliament has sparked both domestic and international apprehension.

Currently under judicial review by the Supreme Court to assess its constitutionality, the Bill awaits presidential assent to become law.

Mr. Sinkevičius noted that the European Union and its Member States have been closely monitoring developments surrounding the Bill since its introduction in 2021.

Despite the Bill’s passage, Mr. Sinkevičius expressed confidence in Ghana’s commitment to human rights, citing public statements from the President and senior government officials expressing concerns about potential setbacks in human rights and financial implications.

Highlighting Ghana’s pivotal role in regional stability and its evolving partnership with the EU, Mr. Sinkevičius emphasized the EU’s appreciation of Ghana’s dedication to shared interests, including support for a rules-based multilateral order and the abolition of the death penalty.

The speech concluded with a reaffirmation of the EU’s partnership with Ghana, stressing mutual respect for human rights and a commitment to follow Ghana’s promising path in upholding universal values.

Ghana: Speech by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell in the EP plenary on the LGBTIQ bill passed by the Ghanaian parliament

Speech delivered by Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, on behalf of High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell

    Check against delivery!

    President, Honourable Members,

Ghana, a solid democracy and anchor of regional stability, has a strong record in terms of protecting human rights through its laws and through its practice. Significant steps have been taken in this area. See, for example, Ghana’s decision of last year to take steps towards abolishing death penalty.

However, challenges remain notably in the area of the protection of sexual minorities. The recent passing in Parliament of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, more commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTIQ Bill, is an issue of concern in Ghana as it is the case in any other country on the continent and in the world. In its current form, the Bill requires close review in light of Ghana’s international and constitutional human rights commitments.

The constitutionality of the Bill has been challenged and it is currently scrutinised by the Supreme Court.

It is also to be noted that the Bill also still requires presidential assent to enter into force. The President has publicly reiterated his commitment to the respect of Human Rights and has expressed his concern to seeing a “backsliding” on human rights in the event of adoption of the Bill. Senior members of the Ghanaian Government have also highlighted the Bill’s potential financial consequences and losses for the 2024 budget.

We are therefore confident that Ghana will stand firm in the commitments it has made on national and international Human Rights.

The European Union, together with its Member States, have followed the matter closely since its introduction in 2021. Our position and concerns on the matter are well-known and regularly communicated. Ghana has a pivotal role in ensuring regional stability in an increasingly volatile region, marked by spill over of insecurity from the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea countries.

The European Union has succeeded in further deepening its partnership with Ghana, as it evolved from a strictly developmental partnership to a more political one that is fit to face regional political and security challenges.

It is therefore of utmost importance that we remain close and build upon Ghana’s and EU’s already strong partnership to defend our common values.

    Closing remarks

    President, Honourable Members,

The debate today illustrates European Union’s commitment to defend Human Rights as universal values.

Ghana has shown strong commitment to shared interests in a rules-based multilateral order, notably in the context of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, and on values dear to the European Union, such as the abolition of the death penalty, an important milestone in Ghana’s support for Human Rights.

Therefore, we cannot but partner in Ghana’s commitment and regional leadership and in his respect of Human Rights and continue to follow the country in this promising path.

    Thank you.

  • Gomoa Manfam residents to boycott December polls over absence of bridge

Gomoa Manfam residents to boycott December polls over absence of bridge

Residents of Gomoa Manfam in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have declared their intention to boycott the upcoming December poses.

This decision they say is due to the absence of a bridge, which poses a significant threat to their lives.

They highlighted that the entire area faces flooding during rainy seasons due to the lack of a bridge over a stream in the community, making the road impassable and leaving residents and commuters stranded.

This critical road connects the Gomoa township to Senya Bereku.

Voicing their concerns on People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, residents expressed feeling neglected by the government.

They emphasized the need for the government to prioritize their community’s development and address essential infrastructure projects, especially in the lead-up to elections.

