REGSEC to rid Kumasi of stray cattle

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has taken decisive steps to tackle the issue of stray cattle on the streets of Kumasi by establishing a dedicated task force.

Announcing the initiative during a press briefing, Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah stated that the objective is to reclaim the city from the intrusion of these animals.

Following an inspection of newly planted trees as part of the Green Ghana Day initiative, the Regional Minister emphasized the negative impact of roaming cattle on the region’s greening efforts.

Recognizing the challenge of restraining cattle, Mr. Osei Mensah explained the rationale behind forming an external task force. He mentioned that task force members would be compensated for their services and entrusted with protecting the planted trees from cattle interference.

Mr. Osei Mensah assured that the allocated budget would cover the task force’s expenses for an initial one-year period and could be renewed based on resource availability.

“You know, it is not easy to catch a cow. It is extremely difficult, so we are going to get some of those people who are good at it to do the work for us. We are going to engage them, we will pay them, and it will be their responsibility to ensure that the trees that we planted will not be consumed by or destroyed by the cattle.

“We will pay them during the period that is for a whole year, and if it is possible to have adequate resources to sustain it, then we sustain them the following year too.”

You won’t regret if you make Bawumia president – Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs to Ghanaians

President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Ansah Adu Baah, has expressed faith in the policies of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, believing they will positively impact the nation’s progress.

During an interactive session with the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs in Goaso on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Dr. Bawumia elaborated on his vision and policies to the traditional leaders, emphasizing his dedication to transforming the country through these initiatives.

In response to Dr. Bawumia’s presentation, Nana Ansah Adu Baah, also the Omanhene of Yamfo Traditional Area, lauded the personal qualities of Dr. Bawumia.

He praised the compelling nature of the NPP flagbearer’s presentation and expressed confidence that it would benefit both the nation and future generations.

“Dr. Bawumia’s humility and policies are good for the country and the next generation. I have no doubt in my mind that Bawumia means well for Ghana,” said Nana Ansah Adu Baah, who is also the Omanhene of Yamfo Traditional Area.

Furthermore, he commended Dr. Bawumia’s humility, considering it an admirable and essential trait for effective leadership.

“The way he is humble is so admirable. I believe if he continues as our next President, it will be good for this country and the next generation. Let us help him and vote for him massively because he has good policies for this country. And his humility is really good for this country because it promotes peace and unity.”

  • Verdict for 2 teens in Kasoa ritual murder trial postponed until June 24

Verdict for 2 teens in Kasoa ritual murder trial postponed until June 24

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, the trial judge overseeing the case involving a 15-year-old juvenile and an 18-year-old young offender accused of murdering 10-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdellah for an alleged money ritual, began with the statement, “The summing up is not ready.”

Their fate, anticipated to be determined on May 7, 2024, was postponed when the court declared that the summing up wasn’t prepared during the scheduled closing addresses and subsequent summing up for the jury.

Both individuals face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of the 10-year-old.

Upon calling the case, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo announced, “Our summing up is not ready,” setting June 24 as the new date for closing addresses and summing up, citing “circumstances beyond” its control.

The trial concluded on February 14, with the defense lawyers granted permission to submit their written submissions post-March 14, as per the court’s orders. Senior State Attorney Dorcas Fellie confirmed the prosecution’s compliance with the court’s directives regarding written submissions.

Disappointment rippled through the late Ishmael Mensah Abdellah’s family members present in court at the adjournment.

    Background:

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, the second accused (18-year-old) concluded his case without calling witnesses, following the State Prosecutors’ indication of the end of cross-examination led by Senior State Attorney Nana Adoma Osei.

After evidence closure, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo instructed both parties to file final closing addresses by March 14, with further directives promised post-compliance.

The prosecution called seven witnesses, including the 15-year-old juvenile’s father, mother, and sister. While the juvenile confessed to the offense, stating they “committed the crime together,” the young offender denied the charges.

Policeman allegedly commits suicide at Dome-Kwabenya

Reports suggest that Lance Corporal Francis Adusei, stationed at the Service Workshop, allegedly shot himself with a service rifle at his residence in the Atomic Police Barracks, Kwabenya.

According to a police report, the incident occurred around 8:45 am on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Neighbors heard a gunshot from Block 3, Room No. 10B, and upon investigation, found Adusei with a gunshot wound inflicted by an AK47 assault rifle (serial number GHGP/58NHQ/PU/AZ6303 – 205). Bloodstains were observed on the bedspread and floor.

At the scene, an empty shell and a round of AK47 ammunition were discovered in his bedroom.

The rifle was located on the bed, and the room was locked from the inside.

Mr Adusei received initial medical treatment at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Hospital (GAEC) before being transferred to the emergency ward of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he later passed away.

His body was moved to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation pending an autopsy.

Akufo-Addo owes Ghanaians an apology for messing up the economy – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s management of national affairs, suggesting that an apology to Ghanaians might be warranted due to perceived failure in addressing the populace’s needs, resulting in widespread hardship.

Mr Vanderpuye’s comments were prompted by President Akufo-Addo’s call for Ghanaians to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in the upcoming December elections, arguing that such a move would jeopardize the progress achieved under his administration and endanger the nation’s future.

However, speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Vanderpuye expressed his belief that President Akufo-Addo’s tenure would be remembered as one of disappointment, possibly making him the worst president in the country’s history.

“…If I were Nana Addo, the best thing I would do as a person is to apologise to the millions of Ghanaians who voted for me and whom I have hugely disappointed. Nana Addo will go into history as the worst president ever in the fourth republic of this country. Worst President ever because he is the most corrupt president in our history.”

“He is the one who has collapsed our economy. Ghana’s economy today is worse than at any time in our history. Is that the legacy he is talking about? Of course, John Mahama will come and correct all,” he stated.

