Abesim murder trial to resume on May 27

The Accra High Court has rescheduled Richard Appiah’s case to May 27, 2024.

Mr Appiah, a footballer accused of killing two minors and storing their remains in a refrigerator in Abesim, faced this delay due to the absence of a juror.

Upon calling the case, only six out of seven jury members were present.

The court was informed that the missing juror had corresponded with the Registry of the Court, though the court claimed to be unaware of such communication. Consequently, the court postponed proceedings to finalize the case completion plan.

Appiah, also a draughtsman, maintains his plea of not guilty to two counts of murder before the seven-member jury. He stands accused of murdering Loius Agyemang, his stepbrother, and Stephen Sarpong in Abesim, Bono Region, in 2021.

Presided over by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, the Court has remanded Appiah into lawful custody.

Nana Ama Adinkra, a Senior State Attorney, represents the state, while Faustinus Yirilabuo represents Appiah.

Our businesses are at stake due to the bad tag on our town – Kasoa residents

Concerned citizens of Kasoa are expressing frustration over the portrayal of their community following recent media reports linking criminal activities to the area.

Their concerns stem from the shooting incident involving military personnel at the District Police Command in Millennium City, situated within the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

In a statement released on May 1, 2024, the residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the ongoing misrepresentation.

“We are extremely unhappy with the continuous misrepresentation of our community in the media. Kasoa has unfairly become synonymous with crime, despite many incidents occurring outside our municipality,” the residents noted.

The residents stressed the need for accurate reporting to prevent tarnishing Kasoa’s reputation and impeding its economic progress.

“As residents, we do not find it tasteful that the bad name tag is associated with Kasoa, as it is blocking our business potential,” they said.

Furthermore, they cited the recent shooting incident as evidence of inaccurate portrayal.

“We are disturbed that a state security agency like the police could not define the jurisdiction accurately. It must be noted that the Millennium City, where the shooting took place, is natively known as Gomoa Bantama and falls directly under Gomoa Fetteh in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, while Kasoa falls within the Awutu Senya East Municipality.

“In a similar incident, an alleged missing manhood case that happened at Nyanyano Kakraba, also in the Gomoa East, was widely reported as happening in Kasoa,” the statement said.

“all Ghanaians, particularly media organisations and state agencies, to do due diligence and avoid mentioning Kasoa other than the specific locations where crimes are perpetrated.”

The residents urged all Ghanaians, particularly media organizations and state agencies, to exercise due diligence and refrain from mentioning Kasoa unless referring to specific locations where crimes occur.

Despite their grievances, the residents commended the police for swiftly apprehending the perpetrator of the recent murder. They called for further investigation to apprehend any other individuals involved and to address the underlying issue of violent land disputes.

Kasoa is not made up of evil people, stop badmouthing us – Residents

Residents of Kasoa in the Central region express frustration over the constant association of their community with various negative incidents, even when those incidents occur in neighboring or distant areas.

They demand an end to this practice and urge that crimes be accurately attributed to their actual locations instead of being incorrectly linked to Kasoa, which adversely affects local businesses.

Kasoa, located in the highly populated Awutu Senya East Municipality, is renowned for its bustling foodstuff market and is often mistaken as part of the national capital, although it belongs to the Central region.

Similar to many large communities across the country, Kasoa grapples with a disproportionate share of societal challenges such as land disputes, ritual killings, armed robberies, and petty crimes.

The mention of Kasoa in the media typically revolves around political activities or negative incidents, further perpetuating its unfavorable image.

Residents, led by Aya Balley and Akwasi Addo, voice their dissatisfaction with the media and official bodies for consistently attributing crimes to Kasoa instead of accurately identifying their true locations.

They highlight a recent incident where a soldier was fatally shot during a land dispute in Millennium City, wrongly reported as occurring in Kasoa.

The residents emphasize that Millennium City falls within the Gomoa East District, not Kasoa, and criticize both media outlets and state institutions for this misleading portrayal.

They stress the need for accurate reporting to avoid tarnishing Kasoa’s reputation and hindering its economic prospects.

While commending the police for swift action in apprehending the perpetrator, residents call for further investigation into the incident and urge authorities to address the underlying issues contributing to violent disputes in the area.

“We are extremely unhappy with the seeming deliberate effort to
attribute any wrongdoing to Kasoa by recognized media outfits and state
institutions,” says a statement they issued on May Day.“(More) often than not the name Kasoa has been mentioned in
publications regarding criminal and other bad happenings even when those
cases did not happen within the Kasoa municipality.“We have become more alarmed as the police in a statement issued on
the shooting of a military personnel expressly mentioned the location to
be Kasoa even though the incident happened right at the District Police
Command in Millennium City which categorically falls under Gomoa East
District.“We are disturbed that a state security agency like the police could
not define the jurisdiction accurately. It must be noted that the
Millennium City where the shooting took place is natively known as Gomoa
Bantama and falls directly under Gomoa Fetteh in the Gomoa East
District of the Central Region while Kasoa falls within the Awutu Senya
East Municipality.“In a similar incident an alleged missing manhood case which happened
at Nyanyano Kakraba also in the Gomoa East was widely reported as
happening in Kasoa.“As residents, we do not find it tasteful the bad name tag being
associated with Kasoa as it is blocking our business potentials.“We are therefore entreating all Ghanaians particularly media
organizations and state agencies to do due diligence and avoid
mentioning Kasoa other than the specific locations where crimes are
perpetrated.“However, we commend the police for acting swiftly to arrest the
perpetrator of this dastardly murder and urge the outfit to investigate
further to arrest other accomplices if any, and to also work more
efficiently to curb these violent land disputes which have become a
    menace. Thank You.”

Support govt in sanitation drive to help eradicate filth – Ghanaians told

The District Pastor of Central Baptist Church in Krofrom, Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Pastor Nat Aboagye Danquah, has called upon churches across Ghana to rally behind the government’s sanitation initiatives aimed at eliminating filth from the country.

The clergyman has urged all Christians and church congregations to actively engage and support endeavors aimed at enhancing sanitation standards nationwide.

His remarks came during a significant clean-up initiative organized by his church in Krofrom and its surroundings on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

The event drew participation from hundreds of church members and local residents who worked together to clear choked gutters, remove waste dumps, and address other sanitation challenges.

In discussions with Maame Akua Asarebia and Solomon Nimo, a journalism student at the OTEC School of Journalism and Communication Studies, Pastor Danquah emphasized the importance of regular clean-up campaigns and communal efforts in combating infectious diseases and fostering public health.

Meanwhile, Mr. Agyeman Duah, Chairman for Community and Social Empowerment at Krofrom Central Baptist Church, underscored the church’s commitment to spearhead awareness campaigns against littering and environmental degradation.

I have plans of establishing a new group – Hopeson Adorye

Hopeson Adorye, a prominent figure within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and now serving as Director of Special Duties for Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, has unveiled plans to launch an advocacy entity known as the Jail Them Advocacy Group.

The primary objective of this initiative is to compel the ruling party to hold accountable former NPP officials from the 2025 administration.

Mr Adorye firmly stated that certain ex-NPP officials were embroiled in severe corruption, labeling them as “deeply corrupt” and “government thieves” who exploited their positions for personal enrichment.

While acknowledging his own past appointment by the NPP, Mr Adorye stressed that not all party members were tainted by corruption like those he condemns.

During an interview on the Citizen Show hosted by Nana Otu Darko on Accra 100.5 FM on Thursday, May 2, 2024, Mr Adorye outlined his plans to compile a list of individuals he deems highly corrupt, substantiated by evidence, and present this dossier to the government for legal action.

He underscored the critical need to combat corruption within government to channel resources toward the populace’s development.

Adorye also hinted at a forthcoming apology to former President John Dramani Mahama, suggesting that compared to the present administration, Mahama seemed like “an angel.”

In the event of a change in government, Adorye pledged to ensure that those implicated in corruption during the previous administration faced repercussions.

He claimed to possess comprehensive documentation detailing the alleged misconduct perpetrated by the unnamed individuals during their tenure in government.

My goal is to ensure you achieve millionaire and multi-millionaire status – Bawumia tells miners

The New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged significant reforms in the mining sector to benefit Ghanaians if elected in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.

Dr. Bawumia envisions allocating the majority of mining concessions to Ghanaian small-scale miners during his tenure, aiming to elevate them to wealthier statuses.

Addressing small-scale miners and youth groups in Tarkwa during the last leg of his campaign tour in the Western Region, he emphasized his commitment to supporting small-scale miners rather than pursuing them and confiscating their equipment.

He outlined plans to formalize small-scale mining activities, providing licenses through registration with the Small-Scale Miners Association using Ghana cards.

Additionally, he proposed enhanced representation of the Minerals Commission and the EPA, particularly in districts lacking such representation.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the vital role of chiefs in granting mining licenses within their communities and proposed amending mining laws to decentralize key mining agencies like the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under his presidency.

“We will allocate the mining concessions to the small-scale miners. My primary focus is to make many small-scale miners millionaires and multi-millionaires. I want to support our small-scale miners”.