“We pay taxes to the government, but we have been left out of development. No proper roads, bridges, schools, hospitals or potable water. Are we not also Ghanaians?” a resident questioned.

Another stressed that, if the bridge particularly is not constructed, “we do not want to see even ballot boxes here because we will not vote for anybody in the upcoming election.”

Another resident emphasized that if the bridge is not constructed promptly, they will refuse to participate in the upcoming election, stating, “We do not want to see even ballot boxes here because we will not vote for anybody.”

The Assemblyman for the area, Lawrence Asihene, echoed the residents’ concerns, describing the bridge issue as his greatest challenge. Despite his efforts, including raising the issue with relevant stakeholders and writing multiple letters, no positive outcome has been achieved yet.

Mr Asihene assured the community that he is actively working towards resolving the issue and bringing relief to the residents.

“I have brought officials from CODA here and about three weeks ago, I came here with former MP, Kojo Asomani to witness the situation. I want to assure my people relief will soon come,” he said.

Kwesi Addo is not Amamprobihene – Okuapehene declares

Okuapehene Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III has publicly disavowed Kwesi Addo‘s claim to the title of Amamprobihene, following Kwesi Addo’s purported self-appointment to the position for over two years.

In a video circulated online, Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III recounted numerous attempts, including delegations and summons, to address the situation with Kwesi Addo, all of which were allegedly disregarded by him.

The footage from the Okuapehene palace depicted Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III visibly upset as he addressed a gathered audience, firmly asserting his authority over the Amamprobi jurisdiction.

During the 5th Awukudae observation, Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III declared,

“So, why is someone presuming to be the Amamprobihene or whatever title he claims? When I ascended to this throne, there was no such individual holding the title of Amamprobihene or even an Odikro from that area.”

“Earlier, when the linguist was speaking, he mentioned some issues with regard to Amamprobi. Anything that has to do with Amamprobi is my business. Our ancestors established that place. My blood runs through that town as well. Everyone gathered here, including visitors, and even those fighting us, know the history behind Amamprobi.

“So, why is someone parading himself as the Amamprobihene or whatever he calls himself? When I ascended this throne, there was nothing like an Amamprobihene or even an Odikro from from that place.”

“I have been reliably informed that he has been felling trees (deforestation), engaging in all sorts of nuisance. If he truly works with me, he would have honoured my summons.

“But as the Okuapehene, I have the absolute powers over that land. Therefore, I won’t allow that so-called Amamprobihene to disrespect me,” the Okuapehene stated.

GES transfers 4 headteachers who were interdicted for allegedly taking unauthorized fees

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has transferred four of the eight Senior High School headteachers in the Ashanti Region who were suspended for allegedly imposing unauthorized fees.

The suspensions, initiated in December 2023, stemmed from accusations of imposing various unapproved charges on students, including house dues, books, calculators, admission processing fees, and the printing of slips, files, and hymn books.

The Ashanti Regional president of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Sulemana Yeboah, revealed in an interview with Citi News that the Ghana Education Service made the decision after conducting investigations.

“They [GES] have taken the decision where four of them [the headteachers] have been asked to go to their various schools and four of them have been swapped from their former schools to different schools. [Headteacher] of Kumasi Girls is now at Ntonsu SDA Girls and [Headteacher] of SDA Girls is at Nkawie. [Headteacher] of Nkawie SDA Girls has been moved to Nkroful Agric.

“And in the direct swap, we have [Headteacher] of Manso Adubia SHS moving to Tweapease Senior High School, and [Headteacher] of Tweapease Senior High School moving to Manso Adubia SHS. The last person moved from KSTS to Bosome Freho Senior High School to replace the headteacher, who is on retirement.”

At the time of the suspensions, CHASS criticized the Ghana Education Service for its handling of some of the headteachers.

Despite widespread reports of their suspensions, many of the headteachers in the Ashanti region had not received formal notification of their indictment.