Auctioning of BVDs was conducted lawfully – EC maintains

Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has defended the commission’s choice to auction obsolete Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs), following the discovery of 10 BVDs at a recycling facility in Madina.

While the IMANI Center for Policy and Education has urged an investigation into the auctioning of the BVDs, Dr. Quaicoe maintains that the devices were outdated and lawfully auctioned.

However, Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, contends that such actions amount to misappropriation of state resources and require further scrutiny.

In a Face to Face interview on Citi TV, Dr. Quaicoe explained that they obtained permission from the finance ministry to auction obsolete equipment, including the BVDs, ensuring compliance with regulations.

He clarified that the auction process was properly advertised in the Daily Graphic, and a recycling company in Madina, selected from six auctioneers after an interview process, made the purchase.

“I want to put on record that the BVDs and BVRs were those which were used before 2020, we acquired new ones. So, once we acquired new ones, these ones were obsolete, we’re not using them. They were still occupying space, so the Commission wrote to the district valuer, STC, they did the evaluation of all the materials, and we have documentation to that effect.

“We sent permission to the Ministry of Finance seeking permission to dispose of. They also replied and gave us the permission to go ahead. The Commission interviewed six auctioneers and one of them was picked. And a little recycling company bought them located at Oyarifa, they have EPA approval to do all those things. The auctioneer advertised it, look for February 1, 2024, Daily Graphic.”

“They did interviews and the auctioneers auctioned the items. All the money generated was paid into the Consolidated Fund. We went through the legal means.”

“We’re not worried because we have not committed any offence. The documents are there.”

  • Our processes towards 2024 election are lawful – EC to NDC

Our processes towards 2024 election are lawful – EC to NDC

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has affirmed the Commission’s unwavering stance amidst escalating skepticism surrounding its preparations for the 2024 general elections.

Despite persistent concerns expressed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding potential bias in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Quaicoe reiterated the EC’s dedication to impartiality.

The NDC has consistently questioned the neutrality of EC officials and raised apprehensions about potential compromises during the electoral process.

Referencing the recent Ejisu by-election, where Kwadaso MP Dr. Kingsley Nyarko was allegedly captured on video offering a white envelope to EC officials, which was perceived as a bribe, the NDC highlighted their apprehensions regarding electoral integrity.

However, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Dr. Quaicoe assured that the commission is strictly adhering to legal mandates in executing its duties, asserting that their actions will withstand scrutiny over time.

He likened the NDC’s concerns to pre-match criticism of a football referee, suggesting that this might serve as a strategy to keep the EC vigilant.

Reflecting on the Ejisu elections, surrounded by numerous conspiracy theories, which concluded with all candidates commending the EC, Dr. Quaicoe emphasized the importance of focusing on righteousness and being vindicated by adhering to the law.

He recalled the tenure of Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former EC Boss, who served for 23 years despite controversies surrounding the 1992 elections.

Dr. Quaicoe stressed the significance of maintaining a clear conscience, expressing confidence in the righteousness of the EC’s actions and highlighting the inevitability of criticism in the electoral process.

“When we were going to Ejisu, there were a lot of conspiracy theories, but when we finished, all the candidates were patting us on the back. We don’t pay much attention to comments like that, because once you know you’re doing what is right, go ahead and do it, you will be vindicated by going by the law.”

He reflected on the tenure of Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former EC Boss, who was appointed as a chair in 1992 and served for 23 years despite numerous issues surrounding the 1992 elections.

“Since 1992, when Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan [former EC Boss] was appointed as a chair, he was part of those who conducted the 1992 elections and there were a lot of issues about that. But he was there for about 23 years. So, some of these things, complaints will come, but you should focus and do what is right. Posterity will judge all of us. I always say that you should be clear in your conscience.

“Once your conscience clears you, God has cleared you, that is our philosophy, so we’re doing what is right. And I know and hope they know what we’re doing is right. But in an election, it’s like going to play a football match, you take on the referee. So that the referee will sit up and say that even when we have not started, they are criticising me.

“Maybe it could be a strategy they are adopting. Once you know what you are doing is right, you know posterity will judge you. We’re not agitated at all.”

Four individuals, among them a 6-month-old infant, suffered injuries when a cemetery wall collapsed on them in Kasoa Zongo, located in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region on Monday.

The incident, spurred by heavy rains, transpired as the victims sought refuge under a shelter near the market center adjacent to the cemetery.

Reports suggest the wall had been deteriorating over time before finally giving way, resulting in injuries to those beneath it.

Among the injured, a 16-year-old boy and a 60-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and are presently undergoing treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic.

Meanwhile, the toddler and his mother have been treated and discharged from medical care.

COCOBOD intercepts 634 bags of cocoa being smuggled out of Ghana

The National Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Task Force under the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has effectively intercepted 634 bags of cocoa beans destined for smuggling out of Ghana, within the Eastern Region.

This accomplishment follows a month-long operation fueled by intelligence-driven strategies.

On April 15, authorities seized a truck transporting 504 bags of cocoa beans concealed within poultry feed products.

Subsequently, on May 7, another 130 bags of cocoa beans, hidden beneath gravel in a tipper truck, were confiscated in Mpraeso, Kwahu South Municipality.

The suspects, Kwasi Edem (55) and Dennis Hodo (28), a tipper truck driver, were apprehended during an attempt to cross the Afram River by ferry from Suhum to Kwahu Adawso, as they sought to exit the Volta Region towards Togo.

They are currently in police custody at the Mpraeso Central Police Station, cooperating with ongoing investigations.

Simultaneously, the police have wrapped up inquiries into the initial arrest and are set to arraign the suspect on Wednesday, May 8.