“We will formalize the small-scale mining regime and give them a license. Everybody will register with the Small-Scale Miners Association with their Ghana card, and we will deepen the representation of the Minerals Commission and the EPA, and make sure that the districts that don’t have representatives, we will give them some,” he said.

NPP’s failure to involve police in Kingsley Nyarko’s bribery allegation worrying – Inusah Fuseini

A former Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Inusah Fuseini, has condemned the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its defense of Professor Kingsley Nyarko amid allegations of bribery involving Electoral Commission (EC) temporary staff during the Ejisu by-election.

In a statement on Thursday, May 2, the NPP MP emphasized the EC’s established reputation for credibility and integrity, stressing the need to preserve these virtues.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on May 2, Mr. Fuseini criticized the NPP’s defense of the MP’s actions, advocating for referral to the police instead.

He argued that such actions contradict democratic principles and exacerbate the monetization of politics.

Mr. Fuseini suggested that the NPP should have reported the MP to the police for investigation rather than defending him.

Regarding Professor Nyarko’s alleged involvement in bribery, Mr. Fuseini stated that it tarnished the Parliamentarian’s office and could warrant sanctions under parliamentary standing orders.

He underscored that the ethics of a Member of Parliament prohibit bringing Parliament into disrepute.

In a viral video from the Ejisu by-election, Dr. Nyarko was seen placing an envelope on the table manned by EC officials, prompting an investigation by the EC, which subsequently withdrew the officials from duty at the Fumesua Pentecost Church Polling Station.

“I think what the NPP should have done was to refer him to the police and not defend him. That is the first step because that goes to the core of our democracy. We are all bemoaning the monetisation of our politics.

“Now there is an attempt to corrupt public officers in the performance of their duties in a public   election.

Ensure babies are weighed regularly until age 5 – GHS urges parents

Mothers have been urged to ensure regular weighing of their babies from birth until they reach five years old.

In a recent advisory notice shared on social media to mark this year’s African Vaccination and Child Health Promotion Week, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) advised parents to “remember to inquire about their child’s growth at every health facility visit.”

Additionally, the advisory notice stressed the importance of parents bringing their infants for immunization against childhood diseases within their first two years.

Africa Vaccination Week, held annually during the last week of April, aims to raise awareness and underscore the crucial role of vaccination in disease prevention across the African continent.

Usually organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa and other partners, the week features various activities including immunization campaigns, advocacy drives, and community engagement initiatives aimed at boosting vaccination coverage and vaccine accessibility.

  • Sell National Cathedral site to complete abandoned hospital projects – IMANI Africa to Akufo-Addo

Sell National Cathedral site to complete abandoned hospital projects – IMANI Africa to Akufo-Addo

The president of the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged President Akufo-Addo to divest the contentious National Cathedral site.

Mr Cudjoe has proposed that the proceeds from this sale, valued at approximately US$58 million, be allocated to completing vital hospital projects across the nation.

His recommendation arises amidst mounting concerns over the sluggish pace of the Agenda 111 initiative, a flagship program initiated by President Akufo-Addo in August 2021.

Cudjoe stresses the importance of prioritizing the finalization of crucial healthcare infrastructure projects over other ventures.

He critiques the government’s strategy of spreading resources thinly across all 111 hospitals, likening it to the unfinished National Cathedral project.

“The Health Minister should do the commissioning. Nana should focus on properly completing 15 out of the 111 District hospitals before his tenure ends. He requires $1.5 billion to complete 70% of Agenda 111. Pray for him, as finding that money in this tight economy will be difficult without a stroke of luck or a lottery win.

“Which is why whatever he has now should be used to properly complete 15 to 20 of these hospitals instead of allocating it thinly across all 111 and leaving them resembling the ungodly and unsightly Cathedral site. Also, can he allow auctioneers to sell his man-made wonder, the Cathedral site, to art collectors? We could get money to help complete at least one district hospital.

“P.S. My friend Kofi Tonto reminds me that the Health Minister is a designated nominee of the president, pending approval by Parliament, so he can’t commission the project.

“Well, I still think the designated nominee remains the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, doesn’t he? If not, then a deputy health minister should do the commissioning,” he said in a Facebook post.

  • Chiefs are not mandated to stand for president – Prof Atuguba to chieftaincy ministry

Chiefs are not mandated to stand for president – Prof Atuguba to chieftaincy ministry

The Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law has criticized the Ministry of Chieftaincy’s recent advisory to traditional leaders concerning customary protocols at events involving the President, deeming it inappropriate.

Prof Raymond Atuguba expressed his belief that the Ministry’s statement, which sought to defend the President’s actions in a viral video where he instructed some chiefs to stand and greet him, should have taken a different approach instead of justifying his behavior.

President Akufo-Addo’s public actions, including openly instructing chiefs to rise and greet at events, have triggered debates on the delicate balance between state and traditional protocols.

Responding to similar sentiments, the Ministry stressed the tradition of showing respect for authority, including the custom of chiefs standing when greeting the President at public events, as an embodiment of Ghana’s heritage and traditions.

However, Prof Atuguba disagreed with this stance, arguing that such statements should not be issued by the Ministry of Chieftaincy.

During an interview on the AM show on Accra-based Joy News TV on Thursday, May 2, 2024, he stated, “they should know better, they should know that whoever goes to the palace of the Asantehene should not expect the Asantehene to rise for him.

“They should know that whoever goes to the palace of the Okyenhene should not expect the Okyenhene to rise for him. Whoever goes to the palace of the Yagbonwura should not expect the Yagbonwura to rise for him”.

He believes that the Constitutional provision referenced by the Ministry’s statement is insufficient.

Citing Article 270 (1) as one that empowers the chiefs to control affairs, he added, “In their land, they have obeisance from their people. Once you enter that land and you go into a traditional or customary session or event, Article 270 (1) kicks in. If you don’t want it to apply, you need to get out of the event.”

Considering these factors, Prof Atuguba suggested that the Ministry should have exercised better judgment than to issue their press release in defense of President Akufo-Addo.

  • Akufo-Addo is very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone – UCC Lecturer

Akufo-Addo is very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone – UCC Lecturer

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has characterized President Akufo-Addo as a politically divisive figure based on his actions and statements.

Dr. Asante Otchere’s remarks followed statements made by the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim, expressing the party’s commitment to reconcile with Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Ejisu Member of Parliament and runner-up in Tuesday’s Ejisu by-election.

Mr Ntim emphasized Mr Aduomi’s significance to the NPP and his determination to reintegrate him into the party.

Mr Aduomi, who served three terms as an NPP MP for Ejisu, chose to run as an independent candidate in the by-election due to concerns about the party’s handling of the delegates’ album for constituency executive elections, which he believed compromised fairness and integrity.

Several NPP members, including President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, accused Aduomi of betrayal and speculated that he had defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Asante Otchere, in an interview with Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM, criticized both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia for lacking the spirit of reconciliation, essential in politics.

He highlighted the difficulty Aduomi may face in reconciling with the NPP, particularly due to the accusatory statements made by the President and Vice President.

“If you listen to the kind of things the President and the Vice President said about Aduomi, it will be difficult for the former MP to reconcile with the NPP. The Vice President accused him of being an NDC member. That was very bad, just because he had some disagreements with the NPP and decided to contest against the party.

“Post-election, if you listen to what the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, has said, it is wonderful, quite reconciliatory. But if you listen to the President and Vice President, these are two individuals who are very divisive. The President is also very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone who does anything against him. That is how he is. So, the decision is for Kwabena Owusu Aduomi to make. If he feels that the environment will allow him to project himself in terms of his political career, why not? If not, and since politics is about timing, if you get your timing right, you’ll get your result right.”

Dr. Asante Otchere described them as divisive and noted the President’s reputation for being vindictive, suggesting that he does not easily forgive those who oppose him.

He commended the reconciliatory tone struck by the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, contrasting it with the divisive rhetoric from the President and Vice President. Dr. Asante Otchere emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with Aduomi, advising him to consider whether the political environment allows for his career advancement and stressing the importance of timing in politics.

Accompanying the President’s representative at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, on a visit to the Tema General Hospital, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye highlighted the importance of replenishing healthcare personnel to meet the needs of communities.

Dr. Okoe-Boye, during the visit, outlined the government’s strategies to enhance healthcare delivery and future plans.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to improve healthcare services, including the implementation of modern information and communication technology and the Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS).

Under Dr. Okoe-Boye’s leadership, the Ministry of Health has achieved significant milestones in disease control and outbreak management. The implementation of the LightWave Health Information Management System has facilitated real-time data access for informed decision-making in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Okoe-Boye also highlighted plans to integrate eHealth and telemedicine initiatives into the healthcare system, aiming to pilot telemedicine programs in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service.

Additionally, he praised the Ghana Health Service’s e-learning platform for continuous professional development, ensuring ongoing skill enhancement for healthcare professionals.

Reflecting on Ghana’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Okoe-Boye commended the efficient crisis management and increased vaccination coverage. He noted improvements in malaria-related mortality rates and postnatal care coverage as additional achievements during the pandemic.

The government’s commitment to healthcare infrastructure development was underscored by Dr. Okoe-Boye, with various projects underway across the country.