Emmanuel Atta Ofori-Snr, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kwahu South, confirmed to Agoo FM that National Security had identified the Kwahu area as a significant transit point for smugglers since last year.

Consequently, the District Security Council remains on heightened alert to combat such illicit activities.

“I am running for president because I am deeply committed to the progress and prosperity of Ghana and its people,” the New Patriotic Party flagbearer told Africawatch in an interview.

He said, “I have prepared myself for the job, and I want to assure Ghanaians that I am ready to serve with all my heart and energy,” adding, “Throughout my career in public service, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our nation and the immense potential that exists to overcome them.”

  • You lied! Man who killed soldier at Kasoa is an operative – Adib to National Security Ministry

You lied! Man who killed soldier at Kasoa is an operative – Adib to National Security Ministry

A security and foreign policy analyst, Adib Saani, has expressed disappointment over the National Security’s swift denial of Benlord Ababio’s affiliation as a staff member, a suspect implicated in the killing of a military officer in Millennium City, a suburb of Kasoa in the Central Region.

Mr Saani finds the Ministry of National Security’s rapid denial of Ababio’s association peculiar and suggestive of potential concealment of information.

Last week, the Ministry refuted any connection between Benlord Ababio and their staff, despite allegations linking him to the fatal shooting of LCpl Michael Danso.

According to portions of the Ministry’s statement, “The Ministry of National Security has taken note of a news item in circulation on social media that alleges that a supposed staff member of the Ministry of National Security, by name Benlord Ababio, in an incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Millennium City, Kasoa, shot and killed a soldier.

“The Ministry wishes to put on record that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, who is currently in police custody, is not a staff member of the Ministry of National Security”.

However, Mr Saani contended that there exists evidence, including videos and photos of Ababio undergoing training, which substantiates his status as a national security operative.

During an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Saani disclosed discussions with another security analyst who possesses corroborating evidence of Ababio’s training.

The circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death prompt Saani to assert Ababio’s deliberate and calculated actions, indicating premeditation.

Mr Saani urged a thorough investigation into Ababio’s purported affiliation with national security, emphasizing the potential infiltration of vigilantes into security agencies, a concern he had previously raised.

“In fact, I discussed this with another friend of mine who is also a security analyst, and he disclosed to me that he had in his possession videos and photos of the training of the suspect, which proves that he is a national security official.

“The way the National Security released a statement denying that the suspect was a staff member is strange and shows that there is something they’re trying to hide.”

“The fact that he had the audacity to fire the shots — not a single shot for us to say maybe it was fired in error — but he fired multiple shots at his victims, killing one in the process, shows that he had planned to kill someone.

“He is such a powerful person. We need to therefore investigate this matter to determine if indeed he is a national security staffer.”

He warned that overlooking security lapses in Ghana poses a significant threat to democracy, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to safeguard national security.

  • Those managing Ghana’s economy are like those of Manchester United – IEA director jabs

Those managing Ghana’s economy are like those of Manchester United – IEA director jabs

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), John Kwakye, has drawn a noteworthy analogy between Ghana’s economic management and Manchester United’s struggling performance.

He expressed his discontent, stating that both entities appeared inept in tackling their respective challenges.

Mr Kwakye’s remarks surfaced on X, reads “It seems to me that the managers of Ghana’s economy are like the managers of Manchester United. Both seem clueless in addressing the problems confronting them, although the solutions are far from rocket science.”

His observation coincided with a period of significant economic turbulence in Ghana. Challenges included the departure of multinational firms due to high taxes, power shortages, currency depreciation, fuel price hikes, and soaring living expenses.

To mitigate these economic woes, the government sought a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on July 1, 2022.

Subsequently, IMF representatives engaged with Ghanaian authorities from July 6 to July 13, 2022, culminating in a staff-level agreement by December 2022.

On May 17, 2023, the IMF’s executive board greenlit Ghana’s $3 billion loan facility. The first installment of $600 million was disbursed to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on May 19, 2023.

The IMF program aims to restore macroeconomic stability and ensure debt sustainability, among other objectives, as outlined by the government.

  • Depreciation of cedi has been lower under NPP than NDC – Bawumia

Depreciation of cedi has been lower under NPP than NDC – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has contended that the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar has improved compared to its performance during the previous John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

In an interview with AfricaWatch, Dr. Bawumia emphasizes the relative stability of the cedi against the US dollar during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Despite economic challenges, Dr. Bawumia asserts sustained cedi depreciation has been manageable.

Citing data, Dr. Bawumia compares cedi depreciation between NPP and NDC administrations, noting lower depreciation rates under NPP.

Defending his previous statement on weak NDC fundamentals, Dr. Bawumia links recent economic challenges to global crises and domestic factors.

Ghana faces economic turmoil, defaulting on external debt payments totaling $30 billion in 2022.

With limited access to international capital markets, Ghana resorts to domestic treasury bills for borrowing.

Under the 17th IMF bailout program, Ghana reaches a staff-level agreement for a third installment of $360 million.

“Why not? We use averages to measure progress in statistics and economics all the time. It is a valid comparison of the management of the exchange rate under our government versus under the NDC government. The point is that notwithstanding the major global and domestic challenges we have been through, it is remarkable that whereas the exchange-rate depreciation between 2009-2016 averaged 13.9%, between 2017-2023 it averaged 13.1%. That is a fact,” Dr Bawumia stated.

He continued, “The data shows that from 2009-2016, the cedi depreciated cumulatively by 71.1%, and between 2017 and 2023, the cumulative depreciation was 64.6%. So, whether you look at the average or the cumulative, the depreciation of the cedi has been lower under our government, notwithstanding the severe global shocks we have endured. That is the basic truth.”

“Absolutely! It is still true, and I will continue to stand by that statement. We saw that between 2017 and 2021 when the fundamentals in terms of the fiscal deficit, inflation, GDP growth, external balances, and international reserves were fairly strong, the exchange rate was relatively stable.

“But following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the banking-sector crisis, the excess-capacity energy payments, and the lack of access to international capital markets, the fundamentals of the economy were weakened, and the fiscal deficit and debt levels increased,” he explained.

  • NPP will collapse if I start exposing its leaders – Hopeson Adorye

A suspended member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, has asserted that he could dismantle the party alone if its communicators persist in tarnishing his reputation.

In an interview with NEAT FM’s afternoon show Mr Adorye expressed deep dismay over the circumstances surrounding his suspension, maintaining that the NPP has shown ingratitude towards him.

Despite harboring bitterness, Adorye refrains from speaking out, yet he laments being subjected to insults and baseless accusations by NPP communicators.

Mr Adorye disclosed his dismissal from his role at the Kotoka International Airport, alleging a conspiracy to oust him orchestrated by Nana Asante Bediatu’s wife.

He issues a cautionary note, warning the NPP to tread carefully, as his potential exposé of the party’s leadership could spell trouble for them.

“I have so much bitterness in me, but I decided not to talk, yet these people [NPP communicators] are going around insulting me and accusing me wrongly”.

“My job was given to Nana Asante Bediatu’s wife; they planned to remove me from the office”.

Mr. Adorye said, “I am not a fool to be treated that way in a party I have served.”

He added, “NPP should be very careful because if I start exposing what the leaders are doing, they will be in trouble. It’s a warning.”

  • Exercise vigilance to ensure free, fair and transparent 2024 elections – Political parties told

Exercise vigilance to ensure free, fair and transparent 2024 elections – Political parties told

Political analyst Emmanuel Alex Nti has urged political parties to implement measures to prevent any form of rigging in the upcoming general elections.

He emphasized that while the Electoral Commission (EC) is mandated by law to organize free, fair, and transparent elections, political parties should also adopt strategies to avert electoral misconduct and manipulation.

Nti referred to footage allegedly showing count-jumping by some EC officials during the Ejisu by-election, calling for an investigation to verify its authenticity.

Speaking on ‘Nyankonton Mu Nsem’ on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stressed that political parties must be thoroughly prepared for the upcoming polls to avoid being caught off guard.

“We have witnessed incidents in the past that almost compromised the integrity and credibility of our elections; therefore, the parties must exercise vigilance,” he stated.

Mr Nti further emphasized the importance of political parties remaining alert to prevent manipulation of electoral processes, which could lead to violent incidents similar to those observed during the Ayawaso West Wuogon election.

“I have seen footage where an electoral official was jumping figures. I stand to be corrected, and with the advent of technology, videos can be manipulated; however, if this is indeed true, it is regrettable.

“I urge political parties to stay vigilant. Such tactics are perilous and could undermine the credibility of our elections,” he remarked.

He cited the strategy employed by the NPP during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, which involved physical assaults, and noted its recurrence in 2020.

“If an electoral official can jump figures from 27 to 30, this approach could be replicated across different polling stations, as evidenced during the Ayawaso West Wuogon polls,” he warned.

“The political parties must remain vigilant. It’s possible that the official simply made an honest error. Hence, the EC should appoint officials who are not only competent and qualified but also possess a fundamental understanding of mathematics. They should hire individuals who are literate and capable of performing basic mathematical computations,” he concluded.

  • God’s grace and hard work has brought me this far – Bawumia

God’s grace and hard work has brought me this far – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has acknowledged the role of divine grace in his life and encourages all to embrace the possibilities it offers in their own lives.

Addressing clergy members of the Ahafo Region in Goaso on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Dr. Bawumia recounted his journey, attributing his current positions as Vice President of Ghana and NPP flagbearer to divine intervention.

“My father was not wealthy during my upbringing. Reflecting on my life—the times I worked on a farm in Tamale to earn extra money as a child, drove taxis in the UK to support my education, and cleaned dormitories in Canada for sustenance as a student—I am convinced that my ascent to Vice President and flagbearer of the NPP is solely by God’s grace,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He continued, “The path my life has taken convinces me that God’s grace and favour are attainable for anyone, no matter their origin.”

Reflecting on his humble beginnings, including working on a farm in Tamale as a child, driving taxis in the UK to support his education, and cleaning dormitories in Canada while studying, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his achievements are solely due to God’s grace.

“For instance, before my election as the NPP’s flagbearer, many publicly claimed it was impossible for the NPP to elect me as its leader due to my background. But my faith in God’s grace led me to declare, ‘It is possible.’”

“Now, some say it is not possible for me to be elected President. Once again, I affirm, by God’s grace, ‘It is possible.’”

“I selected ‘It is possible’ as my campaign slogan because it embodies the vast grace of God to make the impossible, possible.”

We have not received payment from Education Ministry – Institutional suppliers

Contrary to the Ministry of Education’s announcement on April 15, stating the settlement of arrears owed to the National Association of Institutional Suppliers, the association, has contested this assertion.

While the Ministry proclaimed the disbursement of Ghc26 million to the Institutional Suppliers responsible for school uniforms, P.E kits, and stationery supply, the association has refuted these claims.

In an interview with Citi News, Emmanuel Ayivor, the Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Institutional Suppliers, confirmed the initiation of payment disbursal by the Education Ministry.

However, in a subsequent statement released on Tuesday, May 7, the association declared that the promised debt settlement remains unfulfilled and refuted the alleged disbursement of Ghc26 million.

“The Ministry’s promise to settle all outstanding payments to suppliers, particularly for the years 2021-2022, by April 10, 2024, remains unfulfilled. Many of our members have not received any payment”.