These include the completion of phase two of the University of Ghana Medical Center, the introduction of urology and kidney transplant services, and the enhancement of regional and district hospitals.

In conclusion, Dr. Okoe-Boye reiterated the government’s dedication to providing quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare. He emphasized ongoing efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps and enhance healthcare delivery nationwide.

Topping the list is Chad, with its workforce facing the highest daily stress levels, followed by Uganda, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone. Ghana closely trails Sierra Leone, securing the fourth spot in the ranking of countries with the most stressful working conditions.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, 46% of workers endure daily stress, with similar percentages observed among both male and female employees. Despite the region’s strides in recovering from the pandemic’s impact, employee stress remains alarmingly high.

The survey underscores the imperative for organizational leaders to tackle employee stress, recognizing its significant repercussions on productivity and performance.

Gallup underscores the pivotal role of employee engagement in stress reduction, emphasizing its importance over the physical work environment.

Bawumia’s humility and respect is overwhelming – W/R House of Chiefs

The Western Regional House of Chiefs has applauded Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his reverence towards traditional authorities.

As part of his regional campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia engages with traditional leaders and other stakeholders.

On Thursday, May 2, he convened with the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Takoradi to articulate his vision and listen to their concerns as he intensifies his campaign for the December 7 elections.

In a statement on behalf of the House, the Acting President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs lauded Dr. Bawumia’s humility and regard for traditional authority.

“Your humility and respect for traditional authorities in the country is overwhelming, we are also reciprocating this gesture to you, hence our presence here to receive you,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia, while addressing the traditional rulers, shared his vision for the nation. He pledged that if elected, his administration would amend the Chieftaincy Act to grant traditional leaders more authority, particularly in local judicial matters. This move, he explained, would enhance the prestige of the Chieftaincy institution and alleviate the burden of local disputes on the court system.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans for the establishment of a fund dedicated to the development of the chieftaincy institution.

Investigative agencies working to rubbish Cecilia Dapaah’s scandal – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is alleging collusion among investigating institutions in prematurely concluding the money laundering allegations against former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has announced intentions to reopen the investigation in light of the Attorney General’s advice against the Economic and Organized Crime Office conducting money laundering inquiries into Dapaah.

The head of Legal Affairs for the NDC, Edudzie Tamakloe, expressed skepticism about the AG’s recommendation, suggesting coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies.

“Whatever it is that the president has said, it appears the various law enforcement agencies have all worked together to reach this particular conclusion. And that is what it is. And so it is not surprising to many of us that the Attorney General’s office will come out with this, knowing EOCO has not provided the good people of this country any form of whatever the response the FBI has given, relative to the huge findings identified in the course of the investigation.”

However, Wilberforce Isaac Mensah, spokesperson for the Office of the Attorney General, clarified that the case remains open to interested parties.

“What the Office of the Attorney General has done is not to close any door for investigation. We have not closed any doors for investigation. The Attorney General has indicated already that the police are investigating the matter. And most of the documents that the OSP relied on for its investigation were obtained from the Ghana Police Service.”

“So how has the Attorney General, by this letter or the Office of the Attorney General, closed investigations? That certainly cannot be what the letter wants to suggest. If investigations are opened and there is a need to prosecute, we will do that, but as it stands now, no crime has been established.”

NPP may collapse if internal divisions are not resolved before December polls – Ameyaw-Akumfi

A member of the National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has cautioned that the party faces the risk of dissolution if internal divisions persist ahead of the 2024 general elections.

He stressed the imperative of unity among NPP members, expressing apprehension that unresolved internal conflicts could detrimentally affect the party’s electoral fortunes.

His advice follows the decision of the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, to extend an olive branch to Independent Candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi following the Ejisu by-election.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi endorsed Mr. Ntim’s initiative, suggesting that such reconciliation efforts should have commenced promptly after the party’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mr. Aduomi, who had grievances regarding the delegates’ register, defected from the NPP to contest as an Independent Candidate.

He put up a formidable challenge against the NPP’s nominee, Kwabena Boateng, who ultimately emerged victorious in the election.

“I was touched by the statement from our national chairman about his resolve to reach out to Aduomi. I feel these reconciliation efforts could have been done long ago, especially during the aftermath of the presidential and parliamentary elections, but it is not too late. The writing is on the wall. NPP needs to unite or perish.”

  • Cecilia Dapaah’s case cannot be closed without concluding remarks from FBI – Edudzi Tameklo

Cecilia Dapaah’s case cannot be closed without concluding remarks from FBI – Edudzi Tameklo

The Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has expressed skepticism regarding the thoroughness of the investigation into the alleged corruption case involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

His doubts arose following the commitment made by the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to revisit the case for further scrutiny if elected in the 2024 general election.

During an interview on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Edudzi raised concerns about the decision of the Special Prosecutor to transfer the money laundering aspect of the case to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

He pointed out that the Special Prosecutor had previously indicated the emergence of new evidence suggesting that funds were transferred to Ms. Dapaah by her niece from the United States. This development led to the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the origin of these funds.

Mr. Tameklo, who is also a private legal practitioner, questioned whether the FBI had concluded its investigation by the time EOCO forwarded the case to the Attorney General’s Office for advice.

He expressed support for John Mahama’s decision to reopen the case, citing unresolved questions surrounding the investigation.

“So, prior to the special prosecutor referring the money laundering case to EOCO, for further investigation, the special prosecutor had already given the indication that the FBI is doing part of the investigation. As we speak and at the time the EOCO sent that docket to the Attorney General’s Office for its advice or opinion, has the FBI concluded its investigation relative to the money laundering aspect?

“… If that has not been done, why will Madam Tiwaa, submit an incomplete docket to the attorney general, that is very key. We need to know, has the FBI concluded its investigation relative to the monies from the niece of Cecilia Dapaah. Until those questions are answered positively, it clearly shows that the investigations are incomplete and therefore, the position taken by John Mahama, that with the benefit of political power and executive authority, he is going to allow for further investigations into this matter and it is completely welcoming,” he said.

Reconstruction of Appiatse shows govt delivers on its promises – Abu Jinapor

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has asserted that the reconstruction of Appiatse demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its pledges.

On Thursday, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated over 120 completed housing units for occupancy at Appiatse, a community located between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

In January 2022, a catastrophic incident occurred when a vehicle carrying about 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the detonation of the explosives and the destruction of the community.

Promptly responding to this tragic event, the government initiated the reconstruction process, leading to the completion of 124 housing units and auxiliary facilities for the survivors.

The newly constructed structures range from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom units and are equipped with enhanced amenities, including a market, six-unit classroom and kindergarten blocks, internal roads, water and electricity supply, a drainage system, and a water storage system.

During the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, May 2, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the reconstruction serves as evidence that the government honors its commitments.

“If anybody thought that governments do not keep their promises, the Vice President made a promise to the people of Appiatse and this is a promise made, a promise kept.”

“And if anybody thought that governments cannot deliver, President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s government has demonstrated that there is a government here in Ghana which is delivering, which will deliver and which will forever deliver for the people of Ghana, the people of Prestrea Huni Valley and the people of Appiatse,” he stated.

Hospital projects on hold due to external debt renegotiation – Okoe-Boye

The Health Minister-designate, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has linked the delays in completing certain health facilities, notably the Tema General Hospital, to the renegotiation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) with external creditors.

The construction of the 400-bed Tema Regional Hospital, initiated with a sod-cutting ceremony in 2020 by President Akufo-Addo, aimed to replace the existing Tema General Hospital at a cost of €92.7 Million.

During an inspection tour of the facility, Dr. Okoe-Boye affirmed the government’s dedication to finishing the project despite the setbacks.

“But for the debt exchange programmes, all these are not fathomed or imaginary projects. These are projects that have been worked on in terms of contracting, facility arrangements and even works have begun on some of the sites. Like you mentioned, at Dormaa, we are going there. We don’t want to know of projects from a distance, we want you to be part of the journey.”

“The Ministry of Finance is working hard to complete this debt exchange programme so that creditors can start disbursement for projects like this to be reactivated.”

“…We are going to work hard to make sure that we resolve these challenges.”

  • Kumasi International Airport to be commissioned on May 10

Kumasi International Airport to be commissioned on May 10

Anticipation is mounting as the government prepares to inaugurate the Kumasi Airport, now renamed the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport, on May 10, 2024.

President Akufo-Addo will be joined by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited Yvonne Nana Afiriyie Opare, and other dignitaries for the commissioning ceremony.

Following the commissioning, the Kumasi Airport is slated to commence full operations by June this year. Managed by the Ghana Airport Company Limited, the facility is currently undergoing equipment testing crucial for both domestic and international flights.

With a capacity to handle over 800,000 passengers annually, mainly from the northern and middle belt regions, the airport is poised to meet the growing demand for air travel.

Contractors have outlined plans to expand the runway and demolish outdated facilities once the new terminal is operational.

Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, after a recent project inspection with Ghana Airport Company Limited management and Board Members, expressed satisfaction with the progress.

However, he also raised concerns about the long-term maintenance of the facility, emphasizing its significance for the socioeconomic development of the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole.