“The Ministry’s assertion that a total of GHC26 million has been disbursed to pay arrears owed to suppliers of uniforms, PE kits, and stationery is misleading”, the letter stated.

According to the association, no member has been awarded contracts for P.E kits and uniforms supply to schools, highlighting a lack of association with the purported contract beneficiaries.

“It must be noted that for the past seven years when the award of contracts for the supply of PE Kits and stationery was moved from the school level to the ministry level, suppliers of the PE kits and stationery have remained anonymous and are not members of our association.

“Shockingly, not a single member of our association has been awarded a contract for the supply of PE kits and stationery for the past seven years. It, therefore, appears that a substantial portion of the GHC26 million has gone to their own cronies,” the statement added.

Furthermore, they asserted that the selective approach to settling arrears hampers identification of payments made to members, compounded by instances of false claims of payment due to missing invoices.

The association urged the ministry to promptly honor its commitment to clear all outstanding arrears and implement a transparent payment system for improved accountability.

“Another worrying situation is that according to the ministry’s records, some suppliers have been marked as paid when they have not actually received payment. Upon inquiry, it has been discovered that their invoices are missing.

“This exacerbates the issue, leading to inaccurate claims of payment by the Ministry. In light of these revelations, we call upon the ministry to urgently fulfil its commitment to pay all outstanding arrears without further delay.

“Additionally, we urge the ministry to implement a transparent and systematic payment process to enhance tracking of payments made to members” the statement which was signed by the National Secretary, Amoah Talhir and the Vice President of the Association, Dr. George Adjei-Henne read.

NPP bussing minors, strangers to partake in voter registration exercise – NDC alleges

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Savelugu constituency of the Northern region are cautioning the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) against an alleged plan to deploy individuals known for their physical prowess to incite unrest in the area ahead of the upcoming limited registration exercise.

The exercise which is organized by the Electoral Commission (EC), commenced today, Tuesday, May 7, 2024 with the aim of registering new voters nationwide.

However, this impending constitutional process is already causing tensions in several areas of the Northern region, including the Savelugu constituency.

During a press conference held on Monday, May 6th, 2024, in Savelugu, the NDC’s communication officer for the constituency, Abass Abdul Rahaman, asserted that the NPP allegedly intends to deploy individuals with a reputation for physical intimidation to disrupt the registration process and sow discord in the area for their own political gain.

“Akufo-Addo who happens to be a caretaker and of course his driver mate as a result of their extreme eagerness and anxious to overturn the fortunes of Ghana, even the NPP party has been changed into Nana Addo’s party, no wonder they have found themselves in that difficult stage. Ladies and gentlemen it is equally important to note that until 2020 election this constituency has never recorded  even an aorta of death of even a non living  organism let alone a young enterprising visionary girl who came to watch for purposes of democracy and the purpose of the beauty of election she eventually died in a bizarre manner is quite disheartening,” he stated.

Mr Rahaman claimed that information obtained by the NDC in the Savelugu constituency suggests that the ruling party plans to transport individuals, including minors, from the Tamale Central constituency to register them in Savelugu, thereby tilting the electoral advantage in favor of the NPP in the upcoming December elections.

“Let me equally put it, however, it becomes a matter of sad and heavily political discourse hearing and picking up signals purported to be planned out by some unscrupulous members of the NPP in this particular constituency. Ladies and gentlemen attempts have been advanced so far within the NPP fraternity to bus people all the way from Tamale most especially from Zozeli area with the mindset that they are busing them to get them registered in this impending limited registration exercise,” he added.

He emphasized that the NDC is prepared to respond with equal force if the NPP attempts to intimidate their supporters from participating in the registration process.

Mr Rahaman urged the Electoral Commission, Ghana Police Service, the traditional leader of the Savelugu Traditional Area, His the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), Highness Yoo-Naa Andani Yakubu Abdulai, and other relevant authorities to intervene and prevent the NPP from disrupting the peace and stability in the area.

  • There is nothing that Bawumia has lied about – Miracles Aboagye

There is nothing that Bawumia has lied about – Miracles Aboagye

The Communications Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has dismissed allegations that the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is dishonest.

During his interview on Asaase Radio in Accra, he argued that the continual assaults from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have led to online algorithms labeling Vice President Bawumia as untruthful, solely based on the frequency of negative content circulating about him.

“What is a lie? If I say for example that if I become President I will build a wall in front of Asaase Radio and I haven’t been able to do it, is it a lie? Is that what will make you call me a liar?

“If that is a lie, then let me tell you, the last time I picked John Mahama’s 2012 manifesto and I looked at it, he had over 1,300 promises that he hasn’t been able to fulfill. Then for us to be able to establish between John Mahama and Bawumia who is a liar we have to pick their manifestos and analyze it,” he said.

Mr Aboagye explained that the internet’s algorithms tend to pick up repeated content, regardless of its accuracy, which has unfairly branded Vice President Bawumia as deceitful.

He asserted that the failure to fulfill every promise outlined in a manifesto does not automatically equate to dishonesty.

Mr Aboagye also drew attention to the fact that if unmet promises were the sole measure of dishonesty, then John Dramani Mahama would surpass Bawumia in that regard based on unfulfilled pledges.

“First of all, apart from the NDC and the opposition political party which is their job, you’ll barely hear any Ghanaian…I think Joy or Multimedia or so did some series on this thing and they realized it was a deliberate orchestration.

“This is the internet, it’s an algorithm, every day as I write Miracles is a thief, it will pop up. Somebody needs to write about 20 articles. There is no fact, there is no evidence, and there is nothing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lied about.

Bawumia’s chances of winning 15 regions are high if December polls are conducted today – Miracles Aboagye

The communications director for the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed confidence in Vice President Bawumia‘s potential to secure victory in 15 out of 16 regions if elections were conducted today.

Aboagye’s assurance stems from Bawumia’s track record of delivering on promises to the electorate, a factor he believes will resonate nationwide.

During an appearance on the Asaase Breakfast Show on May 6, 2024, he underscored the potential for his principal to clinch triumph across the nation’s 38,622 polling stations, emphasizing that Bawumia’s appeal transcends party lines.

“There are some areas that you expect Bawumia to win that he may not win but cumulatively by the time you put 38,622 polling stations, by the time you put it together, Dr Bawumia will win.

“You know why? Because each of these polling stations, has its specific needs and a majority of them, the Akufo-Addo/ Bawumia government have met their needs and the rest that they have not been able to meet, they believe that there is hope in Dr Bawumia.

“…In Ghana, it has been proven that you can win eight out of 10 regions. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can win all the regions except the Volta Region,” he added.

The Communications Director of the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in his bid for the presidency in the 2024 elections.

Speaking with Okay FM and reported by GhanaWeb, Aboagye expressed faith in Bawumia’s ability to meet the nation’s aspirations if elected president.

“Dr. Bawumia is committed to offering beneficial policies to the populace. He appeals to the nation for a chance to lead and make a positive impact. Should his tenure prove satisfactory, he may continue. Otherwise, the public can elect a new leader. His primary opponent is a former president [Mahama],” said Aboagye.

She emphasized that without a reliable voter register, transparent elections are unattainable.

During a press briefing in Accra on the eve of the 2024 limited registration exercise, Jean Mensa affirmed the EC’s commitment to conducting a credible and transparent electoral process.

“As a commission, we remain poised and ready to deliver credible, transparent and peaceful elections and electoral processes starting with the 2024 registration exercise.

Free SHS needs improvement – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer has acknowledged the achievements of the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, while also recognizing the need for further improvements.

He has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the policy’s sustainability under his leadership.

Despite challenges, including promises from the National Democratic Congress’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to review it upon assuming power, the Vice President emphasized the Free SHS’s significant success.

In an interview with Africa Watch Magazine, Dr. Bawumia stated, “The policy has therefore been a resounding success. That does not mean it is without problems. There is more to be done to improve it.

“I am committed to the Free SHS policy, and I believe it would be safe and sustainable in my hands,” Dr Bawumia noted.

Dr. Bawumia pledged to bolster the policy by constructing additional infrastructure such as classroom blocks, dormitories, and dining facilities for schools across Ghana. He also committed to investing in teacher training and professional development to enhance curriculum relevance and alignment with workforce needs.

“My government will build more infrastructure like classroom blocks, dormitories, and dining facilities for the schools. My government will also invest in teacher training and professional development, enhancing curriculum relevance and alignment with workforce needs,” he promised.

Furthermore, he highlighted the policy’s significant impact on student enrollment in Senior High Schools, particularly in underserved regions.

He noted that Ghana has achieved gender parity in SHS education, with an increase in enrollment not compromising quality.

He concluded by stating that the policy’s success underscores the need for ongoing improvements and enhancements to ensure its effectiveness in providing accessible and quality education to all Ghanaian youth.

“The programme is a cornerstone of our government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education for all Ghanaian youth. It is probably one of the most successful social intervention programmes ever implemented in Ghana.

“It has dramatically boosted student enrollment in senior high schools across the country. What is more important, the highest enrollments are coming from the poorest regions of Ghana, like the five northern regions.

“Furthermore, Ghana has now attained gender parity in senior high-school education as more girls than boys have accessed the programme. Also, the increase in enrollment has not resulted in a reduction in quality.

“In fact, the performance of the students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination last year shows that the free SHS beneficiaries attained the best results since 2014. The policy has therefore been a resounding success. That does not mean it is without problems. There is more to be done to improve it.”

The management of Accra Technical University (ATU) is deeply concerned about the continuous encroachment on portions of its 17-acre property located in Mempehusem, within the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

According to ATU’s management, efforts to erect a protective fence around the land have been thwarted by legal injunctions obtained by some of the encroachers.

During a session of the Public Accounts Committee held in Ho, Volta Region, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Accra Technical University, brought this issue to light.

Professor Acakpovi informed the committee that the matter is slated for a hearing on May 23.

“There are encroachers on the land at Mempehusem and the final resolution is that we should build a fence around the land to strongly show our presence and then our determination that we believe the land belongs to us.

“We began this partnership with the 49th Regiment and they started building the fence for us but unfortunately, some of the encroachers we suspect have taken the matter to court and sought an injunction for the construction work to stop and so work has stalled.

“We have also filed a statement of defence and a counterclaim. The court has actually issued a hearing notice to both parties and we shall be heard in court on May 23, 2024.”

Representing the President at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, Mr. Dame underscores the importance of transparency in the anti-corruption endeavor.

He advocated for honesty and integrity in disclosing investigation outcomes, urging all stakeholders, including investigative bodies, civil society, and the public, to refrain from sensationalism.

Mr. Dame believes that fully sharing the results of corruption allegations against public officers, especially high-ranking government officials, whether refuted or unsubstantiated, is crucial for bolstering public confidence, reducing suspicion, distrust, and cynicism.

Additionally, Mr. Dame suggested that investigative bodies should transparently disclose the complete findings of investigations into corruption allegations against government members that are ultimately proven false.

He rejected the notion that every public officeholder is corrupt, urging investigative authorities to abandon the belief that perpetuating allegations, even if unfounded, is necessary to remain relevant.

In essence, Mr. Dame stressed the importance of fairness, transparency, and accountability in the fight against corruption, advocating for a balanced and objective approach devoid of sensationalism or prejudice.