He noted that the airport’s establishment would ease the burden on international travelers from the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Northern, and Upper Regions, who would no longer need to travel to Accra for international flights.

During a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace by the Transport Minister and the Ghana Airport Company Limited Board and Management, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the government for realizing the project.

He highlighted the airport’s potential to create jobs and stimulate the local economy, given the vibrant economic activities in the Ashanti Region.

Phase II of the project, initiated in 2018, includes constructing a new terminal building capable of handling one million passengers annually, two boarding bridges, a road network, perimeter fence, substation, and parking lot, among other facilities.

  • Cedi will stabilize around mid-2024 – Financial Analysts predict

Cedi will stabilize around mid-2024 – Financial Analysts predict

Market analysts at GCB Capital express optimism regarding the cedi’s outlook for the rest of the year, foreseeing stabilization by mid-2024.

The cedi has faced a rapid depreciation trend since February 2024, mainly due to sustained demand for foreign exchange by corporations.

Despite this depreciation, key economic indicators in Ghana suggest an improving macroeconomic landscape. GDP growth is projected to increase slightly from 2.9% in 2023 to 3.3% by the end of 2024, while average inflation is anticipated to drop from 38% in 2023 to 18% in 2024.

To bolster the local currency, the Central Bank conducted a spot market sale of US$13 million earlier this week and also sold $20 million to Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) in the 51st auction.

Nevertheless, the cedi experienced depreciation against major trading currencies in the first quarter of 2024, albeit at notably lower rates compared to previous years.

Courage Boti, the lead researcher at GCB Capital, finds reasons for hope in recent developments regarding the cedi’s stability in the near future.

He attributes this positive outlook to the improving macroeconomic conditions and the potential for increased absorption of forex demand from the Bank of Ghana’s auctions.

“In my engagement with the traders, what they see is a pile-up of demands from the corporate sector, largely the BDCs, who are just about more or less 20% of the IFAX needs from the BDCs auction that the Bank of Ghana conducts every fortnight. So, they source the rest from the open markets and also from the other corporate sectors. You could immediately think about things like the seasonal trends that we know from before; dividends repatriation in the second quarter.”

  • Cecilia Dapaah’s scandal still under investigation – Office of AG

Cecilia Dapaah’s scandal still under investigation – Office of AG

Spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office, Isaac Wilberforce Mensah, has refuted claims that the office had concluded investigations into the scandal involving former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

This rebuttal follows the office’s advice to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) against initiating money laundering investigations into Dapaah’s affairs, based on the Attorney General’s determination that the request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) lacked merit.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, pledged to resume investigations into the Dapaah scandal if elected President, in a recent statement.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr Mensah clarified that the office’s advice did not signal the end of investigations. He stressed that neither the OSP nor the FBI had uncovered any offense.

Mr Mensah emphasized that the Attorney General’s actions did not preclude further investigation, as the police were already examining the matter.

“What the AG has done is not to close any door for investigation. We have not closed any door for investigation. The AG has indicated already that the police are investigating this matter.”

“Even most of the documents that the OSP relied on for its investigations were documents procured from the police or obtained from the Ghana Police Service. So how has the AG or the Office of the AG by this letter closed investigations. It is thus certainly not what the letter sought to suggest.”

He pointed out that many of the documents used by the OSP were obtained from the Ghana Police Service, indicating ongoing inquiries.

Regarding Mahama’s statement about reopening investigations, Mr Mensah affirmed the office’s commitment to serving the country, transcending political administrations.

He stated that if investigations lead to prosecution, the office would pursue it, but emphasized that no crime had been established at present.

  • Building materials prices shoot up

    Building materials prices shoot up

The market prices of iron rods and cement have notably surged in the first quarter of the year, contrasting with other building materials such as roofing sheets and paints.

A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed a consistent uptick in cement prices among traders, even amidst stable or slightly decreasing fuel prices.

Mr. Selasi Pomenaya, a building materials trader, highlighted that all three grades of cement from Ghana Cement (GHACEM) have witnessed price hikes.

For instance, Super Cool, previously priced at GH¢82, now stands at GH¢88; Super Rapid, formerly GH¢87, now retails at GH¢95; and Super Strong, previously GH¢95, is now GH¢105.

However, Mr. Pomenaya noted a decrease in roofing sheet prices since December 2023, with stability observed since then. Similarly, paint brands have shown no price fluctuations this year.

For instance, a packet of rough aluminum sheet now sells at GH¢2,300, down from GH¢2,500, while smooth aluminum sheets are priced at GH¢2,100, up from GH¢1,900.

Shield paint in 20-liter and 10-liter containers sells at GH¢650 and GH¢350 respectively, while Leyland paint in 10-liter containers retails at GH¢220.

Mr. Pomenaya expressed uncertainty regarding the causes of price changes, stating that fluctuations occur even when dealing directly with producers.

“I don’t know what is causing the changes in prices, when we go to the producers and prices have increased or decreased, we buy and also increase or decrease the prices,” he said.

Despite sluggish business, Mr. Pomenaya emphasized the need to remain active rather than staying idle at home.

Additionally, the GNA discovered a surge in the price of iron rods, which were previously sold at GH¢6,500 per tonne but now exceed GH¢7,000. Iron rod traders highlighted the high volatility of prices, making it challenging to determine specific selling prices.

Meanwhile, the Ghana cedi has continued to depreciate against major currencies like the US Dollar. For instance, in January 2024, GH¢1 equated to $11.91, whereas by April 2024, the same amount was approximately $14.42.

The Ghana Statistical Service reported fluctuations in the country’s inflation rate, which rose from 23.5% in January 2024 to 25.8% in March 2024, amidst a brief dip to 23.2% in February 2024.

These factors, including inflation and currency depreciation, have fueled the rising prices of goods and services in the country. Additionally, unstable fuel prices have led to increased transportation fares, contributing to a higher cost of living.

I regret speaking ill about Mahama – Hopeson Adorye

In an interview on Accra FM, Hopeson Adorye, formerly associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but now aligned with the Movement for Change, unveiled his intention to publicly apologize to former President John Dramani Mahama.

Adorye disclosed his plan to make this apology on live television, acknowledging that the campaign he participated in, which contributed to Mahama’s defeat in the 2016 elections, was largely based on false accusations.

Reflecting on the current state of affairs under the NPP government, he remarked, “As a human being, if you do something and you later realize the aim is not achieved, you need to speak up,” he stated.

Expressing remorse for his role in tarnishing Mahama’s reputation, Adorye pledged, “I have said that one day, I will kneel down on television and say, ‘Mahama, I am sorry…’ The allegations we made against him; calling Mahama a thief and all that, yet Mahama was virtuous compared to the present, we maligned him for nothing.”

While asserting his integrity, Adorye distanced himself from illegal mining (galamsey) and other questionable activities linked to some NPP members.

He also denied involvement in land-grabbing activities, particularly in East Legon, where he cautioned about potential legal consequences for many embroiled in land disputes.

Mr Adorye’s change of heart has prompted him to announce the formation of a new group, the “Jail Them Advocacy Group,” with the aim of advocating for the prosecution of corrupt officials under the current administration once there is a change in power.

  • You must resign for failing to probe Cecilia Dapaah’s money laundering case – Martin Kpebu tells EOCO boss

You must resign for failing to probe Cecilia Dapaah’s money laundering case – Martin Kpebu tells EOCO boss

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly urged the resignation of the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, citing mishandling in the investigation of former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

Mr Kpebu criticized EOCO’s absence during the return of funds to Dapaah by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), suggesting negligence or mismanagement on EOCO’s part.

He pointed out the conspicuousness of EOCO’s absence considering the OSP’s public announcement of returning the money and transferring the case file to EOCO.

The call for resignation stems from advice received from the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, advising against EOCO initiating a money laundering probe into Dapaah’s case.

The Attorney General’s office highlighted shortcomings in the collaborative investigation report between the OSP and the FBI not being submitted to EOCO, and EOCO’s unanswered request for findings from its investigation.

The Attorney General’s office noted that the docket provided to EOCO lacked comprehensive details, containing only the OSP’s transmittal letter, the diary of action, statements from the investigation, and correspondence with other institutions.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News, Kpebu argued that such oversights undermine the investigation’s credibility and raise doubts about EOCO’s ability and commitment to pursuing the case. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, insisting that Maame Tiwaa should resign without excuses.

Echoing Kpebu’s sentiments, anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem expressed disappointment with the Attorney General’s advice to EOCO. He argued that the case should not have necessitated the Attorney General’s intervention and criticized the Special Prosecutor for not providing EOCO with all the necessary information, which was used as a basis to deem further investigation unwarranted. Azeem suggested that withholding information could imply either a subpar investigation or an unwillingness to allow EOCO to continue the case with the available evidence, a common issue in high-profile investigations involving multiple agencies.

“EOCO’s Maame Tiwaa Addo Danquah should be on her way out of that office…she should be out and let us not play with it. This thing is too elementary for us to tolerate this. Kissi Agyebeng came out publicly to say ‘I am handing over this file, I am handing over the cash.’