“The fight against corruption also requires honesty and integrity in the disclosure of results. There must be an avoidance of sensationalism by all parties involved; investigative bodies, civil society and the public. It augers well for the fight if the results of corruption allegations against public officers, particularly senior members of government which are refuted and unsubstantiated, are fully put out by investigative bodies.

“Investigative bodies must be honest and bold enough to disclose to the public the full results of investigations into allegations of corruption against members of the government which turned out to be untrue.

“This is one sure way to boost the confidence of the public in their government, reduce their suspicion, distrust, and cynicism with which the public views officeholders.”

“There is a truism that not every public officeholder is corrupt and investigative authorities must discard the view that the only way to stay relevant is by keeping the flame of allegation of corruption against public officeholders burning, even if same to journalists are unfounded and without basis.”

NHIS functioning efficiently under NPP govt than during Mahama’s tenure – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserts that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has seen notable improvements during the Akufo-Addo administration.

In an interview with Africa Watch Magazine, Dr. Bawumia commended the strides made in the health sector’s infrastructure under the current government.

He highlighted the expansion of NHIS coverage, specifically mentioning the inclusion of treatments for childhood cancers and hydroxyurea for sickle-cell patients.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia discussed the government’s introduction of an NHIS app, which enables Ghanaians to register and enroll using their Ghanacard.

“The NHIS is working better under our government than it used to be. Besides resourcing it financially, we have also digitized it and linked it to the Ghana card.

“So today, your NHIS number is your Ghanacard number. We have also extended NHIS coverage to include childhood cancers and hydroxyurea for sickle-cell patients. We have also introduced an NHIS app, so today people can register and get enrolled using their Ghanacard.

“They can also renew their subscription and check the list of diseases that the NHIS covers, without travelling to any NHIS office.

He stressed, “Second, to make health care easily accessible across the country, we have overseen the connection of health facilities under the Ghana Health Service to one digital platform. So far, all teaching hospitals and all regional and district hospitals have been connected and can talk to each other. The goal is to network over 90% of all hospitals in Ghana by the end of next year.”

He pledged to allocate funds towards the enhancement of healthcare infrastructure, especially in marginalized rural regions.

“My government will invest in expanding healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved rural areas, to ensure equitable access to quality services. My government will also implement targeted initiatives to address healthcare disparities among vulnerable populations, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

  • My sense of judgment has never been influenced by money – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

My sense of judgment has never been influenced by money – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

During his 74th birthday thanksgiving service in Kumasi as part of the festivities marking his 25th anniversary celebrations, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, reaffirmed the oath he took 25 years ago before the Asanteman Council in church.

Expressing gratitude in church, Otumfuo praised God for safeguarding his life and his family since his enstoolment as the overlord of the revered Ashanti Kingdom a quarter-century ago.

“In the last 25 years, I have gone through a lot in the country. A lot has been said about me, but I was not worried about anything they said because my focus has always been on speaking the truth to promote fairness in the country. I have always been thankful to God for bestowing wisdom on me for fair judgment in any case that came before me for a peaceful resolution.

“It has always been my prayer before God that I may not discriminate against any individual across the country. I pray for God’s wisdom that comes with integrity and fairness to promote national peace and co-existence in all my dealings with people in the interest of Asanteman and Ghana.

“At where the Lord has placed me, the golden stool takes care of me, so I don’t need your money before I can make a reasonable, fair judgment before handling issues under my control to promote peace and unity. No known individual in my 25-year reign as the Asantehene can dare say I have taken money from them before passing judgment in their favor on any dispute brought before me. No one in the world can say that against me; you can’t dare come before me to bribe me for that. I’m saying all this to the glory of God,” he said.

“I’m saying all this to seek more years and blessings from God to lead me to do more for Asanteman and Ghana in general in the years ahead of me. All that I’m praying for is wisdom, a sense of bravery, and the spirit of what I can do for God,” he added.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Ghanaians to unite in safeguarding the nation’s peace and unity for its progress.

“I will do my part through God, who strengthens me. It therefore behooves you to unite to play your part as well. I would like to use this opportunity to thank each one of you here who came to support me in this Thanksgiving service. Your presence here demonstrates your love and commitment to me.

“I’m reiterating the Asante oath that I took 25 years ago, and I continue to be honest, truthful, and just to you all at all times. I thank you all,” he said.

The service was attended by dignitaries including Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Asante Mamponhene, Asante Juaben Manhene Dasebere Otuo Serebour (who also serves as the Council of State Chairman), Alan Kyerematen, leader and founder of Movement for Change, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, among others.

Abusing energy drinks could lead to kidney failure – Apaak

In response to growing concerns regarding the harmful effects of certain energy drinks on kidney health, Member of Parliament for the Builsa South constituency, Dr. Clement Apaak, has urged health professionals to intensify awareness campaigns.

He cautioned that the widespread misuse and abuse of these beverages in local markets could significantly contribute to the rising incidence of kidney diseases among young people.

Dr. Apaak emphasized the lack of awareness regarding the potential dangers posed by these drinks, noting that many individuals consume them excessively without fully understanding the associated health risks.

“We need to conscientize efforts, from both the health perspective and that of lawmakers, to address this pressing issue,” he stressed.

His comments coincided with a generous donation of GHS 5,000.00 towards the establishment of a much-needed Dialysis Center at the Upper East Regional Hospital.

This contribution aims to ease the burden of managing kidney disease in the region, providing vital assistance to affected individuals.

Expressing heartfelt appreciation for Dr. Apaak’s donation, a Physician Assistant and advocate for the Dialysis Center initiative, Emmanuel Akatibo, stressed the importance of the contribution in advancing the center’s establishment.

He pledged to ensure its effective utilization for the community’s benefit.