“So EOCO should have been present to collect that money. There can be no excuses…there can be no ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ about it, that is why we are calling on Maame Tiwaa to resign,” he stated.

Paul Adom Otchere is very disrespectful and arrogant – MC Shegelabobor

A renowned Ghanaian Master of Ceremonies (MC), Shegelabobor , has described host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme, Paul Adom Otchere, as disrespectful and arrogant.

According to him, he initially held high regard for the journalist, but personal interaction altered his perception.

He recounted an instance where he served as an MC for Paul Adom Otchere’s birthday party, expecting a positive experience but instead encountering disappointment as he witnessed a different side of him.

“Paul is very disrespectful, I have stopped watching. They needed a  MC for a birthday party and the money was 2k. I moved to Teshie and I was told the client, Paul Adom Otchere, is very difficult to work with. I was having a tête-à-tête with the DJ. He comes in and he’s like you, why are you talking to him, do you know him?,” he added.

According to Shegelabobor, Paul displayed disrespectful behavior by yelling at nearly everyone present, including himself, and encroaching on his professional domain.

During the event, Paul approached Shegelabobor and requested him to dance to liven up the atmosphere, a request Shegelaboborhas declined.

“Apart from yelling at  his kids, he yells at other people’s kids too. He even instructed me to dance because he said the place was boring but I declined. When I was ready to leave I went to see his wife and she gave me an envelope that contained 800 Ghana cedis and I told her that wasn’t what we agreed on. I was so pissed that I nearly rejected the cash,” he added.

Upon concluding the event, Shegelabobor said he approached Paul’s wife to settle payment but was handed an envelope containing eight hundred Ghana cedis (800gh), contrary to their agreed upon fee, two thousand Ghana cedis (2,000gh).

Shegelabobor expressed his displeasure, considering rejecting the inadequate payment.

Think twice if you’re planning to vote for Mahama – Bawumia’s spokesperson to Ghanaians

An economic adviser and spokesperson for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Gideon Boako, has urged the citizens of Ghana to decline John Dramani Mahama’s candidacy on December 7, 2024.

He contended that if John Dramani Mahama assumes leadership, he would lack accountability to the people, particularly given his absence from future electoral contests after 2028.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based United Television, Gideon Boako emphasized how Ghanaians witnessed the country’s deterioration under John Dramani Mahama’s previous leadership, even when he faced the 2016 elections.

Mr Boako asserted that if granted the opportunity to lead Ghana in 2025 without the pressure of future elections, Mahama would likely prioritize personal wealth accumulation, leaving the nation in a state of disrepair.

“We all know what John Dramani Mahama did in his first term in government. We were aware of the corruption and how he destroyed Ghana, even when he knew he had another term to be accountable to the people of Ghana. So it is obvious that if John Mahama is given the opportunity, he will not be accountable because he has no election ahead of him. Ghanaians should note this and not vote for John Mahama.

“Bawumia, on the other hand, is aware of the task ahead of him and the fact that he needs to come back to the people for their votes, so he will respect the Ghanaian people and perform his duty with diligence,” he expressed.

Stop the lie, I haven’t been to London – Bridget Otoo replies presidential staffer

Broadcaster Bridget Otoo has exposed a falsehood being spread by a presidential staffer regarding her travel history abroad.

Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, in response to Bridget’s critical post directed at President Akufo-Addo, insinuated that Bridget had encountered an incident of being stranded in London.

“Perhaps it’s about time you tell your husband and the world what happened when you got stranded in London on that very night. I’m waiting patiently for your reply,” Teiko posted on X in response to Bridget’s criticism.

In her retort, the Metro TV journalist refuted ever visiting London and wittily suggested Teiko consider another country.

“I haven’t been to London before … Let’s try another country,” she countered.

X users have united with her in condemning the presidential staffer for spreading false information.

Bridget’s original post was in relation to a recent viral video showing the president requesting some chiefs to stand and greet him at an event.

Teiko, serving as an Executive Assistant at the Office of the President at Jubilee House, has yet to provide any evidence supporting his claim at the time of this report.

Koku Anyidoho’s letter of NDC supporting former Ejisu MP fake – Report

Koku Anyidoho, formerly the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), circulated a correspondence bearing a letterhead purportedly from the party’s National Secretariat.

This two-page letter implied that the NDC provided financial backing to an independent candidate during the April 30 by-election in Ejisu.

The first page contained instructions from General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, purportedly directing the Ashanti Regional branch to support independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

However, it’s worth noting that the NDC did not nominate a candidate for this election.

Despite the NDC’s dismissal of the letter as fraudulent, labeling it as fake, Anyidoho remains adamant, suggesting that the denial came too late.

He doubled down on his stance, criticizing what he perceives as belated and lackluster professionalism within the party’s headquarters, where he has previously worked.

The difference between the alleged ‘fake’ letter and the authentic NDC letterhead:

    a. Anyidoho’s letter carries the party’s reference number ‘NDC/HQ/26/VOL.2/19,’ which had already been used for an official statement released by Kwetey on March 27.

    b. Anyidoho’s letter includes a ‘Your Ref:’ section, which is absent in known NDC letterheads.

    c. Known NDC letterheads used by Kwetey in formal communications lack postal, telephone, and email details, whereas Anyidoho’s version includes a contact section on the right side of the references.

    d. Official NDC letterheads have dates under the ‘Our reference’ section, formatted as Day, Date, Month, Year. However, Anyidoho’s version lacks the day and positions the date on the right instead of the left side.

    e. In typical party correspondence, the General Secretary’s sign-off includes ‘Fifi Fiavi Kwetey’ followed by ‘General Secretary,’ then ‘National Democratic Congress (NDC).’ Anyidoho’s letter omits the third detail.

    f. Anyidoho’s letter displays irregular formatting for persons listed under ‘cc:’, with the text appearing smaller and squeezed to the bottom compared to the font used throughout the letter.

  • Focus on tax evasion and stop protecting corrupt State officials – Dr. Amoako Baah to AG

Focus on tax evasion and stop protecting corrupt State officials – Dr. Amoako Baah to AG

Political analyst Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has expressed deep concern over the direction taken by the Attorney General regarding public interest matters, particularly those related to corruption.

In response to a communication between Attorney General Godfred Dame and the CEO of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) concerning the Cecilia Dapaah case, a former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr. Amoako Baah expressed dismay at what he perceives as the AG aligning with individuals engaged in embezzlement.

The correspondence, stated a lack of evidence implicating Cecilia Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kufuor, in corruption or procurement breaches.

However, Dr. Amoako Baah dismissed these assertions as unfounded and an attempt to conceal wrongdoing.

In a statement, Dr. Amoako Baah denounced the AG’s stance as baseless and corrupt, asserting that unexplained wealth should be presumed illicit until proven otherwise. He questioned the AG’s motives and accused him of siding with those implicated in corruption.

“The AG’s assertions are baseless, nonsensical, and a corrupt attempt to cover-up, which every juror or logical person would treat with contempt. Would the AG venture to tell us where her great wealth came from, as others have shamefully suggested it came from funeral donations or family inheritance, even though the family is as poor as others? If he can’t, then it can safely be assumed to be from her official duties. If that is the case, it is illegally acquired wealth, called bribes, kickbacks, side dealing, or other ways they are referred to. They are all the children of corruption!

“Unsubstantiated source of cash must be automatically assumed guilty until legal or reasonable substantiation makes it not guilty,” he said in a statement.

Moreover, Dr. Amoako Baah called into question President Akufo-Addo’s response to the situation, warning that failure to address the case would cast doubt on the President’s integrity as a lawyer.

“I don’t see where the AG’s illegality stems from. The AG, who should at least be looking at issues like tax evasion, has joined in the protection of the looters of the state. This is a bogus attempt for further corruption. EOCO must disregard this advice since the Special Prosecutor is legally right.

“If the President sits idly by and allows this to go on, where are his credentials as a good lawyer? He has become part of the endemic corruption that is killing the country. For once, do what we worked so hard to elect you president for: PROTECT THE PUBLIC PURSE,” he added.

The investigation into Cecilia Dapaah stemmed from allegations of substantial sums of money being stolen from her residence by domestic workers in 2023. Despite the involvement of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), concerns persist regarding the handling of the case.

  • DCE, MP of Obuasi East Kwabrafoso allegedly working to convert football park into galamsey site

DCE, MP of Obuasi East Kwabrafoso allegedly working to convert football park into galamsey site

Concerns have been raised by residents of Obuasi-Kwabrafoso in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region regarding the alleged conversion of a renowned football park in the area into a ‘galamsey’ site.

The football park, widely recognized as a significant recreation center for the constituency youth and boasting a history of hosting football stars such as Mubarak Wakaso and John Mensah for training sessions, is situated adjacent to a military base and a school.

In a viral video the voice behind the background claimed that the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom, along with the District Chief Executive, Faustina Amissah, are involved in efforts to convert the park into a ‘galamsey’ mining site.

The footage also depicted an excavator and workers on the site.

Several residents interviewed in the video expressed shock at the development, emphasizing the park’s longstanding significance as a hub for sports and recreation in the constituency.

“This place is a hub for recreation; John Mensah himself has graced these fields, alongside countless youths from our constituency and students from different schools. Why turn this cherished park into a galamsey site? It should remain a space for us to enjoy and play,” voiced one concerned youth.

They highlighted its role in nurturing local football talent and called upon authorities to intervene and safeguard the park from further degradation.

“Galamsey,” or illegal mining, poses a significant environmental threat in Ghana, resulting in substantial deforestation across various regions and forest reserves.

The Ghana Forestry Commission has intensified efforts to combat this issue, including military operations and seeking additional funding.

However, challenges such as weak law enforcement, corruption, and unemployment continue to contribute to ongoing deforestation, alongside factors like agricultural expansion, illegal logging, forest fires, overgrazing, and infrastructure development.

  • OSP hasn’t been able to prove corruption allegations against Cecilia Dapaah – AG

OSP hasn’t been able to prove corruption allegations against Cecilia Dapaah – AG

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame, has stated that there is no evidence of corruption or procurement breaches concerning former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, and her husband, Daniel Osei Kufuor.

This information comes from correspondence between the Chief Executive Officer of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, and the Attorney General (AG), Godfred Dame.

EOCO sought direction from the AG regarding Cecilia Dapaah’s case, which was referred to it by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

According to the correspondence, the AG’s office reviewed the OSP case against the former minister and a report by EOCO, finding no evidence of corruption-related offenses or procurement violations by the former minister and her husband.

The AG’s letter stated: “A study of the docket from the OSP and the report by your office indicates that: a. investigations by the OSP did not establish any evidence of corruption, corruption-related offences, or procurement breaches against the suspects; b. the OSP has returned money and other properties retrieved from the suspects in the course of their investigations to them, and the suspects have been accordingly discharged by the OSP.”

EOCO sought guidance from the AG’s office on how to proceed with the investigation into money laundering allegations made against the former minister and her husband by the OSP.

The AG responded to EOCO stating that “the OSP’s referral to EOCO for investigations to be conducted into money laundering is without basis.”

The OSP concluded its case against the former minister and her husband, accused of corruption and corruption-related offenses after two of their house helps allegedly stole $1 million and €300,000 in cash, along with other valuable items from their residence in Abelemkpe.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng determined that his office lacked the authority to prosecute or take further action against the former minister and referred the case to EOCO, suspecting that the large sums of money found at Cecilia Dapaah’s properties and bank accounts could be the proceeds of a money laundering and structuring scheme.

Tensions escalated during the May Day celebration in the Ashanti region as employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staged a walkout while Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, was delivering his speech on Wednesday, May 1.

The employees were protesting against the minister’s decision to have their Regional Manager arrested and his failure to issue an apology for this action.

The National Vice Chairman of the ECG Senior Staff Workers Union, Bismark Adomah, announced that the company would suspend all communication with the Minister until an official apology and withdrawal of the case were issued promptly.

“As you are aware, we already have an issue with him. He has done something that the workers front are not happy. Initially, the workers front were demanding that we shouldn’t even appear at all. But we think that this is our programme and we need to represent. Since he said he’s not ready to fulfill whatever we asked him to do, we don’t even want to listen to him. So, this is just a peaceful protest that we’re not going to listen to whatever he will say. If he’s done with his speech, we’ll go back.”

Furthermore, the ECG workers’ union threatened to disconnect the Ashanti Regional Minister’s private residence if it is discovered that he has outstanding electricity bills.

This threat arose after Simon Osei Mensah denied accusations of unpaid electricity bills at some of his private properties.

Mr. Osei Mensah clarified that, with the exception of his Jachie residence, all his other properties operate on prepaid meters.

However, Yussif Osmanu Abdulai, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of ECG-Ashanti West, disclosed on Luv FM that the power company is currently reviewing meter readings from the minister’s residence.

If it is confirmed that he has unpaid bills, they will not hesitate to disconnect power to his home.

Vote-buying has become a trend under NPP – Political Analyst

Political analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has remarked that the degree of commercialization within the country’s electoral system is more prevalent under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration compared to previous regimes.

Dr. Asante Otchere’s observations follow an incident involving the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kwadaso constituency, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, who was captured on camera distributing a white envelope to two Electoral Commission officials during the Ejisu by-election on Tuesday, April 30.

The circulating video of the NPP MP has sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about addressing the longstanding issue of commercializing the electoral process.

However, the Electoral Commission, in its initial inquiries into the matter, stated that the envelope’s contents were intended for lunch and not to influence its officials.

“It is just quite unfortunate. This kind of opulence and daylight influence of elections has raised its ugly head more than ever in the regime of the NPP.

“I can say that there is not a single regime that is innocent of this practice but the level at which we are seeing now is just quite unbelieveable and mind-blowing,” Dr. Asante Otchere said on TV3 News 360.

He added, “If Dr. Nyarko had not been caught on video, he wouldn’t have accepted that I gave this envelope to the EC officials to buy water.”

Expressing his dismay, Dr. Asante Otchere remarked, “This kind of lavishness and overt interference in elections has become more prevalent than ever under the NPP regime. While no regime is entirely innocent of such practices, the current extent is simply staggering.”

He continued, “Had Dr. Nyarko not been captured on video, he likely would not have admitted to providing the envelope to the EC officials for refreshments.”

Furthermore, Dr. Asante Otchere pointed out that the government resorts to vote-buying and electoral interference due to the failure of its policies to address the populace’s issues.

“The government’s interventions have not yielded the desired outcomes, prompting it to resort to purchasing votes,” he stressed, suggesting that the resources used to influence voters could instead be invested in projects beneficial to the electorate.

Dr. Asante Otchere strongly criticized the NPP, stating, “It is disgraceful for a party that prides itself on being a democracy torchbearer. In terms of the Fourth Republic, they have regressed significantly and deserve unequivocal condemnation.”

Additionally, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which abstained from the by-election, has declared its intent to pursue Dr. Nyarko’s alleged bribery of EC officials to a logical conclusion.

  • Cecilia Dapaah’s money laundering case should be probed by CHRAJ, GRA – Vitus Azeem

Cecilia Dapaah’s money laundering case should be probed by CHRAJ, GRA – Vitus Azeem

Anti-corruption Activist Vitus Azeem has urged the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to probe accusations of money laundering against Cecilia Dapaah.

Following the Office of the Attorney General (AG) and Ministry of Justice’s statement asserting no grounds for the Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) to investigate former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah for money laundering, questions linger.

Initially, the Special Prosecutor (OSP) dropped charges against Dapaah, transferring the case to EOCO for money laundering inquiries. However, upon reviewing documents provided by EOCO, the AG’s office advised against EOCO pursuing money laundering investigations.

Addressing this development on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, Vitus Azeem emphasized that the matter should not be closed hastily.

Azeem suggested that CHRAJ could investigate Dapaah’s asset declaration to determine the legality of her income sources. Additionally, he proposed GRA’s involvement to scrutinize Dapaah’s business activities, ensuring tax compliance.

In Azeem’s view, both CHRAJ and GRA have roles to play in ensuring transparency and accountability, preventing the case from being prematurely concluded.

“In the very beginning, I even said that CHRAJ was also the appropriate body to do the investigation in terms of looking at her asset declaration to establish if these monies were acquired legally and from genuine employment or not. They have to establish how the money was acquired.

“So the matter shouldn’t end there if EOCO thinks that it cannot proceed; even if the Attorney General thinks that EOCO cannot proceed, I think that the matter should go to CHRAJ, and the matter should also go to GRA to establish if the lady was doing a genuine business and earned the money, and whether tax was paid. So there are still two institutions that can take up this matter and not allow it to just end,” Mr. Azeem said.

I am certain God will work through me to contribute positively to Ghana – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his strong conviction that he can make a positive impact on Ghana, with the belief that divine guidance will steer him in this direction.

Expressing these views during a meeting with the clergy in Takoradi on Thursday, May 2, as part of his Western regional campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his faith in God’s utilization of individuals to effect societal change, stating, “I believe that I can do something for Ghana. I believe God uses everybody that he wants to use to change the society…I believe that something good can come from Walewale and if God says that it should come from Walewale it will come from Walewale”.

In addition to highlighting his belief, Dr. Bawumia urged the clergy to intervene and prevent politicians from jeopardizing the nation’s peace for personal political agendas.

Furthermore, the Vice President underscored that his upbringing instilled in him a profound respect for all religions, promising to work closely with the church to tackle the developmental hurdles confronting the nation.

NPP must address voter apathy in Ashanti region – Mussa Dankwa

The Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa, has highlighted the prevalent issue of voter apathy in the Ashanti region, known as the stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He pointed out that this was evident during the recent by-election held in the Ejisu constituency within the Ashanti Region. In light of this observation, he urged the NPP to take proactive measures to address this concern.

“NPP must find a way to motivate voters to come out and vote…Apathy is real in the Ashanti region,” Mussa Dankwa said on the Ghana Tonight show on Tuesday, April 30.

In the by-election, the NPP candidate emerged victorious after overcoming competition from five other candidates. These included Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, an independent candidate with NPP connections, Esther Osei from the Convention People’s Party, Beatrice Boakye from the Liberal Party of Ghana, as well as independent candidates Freduah Agyemang Joseph and Attakorah Joseph.