  • Taxation policies deterring investors – FABAG General Secretary

The General Secretary of the Ghana Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), Samuel Aggrey, has sounded the alarm regarding the increasingly dire economic situation in Ghana.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Aggrey expressed concern over the departure of multinational companies, attributing it to unfavorable taxation policies and economic conditions prevailing in the country.

He emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues to avert further economic decline.

“The situation is getting dire. If you look at companies and service providers like Glovo, Jumia, Game, and others contemplating the possibility of leaving because of the economic situation we have.

“If you look at the taxation policy that we have in this country, it is actually not helping some of these businesses who have come in and invested so much,” he said on Thursday.

In recent years, Ghana has grappled with significant economic challenges, including high inflation rates, fiscal deficits, and currency depreciation.

Structural issues such as high public debt levels and limited economic diversification have also hampered investor confidence and hindered economic development.

Mr. Aggrey expressed concern about the departure of international companies and highlighted the contradiction between Ghana’s self-proclaimed status as the gateway to Africa and the challenges faced by investors on the ground.

Despite government efforts to attract foreign investment, he noted that the current economic climate is discouraging rather than encouraging multinational companies to establish and maintain operations in the country.

“We boast of being the gateway to Africa and encourage investors to come to Ghana to do business. However, upon investing, they encounter a different reality,” he remarked.

Mr. Aggrey stressed the need to reassess existing policies to enhance Ghana’s attractiveness to multinational corporations. He urged policymakers to evaluate the impact of taxation policies on the economy and the sustainability of foreign investments in the country.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated expired food items from the storerooms of Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East region during an unannounced visit by an FDA team.

The expired items were seized and removed from the school’s premises in the Bolgatanga East District, with the FDA urging school administrators to prioritize compliance with food safety standards in educational settings to avoid penalties.

Sebastian Mawuli Hotor, the FDA’s Upper East Regional Director, emphasized the importance of school administrators ensuring that their food supplies meet FDA safety standards during an interview with Citi News on Friday.

He further stated that the confiscated products, supplied to the school for student meals, were taken for safe disposal as part of the FDA’s mandate to uphold food safety guidelines.

Efforts to reach the school authorities for a response have been unsuccessful thus far.

“We went to Zuarungu SHS as one of the school kitchen inspection that we do. In one of their storerooms, we found about five different brands of products which were bad and then I think one out of them was unregistered as well. We got some from neighbouring schools as well as from Buffer stock.

“From the document we requested for, we were given and then the products were the Free SHS mackerel, the royal gold hard wheat flour, pavani evaporated filled milk, paka tomato paste and queen [pilchards] in tomato sauce.”

“These were the products that we found that were expired. These were products that were supplied to the school for feeding the children. As part of our mandate, we confiscated them and taken them for safe disposal and it is something we will repeat from time to time just to ensure that food safety guidelines are adhered to in all food establishments including food kitchens,” he stated.

  • Politics has destroyed MP for Essikado-Ketan – Paul Adom-Otchere

Politics has destroyed MP for Essikado-Ketan – Paul Adom-Otchere

Host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Essikado-Ketan constituency, Prof. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, for her recent controversial remarks on social media.

The criticism stems from a post made by Prof. Ayensu-Danquah, where she took a jab at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Adenta constituency, Akosua Manu Kozie.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah’s post read “when your only talent in life is marrying Mark Manu’s son you will continue to arrogantly struggle to remain relevant”.

In response to Prof. Ayensu-Danquah’s remarks, Adom-Otchere expressed disappointment in her conduct, considering her stature and background.

While acknowledging her admirable qualities of sensibility and eloquence, he lamented her resorting to negative discourse, especially as a woman in politics who should be mentoring younger women.

Mr Adom-Otchere also criticized Prof. Ayensu-Danquah’s posture during a studio appearance, highlighting his discomfort with her demeanor.

“This is somebody that you will easily admire when you see her. She is so sensible, she talks so well. In fact when you see her, she is a very decent woman. And she is a woman and look at what she is writing about another woman, a younger woman that she should be mentoring. Even her posture in the studio I didn’t like but that is okay. Look at what she put out,” he added.

He questioned how someone of her caliber could engage in such behavior, suggesting that politics had tarnished her otherwise decent reputation.

“How can a politician of Grace Ayensu standard, nice and decent woman like that? Look at what she is writing because she wants power, she is just throwing away all the ethics. I mean she is a very decent woman from all angles, her training, her background and her  relationship with people but look at what politics has done to her. She is no w writing this very crass thing on social media. I feel ashamed.

Adom-Otchere underscored the importance of politicians maintaining ethical standards and decency, especially in their public discourse, with a sense of disbelief.

He described Prof. Ayensu-Danquah’s social media post as “very crass” and expressed his disappointment and shame at witnessing her descent into such behavior.

  • Abesim murder trial to resume on May 27

Abesim murder trial to resume on May 27

The Accra High Court has rescheduled Richard Appiah’s case to May 27, 2024.

Mr Appiah, a footballer accused of killing two minors and storing their remains in a refrigerator in Abesim, faced this delay due to the absence of a juror.

Upon calling the case, only six out of seven jury members were present.

The court was informed that the missing juror had corresponded with the Registry of the Court, though the court claimed to be unaware of such communication. Consequently, the court postponed proceedings to finalize the case completion plan.

Appiah, also a draughtsman, maintains his plea of not guilty to two counts of murder before the seven-member jury. He stands accused of murdering Loius Agyemang, his stepbrother, and Stephen Sarpong in Abesim, Bono Region, in 2021.

Presided over by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, the Court has remanded Appiah into lawful custody.

Nana Ama Adinkra, a Senior State Attorney, represents the state, while Faustinus Yirilabuo represents Appiah.