Based on the results announced by the Electoral Commission, Kwabena Boateng secured 55.79% of the total votes cast, while his main contender, Kwabena Aduomi, received 43.24%.

These results were compiled from all 204 polling stations. Kwabena Boateng garnered 27,782 votes, while Kwabena Aduomi received 21,536 votes.

Out of an expected 100,000 eligible voters, a total of 49,780 individuals participated in the by-election.

This electoral event became necessary following the passing of the incumbent MP, Dr. John Kumah, in March, after a brief illness.

  • Yagbonwura wasn’t instructed by Akufo-Addo to stand and greet – Asamoah Boateng

Yagbonwura wasn’t instructed by Akufo-Addo to stand and greet – Asamoah Boateng

Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has clarified that there was never a request for Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of Gonja, to rise and greet President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Reports surfaced claiming that during an event in Damongo on Saturday, April 27, 2024, the Yagbonwura was asked to stand and welcome the President.

However, in a statement dated Tuesday, April 30, the Ministry of Chieftaincy dismissed these reports, urging the public to disregard the misinterpretation attributed to a viral video.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is important to reiterate that at no point during the President’s visit to Damongo on Saturday, 27th April 2024, was the Yagbonwura asked to stand up and greet the President.

“As Minister, I was with the President at the event, and, as seen clearly on videos, the President, beaming with smiles, walked over and paid homage to the Yagbonwura, who was the host of the event in Damongo. The general public is urged to avoid this deliberate and misleading piece of propaganda which is being distributed by mischief makers.”

“The call for Chiefs to stand when greeting him at public events is not intended to undermine the dignity or autonomy of traditional leaders. Rather, it is a recognition of their esteemed role in Ghanaian society by embracing the Head of State thereby showing brotherly love and mutual respect,” the ministry said.

The Ministry emphasized that during the President’s visit to Damongo, there was no such request made to the Yagbonwura.

The Minister himself was present at the event and clarified that the President approached the Yagbonwura with smiles, paying homage to him as the host of the event.

Furthermore, the Ministry clarified that the tradition of chiefs standing when greeting the President at public events is not meant to undermine their dignity but rather to recognize their esteemed role in Ghanaian society and to show mutual respect.

The Minister reiterated that no chief has been compelled to stand up to greet President Akufo-Addo within the confines of their palaces, as the President respects the sanctity of their ancestral spaces.

The protocol of chiefs rising to greet the President at public events is in accordance with the Constitution and serves to uphold Ghana’s cultural heritage while embracing modern governance.

In conclusion, the Ministry affirmed President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to preserving Ghanaian cultural values and fostering harmonious relations within the nation, emphasizing the tradition of showing respect for authority as a testament to Ghana’s rich heritage.

“Indeed, the protocol where, at public events, chiefs rise to greet him as indeed is stated in the Constitution [Article 57(2)] is meant to give credence to this unique national provision.”

“In conclusion, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs reaffirms President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to upholding Ghanaian cultural values and fostering harmonious relations within the nation.

“The tradition of showing respect for authority, including the request for Chiefs to stand when greeting the President at public events, serves as a testament to Ghana’s rich heritage and traditions,” the Ministry said.

  • Why do you like condemning Ghanaian workers? – TUC quizzes Prof Adei

Why do you like condemning Ghanaian workers? – TUC quizzes Prof Adei

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has rebuked prominent economist, Prof Stephen Adei for his assertion that Togolese workers exhibit higher productivity levels than their Ghanaian counterparts.

Director of the Labour Research and Policy Institute at TUC, Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, has criticized Prof Adei, accusing him of harboring a deep-seated disdain for Ghanaian workers.

“He has a morbid hatred for Ghanaian workers and unions. His claim to fame in Ghana is what he did at GIMPA. He didn’t do those things with Togolese workers.

“There were drivers and security people he worked with when he was there. And the least thing these people expect from him is this kind of comment. Can any government or any employer come and tell us what they have been doing about productivity? Except to perpetually complain that the Ghanaian worker is unproductive without evidence?” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV.

Prof Adei, former Rector of GIMPA, recently asserted that his research indicated Togolese workers exhibit superior work quality compared to Ghanaians, leading employers to favor them due to their perceived higher productivity.

However, Dr. Otoo contested this assertion, questioning whether Prof Adei would opt for medical treatment in Togo or Ghana if faced with a health challenge.

He further suggested that Prof Adei could have conveyed his message more constructively, acknowledging that while there are challenges regarding work attitudes in Ghana, efforts are being made to address them.

He also queried Prof Adei’s basis for claiming that Ghanaian workers lack productivity, highlighting the absence of research documents by Prof Adei supporting his contentions, and suggested that his criticism should be more substantiated.

“Prof. Adei said Ghanaian workers are lazy, and less productive, if he happens to have a medical condition that requires medical surgery will he go to Togo or Korle Bu?

“Since the Togolese workers including the medical doctors are more productive than the Ghanaian ones,” he stated.

Dr Otoo said Prof Adei could have sent his message across in a better way, as the former admitted the attitude of some Ghanaians towards work is questionable.

“We recognise there’s a challenge about attitudes to work, we are doing something about it. If you want to help, this is not the way a professor should go. There’s a way that professors can help us address some of the challenges. But they should find a nicer way, collaborative way of saying it.

“When you google Prof Adei, you will not find a single research document he has put there, it’s all about condemnations and castigations of Ghanaian workers. What is the basis to say that a Ghanaian worker is not productive?” Dr Otoo queried.

Interior Ministry extends curfew hours in Bawku

The Interior Ministry, through an Executive Instrument, has extended the curfew hours for the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.

Effective from Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the curfew hours will span from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am.

In a statement, the government urged Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and residents of the affected areas to maintain composure amidst the challenges they face, advocating for non-violent approaches to preserving peace.

Additionally, a complete prohibition is imposed on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weaponry.

The Ministry sternly warned of arrests and prosecution for anyone found in possession of such items.

The decision to renew the curfew stems from a recent clash that occurred on Wednesday, April 24, involving heavily armed soldiers and Prison Service personnel in a tense standoff.

This altercation arose when military personnel demanded the release of two individuals who had sought sanctuary in the prison yard to evade arrest.

These individuals reportedly caused a disturbance during the official launch of the 40th-anniversary celebration of Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka, at his palace.

REAC receives new headquarters from Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, has officially presented the newly constructed headquarters building to the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC).

This action follows the directive from the sector Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during his initial official visit to the Agency in February, urging the board and management to ensure the commencement of office operations by April of this year.

During a brief handover ceremony on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at REAC’s new office premises in Accra, Madam Osei-Opare underscored the significance of the new office space in the government’s efforts to regulate and standardize Ghana’s real estate sector.

“The establishment of the Real Estate Agency Council and subsequently the provision of office space represents a crucial step forward in our efforts to regulate and standardize the real estate market.
By providing oversight and guidance to industry professionals, the Council will ensure that ethical standards are upheld, transactions are conducted transparently, and the interests of all stakeholders are protected and empowered,” she said.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the real estate industry in driving economic growth and enhancing living standards for Ghanaians, she acknowledged the challenges arising from the lack of regulation and professional standards in the sector, leading to issues like price manipulation, fraud, and high-risk transactions.

Chief of Staff Osei-Opare affirmed the government’s commitment to comprehensive reforms in reshaping the real estate landscape, citing the passage of the Real Estate Agency Act 2020 (Act 1047) and the establishment of REAC as crucial steps towards promoting transparency, accountability, and professionalism in the industry.

She outlined the government’s digitization agenda and initiatives aimed at streamlining processes within the real estate sector, including plans to implement a cloud-based licensing and regulation system to expedite licensing processes and enhance industry efficiency.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures including the Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, the Board Chair of REAC, Dr. Kojo Addo-Kuffour, other board members of the Council, as well as other distinguished dignitaries.

The Real Estate Agency Act, 2020 (Act 1047), was passed by Parliament in 2020, establishing the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC) with the mandate to regulate the sector and ensure fairness and transparency in real estate transactions.

However, despite the passage of the legislation, the operationalization of the Agency has been sluggish. While the Council has been inaugurated, its functions have remained dormant, with the CEO previously operating from the Ministry of Works and Housing rather than from REAC’s headquarters.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah commended the collective efforts to provide a functional space for the Council, emphasizing that with a designated operating space, the Council can now effectively carry out its mandate. He urged management and staff to expedite their efforts to operationalize the Council and bring about positive changes in the sector.

  • Cut down on imports to help save cedi – TUC boss urges Ghanaians

Cut down on imports to help save cedi – TUC boss urges Ghanaians

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana has emphasized the need for a shift away from heavy reliance on imports towards embracing domestically produced goods.

This, he asserts, is crucial in stabilizing the cedi against major international currencies.

Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah highlighted that the significant depreciation of the cedi, amounting to approximately 250 per cent from 2016 to the present, reflects a drastic decline in the living standards of Ghanaian workers.

He attributed this decline to the country’s excessive dependence on imported products, whose prices are directly influenced by fluctuations in the cedi’s exchange rate against currencies like the US dollar and the pound sterling.

Speaking during the 2024 National May Day Parade in Accra under the theme “Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development,” Dr. Baah urged Ghanaians to prioritize locally made goods.

The event, graced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, leaders of the Ghana Employers Association, representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and members of the diplomatic community, showcased workers from various sectors across the country.

Dr. Baah noted the stark contrast in exchange rates, with GH¢14 to $1 compared to GH¢4 to $1 in 2016. This disparity significantly impacts the purchasing power of workers, making it challenging to meet basic needs like food, education expenses, and rent.

He also raised concerns about the escalating inflation rate and high-interest loans, exacerbating the already burdensome cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.

Moreover, he highlighted the plight of unemployed youth, especially recent graduates, emphasizing the urgent need for socio-economic reform to address these challenges.

Dr. Baah stressed the importance of preserving Ghana’s longstanding peace, urging citizens to safeguard it against partisan politics.

He commended the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his exemplary leadership in maintaining peace and security throughout the country, noting the significance of recent peaceful by-elections.

In addition, Dr. Baah expressed concerns regarding the activities of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and called for dialogue with President Akufo-Addo to address these issues.

May Day, celebrated as a national holiday, serves as a platform for workers to advocate for improved working conditions and address pertinent labor-related issues.

This year’s celebration, led by the TUC under the theme “Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development,” witnessed workers gathering at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The event honored 43 distinguished workers from various labor unions for their exceptional contributions to national development, presenting them with citations amidst an atmosphere of camaraderie and solidarity.

We all have a role to play in ensuring free, fair elections – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election in December.

He emphasized his commitment to overseeing a trouble-free election where the results will be embraced by all parties.

Addressing this year’s May Day celebrations, President Akufo-Addo assured that the government will furnish the Electoral Commission with all necessary resources for a seamless election.

“As we approach the upcoming elections in 2024, it is imperative that we recognize the crucial importance of maintaining peace and stability throughout the electoral process.

“Elections are the cornerstone of democracy and every one of us has a role to play to ensure that our electoral process is free, fair, transparent, and devoid of violence.”

Is supporting meals on election day vote-buying? – Kumawu MP

The Member of Parliament for Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti Region, Ernest Yaw Anim, has addressed accusations of vote-buying leveled against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the recently concluded Ejisu by-elections.

He defended the practice of candidates financially supporting their supporters to cover expenses like food and transportation on election day, emphasizing that this is a common practice and not exclusive to the NPP.

Ernest noted that nearly all candidates in the Ejisu by-elections made similar financial provisions for their supporters, yet only the NPP is being criticized by the public.

During an interview with Oyerepa TV, Ernest dismissed allegations that the NPP used money to influence voters in the Ejisu by-elections.

Responding to claims that the NPP purchased victory by heavily investing in the election, Ernest calmly pointed out that spending money during campaigns is a standard practice for all candidates.

He argued that providing financial support for supporters’ food and transportation does not constitute vote-buying, as other candidates did the same.

His comments come in the wake of a video showing Kwadaso MP, Prof Kingsley Nyarko, placing an envelope on a table where Electoral Commission officials were stationed during the Ejisu elections.

The EC later stated that the money was intended for lunch for the officials.

However, some members of the public have rejected this explanation, calling for action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s candidate, Kwabena Boateng, emerged victorious in the Ejisu by-elections, defeating his closest rival, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.

120 housing units to be commissioned by Akufo-Addo today

Today, on May 2, 2024, President Akufo-Addo will inaugurate approximately 120 housing units for survivors of the Appiatse tragedy in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

This event, marking two years since the devastating incident, is slated for 2:00 pm.

The newly constructed residences, ranging from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom units, boast upgraded amenities, including a marketplace, six-unit classrooms, and kindergarten facilities.

Additionally, they feature internal roads, access to water and electricity, a comprehensive drainage system, and a water storage infrastructure.

The revitalization of the Appiatse community follows the loss of approximately 13 lives in a catastrophic explosion triggered by a vehicle transporting mining explosives that collided at Appiatse on January 20, 2022.

The entire locality was razed to the ground, rendering it uninhabitable.

In response to this tragic event, the government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, established a Relief Committee to mobilize resources for the reconstruction of Appiatse.

The government plans to distribute 1.2 million Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) learning materials covering 24 trade areas to both government and private TVET institutions nationwide.

The distribution of these textbooks is set to commence within the next two weeks, following proposed delivery schedules tailored for the various TVET schools.

“These books are going to be distributed to the students for free in fulfilment of the President’s promise of providing free TVET for all,” Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, Director General, Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) said at a media engagement.

Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, Director General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), highlighted that these books will be provided to students free of charge, fulfilling the President’s commitment to offering free TVET education for all.

Dr. Asamoah also noted that the government has completed the implementation of the initial five-year strategic plan (2018-2022) and is now in the process of developing a TVET policy and the subsequent five-year strategic plan (2025-2029).

He further outlined the significant strides made, including the upgrade of all 34 former NVTI institutions, the establishment of new workshops for Technical Universities, and the modernization of Technical Institutes with industry-standard equipment.

Additionally, he announced the construction of four new District TVET centers of excellence in Anyinam, Poky No. 2, Assin Jakai, and Akumadan, funded by 25.7 million Euros.

“Our appeal to the media will be to support us in promoting these achievements and to also support us in making TVET the number one choice among the youth of Ghana,” he said.

Dr. Asamoah emphasized the importance of media support in promoting these achievements and making TVET the preferred choice among Ghanaian youth.

He highlighted the adoption of Competency Based Training (CBT) curriculum as a key reform strategy to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

As part of this approach, existing curricula have been standardized, and over 8,000 TVET instructors have undergone training in the CBT methodology.

Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing efforts in curriculum development to address skills gaps, with collaboration between the Commission and Sector Skills Bodies (SSBs) playing a vital role in tasks such as occupational standards generation and curriculum development.

He revealed an increase in the number of economic sectors identified from 22 to 24, with a total of 12 established SSBs as of 2023.

The Commission, in conjunction with SSBs, has developed 108 CBT curricula at various levels, with an additional 115 CBT programs currently in development as of January 2023.

NPP can’t be losing its members due to internal conflict – National Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayensu Ntim, expressed dismay over the party’s loss of members due to internal conflicts.

He emphasized the importance of reuniting with these individuals to prevent any surprises in the upcoming 2024 election.

Speaking to the media after the Ejisu by-election results were announced, Ntim stated, “Personally as chairman of the party, I’m not happy. We should be able to bring them back to the party’s fold so that come December 7 we won’t be surprised. We should be able to carry the Ejisu seat with ease as against what we are seeing and that is my next focus. We don’t expect Aduomi to make overtures to us. So as the chairman of the party, I’m going to do that myself,” he told JoyNews.

He highlighted the feasibility of persuading those who departed the party due to grievances to return.

Regarding the party’s strategy for resolving internal conflicts nationwide, he mentioned, “We have a reconciliation committee at every region and also at the national. So we will use this machinery bothering reconciliation and conflict resolution”.

The NPP emerged victorious in the Ejisu seat with 27,782 votes, with their closest competitor securing 21,534 votes.

  • Appeal filed by Dafeamekpor over dismissal of plea to compel Akufo-Addo, Bagbin on LGBT+ Bill

Appeal filed by Dafeamekpor over dismissal of plea to compel Akufo-Addo, Bagbin on LGBT+ Bill

The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has lodged an appeal against the recent decision of the High Court.

This decision dismissed his plea to compel President Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to act on a bill within seven days.

The appeal, submitted on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, argues that “the High Court failed to reasonably and fairly exercise its discretion when rejecting the Applicant’s Application for Judicial Review in the Nature of Mandamus.”

On Monday, April 29, the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Ellen Lordina Serwah Mireku, noted that while it holds jurisdiction to hear the mandamus, two ongoing cases before the Supreme Court challenge parliamentary procedures.

These matters, being constitutional, are deemed for the apex court to address.

The court opined that it would be unfit to compel the respondents, Alban Bagbin and Akufo-Addo, to act on the bill amidst pending cases before the apex court.

However, exercising its discretion, the court dismissed the plea that sought to compel the Speaker to transmit the bill to the President and for the President to receive it.

Following the ruling, the applicant, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, through his legal team led by Nii Kpakpo Samoa, filed a notice of appeal to contest the High Court’s decision.

The notice of appeal states: “Please take notice that the Applicant/Appellant, dissatisfied with the decision of the High Court (General Jurisdiction) in Accra contained in the ruling of Her Ladyship Ellen Serwaa L. Mireku, J., dated April 29, 2024, hereby appeals to the Court of Appeal on the grounds set out in paragraph 3 of this Notice of Appeal and will, at the hearing of this appeal, seek the reliefs set out in paragraph 4.”

According to the filed document, the appellant has concerns regarding “the entire ruling.”

He asserts that the grounds of his appeal are founded on the belief that “the ruling is against the weight of evidence.”

The appellant indicates that additional grounds will be submitted upon receipt of the Record of Appeal.

The appellant and his legal representatives aim to have the High Court’s ruling reversed and annulled.
